With Garret Anderson, I really think the Braves are in a much better position to make their presence felt during the season than they would have been with Griffey. Thank goodness, he went back to Seattle!
Garret has accumulated some good-looking numbers in his years with the Angles. According to CBSSportsWire.com:
A three-time All-Star, Anderson had spent his entire career with the Angels and holds several franchise records, including games played (2,013), runs scored (1,024), hits (2,368), doubles (489), total bases (3,743) and RBI (1,292). He ranks second in home runs (272) and career batting average (.296).
Anderson helped the Angels win the World Series in 2002, hitting .300 with two homers and 13 RBI in the postseason. Los Angeles declined to pick up his $14 million option after last season, instead paying a $3 million buyout.
I know next to nothing about Anderson, but this comment posted by someone on another blog says a lot, I think:
I can still remember seeing Garret play as a rookie for the Angels and being in amazement on how talented, humble, and professional this young man was. How was I to know that 15 years later we would be saying the same things about him. Braves fans should be ecstatic. He has so much more left in the tank then Jr and could really make a huge impact on the Braves title hopes for 2009. I have never been a Braves fan but I will be watching their box scores this season and pulling for them strictly based on their acquisition of Anderson. He plays the game the way it was meant to be played. He is one of those few players that would be successful regardless of the time period he played in.
I know the Braves are high on character and it sure sounds good to me!
I truly hope Francoeur can reverse his fortunes of last year – and I think he will. Chipper has given him pretty high marks this spring and he’s usually honest in his comments.
Centerfield? Hmmm. Anderson? Blanco? Schafer?
Don’t know about Blanco. I think Schafer will probably be given a little more time in the minors to refine his craft. So that leaves Anderson. (Josh, that is.)
Anderson-Anderson-Francoeur? Not bad. We’ll just have to see how that one comes out of the wash.

Now that LF has apparently been settled, (note the use of the word apparently given the off-season we have witnessed), focus immediately shifts to CF. I think it’s Anderson’s job to lose over Blanco, but Schafer will be given every opportunity to prove he belongs. And no way he stays in the bigs unless he wins the job outright as the everyday starter.
So to me, that’s the key battle of the spring. It’s really the only battle of the spring. They can say the 5th starter spot is open for competition, but it’s Glav’s unless his arm falls off.
So now after a winter of discontent, and a hot stove season of uncertainty, the lineup is pretty much nailed down.
Now batting order… ❓

Quick story I heard Leo spin this morning after being asked about pitchers’ “roles”:
First he said every pitcher should consider that his “role” is to get outs. Period.
He told of a guy that the Braves picked up mid-season from KC in 1990 named Rick Luecken. Leo said the team had just gotten back to the Stadium after a long road trip that concluded in SF. It was about 3:00am and everyone was dog tired from the long trip and longer flight. The team baggage had not yet arrived at the Stadium, so the irritation level was elevated. As the tired team was very impatiently waiting, Luecken approached Leo and asked him, “What is my role here?” Leo said, “What? Not tonight. I’m tired.” Luecken pressed and said, “I gotta know. What’s my role with the Braves?” Leo said, “Go around the corner and ask #6 (Bobby).” A few minutes later, Luecken walked past Leo to his locker and toward the door without his bags which had not yet arrived. Leo stopped him and said, “You talk to Bobby?” Luecken said, “Yeah.” Leo said, “So… what’d he say?”
“He said I probably wouldn’t get any more innings and might be off the 40-man roster in September.” (pause) “Leo, what should I do?”
“Work your butt off, make better pitches and forget about your role.”

I have listened to and read comments from several baseball people – former coaches, former players, former execs – on various outlets today regarding the GA acquisition. They all think the Braves made a stellar move. I guess we on the east coast don’t know enough about this low key guy, but I have heard so many accolades today that I am beginning to get a little excited about the team again.
And those accolades aren’t confined to his baseball skills either. He is a very high character guy who will be a positive influence on the youngsters. Also, he was supposedly Kotchman’s mentor on the Angels. I forgot about that connection. Maybe improving two positions offensively with just one signing. Now that’s efficient management! 😀

A little home Stuff:
My hometown Jefferson Dragons one their 9th straight traditional state wrestling championship this weekend. They moved up from class A to class AA this season, but the change in classification did not result in a change in the outcome. Jefferson is widely regarded as one of the best programs in the state, regardless of classification. My own son is in the pipeline, though he still has alot of work to do.
9 straight titles is quite an accomplishment. I am proud of all of the boys who work very hard, many year round, to be the best.

I am listening to 680theFan who has their talkers at Disney this week. They reported that earlier, Bobby pulled Diaz off to the side and had a 1 on 1 chat with him. They could not hear what Bobby said, but Diaz was heard to tell Bobby, “Skip, I’ll do whatever you need me to do.”
Great attitude from Matty. Nice touch by Bobby to talk to Matt personally.

