After five long months,
never missing a single beat, going it alone against any and all blogosphere odds, trudging ever forward with determination and grit, heads held high, chins up, computers and keyboards ready for action, a merry band of good denizens and pranksters set out to discover and settle a new and peaceable kingdom in a nice, quiet, respectable little corner of the Braves Nation.
After another missed post-season,
hanging ever tough and never ever losing any hope or dreams of victory, sucking it up and blogging together throughout the dreary winter doldrums, hanging on and measuring every word of hot-stove predictions, getting totally caught up in all of the anticipation of a glorious new season to come, sharing personal ups and downs, ins and outs and throughout it all…we laughed.
After braving the rain, sleet and snow,
the high wind, the devastating storms, the damaging tornados, the floods, the power outages… we stuck in there and blogged.
After all of that…
we also, somehow managed to amass an incredibly impressive 33 superb posts, 14,652 comments and 34,223 views…
I think we’re ready for some Braves baseball.
While considering an appropriate topic to write about for my lead on this special opening day, I have to admit that it was a real head-scratcher. What could possibly be said about the players, the teams, those that made the roster and those that didn’t after four months of speculation? On this first day of real, honest to goodness Braves baseball, where our season begins and the games really count, I assumed that nothing written by anyone anywhere could possibly be interesting alongside the excitement of this rite of Spring occasion.
Then it hit me like a hard up and inside Francoeur pitch! Just not, well, that painful or bloody, mind you. Here’s the thing: this day actually marks two very special events and should be cause for celebration, commemoration and congratulation. It’s opening day but it’s also a milestone for Braves and Stuff.
The march to October is 162 games, but we began by making the journey from October to March and we’re still here for the start of the 2008 Braves baseball season. Looks like we made it!
Beginning on December 5, 2007 at 4:42 pm, a first-ever lead was written and posted by our founder and gracious ‘hostess with the most-ess’, the esteemed Carolina Lady. A blog was born. Friends gathered. Braves and Stuff was officially launched.
We got off to a respectable but an expected slow start. Baseball was not being played and winter was upon us. Braves fans had once again come to grips with a second season without a playoff berth and settled into the realization that Braves Nation was now feeling what most other teams in Major League Baseball have felt and experienced many times in the last fifteen years.
Being loyal and resilient Braves fans, we denizens gathered around and stoked our own hot stove to talk baseball and ‘stuff’, meaning whatever else we had a mind to discuss. Soon, new and old friends found the time and came to the neighborhood. The good company of loyal Braves fans and blog denizens would surely get us through the ‘tunnel’ of off-season. And it did. Four months of time has flown by and the settlement is strong and the hits keep coming.
As of today, Braves and Stuff can proudly boast a sustained and successful gathering place. That’s quite an accomplishment for a brand new blog that just started in the off-season, especially considering that, according to Cyberjournalist.net, as of July 31, 2006, 50 million blogs were tracked. The blogosphere is doubling every six and a half months and about 175,000 new blogs are created every day. Most will no doubt be relatively inactive and sparsely populated until they are abandoned. It’s easier to start a blog than to fill it with contributors.
Add to that, the impressive fact that our Braves and Stuff blog has been created and populated with quality, sustained activity without any marketing or advertising whatsoever. No substantial money has been invested, no web or IT consultants have retained and no funding has been required.
The success of Braves and Stuff blog is due to three very unique advantages:
First and foremost: Our hostess, the esteemed Carolina Lady. She has taken on all of the setup and management onto her capable and tireless shoulders. She serves as a host, greeter, gatekeeper and sanity monitor. She’s created and managed the site; loaded candid photos, helped with avatars, added links and has influenced and inspired all of us with her kind spirit and graciousness. It may be a labor of love for her, but it’s labor. We love her and thank her for it.
Secondly: Braves and Stuff was created as a respectable alternative to most other sports blogs. Our respectable neighborhood has had it’s less than pleasurable moments and a few times ‘words’ have gone back and forth, but the brief and comparatively mild unpleasantness is the rare exception. Even a peaceable kingdom has its moments. It’s Stuffville, not Pollyannaville after all. It works.
Last but not least: The third unique advantage is you. All of you make this blog the most interesting and enjoyable place in the universe of blogs that I’ve had the pleasure of visiting, period. Pound for pound, the intelligence and down to earth good nature here will stack up against any blog anywhere, any time.
We’ve seen not only good off-season baseball talk but a regular supply of original thinking, thoughtful opines, poetry, music, naturally good humor, jokes, hilarious repartee, friendly denizen to denizen advice on matters of health and well-being, food talk, condolences and prayers, good wishes, good vibes and good karma sent toward one another.
Now that the Braves are taking the field and our favorite ‘reality show’ is back most every day for 162 games through September and well into October hopefully, there will be a bit of a blog topic shift – from talking mostly stuff to talking Braves baseball and stuff – as our team takes the field, capturing our attention and inspiring our posts.
During this Braves Nation journey to post-season, I’ll remind myself often to remember… particularly on those inevitable days when we get beat up, when we lose a close one, when our batters don’t get the clutch hit or when our pitchers falter… that it’s not only the October destination that is most critical. Even on those nights when I’m barking orders to the players or Bobby Cox through my TV or radio, I’ll enjoy the journey itself. That, and I’ll continue to enjoy all the good Braves and Stuff folks along the way.
Congratulations, Carolina Lady and good denizens of Braves and Stuff! Now, let’s watch Braves baseball and swing away. Just remember…
especially in Stuffville and on the blogosphere.

