JEFFERSON, GA – As each day of this seemingly never-ending extended Spring Training continues to move forward at a pace rivaled only by the traffic on the I-285 perimeter highway around Atlanta at 5:00pm on any given weekday, I have a few random thoughts I’d like to share…

Be forewarned, though… random means random. No telling what may spill forth.

Isn’t it strange how we clamored all winter for Braves news items in anticipation of the coming new season, and have nearly disappeared in mid-Spring? That one’s hard to figure, except that we know what we have now, well sort of. I mean, the team is here, but not really. You can’t even really look at it these games as a barometer of the potential of team’s fortunes for 2009. The WBC has taken players from not just all over our roster, but everyone else’s as well. These games really don’t mean squat.

Our star 3B has been away, then injured. Our star catcher, who needs to be working with an entirely new pitching staff, has not been present either. Our only offseason offensive acquisition, long anticipated I might add, has been injured and out. We don’t know who our CF will be. It’s just been weird.

Yet, the promise of a new season is still here… knocking on the door like a child wanting to come into Mom and Dad’s bedroom at 2:00 in the morning. It’s a mixed blessing. You love them, but are just a tad resistant to their being there.

duhHey… if our knees bent in the other direction, what would chairs look like?

I like Jordan Schafer. I like Josh Anderson, too. I look at both of those kids and see many common qualities. Actually, I see kind of the same player – except Schafer does it just a little better. In my opinion, Jordan Schafer is Josh Anderson, and then some. Schafer will be a star. Anderson will be a… well he’ll be on the roster. He’ll be on somebody’s roster, anyway. It may not be in Atlanta though. I think Jordan Schafer is taking the job and running with it, so to speak.

So Jeff Francoeur went 42 AB’s into spring before taking his first K. I gotta say, he really has made some wholesale changes to his approach at the plate. He better… Jason Heyward wants to play with the big boys in a bad way. Jason Heyward IS a big boy… and a superior talent. Jeff better start thinking about Delta for more than just endorsements.

When flies land on the ceiling, do they fly upside down and stick, or do they fly rightside up and flip at the last second?
duh2

The new pitching staff is really something. Derek Lowe has been all that and a bag of chips. Javy Vazquez has something to prove, and judging by his performance in the evil WBC, he means to prove it. Jair Jurjjens is poised to have a real breakout season. Kenshin Kawakami may have the best pure “stuff” on the staff. TommyH almost makes you wish TommyG was at home in his Barc-O-Lounger. Yet, TommyG is throwing better at this stage of his spring than in many before. Teams are calling and inquiring about Buddy Carlyle, for goodness sake. Good problems to have if you ask me. I want to see it against whole rosters, though, before anointing them as anything.

Yunel, KJ, Kotch… three solid performing consistent youngsters that may fly under a lot of people’s radar, but they will carry this team this year. Mark it, archive it, do whatever you want with it. VOR says that Yunel, KJ and Kotch will all have very solid, very consistent, very classic Braves type years. Bobby Cox will heap his accolades on those three all season long.

My 6-year-old daughter wrote a little storyhmmmm called, “I Ran Out Of Ink.” I started reading it but it was only 2 pages long. I don’t know why she didn’t finish it…

I bet Chipper is wishing he had gotten that contract extension before going to Canada and getting hurt again. He was what, 0 for 10 with 6 K’s, then pulled a muscle? Don’t get me wrong, I love Chipper Jones, and I hope he never puts on another uniform, but it’s gotta be tough for Frank Wren to think about 3 more years of Chipper when he can’t even swing a bat right now. I’m just sayin’…

Speaking of Frank, can we all agree that he had a plan, stuck hard to his blueprint, and by early results, did a pretty darn good job of building this year’s club? The pitching, from starting to relieving, looks rock solid. The infield is going to be outstanding both defensively and offensively. They may not lead the league in homers, but they may lead the league in extra base hits. They may also lead the league in RBI as a collective. Don’t laugh at that one. There will be a lot of RBI opportunities with this lineup. As Gil has many times said, there were a lot of RBI opportunities last season; they just didn’t drive ‘em in. That won’t happen outta this group this year. I’ll take consistent gap-to-gap hitters every day over all-or-nothing bashers.

teethWhat are you really supposed to do with your umbrella when you get to your car? If you take it down real quick and try to get in, you get water all over the place from the umbrella. If you try to get some of the water off before you get in, you get soaked doing it. And where do you put it? Seat? Floorboard? These may sound like trivial questions to some, but if you’ve got people in your passenger seats, this can be a daunting task.

I can’t wait for opening night. Plain and simple… I can’t. This spring has been too weird and too long already. I want to see MY team, all of them, and I want to see games that matter. I want to see jersey numbers under 60. Heck, I even want to hear Don Sutton, and I can’t believe I just typed that.

Thanks for paying attention. Now you know a little of what goes on in my mind. It’s kinda like a BB in a shoebox – it just kinda rattles around until it falls out.

L8r…

Like being inside VOR’s head. Fun.

Just talked to Dad. He was really impressed by Boyer of all people. Chatting with Mom’s counterpart for the Northern facilities, he discovered that her sister has been with Delta for 40+ plus years & works the Braves’ charter flights. I need to make friends with this lady.

And you are right, what a long strange spring training. I actually forgot about G.A. being hurt…any news on that???
I actually wouldn’t be too sad to see him miss a few weeks and see both Schafer and Anderson in the lineup. Some teams do really well with 2 speedsters at the top.
Oh what am I saying, Bobby will have the rookie bat 8th, cuz he’s a rookie! 😕

Great musings Raisins, so many question, so few answers. Of course if we know all the answers ahead of time, we would not need to ask the question…..

An observation…. This afternoon I had to change out the box blade on my tractor for a scraper blade so I can repair some of the damage done to my road by the recent snowfall. Well, I’m whipped. I have come to the conclusion that one should never ever pick a fight with a farmer… They have got to be some tough cookies to be able to work that hard…

Of course most of them also carry a firearm conceal within their bib overalls, at least around these parts but that is a story for another time.

Forty years with Delta…. Nothing I can add to that…. WOW…

This was some bracket game…or somethin’ I don’t exactly understand, but I watched baseball tonight, and they said something about having trouble motivating themselves for a game that doesn’t really matter, and how they’d rather have been flying out to the west coast instead of playing a game. ESPN’s site provides no clarification.

So there. More games for the US, ain’t ya glad to know that? 😛

Yo… Raisins, I have had all three, Dish, Comcast and DirecTV… DirectV is the best as far as what they offer in their package. Just upgraded to HD on one of the TVs. Whoa… Eye popping…

Did you know DirecTV is owned by News Corp? See Rupert Murdoch. Could explain why we get all the Fox Channels. I don’t remember the Obama Channel but it might have been on there somewhere. Mixed in with all the other shills selling their snake oils…

Only problem I have experience with them is during weather… Of course DISH is the same.

You are lucky Raisins as you don’t live “Out of Market” so you can get the Sport’s South feeds. Unlike myself and being forced to buy the MLB package.

By the way, the MLB network is pretty good. Reminds me of ESPN before they went all Yankees, Red Sox, football and basketball crazy. I hardly ever watch Sports Center now. And I miss Australian rules football, even though I never understood the rules…..

While scraping and repairing my road this morning, I got a little close to some sapling and managed to cause one to spring back and strike me in the face.. After the initial shock and surprise of the event.. (dang thang smarted) … I noticed the vision in my left eye was a little blurry. I checked first the left then the right and sure enough, the left was a bit blurry when I covered my right eye… Well, it didn’t hurt but it did annoy me that I had been so careless. I continued what I was doing however and finished after another hour or so.

When I came in for lunch, I went in to wash up and removed the glasses I had been wearing. It was then I noticed I was missing the left lens from glasses… I showed them to Josie and she was immediately concerned and also asked if I knew where the lens was? I said likely buried in the road but it was no big deal as far as I was concerned… I was just happy to know I’m not going blind…. 🙂

NEW YORK — Citigroup Inc. plans to spend about $10 million on new offices for senior executives, according to a Bloomberg report Thursday. The changes at the bank’s headquarters in New York City will include a new office for Chief Executive Vikram Pandit. The project is made up of 17 private offices, two conference rooms and open areas, reported Bloomberg. Citi told Bloomberg that the refurbishment, which it began planning in June, will save the bank money in the long run.

