OK… even tough I am covered up with work (when the secretary was laid off, I absorbed ALL of her duties) I have to pose this question:

Now that it is Chipper’s elbow, can we at least begin again the discussion about a move across the diamond? He will most likely miss tonight’s game solely because he cannot make a throw from 3B. His bat? Gone… His presence? Gone… No knock on Kotch, who has done everything he is expected to do and then some, but he ain’t Chipper. Is it at least a valid talking point?

This is such a complex issue, though. As you all know, Casey is productive. He hits; he doesn’t strike out; he does all of the little things right; he plays a phenomenal defensive 1B; he does everything you want BUT hit for power. And he isn’t Chipper.

The flip side is… who plays 3B? Omar? He isn’t an everyday guy. Prado? Maybe, but is he Kotchman on the other side? Nice bat, good gap hitter, but not the power you want from a corner IF? There is no clear 3B anywhere in the pipeline. Van Pope? Van Nope. Eric Campbell? Not close. Brooks Conrad is interesting, but he isn’t an “up and comer”. The fact is, the Braves have no long term fill in for a guy who isn’t likely to play more than 130 games, and is getting a bit “long in the tooth”.

I have tons of respect for Chipper Jones. I am not trying to hurry any natural or unnatural process along in any way, shape or form. But at some point reason has to rule over emotion. I think we are there. I think it has to be addressed.

Watching the Space Shuttle life off… Spectacular… Anyone else remember sitting around the TV in elementary school when Alan Shepard was launched into space? John Glen? Amazing…

Now baseball… Hey, Kotchman has value… Possible third base candidate, they could at least try him, or maybe they already have… for sure there are clubs that would be happy to get him, including the Angels…

Yes, Chipper should be seeing the hand writing on the old scoreboard. He is guaranteed a salary, not his position… Ask Soriano of the Cubs about that…

Hey, I’m a big Chipper Jones fan but even I know at some point a player has to hang up his spikes, well, except maybe Jamie Moyer… but everyone else has to.

Gil, took the carb to a friend, and you are right…it’s junk! He even noticed that the the secondaries don’t even close completely! Guess I have had that problem ever since I bought the car…seemingly no way to fix it, except to get parts off a junker, IF I could find one with a decent airhorn and accelerator pump clip…sigh…well, all is not lost. He’s a nice guy and had a Edelbrock 1406 just gathering dust on a shelf! Start looking at it…oh yeah, the Carter AFB, with a different name and a shiny body! 😀
Looks like whoever he bought it from had a few backfires thru it as it is black as night inside, but it will bolt right in…just got to figure the linkage issues out. Never done that before, but there is supposed to be an adapter plate of some sort…this saves me about $300 bucks I didn’t have to spend, so if it works, I’ll be one happy camper! 🙂

Speaking of carburetors, I really hope the Braves throttle Johan tonight. Maybe they’ll rev his pitch count up and he’ll be be gassed early. Of course, with their ‘pen, exhausting the starters doesn’t help too much. Maybe we can get some spark early in our lineup that will inject some torque into our offense and put the brakes on the Mutts’ hot streak. Yep, nothing I’d like to see more than our boys make the Mets’ streak turn on a dime. That could be the differential in the early standings. If the Braves can find their bearings in the new park, maybe they can drive a few runs across and neutralize the home crowd. I’m geared up for this one… how about y’all?

VOR, I wouldn’t count on Diory just yet. Everything that came his way today went Clank off his glove, it seemed. Kris Medlen, OTOH, was fantastic. He really looks like he knows how to pitch. Throws fairly hard for a smallish guy & appears to have good breaking stuff. Only 2 weak little hits off him today.

I reccommend a trip to Gwinnett for those of y’all within driving distance. It’s the nicest minor league/ spring training park either Dad or I have ever been too. I’m glad you enjoyed your trip FBG, Minor league ball can be enjoyable. Pretty good baseball and up close and personal and it is easy on the wallet. Did Barbaro play first? He had the same type of clanky glove…

For all the ink Tommy Hanson gets, I have a sneaky feeling that Medlen is going to be a long term solution for the Braves. He already knows how to pitch verses throwing.

And didn’t the Braves look good last night? Woo wee.. I finally switched over from the ESPN telecast to the SNY feed. The Mets announcers were better and less biased than the ESPN guys.

The runs off Santana may have been unearned but like Skip use to say, they still count. He reminded me a lot of JoJo in that he could not recover from a shaky defense.

    Rosenthal on the Braves:

If the Braves need more offense, they will have the pitching depth to get it. Right-hander Tommy Hanson (1-3, 1.99) is untouchable, but not the team’s only hot pitcher at Class AAA.
Two other right-handers — Kris Medlen (5-0, 0.96) and Charlie Morton (3-2, 3.44) — figure to be coveted by other clubs, and the Braves have additional prospects at Class AA.

IMO, Medlen is also untouchable. Things I have read say that he is VERY much in the future plans for the Bravos. He ain’t goin’ nowhere. Now Morton? That’s another question…

V, got to give something to get something…
mlbtraderumors has been talking about teams options in 2010….Also mentions Tim Hudson’s willingness to come back as a reliever late this year!

It’s safe to assume that if the Braves exercise Hudson’s option, he won’t choose to void it in search of a bigger contract. The Braves’ 2010 rotation would be deep, with Derek Lowe, Jair Jurrjens, Javier Vazquez, Kenshin Kawakami, Hudson, and Tommy Hanson.
    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/05/2010-options-atlanta-braves.html

Ok, Derek will be here next year, right? So will Jurrjens, Kawakami(Has to be with that contract)Vazquez(I mentioned before we might want to trade him) and Hanson should really be up now anyway, so he will be in the rotation for sure next year. So IF they picked up the Hudson option(Honestly, does it make sense at this point???)thats 6 starters. So, unless someone blows out an elbow, where would Kris Medlen fit, anyway???

