123: Let the Final Games Begin…

Good morning folks….. Well, the time has finally come for the Braves to make the push to go into the play-offs with a big head of momentum.

I think the last thing we Braves fans want to see is the Los Bravos backing into October. I guess this means for me, no more Kameron Loe, no more “B” squad line ups, no more en mass days of rest.

Funny how even with a 14 game lead, how tenuous I feel about the Atlanta team’s chances going into October.

The Braves have a stable of pitchers who are capable of throwing a no hitter on any given night, unfortunately, they are also capable of being bombed out of existence on any given night. Besieged by walks, coupled with tape measure home-runs.

So, what to do? First off, put Philly out of their misery quickly. Then dispatch the Marlins and finally drive a stake thru the heart of the Nationals’ hope for a final wild card spot by taking all three from the gNats.

Right now, the Braves have a big ol’ bulls eye on their backs as far as the rest of the NL East is concerned. Kids trying to win a spot on next year’s roster on their respective teams. Veterans trying to show they are still relevant and teams in general saying we can beat you even if you win the title.

Working against the Braves right now are certain players who don’t feel the need to continue to play all out. We have seen many times in the past that employing the button downed, aloof approach as far as the playoffs has backfired on the Braves.

The one real edge this year’s edition of the Atlanta Braves is they are all relatively young, but still have been hardened by the memories of past failures.

They also have shown the ability to overcome the loss of key players. Despite the

absence of Tim Hudson, Brandon Beachy, Jonny Venters, Christian Martinez, Eric O’Flarety and at times Jorden Walden and others, the Braves have continued to lead the league in wins, ERA, saves and other assorted stats.

Despite the absence at various times their front line catcher, Brian McCann, time spent on the DL by Jordan Schafer, Freedie Freeman, Reed Johnson and now Jason Heyward, the Braves have continued to win.

Finally, despite the lack of production by the Braves’ two highest paid players in BJ Upton and Dan Uggla have still won to the point they lead all of Major League Baseball with the best record.

So Braves fans, as we continue to ride the wave of success the Braves have had this season, it is with great trepidation we await the final games of September and hoped for momentum to go all the way to the World Series.

Gil, that might be your best lead yet, and that’s saying something! 🙂 You might have missed your calling…then again, you are doing it right now, aren’t you?
Sorry about you getting all bruised up! It’s funny, I can’t tell you how many folks I know that get stubborn about using Canes and walkers…and I hear about them falling down a lot. No joke, one woman I used to play trivia with, has some weird weak ankle issue that is hereditary…anyway, she would fall down once a month, if not more often, out in public! There’s stubborn, then there’s STUBBORN. I think she has finally had to start using a walker out in public. Amazed she never broke her hands or her face, falling all the time.
I think people today don’t want to make any concessions to age, which is great, to a point. But, heck I think a cane (or walking stick) can be kinda cool. And much cooler than cracked bones….

And Gil, there is that funny feeling, as if we have seen this all before, isn’t there? I remember one of those 100+ win seasons, where we beat up on the teams we would face in the playoffs all season long, then Oct came along, and bam, those teams got early leads, and games were over in the 4th inning.
I really hope that Freddy has learned some from his mistakes, and Bobby’s there has to be a fine line between being too aggressive, too hyper to get out of the gates fast, verses what seemed to be the impression, we have very good starters, if they keep it to 2 runs, we will win….felt like sometimes the team was just like a tentative SS, waiting for the ball to come to them, instead of charging the ball.
And of course, BJ has playoff experience, F.F. is as clutch as it gets, Chris Johnson is smart enough to go the other way all day(instead of muscling up when the bases are loaded, and all we need is a single) Justin seems to enjoy the limelight, he may really come alive like some guys do…Simmons could sneak up on a team, and hit a timely homer….
It is a different team, no doubt.
It will be fun to see how they all react! 🙂

I just hope the Braves themselves don’t feel this sense of almost dread as post-season approaches. I just don’t want them to come up “a day late and a dollar short”. Again. They have to concentrate on making THIS play, THIS at-bat, THIS base, THIS run – if they do that, they’ll win. I think that even a veteran would feel some nerves on the WS stage, and I’m sure it would feel overwhelming to younger players. One step at a time.

This time, the team IS good enough to do it. They’ve already beaten everybody and their record reflects their accomplishments. I really hope they’ll realize that. I know what it is to feel like you’re always 2nd best, never good enough to BE the best, and I truly hope they don’t fall into that thinking. Mental preparedness will be the key.

Well, it’s not like we didn’t see it coming…. I love Evan Gattis but Fredi should at least be playing Schafer against the right handers and let Evan play against the leftys.

I am so done with BJ Upton….. Like one fan in the stands was overheard saying, “Mr Strike-out”…

Dan Uggla says despite his lack of success in actually hitting the ball, he is feeling much better at the plate. I guess that means if he were to actually make contact, he would become absolutely euphoric….

Okay Maholm, surprise me and out pitch Cole Hammels this afternoon…..

Besides, I still would like to see the Braves win 100 games this season…

Is it just me or does anyone else get the sense of “attitude” from the Upton brothers? I think I would rather have Michael Bourne back for the same money…. Heyward can’t get back soon enough to suit me. At least he gives the appearance of giving a rat’s a**….

Gil, yup…something about the Upton bros bugs me…like they have to put on a good act. Well spoken, they aren’t thugs. But, I think they think they are privileged…and it’s got to be hard, especially on BJ to find out you can really and truly suck, and need to humble yourself, ask for help, work harder, etc, etc, etc…
and that home run by Gattis…oh my. 480, to near dead center, likely the longest regular season homer this year…

The offense let the pitchers down yesterday. Friday too. Well, you have to have a short memory to survive in this league. Time for the Braves to win tonight with Medlin on the mound in Miami. Maybe even Dan will get it turned around tonight. We can only hope.

Evan almost hit that fastball out in his second at-bat too. Hammels body language was priceless….

“I felt like I was throwing a golf ball out there and he had a driver,” Hamels said. “He’s probably going to be in that strongest man competition at the end of the year. Definitely going to vote on him because he’ll win. It was impressive.”
Hamels dropped his head in the fifth, like he thought Gattis had taken him deep again, but center fielder Cesar Hernandez tracked that one down on the warning track.
“I guess if the 50 mph winds blowing in didn’t keep it in play, it definitely would have been off the wall,” Hamels said. “Or through it.”

I guess you have to take something positive away from this weekend’s loss to the Phillies. I have to say, Hamels’ comments made me smile.

After mustering little offense in their recent 3 games in Philly, I’d go with the following lineups:

    vs. RHP:

    Schafer (L) CF
    Simba (R) SS
    Freddie (L) 1B
    Gattis (R) LF
    JUp (R) RF
    BMac (L) C
    CJohnson (R) 3B
    Tommy La Stella (L) 2B

    vs. LHP:

    Schafer (L) CF
    Simba (R) SS
    Freddie (L) 1B
    Gattis (R) LF
    JUp (R) RF
    CJohnson (R) 3B
    Bethancourt (L) C
    Tommy La Stella (L) 2B

Dan Struggla and BJ “0-fer” Upton can either get better or get out of the way. I understand – and support – the “let them play their way out of it” approach. But, it’s September. It’s time to step on a few faces with a hobnailed boot and crush some rivals. We no longer have the luxury of “a long season to get some guys going”. The last thing I want to see from these Braves is for them to be so dominating in June, July and August, and then limp through September into October. I’d rather just turn my attention to other things and not endure the disappointment.

I want to see a killer instinct. I want to see this team put everyone else in the league on notice. I want to see this team put the AL on notice. I want to see this team make a statement. “We have a healthy lead and are going to rest some guys” is not a statement. That’s a settlement. Freddie has earned my respect this season, and I am completely on his side. But he’ll lose me pretty quickly with a passive “coast into the playoffs” approach.

I know we can’t do anything about the injuries. I get that. JHey’s was crushing, and required a couple of our guys (hello, calling Mr.’s Uggla and Upton) to step up. It hasn’t happened. In my opinion, the time for waiting any longer has passed. It’s time to be proactive, whatever that entails. The answer to CF is already on the roster. That’s the easy part. The answer to 2B is not so easy, but can young Mr. La Stella be any worse? Seriously, can he? Uggla is 9-for-90 w/ no HR, 4 RBI, 19 BB, 32 K in past 28 games, including 4-for-30 (.133) with no XBH, no RBI, 9 BB, 9 K since LASIK (numbers courtesy of Mr. O’B). I see no step backward giving the youngster a chance to perform. What’s the worse that can happen? He’ll go 4-30? ’nuff said…

One other very important consideration to my rant above. Mr. La Stella is not on the 40-man roster. The Braves are not likely to add him for 3 weeks in September. And in fairness, BJ is hitting .280-ish in September. But his 0-Philly is just annoying. And that doesn’t help at 2B anyway, unless BJ wants to go play some innings there. 😉

I just felt the need to rant on getting swept in Philadelphia. I don’t like the lull. It smacks of complacency, and I hate complacency.

Coffee, Raisins. 🙂 But you voice the same feelings that the rest of us feel/have felt in that I HATE to see them drop off the map and get blown away at the end of a really great season. And they’d better not make the mistake of assuming that the rest of MLB isn’t gunning for them. They’re first and everybody wants to take them down. I fully agree with you – I want to see some tigers busting out of that dugout – every game. I want them to say, “You may beat us, but you’re sure as shootin’ gonna have to work for it!”
Or something. I’m so “over” BJ I can barely stand it. I would have thought that the brothers would have egged each other on, but a lot of money will do strange things to some people’s attitudes. The team can’t rely on one or two guys, all of them have to show up ready to give their best.

Okay, last nights’ game was a little more like. I thought Meds was really outstanding but (There is always a but), he really runs out of gas at 100 pitches. Still, he kept the fish off balance all game long. Except for Coglin, Coglin looks like the guy who won the ROY a couple of seasons ago.

The scorcher Evan hit down the third base line for a two run double really loosened up the Braves last night. The whole tenor of the game changed after that at-bat. In addition, I think he has turned himself into a really decent outfielder.

Anyone else think that Freddie G needs to give Freeman a couple of nights off? The kid looks whipped out there. I think his knee is really barking at him and it is affecting his swing. Just is not able to push off on it. Let Gerald Laird play a game or two at first. Use your reserves the right way. Sprinkle them in along the way. Not give them all a night off at the same time.

I would like to see Bethencourt get a start or two behind the dish too. Hey, what other team in baseball has four really good catchers on their club right now?

Let Gerald Laird play a game or two at first.

So odd that you would say that, Gil. I wondered to myself yesterday how the Braves might use Laird next season (he’s signed through 2014) if they plan on using Bethancourt and Gattis in a catching tandem of sorts. And in that sense, I wondered if he could back up 1B as well as C. Had never really considered it before last night, and then you mention it today. Great minds… right?

Anyway, to answer that question: over is 11 year Major League career, he has made a grand total of 2 appearances, for 1 inning each, at 1B. Once in ’09 with Detroit and once in ’11 with St. Louis… handling all two chances cleanly.

By contrast, Evan Gattis has logged 33 innings there in his brief 6 month Major League career. Anything to keep his bat in the lineup, right? But before we laugh too much, he only made 1 error over there in those 33 innings. He’s a plugger… just wind him up and stick him out there somewhere.

Last night’s final out has to be one for the record books. A 98mph fastball thru the 5 hole (passed ball) winds up bouncing straight back to McCann thus allowing him to throw to Chris Johnson to catch the Marlin’s base runner in a run down. Almost as improbable as J-Up not scoring from second base on a double by Free… Just some strange baseball.

When you are winning, the ball bounces your way, when you get snake bit, those same balls pop out of your glove…

Too bad Dan can’t go down to Gwennett to get his timing back.

