MECHANICSVILLE, VA – As we approach the magic one third mark of the season, most major league teams take stock of their situation to see where they stand as far as personnel and what is needed going forward. Often times this is the time when teams decide if they are buyers or sellers and if they have a chance to be serious contenders or view the likelihood of being an also ran and begin building for the next season.

The 2008 version of the Atlanta Braves had reason to believe they were a team with which to vie for the National League East and even a possible shot at returning to the World Series. Good pitching depth and a strong offensive line up was in evidence. The Braves only apparent weakness was a lack of bench strength. Funny how the wheels began to fall off even before the start of the season.

John Smoltz began the season on the DL with what we now know as likely a career ending injury. Perhaps we should think back to the night he pitched magnificently against the Astros in the Braves last appearance in the NL playoffs and a shirtless Smoltz revealed a tremendous amount of bleeding around his right shoulder. For him to pitch the past two years has been a testament to his grit but the ravages of time have apparently taken their toll and it seems to many that John has made his last pitch as a major leaguer.

Mike Hampton was never really counted on this year like he was in 2007 but all seemed ready for the stoic lefty to finally justify the $13 million due to him this year. Alas, it was not to be, another freak injury claimed him and who knows if he will ever pitch again effectively although the return of even a mildly capable Mike Hampton could yet salvage the season for the Braves.

Chuck James went down early. Never a pitcher with a large repertoire of baffling pitches to keep opposing batters off balance, his inability to keep pitches down combined with a diminished speed deferential between his fastball and his change up, he began giving up homeruns at an alarming rate. This led to his demotion back to AAA Richmond and a mind set that he has to reinvent himself as a pitcher.

The cause of Tom Glavin’s woes have finally surfaced: a sore elbow. Who else besides me sees this as a deal breaker for a 41 year old pitcher who has been know as an innings eater throughout his career? It also explains the loss of movement on his pitches and to me may be the harbinger of a season to forget for the Bravos.

The loss of Peter Moylan and the limited availability of Soriano have also put a tremendous strain on the Braves’ bullpen. There is a correlation between the effectiveness of a team’s bullpen and the number of innings they are forced to pitch. Manny Acosta is just not capable of pitching everyday and I don’t think any other pitcher on the Braves staff is either.

So, what do you have when 4/5th of your projected starting staff and three of your most effective relievers are out with injuries? A club that more closely resembles the Washington Nationals than one that resembles the Philadelphia Phillies. The Braves cannot afford to slip much further behind the front runners if they expect to have a chance this year but counting on young pitchers like Charlie Morton to come to the rescue may be placing too much of a burden on a young rookie who is only now finding success. Steve Avery comes to mind when making a comparison of expectations by the Braves Nation and the likelihood he will struggle in his début season.

NO JURRJENS TONIGHT: According to Braves.Com, Jair Jurrjens hurt his ankle leaving Wrigley Field last night:

    http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080611&content_id=2889694&vkey=news_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl

Jeff Bennett will start in place of Jurrjens. Just posted something short on http://braves.today.com about Bennett taking Jurrjens’ place … Bennett hasn’t started since April 23, but has pitched well out of the bullpen for the most part.

Geez, folks, can it get any worse? Not exactly the way to start the road trip.

“I feel like I’m in the twilight zone,” Braves general manager Frank Wren said. “I’m going to be like Pavlov’s dog and have an aversion to phones ringing.”

Wren confirmed that Charlie Morton, who has gone 4-2 with a 2.05 ERA for Triple-A Richmond, will likely start in Glavine’s place on Sunday, when the Braves play the Angels before ESPN’s nationally-televised audience.

“I think it’s more than likely [going to be Morton],” Wren said. “But we haven’t made a decision.”

Right you are Gil! Sadly, we are closer to the Nationals, than the Phils. I felt watching the games against them the way I did when we played AL teams last June, that we were not in the same league(pun not intended, honest!) with those teams!

Can’t blame it all on the manager, and coaching staff of course(And now with scribe posting that Jurrjens will miss a start because of spraining his ankle!!!) But, look at a team like the Cardinals. No one thought they would do well this year, heck the Pirates look to have had a more talented team 1-9 than them.
But, there the cards are, without their number one all year, Chris Carpenter . Their version of Hampton, Mark Mulder hasn’t pitched all year. I see they also have Matt Clement listed as a pitcher on their roster. Hasn’t pitched for them. Name their starters on their team right now! I double dog dare ya! Ok, we all know Wainwright, right??? Heck, he just went on the DL.
And they are 12 games above .500.

How about a team like the Giants??? Everyone and their brother (Including me) knew they were going to lose at least 100 games, and would be way back in last place.
Instead, they are in 3rd place, 6 games back. Who expected that??? Oh well, they have all those great pitchers. Like Matt Cain, 3-4, 4.43 ERA. Hmmm. Barry Zito, 2-9 5.83 ERA. Pat Misch, 0-3, 6.07 ERA….who are their great hitters???

Got to give a fair about of credit to the Cards and Giants records to their managers, and their coaches….got to give a fair amout of blame to the braves poor play to their manager and his coaches….

He knew they were trained to do a job and he called on them to do it. They got out with relatively few casualties while inflicting many.

Yes Berigan, the Cardinals have done a wonderful job with the smoke and mirrors but it was last year they were bitten the terrible injury bug. They have regrouped but I doubt they will catch the Cubs this year. The Giants went through an awful spell at the beginning of the season. Their young pitching is carrying them now but they are not going to win the West this year either.

I am not a stanch Bobby Cox defender but I remember when guys like Chuck Tanner and Russ Nixon were managing the Braves.

Yes, at some point a change will be made but it is the players who must answer the bell. Is Clint Hurdle a bad manager because the Rockies have gone to first to worse or it because they are missing guys like Holliday?

One of my favorite managers of all time was Ralph Houk. Yes, he managed the hated Yankees but he, himself, was a hero. As an Army Ranger he won the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. As a manager, he won 2 World Series. Yes, he had Mantle, Berra, Marris, Ford, etc. but he “handled” them. All of them got their butt chewed at one time. In the minors he once kicked Tommy Lasorda in the posterior(for this alone he should have won the Medal of Honor). Allegedly, in ST he said, “You know what we are here to do. Any one who doesn’t think they can do their job, I’ll put someone in that can, or wants to. Any questions?” Lasorda btw, called him the greatest handler of men he ever saw. Say what you will about Lasorda, he was pretty good himself.

Gil, I know what your saying…I too recall Chuck Tanner(Won a WS with the Pirates, couldn’t do anything with the braves) I just see far too many mistakes from the Manager. Mistakes I could understand from a new manager, not a guy who should have forgotten more about baseball than most of us know…perhaps he has!

Of course, like you said, all of the sudden, Clint Hurdle doesn’t look too bright, with their record.

I think Jurrjens ankle problem might be a blessing in disguise, a little rest for his arm, and he will pitch like the Jurrjens of earlier in the year….

