25: The Minor League Experience

CHARLESTON, SC – As many of you know, I am a huge fan of minor league baseball. There is something special and different about the baseball experience at a minor league ball park that you just don’t get at a big league facility. The seats tend to be a whole lot closer to the field and even the worst seats in the house are generally pretty good. It’s an inexpensive night out too, with tickets at my home park as cheap as $4.00. Beers are $3.00 and even the food is “normally” priced.

Another great aspect of minor league ball is how close you can get to the players. In Low A ball, the kids are generally pretty young and are not yet tired of signing autographs for the kids or of their budding celebrity. As a frequent visitor to our local field I have struck up friendships with a couple of players that exist to this day. The likelihood of that happening with a big leaguer is virtually nonexistent in my experience.

Another interesting part of the minor league experience is some of the great characters that work in the stadium. The Charleston RiverDogs is owned in part by Mike Veeck, son of legendary HOF’er Bill Veeck. Veeck the Elder owned the St. Louis Browns, Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox at various times. Larry Doby, Satchell Paige and Eddie Gaedel were all signees of Veeck’s. He planted the beloved ivy at Wrigley Field and as owner of the White Sox snuck a microphone into the booth while Harry Carey sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”, had it broadcast into the stadium and a tradition was born.

It is very safe to say that Mike is definitely a “chip off the old block”. Remember “Disco Demolition Night”? That was one of Mike’s ideas. Granted it wasn’t one of his better ones but it really got a lot of people’s attention. Among the more interesting and zany promotions dreamed up by Veeck and his team for RiverDogs promotions include Vasectomy Night (some lucky guy was going to get a free vasectomy but the Catholic Church complained so they cancelled it), Funeral Night, and Silent Night (no one aside from the players, coaches and umpires were allowed to make any noise at all, which was a blast, by the way). This brings me to what I believe might be Veeck’s best idea ever.

Whenever I hear “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”, I am automatically reminded of two gentlemen: Don Wardlow and Jim Lucas. For twelve years, three of which were spent in Charleston, they called the games for the radio broadcast. Lucas did the play-by-play; Wardlow, the color commentary. To say that they were excellent would be an understatement. Lucas had a way with words that is simply indescribable. He painted such a fine picture of the game’s happenings that, quite frankly, made it unnecessary to actually be at the game. Close your eyes and listen and you’ll know how long the pitcher’s sideburns are, how many steps the left fielder took to catch the fly ball, the exact color of the visiting teams uniform tops. You’ll understand with as much clarity as the catcher what the home plate umpire’s strike zone looks like, which cheek the first baseman put his dip in and how big a lead the runner at first has taken. The guy was truly an artist in his ability to paint a picture.

Lucas didn’t provide this information just for the radio listeners. He did it because it was a necessity for his partner. Don Wardlow has been blind since birth and has never seen anything, at least not in the way that you and I can see. But his baseball vision is astounding. His knowledge of the game and its history is astonishing. After hearing Lucas’ description of what had just occurred, Wardlow invariably had something interesting to add. It might have been a bit of baseball trivia from 1893 or 1983. It might have been about an event that took place at a game he’d attended as a child. It could have been about anything, but whatever it was, it was always relevant and interesting to the listener.

I mentioned Harry Carey and we are all aware of the tradition of the seventh inning stretch that has spread throughout baseball. Don Wardlow carried that tradition on at our games, but he had a twist. While we all know the verse that starts out “Take me out to the ballgame”, few of us, myself included, knew that this is actually the chorus of the song. Like Caray, Wardlow wouldn’t make it far on “American Idol”, but he dutifully sang the first two verses nightly.

By the way, the lyrics were written by Jack Norworth in 1908 and the music was composed by Albert Von Tilzer:

This is the original version:
Katie Casey was baseball mad,
Had the fever and had it bad.
Just to root for the home town crew,
Ev’ry sou
Katie blew.
On a Saturday her young beau
Called to see if she’d like to go
To see a show, but Miss Kate said “No,
I’ll tell you what you can do:”

(chorus)
Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd;
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don’t care if I never get back.
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don’t win, it’s a shame.
For it’s one, two, three strikes, you’re out,
At the old ball game.

Katie Casey saw all the games,
Knew the players by their first names.
Told the umpire he was wrong,
All along,
Good and strong.
When the score was just two to two,
Katie Casey knew what to do,
Just to cheer up the boys she knew,
She made the gang sing this song:

(chorus)
Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd;
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don’t care if I never get back.
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don’t win, it’s a shame.
For it’s one, two, three strikes, you’re out,
At the old ball game.

If you’d like to hear the song performed here’s a link (requires RealPlayer).

