❓ What happened ❓
Garret Anderson came to Atlanta with the reputation of a solid player who produced good numbers, went about his business professionally. Fans and fellow players alike described him as humble and quiet, a person of excellent quality.
He may be, probably is, just that. But we’ve seen precious little of him from day 1.
Signed Feb 22, he didn’t play until Mar 5. The very next day he came up with an injured calf muscle and was out until the very end of March.
Now it’s a strained left quad and on the DL.
According to MLB.com stats, Anderson has produced over the last ten games:
4/05/09 vs PHI: 4 AB, 1 hit, 0 rbi, .250 avg
4/07/09 vs PHI: 4 AB, 1 hit, 0 rbi, .250 avg
4/08/09 vs PHI: 1 AB, 0 hit, 0 rbi, .222 avg
4/10/09 vs WSH: 1 AB, 0 hit, 0 rbi, .200 avg
4/14/09 vs FLA: 4 AB, 0 hit, 0 rbi,. 143 avg
4/15/09 vs FLA: 1 AB, 0 hit, 0 rbi,. 133 avg
4/16/09 vs FLA: 4 AB, 2 hit, 0 rbi, .222 avg
4/17/09 vs PIT: 1 AB, 0 hit, 0 rbi, .211 avg
4/18/09 vs PIT: 4 AB, 0 hit, 0 rbi, .174 avg
4/19/09 vs PIT: 2 AB, 1 hit, 0 rbi, .200 avg
This just has to be an aberration. Garret is the Angel’s career leader in hits, runs, doubles, RBIs and total bases. That just doesn’t evaporate overnight. Last year he hit .293, 15 homers, and .758 OPS for the Angels.
So, what is it? The switch from AL to NL? Just suddenly developed muscle problems? The Braves’ misfortunes continuing?
I would find it very hard to believe that a person of his long-standing, high-caliber character would develop “Sheffield-like” attitudes and demeanor. Doesn’t fit. I have to believe that he has been beset by some physical difficulties and will eventually live up to our expectations.
I’ll admit to being purely shocked by Bowman’s assessment of him as a left-field manikin and as blank and emotionless in person. No explanations there.
Though something is obviously going on with him, I’m nowhere near ready to disrespect him or give up on him.

I’m with you, CL…not (quite) ready to throw GA under the bus. I’ve always thought him to be a classy ballplayer…goes about his business…no showboating. However, I would equally hate to think he’s sulking…doesn’t fit with his career. Still….hmmm. 🙄

“Tom was unable to hold me or the children or perform the husbandly

move caused him terrible pain. We prayed as the doctors performed
a delicate operation, and it turned out they were able to piece
together the crushed remnants of Tom’s scrotum, and wrap wire
around it to hold it in place.”
Again, the men in the congregation were unnerved and squirmed
uncomfortably as they imagined the horrible surgery performed on
Tom. “Now,” she announced in a quavering voice, “thank the Lord,
Tom is out of the hospital and the doctors say that with time,his
scrotum should recover completely.”
All the men sighed with relief. The pastor rose and tentatively
asked if anyone else had something to say.
A man stood up and walked slowly to the podium. He said, “I’m
Tom.” The entire congregation held its breath.
“I just want to tell my wife that the word is sternum.”
No doghouse…right? 😕

Utilizing a training program arranged by his agent, Scott Boras, Anderson spent the past three months strengthening his legs, and he feels he’s reporting to camp stronger now than at any other point of his career.
“Strength-wise, I’d say I’m probably in better shape, because there was a more specific type of weight training that I did,” Anderson said. “Plus, I spent more time on my feet running than I usually do. So my legs are where they need to be now, as opposed to working my way through Spring Training to get ready for the season.”

Thanks for the new blog CL! I would like to see G.A. get well, pound the ball, and not be talking about his fire level.
There is a pattern though, of players, HOF’ers even, that after playing all their career with one team, fail and retire in a year or so with a new team.
Hank Greenburg. His last year in Detroit in 1946, he hit 44 HR’s and 127 RBI’s at the age of 35.
After being traded to the Phillies in 1947, he hit 25HR’s drove in 74, and hit only .249

Ralph Kiner lead the league in homers for 8 straight years in Pittsburgh. Was traded mid season, and was out of baseball at the age of 32, less than 3 years later.

I think the problem lies with his ‘leg strengthening’ regimen. Stronger but less flexible = muscle injuries.
When will they learn?????? Seems that everybody who has tried that ‘strengthening’ stuff has a terrible following year. I sure hope he realizes that before the whole year is shot. Boras strikes again! (Why would he decide that Garret needed that set of exercises?? Weird!)

If you’ve ever worked for a boss that reacts before getting the facts and thinking things through, you will love this!
Arcelor-Mittal Steel, feeling it was time for a shakeup, hired a new CEO. The new boss was determined to rid the company of all slackers. On a tour of the facilities, the CEO noticed a guy just standing around and leaning against a wall. The room was full of workers and he wanted to let them know that he meant business. He asked the guy, “How much money do you make a week?”
A little surprised, the young man looked at him and replied, “I make $400 a week. Why?”

CL, that’s interesting about the leg strengthening program, just might be something to that!
The only programs any Major leaguer should follow is the one Jamie Moyer is on(I see him sprint after a bunt, and think he’s going to pull something, but he never does)
Or the one that I think both Justin Morneau and Dustin Pedroia use. Core strength training, that Pedroia swears kept him from breaking down late in the year.
Saw some of the stuff he did, pretty intense. Of course, he and Morneau are younger as well.