One reason I like Matt Diaz is he knows what his role is, (see, I read the whole blog) 🙂 .. but back to Diaz. He is just one of those players who a manager loves to have around. You never hear of him complain, never says, it’s not my job. Honestly, if Bobby ask him to wash the towels and dry the uniforms he would do so with a smile.
He knows the score and he will wait for an opportunity to prove he is a valuable part of the team. After all, the Braves rescued him from the Royals.

GarrettOh, just one t at the end??? Garret is a 2nd half player, which is a bit like Tex, but all things being equal, isn’t it what you would rather have if a guy doesn’t hit the cover off the ball all year long???Last 3 years, .267 pre all star break, .313 after.
I couldn’t remember if it was 2006 or 2007, that he absolutely tore the cover off the ball the 2nd half (it was 2007-I just looked) he was forever on Baseball tonight getting a big hit. In the first half, in 151 AB’s(He is going to miss games, just like Chipper) 3 Hr’s 15 RBI’s and .285 b.a. I think their were rumors that he was washed up. 2nd half??? 266 A.B.’s 13 HR’s 65 RBI’s and a .305 BA.
He hasn’t played more than 142 games in a year since 2003, which means we are going to really need a strong 4th outfielder, aren’t we???
It’s funny, from an on base percentage viewpoint, Blanco is our “best” outfielder. .366 OBP. Josh Anderson, .338 OBP Garret had a .329 OBP.( Blanco had 74 walks, Garret, only 29!!!) Frenchy .294 OBP, and Matt Diaz had a .264 OBP!!! See, someone is even worse than Frenchy at getting on base! 😛
I am not saying he should be a starter, and I think OBP is overblown in this day and age… but…he can play all 3 positions in the outfield, which Diaz can’t, Garret can’t at this point…it’s just weird there is no talk of him having much of a chance in this outfield, is there??? We might want to have 5 outfielders this year. Well, Norton can always start….though I’d rather not see him left….

I think Norton stays. Aside from the fact that they’re giving him $1m plus this year (I think) he can play several positions and he hit very well off the bench last year. His overall numbers weren’t good but he was over used because of all the injuries this year.
I also agree with you on G Anderson. I’ve always felt that good clubhouse chemistry and solid citizens were overlooked. Just ask the Dallas Cowboys teams of the last few years. So much talent; so many headcases.

BTW folks. I saw a very good sign today. This morning when I woke up I looked out back towards my birdfeeders/birdbaths and saw a robin and quite a number of goldfinches. Neither species is native to this area. The only time we see them is during migration. SPRING IS ON THE WAY!!! YIPPEEEEEEE!!

Hi, Chris! Doing very well for just 20 days away from surgery. Well enough to feel impatient, but not well enough to do anything. Doing my ‘exercise’ – which consists of taking the sling off for :10 and letting my arm mostly ‘hang.’ Believe it or not, that’s tiring to those muscles! I appreciate what the pitchers go through more and more! I’m looking forward to being able to brush my hair or pick up a cup of coffee – much less throw a baseball x mph!
The robins have been here all winter. Pigs they are, too! Lots of finches. There’s a flock of maybe 60 or so that are here every day – scarfing down that seed! 😆 Blue Jays, Northern Flickers, several kinds of woodpecker, cardinals, titmouses, chickadees; can’t remember them all. I do love to watch them!
I think I saw a group of red-winged blackbirds recently. Didn’t get a real close look. Was trying to drive with one hand, watch traffic, etc – but I thought I saw a flash of red on one of them. They would be just passing through.
The trees and bushes are budding out. Daffodils and hyacinths are up. Camelias are in full bloom. And it’s going down into the 20s tonight….. Yep. It’s spring!

We have plenty of birds here year-round too. My favorites are the bluebirds and I was very encouraged that a pair was scouting a house that I built last winter but was stolen by chickadees. Don’t know why but I do love bluebirds. Always lots of cardinals, mockingbirds, bluejays, various sparrows and wrens here all year. The “junk” birds will be through soon too unfortunately. I don’t have much love for the grackles and starlings as they tend to be big hogs at the feed bowl but you’ve got to take the good with the bad. Many woodpeckers stop by including the pileated woodpecker. If you’ve never seen one, that is one big, loud bird!

Note on Norton:
He really won’t count as the “5th” outfielder so much as the backup 1B. It’s just that he could play LF if pressed into duty. With the addition of a regular LF, he won’t play there except through injury. His presence is more for a bat off the bench in the 8th or 9th inning.

Note: Infante can play CF/LF if needed. Prado could be traded in ST. Infante plays all of the same positions except 1B, where Norton backs up. Norton is relatively ham handed at times, but his bat is very valuable off the bench. I suppose it is a good problem to have.

Wow! Good for Jason Schmidt! Successfully returning from shoulder labrum surgery is rare. During some of my research prior to my thing, I read that only ONE pitcher out of many has ever been able to do it – and I’ve forgotten his name. (I didn’t recognize it when I read it, to be honest.) I wish Jason well!

I understand he had an outstanding ‘pen session, then felt the strain in his first couple of pitches of BP. Sucks for him. At least it’s early in camp.