Just a friendly invite but I am by no means intending to compete with this incredible blog you’ve got here.
Savannah Guy,
I LOVE the post today. It’s got me pumped and more than anything so appreciative to see such a thriving environment to for Braves fans to come and interact.
Y’all have something so unique and very special here and I’ve truly truly enjoyed my little bit of time I’ve shared here at Braves and Stuff.
I’m intending to do my best to keep stopping by this lovely slice of Braves Nation (and piece of heaven) throughout our 162 game marathon. I hope y’all enjoy tonight’s game. Fortunately no one will miss it due to out of market b/c it’s on ESPN!
I can’t wait to see the new park too and I heard a passing rumor there would be new Braves uni’s tonight. Don’t know if that’s true but I thought I’d keep the rumor mill turning.
Lots of love from ATL, y’all!

Hope you guys also picked up that the very end of the lead was a pretty funny link. Well, not funny as in ha ha but, funny, like ahh. Nostalgic ahh.
Seems like winter has returned to Savannah. It’s been grey, overcast sky, windy, cold all day… a perfect day for falling asleep on the couch after lunch while watching Godfather I and II for the umpteenth time. No better sleep than couch, TV and chilly weather.
NOAA forecast for Washington, DC tonight: 30% chance of rain, low of 37 degrees. Won’t be that cold at game time but still… stretch those bodies before taking the field tonight, Braves.

Greetings good denizens… 🙂 Yes, great lead blog by the distinguished gentleman from Savanna. No rain out tonight but it is not a typical spring evening by which most fans would enjoy watching America’s pastime.
On the question about Bennett. I witnessed him pitching twice last season here in Richmond. The first was as a reliever and honestly, he look like a guy who had been on the DL for a while. The second was the stellar performance as a starter in the final playoff game for the IL championship. I thought to myself, wow, where has the Braves been hiding this guy? Just outstanding control and nice zip on his fastball. It seems he has only become better pitching in winter ball. No kidding, this guy will win some ballgames if he is given the opportunity.
Right now I think he is a better number 3 guy than most teams have on their staff. He would be a number one for Washington….
So, only an hour to game time and the real season begins. GO BRAVES…

Tomorrow morning, when I open my newspaper’s sports section, it better be the ONLY day that we’re in LAST friggin’ place in the NL East this year.
I wanted to say this earlier, but didn’t. It’s been bothering me all night. This is NOT a political statement, by the way. When the leader of the free world stepped out of the Nats dugout there were some cheers, but I perceived more boo’s. I don’t care what you think of what he has done as the president of these United States. I don’t care if you don’t like his policies, his accent , or his haircut. He is the president of the UNITED states, like it or not, and booing him, or any other individual that ever held/holds that office is offensive.
My father, an Army veteran, disliked several of his commanding officers. But in his words (a military saying, no doubt): “Respect the office, not the man”.
(Stepping off soap box).
One aspect of our current president that I particularly appreciate: he has a terrific sense of humor about himself. Others should take notice.

