“Sweet dreams are born inside you.

Sweet dreams are born to last.

Sweet thoughts within your makeup;

These thoughts will always last.”

from Sweet Dreams by Yes, from Time and a Word (1970)

JEFFERSON, GA – As I sit to organize my thoughts, my mind is constantly aware that today is the first day of full squad workouts for my beloved Braves at Champion Field in the Den of Disney. Although I am the consummate compulsive multi-tasker, I find that I am having a great deal of difficulty peeling my thoughts away from what is surely Paradise in the heart of The Big Mouse. You see, there is one constant peril in the routine of the compulsive multi-tasker: daydreaming.

Daydreaming can upset the balance of a carefully crafted groove, a perfected program, an unspoiled scheme, a mastered modus operandi.

I daydream of all the sights and sounds that go along with a day at the ballpark. I cannot escape the fact that as I sit and navigate the water that is my daily duties, my beloved Braves are cranking up the machine that is the 2008 campaign. Ah, yes… Here in late winter, the Boys of Summer open their Spring Training. And I find my thoughts constantly drawn to this seasonal paradox. I can’t shake it. It is an imagination addiction.

A daydream is a wistfully pleasant visual vacation. It is a creation of the imagination with one sole purpose: escape from reality. In fact, it is in and of itself its own reality complete with a symphony of sensory delights. And I daydream of being there – there in the middle of the Disney juggernaut in a small piece of heaven that is a baseball park.

I hear the pop of freshly oiled leather. I hear the crack of white ash, as the bat meets the ball in a perfect union of two bodies in motion.

I hear the kids playing on the grass just outside the outfield fence. I hear the birds overhead, packed and ready for the journey northward.

I hear the ooohs and ahhhs as the hitters launch their rockets from home plate. I hear Bobby yelling, “Come on, Kid!”

I smell the freshly cut infield grass. I smell the popcorn popping in the vendor’s wagon just outside the gate. I smell the SPF 50 from the Vermont vacationers.

I see the players, playing a boy’s game with a man’s skill. I see the sun and the shadows painting the field with their contrasting ideas. I see the fans milling about, each with their own contrasting ideas.

I see that glorious “A”, gracing the brow of the caps worn by my beloved Braves. (I’m wearing one, too!)

I feel the warmth of the Florida sun. I feel the anticipation of fulfilling a dream. I feel the excitement of new opportunity. I feel the tension of jobs on the line. I feel the joy of simply being in the midst of it all.

And I can taste it, just as nourishment for the soul as it all comes together in the perfect recipe that is my daydream.

Yes, this dream is born inside me, indeed. It lasts from spring to new spring and is surely a part of what makes me who I am. No, I’ve never been to spring training, at least not yet. But, I can dream, can’t I?

Raisins; My daydreams are a little more base. I dream of a time in yesteryear when I spent 2 weeks in Palma De Malloca while my aircraft was AOCPAP(aircraft out of commission awaiting parts). After dutifully checking each morning to see that the parts had not arrived, I then went to the beaches, cafes, etc. to acquaint myself with local culture in this blue-collar vacation haven for Europe, particularly Scandinavia. At night, I would put my research to work. It was a tough assignment, but someone had to do it. Now, pardon me while I return to my dreams.

My Grandson sent me some jokes having to do with young children. Since most of you either have young children or grandchildren, I’ll share some with you from time to time.

A man and his wife were driving with their 3 small children on a warm night when the woman in a convertible ahead of them stood up and was completely naked. The couple cringed as they awaited the reaction of the children. Then, the five-year-old said, “Look Mom, that woman isn’t wearing a seat belt.”

    BrAKing NeWs:
German Police Dogs to Wear Shoes

    Feb 25, 8:40 AM (ET)

BERLIN (AP) – Police dogs in the western city of Duesseldorf will no longer get their feet dirty when on patrol – the entire dog unit will soon be equipped with blue plastic fiber shoes, a police spokesman said Monday.

“All 20 of our police dogs – German and Belgian shepherds – are currently being trained to walk in these shoes,” Andre Hartwich said. “I’m not sure they like it, but they’ll have to get used to it.”

The unusual footwear is not a fashion statement, Hartwich said, but rather a necessity due to the high rate of paw injuries on duty. Especially in the city’s historical old town – famous for both its pubs and drunken revelers – the dogs often step into broken beer bottles.

“Even the street-cleaning doesn’t manage to remove all the glass pieces from between the streets’ cobble stones,” Hartwich said, adding that the dogs frequently get injured by little pieces sticking deep in their paws.

The dogs will start wearing the shoes this spring but only during operations that demand special foot protection. The shoes comes in sizes small, medium and large and were ordered in blue to match the officers uniforms, Hartwich said.

“Now we just have to teach the dogs how to tie their shoes,” he joked.

Hey Jefferson, Ga … you know any nutty people from over there who might have been freshmen at the North Avenue Trade School ’56-57 … can’t remember any names off the top of my head, though one is on the tip of my tongue, who was also on Cloudman’s 3rd … and, if memory serves we had more than one … borrowed a vile of concentrated Nitric acid from the Lab he did … and I converted some copper pennies to dimes … he took one home with him for the weekend … stuck it in a juke box … “stuck” is the right word … played music all night on that penny and then hit the coin return and got it back.

The project had great potential but one of the Jefferson gang got greedy and put three in a cigarette machine on the dorm’s first floor … pack of Camels and a nickel change … but an official looking note was promptly attached to the machine, purportedly from the GBI … put an end to our chemistry research project before I was able to enjoy any of the benefits but I can still close my eyes and see that dark emerald gas.

