27: Idylls (and idols) of Spring, and their subterranean counterparts

by The Grinch

PALMETTO, GA – Spring, as a season, is traditionally about new beginnings. Metaphorically, mythologically, and even literally (don’t forget about all the various forms of flora and fauna that reappear). Even I become bored with my latest batch of stolen presents around the beginning of April. There comes a time when I stand at the edge of Grinch Mountain, reduced from my winter fasting, shed my scaly winter skin like a snake and emerge a smoother, younger Grinch with slightly lighter, glossier plumage. I celebrate by sacrificing a few young maidens (they flock to the mountain in droves), cracking a beer and turning on TBS. Well, at least until TBS decided “Raymond” reruns were a better idea than the Braves.

Anyhoo, every new baseball season also brings with it a new crop of young children as fans; kids who learn from their fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, how incredibly important and wonderful baseball is and it becomes an integral part of their lives for the first time. Ballplayers aren’t lucky or greedy or mean or business-first to them, or even real people. They’re heroes. Genuine heroes that are looked up to as tiny gods. Do you all remember what that felt like in its pure, unadulterated form? The players know this too (though not as many as used to, alas), and many go out of their way to make a little gesture to kids knowing how important it is to their young lives. Watching it happen over and over on the faces of children on tv and at the ballpark are some of my favorite reasons for watching.

Thus I attended my first Spring Training camp this year at the tender age of 34, expecting to see lots of parents and kids down there getting autographs and sharing magical moments. I was not disappointed in this; there was many a kind ballplayer or coach, and many a happy child (and happy parents)…I could list
a number of scenes that were positively heartwarming.

However, everything was almost ruined on my last day by a large number of truly reprehensible people that made the entire experience almost collapse for everyone else. A bunch of thirty and forty-something businessmen shoved their way through the decent folk and spent the day making everyone’s lives miserable. They kept calling out to the players such gems as
“Hey, we paid twelve bucks to get in here, you guys gonna come over here and sign or what,” and “You know how freakin’ long we drove to get down here?” If those weren’t helpful enough, they finally started insulting Bobby while he was trying to observe batting practice, calling his intelligence, strategy and
morals into question quite loudly then demanding he come over and sign. When Bobby finally responded “I can’t right this minute, I’m trying to do my job” they responded “Job? You call this a job? We work 50-odd hours a week for 30 grand a year, now THAT’s a job.” Etc. Finally, the very mild mannered old man watching the gate came over and asked them to please tone it down. When a few players actually came over to sign anyway, these guys had stuff ready and charged to the front, knocking parents and kids alike out of the way. (One of them stepped on my foot to get in between me and McCann while his buddy glared at me from behind a camera tripod he was holding like a bat in case I made a move, forcing me to pack up and walk off before I started a riot).

I found out from others later that these guys had been around recruiting kids to go forward and get balls signed, then bring them back for 10 bucks. Another guy managed to track down Hank (who was trying not to be seen), got his autograph anyway, then got ANGRY because he’d signed in sharpie.

Now, I’m no stranger to ugly people, and normally this wouldn’t have bothered me, but it was all in front of the kids. Kids of parents who’d taken off work and come from long ways off to experience something special might remember those %$^#s instead of what they were meant to.

These kind of people, greedy players like Tex and A-Rod, greedy owners who do things like change TBS’ format (trust me, this move alone will reduce the Braves’ popularity around the country by a large margin), irresponsible owners who fling ridiculous contracts at players that throw everything else off
balance, Scot Boras (who needs no introduction), $7 beers, $6 hot dogs, $3 bottled water, etc…all this is leading towards the destruction of yet another sport I love (I officially held a funeral for NASCAR in 2002, and boxing died 10 years earlier).

I’m sure that we all have a huge number of fond baseball memories (many of which have been shared on this blog already) and I for one have no desire to see this get any worse. If (and that’s a very, very big if) I ever have any Grinchlets, I want to take the same pride in introducing something pure and wonderful to them as was done for me at an early age without
having to explain all the disgusting stuff that has risen to the surface of the sport like a bloated corpse in a sewer drain.

What can be done? Anything?

Or do we just let it’s distilled essence deteriorate gradually and eventually fade into dust like so many sepia-toned heroes of the past?

What a post, Grinch! Thanks for the insights and thoughts!

What a shame that such behavior is every where you look. How about a certain blog? It’s those same people. Business men?? Still boorish, rude and inexcusable behavior. Everywhere. Who raised these people?? Oh, the mind set!

Nice job Grinch. I’ve seen guys like that too and they disgust me. As an autograph collector, I am ashamed to be associated with people such as them. They are the guys that make the genuine collectors look bad and make the players NOT want to sign for anyone — children included.

By the way, was Robert in that group? I can only imagine him leaning over the railing shouting, “Hey Donk, when you get your finger out of your nose would you come over and sign? And bring your own pen, wouldya!