Good morning all, yes folks, flexibility seems to be the key when it comes to baseball…
Interesting game last night, Braves scoring two runs without the benefit of a hit. I recall the Braves being on the opposite end of one of those walk-a-thons… And the Frenchman hitting a solo homer. Good to see a little power return.
In the sure… but what have you done for me lately department… Sorento did not look so effective last night but Gonzo looked very sharp. Opposite of what we saw in DC. Strange game eh?

Good lead CL and dittos. And the Boras exercise regimin post too… may very well be part and parcel with these lingering calf/quad problems.
Bowman is a twirp. So typical of many sports media types, most of whom couldn’t get a spot in their high school or college as a writer or a waterboy, to be dismissive and condescending if a player doesn’t react to them the way they think they deserve. On sports blogs you expect that kind of slight on a player’s personality, but like the vulgar slob reporter in LA last year (ranting about “fat” AJ), Bowman doesn’t deserve to get twenty feet from any player.
Even though he’s been a great player for many years, I wasn’t one that was excited about signing Garrett, but not because of his demeanor. Was just wanting someone a bit younger. There’s a lotta field out there in left for old legs. Wonder if he can play first base?

Gil, yes, it sure was a strange game last night. The strike zone was about 6 inches wide and 4 inches high. Gotta love those walks. What was it until French hit the dinger, 24 innings without a Braves run other than from walks? The kids are pretty tentative and probably too patient at the plate so far.
Soriano is a loose cannon. Gonzo looked his best yet. French seems to have a new lease on life. Kelly still hesitates too much on good hitter counts and pitches he should crush to be high in the batting order. Yunel is lost. Kotchman looks like he just can’t time pitches or something. Chipper looked hung over, or sore, or tired or something. Schafer is what, 14 years old? Diaz looked dazed and confused. Vazquez pitched his heart out and did great. He looks like Tony Almeda, Jack Bauers nemesis on ‘24’.
The thing about growing older and people reminding you of other people… at some point, everyone you see reminds you of someone you’ve seen before. Many faces in the ol’ memory bank I s’poze.

Yes, many folks remind you of someone they have met before. Isn’t that how Miss Jane Marple solved all her murder mysteries? And isn’t high definition amazing? Man, do these guys look old or what?
I am headed over to my mom’s house today to mow the lawn and pick up around the place. I really should try to sell it but no use going down that path until it is absolutely necessary. Sometimes you have to pick your battles wisely, it is not that I could not win that one, just don’t know that it is worth the effort.
In the meantime, I will just enjoy this beautiful day….

To answer my own question:
David Ross, who is regarded as a strong defensive catcher, will handle the primary catching duties for the Braves while McCann is sidelined. Entering Saturday, Ross had four hits, including a homer and a double, in 12 at-bats this year. Thank you, Mr Bowman.

Likely a lot of fingers rubbing the eye, all the various ‘treatments’ – plenty of opportunity for an infection to be introduced.
Sometimes seems that the Braves just can’t get everyone healthy at the same time.

I just watered the garden. All the ‘maters and peppers are happy. The okra sprouts are popping up everywhere, right on time. The cantaloupe is perky. The herb garden is watered and standing up all perky and fluffy.
I just got bit by 8756 mosquitos. The gnats joined in too, where they could find room. My back hurts from picking up heavy timbers and bending over the garden all day yesterday. My shoulder hurts from hoisting railroad ties off of the truck bed. Now my arms and legs are itching. My allergies seem to be kicking in. Sneezing. Itching. Feeling faint. Must have more coffee.

Anybody else out there noticed that they make shirts different these days? Back in the day there was plenty of room all around… almost baggy in the middle. Maybe they are doing that to save material. But the way they cut them differently and narrow them, they’re tighter around the midsection. Pants too. For some odd reason, they’ve changes all the waste sizes so that, what was once a 32 is now a 36 or 38. French influence?

It’s the exchange rate, SG! Improved, though! I worried when the Euro hit $1.60 to the dollar…meant my waist had gone to 42! I’m much happier now…best diet I’ve ever experienced!

Might be on the DL…might be on another team. Terry may be talking in the now…or in the past. For sure, what he’s saying is Yunel plays the game the way Terry did. Don’t suppose Terry said anything to Lowe before yesterday’s game…do you? Then again, Derek Lowe probably understands his job…and what ‘team’ means. And with all due respect, so does Joey Votto…kudos to both…get it done and over with…play the game…share a beer/Diet Coke afterwards! 😆

Dear Diary,
Today I was finally able to relax and watch a Braves game in it’s entirety. There I was, inside with the ac cranked up, away from skeeters, comfy couch, HD TV, Diet Coke and peanuts right there. All set. The snacks disappeared by the second inning.
After Cincy got 8 runs and remembering Skip’s advice on many occasions in situations much like today, I decided to walk the dog, so to speak. The ‘dog’ consisted of more garden and yard work. More pesky skeeters, more gnasty gnats.
There is no rest for a Braves fan or a gardener.