I saw a comment somewhere about the Braves power production being down… That is what happens when you are not trying to hit three run homers every at-bat. Cuts down on your strike outs however…

I am wondering if Dan and BJ are getting the message? I wonder if BJ cares? I know Dan is dying inside but has no one to blame but himself. If only he would cut down on that massive swing of his and take those low and away fastballs the other way, teams would come in on him more. Thus, seeing more pitches to drive for the occasional homerun.

Chris Johnson has power but he has opted to become a contact hitter. he will put some in the seats but his goal every at bat seems to be to make contact and get on base.

Tonight’s game should be interesting. This kid Fernandez of the Marlins looks like a real keeper. One thing Mike Minor has going for him is Marlin’s Park does not give up any cheap home runs. Mike is a fly ball pitcher so as long as they have reasonable hang time, flyballs should be outs.

“He’s certainly a guy that I think will step forward and claim that third-base job. He’s a good player and a good kid. Stetson University is a great place that’s turned out a lot of great players through the years, and Chris is another in a long line.” – Chipper Jones, February 25, 2013

V, very good article. Explains things very well. I just hope we have a bit of the Giants have had…hungry guys that know you don’t always get the chance to go deep in the playoffs. or even get to the playoffs(who predicted the Nats having the year they had?)
But, we just don’t know that Minor, Teheran, or Meds can shut down a team like the Dodgers, or Cards Ace(s) can. They may raise to the occasion. Or they may pitch a very good game, but lose 2-1, 3-2. It might be best to feel “we” are the underdogs against the Dodgers or Cards, so that if we do beat them, we will be even more ecstatic about that fact! 🙂

Anyone remember when the Braves had the best pitching staff going into the playoff? Just like the game last night, one ball bouncing the right or wrong way can change the entire outcome. One bad hop, one umpire ruling (remember last years infamous infield fly which was hit 225 feet from home) can change the tenor of the game. It is a crap shoot. Now, making a hard six can be difficult but you just never know when a player, a team. an injury even the weather will change the course of the play-offs.

First things first, get into the play-offs then worry about match ups.

Besides, the Braves are a very young team and should improve with age, just have to be careful they don’t get too old too soon. That is the GM’s job. I hated seeing Andruw leave but do you think the Braves knew something that a lot of the rest of us didn’t?

Nope, just get there, then we will sort it out. I would like to see the Braves clinch this thing this week-end at home, they can have a nice champagne party in front of the home folks and then go into DC and drive a stake thru the gNats’ play-off hopes.

And in the pre-game, I saw Jose Fernandez’ press conference from last night. The kid grew up alot in those couple of hours. Maturity often comes after a tongue lashing from your manager. I don’t mind a kid having fun but this is not the NBA or NFL. Trash talking is not an accepted practice in baseball, At least outside of Cuba evidently because all the hot dogs seem to be coming out of that country.

It is 6-1 good guys as I opine. Good to see Gattis delivering and I know CJ feels a bit of redemption. Fab 5 with a nice two run poke into right center. One thing for sure, if you hit a home run in Marlins Park, you earned it.

Nats are working on a six game winning steak, a little bit too late for them me thinks. They play a 3 game set with the Phillies at home beginning tonight and I don’t think they like each other too much. I don’t expect Washington to sweep them.

Braves play the Padres and two of three is fine.

Garcia looked really good yesterday. I know he is not a number one but he sure looked more effective than Mulholm has in the past month.

Garcia has guile; Maholm has a sore arm. I would not mind in the least having a guy like Freddy Garcia on the post-season roster. He’ll not only help on the hump, but also in the clubhouse… plenty of veteran playoff experience.

For a team that supposedly can’t “manufacture” runs, the Braves sure have been hitting alot of doubles lately. And now that I think about it, I think I’ll rant just a little bit:

The Braves are 4th in the NL in runs scored with 631. Now, I’m no rocket surgeon, but I haven’t seen one game start with runs already on the board. I haven’t watched one batter stand in the box, open a can or bottle and have a couple of runs fall out. I haven’t seen one opposing pitcher petition the umpire to just grant the Braves any runs. I haven’t heard of Bud Selig ordering the official scorer to insert any runs into the scorebook. I have not at any time observed the Braves place any numbers on the scoreboard that did not directly result from a runner crossing the plate.

Now, I suppose that “manufacturing” and “driving in” really comes down to symantics, but last I checked, the Braves had to earn each and every one of their 631 runs scored… more than 11 other National League teams including LA and Pittsburgh, 2 strong candidates to make the post-season.

So this bogus concept that the Braves cannot “manufacture” runs can just go sit next to Buster Olney in the pressbox. (He’s just bitter that the Yankees aren’t already a lock for the playoffs anyway.)

As for the “no veteran ace in the rotation” notion, I can sum my rebuttal up in 4 words – Smoltz, Glavine, Avery, 1991.

    Very good opine Raisins.

The more I read and the more I listen to “National media” types, the more I am convinced they are lazy. They hear something someone else says and they just parrot it over and over until they become convinced that it must be true.

The method by which the Braves score runs is very dependent upon whom is in the line up on a particular day. It also depends on the starting pitcher for the opposing team. I’ll be truthful, I have no idea how teams like the Padres and the Brewers etc score runs. I must rely upon the observations of others. Thus, I don’t really comment on them.

I can make one observation however, I am not sure as to how much pressure AJ Burnette can withstand. After all, he could not handle the heat in New York. Some guys step up, some can’t, a little like a guy who can pitch in the eight inning but cannot close.

Now, a comment about character The talking heads on MLB and ESPN are lusting over Phuig as a rookie of the year candidate. Me, I am an Evan Gattis fan and here is why. El Orso Blanco I think will not wilt under pressure, The mad Cuban is a lot like Zambrano, he cannot keep his emotions in check. Yep, I think Phuig has more raw talent but Evan plays with more heart.

Yes, we have all seen how a great pitching staff can win a World Series. Just look at how great the Tigers were last year… Uh.. never mind….

Well, what I think we have to admit, is the offense is…streaky. I think we now know why the Diamondbacks gave up on J Up. Yesterday, he had his first RBI in 19 games. That’s hard to do. 3 Extra base hits for the month so far.
We have 2 starters(well had) that are hitting sub .200. McCann is hitting .225 since the all star break. FF has 98 RBI’s no else has more than 65(And yeah, there are several MVP types this year, but for FF not to be even in the running as I seem to hear, is stoopid-punished because of our huge lead, there would be no huge lead, IMO without him) …
I just hope with all the rest McCann has gotten, and most of the starters save F.F. that come playoff time, they will be healthy, and ready to tear the cover off the ball! If everyone got hot in Oct, I don’t think anyone could stop them.

Gil, I was out and about last night…I didn’t even know a rookie was going to start! He sounded good, how’d he look? Yeah, we should start calling F.G what they called Sparky back in the day…Captain Hook. No need to take him out there. The bullpen is looking a bit worn down. Once they clinch(which is going to take longer because of this roll the Nats are on) they will need more rest than anybody else on the team…

Ber, the kid, Hale, looked really sharp. Fastball between 91 and 94. easy gas, wicked change and plus slider. Reminded me a lot of Bechy before he hurt his elbow. Worked both sides of the plate, nothing hard really hit off him. A couple of seeing eye grounders and bloops. I was stunned they took him out after 5 innings. He could have gone six easy, then maybe they would not have had to pitched Alaya two innings.

Braves had a shot but McCann hit a shot back up the middle that the pitcher snared out of self defense. Threat over….

Woohoo… Magic number at four, Meds really looked right on Saturday night. The offense was back to it’s old leaving the bases loaded routine but eke out just enough and despite causing me to have knots in my stomach, Kimbrel held on to save number 47…

The gNats are now playing like everyone thought they would at the start of the season, It might just be too much for them to overcome now. The Braves are the only team which has faltered of late and even they are not playing awful ball. Just so so…. I sure hope J-Hey rounds into form quickly.

Teheran on the hill today. The Phillies have a young rookie going against Zimmermann today so best case will be for the Braves to get it down to 3. Washington knows they have their backs against the wall.

A day off today, good… The Braves need to regroup, enjoy their trip to Chicago and wrap this thing up.

It was good to see Dan get back into the swing of things, nothing like a little time on the pine to allow a player to “get his mind right” . So much time to reflect upon the error of his ways.

I would like the Braves to give Freeman a couple of days off too. Not that he is playing badly, just allow him to rest his knees. Play Joey T at first a game or two. Time to get Bethancourt into a game also and perhaps give Laird some at-bats.

I have to hand it to the gNats. They played the last month a lot like everyone expected for them to at the beginning of the season. Like everyone says, You can’t win a championship in April and May but you sure can lose it. Then again, after watching the Braves this season, maybe you can win it in April.

Don’t think the Nats can do it now. 5 1/2 with 10 games to go.
Really wish the Pirates would win the NL central, but the Cards have it made, they don’t have to play either the Reds or Pirates, while those two teams get to beat each other up for 6 games.

When teams get to this point in the season, you can tell the difference between young teams and those laden with veterans. Young teams tense up. Start playing mot to lose verses playing to win. A lot of difference in making free throws during practice verses making the front end of a one and one with 1 second on the clock and the game on the line.

    Ask Brooks Conrad about that….

Anyway, Ber, I did not watch the night game and did not turn last night’s game on until the 5th inning… Nerves you know..

If we win today (day game, Ber!!), and the Nats get beat by Miami – it could happen – then the boys will celebrate in their hotel… or more likely they’ll all hang around the visitors’ clubhouse in Chi-town and catch the Nats game on TV. Nice article on Mac… http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130919&content_id=61088624&vkey=news_atl&c_id=atl

As these last few weeks have rolled on by, my stance on BMac has changed a good bit. I’ve watched Gattis become an at least passable LF, and I’ve watched our other OF’s have many mental/physical/injury struggles. As constructed, our roster is in pretty good shape and quite flexible. I’m not so sure I want to take our leader out, and in the process take Gattis out of the role he has played pretty well thus far. It works… why mess with it? (Isn’t that the bottom line? You find what works; you stick with it. Not rocket surgery…) And I think if you’re smart, and make Mac your DH in all your AL ballparks, maybe you can preserve him for another 4 years as a catcher. And the reality is that he’ll have as much impact on our young pitchers as Roger will. They are the key to maintaining our competitiveness for any length of time. Mac is a part of them being successful.

Let’s face it… the Braves are not going to spend alot more money next season in FA. Where would they? Huddy might get another year or 2, but it won’t be for a ton of $$. They aren’t likely to add another pitcher as they are young and talented now. Bullpen is fine. Lineup is locked and loaded. Bench will get stronger with the return of Ramiro Pena. They can afford to bring Mac back. 4 years and $50M might do it. Maybe 4/$55M + a 5th year option. He’d get more elsewhere – NYY and Texas are already backing up the Brinks trucks – but I do think he wants to stay at home in Atlanta. Just don’t disrespect the guy, and he’ll negotiate fairly.

    Just don’t disrespect him…

Raisins, I am glad to see you come around to my position… Of course you may not have realized it but while I like Evan Gattis, I don’t know that he could hold up under the grind of 162 games. That said, it is going to be up to BMac if he wants to go down as the greatest catcher in Atlanta history and one day see his number up on the ring of honor.

Evan is what he is, I think his average will improve the next couple of years but not if he becomes a full time catcher.

As for Huddy, I think he will be offered a John Smoltz type contract. One which be laden with incentives. Perhaps his response to this type of deal may hinge on who he sees being around him. I know some of the worse decisions I ever made involved money and not staying where I was happy.

I expect Gerald Laird to be traded if BMac stays. Then again, would it ultimately hinder Bethencourt’s development if he came up and sat on the bench?

For sure, BJ cannot have another year like this one. One has to hope he can turn it around. Otherwise he will be our version of the Mets’ Jason Bay. Dan Uggla may be back on the upward trend. While he did not like sitting on the bench, It did not affect his paycheck one bit. What did apparently happen is his eyesight may have finally adjusted to the surgery. Dan will never be confuse with a .300 hitter but he can be reasonably expected to put up Evan Gattis type numbers.

