96: Your Schizophrenic Atlanta Braves!

by Berigan

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your schizophrenic Atlanta Braves!

Well, what does one make of this team??  After that wondrous opening day win by the score of 16-5, they looked like world beaters. On May 4th, they were 11-14, the only team in the east with a sub .500 record.

At one point this year, they had worst road record in the league (5-14) and a .217 road batting average. If the manager was anyone not named Bobby Cox, he would have been on such a hot seat, he would have to wear asbestos underwear!

We all know they looked like a team that had the life sucked out of them. I don’t know if any team on a losing streak looks quite as helpless as the Braves do. Heck, I’m not tellin’ y’all anything you don’t already know about the Braves on the skids. Or am I?? Nope…don’t think so.

But, what I do know is it’s bad form to start a sentence with a conjunction. Do it all the time though. Plus, gotta pad this out….pretty sure a  blog lead has to be at least 100 words, right??  😉  [Editor’s note: At minimum, Ber!]

On May 23rd, the team was 5-1 in the previous 6 road games, after going 5-14 in first 19. That’s kind of hard for a team to do, but nothing is impossible with the 2010 version of the team! 😛 Over the last 10 games, the Braves are 7-3. In the same span, the Phillies are 4-6, have completely stopped hitting, and only have a 2 1/2 game lead over the Bravos. Now…we all know if there is one certainty in this sport, the Phils will hit. So…can we really compete with that team or are the Braves just a wildcard team??

Imagine if Liberty had been more concerned about keeping Heyward from being a super 2 player and he was being held back like Stephen Strasburg has been for the Nats? We would be in last place and out of the hunt, no doubt about it. Have to give credit where credit is due.

Don’t know if Wren, J.S, etc had to put in a big fight about this, but so very glad we have had the chance to see a future (present?) Superstar in action.

And (oops, conjunction again!) while it looked a few weeks ago that there was no chance of the playoffs this year, right now, we are in the thick of a playoff race and that’s a good thing! 🙂

Is this thing long enough??? Hmmm, what else can I add…Hey, did I mention a list I saw that listed the top 10 switch hitters of all time? Chipper was ranked number 2! Then, I looked down the list, saw no Ted Simmons. Chili Davis was 10th. 1372 RBI’s .274 BA.  Read  in the comments that Ted Simmons was 11th on this writer’s list.  A guy who drove in 1389 RBI’s and had a .285 BA. All the while catching. Sigh….no respect, Simba gets no respect. There, just the perfect length. 😆    [Editor’s note: FYI, Ber, 490 words. 🙂 ]

Not first! Haha, just kidding. Great stuff Ber… just long enough to convey the fact that the Braves are a real schizo team. Thank goodness that J-Hey has made the quick transition to stardom.

Speaking of schizo… this Braves vs. Marlins game is typical for the Braves. Looks like all Huddy had to do is get out of the 5th inning and the rain might make this a Braves winner. Not so quick say the Marlins. The stinkin pitcher even gets a hit.

Come on Huddy… one more out! YES!!!

    GO BRAVES!!!

Great lead Ber, conveys the very essence of this year’s edition of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. And yes(oops) Ted Simmons does deserve to be in the HOF.

Now tonight, that was some scary 4th inning for Huddy.

Watching the top 25 All time Braves moments. My favorite is still “THE CATCH”.

Nice win by the Bravos last night. Gutty performance by Hudson in the pouring rain. Tell me why they didn’t suspend play in the top of the 4th… I’m confused. Seemed very unfair to the Braves. Anyways..the strikeout of Sanchez for the third out was very gritty.

The Amazin Mets with a three game shutout of the Phillies… AMAZING!!!

You know what I find to be very interesting about the Phils? On May 12, they were 20-12 and striking fear in every pitcher in the National League. Since that date, which just happens to be the date it was reported that their bullpen coach was busted with binoculars in the bullpen, they are 6-8 and their offense has gone ice cold.

Connection or coincidence? Hard to say, but it sure looks, walks and quacks like a duck to me…

He says he used them to “evaluate his catcher”. I guess that’s why Shane Victorino was seen on the bullpen phone in the Phils’ dugout prior to an at bat – just checking on how his catcher was doing. Right…

And don’t most people evaluate someone behind home plate from behind the outfield fence? I know I do.

Y’all be pulling for my Alma Mater the Troy University Trojans as they play Florida International for the Sun Belt Championship tomorrow at 11am ET. FIU has the kid Garrett Wittels who has a 53 game hit streak intact. Should be on TV tomorrow and ESPN will be checking in to track the hitting streak. He is currently five games behind the record holder Robin Ventura. Ventura was a pretty good hitter for a number of years but is best remembered for charging Nolan Ryan and getting in a headlock and being pummeled by the legend.

Should be a really interesting game. Troy’s problem, like all college baseball tournament teams, is having enough pitching to play the crazy double elimination tourney.

GO TROJANS!!! (Oh yeah… nice game Braves!)

Well, now there have been 20 in the history of the game, 2 in about 3 weeks! Amazing!
And did you all hear about the Angels Kendry Morales??? Hit a game winning grand slam yesterday, and when He came around to jump on home plate, he came down on an angle and broke his leg! Out 2 months at least. Man, to go from being ecstatic, to needing surgery in the matter of seconds.

    Oh, and go Trojans! 🙂

Thanks ber… but the Trojans ran out of gas (and pitching) and lost 14-10. Disappointed but still very proud of the resiliency they showed during the tourney. Unlikely that they’ll get an invite to the NCAA’s but there is a chance.

KK pitching very nicely for the Bravos. Nice to get a couple of runs early but we need to pile on a few more.

Speaking of piling on… ya think there might be some clubhouse discussions about celebrations at homeplate? I hate to think about J-Hey hitting another game winner and coming out of the dogpile with something broken. Would not be good!

Several years ago, there was a pitcher for the Phillies who was something like 1 and 15. The consensus was you had to be a pretty good pitcher to have that kind of record and still be in the major leagues.

So it seems with KK. After a while you just forget about the won/loss record and just enjoy the show. Kershin showed why he is still a good addition to the rotation. Offense was lacking a bit.

And Joe Simpson made reference to the coinciding of the Philles getting busted for stealing signs from the pen and the sudden drop in run production. Was just saying….

…yes. Going. And to where it does not matter, as long as he’s gone.

Actually, I need to just let that go. He plays an above average CF, which is exactly why he stays in the lineup. In fact, if he can keep sucking at the plate until July or so, we can call Schafer up and he’ll only have to hit .225 or so to be a vast improvement. No pressure there.