Medlen will be a great AAA pitcher next year, and a nice rookie in 2011. Honestly, you can not project pitcher health that far ahead. Next year’s rotation should be Huddy, Lowe, JJJ, KK, Hanson. Vazquez is a logical trade candidate. Heck, he could be traded this year at the deadline to bring home much needed offense.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Vazquez dangled along with… ready?… Jeffrey at the deadline. I bet Frank seeks a big bat for RF signed through ’10 – just long enough for JHey to arrive.

Here is a bit of Jon Heyman’s latest column about the Teixeira trade(the comments he makes about Clemens before this is also very interesting)

Texas rebuilt, thanks to Teixeira (and Daniels)

Two summers ago Rangers GM Jon Daniels knew he had to trade Mark Teixeira. Teixeira had rejected their $140 million, eight-year offer, and it was becoming fairly clear he didn’t want to remain with the Rangers long term. Daniels wanted to replenish their system, and this was the way to do it.

    So far, so good.

The haul Daniels received from the Braves looked impressive then, and it looks even better today, with the Rangers the surprise American League West leaders at 18-14. The four main players Daniels received for Teixeira all look like they’ll be fit somewhere between strong contributor and star. Left-hander Matt Harrison just threw a shutout, 20-year-old Elvis Andrus has replaced longtime star Michael Young as the starting shortstop without a blip, catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is no longer looking like a DH, and big-time pitching prospect Neftali Feliz is hitting 100 mph on the farm.

“It’s really early, but we’re happy with it,” Daniels said.

Just like he was as a free agent last winter, Teixeira was a hot commodity in the summer of 2007. (He wasn’t nearly as coveted as a trade target last summer, as he was in his walk year, and the best the Braves could do was Casey Kotchman.) But inquiring teams knew they would be getting Teixeira for only a year-and-a-half max. Daniels maximized the take. While he was focused on the Braves, he had serious talks with the Red Sox, Angels, Yankees, Dodgers and Diamondbacks, as well. The Angels didn’t want to give up Joe Saunders (smart move), the Yankees didn’t want to part with Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes (and had the cash to sign Teixeira later, anyway, for $180 million) and the Dodgers wouldn’t budge on their best prospects.

The Red Sox and D-backs (who offered some of the same prospects that went later for Dan Haren) made the next-best bids. But in terms of quality and quantity, nobody could match the Braves’ offer. Rangers bosses didn’t press Daniels to get immediate help, so with that in mind, the Braves’ package was far and away the best one.

Andrus is a prototypical shortstop who’s a terrific baserunner and gives the power-hitting Rangers a different look. “I couldn’t be happier with the early returns,” Daniels said about Andrus.

The early returns on Saltalamacchia’s defense last year were not good. His blocking and legwork were amateurish, and that’s being kind. But he’s become very usable behind the plate, and is no longer just an offensive player (he’s hitting .261 with three homers and 14 RBIs). “The improvement in his defense is among the most encouraging things I’ve seen this year,” Daniels said.

Harrison (3-2, 4.79) is the big durable left-hander they sought. He has thrown 15 scoreless innings over his last two starts, including a 6-0 shutout of the White Sox in his most recent effort. And Feliz could join left-handed phenom Derek Holland in the ‘pen within weeks. Feliz may have the biggest upside of all the players acquired in this ridiculous haul.

Daniels has taken hits for a couple previous trades (John Danks, Chris Young), but this one alone may more than make up for those deals.

One team’s trash is another team’s treasure… not to mention the $14 million dollar windfall the Rangers received when A-Rod opted out of his contract to resign for more money with the Yankees. Texas has put together a pretty nice team but they still have that gosh awful Texas heat to face this summer.

Hey, the Braves knew what they were getting when they made that trade for Texieria. They just did not have the pitching out of the bullpen to hold a lead.

Still, they have assembled a pretty good collection of hurlers both in the bigs and along the minor league ranks. Pitching is still the hottest commodity.

Looks like Richmond is going to get a AA team beginning next year. Still have no idea of the affiliations and such but looks like I will have something to do.

I won’t be seeing any Braves prospects as Richmond will be in the Eastern League. Still nothing definite on a new stadium but it will come to pass, I am pretty sure of it.

Hey Gil, that’s great news! Any chance it will be the Nationals team, or are they not in the Eastern league???

As for the “new” carb, I just got a kit for it, and the adapter so the Ford linkage will hopefully work fine.
Had to go to Summit(really helps they have a store in town!) to get the stuff, but at least I don’t have to wait til next week.

    G’morning everybody!!!

I have a ton to do, and can’t concentrate on anything other than the Battle For Christ finals this Saturday. One more trip to Tennessee (Loudon) and we are done. That is, of course, unless we win the thing, in which case we get a slot in the Ichthus Festival in Wilmore, KY in June. But 3 trips to TN in 4 weeks is wearing me out. I am not complaining, though because we are so blessed to get this far.

I know y’all came here to read about the Braves, but I’m tellin’ ya, this is all I can think about right now…

Anybody live near Loudon, TN? 😀 What about TennPaul?

Congratulations again Raisins, just one bit of advice while so distracted… Do not operate any heavy machinery or chain saws… 🙂

And remember also.. The Lord’s will be done… Regardless, you are in a great band and you all are giving great testimony..

