Bradenton, FL. – I never liked baseball as a kid. It was just that game my dad watched incessantly every summer. I think he got cable just so he could see the Braves, terrible as they were, on TBS. The game would start and I would stick my nose in a book. More often than not, he would start yelling and cussing at the TV and I would take my book and myself off to my room. Why did he watch this if it made him so mad?!
Then in ’91… something happened. He stopped yelling at the TV and started cheering. I had to see what had brought about this miraculous change. And just when I started paying attention those sneaky Braves grabbed hold of my heart. Suddenly I was watching every game with him while he explained what was going on. I was staying up for West Coast games and taking notes so he would know what had happened before he went to work in the morning. I nearly died of nerves during the ’91 Series. I was a FAN now.
Now came the first test of my fanhood: the offseason. Would this last or was it just a summer fling? But there I was, checking out spring training reports and counting down to Opening Day. This was the real thing. This was love. And they repaid that love in October with the single most exciting moment I have ever seen in a ballgame. I think I achieved human flight leaping off the couch when Sid slid.
Since then there have been times when the Braves have frustrated me, ticked me off and broken my heart. But it’s all been worth it for all the times they’ve made me so happy. They’ve given me something special to share with my dad and brought me many friends I would never have known otherwise. I’m so grateful I looked up from my book that day in ’91 and started this love affair that I hope lasts the rest of my life.

I read the very sad account of what happened to Grinch’s friend. I’m afraid, however, in the times that are acomin’ that more of this type of thing will happen. People with families unable to put bread on the table, turning to unthinkable(in normal times)”solutions”. God help us.

Niece; That is one of the reasons that I have posted things like the frozen infants, etc., to try and show what a scary world we now live in. Now, closer to home, a honor high school student hired a hit man to kill her mother so she could collect the 2mil insurance on her. And I’ll bet that if she had been successful that the 2mil would not have lasted long. Further, since she was not successful she will probably get a legal slap-on-the-wrist and probation as her mother pleads that she is really a “good” girl. Jeez!

Actually I know what’s wrong with them. So many people have the “it’s all about me” attitude that other people mean nothing to them. You see it on a small scale everyday. Inconsiderate drivers, no customer service anywhere, people who ignore you & block the aisle with their cart no matter how many times you say “excuse me”, general rudeness.
That’s one of the reasons I’m looking forward to living in a small Southern town where people are still friendly & polite.

Chris, the Bible says that there is nothing new under the sun. It’s all been done before. But there are billions more people to do it and more news outlets to report it. Other factors, as well, but it still shocks me that there are ‘humans’ who readily engage in this stuff. Horrendous.

Niece; That is one of the major reasons that I live in a small Southern town. And it is infinitely better than Atlanta, but not totally without flaws. The kids are the main problem and why? You guessed it…the internet. They get the same crap here that they get in LA, Chicago and NY. And, they want to be like their “contemporaries”. And their parents–worshiping youth–are not setting an example, they are right in there with them. I hope you find what you are looking for, but Opie don’t live here anymore.

We might as well hope he heats up and gives us 5 months of productivity. I get really rankled at the apologists who constantly point to his career numbers and say, “He’s always a slow starter. He’ll progress as the season does.” So what?!? I would like my players to give me the whole season, not just the latter portion. It woulda been nice for him to produce a little in April. It might have made a difference in a few of those 9 one-run losses…

With 1 out in the top of the 9th, and Acosta coming in from the pen, my satellite started flickering (small bit of rain) and eventually went black. All three receivers quit working and this morning they’re still not right. One in the bedroom was working, but the one in the living room was not. I switched the receivers and now neither of them work. Anybody got any tips on how to reset these things(DirecTV)?

FBG, I agree that Tex will go to the highest bidder (probably NYY). While I’ll root for him this year I have absolutely zero faith that he’ll be back next year. He’s nothing more than a soldier of fortune or a mercenary. If he got the biggest offer from the Nippon Ham Fighters he’d take it. Sayonara!

According to a “report”, Smoltz’ pain has subsided significantly. He still has soreness and stiffness in the trapezius muscle area, but he’s feeling much improved. He may start playing catch by Sunday or so.

Man, is she taking a beating! It’s too bad the ajc doesn’t require/allow specific user names. It would eliminate a lot of problems.
Corky’s given name is Abraham Philip Miller. I like Corky better than Abe or Abraham, although I agree calling a grown man (athlete or not) is kind of funny sounding. I wonder where he got the nickname. You think he uses cork in his bats? If so, it hasn’t helped!

More specifically, the ball was dribbled up the 1B line, Buddy makes the play on it as Kouz runs through the space where Buddy’s head was. Kinda rough lookin’, actually. I could see a concussion resulting the way his head snapped.

Yunel bunts for a single, Chipper singles to left,(Wait, a double, since it was 2nd and 3rd???) they walk Frenchy to have a double play in order….and Matt swung at darn near everything, but got a pitch and singled to left….

5-4 Braves…came back from 4-1 down. Matty delivered a bases loaded single in the 9th. Norton came through with a big 2-run pinch single to get it to one…I think in the 7th. Braves tied the game in the 8th on a wild pitch. Escobar was in the middle of everything offensively today. I think he scored three times. Pitching was by committee…everyone used ‘cept Resop (why’s he on the roster?). Reyes developed a blister in less than three innings; Carlyle got knocked loopy in a collision with Gonzales, but got the out. Weird game…but a W. How’s that for a synopsis?

FLB, you can kind of relate then…..My Dad was born in 1931, and his parents had been married since 1922! My Father’s father??? Don’t even know when he was born, in the old country! My Grandfather was one of 16. and the baby to boot!!! My Great Grandfather was probably born in the 1840’s…no joke. Had 2 wives, eventually.