Pappy, right you are about Lasorda! 2 world series rings, and that team from 1988 had to be the worst hitting team ever to play, and win a world series!

    And don’t forget….

    2000 Summer Olympics
Lasorda came out of retirement to manage the United States team at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He led the Americans to the gold medal, beating heavily favored Cuba, which had won the gold medals at the two previous Olympics.

You know things are really weird when this happens!!! 😯

    From DOB…

here’s a head-scratcher ROSTER MOVE: Josh Anderson was sent back to Richmond and Brandon Jones brought up. No one I talked to could make any sense of that move. Cox said they just thought they could play Jones some in LF and let Norton give Tex a break at 1B for some interleague games, so Tex could DH possibly.

But that didn’t explain the move, of course, because Anderson plays LF (and CF and RF). Several folks I talked to felt Anderson didn’t deserve to be sent down. Anderson told me he was shocked and disappointed, but he’s such a nice guy he said he appreciated the opportunity and that God has a plan for him and that something good’s going to happen, all that.

I really feel sorry for Anderson, why the bleep send him down and keep Frenchy on the club????

Gil, very good lead. A perfect storm it has been and every day a new ‘rain squall’ arrives in the form of another injury. Per the article, I’m sure Wren doesn’t even want to pick up his phone in the mornings. It’s bizarre… the strangest set of circumstances I’ve ever witnessed.

I’m not insinuating anything but you have to wonder if folks out there are jumping to conclusions about the ironic (suspicious) timing of the unprecedented rash of injuries this season, not just with Braves but around baseball. Is it an odd coincidence in the year of the steroid and HGH scandals with ramped up testing in the MLB that we would see so many injured players? I’ll not speculate, but it is strange to say the least. Makes you go, hmmm…

Pappy, you’ve been on a roll today. Good post at 12:41 and the one about the TP as manager thing. Oh, and Casey Stengel… loved the guy, what a character.

I’m with you on going out of house for a new manager. Of course that may take a while because Bobby and the franchise, for their own reasons, want to lengthen the job and ‘institution’ of Bobby Cox. Both parties have financial, personal and sentimental reasons for continuing as long as possible, regardless of how the team is being managed or how they do in the standings.

Oh, and Liberty is probably just fine with it too, so I don’t expect the 2009 extension to be the last Cox is offered unless there is a new owner that wants to win or a circumstance that would cause or force the retirement. Obviously that’s me just guessing.

Some of you guys have mentioned Eddie Perez or Terry Pendleton as manager, bench coach, whatever. I just don’t see that. He’s a likeable guy but where are his credentials? Where’s the experience? The training? Sure, a non-trained manager can become a good manager but it’s a guess as to how long it’ll take or how they’ll eventually succeed.

We’ve already got a good ‘ol boy network going on in Atlanta with Terry, Eddie, Chino, Glenn, Brian, Roger, Bobby, Frank and John. In spite of what we see (and interpret) on TV close-ups and snippets and read on blogs, which of our current coaches is doing a great job and getting results? Which are not? Which are too old, too inexperienced, too entrenched in Bobby-Ball to achieve positive results in spite of this year’s distractions, dysfunction and injuries? It’s impossible to tell from the outside looking in and impossible to gauge with the circumstances as they’ve unfolded this season.

How do we separate out one coach and pre-judge their capabilities and effectiveness if they are all under the instruction of Cox?

There are so many intangibles and overlapping factors in the current Braves organization for any outsider to base an opinion on facts or evidence, but I do know this: promoting someone because they are an ex-player, clubhouse favorite and all around nice guy who happens to have no appropriate experience in coaching – much less managing – is risky, potentially disastrous and just a very bad idea. But that hasn’t stopped the current regime.

Talented players, even the nice ones that are passionate about the game, don’t necessarily have the skill set to become talented coaches or managers. It’s not a matter of incompetence or a lack of intelligence I’m talking about with anyone, it’s area of expertise and manager or coach levels of competence.

Peter has a ‘Principle’ and a very hard glass ceiling for matters such as these.

Gil, once again, I enjoyed your lead. Well, maybe ‘enjoy’ isn’t the right word with all the injuries discussed. It was good. Well, maybe that isn’t quite right either… might be sadistic to, you know, in light of all the DL’s. It was interesting and well done. Yeah, that’s more like it. Anyhoo, Meant to ask and plum forgot… by your header, “Observation from an Interested Observer”, I was just wondering:

    A. Are you implying that you’ve completed the transition from Braves fan to Washington fan? If so, that Richmond departure musta’ cut deep. Or…

    B. As you wrote, were you showing subtle displeasure with the Braves season?

    C. Just having fun with the use of ‘observe’ by using it twice in the headline?

    D. Accidentally copied and pasted ‘observer’ when you meant to paste ‘fan’?

    E. Your cat jumped on the keyboard and destroyed the ‘f’, ‘a’ and ‘n’ keys?

    F. Your thesaurus went on the blink right before copy deadline?

    G. CL screwed it up when she posted it? (can always blame the host).

Yes SG…. Maybe all of the above….

After posting I also became aware of that age old error of using the same adjectives twice. It is why editors are employed. Of course I have the ability to change it but I think it makes things more interesting, kind of like watching Kelly play the field…

At least with Washington, there were no lofty expectations. When you have a collection of misfit toys, you have to pretty much expect what you get.

And yes, I am still bitter about the move to Gwinnett but as DOB reminded me. Nobody else cares so I have to get over it…. or not…

And yes, everyone is still scratching their head on why Brando Jones was called up and Josh Anderson sent back down… Maybe Bobby wanted to check Brandon’s progress and did not want to wait until next year when he could drive up to Gwinnett.

    2006: 2-11

    2007: 5-9

Seriously, I do have a one day sabbatical from the big A, so I am back in my home office haven.

Rather than begin to thrash the Braves for nother lackluster performance, I’d like to note something. Ber posted this in the midst of last night’s game:

Man, terrible news! A boyscout camp in Nebraska has been hit by a tornado! At least 4 killed, 20 injured!

You know what? The Braves are just playing a game, albeit not very well right now. At the end of this season, regardless of where they finish, they’ll begin readying for next season. And so it goes for MLB. This tragedy in Iowa has finality. There are losses there that have no next season.

I’ll continue to gripe and moan about the level of play from our boys in the road blue, but it really isn’t going to cause me distress. My heart is broken for the families of those kids killed and injured in Iowa.

Sorry to be such a downer, but those tornadoes that ripped through the midwest yesterday are a great source of perspective for me.

Now, I hope the Braves shed those blue unis and find a way to beat Zambrano tonight.

    Speaking of change(s)

    “CHANGE”

The buzzword of this election is ‘CHANGE’. Candidates toss it around without saying what they want to change to.