CL, I have always like ol’ Tommy Lasorda. Always positive, and what he was able to do with the Dodgers in 1988(It was 1988, right?) against the steroid enraged A’s, amazing! I still remember Bobby Costas saying the Dodgers might have had the weakest offense of any team ever in the WS, and he was right!
I bought a book of his, it’s called, I Live for This! Got it for a buck at Barnes and Noble. Older book I think. Someday, I shall crack it open and attempt to read it! 😛

Yes, I like this team too. It has all the makings of a real National League team… Good pitching and timely hitting, power ally guys who will hit the occasional homerun but don’t depend on the big fly… First to third (well, except for McCann) but everyone else… less station to station running.
I think the Braves are going to surprise some people.
Just as a footnote. That is exactly they type of team the Braves had in Richmond the last two years. Always guys on base, always moving them over getting them in. Everytime you looked up at the score board you would see curly numbers. Lots of at bats because they would be turning over the line-up.
Well, until they called up most of the pitching staff and half the starters… Then became business as usual. CELLER DWELLERS…..

I worry though, I read Javy Vasquez is pitching in the WBC, and even made a few starts in winter ball to stay “sharp”
I really wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see him have a tired arm in April or May, and we will be glad to have Morton and Jorge Campillo around.

Glavine technically has not been added to the roster, and won’t be until he arrives in camp in about a week. So Frank has a week to most likely work out a deal to send an outfielder (BJones?) somewhere. Don’t you all imagine GA negates BJones now? Oh well… that’s how I see it, anyway. I can see the ever popular PTBNL in our future.

There are a lot of teams looking for the type of talent the Braves have accumulated of late. Trouble is those same teams may not have players of similar talent to trade to Atlanta. So, what do the Braves need? What’s out there right now? A lot of teams are looking to get cheaper. Except maybe the Yankees and the Red Sox.

CL, I agree with FBG. Chipper is the face of the Braves. He’s the longest tenured player, home grown, and a likely HOF’er.
I like this team too. With the way the game has been going the last few years it appears that there will be fewer homers in the future. It’s like we’re going back to 1970’s baseball. I’d rather have a lineup that can consistently get on base than hit the occaissional homer. Of course, some speed would help, especially at the top of the order. Perhaps that’s where Josh A becomes very helpful. Let’s just hope he can get his obp up.

And looks like Richmond is about to lose another sports team. The Renegades (ice hockey) announced this would be their last season. I may just buy the big high def TV an never go to another live event. Hockey is the one sport you have to attend live however to enjoy. It’s just to much going on to confine it to following the puck like they do on TV…

Some folks can do some awful things to an automobile.. Best thing someone could do for that Buick is leave it parked on the railroad track and have someone put it out of it’s misery…
Of course that is what I think the Auto makers have done to a lot of cars and trucks. They have become so gawd awful ugly no one but a blind hippie would want to be seen in one. Personally, I have too much pride to be seen in an ugly automobile.

My thoughts on Garret Anderson. He was a part of the 2002 World Series Champs, which I’ve always considered the most well-meshed, team-oriented club in my memory. That team was a close-knit family and it showed when they wiped out the Yanks in that ALDS. He should know a thing or two about team-concept and chemistry. Hope he brings it East with him.

Andy Marte cleared waivers today… what a strange saga.
He was ranked no worse than 14th among all prospects by Baseball America in 2004, 2005, and 2006. He, of course, was shipped to Boston for Edgar Renteria prior to the ’06 season. That turned out pretty good for the Braves in ’06 and ’07 before they parleyed Rent to the Tigers for Jurjjens. That turned out pretty good for the Braves in ’08.
Now Marte simply slips through waivers because nobody is willing to take a big league chance on him. Add him to the long list of big time Braves prospects that were traded high, performed low. Pretty sharp talent evaluators if you ask me…

Good morning Stuffville…. Well, less than 24 hours now before the misses and I shove off for Florida and other points south. I am going to take my laptop along but I don’t think I will have too much computer time available. My return plans are still in the generalized stage at this point. All will depend on how anxious Miss Josie is to return to the rat race.
My plan is to meander my way back home… I hope to get in at least one spring training game. I did not realize that spring break would be beginning now or I would have booked my cruise a week or two earlier.
Now baseball, I thought Schafer gave a good account of himself yesterday. Who knows, he might take Frency’s job away from him before it is all over… Listening to the radio accounts he only made one really bad decision and that was to dive for a ball that got by him and ended going for a triple for Laird..

No matter what I do to get rid of the stuff, doesn’t matter what I take, it becomes a major thing. Slept just a few hours yesterday afternoon, tried several times to sleep last night, just ain’t happenin’ Now my sinuses feel like someone took them out of my head, then put them back in, in a hurry. Motrin isn’t killing the pain yet. But not breathing well when laying down is the big deal.
I hope and pray it won’t get into my lungs somehow, and that I won’t be sick for 6-8 weeks like last year…twice….sigh….funny how when you are sick, it’s all you can think about….not too funny.

