92: A Little Seasoned Wood for the Hot Stove

JEFFERSON, GA – Some so-called “fans” sure are funny…

Damon

They’ll call for signing Johnny Damon, yet trash the idea of trading for Luke Scott. (Their numbers are almost identical over the

L Scott

last four years.  Scott is significantly younger and cheaper.)

They’ll wail at the signing of Billy Wagner because he’s coming off surgery, and gnash their collective teeth at not retaining Gonzo and Sori, both of whom came off surgeries last season.

They’ll want to lynch Frank Wren over signing Troy Glaus because of his

T Glaus

one shoulder surgery (from which he returned at the end of last season and was activated for the playoffs), yet clamor for Frank to sign Xavier Nady, who is coming off of 2 TJ surgeries and has yet to prove he can even scratch his own back.

They’ll elevate the up and down Javy Vazquez to Cy Youngian heights for winning 15 games (against 10 forgotten losses) and putting up the best stats of his career in 2009. The same fans will crucify the steady Derek Lowe for having one down year in 2009, and winning just 15 games while losing an unacceptable 10. Horrors! 😯

Many refuse to acknowledge that there was anything other than

A Viscaino

Vazquez and Melky Cabrera involved in the trade with the bankrolled Yankees.  And if they do acknowledge that Arodys Vizcaino was there, they ignore his pedigree. At the same time, they’ll absolutely go ballistic at the notion of including either Julio Teheran or Randall Delgado in a trade. Vizcaino is now rated in front of both of those deservedly treasured prospects in some publications.  And these “fans” somehow completely ignore lefty Michael Dunn, who will most likely be an important part of this year’s bullpen.  Oh, yeah… and there is still about $7 million or so to be spent as a net result. Can’t leave that nugget out.

M Dunn

(I, for one, am envisioning a 2013 rotation that includes Tommy Hanson, Jair Jurrjens, Vizcaino, Teheran and possibly Mike Minor. That will be stout… STOUT.)

You know, we here in Stuffville are a unique bunch. We understand a few things.

First, the roster on January 5 is not the roster on April 5, when the Braves open the 2010 campaign at home against the Cubs.

Second, a GM’s job is not to shoot all of his bullets in pursuit of building for only the current year. He has to have forward vision and build for years down the road while fielding the most competitive team he can for the current season and keeping the franchise viable from a financial standpoint. It is simply the reality of operating in the current economic climate.

Third, and probably most importantly, we all have the good sense to realize that WE are the fans, and THEY are the professionals. That reality is lost on far too many laptop executives. I think fantasy baseball and the proliferation of far too many boutique statistics has warped the view of a lot of nouveau “fans”, who really have no idea how to have loyalty to a team and form a real emotional bond. We are in a “fast food” society that wants drive-thru satisfaction. In my estimation, you can’t truly enjoy the highs if you haven’t endured the lows. Plant the garden. Tend it, feed it, pull a few weeds, let it grow. Harvest the bounty.

But what do I know? I’ve only been a Braves fan since I was 5, when the Braves infield was made up of Clete Boyer, Sonny Jackson, Felix Millan and Orlando Cepeda. I had no idea who they were, but I had their cards and knew they played for my team. I do remember when Earl Williams was ROY in 1971.

And I remember 1973, when the Braves had 3 players with over 40 HR’s – Hank Aaron (40), Darrell Evans (41) and Davey Johnson (43). That same year, Ralph Garr stole 35 bases, and I had a Ralph Garr Road Runner (beep-beep) bicycle license plate proudly hanging from the back of my banana seat. I remember when Hammerin’ Hank broke “the record.” It was a day game. I was in 3rd grade. They announced it in class.

I will never forget any of those things. They are special to me.

Do you know what the common denominator is in all of those seasons from my kidhood? I could not begin to tell you the Win-Loss records of those teams. It didn’t matter; they were the Atlanta Braves. They were MY team. Period.

They still are. Period.

Great work, VOR. People do get a lot of strange preconceived notions about who’s a good player & who isn’t.

Win or lose, Dad & I will be watching. We’ll see them March 25th here to play the Pirates & we’re checking out the schedule (Gwinnett’s too) during our spring trip to Tiger.

Mr. O’B:

One-year, $1.75 million contract… There are additional incentives – possibly up to $2.25 million – that can be reached if the nearly 6-foot-6, 250-pound Californian stays off the disabled list and in the lineup.

A steal, if you ask me. Of course, nobody asked me. 😀

Hi folks… Yes Raisins, outstanding work yet again. I may have to talk with CL about coming up with a suitable award to recognize such outstanding prose.

Hmmmm. 1.75 mill for Glaus, I suspect that Wren might get some real kudos for that signing if Troy has a decent year. Funny, he does not even have to have a great year for that one to pay dividends.

Heyman:

The Cardinals and Matt Holliday have reached an agreement on a seven-year, $120MM deal with a full no-trade clause.

And Albert is sitting back and licking his chops. I see 7yrs/$175MM in his future.

Stupid Cards.

Rasins, the only down side I see with Luke Scott is he is a very streaky hitter. Of course, maybe all ML pjayers are streaky.

I’m sure TP could cure that, he sure solved Kelly Johnson’s streakiness. Yep, once Terry finished with KJ, he couldn’t hit water while falling out of a boat…

Holy Cow! How can the Cards justify that? If Holliday’s worth $17 million/year, what’s Albert worth…he’s twice the player. Looks an AROD contract coming up. Soon to have $40 million/year for two players…and spend a ton on insuring the contracts, too. Unreal. And think what he’d have gotten if the economy was 2007 vintage! Money’s coming from somewhere.

Not really, Gil. Some probably have little baseballs and bats on them. Some might have team emblems on them. I’ve even seen whole sets that include the bedspread and curtains all in matching motifs. That’s not to say that streaky looking ones don’t exist but I’d think that was most likely due to clorox getting into the whole washer load than actual design.

Hmmm… so Rochey turned down a 2 year $17MM offer from the Giants?

That’s pretty nice coin for a guy who has never put a full season together. I guess the 3rd year is pretty important to him after all. Gives a pretty good indication why he was never seriously considered by the Braves. (Although I think Glaus could well prove to be the cleanup guy we want him to be.)

By the way… wander what Bobby will call him..?

Yep, I would think Albert would be salivating at the amount of money he is likely to rake in come contract time. I feel pretty sure that when the Cardinals cry poverty his agent is going to laugh in their face.

If Troy plays up to his potential next season, we might all become a little Glaussy eyed…

MLBTR:

Scott Miller of CBSSports.com is reporting that Atlanta has signed veteran utilityman Eric Hinske to a one-year contract, pending a physical. The 2002 Rookie Of The Year hit .242/.348/.432 in 224 plate appearances with the Pirates and Yankees last season.

MLB.com’s Mark Bowman tweeted earlier today that the Braves were looking to add a pinch-hitter to complete their winter moves from a lineup standpoint, and Hinske’s signing would certainly seem to fit that bill. He provides decent pop from both sides of the plate (.786 career OPS vs. lefties, .778 OPS vs. righties) and can play first, third and both corner outfield positions. Also, as Miller’s story noted, Hinske is “something of a good-luck charm,” having played in the last three World Series. So, in the words of Bill Murray, he’s got that goin’ for him.

Hinske?

Does that mean we are truely done? That’s it? No real LF?

Well, I suppose a platoon of Diaz/Melky might not be too bad, just not what I had hoped. I sure hope that JHey is ready for April. I’d rather let him get goin’ in AAA for a little while, but I s’pose not.

Maybe Jordan can pick up where he left off and let the Melky/Matty show play in RF for a while.

Who knows…

Don’t get me wrong… I think Hinske is a pretty good signing – of a bench player. Heck, he can play both corner IF spots as well as both corner OF spots. He’s practically Mark DeRosa without the hype and dollars. And he’s alot better option off the bench than Greg Norton.

I had just hoped for 1 year stop gap for LF, and for Melky to be the 4th OF.

Oh well… he does have a WS ring, which is more than any of the other OF’s can say.

Still, Melky/N8/MattyD doesn’t exactly rattle my bleachers.

I’ll just imagine that N8/Schafer/JHey will be special, and pray that they’ll emerge quickly.