Hello, all! I’ve been a stranger in these parts, particularly on commentary. I do try to catch up on all of Stuff-ville’s musings! You really are an entertaining bunch!

OK…I’ve digested comments galore on socialism, government intervention, etc., etc. Honestly, while I understand the crux of the issue, too often it comes across as hyperbole. That’s not to say the path isn’t defined…simply not clear enough for me to, personally, reach the same conclusion. Metaphorically, I need more than a whiff of smoke before yelling ‘fire!’.

Today, however, I am deeply disturbed by government reaction…which in no way resembles governing. There are few amongst us that don’t view many of the issues surrounding some of this nation’s largest companies as irresponsible, at the very minimum.

I’m about to digress, so I’ll press forward. Folks, the action taken today by the House is as scary a piece of legislation as I’ve ever witnessed. How can we sit back, confidently, and think for a New York minute, that taxing any individual after the fact (income earned, contractually), is legal in even the most remote sense? How can that be constitutional? If it is, how can any of us sit around our table tonight and believe our freedoms have been not only trampled on, the concrete has been poured and spread!

Our Congress feels this is right? Does this reflect ‘We the People’ of Stuff-ville? Do you have a contract with any individual/entity? If so, do you not feel it’s binding, notwithstanding the personal views of any other person on this planet? Well, despite the financial condition of AIG, those folks working there, competency aside, entered into an agreement. If our government felt AIG was worth rescuing, it did so in the knowledge that business decision put it there…such as these contracts.

Come on, folks! Is the money really needed to support folks who live here on the dole, illegally? Is the money to offset breaking the sacred contract with our Veterans, who are now expected to shoulder the financial burden of their sacrifice for this country…for our Freedom?

Suffice to say…I’m a very disappointed American tonight.

A lesson I learned many years ago was never take money from the government… It just allowed them to get into your life even more deeply.

Now a political stance… While I find the payment of bonuses to folks who lead a company into failure distasteful, I find congress rushing about willey-nilly without a clue and then imposing a tax on a special group of people to be even more frightening. Aside from the fact it is unconstitutional, it shows they think they can do whatever they want. Folks, if they tax those folks, they can tax us…

You know, if they had let AIG fail, well, it would have hurt but it would be over with…. Now we are just going to keep on until we are really in a heap of dung…

As for the being knocked silly… Would be tough to tell the difference… 🙂

Thanks, Gil…appreciate the sentiment. As I told my wife, I’ve never been as upset with our government as I am at this moment. If this action is deemed constitutional, then contract law in the US flies out the window. It is ‘null and void’. Who would do business with any company or individual in the US after this?

Not only that, this smacks of federal ‘imminent domain’. Only the government can retroactively decide what you owe in taxes…even after April 15? I’m sorry…this, I don’t get. I do know, I’m terribly disturbed…terribly so. I guess it shows, huh? 😕 Oh well! 🙄

Salty, I do believe that a suit against this special taxation would be successful, simply based on our Constitution. It is impossible to single out a tiny handful of people for something like that. Those lunatics in Congress don’t have a clue what the Constitution says – and don’t care. From Pelosi on down, they believe they are all-powerful without check or balance.

I just read that Pelosi is on record as saying that removing illegals from the US is “un-American”. What part of “ILLEGAL” does she not understand?? What part of ‘Americans need those jobs’ does she not get?? And, Obama has promised a large group of Latinos in CA that “immigration reform is on its way quickly”. Same questions could be asked of him!

‘Away From the Politics of Fear’

Janet Napolitano, 51, is President Obama’s new Homeland Security Secretary. She spoke with SPIEGEL about immigration, the continued threat of terrorism and the changing tone in Washington.

SPIEGEL: Madame Secretary, in your first testimony to the US Congress as Homeland Security Secretary you never mentioned the word “terrorism.” Does Islamist terrorism suddenly no longer pose a threat to your country?

Napolitano: Of course it does. I presume there is always a threat from terrorism. In my speech, although I did not use the word “terrorism,” I referred to “man-caused” disasters. That is perhaps only a nuance, but it demonstrates that we want to move away from the politics of fear toward a policy of being prepared for all risks that can occur.

Now, however, I am really quite tired…believe I will turn in early and sleep quite hard, I hope. Leave the night light on, please. Has the gov’t exercised imminent domain and claimed the road to Stuff-ville…has the road been re-routed, maps updated, and folks know not how to get here? Weird…very weird.

My oldest girl was a great skater, could not hit worth a lick.. no matter how much she was coached, just could not do it… I let her skate… literally. My number three daughter was a heck of a softball player, played until she was 25 or so, her two oldest girls play fast pitch… Funny how it takes with one and not the other…

And Braves win again… 12-1 over the Mutts.. I know, doesn’t count but it sure feels better than being 4-15….

They were just talking about Stephen Strasburg on baseball tonight. A scout not given to hyperbole told Buster Olney that he is the best pitching prospect….ever! And it’s not even close! Someone else told him that he could go right to the big leagues, and be a number 2, now! Better than AJ Burnett is now!!! Of course, Satan is his advisor. Still, I want to see this kid pitch in the bigs this year! Nationals have the first pick Gil!!!

A recent story, then one from last year… I guess I heard wrong, not just the best pitching prospect, but best prospect, period!!! 92 to 94 MPH slider??? 102 MPH fastball WITH movement???? Hope he doesn’t blow his arm out!!!!!

I expect the Braves (when is their first pick?) to choose a high school kid over a college player. They seem to feel they get more for less money and have greater input on their development. Still, the Braves have done pretty decent with their draft picks in the past…

So who will draft him? The Yankees because they have deep pockets? The Nats who may not go that deep? Does he say no thanks if he does not get an offer he likes and pitch another year in college? So many questions…. So easy for Boras to game the system… Does he even know we are in a down economy or is he striving for his own economic stimulus? It’s easy to bash Boras but wouldn’t we have wanted him to be representing us?

And Chris.. How goes the little league practice? Playing games yet?

Gil, if he’s truly all that and a bag of chips(And yes, I remember Todd Von Poppel, and being very mad he didn’t want to sign with the Braves-who’d we get stuck with instead, just Chipper?) If every scout, smart folks like Gwynn say he’s a freak, then the Nationals should pay whatever Borass is asking. And you know I hate that guy!(He has made many rich, but I have also read about kids that didn’t that a million dollar offer because he said not to, then got hurt, or peaked too early and never saw the money Borass promised)
If he’s the next Roger Clemens, he will be a huge draw, and will be a guy to build around. I still think they are closer to the team we saw in 2007, than the team in 2008, and they still gave us fits.

Gil, baseball practice is good! It wear both Matt and I both out! His coach has them practicing 4 x per week with each practice being 2hrs roughly. It looks like he’ll probably wind up playing first (which he loves) and catching mostly (which I love; him, not so much). I’m not sure how much playing time he’ll get because he’s one of the younger boys and some of the kids have played on one of the elite travel teams we have here.

Gil, you raise an interesting question about who might draft Strasburg. If the Nats don’t draft him because of signability concerns I wouldn’t blame them. At the same time, however, that’s not really the way the system is set up to work. I know the idea of a bonus slotting system has problems but each year it seems that some of the perennial early draft picking teams pass on some young stud because they’re not sure they can afford him. That really flies in the face of what the draft is supposed to be about.

Looks like the Braves have the number seven over-all pick, should be able to get a pretty good kid if you get to pick seventh.

Chris, some teams are cheap at every level. They get money from the richer teams, and won’t pay for top draft picks, or free agents. Why don’t teams like the Pirates and KC have just ton of talent from having high picks year after year???

    Braves Fielding Offers for Pitching
By Brian Shephard [March 21, 2009 at 6:01pm CST]

Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports that Braves GM Frank Wren may look to trade surplus pitching as the season nears. According to Bowman, “Wren has already started to receive a number of pitches from teams that need arms.”