Serious Sam Nunn had warned us that we’d get into trouble and I wouldn’t put it past him to have faked that note or ratted, but it sure did look official … no matter, the statute of limitations for counterfeiting dimes is less than 50 years.

We expected jail or worse for him … but he returned safe and sound that night.

Looking for a baseball connection … the end of the line where he spent the most time was the entrance to Ponce De Leon Park, home of the Crackers.

I don’t remember him being racist … said he just didn’t like “yankees” telling him what to do.

Don’t give up Steve … but you won’t find anything … I made all that stuff up about the GBI … simple misdirection … it was the FBI … and I really remember the old boy’s name who got the Camels too.

Maybe I was … but I ain’t admitting nothing! However, “was” means back then … “is” means now … I’ve reformed!

I can’t see what the big deal is … even an honorable Senator has kept the secret all these years. It was a tightly held, classified experiment secret so I doubt Dews knew of it, but I’m sure Sam would validate my story, unless he’s plans for the Presidency … which I wish he had.

Goodness, it was just a simple chemistry experiment … of course countersinking them holes in that board, took some time and precision, especially the smaller hole … it had to be exactly the size of a dime … so that the coins would fall into the water at just the right time.

I was just an eager student … an unwitting dupe … I can’t even remember how them hooligans did all that stuff, but somehow it worked!

Well Steve, no reason to be sorry, I freely admit that all of my messages are intended to depend of the definitions of the words I use.

At first, I thought it was good that the writer’s strike over so that you could watch Hollywood’s version of The Kellys … now I’m not so sure.

Can you imagine a bunch of overpaid actors not being to ad lib while they open envelopes and read the name of the winners?

I admit that I didn’t know any of the winners and few of the nominees … but what an inspiring Best Picture … No Country For Old Men … an appropriate title …

When Llewellyn Moss comes upon a corpse-strewn drug-deal-gone-wrong in the middle of the barren West Texas range, he takes the bag of cash he finds at the scene and soon draws the attention of the county sheriff investigating the crime. Sheriff Bell will become Llewellyn’s best hope for survival, however, when he finds himself the object of a relentless pursuit by hired killer Anton Chigurh, a murderous sociopath.

Sounds uplifting … maybe has some instructional value too … well it won the Oscar … but, don’t think it would rate “the Kelly”

If that was the best picture, what was the worst?

A big howdy to Mrs. Gil … and a fine tribe it is you have too. For a union man to live in the heart of the Confederacy … and raise such a brood without anybody getting wise … that’s quite a feat … figure you had a lot to do with that. Folks in Lawrenceville want to know when y’all plan on moving down?

I think most of us are not crazy about specialized stats(as I believe VOR called them earlier, boutique stats!) but look at these numbers for player X from last year. In 412 AB’s player X hit 21 HR’s and drove in 92 RBIs. Used to be if an outfielder drove in 92 in 600 ab’s that was good. but read what the guy who runs http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ said about player X

Jon Heyman talked to _________s agent, who indicated that ______ is intent on finding a near full-time offer. _____ hit .252/.311/.468 last year, earning $1.85MM. Baseball Prospectus’ PECOTA system sees a .256/.327/.470 line in 282 plate appearances this year, worth about $3MM.

____splits indicate he should be playing part time: .328/.410/.613 against lefties, .222/.267/.410 against righties.

The player is Sosa. isn’t it interesting that his 21Hr’s and 92 RBI’s aren’t even mentioned? All the teams that really needed a left fielder, and no mention of him for the job…..

I just know in the time it took me to look up his stats, and write this out…flb will be deep into a book….

The description is enough for me to know that I don’t want to see that movie. Sounds terrible. The best movie I’ve seen recently is one that apparently no one else watched, “Stardust”. It’s a sword-&- spell-fantasy type movie, which is very much my taste. My sister, however, is not normally interested in that style at all, was dubious about watching it with me and wound up really enjoying it. Robert DeNiro is particularly good in it.

Anyhoo, Hampton looked good throwing bp yesterday. Pendleton is noticeably smaller (and I got his autograph). Francouer is noticeably bigger (standing side-by-side with Tex, he looked like the one we ought to be trying harder to sign). McCann looks in better shape and definitely has the strongest and most accurate throwing arm among the catchers who practiced (Lopez, Flowers, Sammons, Miller). Also noteworthy: Brandon Jones nowhere to be seen (Lew says he hasn’t been seen yet at any time) and Josh Johnson getting a whole heck of a lot of work. Hmmmm….. Got some photos; I’ll send them to you tonight, CL. Having a nasty hangover, almost all of them are from one seat. Most are of Katy Temple’s behind (she came out for about 20 minutes), and the behind of the girl who took the photos for the AJC (she got down in some interesting positions). However, there are some of the players as well. Even one of a certain beet writer riding Bobby around in a golf cart. Time to shower and get ready; I’ll check back in tonight.

I am a huge fan of John Wayne (of course), Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, anything Hitchcock, and last but not least Bogart. That is certainly not a complete list, either.

Having small kids, most of the new movies I catch are family friendly. In fact, the last new movie I saw was Alvin and the Chipmunks. Typical… My son is 12 now, tough, so we will catch movies like Fantastic 4, Transformers, etc. I’m looking forward to Iron Man.

a story about joey devine from mercury news.