What is maddening is that I am 900 miles away and I can see the problem. Long swing and trying to pull everything. DUH!!!!

Nate has zero trade value right now. Hey, I won’t lie and say I saw this coming. I thought Frank Wren had made a pretty shrewd trade getting Nate for Morton and a box of balls. When you are stuck with paying him no matter what, I guess you may as well try to get your money’s worth and hope he can play through it.

As long as the team is winning, you can cover up a mistake like Nate. Best protection a player can have is a major league contract.

Now, that said, if the Nator can just get a glimmer of his potential back and start to come around like Yunel has then we can all make a date to meet at Turner Field for the World Series this fall.

And how about Armando Galarraga of the Tigers being ONE out away from the 3rd Perfect game this year…and ump Jim Joyce blew a seemingly easy call at first and giving a hit to a Cleveland player who was out by half a step. You almost have to wonder if he didn’t know the kid had a Perfect game on the line.
It made me so mad when I first heard it, but the Ump is really upset, and had the…guts to apologize to the pitcher, who was very nice about it….so perhaps some good will come out of a very bad call. Might also get instant replays on plays like that too…which isn’t cool, but the umps have really brought it on themselves this year.

How mad would I be right now if that happened to one of our guys. We’ve all seen bad calls this year but to make one with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th of a perfect game. WOW!!!

I think the commissioner should step in and overturn the call. I don’t even know if he can do it, but it should be done. This is a wrong that should be made right. This is a very special case and I can’t think of another scenario where I would even recommend a call being overturned. Pandora’s box? Jones could miss time with finger injury
3:06 pm June 2, 2010, by Chris Vivlamore

Chipper Jones left Wednesday’s series-finale against the Phillies with inflammation in his right ring finger and it could be several days before he returns to the lineup.

Although the third baseman is listed as day-to-day, he said it could be several days before he is able to play.

“[The] finger is taking the brunt of a lot of swings over the years,” Jones said. “It’s sore right now. It’s probably going to be a couple of days before some of the soreness subsides. If I’m still having pain after that, I’ll probably have to get a [cortisone] shot.”

Jones said he informed manager Bobby Cox that he was having an issue with his finger during the Pirates’ series. He hoped the pain would go away but it has gotten worse and is now affecting the knuckle.

X-rays taken of the finger were negative.

“It’s not the bone I’m worried about, it’s the ligaments and tendons,” Jones said.

Jones said the pain is worse when he bats left-handed, as he did against Phillies’ right-hander Kyle Kendrick Wednesday. He went 0-for-2, grounding into a double play in the first inning and striking out in the fourth inning. Jones said he was essentially swinging the bat using three fingers on his right hand.

He was replaced at the start of the fifth inning by Omar Infante, who drove in the game-winning run in the eighth.

“Fortunately for us, my timing is impeccable and Omar Infante put on a show,” Jones said.

The Braves begin a four-game series against the Dodgers Thursday. They face one left-hander, Clayton Kershaw, in Friday’s game. Jones said he would see how his finger feels in Los Angeles, but hoped to be able to play when he could bat right-handed.

“It’s very painful left-handed, not as painful right handed,” Jones said. “… We have one lefty throwing against us. That might be when I get back in there.”

If a cortisone shot is required, that could cost Jones several more games.

Before Wednesday’s game, Jones hit .375 (6-for-16) on the past five games.

missed another game….had company over, and we watched a movie. I seem to really have a good record on this 9 game winning streak. Think I have seen about 18 innings total. All those losses early in the year??? Caught every second of them. 🙄
Glaus is really, really hot, isn’t he??? Well, the ladies would know better than I would! 😛

And I was wondering if he was going to be released or put into a pinch hitting roll, with Hinske doing the lions share of covering 1st base.

I was so glad that the Braves passed on Corey Hart. He had about as bad a swing as anyone, ever, last year.
After a recent streak, he’s hitting .256 14 HR’s 35 RBI’s, with a much smaller hole in his swing now…you just never know. As with Andruw(who is cooling off a bit)

I think if nothing else, Meds has certainly made his case to stay in the rotation. He easily could have finished the 8th inning if not for an error and a questionable ball/strike call. It was a masterful performance and a showcase of his exceptional change-up, the pitch that guided both Glavine and Maddox to HOF careers. Joe said it more than once, “They know it’s coming, and still can’t hit it.” That’s impressive, folks.

Now… as for Moylan. 2 appearances in a row that were far less impressive. He doesn’t look right to me. He’s throwing way too many fat pitches that aren’t diving the way his pitches normally do. Write it down: he’ll go on the DL for something in the next few days and Resop will get the call. Timing is everything.

Now, as for the offense… don’t change a thing! OK, make a little change when Chipper is healthy, but the lineup works. I think it is very interesting that Bobby keeps batting Glaus 5th, but I understand why, and it’s working. They are surely a fun team to watch right now. Even McOut got an important run producing double. And it is really fun to see the swagger they are carrying. Just like old times…

Fun stuff I received from my brother:

    Information about Gonorrhea Lectim

The Centers for Disease Control has issued a warning about a new virulent strain of this old disease. The disease is called Gonorrhea Lectim. It’s pronounced “Gonna re-elect ’em,” and it is a terrible obamanation.

The disease is contracted through dangerous and high risk behavior involving putting your cranium up your rectum. Many victims contracted it in 2008…but now most people, after having been infected for the past 1-2 years, are starting to realize how destructive this sickness is.

It’s sad because Gonorrhea Lectim is easily cured with a new drug just coming on the market called Votemout. You take the first dose in 2010 and the second dose in 2012 and simply don’t engage in such behavior again; otherwise, it could become permanent and eventually wipe out all life as we know it.

Several states are already on top of this, like Virginia and New Jersey, and apparently now Massachusetts, with many more seeing the writing on the wall.

Please pass this important message on to all those bright folk you really care about.

Greetings folks, back from our little mini vacation. Twas a nice break from the hustle and bustle of retirement. hey, don’t laugh, I hardly have time to get all the things I think I need to do done…

Went fishing on Wednesday and did okay. Only kept the really large fish as the more the you keep, the more you have to clean. I think Josie and I have come to the conclusion that our boat is just too big for us to put in and out easily. And just not all that well designed for fishing.

Anyway, got to see Tuesday night’s game via ESPN but was unable to watch Wed or Thursday. Caught glimpses via ESPN but one might as well read the box score for all the detail they give.

