WOODSTOCK, GA – Like many, I’m a fan of music, influenced by my kids, peers, and generation. Too often I hear the music, yet not the lyrics, which can be embarrassing once they sink in. While driving, though, alone in my thoughts, some songs deliver a message, my perception, naturally. On a recent trip, several reminded me of: Braves & Stuff

CL’s ‘little world’, created for us: shared sentiments, values, and yet…mirroring society, and even family dynamics, “why can’t we all just get along?” We love our Braves, share discourse over ‘Stuff’, and on both counts, we will disagree, although not always agreeing to do so. Metaphorically, or is it analogous (go ahead, it’s healthy to debate), I thought: Onions
The blog is the onion; ‘we’, its layers, with all our passions, idiosyncrasies, experiences, faiths, values, expectations, and so forth. Is it realistic to expect, trifling or not, that toes won’t be stepped upon? The process of understanding can oft-times be painful yet, isn’t that most treasured, worth enduring the process to make better?

Of course the reason I come back is no where else is there the level of eloquence as displayed on the B&S blog. Excellent work Salty. And SG, a most humorous and insightful post at the end of the last blog. Perhaps we don’t always see the humor if we are the targets of such lampoons but funny to the rest of us. Of course, those who cannot take it should not dish it out….
A dust up now and then is not a bad thing but folks can get a little carried away with their retorts. Sometimes it is the innocent (is there really such a thing) bystanders who are wounded in the drive by.
Now, I don’t mind a bit of civil discourse but lord don’t we all get a little tired of the drama queens? (or kings) ….
I do not profess to be the sharpest knife in the drawer but I try… To input a bit of my experiences and observation and trying not to sound the complete idiot. I don’t mind occasionally being called and idiot but I know I am not so it is all in jest. I am also not so stupid as to know when an attack is personal and malicious and would act accordingly as I have done in the past. That said…

I’m tired of the “African-American” designation. How about just “black”? I don’t get offended at being called “white”. Even when I’m not literally “white”… more of a light tan mixed with a touch of burnt sienna with a larger dab of oyster shell off-white, to be more accurate with the paint combo.
Also, I don’t require being called just a white guy, instead of German- Scottish-Welch-French-American.
That would take up way too much ink.

And, because I know y’all really care, the Figure Skating World Championships were quite good. Men’s Final today was particularly exciting. The top 6 were so close in points after the short program that any one of them could have won.

FBG: Splenda is fine, but with the right ingredients processed sugar is not necessary or even missed. Either just fruit or honey. It’s all good.
Now… I’m hitting the hay. Early morning. Take the blog for a run FBG and dominate. Put the late nighter’s to shame. Oh, and don’t you worry… Smoltzy is a real guy… he’ll be there.

You could probably even make the shortcakes without sweetener at all. I think the recipe only calls for 3 TBS of sugar & it makes 6.

Actually, SG, in the ice dancing the theme for the Original Dance this season was “folk or country dance” & skaters were encouraged to use traditional dances from their home. John & Sinead Kerr, being Scottish, took that to heart. He skated in a kilt. So I guess one of the guys did kind of wear a skirt.

Strawberry Shortcakes
2 1/4 cups Bisquick
3 tbs sugar (or Splenda)
3 tbs melted butter
2/3 cup milk
sliced strawberries
whipped cream
Heat oven to 425. Stir Bisquick, sugar, butter & milk until soft dough forms. Drop by 6 spoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8 to 11 min. or until light golden. Split warm shortcakes, fill and top with berries and whipped cream.
Very easy & delicious. Also would be good with mixed berries.

Let’s see… I got a new shaped cake pan. It has 2 halves that when you put the baked cake together make a giant cupcake. My mom is crazy about cupcakes. So that was mostly for her benefit.
Looks like I’ll get to spend the last 3 weeks of May in Rabun. That will be the longest I’ve been there in one trip so I should be able to get some serious painting done. No TV there yet so I’ll be catching the Braves on radio. Mom suggested loaning her laptop so I won’t be completely out of touch.

First, I realize I’m in the minority on the following, and my opinion, rightfully so, counts for nothing. And, of course, the only opinion which matters is our blogmeister’s.
But, as I’ve said before, and a couple of others said earlier, I wish that most anything posted would remain. Mainly because, as I think Salty posted, confusion arises for those of us who missed the post, or can’t go back and review the post. And I think respectful disagreement is necessary for this, or any, blog to thrive.
All that said, I’m astounded that there’s any bickering amongst you folks at all. In my opinion, you’re taking this too seriously.

From what I can gather, jjs has, I thought, playfully accused SG of posts which are “similar.” And Mr. Guy thinks maybe not so playfully. I’m not sure which, and am too lazy to go look.
What I do know, is that on many occasions I have copied your style, jjs, and even used terms I think you originated. I thought imitation was the sincerest form of flattery. Oh, the humanity, the lower case, the toes, tushy….I’ve used ’em all. I knew they were yours….didn’t care….thought they were funny….thought everyone knew they were yours. (OK, I’m not sure about oh, the humanity or your and idiot; both were well established a year or so ago when I found the blog)
So, I say all that, to say that I find most, if not all, here entertaining. And I reserve the right to willfully copy, reuse, reword, paraphrase, butcher, or do any other thing at my whim, until not allowed to do so.
Again, whatever it is, cannot be that serious.

True story about Gregor Blanco last year. The wife and I were setting in the box seats right behind the home on deck circle during the R Braves final game for the IL Championship. Gregor came out of the dugout and proceeded to the on deck circle. As he was only about 5 feet from the stands, one of the kids tried to start a conversation with him. At first he attempted to block out the distraction but the kid was pretty persistent. Finally, he looked up to see who was doing all the talking. The kid was not obnoxious but he was inquisitive and ask him about his family and if he had any brothers or sisters. Gregor remained polite and yielded to the impromptu interview. Suddenly he duck down into the dugout and when he returned, he handed the boy a baseball. Talk about gaining a fan for life… Real class act Gregor is. I hope he sticks with Atlanta this year, he has earned it.

As far as the move to Gwinnett, I am still upset but what can I do about it? I know it was a business decision by the Braves just as it was by the City of Richmond. I think some folks were being led astray however. I will root for the Richmond team this year and watch Atlanta for a few more years but I suppose I will be watching the Nationals a bit more often. Two more years and they are going to be a real force in the NL east. It will take that long to rebuild the farm system that MLB let fall apart.