Devine became the first Brave since third baseman Bob Horner in 1978 to play in the big leagues the same year he was drafted. Then he became the first pitcher in major league history to yield grand slams in his first two games.

“I’d be lying to you if I said my confidence wasn’t hurt,” Devine said. “I can’t tell you how much my mom, my dad and my brother helped me through that time. I’ve never really experienced an initiation like that, and it hurt a little bit.”

That’s where short-term memory comes into play. As Devine walks through the A’s clubhouse this spring, he gives off a vibe of positive energy. Devine, traded from Atlanta to Oakland with pitcher Jamie Richmond in January for outfielder Mark Kotsay, believes he’s better equipped to handle adversity as a result of those high-profile failures.

He stands a strong chance of making the A’s roster this spring, and he might have the stuff to eventually be a closer.

good wishes to joey devine. not used well as a brave. story later reveals hip flexor injury and pitching while hurt for the atlanta braves.

“I had a wrap that went around my thigh and up around my back,” he said. “Any time I (lifted up) with my lead leg, I was like a slingshot.”

oh, the humanity! lead leg, much like a horse. or a hoss.

Lead (pronounced /ˈlɛd/) is a chemical element with the symbol Pb (Latin: plumbum) and atomic number 82. A soft, heavy, toxic and malleable poor metal, lead is bluish white when freshly cut, but tarnishes to dull gray when exposed to air. Lead is used in building construction, lead-acid batteries, bullets and shot, weights, and is part of solder, pewter, and fusible alloys. Lead has the highest atomic number of all stable elements.

Bob, No a more loyal native son you will find than I but unfortunately I discovered as a working man that being employed by a major company without having Union protection is like showing up for court without the benefit of a good attorney. A necessary evil if you don’t want to be taken advantage of. It’s all good however.

CL… I will tell you that Josie loves Wilmington. She always says it is what she thought a southern city was supposed to look like. Very different from the impression made by Atlanta.

I stopped in for a minute and must disagree with Gil on cooking seafood in the microwave. Salmon can be very successfully poached in a m.wave. You nuke it in very short bursts and watch the color. AAMOF, it can be done much easier and successfully than using the traditional stove-top method. This was taught to me by a Canadian lady who had attended some of France’s most prestigious cooking schools. I will share the recipe and methodology with any that are interested.

    WW,

The Young Vito flashbacks are great. I just realized a couple of weeks ago that Bruno Kirby’s character is the young version of Clemenza. Guess I never really paid that much attention to him the first 50 times I watched it.

Yesterday, I saw a Bob Costas interview with Robert Duvall circa 1991 on YouTube and they discussed III. Duvall talked about how it was clearly only made for monetary-reasons and that’s why he didn’t participate in the movie. If you have time, look it up. I would post a link, but I can’t search on YouTube from work.

Well timed “Dear Abby” column today. Yes, as a thirty year old male, I read Dear Abby.

Apparently both Merriam-Webster and American Heritage allow that “guy” is acceptable colloquial English when referring to men or women.

I wonder how long this has been the case.

As someone’s who’s been guilty of doing this, I found the discussion here a couple of days ago enlightening. Regardless of what the dictionaries say, Ms. Phillips makes it clear that women don’t want to hear it, and I will try my best to oblige them.

BAS; I think it is an era issue. If a server had referred to my Mother as a guy, my Dad would have taken great umbrage. It would have probably been like Rock Hudson at the end of Giant(dad was an orator, not a fighter).

When I was taking my Mother out (before her death) I resented servers referring to us as “guys”, but I didn’t make an issue of it, until TIP time.

Now, it is almost a part of the culture. But, women and men alike now wear ball caps and boogie in place in so-called “churches”. I almost think I have lived too long.

Another possible solution, that I use frequently: When the server comes up and says, “Hi! I’m Bruce(or Mandy) and I will be your server.” I say, “Hi Bruce(or Mandy) this is Miss____and I’m Mr. Hull, and we will be your customers.” Seems to work.

Used to be that rules in school concerned such behavioral things as not running in the halls, not chewing gum, etc. Then US courts determined that GOD was a horrible influence in our schools so He was removed by law. Now there are mass murders and armed policemen in every school. So, how has that worked out, Mr/Mrs America??

Steve, I couldn’t begin to duplicate the translated dialect of Missy Rosalynn that visits the blog occasionally (where is she?), but I suppose it’s a similar, coastal version of hers. There are many folks here that talk just that way, only very naturally. Words are elongated and articulated in “a mowst deelahtful mannah”.

If you can imagine mixing a Boston Irish Catholic dialect with a southern drawl… that’s a part of Savannah. Verah chaahmin to bee shewahh. When it’s natural.

CL, the parents have certainly failed the students. Teachers have played a part in it too. An even bigger culprit is the “system”. The teachers have almost zero leverage when it comes to punishment. When my mother first started teaching in 1970, she had the ability to take a child into the restroom and paddle them. She didn’t even need to consult the principal. A few years later when I was in school, I remember having to go to the office one time. The principal had an enormous paddle hanging from a hook that I imagined could have only been wielded by Paul Bunyan. It also had holes drilled in it, it was splintered around those holes too, and had rubber bands wrapped around it. All of these modifications were intended to inflict more pain upon the unfortunate recipient. No, I NEVER went to that office again. Seeing that paddle was all I needed.

Nowadays, not even the principle can use corporal punishment as a punishment/deterrent. They’ve taken away the administrations’ trump card and left them with nothing. The PC’ers have ruined that and if allowed they’ll ruin everything else too!

