PALMETTO, GA -Having just gone through a bunch of nonsense, I’m having a difficult time getting into the mindset of telling a story, so with your permission I’ll just rant on the state of things and what might be done about it.

Let me start off by saying that I am not a fair-weather fan. I spent the 1980’s dragging coolers full of alcohol and food down to Fulton County Stadium to watch both the Braves AND the Falcons. If y’all remember how putrid both teams were during the ’82 to ’91 period, you’ll admit that this isn’t something a non-fan would do. While I wish the Braves would go back to the old stadium rules regarding coolers so that it didn’t cost me $150 to go to a game, they’ve at least put a better product on the field to partially make up for it.

However, here’s the problem I have with both the way the organization’s being run and the people they’re marketing it to: “better than it was” seems to be all anybody’s aiming for as well as all the fans need to be pacified. What’s missing? We have a great scouting department, a great farm system (the envy of most other teams), a large payroll, a large market that provides good revenue, a shrewd GM, a Hall of Fame Manager and a solid collection of veteran superstars, up and coming superstars, and solid role players. So, what’s the problem?

The problem is that this team should be ten games ahead in the division by now, even with all the injuries. The fact that they’re just tripping and stumbling along nonchalantly in third place like a Harley with a bad spark plug should be a major cause of concern for everyone. However, it isn’t for some reason. Sure, we get frustrated. Sure, we come up with ideas about what would help. Sure we keep the fires of hope burning that things will pick up and be all right. “Smoltz’s gonna come back and close,” we say. “Gonzo and Soriano are gonna shore up the bullpen and give others a rest.” “Chuck’s gone.” “We’ll pick up Maddux at the deadline and it’ll be just like old times again.” And a partridge in a pear tree.

The fascination with old times and memories are exactly what the problem is. It wouldn’t matter WHO we had on the team right now. The Braves are coasting, and getting by with it on the reputation of past laurels. Atlanta is the only major city I can think of that is so “neuvaux riche” that both the people and the baseball team can only think back a few years to capture their “tradition.” Look at the Yankees. We were essentially tied with them as the best team of the 90’s. Since then, neither team has done squat (though we’ve done less than them). The difference is the Yankees won’t continue to put up with being mediocre or even pretty good. That’s not the way they do things there. The organization won’t allow it because the fans and the media won’t allow it. They demand better, and better they will get or at least a damn solid visible effort at it. The fans and media know what good baseball is, and won’t accept less.

Atlanta doesn’t demand anything of anybody; as long as we’re at or above .500 and Bobby says “Aw, shucks” when interviewed, the businessmen in their Izod’s and loafers with no socks and silicone enhanced wives will continue to make deals on the cellphone at the park instead of watch the game and pay attention. If everyone else thinks its ok, they will too. I GUARANTEE you if the AJC would start doing its job (and we could force that by booing them; let ‘em know we can dang sure get another paper or two started here…they don’t have a monopoly) and Schultz and Bradley started ripping the Braves like they do the Hawks things would turn around quick. Imagine if there were two or three major papers and ALL of them were doing that. Creative Loafing, too. And blogs everywhere. And the evening news. Jerome Jurenovitch (?). Y’all, I love Brian Jordan but they have him on there for a reason; he doesn’t make waves. That must stop. The people would catch on that we don’t have to put up with all this failed planning, poor managing, poor effort, poor excecution, etc. When Bobby does something stupid, write about it. Talk about it. Yell about it. Boo at the stadium like other teams do. Boo bad bunt attempts. Boo rally-killing double plays. Boo ignorant lefty-righty bullpen moves. Boo Tex for talking like Boras and playing like Andruw. Other cities would. Boo poor effort. Make the Braves from the President on down to the bat-boys understand that we know what the heck is going on and we won’t put up with it. That if players are underperforming we want them benched or traded, or we’ll make a scene. That if Terry can’t help any of the hitters with fundamentals, we want someone who can. Boo them. Talk about it. Get the media going. If Bobby can’t motivate players anymore, promote him up or talk him into retiring. If you don’t, we’ll make a scene. Booooo! That’s the way others do it, and that’s why they’re “Baseball Towns” and we’re not. That’s why their teams may not always win, but they always look like they’re giving maximum effort.

People, the people who run this team are only there because we pay for it and support it. This team with its payroll just like it is now could be up there competing with the Yankees and the Red Sox every year. WE NEED TO BE TIRED OF PAYING NEW YORK CITY PRICES AND RECEIVING LAZY REDNECK RESULTS IN RETURN.

LET’S MAKE THIS A BASEBALL TOWN. POWER TO THE PEOPLE.

How many one run losses… nevermind. I don’t even wanna know.

Somewhere, somehow, some metric sabbermatricianistic pytha-plastic pen protector in front pocket stat nerd HAS to be able to make sense out of this underperforming year. Here’s a quick theory: With as many one run losses as we’ve had, Lady Luck is sitting back saying, “hey, don’t blame me… it’s manager issues”.

No, that Lady Luck will make you cry sometimes but she can’t possibly be responsible for this string of debacles. Yes, players have to perform, but the players need a fire under their collective arsses. Who would be that person? Cox. We have a country club, not a never say die ball club.

OK, I’ll quit ranting now and get back to finish reading Grinch’s rant.

OK, Grinch… that was a fine lead sir. Yepper… damn fine. I whole heartedly agree on almost all of it, with the only exceptions being some minor details. No, not spelling… didn’t notice any probs there.

Here’s one diff: I think Brian Jordan is one of the few… no, make that the only Braves affiliated announcers that gets it right. Yes, he bites his lip on occasion but on numerous reports he’s called BS just what it was, but he did it in a nice way. How can he be overly critical? He’s a player. I know, I know, where’s the truth… but he does a decent job in my opinion. I’ve seen him do it too many times when ALL other anncrs were dribbling PR nonsense.

The other thing: One ‘problem’ the Braves franchise has that would not have been allowed under a Turner leadership model… nice is nice but winning is everything. Braves suffer from nice… which is nice, but it ain’t winning. We’ve become a ‘good ol’ boy’ country club. TP… GOB… Cox, GOB, JS…GOB, Liberty… money counters. Therein lies the problem. If you think the Yanks have the mercenary attitude it take, just check out the transition between George the winning tyrant and his son, the losing not-really-chip-off-the-old-block.

Did I say great post? It was. Thing is, AJC could care less whether Braves had a winning team or not. Not at all. Makes no diff to them at all. They sell ads and regurgitate NY Times, LA Times and network news propaganda. They do provide enough content to wrap an entire school of fish on Sunday though, so I guess that accounts for some redeeming quality.

So, we agree… power to the people… my rant is now complete.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Jordan. And you’re right; he doesn’t lie. But I’m just saying he doesn’t exactly lend a sense of urgency to anything; his demeanor is so quiet that when it’s the only dissenting voice it tends to get drowned out.

FBG, if Grinch was psychic, he would not be surprised at the last part of that particular word… psy’chic’. Where do you think that word originated anyway? It sure wasn’t that little square chewing gum. No, chiclettes were always at the core of his troubles. Or was that coke? Whatever. Anyhoo, it’s all about the chics.

OK, so Freud was a bad speller… he meant chick. So who’s gonna fuss over the minor details? He was onto something there.

Hey, here’s an idea if you truly want results with the Braves: tell players wives to start coming to the games like they used to, instead of staying at home counting the cars and giving directions to servants. Yepper, get’em right there at the games in the front rows where Paladin’s girlfriend Jane Fonda used to sit. Let them give their hubby’s the ‘eye’ if they don’t perform and throw kisses when they do.

This could work. Women rule the world. Why not a baseball game?