I have always lived by the credo that it is better to be boorish than boring. Not really. I hate rudeness, in any form. If I seem rude on here it is because the twinkle is not bright enough to be seen over cyber-miles. Anyway, I was raised to say please, thank you, excuse me and all the other civilities of civilization. When I began to see sons sitting with their Mothers in a restaurant wearing a hat, I knew the barbarians were amongst us. That is one of the reasons I moved out here in the country. It is not like the good ole days, but it is a whole lot nearer than in Hotlanta. I’m still a fan, but thankfully not a resident.

Well done Grinch. Truth well told.

The TBS’s, the can’t-get-enough players, owners, agents and the boorish fans all have a symbiotic relationship and they each contribute to an ugly side of not just baseball but society.

To enjoy sports… like much of life today, we’ll occasionally put blinders on. Speaking up like you did in your post will be the eventual solution. By the way, when you have Grinchlets, it is they who will be signing autographs. They will be the attraction. Hey, the world is going green anyway.

Leftover uke stuff from last blog:

Grinch, I used to play (try to play) guitar but was led astray by other pursuits. Still get a hankering now and then. Been considering a Ukelele. But then, I’d probably break it eventually trying to hit some old Jimmy Page, Pete Townshend or Keith Richards licks. Maybe a new stereo would be better.

Actually I have a uke. A baritone uke(tenor guitar)very much like the one played by Nick Reynolds of the Kingston Trio. “Hang down your head, Tom Dooley, hang down your head and cry”. “Scotch and Soda, gigger of gin, oh what a spot you got me in”. I also played the tenor banjo, but strokes took that away, too. I don’t understand much about music these days, but I was on the cutting edge in the 60s and 70s. That’s 19– you smart asses. But, the banjo and my voice, such as it was, was a part of a functioning Barbershop Quartet. We weren’t real good but we were chick magnets and what else counts? 🙄

They were all wearing Mets’ regalia. Typical. Unfortunate, but typical. It is the reason that I will never sell another piece of artwork that has a player’s signature on it. Grinch’s story reminds me of when I was at Dodgers ST a few years ago. Hideo Nomo was there and about five of us stopped him and asked him to sign. He started signing and some moron in Mets gear starts talking trash about some game winning grand slam Nomo had given up to the Mets a few years ago. What and idiot! I was ready to kick him across Holmann stadium. Thankfully, I don’t think Nomo understood enough English to be ticked off.

Carolina Lady, Grinch will take you to dinner and open car doors and restaurant doors and pull chairs out for the Lady to sit and will not burp after dinner and serenade you with heavy metal songs and all will be done with such a gentlemanly manner. He will pour your no-caffeine Diet Coke so that there is no fizz to make you sneeze. He just got back from spring gentleman training where his skills were polished and he received high marks. Just be careful slow dancing… uh, those feet. You know.

Grinch had a headline changed? But the headline is good… like it. Maybe the original is better though. We’ll just see about that when it pops back up. Hate to lose a nice word like subterranean. It’s an illustrative word… like primordial or cretinous, plus they all describe your typical Met fan so well. Lew would know this well and may freely add them to his troll repertoire.

Just in case the headline gets changed, here’s a subterranean counterpart of the good homesick blues kind.

And now baseball, here’s a list of Mets position players and their various ailments. This is from foxsports.com. Enjoy!

Normally I don’t feel bad for the Mets – and now is no exception, but today they added Moises Alou to the list of injured Met players, sending him back to NY for an MRI on what WFAN in New York is reporting as a possible torn groin (which always makes me shudder).

Just take a look at what’s going on with the Mets only two weeks into the spring:

    Jose Reyes (SS) …….. healthy
    Luis Castillo (2B) …….. OUT — knees
    David Wright (3B) ……..healthy
Carlos Beltran (CF) ….. OUT — knees
    Carlos Delgado (1B) …. OUT — hip
Moises Alou (LF) ………OUT — groin
    Ryan Church (RF) ……..OUT– concussion
    Brian Schneider (C) ……OUT — hamstring
Johan Santana (LHP) … pitching today, so presumably OK

Now let’s look at the projected bench, too:
    Ramon Castro (C) ……….. healthy
Ruben Gotay (SS) ………. OUT — ankle
    Damion Easley (INF/OF) .. OUT — ankle
    Endy Chavez (OF) ……….. OUT — hamstring/ankle
Marlon Anderson …………. OUT — bruised chest

Throw in El Duque who has yet to pitch this spring because he’s old and Pedro who has as much chance of making 30 starts as Carrot Top has of winning an Oscar and this is not looking good for the Mets right now. Though it is early and maybe they’ll get through this early – but given their age and lack of depth I highly doubt it.

Top of the evening, denizens. Life indeed is good, as I sit in the garage with a Coke Zero, a 3-Musketeers bar, the radio on and baseball all over the Internet. It won’t be long, folks, until we get this thing cranking for real.

