I took steroids for my knees…. Did not help my career in the over 40 beer league, I wonder what I was doing wrong? Oh yeah, forgot to take the HGH with that, plus the exercise.
One thing for sure, you think the little birdies are signing now? Wait until the Feds get involved. Guys will be outing their grand mothers faster than Michael Vick’s posse turn on him.

A little something I have learned in my life, if a person wants to break the rules to gain an edge, they will always find a way to do it. Making a new rule will only make life harder for those who already are flying the straight and narrow.

If cheaters were given the boot, it would stop. But there are too many greedy people with too much money who do not want it stopped.
Rose broke the rules and was banned. The Black Sox. But it is selective and everybody knows it. Does anyone think for one second that Clemons will be penalized?? Most of the others? Nope.
The people involved love money too much and the love of money is the root of all evil. Read that somewhere.

CL, Rose broke the rules but not as a player; he did it after he’d quit. I think he absolutely deserves to be in the hall as a player (he’s only the best there ever was) but should be banned from managing.
How ’bout ol’ Todd Pratt doing the juice and hitting about .180/2/12? Reckon what he’d have hit without it? Yikes.

Stinky, I’ll admit I just heard that argument on the radio this afternoon; I didn’t realize he was still playing. How about this: I don’t give a ^%$# what he did; anyone who played the game better than anyone else EVER played it ought to be in the hall. There are plenty of athletes with reprehensible personalities that are still at or among the best at their positions; their ability is undeniable whether or not they cheat on their wives or their taxes. Kobe shouldn’t have schtupped that white girl in Colorado while his wife was takin’ care of the kids; does that mean he can’t drop 80 on any given night? Pete’s a jerk; does that detract from hits and stolen bases? Not think so. Speaking of reprehensible personalities, good to see you here. 🙂

I agree that Rose was one fantastic player – just look at the phenomenal numbers – but he broke a cardinal rule. Maybe that dissuaded others from gambling also; we’ll likely never know.
If Bonds got the same harsh treatment it might go a long way towards stopping this cheating.
Cheating cannot be tolerated. Even the Twins use of the air flow in their dome against the Braves was cheating. Play honestly or don’t play at all.

You’ll love it! I had an ancient Compaq with a 6gb hard drive (Win98) and learned that thing inside out. Had to, with that tiny hd! After many years, finally stepped up to an HP Pavilion with XP. At first, I felt as if I had landed in alien territory and threatened to install Win98 just so I could be comfortable, but I stuck with it and now I love it! What did you get?

jimmy, I assure you that the oven is getting plenty of work. So far I have made double choc. biscotti, butter cookies (the spritz kind), macaroons, Russian tea cakes, M&M cookies & peanut butter kiss cookies. Plus fudge, peanut butter bonbons, buttermints & cinnamon-sugar frosted nuts. Yesterday I made 6 dozen sugar cookies & a dozen big Christmas tree-shaped decorated brownies for a client. Trust me, I’ve barely had time to check out the new computer because I can’t get out of the kitchen.

I’ve been reading some of Mitchell’s report regarding Clemens and his history with McNamee and it appears that Roger was still paying McNamee even into 2007.
“Clemens appears to be one of the two people associated with baseball — Andy Pettitte is the other — who have remained loyal to McNamee after he left the Yankees. Clemens has remained a source of income for McNamee up to and including 2007.”
According to Mitchell’s report, Clemens was instrumental in having McNamee hired by the Yankees.

I have noticed the jimmysmith develops a nervous twitch when ever FBG fires up her oven. Perhaps he keeps hoping another red velvet cake will fall his way.
I have a recipe for fruit cake that calls for Jameson Rye whiskey but discovered I could save a lot of time and trouble by just consuming the Jameson straight up and popping an occasional candied cherry.

pete rose was likely the best baseball player this journalist can remember seeing. could beat the braves by his pete rose self. charlie hustle – at a time the braves did not hustle all the time. always taking an extra base. always rattling braves pitchers. could not root for pete rose against the braves but always impressed with the play of pete rose. could play many positions – could always hit. bad haircut, though.

He did hustle … may or may not not have broken the rules while he was playing, and his play on the field was certainly Hall worthy … but, it bothers me not that he hasn’t been so recognized. One must be wearing rose colored glasses to think he was the best there ever was.
I liked his style of play, especially in his early years, but seems to me Hustler Pete cried foul and wanted a mulligan when old Gene stopped the streak.
I have no problem with the record books or even The Hall recognizing the accomplishments of those not enshrined … but, I don’t think that those who have brought shame to the game should be honored with enshrinement.
Well, at least Senator Mitchell’s report will provide fuel for discussion over the coming days …