Remember too, Gil, Bethancourt spent last season at AA, and he’s just 21. A full year at AAA won’t hurt him. In fact, I think he could use it. And Laird only has 1 year left on his deal. The time works out pretty well, if you ask me. And I also won’t be surprised if the NL doesn’t adopt the DH before Bud-man retires. It’ll be his farewell gift to the NLBPA…

As I live in the Nats area. I only get the Nats’ feeds when the play the Braves. I do get all the Nats and the Orioles broadcast as part of my DirecTV package at no additional cost but I buy the MLB package each year. There are still games which are blacked out when they are part of the National feed.

I suspect you would get the sportssouth feeds as part of your DirectV package but Ber would know better since he has DirecTV and whould know which channels are part of the local package.

DISHnetwork, DirecTV, ATT… they’re all crooks. And you can no longer trust any of the programming to be suitable for family viewing, most belonging in the gutter. Even if you can find something decent, the commercials are even worse.

But I can’t do without access to the Braves games, so I may have to suck it up. At worst I’ll change providers into some promo package for a short period of time.

I HATE commercials too(those ATT u-verse with the kids, ugh, and so many repeats of said commercial) , so unless we are watching Turner Classic movies(no commercials !)Braves games, Fox News or say, History channel pickers or Pawn stars…most everything else is via DVD or DVR. Have you guys ever gotten a DVR with DISH? Highly recommend them! I DVR stuff like baseball tonight, Simpsons, and movies. It’s great to FF thru all the commercials, and of course you can watch whenever you want, and that hour you would have been stuck sitting thru, well you watched that hour long drama or baseball tonight in 42 minutes. I do it a lot for movies and TV shows I want to watch that come on at the same time as the Braves. And he is right, you can get really spoiled being able to skip commercials.

As for bypassing cable etc, If you have high speed internet, their are several services like HULU and Rabbit TV which will allow yo to watch shows and download movies.

We really don’t watch “shows”, per se. We like Turner Classic Movies and the kids like the cartoon channels. Other than that, if it doesn’t have a ball, a boiler, or a beard, we probably don’t have it on.

The pickers and Pawn Stars can be entertaining, but half the time we’re diving for the repote during the commercials. There’s more smut in those 30 seconds than anything we ever “choose” to watch. And you can’t choose the commercials. And that is their undoing in my house. YEs, you can block certain shows with certain ratings. That’s pretty easy. But the commercials…

Yesterday we watched the UGA game (go Dawgs!!) on Peachtree TV – the local channel that used to be TBS. At least half the commercials had some girls’ parts falling out of her clothing, or lack thereof. I don’t want my kids exposed (no pun intended… OK, it was completely intended) to that garbage.

Sadly, once you subscribe to MLB.TV, which subjects you to blackouts, and to also subscribe Hulu and to Netflix, etc., you are paying just as much as you would with DirecTV’s promo package.

All this would be a moot point if people conducted themselves with a certain degree of decency and self-control. Sadly, those two concepts have gone the way of common-sense and have almost completely disappeared. I’ll quit now before I get on my soapbox and start preaching…

Raisins, while we are on the subject of “Stuff”… The mantra of the advertisement industry is “Sex Sells”.. This is especially true when your target group is an age group whom appear perfectly willing to spend $2000 for a set of wheels for a car which is only worth $500. Commercials are designed to appeal to people who vote with their gonads and not their brains. It indeed can be exasperating. Like Ber says, it is great to be able to fast forward thru the commercials.

It’s has to be a tough time to raise kids because they are constantly being bombarded with propaganda encouraging precociousness to a group who a re already being bombarded by their own hormones. The best we can hope for is to instill a strong sense of self worth high moral values and be there to pick up the pieces when they fall and hope the damage is not too great as they negotiate the perils of growing up.

No one ever said being a parent is easy and actually can be both the most rewarding and the most frustrating experience of our lives. Good luck but I suspect you already have a good handle on it within your household. I know of a lot of things I would have done different but the biggest mistake we often make is believing others have the same value system as we do. It is hard to cheat a liar and a thief, It is the honest folks who are often taken in with the belief that others will instinctively do the right thing.

Okay, day game today, let’s get this thing done… Go Braves!

Looks like the sun is shining a little brighter this morning, at least for we Braves’ fans. Now is the question of for whom do we root for the final week? Of course we have to root for the Giants. It is the gNats vs the Cardinals that has me conflicted. The Cardinals need to take at least one but gNats need to hold the Cardinals in check while the Braves take care of business at home. Home field advantage is huge this year. Of course, as we look at the standings, it is only the Dodgers who really have a decent away record. The Braves ended up only one game under 500 in away games for the season.

Speaking of the Dodgers, They don’t look quite so unbeatable right now. They can be had…. The extra money they have to spend will not help them any more this season.

I watched the end of the second gNats/Marlins game… Won by the gNats after Coglin booted a ground ball to third in the ninth. I also watched the Cardinals try to come back on the Brewers… They made it interesting for sure.

Now the Braves need to win 5 of the last seven. That should do it to wrap up home field advantage. It makes little difference as to whom the Braves will play out of the Central me thinks… Everyone is tough. That said, the Braves have a lot of doubters.

Now the roster. Didn’t Woods look good coming out of the pen yesterday? I think Avilan has a bit of tired arm. It is not his velocity that is down but his location is all over the place. Freedie says he wants three lefties coming out of the pen. I know you can reset your roster after each series. You don’t really need 4 starters in a short series.

Minor, Medlen and Teheran will be the Braves starters with Medlen the game one starter.

Fredi on first, CJ on third, Simba at short, BMac behind the dish, JHey and JUp in the outfield. Now the questions creep in. Who starts at second? Elliot or Dano? Though one there, I think it depends on who hits this week. Gattis will get the nod in left. I hope the big rookie handles the pressure. Centerfield is between BJ and Jordan…. Neither has set the world on fire as of late. That one will be interesting. Maybe dependent on who the opposing starting pitcher is one would guess.

Question, does Fredi give Free a breather and play Terdoslavich at first for a game this week? It would also allow Joey to see some pitches, then again, it is tough to sit a guy when he is red hot like FF5 is right now.

JHey is blocking himself out at the plate right now. He is closing his stance just before he swings. Watch when he swings and you will see him step towards the plate with his right foot. This is causing him to pop up pitchers. I think it is a bit of a defensive move because of his jaw. Watch for pitcers to jam him a lot this week.

Simba is one strong little dude isn’t he? God blessed him with long tendons. He is going to be one big shortstop in another year or two…

FF surely will get one day off…surely!
Call me an old softie, but I would rather play anyone but the pirates. Just too cruel to end their season again…but then again, IF we had to lose to someone, rather it be them, than the Cards….Cards are just so tough. Reds have their strengths, but somehow don’t seem as threatening. Bet they are sorry Billy Hamilton isn’t available for the playoffs…it’s been awhile since we’ve seen a game changing base stealer, hasn’t it?
When you steal off on Yadi Molina, on a pitchout….you are good.

V, If Danno doesn’t hit this week, don’t you almost have to play Elliot? And to think, he was hitting like BJ, or Dan for most of the year in K.C.
And speaking of good basestealers…ummm, does he look like he’d be one? Don’t know if he wears baggy uni’s or what, but he looks like a somewhat skinny, out of shape dude, with no speed, but clearly he is the best baserunner on the team…JHey, then E.Johnson, FF, Chris Johnson, J Up, McCann, Gattis, Simba…I’d try that lineup for one game at least….

Hi, Ber… guess what? Hamilton IS eligible for their post-season roster. Anyone in the organization on Aug. 31 is eligible. 🙂

As for Danno vs. Elliot, there are still 7 games left in the regular season. I see it as an opportunity for Dan to either prove he is back, or not. 7 games. We’ll know next week.

Funny thing about base stealers, Speed , while a factor, does not always translate to success. Costanza is a good example of speed without success. Elliot Johnson is not that fast but he has great instincts plus a great success rate.

Nice win on Simba’s oppo to right last night. If only Dan would remember where right field was… That said, Simmons has really matured this season. He is perhaps the only Braves player who really benefited from his time in the WBC this spring. He has grown up before our very eyes this year.

Freddie Free hit number 106 this year, puts him in some pretty rare company as far as Braves’ first basemen go in the RBI department. McGriff only hit 107 in his best season. J-Hey has really taken to the center field job too. He has made some pretty plays in the outfield this week.

Yes Ber, stepping in the bucket but not throwing himself off stride as much as he is blocking himself out at the plate. Stepping into the ball is okay if you are hitting away but he does better when he puts his right foot straight down.

So, it’s Maholm’s turn tonight, fighting for a spot on the post season roster. This might be Paul’s last game in a Braves uniform tonight. Gee, we hardly knew you….

I’m still thinking and believe he will sign it. That’s my opinion of what is in store for Tim Hudson next season. An incentive laden contract which will pay dividends if he can perform up to his previously high standards. It won’t be 10 million dollars a year but certainly enough to keep him comfortable in his old age.

I’m pretty sure the Braves wish they had the money they are paying Boss Man back so they could give it to BMac but they don’t and don’t know that Brian might not excel at Yankee Stadium the next five or so years. With that short porch in left and all those small parks in the AL, he will hit 35 home runs a season without really trying. A lot more off speed stuff thrown in the AL too.

I was hoping to see Bethancourt play a game this season but I suspect the last game will be given to Gerald Laird.

Sounds like the Giants really would like to move Buster Posey to third base next season. I guess they have become Pandaed out.

I’ll bet David Ross is hoping the Braves can make it to the World Series against the Red Sox this year. I sure don’t think many folks had that match up on their pre-season predictions for the WS.

Funny how the baseball gods let things play out.

Even with their best mark in the NL, most pundits are discounting the Braves to make it deep into the play-offs. Can’t say that I blame them but we have seen this year’s edition of the Braves do some pretty remarkable things. If they can just get to good umpiring, I think they have as good a shot as any team. You just never know who is going to be the one to step up big in October…

Yup… amazing how opinions and ideas can change when one actually watches the team play a few baseball games. You cannot see “heart and desire” on the TV crawl, and “grit and determination” do not show up in the evening’s stat sheet. This edition of the Braves has a few unmeasurable qualities that will serve them well in October.

I feel for Beachy. Having been the recipient of some bad outcomes following surgery, I know he has to be worried that he might have to start from ground zero again.

Huddy signed to an incentive laden deal would be good on both ends. Especially since the Braves cannot afford to throw money at maybes. The Braves do need a veteran pitcher on the staff. They just cannot afford to take a lot of risk. I’m sure Huddy wants to stay but he like every other father, has to do what is right for his family.

Same is true for Brian. The kid would love to stay in Atlanta but he just might not be affordable give the restraints placed on the Braves by Liberty Media.

It takes me back to my original question of the last century (literally!): how many millions do you have to have to leave to your kids so they’ll be good-for-nothing and miserable?

A local man here some years back was a farmer and had become richer than rich through his slow acquisitions of parcels of land, yet he drove an old pickup truck, wore coveralls most of the time, lived in the small home his father had built and refused to give either of his sons any money. They had to work part-time jobs to buy school clothes in high school, had to put themselves through college and work to support themselves afterward. Sink or swim on their own – and they turned out to be honest, genuine leaders who knew the value of a dollar and appreciated what it took to earn one.

When he died, he stipulated in his Will that his grandchildren be raised the same way. He left relatively small sums to his children until they reached something like 55 and put the rest in trusts for the grandchildren. All of this family are outstanding people. There’s a good lesson in there for some.