Yes, it was bad that Jim Joyce missed that call but being a Braves’ fan, I an use to more than our share being blown. Like the time Dave Justice was called out for not tagging third when the replay showed he did or when Ron Gant was physically lifted off the bag and called out in the ’91 series. Umps miss calls all the time, it is the surprise element of the game. Like some strike zones we see.

Thought it was real up front by GM to give Armando Galarraga the Corvette for his pseudo perfect game. Uh, does that come out of the tax payers’ pocket or is that all on GM? Just wondering.

yep, great time to be a Braves fan for sure.

Kershin did not appear all that sharp but did continue to be snake bit. At what point do you start to think a guy is not going to get it turned around? KK is not really that bad a pitcher, just not all that great. I know just looking at a guy’s won/loss record can be deceiving but 0-8? Who is kidding whom?

I thought Venters was excellent yet again but I told Josie that when Jesse was brought in the game was over. Dang, I hate being right sometimes….

Now, I don’t know if Jesse was calling his own pitches or Brian called for two sliders in a row but I did see it coming. Hey, maybe Bobby was just giving him the opportunity to fail. Still have Resop they need to do something with in AAA soon. I can’t see where the guy they picked up off the scrap heap from the Marlins was all that impressive either.

Folks, it’s not as if I want these guys to do poorly to give someone else a chance, it’s just that I hate to be saddled with a couple of 4 A pitchers when there are guys who can put up better numbers in the organization already.

    Draft starts tonight…

Braves have no 1st rounder this year, but do have four picks in the top three rounds with #35 in the supplemental round tonight, and #53 & #70 in the 2nd round and #101 in the 3rd round tomorrow. There are 50 rounds total, which end on Wednesday.

From what I’ve read, there are only 4 or 5 real impact guys, then it drops off dramatically. One draft guru says that depending on how teams assess some of the players, and draft according to need, #35 to the Braves could still net a player that could go 6-10 to another. Weird.

Here’s the really good news, though. Having signed the Dominican SS Edward Salcedo earlier this year, (remember this?), the Braves feel like they already have their “1st rounder”. He’s finishing up in the Dominican Summer League and should be in the Braves’ minor league system in late June/early July, most likely in low-A Rome. He’s only 18 (supposedly confirmed), but is already 6’3″/190 and “big league strong”. He has a nice right-handed power stroke. Unless he hits some wall in his development, he could be a fast mover through the system. I could easily see him moved to 3B and groomed as Chipper’s long term replacement.

Kudos to the Braves’ scouting dept. once again… and the draft hasn’t even started yet!

Baseball might be played for 6 months but baseball operations are year round. The Braves have a pretty extensive Asian scouting department too. Peter Moylan was being watched for a long time before the Braves signed him after the WBC from what I’ve read.

I think Escobar would be a good fit at third base but then most of the time teams are looking to fill that spot with a power bat. Shortstop seems to be the most difficult infield position to play or I should say the one which requires the most athleticism.

    TP in the ajc:

Jason Heyward won’t use it as an excuse, but hitting coach Terry Pendleton said the rookie slugger’s nagging thumb injury is causing him problems.

He went 2-for-17 with six strikeouts in the four-game series against the Dodgers, including strikeouts to end the ninth and 11th innings – both times with a runner on base – in Sunday’s 5-4 loss.

Heyward tied a major league record by striking out five times in a nine-inning game Friday, including the final out of the 5-4 loss.

“He’s not going to mention it, but he’s struggling with that left thumb,” Pendleton said Sunday morning. “It’s bugging him. He can’t get to a certain point in his swing that he wants to get to without it [hurting].”

Heyward injured the thumb on May 14 when he caught it on the base while sliding head-first. He was scratched from the lineup May 23 at Pittsburgh after it swelled during the game the night before.

Pendleton thinks it could be an injury that’s nagging through the rest of the season, and doesn’t believe resting Heyward for a brief period would help. He thinks it’ll be in the offseason before it completely heals.

    Well, that sucks! 😦

Found this via Mlbtraderumors, on a site questioning signings made by teams.

Atlanta Braves select Mike Minor, lhp, Vanderbilt (Seventh Overall)
We wondered why he went before: Mike Leake, Aaron Crow, Alex White.

Considered the most egregious of the three 2009 surprises, I think this quote from Kevin Goldstein managed to put a finger on the complaints behind the pick: “It’s a horrible pick FOR ME, but I think early picks should be all about upside. Minor has a better shot of reaching [the] big leagues than anyone other than Strasburg in this thing, but his ceiling is a fourth starter.” But I suppose it’s only fitting that last year’s weirdest selection is this year’s biggest enigma. Minor seems a different pitcher in the Braves organization than he was in college, then lauded for his command and pitchability. Now, he’s among the minor league leaders with 91 strikeouts in 63.2 innings, but he’s been walking people, with 28 free passes handed out. Apparently, the Braves were keen on Minor’s development of his third pitch (curveball), and believed his change-up would play better in pro ball. Now, it just seems foolish we ever questioned the Braves fantastic scouting department.

    😆

Though, Mike Leake is 5-0 with a 2.22 ERA, which would make him the best starter on our team. But, I doubt he would have made the rotation out of spring training.
Who would guess he could be that good straight out of college??? Hey may be the next Greg Maddux. Only I think Greg had a better fastball at 22!

I especially like the sentence: Now, it just seems foolish we ever questioned the Braves fantastic scouting department.

I have to say, alot of folks flat out *****ed and moaned after that pick last year. But honestly, my sentiment was simply that those guys in charge know a whole lot more than I do. And they don’t miss very often. It’s good to see them vindicated after taking so much vitriol from the online gripe community.

As to Leake, well…. give credit where credit is due. But I’ll wait until he does it again in his 2nd season before I start thinking about future greatness. Can you say, “Dontrelle”? And let’s face it… he faces Houston, Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Louis in that division. They aren’t exactly the Monsters of the Midway. They have Pujols – having his worst start in the Majors – and Braun. Even Fielder isn’t exactly putting up All Star numbers. Put him in the NL East, (or should it be NL Feast?), and things might be a little different. That is, unless his turn just happened to come up against the Mets every time. 😀

Braves draft info, courtesy of Carroll Rogers of the ajc:

What they [Braves] got with their first pick was Matt Lipka, a speedy shortstop out of McKinney (Texas) High School, a two-sport star, and someone they see as a quality person.

Braves scouting director Tony DeMacio said the Braves graded Lipka’s speed at 80 on a scale to 80. He’s been clocked at 6.4 in the 60-yard dash. He’s a projected leadoff-type hitter, whom they see at either shortstop or perhaps center field on down the line.