Good question, Jimmy; I actually wondered that myself. Even a live Giraffe would have trouble with tech support using only hooves, no matter how well shod.
Bob, perhaps I shouldn’t have said he was the best ever; I certainly haven’t seen them all and I generally abhor blanket statements. Perhaps Cobb or Ruth, though they weren’t exactly model citizens either. Teddy Ballgame deserves a nod too, especially considering his multi-year millitary service right through the heart of his prime. My point is Rose didn’t stick a needle in his butt to make him get 4256 hits, 1314 RBI, 160 HR’s and 198 SB’s, nor did his betting on a game after he did all that affect it either. The hall is about the greatest players, not the nicest guys, and anyone who would argue Rose isn’t ONE OF the best ever players doesn’t have a leg to stand on, IMO.
MrGil, Jameson is best consumed neat or on the rocks with a nice Macanudo or Honduran; you are a man of taste and style.

jimmy, it’s my grandmother’s butter cookie recipe. You put the dough in a device called a cookie press & it squeezes fancy-shaped cookies onto the pan. Some people call them spritz. The new press I’ve got has a trigger so it looks kind of like a cookie gun, which I find amusing since it “shoots” very dainty little flowers, stars, hearts, etc.

Grinch, I gave up smoking 12 years ago and fear that a good cigar would trigger the urge to reacquire the taste for tobacco. So I will just limit my vices to the wild women and alcohol.
I never could acquire the taste for scotch but found that Jameson was a very acceptable substitute especially the 12 year old. Very smooth….

Ty Cobb perhaps murdered a black man, he is still in the hall. No talk of taking him out. Rose should be in the HOF, as a player. Ask yourself this: could he play…and far better than most? That’s a yes. I’ll leave judgement of his ‘outside the game’ activities to…others.
Have no doubt, if this wonderful “(dis)information age” existed 100 years ago, would there be anyone in the HOF? All it takes is a ‘sniff’ of impropriety and the ‘court of public opinion’ sprints to take up its position. Pretty sad, actually. It takes a lifetime to establish one’s legacy, and one malcontent to post something to unravel it, proven or otherwise. I have a real problem with that!

jimmysmith, this lady’s Most Precious Daughter bought an Acer a few months ago and it is a super machine. Acer is just breaking into the US market and there are some terrific buys available right now.
Mine is an HP Pavilion a556x purchased several years ago. Absolutely love it!

Hey, Berigan! Win98 wasn’t a bad program. I could go into those files and fix/modify/whatever most anything in it. Wouldn’t dream of doing that with XP. Daughter has Vista and it suits her needs; she mainly goes to game sites, reads. Doesn’t use programs, etc.
That link was interesting. I hate to see that Caple is voting for Bonds, though. Voting for him = endorsing cheating, steroids, etc.
Nacly, I too think Rose was an incredible player. He gave it his all, and without drugs. His numbers are just unreal!

We do look at some cheating with less vemon though, don’t we? Gaylord Perry’s spitters(As Caple mentioned) didn’t seem to P.O. people the same way. Perhaps spitters being around so long is the reason?

Other than having to buy new software and having driver issues, the transition for me from Windows 95, 98 and 2000 to Windows eXPensive was fairly positive. I am not going to go down that road again however. I still have several laptops that are using Windows 2000. Just a little harder to install some hardware.
I think it all comes down to what works for you. Hey, best time I every invested was taking two semesters of IT to learn how to use Microsoft Office. I recommend Corel to anyone who does not have an office program. Does the same thing for a 10th of the money. Once you learn one, you can usually figure out the other.
Real key to owning a computer is “back up your files” and make sure you have a warranty. It is not a matter of if your computer will crash, it is always when….

Hey, Salty! Maybe I was just fortunate but I didn’t have that much trouble with W98. Have had zero problems with XP, and since I switched to Firefox, haven’t had problems with the browser. IE hung up too frequently.
Berigan, to my thinking, if Rose is banned from the Hall then Bonds should be also. Rose’s play was without drugs, Bonds’ is with, which (to me) makes Bonds more the villain. Both were wrong in what they did, but no body challenges Rose’s records. Everybody will challenge Bonds’. He cheated. No HOF.
If Bonds is voted in, then he’s being told “It’s OK that you used drugs.”

a cookie gun . . . this intrigues jimmy smith. could make a lot of money at the ballpark with a cookie gun. fire a cookie into the mouth of chino cadahia. and what kind of devious mind invents a cookie gun? and if jimmy smith had a cookie gun and a friend needed to borrow jimmy smith’s cookie gun, well, no problem. also would send that friend some cookies and a pie. would be the right thing to do.
and journalist googled mitchell report and found this is not the first mitchell report! that’s right, not the first. mitchell apparently gets around. also came up with some calabash seafood. not sure why.
and jimmy smith is considering a new photo for this blog. not sure if jimmy smith will change as the current photo seams to suit this journalist well.