Man. I hate it when I get awakened by my cranky legs in the middle of the night…. Well, let’s see, since I am now awake, I might as well blog.
Josie and I are going to take a little road trip today. Driving down to the Chesapeake Bay to look at a cottage. Any excuse I always say. With temperatures in the 90s it seems a good idea. If I stayed home I would just be goaded into working around the house.
Now baseball…. We all knew the Marlins would come back to the pack at some point didn’t we? And the Nationals showed what they could do if they had better pitching. That kid Zimmermann looks to be a real keeper. Not so sure the Mets think the same of Pelfrey.
And Tampa Bay is not going to sneak up on folks again this year but I predict they will not play sub .500 baseball all year. Too many good young arms in that organization for them to fail.
And NASCAR… The circus come to Richmond this week. It is going to be tough for them to top the finish they had in ‘Dega… Lucky Carl Edwards’ car stay on the track and did not fly into the stands. I can remember attending a local race when a car actually flipped over the flag stand. Scary stuff for the flagman. Yes, auto racing is a dangerous sport but that is part of the draw. A lot like going to watch the Monster Trucks Show… but different…

Upon the advice of Mr. Bear, I will send word to south Georgia about skeeter spray. Maybe there’s a little skeeter supply story in Cairo or Thomasville that could warn people there. As for Savannah and the rest of eastern, coastal Georgia, they sell skeeter spray and ‘no seeum’ lotion all over the place. Me, I prefer the bites to the sticky smelly ‘pison’, ‘specially when I’m all sweaty and stuff.
Maybe I’ll run down to the Google store and find a map of Georgia so I can send one to Mr. Bear. 😛

Well, I’ve got this little device that I bought from a catalog that emits a sound that I can barely hear that drives biting bugs away.
A couple of years ago I hired two men to do some outside work for me. They were getting eaten alive. I fetched the 2 “skeeter-gitters”, gave one to each man, they worked without bites the rest of the day.
The purchase from the catalog was around $6 or so for both devices. WELL worth it. No spray, no lotion, no bites.

What a weekend! I missed most of what happened with the Braves this weekend. I traveled with my band to Murfreesboro, TN, to compete in Legacy Productions’ “Battle for Christ” battle of the bands on Saturday. We were one of ten bands to compete in this round, and came in 3rd… moving on to the semi-finals.
There was quite an assortment of bands there – everything from straight Praise & Worship to College Rock to Southern Rock to Hardcore (Scream-o) to Contemporary Christian to Classic Rock… all with a Christian message. There were musicians anywhere from teenage to 50something. Folks from as close by as Murfreesboro to as far away as New Jersey.
We had a blast. Now if we can just solve our drummer’s schedule conflict for the next round… 😯

KJ is getting killed across the street. I have to agree, though, that he simply isn’t cutting it at leadoff. It may be time to go ahead and give Schafer a shot at it. I’ll tell yo something else, too, I’d do a couple of other things to the lineup that might not be so popular… including sticking Chipper in the cleanup spot. I have advocated it since before Spring, and I still do. OK…. here is my lineup; trash away…
1- Schafer (L) .380 OBP, 5 2B’s, 12 walks
2- Kotchman (L) .281 AVG, .361 OBP, only 6 K’s
3- Yunel (R) .295 AVG, .459 SLG, 2 HR’s

We still don’t know if our regular drummer can make it to the next round, in 2 weeks. If we have to take another drummer, we are toast. But, we’ll show up and make a go of it anyway. It’d just be nice to see how far we can get with our A lineup.

I tried to check in before & couldn’t get this thing to connect. Salty dear, please forgive me for missing your birthday. It’s been a whirlwind of cleaning, planting, laying tile, grouting tile, sealing tile & various other things that all seem to abuse my knees. Plus we had assorted relatives here over the weekend, so there was a lot of cooking too. Mom & Melissa headed back home today so it will be quieter now.

Our yard & garden are gorgeous. We got to see the end of the tulips & redbud and now the dogwood & azaleas are spectacular. Dad & I are planting many more azaleas, plus rhododendren, hostas, roses, etc. We have a native orange azalea next to the driveway that is so old it’s become a tree.

It sure is! I had no idea that it was available to whoever had the price to pay for it. Those are the ones the law should go after; it just shouldn’t be available over the web. Imagine the damage some wacko kids, who would really go for that sort of stuff, could do – to anyone they decided they didn’t like! Much less an adult wacko! If people knew about it, I bet some of them would turn the stupid things off! (Pet peeve: people in public constantly on their cell phones, blabbing, gossiping, mindless blather…)

CL… As annoying as that can be, it is the blabbering on a cell phone while driving that disturbs me the most. However, most grocery store clerks will double price some items if someone is on the phone while checking out as a matter of principle.

CLEARWATER, Fla. — A Florida high school pitcher is trying for his fifth consecutive no-hit game.
Mitchell High School senior Patrick Schuster will try to extend the streak Tuesday afternoon in a district tournament start in Clearwater.
The 18-year-old left-hander — who has already signed to play at the University of Florida — notched his fourth straight no-hitter last week in a win at home, setting a new Florida state record. His school is in New Port Richey, northwest of Tampa.
He last gave up a hit in a game on March 24.