The rumor is that Detroit is interested in moving their AA franchise from Erie. Of course everyone knows the Nationals would love to locate a team here but no franchises available.
I think the thing that makes me angriest is the tripe being put out about the Richmond stadium being substandard. It reminds me so much of the guy who is trying to convince himself as to why he needs to buy a new car when the one he has only needs a set of tires.

Morning, all. I’ll let you get back in a moment to what is only now a partial domination, Steve. I think you and a number of others (obviously) are missing the point of this blog. CL created this place because exactly what’s going on now was going on in the “other” blog and she wanted to create a place where her and a few dozen of her closest friends could blog without all that nonsense ruining everything.
We DO NOT “need” that sort of stuff to thrive as a blog anymore than Bobby “needs” to platoon Matt Diaz against righties.
I’m sorry, Y’all, but there are literally thousands of blogs out there and if this one doesn’t suit your tastes there might be another one that does. The only rules on here are NOT outlined by the Constitution (as I’ve stated before and apparently need to state again), but rather whatever CL asks us nicely to adhere to. Which to this point has essentially amounted to “Be nice and no personal attacks.” Some here have tried to get around that by taking “veiled” shots at each other. Do you really think that doesn’t affect her (and others) the same way, if not worse? And before anyone feels “singled out,” this is aimed at a whole crowd more or less equally. And no, I’m not a hypocrite. Everyone knows how I feel about things; I regularly filter about 70% of what I really feel like saying because I don’t wish to offend my host.
Do you all snatch the bottle from your host and fill the glass to a different level when invited to dinner because you feel you’re entitled? I doubt it; nor should you do so here. You’ve probably already been poured more than you’ve deserved, as have I.
No, IMO, these comments do not NEED to stand in order for everyone to be able to sort out for themselves who’s wrong and who’s right. This is ALL nonsense and everyone participating should be ashamed of themselves for turning her hard-won little garden into so much un-shoveled fertilizer for you to play around in like you haven’t got any sense.
Don’t do this for me, because I really don’t much care who says what on my own (anyone who knows me can attest I rather enjoy a little controversy), but out of respect for her if you really have any, because this is her place and she’s repeatedly asked you not to publicly and probably privately.
Anyone who really feels wronged can settle anything that needs to be settled via e-mail without involving the general public, the rest amounts to a bunch of chest-thumping, ego stroking and whiny grandstanding. There are other places to do that that don’t involve people you “care” about.

I cringe at the idea that 20 years is the life expectancy of a sports stadium. Perhaps that is true if you do not perform upkeep but to just replace a stadium every 20 years is ludicrous.

thank you for, a while back, confirming that you read the overnights. I think, and thought so at the time, that your idea of sharing the responsibility for the blog is an excellent one. It seems to me it would just be an extension of sharing the leads. Like SG, I wonder, pragmatically, how that would work.
I sense that CL has been inundated with emails lately. I may be wrong, but when an issue arises, such as this latest spat, I think CL is forced to become invloved. Maybe it’s to try to change her mind re deletion, or make one’s point, but I am sure the Lady is busy enough. I suggest that such emails me as infrequent as possible.
Perhaps the first step would be to have someone else in charge of the pictures. A small, but tangible shift in responsibility.

Anyway, on Brandon Jones… Decent young player, good stroke and decent range. I think the extra time in Richmond this year will do him good. I am not sure he will develop into Jermain Dye but certainly not Michael Tucker. The Braves have a very solid farm system. Not as deep as Arizona or even Florida but they are spaced out pretty well. The only weak spots I see are first and third base. They seem pretty well set every where else.

I am a little concerned as it seemed BJ was perfect for Bobby’s beloved, and often successful, platoon. Yet, he seemed to be given no chance to make the squad this spring.

Blanco came on strong of late; I expect Bobby’s just not quite convinced he can do it over the long haul yet. I’m not either, though he’s obviously a keeper. He’ll probably take over for Diaz in left eventually if he’s not re-signed. Good story, Gil. We need to know these things.

I do read the overnights.
I don’t think anyone should be invited back to the blog unless they were(and none have been) wrongfully banished. If they left on their own, they can come back the same way.
Several, including the Grinch, made good points. I will let them stand on their own, which they are well-able to do. But, “veiled references” is at the heart of this whole thing, IMO. If everyone would say what and who they mean instead of playing this ring around my rosie, we would be much better off. NO, we would be better off without any of it, but as SG said, boys will be boys, at least occasionally.
As I told SG before he left for Atlanta, I won’t be around “as much” this week, but not because my feathers are ruffled. My mentor is allowing me to assist in trying a case this week. Yes, I am just a gofer but it involves a lot of research and writing. But, I’ll be here some, and lurking more.

I was in the middle of a post yesterday on the subject at hand….then I got a phone call from a friend who doesn’t have a computer, wanted me to print out apt info from Craigslist(Hard to explain to someone not on the computer why that wouldn’t work, since the phone #s are not next to listings)
Then right after getting off the phone with him, I get a call from my late Mother’s best friend. Mom’s been dead for almost 3 years now…I forget it didn’t just effect my Dad and me long-term, but others as well . She is going thru a rough patch in her marriage(Well, the whole thing has been a rough patch 😕 ) and is quite depressed, even “joked” about how financial problems would be solved if she were to just die….I don’t find that funny for several reasons. 1st, this woman got Cancer a few years before my Mom did, but it was caught early, and she is now doing fine, at least physically.
Secondly, it really bothers me since a former girlfriend killed herself about 5 years ago. A beautiful young girl from France….rich family, seemingly had everything to live for, but demons would not leave her alone(And the doctors in France thought she was overmedicated by U.S. doctors, so they cut the meds way down)
I got one last email from her, seemed just fine, better than in a long time…I thought about calling her a few weeks later, but a phone call to France would be expensive…needless to say, I have regretted that decision ever since. I know, what could I have done? Except I am really good at picking up on peoples problems….
So anyway, I did my very best impression of my Mom with her friend, and hit her with everything but the kitchen sink. Talked to her for 2 hours. Don’t think she listened all that much,(Her responses were mainly 3, 4 word ones like, “I can’t do that” and she is not the kind of person to see a shrink….guess I will grab some self help books for her.
She says there is no way she’d ever take her own life….from her religious viewpoint, that’s a ticket to hell. Hope she always feels that way….her problems are nothing to me, but a big deal to her. Wish my Mom was around to talk to her…

Then, to continue my fascinatin’ tale, my best friend called right after I got off from the second call! He could tell in my voice I was beat….so, talked to him for awhile, went to dinner, watched a movie….Dad got on the computer….