Recipe alert!
Home-made Chicken Pie! So easy you’ll hardly believe it!
9″ pie pan
2 Pillsbury ready-made pie crusts (one for top, one for bottom)
3 cups cooked mixed vegetables
1 cup corn
1 can Cream of Chicken soup
1 can Tyson’s chicken (water packed)
Set oven to 350
sit 2 crusts on cabinet to come to room temp
Cook the vegetables in pot on top of stove
Drain most (95%) of water from cooked vegetables
Add the can of soup and the drained chicken to the vegetables
Add about a half can of water or milk
Mix well
Unroll one crust and fit into pie pan
Pour the veg/chicken mixture into the pie pan
Unroll the top crust and fit it on top
Seal and trim the edges
Bake at 350 for :20
Remove from oven and place foil on the edges
Return to the oven for :25

Looks like the D’Back have been busy on the trade front. They picked Dan Heran from Oakland for a handful of prospects. I am glad he did not end up with the Mets. Looks like a good year to be playing the AL West in interleague play.

Also mentioned in the story is that the Diamondbacks traded there very good closer to the Astros. Astros gave up several players. After their 5 for 1 trade for Tejada a few days ago….will the ‘stros have to go with a 20 man roster next year???

Speaking of stuff….. All this talk about fried pies made me think of my former next door neighbor. She was a very large woman with a wonder laugh who hailed from Southern Pines, NC.
She ran a boarding house on our street and two of her specialties were fried apple turnovers and the best home made yeast rolls you ever put in your mouth. Often I would ride my bike over to her house just before supper hoping to get a small treat of one of those mouth watering morsels.
She also taught me how to make homemade peach ice cream. Using preaches from our orchard, she would peel and slice them and blend them with a concoction of cream, vanilla, sugar and love. We would pour it into a vat surrounded by ice and rock salt and we would turn the crank until the mixture hardened. Then she would ask me to play several hands of Canasta until the ice cream was ready and we would each have a big bowl. She too was a true Carolina Lady and I thank you folks for jogging those wonderful memories up for me.

Hillbilly, reading many pages of Mitchell’s report last night, most players mentioned were writing multiple checks for many thousands of dollars; a couple (and I can’t recall their names at the moment) had only 1 or 2 checks for a couple hundred dollars. Obviously not big users, nor repeat users.

If you have Internet explorer, click on tools, then internet options. Then click on the 3rd tab from the left, privacy. Click on advanced. I have custom settings, for some reason. I am sure it seemed like a good idea when I did this! So I have clicked on the box, override automatic cookie handling. Is this box clicked, or is everything “grayed” out? I chose accept 1st party cookies, like those from this site, but block 3rd party cookies.
I recall with an older version of IE, I had blocked all cookies, which didn’t work so well, had to sign in everywhere, and some sites didn’t let me on their home page, period. This MAY be your problem…or not.
No doubt, after I mention all this, you will have Mozilla!!!! 😦

One should remember that MLB Players Assoc. is not a real union. A real union would not allow for such a huge pay spread. A real union also would not allow for members to speak directly to the news media because they can always find someone who is not very bright to “say a few words”.
Former Nationals catcher, Gary Bennett, man upped and admitted what was said about him was true. Jimmysmith, I have to agree that it would be nice to hear something like that from Chipper but maybe he remembers the reception Palmerio got after he tested positive. Personally, I think Ralpheal was likely telling the truth that he did not knowingly take the steroids.
There will be a lot of “I did not have sex with that woman” type posturing but in the end the vast majority of those brushed with hearsay evidence will be found to be lucky they did not receive an indictment for their actions.

To be fair to Chipper, he may really feel this way, Both that players are tarred and feathered by a guy trying to get a lighter sentence, and that the union should have cooperated with Mitchell. I’d hate to be censored by the fact I belonged to a union, and couldn’t really say how I felt on a subject. Remember some dopes have tried to say he was on steroids…always been too skinny to be on the juice, IMHO…..could still be an airhead though! 😉 personally, I think he spent too much time around Turner, and ummmm, you know…….

Me little gray cells, like the old mare, are no longer what they once were … but, the only gray cells in Chipper’s memory bank may just be of his rumored 2006 visit in Philly. Wilbur, while Hoss is a hoss … his remarks are not worthy of Wurlitzer consideration. Perhaps the ghost of Alan Lane came to him in a dream and read and explained it to him … bah humbug!
Then again, perhaps, the same folks what gave John Schuerholz his “no comment” speech, gave Hoss his as well … but we do know why the current players refused to cooperate with Senator Mitchell … it was simply a matter of fehr or the silent, informal taking of the fifth of Royal Salute, which they didn’t want to do, though they could afford it .

that was stuff – written so that this journalist could transition to baseball. oh, the humanity! how shallow!
now, baseball in this town is not baseball anywhere else. what is happening here? the atlanta braves organization is supposed to be one of the best.
owners and management and players owe some kind of response to the fans. a dozen ex-braves (and who else on this team?) were clearly users (mitchell named those identified by witnesses and he had corroborating evidence). so, “don’t disparage anyone” but haven’t you clowns disparaged the game? and the organization? and humanity? well, maybe not humanity – but doesn’t look good.
so, turn away. and the commisioner will “take action”? bullfeathers (can say that, carolina lady?). what are the braves doing to clean things up? what journalist will find out? why is the union stance more important to the players than right and wrong and the integrity of the game? while chipper and crowd are looking the other way maybe fans will choose to look the other way when these clowns take the field. this journalist is a baseball fan but jimmy smith despises weak character displayed for all to see and mealy-mouthed drivel like that of chipper and j.s.
petrino decided he no longer wished to be a part of a sorry organization and bailed out. he took less money elsewhere to find a new and better environment. did he do it the right way? he’ll have to live with his own actions (and maybe realized this better than most who are now criticizing him) but he won’t have to live in an organization with no morals and with all the look the other way, one more chance crap.
braves brag on being a class organization. well, act like one. speak up and speak out. condemn the use of steroids. condemn the use by braves players. make a statement by ending the careers of any who violate the rules. end the careers of those in the organization that have already violated, or enabled others, or knowingly tolerated the use of steroids. players. coaches, manager, execs – if they were part of this get rid of ’em.