Dodgers make a new offer to Maniac. B, Hanson was pretty darn impressive. The kid, all 6’5″ of him, seems pretty mature for his age. He has a certain mound presence. He certainly doesn’t act like a rookie. (Just ask Tejada’s back!) 😯
And that slider… MERCY! It was wicked… he reminds me of a certain former Bravo slinger that had an imposing fastball and mean slider… without the lip. 😀

And tomorrow I see them live & in person! 😀 I’m hoping, praying, crossing my fingers that Mac will make the trip since he didn’t play today. I imagine Bobby wants him to catch KK & the other new guys as much as possible before he heads off to the WBC.

I am having a darned good day. Watched the Braves on TV, watching them in person tomorrow, seeing Stars On Ice Sun. & the announcement was made today that the 2011 Skating Natl. Championships will be in Greensboro, NC. I am so there, we hardly get any competitions in the South.

Just think, Garret Anderson will get 2.5 Mil from the braves, and Manny turned down 25 MIl!!! 37 RBI’s are the difference in their totals from last year. We all know who is the better hitter, but come on! If Anderson had played for the braves last year(especially if Chipper had been in front of him), with his BA with runners in scoring position, I am sure he would have driven in at least 110+RBI’s
Manny and Borass = mad, crazy stupid!!! Unless there is a mystery team in Japan willing to pay him 30 Mil a year, he’s going to get nothing, and sit at home. A real strong stand, everyone can understand! 🙄

You know, I would imagine alot of players around MLB put up with guys like Manny because for the most part, it is just “Manny being Manny”. But in this year’s economic climate, with guys like Abreu, GAnderson, Burrell, Dunn, etc. having to take the low 1-year deals they took (…remember when everyone was aghast at the $$$ Burrell signed for? WHo was the smart one..?), and the lefty relievers who are STILL looking for deals, his cred among his MLB brethren may slip dramatically.
I’ll tell ya… If I’m Wil Ohman, who has to sign a way-under-market deal just to pitch in ’09, and I face Manny who turned down $45MM, I’m aiming for the chin. Seriously.

After hearing and reading many of the pork products found in the “stimulus” package, a/k/a political cramdown bill, such as $17,500,000,000 (billions, folks) for 100 acres of New Energy Efficiency Industrial Zones in Puerto Rico – friggin’ Puerto Rico, I want to throw up.
How about this one? $99,600 for doorbells in a public housing project in Laurel, MS. Huh?
One more good ‘un. $150,000,000 (millions, guys) to improve track and land for little league parking. Little league parking! And guess where. Friggin’ Puerto Rico! Why?
This pork bill is so blatant that it almost flies over the radar because it is so over-the-top in terms of shear bloatedness.
We were told that we as a public would have 72 hours inspect the bill before our lawmakers were to vote on it. Then they produced an 1100 page bill, 8 inches thick, and told us there wasn’t time for inspection. They told us it was absolutely crucial that it be passed right away. No 72 hour time period – now. Do you think your lawmakers had time to read the whole 1100 pages? (Actually, if you think your lawmakers ever read 11 pages, your naive. They have “advisors” who “read” those things and “advise” them on how to vote.) No. It was crammed down our throats as “Do now, or die!” and the public cowered, bent over, and took it in the general assembly.
Do you think if we knew of the billions of our $$$ being poured into Puerto Rico we’d have let it happen so easily?
It reminds me of the car salesman who is trained to keep you on the lot and close the deal. Those salesmen are trained to be closers. They are shown the statistics that show the disparity between purchases made by potential buyers who don’t leave the lot as opposed to those who do leave to “sleep on it” and give it careful consideration. They play on your emotion rather than your reason. The numbers overwhelmingly favor keeping the buyer on the lot. That’s what these “car salesmen” did to us. They would not let you off the lot. They made your lawmakers vote on a bill with no chance to know anything about it other that it is “crucial” to the recovery of America. They created a sense of panic to increase the sense of urgency. They made us accept it on faith. Ha! Faith in what? Their ability? Their integrity? Again, I want to throw up.
These are career politicians making intricate financial decisions affecting long-range economic conditions who have absolutely zero education or training in finance or banking. These are manipulators who are borrowing more money than they can repay to “fix” a system that was broken by people who borrowed more money than they could repay. That makes sense, doesn’t it?
So, is too early to say I want change? We need change!!! That was the mantra last November. That should be the mantra now.
The sad fact is, that’s all many of us will be left with. A little bit of change. Pocket change.

Raisins, I liked your list although personally I would have put Clemens, Arod and Palmeiro above McGuire. McGuire certainly deserves to be there but Clemens has continually denied anything wrong and tried to deflect it (onto his wife, of all people) and generally been an embarrassment to baseball. Palmeiro deserves a higher slot because we know without any doubt that he lied. If he hadn’t gone all Bill Clinton on us and indignantly denied any wrongdoing I might feel different. ARod has done nothing but leave more unanswered questions and almost certainly didn’t tell the whole truth. That’s such a shame because if he had been truthful he could have salvaged his reputation.
Mcguire never tested positive (that we know of) and the only evidence against him is circumstantial. I don’t know that he ever denied using steroids because he wouldn’t talk about it to Congress and has been very, very quiet since then.