Wardlow decided to retire a few years ago. His wife is also disabled and he felt guilty about being away on long road trips when she would take ill. The RiverDogs decided to perform only the “traditional” version during the seventh inning stretch the year after he left. That was a disappointing but understandable decision as performing the first verse was really his “thing”. Either way, whenever I hear that song, no matter where I am, I am instantly reminded of Jim Lucas and Don Wardlow, baseball announcers extraordinaire. Just a thread in the fabric of the minor league baseball experience!

Back here in the sticks, baseball at the level you are talking about is the bigs. We have no professional baseball, or any that they will admit to anyway. But, if you love baseball you can enjoy it at this level. About all they do at this level that is “bigs” quality is scratch their non-coms, but they are learning. It’s fun to try and visualize whether so and so will make the trek or whether he will end up washing cars for Stan McNabb, the local every-damn-thing dealer. Some have, but that’s another story. Again, good job, Klobber.

chrisklob! good stuff. and the minor league crackers were a good baseball team. only toward the end did the crackers crumble. when the braves arrrived it was such fun to go to the games! then, the braves got so bad that it was like minor league ball without all the fun promotions. old friend bob hope was hired to do promotions and bob did some fine things . . . ostrich races, pushing peanuts around with a nose, and a high wire act. but the baseball was really, really bad – and the stadium experience was equally bad. dirty stadium, stale concessions, very poor attendance. jimmy smith remembers the first game jimmy smith attended after homeboy upstairs arrived in atlanta. when jimmy smith offered the ticket taker jimmy smith’s ticket, the ticket taker said, “hi, there, welcome to atlanta stadium, i hope you enjoy the game.” jimmy smith was stunned! and the stadium was clean and the concessions were better and the parking was improved and the play on the field was getting better. that is when atlanta became major league in this journalist’s opinion.

and jimmy smith remains concerned about the bird boy.

Chris, excellent blog!!! Did ya hear??? CL has made you the full time blog writer, congrats!!! 😆
I as well was unaware of the first verse to Take Me Out to the Ballgame! Great stuff!
I had seen a story or two on Don Wardlow several years back…thought it was very interesting, but you really made me wish I had heard the team! Too bad he couldn’t at least do the home games…..
I have a shameful secret to admit. I have NEVER seen a minor league game!!! 😳 And that is a fact, even after living in Jacksonville for 10 years! (They had a AA team during that time) After leaving St. Louis at 16, I just watched Cubs and Braves games in cable. Plus, no one, NO ONE in Jacksonville gave a damn about baseball. Outside of Chipper’s family, and they had to move to town! 😉 Never met anyone that had even been to a AA game there. Jacksonville is the Unbaseball town. All anyone cared about was the Gators, and the Jacksonville Bulls of the USFL for a couple of years.
Since I was from St. Louis, and the Football Cards were forever 5-11, and the Mizzou team was bad….I could hardly understand the cult that followed a college football team, a minor league team for God’s Sake!!!!
So anyway, that’s my excuse for never seeing a Minor league game…either in a Major league town, or in a minor league town that ranked baseball right with hockey and soccer on it’s radar.
I will rectify this sin once the Braves AAA team moves to Gwinnett….and I bet I will kick myself for not going sooner….

yes, journalist does remember naming lew a journalist long ago . . . but lew’s license to do journalism expired when lew was snowed in last spring. always good to get a renewal. much like a drivers license. and journalists and beet writers can sometimes be the same, sometimes not. some beet writers are not journalists. many journalists are not beet writers. very few beet writers can draw – or spell, for that matter. beet writers get beet up a lot.

and beet writing has its rewards . . . cheese and baked goods. then, there are the drawbacks . . . self-esteem issues and poor dental hygiene. all in all, jimmy smith would never be a beet writer but is proud to be a journalist. chop seal is okay with being a beet writer for now to help out carolina lady, but chop seal wants to be a columnist.

somebody is giving beet writing a bad name.

and shameless promotion of another braves blog this morning on wsb radio. sounded like a paid advertisement to this journalist. and why would this be necessary? 9,455 views in february for the carolina lady cox chambers blog? and would carolina lady like to see something in a canned ham? and are canned hams still being consumed on that other blog?

It is such a turn-off to hear an otherwise attractive “woman” talk like a 5-year old. Why don’t they check out some old movies and listen to Lauren Becall, Grace Kelly, Rita Hayworth, Barbara Stanwych and Vivien Leigh communicate femininity? ‘Course none of them wore ball caps and phrased each sentence like a question, either. Oh well, I still think I lived in the good old days.

and this out of devil rays camp: “Minor league shortstop Reid Brignac broke the small toe on his right foot when he was struck by a pitch from Chris Mason. He is expected to be out four to seven days.”

and now, the mets . . . “Reports are that Hernandez did not have bunion removal surgery, as the Mets claimed he did this past offseason, and that instead, he had an operation to shorten one toe—which, as you might assume, has left him off-balance and behind the other pitchers.”

and why would one shorten a toe? unless that toe was too long . . . and is this relevant to yesterday’s talk of stubbed toes? toe stubs?