I think my dad will want to do the genealogy thing once he’s retired. Cool thing about his mom’s family is that they were among the founders of her hometown in NC so we’ll be able to find a lot of info there at the church.
A cousin of my mom’s traced their paternal side back to Holland & England. Please don’t blame me but the Waldrons were some of the original settlers of New Amsterdam.

As part of the government’s investigation into whether Barry Bonds committed perjury about his use of performance-enhancing drugs, the authorities questioned Kimberly Bell, who said she was his former girlfriend. It is unclear if Clemens’s acknowledgment of “mistakes” will have any impact on a defamation lawsuit he filed against Brian McNamee.

Top of the morning, good folks. Sorry again for the radio silence … been a long, strange week, and two more to follow. But everything is fine on this end. I’ve been blessed with another promotion, but to take this one, I had to clear out my vacation time and comp time, so … three weeks off, with pay. I have a honey-do list six miles long, I’ve actually started fishing again, I’ve dug my golf clubs out of the back of the Sports Garage (funny, when you take four years off from playing how you can hit the ball SOOOO good on the driving range; may actually hit a course for 18 one day next week).
But anyway, that explains my silence of the past week, as I transition into vacation mode, make sure everything is taken care of on this end and I finally relax … I’ll be around more in the coming days. Just decided to get off of the computer for a few days and break up the old routine.
Now, baseball (noted transition from the Scribe): Went to the game yesterday. Frustrating early, with Jo Jo not hitting his spots and the shaky defense in the first. Infante bailed them out with that great snag and nifty throw to start the double play. I give the Braves a TON of credit for battling back and FINALLY winning a one-run game. Norton looks great so far. Chipper and Yunel are both playing like superstars. Great AB by Diaz with the game on the line. Solid work by the bully. Playing like champions now.
Awesome homestand. Yeah, it was the Reds and Padres, who both stink. BUT, this team has left so many games on the table so far this season, it was good to see them rip off six in a row and get back closer to where they should be. Just need to carry this confidence onto the roadie.
Got the comments bug worked out on http://braves.today.com so now I can leave comments on there. Got a room I need to paint in the coming days, so off to the store for wallpaper-removal stuff. More later.

HOUSTON (AP) – An illegal immigrant from Mexico was convicted of capital murder Thursday in the 2006 shooting of a police officer during a traffic stop.
Jurors will now consider whether Juan Leonardo Quintero-Perez, 34, should get the death penalty.
Officer Rodney Johnson, 40, was shot four times in the head after arresting Quintero-Perez for driving without a license.
Records show Quintero-Perez was deported in 1999 after being convicted of indecency with a child, but he slipped back into Texas.

Berigan, the news reports I read said that as soon as the first UN flights landed and unloaded the 38 tons of food, medical supplies, boats, etc – the military government of Myanmar seized it and wouldn’t let it be distributed.
Other nations from around the world have been waiting at the Maynmar embassy in Thailand seeking permission to enter the country with food, water, etc – but the embassy was CLOSED today for a holiday.
The world is waiting to bring it in but the gov’t there won’t allow it. They said they can’t “appear” to not be able to handle the situation. Hello???

If I can find this link I’ll post it. Just a few days ago I read about a process where a body is dumped into a pit of lye and heated to about 300 degrees. The lye disolves all of the soft tissues and the bones are brittle enough to be pulverized into a dust. The lye and the remaining tissues are then dumped into the sewer system. Yuck!

Does seem disrespectful in a way. Personally, I don’t care what happens to my body once I’m gone. I am an organ donor and hope that any (if any) “good parts” that happen to be left over can be used to extend or enhance someone else’s life but I truly view my body to be just a vessel that my spirit inhabits while I’m on this earth.

I’d blame the coach(s) 008….I really don’t know why you can’t have a team come out early, once, twice a week and have everyone bunt 10-15 times…everyone! Tex , Chipper, they should all be able to lay one down for a suicide squeeze, or moving a runner over.

008, do you use IE, or Mozilla??? Mozilla puts a red line under whatever you have misspelled(Forgot an s right there!) and if you right click on the word, it shows several several choices for the correct spelling. I love it…of course, I can butcher a word so badly even it can’t figure out what word I meant to use! 😳

Jim Edmonds released by the Padres after hitting .178 and struggling in the field (after starting the season on the DL). Two or three years ago the general consensus among sportswriters (though they were wrong) was that Andruw couldn’t hold his jock defensively. When you drop the juice at 35, 37 comes awful quick. Steroids claim yet another victim.

Well, Richmond won last night 2-0 over Louisville.
Five Braves pitchers combined to blank the Bats as the Braves took the opener of an eight game road trip. (See, it’s corporate policy to use five pitchers per game..)
The Braves snapped a scoreless tie in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Diory Hernandez that plated Brandon Jones. Phil Stockman battled out of a bases loaded Louisville threat in the eighth. Barbaro Canizares added insurance with a ninth inning home run, his club leading fourth of the season.
Francisley Bueno pitched six innings, striking out five without allowing a walk to earn the win. Zach Schreiber worked a perfect ninth to notch a save. Canizares had two hits for the Braves.

Bonaventure is right, Pal. My mom, dad and brother are there. By the way, the photographer of the ‘Bird Girl’ cover of the Midnight book was one of my very best old friends, Jack Leigh. I actually suggested he go out to that cemetery to find an image for the book photo. Jack died a few years ago from colon cancer. Now he resides at Bonaventure. It’s a beautiful place.
All of you should be sure to get a colonoscopy (colo-rectal) exam. Don’t put it off. By the time there are symptoms you could have a fight for life on your hands. If my friend had done that he’d be making more art and hangin’ with me and watching the Braves today. He’d probably be blogging with us. He was as huge a Braves fan as I am. We used to go to West Palm Grapefruit League ST together. I wrote a story about some of those times.