Mark Kotsay is a really cool guy; he’ll be popular with the fans.

Scott Thorman hits the ball a very long way, even to the opposite field. Very frustrating to watch knowing he won’t do it in a game.

No Brandon Jones again today and lots of Anderson again.

Anderson is fast; Jordan Schaeffer is real, REAL fast. When they did base running drills they put him at the end of the line and he waited an extra couple of seconds longer than anyone else before taking off and STILL had to cut the jets off to keep from running over whoever was in front of him. He takes McCann’s space up in baseball’s alternate universe of baserunners.

JJS, did Mike Piazza always have the best throwing arm of all the catchers who reported to camp on HIS teams? Did everyone still know he was going to start? Oh, snap; I just went there. 🙂

The Flu is upon us … just got up … going back to bed … fever and chills … but, before I do …

Gil, you’re a fine gentleman and scholar, brainwashed perhaps, … I admit that I’ve been represented by bad lawyers on occasion, I ain’t never belonged to no union though I have been employed by some major companies. Now I have designed insurance products for various unions to use as bargaining chips in their negotiations.

Whenever I hired on, some of the company’s folks would interview me, ask a lot of questions … if the liked me, they’d take me to the club or executive dining room to lunch so as to make a good impression … might invite me back more than once.

I was a pretty good talker and most of the time they would make me a job offer … and I would turn them down and they’d change their offer and I’d usually turn that down too … sort of like selling a house … and we’d finally make a deal … I tried to live by my word and they generally lived by theirs.

I always gave my best and were I to find my employer and me to be in irreconcilable, adversarial positions, … I just told them to kiss my grits … didn’t need no lawyer or union to help me with that.

Advantage of me may have been taken more than once, but belonging to a union would not have cured that problem … imagine that, a union negotiated benefit … nobody shall attempt to strip the individual of it’s identity or take advantage of same, unless of course, it’s the union.

However, I do understand the Baseball Player’s Union … that makes good sense … people with personal agents, legal advisors, and personal, individually negotiated multimillion dollar contracts … makes good sense to me … it enables Labor and Management to point to the other as being responsible as they both continue to get rich at our expense.

Steve, I’m sure that John is appreciative of your comments, as well as those of FBG, and I can assure you that your influence was nothing but positive, albeit brief. Unfortunately, I find the 3:47 comments of Mr. Hull to be boorish and vulgar, regardless of intent.

JJS-I think you will be quite surprised this season. There is A LOT of real good speed on the team and waiting in the wings. I have been going to the Spring Trainings ever since they started at Disney and they are doing things with running drills (station to station baseball) and are concentrating on hitting up the middle and to the opposite field that I “venever seen them do in recent years. Even Thorman is hitting line drives and going the other way.

Kotsay looks like he may be the steal of the year. He is healthy and has worked very hard. I talked to him a couple times and he is a really nice guy and I think, like The Grinch said, he will be a fan favorite. He is VERY motivated to do well so his career will take off again.

Josh Anderson can flat out fly. He has worked exceptionally hard and I think he will be the fourth outfielder.

This will be a great season. The team is talented, has depth, is very focused and kind of ticked they are not getting any respect. I think Braves’ fans will be surprised and quite happy with this team.

Ma’am-I see Chipper lay a couple of bunts down daily-but he isn’t likely to do much bunting during the season. The pitchers all take bunting practice. I’ve not seen this level of intensity at Spring Training for the last six or so years.

The kids that will be up this year and in the next couple will be a good bunch of players-extraordinarily fast and talented. Josh Anderson may well surprise many Braves’ fans. He is a very nice young man who has worked very hard and he has speed to burn. He is FAST-and an incredibly good center fielder. Schaeffer looks fourteen and is even faster than Anderson and Lillibridge (who looks twelve).

Both The Grinch, Myself and even Buster Olney are quite happy with this team and are totally mystified why so many think they stand no chance. This may be a case of having it good being the overlooked underdog. They won’t overlook us for long, I’m willing to bet. This is a VERY GOOD team. We have much talent, confidence and depth.

Oh yeah. Hampton looks devastatingly nasty, too. Also look out for Wil Ohman. He (after Kotsay) may be the steal of the off season. He is good, funny and a great presence (and runs almost as fast as the aforementioned players-I was shocked how fast he made it around the bases). I think fans will learn to like him a lot and he will be a great clubhouse guy. You’ve got to love a guy who can wear number 13 and enjoy doing so. A very flaky guy with lots of talent and is very fan friendly. He’ll help keep the guys loose.

The team is talented, has depth, is very focused and kind of ticked they are not getting any respect” … Lew, that’s great to hear … we knew they were talented with depth … and I think we’ll win the pennant.

However, I can’t imagine their being ticked as a result of not getting respect … that’s either a mask put on for effect, or it’s sad … I suspect it’s for effect, at least in most cases.

My guess is that most players on every team respect the other team and its players, regardless of the team. Like quickly taking umbrage without having done due diligence, being so ticked sounds like a shallow attitude, if it’s indeed real … they’re respected … but, if they’re worried about it, … methinks it’s easy enough to correct.