Grinch, excellent blog raising some very compelling points. Here’s a question for you or anyone else. I do not live in ATL or even spend much time there. Wikipedia shows that as of 2007 there were approximately 5.34 million residents of the metro Atlanta area. That is a huge increase over the numbers from 1990 where there were 2.9m residents. Does it not make sense then that many/most of the increase in population are people from other cities that are not loyal to the Braves and really could care less if they play well or not? I’ve heard that some visiting teams often have thousands of fans at the Ted, particularly the Mets and Red Sox. These outsiders are in the Atlanta market are NOT going to make the ajc, any other news outlet or the Braves become accountable because they don’t care.

That still does not excuse the native Atlantan, the media or the club. You certainly raise good points. Perhaps the feeling amongst these groups is that they are doing the best they can with what little they have (payroll-wise) to work with.

I missed the game tonight. Went to the RiverDogs with my son and just got home in time to see the very last pitch. Reading through the in game blog I got a little feel for what happened. Would the “real” Tim Hudson, please stand up?

This is something that has bothered me for a very long time. I’ll assume that everyone here understands the laws of supply and demand. Why don’t the owners of sports teams?

So far through 19 home games (not including Saturday’s game) the Braves have averaged 30k per game. Unfortunately, the Ted has seats for a little over 50k. That means that on average there are approximately 20k empty seats per game and over the course of the season (81 home games) there will 1.62m empty seats!

What does this mean? It means that the market is telling the Braves that their tickets are too expensive!

Could you imagine what might happen with Braves payroll if they could sell out the stadium regularly? Could you imagine what would happen if all those people bought beer and hotdogs? How about hats, jerseys, etc?

I know that this is a very simplistic view, yet I wonder why it is not considered.

An interesting advantage is that the birds also love bugs. I haven’t put any chemical pesticides in my yard in years because the birds and lizards take care of them all.

That cat must not have shown aggressive behavior towards the birds. I’ve seen situations where an aggressive cat shows up and every bird around screams at the top of its lungs.

My grandmother adopted about a zillion cats in her lifetime. One particular cat, who had a very long Polish name (as all of her many animals had Polish names) was a big time hunter. Whenever he came out of the house every bird (especially the mockingbirds) raised holy hell. He could just go lie on the driveway in the sun and the mockingbirds would dive bomb him and try to attack him.

Great lead Grinch, I echo your sentiments on uninspired play. I have said this before that maybe the professional approach is not the best way for players too young to understand the concept.

Occasionally ripping up the club house or throwing a few bats on the field is needed to remind folks you still care.

Overnights, overalls, and overhauls: I awake this morning to see that even after I went to bed, SG and Grinch still didn’t have a clue about a certain thread of what was said. Now, SG and Grinch not having a clue is not a scoop, but I will still try to right this particular ship. Listen closely children and you can take notes so sharpen your crayons.

SG, said something about where were all the denizens. I then said, “They will be back Monday, unfortunately”. That is satire or sarcasm and don’t worry about that now. We will be taking that up in about 8 years and after your successful completion of 2 levels of education.

SG responds to that with “???”. Now, that might be an effective means of communication…among idiots, but the rest of us use words. Following that, however, everything went off the deep end. I tried my best to get something across but it was like trying to communicate with two stumps without benefit of a log-splitter.

Then, I go to bed and they start their “cute” comparisons of me and Bob. What a low blow. Just let me tell you this, Buster Brown(Grinch), you start making comparisons of me and Bob and I will make the obvious comparison of you and Coach. I have already made the comparison of SG and Quack Quack( Duck 1 – SG 0), but it can be expanded.

    Blog Backtrack and Cleanup Notification:

Well, it’s so slow around here I’ve resorted to rereading old posts. Good thing… found a few that require clarification. So, to keep myself out of the doghouse and to keep the guys in the little white suits from visiting, I’ll revisit a coupl’a posts last night. Yikes.

Note to self: next time I’m out all day doing physical labor then come in, thirsty, adrenaline still pumping, then plop right down to watch a game, slam a few brewskies and do a little friendly bloggin’ with Stuffville buds… I will read my posts before hitting the ‘submit comment’ button. That, plus I’ll try not getting so caught up head twirlin’ back and forth between game and writing. 😳

Grinch… as far as the Braves go, I think we were pretty much in the same mindset last night (and the last few years). Anyhoo, in my 10:40, I was referring to Freud and coke, not you. Maybe you didn’t catch that but it could have been taken either way. You don’t seem like a coke guy at all. Well, maybe Dr. Pepper or the cola kind, not the Peruvian type.

Klobber… all I can say is, I have no idea why I asked if you were moving to Georgia. Guess I was jus busy chatting with FBG, thinking about her GA situation and, dunno… misread then misspoke. Anyway, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. But if you do move to Georgia, hopefully it’ll be Savannah. Maybe setup the Klobber Saloon down this way. We need a good ‘Cheers’ type baseball saloon here.

Paladin… ok, so I got carried away with the Jane Fonda thing and the ju jitsu stuff. Sorry. Klobber was right, you could give me a black eye… that is, if you snuck into my dayroom and rubbed charcoal on the eyepiece of my telescope. Just saw the ‘splainin’ of your nonsensical posts. OK, I’ll buy that. Thought for a minute there may have been an Indian Chief and a pillow involved? Now, this morning you’re saying something about quack 1-me 0. What in Sam Hill does that mean? While you’re at it, where and what is Sam Hill anyway? If it’s a Civil War thing, you could help, since you’re the only one of us that was around then. 😉

Gil, just read your last. You’re right about possessions. We lost almost all of ours in a flash, about 15 years ago when our last home flooded. Fortunately our family photographs were stored high and were spared. Some were submerged but we carefully washed them and dried them and they were not damaged. Almost everything else was destroyed. The only stuff we lost that I still miss is my old, very large and irreplaceable record album collection. All ruined. Had some rare ones. Then again, they’d probably just be stored somewhere out of sight along with my turntable, amp, hoola-hoops and lava lamps.

As for the Braves… too little too late last night and their overall play lately, it’s settled then… the arrgghhhs have it.

I had no idea of the fire and some of your other stuff. That’s quite a bit of trials and tribulations for anyone. You are a walking testament to overcoming hardship and maintaining a beautiful spirit. May the rest of your days, starting today, be blessed with everything good. You deserve the best.

So, we have an SG flood, a CL fire and a Gil auction. I’ll take auction. 😀

New York. These are trying times for slugger Jason Giambi. Even his lucky underwear can not help his UNDERSIZED batting average.

The above is the lead sentence to the article(the caps are mine). It has to do with Giambi telling the New York press(of all people)that he is wearing a gold thong under his uniform in an attempt to improve his performance. Getting back to the word I captilalized: I don’t think I would want that word and my underwear et al associated.

Well-spoken lead. I’d like Jordan to be a bit more blunt…I think Joe tries; Gant has been particularly tough at times…which is nice to hear.

Fact is, for all their professionalism, the Braves spend too much time thinking about what they have coming to the team ‘tomorrow’, oblivious to the fact they’re quickly becoming ‘yesterdays’.

Mark Bradley has written two columns in a row on baseball. And in so doing, he has demonstrated why he shouldn’t bother. In the first he picked on Andruw. Does he realize that AJ is gone? Now, he writes how Devine was “rushed” and that Morton hasn’t been. Excuse me! Hasn’t Morton been in the minors for 7 years, or thereabout? I say, and have said, get him up here!

    Grinch, excellent lead!!!!
I think we all worry about being too negative with the team,(as per SG’s posts last night) and in life, it always seems easier to find the negative, than positive in most everything.

But, facts is facts, as they say(They who didn’t get past the 6th grade!)
You are right, this team should be doing at least as well as the Marlins, if not better. Moylan and Soriano haven’t hurt nearly as much as I thought their losses would(But, it’s still early) but, except for Chipper, Yunel, Kotsay, and McCann our offense has been very weak, or at least inconsistent.