Bowman writes that the “most expendable pitchers” appear to be Jeff Bennett, Buddy Carlyle, Manny Acosta and Jorge Campillo.

I would not cry at the departure of any of those mentioned. While all are good guys and all helped Atlanta limp through last season, all have become extra pieces in a very large puzzle.

I think Buddy is the most underrated and Acosta is very Jeckle and Hyde like. Bennett is Bennett and Jorge is still getting folks out with smoke and mirrors. Of course Campillo is still cursed with that curve ball that stays up in the strike zone and after two years I see he still throws it far too often.

Throwing pitches down in the zone is no guarantee they won’t be hit but boy does it reduce the likelihood of the ball going out of the park.

I think the real key is Boyer’s return to form. He is once again showing the same pitches he possessed when he first came up. Now if the Braves can convince him to wear a football helmet and steel mesh gloves when he is not pitching then the Bravos might keep him availible for the entire season.

And while I am assessing pitchers, how many think this will be Sorento’s last go round with Atlanta, no matter how well he does? He is making closer money while not being the primary closer.

And while I have the floor to myself…. I really think the Braves should establish a baseball academy like the Royals did back in the early 80’s. It won’t get done while the organization is owned by faceless corporation but surely there must be some millionaire in Georgia who could see the benefit of assuring a talent pipeline for the Bravos. Lord knows money is thrown away on a lot of projects which have less merit…

    Washington Post

The Obama administration is considering asking Congress to give the Treasury secretary unprecedented powers to initiate the seizure of non-bank financial companies, such as large insurers, investment firms and hedge funds, whose collapse would damage the broader economy, according to an administration document.

The government at present has the authority to seize only banks.

Giving the Treasury secretary authority over a broader range of companies would mark a significant shift from the existing model of financial regulation, which relies on independent agencies that are shielded from the political process. The Treasury secretary, a member of the president’s Cabinet, would exercise the new powers in consultation with the White House, the Federal Reserve and other regulators, according to the document.

The administration plans to send legislation to Capitol Hill this week. Sources cautioned that the details, including the Treasury’s role, are still in flux.

    NC news:
    JOURNAL RALEIGH BUREAU

    Published: March 21, 2009

    RALEIGH

A state legislator from Winston-Salem wants to require companies that do business with the state to disclose their historical ties to slavery.

Under a bill sponsored by Rep. Larry Womble, companies entering into contracts with the state would have to search their corporate records for evidence that they participated in slavery or profited from it.

A company would have to publicly disclose any records of ties to slavery, including the names of any enslaved workers or slaveholders contained in the records.

    And this is beneficial how?

Stimulus plan, CL! Puts historians back to work! Especially those with a focus on revisionist history! 🙄

From the ‘very poorly constructed sentence/paragraph’ file:

Lean meat as part of a balanced diet can prevent chronic disease, along with exercise and avoiding smoking

So, do you infer, as I do, that red meat as part of a balanced diet can:
    1. prevent chronic disease
    2. prevent exercise 😯
    3. avoid smoking. (Because your mouth is full? Don’t puff with your mouth full?)

It is what the sentence said.

Oh, lest I forget, the article also stresses that reducing red meat intake will reduce herd populations and, thus, (drum roll, please!) contribute to easing global warming. Yep, a day without a global warming solution is a day with continued …. gas!

FBG: Way to step up and take a stand last night. I like that…sic ’em….sic ’em good! 😆

Sound more and more like the Venezuelan model of government everyday. How do you boil a frog?

Ties to slavery? I had a great uncle who owned many slaves, from what I can tell, he did not profit from it. Lost his fortune during the War of Northern Aggression because he loaned large sums of money to the CSA…

Seems to me we are still paying for that particular folly, now folks are taken care of from cradle to grave but do not have to labor for it…

Now they’re living on the Plantation of Democrat Political Machine.

I had a relative back in the 1860s who had the following “slaves” listed in his household:
1 black female under age 5
1 black female between ages 70-80, bedridden
1 black male between ages 80-90, blind

This same relative was owed a sizable amount of money from a loan to a neighbor. The neighbor died, and paying off the debt would have taken everything the widow had. I have a copy of the court record where he forgave the entire debt.

Well, I’m certainly 100% against slavery – in any form – but I wasn’t there to put in my 2 cents’ worth. Neither were any of these people today. Maybe they should try what I did: work for what I got.

Sorry I haven’t been around much today. Bought a new DVD recorder (Mainly paid with Birthday moola) Well, nothing is easy anymore, and I am getting older. Hooked it up just the way my SuperBeta(that’s what it says it is!) was hooked up(basic dvd players don’t have tuners, no cable screw in connections, so it was my tuner-had a 4 way switcher to play DVD’s, vhs, beta, and yes, Laserdisc) Specifically bought a DVD recorder with a tuner to make everything easier, ha!!! No picture when I hooked it up. Well, tv plays swell, clearer than ever, but DVD’s wouldn’t show up, no menu, nada. And this was one everyone on Amazon was saying was swell for folks just upgrading from their VHS player. Horse hockey!!! 😡
I dug up a S-Video connection and didn’t use the screw in, RF coaxial cable, cables. Nope. Nice picture though.
Called today. After getting disconnected, I did get a guy, in the states and everything! After I told him my tale of woe, he said I needed to have the RCA video and audio cables(Yellow, red and White) from the satellite disc to the DVD players input, and another set from the DVD player’s output to the TV. In fact, that part was mandatory!!! Huh??? Why, the Philips DVD recorder I had for a whole 2-3 years before it gave up, I didn’t have to do that!!! Oh, you mean Toshiba doesn’t put in RF converters(Which the Philips had) in ANY models these days???
So, most basic recorders don’t have tuners , and many brands don’t have RF converters…stuff that every el-cheapo VHS recorder had a few years ago…ok….Progress.
So, I had to buy 12 foot cables(TV is about 8 feet away, but no one seems to make a size between 6 and 12 feet-always nice to be the only one in need of a particular item)
    Still no picture!!!! 😡 😡 😡
I show the 100 page manual to Pa…he used to be mr. hook up guy, but just for stereo stuff. I was ready to return this sucker to Amazon, but he found this info.
After you have completed the connections, Switch the imput selector on your tv to an appropriate external input channel.Press a button on the tvs original remote control that selects an external input channel until the DVD recorders opening picture appears.

Missed that info!!! Finally, can see a menu…wish me luck that I will be able to play and record with the dvd recorder/player.

FBG, my Dad and I eat at a Chick-fil-A every Tuesday. Breakfast buffet, Dad loves that stuff. Anyway, there is a waitress there, cute, but not not full of herself, very sweet. Lots of folks come there just because of her. 18, so way too young, sadly enough.(She was truly shocked when I said I was in my 40’s, I was her parents age! )
But, one day these 3 guys were at a table of hers and I heard her say she couldn’t get off Friday night. I was feeling a vague feeling that she really shouldn’t go out with those swarthy looking dude… They did not look like guys she should be hanging out with. Well, later on, she introduced one of those guys to us, and other regulars there as her boyfriend! 😯 My first words were, a lot of folks were fond of her, you better treat her right! I was only slightly kidding. He’s probably fine, but damn…

Gil, I used to be the guy folks came to for VCR issues. Never used to bother with manuals…well, those days are clearly over.
Never have touched the imput on the TV remote before. Sure, to switch from one device or another I have switched imputs on DVD players to go to say the VCR/Beta that was hooked up to it, but the TV?? I guess it makes sense having RCA cables to the TV but still. It was simple. 2 cables. One in from the cable. One out to the TV. Sigh…
I just can’t imagine many people figuring this out when they upgrade from VHS or just a DVD player.
Oh, and my 4-5 year old TV didn’t have component video cable connections, so couldn’t do that,(Satellite box doesn’t either) or HDMI . As my Great aunt used to say after her stroke…too much for me!

So rather than continue to be frustrated, I just went ahead and bit the bullet and ordered a copy from Tiger Direct.