No question that fans should be happy, not sure why we should be surprised.

okay, bloggers may have their way with “bream will always hit a corn pup.”

and blog harmony – must be promoted here. and jimmy smith must have missed all the really bad stuff – but that’s okay because jimmy smith doesn’t like all the bad stuff that sometimes goes on on blogs. that is why jimmy smith likes blogging with carolina lady – tallest blog host blogging braves baseball.

lew, why the change? why are the coaches more attuned? why the new drills? is it frank? or, is it the influence of tom glavine coming over from an outstanding mets organization? 😆 oh, the humanity! jimmy smith sounds like a mets trole. and chipper will never bunt. count on it. never. not going to happen.

all national league pitchers should be able to bunt. last year braves pitchers could not and it cost this team in the win column. who instructs the players on bunting?

and where is julio? is julio in somebody’s camp? and wouldn’t julio make a good hitting instructor?

PS… Bob, I was never forced to join a union and I have been on both sides of that street. No, most folks in the office are not affected. However, more than one occasion I have been witness to white collar types being shown the door six month prior to their being vested in their pension. Perhaps the folks you worked for were more benevolent. The people for whom I worked would run over their grand mother if they thought it would benefit them.

Now, rest and get over that nasty bug.

and this stomach lining talk must end. maybe after a suitable rhyme is found. and jimmy smith is watching newt on television right now. not just any newt – former speaker of the house. was newtralized only a few days after being re-elected to the house.

I have been witness to white collar types being shown the door six month prior to their being vested in their pension” … Gil, so have I … as I’m guessing have been many here. I know of one company that appeared to use the technique as part of their operating strategy for many years … but certainly there are better ways to address such problems than unions. So much of what the unions are about seems predicated on adversarial relationships and I just don’t don’t like it.

While it’s true that one shouldn’t go to bed with the Devil for the purpose of gain, one should not blindly depend on the benevolence of one’s employer … but that in no way speaks to union justification.

That there is a problem, doesn’t speak to the solution. Certainly, cases alleging termination so as to avoid the vesting of benefits should be decided on an individual basis … and the fact that a person is terminated one minute before vesting doesn’t mean that anything is necessarily wrong or that redress is in order. I don’t see how unions are relevant to such evaluation and resolution … though I can imagine the political union bosses would applaud most efforts to otherwise convince.

Enough of such talk … time to start playing

Good morning all, Chris.. I have theory, it is based on my many years of observation plus Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. That is not to be confuse with Jeff Foxworthy’s theory on relatives. Anyway, Einstein posed that energy can never be created or destroyed, only changed in its form.

Now, I think the same is true for fat cells, if someone loses weight, those depleted fat molecules are released into the atmosphere and wander about looking for a new organism in which to inhabit. Sometimes they only travel a short distance, inhabiting a host within the same household. Example, my wife will go on a diet and I will gain weight or vice versa.

Sometimes when large masses of people such as those starving in Africa release huge amount of fat molecule, those spread to other countries such as the United States where we have an epidemic of obesity. I am not certain of a long term solution but I know we are doomed to the presence of such fat cells until a proper balance is struck in the world.

Now, I do know that fat cells don’t move very fast, thus if you run or even walk briskly everyday, most are capable of outrunning the pesky fat cells but woe unto those who are deeply entrenched in a sedimentary life style no matter what the cause for they seem to be the first target free ranging fat molecules looking to deposit themselves.

Now I realize this may be viewed as just another crackpot theory by a crazy old man but that a look around…. Seems pretty obvious to me… 🙂

Chris… I have considered that theory on the winds of Africa. However, fat has a way of sneaking up on us. Seldom do they attach themselves all at once, they are very stealth in that respect. It is why most people don’t really notice them until suddenly one day they wake up and their clothes no longer fit. Then we do what all humans do in the face of adversity, we blame it on someone else. My personal favorite is the cloths dryer. Yep. everyone knows that clothes dryers shrink clothes. Also the Chinese cut corners on every item of clothing and they don’t use the same system of measure we do. Why else would I need to buy a 3X when I know I only need to wear a large…. ?

Woe, all y’all are talking too fast for my clouded mind to follow!

Salty, no skipped nightcap here. It’s against my religion! Don’t know what was going on. Went to sleep around 2, had crazy dreams and woke at 4 or so. Couldn’t get back to sleep until almost 6. Finally got back to sleep and then more wacko dreams until the phone mercifully rang and pulled me from my misery.

mrgil, the clothes dryer is often the culprit at my house too. Reminds me of when I was a kid visiting my grandparents with my mother. Grandma’s dryer was broken so Mom and I took our freshly washed laundry up to the laundromat to be dried. Mom used too high of a setting and literally shrank all of our clothes. Nothing fit any more! We literally had to go buy all new clothes.

Hillbilly, if it’s possessive, then it would be “all y’all’s”!

Lew and Grinch, hope y’all have fun today. We’ll be looking for a full scouting report on Charlie Morton. More importantly, we’ll be looking for a full scouting report on fbg’s goodies!

As far as Congress, we are all often better off when inactivity prevails as our wallets are generally much safer. A man in Bogart is claiming self-defense after shooting, and killing, a motorcyclist. He shot him in the back. The attorney who takes that case is hunngggry.

At one time in my life, if I could have re-created myself, I would have looked like Cary Grant and have been as smart and artiulate as WFB. Now they are both gone. Sleep well Mr. buckley. You have earned it. And now the mantle is bestowed on Bill Bennett.

I know I will get banned for posting this but I think it is in the interests of national health and to give myself up for such a noble cause is worth it.

As Ben Franklin said: “In wine there is wisdom, in beer
there is freedom, in water there is bacteria.”

In a number of very carefully controlled trials, scientists
have demonstrated that if we drink 1 litre of water each
day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more
than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, ( E.coli) – bacteria
    found in feces.