Gil, Braves vs. Cards. My Dad was asking who I was rooting for. Like a Schizo (which after looking up Schizophrenia, it isn’t a split personality disorder, more a trouble comprehending reality-you learn a lot not being able to spell worth a darn!)
I would change my alliances inning to inning. I really wanted to get more than one run in when we had runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs…luckey we got the one run.
I don’t really like LaRussa, as I think I have mentioned before. But, you really have to tip your hat to the way his mind works. Never sits back, is always thinking. Hard to believe he’s only 3 years younger than Bobby.
I know it’s not all his doing, he hires very smart coaches, and gets players that think more or less the way he does, and follow a certain hard nosed style of play. Everything from the way the first baseman teases a runner into taking too big a lead…to playing Chipper so well… to having everyone in the outfield on the warning track to prevent a runner having a chance from scoring on a hit…just feel like the neurons are firing in his noggin all the time.

After being on this box since 5:30 am, had to check in with my Stuffville peeps before turning into a pumpkin. Or a pickle or a squash or sumpin’.
I always liked the Orioles too, while Cal was there. Saw them beat the tar out of us in interleague play at the Ted a few times and saw them play our team several times at Grapefruit in West Palm back in the day. Torasco gets that out he deserved that was denied by fan interference and the erroneous home run call, and they beat the Yanks and go to the big dance that year as they should’ve (too tired to remember the year). They were, by far the best team, uh, that year that I can’t remember.
Arlen Specter proved today that he is in public office for one reason and one reason only. And that reason has nothing to do with public service.

Good morning all, I have to agree with Berigan on his assessment of last night’s game. The Braves got beat by a bunch of bloops and dinks. The Braves did not beat themselves, it was just baseball. And the play at the plate that didn’t happen… Well, they gave up a run to get an out, Still would have been down a run if they had thrown Albert at the plate. If the Braves play like they did last night they will win a bunch of game too….

Funny story to tell, Stuff-villians (not to be confused with villains!)
I was officiating a high school soccer match yesterday…couple of small private schools…girls teams. One of the teams had a rather tall young lady…nice player, nothing stellar, but also very engaging. She and several players on both sides would banter lightly throughout the game.
Late in the match, after an injury, I had to drop the ball between ‘Miss Tall’ and a little firebrand on the other team. Well…much to my dismay, when they kicked the ball,it was directed at me…strategically below the waist! 😯
Obviously, just as in baseball when hit by a pitch, you don’t want to let anyone know it hurt ( it did!) by rubbing, which in this instance, was not an option! 😆 So, I carried on, as best I could until ‘normalcy’ returned a few minutes later.
Just a few minutes prior to the match ending, I noticed a spectator familiar to us all…which promptly (I’m an astute one…eventually! 🙄 ) helped me understand why the tall young gal was wearing #29. Seems Mr. Smoltz was able to rest his shoulder in time to get to his daughter’s game! 😆 Good for him!
And now you know…the rest of the story! (RIP, Mr. Harvey!)

I have to tell you, Smoltz seemed quite slimmed down…I don’t know that he has the mass he once had…and that could play with his durability. Then again…they may be targeting him for a post-trade deadline run…so he has another 10 weeks of spring training to get ready.

Now, I seriously doubt anything will come of this; however, I do feel this is very healthy for the nation. We must affirm state’s rights, in my view, as well as hold our elected officials accountable. Perhaps we’re entering a new era of an electorate that will be proactive in educating itself on the real issues, and be more amenable to siding with their fellow citizens on key issues of agreement to make tomorrow ‘better than today’.
That said, is there anything sacred about there being 50 states? We’re much more polarized than ever…can the gaps be bridged, or, can state’s rights restore some measure of regional content? Interesting times…perhaps to become more interestinger! 😯 (That last word is Stuff-villian talk…only special people get it! 😆 )

Fox blessed me with the Phillies -Mets game today… Likely will get the Red Sox vs Tampa game next week. I may as well plan on not seeing the Braves play if they have a Saturday game.

Ryan Ludwick, 6 HR’s 21 RBI’s, .280 BA. Thank goodness we didn’t trade KJ for him, where would we be then?? Besides first place. 😛
Pat the Bat Burrell. 1 HR, 11 RBIs .263 BA in a new league. 7 Million. don’t know, quite the streaky hitter, but might have been worth the risk.
Ken Griffey Jr. 2 Hr’s 5 Rbi’s .190 BA. We all wanted him, but it looks like we were pretty lucky to not get him after all.
Nick Swisher, 7 HR’s 19 RBI’s .312 BA. I seem to recall we wanted him, perhaps we just didn’t want to give up anything for him????
Am I forgetting anyone??? Oh yeah, some guy yours truly wanted the braves to sign, but the braves weren’t interested in, cuz he’s old and bats left handed, and would cost money to sign.

Berigan, sometimes folks are afraid to pull the trigger, like looking at a called third strike… Of course there have been times I have not followed through on a good idea because I just did not have the money to do it. I think a lot has to do on how deep your pockets are.