It was a great game indeed. The kids had a great time. I particularly enjoyed hearing my daughter scream with each pitch that Craig Kimbrel delivered. We had fantastic seats. And to be sure, it was an amazing pitchers’ duel. Not exactly a super exciting game from an action standpoint… and it was over quite quickly.

We missed the 1st pitch (the whole 1st inning actually) because traffic just sucked through town. On a normal drive – whatever that is – it take us about an hour to get to downtown Atlanta from God’s country in NE Ga. We left at 5:30pm for a 7:30pm game, and still missed the 1st inning and a half. You can do that math. I won’t even speak of how long it took us to get out of Atlanta, but I am just now posting this at 12:45am. Again, you can do that math.

It’s no mystery why I forego making that trek more than about once a year… if that. Still, Turner Field is a place of wonder. I love it. If I only had a helicopter…

Raisins, when Josie and I went to Turner Field several years ago, we stayed in what used to be a Holiday Inn Express across the street. As I hear all the tales of the horrendous traffic getting in and out of the park, I realize that was a stroke of luck to have done that. How short sighted for the folks in Atlanta not to extend MARTA all the way to Turner Field and to downtown Atlanta and the Georgia Dome..

In looking back over my previous post, I neglected to mention that it was against the St Louis Cardinals which Greg Maddux had a similar performance.

Yes, it was a pretty quick game last night, that happens when you have two pitchers dealing. Cliff Lee was at his finest if you ask me. He sure looks like the guy the Phillies are paying for. It helped that Howard was out for the season.

I don’t think the Phillies will be in fourth place next season. Still, like the Braves learned the hard way, you have got to have a strong bullpen to go along with your starters.

Short-sighted? Well… not actually short-sighted. More like self-sighted. They knew all along what they were doing. Guess who makes a ton of money off the parking?

There was a time at the old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium that many of the homes around would let you park in their yards for a fee. There were “mom and pop” lots all around the place. Then during all the political wrangling that went along with getting Turner Field built, a handful of laws were passed that prevent the locals from getting in on the action. The city controls 100% of the parking around the Ted. Any and all attempts to get MARTA extended to the area have been rebuffed over and over.

So, the stars are beginning to align. Bucs take down the Reds on the strength of the long balls. Like I said, it is often a crap shoot.

So, only six out of thirty-three analyst on ESPN believe the Braves will take down the Dodgers. I hope the Braves front office is posting these comments on the bulletin board in the locker room.

A team cannot sustain itself on emotion for a 162 game season but it can certainly do so for a short run which is the play-offs.

Mark Boman reports that Uggla may be left off the post season roster. I have mixed emotions about that. Do you really need extra pitching more than position players given you have so many off days for travel?

    Gil, Uggla’s OBP….. .309
    BJ Upton’s OBP……..268

Why would BJ be on the team again? Oh right, his brother.
Jayson Stark explains how very bad BJ has been….

“It would make perfect baseball sense if B.J. Upton goes out there this October and hits like .700, with 12 homers, 18 steals and 25 Web Gems — because one of these days, or weeks, or centuries, a guy with this much talent has to do something productive. Right? But so far? Wow. One season into a five-year, $75.25 million contract, all the highest-paid player in Braves history has done is put himself in contention to become the biggest free-agent debacle of all time.

I don’t use words like “debacle” lightly, either. But boy, do they apply to a fellow who has (got the Advil handy?) … a .184 batting average, the second-lowest average in the entire sport among players with at least 400 plate appearances (beating out only his own teammate, that .181-hitting Dan Uggla) … a .289 slugging percentage, a lower percentage than — no kidding — Juan Pierre, Adeiny Hechavarria and Ben (Still Homerless in my 1,304-AB Career) Revere … gone 0 for the entire season (0-for-28, 18 strikeouts) with runners on third base … hit .157/.227/.222 against left-handed pitching … a mind-boggling .108 batting average (10-for-93, with 42 strikeouts) with runners in scoring position … gone an even more mind-boggling 4-for-54 (.074), with 27 strikeouts and no homers, with two outs and runners in scoring position … and has hit .106 so far in September, including 1 for his last 36, with 19 whiffs.”

Not sure I agree with adding Constanza. Isn’t that what BJ is there for? He’s certainly not there for his bat. And he hopefully isn’t starting. I mean, if your reasoning for excluding Uggla is his lack of offensive production, then you can’t have BJ.

Personally, I’d rather have Uggla than Constanza. But the decision indicates that Fredi anticipates manufacturing runs on the basepaths, not through the longball. But don’t you dance with the girl you came with? Is playoff time the time to try to change personalities?

I agree with the pitching decisions, but Constanza over Uggla puzzles me a little. 12th pitcher over Uggla I would have understood, but Constanza?

I seriously feel bad for Uggla, It’s not like the guy doesn’t give 100% every game, just that his 100% just isn’t good enough anymore. Freddie G has some serious gonads to be able to pull the plug on him. Let’s hope Uggs takes it in stride and comes back with something to prove.

I still say it has to do with his vision and perhaps over the winter he will be able to adjust to the changes.

Gil, I kinda hope we will hear Uggla was concerned about holding the team back…I don’t know, he can walk a ton, but perhaps he hasn’t scored much on his walks.
They have more money tied up with BJ going forward, guess they hope he gets a big hit or two, and that will help him next year.
Is he (BJ) going to be in there tonight against the best starter in the game? Amazing that he hit .157 against lefties this year. Hopefully, Reed Johnson is in CF tonight, but I bet BJ will still start…will be interesting to see….

I realize that hindsight is always 20/20, but I believe we did touch on this ahead of time…

For the record: Elliott Johnson went 0-4 with 3 K’s and 4 LOB. Was that a real big upgrade over Uggla? At least with Uggla, you have the chance of him going yard. I mean, with the abysmal season he had, he still hit 22 HR’s. He also had more BB’s than anyone on the team all season. I believe Johnson also had a pretty iffy play (ruled a hit, curiously) at 2B that eventually resulted in a run.

I didn’t like it before the games started; I don’t like it now. I really hope that EJohnson doesn’t continue to be a black hole in the lineup. That single decision could have long term effects…

Ernie Johnson Jr makes Chip seem like Vin Scully! I’ve told you all, I have no issues with Chip. He’s not his Dad, or Granddad, but that’s fine.
I think I heard something like the Braves have lost game one in the last 6 NLDS? is that right?
We had Clayton on the ropes a few times, but with him being a great pitcher(even with lesser stuff) and people like J Up swinging for a homer EVERY time they were up. We had no chance.
I really wouldn’t mind trading him to Texas if they made a better offer over the winter. I think there is a reason he never has lived up to his hype, just like his brother. Way too stubborn to adjust.
Have to keep Puig off base today. I hate how they have to hype(there is that word again) him to death(Bet TBS producers were constantly in the ears of the 3 guys during the game, “talk him up! Say how he is much see tv!” ) but as we saw with the first run in the game, there was no stopping him. Couldn’t figure why JHey didn’t throw to 3rd. I knew he was fast(terrible base stealer though) but he is clearly much faster than most players.
Too Bad McCann’s ball didn’t go out when he hit it to left. Might have made a game of it…
Can’t win many games with 1 run and 5 hits.

Well, if the home plate umpire had a consistent strike zone, No walk would have been issued to begin with. I prayed that the umpires would not be the deciding factors in last night’s game. Why did he leave Teheren out there when He kept giving up hits? At one point, someone said(Ron Darling?) that he was trying to get one more out because he was up 2nd in the next inning, and didn’t want to burn a pitcher. Really? Braves lose today, and the season is over, and he doesn’t want to burn a pitcher? Then Wood started to get batted around, and he kept him in there. Sigh….

I don’t really have too many issues with the pitching decisions, but I will continue to question the decision to leave Uggla off this roster. I didn’t like it before game 1, so I feel I have a right to complain. Elliott Johnson hasn’t given us squat. He’s struck out with runners on; he’s hit into DP’s… he’s been awful. And BJ… man, he is just on another planet.

I was about to make a suggestion for the next round’s roster, but I’ll just shut up now. Not giving up on them, but not feeling very good. Yeah, they’ll probably rise up tonight and battle against Nolasco, and maybe bring this thing back home. Then they get to face Kershaw again… and that’s best case scenario.

Don’t forget, Elliot Johnson hit .277 in Sept (18 hits) Uggla hit .122 (6 hits) Elliot stole 7 bases in Sept, Uggla 2 all year long.
Still don’t get why we have 7 outfielders though….
Another F.G. move that urked me was after Elliot walked, he immediately bunted him over to 2nd. Hey, he was 22 for 24 stealing this year. Why not let him steal?
But, if we lose the series, it won’t be because of Uggla not playing, it will be because Medlen gave up 5 runs in 4 innings, Teheran gave up 6 runs in 2 2/3rds, and several bullpen arms were not very good.
I also wonder about pitch selection and well, why are they pitching to Ramirez and Piug?

And since we are complaining today, I have another gripe.. and it rests at the feet of Fredi Gonzalez.

Why on God’s green earth did Fredi play the spring lineups over the last week of the regular season when we were battling for the NL’s best record? You do realize that just 1 more win – just 1 – and we’d be playing the Pirates this series, right? Yes, I know that we would have to face LA/StL in Round 2, but at least Round 2 might have been a reality. Instead, we are pitching a guy whom we claimed off the scrap heap just 4 weeks ago against 13-win Ricky Nolasco for our post-season life. My optimism is not real high today.

    Like

  184. 194 Voice of Raisins October 7, 2013 at 1:16 pm

As for Elliot Johnson, he’s another guy we took off the scrap heap after every other MLB team passed on him. He batted .277 in Sept. against the scrubs of the NL after the rosters had expanded and the races were mostly decided. Prior to his release by KC, he batted .179 – exactly the same as Dan Uggla. The difference is that Dan still had a .309 OBP. EJ’s OBP in KC was a paltry .218. Heck… BJ Upton had a higher OBP than that.

If it sounds like I’m mad it’s because I am. The Braves battled through so many adversities throughout the season – some self-inflicted – to still emerge as the class of the senior circuit. Yet we p!$$ed it away in the final 2 weeks and are wetting the bed once again in the NLDS.

We should have had the best record in the NL going into post-season, and we should have taken our whole team into battle. Instead, we left one guy off the roster in favor of some derp who managed to slap the ball around against a bunch of youngsters auditioning for 2014. Heck, I’d rather have seen Paul Janish… if he hadn’t broken his own face in the weight room. (Y’all heard about that, right?)

So, if you are gonna play Gattis in LF – a call I agreed with and has paid off – why carry BJ on the roster? He’s come to the plate 3 times and struck out each time. I was told he was there for pinch running. Well, then what is Constanza there for? Did they carry BJ for late inning defense? Schafer is a better defender… probably the best defender on the team. There is just no acceptable excuse for leaving Dan off and keeping BJ on. That decision has reaped a combined 0-13 with 7 K’s and 8 LOB between BJ and EJ. That is pathetic.

I said it last week, and I’ll say it again. You go with the team that got you where you are. Fredi and Frank tried to get cute and it’s blowing up in their faces.

And tonight, you get Freddy Garcia, another scrap heap guy who was out of work just 5 weeks ago. Don’t you need to being Medlen back on short rest? He only went 4 innings with 75 pitched 4 days ago. It’s do or die, for goodness sake. Who is a better option to keep your playoff chances alive – Kris Medlen on 4 days rest, or Freddy Garcia? If you deemed Meds your #1 guy – evidenced by starting him in Game 1 of the NLDS – then you have to pitch him tonight. Then you get Minor against Kershaw in the deciding Game 5, if the good Lord graces us with another day to fight.

Yes… I’m mad. Fight your best fight with your best warriors. Don’t ask scrubs to step up. Ridiculous. 😡

OK… I feel a little better now. Maybe if Freddy can give us 4 innings, Meds can piggyback the start. I do feel like we ought to be able to beat Nolasco. (But I just knew we’d beat Ryu, too.)

