PLAINS, GEORGIA – Jimma Smith called me this mahnin’ and asked me to write a little storah about Atlanta Braves baseball. Ah am happa to do so. Ah guess mah fuhst memorah of Atlanta Braves baseball was back when mah Jimma was Govanuh. Jimma could get real good seats and sometimes we would go from the Capitol right on ovah to the Stadium and watch a game. Those weah the dahs of Barrah Bonnell, Jeff Burroughs, Garah Matthews, Dale Murpha, Phil Niekra, Rowland Office, Biff Pocoroba, Pat Rockett, and mah favahrite, Jerra Rawster. That Jerra Rawster could flah! And steal a base! That boah could steal a base and put it in his pocket! Jerra Rawster woah the numbah 1 and Jerra Rawster was alwahs numbah 1 in mah hahrt -except for mah Jimma, of coahse.

I remembuh the dah Jerra Rawster repohted to the Braves. He was a skinna little thang and he came ovah from the hated Laws Angeleez Dodgahs. Jerra could plah all the infield positions and outfield, too! Of coahse, the boah could not hit much moah than .240 or .250 but he looked good doin’ it. And that boah stole 174 bases! Onlah a few Braves have evah done that!

Ah was sad when Jerra Rawster lost his job but that’s when Bobba Cox brought in Pepa Frias. That Pepa was a delight! And sometimes Pepa would plah peppah right theah in front of ouah seats. That Pepa could reallah plah peppah! Of coahse, Pepa could not hit eitha but he was a lotta fun and loved to eat peanuts on the field. Jimma would alwahs bring Pepa a bag of peanuts and Pepa would alwahs give Jimma a big hug and some fahitas and those fahitas would get stuck in Jimma’s big ol’ teeth and Joda Powell would have to pick ’em out with his pocket knafe befoah Jimma appeahd on teluvishon.

After Pepa Frias theah was Lewa Gomez but Lewa did not last long heah. That’s when Raffa Rameraz arrived and that boah did not leave soon enough! The Braves coulda had Barrah Bonds for Raffa but did not make the trade. Next was Andres Thomas. Then, theah was Jeff Blowsah. I realla lahked Jeff Blowsah but the boah did not have lips. Could not whistle a lick. That is a recap of some Braves shortstops Ah have known.

Well, Ah guess that is enough nostalgha for one blog. Ah am happa to be back heah bloggin’ with Carolina Ladah and all the otha bloggahs. Remembuh to vote yoah conscience in the upcomin’ election. May yoah conscience be Democratic and mah yoah state be blue.

Paladin, my dad has been a Braves fan since he was very young & they trained here (Milwaukee days). The Red Sox stole his heart in ’67 & he’s had divided loyalties ever since. It’s torture for him when they play each other in interleague games.

WW, gas is 8 dollars a gallon in Italy, who’s fault is that??? China and India use much more fuel than ever before. I think I read China has 1000 new cars on the road, every day!!!
China is now the worlds largest polluter…demand is higher than ever all over the world. And none of the 3 candidates would dare drill in ANWR….
I have to admit, I like the guy you’d like to have a malt liquor with….but, he also has a close spiritual advisor who likes to tell his flock that the government created HIV virus, to give to people of color…anyone that would listen to a idiot like that…worries me deeply.
I also don’t like that richest 1% but….tax them to death…and guess what??? Less jobs in the US, new and old….lets give them even more of an excuse to send jobs and business headquarters overseas….

Another quick drive-by blogging: great lead, Miss Rosalynn!

Hear hear, WillyWally; I was disappointed after ’92 to be sure, but I STILL can’t sit down after this last one. Yikes! Nothing like a $900 check to make everyone forget about 6 years of war and a bankrupt economy. And that’s nobody’s fault but our own. I don’t blame presidents for what they do; they’re all thieves these days no matter what their party allegiance and the current corruption of the entire process practically requires it. I blame the people for putting up with it, however.

And, it’s worth noting, that this country is so much better than any other that even after all the thievery there’s STILL enough left over for us to all live like kings, relatively speaking. The people will clean it up and make it shine again someday. Alas, we need alternatives that don’t seem to be available this current election.

Grinch, you asked an important question yesterday, that I did not answer! 😦
We own 3 Lincolns now, after being GM folks. Just happened! We had nothing but chevys in the 80’s, buicks in the 90’s(Except for the 1966 Dodge Monaco I had for a year, til a guy without insurance crashed into me! 😡 )
I had a 1971 Caddy from 2001 til 2007. Best car I ever had. Never once left me stranded. They still only cost less than a dollar a pound, and if you get one from a little old lady(or Man) they have been beautifully maintained and will run forever. Gas will kill ya though!
Anyway, long boring story short. Bought a 1979 Lincoln Mark V a few years back to re-sell. Didn’t work the way I thought it would. beautiful car though. White with white leather interior. Ahh. Miles to empty gauge. Temp gauge on side mirror. Pull up on door handle at night, interior lights went on! Did I mention this was a 1979 car???? Remember how low tech that first computer you had in the 90’s was??
So, after I bought that, Dad wanted to get one, not one with the little girly man 400 Cubic inch engine(With all the smog stuff, it was pretty slow) so he grabbed the bigger Lincoln, the Continental. A 1975 Model. The Green rust bucket I was in yesterday when crazy man wanted a ride. Beautiful Green leather seats, car cost…990 bucks on Ebay!
I sold the white Lincoln finally to a friend, and was going to get back in the GM flock. But, while looking for tech info for my Dad’s 1975(God, will berigan ever shut up???) I saw on a Lincoln forum someone talking about this Yellow 1973 Lincoln Mark lV, same style like Frank Cannon drove! Nope, didn’t want another Lincoln, wanted a Buick Wildcat!!! But, he put up photos of the yellow one you see in my profile. He was in a tiny town in Illinois, where no one was interested in it. He had a 1970 Chevelle SS, and a 1968 Riviera he was restoring. He said if his brother found out the car was for sale, he’d buy it from him, and he’d use it to haul around motors in the trunk!!! Yikes!!! And, the real kicker??? He was only asking $2,200 for it!!! that’s 50 cents a pound for a car that had only 85,000 miles on it, and the original owner put thousands into it, even had the Cartier Clock repaired at one time!!! 😯 So….I ended up with yet another Lincoln!
And my Dad, not to be outdone, bought a 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Car, Black with red velvet interior(Dad says it looks like an 1870’s western whorehouse inside! )
When my Mom died on 2005, we had 3 cars. Within a year, we had 6 cars in the driveway!!! For 2 people! All 6 cars had cost us a combined $12,000!!! If you are going to go overboard, there are worse ways to do so. Anyway, we calmed down(and were pretty broke between buying them, and trying to fix them up.) so, down to 3, and all Lincolns…..
Now, aren’t you sorry you asked Grinch??? 🙂

Trying to clear some of the debris out with a shovel, I miscalculated where the solid footing was and under I went, drowning in the rain water and the whole block’s excrement. I HATE septic Tank systems!!! We had them in Jacksonville, and with all the rain we had there, nothing but problems. Add to that the previous owners having concrete poured over the top of the tank for a pool….GRRRR!
Just bad luck, not God, IMHO…if God picked sides in elections…well, I don’t know who we’d have running, but I’d bet it would be better folks than we have now!