“He’s got a plus arm, he’s a plus fielder, and he’s got makeup off the chart,” DeMacio said.

And by makeup, he means: “He’s a kid who is going to show up for you every single day,” DeMacio said. “He’s going to make everybody else better around him. He’s a winning-type guy. He’s just a great young man.”

Baseball America ranked Lipka, who is 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, the third-fastest high school player in the draft. He went 15-for-15 in stolen bases his senior year, while hitting .411 (39-for-95) with 11 doubles, eight triples and a .588 on-base percentage in 30 games. He showed that speed in high school football as well. He’s a two-time All-State wide receiver, who caught 22 touchdowns as a senior last fall and also returned two kickoffs for touchdowns.

    OK… I have to call myself out…

Yesterday I talked a little about Edward Salcedo, the Dominican SS we signed earlier this year who kind of tajkes the place of this year’s lost 1st round pick. In my blurb I said, “He’s finishing up in the Dominican Summer League and should be in the Braves’ minor league system in late June/early July, most likely in low-A Rome.”

Well, he is still in the Dominican, but already in the Braves’ system on the Braves Dominican Summer League team. In 6 games so far, he is apparently “showing a little rust” by batting only .294, but has taken 8 walks in those 6 games and has 3 stolen bases. He’s someone to keep an eye on for sure…

  104. 105 Voice of Raisins June 8, 2010 at 9:29 am

    Here’s the skinny on Salcedo:

He is having visa issues. (Big surprise there, right?) Until those issues are cleared up, he’ll remain on the Braves Dominican Summer League team. Once he can return to the US, he’ll either be assigned to low-A Rome or high-A Myrtle Beach. He is currently ranked as the organization’s #5 prospect behind Heyward(huh?), Freddie Free, Julio Teheran (who is tearing up high-A after being promoted after just 2 starts in low-A) and Arodys Vizcaino, the real trade return from Javy Vasquez. So really, he is the #4 prospect.

By the way, lefty Mike Dunn, the “other guy” in the Vasquez deal, is dominating in AAA. In 26.2 innings, he has an ERA of 0.67 with 36 K’s. Yowser! 😯

Sorry for being AWOL guys but… but, you know the deal. Life calls and that kind of stuff. Been so tired lately I’ve been unable to watch the final innings the last couple of nights. West coast baseball can be a such a pain sometimes.

Please pray for my friend of many years Hugh and his wife Lisa. They found out yesterday that their son Branden was killed in Afghanistan. He was on patrol when their squad happened upon an IED. Their unit is part of the 82nd Airborne and was due to return home in a couple of weeks. Very tragic that we lose our sons and daughters in that hell hole. It was very hard to visit their house this afternoon but their house was filled with friends and relatives.

Strasburg had 14 K’s in 7 innings, not bad, aye? Just what we need in our division… huh?

Wildcat… tell your friends we are praying for them. It saddens me to hear when any of our brave soldiers are harmed. I also pray that he did not die in vain.

Now baseball… Medlen gave us a scare last night. I hope BMac sees that you are supposed to block the plate when taking the throw home. Another quirk in his game that befuddles me. It was one of the first things I learned…

Yes, most nights it is nearly 2 AM before you can get to sleep. Was worth it last night however, tight game.

I watched Strasberg pitch a bit last night too before the start of the Braves game. Scary good this one is. Looks like Atlanta will get to see him up close and personal on the 30th of June. Nationals just got a lot better. Like I’ve said, they can generate some offense, needed pitching to hold down the other team. Looks like they are working to that end.

Good to see the Braves gut out that win last night. They appear to be a team on a mission. That’s the kind of team I can really get behind. And Meds is the man, ain’t he? I love to see a pitcher play hard on and off the mound. It’s why the National League will ALWAYS be better to me.

I had some harsh things to say about Chipper yesterday, and I still stand by those comments, but I feel I should add something to it…

Chipper has never been a “rah-rah” kind of leader. He isn’t all loud and overbearing. But he has a presence. And he does provide a certain amount of necessary leadership to what is becoming a pretty young team. And while it is tough to watch him go 1-6, and not look at all like the Chipper that should one day find a spot in the HOF, he is still a valuable member of the team.

I kept falling asleep during the game, managed to wake up just in time to see Moylan lose control and the “collision” take place in right center. Anyone else remember McLouth’s statement in spring training about how he hoped Jason was loud because he did not want to get run over by him in the outfield?

Still, it was a pretty good take down.

Question, how can the Braves look so good one night at the plate and so inept the next?

On Stasberg and the unbelievable hype (okay, coming out of Washington it’s all unbelievable hype) here on what he means to the Washington franchise. I don’t mind the Braves having to face him as long as he also pitches against the rest of the division. Somebody has to beat the other guys along the way for your team to have a shot.

Final thoughts… Will the Braves leave Phoenix two players short? Baseball is not supposed to be a full contact sport…

V, I just checked, Moylan has pitched 5, of the last 7 days. I am sure in Bobby’s mind, he hasn’t pitched full innings some day, so he should be just swell, but you really need to rest an arm from breaking the capillaries night after night. Ice alone doesn’t do it.

Cristhian Martinez has pitched twice in what, 14 days??? If he scares Bobby, bring someone else up, like the guy V mentioned was tearing it up in AAA (just went back up, Mike Dunn, a lefty…can’t have 3 of them?)

And are we just going to let Resop go elsewhere without bringing him up for a start, or to relieve ??? Hope he will stay in AAA longer than his agreement of June 15th???

Can’t hang this game on the pitching. As easy as it is to blame Bobby every time the bullpen gives up a run, the fact is that the offense did NOTHING in this game. They wasted opportunity after opportunity and gave the pen exactly 1 run to work with. Which is exactly 1 run more than they gave KK. It’s inexcusable.

    Examples:

1st inning – HeyHey walks with 1 out, Chipper grounds meekly to the stinkin’ pitcher for an easy double play. Fail!

2nd inning – Bases loaded and 1 out. Up strolls McLouth who promptly strikes out (again) leaving KK as his own only hope to generate a run. He is paid to pitch, not to hit. Fail!

4th inning – McLouth comes to the plate again with a runner in scoring position, this time with 2 outs. Fail!

7th inning – Braves manage to get Yunel to 3B on a single by Omar (who batted for KK) with 2 outs. The Braves leading hitter, who showed no patience at the plate all night, can’t get the run across, leaving KK again with no chance for a W. Fail!