As I did not want to buy all new software again like I did with the switch from Windows 98 to XP, I have continued to use XP. Besides, Vista is such a memory hog….

I’m thinking this place isn’t worth the effort to keep it running. :-\

CL, don’t be silly. Sometimes life takes us away from those things that we like but it doesn’t mean we don’t like them any more.

Sorry to have been so negligent in visiting the blog lately. My allergies really wore me out for about four days and then I’ve had to work quite a bit for the past few days — not a bad thing — but has distracted me from doing the things I like, which includes chatting with all you good people.

Hope all is well with you folks.

Now baseball… Got nothing’. Been too distracted with work to pay much attention. I did see the last few innings of the WBC final. Anyone have any thoughts about the US team?

Anyone remember last year??? I know, it was a long time ago.
Anyway, I was thinking, why do folks put the Marlins above us??? What was their record last year, anyway???
84-77. What did the braves do last year???
    72-90. Oh….
Clearly, we are a much better team than last year. But, that is a tough record to turn around from. Braves can do it, but it shows what a tough division we are in when the 3rd place team was 7 games above .500 and are likely to improve with Cameron Maybin, and the other kids getting better.
What’s funny, is that even if Derek Lowe went down, it Feels like with Hanson, and other options, we are not in the same pitching bind as last year. but…we lose our 3rd baseman, or our catcher for any length of time…then we’ve got problems.

Anyone have any thoughts about the US team?

Yes… they should have all been in their respective team camps getting ready for the regular season rather than trying to play a competitive made-for-TV tournament when few if any of the players were physically ready to do so. Wouldn’t you like to be Cecil Cooper watching your ace go far too long in a game that was already out of hand and of no consequence to you anyway? I’m ticked that Chipper got hurt. He can spin the “I could have done this in camp” line all he wants… The bottom line is, he was going at 100% in a meaningless game when his body was attuned to going 60% working toward 100% by April 1.

Does this somehow make me “unpatriotic” calling these games meaningless? Not when you consider the fact that this trumped up tournament was made for TV by ESPN and MLB. Anybody remember Ted Turner’s Goodwill Games that could only be viewed on Ted Turner’s cable network? The only Goodwill generated was in Teddy’s bank account. The ESPN machine touted the WBC in every broadcast they made for 2 months leading up to it, and did nothing but spin every action in the tourney for it’s exclusively ESPN dwelling duration. The excuse making for the USA team, and the lauding of Golden Boy David Wright and an obviously declining “Captain” Derek Jeter for every single step they took was nauseating.

Maybe someday I’ll tell you how I really feel about it…

TAP TAP TAP… Is the mic on?

    Okay, a quick rant….

Why do public officials, news organizations, talking heads and other erstwhile blowflies feel the need to cause widespread panic, distrust, fear or anger over every contrived incident? I feel like I am living in the era of Joe McCarthy with all the bloviating from the left and the right…. Give it a rest….

Folks, I did not like the fact that the CEOs of the company I worked for was making huge bonuses while cutting the pay and benefits of hourly workers but I didn’t begrudge him of that fact. Gave me motivation to work harder…. Why are people up in arms about people making money? Where else would endowments come from than folks who feel guilty about screwing over folks during their life so they try to buy their way into heaven?

Everything in moderation is a good tenet… I should have heeded that advice many times during my life but oh well….

    3. Chipper, 3B
    4. McCann, C
    5. Francoeur, RF
    6. Norton, 1B (Kotchman scratched, still recovering from flu)
    7. B. Jones, LF
    8. Schafer, CF
    9. Lowe, RH

I think we’ll see KJ back in the leadoff spot this season, with Schafer winning the CF job and batting 8th. GA will bat 5th, and FrenchLick and Kotch will move down a notch. Just a hunch…

Glavine throws it back at Pedro

    BY DAVID LENNON | david.lennon@newsday.com
    March 22, 2009

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Tom Glavine already is a bargain, so the Braves probably felt as if they got more than their money’s worth in yesterday’s 12-1 rout of the B-list Mets sent north to Disney. Glavine, who barely broke 80 mph, retired nine of the 11 batters he faced.

Perhaps the hardest pitch he threw was a response to Pedro Martinez, who said recently that he would not accept a “Glavine-like” contract to return to the majors. Glavine signed a one-year deal worth $1 million that could reach $4.5 million with incentives.

“Could I have made more money?” Glavine asked. “Yeah, maybe if I was willing to go somewhere else and do it. But at this stage of my life, I’m not willing to do that. That would not have been worth it for me …

“On the one hand, I understand what Pedro was saying, believe me. There was a point for me that financially it wasn’t worth coming back.

“But at the same time, you have to be mindful what the market is, what you can realistically get, and in my case, I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t like being a guy that was hurt last year and was just collecting a paycheck. I didn’t want to do that. To me, I want to go out there, and if I’m healthy and I’m pitching, then I’m going to get paid. If I’m not, then I’m not a burden to this club.

Glavine made 13 starts last season after signing an $8-million contract. Martinez made 25 starts in the last two seasons of his last contract, a $53-million, four-year deal with the Mets.

V, I think I said something about that a few weeks ago. Schafer batting 8th. KJ isn’t a real threat to steal, and clearly is too patient batting first. So naturally, he bats leadoff…sigh….I know, there really isn’t a classic(if there is such a thing) 8th hitter, but I’d rather see Kotchman there, or a rotating 8th hitter.

I’m sure Pedro has his reasons for wanting money too.

Come to think of it, I’m sure we could all use an extra million or two right now….

A different story on Steven Strasburg . Well, it’s the same, story, he throws really hard! 😛

SAN DIEGO – The radar gun blinks wildly. It’s not used to this. No one makes it strain to read out a third digit. It looks like binary code, not the speed of a pitch from a 20-year-old kid: 101.

It keeps showing up, 101 again and again, and as scouts peek at the number, they ask aloud what everyone else in the baseball world wonders: Will Stephen Strasburg someday throw a baseball harder than anyone has before?

Two men holding radar guns as well as his pitching coach said he has touched 103 mph this season. Only three others have done that, and all were major league relief pitchers, not juniors in college. Strasburg is a starter for San Diego State, and his velocity levels off in triple digits, something never seen, not from Nolan Ryan or Randy Johnson or any of the modern fireballers since the advent of the radar gun.

So it’s no surprise that Strasburg is dominating college like no pitcher ever has. He has 74 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings, meaning only 29 outs have come via batted ball. He fanned 23 batters in one game last year, and in seven outings with Team USA last summer, culminating with the Beijing Olympics, he struck out 62 in 41 innings.

It’s all orders of magnitude and/or relativity…or something like that. Regardless, it will be reported the drought continues, while your neighbor’s boat floats down the street! The omitted detail will be it’s measured over a fifty year period, and we’re still down six inches! As well know too well, the truth is comprised of the said and the un-said; who knew it would take math to interpret English! 😯

I had to borrow these stats from our friendly neighborhood beat writer across the street:

Derek Lowe leads the NL with 24 strikeouts entering today’s games, while Jordan Schafer was fifth with a .383 average and tied for seventh with five stolen bases…. In the Grapefruit League (Florida spring training teams), Brandon Jones (.356) and Matt Diaz (.354) also ranked among batting leaders, while Diaz (.604) was fourth in slugging percentage, and Schafer (.420) was seventh in OBP.

Lesse… I still think Schafer has all but won the job. BJones is making a case for himself, but is likely late spring trade bait. If Schafer stays with the big club, and the only reason he won’t will be “arb clock” concerns, then either speedster JAnderson or Blanco will be OF #4. Any of those 3, JAnderson, Blanco, or BJones could be considered late spring trade bait. If Schafer could capably hold down the leadoff spot, adding a stolen base threat, many possibilities abound with the lineup. Actually, the lineup will be pretty solid anyway. I still see KJ as leadoff on Opening Night. My projection (likely against LHP Cole Hamels):

    KJ
    Yunel
    Chipper
    Mac
GA (I know it’s lefty/lefty… but he won’t sit opening night)
    FrenchVanilla
    Kotch
    Schafer

I like the potential of this lineup. It won’t hit a ton of dingers, but it’ll still produce plenty of runs. Gap hitters top to bottom…

Just dropped in to see what condition your condition was in… and to say hey, hi, hello and howdy… and maybe rant a bit.