Now baseball… Ber, I have no idea if the Nationals are interested or even if they don’t already have an agreement somewhere else. I am not going to worry too much about it right now. The franchise they are acquiring currently has a deal with the Giants but minor league ball is always in such a flux…

And on the carb… Well, that’s what they put flame arrests on them for. I gave my youngest son a Holly 650cfm double pumper I had removed from the rebuild job on my ’69 350 and he left it out in the rain. It’s the last thing I gave to him, he did not appreciate it enough to even keep it dry. I think it ended up in the trash…. Kids…baaahh…

OK… time to stir the pot. I have been doing a bit of reading on the ol’ inter-web thingie, and have already found several sites speculating on July deadline deals. The Braves are mentioned prominently throughout because of an obvious need to add a bat.

    Names, you say?

Well, for some reason, there are several sites linking Matt Holliday to the Bravos. I personaly do not see that happening. First, he’d cost a king’s ransom in return for 1/2 season. The Braves went there with Tex, but won’t with Holliday. First, I believe they really thought they’d be able to resign Tex. Not so with Holliday. Plus, why give up all that dough for a guy when JHey is just a couple seasons, if that, away?

Look, I believe we’ll have JHey, Schaf, and Gorkys as our outfielders in a couple of seasons. No reason to block any of them, or screw the salary structure in the process.

Now, for the short term. Many, many sites link Soriano and the Yanks. They need him in a bad way. We also need a right fielder… YES I said a right fielder. Don’t know of a match with the Yanks.

Now, Anaheim is different. They need pitchers, and have a glut of outfielders. But who?

Don’t be surprised to see the Braves and Brian Giles linked again. It happens every year, and makes alot of sense this year. SD needs… everything. Mainly they need salary relief. Maybe Giles plus low-level prospect for Francoeur?

Yep, I said Francoeur. I’ll bet he’s dealt this July for a 2 year bat in RF. Betcha money.

The Braves have seen all they need to see of the high-school standout. He is what he is. He’s serviceable, but not the guy they need to solidify the lineup. Everything else in the lineup falls into place if you can add a real RF bat. A threat. A legitimate cleanup hitter. Franc is nothing more than Matt Diaz with better defense at the moment. Truth hurts, but truth it is.

The fact is, he is still young, relatively cheap (big plus this year), and has some value left. There will never be a better time to get something back. Gotta do it now, though.

OK… there it is. My prescription and early prediction.

From the Northwest Florida Daily News –
comes this story of a Crestview couple who drove their car to Wal-Mart, only to have their car break down in the parking lot. The man told his wife to carry on with the shopping while he fixed the car in the lot.

The wife returned later to see a small group of people near the car. On closer inspection, she saw a pair of male legs protruding from under the chassis. Although the man was in shorts, his lack of underpants turned private parts into glaringly public ones.

Unable to stand the embarrassment, she dutifully stepped forward, quickly put her hand UP his shorts, and tucked everything back into place.

She took a deep breath and stood up boldly to face the crowd. She looked across the hood and found herself staring at her husband, who had been standing idly by.

The mechanic, however, had to have three stitches in his forehead.

    😆 Good intentions! 😆

    This is interesting:
Braves move struggling Reyes to bullpen, call up righty Medlen
    May 15, 2009
    CBSSports.com wire reports

ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves are moving left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes to the bullpen and calling up right-hander Kris Medlen to take his place in the rotation.

Manager Bobby Cox said Friday that Medlen, who is 5-0 with a 0.96 ERA at Triple-A Gwinnett, will be called up to start Tuesday against Colorado.

Medlen is receiving the promotion instead of top prospect Tommy Hanson, who is 1-3 with a 1.99 ERA at Gwinnett.

Medlen has allowed only 19 hits while striking out 44 batters in 37 1/3 innings.

Reyes is 0-2 with a 6.58 ERA in five starts.

I am not to worried about adding someone until after the All-star break. I would love to get someone like Sizemore but that is unlikely to happen. More likely someone will be wanting to dump payroll… I don’t know how many chips Wren and Company will have to play with when the time comes to make a deal.

The Braves are expected to select a local high-school standout pitcher in next month’s draft. The kid’s name is Zack Wheeler. He’s already 6’4″ as a HS senior, and throws consistently in the low 90’s. His assessment from mlb.com:

Fastball: Wheeler has great arm strength and can get the fastball up to 95 mph. He sits at around 90-93 mph.

Fastball movement: It has plenty of life, with a close to low three-quarter arm slot that creates a good angle, especially against right-handed hitters. He throws it down in the zone with sink.

Curve: He flashes a plus curve, but it’s not consistent in the strike zone. He throws it 78-80 mph.

Changeup: He doesn’t really throw it, but he has shown some feel for it and could develop into an average pitch.

Control: His command is in and out. His fastball command was better than with his curve. Inconsistency with delivery causes the disruption in command.

Poise: He threw well in a good, competitive atmosphere. When his command leaves him, he manages to collect himself and get out of trouble.

Physical Description: Wheeler is tall with long arms and broad shoulders — the kind of body you want from a high school pitcher, with projectability and wiry strength.

    Medical Update: Healthy.

Strengths: He has big-time arm strength and flashes a plus curve. He’s a baseball rat with excellent makeup.

Weaknesses: His command is inconsistent, especially with the breaking ball. His delivery is inconsistent. He doesn’t really show a third pitch as of yet.