Damion Moss in to pitch for the Braves in the top of the 8th.

–Xavier Paul at bat. Sorry but there are some technical difficulties with ESPN. Screen went to black in the middle of a pitch and then they went to a commercial. I guess it’s ST for the guys in the truck too!

SG, sorry to hear that Mrs Guy isn’t well. I hope she gets to feeling better soon. I’d love to take you up on that offer! Same goes for you up here! We’ve got a beautiful park here.

–John LIndsey at bat. HIts towering pitch to Shaffer in CF. Runner stays at 2b.

Fernando de la Cruz on the mound for the DOdgers.

    –Corky Miller flies to CF.
–Scott Thorman still has that long swing. He grounds out to 2b.
–Martin Prado grounds out to 3b.

    Top of the 9th.

BY the way, Mets trail the Cardinals in the top of the ninth. 4-3
Phillies and Pittsburgh are tied in the top of the eighth. 4-4.

Nix in to pitch for Braves. Who the hell is NIX?
    — John Ford Griffin doubles off RF wall.
    — Lucas May strikes out swinging.
    — Ramon Martinez grounds out to 3b. Runner stays at 2b.
    — Chavez singles to RF. Griffin scores. 10-3.
    — Chin-Lung Hu draws a walk. Chavez to second.
    — Xavier Paul was HBP in his previous AB (during technical problems.) This time he grounds out to Thor at 1b. GAME OVER! Braves win 10-3.

Much good baseball on blog today. Now for stuff…

So much bird talk and bird house building stories on the last blog and Carolina Lady builds blogs and actually builds bird houses and is good with tools too! She is a Renaissance Lady! That talent also prepared her well for managing all of us crazy tools on Braves and Stuff (ban sawed for that?). ; )

(Sentimental transition now) The stories reminded me of a time I was just a little tyke and built a birdhouse with my own little hands. After finishing and too excited to wait for Dad to get home and help, I decided to hang it in a tree myself before he got home from work. It didn’t work out that well as a birdhouse. Lesson of patience and realizing limitations was learned that day. I have no shame… here’s a little poem I wrote for you CL about the experience:

    Little Builders Need Little Ladders

As a little boy I built a little birdhouse

for a little chickadee, cardinal or wren

Impatient and alone, I hung it too low

Henceforth it was a home to a mouse.

My wife is actually doing quite well right now, she’s in the final stages of “adjustment procedures”, but still unable to travel for a little while. She’ll be back in action soon and 100 percent.

Berigan, until 2 years ago I would average about a dozen games a year in Atlanta. I expect that I’ll see half of that this year, or try anyway. More if possible. Mrs. Guy has joined a few times. She’s not the baseball fan that I am, but she cooks well, watches them with me on TV (between her readin’ and piddlin’ around the house) and she doesn’t beat me too often so I’ll keep her.

We should have a Braves and Stuff denizen game get-together sometime. That would be a blast. BBQ dinner afterwards… or before. Raisin’s can bring his band and play a few tunes!

Gorton’s recalls frozen fish fillets in Georgia, other states

    Published on: 02/29/08

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Gorton’s Inc. recalled about 1,000 cases of frozen fish in Georgia and nine other states Friday after confirming that items a Pennsylvania customer reported finding in her food were pills.

Gorton’s said it ordered the recall as a precaution while a laboratory works to determine the nature of the pills. Results are expected early next week.

and who didn’t have bait earlier in the week? and did this baitless fisherman decide to use tums as bait? and now the little fishies are fish sticks with pills inside? not saying for sure, but could be. how would a fish get a pill? and how does a fish stick eat? swim?

Some interesting notes about one of my least favorite Braves of all time:

    From mlbtraderumors.com

Jason Marquis made it clear today that he does not want to be a member of the Cubs if he is sent to the bullpen.

“I love Chicago,” Marquis said. “I definitely want to stay here. This is the place I want to be. I signed here for a reason. But I also signed as a starter, and I think that’s where I help the team the most. Obviously we’ll see what happens when it’s time for [the Cubs] to make their decision.

Apparently Marquis forgot who his manager is. Lou Piniella responded by saying that Marquis will only be in the rotation if he wins a spot.

“Well, if that’s the case, he can go somewhere else,” Piniella said. “Win a spot in the rotation, you don’t have to worry about it. … I’ve got seven starters here for five spots, you know? It’s a little bit too early to start talking about what he wants to do or not do…He can go somewhere else right now if he wants. How’s that?”