Great topic as well. I stared at this team all off-season with a faint depression and expectation of hopelessness that just couldn’t out way the homer in me. I still think this team could pull out a wild card birth. But Mr. Anderson is no Neo.
I don’t know what to think of him. His decline shouldn’t be too surprising. The Braves made a franchise off of keeping guys right up until they collapsed. Lately they’ve made a habit of bring guys in for the collapse but perhaps this is just the law of averages.
Today’s loss. I blame JoJo. The guy tossed a good game last week. But the truth is, most major league teams will get to him by the third time through the line up. Every now and then even a bad pitcher can toss a gem… again with the law of averages.
If this team had a thrumper or some wheeles, preferably both, then there would be no stopping them.
I still think Wild Card. I just don’t see the other teams maintaining high levels of production for considerable amount of time. Plus, not trading for guys like Swisher or the like in the off-season left the team with some capital for a mid-season trade… Just who that target will be is the question. I have a hunch that Matt Holiday will be up for grabs. Maybe even Maglio, but he is starting to show some age… who knows. Just keep within striking distance. Still plenty of time.

Hey 10Paul! You are right about the team usually getting rid of guys just before the decline(Or a bit too soon with Justice ) Wish they’d have tried Heyward at this point. Though honestly, G.A. could have driven in 100 behind Chipper…and I would have thought he would have a real chip on his shoulder to show the Angels they made a mistake. He is a 2nd half hitter. But I have a feeling Bowman is right this time….hope I am wrong about that.

Watching the braves play the White sox…I mean, the Rangers. Lets see, Elvis at SS, Andruw in Left, Matt Harrison SP, Salty has the day off.
Elvis a very slick fielding SS. Stole 3rd as well, putting him in within a SB of the braves total! 😕 Then as I was typing this they showed highlights of his excellent bunt. a 20 year old from the braves organization can bunt?? How about that!
Andruw had a key 2 out hit, then walked his next time up. Amazing. Harrison Pitched 5 shutout innings.
White Sox have a few ex braves as well. Betemit, Corky Miller(How can he still be in the majors-made a terrible throw to 2nd as well) They have Lil’bridge as well….Oh yeah, Dotel is pitching!!!

I can’t lay all the blame on JoJo, although he did his part. I thought Furman Bisher was spot on about the darth of talent in the minors for the Braves. Yes, they have a few bright spots but after watching Richmond for the last 42 years, I can see the decline. If they were stacked, they would have someone besides a journeyman minor leaguer like Barbaro playing first base for Gwinnett.

According to Boog, GA did not “refuse” the rehab assignment. Bobby offered him the option, and he didn’t feel as if he would need it. He says he’ll be ready to play tomorrow when he’s eligible to come off the DL. I suppose that is a little different than a refusal…

Schafer did fine the day he batted leadoff, then back to 8th when a lefty was pitching. 8th place is a tough place for anyone when you don’t really have to be pitched to. KJ was 0-4 battling leadoff. Why was he back at the top again?? .208 is 39 points lower than Schafer’s BA. KJ hit better down low in the lineup, and Schafer hit that one game he was the leadoff hitter.
Schafer also has a bad wrist he hurt opening day. Will Infante spell him, or will Bobby just keep running him out there every single day because like Frenchy, he’s young????

My assessment of tonight’s game, and beyond:
The Mets have Home Run power, the Braves have Warning Track power. Plain and simple. Gotta find an answer. If GA ain’t it, better come up with something else. Hopefully, the Bravos have stored away enough nuts to make a run at a bat at the deadline, assuming they are within striking distance. I think the pitching will keep them in the hunt, but it won’t carry them over the top. Gotta find some production somewhere. None in the system close enough to help. It may be time to start rattling the bushes to find a bat from a team in need of pitching.
Would you sacrifice an arm (not of the rotation) to get a bat? Gotta do something…

Gil, until they get someone in that lineup to protect Chipper – who is getting nothing to hit – they’ll continue to flounder. They can’t string enough hits together to get a runner past 3rd, and they can’t get that one additional gust of wind to push the ball over past the warning track. I hope that GA comes back and makes up all take a swig of shut-up juice. I really do. I also hope the glasses make the difference for Mac, but I am not too hopeful. That’s a major adjustment, folks. We need another bat. We need it bad.

What was your relationship with A-Rod?
NG: “I consider him a friend. When I came up to the team, he took me under his wing. I lived with him in his apartment in Manhattan for a couple of months and in the offseason I was with him down in Miami. At the time, his wife and his baby were living there and everything seemed great. The whole Rodriguez family was so kind to me.”
You always hear whispers about other players saying nasty things about him. Ever hear any of those things?
NG: “People are always trying to get me to say something bad about the guy, but there’s nothing bad to say. He was a great teammate as far as I could see. I know that he really helped younger guys all the time, especially Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera. What do you think about all the things that have come out about him?
NG: “He certainly admitted to what he admitted to, and I’m sure that was hard to do. Those are things he has to deal with, given who he is, and they’re much more magnified because of who he is. Opinions don’t seem to be tipping in book’s favor
Allegations made in the book “A-Rod: The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez,” to be released tomorrow, that Rodriguez had a reciprocal pitch-tipping scheme going with other players to guard against prolonged slumps do not seem plausible to several baseball veterans we asked.
The story goes that Rodriguez, in games that were out of hand, would relay the catcher’s signal to an opposing hitter, and A-Rod would get tipped off when he came to the plate.
Red Sox third base coach DeMarlo Hale, who coached Rodriguez with the Rangers, was dumbfounded by the allegations.
“I must have been looking at a different game if that was happening,” said Hale. “What I’ll say about Alex is this: He was one of the hardest-working players I ever coached or managed. Alex was a guy who really cared about winning. That’s what was in his heart.”
Former Blue Jays manager Buck Martinez also said he had a tough time believing it. His point was that so many players would have to be involved, how could it not have gotten out by now?
About a dozen scouts covering the Red Sox-Rays series in Tampa also were skeptical, many believing that Rodriguez has become an easy target, given the steroid admissions and some of his social habits.
Said a coach familiar with Rodriguez, “I hope that’s not true because I don’t know how he could pull that off without other people on our team knowing about it. He definitely ran our defense and he gave signs on the field to adjust. If someone mistook those signals for tipping off batters? I don’t know. Doesn’t make much sense to me.”Continued…