Seems like a ‘coons age. Hope everybody is faring well in this, uh, new world order, horrendous economy and all.

This ol’ baseball fan has been very busy of late, but then, who isn’t? Between trying to make hay during those moments when the sun peeks out and a steady course of keeping the wolves at bay, there hasn’t been much time between the capital city and the coast for some of my favorite pastimes, like Braves & Stuff.

As a result, I haven’t even caught up on the blog. It’s gonna take me a week just to do that. A few random thoughts before I get away from this computer and get outside for a much needed diversion away from the place my derriere has been parked too long lately:

First, the new Braves & Stuff masthead design and format look great, sister. Nice job and the Ava-Grava-Pat Bena-Whatever-tar thingies are even bigger and easier to see. Nice. CL, maybe on the next update, you could add Glav? It’d be nice to see his mug there for old times sake.

On the WBC: This may actually take a bit longer. Bear with me here. No blogging in the midst of what’s going on in this country and, as you might imagine, have a few things on my chest.

I cannot say one single positive thing about that ill conceived, poorly timed, conflict of MLB interest, money motivated sports farse except that at long last, it’s over. We already have two leagues; six divisions and players from all over the world represented in the MLB, played in America, the land of the free (for the time being) and brave. The MLB is (has been) a microcosm of America, which is a ‘melting pot’ where various nationalities would…

    Assimilate!

A nice word, that. In this new world we do not assimilate, we separate. We are Jews, Catholics, and Protestants. We are Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Japanese. We are black, white, brown or yellow. We are young or old. We are rich, poor or middle class. We are not Americans playing OUR game, we are any number of minorities, special interest groups and nationalities that are being sliced, parsed, categorized and demographically scrutinized in a most politically correct, socially segregating manner.

The circus known as World Baseball Classic should drop the ‘Classic’ from it’s dubious title, because the only thing classic about it is that it seems to fit right in with the new “One World Order”, of merging the things we shouldn’t, like global currency, and separating what should be joined, such as American citizens.

Consider the cause and effect of dividing the people of a nation into small, self-interest groups, colors and nationalities. No need for imagination there… it’s happened. WBC plays right into all of that, but I’m sure that social engineering isn’t the motivation, but money. If there is a larger conspiracy, it is not a small group of legislators sitting behind closed doors or a group of media magnates plotting to support the divisions between us with sporting venues, sitcoms and reality shows. No, this has been developing in all sectors for decades.

As a society, we have been educated, pressured, motivated and conditioned to either be blind to injustice or to just be weak and let all of this happen without a peep or self-serving and damn everyone else as long as I get mine. We have, as a people, not become whom we are or arrived at this place overnight… we have become what we are now as a result of many years.

Like tainted water dripping on the stone foundation of America, one seemingly harmless, uneventful drop at a time. The WBC contributes in it’s own little insignificant way like a drop in the ocean. More devastating, less like a drop and more like a Tsunami would be the Euro, the UN, the World Bank and Socialist regimes and treacherous politicos that purposefully bore a hole into their own societies. Here at home, those same arbiters of “Change” pursue the destruction of our national unity and do what they do best… promote division, seek power and profit. Through self-interest they support the causes and create the conditions that divide the subcultures. They feed the media with differences between us and repeat the subtle mantra in a million different ways until they succeed at dividing and conquering.

We The People, who strive for peace and happiness, not conflict…

We The People who are busy with our work and focused on our family, not suspicion and separation…

We The People who, because we have trusted too long, lost our focus, become lazy, fed at the trough of welfare, succumbed to greed or taken freedom for granted find ourselves just going along and getting along because it suits us or benefits us, even if it harms the country.

We The People, over time, surrounded by a barrage of subliminal, motivating messages throughout every single day are unwittingly led like a herd to find hollow comfort among the various groups and categories we have been placed into. We grow lazy.

Then, We The People… Obey. We do this often without realizing it. Like Pavlov’s dogs, we push the closest, easiest button for instant gratification. We go where they tell us, we pay what they ask us, we watch what they show us, we believe what they tell us, we are entertained what they feed us, we halt when they say halt, we go when they say go, we allow them to take and take and take. Over time, We The People become silent. We go quiet. We comply. We The People fall right into line.

In the end, We The People lose our individuality and become mere pieces in a larger ‘consumer’ group. We become pawns in a large voting block. We are designated become an insignificant member of a race, creed, color or nationality. We lose ourselves and they profit from it. Trouble is, “they” is not “them”… it is us.

God save We The People. God willing, We The People will protect our Constitution and, if necessary, fight for our freedom. On a much less significant front, We The Fans need to voice our disgust with things like the WBC. Otherwise, our love for watching baseball, any baseball, will be mistaken for support of a further watered down, nationalized, globalized destruction of an American pastime.

The WBC didn’t bother me so much that it caused me to go off on this sermon. It’s just that, if we stay silent on all the little, seemingly innocent things, we continue down the road to a shallow, Pavlovian, subservient culture. No, this opine is not about WBC nor has the WBC gotten that far under my skin to warrant a diatribe. I’m pointing it out because I see it as one more little divisive thing that cuts into the fabric of America. And I’m guessing most folks either wouldn’t agree, wouldn’t care or wouldn’t even notice. So be it. Just seeing a trend, freedom of thought, freedom of speech and such.

Now, I’m ready for some good ol’ Braves baseball. See you guys around with a shorter, less obtrusive howdy do soon.

As far as comments on his blog/editorial etc… They have not yet learned the art of interaction between the bloggers. The Nationals do not have the history yet which lends itself to rabid fan support like the Redskins…

On baseball tonight they showed Selig talking about the next WBC, (Which thank goodness will be every 4 years now)and how there needs to be more intensity in the events from Team USA. Well, that sure didn’t seem to go over well with some players that said they were very much into the WBC, and energy/intensity was not an issue.
Selig also wants to get the best players involved. Good luck with that Bud! Teams really want to lose their best player for nonevent!
To play Devil’s advocate for a sec, I am sure beyond the money issue, I am sure the thought is to make US baseball bigger all over the world, to turn this into Soccer’s big event(World Cup?? Ain’t no soccer fan)
And I know Gil and Salty liked some of the action. But, wrong time of year. the Host of Baseball tonight has the best idea, have the tournament played between the allstar break. I guess it would have to be a longer break than most fans would want, but that happening every 4 years, with nice and warm arms and legs makes more sense than what happens now. Did you know the Marlins closer has a strained rotator cuff from the WBC???

It’s been a while since I’ve clogged the filter, so here’s some music. The song is a personal favorite; makes me think…which many songs don’t. I hope you enjoy it, the emotion in the singer’s voice is particularly moving and, coupled with the movie clip, I think resonates. VOR, for some reason, I thought of you. 😕

Down To My Last (Alter Bridge ) ,/b>

And to those to which we sing,
We are honored you let us in
I remember the thoughts of many things,
Of the glory that you bring

I was never the right one to dare to dream,
It’s funny what this life has done to me now
    You were always the only,
To help me see there was a road I must find,
    A road that was mine

But I’m down to my last,
    I’m standing here alone
    Looking back, on it all
But I’m down to my last,
    I’m ready but I’m wrong,
And I’m blind to it all

And to the world to which we sing,
Want to try to do us in
I remember your name and I know your face
    Can’t forgive and can’t erase

I was never the right one
To bear the weight of something fueled by words
    I’d learn to hate
    You were always the only
To help me see that to love is to shine
    In your world, blind

But I’m down to my last
    I’m standing here alone
    Looking back on it all
But I’m down to my last
    I’m ready but I’m wrong
And I’m blind to it all

    [solo]

But I’m down to my last
Well I’m ready but I’m wrong,
And I’m scared of it all

But I’m down to my last
    I’m ready but I’m wrong
And I’m blind to it all
But I’m down to my last
And I’m ready but I’m wrong

I was beginning to wonder, FBG! All those old smelly carcasses laying around and day after day passed. 😆

    Rosenthal’s prediction for ’09 season:
National League Rookie – Tommy Hanson, Braves

“For the sake of consistency, I should go with Marlins center fielder Cameron Maybin, employing the same logic that I used to pick Andrus. But Hanson, a 22-year-old right-hander, is an ace in waiting. He will open at Class AAA, but might be on an even faster track than Maybin toward stardom.

