Hello, everybody!! This is the place to talk Braves baseball and other topics, meet friends new and old, and just hang out and enjoy yourself!
The rules are simple: keep it clean and no attacks.
(Bear with me as I work out the kinks. I’m still learning. Some of the posts are going to appear out of the order from which they were posted on this first page; it has taken the ‘time stamp’ a while to catch up.)
Play ball!!!
Wethinks it’s fantastic … that seals it … We love it!
Hey everybody. Hope all is well. Go Braves!!
–30–
Hey, where’s the party?
Looks like Andruw’s gonna be tracking down fly balls at Chavez Ravine for the next two years. $18 million a year????? Boras, you are something special.
We’re here, though barely … We’re a bit better and busy searching for an affordable replacement computer from the Internet while drinking soup and thinking about a very late lunch.
Good stuff, all! Taking it easy today as tomorrow’s Vanderbilt Day … but hope to be off the DL by tomorrow evening.
Three questions … (1) How broad of an announcement was made? (2) Are invitations actually necessary? and (3) How do you get the smiley faces?
Make that four … how does one edit, change or add additional Masks?
Well, we have to run >:-( … make that walk to the kitchen and fix a super sandwich … make that both soup and sandwich >:-)
I wish I had Boras negotiating for me! A flop of a year and get rewarded like that. Mercy!
I am SOOOO happy to see y’all!! At least we’ll have a haven until maybe we get something better. But it’s not bad for a spur-of-the-moment thing.
Barry M. Bloom/mlb.com wrote this:
“NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Despite profound legal troubles and a pending arraignment on Friday in a San Francisco federal court, former Giants slugger and current free agent Barry Bonds still hopes to play the 2008 season, his agent told MLB.com on Wednesday.
“He’s training currently and he’d like to come back in 2008 to put a World Series ring on his finger,” said Jeff Borris, as the annual Winter Meetings began to wind down. “Barry definitely wants to continue playing. So I’m actively pursuing jobs for him from teams that are committed to winning.”
Bonds was indicted last month on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice for allegedly lying about his use of performance-enhancing drugs in testimony given to a grand jury four years ago. He’s expected to plead not guilty on Friday at his arraignment in San Francisco, which will begin the legal maneuvering in the case.”

Bonds thinks he’s above anything and anybody. Just incredible. I truly hope no one signs him.
Jim Molony/mlb.com wrote: Braves talk to Miller
“The Braves have been talking with the agent for free-agent catcher Damian Miller, though GM Frank Wren indicated Atlanta is more likely to find catching help via trade than free agent signing.”

Hey, wethinks! You’ve just gotta get well quick!
I had the addresses of 15 regulars to whom I sent invites.
I’m not sure if invites are absolutely required or not. Hope not.
To make a smiley, use the standard colon-dash-paran; the program will read it and show the icon.
My thoughts are with you and Carol on tomorrow’s venture. Please let me know how she (and you!) fare.
**wethinks**, forgot to mention: Acer computers, new to the US market, are making some really great machines available at a most reasonable price. Kelly got one a few months back at Best Buy (250 gb harddrive, excellent processor, printer, etc) for under $500.
oh, the humanity! another braves blog! cannot pull the plug here, right? and idiots around? golly, gee, here? your the best? thanks so much for the hard work and sacrifice?
just good blogging. now, baseball . . . gorkys, jair, jo jo, and corky. circus in town. under the big top. add bobby cox and can charge admission. watch bobby cox touch bobby cox’s brain through bobby cox’s nose. oh, kinder, gentler blog. nevermind.
now, how will word get out to the faithful that a new blog is in town? must be some interested in blogging without slobber since there were 393 posts on the abandoned chop chick blog before conspirators took action.
now, baby seal is grateful to be included on the mast of this fine blog. seems that baby seal is being rewarded for hard work at the winter meetings. too bad journalist bob was scooped by baby seal along with other journalists. now, let this journalist be frank: “enjoy the cheese sampler and thanks for the fair and balanced coverage of the team. here, have a cigar and a canned ham. glaze? like the glaze?”
let’s have fun blogging here. don’t tell stinky.
wethinks, i hope y’all get a good report card. thoughts and prayers are with you.
JJS,
Circus or boy band? Could go either way I guess. (re-phrase) Could apply either way I guess.
You’ve heard the urban legends before. A couple (or just a parent) goes away on vacation. On the way home, they’re expecting to come home to a nice quiet house. It will look exactly the way it did when they left it, and they’ll kick back, relax, and wait for something exciting to happen.