SG; I’m glad your family members and friends rest in such a beautiful place. Mine, on the other hand, are in a cemetery in Atlanta that when they bought the plots was one of the cities’ finest. The streets around it were all named for Confederate Generals. Now, those same streets are named for civil rights leaders and the cemetery itself is a rapidly fading oasis is the midst of Apache Country. I wish I could afford to have them moved, but I will not be joining them. 😦

Oh, it ain’t right to disrespect the Confederate Generals by changing the names and such, but one day the tide will turn, the neighborhood will change, the demographic will shift and who know, we could have street names like Paladin Lane, Shyhawk Avenue and Berigan Boulevard. Me, I like American Indian names as much as possible. They were here first after all. After that, Presidents, Generals, heroes, civic leaders and such. After that, animals, trees and numbers work just fine.

Grinch, agreed. Thing is, once any street is named… particularly named after living or dead human beings, it should remain forever that name. Would be OK to change numbered or arbitrary street names once in a while, but not once named after a person, whether they be Confederate, Union, Repub, Dem, white, black, yellow, red (or in your case green) or whatever.
Atlanta can’t even settle on an Airport name.

If I need medicine and can’t pay for it, I do without. Why don’t they?
Why are there some misguided, short-sighted, Americans who think all of this is OK???? Asked rhetorically, of course, but I just don’t understand why they fail to see what they are doing to their own nation. Why don’t they?

This game… no, make that most road games are maddening. We can’t even win against the worst teams. Usually mediocre fundamental execution becomes poor execution when they’re away. If Braves are staying at Motel 6, put’em in the Ritz. If they’re staying at the Ritz, put’em in Motel 6. If they’re eating seafood, give’em steak. Whatever.
Something has to change before this season gets mired in sub 500 ball.
Can Brian McCann at least make the appearance of trying to beat out a grounder?

On the brighter side, Infante looked good with the bat tonight and played second pretty well except for the glove to hand exchange-invisible ball throw. Lots of talent there.
As far as second base goes, I don’t like platoons there. The second baseman and shortstop need to work together almost as one unit so many times in so many different plays that they need to know each others moves. Familiarity is necessary in the middle infield.
Chuck James is just simply not ready for prime time… but he pitched no worse than our batters hit. Seems his mechanics and follow-through changes every few pitches, although the movement on his pitch never changes. Not a good combination there.

It worked! No, I’m not testy. Lost power there for a few minutes and the net went wacky. Going back and forth between TV constant beeping alerts and NOAA web. Nice storm but the worst seems to be just a few miles south. Pretty bad here so I can just imagine how it must be in the worst of the thing. Looking at the news, coastal Georgia is “red”. Morning, all! I tried to get on last night but the site was down. Had some bad storms here in north ATL about 2:30 in the am (at my Mom’s house). I’m scared to find out what my house looks like. My alarm didn’t go off, so maybe there’s not a tree in the middle of it.

Chuck James is a AAA pitcher. One cannot get by with an 89 mph fastball and an 82 mph changeup as their only two pitches, unless they’re a lot craftier with movement and selection than he. It doesn’t amaze me that he never gets out of the 6th until it’s too late; it amazes me he gets that far before unravelling. Oh, well.

Bear, good info. I did say that I don’t like platooning second or short but I didn’t say that Kelly should keep his job. I know, it’s a tough situation because he’s got talent and he’s a good kid and all, but sumpin’s gotta give. He’s a mediocre second bagger and, well, just look at his numbers… not a consistent hitter and no consistent power.
I’d like to see Kelly included in a package for another SP. Whoever gets him in the trade should use him at first base or left field… not first. A trade would be best for the Braves and I suspect would be best for Kelly as long as he’s not plugged into second base again with his new team.

Bear, I’d go along with that in a minute but we’d need another cleanup hitter in the trade for this season to be competitive. There is no way Kelly (or anyone else outside of Chipper) would replace Tex’s bat. Even though Tex isn’t hitting now, he will. He’ll probably carry the team through stretches this season.
Trading Tex this year screws our whole lineup. Chipper won’t see nearly as many pitches hitting in front of… who, BMac? Frenchy? Kotsay? Nope. Kelly would be fine defensively at first and may (probably will) even come around offensively but not as a power-hitting cleanup guy. Right now, Tex is all we’ve got that fits cleanup and being a switch hitter, he’s hard if not impossible to replace.

WOW, what a storm this morning. Started in around 3 am with high winds, thunder and lightning. I don’t know how many times I was woken up by a nearby thunderclap. Things only got worse as the morning progressed. Even had to cancel a mother’s day brunch with my parents as I didn’t want them driving over any bridges much less through downtown Charleston (which is notorious for flooding when we get rain).
Anyway, Happy Mother’s Day to all you mothers out there. Uh, that didn’t quite come out right.

Berigan, I read the article that you posted earlier about Josh Hamilton. I “knew” him when he was in Charleston in 00 and part of 01. What a nice kid. Someone you genuinely want to root for.
Being an alcoholic or a drug addict is generally considered to be a disease. If Hamilton had lymphoma or diabetes or cancer or any other disease would these same losers still be taunting him? Of course not!
I hope that he is able to channel all the negative energy and continue to do good things both on and off the field.

You guys need to “get out” some, and sample the big city papers like the NY Post, Boston Globe, etc. Yes, that guy in LA is over-the-top, but beat writers in other towns are not music-critic-wannabees and cheer leaders. Also, can you imagine someone from another region reading some of Terence Moore’s “prose” without wondering why the AJC keeps him on. ‘Course they don’t know about those pictures he has of a naked and “compromised” publisher that he keeps in a safety deposit box.

Look at it this way: We don’t care much for Fox, ESPN and the likes but apparently many do. If he(the guy in LA) gets the readers, they get the ad money, and the beat goes on. On a much smaller scale you can start your own blog and control the content. Otherwise, if it offends–don’t read it. I know that sounds like a simplification, but…it’s life by the golden rule.