Years ago, there was an old tale in the Marine Corps about a
lieutenant who inspected his Marines and told the ‘Gunny’ that they smelled bad. The lieutenant suggested that they change their underwear. The Gunny responded, ‘Aye,aye, sir, I’ll see to it immediately’. He went into the tent and said, ‘The lieutenant thinks you guys smell bad, and wants you to change your underwear. Smith, you change with Jones, McCarthy, you change with Witkowskie, Brown, you change with Schultz. Get to it’.

The moral: A candidate may promise change in Washington, but don’t count on things smelling any better.

SG: I think it makes very good sense that Eddie Perez has manager potential. Maybe not at this very moment, but I believe he would make a very good ML manager. He spent a number of years on this team as a backup and sometimes starting catcher. His playing experience gives him the perspective of the field quarterback who calls defenses, lines up fielders, calls games, etc. Of all positions on the field, I believe that catcher is uniquely tied in to the finer strategical aspects of the game. Also, in his time onthe bench as backup, Eddie spent alot of time studying at the “master’s feet”, so to speak. It was noted many times during tose games that Eddie often sat very close to Bobby and studied the game from a managerial perspective because he had managerial asperations. And before y’all begin crackin’ on Bobby, he is HOF manager.

My goal for him in the immediate future is as bench coach. Chino should go. I think Chino’s biggest contribution to this team is as interpreter. Seriously… I think that’s why he is here… He could go to the bullpen for Eddie.

Here is my take on managers and coaches. First, I think it is totally ridiculous that they wear uniforms. Can you imagine gymnastic and beach volley ball coaches wearing unis? BTW, Connie Mack(who I mentioned yesterday)was the last one–I think–to wear a coat and tie. Anyway, if they are going to wear uniforms they should look like they belong in them. I’m not saying they have to be “ripped”, but a lot few donlop bellies would be a start. As a player I would have a lot more respect for someone with some personal pride and willingness to keep himself in shape who was telling me to do so. I could go on, but hopefully, you get my point.

About the interpreter issue, I can’t fault the Latin players for not all speaking great English because it is such a difficult language to learn. But if I were a GM/ team president/ other bigwig, I would have English tutors working with all my minor league teams giving the young Latin players intensive English lessons and teaching the American players some Spanish too. Now if you have Asian players too it gets more complicated.

Cornelius Alexander Mack (December 22, 1862 – February 8, 1956), born Cornelius Alexander McGillicuddy, was an American professional baseball player, manager, and team owner. Considered one of the greatest managers in Major League Baseball history, he holds records for wins (3,731), losses (3,948), and games managed (7,755), with his victory total being almost 1,000 more than any other manager. He managed the Philadelphia Athletics for the club’s first 50 seasons of play before retiring at age 87 following the 1950 season. He was the first manager to win the World Series three times, and is the only manager to win consecutive Series on separate occasions (1910-11, 1929-30); his five Series titles remain the third most by any manager, and his nine American League pennants rank second in league history. However, constant financial struggles forced repeated rebuilding of the roster, and Mack’s teams also finished in last place 17 times.

Now, to baseball….I have gotten ill feeling after games, usually playoff games though…

But, I saw something last night that made me as mad as I have ever been at the team, and it was something that happened between innings.

I can rewind a program with my DISH DVR, and had left the tv on in another room after giving up on the game. Saw it was the postgame show, and just wanted to see what Ron and Jerome, et al said….so, rewound it 30 minutes, hit record, and recorded it to watch later(Ain’t technology grand! )

So, typical stuff(Everyone was fairly critical, but seemed to have to censor themselves, hey we don’t want people to stop watching!) was reported, but then they showed footage of Jeff Ridgeway after his first inning as a brave coming into the dugout. No runs were scored, and he had struck out 2. No one, NO ONE congratulated him!!!!! I’d use the little angry smiley face, but that is more comical than angry, and that really PO’ed me! It isn’t his fault the team sucks right now! I heard on the radio that he had a terrible record with the Tampa bay team last year, like 9 of the 10 hitters he faced got hits against him!

So, imagine being Jeff Ridgeway, wondering if you would ever get another chance in the majors, getting that chance because of many injuries, and not even bench players can bother to get off their butts to high 5 you!!! That, is poor, that is selfish, and that is not what winning teams do.

Someone should apologize to the young man….Bobby on down, everyone really…..

And anyone hear what personal reason Bennett left for right after the game???

Bobby was strangely critical of Bennett last night, said he made some great pitches and some really bad ones. How he had just thrown one right by Fukodome before the homer…I think it was an offspeed pitch he hit, but it was low, and in. Gee Bobby, do you think overwork makes it hard to snap off really good breaking pitches??? And everyone said he was squeezed on the strike zone as well…..hopefully, everything is aok with him….

Ridgway appeared in three games last year and recorded ONE out! His career ERA before last night’s game was 189.00! Last night’s good work brought it down to 27.00. from ajc:

It’s been an injury-plagued season for Chipper Jones, Bobby Cox and the Braves. With the recent addition of Tom Glavine, there was $62 million worth of players out of action. That’s more than half of the Braves’ payroll and more than Tampa Bay, Kansas City and Florida are spending the entire season.

Having more than half of his payroll on the DL is probably not how Braves GM Frank Wren envisioned spending his first year on the job. What follows is a breakdown of the Braves disabled list.

Relief pitcher Peter Moylan was placed on the 15-day DL, April 15. He is out for the season, after right elbow surgery.Salary: $410,000

Outfielder Matt Diaz was placed on 15-day DL, May 28, with a torn ligament in left knee. Salary: $1.2 million.

Pitcher Mike Gonzalez was placed on the 15-day DL, March 22, with a left knee injury. Salary: $2.4 million

Outfielder Mark Kotsay was placed on the 15-day DL, May 30, with soreness in his lower back. Salary: $7 million

Pitcher John Smoltz was placed on the DL for the fourth time this season on June 4. He is out for the season, after having surgery June 10. Salary: $14 million.

Pitcher Mike Hampton was placed on the 15-day DL, April 4, with a strained pectoral muscle. He has not appeared in a Braves’ game in 33 months. Salary: $15 million.

Infielder Martin Prado was placed on the 15-day DL, May 5, with a left thumb injury. Salary: $390,000

Braves pitcher Anthony Lerew was placed on the 60-day DL, March 22, after left elbow surgery. Salary: $390,000

Tom Glavine was the most recent to join the disabled list. The Braves’ left-hander was placed on the disabled list, after straining his pitching elbow against the Cubs on Tuesday.Salary: $8 million.

I believe he would make a very good ML manager… Eddie spent alot of time studying at the “master’s feet”, so to speak. It was noted many times during tose games that Eddie often sat very close to Bobby and studied the game from a managerial perspective because he had managerial asperations.