However, when they walk through the door after they’re long hiatus, they find the kids have thrown a massive party…full of fun and excitement. Free from thier parents rules and regulations. That is until the cops showed up and ran everybody off. No more fun. No more excitement. Time to go to somebody else’s house to party. So goes the story of the Chop Chick and her blog.
alas, chop chick, jimmy smith barely knew her. chop chick missed the chance for blog stardom and a wurlitzer. and pulling the plug, not nice, right? well, a certain carolinian (can say that on a blog?) has found a new blog site for all braves fans to have (it’s okay to have an opinion different from frank here) and express opinions. talk toes. talk pie. talk bbq. talk melons (watermelons, not melon heads). talk crows. talk yellow clown shoes. talk web feet. talk methinks. talk chino cadahia. talk uh, hunitn’.
and soon, a song. yes, a song. but not country music. “a huntin’ we will go.” with new lyrics. also, “the bear went over the mountain.” with new lyrics.
and which new brave will become a huntin’ buddy? gorkys? not likely. jair? nope. jo jo? can’t hunt with a jo jo. that leaves corky. go fetch. oh, the humanity!
and bobby cox once hunted on the double dime. chipper had to loan bobby a rifle. after the hunt, bobby tried to hand the rifle back to chipper and, just as chipper reached out, chipper realized that bobby had held this rifle for hours and chipper said, “uh, that’s okay, skip, uh, you keep it.”
and who has a little laroche joke? can still tell little laroche jokes, right? and tim hudson has had a pass for all the “you knows” in the past. this blog will, you know, deal with that, you know?
and will tim hudson be the ace? or smoltz? or tim hudson? or smoltz? and who will be number three? four? five? and will mike hampton risk further injury by suiting up?
and now, frank at the winter meetings . . . wait, text coming in from frank. back later.
Savannah, Lew has the crayons.
Uh, hunting we will go, a hunting we will go
Heigh ho, the dairy-o, a hunting we will go
A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go
We’ll shoot a deer and sign his rear
And then we’ll let him go
Uh, hunting we will go, a hunting we will go
Heigh ho, the dairy-o, a hunting we will go
A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go
We’ll shoot a horse, mistake of course
And then we’ll let him go
Uh, hunting we will go, a hunting we will go
Heigh ho, the dairy-o, a hunting we will go
A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go
We’ll shoot at jair and trim his hair
And then we’ll let him go
Uh, hunting we will go, a hunting we will go
Heigh ho, the dairy-o, a hunting we will go
A hunting we will go, a hunting we will go
We’ll shoot at gorkys and then at corky
And then we’ll let ‘em go
uh,
Evening ladies and gentlemen…
Thank you bravesandstuff…hey I know who you are…;)…TheJackAss is doing just great…full of fresh oats, and gunpowder!…
Associated Press – December 6, 2007 2:05 PM ET
CINCINNATI (AP) – The Cincinnati Reds picked up a minor league pitcher from the Atlanta Braves today.
The Reds selected right-hander Sergio Valenzuela in what’s called the Rule 5 major-league draft. The 23-year-old must remain on the Reds’ 25-man roster or be offered back to Atlanta for half the $50,000 selection price.
Valenzuela was on the AAA Richmond Braves roster. He pitched last season in Single-A.
oh, the humanity! shades of fernando valenzuela! frenando-mania! how did the braves let this one get away? can throw the screwball? can get people out?
can say screwball here? guess so, stinky is nowhere around. and whither lew? coming to visit? will those who post here be banned somewhere else? leave a mark? letter “a”? worse, letters “gg”.
and now, more baseball . . . from the winter meetings: frank crossed the hall and went into another room. who is that following? hmmm…. small journalist with flippers. but baby seal is back home. oh, the humanity! say it ain’t so! disguised as baby seal! too short for baby seal and bad manners to boot. frank will never fall for it.
and now, bloggers are welcome to join us here. talk some baseball. eat canned ham. anne cox chambers is moving over here soon. likes grinch. likes scribe, too, but scribe is unavailable. anne wants to date someone who has a car. #17 on richest americans list. could buy her own car.
and ham, why canned ham? and claxton fruit cake . . . ’tis the season. could send one to chino cadahia. and little peeps . . . nope, wrong time of the year. april is for peeps. december is for candy canes and divinity. and will flbravesgirl be making divinity this year?
and how did pralines become pralines? american league?
this post is a long one but chop chick (new one- lives in carolina) said it was okay. and maybe chop chick will blog with us now. doesn’t blog on her own blog. and what if this blog is read by frank? or by homeboy upstairs? or by bobby cox? or, by bobby dews? dewsy. little lambsy divey.
and now, more music for the blog:
Oh, mairzy doats and dozy doats and little lambsy divey
A kiddle divey, too. Wouldn’t you?
Oh, mairzy doats and dozy doats and little lambsy divey
A kiddle divey, too. Wouldn’t you?