Summary: If you like projectable high school pitchers with a lot of arm strength — and a lot of teams do — then Wheeler might be the guy for you. The Georgia prepster has plenty of fastball and does show a plus breaking ball at times. Because of some delivery issues, his command can be spotty, but he’s an excellent athlete with terrific poise and makeup. He might be a little bit of a project, but the upside is considerable.

Is it just me, or is anybody else scratching their head over the callup of Kris Medlen? I know he’s throwing great in Gwinnett, but he is about the 3rd option I would have expected.

#1 I would have expected Charlie Morton to get the call. First, he has some limited ML experience, second, he’s throwing well in AAA, and third (and most importantly) he’s already on the 40 man roster.

#2 I would have gone ahead with the Hanson callup. Look… he’s gonna be here this year at some point anyway, so the whole “cotrolling years” contract argument is gonna be gone anyway. He is a stud ready to become a ML’er. Plus, controlling years won’t matter anyway, because he is one guy that’ll get a multi-year ML contract before his arb years are done. The only hesitance with TommyH is that once he’s up, he’s up. And if TommyG can successfully come back and take the 5th rotation spot, then TommyH would either go to the ‘pen (not happening) or have to go back to AAA. Can’t see that wither.

So, what to make of this? You bring up a guy who is arguably at his very peak in AAA, who you must put on the 40-man, for 2 starts at most if Glav is OK?

Showcase. Gotta be. It is the most logical reason for the callup. And especially now that the rainout forced Lowe back a day. Medlen’s start could be skipped completely because everyone else would be on regular rest, and no roster move would have to be made at all – 40-man or active. However, Medlen will still start on Wednesday. I smell a showcase.

    I’m just sayin’…

V, you bring up an interesting point…why didn’t they bring up Hanson first??? Are they thinking they can’t send him down if Glavine can still pitch??? Why not Morton then??? Why add Medlen to the 40 man??? Hadn’t thought of that before…What if he pitches really well???

Just thought of this…how much budget room to we have???(Just haven’t been checking out DOB much the last month or so, that new multi page format makes it impossible to find his posts, besides the main lead)

If we don’t have much if any room to take on salary, IF Medlen looks good, then trade Javy to make room for a bat???

Shoot, that still doesn’t make sense to bring him up ahead of Hanson though, does it??? Really shouldn’t give up very young, cheap starters for a bat though…

Well, this ought to be the final nail in the US auto…

Obama to Set New Vehicle Rules, First Carbon Limit
By Kim Chipman and John Hughes

May 18 (Bloomberg) — President Barack Obama will announce tomorrow new rules for vehicle emissions and mileage, setting the first-ever nationwide standard for greenhouse-gas pollution, according to people familiar with the plan.

The limit will be coordinated with new national fuel economy standards for cars and trucks, said the people, who asked not to be identified before the announcement.

The action, which follows California’s push for approval of its own proposed standards, is the “biggest single step to curb global warming,” Dan Becker, director of the environmental group Safe Climate Campaign, said in an interview.

The White House’s top energy, environment and transportation officials have been meeting with automaker executives and other groups as the administration worked to craft a single national policy for vehicle emissions. It seeks to avoid the confusion of different state rules across the country.

The Washington-based Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, whose members include General Motors Corp., Chrysler LLC, Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp., has called for a single standard.

It’s “yet another indication of the growing consensus within the business community that Congress needs to take strong action on energy reform, and it needs to do it now,” Dan Weiss, a director of climate policy at the Washington-based Center for American Progress, a Democratic-leaning policy group, said in a statement.

    2012 Vehicles

The proposed federal rule would start with 2012 vehicle models and by 2016 models would equate to a fuel-economy standard of slightly less than 35.5 miles per gallon, said one of the persons knowledgeable about the plan.

The Transportation Department announced in March that cars and light trucks will be required to meet a U.S. fuel-economy average of 27.3 miles per gallon for 2011 models, a 2 mpg increase from the previous year’s level.

Gil, I’m with you: getting there (and back) is most of the fun.

Before Mother had to move in with us, Kelly and I used to pack a couple of sandwiches and a few cans of Diet Coke, and just head out. Sometimes with a specific destination, sometimes not. We’d spy an old cemetery and check it out, record names and data, etc. All sorts of interesting stuff! We miss that.

Lost the hard drive, lost the alert, and am devastated that the Littlest Hillbilly Brave from Arkansas celebrated his first year on earth on May 13 without happy wishes from any of us.

Today, May 19, 2007, I am ready to pull the plug on both. Both should be benched… and not just for a game or two. They are empty at bats right now. If nothing else, drop KJ to 8th in the order, right behind GAnderson, who shouldn’t bat any higher than 7th. Heck, I’d take Prado in RF over the other options right now. I am just tired of futility personified in the form of number 7. I’ll take the rocket scientist from AAA over Jeff right now. He just makes me tired…

Former Brave Smoltz ties the knot

    By CARROLL ROGERS

    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

    Tuesday, May 19, 2009

Saturday was a big day for former Braves pitcher John Smoltz, who was married to Kathryn Darden

Smoltz has four kids by his previous marriage and she has two. The wedding was Saturday at 7 p.m. at Smoltz’s house in Alpharetta in front of about 70 friends and family.

The couple is in Fort Myers, Fla., where Smoltz is rehabbing from shoulder surgery for the Boston Red Sox.

Smoltz’s former teammate and good friend Jeff Francoeur said Smoltz would have another celebration after the season that players could attend.

    Hey, everybody!

Welcome back, Gil! Hope you enjoyed your mini-vacation!