8th inning – Braves get a leadoff double from their 20 year old, and actually get him home… then can’t do anything else.

9th inning – Braves get a leadoff walk against Chad Flippin’ Qualls and his gi-normous ERA, and can’t move him to 2B. He accomplishes the feat himself with a stolen base, but it matters not as they can’t advance him any further. Fail!

The bullpen gives up 2 runs as the result of a fly ball collision in right center. No way that should have cost the Braves this game.

I watched this game from 1 thru 9 and squirmed the whole time. It was NOT a fun game to watch. I honestly knew when the National League’s “most patient” team watched its leadoff guy swing at the first pitch of the game and fly out weakly to LF that it was going to be one of those nights.

    It was.

There was one positive thing to come from the game last night; Bobby has already announced that he will hold Nate out of tonight’s game.

Bobby’s patience with struggling players in legendary. I can appreciate that with young players – like when KJ started his career 0-22, or sticking with Schafer (when nobody knew he was injured). But Nate is a veteran. The only thing he should be “trying to find” is his hotel key.

OK, you can make the argument that he is in the lineup to provide defense. I’ll buy that. I even get that. But if you just want defense, and don’t care about getting any offensive production there, go ahead and bring up Schafer and let him develop. My money says he’ll hit better than .180.

What about Melky, you ask? Hasn’t he been hitting the ball better? Yes, he has. But with Hinske starting, you can’t rob your bench of every bat, and Melky is a switch hitter that can be pretty valuable late in the game. He is actually an ideal 4th outfielder who plays all 3 spots and hits from both sides. He isn’t an every day Major League player. Period.

Frank has shown over the last 2 years that he isn’t shy about addressing needs. Something will break in CF pretty soon, either internally or externally, and LF will basically become a Hinske/Melky platoon. Bank on it. I see it coming…

Actually, I believe they want to address it internally. If Schafer was hitting anywhere above .250, he’d probably already be here. Every time he’s mentioned by Bobby or Frank, it is in a context of “getting ready”. That .212 average he’s sporting at the moment doesn’t help convince anyone he’s ready.

No, I don’t see them going outside the organization and making a big splash. They could bring in some smaller ripple kind of guy, though. Maybe a David DeJesus from KC? Who knows…

    Anticipating Chris Resop’s Next Team
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [June 11 at 1:15pm CST]

Chris Resop should be in the major leagues before long, it’s just a question of where. The right-hander has pitched to a 1.84 ERA in 13 Triple A starts this year, striking out more than a batter per inning, and he has a clause in his contract that forces the Braves to expose him to the 29 other clubs if he’s not on Atlanta’s 25-man roster by June 15th.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports that the trade market has yet to develop for Resop, who pitched a one-hitter last night. MLB.com’s Mark Bowman agrees and notes that no MLB scouts watched Resop last night. Morosi reports that the Braves will trade Resop if they see a good offer, but they’ll promote him if they don’t see a proposal they like. Resop could replace struggling reliever Jesse Chavez in the team’s bullpen.

It’s hard to pinpoint Resop’s value, but as Dave Cameron of FanGraphs points out, pitchers with 9.9 K/9 with ground ball rates approaching 50% open some eyes. Plus, since he doesn’t have much big league experience, Resop would be more than a rental. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Cardinals, Blue Jays, Tigers or Mets pursue the 27-year-old.

Does playing the Twins anger anyone else here? Losing a low scoring well pitched game to these guys ticks me off! Poor fielding, base running, umpiring are the usual culprits. Tonight it was unexplainable bad fielding. Totally unacceptable for a team with championship hopes. Geeeeeezzzz!!!

Hummm, seems the Bravos have finally struck a nerve with the Wildcat… Yes, what a heartbreaking way to lose a game. Just as an aside, didn’t Mike Schmidt retire mid season from the Phillies when he realize he could no longer see/react to ground balls while playing third? Prado, well, he is allowed a couple of those a year, Chipper however has already had his full quota… Let Chipper DH if Bobby thinks he is needed in the line-up and let Brooks “Dirt” Conrad play third.

Hope Infante’ is not too banged up by that foul ball off his foot… This team is becoming digitally challenged.

And one has to wonder who Resop peeved off not to get called up before now.

We had a friend over, so I just had the tv on in the background, muted. I knew Liriano was pitching well,(But seeing “highlights” on baseball tonight, don’t know why they were swinging at balls that hit the dirt) but didn’t know about the poor defense. Twins typically play great defense. The one ball I saw Chipper hit well, Span ran down…
I heard on Baseball Tonight a few weeks ago that they do TONS of infield practice before games. The Twins are first and foremost a fundamentally sound team.
They try harder, since in the past, they didn’t have much of a budget to work with.
Gil, the only reason I can figure Resop isn’t up is he walked a fair number of folks in 2008. in 18 innings, 10 walks, 5.89 ERA.
    Jesse Chavez 23 1/3 innings, 8 walks, 7.33 ERA.
Resop sticks in my head cuz he was throwing 100 MPH and there were times he’d go 10-12 days between games, while other guys arms were about to fall off. Sorta like what happened with Cristhian Martinez after his first game here.
Ol’ Bobby has all the patience in the world withe Frenchy’s and Andruw’s of the world swinging at strike 3 2 feet outside, night, after night, after night, after night. But, a pitcher that walks a guy??? that gets you on the list, and little chance of getting off.

I’d love to see him resting Prado’s hand, or Chipper at third at least of the them a week. Of course, Infante is so good as well…I think Bobby will switch the DH to give guys a day off from the Field. Chipper will get one, who will get the other day?

cat, maybe we’ll end up with four 16-team super-conferences and 4 mid-level conferences from which an eight team playoff will arise. That’s the only way to keep the regular season records still as important, with that being the basis of reaching the respective conference title games. The super-conference winners would then be matched to play the mid-level conference winners to advance to the “final four” of football, the college equivalent to the NFC/AFC title games.

    Or not… who knows?

Give Meds a nice lead early and he attack the plate and mow down an opponent. With that devastating change-up off a low-90’s fastball, combined with a “keep ’em honest” curve, he can attack the plate with ferocity. I really like him.

Very well played game by the Braves, got to love it when a plan comes together. Question, how do you send Medlen back to the pen after his performance in place of JJ?

I think all of the Atlanta pitchers liked Target Field. So, what do we do tomorrow? I may go into withdrawal….

Still, it was a very solid road trip for the Braves. It is not just the fact they had a winning trip but who the had to beat to do it. Splitting with the Dodgers is something no one else has done recently and taking a series from the Twins in their home park is not a feat done often either.