NOTICE: the following may cause eyes to glaze over in boredom!

SG: If you’re lurking about, I didn’t ignore your question about Phil Keaggy. His is a strange story. It is difficult to make an album recommendation because the styles range widely. You will find his story quite interesting.

I was turned onto Keaggy way before I got into Christian music. (That I ended up there is either coincidence or divine guidance.) But Phil Keaggy is the finest guitarist I have ever heard. Notice, I didn’t say the best, or the fastest, or the most kick-ass or whatever… just the finest. His whole body of work, from early Glass Harp to his solo stuff to his acoustic stuff to his Celtic influenced stuff, is in a class by itself.

I had a 1969 Buick LeSabre, with the Buick 350 High Compression. I could get 19-20 MPG from a full size car almost 40 years old! No overdrive, over 100,000 miles on the motor. No roller lifters….so someone ‘splain to me why trucks with fuel injection, overdrive, high tech tramissions…and smaller motors, often can’t match that car???

Took it to my mechanic who went over it with the proverbial fine tooth comb. He gave me a list of things it needed to make it A-1 and the costs. I went back to Jr. Samples and said: Here is what you are asking for the car. Here is what Edmunds et al say this car in this Zip Code is worth. Here is what it is going to cost me to “fix” this car. Here is my offer. He disappeared into the inner sanctum and came back and said we have a deal. I hope they are happy, ’cause I am. That’s what makes a good deal. Both sides are happy…afterwards.

Carolina Lady: Hear, hear! You go girl. Land of the free, home of the brave.

WW: God is not a Republican and He’s certainly not a Democrat. Alone, He runs the Supreme Court of all Supreme Courts. However, He does work in mysterious ways and sometimes in funny ways. Like with your incident… the septic tank and all. And yes… get a tetanus shot and maybe even a round of antibiotics since you got cut. Don’t mean to laugh at your misfortune but that was funny. Sorry. You’ll be fine. Locusts or the mud rain in would have been preferable.

Paladin: Your 3:43 cracked me up and probably made WW grin too.

Raisins: Thanks for the info. I’m into Christian but not so much Christian music. Sounds weird maybe but God gave me the ears I got. Christian or spiritual music I like would be Bono/U2, George Harrison, Verve and others… I could go on. Oh, and Phil Keaggy, thanks to you.

Bob: As you say, overnight is not technically at night or late at night and certainly not morning… though I suppose it should have been more accurate. It was just a manner of speaking. I’ll just say, when I refer to the “overnights”, I’m including the posts made between the time I leave the blog in the evening until I arrive the next morning. But you knew that, right? COLUMBIA, S.C. (WLTX) — Richland County deputies say two middle school teachers who got into a fist-fight in front of students over a personal matter were arrested Wednesday.

Investigators say the original incident happened in the hallway of St. Andrews Middle School between two female eighth-grade teachers on Thursday, March 14.

Sheriff Leon Lott says the school’s resource officer, who works with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, say the fight happened at 2 p.m. in between classes.

Lott says 30-year-old Tawana Horton of Columbia and 28-year-old Cambrella Pickney of Columbia got into a physical altercation in the hallway, after the teachers “bumped into each other.”

The resource officer says “an ongoing personal dispute” can be blamed for the reason the teachers were fighting, but he didn’t elaborate on what the dispute regarded.

probably over somebody’s lunch. see a sandwich and want it. take it and end up in a fight.

well, reminds this journalist of blog activity of late. and jimmy smith cannot recall two of jimmy smith’s teachers fighting in high school but the thought somehow appeals to jimmy smith. can think of two jimmy smith would like to have seen in a mud wrestling environment but, alas, never to be. yes, a good physical altercation might have been most entertaining. hair pulling, torn clothing, a light sheen of perspiration . . . an hitherto unseen tattoo revealed. oh, the humanity!

BraKing News: from charles odum (ap)

Diaz hit .356 against left-handers and .318 against right-handers last season. He hit .358 against right-handers in 2006. His 358 at-bats last year were split almost evenly, with 170 against right-handers.

“There’s nothing wrong with playing every day with Matt, that’s for sure,” Braves manager Bobby Cox said Wednesday. “He’s earned it. What we’re going to do, I’m not saying, but he’s earned the right to play every day.”

Cox insists Diaz, 30, also has the defensive skills to be a full-time starter. Though overshadowed by Andruw Jones’ glove and Jeff Francoeur’s arm, Diaz was solid last season. He committed two errors in 135 games.

“He’s playing great,” Cox said. “He’s been a good defensive player. He just never had a chance to play every day, or as much as he’s played with us.”

and probably will never have the chance with bobby cox as manager. “not saying” what bobby cox is going to do is kinda funny. everybody knows what bobby cox is going to do.

Sir Guy, while My Lady, Mr. —, and/or others may well consider this inflammatory, I assure you it is not my intent, and while I do not know what was achieved on the blog today, it is also not my intent to disrupt anything.

As an aside, while I find such rhetoric distasteful, the notion that the disposition of the post will have any impact on my ego, as suggested by Mr. —, … is humorous … if my comments are considered inappropriate then so be it … truth is truth … it will be my intent to simply respond as requested.

Relative to your 6:38, I do appreciate the clarification as your definition is different from that to which I’m accustomed … and that which I had thought was common usage. Indeed it was at first glance confusing as is the tone of “But you knew that, right? Then why am I telling you what you already know? Oh, you pointed it out so I figured I’d clear that up” … it’s as if you doubted the sincerity of my 5:19. Had I not have been confused by what you said, I would not have so commented.

Stripped of the syntax, all I was trying to say was that I was sorry that I had missed seeing your earlier post … would have missed it entirely had Carol not asked me about it … then identified the point of confusion … and stated that I would be busy until game time but would read it again during the game and then respond.

Well, between chores, I caught three of the innings, including the last and as the game is now over … and I will reconsider your post as I listen to the replay … though I will defer my response until I can give it proper attention as I see the tone suggests that to be appropriate … perhaps later tonight after Carol retires for the evening … or tomorrow morning.

While it is perhaps my singular opine, I do honestly find Mr. —‘s 7:15 remarks inappropriate, if not presumptive and/or themselves inflammatory … if for no other reason, the fact that it was you who requested a response “Bob, please share your concerns with us” … though the tone somewhat remindful of an earlier post on the Braves’ Beat Blog.

I agree with your 8:00 in hoping there is no problem … and I’m relatively sure that most would agree that it is a mistake to reach conclusions on the basis of Blog rhetoric without clarification, especially when “you can’t figure out what the hell it means“.

Our friendship, from my perspective, is only coincidently Blog based and indeed, as with most others, is rarely influenced by “masked” rhetoric presented for public consumption .. were there to be a problem, a public forum would not be my venue of choice. Certainly, each friendship is different but that is directionally true for all … for it is the individual and neither the mask nor the agenda in which I am interested.

The esteemed Dean of Blog Journalism has said in effect “when Bob wants you to understand, he’ll say it where you’ll understand” … I too may be guilty of an appropriation but, it was indeed on spot and appropriate when he so said … and I do assever that it is my intent.