Klobber, I found Mcgwire’s head-in-the-sand attitude to be both offensive and insulting. His response was basically, “If I can get everyone to ignore it. It’ll go away.” He actually thought we’d simply want to talk about the future and not the past? It really hacked me off. Sosa would have made the list if I had listed 11 because of his sudden inability to speak English. I hate it when people try to play me for being some inferior ignorant fool.

I think it will be interesting to see how players from this era are view in the future. Much more will be known about the steroids era and the players involved as we go forward. Will those players that stayed clean be regarded in a higher light than their cheating brethren?
Think about it. Greg Maddux won 350+ games and played exclusively during the steroid era. Is that not a significantly greater accomplishment than a pitcher with similar stats that played during the “dead ball era”?
Fred McGriff hit 493 HR in his career. I don’t think that with the way players from his era are viewed that he would be considered HOF material. If, in say ten years, we learn that he never used, wouldn’t that elevate his status since he was competing against many pitchers that were using?

Raisins, I think there are a lot of guys like Murphy that have what used to be considered borderline HOF numbers but were overshadowed by guys that we now know were using PED’s. Let’s face it, Murphy, Dawson, and a ton of other guys’ numbers alone don’t stand up to the Palmeiro’s, Canseco’s, and Sosa’s. However, when viewed through the perspective that so many guys were using in this era, it will help make those borderliners more attractive to the BBWAA providing that they are never exposed for having cheated.

Berigan’s kickin’ it old schoolz today, with my 25 year old Darryl Porter edition glasses(Look him up, if you don’t recall them!) My fairly modern ones lost a nose pad last night. Not very comfortable with metal digging in to your nose. These old glasses will outlast me, but the 2 pair I have had since, well, arms have broken off, the metal part of the nose pad(that’s why I had to get pair number 3)
Sent my Pa out to get some new ones. Thought I might sleep all day. I didn’t know I’d wake up after 4 1/2 hours . 😕

I really lucked out. We got there early, just in time to watch them stretch. And there’s Mac right in front. Dad wanted to check out the other concession offerings so we stroll around late in the game & there’s Mac signing. Stepped up into the last section of bleachers to watch the end of the game & there’s Mac coming out in his civvies to head for the bus. He was everywhere!

V, you are probably right about the ground being too warm, though I have heard of heavy snow a day after a city was 60-70 degrees, but it would probably have to snow as hard as it rained this morning….
Even if it doesn’t stick(and it seems awfully warm to even snow) I would still just like to see a good ol’ snow shower. Makes the trees and grass so purty….

I remember late February, ’73 (sound like a grampa, huh?), Thursday afternoon it’s 70+. Friday afternoon, I leave school, my car’s covered in a shell of ice. I run an errand that evening and on my way home I apply the brakes and the car keeps going…straight, at least, until finally stopping. I open the car door and reach down to the road…ICE! It’s the last time I’m in a car for almost a week. The sleet starts in earnest that evening, continues until noon on Saturday, complete with thunder and lightning…feels like you’re being pelted with buckshot! Then the snow starts…and falls…and falls…and falls…for 12 hours. So…on top of 8 inches of pure ice/sleet, we get 8 to 10 inches of snow! Talk about insulated! No one went anywhere until the following Thursday…there were no snow plows.
By the way…this was Charleston, SC! 😯 It does happen!

An adventure, Salty! Weather can do the weirdest things!
Yeah, there have been a couple of times when a little strip along the coast got pounded with ice/snow and 100 miles inland it was about clear. This area got 18″ of snow one Christmas (1976) – or the couple of days before Christmas. Snowed steadily for 3 days and nights – and though it was beautiful to see – it caused a dire situation because we had no means of handling it. Buildings burned unattended, 4-wheelers transported patients and staff to the hospital, law enforcement was limited to 4-wheel drive (the very few they had).
After the snow stopped the temps plumeted to zero. Literally! That was the temp here Christmas morning. Lowest ever recorded. Actually it got scary because everyone was absolutely trapped in their homes or whereever they were when it got deep. (Firestation, hospital, etc.)
No thanks! That was enough! 🙂
And it wasn’t even forecast!

For those familiar with Charleston’s bridges, the enterprising folks pulled out their skis and headed for the Cooper River Bridges. They had to schlep up, but once there, they could ski the half-mile or so back down. Best slalom in the South, for a couple of days…until the police said ‘no mas!’! 😆
Of course, since the ’70’s, it’s been all global warming, all of the time! 🙄