The key to the game is to get some runs for Garcia early. Well, early in the game anyway. With a 9:30pm EST start, there won’t be anything done early. By the way, am I the only one who sees that as a bit of a left-handed slap in the face to Braves fans to give us a 9:30pm start? Typical national disrespect. My eyes were closing last night at 10pm. But if you are the Braves hitters, would you rather see him on 3 days rest – for the first time in his career – or on 5 days rest in a deciding Game 5? Elliot and Canstanza manned up. Chris Johnson manned up. McCann hit some balls hard in previous games, but ultimately, no hits in 4 games. Had a couple of bad calls no doubt. 2 strike 3’s were not strikes. Only 1 homer in 4 games. Bullpen needed Eric O’Flaherty and Jonny Venters.
Think Ramiro Pena and the Pastor found it really hard to watch the playoffs?

A remarkable 119 of Rivera’s saves lasted more than one inning. Since 1996, the long-since retired Keith Foulke is second with 55 such saves. Rivera has an additional 31 multi-inning saves in the postseason alone over that span, 14 of which required him to record at least six outs. Both of those are postseason records. Goose Gossage is second in both categories with seven multi-inning postseason saves, six of which lasted at least six outs.

No need to rehash all my rants regarding Uggla, BJ, etc., but with the season on the line, and the middle of LA’s lineup coming to the plate, Fredi sends up a young and unseasoned rookie to get through the inning. Puig, Uribe and Shumacker… Games are not always won nor lost in the 9th. I’d have much rather had my best take on their best. Fredi said he had Kimbrel “lined up to get the last 4 outs”. Well, that’s nice. He was only 2 outs short of that. And the best closer in MLB could only watch the season unravel from beyond the fence.

    Let the speculation begin…

Mac is likely gone; maybe Huddy too. Maholm is definitely gone. No one will take Uggla, although he is probably ready to go elsewhere. Can’t blame him, either. BJ… well, I just hope he wakes up sometime between now and February. Ramiro Pena is coming off a major surgery and has no contract. Wonder if frank will try to bring him back, or will they just go back to Elliot Johnson, whom apparently Fredi as some odd crush on.

Realistically, the only major changes I can foresee are simply losing Mac, Maholm and Huddy. There is maybe a remote chance they might go after a veteran pitcher due the uncertainty surrounding Beachy. But don’t expect Terry McGuirk to land a top FA like Ervin Santana or Matt Garza. More likely a pitcher such as Scott Kazmir or Ubaldo Jimenez or last night’s almost starter Ricky Nolasco. For my money, I’d rather just bring Huddy back…

At one point he turned to the bullpen coach and said, “I’m mad because …” I’m not exactly sure what he said after that, although one person on Twitter surmised it was “I’m mad because I told him if we have the lead in the eighth, I want the ball.” We’ll see if Kimbrel confirms that, but even if he didn’t say that, his look of disgust, standing there with his hands on his hips, will haunt Braves fans all winter.

BJ Upton, 5 years, 72.5 million. One year down, 4 to go.
Yasiel Puig, 7 years, 42 Million. (Born in 1990) I know, horrible, horrible, hotdog, but like a Manny Ramirez, someone that just flat out hits all the time. Someone teams fear being up with runners on base.
B.A. was about 137 points higher than BJ’s. Unlike Manny, he runs out every ball, smashes into walls all the time, plays like his hair is on fire.
2 things I never heard about him before, that probably explain at least party why he plays the way he does.
    From wiki
Puig enjoyed a breakout season in the 2009-10 Cuban National Series, with a .330 batting average, 17 home runs, 47 runs batted in (RBIs) and 78 runs scored in 327 at-bats.[1][2] Puig also played for the Cuban national team in the 2011 World Port Tournament where he tried to defect along with teammate Gerardo Concepcion. Concepcion was successful while Puig was not and was disciplined by not being allowed to play during the 2011–12 seasons.

On August 13, 2012, the Dodgers promoted Puig to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the Class A-Advanced California League.[5] He played in 14 games with the Quakes and hit .327. After the Quakes season, he was scheduled to join the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League, but a staph infection in his right elbow required surgery and sidelined him for several months. After the infection healed, he opted to play winter ball in Puerto Rico to keep his development on schedule.[6]
for a hot dog, he has at a very young age, had baseball taken away from him a couple of times…Still gonna root for the Cards to beat the Dodgers 😕

Agreed that BJ isn’t going anywhere, but disagree that he will hit sub-.200 for the duration of his contract. It was maybe the worst season ever by a professional athlete, but I still don’t think you can judge a guy with 8 years in the bigs by 1 season.

My money says he bounces back in 2014.

As for Uggla, well… he possess all the intangible qualities just mentioned above for Puig. Nobody plays harder or works harder on the Braves team. And I know that the guy is one of the real clubhouse leaders. (I cannot help but think his exclusion from the playoff roster had ramifications beyond Dan personally, although no one will say it publicly.) But if you pick up $18MM or so of the $26MM remaining, you might could move him on… especially if he’s a part of another deal where he isn’t the centerpiece but an attractive prospect is.

Still, Dan Uggla is not the problem with this team. BJ is not the problem with the team. Can I remind you that they did win 96 games in 2013? If Uggla is moved, it will be solely because there is a rift between him and Fredi that cannot be repaired. If that’s the case, Dan is not responsible.

The Braves deficiencies in the NLDS can be summed up pretty easily. The table-setters didn’t set anything, only 3 guys really got on base consistently, the starting pitching stalled, and the manager made some pretty poor in-game decisions. (Notice I didn’t bring up the bone-headed roster decisions? Although I do believe it had a major effect.)

Freeman, Gattis and CJohnson batted .370 between them, but the rest of the team batted .129, including a putrid 1-14 for Elliot Johnson w/ 4 K’s and 12 LOB. Man, do y’all see that 12 men LOB in 4 games? That is beyond awful. Brian McCann… a grizzly 0-13 w/ 6 K’s, including a “golden sombrero” in the decisive final game.

We do not have that “ace” that other teams want to avoid. We all freaked out over having to face Kershaw twice. The Cards are banking on taking their series because they are tossing Wainright at the Pirates in their decisive game 5. Who is our stud? Who’s our “go to” guy? Who’s our stopper? We don’t have one. That’s a problem, especially in the playoffs.

    And Fredi… man oh man…

I wonder if he was wearing Depends under his uniform? He certainly wet the bed in this series. With their backs against the wall, and with the team struggling to score runs, and with the Dodgers pulling a last minute fast one and tossing Kershaw against us in Game 4, Fredi stayed with the exact same anemic lineup again, including starting my new enemy Eliot Johnson, who was 0-8 w/ 4 K’s and 8 LOB prior to the all important do-or-die game. (Yes, he did actually get a hit in Game 4, but even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then…) Need I remind anyone of the dictionary definition of “insanity”. And why did BJ come to bat at all, much less as a PH in crucial late game situations? He came to the plate 3 times; he struck out 3 times. Again… that definition of the word “insanity” comes to mind. You ask, “Who else should he have batted?” How about Dan Uggla, who hit 22 HR’s in the regular season and led the team in walks? For all of the vilification of Danny, we forget that he still had an OBP of .309, higher than Andrelton Simmons (.296), Evan Gattis (.291) and BJ (.268). No wait… couldn’t bat Danny. He was left off the roster!!!

And for all the bad memories I will carry with me until next February, there is one visual that continues to haunt me: a fully warmed up Craig Kimbrel, staring through the bullpen fence with his hands on his hips as the game slipped away. Just stoopid. Not stupid, but stoopid. Once Puig hits that double, I call on my door slammer. I need strikeouts. I need certainty. I need Kimbrel. But no… Fredi was dead set on a “4 out save”.

Let me ask you. With the entire season on the line, who do you want with the ball in his hands? Carpenter or Kimbrel? Fredi bet on Carpenter. Kimbrel stood and watched. The team is cleaning out their lockers this morning…

Just for grins and giggles, I am going to post a little comparison between 2 players, with the “better” stat in bold print. I’ll let you all guess who the 2 players are…

    …….: Player 1, Player 2

    AVG: .243, .179
    OBP: .291, .309
    SLG: ..480, 362
    HR’s: 21, 22
    RBI’s: 65, 55
    K’s: 81, 171
    BB’s: 21, 77

And here’s a pretty cool stat: Total Bases, it is computed by the following formula –> Singles + Doubles (x2) + Triples (x3) + HR’s (x4)

    TB: 170, 162

No defensive stats were used because neither is considered to be a very good fielder.

Player 1 is touted as a candidate for ROY and a foundational player. Player 2 was left off the NLDS roster. Was there really a great disparity?

Bowman tweets that the Braves will work to move Uggla in the offseason. I sense much discord in the clubhouse. Very sad. That has always been a constant… since the days of Glavine, Smoltz and Justice, through the years of Huddy and Chipper. The real constant of course was Bobby Cox, who recognized how important team unity was to team success.

    Stomped down in an instant.

I said it last week and I stand by it. The singular decision to leave Dan off the playoff roster will have ramifications beyond the 2013 NLDS.

I just thought leaving Uggla off the roster would create bad Karma. It is tough when you mess with the team chemistry.

As for the future, Dan will harbor deep resentment for a long time. He is a pro, he won’t vent in public but I’m sure he will seethe for a long time.

I just don;t think he had enough time to adjust to the surgery. His real mistake was not adjusting to the outside pitch. If you don’t keep a pitcher honest, he will eat your lunch every time.

BJ? Well, we will have to see if he becomes the Braves’ version of Jason Bay.

You are right Raisins, No front line, shut down pitcher in the Braves stable. They have some very good arms but to win short series, You really need two studs who can be relied upon to hold the opposition to one run.

You either have to be able to throw 95+ or have pin point control where as the other side can’t get good wood on the ball.

BMac reveal his mistake when he said he never got the pitch he thought he would get. Well, there in lies his weakness, you have to be able to see the ball and hit the ball, not try to out think the other side and swing where you think the ball will be thrown.

I think the real problem is we as fans got spoiled into thinking this team was better than it really was. Just too many holes and I don’t know if the Braves have to where with all to patch the dam. There is a reason the Yankees have won 27 World Series. Money equals options…..

The Braves don’t have the resources so they have a much smaller margin for error.

Washington is going to come out with both barrels blazing next year. I don’t see Elliot being a long term fixture. The Braves will have a better outfield next year if only because Gattis will be behind the dish and not in left field but to be honest, he is no worse in the outfield than Holliday. He was not the problem, he got in some pretty good knocks against some very good pitchers.

And yes. you have to have your table setters getting on base ahead of your boppers. It is really tough to win ball games when you begin every rally with two outs.

If I had my “druthers”, I’d rather bring the whole group of position players back next season, not just Mac (unrealistic) but Uggla & BJ as well. It was a good group, and very talented offensively. Well, everyone but Elliot Johnson. Send him packing and welcome Tyler Pastornicky back from the DL. I would love to see how the dynamic would change with JHey not missing extensive periods, and with him leading off for an entire season.

I’d make some changes to the pitching. As for my bullpen, I know Venters will be returning. With EOF being a FA, and with the Braves track record with FA relievers, I don’t expect to see him wear the tomahawk any more. Avilan is the new EOF anyway. If Jonny comes back close to old form, we’ll be pretty solid once again in the late innings. Kimbrel, Avilan, Walden, Carpenter, Venters, with a couple of veteran types (plus a healthy Cristhian Martinez) battling for the 2 long relief spots.

As for the starters, obviously Minor, Medlen and Teheran is a nice start. Alex Wood proved his abilities. There is complete uncertainty with Beachy, and Huddy is a long shot possibility. But still, no ace. No real #1.