That is to say that generally speaking, if you don’t understand it, it’s safe to assume that you weren’t the intended audience … and in this case, any esoteric observations were themselves intended for private consumption and consideration … in no way intended to be inflammatory and certainly not proffered for the purpose of eliciting barks from the bitten dogs … in rhetoric or in tone.

Indeed they were but musings triggered by observations and recent events.

    Good Night and God Bless!

    Glad you asked, VOR! 🙂

I Googled “Elizabeth Cook” the author because I just got done reading her novel/prose poem “Achilles” which is one of the best things I’ve read in years. There’s no info on her at all, but about a million links to a vapid country singer who’s apparently stepped out of the San Fernando Valley long enough to grace Nashville with “Sometimes it takes balls to be a woman.” No, there’s no trickery involved, and despite even me being somewhat offended (that belongs in a different musical genre) the old guard of Nashville apparently loves it and compares her to Dolly. Man, times sure are a’ changin’.

I wonder what Willie thinks, who still couldn’t get an audience with those same people because he has long hair? Or David Allen Coe, who routinely headlines Waffle Houses because of the moral hang-ups of those same people?

    Oh, the hypocricy!

Good morning all, I have decided to skip my birthday for the next few years… I appears that getting older is somewhat detrimental to my health. I am developing “old man’s waddle” and it sucks….

Perhaps I could be like a lot of the Latin players and have a new birth certificate drawn to subtract a few years off the calender.

Last night’s game with the Astros was a classic example of why it is important not to get sloppy even when the other team has a big lead. You never know which run win be the winning run. I am not overly concerned about Sorianto but he really needs to stay focused. Jo Jo puts in another disappointing performance and perhaps seals his fate to Richmond.

Interesting article in the Washington Post about their 19 year old first baseman. Usually such a player is 4 to 5 years away from the bigs but he is determined to get there in two. I still think Nick Johnson would be a good fit for the Braves next year. Now, if we can just identify the heir apparent for Chipper at third….

“Righting the wrongs of the blog in one powerful post.”

Bob, Journalist, thanks for clearing that up last night. 🙄

Just kidding with the eye roll thingy my friend. Couldn’t resist. Bob… here’s the thing: when one self described journalist publicly accuses me of “adopting” from him and you seemingly joined in later with words like appropriations, observations, asseverations and the like, I do take offense. Knowing you, I don’t believe that was your intention, but perhaps there are others other than myself in this public forum that were confused by the meaning there. Jimmy is a fine man I’m sure, but intentional or not, he’s stepped across the line.

Whether straightforward (much preferred) approach, or through clever and not-so-subtle innuendo, there was no useful outcome in making light of an accusation of plagiarism directed at me by Jimmy. Your post may or may not have been purposefully in cahoots with him or bobbing around the subject… actually I can’t imagine that… but it seemed that way and was not a stretch to assume that was the case.

Here’s why I’m even bothering with this subject: An accusation of plagiarism is a damning thing. Perhaps I’m more sensitive to it than others because I’ve spent my entire career in the creative business. More importantly, I’ve spent my life trying to always do the right thing, the honorable thing in work and in life. Plagiarism is a theft and a lie. I’ve done neither of those.

Put yourself in my shoes. You know as well as everyone how the stain of a public accusation can be impossible to remove once painted. When Jimmy accused me of “adopting” from his posts, I asked for specific examples or clarification from him, yet I haven’t received either… just more subtle or playful prodding. I still don’t have any idea of the “adopting” he’s speaking of. Instead of responding to clear the air or prove his point, he avoided my reasonable request and offered up another cute little dig about my inclination to “right the wrongs of the blog in one powerful post”. Perhaps this will be seen as another of those long “righting the wrongs” posts. So be it.

Now, without clarification from Jimmy, I’m left to wonder if his accusation remains as part of my character in the minds of some. It’s the same as publicly asking someone the question, “do you still beat your wife”? How does one go about answering that? Where can I go to get the stain assumed theft and of blog credibility removed?

Yes Bob, it is that serious with me. At this point I don’t expect proof, an apology or a clarification from Jimmy… perhaps I’m the intended jestee, mark or dupe dujour, but I certainly don’t expect you or others, especially those that should know my character or respect me, to playfully continue to kick that accusatory theft ball around the field either, even if it isn’t intended to be supportive of the accusation.

We’ve all seen other blogs where certain denizens need “and idiots” to pick at and subtly ridicule or snipe from the back of the class to fulfill a comedy shtick or to satisfy their own competitive needs or fragile ego. That’s not what we choose here. I won’t accept it behavior… even if I’m not the intended target.

We could all sit here all day every day and say hurtful things and, in a purposefully demeaning way, point out the shortcomings and annoying habits of each other. There would be plenty to go around with each of us. So, you see why I might take umbrage at something like that? Playful prods and respectful, argumentative discussions are good and thought provoking. Serious accusations or character attacks are another.

That’s not why I blog. That’s not why any right-minded person blogs (is that an oxymoron?). Our gracious host Carolina Lady must be distressed by dissention as well. She is a gracious, kind-hearted person and her spirit is wholesome and admirable. At her own cost and time, she created a peaceable kingdom for respectable people and spends so much of her time and energy behind the scenes to provide this forum for our enjoyment and hers. I suspect her enjoyment is waning as we continue with this issue.

To her I’ll say… forgive us our transgressions, thank you for your selfless efforts and let not your heart be troubled fair Lady. Everyone on your blog is intelligent and they are good people, yet since we are all imperfect creatures, sometimes our words and moods belie our true intentions and our character. Have patience with us as we sort out our differences and our misunderstandings, while we may become better friends because of our candor with each other.

Other denizens must also be tiring of this kind of interaction, just as we all were on several other dubious occasions. To them I’ll just say, sometimes things must be said publicly to set records straight. Don’t fret and don’t go all Pollyanna on us here. We’re grown adults. Like America, it’s not perfect but it’s the best. Although unfortunate, these things happen, even in the best of families. The sky is not falling. It is but a small space in the overall makeup of the blog and a tiny matter in the lives of everyone. Scroll by if your skin is too thin to deal with the sometime unpleasant reality of civil and philosophical discourse and disagreement.

If the accusation were not made on a public forum, I would not have dealt with it publicly. This blog is a multi-purpose venue. It’s a baseball blog first, but it’s also an omnibus, a surrogate main street and a gathering place for all sorts of content, conversations and stuff. It is not a typical sports blog and it’s not an Algonquin Round Table.

Some subjects and discourse will be good and some will not. That’s life in the big city, the rural countryside and the blog. I suppose it’s inevitable, but it’s not the end of the world, nor is it the end of the best blog.

Bob, Journalist, I do consider you a dear friend. Knowing you as a man of high morals and character, I’m certain that will not change. I care for you and yours in more ways than you might imagine. In no way do I intend any of this to make you or anyone else uncomfortable or to add stress to your life. Quite the contrary, my purpose is to illuminate this subject, set the public record straight and hopefully clear the air.

This is so that we can all get silly again, let our guards and our hair down, talk baseball and stuff… and wander around wherever our imaginations take us.

A little old lady went to see her physician about a what she thought to be a personal problem.