Funny you should mention the boos Chris… My wife and I felt the same way, total disrespect. The amazing thing is that in no other country of the world would that be possible. It is at once both what is good and what is bad with America. Perhaps some day our country will reach a level of maturity to understand that simply because you can do something, does not mean you should.
Now baseball…. I am pretty confident the Braves will put some runs on the board this year. I just hope that the Nationals play as hard against the rest of the league as they do the Braves.
That 14 foot wall in right field robbed the Braves of two home runs tonight.

The bad news: It was the fundamentals that beat us. Base running. Errant throws. For the most part, our lumber was handled like yellow pine 2×4’s (which kept Gil up all night). The fans in Washington were just plain rude to the President… like the Senate. Team should go back to Senators name so we could know what to expect… nothing but bad behavior.
The good news: Huddy looked great. If he continues like that he’ll win 20. Chipper keeps on doing his HOF thing. Yunel may not be Jeter but he looks good, real good. Everybody looked pretty good. Frenchy not so much.
In other news: (the excuse department) It was cold and away from home. A bit of ESPN stage fright. ESPN jinxed Braves by actually praising them repeatedly. New, foreign stadium. The broken bat Nat hits were flukes that made the difference. The moon was… uh, that’s enough.
There. I feel better now.

Do Marlins need $3M babysitter?
Posted: Monday March 31, 2008 07:53AM ET
You know why Luis Gonzalez, 40 years old, might make as much as $3 million for this cheap team this season — more than anyone on the roster? Because the Marlins, deemed unprofessional last season even by closer Kevin Gregg, believed they needed the world’s most expensive baby sitter. It isn’t every day that a pro franchise is so immature that everyone in the league is whispering about it even before one of its pitchers gets Tasered. Gone is the actual candy store Dontrelle Willis opened in this clubhouse, right near where Gonzalez now prepares for a 19th season of work as a professional’s professional.

It is going to rain here for the next couple of days. The rain Carolina Lady is getting right now is headed north plus rain coming out of the west.

your comments about Bush being booed, I couldn’t agree more. You don’t have to agree with someone and all their politics to respect the office they hold and the representation they have on a daily basis of our country. It’s tough job and any of us would acquire enemies in that duty. He’s a an imperfect human being doing what he believes is right. Pardon my rant but I, like others here, do not like to see our President booed. I feel like it’s a dishonor to our country. and I’m not saying that because it’s Bush and I’m an avid supporter I would feel this way for any president.
and with that, I too will step away from my soapbox, but you inspired me to chime in, Chris. Nice comment and thank you to your father for serving our country faithfully.

Figure I best check in and let everybody know the group is alive and well after the get-together for the season opener last night. A good time indeed was had by all (especially me, as I enjoyed copious amounts of sweet tea and water … seriously, no booze for me).
Now, last night (noted transition by the Scribe): Tough loss last night. Didn’t run the bases very well at all. One bad inning from Huddy; one bad pitch from Moylan. It happens. Braves’ bats won’t be held to two runs very often, and I’ll take two runs in seven innings from Hudson all season long. All in all, good to see a game that actually counts, even if the Bravos lost …
Now, tonight (noted transition by the Scribe): It’s gonna be cold here in the A, so bundle ’em up if you’re going. Way I see it, it’s good training for bundling up for October night games at Turner Field. CAN’T WAIT to get to the yard later this afternoon!!
Time to get that first win but first … fish to fry.

I have to say that this team has been committing errors like crazy all spring. I went back and looked at some of the box scores from ST. Seems like every game there was at least one and more often than not, there were two and even three per game.

