20: Driven by that championship moment

ATLANTA – The ball hung in the air for what seemed like forever. It stayed airborne for just a few seconds, but those ticks of the clock felt like a lifetime.

Inside a stadium jammed full of people on a cold October night, throughout a sprawling metropolitan city, and around countless TVs and radios scattered far and wide, a fan base held its collective breath.

The moment – one born on sandlots and storytime and highlights of Octobers past, one forged through two heartbreaking near misses – finally had arrived.

And as Marquis Grissom gloved Carlos Baerga’s fly ball at 10:27 p.m. on Oct. 28, 1995, Braves Nation erupted in a joy that washes over only those who have just witnessed their team win the World Series. It is a moment I was so very blessed to experience in person, eight rows high in the upper deck, down the right-field line at old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

Every year about this time, as baseball players gather their belongings, end their winter slumber and head south for spring training, I think back to that magical moment that now is 12 years old. In some respects, it seems like yesterday; in others, it feels like an eternity.

That’s what they play this child’s game, for a chance to win it all, to run onto the field knowing the season is over and the pursuit is finished, and you have made it to the finish line. No more late-inning tension, no more clutch hitting needed, no more pleading for that ground ball to turn two and get you out of this bases-loaded jam.

It’s over. You’ve won.

You’re the champion.

It’s the moment fans long for, too, because a team’s fan base is an extension of the team itself. Fans live and die with every pitch. Fans hang in the balance as games go back and forth. Fans save money to take their kids to experience the game first-hand, just as their dads and granddads did for them. Fans forego sleep and rearrange plans and get in arguments with their best friend and their better half because of a team made up of people you may never meet.

And that’s OK. That’s what fans do. And when that team, the one that is among the few items consisting the center of your existence from February to October, wins the World Series, the euphoric feeling is one that never, every fades away. It warms the coldest winter morning. It burns deep inside your soul, and always will.

It’s moments like this that remind us of why we do this in the first place, why we come together with people scattered far and wide to stand united behind a jersey, a hat, a rallying chant, a manager and a franchise. It does not matter what color we are, where we live or how much money we have in the bank. Our political and religious preferences and biases are checked at the door. The day-to-day grind takes a back seat, if only for a few hours 162 times a year. Together, we stand as fans, and as the journey begins again, we know there will be heartbreak and ecstasy. We know there will be moments where we will swear off this ragged bunch of semipros forever and ever.

But there will come a moment when the team rallies for a victory it has no business getting, when Smoltz or Hudson or Glavine authors a masterpiece, when Chipper or Frenchy or McCann blast one 425 feet deep into the clear Georgia night, and we’ll remember why we fell in love with this team – and this game – in the first place.

I don’t know if the Braves will win the World Series this year. But I know I’ll be on board for every step of the journey. It’s now, in the midst of February, when the rush begins. It will end as the leaves change and the weather turns cold again. And when it does, somebody will be running onto the field, throwing their gloves high in the air like kids and celebrating a dream come true. Its fan base will jump with glee, shed tears of joy, hug total strangers and bask in the warmth of seeing their team win the world championship.

Here’s hoping this year, it’s our turn. Again.

CL…. I don’t know what was said or by whom but please take heart that you have a loyal following. Unfortunately, at the point in time access to players is limited to those with bona fide credentials. That should not deter us, however, from expressing ourselves pro or con as to the moves made by the clubs or the performance of players on the field.

There are lots of very good minds assembled on the B&S blog. As far as pure entertainment, this is the best. You folks should see some of the National’s blogs I have visited. They are lucky to have 5 post in a week. So, CL… Do not worry about what others may say or do, to thine own self be true…

I agree, CL, it is real poetry. Scribe, I am in awe of both your way with words and your loyalty to your team. I can not hope to match the former but we will be shoulder-to-shoulder in pursuing the latter. GO BRAVES!

So, you are the boss, be here when you want to be, but 99 times out of 100, this is a wonderful place to hang out and you are a big part of the reason! Folks respect you like they would …well, no one else! 🙂

And I am reposting this from the end of the other blog…this is just a feel good kind of story that folks should read…

This is a very nice story on an ESPN baseball writer Jim Caple involved in a fantasy baseball camp. Bert Blyleven, and a 60 year old catcher who had open heart surgery in Sept are some of the key players….

I have to admit that I “lurked” over there yesterday. I was curious who was posting there. I saw a couple of our “cross-overs” and some of the old school, but mostly folks with whom I am not familiar.

I didn’t read much of the commentary but the line of the day belonged to NC Scoots, who I miss. He told Anders, “Congratulations Anders, get one more right and you will be even with a clock.” LMAO.

I will have to say that ww was there in his other regalia and name. I can’t say what he was doing in fear of falling off the wagon, but I’m sure that he later required a lot of lip balm.

Anyway, I’m quite happy here where I consider myself among friends.

now, window cleaning expert, mr clean has posted with carolina lady! mr clean will be back this afternoon so, if any blogger has a tough cleaning question that blogger can have the question answered by mr clean later today.

jimmy smith would like to ask mr clean how to remove small seal stains from a hardwood floor? (small seal, big stains)

and baseball is imminent. and the use of imminent is what got barry bonds in trouble. “what, what chop seal?” liniment? not imminent? please disregard.

and flange1 and jimmy smith have had some dialogue and jimmy smith and flange1 are now buddies. flange1 knows some baseball so here’s hoping braves and stuff will see some good posts soon from flange1.

and berigan, welcome back from duluth! cold in minnesota?

An interesting question…. Do folks blog on political post where everyone agrees with their particular point of view thus reinforcing their idea of right or do they look for a fight and try to thrust their own point of view upon anyone who will take the time to read their post? I have discovered the answer is yes…. Therefore I am officially announcing myself as an undecided so all will pander to me trying to win my favor… 🙂

This is a good plan as long as people do not have long memories and don’t have guns….

And baseball…. Soon many more important issues to discuss than politics. 🙂

    Gil,
Will tip toe around the subject. I think I have mentioned that I frquent a jazz board(Never seen the honorable JJS there though!) and for some unknown reason, they HAD to create a politics section since everyone talked politics in between Louis Armstrong and Miff Mole posts. Just kidding, no one posted about the great Miff Mole.
So, everyone there for some reason is liberal. Not John Kerry Liberal, Dennis Kucinich liberal(In fact, I don’t think he is liberal enough for them! :p )
So, very interesting to talk about politics there, as long as I don’t mind the occational death threat(Not really, well, once, be he was stomped on for saying that) it is interesting to talk with those who do not share my views.
As for similar views…well, you find out after awhile that even on a website like http://www.littlegreenfootballs.com there are people that don’t share your view on all subjects, if even most of your viewpoints. The hatred against McCain right now shows this.