Grinch, as I told ya via text tonight, great job on ye old blog lead. In constructing my baseball garage, I found some autographs garnered 20-30 years ago at old Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. The thought of men paying children money to get autographs for them is sickening and absolutely goes against the innocence and wholesomeness of the game, which drew us to it in the first place.

Alas, this is the world we live in; I, too, would’ve voted for the riot. Next year, Grinch, you and I will block like we’re playing O-line in Athens.

Man, I cannot wait until this thing starts. Forget the past two years; gonna make up for that in a big way in 2008. Just let everybody keep on chattering about the Mets and Phillies … gonna have a mighty big surprise for them come October.

Scribe, nice to see you. I hope that the move went well. Moving sucks but I hope you’re in a bigger, nicer, whatever-makes-you-happy place (with a lower mortgage payment)!

People such as those described by Grinch are truly despicable beings. I can’t imagine paying a child to go get an autograph. If they weren’t such idiots they could probably get them on their own, but undoubtedly they’re not bright enough to figure that out.

Guys like them remind me of the Mets trolls that show up “over there”. To have the nerve to come to someone’s place and disrespect them there, especially BC! It’s disgusting.

That’s sweet of you but it’s the truth. Some people are meant to be the center of attention & others are meant to be wallflowers. I am most definately a wallflower. Any attempt (by others or myself) to call attention to me usually has disastrous results.

  71. 71 chrisklob March 6, 2008 at 11:25 pm

FBG, there’s a happy median there. It’s not an either/or situation. While I will never be accused of wanting to be the center of attention, I have made great strides in not being a wallflower. Besides, your personality hardly matters when it comes to asking for autographs unless you’re like one of those losers that Grinch told us about.

You should go to some minor league games this season. I know you live somewhere on Florida’s west coast. There are several minor league parks that you could go to and “get your feet wet”. Minor leaguers are generally pretty nice and I would imagine that it would be extraordinarily easy there since Florida State League games generally have very poor attendance. After you become a little more comfortable you could start going to ST to ask for big leaguers autographs. It’s not exactly rocket science. I KNOW you could do it.

I’d be glad to give you some tips about how to get started. I even know a guy who’d probably be willing to help you out. He lives in Ocala and travels all over central Florida to get autographs.

Oh, I know about the crowd of people trying to get stuff signed at the ballpark. Spent a lot of spring days at McKechnie Field. It’s not worth it to me to brave that for a signature. If the Braves came over here I might feel differently. I jumped in the vortex of autograph hounds once years ago for Steve Avery (yeah, I had a crush on him). Now if I could have gotten over to Disney earlier I’d have had to pull together some courage & ask guys to sign.

  73. 73 chrisklob March 6, 2008 at 11:47 pm

You should try going to a game during the regular season. As I said before, attendance is very low (often less than 1000 per game) and there are very few collectors. You can build your confidence there and then when spring rolls around you can be more at ease about asking for autographs.

    Lew, or anybody else knowledgeable,

What is the equivalence of inches of snow to inches of rain? Let me rephrase: If you get 12 inches of snow, about how much rain would that come out to be after melting? (Remember, we get about 3 inches of snow every 2 years, so if that’s an ignorant question, blame it on lack of exposure.)

With snow in the forecast I guess I had better get to the market while there is still a loaf of bread on the shelf. Around here when people hear snow, they rush to the store and buy like there is no tomorrow, although the snow won’t last a day. Also, at the full-service service station there will be a couple of goobers alternately scratching their head and hind parts while looking at a set of tire chains. There will be others with chains although in lite snow and ice, chains are worse than not having any thing. My Ranger has mudn’snows on the back and enough dents so I don’t really care if a few more are inflicted on me. Think I will have some chilli tonight. Wwhy do they call it chilli when it is really hotty? OK, later.

Hillbilly-I’m not certain, but it is something like a foot of snow equals 2-3 inches of rain. Again, not positive, but it’s a small percentage.

However, when one has 8-10 foot drifts all over town from an entire winter of snow-and even more in the Green Mountains and up around Stowe- it will be more than enough to flood the White and Connecticut rivers-especially if partially broken up ice flows are still in the rivers.

I don’t care what anyone says, a pitcher who suffers that type of injury in ST, DID NOT spend enough time during the winter months getting himself in shape. Methinks that after he pulled that hammy he, like the rest of us, became a couchpotato.

Gil, racin’ in Feb??? Good grief!!! How in the world do you get traction on a cold track, anyway??? So….NASCAR has always been about the money then, eh????