Frenchy does get some 2 out hits, but so often he swings at a pitch 3 inches outside on the first pitch! And has been mentioned before, he’s clearly hurting, has no power right now…and is playing every inning. he’ll just work thru it. 🙄

It was a mistake to keep running McCann out there last year when hurt, and it’s a mistake to it with Frenchy.

Yet, as much as Bobby seems to think you can’t possibly rest someone that is clearly hurting enough for it to affect his fielding and hitting, the whole organization seems to have the attitude of…. ” Hey, it’s a long season! We will start rolling one of these days, no sense getting excited.

And as others before me have mentioned, there is little excitement on this team!

CL The Braves – they just aren’t as interesting

Yep! I still get a bit mad thinking about Yunel catching crap for daring to steal a base when the team was up-7,8-0 on the Astros(I think?) You still try to hit when you are way ahead, right??? You can still try to go from 1 to 3 on single, can’t you? Or….God forbid, hit a homer???

The game does change, pitchers don’t knock down guys following homers anymore(Thank God, seems pretty stupid way to get back at someone for besting you)

You are supposed to score as many runs as possible in this game, you tend to win more that way. I don’t care if Yunel does a bat flip every time he hits the ball(though I wait for the day someone on the club says to stop) He plays hard, and plays with excitement! The only other guy that plays that way, right now is Gregor Blanco! They are both hungry now, they know what it’s like to play for years in the minors, they don’t want to go back, they like it here….Tex, even Chipper and Kelly, they just don’t seem hungry. Yeah, I know Chipper is the hottest player on the planet right now, but where is the enthusiasm??? The biggest reaction I have seen in him on the field in years, was McCann’s belly flop. Get excited if/when Tex gets a big hit next time….last year, Tex would look psyched after a homer, and an emotionless Chipper would high five….

Winning can be contagious, and so can energy. I’d gladly take a Shelley Duncan type on the team, or an Eric Burnes, than the staid pros that are on the team now…..Wow…this is way too long, it must be half the length of a typical WW or SG post!

And I had more points to make! 😦

Salty, you’re right about Gant. Meant to mention his last night in reference to ‘telling it like it is’ concerning Braves reportage. He and Brian are obviously not professional TV reporters/announcers, etc. but they… especially Gant, do a good job of calling BS in my opinion. Oh, it’s subtle, but it’s there.

If a reporter is going to lambast the Braves or criticize anyone in the franchise, it obviously needs to be a columnist or sports reporter from an independent news source… someone not currently or previously associated/affiliated with the team. AJC and the Atlanta news media should provide that voice of unbiased reason, but they don’t. The beat writers can’t do it for obvious reasons. So who will?

Fans can attend the games and, what… boo? That won’t help. They can voice opinions on blog forums, but their well founded criticism may be diluted or lost in a sea of immature, vile, idiocy. Fans can write letters to AJC editors or letters to the Atlanta media or letters to Braves management… and then what?

Maybe we could write a slogan or design an audacious (collectable) tee shirt that ‘tells it like it is’, in a few short words that people could wear to games. Maybe rent a plane and fly a message banner over the Ted during games? What would a shirt or banner message be? Hmmm…

Mr. Fly has attempted to provide inside clubhouse reporting, but in terms of readership he’s fallen short. Could be that there are still people out there that don’t believe a fly can talk or that he was in the Telepod and is part human or something. Or maybe it’s because, uh, he is short… dunno.

Salty, you are right, Gant has told it like it is a few times this year….

Back to the other fascinating point I wanted to make….Grinch mentioned how little interest fans show these days….

I wonder how much of it has to do with the years the organization was so very cheap??? I know my interest waned a bit when the worry over money became a big issue. 18 game winner Millwood traded for a minor league catcher??? Because we didn’t want to pay Maddux and Millwood? We were so lucky (Or rather, JS was) that Johnny Estrada had a great year that year. But still, trading an 18 game winner within your division, to save a buck…then raise ticket prices…it can kind of kill the buzz, you know???

And winning every year, no matter what cheap moves were made, didn’t really help inspire love for the team. Truth be told, 3-4 years ago, I was really hoping for a sub .500 team, that the fans wouldn’t pay money to see, so the organization would get the fact people want to see you put the best team you can on the field(Within reason, we can’t be the Yankees or Red Sox)

I know that sounds like a spoiled fan, but when a team acts like they can’t sign Darryl Ward for 1.5 Million or whatever it was(And man could we have used him last year, or what???) at the same time the Red Sox paid 50 Million just for the rights to Dice-K, which team would you expect to have more rabid fans???

New ownership does have a bit looser purse strings, and that is all you can hope for, if a good starter becomes available in July, hopefully we won’t be hearing we can’t afford him, while some other team in the hunt grabs him…

    1. Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

    2. If you had to identify, in one word, the reason why the human race has not achieved, and never will achieve, its full potential, that word would be “meetings.”

    3. There is a very fine line between “hobby” and “mental illness.”

    4. People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them.

    5. You should not confuse your career with your life.

    6. Nobody cares if you can’t dance well. Just get up and dance. (This one is very important)

    7. Never lick a steak knife.

    8. The most destructive force in the universe is gossip.

    9. You will never find anybody who can give you a clear and compelling reason why we observe daylight savings time.

    10. You should never say anything to a woman that even remotely suggests that you think she’s pregnant unless you can see an actual baby emerging from her at that moment.

    11. There comes a time when you should stop expecting other people to make a big deal about your birthday. That time is age 11.

    12. The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we ALL believe that we are above average drivers.

    13. A person, who is nice to you, but rude to a waiter, is not a nice person. (This is very important. Pay attention. It never fails.)

    14. Your friends love you anyway.

    15. Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic.

Bear, good posts this morning… and long. Training for writing a novel? 😉

Thing is, I really don’t worry at all about being negative. Sometimes reality or the truth is not what we’d like and if we comment on it, our sentiment is or can be interpreted as negative. On the other hand, dwelling on things that are negative or obsessing over them is a bad habit. I try to avoid that in my life… of which, baseball is included. Don’t always succeed, but I do try.

That, plus I try to remember (unfortunately not always) that whatever we say in a public forum can be read by anyone in the world, including Braves players, managers and their families. So, yes… I’ll criticize with the best of ’em but I do make a conscious effort to not make it personal or hurtful.

Other than that, Tex is playing like he’s on a halfhearted spring warmup, training for his postseason contract negotiations. His mind is too cluttered with expectations and next year’s signing bonanza that he’s forgotten how to hit. Kelly is playing like a guy that should be on another team at first base. Cox is managing like a guy that has Maddux, Smoltz and Glavine, in their prime… where game strategy is not all that important. Frenchy is playing like he has no self awareness. Braves coaches are enjoying watching games and getting paid well to be spectators.

Oh, but Jair, Chipper, Yunel ad Kotsay are doing great. See, I can be positive.

Just so there is no misunderstanding… The auction about which I referred was someone else’s estate, not mine. The point I was trying to make is folks often put too much stock in material things and forget the most important things in life like family, spirituality and making a positive impact on those around you.

All of us have many life experiences, some good and others not so good. The important thing is to come out of those with a positive attitude and the realization that things could be worse. Feeling sorry for one’s self never really had much impact for a positive outcome.

Now, I am just glad we all have survived some pretty devastating things in our lives but have the good fortune and blessed spirits to come together at this meeting place to discuss stuff as well as baseball.

Okay, enough preaching to the choir for one night… Great win for the Braves today, especially following the debacle Hudson was involved with yesterday.

Anyone see the front page of Drudge???? There’s a photo of Obama speaking to a crowd the size of the Pope’s!!!!

I really like this part of his speech, it reminds me of those glory days of Carter with government office buildings forced to have the “heat” set at 68 in the winter, and 78 in the summer….ah, good days!