I think some here should re-read the first few blogs here, there was no trouble at all! Honeymoon period and all that. Everyone glad to see familiar names, and to be away from the constant anger and sniping at the other blog, and that was just from DOB! 😉
Bad language (And non-clever scatological wordplay)that you just knew was upsetting folks, and nothing was to be done with it. Did it bother you so a lot? Just leave, DOB didn’t care. He was a strict freedom of speech guy, unless like one day(The straw that broke this camel’s back) he deleted a JJS post, just because he felt like it.

SG, I am on a jazz blog that can get quite hairy. I am about the only non liberal on it. And I am not talking the kind of liberal WW or Lew are, I am talkin’ folks that would make them look like Reagan in comparison! To these folks Dennis Kucinich is too conservative!
I would gladly talk only about jazz and stuff, but they cannot not talk politics. And if you dare disagree with them, even politely, well you are Hitler reborn! And no way to get in the last word.
There are some sane liberals there, who will defend me if I am attacked too much(You know, if someone wishes me ill) but for the most part, I am on my own. I can take it. I used to worry too much about responses I needed to make….a few folks left after they started thinking what to say back to people, while laying in bed, or showering…I stuck it out…but, don’t post much on the political part of the forum anymore…and I learned to…. let the bad guy win every once in a while
A lesson learned by me. And others here can let things go. No one is going to remember what was said 1-2 months into the future. Unless someone calls someone a child molester, and that person would be banned I am sure….
I was so happy when this forum appeared. I thought, finally, a forum I can participate on that everyone will do their level best to be kind to their fellow boardmembers…and it was that way for the most part since it opened. If it can’t be perfect, I hope it can be near to perfect at possible….and since no one wants to stress out CL more than “life” does, I hope people will think before they post….
Gotta watch that first step off the soapbox, it’s a Duesy! 🙂

It’s nice to see that the Braves took my advice from a couple of months back and brought back Marquis Grissom to work for at least a week with the outfielders. I thought it was great advice when I said on the other blog. Evidently, they saw the wisdom in it as well. Couldn’t have a better guy maintain a lifelong association with the Braves and the Atlanta community.
The higher ups with the Braves do read these blogs. You could even see that with Chipper, who was well acquainted with the blogs enough to know and highly respect Lew.
Maybe we need to remember that. I think sometimes because this is such a close knit group, we think we are hidden from the outside world and so we can say or do anything to each other like we do at our house with our family.
The Braves and other do read what is going on here and do take bits and pieces of what we say seriously. If you want them to keep coming back to read our thoughts, maybe it’s time to stop the fighting.
OR if you are gonna fight, just fight. Say what it is you are itching to say. Do what it is you are itching to do. Stop dancing in circles around it.
I always find the best way to end a fight is to just fight. It eases the tension. The tension around a fight is no different than sexual tension.
The best way to end sexual tension is to stop dancing in frustrating circles with her, tell her how you feel, go get a room and get it on.
Same thing with fighting. Tell the one you wanna fight how you really feel, go out and back, and beat each other’s brains out.
The best and fastest way to remain best friends sometimes is to just beat each other’s brains out instead of being afraid to.

Two of my best friends on the blogs(ww and SG)became my friends after we duked it out AND THEN exchanged e-mails and found that we had much in common if we could get “testosterone turmoil” out of our systems. I’m in complete agreement that differences can be worked out with wonderful positive results. The only thing I asked and still ask is that it be done privately and not in public. I have offered to forward emails for the combatants if one or the other didn’t want his email address made known to the other/s.
MANY people come here every day to read what is written. ww was absolutely correct when he said that we forget that we are not in a private forum here.
Someone emailed for my thoughts on having designated monitors. I thought about it, then responded:
“My thought is: why should we need ‘monitors’ at all??
Everyone is supposedly a mature, educated adult with IQs above room temperature, who know the (two) rules and know the standard. Behavior outside of this is deliberate trouble-making. If invited to a formal dinner, who would show up in ragged cut-offs and a dirty, torn t-shirt? That would be a deliberate slap in the face of the host and an affront to all the other guests, making everyone uncomfortable and sorry they came. The whole affair is ruined.

I AM MAD AS HELL.
Several times over this past weekend I sat down and attempted to put into words, my thoughts and feelings about what has been happening over the past few days and weeks on this blog.
Consider yourselves lucky. Each of them would have made one of Savannah Guy’s epic posts look like a short story. The fact that I couldn’t quite distill my thoughts to a point where I was completely satisfied with the message, didn’t help, nor did some of the very good posts this morning as they largely said what I meant and felt. So I dumped them all in favor of this short(er) one.
I have two things to say. First of all, there are certain individuals here who should be absolutely ashamed with their behavior. This blog was created as a safe haven, an oasis, if you will. A place where friends could get together and blog about whatever was on their mind, in a safe and comfortable environment.
There is one simple rule here, and I quote this from Carolina Lady’s original blog lead on December 5.
The rules are simple: keep it clean and no attacks.
Pretty simple and easy to remember right? For some of the people for whom this very blog was created to climb onto the front porch of CL’s colossus and take a big fat crap is absolutely repulsive. You should be ashamed of yourself for taking advantage of your friend who has given so much of herself to create this spot for you. And we wonder why, with over 30,000 hits, this blog can’t attract any more regular bloggers.
The second point that I will make is one that I have made privately to CL via email previously and has been made again today. We should ALL have email addresses for the other regulars of this blog. If anyone, at anytime, has a problem with me or one of my posts you may reach me at:

Yep, if the effort is made, getting along is no problem. Believe me, when Paladin popped on the scene here, I figured my days were numbered. We sorted it out…likely without even realizing it. We just left bygones from DO’B’s world in the past and moved on…exchange e-mails pretty regularly, mostly ’cause some topics aren’t fit for B&S’ high standards! As you know, black and white is fine, but grey is Paladin’s favorite color! 😆

Anyone else as pleased as I am about Hampton’s outing yesterday?
JJ’s blow up is not a great concern, he is a rookie and like all rookies, he will stink up the place every third game or so.
I am really pleased with the bullpen too. Just a note, not a single pitcher on the Braves roster will make it through waivers if it comes to that.