Salty, glad to hear your Dad is doing okay. Is he still in the hospital or is he at home?
I remember that snow storm in 73 very well. We didn’t have power for about three days. The roads were covered with snow and ice and it was very treacherous. Thankfully my father drove a jeep at the time and his office at the hospital was in a trailer down on the corner of Calhoun Street and Gadsden (where the Ronald McDonald House is now). Because it was on the same grid as the hospital they never lost power so we stayed there. Obviously there were no beds but we had heat, a kitchen, and a shower so we were fine. I remember that storm because my birthday is in early February and I remember getting a badmitton set and playing in the yard with my mother. It must have been 70 that day. Not very long afterwards we had that terrible storm.
CL, we had a storm like the one you mentioned in 1989. It was memorable for many reasons. First, it was right after Hurricane Hugo, which was a life altering experience. I had moved near Jacksonville, FL and had planned to go home for our traditional Polish Christmas Eve dinner. A day or two before, it snowed. It was odd as the snow band stretched from Myrtle Beach or so down to St. Augustine, FL and only inland for 40 or 50 miles. Charleston got eight inches (an unfathomable amount of snow). The JAX area got about two (also unfathomable). It even snowed on the beach! Most of my friends there had never seen snow falling and they were like a bunch of kids playing in it. That was the first Christmas I ever spent away from my parents.
Snow is great for skiing and sledding. Not much else.

Still remember a story about a hot rodding president, that was forever involved in races, and even got a speeding ticket! I kept thinging while reading it, who??? Kennedy??? I was fortunate to meet Paul Harvey in 1983. I lived a year in Janesville, Wisconsin, and he was touring the plant where I worked. Nice guy…tall. I feel like I’ve heard his voice my whole life…very comforting in many respects. My grandfather always listened to him. Paul Harvey’s ‘The Rest of the Story’ were great history lessons…and an art in drawing the listener in…you didn’t want to miss a second of the episode. He will be missed…

Thanks, Salty! The print is small? On mine, it’s smaller in the ‘writing box’ but is larger when posted. Tell me what you’re seeing. I’ve tried it in IE and Firefox – both showed up pretty good.
The banner kinda came together a little piece at a time. I like it – I think…..
I like the larger avatars – one big reason why I settled on this particular format.

I rather liked Bobby, Hank, Pete and Skip on one side and Chipper, Mac and Francoeur on the other – sorta like earlier generations are passing on and leaving the legacy of the Braves to the younger ones now. If that makes any sense! 🙂
I like the tabs at the top now – makes navigation much easier!
One thing I don’t like is – the banner was sharp and clear when I uploaded it. But by the time it goes through the wordpress system, it loses that sharpness – and there’s nothing I can do about it. 😦
Overall, I hope y’all like it. If not, we can go back to what we had – or maybe think up something different.

Oh CL, please don’t say “once Chipper leaves”. I mean, intellectually I know that he won’t play forever but I’m not prepared for that day yet. Perhaps it will become Mac’s team and I guess I’d be good with that. We know he’s a good ball player and from what I know of him, he is a good man. Still.
I really hope they are able to extend him. How hard would it be to see him finish his career in another uniform?

Let me ask you all a question: After the performance that Mr. Andruw “Waddles” Jones put in the last two and a half years, does it really surprise anyone that he’s struggling? Yes, it’s early but still. He may be the oldest 31 year old on the planet.
Last note: I STILL hope that the Dodgers give ManRam nothing. Boras is a cancer on this game and can not reasonably expect the Dodgers to continue to bid against themselves. I hope the Dodgers walk away and let him sit his sorry “Manny being Manny” butt at home.
I kind of liked him before. Hard not to. I’ve always been a bit jealous of free spirits but at this point it is just ridiculous.

Wow! Quite a group! I had no idea that Todd was still skating! I always rooted for him. Ilia is getting up there a bit, too, isn’t he? Most of the others I remember from different competitions – except Robinson; don’t recall her at all.

Todd’s still going strong. Still the best spinner out there. I swear Ilia has not aged one bit. That seems to be the case with a lot of skaters & coaches ( who all used to be skaters). I have a theory that the cold preserves them.
Jenn is mostly there to round out the ladies I think. She won Canadian Natls. several times but nothing bigger.

Chris, I agree. I used to be amused by Manny but his behavior in recent seasons really turned me off. But who knows, maybe Planet Manny wants to spend a year meditating on the beach? Hard to say what’s going on under that hair.

About my bedtime! Snow is ‘supposed’ to start around midnight – and it’s 42 degrees outside. Forecast to be colder than an a witch’s heart tomorrow, though – high in the mid-30s with a strong 25-35 mph wind. Dropping into the low 20s the next two nights – warming back up to the low 70s by Thursday. Yep. Spring.

The Manny saga is quite sad, IMO. He’s clearly one of the best hitters of his generation. Unfortunately, I think the term “idiot-savant” best describes him.
In his defense, I’ll say that Scott Boras is a horrible influence on him. Manny would be in Florida at Red Sox camp right now were it not for Boras. Manny dumped his last agent during his last contract and picked up Boras. Unfortunately for Boras, he wasn’t going to get paid until he negotiated a new contract. It’s pretty easy to connect the dots to see what happened. Boras got in Manny’s ear and told him what to do. Sickening…….
BTW, I really liked Sasha Cohen in that Borat movie. That was absolutely hilarious!