Ideally, the Braves will not even need Hanson; right-handed newcomers Derek Lowe and Javier Vazquez are particularly durable. But it’s highly doubtful that the Braves will use only five starters all season when their rotation includes 43-year-old lefty Tom Glavine, who is coming off shoulder and elbow surgery.

Once Hanson gets his chance, there will be no turning back. He was terrific in the Arizona Fall League and terrific in spring training, drawing praise from one Braves’ veteran after another.”

He’s right on another front as well. Hanson will see time this year. It is very unreasonable to expect all 5 starters to last an entire season.

That’s the thing, visitors come & go all the time. They’re supposed to sign in but a lot don’t bother. How do you know if someone doesn’t belong there? One of the things they emphasize at Melissa’s facility is that it is the residents’ home. Pretty hard to have a welcoming, homey atmosphere if you have to secure the place like Ft. Knox.

We’ve not been in one that requires a sign-in for all visitors. Don’t think that would really help in these type situations. After dark hours, all entrances/exits are locked except for one in most places.

And it IS the home of the residents! They LIVE there. I don’t know what the answer is. It takes a special demon to single out these people, though.

Also in today’s news was a man who shot and killed one sister, then decapitated another young sister was celebrating her 5th birthday. What kind of hellishness gets into these people???

ajc on the pitcher acquired for Anderson:

[Rudy] Darrow, 25, was 5-3 with a 2.02 ERA in 47 relief appearances last season in Class A and Class AA, and held right-handed hitters to a .168 average. The right-handed sidearmer had 57 strikeouts in 63 1/3 innings, while allowing 52 hits and 23 walks.

Darrow, who’ll be assigned to Class AA Mississippi, had a groundball-to-flyball ratio of 4.8 last season. As a point of reference, Arizona’s Brandon Webb had a 3.2 ratio to lead the majors.

Wren has done a nice job this year, despite some of the early bad press. To get a pitcher of any quality for a guy that was for all practical purposes gonna be waived in a few days is a feat. Atta boy, Frank!

It’s funny, 15-20 years ago a guy like Josh Anderson who can hit .280, .290 and potentially steal 40-50 bases would get a chance to play…somewhere. Isn’t it amazing that there isn’t some team, some last place team, in need of a guy like him. But, every team seems to have 5 outfielders.

You know, I am sure most would disagree with me, but there is enough talent(at least from a hitting standpoint) for 2 more teams in the M.L. Gil, when you mention a kid’s name, it’s as if EF Hutton had spoken: everybody stops to listen! 😀

from email – but well worth repeating even if you’ve already seen it:

    WHEN THE MUSIC STOPPED

For those who are unaware, at a military theater, the National Anthem is played before every movie.

From a Chaplain in Iraq :

I recently attended a showing of “Superman 3,” here at “LSA Anaconda.”

We have a large auditorium we use for movies, as well as memorial services and other large gatherings. As is the custom back in the States, we stood and snapped to attention when the National Anthem began before the main feature. All was going as planned until about three-quarters of the way through The National Anthem the music stopped.

Now, what would happen if this occurred with 1,000 18-22 year-olds back in the States? I imagine there would be hoots, catcalls, laughter, a few rude comments; and everyone would sit down and call for a movie. Of course, that is, if they had stood for the National Anthem in the first place. Here, the 1,000 Soldiers continued to stand at attention, eyes fixed forward. The music started again. The Soldiers continued to quietly stand at attention. And again, at the same point, the music stopped. What would you expect to happen?

Even here I would imagine laughter, as everyone finally sat down and expected the movie to start. But here, you could have heard a pin drop. Every Soldier continued to stand at attention. Suddenly there was a lone voice, then a dozen, and quickly the room was filled with the voices of a thousand soldiers, finishing where the recording left off:” And the rockets red glare, ! The bomb s bursting in air, Gave proof through the night That our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave”

It was the most inspiring moment I have had here in Iraq . I wanted you to know what kind of Soldiers are serving you here. Remember them as they fight for you! Pass this along as a reminder to others to be ever in prayer for all our soldiers serving us here at home and abroad. For many have already paid the ultimate price.

    Written by Chaplain Jim Higgins

[LSA Anaconda is at the Balad Airport in Iraq, north of Bagdad]

I am so very proud of the young men and women who serve in our armed forces! Thank you to them from this one American!

    Chipper’s contract – from The Baltimore Sun…

“Due $10 million this season in the option year of a contract that began in 2006, Jones gets a $3 million signing bonus as part of the new deal, payable in $1 million installments each Jan. 15 starting next year.

Jones receives annual salaries of $13 million from 2010-12 and can earn $1.5 million a year in performance bonuses: $750,000 each for 135 and 140 games.

His contract contains a $9 million option for 2013 that would become guaranteed if he plays in 123 games in 2012 or averages 127 games in 2011-12. The option price could increase by up to $4 million: $1 million each for 128, 133, 138 and 140 games in 2012 (or averages of 132, 137, 138 and 140 in 2011-12). In addition, he could earn $1.5 million in performance bonuses based on the earlier criteria.

If the vesting option fails to become guaranteed, the club would hold a $7 million option.”

Good morning all… Well, I hope everyone avoided the latest computer virus. Spent the better part of yesterday evening downloading Microsoft Defender and running scans. That was in addition to AVG Free which I run everyday… So far so good.

I see that Georgia is set to save 5.5 million by releasing some prisoners early. We could save even more if we would return to flogging or adopt caning. Would be a heck of a deterrent too. I am pretty sure there would be fewer repeat offenders. Of course I am sure there are some who feel it is our own fault for getting robbed or swindled. We should have been so successful in the first place so as to become a tempting target.

And baseball, good for Chipper… Sounds like he will do alright as long as he doesn’t let too many other people handle his money. Of course he really maybe should get a lot of it deferred. Going to be a tough tax bracket….

On a sad note, I learned yesterday an old friend whom I had not seen for some time passed away last week from a heart attack. Only 53…. I had dated his sisters when I was a teenager so I had known him a long time. Sad really, so young… His son and my youngest son both live within a block of each other in Florida. Small world really….

I had lunch with “Richbrave” yesterday. Some of you will recognize the moniker from the blog across the street. We are planning to attend the Braves game in DC on the 21st. Thought it would be a nice diversion. If we can get the chance and the moon and the stars all line up properly we are going to drive down to Norfolk to see Tommy Hanson pitch against the Tides. I think that will be around the 18th or 19th of April.

Catch up with you fine folks later….

Well, so much for taking off on the only day without rain. It rained. It’s supposed to rain every day of Spring Break but one. Stinks for the kids. Stinks for Mrs. Raisins, too. 🙄

We did get there and walk up the mountain before the rain started. Of course, it rained a little as we started back down, but not too much.

My 6-year-old really wanted to play on the massive Stone Mountain playground, but rain did put the kabosh on that. It also forced our outdoor picnic under cover, and ultimately cut the whole outing short. The rain, of course, stopped after we got home. 😐

Overall, though, it was great to spend at least part of the day at the Big Rock with my wife and kids. It’s funny… as a teenager, I hung out at Stone Mtn. almost every weekend, and alot during the week. I never thought then that I’d hang out there with my KIDS. Cool…

Gil, sorry to hear about your friend passing. Way too young.
And V, sorry your day wasn’t what it could have been.
I remember going to Daytona with my Dad once(long out of school) and all it did was rain. Kinda defeats the point of the beach if you can’t get on it…

    from Bowman’s blog:
“Unable to take batting practice because of a potential rainstorm that never arrived, the Braves spent the past couple of hours rehearsing for the inevitable long rain delays that await them this year.