this is a very different blog than that other one we were used to. no room for this kind of talk there. someone must demand accountability. since the local media is not likely to do so (gimme a break there) perhaps it will be the fans who must say, enough.
now the report is done and fault is being found with the reporter and the report. where is the outrage? 12 ex-braves – maybe more. current players wouldn’t cooperate. chipper talks about hearsay and never condemns that the players refused to cooperate in the investigation! screw hearsay. cooperate and get to the bottom. clean up your game, superstar.

aaron giraffe, age nine, died today at zoo atlanta. aaron succumbed to toe issues. aaron is survived by betunia giraffe, the sole remaining giraffe in atlanta. aaron’s sweet spirit and long neck will be remembered by thousands of atlanta children who ejoyed his witty banter and love of the braves. aaron scored 90 on the hk intelligence test, which is smart for a giraffe. in lieu of flowers please send acacia tree leaves and shoots. oh, the mammality!

yes, bob, toes did him in. aaron had toe issues and required surgery. he had anesthesia but came out of it and briefly walked around and drank water. toes are not to be trifled with. aaron was nine years old.

The more I read “We believe the Mitchell Report will allow us to move forward and continue the progress we have seen since Major League Baseball’s drug-testing program began in 2002” the more disappointed I become … perhaps outraged is a better word.
Realizing that I may be censured, mocked and even banned for so saying, methinks
that if we would but stop trying to solve problems before we knew what they were … and/or without due regard for what they actually are, … then perhaps more problems would be solved!
Regardless, there’s a cancer eating away at the game, maybe our entire fabric …
The drug testing program isn’t and never was the problem … nor was or is it a solution … it’s just a way to try to cope with it … and then, after the 1,000th time of getting caught, they get a slap on the wrist while crying all the way to the bank.
The problem may never be solved … but, it certainly want so long as the players and management don’t fully embrace the notion that the game is for those of honor … that to knowingly cheat is dishonorable, that those who so do are to be despised and banned from participation … first offense! The simple truth is that those who truly embrace those principles never consider cheating so stiff punishment is appropriate as a way to address the dishonorable few who get into the system.
The notion of “innocence until otherwise proven” has some merit but pragmatically, it has become more of a haven for the guilty than a protector of the innocent. Those connected with the game should also embrace the notion that it is incumbent that their conduct be such as not to bring suspicion upon themselves … as having so cheated or violated the rules … and that to so do is grounds for severe sanction by the game’s governing body, including banishment in the best interest of the game.
Modifying the close of the Braves President’s no comment, “Then and only then will be able to look forward to a new day in baseball when we can focus on and enjoy this great game and the talented players who play it”

Thanks ssiscribe … for the kind words on “Braves and Stuff“. I agree with Sir Guy that it’s good to see you there … and hope it’s on a regular basis!
I don’t think you’ll find that writing for newspapers is much different than other endeavors when it comes to that learning curve … thinking back, after 10 or so years of experience, I probably thought the same thing … maybe even after 20 … but, over the years, I’ve come to modify that view … though it didn’t come easy. We can reason with anyone … the trick is getting on the same page and then allowing them to reach our conclusions and perhaps even gaining some insights ourselves.
Unless Chop Chick is an AJC contrivance, the Blog would appear to be ill fated and unless “CC” becomes more actively involved and participation significantly increases, methinks allowing it to die a natural death and rest in peace would well serve all concerned. I seriously doubt that “The Defector“, or any of us so reading, totally missed or materially disagreed with your point … but I don’t understand the relevance of “the vast majority of that came from a core group of bloggers who do not post (or infrequently post) on the other Braves blog” for I didn’t think the two blogs were connected.
While the notion of rotating postings isn’t novel or new, … and something I’ve supported from before the visit to The Chick’s Blog, it makes little sense for a fan blog without a core group of regular participants, … unless there was perhaps some available source of qualified guest hosts … nor would I think that it need necessarily be tied to the games as suggested by “it’s gotta be done from the fans’ perspective, either after the game or first thing the following morning“, though I think that would be a truly great daily feature for “Braves and Stuff“, starting with Spring Training!
Interestingly, Chop Chick has elected to return and add comments to her current “See you in the Spring” blog!