Raisins, you just made part of my point here. Here’s the thing… Eddie may have been busy at the “feet of the master” and working very hard absorbing all he can about management… he may even achieve his manager education, reach his goals and make the best manager in the history of baseball, we just don’t know. Reminds me of a sports quote that fits:

“Never mistake activity for achievement.”- Bill Walton.

Nobody, even in the Braves clubhouse knows whether he’d step up and do all the things a good manager does and lead the Braves team to the next level… into the post season and into 21st century. Both outcomes are connected.

The next manager needs to bring all of the experience as a player (which EP has), the management skill set (not yet), the understanding of the technology and mathematic tools, strategies and tactics necessary to compete in the future, which as far as I’ve heard, starts in 2010 after Bobby leaves… if he leaves. Maybe I should just say, the Braves future begins when and only when Bobby’s manager career ends.

Here’s the catch: Bobby has been running his own type of program. Sure, he’s a HOF manager and for the most part his ‘way’ has (arguably) worked for the last couple of decades. That era is over and Cox is finished as a suitable manager for a team that wants to win, whether he, the Braves organization or many fans think so. Whether we accept reality or not, it won’t change because we say so or hope so. Not without divine intervention anyway.

That’s not a cut on Bobby. He’s just older, he has less energy, he’s less effective and pro sport management is evolving beyond where Cox is in terms of modern ‘tools’. Managers in pro sports will have to embrace new, innovative ways… Bobby is waist to chest deep in the tar pits. That fact does not discount his success, his worth or his HOF credentials… it just is what it is.

Again, that’s not a knock on BC. I’m older now and am not able to do some things as well as the younger folks in my business. Should I hold the company back because I’ve done good things in the past? Should I embrace new, better ways and a new role for myself so that the company has the best chance to succeed? Should I turn over the reins in areas of my activity that are now less effective? You bet.

Should I regret that others can do better, faster or more efficiently what I used to do so well. Not at all… I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s the natural progression of life and work. I would not hurt my own chances of success because I wanted to ‘hang on’ to duties just because I had the rank to call the shot and do as I pleased. Another pertinent quote:

“When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened.” – Alexander Graham Bell.

Right or wrong, here’s something that troubles me when I think about Eddie Perez or Terry Pendleton taking over as bench coach or manager: They have both learned the old ways from the old master. They are part of the good ‘ol boy clubhouse. They may both be totally separated from that philosophically and strategically, but there they are.

“If you have always done it that way, it is probably wrong.” – Charles Kettering.

“An organization’s ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage.” – Jack Welch

When the Braves hire a new manager I’d like to think we would be stepping into the sophisticated future of pro management, not a succession of ‘ranked by tenure’ or other old school, good ol’ boy legacy motivations. Maybe we’ll throw the baby out with the bathwater, but sometimes in business, sports and life, we raise the bar on requirements and expectations.

“Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the men of old; seek what they sought.” – Matsuo Basho.

We fans have absolutely zero impact on what the Braves organization does or what Bobby does. I suspect there may be some lack of self awareness there on all parts of the decision chain, but I’d hope to see Cox retire after this season, take his bows, accept his accolades, start the HOF clock, get a grand job alongside Hank and John and live a wonderful life. Oh, and I’d like his to witness what the right, next generation manager can do with the team. Anyway, that’s what I believe about that. But then, what the heck do I know?

SG: You make many good points. I happen to not agree with all of them, but that is the nature of discourse, eh?

A pedigree of experience and success does not always translate into success at the next stop. One only needs to look back at Chuck Tanner in a Braves uni to see that.

Can a manager who “studies” under the old ways of Bobby succeed with their own team and in their own way? One only needs to look at Fredi Gonzalez in Miami.

There is really no reason to believe that any player or coach who “studied” under Bobby will manage like Bobby. One only needs to look at Ned Yost or even Ozzie Guillen to see that.

The bottom line, though, is that you can never know how a manager will fare, or a team will play under said manager, until it happens. Davey Johnson was a genius in NY, a scapegoat in Baltimore, and out of the game since. Does Bobby manage that differently this year than he did a few years ago when the roster was first populated by the “Baby Braves” and he was named NL Manager of the Year? I really don’t think it’s drastically different… I do think, though, that this year’s expectations were drastically different.

    I really liked this quote….
“When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened.” – Alexander Graham Bell.

    So very true!

One thing I will say in TP’s defense…..He has to follow the bosses rules, and perhaps, just perhaps he’s thinking, if/when I am in charge, I will change, this, that and the other…..could be wrong as well.

As much as it appears he is being groomed to be Cox’s successor, he has to be getting tired of waiting for him to retire….he knows he won’t be the Braves manager in 2009, so he might consider options to manage elsewhere come the off-season.

I got a little snippy earlier and I’m sorry. But, I am frustrated. You can NOT settle for mediocrity. You CAN’T. Yes, we may be setting a record for players lost, but you HAVE to carry on. I love Kotsay, and MATT and even KJ, but there are players available that can replace them. GO GET THEM. The ones we have are not doing the job! This is a management failure and they MUST fix it.

SG, Raisins and B-cubed; All of you make excellent points about the managerial situation. SG’s sounds like a operations manual, but GOOD points. 😛 The main thing is that we are having civil discourse about this with no donkey references. It is criticism, but as NVP said, criticism is good. Without it, we would never get better.

Good evening y’all. I enjoyed that game ’til the late innings. Had to leave to go to dinner in the middle of the 11th. So I mercifully didn’t have to suffer through the bottom of the inning. Tim Hudson has my permission to slap the face of everyone else on the team, he deserved better. But I do love the socks, keep wearing ’em!

Hudson had to get IVs when he came out of the game. He was so dehydrated he couldn’t bend his hands, according to Cox. Hudson was still in the training room with an IV bag hooked to his arm, and wasn’t going to be available to talk anytime soon.

I don’t know anything about basketball but I did watch a good bit of that game last night. Anyone else see a parallel with what happened last night and the Braves? The Lakers take a big early lead and then put it on auto pilot. Guess what, the Celtics wanted that game more than the Lakers did. They found a way to come back and win that game.

Too many times this year we’ve seen the Braves take a lead in the early innings only to lose the game. I can’t blame it on the blowpen alone. There have been far too many opportunities that the offense has not capitalized upon and too many dominant starting pitching performances that have been squandered away.

This team has no soul, no spirit, no heart and no drive.

Top of the morning, denizens. Between meetings right now, so a quick take:

    — Klobber, I stayed up and watched the Celts come back. Made me happy; not a big Kobe fan, per se. Interesting observation. I see the parallel, but only to a certain degree.

I really felt like the Lakers put it into cruise control, which you can’t do in the third quarter of an NBA game even if you have a 20-point lead. Heck, the Lakers nearly rallied from that type of deficit in Game 2; they should know as well as anybody you’ve got to put the hammer down and kill off the opposition when you have the chance.