Marquis, who signed with the Cubs prior to last season, went 12-9, with a 4.60 ERA in 34 appearances last year. He has two years remaining on his deal that will pay him $6.4MM this year and $9.9MM in 2009.

chris… It’s funny how many folks seem to think they can dictate the terms of their employment after the fact. Even an old union man like myself knew that the one thing you did not tell the boss is where you would and wouldn’t work. Your choice was do the job assigned or quit. End of discussion. The only thing the union could do was make sure a worker got paid at the proper rate. Jason should check with Soriano and ask him how it worked out when he told the Nationals he would only play 2nd base.

Look for Jason to be traded to a place like Kansas City where he will play for the right to not be the last place team.

FBG… Glad you made it back home okay. My youngest son is thinking about moving to North Beach. Why I don’t know why but he is young and still thinks the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. he forgets that even if that is the case, you still have to mow the lawn….

Still, Braves have a few years to see that play out. Four, right? Lots can happen, lots can change. Hope he signs ahead of time. Then Delta is ready when he is.

Sooner than that, we’ll see the Tex cards played. He’s holding a good hand… but from everything I see, read and hear… including Tex’s comments, my bet is he’s gone after this year if not sooner. No crystal ball, just gut. Uh, no stomach lining, just gut. No need for queasiness.

Players see the same thing the rest of you see, contracts are escalating at a phenomenal rate. Why would a franchise type player sign for Mark Derosa money when the only benefit is for a faceless corporation’s bottom line? After a while a franchise has to stop “poor mouthing” and spend the market rate.

mccann and francoeur are best buddies but mccann is signed long-term and not francoeur. francoeur says it has to be good for everybody – and francoeur is right about that. 2 years of renewal rather than signing a new contract will cost francoeur a little money – but maybe a lot of capital with the organization. wren says wren holds no grudges – but wren is supposed to say that. francoeur is the golden hair but so was tom glavine before money and union took precedence. nothing says francoeur has to sign long-term and nothing says the braves have to continue with francoeur as the new face of the franchise. could be mccann. could be escobar. could be kj with an all-star year. everything in professional sport is fragile – and everything is driven by money. yes, francoeur and francoeur’s agent may be coy but there are a lot of outfielders on this team and not enough places to play all of them. frenchy could be an all-star this year or frenchy could be a flop. not sure. would bet on a better year than last, but not sure. whatever is done, jimmy smith hopes it is done privately with francoeur and the braves. journalist doesn’t really want to read about the ugly parts of the game when journalist would much rather enjoy baseball. . . . and do the francoeur parents come into play here? can’t get a read on that but just wondering. oh, well, francoeur would appear to be on top of the world. hope it stays that way for the kid and that francoeur becomes the next dale murphy. if not, minnesota is not so bad . . .

Hello my big Braves friends! Could not log on to Braves and Stuff with my regular name: Mr. Fly, sleuth reporter. WordPress needs to be more friendly to sleuth reporters. Maybe it’s my small computer. Anyway…

Me has been in Florida all winter, working, investigating, writing, eating, hanging on walls and visiting with many cute little orange blossoms. So many groves, such little time. Now am ready for peach orchards. Blossoms should be there soon.

Me got to meet flbravesgirl and Grinch. Took pictures of her cheesecake… mmm… and also visited FBG at work. She is right, Mr. Grinch is a gentleman but once he opened a door for FBG and forgot to hold it open for me. Maybe he didn’t know I was following behind. Glass doors are dangerous to sleuth reporters. Me took some pictures of Grinch too. In between baseball and sunburns he was studying. Mr. Ginch is a good Grinch.

Me is in Vermont right now with Lew. The artist is missing Florida already. Me has taken pictures of him making his way back home. Lew will have to readjust to the cold weather. Snorkling is not safe in Vermont.

Sent some How I Spent My Winter Vacation pictures to Carolina Lady. Many fun places were visited. Africa on Safari, Antarctica to see Polar Bears… even flew in a jet. Pictures should be up soon.

Have to catch a Delta back to Orlando now.

You know, I never really thought about it before, but why did the Braves feel compelled to sign McCann to that long term deal, and not Frenchy??? Catchers are a premium, it’s true….but they are more likely to get injured as well. Much less likely a right fielder will be out for extended periods of time. Even though I am against Frenchy playing EVERY day, he does play every game…. And Gil, you are right, it is time for the Braves to stop crying poor all the time. And Wren won’t hold a grudge??? If you will pardon the expression, that’s mighty white of him!
Let me see if I get this….pay him less per year than a fellow teammate who came up at the same time, don’t sign him long term, and then ask for a hometown discount in 3-4 years??? Makes no sense. He has a lot of family I seem to recall, in the Boston area???? I am sure if he became more selective in the next few years, they would be glad to take him off our hands….. 😡

JJS… People must remember that Francoeur’s parents relocated to Georgia because of a job opportunity. He also played hardball with the Braves when he signed with the Braves initially. Yes, it is tough to be reminded constantly it is a business when we want it to be a game….