Great news! just heard from Sir Guy of the Savannah … they’re back home and while both are plum tuckered, his wife is much improved and it sounds like all systems are go for a bright tomorrow!
I thought that a certain young Grinch was going to share some memories, stories or magic moments with me … but I guess he figures he can afford to be uppity, now that he’s passed his finals and bought a fancy new Accer computer!

Funny, I had not bothered to revisit the Chop Chick blog once Carolina Lady began this one. I believe our creator gave us only so many words to dispense in our life time so why waste perfectly good prose in a place it is neither read or appreciated.
jimmysmith, all that lamenting over a giraffe and not one word on the thousands of walruses trampled to death due to global warming? A bias towards seals perhaps? Oh the humanity. And Diane Lane would be welcome at my house anytime. One lucky seal…..
And NLFT, okay to kick the doors down once in a while, helps to release all that anger and frustration. I used to crush the metal trash cans, You know the kind, 33 gallon galvanized cans. I would kick them until they were flat as a man hole cover. Really made me feel better, then they bought Rubber Maid trash containers. Just not the same, a really mean trick to pull on old Gil but I understood, others could not afford to support my anger.
I soon learned a better way, WORDS…. Of course I soon learned I could not unleash a torrent of words without some repercussions so I had to choose my words wisely. I have deleted many letters before I could rid all the venom in them. Still, I learned not to back down especially when faced with ignorance.
Now baseball, I ran into the Richmond Braves’ number one fan tonight while at the hockey game. I am going to try and get her to join our blog. Very knowledgeable young lady. Great fun. Okay, enough words for tonight….

My Lady, Carol’s says howdy and that she’s not perfect but doing okay … the cumulative drug buildup – inducing side effects of the treatment is a drag … though methinks she’s still perfect, at least that’s true when looking through my glasses!
I’m known for both laughing at myself and having problems with my petard … and here one that’s a bit of both albeit highly esoteric “my brother emailed me a very private message, following it up with another asking that I not share it with anyone …
SOME LESSONS ARE NOT EASILY LEARNED! … I emailed him back that it was too late, … indeed, that I had posted it on the blog as a Magic Moment since the story had special significance for me. The truth is that not even one of Lew’s complete fools would have so done, given the circumstance.
However, a “NO!! Don’t Do That!!” was his quick response, mindtriggering a brief moment of déjà vu panic … of course he knew that I was kidding and was having fun at my expense … him and his third layer of the onion humor … suggesting that I was desperate for stories for the blog … the humor being self evident if you could but read what he had sent.

Good morning all, My back woke me up this morning and I think it is getting worse, it is getting harder to just to get out of bed. Likely it is the residual affect from all the steps I mounted last night to attend the hockey game. The Richmond rink is starting to show her age I think. It is not a very user friendly facility and the seats are small than I remember. Of course that could just be me. 🙂
Not a whole lot of new baseball to talk about. Dan Haren to the D’Backs is about the biggest move made so far. I really don’t mind too much the betterment of the clubs out west. I learned long ago to “keep my nose in my own bag”.
As far as the Mitchell Report. One can only hope it will lead to a cleaner game. I like the home run ball too but I prefer one of snappy 2 hour Maddox like games to the 4 1/2 hour American League affairs.

Top of the morning to ya, Bob. Hope your bride is well; glad to see your update on the Braves and Stuff blog. Please send her our best wishes from the south side of the capital city.
The statement “the vast majority of that came from a core group of bloggers who do not post (or infrequently post) on the other Braves blog” was mentioned by me to back up my reasoning (in my opinion, mind you) for the vast increase in traffic on the Glavine: Take 2 blog, a blog that shut down two weeks after its creation (per the AJC policy, from my understanding).
By no means are the two blogs connected. You guys had to blow the cobwebs out of the corners and find the light switch when you came in here. That’s why I don’t (and have never) contributed to this space; no need to write something if nobody’s gonna read it 🙂 … not saying anybody reads what I write anyway, but that’s another story for another day.
I think this space is in need of serious rehab, but I disagree with the notion of some that it needs to go away. The AJC has fan blogs for all its other teams, fan blogs that are an accompaniment to the beat blogs. That was the original concept, and it’s one that is working for the other blogs set up by the AJC.
No reason it can’t work here, but the mindset and the methodology has to change. That’s why I’ve suggested — to the AJC, to the Braves and Stuff blogs, to this blog — that I’d be willing to contribute. I know the passion Braves’ fans have, and I have a lot of ideas that I think could make this work.
Believe me when I say this: I know the person(s) to talk to about this. Even if it turns out I do not or cannot take part in the actual reconstruction, I would hope some of my ideas will make their presence felt as the 2008 season dawns.
And if not? I’ll still be on the beat blog and on this here fine blog (you can count on me being a regular contributer). I’ll still be at games. I’ll still be enjoying my hometown team playing my favorite sport, still trying to explain to my kids the difference between a ball, a bunt and a balk.
If this place falls into the disarray and neglect we saw in 2007, it won’t bother me. I just hate to see potential wasted, and it is my belief there is potential here.
Now, I’m done discussing this topic once and for all (didn’t I say that already a few days ago?!?). Hope all is well.