And to a certain extent, I see that with the Braves. But I think the problem with Atlanta now is between the ears as much as anything. When the Braves were rolling at home, they took good at-bats, worked the count, didn’t press, even when trailing late in games. The past three weeks (starting with the trip to Milwaukee and Cincy), most of the team has locked up tighter than all get-out in the late innings when the game is close.

I call it a good old-fashioned lack of confidence, and the human element of “here we go again.” I don’t know if I’d call that no soul, no spirit, no heart and no drive. Wednesday’s blowout loss was all of that, without a doubt, but I think that debacle stemmed from the triple-blow of Smoltz’s surgery, Glavine’s injury, Jurrjens’ injury. No excuse for acting like you want to be somewhere else. That’s what I saw Wednesday.

I liked the effort a whole lot more yesterday, even if the results weren’t there. The Braves looked, to me, like they cared. They didn’t look like they cared Wednesday night, which is why — as I wrote on http://braves.today.com yesterday morning — I had to get out of the house as that blowout unfolded Wednesday.

Yesterday’s game really made me mad, but more from the sense of this team just not being able to seal the deal, not being able to compete with a team like the Cubs (i.e., a playoff team), as opposed to a lack of caring and commitment.

Just my two cents worth. You know, this team better start winning, or else we’re all going to need a new set of adjectives to describe this …

    That, and some therapy.

I would be the last to argue with the Scribe. As the saying goes, he has forgotten more about baseball than I ever knew. But, at the same time, I know men. I don’t see the fire of competition in the Braves that are playing now. Losing is not the end of the world…in sports. However, lack of effort and accountability is. For instance, the Nats are losing but if I were a fan of theirs I would not be ashamed. They are doing what they can with what they have. And they are giving everybody a fight. I don’t see that in the Braves. They are lifeless and don’t really seem to care…enough to do better. Yes, everyone hates to lose but some hate it to much to let it happen. When they show me that they really care I’ll get back on board. Right now, they don’t care and I don’t either.

008… I was once a big hockey fan. The teams I rooted for were seldom the most talented but I sure loved their fight. They did not have to win to make me happy, only play to the maximum and not roll over. Yes, the current version of the Braves appears to lack that sort of fire and drive. Too laid back for my taste.

The Phillies have always been a team with an attitude, sometimes to their own detriment. That said, the team I respect the most right now is the Marlins. I detest their owner but I really have to give it to a bunch of guys who are hanging in despite the pre-season predictions of a losing season.

And yes, the Celtics played one for the ages last night. I guess they were not ready to believe they were suppose to lay down for the Lakers….

LATE BREAKING AND DEVASTATING NEWS JUST IN FROM ANAHEIM:

Just when you thought things could not possibly get worse for the Braves, a large meteor fragment was detected just before game time in the visitor’s clubhouse in Anaheim. All Braves players have potentially been exposed to volatile and oxidized elements and dangerous levels of radium, pallasites, iron and nickel.

Like the Braves, meteorites are considered pristine samples of early solar system matter, although in many cases their properties have been modified by thermal metamorphism or icy alteration. The majority of meteorites are believed to be fragments of asteroids.

A meteoroid is matter revolving around the sun or any object in interplanetary space that is too small to be called an asteroid or a comet. These bodies are sometimes watched for decades, glowing brightly as they reach a crescendo and flame out. This particular meteoroid that crashed into Angel Stadium was first spotted in 1991, peaking in 1995 and glowed brightly until 2005, before reaching atmosphere and plummeting to earth.

Upon hearing this news, Braves manager Bobby Cox took matters into his own hands and immediately sent bench manager Chino Cadahia out for Preparation H. Chino was sent on this mission because he speaks fluent Spanish, which is the predominant language in Southern California retail stores. When Frank Wren learned of this, he called Bobby aside and explained that asteroids and meteoroids were from space and not, uh… other, more earthly ‘roids. Chino was recalled.

Later, when Cox learned of Chippers numb left cheek after batting practice, he was heard to mumble, “Left cheek, right cheek, whatever. I’ve had numb cheeks for years, sittin’ on that bench watchin’ games for hours at a stretch. I don’t run off to get x-rays”. Frank Wren was within earshot, heard the comment and called Bobby off to the side again.

    More later.

Just when it seemed the friendly confines of ‘home’ and the supposedly welcoming familiarity of the National League East were preferable… upon superficial examination, one discovers that ‘away’ games ‘over there’ across the great divide may be more left coast, but the environs are just as friendly. The ‘away’ stadium seems to respond more to effort and appreciates hits more than in our own, supposedly friendly home stadium.

Must be American League rules and different umps kinda’ thing. Maybe it’s a familiarity thing. Whatever. Go Braves.

Further evidence of the ‘Goofy Disneyfication’ of baseball…

A snippet or three from the AJC (Braves extended PR group), article might relieve those that are worried about life on earth (or the Ted).

Just think of it as ‘An announcement from the Liberty Media Department of Strategic Baseball Priorities’ (interpretation: If you can’t dazzle’em on the field, distract’em, make’em laugh and sell’em lots of food):

“Chick-fil-A’s metro Atlanta restaurants are taking the company’s cow campaign to new heights, hoisting a 40-foot tall, 15,000-pound, tomahawk-chopping mechanical cow atop the Braves’ stadium.” “In addition to the cow, Chick-fil-A recently opened two outlets at Turner Field.”

“The cow will chop at every game.”

Well, dunno ‘bout you folks, but that just gives me warm fuzzies and little tingles all over. This strategic moooove could turn the season around, fill those stadium seats and fill those hungry bellies too. So don’t tell me Braves management isn’t serious this season. Maybe with the additional revenue from the grotesque and stale chopping bovine looming obnoxiously over the stadium we can afford a new starting pitcher.

Then again, pitchers cost big money and big cows make money, so it’s a management no-brainer.

Will the giant bovine intimidate opposing teams or will Atlanta become the butt of cow jokes? Methinks the latter. Will the bovine image become synonymous with the Ted? Would Ted prefer a buffalo? Will the cow tear a labrum or tendon on the first outing? Pull a hammy during installation? Is this a Tojan Cow? This is big… really, really big. Could change everything. Stay tuned…

Morning, all. I personally think it’s a good idea. It’ll lend some personality to the stadium, and perhaps be silly enough to temper some of the ugly losses we are likely to continue to endure. Who could be too awful mad leaving the stadium when the last thing you see is a giant cow? Maybe it’ll even garner us some media attention, no small feat when New York and Boston are still playing. Any publicity is good publicity.

Ted’s Excellent Adventure At The Cow Palace

With so many arms out and our pen being bled,

yet it’s a big chop-cow that arrives at the Ted.

Nothing against bovines, it’s not what we need,

or do the owners think fans just show up to feed?

This stadium icon will be profitable I’m sure,

perhaps it’s a Disney crowd they wish to lure.

Maybe the Ted will be renamed Cow Palace,

other teams will surely nickname with malice.

For an ad cow whose arm bends Ted’ll make room,

promoting chicken sammiches, business will boom.