So anyway, if you are for real change vote for Pat Paulsen in 2008!!!! Don’t let the fact he has been dead for almost 10 years sway you! 😆

TheJackAss is going to be TheJackAss again for just a few minutes…let it be known in advance that my comments are just my opinion, and mine alone…

As far as I can determine with my limited access is that The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is a major newspaper, the flagship publication of Cox Enterprises…supposedly reaching a total print and online audience of more than 2.3 million people each week…3.5 million visitors each month who access it’s Web sites…evidently a very important news and entertainment outlet for many people…although readership has been in a steady decline…in 2005 the AJC reportedly had an annual revenue of $12.0 billion…with 77,000 employees…

Taking the above into consideration…the AJC sports department should have no problem operating a successful Braves beat blog…

Now, to the heart of the matter…Bravesandstuff was created by a sweet lady down in Carolina…on a home computer…she has no budget…no backing from some huge media conglomerate…no staff, she works alone while at the same time caring for her dear mother…no tech support…no salary…no advertising department…and sadly, she also has seemingly little appreciation for her sacrifice and efforts as of late…but in just a few short weeks her little blog has had nearly 18,000 visitors…damned impressive!…

She created Bravesandstuff at a time when AJC’s “super blog” no longer valued, nor welcomed, some of it’s regular bloggers…good people who put that blog on the map…there was nothing staged, nor contrived, about the exit…it was out of necessity…and now Bravesandstuff has become our home…our home does not require one damned thing from AJC in order to be successful…it already is…and I hope that it will continue to be the furthest thing, as far as ideology and character are concerned, from anything AJC has contrived…

Let me make this last point perfectly clear…there is absolutely nothing wrong with folks who enjoy visiting both blogs…nothing wrong with sharing information and stories…but when anyone attempts to carry something from one blog to the other for the purpose of disrupting or destroying either blog…then that activity becomes reprehensible and disgraceful…and will not, and should not be tolerated by the entire blog community…

Bravesandstuff is a separate and independent entity capable of standing on it’s own…it is not an ‘alternate blog’…it is ‘the blog’…and if you don’t feel this way, then maybe you belong somewhere else where you will feel more at home…no, there are many things that Bravesandstuff does not have that AJC does…but Bravesandstuff has a person at the helm who does so from the heart, and at great personal sacrifice and effort…she has made it a personable experience here…creating photo sections…allowing the denizens to write the lead stories…on and on…but most importantly, she has personified character…class…compassion…and grace…so let’s all stand behind her with our support and participation, and stop all the damned childish bickering and self-promotion…and let AJC keep whatever it was striving for ‘over there’…I think what I have just said needed to be said…and TheJackAss is not one to mince words…any repercussions can be laid solely upon my shoulders…

    TheSouthernJackAss…

Well-The Artist will say this and it may be taken however any individual wishes to take it.

First, The Artist (since speaking in Third Person seems to be the accepted mode) wishes that the Esteemed Journalist would be at Spring Training. The Artist would be more than happy to buy him an entire pie of his choice, were he there. Might even boost my blood sugar sharing it with him.

The reason I imported the passage from the Chipper post to Braves and Stuff was not to cause dissension and not to point out that AJC was better than, worse than or equal to Braves and Stuff. I imported it because I was quite proud that Chipper had mentioned my name twice and once in reference to the fact that my posts were insightful. I felt that since most here did not visit there any more, I would bring it to their attention, figuring that as my friends, they would be happy for me. Oh well. You may think my motives ulterior. I cease to attempt to change anyone’s opinion of me or of anything. They are what they are. Concerning myself with others’ thoughts of me proves to be less than beneficial and I have better things to do or there will be no awards anywhere flowing from my brush or pencil.

Quite honestly, my entire motive throughout this whole damn thing has been to say Enough Already. We are mature adults (though all are more than capable of behaving otherwise) and should know when it is time to pass onward to different topics. I simply tried to point out that many did not feel similarly or, even if they did, were just not sure why it was, seemingly, such a large issue many months later, when this blog had become successful-through the efforts of EVERYONE. I felt that recognizing CL with the award was the correct thing to do, but we have all had a hand in what has happened here-In More Ways Than One!!!!.

Peace out, children. The artist is tired, fatigued and has been painting nonstop for days. I’m cold and there are feet of snow outside my windows. I’m ready for Spring Training and tired of strife. I need to finish the deer.

    Scribe, as always, great post.

Paladin, are you saying that you saw me in an ad similar to the Got Milk ads but instead you saw me in a Got (expletive)? ad sporting a crusty mustache? LOL

Gil, I would talk politics with you but I obviously don’t behave so mature when I do.

Savannah, obviously we got love for each other but are both so passionate about certain things we get on each other’s nerves every once in a while. When I get ticked, unfortunately, I am not as concise about what I am trying to say. I let the emotion take over what I truly think. And, trust me, I should be better than that. I have spent a lifetime hearing my father preach to me to stop letting my emotion take over my intelligence. It’s a struggle.

CL, you have indeed built a great blog and have much admiration from me for it. I will visit often because I am quite fond of everyone here even if I don’t always agree with everyone at all times.

As for all the drama, cut the crap everyone. You are too good, too funny, too intelligent, too creative, too beautiful and have too good of a place to sweat the small stuff. To me, it seems like alot of imaginary drama.

ugabrave, if you read this, let them be. They are good people. It means no matter who blogs where or who says what. Blogging should always be about the sharing of ideas and life experiences and and the freedom to say whatever you want, wherever you want, with whomever you want about whomever or whatever …. there should be a shared common decency that is respected of course ….. but at the end of the day, who really cares who is who and who is where. let’s all get back to hardcore journalism and focus on the who, what, where, when, why of the Braves whereever you decide to do so and less on the who, what, where, when, why of the blogger. The blogger must never let themselves become the story or bigger than the story. Otherwise, it becomes the Today show and people for no good reason wonder where in the world is Matt Lauer as if anyone really cares about Matt Lauer when we can actually find him.