And no, I cannot imagine turning down 17 MIl. I started to have weird tooth pains last Weds. Was getting dental floss caught between two teeth as if there was a zig zag pattern between them. Then I take a flashlight and see…the outer side of my wisdom tooth(had the lowers pulled many years ago) was…black! 😯 Uh-oh. Hadn’t gone to the dentist since 2004. My Dad’s dentist was closed already for the holiday(s) and so I tried to track down the dentist I saw back in 2004(That office was no longer in Morrow) through a friend who’s daughter is a dental hygienist found where she went. Cool! Then I go down there. Surprisingly, the black colored wisdom tooth is not where I have a problem, it’s two big cavities in teeth close to it. Over $600 for all 3 to be taken care of. After taking our poor kitty to the vet, Christmas, other bills, I simply didn’t have it. Gee, that’s too bad, they don’t even allow you to get work done unless it’s all paid up front(Try getting dental insurance that isn’t a large fortune, as a self employed smoe like me!)
So, teeth hurting, I left. Thank God the pain got much less severe over time(stopped eating anything hard) but started to feel a weird pain on the other side of my mouth! 😯 😯 😯 . It went away a day later.
Saw my Dad’s dentist Monday. He was able to fill the 2 cavities(Never saw or said anything about the hiding black tooth-or the other side of my mouth) and was able to pay a chunk now, then the rest over the next few months.
So yeah, if I was a guy that had hit .246 the last 3 years before the all star break(and that 925 AB’s before, 685 after the late break)I would jump at the chance to make 8.5 Mil a year.

I just had to post this here, since it is baseball related. Really, it is. Just wait for it.

Q. What is an Economic Stimulus payment?

A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.

Q. Where will the government get this money?

A. From taxpayers.

Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?

A. Only a smidgen.

Q. What is the purpose of this payment?

A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.

Q. But isn’t that stimulating the economy of Asia?

A. Shut up or you don’t get your check.

Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the US economy by spending your stimulus check wisely:

1. If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, your money will go to China.

2. If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to Saudi Arabia.

3. If you purchase a computer, it will go to India.

4. If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico, Honduras or Guatemala.

5. If you buy a car, it will go to Japan or Korea.

6. If you purchase useless plastic stuff, it will go to Taiwan.

7. If you pay off your credit cards, or buy stock, it will go to pay management bonuses and be hidden in offshore accounts.

Or, you can keep the money in America by:

1. Spending it at yard sales or flea markets, or…

2. Going to baseball or football games, or…

3. Hiring prostitutes, or…

4. Buying cheap beer or…

5. Getting tattoos.

These are the only wholly-American-owned businesses still operating in the US today.

Conclusion:

The absolute best way to stimulate the US economy is to:
go to a ball game with a prostitute that you met at a yard sale
and drink beer until you’re drunk enough to go get tattooed.

😆

I think I can hear the Star Spangled Banner right now…

Gives new meaning to going to a “ball game” Ber…..

Yep, I got tired of trying to “Buy American” when I realized I would have to go naked and barefoot…. Now I just try to shop at the stores where the sales people are friendly and knowledgeable. Like choosing between Harbor Freight, Walmart and Tractor Supply. Your going to get Chinese goods no matter but the folks at Tractor Supply are so much nicer even though the prices at Harbor Freight are cheapest. Guess where that leaves Walmart…

A little tip the next time you have tooth pain Berigan but can’t see a dentist right away, take a whole aspirin and place it on the offending tooth and bite down. The pain won’t cease completely but it will help for a while. Tequila, titrated to effect will also work but that’s another story.

Thanks for the tip Gil! My Mom liked Tequila in Margaritas but I would have to drink…drink…hmmm, beer I guess. Not much of a fan of alcohol…yes, I am weird.

I like the Hinske signing, he has been a lucky rabbit foot for teams getting to the W.S. as mentioned above. Also hit 20 HR’s in ’08. So, if Chipper or Glaus go on the DL a time or 3, we have more power in the lineup than Prado at 1st or 3rd.

Something like 800,000 more than the braves! One of many, many reasons I don’t like Bud Selig. Just check out the teams above them in attendance and how much they spend. Well, you will have to use the fuzzy gray matter for how much they spend, but those are all big spenders above them.

Bud Selig is Charlie Finley without the showmanship… At least Charlie was up front about it. Perhaps they should start a AAAA league with the following teams, The Nationals, Reds, Pirates, Marlins and the Brewers. Throw in the Twins, Cleveland, Oakland and Kansas City and you would have a pretty good collection of cheapskate teams. At least the fans would know what to expect… Then again, maybe they already know what to expect.

You need the right combination of ownership, fan base and management to have a winning combination for a franchise.

Does that make him as good, if not better than them??? No…of course Dimaggio would have driven in more if not for WW2. We all know Mantle would have driven in more if not for the bad knees…and the alcoholism.
But, this article points out that Dawson had 12 operations during his career. That horrible turf in Montreal really hurt his speed, (Speed was gone by 28)and had to effect his power to a point, yet as the writer from that same article said, ”He still stole more than 300 bases to go with his 438 home runs. Along with Willie Mays and Barry Bonds, he’s one of three major leaguers to accomplish the feat.”
And He did it without what Bonds used to help him(Though I am sure he would have still reached those numbers anyway)
I think what Bonds, Sosa, and McGuire did unfortunately makes numbers like Dawson and others put up, look less impressive.
I remember what a feared hitter he was, even after the knees were all but ruined. The MVP year with the last place Cubs??? 49 HR’s 137 RBI’s Next highest totals??? Keith Moreland, 27 Hrs 88 RBis . No one else even drove in more than 63. The year after the MVP, 24 HR’s 79 RBI’s, hit .303. Looks pretty so-so. But, 2nd highest B.A., tops in Hr’s and RBI’s The year after that(1989) he only played 118 games, 2 RBI’s less than team leader than Mark Grace…
Last year with the Expos, why he only hit 20 HR’s and drove in only 78 RBI’s. Well, still tops on that team.
And remember what a huge stadium that joke of a park was???
What’s my point??? Well, except for a few years in Montreal, he was surrounded by pretty motley crew of players in Montreal and Chicago. Oh sure, Ryne Sandburg and Tim Raines were teammates, but not big RBI guys, no one to really protect him.
I think if you compare him to his contemporaries, he is a HOF’er.
And comparing his 2774 Hits,(45th all time) 438 HR’s (36th all time) 1591 RBI’s (34th all time) are all HOF numbers, IMO.

Whew! What a relief, Gil! I thought one of us had messed up real bad!

Better (somewhat) news from the nursing home: Mother’s mind is a little better. We actually had a real conversation yesterday! A short one, yes, but a real, honest-to-goodness conversation that made sense. To both of us. Haven’t been able to do that in a very long time!

However, the bad cough is back and I’m afraid they stopped the antibiotics too soon and the pneumonia is bouncing back.

(Pureed) food intake is currently up – always good news – and she’s taking in fluids again, though she can’t swallow unless thickener has been added so the consistency is “honey thick”. Hey, we’ll take what we can get!

Predicting a few flurries here in the early morning hours. Temps actually reached the 40s this afternoon for the first time in can’t-remember-when.

I don’t get cold, but when I do it takes 3 days of equator-type temps to get me warm again. Weird!

Nothing on the baseball news front that I can find. (If Raisins doesn’t find it, it ain’t there!) 😆

While all of the school systems around us are closed today, Mrs. Raisins and both of the Raisinettes are in their respective classrooms today. Nobody wanted to roll oout of the bed and get it going this morning. They wanted the day off, and I was whipped from staying up to watch the BS, er, I mean, BCS National Championship game. Truthfully, though, I didn’t encounter very much ice on our route this morning. It’s just weird that everyone around us called it off. I look at it this way… they’ll be out on a day that the weather is warmer, while everyone else is making up for today.

I wonder if bird/squirrel feeders come under the truth in advertising laws?

I must say, I’ve never seen a feeder that a hungry squirrel could not figure out.

Baseball news has slowed to a creep.

You know, the downside to Frank acting so quickly to fill out the roster is that the speculation is now over. Of course, there are some that believe that he could be tossing up a smoke screen, but I think he’s basically done until spring. There may be some tweaking once spring training is in full swing and teams get a more focused idea of needs. We do have a surplus in some areas.

It’s gonna be a long January…

CL, glad you were able to have a nice talk with your Ma!

Well, let me tell ya, there are some patches of ice that are brutal. So very little moisture fell but what did and was in the shade has made a mess of things. Our subdivision is very hilly. At the base of our street was just a bit of snow and ice. Fun to skid thru since it was only about 10 feet. But, not at the bottom of the last street, but up a little ways, I saw a 40-50 foot patch from one side of the street to the other. A SUV was going backwards…gee, I thought couldn’t he make it up??? Hmmm, then I get on the ice…fairly steep hill…all of the sudden, I am sliding down and right towards him, Fudge! Only I didn’t say fudge! 🙂 Fortunately she keep rolling back, since I did the panic move I should know better, and braked hard…putting in Reverse seemed to do the trick. Should have been in low down the hill.