Paladin is right. The two of us became great friends after a rather ugly public battle last year with each other just by exchanging emails with each other. It was actually resolved in the span of five emails. As for me and SG, we’ve never exchanged emails but we’ve also never hesitated to publicly overapologize to each other.
Berigan, my point is that if you are gonna fight, then just fight, if you wanna screw, then go screw. But also take it out back or go get a room. Fighting is not a bad thing. Neither is screwing. It just sucks for everyone else. Wherever you are, the endless and shameless sniping and flirting that precedes fighting and screwing annoys the ever living hell out of everyone even more than the fighting or screwing. Hell, fighting and screwing are funner to watch. But it really should be dealt with by taking it out back or getting a room for the sake of those who don’t like to see a good fight or a good screw.
As for differences between being a Yankee or whatnot, I’m not sure if that is true. It may be though. I think people get more offended for me or Lew when we occasionally throw down on each other than the two of us actually do by whatever is said or done to each other. Lew and I are both Yankee born and bred boys who grew up in an environment where people, including your best friends, said what they were itching to say, right to your face in the most blunt manner possible. It usually led to more fights but also less grudges.
At this point, I still have no idea who is really fighting or what is being fought about and I read every post. All I know is that every few hours I have to duck for cover because grenades are being tossed aimlessly about and cars with their headlights turned down are doing drive bys and riddling the area with bullets.
It just sounds like a Mafia or gangland movie where someone spilled some wine on someone’s cashmere suit and now bullets are flying all around but no one even knows why the bullets are flying. The fight would have been better handled if the doofus who spilled the wine on the suit was dragged out back at that very moment and had his brains beaten out by the dude wearing the suit.
This ain’t supposed to be like Beirut.

I, myself, am a very non-confrontational person. Not only will I turn the other cheek, I’ll even attempt to deflect negativity around me. (Remember my over-the-top uplifting day?) I told a mystery blogger Saturday that we, like all families, will bicker amongst ourselves… human nature and all. Nothing wrong with that. Stirring the pot makes the stew cook evenly. Stirring too hard makes the stew spill out all over CL’s nice clean kitchen floor. That’s where the problem begins. If this kitchen had some crappy vinyl flooring, it might be different. But this floor isn’t crappy at all. It’s a beautiful white ash (subtle baseball reference) with an immaculate finish. The sign at the kitchen entrance says, The rules are simple: keep it clean and no attacks. I like the kitchen. I’ll obey the rules.

Thank you all for the warm greetings. The time away was good for me. Had I said some of the things that I felt last week, I might not have been welcome back here.
We are a diverse group and we won’t always agree on every issue. One of the greatest aspects of this country is our legal right to hold differing opinions. However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t all respect each other while we respect the very simple house rules.
Paladin, thanks for asking about the job thing. It’s sloooow out there. Not a lot of what I would term “legitimate” jobs that make a decent wage. Not that I can find anyway.

Gil; I was quite pleased with Hampton’s outing. I really think that he will contribute, a lot! As for JJ, he has shown us that he has the ability, but will need the 2 X 4 applied, from time-to-time. I also think we have the best BP that we have had in a LONG time and it is probably the best in the NL, and certainly in the NL East. Now, how is that for talking baseball, before I finally get to work?

I have always enjoyed reading y’all’s words and perspectives and gained even more respect for you both for the way that incident was resolved.

Yeah, Paladin, I think you are right that it only took one email from you and then from me.
It also led to both of us becoming email buddies with The Grinch because he used the opportunity to become good friends with both of us as well. When I threw my email out there on the old blog, Grinch emailed me and told me I was in the wrong and that Paladin was a good dude and I should have given Paladin more of a fair shake than I did that time. After Paladin and I made peace with each other, I gave Paladin the Grinch’s email and told him he should email Grinch because I thought they would become good buds.
Grinch is a great peacemaker. He helped resolve differences between SG, Paladin, and myself with his humor and his blunt nature. Whenever there are differences and then all of a sudden inexplicable peace, you should believe Grinch did something behind the scenes. Grinch deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. Perhaps, from now on, whenever someone fights they need to be told to exchange emails with the Grinch instead of CL. KInda like airing out your differences with the Godfather Don Corleone.

By the way, A&E is finally showing season 6 of the Sopranos, so it won’t be long before I have completed that masterpiece of television. (I didn’t have HBO as a youngster in college, so I’m in catch-up mode…still trying to avoid spoilers at all costs.)
Well after a long weekend of NCAA March Madness (I love the opening rounds) it’s time for me to focus on the world of baseball, turkey hunting and the upcoming child birth. It’s going to be a busy spring. The wasps are out, the grass is growing, the pollen is blanketing everything in sight, the air conditioner is rolling those kilowatt hours up higher and higher. Yeah, Hillbilly, I am pumped about Season 6 as well on A&E. That’s the only season I have not watched. I don’t have HBO, so I used to rent them at Blockbuster. But I haven’t been to Blockbuster in 2 or 3 years now. So, I’m gonna try to watch it on A&E now although I already know how it ends thanks to the media.

When you get the chance, watch the video. It’s rough at the end (probably used a cell phone), but captures the surprise of the audience. I went to a Josh Groban concert, at which this violinist played. I assure you, none of us saw this coming…it was pretty cool, to say the least!

I just returned from lunch(Stuffed bell-pepper, mashed ps w/gravy, fried okra, corn sticks and sweet tea. Followed by blue berry cobbler[any relation? 😀 ]. Food for the soul)and that stuff falling from the sky–sorry Larry–was not sugar. Ain’t spring wonderful?

FBG…a couple of the other videos are actually better sound quality…but you got the essence. I actually bought the concert tix the morning of the show. I didn’t know he was in town; my sister called to say she was going, a surprise gift. So, while on the phone with her, I went on line, and bought at face value…to the right of the stage…within 30 feet of Groban at times. I knew he had a voice, but he is quite an act…surprised the heck out of me! 🙂 But…Lucia almost stole the show…seems to be the general reaction!