Yes, those are indeed the talking points for the day that I have been spoonfed by MSNBC and the New York Times. 🙂

Mr. Clean…welcome to the blog. We have good denizens here that are usually pretty clean so there shouldn’t be much work for you. No work, just play for you. This is a forum for adults who can and do say whatever they want. Sometimes they are subtle and sometimes candid. Hope you like it.

You are bald. Did you lose your hair due to harsh and toxic ingredients in your cleaning products or is that just a style thing? Can arms be uncrossed?

So much seriousness and angst on the blog lately. Could be winter doldrums or cabin fever (Lew is seeing snow feet while eating a deer), or election campaigns or the lack of whirled peas or Roger Clemens wife or AJC pestering or the writers strike or Santana going to Mets or the cost of tea in China or the possibility that China tea is tainted with lead or the phase of the moon or somebody steamed somebody or too much hot tub time or no pie deliveries or everybody has bright white legs from being cooped up so long or the hot stove is cooled or brownies were not distributed or something. In all seriousness, that’s understandable. Seriously. No, seriously. No, uh…

But seriously, that’s perfectly hunky dory (first reference?). Blogging and baseball is a serious business for adults but adults can be kids and silly too. Silly Mike Myers makes a good point:

“Silly is you in a natural state, and serious is something you have to do until you can get silly again.”

Now we have so much to be happy about and look forward to. Spring is coming and that means baseball. We also have our own great blog thanks to Carolina Lady and now we have an official new name for award winning posts on the Braves and Stuff blog. The Kelly Award.

Such a prestigious award must have an official and serious Kelly Award Song to commemorate and celebrate the occasion.

and now, the newly reformed jimmy smith has a joke.

the pastor asked if any one in the congregation would like
to express praise for answered prayers.

a lady stood and walked to the podium. she said, “i
have a praise. two months ago, my husband, jim, had a
terrible bicycle wreck and his scrotum was completely
crushed. the pain was excruciating and the doctors
didn’t know if they could help him.”

there was an audible gasp from the men in the congregation as they imagined the pain that poor jim experienced. she continued, “jim was unable to hold me or the children and every move caused him terrible pain. we prayed as the doctors performed a delicate operation. they were able to piece together the crushed remnants of jim’s scrotum and wrap wire around it to hold it in place.”

again, the men in the congregation squirmed uncomfortably
as they imagined the horrible surgery performed on jim. and the wife continued, “now, jim is out of the hospital and the doctors say, with time, his scrotum should recover completely.” all the men sighed with relief.

thunderstruck by the wife’s account, the pastor slowly rose and hesitantly asked if any one else had anything to say.

a man rose and timidly walked to the podium. he announced, “hi, i’m jim and i want to tell my wife, ONCE AGAIN, the word is STERNUM.”

oh, the humanity! sure to be banned.

    pitchers and catchers report soon.

    Love this:

The Greatest by Kenny Rogers (1999)

Little Boy, in a baseball hat
Stands in the field with his ball and bat
Says I am the greatest player of them all
Puts his bat on his shoulder and he tosses up his ball

And the ball goes up and the ball comes down
Swings his bat all the way around
The world’s so still you can hear the sound
The baseball falls to the ground

Now the little boy doesn’t say a word
Picks up his ball, he is undeterred
Says I am the greatest there has ever been
And he grits his teeth and he tries it again

And the ball goes up and the ball comes down
Swings his bat all the way around
The world’s so still you can hear the sound
The baseball falls to the ground

He makes no excuses, He shows no fears
He just closes his eyes and listens to the cheers
Little boy, he adjusts his hat
Picks up his ball, stares at his bat

Says I am the greatest the game is on the line
And he gives his all one last time
And the ball goes up like the moon so bright
Swings his bat with all his might

And the world’s so still as still can be
And the baseball falls, and that’s strike three
Now it’s supper time and his mama calls

Little boy starts home with his bat and ball
Says I am the greatest that is a fact
But even I didn’t know I could pitch like that

No, Chris. It has already emerged.

I religiously put fertilizer on my lawn five times per year: late winter, around May 1, around July 15, around September 15, and around December 1. The December feeding is “Scott’s Winterizer”. Well, I went walking around my yard today. Somehow, some rye seed found its way to part of my backyard. That stuff is about twelve inches tall. Another part of my yard is so completely full of weeds that you can’t see the dormant grass below. It is also about a foot tall. And the dandelions are enjoying the rest of my yard. Scott’s Winterizer. What’s in that stuff anyway? Fertilizer?

I’ve got good ol’ centipede. Don’t have to do much at all to it. I add lime about once a year to counteract all the pine straw. It has fared remarkably well during this drought.

Now more baseball… mark it down folks, this will be the year of the middle reliever. Holding a team scoreless in the 5th, 6th and 7th innings is the key to winning the majority of all baseball games. Why else would a walk off win mean so much? It doesn’t happen all that often, most games are lost in the middle innings.

    Clemens’ lobbying under scrutiny
    http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/39590

    Posted: Monday February 11, 2008 06:02AM ET

Over two days, late last week, Roger Clemens and Rusty Hardin stopped by the offices of members of Congress. And what a coincidence, the 19 they succeeded in chatting up are all on the committee that this Wednesday is assigned to pull from Clemens his sworn testimony on drug use.

Those who received Clemens, last week, who this Wednesday seem to “go easy” on him, will be regarded with great and deserved suspicion. And then there are those who received Clemens who may now be forced – for the sake of appearances – to cast him in a bad light.

How many put celebrity ahead of sense? How many personal autographs and photo poses did Clemens provide to Congressional members days before he sat before them? Why didn’t they refuse to meet with him at such an hour? Have they no sense of their positions? The issue? Have they no sense of common sense?

Though at least several of those Congressmen, including Brooklyn’s Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y), seemed swayed by their private time with Clemens – good grief, Towns’ deputy chief of staff posed for a picture with Clemens, his arm around her shoulder – all have created a public contamination of the process.

I will also allege under FRCP 11(b)(2), that said contentions are not warranted by existing law and are a frivolous argument for extending, modifying, or reversing existing law or for establishing new law.

I will also allege under FRCP 11(b)(3) that said factual contentions are lacking in evidentiary support and upon being so specifically identified, they will likely not have evidentiary support after a reasonable opportunity for further investigation or discovery; and

I will also allege against Paladin under FRCP 11(b)(4) that any subsequent denials of factual contentions by Paladin are not warranted on the evidence and upon being so specifically identified, are not reasonably based on belief or a lack of information.