He also attacked McCain’s plan for a gas tax holiday to cope with rising pump prices, which Clinton supports, as well as his other environmental plans, saying the Republican had consistently opposed fuel efficiency standards.

“For him to come to Oregon as an environmental president, but his big strategy is to do more drilling and to have a gas tax holiday for three months, that’s a phony solution,” he said.

Pitching his message to Oregon’s environmentally-conscious voters, Obama called on the United States to “lead by example” on global warming, and develop new technologies at home which could be exported to developing countries.

“We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,” Obama said.

“That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen,” he added.

Don’t get me wrong now, I thought 7-8 years ago when the SUV craze was getting hot, that we were going to pay for it down the road with how much more fuel people were using now that they had gone from Civics to Navigators….and the market is already turning against them, and smaller, more efficient models are selling much better…

But, under Obama, will we be allowed to drive SUV’s(Or will there be a huge tax placed on owning one?) or eat as much as we want,(Sorry sir, you already had one order of fries today) or keep our thermostats at 72????(Do not laugh, they tried and failed iin California earlier this year to mandate thermostats in homes that the state could control) After all, we have to wonder what other countries think of us, above all….

Of course missing in the speech is the fact neither Republicans or Democrats have thought about long term solutions to our energy issues. No new drilling,(ANWR, off the coast of Florida, etc) no new refineries, No nuclear plants(France has them everywhere, so does Japan) No billions into creating Hydrogen powered vehicles…nothing….

    By WAYNE PARRY
WAYNE, N.J. (AP) – She wraps her arms around her son, gently raising the spindly 14-year-old boy off a couch to his feet. She hugs him and rubs his back, whispering “I love you” over and over.

Steven Domalewski moves his head to kiss his mother, but all he can manage are slurping sounds in front of her lips. His head flops onto her shoulder, spent from the effort.

Less than two years ago, Domalewski was a happy, healthy star pitcher on a youth baseball team coached by his father. He loved martial arts, climbed every tree on the block and zoomed down his street on inline skates. He once shot an arrow into the wall of his basement rec room.

Now Domalewski is severely disabled, left with brain damage after being struck in the chest by a line drive that stopped his heart while he was playing in a youth baseball game.

Now, new subject. Can anyone tell me the justification for continuing to use metal bats in youth baseball when they are not used in professional baseball because–mainly–they are DANGEROUS!

Sky man, I of course respect the sacrifices you and others have made for our country, and deserve to be taken care of….but, I also feel people can be hoodwinked into voting for folks that do not have people’s best interest at heart. And you might be paying more taxes somewhere else to make up for doing away with income taxes on senors.

I have all sorts of health issues for a 41 year old. Several bad discs, chronic stomach problems, diabetes, high blood pressure(Wrist still bothers me that I had surgery on 15 years ago, ankle that I had surgery on a decade ago does as well…
I know the Dems are more likely to help me out with the cost health care issues…but, at what cost to my country??? No longer able to see my doctor, just whomever “they” deem the one for me??? Have to wait like they do in Canada (Sometimes for years) for surgery???

Chris, I don’t buy the whole “Atlanta fans are passive because they’re all from New York deal.” Went to a Thrashers playoff game the year before last and the packed house practically shook the arena down. Same for the Hawks in this year’s playoffs. Yeah, there are some transplants, but not five million of them. I don’t care for aluminum bats, but let’s be clear about what happened to this young man. The ball struck his heart at precisely the right moment to induce cardiac arrest. It can happen to any of us, at any time…merely tossing a ball. It can happen in football, basketball…martial arts…and playing catch in the yard.

A child down in, I believe Clayton or Fayette County, south of Atlanta (for you non-ATLers) died a few years ago after being struck. One of the movements afoot, as a result, is to have defib machines at ballparks/stadia/fields. Berigan or Grinch may recall…or ssiscribe, since they’re on the ‘Southern Rim’ of the Capitol City.

    Warning: I feel a sermon coming on…

I’ve just learned that Obama says he will do away with income tax for seniors… In that case, GO OBAMA!… Yes, my vote can be bought just as my 26 years of service was bought. Finally, before you lecture me, tell us about YOUR sacrifices.

Palskyhawkadin, go wash your mouth out with soap… or in this case, scrub those crusty old fingers that typed that. It’s like a black voting for a black just because of race, or vice versa. That’s like any minority or special interest group voting for the politician that promises them what they want, despite what is best for the entire country.

Now, I know you’re just spoofing and don’t really believe that and would never vote for the extreme, radical Obama. But the opportunity was irresistible… just couldn’t help raggin’ on ya.

Oh… my sacrifices: Because of my beliefs, I was pitted against lions and tigers in Roman coliseums. Later, I fought as Hitler’s SS herded my brothers and sisters into the Nazi death camps. I bled on the beaches of Normandy and the islands of the Pacific. I was tortured by Stalin and sent to Siberia. I fought to stop communism from spreading throughout Korea and Vietnam. Now I’m in Afghanistan and Iraq, fighting to keep the mid east from becoming one massive global terror base to gather like a radical Islamic storm and destroy us. As an American and a Christian, I carry the crosses and flags of our fathers. I salute them for fighting and dying for me. Because they were there, I was there.

Paladin, I salute you for your service in Korea and Vietnam… as I salute all of our brave warriors and true believers that have died for their beliefs. I salute all of those that fought in foreign wars and those that are fighting now. I salute and honor those that have fought for justice and freedom throughout history and throughout the world.

I honor those that fought so that Americans could be free and safe from harm, thus giving all of us the opportunity to be more idealistic, be it as liberal, or conservative, whether an Obama, Clinton, McCain or Barr supporter… whether religious, sectarian, grouchy, happy, mean spirited, kind, loving, hating, thoughtful or selfish. We have the choice and we are free to be whomever we want because of those that came, fought and died before us.

We Americans were given the freedom to be anything, to say or think anything and to vote for anyone or anything we believe in, unlike those poor souls in ancient Rome and Egypt, Germany or the Soviet Union, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Syria, North Korea and Tibet… to name a few.

Americans and free citizens all over the world have been given that freedom… bought by the hard work, the monetary investment, courage, sweat and blood of our brave forefathers.

So, thank you Pal for playing a critical and high-risk part in that. As my favorite jet fighter, you can be grouchy any time you want. If my mood is fragile at any given moment (extremely rare if ever), I’ll just close one eye, scroll by or take a deep breath and put it in perspective. Thing is, I’m proud to know you and consider you my pal. Of course, that means I can also still poke you any damn time I want as well. Why? Because I’m free my good man… FREE! 🙂

    Just saw this quote:

“We have become not a melting pot but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different hopes, different dreams.”
    — Jimmy Carter

Right on Jimmy. Trouble is, your ‘pot stirring’ has nothing to do with melting all those folks together. Your domestic stirring polarizes the people with self-interests and your global stirring endangers Jews and Americans and our troops in harms way.

Ever seen ALL the verses to the Star Spangled Banner? Might find them interesting.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

It sure was nice getting to hear Skip Caray call a couple of games this weekend. I like Boog….think he and Joe work well together, but there’s nobody in the business like old Skip. It made me realize how different the “old-timers” called the games.

Now on the topic of dangerous bats….I agree with what Skyhawk and B-7 said about aluminum bats. I also hope we make it through 2008 without someone getting run through by one of these flying javelins called Maple bats in MLB, because I believe they will be outlawed after this season. Folks are starting to take notice, now, and I hope MLB becomes proactive rather than reactive on the issue. What’s it going to take? Don’t answer that.

Question for the day: Should the Braves try Paul Byrd version III ? When Jake Westbrook comes of the DL for Cleveland, which should be soon, their rotation suddenly becomes a little crowded. Byrd is the likely odd man out. He could probably be had for a low level prospect. He can eat innings and be an upgrade from CHuckie. I realize that Campillo is getting a start tomorrow, but he hasn’t started all year and can’t reasonably be expected to give alot of innings consistently. So, whaddaya think?