WOW! I like this blog. I especially like the little pictures by the names. It is good to know what other bloggers look like. Journalist Bob looks a little like Pat Cleburne. I see no need to blog with the AJC now that this blog is here. Looks like Scribe30 could post here and bring good baseball content and makie a real contribution. The guy seems to fit better here than over there. I see that Chop Chick has a brand new blog this morning. Good for her. I wonder why that blog needs such an extreme makeover? Andruw Watch LAT: Jones, 30, said what was more important to him was that he identified what caused him to hit .222 last season for the Atlanta Braves. He hit 26 home runs, down from 51 in 2005 and 41 in 2006.
Upon examining video of his at-bats at the end of the season, Jones discovered that his balance was poor because his stance was too wide by about four inches, according to Boras.
“That his elbow was hurt didn’t help,” Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti said, referring to a hyperextended left elbow that hindered him for much of the season.
Jones said he would “love to” hit fourth and that he wanted to wear No. 25, the number he wore with the Braves. The number currently belongs to pitcher Esteban Loaiza.
“We need to discuss that,” Jones said, grinning at Colletti.

I’d like to weigh in on one more topic. Steroids. There is no need for steroids if you consider the beneficial effects of bananas.
Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes.

sscribe… At least you didn’t mention a dead animal. Is the Chop Chick an animal? Hummm, anyway… It is good to read your prose. As you know, I still frequent other haunts but have found this particular piece of cyber space to be a very pleasant respite.
To be honest sscribe, you are one of my favorite bloggers. I always enjoy reading your postings. Having said that, I also enjoy reading the musings of many other esteemed journalists. I find myself often in search of those gems that enlighten and amuse as well as those that inform.
I doubt I shall be a monogamous blogger ever as I love the interactions with people on a verity of topics. I will share some of my life experiences with folks and I know some will enjoy while others will scroll on by the ramblings. It is their choice but at least it is a choice for them to make.
I hope I will see you often as your words and experiences are insightful and remind me of the joys of family. I thought about your passion for the Thrashers as I watched the Renegades take on the Ice Bears in a minor league hockey match. The only reason I attended the game was because my oldest daughter’s one wish for her birthday was to go to a hockey game and sit at center ice. She turned 37 yesterday and she still remembers me taking her to games when she was a little girl when Richmond was in the American Hockey League as the number one farm team of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Actually, Pete Orr signed a minor league contract with Washington but will get an invite to the major league camp. I think the Gnats are thinking about using him as a utility guy. See, so many former Braves are coming to DC that when I tune in and hear Don Sutton, I will think I am listening to the Braves broadcast. How long before Thorman shows up I wonder?

Mystery Beast Kills Animals in East Carolinas.

BOLIVIA, N.C. —
An unknown predator mauled a pit bull and killed two puppies in Brunswick County, and residents fear it’s the same animal that killed three dogs in September. No one has reported ever seeing the animal.
The county’s animal control agency investigated the animal’s tracks, droppings and other clues but couldn’t determine what attacked the dogs. Locals call the unknown animal the Beast of Bolivia. Some residents and experts said the predator may be a bear, a wayward panther or cougar, or even a wolf because 3-inch paw tracks were found at the scene.
Many suggest the predator came from the nearby Faircloth Zoo, which had a lion and a tiger before it closed more than a year ago. Animal control officials said the animals were sent elsewhere.

a large hawk is flying in the neighborhood today and this could portend blue worms. not sure, but possible. maybe even likely.
once, a hawk swept from the skies to lift a blue worm from the garden of jimmy smith. as the hawk drew within inches of the blue worm and saw the fierce look on the worm face and the razor sharp teeth in the worm mouth, the hawk tried to draw away – only to be snared by the blue worm and consumed on the spot. is this not a lesson in life? a lesson in blogging?
and now, savannah gal is better and all bloggers are glad. please contimue to get good reports. blog health must improve for all blog families.
and it is the holiday season. and baby seal and diane lane have gone out to chop down a Christmas tree. baby seal is taking the chop seal name quite seriously. has created a small problem with jimmy smith’s neighbor but journalist is in norway. diane lane must deal with issues. perhaps a nice pudding for the neighbor. oh, the humanity! neighbor started it.

and blog controversy is unbecoming of bloggers. bloggers should blog where the blogging is fun. now, this journalist admits to having some fun elsewhere but that time has passed. and now jimmy smith is one of carolina lady’s regulars. not sure anything regular here, though.
and cookie gun. have heard nothing more from flbravesgirl. perhaps a gun full of cookies is on its way to jimmy smith right now. should be fun unloading.
and this blog should award birdhouses. that’s right, birdhouses! free birdhouses to everybody! hand made in north carolina. better than a wurlitzer because birds can live in it. could be called bird-howitzer. shoots cookies. or maybe something else. still developing the idea.