Really, looked to be a team win today with everyone making some type of contribution.

Wildcat, my dad was watching that game yesterday (Red Sox are his other team) & saw Nava’s grand slam. He was a guy who never was drafted out of high school or college & playing in independant ball when the Sox picked him up. I imagine he was just supposed to fill out a minor league roster & never make it to the bigs. And he hits a GS on the first major league pitch he evers sees. Stuff like that is why I love this game.

Well, my friends, I’ve just returned from Davis Nursing Home. I was called a little after 1:00 am, made a fast dash there and was able to spend my mother’s last hour with her. She had no awareness but I hope that on some level she knew that her son, daughter and granddaughter were with her to the last. She took her last breath at 2:17. No longer in the pain that has plagued her for so many years and finally at peace.

2 Corinthians1:3-4 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. A never ending source…

Jeremiah 31:13b I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them joy instead of sorrow. It’s true…

Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. He never fails there…

Psalm 30:5b Weeping may remain for a night, but rejoicing comes in the morning. This is a personal favorite of mine. There is a song built around it called “Your Love Never Fails” by Jesus Culture. If you get a chance in the next few days, look up the song on YouTube. God’s love never fails…

    From MLBTR:

A source tells NBCSports.com’s Craig Calcattera that the Astros and Rangers are “getting close” to having a Roy Oswalt deal in place. It’s not clear who Houston would receive in the deal, but the package of players is more or less agreed too.

However, Texas’ financial situation is the sticking point, as the Rangers are trying to convince MLB to allow them to take on the roughly $27MM left on Oswalt’s deal.

This is significant because the Mutts have expressed interest and Oswalt has stated he’d waive his NTC to go to NYM. I think the AL West would be perfect for him. Perfect.

Oh, and lost inthe shuffle, courtesy of Carroll Rogers at the ajc:

The Braves have recalled right-hander Chris Resop from Triple-A Gwinnett, facing a Tuesday deadline to either put him on the major league roster, trade him or allow other teams a 72-hour window to sign him.

Resop’s agent B.B. Abbott said Resop was notified on Tuesday morning and will be in uniform with the Braves for their opener against the Rays Tuesday night.

The Braves have not announced an impending move, but it will likely be either Craig Kimbrel or Jesse Chavez going down to Gwinnett.

No surprise. And as much as Chavez has sucked, Kimbrel needs regular work to continue his development. Then again maybe his load increases if Chavez goes. We’ll see, I suppose…

And the mid-summer trade season is officially open. The A’s just picked up Conor Jackson. In light of the Chipper revelation, Jackson might have looked good in LF for us, freeing Hinske to slide in at 3B.

To compensate for the lack of outfielders in Gwinnett, the Braves have signed Josh Anderson to a Minor League deal. Anderson hit .294 with three homers in the 40 games he played for Atlanta in 2008. The speedy outfielder has spent the past two years within the Tigers and Royals organizations.

Understatement of the century. The city leaders have long been shortsighted in EVERY thing that they do. They are far more interested in pandering to the voting masses than actual progress. It’s one reason that the city is a haven for every public assistance program in existence. It’s a minor miracle that the stadium itself remains in the city proper. It rightfully should have been moved northward years ago, and probably would have had the Olympics not essentially given them a free ballpark.

I tried to stay awake for this one but I got off the left coast schedule last week. Maybe the Rays hit themselves out tonight and will be arm weary against Tommy tomorrow…

Reading the box scores, looks like Resop did not have a very triumphant return either. A lot different facing minor league hitters than facing the Rays. Did not exactly boost his value. I suspect it would cost the Braves dearly to get another team to take KK and Resop off their hands.

hey, got to give credit where its due however to the Rays, that is a pretty nice club they’ve got over there. I saw quite a bit of their AAA club, Durham, when the Braves were in Richmond. They have a deep farm system.

And at what point does everyone figure it might be Lou Pinnella that’s was the problem? Looks like the Rays got a lot better after he left for Chicago. Cubbies have not looked so hot even with a very large payroll…

Soooooo…. Does KK get the opportunity to set the bar really high by going 0-10 or does Bobby do everyone a favor and keep Meds in the rotation when JJ comes back?

OK… since there is little talk going on here, I am going to stir the pot in a big way. (Please note that I neither advocate nor dismiss any of the following ideas. I am only tossing them out for general discussion.)

#1. It is readily apparent that Chipper’s immense talents have eroded, and that he is no longer the middle of the order big bat that a championship caliber team has to have. So, given that, do you trade for an established young ML 3B (such as Milwaukee’s Casey McGehee), or do you trade for a bona fide AAA 3B prospect (such as Milwaukee’s Mat Gamel)?

#2. Do you start Eric Hinske taking grounders at 3B, where he has played most of his career, and search for that ever elusive everyday LF?

#3. Would you go for a mid-level kind of deal, like for Andy LaRoche? He will lose his starting job this week to Pitt’s latest up-and-coming prospect. He’d cost something, but not as much as McGehee or Gamel.

#4. What about KJ redo? All indications are that Ari will try to trade him while his value is high, and he is certainly having the kind of season that would help the Braves immensely. You could put him back at 2B, move Prado to 3B, and bat them 1-2 with JHey sliding down to 3. With Mac and Beast at 4-5, you’d have a heckuva top/middle of the lineup. And with Hinske/Melky at 6 and Yunel at 7, you’re as good as anybody 1-7. (CF is another question for another post.)

#5. And if you decide to make any kind of trade, who do you dangle as trade bait? (Here’s where the slings and arrows will begin to fly my direction…) Since you have 6 starters once JJ returns, do you use one of those guys? Let’s explore that, shall we? First, the contracts of both DLowe and KK make them untradeable. Huddy is the staff ace, and will likely finish his career here. THanson is the present and future of the staff. Meds is a young’un, with little payroll effect and a ton of potential. Who did I leave out… uh, JJ? Yep, JJ. Close to Cy Young last year, mostly hurt this year. He still has a manageable contract, but not for much longer. And he is represented by one Scott Boras. Wonder what he would fetch at the trade deadline if he has a couple of good starts between now and then to prove his health? Probably the needed bat plus a prospect… just sayin’.

Here’s the thing – if you want to win this year, in Bobby’s (and likely Chipper’s) last season, you have to make bold moves to get the final pieces to the puzzle. This team is incomplete. Frank can either be a risk taker, a caretaker or an undertaker. I don’t want to finish 2nd or 3rd again this year. I want to send Bobby and Chipper out on top.

    What say you?