DOes that work for you Uncle Paladin? See we can even teach you Civil Procedure on Carolina Lady’s blog. Should be alot funner than reading that horribly tedious material that you will entirely forget by the time you graduate and start practicing.

Actually the #11 was deported over the weekend. To further your analogy, the deportation process was not without resistance. I’ll spare you the details. ‘Nuff said on that subject.

Last night’s fare: Gorton’s Fish Portions, green beans and hush-puppies. (The raisinettes had Spaghetti-O’s.) Exactly what is in that mystery batter anyway.

See… batter… I’m trying to segue back into baseball.

Now… baseball. 2 days, 22 hours, 33 minutes until the official reporting time for pitchers and catchers in Orlando. (Orlando clearly stated without some obscure reference.)

    Quote of the day:

“We left last year on paper thinking it was going to be a pretty good team,” Smoltz said. “The problem was, if everything went right, it was going to be a pretty good team. But everything didn’t go right. Now, if everything doesn’t go right, we’ve still got options. “I don’t study other teams. I don’t know how many other teams have this many options. It still might mean enough wins to win a World Series. But we have a better chance this year than going into last year.”

Does this mean the Braves are installing the option into this years offense? Are they only going to run it right? Do they have enough speed and outside blocking to do that? Won’t the other teams catch onto that pretty quick? Wouldn’t a pro-style downfield passing attack work better against this division? So many questions…

VOR, I was hoping for some more play action out of the offense this year – like a bunt or two followed by a fake bunt or two followed by a deep ball into the bleachers. You gotta suck the D up and in towards the line of scrimmage so you can sneak the ball past the infield.

2007 options – Chuck James, Mike Hampton, Kyle Davies, Mark Redman, Buddy Carlyle, Lance Cormier

2008 options – Chuck James, Mike Hampton, Jair Jurrjens, JoJo Reyes, Buddy Carlyle, Jeff Bennett

I’m not sure the options are all that much better this year at the bottom end. Just different names mixed in with some of the old.

But that’s just me. We’ll see.

Also read somewhere that McCann had lasik surgery over the winter and he says he can see better than he ever has in his life. Could make a huge difference in his reaction time behind the plate. It certainly didn’t hurt Matt Diaz, did it? I just remember watching McCann squinting and blinking alot during his at-bats like my Papaw does when he’s trying to watch Andy Griffith. That’s gotta be a big disadvantage, I would think.

McCann worked with a trainer all winter doing strenth and flexibility work. When they were finished with that regimen, he took yoga to aid more with increased flexibility. He is supposedly in excellent shape. Francoeur went on a weight training regimen designed for pro athletes and added upper body strenth. Javy worked on flexibility, defense and slimmed down.

I’ve seen pictures of Frenchy and Javy and they look in real good shape. It would not surprise me if Javy won the backup job. It might give us some power when McCann gets a day a week off-which he needs. I think the Gwinnett All Stars are making a statement that they will work to get better. They both have a good work ethic.

Hey, want to have a really swell Valentines day?? Head to Kuwait or Saudi Arabia!!! Is there such a thing as a Valentine’s Grinch????

KUWAIT CITY — Valentine’s Day is just three days away, but one Muslim politician is heading up a committee to make sure it goes completely ignored.

Kuwaiti MP Waleed Al-Tabtabae, head of the National Assembly’s Committee Monitoring Negative Alien Practices, will chair his group Wednesday to discuss ways to repress all public displays recognizing the international day of love. “We want to discuss measures that should be taken by these ministries to prevent such alien events from impacting Kuwaiti society and spreading corruption among the Kuwaiti youth,” Al-Tabtabae told reporters Monday. …

Saudi Arabia, which had strongly condemned public Valentine’s Day celebrations, has eased its ban, allowing the sale of cards and candy, but still prohibiting public exhibitions of affection.

I knew there was an underlying reason I liked you guys so much … my birthday is in March, too, the 11th, to be exact …

Now, Javy: Talked to somebody yesterday who is pretty close to the team. I asked this person about Javy specifically. I was told Javy looks super, best he’s looked in years, and this person thinks he’s got a heckuva shot to make the team. Now, I do, too …

Now, pitching: Talked to a buddy of mine in South Georgia today. Told him I think Jurrjens wins the fourth spot if Hampton can’t go and Jurrjens has a good spring. If Hampton’s healthy? Let’s just say Chuck darn well better have a third pitch working and his shoulder better be strong.

Smoltz, Hudson and Glavine last year combined: 43 wins, 630.1 innings pitched, average ERA of 3.63. Now, all of you good people certainly would take that from the top three again this year, right?

Some other numbers from my conversation with my buddy about the pitching staff:

    — Bravos’ staff ERA of 4.11 last year was third-best in the NL.

    — Bully ERA of 3.54 was second in NL.

    — Moylan’s ERA of 1.80 was best in the majors for those with 90-plus innings.

    — Jurrjens’ career numbers in the minors: 503.1 innings pitched, 121 walks, 404 strikeouts. And yes, this guy can throw three pitches for strikes, including a fastball topping out at 94. He would’ve been in the Tigers’ rotation had he not been traded, and even with their deal for Willis … guys, I think he’s going to make the team.

    — He wasn’t ready for the bigs last year and that was apparent in his first handful of starts. But starting with a strong outing in late August in St. Louis against Adam Wainwright, the pride of St. Simons Island, one young Jo-Jo Reyes went 2-1 in his final five starts and lowered his ERA in each outing, allowing just nine runs over 26.1 innings with 19 strikeouts.

    — Think Manny Acosta won’t be big this year? As a rookie, he posted a 2.28 ERA and was deadly against right-handers, who hit 4-for-43 against him. Team him with Moylan and you’ve got one great set-up duo for Soriano.

    — Will Ohman was horrible at Wrigley Field during his career with the Cubs, leading to bloated numbers. Away from the Friendly Confines? Awesome. Ohman, the veteran lefty presence the Braves needed, has a career ERA of 2.32 and opponents are hitting just .192 against him in games not played at the old ballpark on Addison.

Now, Hillbilly: Got your note. I actually talked to your buddy once; covered a game for them about a year and a half ago on a freelance basis. From what I’ve heard, he’s done a real good job for them, and that makes me happy. I know a couple of folks there because I worked there back in the day, and poured my heart and soul into that section for several years. Loved every single second of it, too, so I think fondly of them and wish them only the absolute best.

It’s cool you know somebody there. Small world.