Question… How many World Series did the Braves win with Andruw in center field? Same could be asked of Tex and Frenchy… Maybe that is a cheap shot but it takes a team to win a team sport. It is why the Rockies and the Diamondbacks are such feel good stories. They prove you need to have good players but you do not have to have superstars.

I think the Braves have to look past the next two years and think about who will fill the void when Chipper and Tex are gone. Javy??

Sooner than that, we’ll see the Tex cards played. He’s holding a good hand… but from everything I see, read and hear… including Tex’s comments, my bet is he’s gone after this year if not sooner.

So, are you saying if the braves are somehow out of it by July/August, he gets traded???
It’s really hard for me to envision a way for this team to be out of it that early…but….lose Chipper, Tex, McCann, or Frenchy, and the team isn’t the same, is it???
I can’t see the Phils or Mets getting way ahead of us either, with the question marks each team has with their starters,(And Delgado’s hip now) But, you just never know! how many times have we seen teams that look like can’t miss teams, only to scratch our heads in June as to how they are so far out of it??? Phils used to be one of those teams….

Why would a franchise type player sign for Mark Derosa money when the only benefit is for a faceless corporation’s bottom line?

Gil, this is one reason why uh, Chipper, you know, is so beloved in the ATL. He could have made a lot more money elsewhere but chose to stay where he was comfortable and help JS build a good team around him. The same thing could be said for Glavine Smoltz too.

I know that Frenchy wants to get paid. He deserves to get paid a ton. Let’s hope he doesn’t get all A-Rod on us. You see how well that’s worked out for him.

Who knows what behind the scenes discussions are going on with Frenchy. A girl that works at my company has a boyfriend that played in High School with McCann and Frenchy. One day the scouts showed up to watch the phenom Francoeur. McCann has a great day that day and crushed several home runs. They were both set up to be signed that day (or whatever the equivalent is in High School).

In the meantime, they are our boys and I’ll hope they’ll become superstars. Better yet, hope the Braves become a good team this year. Superstars put up good numbers and make lots of money. Good teams win World Series. Well, then there’s Boston.

20 Mil a year would be enough for me, I ain’t greedy! :p I think these folks don’t think per year, it’s over the life of a contract. Lets say if the Braves offered 20 Mil a year(A big IF) How many years would they go out?? 5? 6? What is the longest contract a braves player ever signed??? You know at his age, with his agent…if they can get 10 years, they will go for it. But, let’s say for arguments sake 6 years is what every team is offering. Between the Mets(Why not replace an old guy with Tex, AND hurt the Braves?) Yankees, Red Sox(If Manny is out after this year, they could trade either Youk, or Lowell to make room at first) or Angels someone is going to offer 22-25 Mil a year. So, if the braves offered 108 Mil (6 years x 18 Mil) vs 132 to 150 Mil by some other club…that’s a 24 to 42 million difference over the life of the contract…… I forget, how much did he turn down from the Rangers????

Berigan, who the heck knows about Tex. I’m not usually one to speculate about such things because there is no way of knowing. Then again, like I said… just gut. Not stomach lining. No fainting…

This year we’ll see what kind of GM Wren is. Is he a bottom line company guy or a baseball man (unless he has corporate handcuffs). Will Liberty invest in a winning team or field another middle of the pack also ran? Will Bobby break tradition, lose his playbook and play smallball, not burn out the bully and remember the bunt? So many questions…

Now I’ll stop speculating on what could, would or should be. It’s Spring. Hope springs eternal. The grass is growing. The sound of popping leather and the crack of bats can be heard. The smell of peanuts and Cracker Jack is wafting through. I love this time of year.

Most big name players are insured but insurance companies will not underwrite a player’s contract for more than three years. Think they know something the rest of us don’t?

As always, pitching is the key. The Marlins have some good players but Joe Geradi (sp) ruined a lot of good young arms during his brief stay in South Florida. You just cannot get 200 innings out of a young pitcher without ruining him. Just a fact… Not the way we want it to be, just the way it is…

Then he threw his bat and said, “stupid”. Stupid bat? Stupid ball? Stupid pitch? Stupid hamstring? Wonder if he meant that he was stupid because he didn’t stretch before swinging? Does Wren or Cox or trainers or doctors or coaches believe in stretching before taking the field? Have these pro players been taught? Maybe Chipper did stretch properly and it was just bad luck. Hopefully not serious.

Does anyone here know if Braves warm up properly? McCann is doing Yoga, right? Still? Does he stretch’em out before games?

Will Chipper play 150+ games this year? Now, that would be a stretch.