She told the doctor that she was having a problem with gas but she was not too concerned about it as there was no smell associated with her flatulence and they were silent. The doc wrote her a prescription and told her to take it as directed and come back to see him in two weeks.

The woman did as directed and when she returned she berated the medico. She said that while still silent, the smell was horrendous from her emissions and he needed to do something immediately.

Her doctor looked at her and said, “well, now that we have cleared up your sense of smell, I will give you something to take care your hearing problem”….

TWENTY-NINE PALMS, California (CNN) – U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Mario Ramos-Villalta flashes a broad smile from beneath his camouflage cap as he talks about the country he loves and why he became a Marine.
He’s fought twice in Iraq and survived an attack on his Humvee in October 2005. Now, he’s preparing for deployment to Afghanistan.

Yet he’s not even an American. He’s a citizen of El Salvador serving in the U.S. military.

Dubya should get his donkey on Air Force One and fly out there and personally hand him his citizenship papers. This is a disgrace!!! Oh BTW, he won a Purple Heart for that attack on his Hummer.

I managed to get something constructive done today. While out in the shed, I noticed a bottle of wax and decided to wax my truck. Isn’t it funny how you can get sidetracked so easily as you approach senior citizenship? Anyway, now it will rain to beat the band.

Wait. NASCAR race in Martinsville this weekend, sure fired reason for a monsoon.

Raisins… At least one pitcher gets traded before the deadline but not necessarily for a major league player. I cannot see Atlanta dealing with Philly or New York but DC and Florida are possibilities. More likely an American League team. I think the Braves would like to keep everyone they have but know they can’t.

The Braves cast off are a lot better than some of the Nat’s guys in the pen and they would not mind dropping someone off their 40 roster to add depth.

That being said, I read somewhere (gee, I can’t remember where) that the Tigers, whom the Braves are playing tonight, have a need for a reliever and might be interested in one of ours. I agree that sometimes you let a guy go for less than market value to keep him out of the hands of a rival but there is little honor among thieves and baseball general managers. I suppose we will just have to wait and see how it plays out. At least the pitching is pretty deep. It is walks that I hate… because now you know the guy is going to give up the dinger with two guys on base. Happens almost every time. At least to the Braves. The Braves on the other hand seem to have a penchant for hitting into a double play when given the same opportunity. Oh well, Andruw will not be in a position to cause so much damage this year.

The worst part when you throw a hanging curve is that it always seems like the whole world freezes and moves in slo-mo as that thing just slowly hooks its way to the sweet part of the bat (at which time, everything moves in fast forward as the pitch leaves the park in half a second). It’s just agony watching that thing leave your hand.

Leyritz never would have hit a homer off a Wohlers fastball. Never. Leyritz’s only chance was for Wohlers to act like a putz and throw a slider.

Gil, Smoltz is the most amazing pitcher. We all could probably talk for days about his various transformations as a pitcher with his arm angles, his pitch locations, his pitch selections. He changes from inning to inning, batter to batter, from injury to injury. Just simply amazing. He could have been lazy and been a thrower who just relied on his stuff to get him by all of these years. But he probably wouldn’t be pitching anymore.

My best friend in high school was better at bowling, pool, ran faster than me. Thought he could out anything I could do…till one day we were playing catch, and we both kept backing up, and I could throw both high and for accuracy, and he had trouble getting it to me in just in a straight line….weird how some folks like a Johnny Damon, Bernie Williams, Juan Pierre, can’t throw a ball even 100 feet, yet were strong, fast, etc!!

They played all of their first album, all of Idlewild and played for three hours. Duane never took the slide off his finger that night. Staggeringly unbelievable. He died about two months later.

Howdy, all. I actually missed the end of the game; looks like Braves win 3-2 by the box score.

    Observations:

I wish Tyler Yates would give up the compromising photos he has of Bobby.

I wish the rest of the team could bunt like Anderson and Lillibridge; if neither makes the team this year that skill will be sorely missed at some key point of the season.

Royce Ring probably won a spot in someone’s bullpen tonight.

Who replaces “Batting practice Scott Thorman” with “Game time Scott Thorman” and why haven’t they been hanged yet?

Has anyone else noticed that every time Boog notices that the camera’s on him he flexes and stays that way? You can definitely tell the difference when he doesn’t. It’s impressive he can pull that off without appearing to do it on purpose. 🙂

I go Hampton at 5 because I think JJ’s got Major League stuff now, and he’s a legitimate 4 most places. Heck, better some places. Slotting Hampton at 5 gives him a few off days early in the season, which I think is a good thing. Less pressure, too, on a guy who hasn’t pitched in 2 seasons.

    My bench:

    Catcher/1B: Pena (S) He’s earned it. Period.

Utility: Prado (R) He’s earned it too. Lilly can wait at AAA.

OF: Blanco (L) with speed to burn. Tough one. I like Anderson, but I think Blanco has won it. He convinced me last night in the ninth. Awesome speed from 1st to score.

Now… I’m struggling here. I can’t seem to be able to get around adding Thorman.

    1B: Thorman (L) Damn.

    Last spot…

Super utility: Lillibridge (R) OK, maybe he can’t wait. Heck, he can play anywhere.

I know… my bench picks probably suck. But I’m not gonna let sentimentality give a job to Javy, who couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat. Borchard can’t play in the field, but he has a nice stroke… might be a nice bat off the bench late… not much power on the bench…

OF: Borchard (S) I like his pop off the bench. Since Javy needs to ride into the suset, maybe Borchard is your legitimate big bat off the bench. Gotta have at least one, right?

I’m not really happy with my own picks. Doesn’t feel right. What am I forgetting?

Javy’ll probably get the last spot and catch every 5th day. I think Pena will make it though, because he has earned it.

The wildcard is that there is still 9 days before the opener, and this is the prime time for dealing. I’ll be surprised if Wren doesn’t deal a reliever (Ring, maybe?) before the end of camp. That, of course, makes the bench discussion very premature.

    Morning, all!

Raisins, “what you’re forgetting” is that Thorman can’t hit major league pitching. Or won’t, anyway. No way he gets the job over Borchard in my opinion; options or no. Much as I like his hustle and the five times a year he accidentally connects, we don’t need automatic outs like last year.

Ditto Prado; he’s had a fantastic Spring every year he’s been here. Never translates.

Yates IMO is purely a confidence problem just like Devine. Bobby kept running him out there night after night when he was injured and ineffective and I saw the change in his eyes and face. It’s still there now; he looks ashamed of himself before every pitch.

Gil, I’d be willing to bet we get at least two effective starters for this year out of those first 5 (remember, our 3rd rounder is high too). We’ve got Dimitroff picking now, not “1st rd WR/ 6th rd undersized lineman” McKay. I’ll bet a 12 pack of your favorite brew on it. Besides, even if they take three years it’ll be worth it; I trust them to build a good team without thugs, which isn’t easy.

    Off to the chiropractor.

Greenie: Maybe/maybe not on Prado. He’s only keeping the spot warm for Infante, anyway. As to Thorman, he’s the only real backup at 1B. I’m sure you sensed my enthusiasm. Borchard can’t catch a cold. Pena… he could, if he’s not the only backup catcher. Perhaps a deal is the answer.