Gil, I sold a lot on ebay thru the years, not so much now. VHS tapes, then CD’s and DVD’s. Worked in many book stores , but almost never find books worth any money!!! Used to find more stuff than I ever had the time or money to put up….Media Play had tons of Bargain and used cds and VHS. I would buy stuff that I thought would be of interest (took more chances when I found cds really cheap, like 1 dollar)wrote down titles that I thought might be out of print, look them up, and go back and get the ones that were OOP. Made a pretty good living for a few years that way. But, one by one, stores closed down, or stopped getting the good bargain/used stuff. No more Media Plays, Tower, wherehouse music, etc….
Downloading is an issue for sure,(Especially with younger folks) but I think more people buy cds, dvds, online…I know I do, since no stores have the old movies and jazz cds I have interest in, in stock.

So I will need to find something to do outside of the house, someday soon….working out of the house sure helps when you have a bad back, stomach, sleep issues….TMI, I know, I know! 😉

Gee Chris, only 4 interviews??? Good grief again!!! CIA job, or just FBI???

A friend sent a online job wanted ad….one of the very few that sounded interesting to me….but I haven’t needed a resume in more than a decade. They even wanted a watchacallit, a Cover letter??? Apparently, I was smarter 10 years ago than now….hurt my widdle bwain to even attempt this taske without a book in front of me….

BAS; Possibly you are not serious, but chianti wines go back to the 15th century. When I was coming along it was basically a cheap little wine served in baskets at Italian restaurants. It is now a more complex, and more expensive wine. I like it because I like red wines but chianti is about the only one that “threats” me well. I think it is the absence of ingredients that make merlots and, particularly, cabernets what they are. Anyway, I’m keeping the chianti industry in business.

Great stuff on Clemente! Did not know he was in the USMC. Camp Lejeune is not far from my location. It was partly built on my relatives’ land which was condemned by the gov’t to build that base. They ‘relocated’ thousands from old gravesites to new gov’t cemeteries, but they lost the names and information on most of them – so many ancestors/relatives are forever lost.

Paladin, you can still buy chianti in baskets. They are called “fiascos” (not making that up). It is still relatively inexpensive. The Italian wine industry underwent a renaissance of sorts back in the seventies. There was a lot of garbage wine being sold as “chianti” and a consortium was formed to bring quality levels up. You might have noticed a black rooster (Pedro’s?) on the neck label — this is their logo. So now, the overall quality level of Italian wine is much, much higher. Those straw-covered bottles were often thought of as “cheap” or poor quality then. Not so much any more now.

    Thus endeth today’s lesson.

And I’m sure it put you right out. Good night Paladin!

I have been busy this morning buying parts for my Mom’s Cadillac Deville that my youngest son wrecked last month… You have to be careful to watch out for shipping charges that are unreasonable but for the most part, one can get by on the cheap.

No real baseball news other than the over reaction to Hampton’s groin pull. Time for him to stretch it out and work the legs into shape. This is what spring training is all about. It is also why you need to be very deep in starting pitching…

Chris, I have a nesting pair of pileated woodpeckers in my rear woods. I saw one of their young birds last fall. As development encroached their habitat they become less visible. When I first moved here 5 years ago, I cut down a lot of trees along my driveway. Just before I took one of them down, I spotted one of the huge woodpeckers coming out of a nesting hollow. I left that tree until the following winter as I did not want to kill any young birds that may be residing there.

They are beautiful and my wife had never seen one until we moved to Mechanicsville. We also had a pair of fully mature red tail hawks until last year. Both must have been at least 24 inches tall. We had quite a running battle with them as they really like chicken…. At first I was going to kill them but decided not to as they were here first. They were just doing what hawks do.

We also spotted a golden eagle last summer. It was the first one I had seen in 35 years. They are pretty rare in this part of the country. I thought it might be a hawk at first but I got a really good look at it and it was unmistakable. We have quite a few bald eagles as they have made quite a comeback in the past 15 years.

Chris-Yes there is minor league baseball, though I have not attended-had other things needed dealing with. There is a team in Montpelier (about 35 miles up I89 called the Mountaineers. They have no specific affiliatation and is primarily a wooden bat league for college players. Some UGA guys have come up in recent years-when the Coach lets them. Then there are the Burlington Lake Monsters (yes, Lake Champlain has their own Nessie named Champ-there is some pretty convincing video evidence that it exists-even saw it on Discovery channel) that were the Vermont Expos and I believe they are still affiliated with the Nats.

Mr Gil-I also had the 2×4’s between they eyes and all it did was make me much less inclined to put up with anyone’s BS-must be why I’m as contentious as I am.

Wanted to second Jersey Gil’s admiration of Roberto Clemente. I saw him play quite a bit growing up as a kid in Philly, as there were only 8 NL teams and we played the Pirates about 16 times a season. Saw Clemente throw out runners at first from right field on SINGLES. I saw him do it way too many times-also saw Johnny Callison do it as well. It really takes a good arm and getting to the ball quickly. One of the more exiting plays in baseball from my way of thinking.

Jonny Callison…wow…i remeber when my uncle took me to the old Shibe Stadium….memory..lew…memory…That all we have, no steroid, just good baseball.