Yea!!! Discussion! You could be right, Imp, but he won’t be as costly as Joe Nathan or somone of that level. There’s just no way that the Braves are gonna keep getting by with putting a 5th starter together with spit and duct tape. I’d like to see what Campillo can do, but I don’t like the idea of conducting that experiment at the major league level. It will tax an already stratched bullpen. That bullpen, by the way, is the only reason the Braves are still in the same zip code as the Marlins. How long can they hold out with the use they have already incurred?

Today’s three pronged recipe for Braves success the rest of the way:

    1) Tex has to live up to his lofty reputation. I’m tired of waiting for him to “heat up”. His inability to find a stinkin’ calendar that reads past April has gotten on my last nerve. And don’t even get me started on the “he always has a bad April” crap. Play for the whole season, dangit! You’re getting paid for April just like June or July.

    2) 5th starter. ‘Nuff said already.

    3) Gotta get some production out of left field. As much as we’ve all groaned about Frenchy’s shortcomings, LF has been worse. To borrow a stat from across the street, the the combined OPS of Diaz and Blanco is .620. Only the lowly Nats have less production from LF in the NL. Yuck! Heck, bring up Anderson and stick him out there. He’s not gonna do any worse, and the kid’s got wheels. For that matter, play Infante in LF.

    OK, discuss amongst yourselves.

A lot of people set their laptops to hibernate or shut down when they haven’t been used in a fairly short period of time so the battery doesn’t run down.

You can do one thing for sure and possibly another. First, change the setting for how quickly it shuts down.

    1. Go the start button (lower left hand corner) and click it.
    2. Click the Control Panel
    3. Click Appearances and Themes
    4. Click “Choose a Theme”
    5. At the bottom of the box that came up you should see “Monitor Power”. Click the Power button
    6. This will show you what the current settings are for your hard drive and display. Adjust them accordingly.

The second thing you can do is set yourself up as a separate user from your mother. Then everytime you sign on, it acts as a different computer from the current configuration.

All the other players have conceded the contest to Wright. Oh, and the All-Star MVP trophy has already been engraved with his name too.

FBG, you’re right; Campillo is starting the second game.

“Last season, with Triple-A Tacoma, the Mariners’ Minor League affiliate, Campillo went 9-6 with a 3.07 ERA in 22 starts, becoming the first Tacoma pitcher since 2001 to lead the league in ERA.

Campillo’s only other experience as a starter came when he played in the Mexican League. He made 85 starts from 1997-2004 with Mexico City.”

Well, maybe we can 2 out of 3……

CL, I have lived in Charleston for nearly forty years. When we first moved here, it was a very small town. Most of the folks here had been here for generations. You could walk down King Street (one of the main streets in downtown) and everyone you passed would look you in the eye and say hello. It didn’t matter your race, sex, appearance, whatever.

I moved to Florida after I lost my job and apartment in Hurricane Hugo in 1989. I was appalled the first time I went out and greeted a stranger on the street and was totally ignored. After less than two years, I moved home and realized that everything had changed here. “People from off” had moved in seemingly by the zillions. They did not know of how polite and gentile our fair city was and so they did not reciprocate the grace bestowed upon them. Nearly twenty years later, it’s gotten worse, much worse. It is very, very sad.

By the way, I now know more people from Ohio, West Virginia, New York and Michigan than I know local folks. In fact, when I tell people how long I’ve been here they are invariably surprised.

That’s what happened in Florida too. Bradenton was a smallish town when I was a kid & the natives were still Southern. Now it’s a million subdivisions & everyone is from somewhere else (where they are obviously not taught manners or basic friendliness).

Morning, all. Just read an article on the AJC about how Oakland players felt about Kotsay; some were interviewed here during this last series. The general consensus is that Kotsay’s main value above and beyond his bat was his fiery clubhouse energy and his habit of running around like a madman, blasting music and doing whatever he could to get teammates fired up before every game. They go on to say “Of course, the Braves clubhouse is more buttoned-down and Cox doesn’t allow music; Kotsay’s still trying to figure out how to get the team fired up here.”

That’s just sad. If there’s one thing this team needs, and I mean above injured players coming back, even; it’s someone to fire them up. You all remember how annoying Robert used to be on the AJC blog because when someone would give a poor effort but it didn’t matter to Bobby because the player didn’t violate his “no sunglasses on the hat” rule? Well, as more time goes by I’m realizing that Robert had it right all along. This is bloody nonsense, and nobody cares for some reason.

BTW, the AJC also printed an article this morning about “Off-duty cop nabs bank robber.” That was my buddy, and I sat in on the preliminary trial. The testimony of the FBI agent who interviewed everyone on the scene completely refutes every aspect of that entire story; if I didn’t think making a stink about it might come back to haunt Tom I’d sue them for false and sensational journalism. This paper has no integrity of any kind.

Grinch, no one ever said Robert was wrong. His mistake was the way that he went about sending his message. Even the most patient person tired of reading the same thing from the same blogger time and time again.

Truth is, Cox has some wonderful qualities. Unfortunately, like the rest of us mortals, he’s got some that aren’t so great too. I’ve often said that Pat Corrales and Leo Mazzonne are missed far more than anyone knows. I think they were largely responsible for helping him make in-game substitutions. Cox has not done a good job managing the bullpen or the bench since those guys have been gone.

Good stuff about Kotsay, good clubhouse guy, etc. That’s what was being reported when we signed him. I wondered at the time what effect that might have on the less than fired up Braves clubhouse. To a guy like Kotsay it must feel like joggin’ through a park, rockin’ out with earplugs and running into the middle of a funeral procession. There needs to be a riot… a sea change… a revolt against ‘business as usual’. Wonder how many players would join in that attitude shift?

Klobber, agree on your 8:02. Seems like as soon as anyone leaves Atlanta they are considered a bum… always was a bum and now a worse bum. Then any value they brought to the team is discounted, parsed and explained away as something other than the contribution of the coach, player, etc.

Wish I could stay for a bit, but duty calls. The whisper is becoming a shout.

Top of the morning, everybody. More radio silence the past few days as I rediscover why golf makes my blood pressure rise, while fishing with my kids makes me happy, and why this baseball team drives me crazy!

Today on http://braves.today.com I issued my quarterly report card. I absolutely agree with Grinch on the points in his post. I’m one of the yellers and clappers and standing-up-with-two-outs fans, and it annoys the heck out of me when somebody tells me to quiet down or sit down.

What? We’re not at the Masters. Go take your quiet time to the library or a tennis match (that’s not a dis at either the library or tennis, mind you).

I’m of the mindset there should be two or three red pennants on that overhang in left field (red for World Series championships, of which, as you know, there’s just one). There should be two or three more NL championship pennants out there (1997, 1998 and 2003 immediately jump to mind). I’ve always been taught you perform to win it all, to be the very best, whether you’re running a small newspaper’s sports department, writing business proposals or playing Major League Baseball. Your goal shouldn’t be to just perform and be happy with finishing with 84 wins. Your goal is to win the World Series, period. That’s why everybody starts the season at 0-0.

With all that said, I think this team is close to taking off. Yes, I know the situational hitting late and close has been abysmal. Yes, I know the impact of the injuries. Yes, I know they haven’t played well on the road (the home/road split continues to mystify me; I do a Braves segment each week on a sports talk station, and every week the host asks me about it and every week I tell him — and whoever is listening to the show — that I can’t explain it, because I can’t figure out why in the world this team plays so well in one spot and so poorly everywhere else).