Maybe fans will join in the cow’s tomahawk chop,

or could just be homers that makes his arm drop.

Braves really need a closer to slam the door shut,

or a true ace starter who’s healthy and not in a rut,

but now we get a big fat cow while teams get ahead,

instead of post-season we’re sold poultry instead.

Actually I like Chick-filet… and I used to like their Cow and ‘Eat Mor Chiken’ ad campaign, but after seeing the print, TV ads and billboards about 8 million times over twenty years I’m sick of it. It’s old… very, very old.

Also don’t think a big, silly, chopping moo is the right kind of image to put over the Ted, regardless of sponsor or stadium profitability. Is nothing sacred? There is nothing about a cow that is fierce, competitive or mean. The opposite is true. May as well have a pig. Both tend to get slaughtered.

Now, a bull might be OK as far as that goes, but would go better over a basketball arena in, say… Chicago. A bucking stallion might be… no, that belongs in Denver. How about a 40 foot American Indian with war headdress and tomahawk. Whoops, that might offend… not PC enough.

For now, I’d let the sponsor have the boards and the restaurants and other sponsor locations and perks… just no cow. Please… put the cow on top of a milk truck or something.

Notes from last night’s Richmond game…

GAME 1: Rarely will you see a center fielder retreat a few steps on a well-hit fly ball and stop. A left fielder or a right fielder maybe, but not a center fielder because of the ample distance to the fence.

Which might give you an idea of how far Eldred crushed his first home run.

Eldred hammered what had to be one of the farthest balls hit at The Diamond. R-Braves center fielder Josh Anderson took a few steps back, stopped and watched as Eldred’s ball not only cleared the fence but cleared the dark green batter’s eye.

The fence in center is 402 feet from home plate. The batter’s eye is about 25 feet high.

Eldred, who is 6-5, 275 pounds and goes by “Big Country,” is known for his power and strikeout totals (one every 3.2 at-bats during his career). He leads the International League in home runs (24) and RBI (67).

The 27-year-old Eldred hit 38 homers in 2004 and 40 in ’05, when he became only the third player to hit 10 or more home runs at three levels (Erubiel Durazo in 1999, Adam Dunn in 2001). He was released by Pittsburgh after last season and signed as a free agent by the Chicago White Sox.

Wes Whisler and Mike MacDougal combined on a four-hit shutout. Richmond has been blanked seven times this season.

EARLY EXIT: R-Braves third baseman Wes Timmons had to leave Game 2 after injuring his left ankle in the first inning. He lined a RBI single down the right-field line, took an aggressive turn toward second base, then put on the brakes. He clutched his left ankle after returning to the bag and eventually limped to the dugout.

    Expert: Clemens could be indicted
    Posted: Saturday June 14, 2008 08:30AM ET
The Justice Department has kept the details of its Roger Clemens investigation quiet, but lawyers who have been following the case said the feds probably already have more than enough evidence to indict Clemens on perjury charges. The evidence that has been public – testimony from Andy Pettitte and Brian McNamee, as well as the bloody gauze pads, used syringes and steroid vials McNamee turned over to authorities in January could be used against Clemens – should be sufficient for the Washington, D.C., prosecutors who are guiding the case to bring before a grand jury and ask for an indictment, said Golden Gate University law professor Peter Keane.

My Father would be 109. The first “Father’s Day” was in 1956. We could give him something made out of Popsicle sticks or something like that, but NOTHING store-bought. He said, “It’s just another scheme the merchants came up with to spend my money.” Think about it. How many gifts will be bought today with “Fathers” money? And that continued even when we would have been spending out money.

My ‘boy’ (strapping 23 year old) just left after coming over with a Dad’s Day card. A big ‘ol country boy breakfast was enjoyed and he’s off to hookup with buds.

Pappy, I guess I grew up at the end of the era you’re talking about. My dad got ties and other useless items. But we always, always hung out together on Father’s Day. Or at least until after church and lunch… then it was off to do whatever kids do.

Happy Father’s Day to all … no, we mustn’t forget the ladies … nor the kids … were it not for them, there wouldn’t be no daddies!

None better to do the lead post covering this day than Mister Gil … a man of experience and experiences … like Lamont Cranston, he knows!

Funny thing about Daddies, and Mommies too … you can disappoint them a million times … make them so mad they can’t see straight … but, regardless of any contrary protestations, methinks they’ll always love you and find ways to be proud, regardless of your flaws, missteps and misdeeds … doggone if they don’t stand up for you … and beside you, when others walk away.

Their’s is hard work and methinks they’re underpaid!

Let them know that you love them and that you care … today and every day! Find ways to be proud, regardless of their flaws, missteps and misdeeds … stand up for them … and beside them, when others walk away.

Methinks you don’t really know what you’ve got … until you lose it. I miss them; Mama and Daddy … goodness how I miss them … and though I told them, perhaps 10,000 times, how much I loved them … 10 million times would not have been enough … goodness how I miss them, today and every day.

I’ve often said that if you replaced all the Commandments with “Do only those things which will make your parents and children proud” … the good Lord would, as Leonard Slye might say, take a liking to you!

    … and others will too.

    God Bless!

Well folks, a tad bit disappointed with the team tonight but not too much. Campillo deserved a better fate. It’s tough for a pitcher to win without support from the offense.

Bear… Yes, the naysayers in Washington want the typical Washington solution, “Got a problem? Throw money at it….” The real problem with the Nats is a lack of reliable relief pitching. Sound familiar?

Tiger Woods’ display of his temper tantrum on the 18th hole today reminds me of why I don’t like him. He is a great golfer but not a great person. Like too many, everything is fine as long as things are working for him, other golfers need to learn how to use his lack of humility against him. He would be a guy that would not last 5 minutes on a baseball team because he could not handle the ridicule from the fans when he failed.

    I’m rooting for Rocco today….

And thanks Bob, I miss my own Dad greatly… He will always be remembered as long as I am alive as he was a wonderful role model for which any son could be proud.

The Richmond Braves beat the Charlotte Knights 3-1 Sunday at The Diamond. Chuck James pitched seven scoreless innings, running his string of consecutive scoreless innings to 14, to lead the Braves.

Richmond picked up all the offense they would need in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Jason Perry. The Braves added a run in the fifth when a sacrifice fly by Josh Anderson cashed in a leadoff triple by Brent Lillibridge. The Knights evaded a shutout in the eighth thanks to a solo home run by Jared Price.

James earned the win striking out 8 while lowering his ERA to 1.18. Mike Gonzales picked up a save. Charlie Haeger took the loss. Lillibridge had three hits for the Braves.

    From Peter Gammons…..