If the words sound queer and funny to your ear,
A little bit jumbled and jivey.
Say, “Mares eat oats and does eat oats
and little lambs eat ivy.”
Oh, mairzy doats and dozy doats and little lambsy divey
A kiddle divey, too. Wouldn’t you?
Oh, mairzy doats and dozy doats and little lambsy divey
A kiddle divey, too. Wouldn’t you?
sing real fast, three times.
full of oats, huh? glad to see the jackass here. where is rr?
Well, It took me three days to register and then to find it all. I suppose I’m in the right place as I see there are Journalists, SCribes and Hillbillies-OH MY!!-romping through the cyber corridors. Now, if only I had something worth saying.
Sorry SJA-didn’t mean to forget you, as well.
Does anyone know who Chop Chick is? Is it Carroll Rogers, who wants to meet us at Spring Training?
One last thing-I have the email addresses of 2025 denizens from when I was soliciting Skip Caray comments. BTW, SJA, if you can email me lewhartman@comcast.net I’ll get you to send Skip comments, as well.
Excuse me-that was 20 to 25 adresses. Not that many (2025) on the blog I would correspond with.
SJA full of oats and gunpowder…Is that worse than being full of ____ and vinegar?
Why, oh why, did the Reds choose Valenzuela over Dan Smith?
I’ll more than likely keep referring to you as CL. Old habits die hard.
I’ve made several valiant attempts at uploading a little avatar picture like SJA has done. It says that it’s been uploaded successfully but I’m seeing no results. SJA has the upper hand?
Hello! Hello. Hello? Hellloooo. Oh, hell…
Having a single-blog blogging experience at BravesBlog and being a techno-idiot to boot is a bad combo I guess.
Anyhoo…Howdy do. If this works, I’ll post something more interesting later when I think of something, uh…interesting.
My email server has been on the fritz since yesterday morning until a little while ago. The Net worked fine but email server down. Trying to sign up I think I inadvertently created my own blog. If so, please don’t bother going there or you will undoubtedly be the only one that ever does.
Whoa! This looks like a mighty fine blog here, complete with the Lady of Carolina, songs, baby Brave seals, Baseball news, journalists, artists, scribes, hillbilly’s, jackas…uh, Southern Gents, wethinkers (what happened to Bob, Journalist?), Klobbers…so many good neighbors.
I can just smell that NC ‘que wafting through this Carolina chatroom. Bravesandstuff? What happened to the fair Lady of the Carolinas? We used to shorten your moniker to CL. What now…surely not BS!!!
Oh, the…well, you know!
CL…if you click on “my account” at the top of your page…then click on “edit profile”…there is a place there to change your nickname…and choose which name you want to appear as public…such as CL…
Hillbilly…fresh oats and gunpowder are both right up there with those others…
journalist jimmy…the last time I saw rr…he was still stuck to the bottom of my boot!…
as I was saying…
but on the other hand…
OK, SJA! Thanks! I had tried that a number of times and it only showed the blog name. I appreciate it!
WELCOME, Savannah Guy! Really glad to see you!
Greetings all, I think I have been granted access to the new and soone to be world famous bravesandstuff blog.
Gil, WELCOME!!! Sure am happy to see you!!
Still trying to get a little picture in the little box. Although the one in there already favors me. Little grey fella. Round head and all. Not bad. Can we draw eyes and hair on our little icon? Carolina Lady has a new picture! CL, you’ve already had two pictures and Jackass has a Jackass and Hillbilly has a…I can’t quite make it out. Is that you holding a baby? My eyes just aren’t that good anymore.
I’ll keep working on a picture. Must be doing something wrong. Where are the crayons?
Hey, Hillbilly! I think it was more like too much competition for a frail ego that had the plug pulled. It will be interesting to see if the CC blog is ever revived again. My guess is that it will not.
It worked!!!! Lew was out of crayons. All he had was pencils and charcoal.
Folks, how are we going to let the others know where this blog is???
Great avatar, SG!
Hey, SJA!!! WELCOME!! Hope you’re well!
Off to the grocery store – be back shortly!
Greetings good denizens, hope all are doing well. We had a bit of freezing rain today and it appears everyone forgot how to drive. The tow truck drivers have a different word for snow around here. They call it white gold….. So many fender benders, so little time.
I wish I had some new and exiting news on the baseball front to share with everyone but alas, it is the same old rehashed stuff we have been over a thousand times I think. I will attempt to pass along anything that might be of interest but most of the news comes out of the south. At least as far as the Braves are concerned.