Where was I? Oh yeah, this team taking off … yes, I know Bobby is still in charge. I only gave him a B- because he FINALLY shook up the order, putting Escobar leadoff (which I said since February is where he should be) and finally is making a few decent moves with the bullpen (I think somebody finally told him you can’t pitch six relievers a night, every single night, and expect to have anybody able to throw 60 feet, 6 inches come August and September). Sometimes, I wonder if those cans of Copenhagen in his office are laced with something that makes him make decisions that just don’t make sense.

I just see the talent this team has, how many of them have not hit, how the back end of the rotation has become a revolving door yet again (although I do have hope for Jo-Jo), and I think in spite of the injuries and Bobby’s reliance on playing every single solitary situation by “the book” (and the fact O’Brien and Bowman, two guys I know and respect, won’t question his questionable moves; it’s one thing to write it on a blog or say it on sports radio, but it’s another thing altogether to ask the question after the game then put the response in your gamer, but that’s another fish to fry altogether), with all that said, it’s my belief this team can and will win this season. Too much talent not to do so.

As I wrote this morning, the next 37 days are going to tell a whole lot: Four with the Mets, three with Philly, four with Florida, four with Zona, three with a red-hot Cincy team up there, three with the Cubs at Wrigley, three at the Angels. The Braves need to get right and start winning, right now. Winning four out of five at home is great, but this team has to get it going when they leave 755 Hank Aaron Boulevard.

Speaking of which, that’s where my oldest and I will be in a couple of hours. Guess I need to get today’s version of the honey-do list finished … man, I’ll be happy when next Tuesday arrives and I’m working again! Off time is great, but there are a few things that haven’t gone according to play that’s caused a bit of stress at the casa … at least the contract is signed! 🙂

CL, I’ll write your lead sometime tomorrow if that’s cool … be a good break between painting and lawn work.

    Enjoy your day.

    The Scribe abides.

Congrats for Jon Lester!!! I used to root much more for the Sox, when they never won anything….now, with an annual budget nearly the same as the Yankees, they aren’t really the underdogs anymore, are they??? But, I can surely root for a guy coming back from Cancer!

Will Reyes and Chucky have the careers Lester and Buchholz will??? 😕

Teams these days PAY when they pick pitchers. Detroit does(Dumbest moves they made during the offseason was trading Jurrjens to us, and Andrew Miller to the Marlins-you tend to want to hold on to hard throwing starting pitchers in their early 20s), so do teams like the Red Sox, Tampa(They do have the “advantage” of having the 1st pick every year-till this one) and Diamondbacks….look at their rotation! They just brought up their #1 draft pick(Max Scherzer) from 2006 a little while ago, and after 4 starts, has a 2.33 ERA. On top of the home grown talent of Brandon Webb, Doug Davis, and Micah Owings(Though he’d be a starting left fielder, if I was his manager!) So…that’s 4 home grown starters…that leaves who else?? Oh yeah, they traded for Dan Haren, and have some other guy, a tall guy…just pitched 7 innings his last start…oh yeah, Randy Johnson! Not bad.

Where would we be without other teams pitchers like Hudson and Jurrjens???

Scribe, you respect O’Brien and Bowman? Why?

The impossibility of berigan, you wonder if Jo-Jo and Chuckie will have the same type of careers as Lester and Bucholtz? I thought you said you didn’t smoke the funny stuff? Lester and Bucholtz have both thrown no-hitters before the age of 23 in the bigs, mainly due to being enormous talents who have their heads together. Jo-Jo is a slightly above average talent who’s starting to get his act together finally; if we’re lucky he’ll be a #3 someday fairly soon. Chuck is a 26 year old who’s proven he belongs in the Mexican league because he only has two very hittable pitches and can’t/won’t develop a third or even pay attention to who he’s pitching to. The only thing he has a chance of having in common with Lester is if he keeps dipping Copenhagen he might get cancer.

    Off to the gym.

The LineUp Card. At the end of each blog lead is a list of all our pages, including the LineUp Card. This is the list we mostly-sorta-kinda go by. Sometimes somebody gets swamped by some paltry obligation like “work” or something and we have to wake up the next person to pinch hit in his place. It mostly goes in rotation. I usually try to post in the comments the next 3 or 4 people in the rotation as kind of a ‘heads up’ that their turns are coming up.

Paladin is on R&R so it goes back to the top of the rotation and starts over again.

I agree: we absolutely have the best bloggers in Blogdom! 😆 Great writers!!

Frenchy is getting the night off? Frenchy is getting the night offffff? Man, that deserves a bold sentence or something. Excellent!

Hey y’all. Catching up on the overdays (word?). How about daytimes? Dayparts? Whatever… great win today, wish I could’a seen Glavine take down the Mutts.

I can add certain words or phrases which it will block, but I have no control over it otherwise.

CL is talking like a sailor now? WordPress will screen words like golly gee, darn and heck? Mercy!

it’s my belief this team can and will win this season. Too much talent not to do so.

Scribe, wish I were as optimistic as you. I’ll hope you’re right and of course I’ll continue rooting for Braves as always… win or lose. You’re right, we are stacked with talent, although we’re stacked with serious injuries to many key pitchers as well. That, and our strategy and in-game moves aren’t stellar at times. So, yes… stacked with talent (relative term). But then, Detroit should run away with the AL Central too, right?

SG, I’ve got several patches of tulips here. I put a couple of them together and blew a little while ago and the petals didn’t even come off; was at least expecting a dandelion effect. Stick to what you do best…being wrong about OTHER things, like politics.

Now Grinch… you can’t give p that easy. Maybe you’re just blowing and no sound is coming out. Or you could just be in the wrong flower patch. You know that politically conservative girls make the best wives and lovers, right? They will make you a wiser man. Then again, maybe a dandilion effect is already taking place? 😀

my tongue was so firmly in cheek, it was sticking outside my body!

Bear, if it was outside your body it wasn’t “in cheek”. More like sticking your tongue out at someone. Unless you were pulling a Groucho Marx kinda’ thing there. When asked by an already tightly hugging dance partner to get closer, he said, “if I was any closer I’d be in back of you”. Maybe that was it. You a Marxist? Like Ginch?

My Dad screws it up, every time(Convoluted line….He , like me-is a Groucho Marxist only and why “me” is one of course) but, he will tell someone on the phone every few months…Ever see a Marx brother film?? In one Groucho had a woman making the moves on him, and she says hold me closer, CLOSER! And Groucho says, I’d be behind you if I held you any closer! 🙄 He screws up the punchline, every time, and in the same way, every time…very consistent the old man! 😆

Is Frenchy really getting the night off??? Or was the game called???

Wrong day to give him the day off…do what we used to do when McCann used to get days off(Only Frenchy has played more games than McCann, by the way) give him the day off after a day off! What is the point of day off, when you have already played that day??? Grrr! 😡

frenchy is getting the night game off. doesn’t make much sense for two reasons: he already played today. an off day should be an day you get completely off.

the second reason is that the weak pitcher is pitching the night cap. would have made more sense to rest frenchy against maine who has the ability to eat up frenchy much more than the scrub who is pitching the night game.

Completely agree with Bear and WW on the nonsensical game off for Frenchy after a day game. Agreed also on the matchup with certain pitchers and Frenchy. This move looks more like an ‘appearance’ of selflessness and in no way strategic.

Maybe the upside will be that Francouer’s pressure to play iron man every game after this will be moot and Cox will begin to play the hot bat in right field or not feel so inclined (guilty?) to keep Jeff in games when pitchers that own him are in there. Nah… that would be expecting way too much from Cox to ask a ‘made man’ in Atlanta compete for the spot a little.

Gant calls BS even more and is a better game caller… but not a natural broadcaster. However, Jerome Jurenovich would make any partner look bad. I’m not a big Jerome fan. He should partner with Chip. Same approach… that ‘old school’ artificial radio voice stuff.