Hey everybody! I’ve been away from the laptop for a couple of days…

    Happy Birthday yesterday, JJS!

I have popped in briefly to catch up, but now I must fly (no offense, sleuth) back out. I am doing a friend a favor and recording some bass tracks for his band tomorrow night. I have alot to learn between now and then.

    C-ya’ll later… 😀

Houston and Braves tied at 3 each, Braves bat in the bottom of the 6th inning. Hampton threw 2 scoreless. Yunel has two ribbies, Diaz one. Chipper is, uh… playing cards in the clubhouse. Prado is playing 3rd (batting .100).

    2B: Escobar (1, Sampson), Francoeur (2, Sampson).
TB: Johnson; Escobar 2; Francoeur 2; Kotsay; Diaz; Jones, B.

    The kids are doing good.

Speaking of kids, Chop Seal… give this to your daddy from me.

Paladin, he’s just doing the best he can with what he’s got. Remember, we can’t pick our parents… even in a Telepod. Have an open mind… flies can be quite handsome. Movies and songs have been written about flies. Poems and books have been written about them. You just have to give’em a chance, that’s all. Don’t go all Vincent Price on me here. Besides, he’s mutant… and still evolving.

Mr. Fly has had other portraits made that might be a bit more appealing, so if it’ll make you happy I’ll give one of those a try sometime. Still, he can go anywhere virtually undetected. The little fella gets around.

You would think I could be gone for just a little while without somebody getting hurt…. Just goes to show you you cannot trust people to look out for themselves while your back is turned.

Which has the biggest impact, Chipper being out for the Braves or Delgado for the Mets? Goes to show you how quickly a team’s fortune can change. At least he has three weeks to heal. Ha!!! Like that is going to happen. I played 3 years of football with torn hamstrings. It was why I was a lineman and not a running back.

Well, it is a break for somebody. Prado? Javy? Lillibridge? Pena?

And happy belated birthday to the esteemed Ugandan Journalist. May you have many more happy returns of the day.

and what is the sentiment for chipper jones today? unavoidable injury? sissy? prone to injury? doesn’t prepare properly? needs to stretch? should fix the toes and the rest will take care of itself? many questions.

    COMMENTARY –

had it been a young, swedish woman offering hamstring massage, chipper might have attended this morning’s voluntary hamstring massage session. instead, it was jeff porter and chino cadahia (wears many hats). so, chipper passed on hamstring massage this morning before stepping into the cage. alas, a hamstring was tweaked. an invigorating hamstring massage with a liberal application of wd-40 and chipper would probably have had a good turn in the cage and would have started the game. instead, the hamstring was tweaked and the day was lost. many know that chipper often sustains another injury within a few days of the first. hamstring, oblique, toe, heel, ankle, hammock bone, headache, back, groin(s), and farhead. which one will it be? no matter, chipper must attend future hamstring massage sessions.

Berigan, a lot of things have to go “right” for the Braves this year but a lot of things have to go “right” for everyone in the hunt. The road to the playoffs has been littered with teams that look great on paper but don’t perform up to standard or are devastated by injury.

Don’t get me wrong. I really, really like this team. There are still some question marks but that’s what spring training is for. If I were a Mets fan, I’d be very nervous. They have some potentially serious injury issues and there rotation isn’t nearly as deep as the Braves. Frankly, the Phillies make me more nervous than the Mets do.

I saw part of the Smoltz/Glavine interview on ESPN today. Good stuff. Who did Donald choose, and which Donald are you referring to?

(voice over) Number ninety-seven: a radio.

voice on radio: And now the BBC is proud to present a brand new radio drama series: The Death of Mary, Queen of Scots. Part One: The Beginning.

    (music)

man’s voice: Yoo arrr Mary, Queen of Scots?
    woman’s voice: I am!
(sound of violent blows being dealt, things being smashed, awful crunching noises, bones being broken, and other bodily harm being inflicted. All of this accompanied by screaming from the woman.)

    (music fades up and out)

voice: Stay tuned for part two of the Radio Four Production of “The Death of Mary, Queen of Scots”, coming up…almost immediately.

    (music)
(sound of saw cutting, and other violent sounds as before, with the woman screaming. Suddenly it is silent.)

    man’s voice: I think she’s dead.
    woman’s voice: No I’m not!
(sounds of physical harm and screaming start again.)

    (music fades up and out)
voice: that was episode two of “The Death of Mary, Queen of Scots”, specially adapted for radio by Gracie Fields and Joe Frazier. And now, Radio Four will explode.