Then, 4 hours later coming back up the hill, I got a good head of steam going, and slid across from the right to the left side of the road! Thank Goodness no one was on that side! 😯

I have been in the snow a few times, and Ice many, many years ago in Jacksonville(snow on top of it) but this was the worst. Just glare ice this evening. Scary.

Been watching folks slip sliding all over Atlanta on the News. A 29 car accident this A.M. Amazing what damage a lousy 1/2 of snow can do. And most roads are dry right now! Would have been much better off with 3-4 inches of snow.

CL, tis small favors for which we give thanks.

We went to see my mom yesterday, conversation was going well, in a manner of speaking and I thought she was pretty lucid until she asked how her dad was…. I just said fine… No use upsetting her and reminding her that he passed away over 30 years ago.

Gil, the Reds have stockpiled a little talent up there in Cincy. They could really sneak up on some folks in the Central if they stay healthy.

What in the world is Adam thinking? He has now limited his market to maybe a couple of teams, being the hated Mutts and the pitiful Orioles. (And I think the Mutts are gonna bring Delgado back.) Having such a limited market isn’t going to help him get the $$$ he is seeking. He shoulda taken the Giants 2 year offer. They moved on to Aubrey Huff. He isn’t going to get a 3rd year, and he won’t get the guaranteed $17MM San Fran was offering. He should fire his agent immediately. He is and idiot.

You know OBP has too much importance, when you read a post like this at mlbtraderumors.com

Huff, 33, hit .241/.310/.384 in 2009. He will presumably pick up some at bats from Travis Ishikawa, who is seven years younger than Huff and plays better defense. Ishikawa hit .261/.329/.387 last year in 113 games at first base, so he was more productive than Huff at the plate, too.

Ok, Huff drove in 85 RBI’s in an off year. He strangely tanked like Jarrod Washburn did(7.33 ERA) when traded to the Tigers. He hit only .189 the last 40 games.

But, he has driven in 193 Runs the last 2 seasons.
Travis Ishikawa drove in 39 last year. Now, who would you rather have on your team???

HERE’S an interesting little tidbit from SI’s Jon Heyman:

The Braves and Giants are believed to have made offers for Damon, though he hasn’t snapped up either one immediately, leading some to wonder whether the Yankees might get involved again. The Yankees have yet to replace Melky Cabrera and would go with Granderson in left field and Brett Gardner in center if they don’t sign anyone to play left.

That would seem to imply that an offer was made and is still on the table. Can this be believed? Or is this news hype from Heyman?

Win Shares… WAR… whatever.

I understand Avg./RBI/HR.

I even get OBP/SLG and the ever popular OPS, which is nothing but a combination of OBP and SLG. (Why can’t they just stay separate?)

With pitchers, I get ERA, W-L and avg. against. I get quality starts, wins in games started, saves and holds. I get the left/right splits.

But WHIP and ERA+ ? Uh, not so much.

How about “park adjusted”? How do they know?

And fielding? It gets even goofier. UZR? What the…?

I know errors. I know when a player makes errors. I can tell when a player can run, catch or throw. That’s really all I need to know.

In the end, I want my team to have more wins than the others in their division. Then I want them to be the first to win 3, 4 and 4 more in the playoffs.

To achieve that, I want pitchers who can get me alot of quality starts, relievers that can get out of a jam, and closers that can slam the door.

I want batters that can get on, get over and get in. I want sluggers in the middle that can drive in the table setters. I want a bench that can get a hit 3 or 4 times out of 10 when needed.

I enjoy the game on the field. I’ll leave all of the boutique stats for the fantasy guys, because that’s the world they live in anyway. Those are the goobs that have already ceded the 2010 Braves season anyway, based on UZR, WAR and all of the other paper predictions and laptop logic. Their teams don’t play between the lines, but rather in a database.

Nope, I’ll watch games 1 thru 162 on the field and let the teams actually determine the outcome. It’s more fun that way. Especially when my team wins.

Wait… what was your question again?

Salty, It’s another boutique stat… Something that geeks who sit in their mom’s basements think up to pass as conversation with the unwashed…. Now, the real questions should be a player’s WWS numbers… That’s Wins Without Steroids… Throwing Bonds’ name in the mix is like throwing a lemon in with a box of oranges…

It’s sad really, Bonds did not need steroids to get into the Hall of Fame, he was a great player before he juiced up. Now, if he or McGuire get into the Hall of Fame, I will have lost all respect for the BBWA… and they are on pretty thin ice with me as it is…

I agree Raisins, it’s pretty obvious to most of us when a player is good, clutch or just plain lucky.

Some observations from an old guy… Escobar still has a lot of growing up to do. He is a guy who could never make it as a wide receiver even with great hands because he would always be short-arming the ball over the middle, afraid to take the hit that might be coming. It’s why he can’t/won’t second base. Great hitter though, and let’s be honest, it is not a player’s defensive prowess that gets them into the Hall of Fame or even to the All Star game.

And I hope Glaus has pretty good range at first base because some of the throws made to the bag have been pretty errant the past few seasons for the Braves.

Matt Diaz is not nearly the player he could be… He has a good eye and a really quick bat but his swing arc is at such an acute angle that he has such a small margin for error in making contact with the ball. Level that swing out and his average would go up 20 points….

Gil, maybe I’m a Kool-aid drinker, but I think Glaus will be adequate of not better at 1B than most expect.

Glaus himself said pretty much what I have always thought toward playing a new position such as 1B. He still knows how to field a ground ball. He has to learn all of the responsibilities associated with 1B.

Now unless 1 of 3 items comes into play, 1) the player is completely unathletic and a glorified DH to begin with, (Glaus played SS in college), 2) he is a mental midget and can’t learn anything other than what comes naturally, or 3) he is an old dog that refuses to learn a new trick (ahem, Chipper), then he ought to be able to work it out. Glaus will work it out. Bank on it.

Heck, the guy is 6’5″. He’s a nice big target for our wayward tossers. I’m not worried.

I really miss playing golf…. really, really miss it. I think the absence of my ability to play golf led to my decision to go on the DL…

My oldest grandson has expressed and interest in the game so I pulled out one of my many sets of clubs and put together a package for him. If he gets serious about it, I will upgrade his clubs. Golf is a wonderful game that tells a lot about a person’s character. (I will refrain from the Tiger Woods jabs for the present) (but it’s tough)…

A person who lies about his golf score will lie about anything and will lie to himself most of all. Play the course and strive to get better, it’s all one can ask of themselves.

V, Amen to that 8:59 post! Would make a great blog lead for sure! I particularly liked this part ” I enjoy the game on the field. I’ll leave all of the boutique stats for the fantasy guys, because that’s the world they live in anyway. ”

I mentioned a day or so ago how Aubrey Huff was somehow a worse fielder and hitter than a guy who has 58 career RBI’s, cuz he walked a few more times last year.
I also saw another link via MLB trad rumors to some Tampa site. It had the most VORP type of stats I have ever seen.
And the guy running the site was acting like the Rays had made a heck of a trade a year ago, trading Edwin Jackson, a hard throwing stud who is still only 26 and won 27 games the last two years while pitching 400 innings, for a now 25 year old Matt Joyce, who has only hit .246 in more than 300 career AB’s!
See, Joyce is super swell cuz he is under team control for many years, and had nice numbers in the minors. And we all know how well those translate 100% of the time. 🙄
I wasted more times reading the comments, and one guy had the unmitigated gall(Blog first?) to say, how can you say that was a good trade???? and Got beaten up for having the temerity (Blog 2nd?) to doubt the expert who wrote that piece. Sigh….makes me feel old…but I struggle on. Though I am sure one day I will mention someone’s Batting average, and group of youngsters will just roll their eyes at me. “Batting average? What does that matter? 😕

On one hand, the fans deserve better. I get that. I believe that.

But the MLBPA could care less about the Marlins’ fans. To them its all about $$$. I do not like it that they are attmepting to bully (and apparently successfully) the Marlins. It sets a very dangerous precedent.

I also do not like it that MLB and Bud (I used to be a tightwad in Milwaukee) Selig is also pressuring the Marlins. Fundamentally, the franchise is a privately owned business. Yes, it is subject to the rules and regulations of the umbrella organization under which it operates. But as long as they aren’t breaking any of the rules, they should be able to operate how they please. You and I may not like it or agree with it, but it’s theirs to operate as they see fit.

Yep, believe it sets a very dangerous precedent, and probably will embolden the MLBPA to start throwing their weight around in other areas of the game…

Wildcat, I think McGwire came out of retirement for the SOLE PURPOSE of trying to get into the HOF. I think it’s all a well thought out strategy of attempting to get back into the “good graces” of MLB, and garner the support of the voters. I think it is shallow, and pretty darn transparent.