Well now, Chop Chick seems to be self destructing so continued posts there are probably counter productive. However, her new posting did eliminate our advertising, regardless of intent.
I suppose I’ll just have to pay a visit later this evening, after supper, and respond to one of the few comments on the Blog asking for “where are they now” type stories … since one of the intended “insider” features of “Baseball’s Magic Moments” is to include stories from and about former sportscasters, sportswriters, players, coaches, etc. … and in so doing, leave the links to both sites … perhaps thanking CC> for the opportunity to remind folks of where we are, the humor of which may or may not be appreciated!

Wish I could offer more baseball information so as to assure up to the minute reports like other important sports blogs but I have integrity and do not wish to spread idle gossip and wild rumors.
I other related news the Nationals has denied reports that “O Canada” will be sung prior to every home game in honor of their newest acquisitions.
Would jimmysmith perhaps be interested in a lightly used “Salad Shooter” in place of a cookie gun? Great fun when loaded with a large cucumber…..

SG, we’ve all followed the Beast of Bolivia stories closely. The extreme drought here is bringing out all sorts of animals that one wouldn’t ordinarily be aware of. Here on my property, I’ve seen at least 2 coyotes. Some have also been spotted south of me. Could be the same 2 as they have large range.

beast of bolivia? journalist knows of no such beast. now, hartebeest . . . truly a beast of beastly proportions. would shame a poor bolivian beast. and coyotes – has someone notified chipper jones? could bring a huntin’ party to the carolina lady ranch and do some huntin’. carolina lady would get to meet some ballplayers and have them in for afternoon tea and polite conversation . . . uh, yeah. and if there really is a bolivian beast what is it doing in north carolina? bolivia is in north carolina? and the bolivian army is on alert, right? sounds fishy to jimmy smith. could be trolls at work.
and now, baseball . . . are we to believe baseball players who have so much money and many health care options decide to treat toothaches and sore shoulders and such with substances supplied by clubhouse boys? hmm…. believable, right? $4,000 to the clubhouse boy to treat shoulder soreness. sure. look the other way.
and do beat writers shower with the players after a game? look at backs and things? investigative reporting? then why not toes? why do we not know for sure about chipper’s toes? may be confused but think that may have come up awhile back. should find out for sure.
and katie couric will interview a-rod. should be riveting. and why not chipper, too? may just be hearsay.

One thing is absolutely sure: there is no hunting on this Lady’s property. The few who have tried know they are likely to be met with a load of birdshot in their backsides. I regularly cover every acre out here. And I’m a pretty fair shot. Word got around that there are safer places to hunt. 🙂

The Daily Buzz (Fly on Wall Report No. 034)
Mr. Fly has been called back from his off-season vacation to investigate the Atlanta Falcons and now will shed light on this debacle. Contrary to popular belief, Mr. Fly has not been vacationing in Florida…he has been busy at work, gathering the news. Without commission and making a rare report on a game other than baseball and orange blossom hunting, Fly made his way back to Atlanta prior to the critical “negotiations” between Petrino and Blank.
Since Mr. Fly is not close to either subject and Mr. Shuerholz wasn’t around to offer his suspenders as a hiding place, Fly risked everything to sneak past security guards at the Falcon’s headquarters and slip into the office of Mr. Blank. Mr. Fly carefully positioned himself on a wall above a big orange box named Depot filled with money. The following is an excerpt of the meetings over two days:
(Day 1 – The Meeting)
BLANK: so Bobby, you’re staying right? We have a contract.
PETRINO: you have my word. You have a manager.
BLANK: good. Contracts are as good as a man’s word.
PETRINO: a man’s word is his honor.
BLANK: we see it the same way then.
(Day 2 – on the phone)
BLANK: you &%$@, you left!!! Dammit man!!!
PETRINO: you sideline standing, micromanaging Jerry Jones wannabe, I’m gone.
BLANK: you cheating, lying sack of pig @$&%$.

BLANK: Dan…uh, what are you doing these days old friend?
REEVES: lovin’ life Art. Read about your, um, difficulties of late.

BLANK: sigh. Yes Dan, people just don’t honor contracts anymore.
REEVES: didn’t Bobby break one to join you?
BLANK: uh…yea.
REEVES: didn’t you fire Mora while he had a contract?
BLANK: uh…yea.
REEVES: didn’t you look the other way with the Vick drug shenanigans?

BLANK: absolutely. I have a great team and great management.
REEVES: right. Oh, why did McKay get passed over for NFL Commissioner?

As soon as Dan hung up the phone, Mr. Blank called a press conference. The selected media message was a “woe is me” tactic. Who will be the next manager of the group of football players known as Falcons?

My question is, did the players claim the money paid for steroids as a medical deductible? Maybe they should have just invested in Jack LaLane’s juicer. Could have combined it with the salad shooter. Yummy, liquid cucumber. Would not have shown up on the drug charts anywhere….. Lower cholesterol, Taste Great!!!!! Wow, think of the marketing ideas.