V, I forgot to mention Ankiel crashing into the wall…Scary indeed! What’s even stranger is I saw Ankiel a few days ago go backwards into the wall and hit it as he was falling …and I thought to myself, if he fell down a foot or so short of where he did, he would have hit it neck first! He may need to play it a bit more safely in the future. Hopefully he has no long term issues. I know there was some minor leaguer that ran into a wall(Probably less padded) that still has neck issues from that 10 years later…

Okay, so Andruw has lost a step and is no longer the preeminent centerfielder, but he is hitting the cover off the ball right now… hummm, which skill do you suppose will prolong his career? Which do you think the Braves signed Garrett Anderson for? Would like to think he could have helped the Braves this year but then he would have had Terry Pendleton as his hitting coach again, we all know how that is working out for the Braves right now don’t we?
I am becoming very frustrated with the Braves right now, I know it is still early but you can dig yourself into a hole like the Nationals have done and it is really difficult to dig your way out.

Well…glad you asked!!! There’s this kid see, Tommy Hanson, ever heard of him??? I was agreeing with everyone else, leave him down for much of the year, keep Bobby’s grimy hands off him…
Lets see what he’s doing at AAA. 1-3. Loser!!! Well, might as well look at his other numbers. in 6 starts, 32 innings, 21 hits. 12 walks, 48 strikeouts. 1.67 ERA!!! Players are hitting .179 against him.
They keep mentioning him on baseball tonight, saying things like he’s the best pitcher in the minors right now.
Sounds like a guy ready for the show.
I lot would depend on how well Glavine does rehabbing. We don’t want to have 2 holes in the rotation, but IF he’s healthy , Lowe, Jurrjens, Kawakami, Hanson, and Glavine looks pretty good…or Reyes having a good start every other game.
Or, we can just have a huge hole in the lineup…
V and G say Hayward is too raw yet…I forgot he’s still just in A ball. Surprised he isn’t at least in AA, but have to be careful I guess. Already seems like he gets it better than Andruw did…walking a fair bit…

Ber, TommyH will replace KK before the All-Star break… write it down. KK cannot make the adjustment to the ML game. Maybe I am selling him short too early, but he ain’t cuttin’ it now. JV will be OK. It is the ONE inning that gets him. When he’s on, he’s as tough as it comes. But that one inning… maddening.

Ber, the Braves have some very good pitching prospects right now but if you look at the number of position players who are major league ready or even have real major league potential, you will find that Furman Bisher was right in his assessment of the Braves’ minor league system.
I have watched these guys for a long time now, there is a reason a pitcher with a stellar ERA has a losing record… NO SUPPORT…

I am not that disappointed in the Braves pitching, it’s their hitting or lack there of that is stinking up the joint… Too many guys being left on base, just like the last three years….

I have been a staunch supporter of Kotchman. Dude can hit for avg., plays a stellar 1B, and is by all accounts a good guy and a good teammate. He would be just fine on a team with power elsewhere, but on this current version of the braves, his lack of power hurts us. He is cheap though, and could be a trading chip come July. Is it just me, or does Chipper look as though he has lost a bit at 3B. 4 errors already on the young season. Maybe it is time for the long talked about move across the diamond. Can’t replace the LF, he costs too much. No power stroking 1B’s appear to be available right now. Maybe an infielder? Something to keep eyes and ears open for.

I am a big fan of Bobby Cox but not so much of Terry Pendelton. At some point folks have to realize the common denominator as to the Braves’ lack of hitting prowess…

Other trade possibilities? Don’t be surprised if KJ isn’t mentioned. He still has upside, but can be replaced in ATL. He is a decent fielder, and a pretty good LH 6-8 hitter. The Braves are a team full of LH 6-8 hitters.
Ready for this? Diory Hernandez may be the Braves 2B of the near future. Good hands, steady if not powerful bat, arm not really good enough for SS or 3B. and he’s cheap. He is a projected #2 hitter with good bat control, good bunting skills, and decent speed. And guess what? He bats RH.
Write this one down also.

Gil, it is ironic you mention your support for Bobby and you disdain for TP as a hitting coach.
I heard some discussion yesterday on that very subject, and the talker was adamant that Bobby will NEVER fire TP. It’s a loyalty thing. And as much as I continue to support Bobby, I cannot support TP. The evidence is all aver the place. So if they really are joined at the hip, then what?
That is a conundrum…

I have been watching Diory for a couple of years now. He had an awful spring as far as his glove work. I like Kelly but he needs to be on a team that can use him to better effect, ie batting 6th or 7th and not lead off. I think there are several places he could flourish.
As far as folks being on the DL… That is part of the game, every team has issues, it is overcoming their shortcomings that makes a team great.