In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop.
However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer
(or tequila, rum, whiskey or other liquor) because alcohol
has to go through a purification process of boiling,
    filtering and/or fermenting

    Remember:
    Water = Poop
    Wine = Health

Therefore, it’s better to drink wine and talk stupid, than
to drink water and be full of shit.

There is no need to thank me for this valuable information.
I’m doing it as a public service.

I’d like to say that from the outside looking in, I think Mr. Buckley was a truly good man … those who were on the inside looking out seem to think so too.

Interestingly, those who chose to pay tribute to the man freely referenced God in their rhetoric.

Those who think his passing is of but minor significance are to be pitied as are those who scorned him for his delightful choice of words and self expression. He was one of the few men who seemed to have really understood what they were talking about … a sad day!

The Braves play at Disney but, though Roy named it for Walt so we wouldn’t forget, it just ain’t the same with them gone. The conservative movement without Buckley is like Disney without Walt and Roy … a sad day indeed.

Paladin, the word “whiskey” comes from an old Gaelic word “usquebah” which meant “Water of Life”. In Medieval Europe, drinking water could make you sick, or worse, because of the unsanitary conditions. No one knew why drinking distilled spirits or even why adding whiskey to water made it safe to consume but it became a necessity to survival.

When the first settlers came to this country, they brought with them the technique of distillation. It was only natural that they would do so because it was so vital to their existence. Farmers were generally the ones that had stills because they grew the grain (barley, rye, and eventually corn) that was fermented and distilled into whiskey.

I’ve always found it interesting to note that production or consumption of alcohol was never considered a widespread moral or religious issue until the latter half of the nineteenth century. As history goes, this is a relatively recent development and it largely only existed in this country. Most other countries still have more liberal alcohol laws than the US (with the exception of DUI laws).

You are certainly correct in your premise that wine, beer and whiskey are all “cleaner” as they all go through a fermentation process and filtration which eliminates impurities. Whiskey, or any distilled spirit, goes through the extra step of distillation which kills just about any unwanted organisms.

    End lecture.

Berigan, that question about AJ was one of those where I had my tongue firmly planted in my cheek! I know, doesn’t always translate well in the printed word. Anyway, I read where he showed up at 240 lbs. or so. Yep, I guess $18m and a chance to re-prove your worth as one of the top athletes in your sport isn’t anything to exert yourself over!

Morning, all! Fell asleep early; hangover and an early morning. Thought I’d make a pee-thirty post to give a bit of an update.

Lousy game today for a Dawg fan. Lew bought tickets for the lower-level Dawg section but somehow received ones in the upper level on the opposite side of the field. I never saw so many Gaytor fans at a non-Florida event in my life, and we were stuck sitting next to a group of them. So naturally, right before first pitch (during a dead silence) I yelled “Gooooo Dawgs, sic ’em, woof woof woof woof woof” at the top of my lungs and got nothing but moderate laughter from the Dawg section and dead silence from the Gaytor fans. Too many old folks for woofing, I suppose. Now, Braves…

Morton isn’t as aggressive as he should be with his stuff, just like his scouting report says. His fastball stayed in the low-90’s range (below advertisement), but he seemed to be focusing more on changing speeds, which he did quite well. He skipped back and forth from 91-3 heat to 80-83 changeups to 72-4 curves and almost never threw the same pitch twice in a row. If he was indeed holding back on the heat, he’s definitely got stuff. Just needs to get mean.

The rest of the young pitchers were adequate; nothing fancy or spectacular. Only one (can’t remember his name; forgot to bring my laptop) had memorable power; the rest were pretty pedestrian (one guy pitched a whole inning where every single pitch was exactly 87 mph, but for one at 88 and one at 81 which induced a strikeout).

Lots and lots of hustle; the young up-and-comers are hungry (the only player who dogged it was Chipper, who turned a stand up triple or possibly and inside-the-parker into a 2-run double). Anyone who thinks our minor league system was destroyed with the Tex trade needs to go check out some ST games. Anderson and Schaefer are FAST. Anderson backed up 1st on a play where he made it in from the right field warning track in about four seconds, and Schaefer made a running catch in center that made me not miss Andruw so much.

Brandon Jones looked okay (nothing special in the field or at the plate), verdict’s not out on him yet since nobody saw him practice all week. Prado was his usual average self. Blanco had a double. Borchard had at least one big hit and runs hard and fast for a big guy (think Thorman who makes contact). Thorman didn’t make contact. Neither did Lillibridge, who looked good in the field but not so good at the plate. That seems to be the main concern over the star prospects; they still look a little raw as far as hitting goes. I get the feeling they’ll come around, though. We had a better camera today and got some fantastic shots (I promise you’ll get them tomorrow or the next day, CL; they’ll be worth it. Got a great one of Chipper making contact on his big hit and the 12-year-old Lillibridge striking out).

The game itself was a yawner, but we left feeling pretty good about the team. I’ll check back with y’all later after I get some more sleep. Must ready my system for pies and cakes. 🙂

Grinch, thanks for the scouting report. Glad to hear Chipper isn’t being foolish in a meaningless game. It’d be awful for him to pull his hammy or whatever, especially in a ST game.

Sorry you got stuck in the UF section. I should know. I’m married to one. So the college team I root for (aside from my alma mater The College of Charleston which has no football program) is generally whoever is playing the Gators. I’ve got nothing against them, I just like to antagonize my wife……..

That seems to be the main concern over the star prospects; they still look a little raw as far as hitting goes.