Evening y’all… Folks should remember one very important fact when it comes to pitchers slated to make the team this year. Chuck James and Jurrjens have something that Boyer and Bennett don’t have…. Options…. Unless they are lights out head and shoulders above other pitchers trying to make it out of spring training, those two will be part of the Richmond Braves farewell tour this year.

Atlanta is not going to let guys just get snatched up. A trade may be in the offering but the days when a guy was told he had a sore shoulder and then stashed on the DL are over.

April 15 for me. Uncle Sam is nice enough to remind me it is more blessed to give than receive each year….

Gil, I think you may be right about James and Jurrjens, provided everyone else is healthy, of course.

Thanks for the tip about the Rocker article on MSNBC.

    From the article:

Rocker said that doctors from management and the players’ association, following a spring training talk with the Texas Rangers about steroids and other topics, pulled himself, A-Rod, Rafael Palmeiro and Ivan Rodriguez aside. Rocker was with the Rangers in 2002.

“Looks guys, if you take one kind of steroid, you don’t triple stack them and take them 10 months out of the year like Lyle Alzado did,” Rocker said the doctors told them. “If you do it responsibly, it’s not going to hurt you.”

Granted, Rocker isn’t the most reliable source, but for him to say that “doctors from management and the players association” advised them on how to use steroids properly is a pretty damning insinuation.

Gil, you are right about Rocker. But I think the court of public opinion doesn’t give Rocker a tremendous amount of credibility.

Frankly, I always liked Rocker. I thought he got caught up in a situation that he had no business being in. SI set him up and knocked him down. He came off looking like an ignorant racist, making Southerners in general look bad. When the SI article came out, I imagined myself in his shoes. Young, ignorant to the ways of the world, on top of the world. When I was his age, I was ten feet tall and bullet proof and I always suspected he felt the same way. Didn’t know enough to keep his mouth shut in front of a reporter.

As you said, he was never accused of being a liar, just stupid. And that is why the court of public opinion will discount whatever he says.

By the way, between the Rocker article and the “David Wells is Fat” article, I decided to discontinue my subscription to SI. Never read another issue.

Also glad to hear good reports on Javy. He may not hit as many dingers as he once did but quite frankly, I don’t think anyone is going to hit all that many anymore.

The glaring weakness for the Braves for several years now has been the fact that once on base, opposing players can steal literally at will against the Braves battery. I can remember watching Javy just flat miss catching balls just out of the strike zone. For McCann it will be to get away from the tendency to tray to pancake balls thrown in the dirt verses blocking them with his body. Yes, they hurt but he is a catcher…. he is suppose to catch them behind the plate, not play them off the backstop.

Everyone of the writers are under pressure to get the “exclusive” and darn few care what damage they do to other folks reputations. The Jerry Springer in your face style of reporting has taken over the media. We could use the term yellow journalism to good effect I would think.

The movie “North Dallas Forty” I think hit the nail on the head when they depicted the character of pro sports. The message is “it’s okay to cheat, it’s not okay to get caught….

Smoltz, Hudson and Glavine last year combined: 43 wins, 630.1 innings pitched, average ERA of 3.63. Now, all of you good people certainly would take that from the top three again this year, right?

Good question Scribe … good post too!

Actually I think their combined ERA was more like 3.56 but methinks Glavine’s 4.45 is not what he would have liked.

I find it hard to evaluate pitchers just in terms of ERA and wins and I would hope we get better from our top 3 than they performed last year … but I would probably say that, regardless of how they performed … I like improvement … though not always a reasonable expectation.

Trooper and fine competitor that he was and is, John struggled much of the year with nagging ailments … still had a 3.11 ERA … but they have their cumulative affect and effect; above and below the neck … and it is, at least to some extent residual, from year to year … let’s hope for the best … maybe we can reduce the stress somewhat … be sneaky and match him up against some number 3, 4, and 5 starters when folks ain’t looking.

Tommy started well with a 2.80 (3-1) in April, followed by 4.03, 5.83, 5.14, 3.13, and 6.10 in the subsequent months … I doubt he liked the trend any more that the 4.45, especially the 6.10 coming when it mattered most… I know I wouldn’t … he too is a year older with possible lingering above the neck problems as a result of his September fade.

Tim also started well with a lights out 1.40 (3-0) in April, followed by 4.35, 4.15, 2.76, 4.26, and 3.38.

We’re all Braves fans and hope like heck … or is it Sam Hill … that they have minimal problems … them and old Mike; Chipper and that new boy in Center too! If they do, we’ll be tough as nails … especially if the rest of the team performs perform close to expectations and young Mike does well when he returns. Infante should be a serious bench upgrade and Javy’s presence could prove decisive.

Ohman will be interesting too, that’s for sure … there are all kinds of splits that give surprising results for players … methinks the best thing to do is just to watch him pitch and see for ourselves … unless of course you’re in Nashville and can only afford to listen … let Shaun Payne worry about the numbers. Of course, that split may reflect that he just plays better away from home where the self imposed pressure is less … not just at Wrigley, and that would be a bummer.

No, I’m not Nathan … I agree with John in thinking that we have better options this year … and like our chances. I think the keys to success are in the hands of 3 people … Manager, pitching coach and hitting coach … but I’ve said that before.

I share that hope and and obviously the concern. I’m also concerned with young Chuck … not because of his needed third pitch and his “too consistent” predictable approach ’cause, he’ll most likely figure those things out … and part of it may be our catcher is too predictable … but, I’m just a little uneasy about his current state of health … at a time when he feels compelled to compete for his position.

    flb,
I kinda hope Jurrjens makes it as well. We traded a lot for him….not the best reason to have someone in the rotation, but as good a reason as the guy makes 12 million(or whatever it is) We do need youth. He may be so youthful that we have to watch his innings…and I believe that is going to be an issue this year. Can’t have Smoltz or Glavine going too far into games, and Hampton has to be babied. So, that leaves Hudson and Jo-Jo(If he is the 5th guy) or just Hudson if it’s Jurrjens.
I hope we do go with a 5 1/2 or 6 man rotation…but I don’t know if it really will happen. Sounds like Boston has changed their mind on a 6 man rotation…

Bob, good point about competing for a slot….He hasn’t even had to worry about that the last two years, now he won’t want to lose it….they should have him on a different schedule, even telling him he won’t be in the rotation for the first month or so no matter what, so he won’t push it….I don’t know how much of it is the camera angle, but he sure does seem to throw across his body, doesn’t he???