CL, Merlin is doing well! He truly believes that God will allow him to eat again, he has had a feeding tube put in, and his spirits remain high! My wife has been relentless in her research of alternative cancer treatments. They gave him 2 months to live back in June, but he is here and for the time being; he is getting a little stronger. He has been able to maintain his weight as well. Of course, he gets frustrated not being able to do everything he wants to do. The man never missed a day of work in over 30+ years, so sitting around is something he is not accustomed to! But, all things considered; he is doing quite well. Susan and I appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers. We also know that nothing is beyond His ability.

mrgil, it is quite miserable here! I work a ways away from where I live, so I decided to try and beat the storm as I have some very important deadlines to try and meet tomorrow. Instead, I drove right into the teeth of it…not a fun drive! But, I made it to the office safe and sound. We are currently getting an added bonus: sleet and freezing rain! My wife pines for warm weather already…I told her we could always move to an Atlanta suburb and get season tickets!

Jason, that’s good news! 31 years ago my mother was diagnosed with end-stage pancreatic cancer, given 30 – 60 days to live and was sent home to die.
Big-time prayers were made.
She’s here today at age 83, still telling me how to run my life!
(The doctors only shake their heads, at a loss for explanation.) 🙂

Savannah Guy, it is great to converse with you yet again. I never did fully respond to a story that you had shared with me. In the chaos of the times, I just never got back to getting caught up on e-mail, and I was absent from cyberspace for a while. That being said, I want to thank you for sharing such an inspirational story. It continues to provide hope to this day. But, at the time you shared it; it was invaluable. I hope all is well with you and your family.

Jason > Not at all interested in that. Rather have Tavares or another seasoned over 300 bat in the lineup, along with some kids or money kicked in from the trading tam. Or, how about Matt Holliday for James and a few from the farm and some money. I know, I know…dreaming.

Fuentes would give us more options late in the game. He has closer experience and is a lefty. I do not trust Ohman as our late inning lefty! Fuentes could fill the role that Gonzo was acquired to fill last year. Moylan/Acosta/Fuentes could then be the primary setup guys depending on who was up in the 7th and 8th innings. Also, if Soriano needs a day off in the middle of one of the tears that we will go on, Bobby has the luxury of bringing in someone with closer experience.
Just a thought…the brain trust seems to think that we have enough starting pitching (do you ever?), and Chuck seems to be the name most often mentioned. I think Jo-Jo has more upside in the long run.

Carolina Lady > Sore throat is not a good thing. I have a recipe for you. It must be followed precisely:
Step One
1) Add 1 tsp. salt to a small glass of hot water. Mix…
2) Gargle…do not sallow.
3) Repeat.
Step Two
4) Juice 1/2 lemon and mix with 2 tbsp. honey and one jigger of Bourbon.
5) Microwave to heat it up…stir…mix…
6) Sip slowly.
Old family recipe. Makes you smile too. If alcohol is not acceptable, substitute for Apple Cider. If alcohol is acceptable, substitute plain bourbon for Knob Creek and repeat step two until a mellow glow appears. Sleep tight.

The morpheus mug is better screen pic than a Glock…unless someone tries to break into your home. Then a 45 works better. These avatars are pretty small…takes quite a bit of cropping.
Somehow I just knew I’d hear from the Grinch before Christmas. But in this case it’s a good thing. How ya been? Looks like a half goat on that face. Nice. And the nose looks ok…after having it in the books so long.

Ahhhh….hot showers are a good thing. Yes, SG; I thought an entire goat on my face might be a bit excessive…though it might help me save money on haircuts. As for home defense, the .45 is better for the car or the yard; my trusty Remington 12-gauge w ghost ring sights and a pistol grip works better for the house; less chance of a bullet travelling through a wall and hurting a loved one. Plus, it makes a mighty nasty mess of the intruder. 🙂

My Lady, I wasn’t seriously considering any malicious behavioral activity … but have found the Chick’s shift from a personal “I” to “we” interesting. I didn’t and don’t really think that the purpose of the Chick’s new post was to hide our urls … had I so thought, I would have shared those thoughts and my intended action by email, rather than posting them … though it may well have been a consideration.
I did just post this to one blogger … LB, I think it’s ironic that Milo’s most famous call was Hank’s number 715 as I don’t think he really liked him. I know that he suffered a heart attack in October … I sometimes listen to Astro games and Milo still has a distinctive voice … he’s has been announcing their games for many years. He went to the Pirates following his stint in Atlanta and then to the Cubs, before joining the Astros.
I too like the “Where Are They Now” type stories and they are a planned feature of my Baseball’s Magic Moments Blog. As an aside, … doing a simple Google search on the people in which you’re interested often times provides you with such information.

Lew and Jason, I truly feel sorry for you guys if you got all that wind behind the snow last night. We had about 2 inches of rain which was not a bad thing but the Christmas decorations caught heck yesterday.
Wow, it’s Monday again already….. Time does go by faster as you get older. After starting out in a pedal car, this Ferrari I’m riding in now is beginning to feel like a rocket ship. I learned far to late in life that money comes and goes as does many material things but you can never regain time lost.