B, I can only tell what appears to have fallen on my patio which looks like about 6″ or so. No official amount of snow has been reported for the Jefferson/Jackson County yet, mainly because our local “news” outlet is a smalltown newspaper inherited by a hack who couldn’t report a real news story if his life depended on it. The communities around us, who amazingly DO have those amounts reported this morning, are showing 6.5″ and 7″. According to the ajc, the heaviest snow fell in a swath east of Gwinnett County toward Athens and northward, which we lie directly in the middle of. So… one might deduce that we got 6″ or 7″. Maybe Sherlock Holmes will actually report a number next week sometime and I can confirm it.

FLB, we didn’t get 6-7 inches of slow(as I said above) We got about 2 inches on the grass, but it was just too warm here. Most of it has even melted off the roofs. HUGE flakes though, which were very cool.
In fact, as I was driving to the store, uphill, with slush/snow all over the road, wipers going like crazy, ice under blades, windows steaming up… I was starting to question that decision. Trunk had so much snow on it, (kept closing on me)I had to knock the snow off so I could keep it open long enough to fill trunk. I thought for sure we would get 3-4 inches, but it didn’t happen and was even raining a bit at the end.
We were supposed to get the most snow(south of the city) but surprise, surprise, the weather folks got it wrong. 😕

The last 10 players to agree to these one-year deals were right-handed pitchers Manny Acosta, Jeff Bennett, Blaine Boyer, Buddy Carlyle, Jorge Campillo, Charlie Morton and Peter Moylan; infielders Yunel Escobar and Martin Prado; and outfielder Gregor Blanco.

NEW YORK (AP) – Before he lied to her about steroids, Alex Rodriguez turned to Katie Couric for career advice.
On the “Late Show with David Letterman” Monday, Couric said she was speaking to Rodriguez frequently when he opted out of his contract in 2007, trying to convince him to do a “60 Minutes” interview.
At one point, Rodriguez called to ask her, “What team do you think I should play for?”
Letterman responded: “That should have told you he was on the juice, that he’s calling you.”
Rodriguez told Couric in the “60 Minutes” interview that he never took steroids, and it’s since been revealed that he had. Couric said Rodriguez both called and wrote a note to her recently to apologize.
If that above is true, he’s a worse numbskull than I ever thought!

Let’s see, 6 of the 7 years, 100 or more RBI’s(The year he missed it, drove in 99) played in all 162 games in his first year with the Astros, (32 HR’s 119 RBI’s .303 BA) last year, he was injured, only played in 115 games, still drove in 100 RBI’s and hit .314. Yeah, what a waste of money! 🙄
I know he’s talking down the road as much as anything, but you just don’t know how some people will hold up…he’s big, but not fat. So far, he’s done everything possible to help his team win.

Word today that yet another Barack Obama appointee has a little problem with taxes — a $10,000 problem.
Ron Kirk, the former mayor of Dallas who would be the White House chief trade representative if confirmed, didn’t pay taxes on some speaking fees he donated to his alma mater and he tried to write off the full $17,000 costs of his Dallas Mavericks season tickets.
Not sure if we have room here to list every other would-be Obama appointee who tU.S Trade Representative nominee Ron Kirk, the ex-mayor of Dallas, turns out to be the latest Barack Obama appointee to have back tax problemsurns out to have some tax problems. There was Timothy Geithner, who’s now Treasury Secretary in charge of the IRS.
But being as articulate as he is and so well-versed in handling other people’s money, he was deemed essential to the fight against the economic downturn and that’s worked out real well. Just look at the markets.
There was Tom Daschle, who was deemed essential to the effort to completely reform the nation’s health care system.
He owed something like $140G’s with interest and penalties because he got a free car and driver and some other stuff from a rich guy who paid him $1 million a year for advice (hopefully not tax advice) and Daschle forgot to mention it for a few years.

Stand in line if you’re going to bash folks who intentionally, or unintentionally don’t pay their taxes. The system is the worse joke on America. Scrap the code, get rid of the IRS, smash the cottage industry supported by the existence of both, and put in a ‘Fair Tax’. It’s a crying shame anyone, regardless their income level or lifestyle should ever have to pay someone to calculate what they owe…absolutely ridicuous.
Rather than worry about who short-changed the system, put the spotlight on capturing revenue from the ‘underground economy’. Instead of fretting over whether a tax cut is headed our way, recognize the many, many billions of dollars drained from the economy simply to support the presence of the ‘tax boondoggle’ present today.
Frankly, I’ve had it. I’ll do what little or much I can to rattle the cage of any gov’t official who thinks ‘status quo’ is progress. If ‘We the People’ demand our Voice be heard, then you’ll see change in your lifetime like you never imagined. If you don’t care to get on board, then zip your lips and toss away the key. The old saying has merit…if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem…choose your side!
How’s that for a rant! 😯 I am serious, though!

Right on, Salty! The tax system has become an entire industry. Even the IRS itself doesn’t know the code. Not so long ago, some group called the IRS and asked the same question of a number of agents. Got mixed answers.
I think the entire personnel of the US Gov’t needs to be scrapped – from top to bottom. Strict term limits. New pay scales, eliminate the fancy perks and special considerations in everything they get. Make them live as we have to.
No life-time retirement and medical care. Fund your own as we do.
The great majority of those people think they are royalty and these things are due to them.