Hillbilly, what do you do with all your free time??? 😀 (Got pics??)

I received this in the mail from a dear friend out in Oregon. Since I’ve been on ‘Eagle-watch’ these last few months, I found it enormously interesting and wanted to share it with you. Knowing the writer personally, I can vouch for the veracity:

    Eagles 3, crows 0

What a tale! And one hell of a wingman……..or “wing lady”. Makes you wonder if the guys {German pilots I think] who first devised fighter tactics employing lead and a wing man had observed something similar to this with birds.

I got this from a friend who runs a 2000 acre corn farm up around Barron WI , not far from Oshkosh . He used to fly F4Es and F-16s for the Guard and participated in the first Gulf War… Submitted for your enjoyment, and as a reminder that there are other great, magnificent flyers around.

“I went out to plant corn for a bit to finish a field before tomorrow morning and witnessed The Great Air Battle .

A golden eagle – big, about six foot wingspan – flew right in front of the tractor. It was being chased by three crows that were continually dive bombing it and pecking at it. The crows do this because the eagles rob their nests when they find them.

At any rate, the eagle banked hard right in one evasive maneuver, then landed in the field about 100 feet from the tractor. This eagle stood about 3 feet tall. The crows all landed too and took up positions around the eagle at 120° apart, but kept their distance at about 20 feet from the big bird. The eagle would take a couple steps towards one of the crows and they’d hop backwards and forward to keep their distance.

    Then the reinforcements showed up.

I happened to spot the eagle’s mate hurtling down out of the sky at what appeared to be approximately Mach 1.5. Just before impact the eagle on the ground took flight, and the three crows which were watching the grounded eagle, also took flight thinking they were going to get in some more pecking on the big bird. The first crow being targeted by the diving eagle never stood a snowball’s chance in hell. There was a mid-air explosion of black feathers and that crow was done. The diving eagle then banked hard left in what had to be a 9G climbing turn, using the energy it had accumulated in the dive, and hit crow #2 less than two seconds later. Another crow dead.

The grounded eagle, which was now airborne and had an altitude advantage on the remaining crow, which was streaking eastward in full burner, made a short dive then banked hard right when the escaping crow tried to evade the hit. It didn’t work – crow #3 bit the dust at about 20 feet altitude.

This aerial battle was better than any airshow I’ve been to, including the warbirds show at Oshkosh ! The two eagles ripped the crows apart and ate them on the ground, and as I got closer and closer working my way across the field, I passed within 20 feet of one of them as it ate its catch. It stopped and looked at me as I went by and you could see in the look of that bird that it knew who’s Boss Of The Sky. What a beautiful bird!”

Well, back again. It was a busy day… Cleaning the boat after a few days in salt water is always a pain but always necessary, that is if you don’t plan to just use it and throw it away. The fish have not really made their way into the Mobjack. I think we were about a week early. That and the weather front I think held them up.

I was a bit apprehensive on Monday when I first put my boat in the water, the bay was a tad bit on the rough side to say the least. It has been a good boat, always dry but this week was my first experience with the spray washing over the bow. T’was windy and rough… Needless to say, I was glad to get the thing docked at the cottage pier. If it had been warmer, the place would have been perfect for swimming, very sandy bottom that extended out about 100 yards, unfortunately, when the tide was out, my boat rested on the bottom. It was that shallow. It was a nice little get-a-way but just not what we had in mind. We like to fish and being at the mercy of the tide just didn’t do it for us.

We went to one of my old hang outs while we were in Matthews too, a place called Haven Beach, I use to go there 40 years ago with what ever girl I was seeing at the time. Was a great place to swim and have fun without any crowd at all. It had not change a bit…. well, except there is now a porta potty and trash cans…. and you cannot actually drive on the beach any longer. Back in the 50s there was a hotel located there. It was destroyed by Hurricane Hazel in ’54. No one ever rebuilt there, I guess there were too many other places closer to the beaten path from which to choose.

Anyway, got everything put away and cleaned up the boat and the SUV then watched the shows I had recorded.

Now baseball… Only 1.5 games out… I see a glimmer of hope for this team. Omar will not be easily replaced but Diory is getting a chance, yes Jennifer, I can see you rolling your eyes now…. Maybe Glen Hubbard can offer him some coaching, and they can keep Terry away from him… he already knows how to hit…

My take on AI? I didn’t really care one way or the other. UNTIL the judges were fawning and slobbering over Adam so much. THEN I didn’t care WHO the final two were: I would root for the other guy.

I didn’t like Adam’s “I’m perfect and you peons should fall at my feet merely for gracing you with my presence” attitude. And he wears HEAVY makeup. Always. A video clip from a bar in which he was singing undeniably verifies his orientation is other than heterosexual. He was born with blond hair; he dyed it and his eyebrows black for whatever reason.

I saw his performances as too studied, too deliberate, too theatrical, nothing really genuine. Smoke and mirrors.

I just didn’t like anything about him. In case that wasn’t clear.

Kris. He has his moments. He certainly isn’t the flashy Liberace-type that Adam is, but he can sing and plays several instruments.

He deliberately kept his Christian faith and church activities out of sight; he wanted to sink-or-swim on his talent alone in the competition. He is a real, ordinary person trying to take a really big leap to fulfill a dream. I’m glad he has his chance.

I think when Danny was voted off, his fan-base swung their votes to Kris.

I just did NOT want whatziname to win.

Never noticed an attitude from Adam, he always seemed well-mannered to me. For me it should be the best singer wins. I don’t care about looks, orientation, religion, political opinions, etc. Different strokes, I guess.