Bear, the fact that David gave me a serious answer to my nonsensical “query” was humor enough. Actually he handled it pretty well and tried to explain flat ground pitching for rehab, which was in itself funny. Benefit of doubt given… after all, he gets stupid “questions” so much that a comment would have to be completely over the top to be obvious I suppose.

Uncle, a girl I know once had a pelican mistake her for a post on the pier & land on her head. She was a little kid then & those are big heavy birds. Just about knocked her over.

Berigan, we’ve spoken about this before and I don’t want you to think that I’m nagging you because I am NOT. However, you’ve really got to look into a sleep clinic to fix your sleep problems.
I don’t go to the doctor unless I am sick. I’ll bet I haven’t been to the doctor five times in the last five years (knock on wood). But I went to the sleep doctor because I knew that something was wrong. It was the best thing that I could have ever done for myself, my marriage and my kids. If you have sleep apnea, you should know that it can be FATAL. Just ask Reggie White. Oh, that’s right. You can’t because it KILLED him!

Morning, all! My house is ok but man did the wind do some funky stuff in my yard. My super sport was parked in my back yard behind a solid 5-foot fence, and the cover was blown off in the opposite direction some how and up against a tree. I can’t picture it in my mind. Also four heavy, expensive wicker patio chairs were blown about 15 feet across brick up against my fire pit. My neighbor said the gusts got up around 60 mph this afternoon when it was nice and sunny.

Top o’ the mornin’ from the coast on a beautiful, warm February Monday. Oh, that’s right, it’s the middle of May. At 60 degrees and the wind blowing… make that howling, it feels like a late winter/early spring front.
Hope everyone fared well and didn’t get flooded, hit by lightning or blown away by these tropical storm type wind gusts. Hopefully this knocks the rest of the pollen squigglies out of the trees and deposits them in manageable drifts out in the middle of nowhere.
Klobber, you guys had it worse than us. Seems we dodged the worst of it to our south and north. Small tree limbs everywhere and whatever wasn’t nailed down in the yard is tossed around but no damage it appears.
Braves have a double header in Pittsburg today. It’s gonna be miserable baseball weather up there, with a high of 52 and a 70 percent chance of rain. Looks like they should’ve been more patient about calling that one off yesterday.
Wonder if they’ll give the pink bats a rain check and hit with’em today?

Yeah guys and gals, we awoke to the tornado sirens at 5 a.m. Sunday morning. It went north of us; part of my home county and a couple of places a few miles north of here got walloped pretty good. We just had some small branches down in the neighborhood and some frazzled nerves here at the house, but otherwise, we fared well. Thoughts and prayers to those hit by the storms.
Got a lot to do today, even though I’m off for the next two weeks … duty calls.
Need to win both today.

Seriously, if money wasn’t an issue, I’d look into it….don’t want to say how very broke I am these days, but I am…very broke these days.
I had to cough up money for a CT scan I had put off for months, then the b_tch at the hospital(Looking all the world like one of the wives from that Texas cult, even down to her clothes!) made me cough up A LOT of money up front…or not get the test. It was just that simple. If I hadn’t already drank a pint of barium, I probably would have just walked out.
And it turns out I wasted my time and money, only things that showed up were a cyst on my liver, (No big deal) and my many bulging discs. Well, I got some peace of mind that Cancer wasn’t brewing in my guts.
She also told me my next to useless insurance said I had not spent a dollar towards my $2000 deductable(Even with that, I have to come up with $144 a month-man I miss being insured through work!!!) which is really funny considering how many times I have been to my Gastroenterologist this year, and my regular doctor! 🙄
So, to recap, no money for tests, and knowing myself as well as I do, I’d never get to sleep all wired up anyway.
I heard something about a different type of test that is cheaper and simpler that shows the likelihood of someone having Sleep apnea…
Since I have lost a few pounds the last several months, I have noticed a lot less night sweats as well….
I’ll be sleeping fine once my stupid lungs react to the new antibiotics I am on…clearly bronchial passageways just about swell shut on me these days…never used to have this problem when I got sick…just one of the many gifts of getting older! 😛

Berigan, do you have asthma?? Those symptoms are very familiar. When I was in the hospital last, I had pneumonia, bronchitis and a severe asthma attack at the same time. The pneumonia and bronchitis responded to treatment, but the asthma was the one that nearly took me out. My Uncle Bobby died from it some years back. Until I had to deal with it, I wasn’t aware that around 50,000 people (in the USA) DIE from asthma every year. NOT to be messed with!!

Those winds last night were vicious. I stayed at my mom’s house last night. My parents live right on the edge of a wooded area – one of the few wooded areas left with all of these developers hellbent on tearing down every tree in Lilburn/Stone Mountain so that cookie cutter subdivisions can be built and every kid can go to the same schools as the Golden Armed Rightfielder.
At least 5 trees fell last night. Thank God none hit the house. But it’s scary hearing those things fall. It’s like fireworks go off and then all you hear is this big swoosh like Andruw Jones striking out yet again. The strange part is that they don’t make alot of noise when they land for whatever reason. But the snap, crackle, pop and then swoosh noise is loud as hell.
At least none fell on the house or property. We chopped down all the ones that were a danger to the house after the house got hit 3 years ago by a big old tree – or at least we hope we have. Rainstorms, icestorms, windy days can make for some pretty scary days at my parent’s house with all of them trees out there.
The trees didn’t use to be this dangerous. Their neighbor however sold his hundred something acre farm earlier this decade and the developers immediately knocked down every tree and put up yet another subdivision. It has totally screwed up the trees and animals. You used to see more rabbits and deer and raccoons and the like but they have all but disappeared now.
I have definitely seen a difference in the trees. They seem to be dying because they are getting less water due to the subdivision. It has also seemed to change the way the trees lean. It’s like these trees have competitions to get sunlight and twist and mangle themselves to get it. If you take away their water and change the way they stretch themselves out to get sunlight because you tore down trees, they start rotting and leaning themselves over too far and start falling all over the place if you breath or lean on them too heavily.
I dunno. That’s my theory on what I’ve seen is the effect on the environment surrounding my parent’s house following the building of that darn subdivision 5 years ago.