The last two nights have been a horror show but I’m trying to enjoy the season this season no matter what the results are. I have not been pleased at all with the pen and their 10.32 ERA thus far. KJ’s defense has bothered me. Chipper and Escobar are still messing up defensively like they did in the spring. Frenchy has annoyed me defensively thus far. But Hudson looked great on Sunday night, the offense looked good last night, Glavine was good and was exactly what I expect out of him this year. 5, 6 innings and keep his team in the game. Escobar wowed me last night. The Yunel Cartel thing was kinda cool. But I imagine that won’t last for long. The p.c. folks are gonna point out that it is racially insensitive and the Yunel Cartel thing will be nevermore.
With this lineup and rotation, they are gonna be good. The difference between 85 wins and 95 wins to me is gonna be the bench and pen.

Grinch, I think I just passed you as I was coming back from the gym. Be careful, there’s lots and lots of spandex in there. Don’t fall off the treadmill looking.
Just dropped in to say hello, good morning, good afternoon, good evening and goodnight. Headed to Atlanta for all work and no play for a few. If the hotel net works and if I have anything but mush for a brain and if you are lucky I’ll see you guys at games endish or afterish. That’s a definite maybe.
Hope the boys in navy blue have a much-needed huddle today. One of those, “spring training is over and we’re not going to take this… we…will…execute… the… damn… fundamentals”, kind of animated clubhouse chitchat before the game starts tonight. Patience at the plate. Work the pitcher. Bunt. Steal. Throw accurately to first. Dig errant throws out of the dirt. Stuff like that. Most of all… pay attention. Patience… focus… execute… think. Anyhoo, that’s my advice. Put that with $4.00 and it’ll buy you a skinny latte grande.
It’s road warrior time. I’ll put on some traveling music and hit the highway.

Unfortunately, Paladin, I hated Civil Procedure with a passion in law school. It’s alot more fun when you are practicing it because it makes more sense when you are doing it hands on and trying to figure out ways to manipulate the procedural rules to do what you want with them. But it still sucks and studying that crap in law school was friggin’ brutal. I like the substantive parts of the law much more than the procedural aspects atlhough the best way to win is often on technicalities. I’m much more of a matter over form guy but too many in this profession love form over matter.
I hated that Socratic crap in law school that doesn’t help anyone learn a darn thing. How does it help to spend the entire 50 minute class hearing other people giving the wrong answer and never learning what the right answer is? You would probably be a great editor. You know how to cut the fat out and get to the heart of the matter. Not me. I take you around the world in 80 days but never quite end up where I am supposed to be. The best way to learn Civil Procedure is to bite the bullet and go pay the $2500 for the BARBRI and PMBR bar review classes. Especially make sure you get the tapes. I learned more in my six weeks of BARBRI bar review classes after law school than I ever did in my 3 years of law school. If I could do law school all over again, I would have bought the books and tapes before I went to law school

Now, here is one more. First of all, topicality. He is from Atlanta. And we he performed this, he was in his 60s. Those of you who have reached that “milestone” can appreciate what he can still do with those fingers. You young ‘uns, remember, when it’s your time.

This is a great explanation of the tax rebate program recently enacted by Congress. If you don’t understand how it will work maybe this explanation will help:
50,000 people bought tickets to a baseball game, but the game was rained out. A refund was then due to the ticket holders.
The team was about to mail refunds when a group of Congressional Democrats stopped them and suggested that they send out the ticket refunds based on the Democrat National Committee’s interpretation of fairness.
Originally the refunds were to be paid based on the price each person had paid for the tickets. Unfortunately that meant most of th e refund money would be going to the ticket holders that had purchased the most expensive tickets. This, according to the DNC, is considered totally unfair. A decision was then made to pay out the refunds in this manner:
People in the $10 seats will get back $15. After all, they have less money to spend on tickets to begin with. Call it an ‘Earned Income Ticket Credit.’ Persons ‘earn’ it by having few skills, poor work habits, and low ambition, thus keeping them at entry-level wages.
People in the $25 seats will get back $25, because it ‘seems fair.’
People in the $50 seats will get back $1, because they already make a lot of money and don’t need a refund. After all, if they can afford a $50 ticket, they must not be paying enough taxes.
People in the $75 luxury box seats will each have to pay an additional $25 because it’s the ‘right thing to do’.
People walking past the stadium that couldn’t afford to buy a ticket for the game each will get a $10 refund, even though they didn’t pay anything for the tickets. They need the most help. They are either lazy or think that society owes them for just being born. Sometimes this is known as Affirmative Action.
Now do you understand?
If not, contact Representative Nancy Pelosi, Senator Ted Kennedy or Senator Hillary Clinton or Barak Obama for assistance.