  203. 206 Gil in Mechanicsville June 16, 2010 at 3:13 pm

I think Chipper showed last night what a rested and healthy Chipper Jones is capable of.

As for who/what you trade for (third base, outfielder) depends on who and what is available. While I liked KJ, I’m not sure Atlanta is a good fit for him. I know Bobby liked him but he has been soooo streaky.

To be honest, I think a week off would do Jason Heyward a world of good. Problem, too many outfielders hurt right now so no one else to take his spot. If McLouth was hitting anywhere near his potential, J-Hey could have a few well needed days off.

I doubt the Braves will trade anyone right now. The guys who have value are contributing to the Braves, those who are not, no one else wants either.

Answer, If you want quality, you have to give quality. Either in players or money. Glaus was a freak of nature. Braves got lucky…

So, if you want a quality bat, are you willing to give up a guy like Venters? Do you trade Medlen and move Venters into his spot?

Is there something physically wrong with Moylan to case him to be off right now or just glitch?

Takes a full quiver to last 162 games. Once in the playoff, you just need to be able to stand the cold…

Glaus will be 34 next year, and all these experts seem to think you are not worth even a 2 year contract at that age. Pitchers seem to have a better chance than hitters of getting a multi year contract.

“What started out as a conversation about my future with the Atlanta Braves that should have been kept quiet, apparently leaked out. That’s unfortunate, for the circus that has ensued since then. So I apologize for that.

“I think it’s best that we concentrate on what we need to concentrate on, and that is the fact that this team is in first place, that we are trying to get into the playoffs. Any more talk of the ‘R’ word – retirement — will be reserved until the end of the season. Let’s let Bobby have his just due, let him get the attention that he deserves.

“Honestly, I have not made a decision either way. Let’s face it, we all know sort of which way I’m leaning, but I think it’s best that we put this all behind us. Somehow the cork got taken out. Well I’m putting it back in right now. So I’m not … I don’t want to hear any more talk about retirement until the end of the season. Once I get a chance to speak at length with my support group at the end of the season, then I’ll make a decision, and I’m sure you guys will be the first to know. I would be willing to bet my last nickel that Chipper was (and is) planning on retiring at season’s end, and planned to meet with the brass to let ’em know because it has a direct effect on how they may approach this year’s trade deadline. Also, he had no desire for that to become public. Then it did, and now he’s in full retreat so as not to take away from Bobby’s last year and the team’s pursuit of the playoffs.

I just believe it. The mountain is still there, and the molehill is just a facade. At least that’s how I see it.

Just think we get T.Saito back sometime this weekend. Matt Diaz is getting clearance to start swing the bat and Infante should be available soon.

Still some questions. What to do with centerfield? Does F.Wren trade some of our depth in pitching for help in the outfield? What can we expect from Chipper in his possible last season? What to do with KK? What’s up with the Amazins and the Philthies?

    This should be fun!

So, Mets win seven in a row and manage to pick up 1 game on the Braves. Phillies still 4 back. Mets will fade a bit when they start facing tougher opponents. Got to love a race though. What makes it interesting.

So, who will the Marlins put up on the block that can help the Braves? Cantu?

Good morning all, another day, another series. Like Bobby says, they are all important.

Biggest question, will KK go 0-10 this weekend or finally turn it around? At some point you have to say no mas….

The guys on the MLB network say he is the best 0-9 pitcher they have ever seen. Maybe it’s because no one else is allowed to get to 0-9… Still, JJ should be back soon. Will he be the same guy we liked last year or will their be the drop off we noticed this spring? He was not all that sharp in his first rehab.

And wither Chipper? Braves seem to have been able to move on with him out of the line-up. Why on the bench? Still dinged?

Dirt found a way to contribute last night even if it was only a bunt. Melky should be getting lessons from him. Conrad sure knows how to lay one down.

I absolutely love the way the Braves are paling the game right now. Are they maddening on some nights? Well, I suppose that depends on your perspective. No team can win every night, so why get too upset when they have “one of those nights”? They are a fun team to watch on most nights.

cat, I wholeheartedly expect Frank to address the CF issue in some manner. It’s not his track record to sit by and idly watch when there is a glaring deficiency. Yep, the question is most likely what rather than will. And that is a really good question.

Who is available, and what price is Frank willing to pay?

And did anyone notice that the US soccer team played to another rousing tie? Yeah, me neither.

    Meh…

I have a hard time being excited about a tie. I have a hard time being excited about a sport that celebrates a tie. Seems wholly unnatural. And wuss-ish.

If they want to make the sport a little more exciting, here are a couple of suggestions:

    1) Make the field smaller, and take some of the players off the field. Good Lord, watching two teams scramble a mush of players together over the midfield without a sniff of the goal for most of 90 minutes is mind-numbing.

    2) Pad ’em up and let ’em get more physical. I might watch the games a little more if they had a lacrosse attitude.

    3) Do away with ties altogether. I say take half the players off and go into sudden death.

    4) For all that’s good and holy, count the stupid clock down instead of up! Who came up with that stupid idea, anyway? And when you figure in “injury time”, who has a clue when the game is going to end? Maybe it’s 90 minutes, maybe not. “We’ll just keep going for a little while longer…” I’ll tell ya, 90 minutes is about as long as I could take anyway. Injury time might be redefined as the time it takes the ref to get up if he doesn’t blow the stinkin’ whistle after a seemingly forever 90 minutes!

    5) Set the ball on fire. Now there’s some excitement! I’d watch that… even for 90 minutes.

V, as Americans, we just know that soccer isn’t exciting…no matter how much it’s hyped up, home much the rest of the world loves it…Soccer can’t replace or compete with Baseball, Football, etc…even sports I never watch, like Basketball and Hockey…I would watch anyday over soccer. I’ve tried…but geez…If folks in Europe could watch baseball on TV and in person, and someone explained the rules…if they saw home runs…surely they would realize soccer was a waste of time and energy. Surely! 😛

Hey, I thought soccer was pretty exciting when my kids played, like women’s basketball…

Actually, kids soccer is more exciting than the pros, heck of a lot more scoring.

The real question is going to be how much control Frank Wren is going to want to maintain over the day to day running of the team. Always tricky when you put two alpha males in the same space. Frank is going to want to exert himself more with a less senior guy in the mix. Just saying….

Jim Riggleman has done a nice job with the Nationals since taking over but to be fair to Acta, he has better players. Nats are still trying to recover from being gutted by the league when they had control and from Omar Minaya’s stint as GM while they were still the Expos.