I’m quite nervous about Chucky’s shoulder, since we were assured it was a “slight” tear & would be healed in time for ST. As it is still causing him discomfort, I’d say that someone on the medical staff did not do their job adequately. I just keep expecting to hear that he’ll need surgery & will be out for months. Hope I’m wrong about that!

and this thought which I will forget if I don’t write it for the ages now…
You mentioned Mark Wohlers a few days ago. I remember Bobby saying that Leo had never seen anyone who could warm up as fast as him. That he would throw something like 10 pitches and be ready. And my thought when I heard that…he will have a short career. If I was a pitching coach, it would be a very slow warm up for bullpen folks. Perhaps even a heating pad on the arm to keep the muscles warm and loose. but hey, those arms are only worth 10’s of millions of dollars, and pennants hang in the balance of their health, why worry??? Might as well race the cold engine in your car as well, it will give you heat faster if you do that you know….

Gill, I agree on Rocker … I believe he believed in what he said … and a lot of folks were agreed, at least directionally … but the Jack, Most Honorable is right too … he’s proven himself not to be the brightest apple in the barrel. I was there the day Javy dropped a third strike that would have ended the game … a comeback win against Randy (Big U) … instead, Rocker imploded, we lost the game and then he exploded … that’s when my attitude began to shift about him.

It’s a team game … you win together and lose together … but not John Rocker and he made no bones about it. Lot’s of them talk the “team” talk but I wonder how many really walk that walk … many of the veteran, before Madonna players appear not to so do … hard to tell cause’ they know which side of the bread is buttered and sprinkled with sugar too.

Top of the morning, everyone. Gotta run quickly here, but in glancing over the posts last night and this morning, and after some thinking as I tried to sleep last night …

    — On Chuck: It’s hard to look at a guy who’s won 11 games in each of his first two big-league seasons and question whether or not he’ll make the team. But I’m telling you this: He better be healthy and he better have a third pitch to rely upon or else I’m not sure he’s going to be in D.C. with the big-league squad March 30. Both of those factors led to opponents lighting him up like the Fourth of July in the middle innings (third time through the order), hence why he didn’t see the seventh inning too often.

Chuck’s game is deception. His delivery is tricky for hitters to read. A third pitch and a strong shoulder and he absolutely deserves to be in the big leagues. But if — and again, I say it’s a big if — but IF Hampton is healthy, it’s going to be quite a dogfight for the last spot. Jurrjens has tremendous upside and if he can pitch well in camp, he’s going to go north. He got his baptism by fire in the bigs last summer with Detroit. He absolutely can help this team.

On the last two spots in the rotation: Mark Redman and Kyle Davies had no business being in the majors last April, and yet there they were, pitching in the fourth and fifth spots by default after Hampton was lost and Cormier (who had the best spring of any Braves’ pitcher) got hurt in his last spring start. Take Hampton out of the mix, and you’ve got Jurrjens, James, Bennett and Reyes for the final two spots. Much better options this time around.

On Reyes: I still say he’s got the stuff to eventually be a No. 2 starter in the majors, and he started to find his confidence and the strike zone in his final five starts. I don’t think he’ll make the team, and that’s OK. He should go to Richmond and build on his success from the end of last year. in the long run, that’s going to make him a better pitcher, and the Braves NEED him in 2009. I’m not sure they need him in 2008.

On Bennett: IF Hampton can’t go, I think he’s going to make the team if he can pitch consistently in camp. He pitched well in his three starts at the end of the season, and pitched well in winter ball. He can be effective either as a starter or a reliever, and I think you’ll see him in both roles this season.

As for the mental carryover from last year for Smoltz and/or Glavine, I think both guys will be motivated. Glavine didn’t pitch well in his final three starts, but he carried the Mets in the two months before that. I think he’s going to win 10-12 games and have an ERA around 4 and pitch 200 innings. If he does that, and if Smoltz and Hudson replicate last year’s numbers (generally speaking), this team is going to be just fine, especially with a solid bullpen where roles are defined already and the aforementioned depth in the back end of the starting rotation.

Smoltz and Hudson felt like they absolutely could not lose a game for the vast majority of the summer. That stress now is gone, with Glavine in the third spot and better choices for fourth and fifth. Certainly they still want to win every time out, but they won’t have the pressure of feeling like the two of them are carrying the entire burden this time around.

    Gotta run.

    The Scribe abides.

Boyer/Bennett will be a battle. IIRC, both are out of options, so one could be traded during spring. There are many battles this spring for rotation and pen spots. I hope Boyer is finally healthy and able to contribute. It’d be nice to see this kid that we’ve been looking at for several years to finally break out. That being said, if Bennett has the better spring… Sentiment is one thing; superior bullpen is another.

Maybe they should have tried being nice to the guy. I complemented him on a very nice game he pitched earlier in the week. Maybe other journalists should have tried a favorable comment. Worked for me.

    Feb 33, huh? Ooooookay! 🙂

Read not long ago that someone’s wife was extolling the virtues of Dollar General because “you don’t have to get all dressed up like you do to go to Wal*Mart.” 😆

I think part of the problem is that so many people obviously don’t have mirrors. Should be a campaign to put at least one in every home! Beautify America!

Read that the Saudis have banned anything RED being sold. Valentine’s Day celebration is a sin, say they. Celebrates love and friendship. ‘Nuf said about them. 🙂

There is a local grocery store that is mostly populated by mouth-breathers; I try to avoid it if I can. (They do have good meats, though; maybe fresh kill?) We do have a brand new Kroger that is sucking the life out of the other local options…

He better be healthy and he better have a third pitch to rely upon or else I’m not sure he’s going to be in D.C … Scribe on Chuck James.

Bud, I know you were suggesting the competition was going to be stiff. I hope you’re right but regardless, you won’t get any argument from me and I don’t you’ll get much argument from anyone else on that … not unless he’s being traded to the Nats!

From a different perspective, for anyone who wasn’t healthy to make that trip sounds ill advised, regardless of whom it might be. I think Chuck’s shoulder is of greater concern than a 3rd, 4th, or 10th pitch … but certainly something that reacts differently than his others would be very useful … I get the impression that he probably has such a pitch … if only he would allow himself to be comfortable with it.

Much of Chuck’s success will certainly depend on deception … but I think that can be said of most starters … his .611 ain’t bad … better than Nolan Ryan’s .526 which methinks would have benefited by more deception.

  460. 471 Bob, journalist February 12, 2008 at 10:35 pm

    Hi FBG!