I’m betting that KJ is traded by the deadline. The Braves are stacked with middle infielders – Prado, Diory, Brooks Conrad, etc. – but have zero outfield depth. If KJ can just relax and do his thing lower in the lineup, he’ll bring a decent return.

Not sure what’s available, but I am sure somebody will be looking to unload before too much longer. It just about time for teams to start talkin’…

From the “I can admit I was wrong” department: Wouldn’t Andruw’s reawakened right handed bat and minuscule contract be welcome in this lineup?

Raisins, normally I would agree it would be great to have Andruw back but he would then have Terry Pendleton as a hitting coach again….

Reading reports on Medlen… sounds like the same thing that happened to Mark Wholers… no pain but loss of control and sudden drop in velocity…

I am American Idol’s biggest non-fan…can’t stand the show, but Mrs. and young Miss HB are enamoured so whaddyagonnado? (Thank the lord for Extra Innings.) Then again, my musical tastes have always gone against the grain of the mainstream, so it’s no suprise that it brings me so much pain to see the children all turn to karaoke, hanging all their wishes up on disregarded stars.

But regardless of my disdain, my geopgraphical status draws me into the discussion like the tractor beam on the Death Star draws in the Millenium Falcon. This state is in pandemonium over Kris Allen. We don’t have much to offer, here, but we have the winner of the hottest television show in the world. I haven’t seen Arkansas so electirfied since the Hogs won the NCAA Championship in ’94. Unbelievable, the power of this franchise.

Well, got two things off my list today, even did a couple of bonus chores that had not yet made it to the “to do” list… Can now put them on the “done that” list….

What To Do With The Braves Outfield?
    By Steve Adams
In his blog over at MLB.com, Mark Bowman lays out the offensive woes of the Atlanta outfield, and in the comments section, Bowman even ponders the potential release of Jeff Francoeur:
“When I look at myself in the mirror, I’d have to say that my fault is that I’ve given Francoeur a break for far too long. There’s no doubt that the leniency stems from the fact that he’s a great guy. But at the end of the day we all have a job to do. My job is to relay information to the public and thus, I’ve written two entries this week preparing you for the possibility that Frenchy’s days in Atlanta might be numbered. It will be very difficult for the Braves to trade him. As for a return to the Minors, I don’t know if that would help anybody. Thus, you can’t ignore the possibility that if things don’t improve soon there’s a definite possibility that they could release him.”

Here’s some of the unfortunate “highlights” of the Braves’ struggles, if you can call them that:

    * In 12 games since being activated from the DL, Garret Anderson is hitting .283/.321/.326 with just one extra base hit – a double. All this comes along with limited range in the outfield.
    * In 66 May at-bats, Francoeur is hitting .197/.214/.273.
    * For his career, Francoeur has averaged 630 ABs per season. Over his last 631 ABs, dating back to May 6, 2009, Francoeur is hitting .235/.287/.341 with 11 HR. Over that time, among players with 500 ABs, only Michael Bourn, Chone Figgins, Bobby Crosby, Willy Taveras, and Jason Kendall have lower slugging percentages, and only Chris Young of Arizona has a lower OBP. Ouch.
    * Rookie Jordan Schafer’s .660 OPS is the highest of any of the three Braves outfielders mentioned thus far.

FBG, we could throw any number of AAA outfielders into RF and suffer little if any dropoff in offensive performance. The bottom line is, he ain’t producing. With the exception of a tremendous rookie half-season, he hasn’t produced. How foolish does he look now for turning down the same basic deal Mac signed 2 years ago? Instead of contract security, he may find himself released. Due to the ridiculous arbitration system, he’ll be due another raise in 2010 which he certainly isn’t earning. Simple economics says you have to do something.

If you hired another pastry chef that made a really good cake 2 years ago, and today that chef couldn’t even make a “slice and bake” cookie, would you be apt to keep relying on her? Especially if the pastry chef union says you have to give her a big raise after this catering season? Probably not…

Brad Komminsk was labeled a “can’t miss major leaguer” by Hall of Famer Hank Aaron when he tore through the Atlanta Braves’ minor league system. In 1983, the Braves reportedly turned down a trade offer that would have sent Komminsk to the Boston Red Sox for Jim Rice.

Jeff’s swing is a mess. The only consistency is that he is consistently bad. I cringe every time he steps to the plate.

The irony is, he could potentially be exactly what the Braves lack – a right handed power threat. Let’s face it, he has the ability to hit 25+ HR’s and drive in 120+ runs… we’ve seen it. But the media and blognations – us included – got into his head regarding his aggressiveness causing him to change his approach at the plate. He has never been the same. I wish it was a physical problem. That you could deal with. I fear this is entirely mental. He may never recover in Atlanta.

It’s the tease of what was and what could be that keeps him planted in Atlanta’s right field. Unfortunately, it’s the pain of what is that keeps him securely in the cross-hairs of you and me.

Whew… another productive out(ing) for me today. Mowed the front lawn. Felled three dead trees, tilled up a garden spot for Josie. Officially opened the pool… The last thing was out of necessity I think as I was pretty hot after all that work. Still a bit on the chilly side but hey, officially the opening week of summer with Sunday being Memorial Day.

Funny, I don’t know why I bother to go on vacation when all I really need is already here at home…

My goal when I moved into this place was to make it look like a park… Well folks, I’m getting there… The spinal stenosis and arthritis slowed my progress a bit but I’m slowly reaching my goal.