WW, glad your parent’s home wasn’t hit and all are safe. You’re right about the crass development, urban sprawl and detrimental effect on trees and wildlife habitat. When a forest becomes a 100-yard wide patch of trees there are many problems that occur with the trees that are left. For one, they’re not used to handling high wind without their own natural buffer and support. Water shortage caused from developments is an even bigger issue.
I’m involved in fighting that in Savannah right now. Developers, city officials and utility/power companies consider trees mere impediments to squeezing another house into a subdivision or a nuisance because an entrance to a business has to make a little curve instead of a nice straight path to the front door. Power companies needlessly destroy trees by pruning them so heavily that the tree becomes diseased and within a few years, dies. City officials consider anyone who proposes a better, more environmentally sound solution to be trouble making tree huggers. It’s the old school, ‘good old boy’ regime.
In fact, leaving most trees not only is good for the critters, they provide shade, oxygen, aesthetic appeal and an INCREASE in property values. But many developers are so busy chopping trees and running from ‘tree huggers’ they miss the point… and the opportunity.
To many dubious and short-sighted developers, ‘sustainable community’ means developers sustain big bank accounts and clear-cutting momentum while the innocent folks who buy their homes live in barren wastelands.
We’re seeing this idiocy in my old neighborhood, even with new property owners. They find a nice one acre lot, claim they “fall in love” with the neighborhood and all the beautiful 200 year old Live Oaks, then they proceed to take most of the trees down because they want a McMansion with a separate four-car garage. Then they cut off all water to the remaining tree roots because they want to pave half the lot.
A few years ago a neighbor cut down a 200 year old magnolia because she was tired of raking leaves. Even though I offered to rake the leaves for them, they waited until I was on a business trip and cut it down. Magnolias has been around since the jurassic era, but laziness and twisted priorities are destroying them as well as other old growth. They’re taking paradise and turning it into a concrete and brick box. It’s heartbreaking and frustrating.
Man, I do sound like a tree hugger. OK, I’ll get off my soapbox now. Hug a tree today, while they’re still around.

I had never thought of the point you brought up about the change in the wind currents affecting the trees around my parent’s property. Makes alot of sense. These trees were never used to being directly hit with the full force of the wind. But now, like you’re saying, there is little buffer provided to them and the trees that used to be there are not filtering the wind currents. I’ll have to share your thoughts with my Pops. He’s always ranting about the effects of that subdivision on his property.
Another thing I have noticed as a consquence of less trees and more subdivisions is that it is much louder around my parent’s house. The main road is about a mile away. You used to never hear a car over there but now you can hear every car that revs by up there because the trees are no longer muting the sound of that road.
Making matters worse is that they have built a Super Kroger, a movie theater and a Super Wal-Mart up there in addition to the subdivision in the last 7 years so there is now much more traffic that passes through. 20 years ago, there was nothing at all there. Just two huge farms surrounded by the woods.
And for some reason I feel that more houses means more electrical wiring and all that for all those houses. It sounds silly but I always feel like electricity does create a certain buzz sound, especially when everyone is using it. Most don’t think of it or notice it but I do. It seems quieter at night when less electricty is used. But the end result has been that my parent’s house used to be such a quiet, peaceful place to just sit out on the deck and read, write, nap or listen to a Braves game on the radio. It still is but not anything like it was 5 years ago.
A weird thing too is that only 5 years ago, you could listen to the Stone Mountain fireworks and laser show every night from my parent’s yard. Couldn’t see it but could hear it from 1.5 miles away. You could hear every word Ray Charles sang over there. They’ve got really loud speakers. There was a certain charm about that. But now all the increased traffic and loud cars and electrical currents between my parents and the Mountain has made it harder to hear the show.
In Savannah, you guys should be especially careful about overdevelopment. The great charm of Savannah is the peace, quiet, gorgeous trees and so on. There’s a certain atmosphere about that town that absolutely needs to be maintained or it just gets cheapened and becomes just like any other place.
So, I can definitely see your point. You sound like a tree hugger but it really has nothing to do with trees at all. It’s about Savannah and what makes Savannah special – and prosperous. At least, I think that’s what you’re getting at. More money due to overdevelopment in the short term might mean less money for everyone later on.

Resop is warming up? 😯 So, this game is out reach? 😕 What is wrong with Bobby Cox? His game management is in the toilet these days. I’ve thought the world of him for years, but the past year or so, I’ve gotta say I’m very underwhelmed.
Who knew the offense was why the bullpen would be overworked? Having to PH your starter in the 6th…are you kidding me? If that’s the case….put the starters on a 70 pitch limit, 4-man staff, and pitch them every4th day. Good heavens…what a waste of a starter! 😡

HittersBattersItem 1: You get 3 strikes; not 3 pitches. So…look for something in the strike zone!
Item 2: If the pitch is at your hairline, regardless of your height, it is not a strike!
Item 3: You will not hit 1.000! Just move the bloody runner along! It can be a good out…just make sure there aren’t two outs already.
Item 4: Simple math – if the pitcher has thrown 7 balls in the past 10 pitches, what’s the odds his first two to you will be strikes? (Answer: at least as low as Andruw Jones’ batting average)
Item 5: The pitcher doesn’t want to make many pitches…tough! Take pitches…run up his count, like Blanco and Johnson (except when he two strikes already!) There is no time limit on how long you can be at the plate.