He handled it in such a ham-handed way, there is no return for him. We are a pretty forgiving society, to a point. As long as you don’t blatantly and continually lie to our faces, then run and hide, we often turn the other cheek. McGwire peed in his own corn flakes with this one.

And what a sham of him being a “hitting coach”. The guy tried to hit every stinking pitch to Argentina every at bat. He wouldn’t know a sacrifice from a sack of rice. Did he ever shorten up and go the other way? Did he ever swing to contact to allow a runner to advance?

The guy had a very limited role as a hitter: hit the ball a long way. Period.

I’m sure he’ll be a fine mentor and instructor for Brendan Ryan and Skip Schumaker.

PED – Performance ENHANCING Drugs. Enhances performance. Enables the user to perform beyond his normal capability. Sorta maybe like via- no, CL, don’t even go there!

Use of PEDs should be an automatic disqualification for any award of any type, as well as membership in the HOF.

Those in the Hall who are found to have USED them at ANY point in his career, should be immediately removed without recourse.

Cheating is cheating.

CL, actually that was too much pine tar on the bat got his homer temporarily thrown out. Or disqualified.

Funny, I finally watched the interview with McGuire, and I believe him…this time. I think this amazingly hard on him. Remember, he was a hero, breaking a 40+ year old record.

IF one believes he started using because of injuries,(I never realized til a few years ago that the reason steroids work, is simply because your muscles recover from workouts much more quickly) rather than him wanting to go from 47 homers in my rookie year(before steroids) to 70 many years later, it makes it a different, case than Bonds using them simply becuase he wanted more money and fame.(IMO)

Plus he probably saw ho much stronger that jerk Canseco got from doing them….but hey, not saying he should get in the hall, but I think he should be allowed to be a hitting coach, to be around the game. Heck, aren’t wife beaters like Julio Lugo and Brett Myers allowed to still play the game??? Dare I mention our new first baseman was a roid user????

Speaking of PED’s, didn’t 90% of the players in the 60’s and 70’s take greenies??? didn’t that inhance their game????

Call Canseco a jerk all you want, the guy never lied about what he did. And every thing that he has said is true eventually comes to fruition. Every name he mentions eventually crawls out from under its rock. He says McGwire is still lying. I believe him.

I have no pity for McGwire whatsoever, other than the fact that he is in over his head as a hitting coach. What’s he going to tell hitters about situational hitting? “Me hit ball hard.” That’s about the extent of his career hitting prowess…

Steroids were, ahem…steroids before they were PED’s. It’s a chapter and I’m willing to accept it as such. Consider this (my Rod Serling imitation), you take steroids to recover from an injury. You become aware of others around you taking them and they weren’t injured. You realize how they help, under doctor’s orders, your recovery. Still, the culture you’re in is accepting them as part of the profession now…a new vitamin, as it were. Sure, not everyone is, but those that aren’t, don’t seem to care. To each his own.

I’ll be the lone wolf on this…I’m fine with it. This was baseball’s problem. Too much of the condemnation is occurring after the fact. Where were the true, committed ‘whistle-blowers’ throughout the ‘era’? Huh? Where were they? Who were they?

What did we do as fans? We filled the stadiums. We were captivated by the homerun chase. We watched pitchers tell us ‘chicks dig the long ball’.

It’s an era, it’s past. But to suggest anyone could put the bat on the ball any more effectively because they were on steroids is a fallacy, in my view. Further, throughout the era, new parks came along with shorter fences. New teams were added; pitching was diluted. Players are bigger, stronger, faster…all for a myriad of reasons. Heck, we even live longer…with or without steroids.

Suppose Mark’s motives are pure…he took steroids to recover. Did they strip him of his humanity? Did they cobble his thinking? For every player who took steroids for the right reason, how many took them to enhance? Guess how Mark, and the true users get judged? What’s the motive to speak up? You’re just going to be called a cheat, regardless. The media doesn’t discern, nor does its’ readers. If steroid users are cheats…then cause be damned.

Face it, too many of us harp on Barry Bonds because he’s a jerk. He’s unworthy of even our slightest sympathy. But to simply suggest using steroids is cheating, when baseball clearly benefited and didn’t care, is wrong..again, singularly my view. Baseball may have cheated us, the fans, but we were blind to it at the time and, frankly, were seduced by the ‘drugs’ effects as much as the players were ‘enhanced’. Either everyone wins…or everyone loses.

At day’s end…use an *

Random items, courtesy of Mr. Bowman:

John Smoltz took time about two months ago to begin mending his relationship with the organization. Everything seems to be heading in the right direction on that front.

So while Smoltz might never again throw a pitch for the Braves, I don’t think he’ll feel the desire to stay completely away from Turner Field during his retirement years.

Chuck James is expected to begin throwing for teams within the next week. The 28-year-old southpaw missed all of the 2009 season while recovering from shoulder surgery.

While the Braves might have a need for somebody like James to improve their organizational depth in the starting pitching department, the southpaw may still be upset about how they handled his shoulder which bothered him for more than a year before he was completely shut down.

Chris Resop spent the past season and a half pitching in Japan and now he’s ready to once again compete for a spot in the Braves bullpen. He has signed a Minor League contract and received an invitation to Spring Training.

The 27-year-old right-hander, who made 16 appearances with the 2008 Braves, is excited about his arm strength and the sink that he’s recently gained with his two-seam fastball.

Good bits of info… especially the Smoltz item…

Braves are still pursuing Johnny Damon, and it could happen now that his price has presumably shrunk along with his market.

Stunning…

I still say he needs to fire his agent.

Back to the Damon thing.

I believe it, and I believe it is a real possibility. I never got a sense that Frank was going to sit pat with an outfield of unknown production.

The first question I have is this – would a signing of Damon necessitate a trade of another salary? If so, who’s the odd outfielder out? Melky? N8? Hard to determine.

N8 would give more salary relief since he is due $4.5MM this year and $6.5MM next, plus a buyout in 2012 if his $6.5MM is not picked up for that season.

But that leaves another question – would you rather have Melky and N8, or Melky and Damon. That’s a toughie. I’d rather have N8 and Damon.

Now, that said… Melky and Damon were 2/3 of last year’s WS champions’ OF. So, maybe it’s not such a bad thing after all.

At least it does give us something else to talk about in an otherwise dead January… 😀

from mlb.com: “Johnny Damon has become arguably the biggest name remaining in the free-agent market, but it doesn’t look like he’ll sign with the biggest-spending team, The New York Post believes. The newspaper wrote Wednesday morning that the Yankees are telling agents they only have $2 million to spend on a left fielder, a figure that would be too low to nab Damon, who reportedly wanted a two-year deal worth about $20 million earlier in the offseason.”

ESPN:

The Braves avoided arbitration with outfielder Melky Cabrera by signing him to a $3.1MM deal for 2010. Cabrera earned $1.4MM in ’09, his first arbitration year. He proceeded to hit .274/.336/.416 for the Yankees and was traded to the Braves this winter in the Javier Vazquez deal. Cot’s Baseball Contracts notes that the Yankees paid $500K toward Cabrera’s 2010 salary.

Hmmm… $2.6MM for Melky…

While I like Damon, he is asking way too much money for his skill set. I’m thinking the Braves are stockpiling outfielders. Cabrera is still pretty young. Look at Jason Worth of the Phillies. He did not become an All-Star until he turned 27. With the crack down on PEDs, I think we are going to see players revert to form where they have their best years between the ages of 26 and 32.

How much the Adam get for his one year???

Maybe the $500K only applies to a Braves contract, not to a team the Braves trade him to. Just a guess.

Mr. O’B addressed that subject by saying that the $500K the Braves got from the Bankees was unspecified, and could be used however the Braves chose to do so.

Did you see that Adam got around $4.5MM for 1 year from ‘zona? Holy cow did he miscalculate this year’s market…

177. 179 Salty January 14, 2010 at 2:33 pm

I’d say the Braves mis-calculated, too. Did they make the 2-year/$14M offer…or the 3-year/$20M? Now…the ‘Backs made a good signing…but he won’t be back if matches this past year’s output. I’m stubborn, YES, but given what the Braves have done to date, I feel it was not so smart…aka: stupid, not to try to re-sign Adam, cause the $$ is there. When Glaus, or whomever has Adam’s error total for ’09 by Memorial Day…late starting offense won’t matter so much. But again, as proven and admitted time and time and time again…I’m stubborn. I prefer, persistent! 😆

Well, Salt-man,

We know that as recently as December 13 that Adam was asking for 3 yrs./$31.5MM from Seattle. It was reported as late as December 26 that he was still seeking 3/30. Then, on January 5, just 9 days ago, he turned down 2 yrs./$17.5MM from the Giants.