Jeff Francoeur grabbed a fishing pole and threw his line into a pond that is located just outside the visitor’s clubhouse here at Osceola County Stadium and came away with 6-pound, 4-ounce largemouth bass, that was slightly bigger than Kris Medlen.” 😆

At least y’all got to hang out together, VOR. A lot of people don’t bother to do anything with their kids. That probably contributes in part to them turning into the people that Gil mentioned earlier.

Gil, I’m in favor of the “eye for an eye” system. Make the punishment fit the crime by doing to them what they did to others. Assault? Prepare to have the snot beaten out of you then work on a labor gang ’til you pay off all your victim’s medical bills. Rapists & child molesters would be castrated (& I don’t mean chemically, I mean hire Lorena Bobbitt).

“….Obama ditched the high-end labels for a more budget-conscious outfit by J. Crew. The first lady was seen wearing the retailer’s champagne-colored “Crystal Constellation Cardigan Cardigan” — priced at $298 — and the “Perfect-fit tank” for $18. The first lady also sported a mint green pencil skirt, valued at $158.

With the exception of her shoes — which were not from J. Crew — Obama’s outfit cost just under $500.

“That’s her style — she’s practical. Michelle Obama looks chic, but very accessible, and the average woman feels like she can dress like her.”

Uh…my entire wardrobe wouldn’t cost $500…… much less ONE outfit!

SEATTLE — The Department of Homeland Security freed 27 illegal immigrants arrested during a workplace raid in February and offered them legal work permits, signaling a major departure from the immigration enforcement policy of the Bush administration.

The Feb. 24 raid of an auto parts plant in Bellingham, Wash., netted 28 illegal immigrants. While one was deported, the remaining workers were released from custody and given employment authorization documents, or EADs, in exchange for cooperating with an ongoing investigation of their employer, Yamato Engine Specialists.

Well, Blanco isn’t the best outfielder in the world, but he can play CF, he can bunt, he has a very good OBP. Still don’t know why they played Diaz about what they payed G.A. Well, I guess they signed him early on, right???

Infante can play CF; Diaz can play RF.

FrenchVanilla will play virtually every day unless he’s hurt. If he’s hurt, someone will get called up, or Diaz will take it until he’s ready.

Schafer will play most days unless he struggles, in which case he won’t stay here on the bench, rather he’ll be sent down to play every day. My guess is that Bobby will get Infante playing time in CF once every 10 games or so. You know he loves to keep his bench guys sharp by getting them a start here and there.

Blanco is a perfect example of why I hate stats. He had decent numbers, but what exactly did he do well? When did he get he a big hit? When did he take over a game? When did he make you go, “Wow”? He didn’t even play defense that well. He gets bad jumps off the bat and he takes bad routes to the ball. He’s fast, but can’t steal bases. He does alot of things OK, but nothing outstanding. He is extremely average.

V, I know you know love stats, 😛 but Blanco’s 74 walks were second to only Chippers 90 walks so he can do that. Plus, he’s the best bunter on the team.

After looking at the southpaw’s stats this spring(Hey I found some stats!) I think we might as well go with 11 pitchers…

Would you rather have Gary Sheffield on the bench, or Greg Norton? Norton did an outstanding job last year as a PH. Shef ought to scare any pitcher any time he steps up to the plate. Of course, would Shef be happy with a reserve role at this stage of his career?

I think Texas is taking a chance on a guy who suffered from the same thing Francouer suffered from. Looks like Rudy might become the most sought after hitting coach in the major leagues if he pulls these two out of their doldrums… Would be worth it too….

Shef won’t sit for long, he might not be on an opening day roster but I am pretty sure that by May there will be plenty of clubs looking for a right handed power bat. Especially at bargain basement prices.

Shef clears waivers at 1:00p, less than 1/2 hour. Betcha he signs somewhere within 24 hours. He wants playing time; I doubt a reserve role anywhere will be desirable. Betcha he gets playing time somewhere…

Too bad he doesn’t fit our roster. His right handed power would be nice in the lineup. Not sure how durable he is anymore, though. He really needs to DH. Can’t think of who still needs one, but then I don’t give alot of thought to the AL anyway…

I think Andruw suffers from Cranial/Anal Inversion. He can’t get his head out of his #$% to receive a coach’s instructions. He’s long been too stubborn to change his ways. When pitchers finally found the very large hole in his swing, Andruw obliged by making it larger. I think he’s done…

By all indications, Jeffrey actually is coachable. It may save his still promising career. I’m hopeful for a strong comeback season. I think Andruw will be released before the ASB.

(I also subscribe to the theory that he may be older than reported. All of the facts line up. He broke in early, accomplished alot early, flamed out early. No proof – just sayin’.)

I hope he gets a lot of playing time as a super sub in Detroit.
    From ESPN’s fantasy info…

    ESPN Fantasy Projection
    2009 Season Outlook
Anderson has had consecutive strong seasons in Triple-A — one in the Astros chain — and it’s clear what his skill set is. The left-handed hitter hits for average and has stolen more than 40 bases in each of his past four seasons. He lost out to Jordan Schafer for the center-field job in Atlanta, but that could turn out for the best as he was acquired by the Tigers in a trade. Detroit definitely wants to capitalize on Anderson’s speed and even cut Gary Sheffield so that they could put Anderson in the outfield so they can rest Carlos Guillen a bit by inserting him as the team’s DH. He’ll play whenever possible and will get the green light, so bid accordingly.

Some observations from the ‘Left Coast’:
    1. Average American – I intensely dislike that term, especially from another American…and doubly so from a gov’t official. They above all, should understand what it means to be an American, the sacrifices that Americans have made, not only for the USA, but for the ultimate democracy (?) of a more peaceful world. There has never been anything ordinary about America: the day we accept our country/people as ordinary…we’re back to the beginning.

2.They think everybody else is too stupid to catch it. ‘Cause, after all, they are SO much smarter than the rest of us peasants.
Vote them out of office. Never presume the other state/districts representative/senator is less capable than your own. Keep your eyes wide open and see, don’t imagine.

    3. How long before he dons camos and acts like the banana republic dictator he adores?
Full disclosure, Gil: Initially, I felt your observation was harsh; however, I told a colleague today that I admire confidence…really do. That said, confidence absent humility scares me. I see nothing humble, no humility whatsoever. What I witness troubles me…not the change, but the singular transformative agenda the Man seems to have. I don’t mind change…I am troubled by change that seems to be ‘in our best interests’ absent our having a voice. Disappointed to say the least…more so, getting a bit scared.

    4. Instead of fighting over water all the time…
If we can put a man on the moon…why should we live with floods…or drought?

    5. He (Blanco) does alot of things OK, but nothing outstanding. He is extremely average.
Said another way: if he was on another team…would we notice? Would we even know he was on a roster? Good catch, VOR.

Good points, Salty. Most troubling to me is the incredible amount of SECRECY and trying to slip extremely important legislation through Congress. Sneakiness. (What happened to the “transparent” administration??) 9 out of 10 of them haven’t a clue what they are voting on. THAT is gross negligence, IMO. Informed voting, not just voting a party line.

Bipartisanship from BHO: forget your own ideas, just do it my way without question. After all, I know what’s best; you don’t.

And I’m already tired of him apologizing for America! Apologizing for what?? Paying billions to them every year for “foreign aid”? What “foreign aid” does Saudi Arabia, Egypt, etc need? Whenever one of them needs something, the USA is the first one there – and they snatch it from our hands while cursing us. What’s up with that??

Getting back to the main point – Congress: we voters HAVE to vote them OUT. Every one of them.

Salty, harsh it may be but he has not exactly shown me that he admires the same folks that I do.

CL, I survived perhaps the meanest dirtiest politics you can ever imagine by running for office in a large union. While not exactly the UAW, we still had some pretty shady characters. Tough job tilting all those windmills, especially those that fought back. Still, I had enough sense to realize the company had to make a profit to stay in business. Did not like greed however. You have no idea how many times I had to save some fool from corporate from ruining the business because they did not think things through…

Our current POTUS is like that, still naive to the dealings of some pretty shady characters. However, it is all he has known, how evil the fat cats are and how bad the US is.