I came across a story with the headline: “Aggression on Job More Harmful Than Sexual Harassment.” This seemed worthwhile to explore until I came across what you see below as an “example of bullying”. I laughed out loud. Can you imagine the sex of the workers(or the person who wrote this article) who find these heinous things as “examples” of bullying?

“Bullying is often more subtle and may include behaviors that do not appear obvious to others,” Hershcovis said. “For instance, how does an employee report to their boss that they have been excluded from lunch? Or that they are being ignored by a co-worker? The insidious nature of these behaviors makes them difficult to deal with and sanction.”

This is not the one that I referred to above, but something to keep you busy until I finish dinner. A new telescope in Arizona is taking pictures with definition of galaxies 106 million light years from earth. Light travels at 186,282,396 miles per second. Figure out how long it would take a Ford Taurus to get there and how much gas it would burn, and how many “rest stops” would be required if a female was aboard. Take your time.

008….. I found that standing up to bullies to be the best means of ending the problem once and for all. Worst butt kicking ever received was at the hands of a 13 year old wise guy, I was only 6. I never stopped pounding his knees and ankles and he finally tired of hurting his hands while pummeling my head and face. He never picked on me again after that. Come to think of it, no one else ever did either.

What a strange, brave new world we live in! While waiting for someone to play with, I have been trying to figure out how to remove some “tags” from a jazz sampler cd I have made….My Jazz board has something called a BFT. Blindfold Test..an old jazz tradition where jazz musicians would have a record or two put on for a magazine interview, and they try to guess who the musicians are! So….one of the guys in Europe is trying to help this 19th century boy out….The “Tags” give away the artists, and song titles on some computers…so, he sent me a program to download, to edit out these tags…naturally, I had some problems. No, I gotta figure out how to upload these tracks so folks in Europeland can just go to the web and download them, sans tags…makes my head hurt.
Meanwhile this guy had a link to download some old jazz, and I am now listening to a whole cd of Charlie Christian, one of the pioneers of Electric guitar…..I have always been a fan of the guy, have a few cds…he might be better known outside of jazz circles today if he hadn’t died of TB in 1942, at the age of 25…..

Berigan-No that’s the first time I’ve ever heard the name. If he’s with the Braves, you have to realize that most of the minor league guys report much later and even the ones like Brandon Jones or Jordan Schafer, who are not expected to start the season in Atlanta, practice at fields that take quite a trek to get to-way too much for these old legs to endure-especially when all the good players like Tex and Chipper are on the main field.

Sounds like a real quality kid…..nice to hear.

Well, this one .!. is for you, Grincher and your palantonio. I didn’t say that Farve was one of the greatest players; I said he was one of my favorite players. So, were Bobby Lane and Sonny Jurgensen. They had fun on and off the field and they were fun to watch. If Bart Starr, Troy Aikeman(?), Otto Grahm(I’ll take Norm Van Brocklin)are your cup of tea, then sip it! The bottom line: Brett Favre has been one of the most exciting players to watch throughout his career. Period.

I agree. I always liked watching Favre. Interceptions in big games are exciting. I just got tired of the media worshipping him as if he were the messiah when in fact he’s spent his entire career making poor decisions and getting away with some of them ’cause he’s got a strong arm. He’s the most durable athlete ever, and he was a hell of a lot of fun to watch. Green Bay (and football in general) won’t be nearly as interesting without him. I’m just glad someone besides me has the stones to step up and say the guy wasn’t perfect.

First however, the field of players must be trimmed so we all can get a better view.

Perhaps the Braves have the back up third baseman in training with Lillibridge getting playing time. I made the statement several months ago to the effect that the Braves did not really have anyone in the minors ready to fill in at first base. I still think Nick Johnson would be a very good pick up for the Braves if the Nationals were willing to take a chance on Thorman and possibly Pena. Those players would fit the Nationals needs right now and Johnson would be a good go to guy if something were to happen to Tex.

it is not a perfect world, everyone one has some weaknesses except maybe the Tigers…. Awesome everyday lineup they have.

Our favorite thing in Mt. Dora was Cupcake Delights, a little bakeshop that makes only cupcakes. They make about a dozen different flavors per day. The yellow cake with fresh strawberry buttercream was particularly good. I’ll have to experiment & try to make a version of that frosting.

Anyway, they seem to do quite well. It was very busy all day long. My mom told me “You could do this”. I don’t know if Rabun Co. is big enough to support something like a specialty bakeshop.

Should Yates be guaranteed a job after a 5.18 ERA last year??? I mean, I think he has a very good arm, but still….if someone looks better in ST than him, considering last year, shouldn’t they be given a chance???? Of course, if Soriano doesn’t pitch soon, it may all be a moot point…

FBG-I’m just ready (I think) for the warmer weather to come. Of course, it would mean melted snow-tons of it-and the attendant floods. It warmed up enough last week to melt a foot or two off of the 10 foot tall drifts. However, since snow still covers all the drainage points, all it did was pool up and freeze overnight, making driving an adventure. The 35-50 MPH winds didn’t help much, either. I can’t wait for June (though it could snow then, too).