I think Frank had the market right, which was reflected in the Giants offer. Adam just bungled his way down to the $4.5MM he has agreed to with ARI.

I would not want Adam for $8MM or $9MM… maybe not even for the $4.5MM he got. His history, which is now long enough to call it his expectation, is well documented. I don’t want just half a season out of my 1B. He would have ended up being 2010’s edition of Jeff Francoeur. (Heck, if the guy really wanted to put together a good first half, maybe he’d spend his offseason hitting balls instead of hunting bucks.)

Now, as to Glaus, why does everyone think the guy is a butcher in the field? He was a good SS in college, and a good 3B in the majors. He knows how to field a ground ball. His shoulder has passed muster with all the docs, and he’s been working out like he did earlier in his career. Adam is not the RH cleanup hitter they wanted. Glaus is every bit a RH cleanup hitter. I think this will end up being one of the best signings of this offseason.

I’ll make a bold prediction and say that by the ASB, Glaus will be the more valuable of the two to their respective teams.

“maybe he’d spend his offseason hitting balls instead of hunting bucks.” – of either kind! How many million do these guys require, anyway?? Adam has a big-ol’ sprawling “ranch” in Alabama or wherever it is with matching “hunter’s parties” a la CJones in TX, so why scrabbling for dollars constantly? Enough is never enough for them, it seems. Disgusts me, to be honest. Millionaires trying to become billionaires? 🙄

Stockpiling is a definite sign. I was elated when he came to the Braves and am hopeful that he’ll become the 25+/25 guy that we all hoped he would be. Diaz, Melkey, Nate, and Heyward can form a very creditable (and young) outfield. Jordan Schafer is a wild card… does anyone think he can become a star? I know his wrist was hurt, but geeez! The Importance of Walking

Walking can add minutes to your life.
This enables you at 85 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at $7000 per month.

My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60.
Now he’s 97 years old and we don’t know where the hell he is.

I like long walks… especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.

The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I’m doing..

I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks.
Haven’t lost a pound.
Apparently you have to go there.

Every time I hear the dirty word ‘exercise’, I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

I do have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.

The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they’ll say, ‘Well, she looks good doesn’t she.’

If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.

I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years…
just getting over the hill.

We all get heavier as we get older, because there’s a lot more information in our heads.

A quote: “The Hall is great and a wonderful accomplishment, but to have people come back and say “you helped me through this time” or “I feel like I wouldn’t be where I am right now without a push from you”, those are the types of things that make my job and my life worthwhile and that’s really what it’s all about.”

The Pirates are one of the best AAAA teams in the majors. Look at all the great players who have come through Pittsburgh. It’s not the development or the scouting that is hurting that team, it’s the “Management by Committee” that is destroying a once proud franchise.

And politics… Scott Brown wins in Massachusetts… Obama’s people are already throwing Martha under the bus, got to be getting pretty crowded under there by now.

Yes, I’d say 1.15 million is a real bargain. I hope Pete and hang on long enough to afford a real Rolex some day…

This is from an article in the St. Petersburg Times Newspaper on Sunday.

The Business Section asked readers for ideas on “How Would You Fix the Economy?”

Dear Mr. President,

Please find below my suggestion for fixing America’s economy. Instead of giving billions of dollars to companies that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan.

You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan:

There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force. – Pay them $1 million apiece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

1) They MUST retire. Forty million job openings – Unemployment fixed.
2) They MUST buy a new American CAR. Forty million cars ordered – Auto Industry fixed.
3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage – Housing Crisis fixed.

It can’t get any easier than that!

P.S. – If more money is needed, have all members in Congress and their constituents pay their taxes…

… and Mr. President…while you’re at it, make Congress retire on
Social Security and Medicare … I’ll bet both programs would be fixed – PRONTO!!

Something that may be worthwhile:

THINGS YOUR BURGLAR WON’T TELL YOU:

1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.

2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier.

3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste … And taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have.

4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it.

5. If it snows while you’re out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway.

6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don’t let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it’s set. That makes it too easy.

7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom-and your jewelry. It’s not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.

8. It’s raining, you’re fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door-understandable. But understand this: I don’t take a day off because of bad weather.

9. I always knock first. If you answer, I’ll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don’t take me up on it.)

10. Do you really think I won’t look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet.

11. Here’s a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids’ rooms.

12. You’re right: I won’t have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it’s not bolted down, I’ll take it with me.

13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you’re reluctant to leave your TV on while you’re out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at faketv.Com.)

8 MORE THINGS A BURGLAR WON’T TELL YOU:

1. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook.

2. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors.

3. I’ll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he’ll stop what he’s doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn’t hear it again, he’ll just go back to what he was doing. It’s human nature.

4. I’m not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it?

5. I love looking in your windows. I’m looking for signs that you’re home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I’d like. I’ll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets.

6. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It’s easier than you think to look up your address.

7. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it’s an invitation.

8. If you don’t answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right in.

U.N. climate chiefs apologize for glacier error
By Matthew Knight, for CNN

(CNN) — The U.N.’s leading panel on climate change has apologized for misleading data published in a 2007 report that warned Himalayan glaciers could melt by 2035.

In a statement released Wednesday, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said estimates relating to the rate of recession of the Himalayan glaciers in its Fourth Assessment Report were “poorly substantiated” adding that “well-established standards of evidence were not applied properly.”

The apology follows a growing storm of controversy which initially forced the IPCC to concede that data relating to the Himalayan glacier melt included in the 2007 report was not backed up by sufficient scientific data.

Speaking at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi Wednesday, the IPCC chairman, Rajendra Pachauri admitted errors had been made but said it was not an excuse to question the legitimacy of all global warming science.

In other words, “There’s no proof, just trust me on this one.”

Sure…

Ber, a 3 star prospect is still a guy to keep your eyes on. Only the elite are 5 star. To rate any stars means you have a bright future.

Now, about the young southpaw…

Mike Minor is a 6’3″ lefty with a plus changeup and cool mound presence. Remind you of anyone we know?

He is a very cerebral pitcher who called his own games at Vandy. Minor says, “If you’re calling your own game, you’re thinking the whole time. You’re paying attention to each guy rather than just looking in to the catcher and seeing a sign, throwing it and not knowing why you’re throwing it.” I like that… alot.

Jim Czajkowski coached him in Class A Rome and for Saguaro in the AFL. He says, “For Mike to be intelligent, to know what he feels when he throws, and what to throw in certain situations puts him ahead of the game than most college guys.”

His changeup is his best pitch, followed by his slider, fastball and a curveball that is kind of a “showcase” pitch that will keep batters from sitting on his slider. He threw his fastball in the 91-93 range in Arizona.

Most importantly, he throws strikes. He got into four games for Rome after being drafted, and finished with a 0.64 ERA and a 17-0 K/BB rate in 14 innings.

He probably doesn’t project to any higher than a #3 starter, hence the 3 star rating. But with Hanson and Jurjjens already in Atlanta, and with Teheran and Vizcaino in the pipeline, he really doesn’t have to be.

Most importantly, he’s a lefty. We are a “little thin” [dripping with sarcasm] there. If you’ll notice, he’s the only lefty in the top 10 prospects, on a team that has no lefties on it’s current rotation. I’d say he’s a pretty important guy to keep our eyes on.

Just for kicks, here’s Baseball Prospectus’ profile of JHey:

1. Jason Heyward, OF
DOB: 8/9/89
Height/Weight: 6-4/220
Bats/Throws: L/L
Drafted/Signed: 1st round, 2007, Henry County HS (GA)
2009 Stats: .296/.369/.519 at High-A (49 G); .352/.446/.611 at Double-A (47 G); .364 at Triple-A (3 G)
Last Year’s Ranking: 1

Year in Review: Atlanta’s top prospect flirted with .400 at Double-A as a teenager while establishing himself as the top position prospect in the game.
The Good: Heyward has the potential to be a “face of the franchise” talent. He’s arguably the best pure hitter in the minors, combined with outstanding plate discipline and pitch recognition. He has the ability to contend for batting and on-base titles, all in a massive athletic package that’s loaded with tools. His raw power is plus, his speed is average to a tick above, and he’s a very good outfielder who can even play center in a pinch. His arm is a true plus-plus weapon.
The Bad: When asked what aspects of Heyward’s game need improvement, one scout simply replied, “Nothing.” The only real concern about Heyward is his health, as Heyward has played just 226 games over the past two years due to a variety of minor maladies.
Ephemera: Heyward’s plate discipline may have actually dropped him in the draft, as he walked so much against lesser high school competition than many scouts complained about never getting to see him swing the bat, making him difficult to evaluate.
Perfect World Projection: He’s a game-changing superstar.
Path to the Big Leagues: The Braves have a slot waiting for him in their outfield.
Timetable: Heyward spent significantly more time in big-league camp last year just because manager Bobby Cox liked watching him play so much. He’ll be gunning for a big-league job this spring, with a 50/50 chance of breaking camp with the Braves and a nearly guaranteed major-league role by the All-Star break.