    (music)

    the radio explodes.

two old women are sitting on the couch listening to the radio when it
explodes. One looks at the other:

    1: We’ll have to watch the Telly-vision!
    2: Aaaaw.
(they turn the couch so it’s facing the television. One turns the television

2: They don’t stamp animals “Property of the Zoo”!!! You can’t stamp a huge lion!!
1: (resolute) They stamp them when they’re small.
2: Besides, penguins don’t come from the zoo! they come from the antartic!

(the television warms up: a man is sitting behind a news desk)

man: And now the penguin on top of your television set will explode.

    (the penguin explodes)

    Conclusion: Busy Day?

Premise: Busy? I just spent four hours burying the cat.

Conclusion: Four hours to bury a cat?

Premise: Yes – it wouldn’t keep still.

Conclusion: Oh – it wasn’t dead, then?

Premise: No, no – but it’s not at all well, so as we were going to be on the
    safe side.

Conclusion: Quite right – you don’t want to come back from Sorrento to a dead cat. It’d be so anticlimactic. Yes, kill it now, that’s what I say. We’re going to have to have our budgie put down.

Premise: Really – is it very old?

Conclusion: No, we just don’t like it. We’re going to take it to the vet tomorrow.

Premise: Tell me, how do they put budgies down, then?

Conclusion: Well, it’s funny you should ask that, because I’ve just been
reading a great big book about how to put your budgie down, and apparently you can either hit them with the book, or you can shoot them just there, just above the beak.

Premise: Just there? Well, well, well. ‘Course, Mrs Essence flushed hers down the loo.

Conclusion: No, you shouldn’t do that – no, that’s dangerous. They breed in the sewers!

I’ve probably seen Holy Grail more than any other movie ever produced. I caught it at the “Midnight Movie” almost every Friday when I was a teenager. And Mrs. Raisins is a fan of it as well. My 12 year old son saw it for the first time 2 years ago and has seen it twice since. (He loves the Black Knight – It’s just a flesh wound!) My 5 year old daughter has yet to experience it, but it’s comin’… 😀

My dad got me started when I was little: Python, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, Fry and Laurie (funny how chicks will watch Hugh Laurie do House MD but not the 20 years of insanely hilarious comedy that actually made him famous in the first place; most don’t even know he’s British), etc. No, the only britcoms they’ll usually watch are “Absolutely Fabulous” and whatever the name of that one is that stars the nosy old woman named Hyacinth. And that one about the department store. Oh, well.

Sir Arthur Strieb-Griebling being interviewed about his failing restaurant “The Frog & Peach”. To wit:

Interviewer: Good evening. Don’t you feel, again, you’re at a disadvantage because of your menu? I mean-

Strieb-Griebling: The menu! Oh dear! Yes, that is- Oh! This has been a terrible hindrance to us building up a business. The menu is the most- have you seen it?

    Interviewer: Yes I have.

Strieb-Griebling: It’s the most appalling thing. You start with- what’s that?

    Interviewer: Spawn cocktail.

Strieb-Griebling: Spawn cocktail. One of the most revolting dishes known to man. Then there’s only two other dishes really. There’s Frog a la peche, which is frog done in Cointreau with a peach stuffed in its mouth. And, ah, then, of course, there’s Peche a la frog, which is really not much to write home about. A waiter comes to your table. He’s got this huge peach which is covered in boiling liqueur, you see, and he slices it open to reveal about two thousand black tadpoles squiggling about. It’s one of the most disgusting sights I’ve ever seen. God, it turns me over to think of it. Squiggle, squiggle they go.

Interviewer: Rather nauseating. Who does the cooking?

Strieb-Griebling: My wife does the cooking and, luckily, she does the eating as well. An amazing creature. Of course, she’s not a well woman. She hates being lowered into the well to feed the frogs. Every day she goes down screaming. AAAAAHHHHH! The frogs don’t like it either, and spit the flies back in her face. ‘ribbit, ribbit…. ppppppppppphhhhhhhh… ribbit, ribbit……. pppppppphhhhhh”

Top of the morning, everybody. Finally, the move is complete. Settling into the new home. Still must get my sports area all set up — probably a week or so before all of that is taken care of — but for the most part, everything is as it should be. The Wurlitzer is propped up on top of my bookcase for now, so we’re officially moved in as far as I’m concerned!

And glad Lew and Grinch made it back home safe. Thanks very much for the great reports and insights from Lake Buena Vista. I’ll be there with you next year. Promise!

Great weekend for the ballclub, Chipper’s tweak notwithstanding. Doesn’t look to be too serious, however, and in the grand scheme of things, missing three or four games now isn’t like missing three or four games at the end of March.

Hampton looks like he really threw it well yesterday. That’s a huge step, the biggest to date, on his comeback trail. Like most, I will remain skeptical until he can take the ball every fifth day for more than one or two turns. But if he’s throwing his breaking stuff this sharp already, that only can be viewed as a huge positive. Once he gets his legs under him and really gets back into total game shape, if that left arm of his is healthy, that’s a heck of a fourth starter this team just added to its rotation.