It did look like Jurrjens was having some issues in the 5th…but, this is a double header, right??? I thought he had tossed more pitches than he did(68 they said) so, it made little sense to take him out then.
Of course, Blanco and Gotay got back to back walks, and if anyone besides Chipper could hit their weight, we would have a run or two….4 runs in 25 innings against the mightly Pirates….

Well, I just got back in time to see Frenchy make another spectacular popout to short right field again. He might have more power and better luck at the plate if he didn’t have his back foot in the back of the batters box and his front foot halfway to the pitchers mound. With that wide stance how will he possible be anything but flat footed and off-level on his swing? How fundamental is that???
Then I got to see Kelly strike out because he froze like a deer caught in the headlights with a strike 3 right down the middle of the plate. I actually think he was watching Norton at second and he got nervous and self conscious and forgot to swing or something. Let’s keep Infante in for a few more please.
So, I broke for lunch with a plan to watch the game and then get some work done. Lunch was fine. Watching the game put me to sleep. Yup… just woke up. Not a lick of work done. At least I slept like a baby and missed that first contest… uh, game.
These Braves are pitiful. The word they use is ‘pressing’. I’d say not pressing enough. Pulling when they oughta be pushin’ and such. No fundamentals, no energy, no drive, oddball use of pitchers. If they win this final game the announcers and the Braves players will surely say, ‘it’s good to finally get the road monkey off our back and build on this momentum before Philadelphia’, or something ludicrous like that. How about, ‘we just barely avoided a sweep from the lowly Pirates and we’re about to get our arses handed to us in Philly’.
Yuk. Where are the Braves and when will Spring Training be over?

Sorry, SG, but this is the ‘Spring’ portion of the regular season! 😦 So far, they’ve been practicing what they were ‘srping training’, and that game plan ain’t very strong!
Joe and Boog make good points: Kelly and Blanco make the lineup stronger. Both work the counts, both have speed and steal bases, and in Kelly’s case, when he’s cold with the bat, he draws walks. When Frenchy’s cold with the bat, he draws outs. Granted, KJ needs to be back at the 8-hole…and he needs to learn that Rod Carew wrist-flick when he has 2-strikes. Taking those borderline pitches is really the only part of his game that frustrates me…and it frustrates me alike. Carew used to just flick the bat, foul ball…foul ball…foul ball…until got what he wanted, either a pitch to hit, or a ball.

Salty, I just don’t see how Kelly makes the lineup stronger than Infante or Prado when he gets off DL. Kelly’s had his chances the last few years. Give the kids a chance now. Use Kelly as a utility guy.
Either that or put him in the 8 spot and showcase him for a trade. I’m not buying stock in Kelly at this point. Thing is, he’d make someone a good first baseman. Someone that didn’t need him to bat leadoff or above the 7 spot.

Salty… right on. That’s an example of why the Braves have been losing. The little things like moving runners over seem to escape the entire team and more to the point, the coaching staff. Yunel is a great talent, but somebody needs to coach him, he’s young. Sometimes I think Cox and Company are spectators too often. Maybe I’m just frustrated with the team right now. But still…

SG; My favorite fishing memories are standing in the surf at Pawley’s Island fishing with a cane pole and bobber, baited with shrimp and catching Pompano. Then the maid(yes, this was a long time ago)would clean ’em and cook ’em up for mid-day lunch. I can smell ’em now. Then a nap in the Pawley’s Island hammock lulled to sleep by the sounds of sea birds and surf. Pardon me while I sob.

Pal, of all the fishing I’ve done… from offshore blue water billfish, dolphin, wahoo, grouper, snapper and king mackerel to inshore trout, flounder, spottail bass and also lot’s of fresh water river and lake fishing for crappie and mostly largemouth bass that I’ve done in m life, which is an awful lot… surf fishing for Red Drum is probably my favorite of all.
It’s the whole, clean, beautiful, quiet time… standing knee deep in the surf on a barrier island with just your friends. Cold beer, sammiches, surf rods and sand spikes… ahhh, that’s the good life. Like heaven on earth.
You talked me into it. Gonna have to get back out there real soon.

Paladin, yeah, my parents live real close to where you are saying you once lived. My parents live over by Five Forks Trickum and Rockbridge. I’m sorry to tell you but your old house is very close to Cynthia McKinney Parkway. How the hell any road ever got named for her crazy ass I’ll never know. But I’m gonna blame you since you lived closer to it. You guys were probably neighbors at one time.

Paladin, my parents thankfully live in the small sliver of Stone Mountain that is in Gwinnett County. McKinney makes me sick. Despite the conversation from the other day, I don’t have a problem with a street being named for a civil rights leader. There can’t be enough named for them in my opinion. But I do agree that they shouldn’t rename streets that were named after someone else. But Cynthia McKinney? How the hell do you name a street or parkway after that crazy psycho? Disgraceful. You should have to accomplish something for the betterment of the city, town, state, region or country before having something named after you. That crazy broad has done nothing except disgrace herself, her state and her race – the human race and the black race.

And last night I left you with some “thoughts”(I even got some comments on them) here are some more.
In my area, during a 10 year and younger girls softball game, an asst. “coach” went out to argue a call. After words with the ump, the ump threw his out. Then this guy punched out the ump, literally. The um was knocked unconscious. Now, there is no one more competitive than me, but this is sick. The coach is charged with agravate3d assault(I hope he gets jail time)and his team is thrown out of the tournament. Isn’t this game FOR the kids? What a douche bag!
Secondly, this situation in Texas and the separation of children from their parents. Yes, there is some hanky panky going on, but with under 10 year old children. That has to be proven in a court of law. And until it is, separating children from their parents is wrong. Didn’t we go through this discrimination against others for what ever reasons/ This could be the most unjust thing we have done since the criminal interment of friendly Japanese in world war II.