Gil: The 1st and 2nd rounders can most certainly make an early impact at certain positions such as O-line and D-line. Jake Long or Glen Dorsey (if his leg is sound) or Cedric Ellis would all be solid choices. I think ThomasD will go O-line/D-line early, and take his QB with one of his 2nd rounders (or maybe the 3rd round, depending on who slips.) Could use a middle linebacker, too.

Salty: YES!!! Right on. That’s a good old Kenny song even if it is dated (like me).

FBG: No cake? You are a sweet and kind lady… but no cake? Have mercy!

WW: Don’t be shakin’ til your breakin’. Anything after 30 seconds is playin’. Hey, I’m surprised you didn’t get shots and such after your incident. Good thing you didn’t go in head first… we’d have to call you MM instead of WW.

Grinch: If Thor is on the team and it looks like he is/will be, maybe a heavy bat would help. Like Julio. Might even get into his head, which could help. No… that would be too simple a solution. Good luck with Dr. Bones the neck-cracker.

Just Another Political Song Link – Post No. 1207

Yes, change candidate Jimmy Smith’s mother is a typical white woman. Or maybe a typical Ugandan woman… don’t know. Change is called for but change is not always good. What change might a politician cause?

On the other hand, spare change is always good but sometimes not enough. Change is not a sermon, or a political speech. Sometimes just a simple sincere reply to a charge is best.

Notice how most candidates start with “my friend”, before they proceed to say nothing…like McCain. Comes from years of bickering and plotting and back-stabbing and pushing papers around in the Senate and House. Talk, talk, talk… do nothing.

Serious politics is good, but too much blog seriousness is not good. Comedy is good but there are times that comedy is not, uh… funny. Al Franken is not a comedian anymore… he’s a joke. Bill Maher is not funny anymore, he’s angry. Stephen Colbert is funny at times but he wasn’t funny as a candidate. Colbert is always the clown. The mask should come off now and then. Gets unfunny after a while of the same shtick.

I’ll vote for Dennis Miller. He is funny and he’s sincere and he’s the kind of guy you could talk to or have a beer with and not feel your leg getting pulled the whole time. Back and forth… funny, serious, real, thoughtful, funny again. Well rounded. I’ll vote for Dennis Miller for President of the US Comedians.
    It’s Miller time.

Always being the clown is not real, not healthy, not good, not even funny after a while. By removing the mask on occasion, fresh air and sunshine will do wonders for the skin, the complexion, the mood, the eyesight, the sincere intent and maybe even the comedy. Then, all is peachy and orange blossoms bloom, cake deliveries resume and pollen fills the air. Oh, mercy. Didn’t mean to get serious so soon. Cross pollination is good though.

Sometimes… the best political message isjust a song.

Then again, sometimes a song works best fora soft reply. Funny how it works out this way and that way.

    Now, baseball:

Sitting on a sofa on a Sunday afternoon
    Going to the candidates debate
Laugh about it, shout about it
    When you’ve got to choose
Ev’ry way you look at it, you lose

Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio
A nation turns its lonely eyes to you (Woo, woo, woo)
What’s that you say, Mrs. Robinson
Joltin’ Joe has left and gone away
    (Hey, hey, hey…hey, hey, hey)

Raisins-Blanco is not faster than Anderson. The Braves have not seen anyone with Anderson’s speed for years. I would expect he could have taken out Furcal in a race-when Raffy first came up. Anderson has jets. He is faster than Reyes. The only player with possibly more speed on the Braves is Schafer-and I’m not positive he’s faster than Josh.

Lew: It’s all very iffy right now. Schafer is the heir apparent to CF. Blanco and Anderson have similar games, but where do they go? RF is locked for a while. Schafer takes over in CF next year. Diaz has finally convinced most that he is a very good starting LF. Throw BJones into the mix, and you have trade bait. Either Blanco or Anderson could be paired with a reliever (Ring?) in a trade. The other stays and BJones goes to AAA. (And Terrence Moore throws another fit.) Might be why Blanco’s getting alot of PT. The bench needs a bopper. Thorman ain’t it.

    journalist responds.

“Well, Prince, so Genoa and Lucca are now just family estates of the Buonapartes. But I warn you, if you don’t tell me that this means war, if you still try to defend the infamies and horrors perpetrated by that Antichrist- I really believe he is Antichrist- I will have nothing more to do with you and you are no longer my friend, no longer my ‘faithful slave,’ as you call yourself! But how do you do? I see I have frightened you- sit down and tell me all the news.”

It was in July, 1805, and the speaker was the well-known Anna Pavlovna Scherer, maid of honor and favorite of the Empress Marya Fedorovna. With these words she greeted Prince Vasili Kuragin, a man of high rank and importance, who was the first to arrive at her reception. Anna Pavlovna had had a cough for some days. She was, as she said, suffering from la grippe; grippe being then a new word in St. Petersburg, used only by the elite.

All her invitations without exception, written in French, and delivered by a scarlet-liveried footman that morning, ran as follows:

“If you have nothing better to do, Count [or Prince], and if the prospect of spending an evening with a poor invalid is not too terrible, I shall be very charmed to see you tonight between 7 and 10- Annette Scherer.”

“Heavens! what a virulent attack!” replied the prince, not in the least disconcerted by this reception. He had just entered, wearing an embroidered court uniform, knee breeches, and shoes, and had stars on his breast and a serene expression on his flat face. He spoke in that refined French in which our grandfathers not only spoke but thought, and with the gentle, patronizing intonation natural to a man of importance who had grown old in society and at court. He went up to Anna Pavlovna, kissed her hand, presenting to her his bald, scented, and shining head, and complacently seated himself on the sofa.

“First of all, dear friend, tell me how you are. Set your friend’s mind at rest,” said he without altering his tone, beneath the politeness and affected sympathy of which indifference and even irony could be discerned.

“Can one be well while suffering morally? Can one be calm in times like these if one has any feeling?” said Anna Pavlovna. “You are staying the whole evening, I hope?”

Raisins-I will bet you that Matt Diaz 1.Will end up platooning this year 2. Will not be with the Braves past this year-he’s starting to get expensive and is now arbitration eligible.

Frank Wren has gone on the record saying that Kotsay will only play 125-135 games this year. Whoever is the fourth outfielder will get a bare minimum of 50 starts (with platoon time in left) and maybe lots more. Wait and see. I have no problem with it being Blanco, but I really liked what I saw of Anderson-his speed, and his work ethic, not to mention the amazing defense. Don’t count him out. Wish there was a way to keep both. Though I like Kotsay, I wouldn’t have minded seeing the Braves keep both Anderson and Blanco.

Hmmm… that’s peculiar. Seems like an old story that’s been dusted off for a mint julep occasion. Hope the Braves players stretch that much before games. Quite an ostentatious manner in which the supposed ruling class spoke of such things, ain’t it? But then, the French… you know, friend one century, foe the next. They did help us when we were beginning. Haven’t much since but at least they’re leadership is friendly again.

Anyone not watching the John Adams HBO special will need to see it as soon as it comes out on DVD. It’s very well done. Adams is played by Paul Giamatti (Sideways, Saving Private Ryan, Lady in The Water, The Truman Show). Giamatti has become one of my favorite actors. He gives a brilliant performance. He becomes John Adams.