Sometime in the next month, Braves GM Frank Wren and Bobby Cox will decide whether or not they can stay within hailing distance of the Phillies, considering all their injuries. Wren plans to do similar due diligence to what Shapiro has initiated, and if the Braves are buried too far in the NL East, they will see if they can get more than they would with two draft picks. Agent Scott Boras is not likely to do a trade and sign deal, unless the Angels were to decide they could DH Casey Kotchman each day and were willing to deal right-handed pitcher Nick Adenhart, as the Braves need to start retooling their arms.

Shouldn’t we ask for Kotchman back??? We can’t trade Tex without getting a 1st baseman back, can we????

TRENTON, New Jersey – Amid growing concern over drug-resistant superbugs and nonhealing wounds that endanger diabetes patients, nature’s original antibiotic — honey — is making a comeback.

More than 4,000 years after Egyptians began applying honey to wounds, Derma Sciences Inc., a New Jersey company that makes medicated and other advanced wound care products, began selling the first honey-based dressing this fall after it was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Called Medihoney, it is made from a highly absorbent seaweed-based material, saturated with manuka honey, a particularly potent type that experts say kills germs and speeds healing. Also called Leptospermum honey, manuka honey comes from hives of bees that collect nectar from manuka and jelly bushes in Australia and New Zealand.

It goes on from there, didn’t want to post the whole long thing…

Now if Chipper manages to hit .400 for the whole season??? he HAS to be the MVP! If he hits .370 for the year, and we are in 3rd place, then It’s likely the MVP is Utley…

Just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in. After reading Berigan’s post I guess I’m doing better than I thought. No, actually I just dropped in to have a sanity break… way too many meetings and clients and such. Three days of the same coming.

Real nice to see Lew visiting Stuffville. Yes, seaweed and honey (or sugar) are ancient natural healing substances used for wound care and reducing bacterial contamination… these were both used on Mrs. Guy after her surgery and both worked well. Must be the right kind purchased from the proper source of course, but they can work wonders.

Hopefully Lew will set up an art gallery on Main Street in that vacant building between Klobber’s Saloon and Raisins music store, just down from Hillbilly’s Trophy Room and taxidermy shop. FBG has a cute little bakery nearby called The Red Velvet. Many cakes, pies, cupcakes and cookies found there.

Across the street, CL has her eclectic little graphic design, genealogy and birdhouse boutique. Next to that, Bear runs his late-night vintage movie house. Right at the corner of Main and Richmond Streets, you’ll find Gil’s auto and boat repair shop called Mechanicsville. Bob’s hot tub and computer repair place is just down the way on the corner of Main and Acme Avenue.

Next to the Maytag lint filter repair station, Salty has his sundries and spice shop, named Tiger Paw Unlimited. Then, toward the end of Main there’s the three-story building that houses the writing studios that Scribe, Grinch and JB share. They each have their own story and they’re sticking to it.

On the corner of Main and Barrister Streets you’ll find the law firm of Willy, Wally & Pappy, LLC. Seems all is well in this sometimes sleepy and occasionally rambunctious little piece of paradise tucked in the corner of Braves Nation called Stuffville. Many fine denizens here. There are more vacant little places for new residents or returning denizens. Plenty of room here.

Wish I could stay and run this further into the grou… uh, discuss Stuffville even further but must get back after it. I’ll be passing through again… as am able.

Three little old ladies went to a baseball game and were enjoying it immensely. Especially since they had snuck in a bottle of Jack Daniels and had been mixing it liberally with their sodas.

But then, they realized that the bottle was about empty.

Based on the information given, what inning is it and how many players are on base?

As much as I detest the Mutts and everything Mutt, I think Willie was the scapegoat for the NY press. Omar took the easy way out, when Omar himself is mostly to blame for this mess. He’s the one who assembled a roseter of old, overpaid, injury-plagued players who never gelled as a team. David Wright became the only consistent player on that fractured team. Even Jose Reyes wilted after sustaining some criticism from within. Say what you will about Bobby, but his clubhouse is never divided.

Gonzalez to be activated tomorrow…and likely the closer!!! I guess Ridgeway will go back down, but that still leaves us with 3 lefties, which is just fine with me! I am sure Bobby is sleeping well knowing I approve! 😛

Ber, good idea with Anderson. Frenchy definitely needs some time off. I am thoroughly convinced that he has an injury in his leg/knee/ankle/foot that is preventing him from running hard. He has not looked right all season to me. That could also be exacerbating his issues in the batters box too.

However, I don’t think it is feasible to call Anderson up for a game. Someone would have to be sent down (or DL’d). In the case of someone being sent down, they could not be recalled for either 10 or 15 games (I forget which exactly) and of course in the case of the DL, it’s minimum 15 games.

FBG, I saw that Mac is trailing Soto by something like 500k votes. It’s a shame because their numbers are very similar. Too bad Braves Nation isn’t as passionate as the Cubs.

As for Huddy, I don’t recall hearing anything about it but I wasn’t listening closely. I tend to tune Chip Caray out a lot………

Did he get dehydrated in Anaheim? I can’t recall. I know that the relative humidity levels are much lower than he is regularly accustomed to so it can be easy to become dehydrated there. SPeaking from personal experience, it can be tough to breath in low humidity if you’re not used to it and because the air seems so crisp you don’t realize that you need to drink more fluids. He certainly could have been suffering from the effects of that though, especially in Dallas where it was pretty hot and I think it was pretty humid too.

Chris, good point about the length of time someone can or cannot be recalled…I still am amazed that Devine was called up something like 8 times last year….

I know someone on TV mentioned a few weeks back how Frenchy’s ankles have been bothering him, and he clearly is not the same fielder he was before…did you see he and Blanco last night??? He just didn’t seem to be able to cut his path…he could only run straight, and it allowed a ball to go to the wall, and they nearly ran into each other….

I forgot, I thought it was at home that Huddy had the dehydration issue, which means it was the start he made on the 6th, not the one in Chicago…and if it was the one 2 starts ago, why did Pete even bring it up???? I am…..confuzzled!

They just showed Josh Hamilton’s homer….I don’t know I have ever seen anyone hit the ball the way he does….I barely see the bat, doesn’t look like good contact, and it’s hit a mile!!!! Really looks like the ball has been hit off the end of the bat when he hits a homer to the opposite field……74-76 rbis??? Will he get to 100 before the all star break??? Ber, I saw that play last night. Stankoeur and Blanco looked like a couple of ten year olds chasing that ball down. Pretty pathetic. I don’t know what’s wrong with him but he needs time to heal. He’s NOT helping the team right now. Not offensively and not in the field. I can’t count how many times a ball has fallen right in front of him.

Josh Hamilton played in Charleston back in 2000 and for a short time in 2001 on a rehab assignment. Aside from being one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, the dude is an absolute monster. He could rake from corner to corner. In fact, in the ’00 All Star game, he had two triples. One went in the left field corner, the other to the right field corner. We would find BP balls outside of the stadium that easily went 500 feet and the way the stadium is situated, it sits on a river and a stiff breeze almost always blows in towards the plate. Baseball America has rated it one of the five or six toughest parks for hitters in the minors.