“There can scarcely be imagined a more fundamental and fiercely guarded right than the right of a natural parent to its offspring. To terminate that right is to sever that right for the future as effectively in the law as if it never existed. It is a tearing of the flesh.” Levya v. Brooks, 145 Ga. App. 619 at 623-624 (1978).
“The breaking of the tie that binds parent to child can never be justified without the most solid and substantial reasons, established by plain proof. In any form of proceeding, the sundering of such ties should always be approached by courts with great caution and with a deep sense of responsibility.” Taylor v. Taylor, 280 Ga. 88 at 90 (2005).
“Because no judicial determination has more drastic significance than permanently severing a parent-child relationship, such severance must be exercised cautiously and scrutinized deliberately.” In the Interest of T.P., 270 Ga. App. 700 at 707 (2004).

“It is not proper to consider the question of termination of parental rights based solely upon a welfare of the child test.” Hooks v. Baldwin County DFCS, 162 Ga. App. 142 (1982).
“There can be little doubt that due process would be offended if a state attempts a forcible breakup of a natural family, over the objection of the parents, without some showing of unfitness and for the sole reason that to do so was thought to be in the children’s best interest.” Ray v. DHR, 155 Ga. App. 81 at 88 (1980).
“Parental rights to a child… … may not be terminated without some required showing of parental unfitness, caused either by intentional or unintentional misconduct resulting in abuse or neglect of the child, or by what is tantamount to physical or mental incapability to care for the child.” In re M.L.G., 170 Ga. App. 642 at 645 (1984).
“A finding of unfitness must center on the parent alone.” In the Interest of H.L.T., 164 Ga. App. 517 at 520 (1982).
“Thankfully, we have not yet reached the point where the State is authorized to take children away from an admittedly fit mother based solely on the mere possibility that she may in the future have contact with someone who has previously beaten her.” In the Interest of C.D.E., 248 Ga. App. 756 at 762 (2001).
Most of that law though is meant for termination of parental rights hearings. They’re not that far along in the game yet. They are only at the dependency/deprivation stage of the game. It’s easier to take the kid away then it is to terminate parental rights.

Thank you ww, but the harm they may be doing to the children does not justify the means. I say give the young children back to the parents and until this matter is settled in court, have regular inspections by children services to insure that the children are not being mistreated. If you must be in error, make your error in the interest of the child.

Paladin, I’m not really disagreeing with you. Although I have removed hundreds of kids from the homes of bad parents, I have also defended hundreds of parents who have had their kids removed from the home. So my stance on it would depend on who I am representing.

Howdy, all! Watching the Braves lately has made me think “There’s nothing like the NBA playoffs on TNT.” Yikes, they suck. Part of it is a hitting coach who doesn’t stress fundamentals and part is a manager who won’t shake things up when everyone’s “pressing.” Oh, well.

I just can’t get into the NBA anymore. I got into the Hawks series but that’s it. It is so boring. I used to watch every playoff game. The Braves are a mess. I often wonder whether TP tries to make them well rounded hitters. What exactly does Pendleton do and who has he made better? It just seems like they all stay the same or they get worse. The only ones who get better or stay good are Chipper and McCann because their fathers are their hitting coaches. Yunel luckily has a language barrier so he doesn’t have to let Pendleton contaminate his hitting with bad advice

Man, am I tired. Getting up first thing in the morning to go see my bank-robbing buddy in court. When I lived in south Ga. I was used to seeing a young redneck friend or two in orange every now and then; it’s weirder now with middle age and middle class friends.

CL, it is definitely a case by case basis. It’s alot easier being the defense attorney though because you don’t have to concern yourself with that. On the other side, you have to fret over whether you have wrongfully removed a kid and placed them into a screwed up foster care system or whether they will end up dead or abused if you return them to momma.

Roger McDowell seems to be doing a better job this year. I think the Braves have definitely tried to move towards having more McDowell style pitchers who keep the ball down and get lots of groundballs. Bennett, Acosta, Jurrjens, Hudson, JoJo all have G/F ratios over 2. Glavine has raised his up to 1.67 so far this year. I definitely think it is the development of an organizational change in philosophy to suit McDowell’s strengths.

I agree with that, ww. But on the field, it often seems as though the kids are lost, not sure what they’re supposed to be doing. I admit to not seeing any games these last few days but those I’ve seen give me impression that they are surprised when they actually complete a play without fouling it up. And bunting skills??? 🙄 Dunno.

Somebody correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t basic fundamentals and executions supposed to be taught and refined in the Minor Leagues?? Seems that those skills should be almost automatic by the time they reach the ML.

I agree, CL. They are just not well rounded ballplayers at all. They don’t execute the little things that matter. Some want to call it luck but it’s not luck to hit behind a runner, to execute a hit and run, to steal a base, to take an extra base, to complete a double play, to drop a bunt, to hit the other way, to get a sac fly, to take pitches to tire a pitcher out or to make him throw the pitch you need, to be aggressive with the bat when the situation warrants getting a run home. It’s just sorry. A bunch of sluggers who actually are not all that great at slugging. It’s not like they have a bunch fo 40 home run hitters. Plus, there is no fire and desire. You would never know they were such a young team with the lack of passion they play with.
Watch them go out and sweep the Phillies now though. 🙂 That of course would be followed by losing 5 of the next 6

Did you read the Carroll Rogers story the other day on Chipper? That was a funny story Chipper told about how he tried to quit switch hitting while in rookie ball. The manager let him hit only from the right side. Cox and Paul Snyder showed up to watch a game and saw Chipper not switch hitting. Cox was livid because he drafted Chipper to be a switch hitter. The manager got fired a few days later.

Going back to my cousins’ discussion earlier, one of the things I really love about Rabun County is that 70% of the county can never be developed. 3 state parks, a lot of national forest land & a lot of Georgia Power land that can’t be touched.

THAT is a real blessing! The ‘developers’ have destroyed too much of the land already. The county I live in used to be a wonderfully charming and beautiful place. In less than 20 years, it has been clear-cut, over-built and paved over. Completely destroyed. There aren’t enough words to express how much I hate it.