Klobber, dittos on Jordan and Gant with Lemmer’s game announcing. Love all those guys but none of them are very natural as broadcasters. Lemmer makes a better pre-game, talk format, Q&A guy. Haven’t listened to the radio much this year since I haven’t been traveling near as much.

First, let me congratulate the Braves. Now…

Ok, Cox pitches Boyer and Acosta in a 6-1 game that is the first of a DH, with two more games in the next two days and three against the D-backs this weekend before an off day. THAT’S STUPID ENOUGH. But then he pitches Acosta AGAIN to get out of an 8th inning jam AND THEN HAS HIM PITCH THE 9th ALSO AFTER KOTSAY GETS THE 4 RUN LEAD BACK. Acosta will now be ineffective through Friday no matter what happens.

Is there anyone here, and I mean anyone, that continues to disagree with me that Cox may be the worst bullpen manager in ML baseball? The loss of Coralles and Yost looms mighty big right about now.

‘Morning, folks! I read/heard somewhere when Coralles left that it had to do with the retirement package offered to him. The Braves don’t pay coaches very much – by baseball standards – all substantially less than $1m yr. (By MY standards, I’d be happier than a pig in the sunshine if I had that annual income!)

Through the years during brief dugout shots on TV, Pat was always up doing something – even consulting/talking with other coaches and players – and obviously giving advice to Bobby. I don’t see that anymore and I personally attribute that lack to the Braves record of the last few years.

I know nothing about Chino, but he isn’t the right person to manage Bobby. That’s what we’re really lacking now. After the way the players attacked the games yesterday, I’d LOVE to know who brought their change in attitude. They seemed to be playing with a single purpose – a team effort. Bunting? Successfully???? Where’s the smelling salts – 😆

If they maintain that attitude, we’ll be some very happy people in October. Maybe.

Gil, those NFL owners are dumb and greedy if they go down that path. The NFL players don’t get anywhere near the money they deserve – nowhere near what top baseball and basketball players make. They don’t get guaranteed contracts and don’t receive post retirement compensation and health benefits (something very costly to retired NFL players because the damage inflicted during their careers does not usually rear its ugly head until they are retired). Just a bunch of stupid millionaires and billionaires fighting about stupid things, The players will eventually be blamed by the public because the stupid fan always blames the millionaires and not the billionaires

One among us lives in a 170-year-old house in the middle of a dark, foreboding forest on the outskirts of Romaniatlanta, near the quaint little innocent town of Stuffville. Fog always hangs heavy in that forest and is only broken up by frequent heavy rain and intense lightning storms.

Word is, the mysterious inhabitant lives only to feast on the necks of beautiful women. Being a sleuth reporter, I decided to investigate. This may just be my most dangerous mission yet, but if there is a vampire or other such monster in our midst, I must have an interview with the creature.

Approaching the property, within a few miles I could hear the faint sounds of high-pitched, pleading screams… then silence. I thought about turning back, but then I heard deep laughter that wafted through the trees and down the dirt road like spirits in the night… dark, ancient spirits that beckoned me to come closer, closer, no matter the danger. These chilling sounds were followed by the eerie beat of drums… drum sounds like no other… getting louder and more intense with a powerful, ancient, ritual bass beat of something forbidden, something dark… something blood curdling.

Against every instinct in my being… one of which was, well, passing a chance with a cute little peach blossom I met on the way to my interview, uh… and an understandable apprehension about my investigative mission, I continued forward. Besides, good reporters have to put aside personal comfort when there is a story and such.

Anyway, as I pulled up in front of the old house, it was pitch black dark. The power was out due to the violent electric storm but I could see clearly when a bolt of lightning etched a blaze across the sky. The house looked like something out of a horror movie when that sky lit up… like it was pulsating to the sounds and the flashing light or something. Weird… downright creepy it was. I had chill bumps all over my body. Well, that would be about three chill bumps, since, well, I’m so small and all. But still…

About that time an even louder, more violent scream erupts and knocks me to the ground. Everything in my being screams out to put it in reverse and fly out of there and as fast as I can… escape for my very life. But for some reason I didn’t. Perhaps some invisible, dark and irresistible force drew me.

Making my way up the creaking steps toward the front door I am physically overwhelmed by the drumbeat, now much louder and more menacing than ever… pulsating to an under worldly beatonly interrupted by the sounds of more deathlike screams and a heavy, clashing, grinding metal sound, like a buzz saw.

Sneaking in under the front door, the sounds were so loud, pulsating and powerful I could hardly advance. Each blast of the drums and I was literally pressed against the wall. That’s OK, I thought to myself. I’m used to walls. I figured I’d just hang there until there was a break in the frightful fury. Anyway, I wondered what powerful, evil force was I coming under the spell of. What could be going on in this place?

All the while I was hoping those horrid sounds were just a rock band, maybe practicing in this out of the way rural place… or maybe a big party or something. But the power was out. In fact, the power was out for miles around. These screams and drums and metal sounds are not music. There is something very dark and devious going on here. Someone could be in danger. This could be a murder scene or something.

Then I thought, I should just turn and go… but I kept telling myself, “I am a sleuth reporter… it is my duty to report, but also to save damsels in distress”. Then I had another thought on top of that, “I have a job to do and I’m so, so close… oh, so close”. I was having many thoughts. Good thing I was in that Telepod, or somebody could get killed tonight. I’ll save them first and then have the interview. Yes… that’s what I determined.

There was a pause in the music. I continued into the dark house. Traveling from wall to wall, I searched every room… but there was no sound and no one in sight. Where was everyone, I wondered? Where was the screaming woman? Was she dead already? Was the vampire silently feasting? Was that why the screams and drums ended? Was I walking into a devious trap? Was I going to be the next victim? Can little, half-human fly reporters be bitten by a vampire? Where would he bite me? Would he be able to, uh, get a tooth in? Would he extract blood? How could he do that with such a little neck?

So many questions. Wonder what that little peach blossom is doing tomorrow night… wait, stop… mustn’t let my mind wander. Must not lose focus now. But she was a cute little… oh, STOP. Focus, MUST focus on the vampire… the danger, the damsel in distress.

Just as I was lost in thought, a bright flash of light lit up the house like a spotlight, followed by a loud crack like an explosion right next to the house. During that long lightning display, I could clearly see there was nobody and no, um, body anywhere in the house. What was going on? Had I dreamed this? Was I hallucinating sound? Was I lost in a trance like something out of Twilight Zone or something?

About that time, another large bolt of lightning struck. There he was on the back porch… I could see his silhouette. He was hunching over something. There was a sound… a frightful sound, like a vampire sucking the blood from his victim’s neck. Oooooh, this was the moment of truth. I crept closer, closer… sliding silently under the screen door. Now I was within feet of him.

The licking, sucking sounds were making me ill. It was now pitch black again. I hoped for another lightning strike so I could see what was happening, but in a way I was glad I couldn’t see the gruesome scene before me.

So many questions raced through my little head (I’m half human you know but there’s only so much room in my little head and all… but it’s growing. The transmutation will gradually make me a large as a… wait, I digress. There was the urgent life and death matter before me… the grizzly murder scene. Was it too late? Was the innocent damsel already dead? Could I still save her or should I assume she’s gone and just save myself? What should I do? Questions on top of questions. Yikes. I couldn’t fathom having an interview with this beastly vampire right over the freshly killed victim. My human instinct took over. No, I would not run. I would not hide. I would conquer my fear and fight this evil murderous blood sucking vampire.

My next move surprised even me and came without a thought of self-preservation. I was afraid but my anger overcame any fear and I attacked, head on. Yes, I flew right at the face of this monster. Bam! Whack! Whap! Three hits, right smack in the kisser. No, that’s not kisser as in lips or anything mind you, that’s detective talk for uh, face or jaw or something. Anyway, just as I was about launch my second attack, another streak of lightning lit up the sky… and the face of my adversary… and the body of his victim he was hunched over.