The series gives a different perspective on the origins of America and the United States. Adams was a brilliant and passionate man. His wife Abigail was a great partner to him and she was also a brilliant and compassionate Lady. Behind every successful man…

Admittedly, Adams “didn’t have the luxury of birth or the purse to spend his days fomenting dissent”. Oh, if more of our politicians were more humble and just felt that way, we would be a better America.

    The Trailer.

    And Lew,
Didn’t know that about Kotsay, 125 to 135 games tops. Doesn’t it stand to reason then that we need 5 outfielders, especially if Diaz is still platooned?? Seems to me that you can’t have 4 outfielders if Kotsay is missing one of 4 games….bench would be hamstrung a bit…can’t have Diaz or Kotsay just pinch hit, they’d have to go into the field. A lot of teams carry 5 outfielders…
And I really don’t see why we HAVE to carry Thorman….there are lots of average fielding, no hitting 1st baseman all around baseball if Tex were to get hurt. And if not hurt, he’ll play every single game like he had done every year til he got hurt last year in Texas….

Gil, good question. I even heard Pendleton talking during a ST game(He talked for more than an inning I think) and he was talking about having to let people fail sometimes, so they can figure out what they are doing is wrong. Sounds like a BC kind of discipline. NO!!! If someone is really screwing up, take him aside(Not in front of everyone) and say look bud, you are headed to the minors if you don’t work on this NOW! It’s like the Andruw situation last year. Bobby or TP should have said come into the video room after showering. And show him time after time…see here??? 1-2 count. Slider outside. 0-2 Count. Slider outside. 2-2 Count this time. Slider outside. Let me slow the video down. See? Your bat is 5 inches too short to reach that pitch. And they know you will swing at it, so they keep throwing it, instead of those nice fat fastballs you like down the middle.
Nah, he’ll start hitting again doing the same wrong things again and again.
“They” wouldn’t accept a guy not busting it down the line, why do they accept a guy not putting effort in somewheres outside the batting cage???
Tony Gwynn talked about spending hours watching film of himself. He had a great swing, why bother??? Because he was a hard worker of course, wanted to be the very best.
Thorman should just be locked in a room with tapes of every game the Red Sox play, and slavishly copy their hitting approach.
You just watch, he’ll get picke up by some AL team like the Red Sox, or Yankees and after a season in their minor league system, he will learn patience, finally….

It was so simple, I just stopped dropping my shoulder…. Maybe Chambliss can straighten him out in Richmond this year. If he just wants to play, he might make it in AAA but if he has the talent I think he has, he would be better off in an instructional league, conceptually speaking … Gil’s,/b> correct but it applies to every sport in which I ever engaged or followed that involved a swing … if you are thinking too much before and during the swing, you are doomed.

Well now, one winter it was so cold that all the geese flew backward and all the fish moved south and even the snow turned blue. Late at night, it got so frigid that all spoken words froze solid afore they could be heard. People had to wait until sunup to find out what folks were talking about the night before.

Paul Bunyan went out walking in the woods one day during that Winter of the Blue Snow. He was knee-deep in blue snow when he heard a funny sound between a bleat and a snort. Looking down, he saw a teeny-tiny baby blue ox jest a hopping about in the snow and snorting with rage on account of he was too short to see over the drifts.

Paul Bunyan laughed when he saw the spunky little critter and took the little blue mite home with him. He warmed the little ox up by the fire and the little fellow fluffed up and dried out, but he remained as blue as the snow that had stained him in the first place. So Paul named him Babe the Blue Ox.

Well, any creature raised in Paul Bunyan’s camp tended to grow to massive proportions, and Babe was no exception. Folks that stared at him for five minutes could see him growing right before their eyes. He grew so big that 42 axe handles plus a plug of tobacco could fit between his eyes and it took a murder of crows a whole day to fly from one horn to the other. The laundryman used his horns to hang up all the camp laundry, which would dry lickety-split because of all the wind blowing around at that height.

Whenever he got an itch, Babe the Blue Ox had to find a cliff to rub against, ’cause whenever he tried to rub against a tree it fell over and begged for mercy. To whet his appetite, Babe would chew up thirty bales of hay, wire and all. It took six men with picaroons to get all the wire out of Babe’s teeth after his morning snack. Right after that he’d eat a ton of grain for lunch and then come pestering around the cook – Sourdough Sam – begging for another snack.

and this is what thorman has to look forward to if continuing to swing like paul bunyan. blue ox.

Gil, I don’t really disagree with “the announcers are just being nice…. maybe even naive about Thorman’s chances right now” but when you’re using approximation methods to resolve a problem … your approach is usually designed to converge on the answer … this one doesn’t appear to be so doing.

Of course, you could call him Abner and folks would just smile … but that’s code for Lum which is short for Lummox which is the same as ‘lil Abner, who was a big ox, methinks.

To me, Thorman is one of Spring Training’s greatest mysteries … for what reason would they keep him … to hit? To play first base if they’re able to trade Tex for a starter? If they don’t plan to play him, why is he getting so much exposure?

Speaking of Tex, can you imagine a player not recognizing the condition of his equipment during Spring Training? Unrelated to Tex, I still don’t think we know enough about the team’s chemistry.

Another mystery was John’s approach to Spring Training … according to Bobby “John will be fine, he threw so much on Wednesday that he got stiff” … goodness, how much did he throw? Who was in control of that side session?

Chipper should have a good year if you pitching doesn’t collapse as his expectations for the team will be high … the potential for improved team performance is there … but I still believe that the three keys to realizing that potential are named Bobby, Terry and Roger … to be frank, a wren is now responsible for seeing that the job gets done and that could bring some unexpected changes at the field level.

Egypt and Shanghai last night … haven’t looked at tonight’s schedule

Perhaps unbelievably, I just now seen Sir Guy’s March 20 … 11:22 am epic post for the first time as it was posted while I was struggling with computer keyboard/security problems. I found it as a result of searching for the word “cahoots” after receiving multiple emails asking if Jimmy and I were in “cahoots” … which, while perhaps not an imagination stretch to some, was not the case.

While the fact that i had not seen his post may change the reaction by some to my 6:41 PM post; having so read would not have materially changed my response. However, I may respond in some fashion after having a chance to digest the essence, for purposes of clarification; if not modification in posture, should I deem that appropriate.

How dare you Berigan! Carol’s experiencing some eye discomfort and we’ve deferred “Charlie Chan’s Secret” until midnight Central time.

A man walked into a new town one day, and approached an old timer sitting in front of a store, whittling. As he walked up to the old timer he asked him “What kind of people live in this town? The Old Timer stops and thinks for a second and then asks the stranger, “What were the people like in the place you just left?” The stranger replies to the old man, “They were a sad lot. Always contentious and insulting.” The Old Timer looks up and says to the stranger, “Well, I’m afraid that’s the type of people you will find here as well.” The stranger turns and leaves the way he came.

The Old Timer continues to whittle and a few hours later another stranger approaches and asks him “What kind of people live in this town. The old Timer asks the same question “What kind of people did you know in your last place of residence. The second stranger claims “Oh! They were wonderful people and I hated to leave, but circumstances beyond my control made the move necessary.” The Old Timer stands up and shakes the new stranger’s hand proclaiming “Welcome friend. You will find wonderful people here as well”

Thus endeth the lesson my children. Peace be unto you.