I don’t own a Pink Floyd “album” (Sorry Hillbilly!) because I have heard the same songs for 20+ years, and just don’t find them interesting. But, I saw the video for this song on VH1 classics, a few years back, off their Division Bell cd…High hopes

Ok, pretty far removed from “rock” but, if you don’t have any Floyd cds, have you ever heard it before??? They spent a lot on that video, so they must have pushed it once…but, noo…..lets hear Money, for the one billionth time instead! Grrr!!!

    I know, I know…just get XM…That’s what I will do, someday….

    Hey, Raisins!!

Berigan, wouldn’t say that – it just takes a lot of time when you start messing around in the primary programs and servers – and it takes so little to totally trash the whole thing! I’ve done it before elsewhere, but I make no claim to being an expert! 😆 I’d LOVE to have a wider variety of Smilies; just not something I can get into just now. And, at least, we do have them! 😀

They were talking about Lillibridge on radio yesterday…some funny comments about his “confidence” Someone(can’t think who) in the organization saw him at the beginning of the season last year and asked him what kind of a hitter he was, and Lillibridge said to him, “I’m a great hitter!” 🙂 When whomever it was saw him in September again, “he” said, You are right, you are a great hitter!

Also last spring training, Andruw, after watching him made some comments to Bobby about him…Bobby came up to Lillibridge later on and told him that Andruw thought he had a pretty good swing, to which Lillibridge said….He should!!!! Truer words have never been spoken, eh what???

    March 10, 2008
Spitzer Is Linked to Prostitution Ring
By DANNY HAKIM and WILLIAM K. RASHBAUM
ALBANY – Gov. Eliot Spitzer has been caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet with a high-priced prostitute at a Washington hotel last month, according to a person briefed on the federal investigation.

An affidavit in the federal investigation into a prostitution ring said that a wiretap recording captured a man identified as Client 9 on a telephone call confirming plans to have a woman travel from New York to Washington, where he had reserved a hotel room. The person briefed on the case identified Mr. Spitzer as Client 9.

Mr. Spitzer today made a brief public appearance during which he apologized for his behavior, and described it as a “private matter.”

“I have acted in a way that violates my obligation to my family and violates my or any sense of right or wrong,” said Mr. Spitzer, who appeared with his wife Silda at his Manhattan office. “I apologize first and most importantly to my family. I apologize to the public to whom I promised better.”

“I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself. I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family.”

Before speaking, Mr. Spitzer stood with his arm around his wife; the two nodded and then strode forward together to face more than 100 reporters. Both had glassy, tear-filled eyes, but they did not cry.

The governor spoke for perhaps a minute and did not address his political future.

He declined to take questions and promised to report back soon. As he went to leave, three reporters screamed out, “Are you resigning? Are you resigning?”, and Mr. Spitzer charged out of the room, slamming the door.

The governor learned that he had been implicated in the prostitution inquiry when a federal official contacted his staff last Friday, according to the person briefed on the case.

The governor informed his top aides Sunday night and this morning of his involvement. He canceled his public events today and scheduled the announcement for this afternoon after inquiries from The Times.

The governor’s aides appeared shaken before he spoke, and one of them began to weep as they waited for him to make his statement at his Manhattan office.

The man described as Client 9 in court papers arranged to meet with a prostitute who was part of the ring, Emperors Club VIP, on the night of Feb. 13. Mr. Spitzer traveled to Washington that evening, according to a person told of his travel arrangements.

The affidavit says that Client 9 met with the woman in hotel room 871 but does not identify the hotel. Mr. Spitzer stayed at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington on Feb. 13, according to a source who was told of his travel arrangements. Room 871 at the Mayflower Hotel that evening was registered under another name.

Federal prosecutors rarely charge clients in prostitution cases, which are generally seen as state crimes. But the Mann Act, passed by Congress in 1910 to address prostitution, human trafficking and what was viewed at the time as immorality in general, makes it a crime to transport someone between states for the purpose of prostitution. The four defendants charged in the case unsealed last week were all charged with that crime, along with several others.

Mr. Spitzer had a difficult first year in office, rocked by a mix of scandal and legislative setbacks. In recent weeks, however, Mr. Spitzer seemed to have rebounded, with his Democratic party poised to perhaps gain control of the state Senate for the first time in four decades.

Mr. Spitzer gained national attention when he served as attorney general with his relentless pursuit of Wall Street wrongdoing. As attorney general, he also had prosecuted at least two prostitution rings as head of the state’s organized crime task force.

In one such case in 2004, Mr. Spitzer spoke with revulsion and anger after announcing the arrest of 16 people for operating a high-end prostitution ring out of Staten Island.