And Bluebirds… sadly, the rat snake which is in residence made its way into their nest last night. Momma bird has been grieving all day. 😦 Tis a rather large snake but it was the smaller of the two we had around here. The other died last fall when she took on a bat and literally bite off more than she could chew. I found them locked in their death troughs and removed them from the site. I really should have taken a picture…

Now baseball… Wow, still thinking about the great game last night. Remember when that was the norm instead of the exception? So many times lately it has been the Braves on the short end of such contest. I have not checked the weather for Atlanta but hopefully the storms will stay away so the game can be played. Lowe pitching is not a guaranteed win but the Bravos have a good chance to chalk up another W with him on the mound.

Here is the before photo with the brass bracket I was told was what I needed for a Lincoln…Didn’t work too well, and since the holes were not big enough(Kinda of oval instead of round) had to drill them out to make the bolts fit. So, can’t return it…

Next is the photo my friend the Delta mechanic was able to do…made a extention for the kickdown, and relocated the throttle cable on the other side of the cruise control.

What’s funny is at first everything looked pretty good, but the secondaries weren’t opening so he had to shorten the rod, redo how he had the throttle cable set up…in short, burned up his whole afternoon. He’s going to HATE Lincolns!

Holley is clearly the way to go on Lincolns, they are roughly the same width as the original carb, this one is just way too wide to make(easily) work.

If I was a rich man,(And had a healthy back)I would have loved to put on some D0VE heads and put a better intake, increase compression a bit…It feels a lot faster as it is…can’t wait to see if my Mileage will improve much…seems to be better right now, even with me putting the pedal to the metal several times…you know, to make sure everything is functioning properly. 😈 My friend didn’t know a 5000 lb car could move like that.

Now IF I ever can find a sucker fellow car enthusiast who would buy it from me, I would likely get another Buick from the late 60’s and I would need a lead additive or booster. Or aviation gas.

They are the size of fully-grown chickens now – big! One has been outfitted with a satellite transmitter so she can be tracked for (they hope) the next three years. Just fascinating! 😀

OK – gotta start supper. Y’all have fun!

There’s CL and Salty too! Good to see ya, fair Lady of Carolina and Tiger Paw. Didn’t realize you folks had been so elusive lately, since I’ve been on that grindstone Raisins talks about. I’ve missed a bunch of games too with travel and work and such but this series has been the best I’ve seen in quite a while. Great Braves baseball being played against arguably the best team in baseball.

Good to see Bear, Gil and FBG holding the fort. Raisins, after catching up on the Stuffville news, let me send you a belated but hearty congrats on doing so well in the Christian band competition. Probably not much that separates the talent of your band and those others in the finals, just the way it goes on any particular day. The experience will surely a stepping stone to bigger venues and a broader mission.

Note to Raisins… You may now advertise your band as a finalist in the competition… Never hurts to add a little spin on things. Like a good friend and local politician once told me,

“If you don’t blow your own horn once in a while, other folks will use it for a funnel.”

And baseball… Wow, great game today by the Braves, not as exciting as the 1-0 game but plenty of offense for the good guys. Kelly Johnson is heating up and BMac has folks asking where they can get a pair of his “Supervision” goggles…

CL… glad you stopped by, I was getting worried….

Hey everybody! Great to see SG and Salty stopping by. CL, don’t be worried about Chris. He’s hanging out on Facebook alot these days. He seems to be doing fine.

I missed today’s game. Sundays are very busy. I’m about to find a recap, though.

And Gil, funny you mentioned the “finalist” thing… I tried to run the same spin, but my buddy and bandmate Gary will have no part of it. He is a very talented musician and songwriter, and the most unassuming and humble man you’ll ever meet. A winning combination if you ask me…

Waiting to see if the Coca Cola 600 is going to be run tonight. Pretty wet in Charlotte.

Ber, I don’t know why I thought your Mark was pre ’73… Yep, lower compression but regular gas was still 94 octane back then.

Another project started at the homestead today. I am putting up a three rail fence behind the wife’s flower garden. I had about 75 feet of fencing that I salvaged and have had stored away for about a year. I figured I would work on it a little at a time. Digging post holes is tough on an old man like me. However, I can do four or five and not keel over….

Braves play at 4 o’clock tomorrow in San Francisco. Another series win would be nice. If the pitching holds up, we have a shot…

Wow Jenn, I bet it was fun today at Turner Field… Nothing like a 10-2 blow out with 3 homeruns being hit liven the mood….

yeah Ber, this is about a close to a chat room as I will get… Had my “experiences” with on line chats when it was the rage back in the 90s… Wow, hard to realize how long I have been using a computer… You would think I would be more adept to it by now.

All that other stuff is just the same old same old with a newer and more expensive twist… Still can get you into a lot of trouble if you are not careful… and sometimes even when you are….

And speaking of expensive… I am really suppressing my desire to go out and buy a new pick up truck… Josie has said no more cars… 😦 I am still going to take a look at the new Camaro, it looks great in photographs but still I would like to view one up close and personal. I am thinking about selling the Trans Am convertible. I love the car but it has a six speed manual transmission and my knees don’t really like having to shift gears any more. Sigh… I always wanted a Corvette too but that is not going to happen…

Anyway, I will come to my senses soon enough and just watch as inflation eats up my savings and I will be in the same predicament as last fall when my net worth took a decided turn for the poorer… That and I remember how much I hate paying personal property taxes on a new vehicle.

    Hey, y’all!

When I get ‘dug in’ on a project I tend to lose focus on anything else. Days fly by in a blur and I don’t realize how much time has gone by when I do come up and look around. I hate it when I give my word on something and then things happen that keep me from keeping my word.