I actually did have some problems earlier … wrote the above earlier and lost my connection before I could post. Here’s what was mind triggered by the “deception” reference when I read what I had written … and just completed when I got back on line … you can read it while I have a late supper.

I think the Braves’ success as a team depends on deception … it’s important for all of our pitchers, from John and Tim … all the way down the line … and we have seen the fourth, third and even second time “through the order” problems plague them all … in different ways and at different times, especially the talented youngsters.

When it happens, we hear “mistake”, “lost focus”, “tired”, “injury” and “needs another pitch” … there’s always an excuse or rationalization … but some are valid reasons … like “he ain’t no good”.

Things that our pitchers have in common are the manager, pitching coach, and catcher … methinks all have something to do with the pitcher’s success … regardless of what others might think or consider.

Some may recall when I asked David O’Brien about the role of the catcher in calling the game, which I assumed, and continue to assume, is a function of the experience level of both pitcher and catcher … and the pitcher’s psyche.

Make no mistake, I like Brian McCann … a lot!

It was an honest question, but, perhaps because of my earlier posture regarding young Brian’s long term contract, David evidently assumed my inquiry was agenda motivated and intended to reflect negatively on McCann … I considered his non-responsive response to be flippant … so I still don’t have the answer.

Thus it is from considerable ignorance that I speak but I feel that the catcher certainly influences the pitcher deception and effectiveness … both by design and unwittingly. I assume that both pitcher and catcher spend considerable time throughout the season so as to be on the same page … each knows the other’s strengths and weaknesses … and that there is significant game specific preparation.

I have always thought that the veteran pitchers probably dominate the game calling process, with the roles reversing as the level of experience diminishes, but since it seems relatively rare that pitchers waive off signs, I suspect the game calling role of the catcher may be greater than formally imagined. I truly wish that I knew more about the process … for I think a greater level of responsibility for the success of the pitcher, especially during the second and later times through the lineup, rests with the catcher than is generally imagined.

Certainly, regardless of the process, a pitcher’s utilization and success with certain pitches … such as the knuckleball and split finger fastball … are influenced by the catcher’s abilities in handling such pitches … if the catcher can’t handle it, it’s best you not throw it in critical situations.

The catcher’s adroitness in positioning himself so as not to reveal the called for pitch position is also of vital importance.

While how a batter is pitched is situation specific, there are ten games going on, the one we see and nine others between the hitters and the battery. So, how a batter is pitched also depends on how he was pitched in his previous turns, and the intended approach for future ones. Methinks how well the battery considers subsequent at bats when pitching the current one has an significant impact on the pitcher’s success during those subsequent ones … yes, methinks the one calling the game should be setting up the batter in the first for how he plans to pitch to him in the eighth or ninth … and how well that’s done helps determine the outcome of the send, third and fourth times through the order.

How our pitchers perform as the game progresses has always been, and will always be is, important … but it gets more attention when there are problems. Certainly, the pitcher’s control and arsenal receive the most attention as they are the most visible of the components of a complex dynamic … but success demands that all of the components are working efficiently and in concert.

When we consider the catcher’s defensive skill set, we automatically think of the ability to minimize passed balls, block the plate, frame pitches, and throw out runners … they’re highly visible and important. Perhaps not as visible but maybe even more important are how well he handles his role in the game calling process, influences the pitcher’s confidence and in-game emotions, and recognizes both the quality level of the pitches and the pitcher’s energy expenditure rate.

I think it’s impossible to properly evaluate the performance of our pitchers in a vacuum, especially the youngsters. They’re talented or they wouldn’t be here … how they do is greatly influenced by the manager, pitching coach, and catcher … more than we think and maybe sometimes more than their talent.

Hi, Bob! While I am certainly no expert I’ve heard that the pitchers really like Mac’s game-calling. That was one of the things Smoltz praised when Brian was first called up. That said, I’m sure that experience strengthens that aspect of a catcher’s game.

I can understand deadlines and the need to prioritize and the other post was a little longer and more detailed … it’s not important, but it wouldn’t have taken much more time or effort to copy and paste … maybe 30 seconds total, assuming 20 for opening a new browser and locating the other entry … negative extra time, if you knew you were going so do while you still had it open.

Maybe a minute or two total, to retype the original essence from memory, if you’re slow like me.

Have a good trip, don’t drink the water, and stay safe!

From one non-expert to another, I’ve heard the same thing … and I heard John’s comments too … and my comments were not intended to otherwise suggest … and I truly do like him. He gives the best he has, methinks.

He will, if he isn’t already, be a superior catcher … of that I’m sure for that’s his approach to whatever he chooses to do.

I’m just saying it’s part of the mix and shouldn’t be disregarded or minimized in the evaluation process.

That said, were I a member of the pitching staff and asked by the media what I thought of our new catcher … I think response would have been similar, regardless of what I thought … so doing serves many good purposes. But, like Brian said, when catching Smoltz … just sit back and enjoy the ride … my words, not his … but the meaning was the same.

Braves’ management likes him too …

To say that I truly don’t understand the process is one of the few absolute truths to flow from my brain to the Blog … another is that something’s burning on the stove.

Berigan, one’s biological clock being mad as in ticked? Seems like the trend … I understand that over the last 30 years birth rates have increased about 50% for men over 30 while births involving men under 30 have declined. Sounds good on the surface until you consider that the incidence of schizophrenia and autism in babies increases sharply as the father’s age increases.

Might explain some of the behavior among athletes … and bloggers.

Do you think we could predict the father’s age at the blogger’s birth, based on the behavioral patterns and posted content? Maybe we could get a government grant to find out.

My goodness Berigan, I hope this no sleep thing is not contagious. However, looks like I caught it as I have only managed a couple of hours tonight. I feel like I have been beat to a pulp but every time I try to lie down, my legs hurt so badly I have to get back up again. AAAGGGHHHH!!!!!

The traveling circus of politics has moved on to greener pastures. Now, Ringling Bros. will soon be making their way north. The Richmond Coliseum will reek for months following their stay. Always has in the past. It will be rather odorific from the animals too… 🙂

My mother’s birthday is today, 89 and becoming ever the more demanding. CL… I can appreciate your travails, mine are not quite as bad as we have been able to hire nurses to come in and lighten the burden. I can understand her anger and depression as she is still a young woman in her own mind, trapped in an old and feeble body.

She is still a big fan of baseball and is a keen judge of talent. Actually, she roots for Baltimore more than the Braves but still she will root for those Braves she remembers. She says Javy is going to make a big comeback this year.