“This was a sophisticated and lucrative operation with a multitiered management structure,” Mr. Spitzer said at the time. “It was, however, nothing more than a prostitution ring.”

Albany for months has been roiled by bitter fighting and accusations of dirty tricks. The Albany County district attorney is set to issue in the coming days the results of his investigation into Mr. Spitzer’s first scandal, his aides’ involvement in an effort to tarnish Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno, the state’s top Republican.

Thanks B3… Your effort was appreciated. Too bad the MLB sports package does not begin until the season starts. I am a state too far to get either Sports South or the Fox network that carries the Braves.

I am hoping to make it out of town for a couple of days. looks like I won’t make it to Myrtle Beach but Va Beach is not out of the question. With gas going up and my pay remaining constant, I have to be careful to make sure I watch my out go….

I was glad to hear that Javy had another big fly. I still believe he is the best choice for the team. I saw Corky Miller play several times last year here in Richmond and I was not overly impressed. Salmons needs to get at bats and Richmond is the place for him to do it. The only thing that will happen if he is in Atlanta is his batting average will hover around .100 and that will only be because some pitcher hits his bat. He is only 22. His time will come.

The local papers here sure aren’t expecting much from the Giants. I don’t think they’re 100-loss bad, although that division looks awfully tough.

Giants related not (note): Did anyone see the pictures of Bonds wearing a Giants hat to the Laker game? Seems like if I were a celebrity, not to mention one who is mostly disliked, I wouldn’t try and bring even more attention to myself. It does sound just like him though.

I still wonder if someone will sign him; he could still help most teams, but could you imagine the pr hit? I doubt ticket sales in many cities would truly be affected in either direction.

top of the morning, all. Thought I would check in before jumping into a really busy day, then jumping on a plane tomorrow for Mets and Yankees country. Better believe when I walk off that plane, I’ll have my Braves hat on. Never miss a chance to show the good people of the NYC a real baseball team.

Now, baseball: Good game yesterday. Wainwright didn’t look comfortable on the mound in the first and the Braves took advantage, then the tall right-hander from the SSI settled down and pitched well, which made me happy. Good dude, good family, wish him all the best this year. My kids watched a couple innings last night (game was replayed) and they couldn’t decide who to root for, Adam or the Braves, which was funny to watch.

Now, Jurrjens: Dude is a LOCK for the rotation. Do you good people realize how good this kid could be? His mound presence is of someone much older and more experienced. A lot of pitchers throw; Jurrjens pitches. He has a plan out there, delivering a pitch with a purpose and a strategy. And hitting 96 on the gun? Didn’t think his fastball had that much giddy-up.

He’s got the chance to be a special one, and he’s ours.

OK, gotta fry a bunch of fish today before taking the show on the ol’ road. So, if I’m outta here until Friday or the weekend, just wanted to duck in an say hey. You guys keep it clean in here while I’m gone (that includes you two in the doghouse, Klobber and JJS).

Bob and FBG, hope you’re feeling better.

Grinch, if you get a call from me in the NYC tomorrow night, I expect backup!

    The Scribe abides.

Happy Birthday, Scribe. 😀 I hope you can take a break from the fish-fry to enjoy it.

Now, Jurrjens. While watching highlites on the news, I pointed him out to Mrs. Raisins and told her she might as well get used to hearing that name. He is a star in the making, and not that far off. Don’t the Braves have a history of acquiring young stud pitchers from the Tigers? I look forward to watching him pitch wearing the wonderful A on his brow for years to come.

    Oh, yeah… G’morning B&Sians.

I have to trek inside I-285 today to work. If you haven’t figured it out yet, I prefer my rural setting. I do not like venturing inside The Perimeter. I’ll be gone for several hours, so I will miss my daily banter with you good folks. Be back soon…

Braves baseball: I caught part of the game yesterday. Jair Jurrigens looked great. He showed that he belongs in the starting rotation. That’s a no brainer, right? Random observation: Brent Lillibridge reminds me of a Craig Biggio type player. I’m not saying he has Biggio talent (now), but he has a similar body type and attitude. I haven’t scouted or watched any of the other teams in our division but after reading about ours and watching a few, I like this Braves team. I’d say the it’s the best team in at least four years.

For you blogging cyber sleuth baseball aficionados, check out this Wall Street Journal article on how the Cardinals are tapping into the blog community for “cyber scouting”.

Here’s what was written of that WSJ article in the American Marketing Association (AMA) marketing news blog this morning:

St. Louis Cardinals tap into social media for scouting.
In the spirit of Major League Baseball’s upcoming season, a story in last Friday’s Wall Street Journal details the St. Louis Cardinals’ “One For The Birds” social media campaign.

The effort is targeted at Cardinals fans, who are being asked to act as “cyber scouts,” by sending in information on unheralded players.