The wife is currently in her pre-Christmas stress mode. We have seven children and 18 grandchildren so she gets all in a tizzy about what to give them all for Christmas. I keep telling her not to worry, let the parents worry, we got all of the kids through puberty and out of their teens without major incident so our job is done. Personally, I would just as soon go to Vegas or take a cruise. Yep, that’s the ticket……. ESCAPE…
Okay, let’s see if the picture broke the blog…
Didn’t take
Hey, Lew! It is GREAT to have you join in! There are probably some overlaps, but if you would send invites to those on your list, it would be great! The url is right at the top:
http://bravesandstuff.wordpress.com/2007/12/05/hello-world/#comments
It would be SOOO super to get everyone together again! choppin mama and FBG, too.
SJA, it’s CL. They didn’t give me an option for a name; had to be that of the site name. But I’m the same ol’ me!
And it’s not MY site; it belongs to ALL of us. I just set it up.
I’d much rather be CL!
It feels sooo good to back amongst friends!
2025?? You sure got my attention with that one, Lew!! :-0 And you’re right, I don’t think there are that many in the old place. Funny!
Hmm. I dunno, Hillbilly. I’m so green at this stuff I hardly know what I’m doing! There is a FAQ and if you have many, many days to sort through it, I’m sure it would be helpful. Maybe.
I can make graphics (do you like the banner??) and that kind of stuff, but have never tried to do a blog before. Was done rather hurriedly so we’d at least have a ‘club house’. We’ll get there!
Hey, way to go, Hillbilly!!
Good morning all, Promises to be a cool day here in Mechanisville. Lew, what ever possessed you to move to Vermont? You like snowmen? Snowcream? I think snow is really pretty while it comes down but they close schools around here about 30 seconds after the first snowflake falls. You would think with all of the transplants we have in Richmond from points north they would know how to handle snow, alas, not true.
A word to the wise… Those Jersey walls they keep putting up along the highway. They are not working…… Some are still slipping through…..
And jimmysmith, it might have been the cake crumbs that gave baby seal away. And you might tell him to layoff the sardines before an interview. It makes him a little too obvious in the elevator.
Gil-It was financially motivated. My wife was Dean of Amdinistration for Barry University Law Scool in Orlando. She was offered Dean of Admissions at Vermont Law School at a full 50% increase in pay-that in six years has risen to a 225% increase. We kept the place in Orlando as an investment and watch deer, wild turkey and snow on 35 acres-something you’ll never see in Orlando. In the meantime, my son and his wife have a cheap house to live in and I have a free place to stay while doing Spring Training-and tirkeys-lots and lots and lots of turkeys..
Lew, Funny how it is such a small world, my incentive for retirement was financial in addition to medical. DuPont agreed to pay me 85% of my base salary to stay home. I figured it would cost me money to continue to work. It was time for me to go anyway. I had developed such an animosity towards the company for their perchance towards telling untruths.
I also taught at John Tyler Community College for 5 years. No great thing but enlightening. My bad back forced me to give up a lot of things, the foremost being golf. Unfortunately I have no talents in the “arts”. I often thought of taking up writing but so many family issues seem to take precedence.
The turkeys are making a comeback here also. I would hardly ever see one when hunting as a youth. Now they come to the door. I am being surrounded by development so I don’t know how much longer the wildlife will hold out. The deer are pretty brazen too. Used to have to beat on the side of the old horse stable to make sure the deer weren’t in there. Could be a real surprise for everyone when they would come charging out about the time you turned the corner of the barn.
Ah, good morning, my back has told me it is time to get up for a while. Some interesting things from over night. I was doing a little research on the “Great Eight”, the term the Richmond papers used to describe the ‘93 Richmond club. That team had Chipper, Javy, Ryan Klesko, Mike Mordaci. Tony Tarasco, Melvin Nieves plus a couple more future big leaguers (Eddie Perez). Grady Little was the coach.
In trying to find the roster for that team I ran upon a quote from Russ Nixon from 1988 saying how Braves fans should have faith in the organization. That was the year the team lost 100 games. he said that the Braves should start to vie for championships by 1991, just a soon as their young pitching developed.
Another interesting quote I read yesterday was from Jim Bowden of the Nationals. He said that a team’s pitching staff should be built around starters who can go 6 and 7 innings, otherwise your relief corp is not really relevant.
Looks like our old fried Johnny Estrada is on the trading block already. After the Mets picked up Schnider he became excess. If the Nationals don’t sign LoDuca, they may try for Estrada. I am wondering what Estrada did while with the Braves to get him in Bobby’s doghouse?
Gil, interesting info! Come over to p2 and repost it for us!
I heard a rumor that some of the finest bloggers in the world were over here…I thought I would pay a visit!
Hello to all of joe’s friends,Merry Christmas, and Seasons Greetings.
Hope all is well with,SJA,jjs,Carolina Lady,Lew:etal
I’m getting itchy for Spring Training, how bout you guys????
Anyway,HAPPY HOLIDAYS