Jenn, write me an email about what you saw, noticed, experienced, smelled, liked, didn’t like, etc at the game! Then, voila! our next lead that everyone would thoroughly enjoy! And I won’t have to hijack one of Raisin’s comments! 😆 OK????!!!!

RE: all those other things – Facebook, etc – I’m happy with our little place. The grass is not always greener…. Besides, I just plain don’t have time for all that! I feel that I’m neglecting B&S sometimes, but it just can’t be helped.

OK – the next chapter awaits! I have about 5 hours until I have to stop to cook. Lemme see how much I can get done. I’m on the 10th generation which are the 7th great grandparents – and there are 27 sets of grandparents with all their documentation, images, offspring, etc.

I sure understand how managers and fans can get so frustrated with Javy…his stuff looked great today and I was thinking it might be a mistake to trade him…a boneheaded throw to 2nd and a grooved fastball made it 3-0.
I heard Sutton say before Travis Ishikawa’s 3rd hit today(he was hitting .226 before today) that he clearly loves the off speed pitch, then gives up another hit on an off speed pitch to him! That’s why Sutton was 324 and 256 and Javy is 131 and 132 ….

From Rosenthal…Frenchy would be about the 6th outfielder unless they traded Rocco to us…and he sure wouldn’t play much there….

If the Braves explore trading right fielder Jeff Francoeur, the Royals likely would be the team with the most interest. Royals GM Dayton Moore was the Braves’ farm director when Francoeur rose through the minors. However, others in the organization are not high on Francoeur, one source said.

More BP may help Jeff Francoeur’s trade value. (Jeff Francoeur / Getty Images)

The Red Sox have taken two looks at Francoeur, according to another source. Francoeur’s poor plate discipline would make him a questionable fit in Boston, but perhaps the Sox see an opportunity to buy low, if they are indeed interested.

The Braves will need to find a power hitter in left even if they keep Francoeur, so trading him would effectively create two holes. Better they give Francoeur every opportunity to straighten o

Nope, still having a bit of trouble with that, Ber. I think my sleep cycle got all askew after the shoulder surgery, and I’ve just not been able to get back to normal. I get cross-eyed sleepy during the early afternoon, but I refuse to take a nap ‘ cause that would just exasperate the problem. You’d think that I’d sleep well when I finally do get to bed but that’s not happening either. Sleep for a couple of hours, then watch the clock until about dawn when I get sleepy again. Sleep for a couple of hours then I make myself stay up all day.

I don’t know what else to do but tough it out. Maybe one day! 🙂

Francoeur has to fish or cut bait. The Braves can’t afford to keep babying these players; they have to have people who will produce what they are being paid for. He, and any others like him, are costing the entire team dearly and in many ways. Just my opinion. He’s a good guy, I personally like him, but he’s just not doing his job. Too bad Jarmillo isn’t available! (I’d like to be GM for about :15 – just long enough to fire TP and re-arrange the coaching staff!) 😆

I suspect your lack of being able to sleep is for much the same reason as mine. I have begun taking a anti-depressant at bed time again and it is allowing me to get 8 full hours of sleep again. Helps to repress the fibromyalgia.. Of course it takes me a couple of days to get use to it as initially I have zero energy.

It took a couple of tries to find the right one for me as some had me wired and others made me edgy and some left me with a splitting headache… Better things for better living through chemistry… 🙂

Good morning Stuffville… Well, Medlen pitched pretty good after the 2nd inning. Perhaps he has turned the corner as far as pitching in the big leagues.

An observation about this team… Just not enough offense to cover up the mistakes made by the pitching staff. For this team, it always seems to come down to one inning when the wheels fall off but the Braves often times are unable to get the big hit.

As has been the pattern for the last four years, it has been the center fielder and the right fielder who have led the way in those failures. At least Frency is making contact with the ball but that is a small victory. It’s still pretty early to be writing this team off but the Braves do need some offensive help.

Another thought… The Braves certainly are being more patient with Francouer than they were with Ryan Langerhans…

The Braves have a singles hitter in LF, and a singles hitter in RF. At least they are getting occasional hits. They have an automatic out in CF.

Shafer is completely overmatched right now. The question is do you do more damage to his psyche by demoting him after 45 ML games, or by continuing to send him to the lions? I think he needs to go to AAA and get his stroke back.

It is still early in the trade market; teams at this point will get a premium return for helping a team fill a need. One exception may be St. Louis, who will have to do something when Ludwick comes off the DL. They have 4 OF starters for 3 spots. Don’t look for Ludwick to be moved, though. Ankiel is likely the odd man out there given this is his walk year. Walk year or not, 100 games of Ankiel may not be a bad thing.

Is that the answer? No. It’ll take more than that. If the door to the GM’s office had “Raisins” written on it, I’d work to make that deal now. I think a mid-level pitching prospect and a throw in would get it done. Then I’d sign FA Jim Edmonds for the bench. I’d do that today. Next, I’d work to make another deal at the trade deadline. There will be a bat or two available then, and I fully expect the homewren upstairs to be an active participant.

The bottom line is that one bat isn’t enough. It may be enough to earn the wild card, but not enough to really make any noise. One new bat will only propel the Braves outfield from “man, they really suck” to “they’re OK, but…”.

As Gil said above, the offense as currently constituted simply cannot overcome a less than stellar pitching performance. True dat..

As is, the Braves are a .500 team. One additional bat yields an 86 win season at best. Two new bats equals 92+ wins and October baseball for the first time in 4 years.