I could not believe my eyes. Right there in front of me was a scene I never, in all my years (months in human time) of investigative reporting and close calls, would have ever expected. I fell to the ground. I was numb. Plus I hurt my wing during the attack. The good people of Stuffville will not believe what happened next. It was an old pal o’ mine.

A familiar voice rang out, “Mr. Fly! Hey little buddy. I was about to swat you… buzzing me like that. What are you doing here? Why were you pulling that kamikaze stuff on my face?”

Embarrassed, relieved and totally confused, I said, “I uh, heard these drum and metal sounds and all. Heard there was a vampire and such living here. Came out for an interview. Didn’t know you lived here. What were those sounds? There’s no electricity in the house. What about those screams”, I asked.

“Relax little buddy… haven’t you ever heard of boom boxes and batteries? he asked. “Just rockin’ on a little heavy metal tunage little buddy”. Then I just had to ask, but what about the victim you were hunched over? I saw you and heard those licking sounds.

After laughing for what seemed like hours, my friend pointed to the victim and said, “See, over there… my puppy. She was afraid of the lightning so I was huddled over her, consoling her and such. She’s a good pup. She was lickin’ me as hard as she could… likes her ears scratched and such. I got slobber all over me. She’s a good little pup.”

Now I was even more embarrassed. How could I have thought… oh well, guess it could’ve happened to any reporter.

“Hey, you’re already here and this night is not good for traveling in, for man or beast… or uh, flies. Howzabout an ice cold brewski and some tunes while we sit here and watch this cool lightnin’ storm”, my buddy asked. Gathering myself and laughing at the whole thing, I just mumbled something like, sure… uh, thanks. Um, gott’ny cheese or anything?

“Sure, cheese-wiz. Hey, I’ll put on some music”, he said. “What’ll strike yer fancy, Megadeath, Deep Purple? Ozzie?” After the evening I just had, something a little lighter might be good, I answered. Got’ny James Taylor or such? Seeing that I was still shaken, my pal said, “sure, for you… some mellow tunes”.

So, there we sat, together… me and the Grinch and Grinchpup, sippin’ brews, listening to fire and rain, watching the downpour and the incredible light show overhead. It turned out to be a good evening. I was once again reminded… stuff isn’t always what it seems. Neither are people what they seem… in Stuffville anyway. They’re all different, but all are good and all is good in good ol’ Stuffville. No buttkissing zombies either.

Greeting’s B and S’ers ….still sick….took the last of the Prednisolone yesterday….throat swollen, ears blocked again(But no sinus congestion to speak of!)….had real trouble falling asleep, since I kept coughing…

I have been on two different antibiotics…still have congestion….been to doctor twice(Called one time in between to save the money of driving 50 miles round trip-got 2nd Antibiotic and worthless prescription cough syrup)

So, folks…what should I do??? I like my Doctor a lot…hard to see though, saw him the first time, a PA the second. Between Visits, buying meds, this has been quite expensive(On top of CT Scan I had just before I got sick)

I can’t just keep paying money and nothing getting better…I feel I should see a Ear, nose, and throat guy…of course, I don’t know a good one…I remember my Mom going to a really bad one, that prescribed a med(After looking at a list of what she was on) that our pharmacist said in conjunction with what she was already on, would kill her! 😯

Just beyond tired having to deal with this….kept me from working out for a month, cost me money I really didn’t need to spend….and feel like I will just cough so hard one night, that will be it….

I guess I need to see a specialist, one I know nothing about……..just hoped someone could think of something I haven’t thought of….

Assuming Esco sits tonight, who gets the start at SS? Infante? Gotay? I’d love to see him stand in like the tough guy he really is, but a night off wouldn’t hurt anything.

Man would I love to see Francouer on 1B with a grounder hit to Easly. In my vision, I see Reyes deflating like a cheap balloon as he’s bounced into left field. Ahhhhhhhh… good times. 🙂

FBG: Chipper was hit by a pitch on the leg. After he walked off and paused to absorb the pain, he tried to flip the bat around, and conked himself on the noggin with the knob. He played it off pretty well, though, with the hurtin’ leg and all. Still, I had to laugh a little…

I couldn’t really ever feel sorry for the Mets per se, but I do feel sorry a bit for Willie Randolph….as Joe said earlier, was it his fault Castillo booted the ball?(I came in with him saying this, but I don’t see an error for Castillo, was it a double play turned into a fielder’s choice???)

The Mets don’t really look like much of a team, IMHO. Castillo is very good, IF his knee is sound….Delgado is not what he once was…They have a ok catcher, more defensive than offensive one…It appears Alou can still get around on a good fastball, but he’s 41, and ain’t gonna be on the field much….

Santana, Maine, and Oliver are a very good 3, and Wagner can close ’em out…but, that’s really it…..like I said before, Phils and Marlins are the teams for us to beat…

Berigan, it should have been ruled an infield hit. Castillo didn’t boot the ball. It initially appeared that he just froze for a split second. The replay indicated that he couldn’t find the handle as fast as he needed to. Whatever it was, it was enough time for the runner to get to 1b.

Hate to disagree with you but I don’t feel sorry for Randolph at all. Don’t know if you saw where he played the race card. If there is a legitimate reason to bring race into an issue, I’m fine. But his comments were just beyond asinine.

The Mets seem like a team on the verge of blowing up.

Why was Castillo playing so far back on that play anyway? He was way back on the edge of the grass. That actually is kinda Willie Randolph’s fault…

Was it yesterday that Castillo was just standing around watching the ballup the middle when it kicked his way? If he had been moving on the hit, he coulda fielded it and made a play. Just lackadaisical play, yet he’s back in the lineup today. That’s also Willie’s fault.

    I’m just sayin’…

He nearly lost his eye and while he did pitch again, he was never the same. The pitcher sets up so close to the plate and is even closer when his delivery is completed. It’s amazing that more guys aren’t hit by batted balls (or broken maple bats).

I agree. Canseco is not exactly the most credible witness. Baseball is a pretty tight fraternity. His actions will not be remembered well amongst those in the game.

However, I have a feeling that history will remember him a little more favorably. My guess is that his book will be considered the point that the big ugly truth about steroids in baseball was brought out into the open. Without that book, the first set of Congressional hearings would have never been held. McGwire, Sosa and Palmeiro would still be members in good standing in the baseball world. It really opened the world’s eye to the problems in the game and at some level, he deserves some credit for that.

I know that his intentions were not pure. He’s a scum bag and did it purely for greed. If he hadn’t been blackballed and could have found a job in baseball somewhere he would have never written it. But it wasn’t all bad in the end. Hopefully the game will clean itself up (if it hasn’t already) and resume its rightful place as “America’s Sport”.

FBG, I already told you. Paladin is in Tuscany arranging purchase of a container of Chianti. He probably fell for one of the local girls there so we might not here from him for a while.

How long does Cialis last? We’ll hear from him after that! 😀

If it lasts longer than four hours he’s supposed to call his doctor. I remember a stand-up comedian saying “Call my doctor, hell! If I had one that lasted that long I’d call my friends over…Hey, y’all, check THIS one out!”

    Ichabod Crane? 😕 Oops…nope, can’t be. 😳 Has a face…means he has a head, too!

Salty, contrary to popular belief, just having one doesn’t make the women flock to your doorstep in and of itself. Or at least not the ones you don’t need medical attention afterwards. 🙂

    Off to the gym.

Did no one even see when I revealed what JB ACTUALLY means? There was still speculation being posted.

I guess my identity is still safe.

By the way… Good news Braves won 11-2 and take three in a row

Bad News, a kid slid down the railing at Turner, fell backwards 150 and died at the game.

    Didn’t know if you heard.