So I’d take my Mac money and go hard in a bid to trade for the Rays’ David Price. We have the pieces to get it done, and the money to make sure he stays a while. There are not alot of true #1 starters available. Price definitely fills the bill. It’d probably take a package of a major league ready young pitcher like Alex Wood, a good young position prospect like Bethancourt (catching is not a strength of the Rays), and another good prospect from the minors… maybe a Cody Martin or J. R. Graham or Sean Gilmartin.

Would you do it? Would you do it with Gattis instead of Bethancourt? Which of those two will be better for the Braves?

    Talk amongst yourselves…

Raisins, I think I would rather keep Gattis , who has proven he can hit major league pitching and trade Bethencourt who hasn’t. I don’t think the difference in defense is that great and if you are going to keep BJ and Uggla (I don’t think the Braves have an option of not at this point) you better have someone who can make contact.

And remember, the Mets waited a long time for Jason Bay to break out of his slump.

Pena takes the place of Janish and ET Jonhson on the roster. Reed is another year older and a guy who cannot play everyday. Great guy but time to move on for the Braves.

The hard truth is not finishing at the bottom year after year tend to make you very late in the drafts and thus, the talent pool a little shallow. Maybe a decent mid round pick for BMac but that is all.

The Braves better hope they can scout players the Dodgers don’t know about because they will never be able to out spend them in our life time.

V, I’d be all for trading for David Price! I think I even mentioned that last year. (Or was it early this year, when he was not very good, and the rays looked like a team headed for last place?)
    interesting article on the topic
    http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on-baseball/24025479/was-that-david-prices-last-start-as-a-tampa-bay-ray
They bring up a good point, rays got Wil Myers for James Sheilds, and while very good, David Price is better, a true #1.
So, would V’s deal of Alex Wood, Gattis(gulp! he may turn into a 30/90 guy) and someone like Sean Gilmartin, get him? Seems possible.
Someone in the comments mentioned the Cards and Cubs might be interested…hmm, you know who else might be? the Nats….Don’t know how strong their farm system is.But, IF they got him and IF he stayed healthy all year?
We would be where we thought we would be this year, scrambling for a W.C. position.

Ok, lets try again…this is interesting! I had read in comments on a few places on the web last few days about a new MLB contract that would give every team 20 Mil more a year, next year…whaa??? Thought it was likely B.S. but dug around. Couldn’t find a recent stories, but found a few talking about this in 2012…here is one of them…funny, talking about David Price too!

But here’s the thing. Every team in baseball has seen its valuation soar over the past few years. Profits are streaming into owners’ pockets, led by a new wave of exploding TV rights deals, both national and local. The latest round of national TV contracts from ESPN, Fox, and TBS is expected to yield $1.55 billion a year for baseball’s 30 clubs starting in 2014, more than doubling the previous payments and amounting to an increase of more than $25 million per team. That’s the absolute low end of the estimated gains.
    http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/38127/who-says-mlb-teams-cant-keep-their-stars

Ok, good news for…well, most teams it would seem! Rays might get to keep Price, after all(good for them, not so good for teams like the Braves needing a #1) But, it would be good news for the Brave too, in that, well, they could sign McCann, if they wanted to.

I would pay EOF whatever the market will bare(bear?Bayer?) he can get lefties and righties and was basically the best reliever in the game, not named Kimbrel. We don’t know if Venters will ever be as good as he once was.
We don’t know who will be next bitten by the curse of Tommy John either. What if that happened to Kimbrel? or Avilan? We were so lucky that we got Walden, that Carpenter blossomed, Avilan, etc, etc, etc…Again, imagine the Nats with EOF. JHey, F.F. would be rendered moot in games against the Nats.

Frank Wren never has – John Schuerholz never did – pay FA market value for a reliever… especially one coming off major surgery. It just won’t happen.

Venters is a different story since he is under team control. Now, that said, if his arb number is too high, he’ll be gone too. It’s just the way this team has operated for 23 years.

    Good points Ber…

First your pain, could be an ulcer. Been ODing on the aspirin again?

So many things, you have ruled out the gall bladder. Do anti acids help?

The Nats are loaded with position players in the minors. They had to rebuild their minor league system after MLB gutted them during their brief ownership. Thing is, the Nats team that had an impressive run in September is the team everyone expected in April. They have an owner who will spend whatever is necessary to win long term. One reason they played hardball with LaRoach.

I doubt they will be interested in McCann. I doubt McCann will sign with a National league team either. Just not a good fit.

The Braves have been trying to get by on the cheap for some time now. No, they are not the lowest paid but back when they won the WS, they were the highest.

The Braves pitching situation is a bit problematic. Their is room for improvement for sure. Teheran is a high ceiling. He is still a baby though.

Raisins, I think I would rather keep Gattis

Gattis(gulp! he may turn into a 30/90 guy)

I love Evan Gattis. He is the kind of guy I can get behind. He’s humble; he’s a hard worker; he’s clutch; he’s no frills – just grip it and rip it. But go back and look at some of his numbers from this year. He had a sub-.300 OBP (.291). That’s not something to build around. He’s worked very hard to be a decent catcher, but the catching position effects every pitcher on the team. (That has been one of Mac’s greatest strengths.)

Do I believe Gattis can be a good ML player? Absolutely. Do I think he’ll be a great one? No… I honestly don’t. But he’s coming off a pretty high profile year. He has alot of luster and value right now. I believe we could cash in on it better by bringing back something this team needs more.

One more thought on this. Christian Bethancourt has been a top MLB prospect for a while now for a reason. What happens if he comes into Spring Training next February and simply wins the catching job outright? What are we left with? A part time player who is a defensive liability in the OF and is no longer the “in the moment” feel good story of the season? The national press won’t talk up his story next season the way they did this season. His value may never be higher.

Yes… I realize that. But he’s being paid a buttload of cash. He can’t be a bench player. The platoon is more of an opportunity for Schafer than it is a benefit for BJ. Heck, if it worked out the way I want to see it, BJ returns to the player he was for 8 years in Tampa. Then the thought of a platoon would be silly.

Something else on Gattis. This is from a recent article by Braves writer Mark Bowman:

The Braves expressed their willingness to live with Gattis’ defense behind the plate and in the outfield for the chance to bolster the offense by giving him three to four plate appearances per game. He finished his first Major League season with a .243 average, 21 home runs and 65 RBIs in 105 games, nearly half of which he spent in left field.

[Fredi] Gonzalez said. “Obviously, his bat is what’s going to carry him. Shoot, I feel pretty good about him playing left field. He got better and better, or maybe we just got more comfortable watching him. He wasn’t a train wreck. I could mention five or six [former players] off the top of your head that you cringe every time the ball went out there.”

So what Fredi is saying is this: We’re alright playing him in LF because he puts up pedestrian numbers (by OF standards) and he isn’t the worst that’s ever played.

Why do I say pedestrian? LF is a prime offensive position. Yet Gattis had a low AVG, a low contact rate, and a poor BB/K ratio (the result of a low BB rate and a high K rate). These are all areas that a prime offensive player must excel in. He had a lower OBP and fewer HR’s than Dan Uggla this season, yet we are all ready to run Dan out on a rail… Fredi especially. What we love about Gattis is that he can hit the ball a ton. He’s a threat to leave the yard every time he comes to the plate, even though his plate discipline is lacking as evidenced by the low BB/K ratio, the low contact rate, and the low OBP. But wait! Can’t the same be said about the now villainous Dan Uggla? His putrid batting AVG aside, he can still hit the ball a ton, he’s still a threat to leave the yard every time he comes to the plate… and his plate discipline is actually better as evidenced by leading the entire team in walks.

Now… don’t get me wrong. I do not dislike Evan Gattis. But the reality of Evan Gattis and the legend of Evan Gattis don’t line up exactly. And while he still holds somewhat mythical status, his trade value is pretty high. If you went to catching starved Tampa and asked what it would take to get David Price, you’ll hear Evan Gattis name mentioned before anything else. He would be the centerpiece of the deal, not the young pitching.

I’ll put it this way -> 2014 NLDS… would you rather have David Price pitching to Christian Bethancourt in games 1 and 5, or Ubaldo Jimenez pitching to Evan Gattis?

I think we forget(to an extent) how truly bad Uggla was, especially the 2nd half. He hit .200 the first half, (and yes the all star break is no where near the middle of the season) 18 HR’s and 42 RBI’s.
    2nd half? 143 AB’s , 19 hits. 6 extra base hits. .133 average.
Even with 22 HR’s, and walking 77 times, he only scored 60 Runs. 38 without him hitting a homer.
I feel terrible, let me take it out on more braves players.
    J Up, 27 HR’s 70 RBI’s in 558 AB’s
    Gattis, 21 HR’s 65 RBI’s in 353 AB’s
Gattis drove in more runs than…Simmons, McCann, BJ, and JHey….as a part time player, who was also on the DL.

Not saying that Gattis is untouchable if offered the right pice in return but one should remember he is/was a rookie and rookie numbers often are the worse of their careers because there are always the steep learning curve.

If BJ had performed up to his expectations, we would not even have this conversation.

One should remember that Greg Maddux was acquired via free agency when the Braves were willing to lay out big bucks for a number one. They already had Tom Glavin who was drafted by the Braves and John Smoltz via trade. The real secret to the Braves success was above average 4 and 5 starters and a willingness to fill weaknesses with trading from strengths.

As far as Bethencourt vs Laird vs Gattis. One needs to determine where your offense is coming from. Gattis is a middle of the line up bat, Laird is no wimp with the lumber either. Bethencourt may yet develop into an All-star caliber back stop but until he is tested, we won’t know. He certainly has the potential.

The Braves have a great core of players to build around. The only two real holes in the Braves’ line up are at second base (Uggla) and center field (BJ). I saw glimmers of breakthrough with BJ. Dan has to reevaluate his entire approach to hitting. Truth is, he will have to prove himself next spring. BJ and the Braves are stuck with each other, the Braves, unlike the Dodgers, cannot afford to eat his contract and he has no trade value. Dan has zero trade value too. No team will spend 13 million for a guy who was not even on the playoff roster in deference to a late season waiver pick up from the Royals.

Dan needs to understand their are other guys on the roster who are capable of hitting home runs. he needs to sacrifice a few home runs for some situational hitting. Driving the ball to right. Staying on the ball rather than trying to pull everything. Didn’t he learn anything from watching Andruw Jones? Of course, the real question is he able to see?

My guess is that they will eat over half of Dan’s contract and trade him this offseason. I get a sense that the relationship between Dan and Fredi has been irreparably damaged. In all likelihood, 2B will be manned by Pastor next season. He is supposed to be 100% by Spring.

The other possibility is Ramiro Pena, who is actually arb eligible and under team control. He’ll certainly be a part of next year’s team as well. Pena/Pastor = cheap contract, so they could eat $20M of the remaining $26M and still be ahead in salary.

Pena is likely to play winter ball to regain strength and timing. He’s also a switch hitter, and given that the current lineup is quite RH heavy, that’s a plus. Pastor is also a RH.

Both will be on the roster, which gives Fredi alot of flexibility.

Yes Raisins, there is that. The results of owners’ collusion, players always getting someone else’s money. Often you do have to look at that way though. You are paying the same amount, you just are giving it to someone else.

I suspect the Braves would have to eat a lot of Uggla’s contract to even get a nibble.

Yes, but if you could get someone to take him and pay $9M of the $13M annually for the remaining 2 years on his deal, someone would get a power guy for $4M per season. Some team with cash who is losing a power hitting 2B, like the Yankees, might be interested.

Problem is, Fredi has put Frank over a barrel. There will not be a content clubhouse anymore if Dan remains. Bridges have been burned.

I’m sorry I take this place for granted, assuming y’all’ll be here when I choose to contribute, but I is who I is.

I actually meant to comment on the last blog about Mac. 16 hits kinda close to home, for me. ‘Fraid at this point, he’s gone, but I can’t say it ain’t for the best. I can say it sucks, if only because of my limited vocabulary.