Kotchman seems just fine…but like you said V, may be on the wrong team, since this team seems so devoid of power. But, who’s going to give you anything for him??? Who is going to want a 1st baseman that doesn’t hit for power??? Might as well keep him and hope he starts driving in some runs.
And TP is the wrong guy to have as a hitting coach. I just looked up his OBP. .316!!! What worked for him, probably not so good for most hitters.
He still might make a fine manager, but I bet you anything Bobby has said when he retires, TP should be the next manager. Who was the hitting coach before TP?????

Did you guys know the Red Sox don’t have a single sacrifice this year??? They don’t believe in giving up outs. Think it cuts down on the chance of a big inning, making an automatic out.
I know, they don’t have pitchers hit there, but still….the numbers seem against someone getting a hit to drive in a run when you already have one or two outs.
Of course, what do the Red Sox know about winning of late??? It’s not like they get to the playoffs and the WS that often, right??? 😕

But I did read his lead from yesterday, y’all may have already seen this, but it seems to say to me someone shouldn’t ever bat leadoff again.
Kelly Johnson has been the primary leadoff hitter, and he’s 6-for-47 (.128) with one extra-base hit, two RBI and a .241 OBP in his past 14 games, with no steals and three double plays grounded into in that span.

KJ isnt a leadoff hitter, period. He has NEVER flourished as a LOH, and will not. My fear is that his progress may be being damaged by his remaining there.
Even with the K’s, I’d rather see Schafer there. It’s his at some point, anyway. Who needs the coddling more right now? Schafer or KJ? Swap ’em in the order and leave ’em there.
I am still adamant about batting Chipper 4th.
My order would be:

V, is Chipper being really stubborn, have you read he just flat out refuses to bat cleanup??? I would think after everyone pitching around him of late, he wouldn’t care where he was batting, if there were always runners on in front of him.

Diaz has returned to earth and is playing like the AAAA player he is. He is nothing more, nothing less. He doesn’t start on any team with aspirations of finishing anywhere in the hunt.
You know… I do believe that GA will hit at some point. He’s been too good over his career to just pull an Andruw and forget how.
The power dearth at 1B and everywhere else is just killing us. I thought with the team full of gap hitters, we could score runs that way. Can’t seem to string 2-3 hits together though. No power from KJ, none from Yunel, none really from Franc (although I am not complaining with his results), none anywhere. Can Georgia Power get the power restored at Turner Field with the expediency in which they restore power after a storm?

The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop and exports it to
an image processing facility in Hamburg , Germany .
Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot that the image has been
processed and the data stored. He then accesses an MS-SQL database through an
ODBC connected Excel spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry and, after a few
minutes, receives a response.
Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech,
miniaturized HP LaserJet printer, turns to the cowboy and says, “You have
exactly 1,586 cows and calves.”
“That’s right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves,” says Bud.
He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on with amusement
as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car.
Then the Bud says to the young man, “Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your

So, another good win by the Braves… That’s what it takes, jump on the other guy while he is down and not let up. Marlins will get this thing turned around but let them do it against someone else. Now, if the Braves can string a few more wins together they just might get a little streak going.

Most of the time when a manager is replaced, it has more to do with office politics than the answer given to the media (shaking things up)… How do you go from being the manager of the year to a bum so quickly? The answer usually lies with the guy supplying the talent (the GM) or the folks supplying the money (The owner) …

Still looking at stats. Our team BA is .259 and we know how bad it seems to have been. Well, the Diamondbacks team BA is .222, 16 points worse than any other team in the NL!!!
GA is batting .167, but it sure was nice to see him drive in 3 runs the other day.

Infante is producing at leadoff, KJ is producing low in the order. Kotch had a big day yesterday. How do you continue to get Omar AB’s when KJ is starting to hit in his best lineup position?
I still believe Omar is best utilized as the “super-utility” guy; his numbers will come back to earth the more he plays. But give Bobby credit for playing the hot hand.
Our lineup is still flawed in that we have too many 6-8 hitters in the lineup, and no 4, no 5.. No real leadoff, though Schafer did have a much better game yesterday. Yunel is OK at 2, but not enough real plate discipline. He’s a better 6 or 7. Chipper is a classic 3. Mac is really a 6, not even a 5. He requires time off, and that isn’t what you need from a consistent 5 hitter. No real 5, no real 4. That’s our hurt right now.

I have been thinking about the fact that A-Rod is still the only name which has been leaked to the media from the infamous list of 104 to date. OK – this is me – with my new HARDDRIVE and power source – and little else!
The data was saved (I had put it on a 12gb flash drive!), but ALL the programs are gone – including my email and addresses, etc.
It’ll probably take me a day or two to get everything back in ‘working order’ again – every setting, every program, everything I had fixed just the way I liked it….
But, at least I’m online (sorta) again! Have heard no news for the last week and haven’t a clue what’s been happening with the Braves. Are they in the basement yet??

I discovered that the best investment you can make is a little flashdrive. Thankfully, I had downloaded all the genealogy research, photos, music, and some other stuff so that wasn’t lost. If I had lost all that research I think I would just shoot myself! No way to be replaced! God bless the person who came up with the flashdrive!!

If they want attendance to increase, they need to field a winning team. Period. Firing Bob Melvin will not help the 12-17 D’Backs any more firing 2008 AL Manager of the Year Joe Maddon would help the 14-17 Rays. Conor Jackson is batting .191. Eric Byrnes is hitting .139. Chad Tracy, .221. Chris Young, .177. How is that Bob Melvin’s fault? His team couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat. And his ace Brandon Webb is hurt.
But they fire the manager.