Times like these I really wish we had the DH in the NL…yes, I am a heretic! 😉 But, imagine how different this team would be with Blanco leading off!
Diaz could Dh, with Norton, Johnson, and Gotay spelling him from time to time(Frenchy could DH and save a day on the field)I guess we will just have to be happy with his 2 starts a week….

And if not Blanco, Kotsay. I like KJ alot, and he does take alot of pitches and draw a few walks, but he really needs to be dropped way down in the order. Just swap him with either Blanco or Kotsay; simple enough.
CL: Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, on this team can bunt. That should be a skill taught in the minors, but maintained in the majors. I, like WW, blame TP. I have yet to see his value to this team. Nice guy and all, rides a pretty motorcycle, but contributes nothing that I can see. It’s a glaring deficiency to me. You have batters not working the count, not going with the pitch, not executing basics… if it ain’t the hitting coaches job to teach hitting, whose is it? To me, it rests squarely on his shoulders. And an excellent point was made that the two most consistent hitters on this team, Chipper and Mac, have their own hitting coaches, being their respective fathers. Speaks volumes to me…

As you all know by now, my ten year old son plays baseball. His coach LAST YEAR started teaching the team how to bunt. This year, his coach has spent a lot of time on the subject. Several times this year, certain players have been called upon to move the runner(s) over via the bunt in games.
Every boy is expected to be able to bunt properly, even the sluggers, although they are not called upon to do so in a game very often. During practice, any boy that executes poorly on bunting drills gets to run poles in the outfield after practice. I promise, it helps.
The fact that professional ball players, who have undoubtedly been working on their bunting skills for YEARS, can not execute a bunt properly is pathetic. They should all have to run poles after practice. So should their coaches, for that matter.

DETROIT (AP) – A Detroit-based group hopes to use empty shipping containers to build a $1.8 million, 17-unit condominium project.
The Detroit Free Press reports Tuesday the project would stack empty containers four high, cut in windows and doors, install plumbing, stairways and heating, and add amenities such as balconies and landscaped patios.
Groundbreaking could take place this fall on the project if it wins city approval, and it could open in 2009. It’s designed by Detroit-based architect Steven Flum.
Developers plan to offer condominium units measuring 960 to 1,920 square feet. Prices will range from about $100,000 to about $190,000.

He’s scheduled to make his first AA start tonight. He’s pitching in the rotation spot of righty Brad Nelson, who was promoted from Pearl to Richmond. I’ll see what I can dig up on Nelson…

Brad Nelson:
Has made 2 appearances as a reliever at AAA. Has a couple of K’s in 1.0 IP and no ERA.
At AA, he made 1 start, appeared in 8 other games as a reliever and had a 4.76 ERA in 22.2 IP. He did, however, have 16 K’s and only 3 BB’s.
In 2007, he played at A, AA and AAA. Yearly totals: He finished the year with a 9-2 racord and a 3.13 ERA. He had 65 K’s and 29 BB’s in 41 appearances (6 as starter) and 100.2 IP.
He is most likely a non-factor with the major league team this year, so I have no idea why I am spending this much time and energy on him… 😐

Why is Norton hitting 5th? Makes no damn sense. I swear Bobby has zero clue at times. He finally makes the changes in the lineup that need to be made and then he goes and screws it up by hitting Norton 5th. If I didn’t know better, I would say Cox has a self-destructive streak and likes to sabotage himself

I guess I just don’t see what y’all do in Jo-Jo. Every time I’ve watched him, he looks pretty good for 2-4 innings and then falls to pieces. Hell, even Chuck James can go 5. Not sure where this “Future top of the rotation” talk comes from or why. Charlie Morton I can see; he at least has overpowering stuff.

This reminds of a time on my skating board when we were trying to explain “spring chicken” to a member in Taiwan. It’s cool having people from all over the world & nearly all of them speak (type?) English quite well but some have trouble with figures of speech & expressions that we use all the time without thinking about it. Very tricky to explain some of them.

I know what you mean about our idioms confusing bloggers from other countries. I mentioned “the temperatures dropped like a rock” – and they thought that was so unique, had never heard it. Surely they must have expressions but I never hear/read of them.

Sometimes our administrator translates skating articles from Russia with a program she has. Every now & then they use an expression that we can’t figure out or doesn’t even translate properly to English & we have to wait for one of our Russian members to explain. Sometimes we still don’t get it.

So the good news is that there’s a lot of pretty stuff in the yard. The azaleas are still beautiful, the mountain laurel is starting to open, the pink dogwood is hanging onto its blooms & there are about 50 lavender irises in the garden. Chris, thanks for your advice on the new bluebird box. It seems to be occupied since there was a gorgeous bluebird hanging around by it all day.
The bad news? Took the mower to the shop today since it wouldn’t start & the first 2 roofers we had come out for estimates told us the roof was in very bad shape ( we kinda knew that already).

FBG, I’m so pleased that you put a blue bird box up AND that you’ve got inhabitants! Do they have babies? A family of chickadees took up residence in our bluebird box this year. I didn’t have the heart to kick them out since I kind of like them too but definitely prefer the bluebirds. I suspect that we didn’t get blue birds this year because late last year something (squirrel, perhaps raccoon) tried to get into the box. It was older and the cedar was a little dried out, which I didn’t realize. It chewed a big hole in the opening. Of course I replaced the box with a new one that I built from a very dense type of wood called ipe but the blue birds must have remembered. Oh well, maybe next year. We still see them year round as they don’t migrate from here. Not sure if your new area is too cold in the winter or not.
If you really want to give them a treat and encourage to stay and come back next year, buy them some meal worms. They love them, especially before the babies fledge.
I did have a nice sighting the other day. A pair of painted buntings were checking out one of the feeders in my back yard.