Just wanted to plead my annual case for you good folks to return. Gil, you’re still read over there, brother, by at least one. We had a good conversation about y’all tonight, and thought I’d mention that you’re still very much missed, even some six years later.

Finally, let me say that I once told y’all this place wouldn’t last. Clearly, I was wrong. Well done. And, all the best for you and yours.

Hi again, BAS. Kind words over there on the ajc site. Speaking only for myself, I used to go back and read (if not contribute) quite a bit.

    Then they changed format…

They really made it difficult to do anything!! I get it; I understand the need to have some accountability. Way too many “hit and runs”. That reality, in fact, was one of the biggest reasons I left to begin with.

But I think they swung the pendulum quite a bit too far in the other direction. It’s just not very user friendly anymore. It would appear that possibly another format change is in the air? I hope so. Many good folks there that deserve better.

And of course, y’all are always welcome here in the ol’ B&S. 🙂

Of course, there are always exceptions, perhaps the most glaring is Francouer. Alas, if only that one could have turned out a little different. Perhaps that is why we should accept the fact that Dan’s playing days in Atlanta are over. Pretty big riff occurred if you asked me.

Who wouldn’t want that job now? All the hard work is behind them, the gNats are poised to dominate for quite a while. All they need is someone who can tweak the levers once in a while.

I think the Nats will hire a younger guy with a different dynamic than the old guard type. The classic “take the team to the next level” kinda guy. I’m about ready for one of those around here.

The riff between the team and Dan should have never happened. That could have been handled in a much better manner. Cohesive teams never throw one of their own under the bus. Never. Hanley all over again indeed…

As for the Chipper incident… again, proper leadership would have prevented that from occurring. Bobby would have never allowed that to happen.

No way the Braves let him languish on the bench. He needs to get his at bats and will be ready for a mid season call up if the need arises.

Gil, normally I would be for the team that beats the braves(what are we, 0-6 in the last first rounds?) but the Dodgers are what the Yankees used to be. A bottomless wallet. The Cards have to work within a budget. And man, do the Cards ever have some arms! Even though they too have been a bit hamstrung being good for so long, they have really found some gems deep in the draft.
They got Michael Wacha as a compensation pick for losing Phat Albert. 2 post season games, 14 innings, 1 run. Hopefully we get someone like that for losing McCann.
Was reading Red Sox forum last night, they were losing their minds with their manager. Don’t blame them. He kept Bucholse (SP) out there and he kept giving up runs. I and most of the fans gave up when it was 5-1, and the Tigers best starter(this year) out there. Imagine my surprise to see Big Papi had hit a Grand slam to tie it up in the 8th, and Salty had the game winning hit in the 9th!

Braves news is coming along at about a snail’s pace rigt now, and will likely continue to do so through the completion of the World Series. That said, there are a couple of items to note this morning:

#1- The Braves have reassigned 3B coach Brian Snitker to manage the AAA Gwinnett club. Snitker has a long history of managing in the Brvaes farm system. Braves roving instructor Doug Dascenzo will be the new 3B dude next season. No word yet on what happened to former Gwinnett manager Randy Ready.

#2- Apparently, Frank has gone public saying that he is interested in bringing back Huddy. Both DOB and Bowman have tweeted it. (If it’s on the internet, it has to be true, right? 😉 ) Huddy is on track to being 100% by about mid-November, giving Frank and Co. plenty of time to assess what he has going forward. As for me, well… you all know I want a proven ace. Short of David Price or Max Scherzer, I’d as soon have Huddy back as any other veteran. That said, my initial thought is that Frank is letting other teams know he is NOT desperate for a veteran starter, and that he will not bend over during any trade talks this winter. Good stance to take…

Well, that is a foregone conclusion. I don’t think there is anyone who has ever paid attention to anything beyond OPS, WAR and BABIP that doesn’t recognize the Mac situation for what it is. Heck, Mac realizes it is what it is. And he even knows he’s better off in the AL. His career will be years longer by adding the DH to his resume. In fact, his HOF resume will improve by adding DH to his repertoire.

And this is not meant as a dig to Mac – I love the guy – but just look at his numbers month by month this year… his AVG dropped from .337 in July to .238 in August to a Francoeurian .170 in September/October, including 0-16 in the NLDS. HR’s went from 6 to 4 to 1. And he had the month of April off!!

It’s best for him… and for the Braves. That 5 years, $60M can be used to extend David Price. 😀

    Wish I could edit that paragraph…oh well…
here is my crazy idea of the day (So far) the White Sox have an under performing 2nd baseman that has never lived up to his potential. Gordon Beckham . Born in the ATL, turned 27. 5 seasons in the majors. …from MLBTR…
Beckham had surgery to repair a broken hamate bone in April, returning to the Majors on June 3rd and hitting .305/.341/.419 in 180 plate appearances through July. Talk of a breakout season was quieted when the 27-year-old went on to hit .227/.304/.335 thereafter. Though a trade is possible for the disappointing second baseman, there’s a good chance the Sox stick with him for 2014. Beckham may be pushed by Leury Garcia and Marcus Semien next year, but could also become more important if shortstop Alexei Ramirez is dealt.
Ok, he’s younger, and while they whine about his .227 BA for the last two months, we would love it, wouldn’t we? 😕 Only 5 HR and 24 RBI’s in 400+ AB’s. So fine, you bat him 8th. If he hits around .249, his career BA. that would be light years ahead of Uggla.
But, would they want another homer happy .200 hitter that walks a ton, like Adam Dunn, does for them? Might we have to sweeten the pot with a pitcher , Uggla, and 20 Mil?
I don’t know…just my CIOTD. (Crazy Idea of the day)

But, with the the news that basically all teams are getting a wonderful little gift of 25 Mil+ very soon…they better not act like they just couldn’t afford him…

Yes, but… they need to prioritize. There will be money to spend, but there will be much to potentially spend it on. I’m not sure a mid-30’s catcher with declining numbers is the right place for it. And that really is not meant to be disrespectful to Mac, but the numbers speak for themselves. Over his career, his offensive numbers have dropped in September and October. This year’s numbers were no different, and he had the benefit of starting a month late.

It may seem nutty, but I am more concerned with losing a LH bat as much as losing Mac himself. We have suddenly become very RH heavy… crazy when it was the exact opposite just 2 years ago. Only JHey and Freddie bat LH among the projected starters. And only Schafer and possibly Constanza on the bench. Likely bench candidate Joey Terdo is a switch-hitter, giving him and his rookie level contract a leg up on RH Reed Johnson and the $1.6M option. Leg up may be the appropriate phrase, too, given RJ’s problematic Achilles tendon.

That’s a problem. It’s also maybe one reason they might try to move Dan (eating between $18M-$20M of that $25M windfall to make it happen). They need another LH in the lineup. God help us if it’s Elliot Johnson (S). And as an aside, 2B prospect Tommy La Stella is a LH batter… 😉

Here’s a name to consider… how about LH Kelly Johnson for a 1 or 2 year deal? His numbers weren’t All-Star caliber, but at .235/.305/.410 w/ 16 HR, 52 RBI in 118 games, batting mostly 7th or 9th for the Rays this year, he’d be a far sight better than anything we tossed out there in 2014.

And he played all over the diamond for Tampa last season, logging over half his games in LF, but also playing a good bit of 2B, 3B and a little 1B, as well as a few games as DH.

He could probably be had for about the same as the $2.45M 1-year deal he signed with the Rays last season. And at 1 or 2 years, he wouldn’t block La Stella.

If you trade Dan and eat $18M of his remaining $26M, you save back $8M over those 2 years. If you sign KJ for just $6M over the same period, your overall expenditures are $2M less, and you add a LH bat with more fielding versatility and greater optimism (and no Fredi doghouse) to the lineup.

Win/win as far as I can tell.

And there is nothing anyone will ever do to sell me on Elliot Johnson. He stole 8 bases in September after the race was decided and most opposing teams had inferior players auditioning for jobs next year. He was released by KC for cryin’ out loud. He stunk up the joint against a top notch team in LA and struck out at a pace rivaling Dan Uggla and BJ in the NLDS. He left more men standing than Mae West. At least when Dan makes contact, the ball has a chance of going somewhere. I wouldn’t pay Elliot Johnson to collect the sweat towels off the bench.

    One more thing…

When pitchers pitch to Dan Uggla, they know they have a 1-in-5 chance to get an out, but they also have to respect his 22 HR power. With Elliot Johnson, they can simply pitch to contact knowing that the ball has a great chance of finding someone’s glove… if he should actually make contact. Need I remind anyone that Elliot “Must Have Incriminating Pictures Of Fredi Gonzalez” Johnson had a lower OBP than BJ “I Haven’t Got A Clue At The Plate” Upton? He’s even a worse MLB player than Keith Lockhart! (You have to go back a ways to find all my vitriol toward keeping that bum on the roster for so many years.)

That and that alone is my biggest gripe about starting Johnson in the NLDS and not even having another plan on the roster. They chose to “do or die” with a guy they picked up off the scrap heap just 4 weeks earlier… a guy dumped by the flippin’ sorry Royals! All he did was leave 12 men on base during their pitiful 4 game playoff run. Think the LA pitchers weren’t afraid to make a mistake in front of him knowing that he couldn’t drive anyone in? Heck… I’d rather the guy strike out rather than hit into all the friggin’ inning ending DP’s. The dang pitcher had a better chance at driving in a run than Johnson.

So Raisins, how do you really feel about ET? 🙂

Every year, the Braves try to bring up some promising rookie, It’s tough to win with a roster full of them. That means 2nd base will be a prime spot for somebody to shine.

Yes, you guys are right about Elliot vs Uggla, At least Dan was a perceived threat. Unfortunately he had regressed to the point he was even missing mistake pitches. No one should ever doubt his heart and desire, that is what made it so tough to see him sit.

BJ Upton looked totally lost. He did have a good week but soon sat down. I did not get that one.

At this point, Dan reminds us of the guy who is stuck with the bad call phone and even the mugger won’t take it. To tell the truth, Dan would not hurt his prospects if he were to play some winter ball either. Of course, he already has $26 million in his back pocket no matter what he does.

I think it really depends on how much he wants to play beyond the next two years. My feelings is the Braves wanted him to have the eye surgery in the spring when he was first diagnose with the problem. His decision to wait so long did not really help his argument. Can’t say I blamed him but then, can’t blame the Braves either.

Given the option of ET or Constanza, I would opt for Elliot. ET has better base running skills. Having either in your starting line up in the play offs reeks of desperation.

I still think Huddy will be offered an incentive laden contract. He will have to decide if it is realistic.

The real surprize for the Braves has to be the emergence of Evan Gattis. I’d like to see him with a little bit heavier bat than the 30 ounce model he currently uses but that is what spring training is all about. I still think Bethancourt has one more season ahead of him in the minors. He needs to get the at bats. At least Gattis can play left field to be spelled behind the dish and still stay sharp with the bat. He can DH when playing the AL.

This will be Laird’s last season wearing a tomahawk across his chest. The Braves might add a defensive specialist who will spell Gattis and Bethancourt but don’t look for them to get a chance to hit much.

Gattis was not a gold glover in the outfield by any means but he improved greatly as the season progressed. You think he might plat a little winter ball as well to get some more time in the outfield or do you think he will be the Braves primary catcher going forward? At least he gives the Braves some options McCann did not.

While it is great to be versatile, I think most players would rather know where they are going to be playing everyday.

And yeah, Reed is likely gone. He is/was a great addition but he has never been an everyday guy. I have to believe that Schafer has a lock on the 4th outfielder’s spot and with Gattis as an option, that takes care of five.

The way I see it, Gil, Evan will be the #1 catcher, so the extra OF bench spot is Joey T’s to lose. He did a pretty good job there last year, can bat on either side of the plate, and can spell Freddie at 1B occasionally. I like him. He’s a grinder. He’ll stick on the roster unless they go get some grizzled LH bopper in the twilight of his career. Constanza is really just a fill-in when someone goes down. He’ll never spend an entire season on a 25-man roster.