Buddy’s probably fine; Ridgeway, on the other hand, impresses me with his honesty and forthcoming nature. He wanted to prove Richmond is where he should go, and performed admirably in that role. Walks, errors, hits, six runs! Ouch!

If you’re not, then I’m with ya. I have been very annoyed with the way he has approached spring training this season. It really smells like someone who thinks they are bigger than the team. Simulated games are not real games. Throwing to and goofing around with Tiger Woods on the backfields does not simulate a darn thing about how a real game is played. Smoltz is starting to publicly sound like he has one foot in and one foot out the door.
Kind of an overreaction by me but it is really ticking me off. I have been quiet about it because it is Smoltz and I trust him. But your post gave me the courage to say something out loud about what has been nagging me all spring. Starting the season on the DL? If this was a real media market, a columnist would have had an article out Sunday morning throwing some serious questions about this spring in the direction of Smoltz.

Yeah, Paladin. I love and trust Smoltz too. No one works harder and wants to play more but this approach he has had this spring is very puzzling. Either his arm was killing him all winter and he thought he needed to try something new or ……. I just shouldn’t go there. It’s alot easier to get your simulated innings wrapped up in a half hour to an hour and go golfing then to go on bus rides and sit there for an entire 3 hour game.

All I know is that Rocket(steroids[?] and all)worked his butt off in the winter, spring, summer and fall. Just as Smotz has learned that he can’t rely solely on his fast ball, he has to work harder at this point in his career.

Yes WW, I was serious about the golf. I am not saying that a guy should not be allowed a bit of down time but like a wise sage once told me. “You need to remember who is paying you”.
My sole personal experience with Fats Domino was at Tantilla dance hall (since torn down) in Richmond where he was too drunk to be able to perform as advertised. This was in the early 70s so it is not like he was trying to make a comeback.
Concern about the braves bats, Yes and no. While I would like to see a bit more run production, I try to keep in mind that many times during “real” games, it is not until the third and fourth turns through the order that the bats come alive.
Watch for yourselves this season and see if the team that is able to hold the other team scoreless in the 5th and 6th innings isn’t the winner the majority of the time.

Morning, all! Agreed about Smoltz; the week I was down there he looked like all grab-butt and no business. Waiting for the fans to leave and then flying out of the dugout in golf shoes and a goofy shirt, hopping into and already rolling golf cart and hauling out of there at high speed. Don’t much care for it; this year we’ve got a much better chance than last if he does well; he’s too important to be taking this so lightly. It’s not like he’s 30 anymore.
Time to light the grill.

Gil, I just thought it was a great video and Salty thought it would be good “stuff” to share … it was fun for me, just seeing them together, having a good time.
All three were pieces of work … but I sure did enjoy their music! Ray had drug problems and many children, 3 of which were born in wedlock, methinks. I never saw Fats live, except perhaps on TV … really liked his sound but thought his popularity waned before the 70’s. Jerry Lee’s antics and problems are legendary but I always enjoyed his energy and his music … still do. I had tickets to see him perform in Rome, Georgia … back in the day, but couldn’t attend. They said he shot out the tires on a car in the parking lot that night … can’t remember why. The most remarkable thing about ‘The Killer” may be that he’s still alive.
Seemed like the DJ played “I got a woman” at least 50 times the first day it came out in 1954/55 … WGST methinks … who was Ray Charles?? We saw him in concert in Nashville about 5 years ago, one of his last … truly delightful … actually fantastic … not quite the “Three Tenors” but then, nothing ever topped them, methinks.
Of course, I have a looped John Cash play list on my computer … 110 songs … and that’s most always on in the background.

Then you talk of those who supposedly have the “ill manners” to settle differences on a blog… it’s all useless, weak, pseudo-philosophical dribble! Dammit people! What next… The Captain and Tennille? For those bloggers that drop in and are not regulars or those that may live in Rio Linda, the above post was a spoof. We do that here sometimes. This really is the best bunch of denizens in the universe. We’ve got prose writes that challenges us with their complexity and makes us all smarter as a result… from the likes of Bob, Journalist. We have amazing humorists like Journalist Jimmy Smith, who has probably coined more blog phrases and expressions that any blogger alive. We have so many… well, stick around. Much talent here on Braves and Stuff.
Sometimes we get a bit carried away with verbal jousts (all comparatively harmless and well within the boundaries of respectful, moral repartee) and sometimes the pendulum swings a bit too far towards group-hugging and such… kissy-kissy, smoochy-smoochy stuff, but you get the picture. It’ll damn near make you blush… or spit up your lunch (kidding).
Thing is, two or three of us get in a rubber-tipped fencing duel and those that pick up the skinny swords all get tomatoes tossed their way. Makes a fine tomato sauce if you like Italian. All around great neighborhood and great folks, to a person. Well, maybe not that one who… (kidding).
And if you don’t like it I’ll bop you on the noggin… see? Had you going again there, eh? Anyhoo, a finer bunch of individuals cannot be found on any blog, anywhere, any time… period. Not kidding at all.

Well, it is coming down to crunch time on the daughter’s car. Of course my wife had to reel me in and remind me that she (my daughter) is picking the car, not me. So by Wednesday the deed should be done.

I was surfing the net and ran across a piece about Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays being sent down to Durham. Folks, that kid is a bona fide star in the making. I saw him play last fall against Richmond and that boy can flat out hit… A long way too. Only 22 years old but plays older. Get his rookie card while you can. He will be a Super Star someday.

Gil, for many years the Rays Low A affiliate was here in Charleston. Because they performed so poorly at the big league level, they always had very high draft picks and almost all of them came through here. Josh Hamilton (now with the Rangers) was an incredible player and even more incredible human being. Glad to see him getting it together. Delmon Young and BJ Upton also played here. Both were jerks, but good ball players. I’ve been saying for a couple of years now that if they could ever develop any pitching, they might put a good year together. Either way, they are fun to watch.

Gil, I’ll probably go to at least a few Rays games. It’s too close not to. By the way, they get very irate when people say they’re in Tampa. The Trop is actually in St. Pete & someone always has a hissy fit if an announcer or someone just says Tampa instead of Tampa Bay. Overreaction, IMO.