Typically at this stage of spring, the pitchers are ahead of the hitters. Even though the opponent wasn’t a group of professional players, they’ve been practicing since around Feb 1 I believe.

Looking forward to seeing your pictures and getting a scouting report on certain baked goods!

a good report from correspondent grinch. a very good report. and this journalist heard another radio interview this morning with chipper jones . . . remember the word “repertoire” – this is apparently a new word in the chipper jones vocabulary and was used frequently this morning. someone must tell chipper that reportoire has nothing to do with wardrobe. still, all in all, a most entertaining interview. if dogs could talk . . .

and, soon the dugout roof will be covered in pies and cakes and braves and stuff bloggers. and will the pies and cakes attract andruw jones? and why not wait ’til winter to look at some film and then decide to lose a few pounds? what? joe torre is scolding andruw for being fat? has joe torre seen chino cadahia? oh, the $18 million and dodger blue . . . jimmy smith now understands.

and, shameless braves and stuff blog promotion at today’s game (can do this on the road – not at disney) – a mr. stomach lining character will parade around the field between innings touting this blog. should draw a whole new crowd of bloggers. oh, the thought!

and in the friendly competition to see which beet writer can brake news at camp, chop seal is now up 1-0. the other beet writer is hanging that beet writer’s hat on the announcement of the spring rotation. chop seal broke the news of bobby cox having the flu and some serious sinus issues. chop seal says remember joe borchard. not sure what that means.

Catching up on the overnights inspired a thought or two before work begins:

Carolina Lady, that Global Incident Map is incredible. Before clicking around the globe I had to check out the incident in Savannah. “Airport officials said the people loading the bags thought they saw smoke coming from the same golf bag. They called police, who called out the bomb squad and explosives experts. The bag was screened and later found to be fine”.

Braves pitcher headed to Spring Training?

Grinch, very good report. It’s hard to feel bad for you sitting in the upper bleachers at a Spring Training game, while we’re having a blast of 28 degree weather here on the coast.

I yelled “Gooooo Dawgs, sic ‘em, woof woof woof woof woof” at the top of my lungs and got nothing but moderate laughter from the Dawg section and dead silence from the Gaytor fans. Too many old folks for woofing, I suppose.

Or it could have just been the green complexion. We love it, but it probably takes some getting used to.

Berigan, good find on the Sports Illustrated article. Tom Verducci wrote a heck of an article there. Many a truth told in jest. BSOML… funny. One observation that rang true for me was, “You are professional athletes. One basic requirement of your job is to be in shape, OK? That’s especially expected from those of you in your 20s, which should be your physical peak.”

It’s odd how we over-congratulate professional athletes for showing up at the beginning of the season in good shape. That’s should be the minimal expectation and the cost of entry.

Wonder if some of the same “original” beat writers that cover baseball and perpetuate the “BSOML” quotes as part of their “Groundhog Day” reports of spring topics would follow it up with something like, “I got up early today, looked out my window and, lo and behold… I saw the first bird on the scene as he flew down and got a worm”. He arrived in great shape and could fly. Amazing how that happens.

And Pavarotti showed up for rehearsals and could hold a tune. Wonders never cease for the professional in any venue.

I’m certainly not a big fan of W but he had some good one liners with the Red Sox at the White House.

“I’m sorry his running mate, Manny Ramirez, isn’t here. I guess his grandmother died again,” Bush said to laughter. “Just kidding. Tell Manny I didn’t mean it. But I do want to quote him. He said, ‘When you don’t feel good, and you still get hits, that’s when you know you’re a bad man.’ I don’t know what that means. But if bad man means good hitter, he’s a really bad man, because he was clutch in the World Series and clutch in the playoffs.”

The Red Sox, who captured their second World Series title in four years by sweeping the Colorado Rockies in the Fall Classic, were greeted by more than a thousand people near the White House.

To that, the President noted the popularity of Matsuzaka.

“His press corps is bigger than mine,” Bush said to more laughter. “And we both have trouble answering questions in English.”

JJS-I’m afraid Spring Training is over for Myself and The Grinch. The Dodger game is a three hour drive away in Vero Beach. I’m packing stuff to ship home (artwork and baseballs) and Grinch is driving southward and westward to pick up FBG. Hopefully we will see Savannah Guy tomorrow for dinner-Mrs SG’s health and comfort willing, of course.

I agree with the Grinch’s assessment of the Braves and their young players. Anderson’s back up of that play was amazing-especially considering the ball never left the infield. He ran 100 feet in seconds to back up first. Schaefer’s catch WAS excellent and robbed at least a double from the Dawg player.

Mort5on showed a range of speeds between 74-94 and almost every four MPH increment in between. Maybe he was just working obn his breaking ball and change up, but if he mixes in a 92-94 MPH fastball with that rangeof speeds, he will be devastating.

The starters and regulars only played 2-3 innings. Our outfield was Brandon in left, Schaefer in center and Anderson in right. The defense was absolutely excellent. Much speed among those three and quite adequate to excellent defensively. Richmond will have a great team under Chris Chambliss this year. The Braves will have excellent depth.