This works on so many levels. It’s like any other company harnessing its brand evangelists through a user community. How do companies make their products better? By learning about defects, gathering suggestions, etc.

How can the Cardinals make its on-field product better? Not by fan-suggested workout methods. Not by ignoring angry letters sent to the team’s general manager. But by harnessing its brand evangelists — its fans — who may help them put the best players out there.

One question, though: If even one player were to make it through this process to the Cardinals at some point, and then if the team were to go on and win the World Series with that player on the roster, would the cyber scout who found the player receive a ring? Hmm… (end)

    . . .

My two cents: I think it’s a great idea, not only for scouting high schools but the minors and pros as well… for unique perspectives on players (and teams). I’ve read what I thought were great ideas on the blog over the last few years from certain bloggers on everything from player attributes and weaknesses to team/game strategy.

From a marketing point of view and a player/team intelligence building aspect, this “cyber fan campaign” would be a great new way for MLB teams to create excitement, involve team loyalists (at arm’s length) and add a venue for savvy fans to feel that they are contributing to the strength of their team. Fans will never know what the club and manager knows about players, but the proverbial couch bleachers of television stadiums across the country do provide a different angle and perspective that could be useful to teams at times.

Thing is, there would need to be an open-minded, unbiased (to party line team/manager habits), cyber-savvy team representative that perused the blog(s) to identify denizens that actually had a habit of offering constructive ideas and critiques as well as capture the gem opines and ideas of infrequent denizens. This person would need to cull the best thoughts and feed them in an edited but substantively unfiltered way to the club.

The club would have to appreciate and respect the process. Then, the blog-rep would also be advised to feed the ideas (and reactions if appropriate) back to the bloggers in an interesting, fun, professional manner.

This team cyber-rep would be a difficult position to fill. They’d need talents that include writing, editing, organizational skills, people skills, PR capabilities and have no fear of delivering opposing views to those that deliver their paycheck. No pain, no gain.

As we all realize, the person doing this job would need skin thick enough to constantly read through the ranting locker rooms of typical baseball blogs and they must possess an ability to separate the wheat from the chaff.

    Your thoughts?

Good mornin’ fellow bloginators! <—-underlined. Hmmm, not a real word? Really?? Should be! 🙂
Sorry for no overnight bloggin’ but was asleep during hours of darkness. Very strange feeling! 6 whole hours of sleep! Well, mr. tiny bladder thought I should at least see some of the darkness, as well as get a bit of exercise. TMI, Berigan!
Catching up with the posts I missed. A few thoughts. Bo knows oger??? 😳
Bob back, yay!!! 😉 Flb sick, 😦 Scribe abides, Chris imbibes! But not to Grinchian levels!
And Scribe, you ain’t just whistling dixie about Jurrjens!!! I hate to toot my own horn(Not really) but I was saying after seeing those MLB clips of him in a Tiger uni, that he was going to be a good one!!! I just hope you are right, about him being a lock. Having him “season” in AAA for a month or so will take another year off the ol’ Arbitration clock. Plus if Chucky is healthy, I imagine Bobby isn’t going to not start him…just a feeling. One I wouldn’t mind being wrong about at all.

Uh… You heard it here first folks…. 🙂 Glad you agree with me SG. I have been saying that since last year. I still think the Braves picked the Pirates pocket on that trade…

Cyber scout… What do you folks think I have been telling you for the past two years? The only guy I have missed on was Thorman but I think he needs a change of scenery to reach his potential. I don’t know why, some players hit a ceiling and effort alone is not enough. Get rid of that big looping swing and you’ve got a major league ballplayer.

In all fairness, what the Cardinals are really looking for are heads up on good high school and American Legion type players. The secret to good scouting is to be able to recognize potential greatness long before everyone else does. Saying a player is going to be a good one by the time he gets to AAA takes no great perception. Saying that same player is going to be great when he is only 13 or 14 takes talent and the realization there are many pitfalls ahead for someone so young.

SG, it’s an interesting idea, for sure…..What happens though if a guy spotted early, and intently watched since the rookie league, ends up traded while in AAA? Can you imagine the howls???
I do wonder how much talent is missed in small towns not known for baseball talent/interest…

Gil, I didn’t catch your comparison of Lillibridge to Biggio, but it seems we agree on him. And yes… you are a good cyber scout. Your Richmond reports were (are) good. And yes again… the article was about high school scouting and Cardinals team marketing, which I believe I mentioned and the article detailed. I just took the concept further, into the pro level. If we aren’t too old to learn new ideas and gain new insights, why would we think team management is?

Question is, can you teach old MLB dogs new tricks? I’m not suggesting that fans vote on rosters but there’s lots of good, out of the box, off the wall ideas out there in cyberland. That, and some players read blogs.

Oh, and Happy birthday Scribe! May the bluebird of happiness land on your shoulder today while you fry fish.