Now Granderson seeking the advice of his mother and father, Curtis Sr., that’s not unusual. Normally, though, it’s seeking guidance pertaining to cars, houses, clothes or even food. At 27 and entering his fourth full season in Detroit, Granderson is one of the game’s true Renaissance men.
He represents Nike, Louisville Slugger and Rawlings, but lieu of endorsement fees, he’s directed each company instead to donate equipment to inner city youth baseball leagues in Illinois and Michigan.
“I don’t need the money,” said Granderson, who signed a six-year, $30.25 million contract extension last February and posted a career-high .365 on-base percentage with 22 homers and 66 RBI last summer. “And this way it will give kids in the inner city opportunities. One thing I always hear is that it’s so expensive to get the equipment.”
He moonlights as an ambassador for Major League Baseball International in the offseason and has traveled to South Africa, China, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Switzerland. He took both his father and mother with him to China, and his father to South Africa (his mother was still working at the time).

CL, I have long been a fan of Granderson but more for what he’s done on the field and the interviews of him that I’ve seen. He’s also done some post-season work on ESPN that was quite mpressive. Very sharp young man. I didn’t realize anything about his philanthropic ways but I am not surprised. He gets it. He doesn’t “need” the money but so many children can benefit from his generosity. Even if they never play professional ball, he’s giving children an opportunity to stay off the streets and learn what it means to be part of a team. Those are valuable lessons.
There has been so much said about the fact that the number of black major leaguers has been declining for a long time. Trust me, I am not a believer in Affirmative Action, but I am happy to see him take an interest in his race. More black athletes in baseball and less in football and basketball is a wonderful thing for the game, IMO.

Sutton said he’s talked to Hanson twice now, including Tuesday when Hanson told him he wasn’t happy with his curveball but he’d get it worked out.
“He kept it simple,” Sutton said. “He’s a quality young man. I’m impressed with the person. He’s a young man who understands him. A lot of pitchers, young and old, have a problem with their identity as a pitcher, they want to be somebody else.”

As expected, Anthony Lerew was placed on waivers to accomodate Glav’s addition to the 40-man roster.
Also as expected, Lerew cleared waivers and has accepted an assignment to AAA Gwinnett.

V, if someone claimed Lerew on Waivers, do they have to put him on their 40 man roster? Or could they just have him say tryout during spring training, see how he is doing?? Seems guys like him should be picked up by other teams, since so many teams claim to be short on pitching…

FBG, I’m with you on Manny. I used to like him. His antics were kind of funny. Borderline disrespectful to the game, but I did find the amusement in them. However, the way he made his way out of Boston was repugnant (blog first?). Then the way that he and Boras carried themselves this off-season has been laughable. There are so many Americans that are either unemployed or under employed and he’s holding out for top dollar. It really makes me upset. I hope he tanks in LA this year (he won’t) and stinks up the joint.

Yeah, he was entertaining when he was the goofy flake who just happened to be one of the best hitters in the game. Then Boras (Satan) entered the picture & everything changed. I don’t know if the weasel brings out the worst in his clients or if he plays some kind of head games to make them into his little money-grubbing puppets but they’re nearly all the same once he gets hold of them.

Don’t be so quick to blame Boras. Manny being Manny transcends just baseball. Folks may not like Boras, but he’s not ‘and idiot’, either. He can’t make Manny grasp the reality of the present economics, nor make him sign a deal…and he’s not stupid enough (twice I’ve said he’s not ‘and idiot’) to simply throw up his hands an walk away. He gets paid when Manny decides to put away his toys and come out and play nice with the rest of the neighborhood…which may or may not be anytime soon. Regardless where he signs, fans should boo him lustily the whole season…he’s earned it.

If someone had picked him up off waivers, yes, they would have to place him on their 40-man. That’s why it was a very good bet, as CL pointed out, with his 13.00+ ERA and health issues, that he’d easily pass through.

Salty, I do blame Boras at least partly for this fiasco. Were it not for him, Manny would likely still be a Red Sox and they may have won the WS last year.
The contract that Manny opted out of was negotiated by a different agent. Manny fired him and hired Boras. Boras was not going to get paid on either of the option years. I firmly believe that Boras got in his ear and told him that he could make more money by opting out and finding a new deal elsewhere. You know what? He was right. Of course, he had to sell his soul and destroy his reputation as a good teammate to do so, but that’s what happened.
Funny how greed works, isn’t it?

Greetings Stuffians… Ber, that 50 cents per minute… But, you folks are worth it.
Just checking in to find out how the Bravos are doing. Sounds as their is much excitement concerning the young pitchers the organization has accumulated.
I am blogging from the Lido deck of the ship and I can tell you, these folks are LOUD…. and French Canadian… Need I say more?
Anyway, only one more day at sea and then on to Sarasota. For the first time I am actually up at the blackjack tables. Perhaps just enough to cover the bar tab…
Anyway, I look forward to getting back in the groove, see you all soon…