Oh, mercy. Take a break and check in and see that jimmy smith has been having a very good time this morning! 😀

Paladin, I design and hand-build bird houses out of 1″ cedar. Or did. Had to put it on hold when Mother’s condition deteriorated. (She requires such close attention that I can’t leave her long enough to work on them.) Still have all the tools and equipment, parts and supplies. The 5-speed drill press is still in my laundry room, the band saw now resides in what ‘was’ my living room. I’ll have to admit, having them readily available is extremely handy!! Something need trimming, adjusting, whatever? No problem! 😆

Yes, jimmy, I have a nice leather wood-working apron and a full-face shield that I use when using any of the saws (have 3). The wood dust/saw dust irritates the daylights out of my skin so I cover everything possible when sawing. And, yes, I probably look pretty funny! 😆

Hillbilly-I understand your skepticism and quite honestly, I was of much the same mind until late last week. This kid has as good a work ethic as anyone I’ve seen in Braves camp for several years. He works EXTREMELY hard. You can also tell he listens to his coaches. He will never be a power hitter-of that there is little doubt. However……he could easily become a gap to gap doubles hitter and his speed is unbelievable-much more than plus speed (in the vernacular)-it is at the very least Furcal speed.

I truly thought Brandon Jones would be handed the platoon with Diaz. Now I’m much less certain that it won’t be Josh Anderson who gets the nod with Matt. He also beat out a ground ball to the pitcher that I don’t believe anyone else on the team would have been safe on. He will definitely fluster pitchers when on base. Is this not what many have been clamoring for?

Also factor in that Jordan Schafer is even faster and DOES have power. He made an Andruw-worthy play against the center field wall yesterday, after making a considerable run to get there. He also smacked a long fly into the teeth of a strong wind. He will hit many Home Runs, ostensibly knocking in Josh from second a good bit of the time.

What I’m getting at is this-I can quite easily foresee (especially if Tex is not resigned), a long term outfield in Atlanta of Anderson, Schafer and Francoeur (he’s what makes the Tex resigning relevant) -I can see they will have to pay Frenchy at least and average of ten to twelve mil per to sign him long term after seeing the Cabrera and Howard arbitration amounts-both ten mil per after three years. This may make it harder to sign Tex long term. They will sign someone like Nick Johnson (like, not necessarily him) until Heyward is ready at first.

They will have a young team with maybe a bit less power, but that can make good things happen on the base paths. If you look at Wren’s moves over the winter, he signed speed-lots of it. I think this signals a change of direction, especially when you factor in Bobby Cox’s sooner rather than later retirement. We may well no longer rely on three run HR’s to score our runs. We will have defense and speed. Add some good pitching (which may be what we SHOULD spend Tex money on) and we will have a very good, very fast, extremely good fielding, successful and CHEAP team for quite a few more years. Solid and promising. After what I’ve seen the past two weeks, I am psyched and greatly heartened. Much more than in recent years. There has been a definite change in the air down here. I’m well pleased.

I love the enthusiasm, and if you didn’t see it yesterday, I’ll prasie y’all again for some excellent reporting from ST this year. You say you see a long-term outfield of Schafer, Anderson, and Francoeur. I’m curious as to what you’re considering long-term. I’m thinking about B. Jones, Gorkys Hernandez, and Cody Johnson while I’m asking this. Do we have the makings of a log-jam in the outfield?

Hillbilly-Just going by what I’ve seen. I’ve sat next to the dugout and have basically seen what Bobby Cox and Terry Pendleton have seen for ten separate practices. Didn’t have their bird’s eye view, but had as good a seat as any fan had. I paid VERY close attention (probably to the detriment of my museum and prizes-I could have gotten more autographs, not that I did badly).

Brandon Jones got zero swings at the upper field (where the starters take BP). Anderson got all the licks up there. That really told me something. Couple that with the fact that Brandon is considered only a corner outfielder, while Josh Anderson plays all outfield positions and I think the writing is on the wall. I could be wrong, but that’s how I see it.

As for Brandon and Gorkys-It would be possible to package Brandon along with some of the guys like Brayan Pena who are out of options for some more young pitching of a third or first base prospect. Who knows? As for Gorkys-he is not even in camp yet, nor is he on the immediate radar. These guys could play their six years and out and Gorkys could just be starting his option years. Lots of possibilities.

Not saying any of this will definitely happen, but with Frank Wren’s moves (got HIS autograph, too), which definitely produced faster players than was John Schuerholz’s wont, and seeing how the pecking order seems to be unfolding, they are distinct possibilities. Just my opinion, though.

Yep, giving up 2 hits and 5 walks sounds like a sure fire recipe for disaster.

Generally, I do not take any performances prior to about the third week of SP seriously. Rookies may be the exception as they must make an immediate impact or risk being shuttled off to the back fields where they are forgotten by all but the most dedicated observers.

    By STAFF REPORTER

    Published: 28 Feb 2008

A BOY can reportedly only communicate by ‘chirping’ – after living his life in a virtual aviary.

According to reports from Russia, the 7-year-old ‘bird boy’ has spent his life in a flat filled with bird cages with a mum who treated him like one of her pets.

Pravda said the boy’s 31-year-old mum did not talk him and treated him like a bird, forcing him to learn avian language.

Social worker Galina Volskaya said shocked authorities discovered the boy in a two-bedroom apartment with bird mess littering the floor.

Volskaya said: “When you start talking to him, he chirps.”

And she added that the boy becomes frustrated at not being able to communicate and flaps his arms.

Pravda reported that authorities believe the boy is suffering from Mowgli syndrome, after the Jungle Book character who is raised by wild animals.

The boy has reportedly been released by authorities and put in a medical facility.

now, do they put papers down for this bird boy? don’t want to ruffle any feathers. many more bird jokes come to mind but jimmy smith is tired and unable to type more right now.