As for ET, he is no longer under contract to the Braves and I hope he never is again. Goodbye and don’t let the door hit ya on the way out.

The bench will probably look like this:

    Gerald Laird, C (R)
    Jordan Schafer, OF (L)
    Joey Terdoslovic, OF/1B (S)
    Tyler Pastornicky, IF (R)
    mystery IF

It’ll be Ramiro Pena if he doesn’t take the starting job. If he does… then who knows? Maybe another utility guy. Maybe Janish. Hard to say yet. 2B really is the wild card this winter. Weird, huh?

Pena was a very valuable guy off the bench. Very “Prado-ish” in that role. It does make one wonder if his value would be diminished in an every day role. A bench of…

    Gerald Laird, C (R)
    Jordan Schafer, OF (L)
    Joey Terdoslovic, OF/1B (S)
    Tyler Pastornicky, IF (R)
    Ramiro Pena, IF (S)

… is quite a strength. Good balance, lotsa versatility.

Who knows..? Maybe Dan’s eyes will normalize over the winter and he and Fredi can kiss and make up. I just don’t have a good vibe about that last part… 😐

Here’s an interesting quote by Frank (courtesy of DOB):

I think, hope for Dan’s sake and our sake that he can make some adjustments, and with an offseason of getting used to normal vision, he can make some adjustments.

I must admit that I never considered that Dan might have to “get used to normal vision”. That seems so odd, but I suppose when you aren’t seeing correctly for so long, normal vision is kind of foreign. I just pretty much assumed if he can see now, he ought to be able to hit now. Maybe it’s not that simple…

I doubt he (ET) will be offered anything more than an invite to spring training. Why would anyone venture anything more?

As for Dan’s eyesight, I think it is why he should play a little winter ball. Of course, it might depend on his own confidence level or the seriousness of his intent to comeback.

Life is tough and it is even tougher if you are stupid, ask Francoeur. Biting the hand that feeds you gets you put down more often than rewarded….

    A. “Yeah, I think so. I think Elliot was a National League player that just happened to be playing in the American League for a long time until he came here. He can steal you some bases. Switch-hitter. Shoot he can play. I love those guys from Tampa. There are like eight guys on that team that could play like five different positions.”

It’s all relative Ber, I just don’t think the Braves really want him back when they have Gattis ready and Bethancourt waiting in the wings. I suspect Gattis will equal BMac’s offensive output if he plays everyday. Allows the Braves to spend elsewhere as needed. Not that Atlanta would mind having McCann back, just that they have other options.

    Well stated, Gil…

Hearing alot of interviews over the last couple of days as the FOT’s get ready to head to FLA for their organizational meetings. If I have put all the pieces together correctly, they will definitely discuss the Dan Uggla situation and decide what direction they want to go there. Otherwise, there isn’t alot else they can do right now. There are no alternatives with BJ. He’s here; he’s our CF. There is not much they can discuss regarding Huddy until he is cleared to do running and stuff in early November. They will certainly discuss their many arb eligible players and pick who to keep and who to non-tender. The list is long this year (not a surprise for such a young team) and includes:

Craig Kimbrel, Jason Heyward, Freddie Freeman, Chris Johnson, Kris Medlen, Brandon Beachy, Jordan Walden, Ramiro Pena, Jordan Schafer, Jonny Venters, Elliot Johnson, Paul Janish, Cristhian Martinez.

Of that group, I think all are safe except for the last 3. But none of those 3 are really a lock to be non-tendered. As for Martinez, the health of his shoulder will likely be a determining factor. Janish may simply come down to numbers. I will not mention “what’s his name”.

I imagine there will be some discussion as to whether to try to work out some long term deals with 1 or 2 of that group, also… buying out a few arb years like they did with Mac. Jason and Freddie are ripe candidates for such extensions. Funny, I remember when they approached Mac and French Vanilla about extending them. Mac said yes; French Fry said no. Wonder how many times he’s kicked himself over that decision? Wonder how many times Frank has thanked the good Lord over that decision?

It should be interesting to see if the Nationals play up to the hype next season. The Braves still have room for improvement. The core is here, just have to perform up to their potential.

Afternoon all, I have been looking at the history and comments about Tommy La Stella, the young 2nd baseman who is playing in the AFL this year. From reading about his performance in Mississippi this season, it appears it is his bat and not his glove which will gain him entry to the show.

5’11” and 185, he projects as a gap hitter. Sounds like a Marcus Giles type without the juice. He is still pretty young so I don’t look for him to supplant Pastornicky as Uggla’s likely back-up or Frank Wren’s plan B.

The Braves project to have at least 4 power bats in the starting line up next season with Heyward, Justin Upton, Freddie Free, and Evan Gattis. Chris Johnson and Simba have both show they have enough power to be considered a threat. That leaves BJ Upton, who could also be considered a power bat if he could make contact so having a punch and Judy guy at the top of the line up would not hurt.

And another thing, I don’t think Chris Johnson is best suited as a clean up hitter, he is better as a 5 or 6. To be honest, I would love to see J-Hey be able to hit further down in the order. It just seems a waste to have a guy like Heyward leading off.

Their zombie like viewpoint(not unlike nearly half the country thinking the Prez is really good at his job) that RBI’s are a mere team stat, and players have so little to do with it. Phillips drove in over 100 RBI’s last year, and they have repeatedly said he had a “down” year. His B.A. and Slugging is down…but…he hit .338 with RISP. And as good as Dan is defensively, Phillips, is the man at 2nd. Now, who would we have to offer to sweeten the deal…if Dan alone isn’t? 😉

Yep, after the flyin’ Hawaiian hit that grand slam, I stopped watching. Feel a bit sorry for the Tigers, they are like the Braves, only they at least make it past the first round.
Knew, just knew the Red Sox were not going to be contained. That has to be the scariest park for an opposing team to play in, to try to keep a lead in…
Have you seen the fire in the eyes of many of the Red Sox players? David Ross started one game…he was a one man wrecking machine . Saw him go in as hard as anyone at home against Mike Avila…was wondering why, then I heard that earlier in the game, Miggy had gone in hard on him…then a few innings later a hard wide slide of 2nd to break up a DP. It’s almost as if he could taste that the W.S. was within reach. And that he might not get another chance. Wish more Braves players felt that way. Some do. FF, Chris Johnson show a lot of emotion. The outfielders, the S.S., the pitchers…not so much
Funny, it used to be you didn’t see, or players were told not to show too much enthusiasm…They used a clip(ad) showing the Cards off…and man, Wainwright was screaming, flexing, emoting…not showing up the opponents(like a Dennis Eckersley seemed to do, though he swore he wasn’t, just emotional after a save). several other players…seems to me, there is two main ways to succeed in the playoffs, to go deep into the playoffs. Play with fire, yet be relaxed.
Reggie Jackson was obviously a very good player, a HOF’er. But, he’s the kind of guy you don’t want to see beat you. You know the Dodgers pitchers were told, don’t give him anything good to hit, yet…they did. Why? Well, he WANTED to be the man, thrived on being the man…but, didn’t fear failure he way you can see some hitters do. So many other players(braves players?) just can’t seem to relax(I imagine that would be me in a high stakes playoff game). He knew some pitchers were scared of him, at least to a degree. He wasn’t going to miss a mistake.
A someone different hitter(probably a better “pure” hitter) Manny Ramirez. He was so relaxed at the plate, you would think it was a spring training game! Sometimes it seemed like he didn’t care. I am sure he did…

Good thoughts, Ber! I think at times in the past that the Braves were too “professional.” Adrenalin sharpens the senses. That has to be helpful, unless the player gets carried away by it. Controlled adrenalin? Some seem to have learned how to do that.

OK.. so here are my thoughts on the Dan Uggla/Brandon Phillips rumor. First, and most importantly, it’s a rumor that has surfaced while this year’s playoffs are still happening. It is very premature. But that said, there are alot of layers to look at in this scenario. The Braves wouldn’t effectively be adding any salary on an annual basis. In fact, they would actually drop by about a half-mill per year (Dan = $13M/year, BP = $12.5M/year on average. Actually, it escalates from $11M, $12M, $13M, $14M through 2017). So we can take the money aspect out of it. Now, you are adding 2 years of commitment, but for Brandon Phillips, is that a bad thing? As for the inclusion of Tommy La Stella, well… La Stella is the heir apparent to Dan Uggla. If you have Brandon Phillips, do you need La Stella?

    Here’s how I see it:

On the positive -> We are losing Brian McCann’s bat, which is the most consistent, at least April through late July. BP would replace that consistency, and be a steady cleanup hitter who hits RHP and LHP equally well. He’s one of the best defensive 2B’s in the game. And if you’ll recall, pitching and defense up the middle was one of the mantras of the Braves during their unprecedented 14 years of dominance. He’s been an All-Star 3 of the last 4 years.

On the negative -> You do commit $50M for the next 4 years. Couple that with BJ’s contract, does it allow the Braves to offer extensions to both JHey and Freddie. (I think so, but what do I know?) Could that money be better used to pay for a #1 pitcher? (Again, I think so, but what do I know?) BP’s 2013 numbers are down from 2012, which were down slightly from 2011. Does he have 4 years left in the tank? (He’ll only be 36 in the last year of the deal. Utley and Rollins are ancient compared to him.) And you lose one of your few solid position player prospects, who is having a very nice AFL and could be on the 2014 roster of Dan is not.

As for my opinion? Well, I am riding the fence. Phillips gives you now what you’d like to get from La Stella, and then some. Phillips is an All-Star. He gives you a better chance of winning now. If you expect toe departure of some of your core in a couple of years (can you pay for JHey and Freddie?), you might want to hit that window now. But I really want pitching. I really want David Price. If BJ can learn to hit again, we do not need BP.

How was that for a lengthy narrative that came to no conclusion?

Here is something to ponder, too. Even with the sub-par seasons of Dan and BJ, the Braves still won 96 games. They reached their goal of winning the division with Dan and BJ. They earned home field advantage in the NLDS with Dan and BJ. They failed in the playoffs without Dan, and with limited BJ. So those two fellas cannot be held responsible for our failure to get out of the first round. I really don’t think our position players, our everyday lineup however injured and cobbled together, were the cause of going home in the first week of October. And the good news is that 7 of those 8 will be back next season barring some unexpected development.

Our failure can really be hung on the lack of a real ace to match up with the Dodgers, or any of the other teams for that matter.

Think about it… the Dodgers have Kershaw/Greinke. The Cards have Wainright/Wacha. The Tigers have Verlander/Scherzer. The Bosox have Lester/Peavey. Who do the Braves have? A bunch of talented kids. No disrespect intended, but Medlen vs. Kershaw or Wainright or Verlander or Lester? Or even vs. Greinke or Wacha or Scherzer or Peavey? Well…

    And there ya go.

As for being able to pay Freddie and J-Hey, I am not worried, that is down the road a bit and if the Braves are so destitute as to not be able to pay market rates for their two best position players, we won’t need to worry about getting to the World Series.

Pitching? Sure, would love to have a great front line guy, If you can’t afford to pay the guys you already have, you sure cannot afford to buy one on the free agent market. That said, the Phillies and the Nats had a first rate pitching staff, oops… Didn’t work out for them.

No, Gil, received nothing. It’s in the draft box? I’ll check in the morning. 1:30 am is not a recommended time to start work on a lead. 😀 Did you send it to the att.net address or the old one at ec.rr.com? The latter is outdated.

La Stella is looking stella! 😀

Gil’s great lead is now up! Some may see a big ugly ad stuck at the bottom of the post. It’ll cost $30 a year to NOT have ads. When I find extra pennies, I’ll pay their ransom to free us, but until then, we’ll have to live with it. 😡