It’s a little like a certain beet writer commenting about Lillibridge’s inability to hit a slider. Now that will become the clarion call to hundreds of sheep who accept his observations as gospel.

No one can hit a good slider, bad sliders are crushed by everyone not named Andrew Jones. The key is pitch recognition and knowing when not to swing, even if the pitch is a strike. Even a good fastball cannot rely on speed alone to make it unhittable. A 90 mph fast ball with movement is much more effective than a 98 mph heater that is flat.

Dear friends and Braves and Stuff neighbors, please allow me to address the state of the blog of late and offer not an apology, but an explanation. Better yet, think of this post as a view of my own perspective or reality check or a paradigm shift if you will. I’m writing this in a bit of a hurry, as I’m scheduled to leave town for a few days, so forgive if you have to add a few things between the lines that escape me as I write this.

First, I respect and love Carolina Lady as a sister… more than any of you know. She is a dear heart and a kind spirit. She is exactly what she always appears to be… a righteous human being with a beautiful spirit. What you see is what you get. I would rather leave this blog forever rather than upset her or add to her stress or her burden.

Last night, I asked… implored CL to not delete any post. I think that the differences that have been aired publicly should have been allowed to be resolved publicly. I believe it is a mistake to sweep all traces of disagreement or contention or challenge under the rug. When that is done, things fester and mold grows. If some participants are thin skinned or squeamish about VERBAL, WRITTEN confrontations, they simply need to scroll by. Scroll buttons are useful at times.

That said, I’ll always stand behind whatever our gracious host wishes. That does not mean we’ll always agree, but I’ll always love and respect her. She is more important than any blog. Each of you are also more important than this place we hang our hats and at times, our feelings.

Paladin has offered good advice on shared blog management. Great idea. That is, if we want this place to grow. I do. It will become too much of a burden for one person to manage. The answer will lie in the details of how that’s done. A great idea sir.

Lew has told a very good story this morning… a wise parable. Perspective is relative and we usually see in a community the exact thing that we bring to that community. A nice story. Truth well told sir.

Berigan has said that this should not be a “reality” blog. I believe I understand his intent, but I’d have to ask: Compared to what? Reality TV? God, I hope not. Well then, reality outside of TV is relative isn’t it? Every reality is different and every participant brings their own reality and experience to the party. They bring a sample of whatever they are and whatever they wish to share with the forum. Over time, a pretty fair understanding of character is established of regular denizens.

“Those who shock easily need to be shocked more often” Mae West

That is the truth. I’ve posted that before but it fits particularly well here, today. If grown men that are gentlemen can’t occasionally disagree or even argue without causing an implosion, something is wrong. Perhaps the expectations of the blog are a bit too high. Perhaps a dialog that some of us deem to be civil discourse is considered crass or disturbing by others. It’s relative and understandable.

Funny, but I suspect that some of those who seem to complain about friction in this neighborhood are the same ones that blog elsewhere and, at the drop of a hat, calling others idiots and morons. Then, once back in the typically friendly confines of Braves and Stuff, they carry on like they are ultra sensitive to the slightest disagreement.

Get a grip good people! Time to get over ourselves and quit wringing hands and fretting over the rare conflicts that do occur. Try this: the next time one of you complain that you just can’t bear conflict… if the repartee is more than you can handle or your perfectly innocent world is interrupted by dissent or you are accused of something you don’t deserve or if you feel that someone has slighted you… sit back, relax and just take it. Be nice. Don’t respond. Bite your lip. It’ll be OK… you can just check your verbal weapons, your character, your pride and your principles at the blog door. That might work for some… not me. Pollyanna is not an option.

There is a time for everything. Love, hate, planting, reaping and sowing. Despite our recent differences, this blog stands head and shoulders above all other sports blogs in terms of civility and humorous repartee. Why do you suppose that is the case?

I’ll answer my own question: Because of the intelligence, creativity and fundamental good manners and ethical standards of the individuals that blog here, therefore the community has that character as a whole. Even the biggest philosophical, political differences or personal slights are aired in at least a quasi-respectable, gentlemanly manner. By the way, I use the male gender reference because it’s only the men that tangle. It’s the way of the world. Primeval stuff. Can’t help it. Men fight at times. Thing is, when this group fights it’s not a fight club, it’s a verbal joust. No blood is drawn.

Is the occasional verbal joust objectionable to you? Doe’s it ruin your day or spoil your mood? If so, then I’d ask that you look inside yourself for an answer. Perhaps you are allowing the blog to be more than you should.

My fellow spots fans; do you abhor hard play in the field? How about a hard slide into second base with the intention of taking out the double play? Too rough for you? How about the base runner that plows over the catcher who’s blocking the plate? Too rough? The pitcher that retaliates by throwing chin music? Unfair and “vile” behavior?

Before you condemn those of us that do the same thing with words, think about it. What standard are we trying to achieve? Cricket rules? Curling tactics? Listen well intentioned people, words don’t bruise; they don’t break bones or cause bleeding. I think some here are getting carried away with the premise that the written word should never be challenging, confrontational or comparatively brutal. Hey, as long as the words are not personally attacking (as our blog rule states), immoral or vile, then what is the big problem with a verbal joust?

There. I’ve spoken my opinion on the subject. It’s my truth, and I recognize it may not be everyone’s. Some may enjoy idle chatter all the time and some may prefer we stick to only baseball. Some may shy away from anything remotely political, spiritual or confrontational. If that is the case, the you’ll be pleased to know that you are totally welcome to provide such. If you do enjoy the occasional challenge… even to the point of getting (respectably) testy, fine by me. When someone insults me and they have a chance to apologize but instead pick, I’ll challenge them. That does not mean I’ll get vile, hurtfully personal or threaten physical violence. Some have done that and I detest even the hint of it.

As I’ve said before, different strokes. Just accept that we are all different. I would be bored out of my mind if we were all the same or always talked about the same subject, no matter how interesting the subject. Also, I would not visit this place if it were always testy. Conversely, I doubt that I’d visit much if the occasional “hard slide” or “chin music” was condemned or deleted.

Let’s step back and look at our expectations. Let’s be real. There is a time for most everything in a rational and well-rounded group and healthy community. If we adopt a Victorian ethic or raise the bar of what we deem “acceptable” conversation to high, I fear that none of us could reasonably expect to scale it.

Now, to lighten up a bit… I’ll leave with a song. I think even my good friend Paladin will like it. Happy Easter my good friends and comrades. May peace be with you. May civil disagreements remain, not a bad thing, but a worthy challenge. Many lessons may still be learned by such disagreements.

There Is A Time For Most Everything.

  698. 704 Mr. Fly, sleuth reporter March 23, 2008 at 11:53 am

Editor’s Note: If I believe what I just opined above, then I must also believe that this post from Mr. Fly is within the bounds of fun… a jabbing but respectable repartee and challenge of an earlier discussion. If it’s not here when I return in a few days I’ll assume that it has been deemed unworthy. The Daily Buzz is not intended to be hurtful… merely a pointed parable and a perspective that I have exaggerated for the purpose of comedy. It is not intended to anger my good friend Bob, nor is it’s purpose to deride the esteemed JJS. It’s purpose is to clarify, with humor, my perspective on the affair of late. I hope you’ll take it as such.