More Mike Monor stuff, from BravesBuzz:

Minor’s number one advantage is his command and control. He can throw any pitch at any time with excellent location, and he has plenty to choose from with a fastball that ranges in the high-80’s and low-90’s, his best being a plus changeup, and a good slider and curve to keep hitters honest. Minor is the ideal mid-rotation left-handed starter.

But that is also the knock on him. His ceiling isn’t that high, especially for a #7 pick, and there will always be the chance of him getting knocked around in the majors due to a lack of overpowering stuff. This will hang over his head until he proves himself in the Braves’ rotation. Turning 22 today (happy birthday, Mike), Minor will shoot up the system quickly. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him skip Myrtle Beach and try his hand at Mississippi for 2010. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see him establish himself as a #3 starter in Atlanta in a couple years.

So the debate regarding Minor comes down to whether you want the almost-sure-thing #3 starter or the high risk, potential ace type like Mike Leake at #8.

Uh, didn’t I just say that? 😉

And upon further review… All that pitching and some pretty solid guys already under contract for the next 2 or 3 years, I look for the Braves to be willing to trade some of that pitching for a real game changer type youngster.

I think the Braves may have learned their lesson with the Texeria trade. I don’t think they are going to be willing to give up that many prospects for one player again.

While it is not truly a “state tournament”, Georgia does not have a state sanctioning oversight body for Middle School athletics, it’s pretty darn close. with Obama!’

You might think I’m getting senile, that I’ve gone off my rocker, and maybe I
have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore..

The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in
handcuffs.. While we’re fiddling in Afghanistan, Iran is completing their
nuclear bombs and missiles and nobody seems to know what to do. And the
liberal press is waving ‘pom-poms’ instead of asking hard questions. That’s
not the promise of the ‘America ‘ my parents and yours traveled across the
ocean for. I’ve had enough. How about you?

I’ll go a step further. You can’t call yourself a patriot if you’re not
outraged. This is a fight I’m ready and willing to have. The Biggest ‘C’ is
Crisis! (Iacocca elaborates on nine C’s of leadership, with crisis being the
first.)

Leaders are made, not born. Leadership is forged in times of crisis. It’s easy
to sit there with thumb up your butt and talk theory. Or send someone else’s
kids off to war when you’ve never seen a battlefield yourself. It’s another
thing to lead when your world comes tumbling down.

On September 11, 2001, we needed a strong leader more than any other time in
our history. We needed a steady hand to guide us out of the ashes. A hell of a
mess, so here’s where we stand.

We’re immersed in a bloody war now with no plan for winning and no plan for
leaving. But our soldiers are dying daily.

We’re running the biggest deficit in the history of the world, and it’s
getting worse every day!

We’ve lost the manufacturing edge to
Asia, while our once-great companies are getting slaughtered by health care
costs.

Gas prices are going to skyrock again, and nobody in power has a lucid plan to
open drilling to solve the problem. This country has the largest oil reserves
in the WORLD, and we cannot drill for it because the politicians have been
bought by the flea-hugging environmentalists.

Our schools are in a complete disaster because of the teachers union.

Our borders are like sieves and they want to give all illegals amnesty and
free healthcare.

The middle class is being squeezed to death every day.

These are times that cry out for leadership.

But when you look around, you’ve got to ask: ‘Where have all the leaders
gone?’ Where are the curious, creative communicators? Where are the people of
character, courage, conviction, omnipotence, and common sense? I may be a
sucker for alliteration, but I think you get the point.

Name me a leader who has a better idea for homeland security than making us
take off our shoes in airports and throw away our shampoo?

We’ve spent billions of dollars building a huge new bureaucracy, and all we
know how to do is react to things that have already happened.

Everyone’s hunkering down, fingers crossed, hoping the government will make it
better for them. Now, that’s just crazy.. Deal with life.

Name me an industry leader who is thinking creatively about how we can restore
our competitive edge in manufacturing. Who would have believed that there
could ever be a time when ‘The Big Three’ referred to Japanese car companies?
How did this happen, and more important, look what Obama did about it!

Name me a government leader who can articulate a plan for paying down the
debit, or solving the energy crisis, or managing the health care problem. The
silence is deafening. But these are the crises that are eating away at our
country and milking the middle class dry.

I have news for the Chicago gangsters in Congress. We didn’t elect you to turn
this country into a losing European Socialist state. What is everybody so
afraid of? That some bonehead on NBC or CNN news will call them a name? Give
me a break. Why don’t you guys show some spine for a change?

Had Enough? Hey, I’m not trying to be the voice of gloom and doom here. I’m
trying to light a fire. I’m speaking out because I have hope – I believe in
America . In my lifetime, I’ve had the privilege of living through some of
America’s greatest moments. I’ve also experienced some of our worst crises:
The ‘Great Depression,’ ‘World War II,’ the ‘Korean War,’ the ‘Kennedy
Assassination,’ the ‘Vietnam War,’ the 1970’s oil crisis, and the struggles of
recent years since 9/11.

Make your own contribution by sending this to everyone you know and care
about. It’s our country, folks, and it’s our future. Our future is at stake!!

Found this – though I don’t know how many here can relate – 🙂

My forgetter’s getting better,
But my rememberer is broke
To you that may seem funny
But, to me, that is no joke

For when I’m ‘here’ I’m wondering
If I really should be ‘there’
And, when I try to think it through,
I haven’t got a prayer!

Oft times I walk into a room,
Say ‘what am I here for?’
I wrack my brain, but all in vain!
A zero, is my score.

At times I put something away
Where it is safe, but, Gee!
The person it is safest from
Is, generally, me!

When shopping I may see someone,
Say ‘Hi’ and have a chat,
Then, when the person walks away
I ask myself, ‘who the hell was that?

Yes, my forgetter’s getting better
While my rememberer is broke,
And it’s driving me plumb crazy
And that isn’t any joke.

Y’all probably already know this but I just found this:

01/23/10 10:00 PM EST (from mlb.com)

ARLINGTON — A group headed by club president Nolan Ryan and Pittsburgh attorney Chuck Greenberg has completed the initial step of purchasing controlling interest in the Rangers from owner Tom Hicks.

An official announcement was made by Hicks Sports Group on Saturday night. There is no final sale price, but it is expected to be in excess of $500 million. The agreement is still subject to approval by Major League Baseball and the lending institutions that hold the debt on Hicks Sports Group. There is also still some financing that needs to be completed.

“Together, we have worked exhaustively since last month to attain this agreement,” Hicks said in a statement. “It’s a complex business deal that positions the franchise positively for the future.”

Hicks, in a separate transaction, agreed to sell or transfer 153 of the 195 acres around the Ballpark that his family owns in return for cash, notes and a minority ownership position within the Rangers.

Greenberg will serve as managing partner and CEO of what will be known as Rangers Baseball Express. Ryan will be a limited partner and remain club president.

Another great email –

One day the old German Shepherd starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he’s lost. Wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.

The old German Shepherd thinks, ‘Oh, oh! I’m in deep doo-doo now!’ Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap, the old German Shepherd exclaims loudly, ‘Boy, that was one delicious leopard! I wonder, if there are any more around here?’

Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. ‘Whew!’ says the leopard, ‘That was close! That old German Shepherd nearly had me!’

Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard.. So, off he goes, but the old German Shepherd sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up.

The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard.

The young leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, ‘Here, monkey, hop on my back and see what’s going to happen to that conniving canine!

Now, the old German Shepherd sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, ‘What am I going to do now?’, but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn’t seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old German Shepherd says…

‘Where’s that damn monkey? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard!

Moral of this story….

Don’t mess with the old dogs… age and skill will always overcome youth and treachery!

BS and brilliance only come with age and experience.

I recall someone writing that Mike Minor is a very cerebral pitcher, much like Greg Maddux. Chuck James is the anti-thesis of those two. He throws what is called and has no clue as to why. Now that being said, whatever works. I remember a lot of folks getting upset anytime Chuck’s name came up in possible trade rumors… Goes to show you had fleeting fame and fortune can be. From hero to zero in one pitch.