I am so happy that he has conquered his demons and realized the tremendous potential that he was blessed with. There was a stretch of about five years that he was the biggest joke in baseball.

Mr. Hyde showed up in Texas again last night. Dr Jekyll pitches better. Wonder if Roger knows why? It’s a mystery to be solved. Fran continues to look lost, dazed, off kilter, flummoxed, no zip, no zap, no bip or bap. Is Huddy dehydrated again? Maybe too many innings and too many stretches between sips of water from Braves hitters. Maybe Huddy needs to visit the water cooler, have a sip and then take a bat to it. Could that wake up the team?

Fran should be causing a flap but he flipping keeps getting trotted out there every day, every night, every game, every inning. Is Trot Nixon available? Is Fran going for a new Iron Man record or is his name written in ink in the lineup card? Can Bobby see right field from the dugout?

Time for an about face with Fran. Could Fran have a fear of getting hit in the face again? Could Bobby be saving face by not taking him out? Time to face facts and face up to the truth or we could face more wasted at bat’s and more mediocre play. Maybe Fran needs some face time with those on the bench. A dual purpose served… he could get many pointers there and rest the ankle. Is Rick Ankeil available?

Does Fran still josh around on the golf course? Is Josh Anderson available? Is there a cot for Fran to rest on between innings? Is Kotsay available? Fran used to be Johnny on the spot with two outs or two strikes. Is Johnny Damon available? There is no justification for playing Fran every day. Is David Justice available?

Can Bobby see right field from the dugout? Do Bobby and TP watch Fran’s AB’s? Does the team doctor have an opinion about anything yet or do rookie doctors just agree with the boss and get along, get along? Does Bobby get the games on Peachtree? So many questions and mysteries to solve and too little time to think about it now.

That’s interesting Gil, talk of a fire sale….makes some sense. Pitching wise, they are in less trouble than hitting…well, let me say from a starting prospective at least. If they lose Odalis Perez to free agency, they will have more issues next year. Most likely Delgado is gone, they have to keep Beltran though, don’t they???

There could be quite a battle for Tex between the two NY teams, except….I wonder if there is any chance the Yankees keep Giambi??? Sure, he’s old, but he’s hitting .268 now, with 17 homers, and 40 RBI’s. His OBP is .403.
Meanwhile, Tex is hitting .269 10 homers 50 RBI’s and has a .359 OBP. And Giambi doesn’t have a .400 hitter in front of him either….Of course, with their money they could just make Giambi the DH, and have Tex play 1st.

Just looking around yahoo.com’s stats….Tex hit .357 last year against lefties…this year he’s hitting .219!!!!

SG, you are on a roll! (pumpernickel??? )

I know we are all armchair managers, easier to make choices from in front of a tv or computer screen….Bobby’s biggest strength (Next to never giving up) is being patient. He overdid it a few years back…remember that terrible start Frenchy got off to in 2006? Just looked it up, .216 in April. He still wouldn’t give him a day off…I think it was either then, or later in the year that when Bobby was asked if he should give Jeff a day off, he said…”I can’t imagine him not coming into the clubhouse bouncing off the walls with energy” or something like that…don’t quote me! 😉

What the bleep does that have to do with anything??? You may have noticed I am not calling him stankcoeur, or Fran…( You guys can, and I am sure you all are glad to have my permission!) It isn’t his fault!!! The manager should know better! Frenchy said he’d never pull himself out of the lineup, and I am sure Bobby loves that….but, it isn’t good for the team right now….

Here’s what I don’t get. Clearly it helped Jurrjens to sprain his ankle and miss a start. His blisters healed. McCann said as much that it was a good thing it happened when it did. So, Jurrjens kept going out and basically hurting the team(Really not his fault-the Manager should see blisters on a pitcher’s fingers and say rest ’em for a start) but that’s ok. Bobby said something about Jurrjens and someone else, always going to the post…he said it with admiration. Swell…I’d rather someone be TOLD they are not going to play, than beg to come out since they have a slight sunburn from playing golf all afternoon….but why hurt the team longterm forcing the “best” players to play all the time??? Why does Bobby act like he only has 3-4 guys in the bullpen and run them out there every game we have a lead, even if it’s 7-0 like the other night??? Frenchy is no better than Blanco right now…. but, we can’t risk it….this might be the night Frenchy breaks out! No…it isn’t!!! He may get lucky and run into a pitch or two one night, but he is sore, his brain is fuzzy from never getting a night off(remember the slumps Ripken used to suffer thru? A night off would have helped his team, IMHO, but the record had to be broken)

If I was Bobby, if I felt I just couldn’t spare him this week, I’d give him the day off a week from today(The next off day is a week from Thursday) so he’d have 2 whole days off…what he used to do with McCann. Then see what happens…if that didn’t work, sit him 2-3 games….it’s not like we can’t afford to miss a guy hitting. 250 with no power….

Serious computer threat, posted on WorldStart.com:

    “New Ransomware on the Loose

I’m sorry to be the one to break this to you, but I have some bad news on the security front today. Do you remember a few months ago when I wrote about ransomware? Ransomware is basically a virus that takes over your computer and demands you to pay the creator of the virus for a code that will bring your data back. Most of the time, viruses like that are more bark than bite. They’re usually fixed rather quickly by antivirus companies that figure out the codes needed to unlock your data. Well, at least that was the case up until now.

Just last week, researchers at Kaspersky found a new ransomware virus that is on the loose and is very dangerous. The virus is called Gpcode.ak and it’s a type of ransomware that has no fix as of yet. Gpcode.ak will infect your computer and encrypt all of your personal files with a 1024 bit security key. Kaspersky has said that it would take a supercomputer to figure out the code for this one.

People who are infected with Gpcode.ak will see a screen that says something like this: “Your files are encrypted with a RSA-1024 algorithm. To recover your files, you need to buy our decryptor. To buy our decrypting tool, contact us at ********@yahoo.com.”

As I mentioned above, there is currently no fix for this virus, but if your computer becomes infected with it, you can help! Kaspersky is asking for anyone infected with the virus to contact them immediately. That way, they can use your experience to try and find a solution for this nasty virus.

Now, if you become infected, Kaspersky is asking you to do the following:

Contact the Kaspersky Lab using another computer connected to the Internet. Do not restart or power down the potentially infected machine.

E-mail Kaspersky at stopgpcode@kaspersky.com with the following information included:

    Date and time of infection.
Everything done on the computer in the five minutes before the machine was infected, including programs executed and Web sites visited.
The Kaspersky Lab will then try to recover any encrypted data.

Kaspersky analysts are continuing to analyze the virus code in search of a way to decrypt the files without having the private key. Until a solution is found, it’s recommended that your anti-malware programs are set to their maximum security and that extra care is taken while browsing the Internet and reading your e-mail.”