In The Case of: The “Coincidental” Hit and Run

Ladies and gentlemen: the story you are about to hear is true. Only the names have been changed to protect the innocent.

It was a sunny, breezy, pollen-filled, sneezy March afternoon when an urgent message buzzed my beeper. I read the message: “Mr. Fly…urgent…stop…need help…stop”. I had no idea what that meant but it looked serious. Only a few people have my private beeper number, so I figured it had to be important. Being a sleuth reporter and all, I interrupted my Spring Training coverage (with Florida Orange Blossom visitations) and flew to the normally peaceful little community of Stuffville to help.

After landing in Stuffville, two men approached me. They were both wearing Fedoras. I knew instantly that it was my sleuth Detective friend, Sergeant Joe Friday and his sidekick Officer Bill Gannon. They were in need of special assistance and balancing reportage. There was trouble brewing in Stuffville.

Seems an old friend of mine (we’ll call the guy Mr. Justin Sultid) has recently been charged with “word adoption” and has been besmirched in Stuffville’s Daily News by the local DA, which appeared to be a planned, transparent, repeated innuendo campaign. It looked fishy. Smelled too.

Mr. Sultid has claimed innocence of word theft and has asked for proof, but Stuffville’s District Attorney (we’ll call him DA Duke Lacrosse) has not responded or clarified. Coincidentally, the DA, a rogue prosecutor, is currently running for reelection. Providing no evidence of word theft yet continuing with accusatory snippets, the contrived Mr. Lacrosse is now under suspicion himself for slander, for leveling false accusations, for pressing unfunny and unwarranted charges and for trying his case in the media. It appears that he has waged a campaign to sway voters.

As we know, falsely accusing someone of “word adoption” is tantamount to public slander. If accusing of plagiarism, one may as well saddle the plaintiff with liar and a cheat labels as well. Mr. Sulted remains confused by the negative charge and maintains his innocence. Perhaps the attack stemmed from his being deemed a threat, since he and DA Lacrosse owned adjoining property in Stuffville. The DA has demonstrated that he wants more land for development and has been known to consider neighbors as real estate competitors.

Now there’s been a break in the case.

Seems a friend of the dubious DA (we’ll call him Mr. Montague Earl Tinks) has been brought in for questioning relating to several recent hit and run incidents as well as questioning on his role as an accessory to the DA’s false charge/slander crime. The case takes an odd twist when Mr. M.E. Tinks offers up contradictory testimony, thus unwittingly implicating himself as an accessory. We’ll pick up the interview here:

JOE FRIDAY: This is the town of Stuffville, near the city of Blogtropolis. I work here. I carry a badge.

    BILL GANNON: How’s that, Joe?

JOE FRIDAY: There are many fine residents and over thirty thousand people that visit this community who know that being a policeman is an endless, glamorless, thankless job that’s gotta be done. I know it, too. And I’m damned glad to be one of them.

The founder and esteemed Mayor of Stuffville enters the room.

STUFFVILLE MAYOR: I’m tired of all the name calling in the streets. I just wish Stuffville would get back to the peaceful place we all love. I’m tired of the rumors, accusations and sniping. I’ll close Main Street if order isn’t restored soon. What do you know so far Sergeant Friday?

JOE FRIDAY: All we know are the facts, ma’am.

    BILL GANNON: How’s that, Joe?

JOE FRIDAY: We’ve brought a pal of the DA on a hit and run charge. He also knows something about the slander case. For some reason he returned to the scene of the crime last night and tossed another stink bomb… but he got something he didn’t count on.

    BILL GANNON: What’s that, Joe?

JOE FRIDAY: On his drive by he ran into a Comcast IT Repair truck and kept going. That’s throwing, hitting and running in my book.

    BILL GANNON: How’s that, Joe?

JOE FRIDAY: He was bobbing and weaving all over the road. All right Officer Gannon, bring in Mr. Tinks. Let’s see what he knows.

JOE FRIDAY: Mr. Tinks, do you know anything about the hit and run?

MR. TINKS: Goodness! No! I remember going out for a drive over to the Cahoots Diner for pie and cheese soup but I don’t recall hitting anyone.

JOE FRIDAY: Sure, right. How about your pal, the DA and his charge of word adoption and the pleas of innocence by the accused? Didn’t you drive through the alley behind the Diner and throw a few stink bombs yourself?

MR. TINKS: Goodness! I don’t recall that. I was merely exploring the neighborhood and got lost in the translation. My car hasn’t been running properly. That and, umm…Oh! That’s right… my car engine computer has been intermittent. Computer crash! I don’t have an opinion of that which you speak nor did I intend anything by ignoring the charges of word adoption. I didn’t even see that post I ran over in the alley or the Comcast truck parked there. I’m innocent of anything improper and my silence was only a consequence of the malfunctioning vehicle. And, oh… the windows wouldn’t work either, so I couldn’t roll them down. Didn’t hear a thing. I know nothing. I see nothing. I throw nothing. I stir nothing.

JOE FRIDAY: Then why didn’t you chime in and right a wrong for an accused denizen? Instead, you appropriated gas at the Asseveration Fill’erUp Station and tossed it on the accusation fire.

BILL GANNON: DA Lacrosse was in the car with you. Do you deny this?

MR. TINKS: Why yes, he was in the back seat with his French poodle.

    JOE FRIDAY: That fits.

MR. TINKS: Goodness! I certainly didn’t mean anything by my silence or my subsequent seemingly accusatory dialogue about the word theft charge. It was just a bemused joyride that I partook in. It was merely an innocent play on words, turning this way and that. Having so stated, I would not have materially changed my response to driving reflexes. A tempting eloquent opine of accusation cannot be avoided, no matter the charge. My noble intention was to merely see if the onion was layered enough. Onions are complex, just like law and political campaigns. Oh, and if I did say anything hurtful or toss anything smelly or accusatory it was purely by accident. Or, um… coincidental, or maybe I was jesting. Yes, that’s the ticket!

BILL GANNON: Boss, I have no idea what he just said.

JOE FRIDAY: Sometimes it’s more about what’s not said than what is said, Officer Gannon. Many a truth is told in jest, yet some jests hurt the innocent. It’s sad when a drive-by citizen contributes to the slander of a another citizen, unwittingly or not.

BILL GANNON: You want me to read him his rights, Joe?

JOE FRIDAY: No Officer Gannon… no need for that. Let him go but slap him with a BUI charge.

    BILL GANNON: What’s that, Joe?

JOE FRIDAY: You see, he may not have been drinking, but he was behind the wheel, he knocked out a meaningless post in the alley and he hit a parked vehicle. That’s a moving violation in any precinct.

BILL GANNON: Should he post bail, Joe? Fine?

JOE FRIDAY: No fine and no bail necessary. He’s not being charged with anything. Let him walk, even though he was surely under the influence of somebody or something.

    BILL GANNON: How’s that?

JOE FRIDAY: I just played a hunch.

Friday and Gannon leave. The report is filed.