Now stuff….. Remember how I have been saying that I have been spending time straightening out my work shed? Well, I guess I have made it a bit too hospitable. A skunk (other than me) has taken up residence somewhere in the depths of the building. Now, I don’t mind wild animals stopping by for a visit now and then but I really take offense when they leave a calling card.

I still have memories of my grandfather shooting a skunk that had taken up residence under his front porch. A real life lesson there as I will never ever shoot one of those striped wood kitties unless there is lots of ventilation.

That said, I have been very careful of late as to how I have moved items around in the shed, no use upsetting the denizens anymore than I have to. I would trap the little sucker but then, what do you do with him after you catch him????

MLBTR:

Lefty Noah Lowry is set to throw for teams Tuesday, reports ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick. The 29-year-old seeks a one-year contract after battling thoracic outlet syndrome the last few years.

Crasnick expects about 15 teams to attend the session, including the Reds, Red Sox, Cardinals, Braves, Astros, Dodgers, Mariners, Cubs, Nationals and Mets.

Thoracic outlet syndrome is a combination of pain in the neck and shoulder, numbness and tingling of the fingers, and a weak grip. The thoracic outlet is the area between the rib cage and collar bone. I hope Lowry has won the battle, else he is done…

Age: 20 | Bats: L | Height: 6-4 | Weight: 220
2009 Stats: .323 AVG | 17 HR | 63 RBI | .408 OBP | 10 SB
Finished ’09: Gwinnett (Triple-A International League)
Jason HeywardThe Skinny: Right now there are several star-caliber young hitters on the verge of making their mark in the majors, and Heyward is one of the players leading the pack. The power is still developing for the 20-year-old Georgia native, but Braves fans can be confident that his short left-handed swing will be a big part of the middle of their order for many years.

2009 Stats: 0-1 W-L | 0.64 ERA | 14 IP | 17 SO | 0 BB
Finished ’09: Rome (Single-A South Atlantic League)
The Skinny: Some looked at the selection of Minor at seventh overall in the 2009 draft as odd, but I think it’s safe to say the Braves know what they are doing when it comes to scouting and player development. Minor should be a fast mover, and his stuff and feel from the left side should equal a long big-league career.

First, it’s pretty cool that the Braves have 6 of the top 100 prospects in all of baseball, including 3 in the top 50.

Second, somehow, Arodys Vizcaino was left off the list. Honestly, he should be there right along Teheran. That should make 7 of the top 100 for the Braves.

And JHey at 4 is a little weak.

Yeah, I was wondering about that myself. I have heard more about him, than any other position player.
Desmond Jennings is 23, so he may be ahead of Heyward right now, but Mike Stanton(Hey, didn’t he play for us? 😉 ) is also just 20. Perhaps this scout has seen more of him. Saying he is the “closest thing you’ll find to Dave Winfield” is high praise

It could also be a 9.6 on a scale of 1-to 10 for Stanton, and a 9.5 for Heyward.

I’m all off the “acquire another bat” bandwagon. I don’t think there’s anybody left who could make any real impact, especially for any $$$ they’d command. Honestly, what Melky/Diaz should produce will be equivalent if not better than Johnny Damon (who could get $6MM from Oakland any day now) is likely to give. Seriously, I think a Melky/Diaz platoon will be just fine for this year. I still look at N8/Schafer/JHey as the future, and a pretty good one. Who knows? Maybe sooner than later.

Plus, I think you’re going to see him start to show the power you would want at this position. Based solely on the raw strength shown during batting practice, Prado has as much power as anybody on the club right now.

Yow! Rosey gives a pretty scathing assessment of the Mets organization, from top to bottom:

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/rosenthal-on-new-york-mets-omar-minaya-012610

Excerpts:

Yet, even in an offseason in which the Mets signed Bay to a four-year, $66 million contract, their front office has committed one misstep after another, from its squabble with center fielder Carlos Beltran over his knee surgery to its botched courtship of free-agent catcher Bengie Molina to its failure to address the team’s biggest area of need — starting pitching. That one stings…

Minaya looms as the obvious fall guy, but Minaya is only part of the problem. The Mets need to start over — completely over. They need to depart their parallel universe and rejoin the rest of the baseball world. Well… the truth hurts.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not reveling in the Mets’ miseries. 😐

OK, maybe I am…

To me, the Mets rival the Nationals but with a bigger payroll. Josie and I were taking about it over lunch today and my assessment is the Phillies are still the team to beat in the division. Their pitching isn’t as deep as the Braves but wooboy… They can sure put some crooked numbers up on the board in a hurry. It’s not so much as to how the Braves will fare against Philadelphia head to head but how bad the Phils beat up on the rest of the national league.

Prado is still growing into his body… It takes a bit longer now without PEDs….

Josies’ least favorite player is Escobar… She thinks he is a wimp… Hey, her words not mine… She was pretty funny though when she went into her act of Yuni dodging base-runners and baseballs….

Glause could be a big key for the Bravos this year. If he plays well then the team should do well. And of course the question of whether “good” Chipper or “bad” Chipper shows up this season.

I am reminded of how much better John Riggins was after he missed a few games rather than playing every week. Chipper played a lot last year, maybe he is just not capable of playing everyday any longer. Happens… and without the magic jungle juice it happens sooner these days.

And snow…. headed our way again… dang that global warming anyhow….

Gil, you hit the nail on the head! Sure, with some breaks, the Mets can be “ok”….with a few breaks, even compete for the wildcard. Well, a lot of breaks. But, the Nats sure can pound the ball, and if that rookie, who’s name escapes me(you all know who I mean) is the real deal, they might be a .500 + team. Good for them, bad for us.
We may be in the AL East of the NL…if that makes sense.

And the Johnny Damon debate rages on…

Some outlets continue to link Damon to Atlanta, others continue to debunk it. NBCsports has even published a report saying that they have confirmed with team officials that there is no interest, and details why.

I have wavered over this in recent days, but one ever-present fact now dominates my opinion on this, and that fact is that the Braves seem determined to allow JHey to win the opening day job in RF. For all of the reasons that he might ought to remain at AAA until June or so, (a separate debate altogether), I honestly believe the job is his to lose. It’s just the feeling I get from all of the material I have read – which has been wide and varied.

Now, if JHey were to remain at Gwinnett for half a season, then yeah, Damon – or somebody – makes sense for us, allowing the Melky/Matty platoon to play half a season in RF. But with JHey in RF, I’d just as soon have the Melky/Matty platoon in LF as have Damon.

Why? I’ve detailed it already… no need to go there again.

Understand, though, that this stand is predicated on JHey being in RF to start the season. That’s the key. And should he not ice the job in spring, well… Frank will have a few weeks to make an adjustment.

I would not count Schafer out as a dark horse candidate to return to the line-up if he has a good spring. He has already broken his major league time barrier, so the clock has started on his arbitration eligibility. I expect he has been working out with that high dollar pitching machine of his all winter too.

It would make sense to bring up Heyward in June, financially that is… And it would allow for him to be the designated rookie this year.

According to the NBCsports article, the following reasons are given for the Braves’ lack of interest in Damon:

(1) his arm just won’t play in the Turner Field outfield

(2) he’s just not versatile enough to move around, and the Braves want to be able to move around their outfielders this year

(3) he’s going to want too much money

And speaking for myself, while he did hit 24 HR’s last season, there is no way he would hit that many with The Ted as his home park as opposed to the Yankees’ quaint little rec field.

From Unwise Microwave Oven Experiments:

Some Microwave Oven Myths
Q: Don’t you need distilled water to cause superheating and “explosions?” Impure tap water only boils, it won’t explode.

Ummm. What?

Of course impure water can “explode.” That’s why people get scalded; they re-heat their coffee in microwave ovens and then quickly add sugar. Coffee is extremely impure water! To cause “coffee explosions,” you don’t need special pure water. All you need is water that lacks micro-bubbles.

It seems that some recent TV show tries to prove that only pure water can superheat and “explode.” This is wrong. Probably the creators of that show did not know an important fact: nucleation centers for boiling are actually tiny bubbles. While solid crystals will grow upon solid nucleation centers found in impure liquids, the gas bubbles in cola, and in boiling pots, grow upon microscopic seed-bubbles. You can’t grow crystals unless you have a solid microscopic seed. And you can’t boil water unless you have invisibly small seed-bubbles present. It doesn’t matter how filthy your water is, or how many crystal nucleation centers it contains… if it lacks seed-bubbles then it will not boil normally, instead it will superheat.