Longevity runs on both sides of my family with my dad being an exception. Testament that smoking cigarettes and exposure to industrial chemicals can be a deadly combination. Most everyone seems to make it into their 90’s with one aunt living to the ripe old age of 106. I shudder to think I will have to endure this much pain for another 50 years.

On a much lighter note, Bob appears to be particularly spry tonight. T’is scary that I understand him more every day. My dad was 38 when I was conceived. I am not sure if his age had anything to do with my condition but looking back I can say I suffered (not sure that is the correct word) from ADD and dyslexia as a child and sometimes will slip into bad habits when I am not careful. All and all, I think I did well enough. Not the same level to which my brother ascended but I think I am a heck of a lot happier.

And Chris…. Loved the squirrel picture. One species you have in South Carolina and Georgia that we do not have in Virginia is the Black squirrel. I have some photos of several I spotted while playing golf in MB… Pretentious critters and surely no less crafty than the gray verity we have here.

Also a beautiful photos of your family. I suppose I should post snaps of my kids but I am not sure CL has enough space on her blog. 🙂

JJS…. Who is the fellow playing the piano you posted?

gil, that is no piano . . . that is the famous hammond b-3 organ with jimmy smith at the keyboard. and this journalist also is beginning to understand journalist bob’s posts . . . remarkable. and jimmy smith is searching for an appropriate red-eared slider photo for jimmy smith’s photo page. and would that not be the perfect 3rd pitch for chuck james? a red-eared slider? mcdowell can teach such a pitch? maybe chino? or would chino ingest the red-eared slider? many questions. and someone’s birthday is missing . . .

and will lew receive an autograph from chipper jones upon presentation of the deere painting? and will it be on lew’s hide? and will chipper make use of a sharpie? and won’t that be a throw-away sharpie from that point forward? and what if grinch gets there first and tells chipper that grinch is lew hartman? and grinch gets the autograph instead of lew. many possibilities here. many, many possibilities.

Gil, sorry to hear your having sleep trouble again! 😦 Pain is a…you know what…I mention obvious things sometimes. Most of the time, people have already tried what I mention, but just in case….do you sleep on your side, or your back??? I used to be only able to sleep on my back, with nothing under my legs. Then, A pillow just under my knees. Now, the only way I can sleep, is on my left side, with a pillow under my knees, and between my ankles. A pain when getting out of bed, but I am tellin’ ya, makes a big difference for me at least, to have my whole body horizontal…..

And I assume you know there is a Mechanicsville GA as well as VA??? I think I mentioned before I was aware you weren’t quite as close as I thought you were about some spinal place that does a lot of traction type work on backs.
Funny, when I hurt my back for the second time in ’05 and could barely walk, all I could think was after seeing their ads on TV, I’ve had traction before, it didn’t do much if anything for me the last time. Well, it appears they do some different motions, etc these days with the machines. I think I mentioned before that while I don’t think my Dad’s back is as bad as yours, he is 76, with a bulging disc, and bad arthritis in his back. In fact, they say the arthritis is more the culprit than the disc in his pain. He was getting worse and worse, couldn’t stand for any length of time, taking pain pills to sleep…but, after going to physical therapy for about 6 weeks, it started to get better. He can sleep without pain pills, and can stand at least for short periods of time. He is still going twice a week…I think he is afraid to stop…plus, he likes chatting with the ladies there! 😉
Anyway, don’t let one or two doctors tell you that if they can’t fix you with a knife, pain pills are the only solution! Not that I am against them, I just know that when the pain gets bad enough, they don’t really work, do they???
The other thing I can’t recall if I mentioned before, was pain med pumps. They get the pain meds where they need to be, your back(IF it ever gets to that point, something to keep in the back of your mind!)
I saw a discovery show, or something like them talking about people with chronic pain. This thin middle aged woman had just terrible back pain, even after back surgery. She could hardly walk, sit, or sleep. They put one on her, and she was able to lead a fairly normal life! I think she was even able to garden again, something she thought she would never do again!
I sound like my Mom nagging, sorry! But, even stupid sounding treatments(to us) might make a difference……

And Gil, you had ADD as well??? Was it diagnosed, or did you just look back and see the problem??? I was never diagnosed but, clearly I had it. I was one of those kids that had lots of potential, so said the teachers….I am not a big fan of giving every Tom, Dick, and Harry Ritalin, but I wish I could go back in time, and try it….I really liked to stare out the window and tune out teacher…maybe I just had a lot of really boring teachers though!

read what duff wilson has to say:
    February 13, 2008
Clemens Autograph Seekers May Have Broken Federal Law
    By DUFF WILSON
WASHINGTON — Any members of the House oversight committee or their staff who asked Roger Clemens for an autograph during his tour of the Capitol over the past week might have violated a federal law against soliciting things of value from people with interests before the committee, several lawyers with expertise in Congressional ethics laws said.

In addition, if a staff member or a member of the committee had Clemens autograph a baseball, that would apparently violate a House ethics ban against taking a gift valued at more than $50, the lawyers said.

Clemens’s entourage here said he autographed scores of items Thursday and Friday while visiting 19 of the 40 members of the committee, which is set to take his testimony Wednesday. Clemens and his lawyers were back Tuesday, visiting more committee members in advance of the public hearing.

“They shouldn’t have been asking him to autograph things because no matter what it’s worth, there’s a prohibition against soliciting gifts of any value,” said Bernadette Sargeant, a lawyer in Washington who worked as counsel for the House Ethics Committee until late 2004.

“You’re definitely not supposed to do it if it’s linked to any action you’re taking or being asked to take,” she said in a telephone interview. “That’s a problem if he’s going around meeting with members of the House oversight committee.”

now, did clemens sign anybody’s hide? and how will these autographs be returned? and wouldn’t just about anybody in washington know that the courtesy calls were inappropriate? clemens and clemens’ attorney included? and was this a set-up?

investigative reporter chop seal will have more on this later. right now, chop seal is hitch-hiking to orlando (dressed as a small braves fan). braves and stuff needs to put in place a travel allowance for its beet writer.

    My kitty joke:

A kindergarten pupil told his teacher that he had found a cat, but it was dead. “How do you know it was dead?” she asked. Because I #@*%!ed in its’ ear and it didn’t move. “You did what?!?”, the teacher exclaimed. “You know”, explained the boy, “I leaned over and went “Pssst!” and it didn’t move.