It was reported tonight that someone broke into a local gun shooting range and stole over 20 hand guns. The reported said that the local police were concerned that the guns would fall into the hands of criminals.
Well duh…. stolen guns? I think the criminals are the ones who stole them…

Sometimes, like with John Adams, you watch the first part and everything clicks… the direction, cinematography, the script, the acting, the sets, costumes, sound, music, etc. and you just know it’s going to be very good. I’ll never forget seeing the first ten minutes of a film once and thinking that it would win an academy award for either best picture, best actor or both. That film was Lonesome Dove. I was not wrong. If you haven’t seen it, please do.
CL: On New Amsterdam, I’ve got episodes 2,3,4 on DVR. Haven’t seen one minute of any yet but it looks interesting. I’ll watch them this week and get caught up. You still liking it?

I used to read everything King wrote. Then he got into a stage where he had a new book coming out every Tuesday and I lost interest. Most of the movies based on his book didn’t translate well. I’m no expert but I suppose that speaks volumes about his ability to paint a picture, especially about those things that run through people’s heads that are hard to put in a movie. The Shining was/is IMO the greatest exception to that statement though. Great movie. I’ve watched it many times over the years.

Just while I’m innocently bloviati…uh, corresponding and about to tuck in for the evening, I get ganged up on by two tipsy roughnecks hanging at Klobber’s Saloon.

WW and Chris, there is no way I stole those guns. I do have a concealed weapon permit (which says something for my criminal record) and lots of guns (which says something else I guess)… but there is no more room in my locker for guns or bullets. Well, maybe one or two more, but that’s it. Can quit anytime I want.

And John Adams…. Yes, a very well made piece. I thought episode three was a bit tedious at times. Once you have seen it, I will discuss it with you SG. Still, very nicely done. It gives the viewer a good since of the conditions of the period. It does not rely on a lot of the glitz to tell the story.

Gil; Certainly the Braves are not directly involved, but as a Sawx fan, also, I am bitter as hell. First, the “home” fans deserve the game to be played in the good ole USA. And, jet lag and all, the teams can be hurt by this. Finally, it’s only a money grabbing move by the owners, with slugs like Budsie lining their pockets and saying to hell with the fans. America’s past-time? Not any more.

One thing to add. Salty, in a way, outed me yesterday. He told how when I first came to this blog that he thought, “well that’s it for me”. Ballroom dancing is incredibly difficult. Like pairs skating and ice dancing it requires a perfect melding(not that kind)of partners. To put is in to prospective: Those pairs that look so good on Dancing with the Stars wouldn’t make it to the sweet sixteen at the average Ballroom competition. But, I will admit. They(the women)sure look good.

I see that the Mets released 2nd baseman Ruben Gotay. Kind of surprising in that he’s only 25 and hit .295 in 190 at bats. Does he have the rep of being a bad fielder??? If you can’t trade a 25 year old 2nd baseman to someone, for something….it’s going to be a weird time to trade anyone that doesn’t pitch….

Berigan, I don’t know. Listening to Wren talk during the game the other day, it seemed that he had a good plan. Now, whether or not he can execute that plan has yet to be determined.
I think that he wants to upgrade Thor’s spot on the roster. He just has to find a willing partner. One thing I don’t want to see is a move made just for the sake of making a move. I also don’t want to see the Braves lose goes on waivers and get nothing in return. I’d rather them get a prospect back than nothing at all.

Gil, that’s funny. Reminds me of a story. I remember one day when I was six. My mother was making my bed when the phone rang. She went to answer it and I decided that I would show her what a big boy I was and make my own bed. She returned a few minutes later to a somewhat well-made bed. Of course, she was very impressed and I had to make my own damn bed every morning after that.

That makes me think of a recent conversation with my family, Chris. Dad & I are going to the house in Rabun for 3 weeks in May. My mom & sister can only get the last week off from work so they’ll be on their own here for 2 weeks. When they realized this, they went into a mini-panic about dinner, laundry, cleaning, etc. I had to show them how to turn on the dishwasher. I think I’ve spoiled them.

Gil, as far as trades go, I’m not sure. I’d like to think that Thor will be gone. I don’t see him being a big contributor. My ten-year-old has a quicker swing thru the zone than he does. But, I can see someone taking a flier on him. There are a lot of pitchers that are either on the bubble or out of options. I like Yates but suspect that he may be traded. I’d like to see Resop stick around but he may be gone too. We’ll just have to see. Historically, the Braves have done some last minute roster tinkering just before the season begins. I do have faith in Wren to get something done though.

Well, it looks like I was wrong in one assumption I made about Redmond though: He is not a groundball pitcher. He is much more of a flyball pitcher. Someone pointed me in the direction of the First Inning website that has GB/FB ratios for minor leaguers. I’ve been dying to find that. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to have historical GB/FB ratios for Jurrjens, Carmona, and Wang so that I can see if I am right about Jurrjens.

I have read that the Tigers are looking for a backup catcher, which would indicate that Inge is on the way out. Inge is their primary backup C and 3B. They also released one of their few LHR’s (Byrdak) today. So… If Inge can back up C and 3B, can he also play any 1B? If so, why not BPena and Ring to Detroit for Inge and prospect?

I remember when I used to come down to Atlanta when I was a kid, my aunt and uncle used to take us over to Stone Mountain. They had the train that went around the mountain and the Indians would attack the train. They used to sell Confederate flags all over that place too. Loved Nochahoma and the Indian symbols of the Braves. Thought it was so fun and cool when I was a kid.
I was highly disappointed when I moved to Stone Mountain myself 15 years later and there were no more Indians attacking trains and no Confederate flags to be found and just a boring A as the symbol and no mo Nocahoma.
I would never be able to run for President because there are too many photos of me spread out across the riff raff of my family with me waving the rebel flag like a little nut.
My brother and I even brought a few rebel flags home with us to New York when we were like 8 or 9 but I think my parents made sure those flags got lost before we went running out in the street waving them and found ourselves shot dead in the Bronx. They just disappeared one day.