With all the bashing of corporate CEO’s (and honestly, some of them need bashing) I see eerie parallels to Chairman Mao’s “Era of Enlightenment”… Get the mob riles up and let them do the deed.

And baseball…. Good looking team assembled by the Braves this year if they can stay healthy. It will be exciting to watch them hit singles and doubles to score runs. Not that homeruns are not exciting, just as a fan of the National League, I love good pitching a defense and those snappy 2-1 and 3-1 games that finish in under 3 hours…

    Good morning Stuffville.

Up before the crack ‘o dawn, getting a head start on another busy day and figgered I’d pop in and say hey. Hay! BAS time zone… he’s probably knocked the top off of an empty whisky bottle over at Jack London’s and is just headed for bed.

One thing about being swamped with work… you catch less of the news. It’s all so parsed, recycled and analyzed so much that you can miss a few days and not miss anything of substance.

So, speaking of newsy substance, did the Royal Highness, the Queen touch Her Royal Highness, the First Lady first or did our Chosen One, the Fashion Goddess start a new trend? Enquiring minds want to know. Maybe Larry King will straighten this out. Sheesh.

Gil, we sure had a good soaking here the last few days, as did CL and Klobber. Not sure of the details but I heard that Georgia has caught up on water levels since the drought. Me, I’ve enjoyed every drop.

Came at a perfect time. Just pruned, moved and transplanted about a half dozen azaleas, finally planted an orange tree I started from a seed and have been growing in a pot for about three years and also did some massive yard sprucing up, weeding, pruning, mulching, etc. This deluge we’ve had came just after all the transplanting. That’ll help a lot.

We had so much rain you could almost watch the grass turn greener.

Why all the yard work? Well, that’s a long story… but since I’m inclined to tell those, I’ll go ahead. It’s kind of a village story. No, not Village People and certainly not the Hillary type, although I wish somebody would steal her title, which I like, and write the book the title should belong to. Anyway, I got a call from a friend that had hired a fella who lost is job recently due to a company layoff due to the economy.

This black gentleman is not a lawn maintenance guy by trade, but he was looking for work… any work, to support his family, pay his bills and bide him over until he could find work again in his field of air conditioning installation and service. He’s a very good worker. He does a thorough job and he does it fast. Amazing what one motivated person can do in a day. Haven’t seen that in lawn workers or in typical day labor in a long, long time.

He could take the attitude of dragging his feet to lengthen the work hours, but he’s been zipping right through. Thanks me for the work when he arrives and thanks me when he leaves. Great attitude. As a result, all of the neighbors want him to do work for them too. He’s about to finish up here, since I’ve given him things I’d take months or even years to get around to. Hard stuff. Stuff I hate doing.

When it started to pour down rain, another neighbor asked if he could help with some inside work. Painting I think. Rain or shine, there is always work for those that want work. It’s not always easy, but it is honest. He’ll be back today to finish my place and move next door. By the time he’s done the rounds, if he hasn’t found another job, I’ll find something else he can help with. I’m thinking of bordering my vegetable garden with railroad ties.

As a result of his situation, his attitude and his price of ten bucks an hour and his work ethic of ten hours a day, he has the whole neighborhood lined up. Next he’ll move to another neighbors yard and then down the street a few lots over. By the time he’s found another job in his field, he’ll have a tough decision; hire someone to help with the lawn work and invest in a lawn mower and tools and make a go of it or return to installing AC’s. The way he’s going, he’ll have a choice… because he chose to work hard. No standing in line for the stimulus welfare checks for this guy.

And before y’all even ask; no, he can’t drive to Atlanta, Charleston, Wilmington or Mechanicsville. Too far from family. It’s just some good old-fashioned free enterprise at work in this village on the coast.

See y’all later. Keep the powder dry.

Repko, a right-handed hitter, could have platooned with Schafer or Gregor Blanco, both of whom hit from the left side.

The teams could revisit the possibility later.

Great story, Hillbilly. I get tired of hearing about college “student-athletes” majoring in PE. 🙄

    FBG,

I forgot to add the best part of that story. In high school, he struggled academically. He needed help to make the grades, and I’m not talking about the star-athlete kind of special treatment that usually takes place. I’m talking about real genuine teach-and-learn kind of help to get him going in the right direction. From there, he took off with it on his own, and now he’s only a couple of years away from a friggin’ doctorate. I was amazed when I read that this morning.

Braves supposed to make final roster cuts after tonight’s game. Hopefully we’ll get the press release before too late.

Earlier in the year, I would have taken umbrage(blog first?) at us being picked so low…but, you know what??? After watching about 2 hours of baseball tonight…last night, and seeing all the talent the Marlins have, all the power arms they have in the starting rotation….They are going to be very tough.
Steve Philips (I know, Mr. Accuracy) said the Phils win, the Mets get the wild card, Braves 3rd, Marlins 4th, but he said all 4 teams will be in the hunt all season long.
What I would disagree on is the wildcard team coming out of the east. IF the starting pitchers on all 4 teams stay reasonably healthy this year, you might see the teams all beat up on each other and the top team only win 86-88 games.

CL, I just read that before my post(But, I am trying to cook and write, so that was about 30 minutes ago!)
Really don’t get it. I keep hearing how Daniel Murphy reminds scouts of Don Mattingly. I guess they will use him in left, right and pinch hitting.
Steroid usage or no, he’s P.O’ed and he likes to play with a chip on his shoulder, and will scare some pitchers.

    ajc:

    The Braves’ 25-man roster is:

Pitchers: Right-handers Jeff Bennett, Blaine Boyer, Jorge Campillo, Buddy Carlyle, Jair Jurrjens, Kenshin Kawakami, Derek Lowe, Peter Moylan, Rafael Soriano and Javier Vazquez and left-handers Mike Gonzalez and Eric O’Flaherty.

    Catcher: Brian McCann and Sammons.

Infielders: Yunel Escobar, Omar Infante, Kelly Johnson, Chipper Jones, Casey Kotchman, Greg Norton and Martin Prado.

Outfielders: Garret Anderson, Matt Diaz, Jeff Francoeur and Schafer.

Gregor Blanco and Brandon Jones, were optioned to Class AAA Gwinnett.

The Braves announced the odd men out in their bullpen would be left-hander Boone Logan, who has struggled with his control, Manny Acosta, who hasn’t been the effective pitcher he was early last season, and Kris Medlen, whom the Braves want to get more seasoning. Logan and Acosta were optioned to Class AAA Gwinnett. Medlen was sent to minor-league camp.

Backup catcher David Ross will open the season on the disabled list because of his strained right groin. Clint Sammons will begin the season as Brian McCann’s backup. Tom Glavine, Charlie Morton and Tim Hudson will also open the season on the disabled list.

Good for Schafer. He worked hard and earned that job. Now, let’s hope he can do it in the regular season. I believe he will.

The G-Braves will field quite a team this season. With Blanco, BJones and Diory Hernandez, and eventually Clint Sammons, not to mention the pitchers, they ought to have a strong roster.

Braves win 3-1. JV was perfect in his 4 innings – 40 pitches, 30 strikes.

Any reason given for Javy only pitching 40…pitches???(Something’s wrong with that line, but with as little sleep as I have had, I don’t care! 😛 )

And V, you were right, 12 pitchers. Really don’t get it early in the season. And what would we have done if we had gotten that so-so at best outfielder from the Dodgers??? Release Norton???

    Maybe “throwing” 40 pitches, Ber?

And Bobby was probably being cautious, saving him for a meaningful game. Besides, gotta leave some work for the other 11.

But, they are called pitchers, not throwers! Little sleep…did I mention that fact???
Well, it’s just weird. I have heard of several pitchers going 6 innings with the extended spring training, and he also pitched in the WBC.
You know the season is just about to start when Berigan is constantly criticizing Bobby’s moves! 🙂

Hey V, Salty…isn’t it great that the Braves are going to be on yet another FM station this year??? Let’s see, they were on 96 rock, then that country station last year, now to 96.1 the buzz, which used to be 96 rock. Did I miss a station???