Top of the morning, good people. Yes, the sun is out along the southern rim of the capital city. Let’s just say I for one am glad March is behind us now …
Bravos didn’t look good in the field last night or in the bullpen. But I’m encouraged about the two comebacks. Got to watch both of them on TV; my little guys were wiped out by the seventh inning, so we cruised to the house. It was entertaining, for sure.
GREAT to be back in the yard last night. Lotta fun, despite the errors and the bullpen blowing up. As I wrote on http://www.bigleagueblog.net a while ago, it’s a long, long season, so everybody just relax. Things will be fine, good denizens.
And with that, I must run to fry more fish. Busy week down here, but that’s a good thing, indeed. Hope all is well; try to jump back on board later on.
For now, the Scribe abides.

Does “is” go with group, which would make it correct. Or does is go with suspects that would require “are”? When in doubt: is/are

Hey everybody, on this off day for the Braves — a much-needed off day, one would think. Hopefully the team can shake off these first two games and hit the reset button as we get ready to start it again tomorrow night at Turner Field.
Maybe that’s where everybody is at today on the Esteemed Braves And Stuff, taking a break from the furious pace of blogging we’re having here. I mean furious in a good way. It’s nice to come back in here after going to the game (as we did last night) and see the comments, the ebb and flow of emotion, to see in everybody’s words the hope, frustration and sheer emotion we experienced at Turner Field. It’s clear we love this team, without a doubt. I believe we’ll start seeing better results on the field; this team is too good not to perform better.
CL: Thanks for the spot in the blogroll! Greatly appreciated. I don’t like to do the whole self-promotion thing, but I did post my link this morning because I felt it was relevant to the discussion and the mood of Braves Nation following the two losses. If I stepped across a line there, please accept my sincerest apologizes!
And now, a final fish to fry before getting ready for T-ball practice. And what’s up with this weather? It’s nearly 80 degrees here! At least it’ll be nice chasing line drives and ground balls — and little tykes — across the diamond later this afternoon.
Selah, good folks!

Paladin: “Is” is the correct usage there, as suspects is the object of the preposition. Group is your subject, and group is singular, so “is” is the correct verb form.
Sorry, couldn’t help but answer your question as I get ready to jet from here. When in doubt, is/are works just fine in this space, methinks. It’s a blog, after all, and no grammar or spelling police reside here 🙂 … just good people, Braves, and Stuff.

Here is something that, to me, is as scary as anything Stephen King could write.
WAYCROSS, Ga. (AP) – Police say a group of third-graders plotted to attack their teacher, bringing a broken steak knife, handcuffs, duct tape and other items for the job and assigning children tasks including covering the windows and cleaning up afterward.
The plot by as many as nine boys and girls at Center Elementary School in south Georgia was a serious threat, Waycross Police Chief Tony Tanner said Tuesday.
“We did not hear anybody say they intended to kill her, but could they have accidentally killed her? Absolutely,” Tanner said. “We feel like if they weren’t interrupted, there would have been an attempt. Would they have been successful? We don’t know.”
The children, ages 8 and 9, were apparently mad at the teacher because she had scolded one of them for standing on a chair, Tanner said.
They could be expelled, but a prosecutor said they are too young to be charged with a crime under Georgia law.