Wilson had TJ surgery in June… Inge was the primary backup. The fact that Wilson should be ready to return is even more reason for Inge to be expendable. I don’t think he’d be the primary backup here, anyway. That’ll probably go to Miller. The point is that he is expendable to Detroit, and could be a vaulable banch player here. Also, barring injury, Tex isn’t coming out of the lineup. (Not in a contract year, especially.) I was simply speculating that given Inge’s ability to play 3B and C, that 1B might be a possibility as well. (Those 3 often go hand-in-hand.)

Klobber, what they don’t seem to realize is that the day we remove Native American symbols and names from sports teams is the day we all forget they existed and what we all did to them.
My favorite college basketball team was the St. John’s Redmen back when they had Chris Mullin. I have refused to ever call them the Red Storm since they went all p.c. They will always be the Redmen to me.
I think some of the p.c. stuff has been good because it has made us more responsible and knowledgeable about their culture and the atrocities committed upon them but if Florida State or the Braves are ever ordered to change their names, it will be the dumbest thing ever done for their legacy.

Man… leave for a few hours and y’all get all political… and I agree on every bit of it. We are undergoing the Z”globalization” of American society. No longer is it PC to be a melting pot… it’s a gathering of self-interest groups.
Most folks don’t expect or desire to be referred to as a hyphenated American, so why should anyone? African-American is the ultimate PC designation. How many blacks have ever set foot on Africa anyway? I’m tired of the slave guilt bit too. At some point in history we were ALL slaves. The biggest group of slave holders were those IN and FROM Africa. If anyone should be considered worthy of hyphenated minority status due to society persecution (genocide) it should be the Native-American.
What will we accomplish if we all demand to be hyphenated Irish-American, German-American, Polish-American, Lithuanian-American, Italian-American… so on and so forth. Gets ridiculous. Perhaps we should, to drive the hypocrisy to its obvious and absurd conclusion.

When you get citizenship you should be required to drop hyphenations, drop loyalties to your nation of origin, speak english, have a job and pay taxes… or leave. If you can’t find a job, we might just have a long wall you can chip in and build for minimum wage. Or a war you can help fight.

I was working at a bar up in New York that was always filled with Irish immigrants (including many of the illegal variety). I was talking to a bunch of them and at one point I said something about how I was Irish. One of the drunken Irishman laughed at me and said, “You’re not Irish. You’re American.”

Greetings all, whew… busy day for me. It was so nice outside, I decided to take advantage of it and do a little yard work. Silly me, it soon escalated into removing three tree stumps… So much for getting up the stick out of the yard as originally intended. I nearly turned my tractor over three times trying to get the biggest and most stubborn rascal. Then another hour smoothing out the holes.
I know I am going to pay dearly for that bit of work performed today but at least the pain will have been derived honestly.
Speaking of politics… (smooth transitions wouldn’t you all agree?) .. A great observation made by one wag the other night on TV referencing the government’s bail out of airlines and Bear Sterns that these folks are full capitalist when it come to making profits but become socialist when facing losses.

Hey Gil. Just watched part three of John Adams last night. It was interesting. The man was not quite the ideal ambassador, was he. Then again, it would have been a monumental task to make nice and play with the decadent French at that time. Adams had a few bad days there on all fronts. Certainly a look at the man and the circumstances that hasn’t been portrayed in film before.
Not as much action as the first two, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Can’t wait for the next part. It’s about to get serious.

I am glad you watched it, now I can talk about it… Adams was never know for his tact. He was very agitated by Frankin’s lack of forcefulness in dealing with the French.
I thought the movie dwelt too much on his illness while in Holland. It really slowed the movie down. It is the only real negative I have felt since watching the show. I called today to activate HBO… Well, I want to see who wins the war… 🙂

Gil, agreed about part 3. Man, Adams had it coming on all fronts there. The plot had a few quick edits that I also didn’t care for, like POOF, son gone to secretary in… Russia? Then, the Franklin letter… BAM, out of the blue. Holland… uh, here we are, don’t know how we got here. Sick as a dog… where?
Still, love that stuff. I’m no historian but I think I remember reading that the combination of Adams’ passion and bluntness and Franklin’s savoir faire won the day in France. Either man alone could not have accomplished getting the level of support we gained.

Raisins, that might present my son with a problem. My folks got him a guitar for Christmas. He hasn’t done anything with it yet as he’s very busy with baseball and he’s already taking cello lessons. He is planning on taking guitar lessons this summer. Hope GH3 doesn’t goof him up.

Unfortunately, today many historians apparently have a complex about greatness and try to accent the negative rather than reinforce the positive. It is the old, “Well he was pretty great… but… ”
Personally, I think they are just trying to justify their own frailties rather than acknowledge that someone might be superior to them in intellect.

WW, I’m curious to know why you didn’t like my slave guilt comment and looking back, I can see where my words could be taken several ways. Since you made the effort to point out that you didn’t like what I said, I’ll try to expand just a bit to clarify. Then, you may want to disagree, agree, like it or not… or just know more about my opinion on the matter and let her ride. Before you do, please know:
I believe that slavery is inhumane and a pox on any society that has ever engaged in it turned a blind eye to it or profited by it. Our forefathers that were involved in slavery and/or inhuman treatment of any human being will answer for it. At the same time, early societies had a completely different set of circumstances, values and customs. That does not condone it but we can’t forget that either. Nor can we continue to blame others for our own choices.
Every civilization has built itself on the backs of slaves. Romans, Egyptians, Incas, Aztecs, Greeks, English, French, Chinese (continuing today)… every civilization that has ever lived on this earth has been involved in slave labor. Since this is such a controversial subject, I’ll repeat… so that anyone reading this is clear on my position: in no way am I condoning slavery. I abhor any kind of slavery, but here’s the point… should we feel guilt? Does guilt help anyone?
I think not.
There is a huge difference between having a conscience and feeling guilt. There is a huge difference between “feeling” guilt and doing something to help those that need it. Guilt has never put a meal on a table, it’s never educated or trained someone for a job or healed the sick. Guilt is poison and is unhelpful… like envy, jealousy and hatred. There’s a huge difference between “feelings” and helpful action.
So, how might we resolve the wrongs we have done as a society and for how long? What would cleanse America and other countries of guilt for past sins? Anarchy? Punishment of slave owner descendants? Reparations? Returning slave descendants to their country of origin? Permanent welfare? Adopt a sustained culture of white guilt?
If we consider these absurd solutions then don’t we also have to wrongly make the leap to assume that blacks or any other group with slave ancestors are not intelligent enough or capable of caring for themselves, educating themselves and lifting themselves by the bootstraps and, like all other races and cultures, become part of a larger, productive society?
Some may believe that they are not worthy of managing their own lives and work hard to build government programs to solve all of the world’s problems. I don’t buy into that. Should an incentive based, capitalistic society separate out some races and create a disincentive for them to help themselves? No, human nature doesn’t work that way. It’s been proven in every society since the beginning of civilization that, if you remove the incentive or possibility for self-improvement, you stifle or destroy those being coddled or punished by racism or segregation.
Those “solutions” would only add other, larger burdens to entire generations and races of people that have already been disadvantaged and burdened enough by inept government welfare intervention.
OK, I’ll stop. I could but won’t go on. It’s a long, complex and controversial situation with no easy fixes. Guilt on the other hand is simple: it has no useful place in the world.
I’d like to hear your thoughts on the subject of slave guilt. Underline “guilt”.