Clearly this has nothing to do with distilled water. In fact it’s very easy to boil ultra-pure distilled water normally, without explosions. First chill and shake up your bottle of distilled water thoroughly. This creates lots of nucleation centers for boiling. And it’s easy to make “impure” water explode; impure water called coffee and soup. If tap water has had all the bubbles cleared out by earlier boiling or by simply sitting for days in an open container, then it will superheat, and when sugar is dumped in, it will go DOOSH and spray all over.

Newsday’s Ken Davidoff:

There has been “increased momentum” towards an agreement between the Mets and John Smoltz. It’s believed that the 42-year-old is seeking $4MM guaranteed, plus performance bonuses.

Though the Mets have yet to make Smoltz a formal offer, they have expressed enthusiasm about bringing him aboard. Likewise, the righty is encouraged by their level of interest.

Johnny… Johnny…

Is it about the money? Trying to squeeze out a few more $$$ before the arm falls off? It’s obviously not about the playoffs, which was his “reason” last year for jetting to the Sawx. What other reason can there be if it isn’t the $$$ ?

You know, I love me some Smoltz. He was always my favorite Brave as long as he was a Brave, but at some point his motivation does come into question. After a little time of separation, and a little time looking at Smoltz with a little more objectivity, I really think the guy just digs having all of the attention. It’s why he has always been so outspoken, before and after his ugly divorce with the Braves.

I’d like to think I’ll always think of Smoltz as a Brave, pitching late in the season like a warrior, with his arm barely hanging from his shoulder, the searing pain painted clearly on his face as he rocks and fires another strike three! I hope he doesn’t ruin it for me…

And that explains it for me Raisins, I have had several DOOSH moments with reheated coffee, and I always wondered why but was too lazy to seek as to the why for…

That’s what has baffled me so! There is NO TRACE of anything either on the cup or inside the microwave. NOTHING. Only the half cup of coffee that had been IN the cup that was suddenly sitting wetly in the glass turntable.

><The club that other teams think makes the most sense [for Johnny Damon] – Detroit – just doesn't seem all that interested. The Reds? They've been focused on their infield, not their outfield. The Braves? We hear they haven’t talked to Scott Boras about Damon in a month and a half.

><But we keep hearing that, all those Mets rumors to the contrary, John Smoltz is in no rush to sign. Clubs that have spoken with his agents, Keith Grunewald and Lonnie Cooper, report that if Smoltz doesn’t think the fit is right, he might wait until late in spring training to sign. He’s also considering waiting even longer, to position himself as somebody’s midseason cavalry force.

This is the first time in my lifetime I can remember two deep snows like this in a single season. I can count on one hand the number of really deep snows we have had period. One when I was about 6 or 7, one in ’72, one in ’81 and that’s about it. Just a really odd occurrence.

I expect I will have to fill the feeders sometime today. The word has gotten around that there was food to be had at our place. The cardinals have tried to defend their territory as best they could but just too many other birds for them to fend off them all.

Oddly, I have not seen the murder of crows than normally hang out nearby. We have put the dogs on the back porch and plugged in a heater for them. They seem pretty content given their circumstances. They still don’t appear all that pleased with the toilet accommodations but they will just have to cope with that one on their own.

I guess the only really bad thing about the snow is our inability to get up to Ashland to check on mom. Likely it will be Wednesday before we venture out. Depending on how cold it is tomorrow, I may get the tractor out and clear our road some. I would have to change the blade though and I am not sure I can find it.

The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge closed at 6 p.m. until further notice while emergency responders and crews cleared the scene of three accidents caused by the icy conditions. The accidents involved at least eight vehicles and were on both sides of the bridge.

CL… It’s all those folks from up north thinking they can drive in bad weather not realizing that in the south, they put a crown in the road to aid in drainage from the rains. DUH!!!!

I was once working a traffic accident and the firetruck actually slide off the road into the ditch because of the slope.

It’s so bright outside that I think I may have to put on my sunglasses just to look out the window… 8)

Why CL stayed home: “Calls about ice-related crashes were coming in to New Hanover County 911 so fast Saturday evening that dispatchers were sending a steady stream of e-mail messages to N.C. Highway Patrol troopers instead of calling them on the radio.”

I did not encounter even one ice-related problem here at my computer! 😆

CL, you made the right choice! 🙂

Accidents here in and around the ATL because of black ice…including two women who were killed after they left their vehicle to see the damage to their car! 😦

The only people who should be out and about in this type of weather are law enforcement and safety personnel. Highway crews and utilities folks. Everyone else should just suck it up and stay home for everyone’s sake.

My idiot son-in-law (the Mets fan) decided he and his wife would go to Starbucks last night…. Took them two hours to get back home and guess what, Starbucks was closed…. Dumb and dumber if you ask me.

We did have one of the younger guys in the neighborhood stop by and check on us today. We thanked him for his concerned… Still, we are not leaving the house until the secondary roads are clear. I am not worrier too much about my driving skills but too many other folks with cell phones stuck to their ears for my comfort.

Besides, I am already unsteady enough with my gimpy knees to compensate for slippery surfaces. As long as the cats and dogs have enough food, we will survive.

Then again, I might just get the ATV out tomorrow… Yeehaw….

“Dumb and dumber if you ask me” 😆 Who has to go to Starbucks immediately after a major snowstorm?? *wow*

Glad the guy checked up on you old folks! *ducks thrown snowball*

“with cell phones stuck to their ears” Don’t get me started!!!! *starts to get red in the face!*

No Ber we down here in the deep south have had a chilly and windy last couple of days but no snow. No measurable snow here since the winter of 91. Last year snow made it as far south as Montgomery. My daughter and grandaughter Sydney (now age 5) drove up to the Auburn Univ campus which a had couple of inches. Sydney’s first snow adventure. Hundreds of snowmen littered the campus. They had a ball. Totally unlike the mess y’all are experiencing.

Took Sydney to her first basketball game last night. Troy beat S. Ala in OT. Very exciting game! Sat near the floor close to the pep band and cheerleaders. Great time.

Hey kids! Sorry the weather turned nasty again. Dad suprised us with a trip to Disney ( largely so Mom & Melissa could de-stress; lots of work issues). We had to dodge some cold rain Sat. afternoon & it was pretty chilly today but still a fun time.

Those are great pics, Ber. I love Savannah. We stayed in a wonderful B&B there & walked all over the historic district. It’s a perfect walking city.

Now Smoltz. You know I used to love the guy, one of my favorite Braves ever but now he’s starting to disgust me.

Wildcat, I used to be a big time Virginia Commonwealth fan, all the way back to when they were RPI… Now, not so much… I am not sure exactly why or when I fell out of love with collage basketball but it happened…

I still follow the game a little bit but I have not been to a game live in a really long time. It was fun though while it lasted… All the rowdy fans use to rock the coliseum. Had some pretty good coaches and players make their way through here. I’m glad you have introduce your granddaughter to the excitement however, gives her something to look forward to.

Jenn, I have to agree a little bit with you on Smoltz. Hard to leave on a down note for some players. I guess we all want to go out at the top of our game but we don’t always realize when that is. I think John has a great career ahead of him as a broadcaster but he has to vanquish his demons first.

Woo-hoo!!!

Feb. 1… the first day of voluntary pitching camp at The Ted with Roger!

That is a Braves fan’s Groundhog Day, except it always signals that Spring Training is right around the corner.

I’m proudly donning my Braves game cap today.

Woo-Hoo!!!!!! 😀

Yep, this is the day all the rookies who do not have a spot sewn up to try to impress the boss with their work ethic. So, what do they actually work on? Muscle stretching?

I know Leo use to do long toss and football throwing to build up arm strength. Is it really more about conditioning?

Still Ber, you are right, baseball season begins today in Atlanta… 🙂

Gil, I don’t know what Roger does specifically, but I imagine it is an extension of what Leo did. Leo’s purpose behind “Camp Leo” was to do exactly as you said, begin to build arm strength. The point was simple. Why spend the first 2 weeks of spring training getting your arm ready to work, instead of doing the actual work? Braves pitchers were always ready to begin working on pitches, location, new stuff, etc. from day 1. No wasted time. Advantage Leo. Now, advantage Roger.

Mr. O’B was at the pitching camp this morning. He says the following pitchers were in attendance:

Tim Hudson, Kris Medlen, Pete Moylan, Eric O’Flaherty, Lee Hyde, Todd Redmond, Johnny Venters, Chris Resop and Ryne Reynoso.

He reports that Tommy Hanson will be there later this week. He was back home in Cali attending the Grammies. For real.

I wish more of the guys were there. Only one of the 5 starters? Really? KK I can understand. Sorta. Maybe JJJ. But where’s DLowe? And where are Wags and Saito? C’mon, guys… :\