Busy day for me today, just finished my last chore which involved Krogers…. Still, managed to pick up some flowers for my Mom and for Josie… No use spending any more time in the dog house any more than I already do.
Mom has made a request for lemon meringue pie for tomorrow. That item is on my tomorrow to do list, perhaps I could get LaTwan to help out… Then again, I guess not.
The weather service is calling for possible thunderstorms here this evening. Looks pretty iffy to me right now.
I think I shall call it a day and spend the rest of the afternoon in front of the boob tube. Free (HAH!!) HBO on DirecTV this weekend. Actually, it is on the same list as NBC as far as I am concerned with Bill Mahuer sp) Don’t feel the need to look up the correct spelling. Dirt bag is a name he answers to also….
Okay, off the soap box and to the couch as I think I hear it calling my name.

Hi gang, I hope everyone had an enjoyable Mother’s Day.
Good win by the Braves today. Not that I felt really confident the Phillies would not somehow comeback and steal a win but the pitching held and the offense was just good enough. Sounds like the recipe for success the Braves employed for many years.
Going to be tough to beat Santana tomorrow night but that is only one game. Braves can still take two out of three.
And Chipper day to day with a sore elbow. Get a cortisone shot and it will be good as new in a few days… uh.. players can still get cortisone shots, right?

Hey everybody! Another crazy weekend…
The Rock Of Christ Band finished 4th in yesterday’s semi-final competition – on to the finals next week in Loudon, TN. The competition was unbelievable, and next week is going to be SO rough. We are really going to have to step up a notch. I am very excited about getting this far. But the victory is already won, so the journey is just for fun.
Oh… and I missed the 2 wins against the Phils, but I am glad to know they have stepped up their game. GO BRAVES!

Ber, they were one of those non repairable models. I tried a couple of times but they were pretty iffy coming from the factory. My experience with them came from the version attached to the 460 Ford.
Sometimes I think it was a conspiracy by Ford engineers who were promoting fuel injection over carburetors.

Amazing how little info on that sucker there is on the web. Found one guy who took some so-so pictures with no description of issues he had. Every forum question was answered with, it’s junk, get a Holley or Edlebrock.
If I was rich, that’s what I would do as well.
Never have put a foreign carb on a car of mine before. Fear making the linkage world. Really wouldn’t want a Rube Goldberg paperclips and rubberband linkage.
So, before I put it all together and find out it still leaks gas, can I ask a question???
There was a check ball that was in the carb…somewhere. I must have taken it out before this picture was taken. The exploded view drawings are not helping me out, nor is the shop manual. Do you think it drops in that hole behind the brass tube between the primaries??? Theres another hole that sorta looks like it could drop in as well.
Oh, the other question (I guess I had more than one after all 😳 )the brass needle screw in thingy(Sorry if I am talking too technical for ya!) just seems to have a chrome “button” on the top, and no float needle!!! I have one in the kit, and I could imagine that might be a reason the gas level was too high, but I never have taken this apart before, and was at the table when I took it out.

Gil, here’s another photo of the brass thingy still screwed in. I was taking a picture of the brass plug that was in there. Couldn’t for the life of me figure out what it was doing there, but from the web it seems it was an aux. fuel needle, for the secondaries perhaps??? apparently, it was the “fix” for cars that would flow too much gas, and leak. I have a 2nd brass screw in thingy with a needle in the kit that fits where the plug is, but since I already have a gas leak issue, I probably won’t put it in.
Anyway, getting ahead of myself, the other brass thing with the chrome top I mentioned, is still screwed in , in this picture.
Nothing at all inside of it! Do you think there is any way in the world it could have flowed backwards into the fuel line??? I don’t see how, but nothing is in there….The replacement float needle is brass with a rubber tip, and as long as the brass screw in thing(Man, need to look up it’s name!)

And you know, all of those carbs had issues… Like I said, it’s why they went to fuel injectors. Of course, that doesn’t mean they are really that much better, just that you never needed to worry about fixing it yourself as it has become impossible.

It’s pretty cool outside today. The Darvocet has finally taken affect so I think I will crank up the old weed eater and trim around my fences. Important lessons learned as a paramedic, you cannot be addicted to pain medication as long as you are still in pain… The trick is to still be able to walk… or at least sit upright.

Well, that didn’t take too long… The hardest part was remembering the combination to the lock on the tool shed…
Doing stuff like using a weed eater reminds me of why I don’t play golf any more and makes me wonder why I never bought one of those long handled putters. Much less stressful on the lower back I would think. Hummmm…

Gil, thanks for that link! I found that info yesterday, but I didn’t know about CTRL ++ 🙂 Makes it a lot easier to read. Tried to print a few pages, but it came out a bit blurred. It’s sure better than the lincoln manual, which is kinda sad.
Going to take everything over to a friend of ours in boxes. He’s really smart just looking at things(He should be he’s a Delta mechanic!)
Hopefully he will help me get this sucker running. Or I will be maxing out a credit card for a carb. 😦

His bat? Gone… His presence? Gone… No knock on Kotch, who has done everything he is expected to do and then some, but he ain’t Chipper. Is it at least a valid talking point?