I think I will call and reserve my tickets for Richmond’s opening game. They have a kid who plays 2nd base who I think is going to be pretty good. It is going to be interesting as to whom the opening day pitcher will be.

Hey P-Din, just checked out that clip, pretty good! Also, did everyone but me know that when you hover the mouse cursor over the link, not only do you get the sneak peak of the page(I knew that part at least) but with youtube clips, you can click on them to play, while still staying on this page??? I know you want to usually see a larger image, but still…technology, ain’t she grand?

SG-Immersed in painting deer. Apparently the chest cold was allergies (probably mold from all the wet). I went out and bought a Honeywell air filter. Hopefully that will help. All sorts of allergens in a 60 year old house-also Parrot dander and dog hair. If there is a potential air borne allergen, it will find me. I’ll mail your Tull anthology next week. I’ve been listening to it a good bit. Have to proof it, right?

–RF Jeff Francoeur says there’s no reason he can’t hit 45 doubles and 30 home runs. Francoeur added 17 pounds of muscle in his chest and shoulders, hoping for more endurance through the season.
–RHP Tim Hudson is lined up to be the starter when the Braves open the season against the Nationals March 31 in Washington. He has a 1.47 ERA in five Grapefruit League appearances.
–3B Chipper Jones is fighting a hook when he bats left-handed, producing topspin on the ball when he wants backspin. It hasn’t affected his spring average, though, as he is batting .350.
–RHP Tyler Yates was traded to the Pirates for minor league RHP Todd Redmond. Yates showed flashes of brilliance last season but has not been consistent this spring. With so many other pitchers in the wings — and several of those without options — Atlanta general manager Frank Wren wanted to move someone.
Redmond, 22, played in Class A and Class AA last year, going a combined 8-13 with a 4.39 ERA in 28 starts.
–INF Omar Infante will start the season on the disabled list as he recovers from a broken left hand. When he does come back, 1B Scott Thorman’s days may be numbered, as Infante can back up there as well as at third.

To all concerned-I just posted the preliminary drawing for Chipper’s Deer painting on my website LewHartman.Com in the wildlife gallery. This is what I paint over.
Actually Chipper’s problem is more of a slice than a hook. I commented on it at Spring Training, warning him not to take the slice to the golf course with him. He refused comment.

FBG-The allergens have not yet begun in the North Country. Wait a month or two and the pine pollen starts. Then in late summer/early fall, there are those entire fields of Golden Rod and Ragweed. Life is such a joy a certain times of the year. The only things that work alleviating the symptoms, put you into the Twilight zone, so you just suffer-sneeze, cough and use lots of Visine Tears. I should buy stock.

Thanks for the 411 CL! Sounds like there is no way Thorman can play himself off the team…too bad. I’d rather just have Borchard pinch hit every day and see what he could do til Infante is well…oh well.
Or run Flowers out there for April. He swings hard as well….and could he hit for a lower average???
Reitsma….a name when we all mention it 10-15 years down the road, everyone will groan….and the newer fans won’t get it! 😆

I know this goes back a little to a previous comment.
I didn’t realize Infante can play first as well. I don’t like to hate on Thorman but I don’t see where he fits in right now. I also like Bryan Pena but he’s better trade bait.
SG, Chipper made a big deal many years ago about quitting because he had a relative or loved one who contracted cancer. I think now he’s back on it though. Every now and then he’s shelling seeds but many times that looks like a Red man plug.
Don’t even dare mention Chris Reitsma.

For your allergies you might try Claritin, which is available without a prescription. Several years ago when the meth craze was getting so much pub a lot of the other similar medications changed their formula so they could still be sold off the shelf. Claritin didn’t change their formula so now you have to ask the pharmacist for it. You’ll probably have to show ID, give your family history, any criminal past, etc., etc. but the stuff works. No medicine head. I highly recommend it.
Allegra works well too with no side effects. That one is available only by prescription I think.

I had the honor of meeting Red Skelton once. He entertained a handful of us for a while and when asked a serious question he would instantly become a real person, drop the mask and give a heartfelt answer. Then he’d go right back to lightheartedness and humor. Great man. Funny man.
When asked what his typical day was like, he quipped, “well, I get up in the morning and check the obituaries to see what my old friends are up to. If I’m not there, it’s a great day”. No baseball connection that I recall.

Bravos get one back. 3-1, Mets advantage. Yunel smacked a single up the middle. He’s incredible. Chipper doubles. Still amazing. Sac fly by Tex. Sac fly doesn’t do it justice… the ball was crushed.
Moylan’s control was way off today. Resop took the mound in the 2nd and gave up a single and just got the side out. 2k’s for him.

Chris-Unfortunately, the only Claritan I can take with all my other medications doesn’t do a damn thing for my allergies. The only thing that works is Tavist and it puts me in a coma (figuratively speaking, of course). MY nose quits running, but so does the rest of me. There is no cure or treatment except suffering.

Another set of “parents” have allowed a child to die by relying on “faith” instead of Doctors. I’m sorry, but I am a Christian who believes in the power of prayer, but God is too busy to come to the aide of every child when he has put millions of Doctors and nurses on this planet to do so. You can believe anything you want, but if you allow a child to die because of your “faith”, you are a murderer.