Gotta say, I don’t buy much into exhibition wins and losses, especially early. But it’s encouraging at this point to see the way the team is hitting. Josh Anderson has grabbed that fourth outfield spot with both hands (don’t wanna say I told you so, but for the six weeks before the Kotsay deal, I was saying this kid could play center field every day and handle it well).

Got to see just a bit of Jurrjens on TV Friday (before actually turning it off and disconnecting it for the move). Looked good. Hung a couple of curves, but everybody does that early. That slider of his is nasty, and he has plenty of giddy-up on the heater. I think as of right now, the fifth spot is his to lose. We’ll see what Jo Jo has today against the Mets.

OK, back at it. Just wanted to say hi. Hope all is well.

    The Scribe abides.

Grinch-John has the Pentax pictures in folders on Shannon’s computer. I don’t know if he included them on the disc. I haven’t really had time to check it out yet. What I saw of them was before he put them on the disc.

Chris-I use Picassa 2 to edit my artwork for printing (enlarging, setting contrast, etc). I’ll check it out and see what I can come up with.

Scribe-I’ve been on the Josh Anderson bandwagon all throughout spring training. I’m really convinced this kid is going to shock the hell out of people. He is going to be a really good player, In my opinion. He is extraordinarily fast and has good work ethic and baseball smarts.

Now, King Arthur-This Python nonsense must cease and desist right here and now. You don’t mess with King Arthur-It is closely akin to sacrilege. You can tug on Superman’s cape and pull the proverbial mask off the Old Lone Ranger, but you don’t mess with Arthur and the Boys or Robin Hood. It just isn’t acceptable. Y’all would do well to remember that.

I’m better looking and more refined than Paladin. He’s right on this oe, though. Monty Python is pathetic and has almost always been so. The only thing they ever did that was remotely decent was Time Bandits and I don’t think it was really their project. Some of them just appeared in it. Maybe that’s why it was decent.

    Man: Oh, this is futile.
    Mr. Vibrating: No it isn’t.
Man: I came here for a good argument.

Man: But that’s not just saying, “No it isn’t.”
    Mr. Vibrating: Yes it is.

I LOVE Ernie Kovacs, Paladin!!! There was a great documentary they used to run, perhaps on Disney of all channels(They used to run a nice one on Nat King Cole back in the day as well) Too bad The Comedy channel doesn’t run his show anymore, but black and white would hurt the kiddies eyes I guess…

And Lew, I never was much of a fan of the MP films, much more their TV show….

Comedy is much like beer in some respects. Some folks like German beer, some folks like dark beer, some folks like lager, some folks like ale, etc. It doesn’t mean any one is better or worse than another. It’s simply a matter of taste.

Along the same analogy, beers are best served at the right temperature and in the right environment. The B&S world is hardly the place to enjoy Monty Python, unless you are a fan, in which case there is no bad place.

Bottom line is: All of these fine examples are worthy of enjoyment and acclaim by those who enjoy them.

Yep, that’s me, Voice of Diplomacy! 😀

Saw Tull in Jacksonville once and it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever attended. Aqualung was the tour. Good stuff.

Speaking of Shirley, I’m not one to seek out Hollywood types, but I once had cocktails with Leslie Nielson. He’s a good all around regular kinda guy who doesn’t take himself seriously. Probably why he’s such a good comedic actor. Also saw him at a Spoleto Festival world premier of an Arthur Miller play, American Clock, at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston. Near Klobber’s Saloon. Was a great play and a great venue. Nielson is quite a dramatic actor on stage as well as film.

Now, for baseball tie-in to all this: Dock Street Theatre is near Klobbers. Klobber is a baseball fan. Leslie Nielson was in an Arthur Miller play… Miller married Marilyn Monroe… Monroe married Joltin’ Joe Dimaggio… more baseball connections! Four degrees and done. Wonder if Kevin Bacon can play center?

    The Lost Balloonist

A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He lowered altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. He shouted to the boater, “Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.”

The boater consulted his portable GPS and replied, “You’re in a hot air balloon approximately 30 feet above a ground elevation of 18 feet above sea level. You are 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.”

The balloonist rolled his eyes and said, “You must be a Republican.”

“I am,” replied the boater. “How did you know?”

“Well,” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and I’m still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help to me.”

The boater smiled and responded, “You must be a Democrat.”

“I am,” replied the balloonist. “How did you know?”

“Well,” said the boater, “you don’t know where you are or where you’re going. You’ve risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise that you have no idea how to keep, and you expect ME to solve your problem. You’re in EXACTLY the same position you were in before we met, but somehow now, it’s MY fault.