The Rangers were fairly competitive in the AL West but the Kansas City Royals were the real deal. Otis, Patek, Brett, Mayberry, McRae, F.White, man they had some players. The Royals road uniforms bring back lots of memories. Of course they were more powder blue and were the old pull over type.

Her final resting place is in a beautiful light cream-colored, polished-granite mausoleum that has plenty of glass and is light and pleasant feeling. The central part of the mausoleum is plenty large enough to hold probably 100 people in 10 long pews. That’s where we had her service. Afterward, I was just looking around at the names on the plaques on the walls and something way up high caught my eye. It was an old Pittsburgh Pirates cap hanging from the cone-shaped brass flower holder that is beside each nameplate. None other than Pops himself: Willie Stargell. Mom would be tickled pink!

I love the resiliency of the Braves. Not a collection of individuals but really playing like a team. Prado and Glaus may be the stars to this point but in my mind Eric Hinske and Billy Wagner make this group extremely tough. Great game today again by the Braves. For Kershin, not so much… He can’t complain about lack of run support when you are handed a 4 run lead in the first inning. Just no life on his pitches, everything he threw up there was getting hammered. He was fortunate that some of those batted balls were at people.

Henski is the man… Great resurgence by Chipper too. Okay, so he won’t hit 30 homeruns this year but as long as he is driving in runs in clutch situations I’m okay with that.

Well, Chipper has discovered that the “long” swing was his undoing… Should he let McLouth know the secret? Long swing equals occasional homerun when the pitcher hits your bat at precisely the right speed but many outs. Short compact swing allows hitter to adjust to pitcher and equals fewer homeruns but much higher batting average. DUH….. Chicks may dig the long ball but they abhor strikeout artist… or in Scot Thorman’s case, big “whooshers”

Well, it’s Monday and no ballgame tonight, it’s too hot to really get much done. I took the John Deere to the shop to let them figure out why the electric PTO stopped working again. Mower runs fine but, well, you know….

Now, a guy who can only heave it up there at about 88 might have reason to want to move his pitches around but when you are hurling it at 97 mph with movement, you really do need to do a lot of other stuff. Maybe an occasional slider but not a lot of other stuff needs to be done.

Just one observation from last night’s game…

Boby is absolutely married to the idea of a Hinske/righty platoon in LF. OK, I won’t argue with a manager who has won 2100 games in my city. Hinske’s numbers look great this season, due in part to the fact that Bobby has done what he always does: he puts players in a position to succeed.

That said, a Hinske/Omar platoon is not the answer. Omar is best used as the super-sub. Not a platoon guy. For one thing, he doesn’t have the power you want from a corner OF. I like Hinske/Melky better, but to be honest, I don’t want Nate back out in CF until he finds himself. An extended rehab assignment to get over any “post-concussion” symptoms is perfect. (His “concussion” could not have come at a better time. Well, it could have come earlier, but I digress…)

So, given that Melky has begun to show a pulse, and plays a good defensive CF, should Frank concentrate his mid-season move(s) on a right-handed hitting compliment to Hinske? Should he focus on a full time LF? Should he focus elsewhere?

    What say ye?

How come Hanson was out there for 13 hits and 9 runs???

’cause he got knocked around early, and Bobby didn’t want to burn his whole bullpen on a game that slipped away early. Every team is guaranteed to win at least 60 games and to lose at least 60 games. Might as well not use up resources in one of those 60 losses.

    Here’s a crazy thought…

Would you look for someone dumping their closer, knowing that you will be without one following this season? Somebody like Matt Capps – although not necessarily Matt Capps because he is in your division, and Washington would ask alot in return? I know the ‘pen has been a strength, but can you imagine if we took on a closer for the 8th inning role the rest of this year, to go along with Wags, Saito, Moylan, Venters and O’Flaherty? Plus maybe KK as long man? Then you could rid yourself of both Chavez and Martinez. Just sayin’.

Raisins, you can never have too much power in the outfield.. Much like speed and pitching… Now, the questions is who , where and when for how much? Since I don’t do the fantasy thingee, I really don’t know who is availible for how long or how much. Maybe the Braves would be just as well off trading for a young guy who is stuck in AA or AAA although the likelihood of a team parting with a young stud is minimal. More likely they would trade a Granderson or similar player.

Washinton has Josh Willingham (again in our division) who would fill the bill quite nicely. I they they would part with him pretty quickly for some young pitching prospects.

Most of the older guys are looking for big money for a diminished skill set. Still, if you want a kid who can bookend Heyward, the Braves might just as well put a glove on his roommate and trot him out to left field.

Now Nate…. Tsk, Tsk… What are we to do with our wayward centerfielder? I still think a shock collar might be the best answer. That long swing of his is not working at the Ted… Not working anywhere else either come to think of it. Honestly, I think I would just a soon have Blanco filling his roster spot.

It looks like most of the “available” outfield bats are of the lefty variety. Not many righties that I can see. Luke Scott, David DeJesus, Jack Cust…

Now the one righty bat that comes to mind is Corey Hart, who is having a pretty darn good season. And he’s under team control until after the 2011 season. The thing there is, you’d be buying high. Yep, he’s having a career 1st half, and the Brewers have needs. They need pitching. But can you imagine putting Corey Hart and his 18 HR’s in LF to bat 5th behind Glaus? Or to bat 3rd behind HeyHey? Whew…

He’d cost you some arms, though. But if the Braves are serious about a World Series appearance in 2010, that’s the kind of move you have to make.

    Think about it:

    Marteeen, 2B (R)
    HeyHey, RF (L)
    Hart, LF (R)
    Mac, C (L)
    Beast, 1B (R)
    Chipper, 3B (S)
    Yunel, SS (R)
    Melky, CF (S)

And you still have Hinske and Omar on the bench! And Conrad; can’t forget my man Brooks Conrad!

Pretty dang good lineup. And not really far fetched.

But it’ll cost you some arms…

JJ for Corey Hart? Nope. Never. JJ for Corey Hart and Mat Gamel? I’d consider it. (That would be a “blow Wren away” kind of scenario, don’t you think?)

Huddy is the cornerstone of this staff. JJ had a stellar rookie year, but has shown signs of maybe being a little fragile. This year’s shoulder tightness was not the first time for that, then the hammy, etc… I’m not saying we need to dump him. Heavens no. But I’d listen.

24 vs. 35 is of little consequence when the 24 can’t go every 5th day.

But that really was not the trade piece I had in mind. I really didn’t have any one piece in particular in mind, but the Braves do have trade chips.

He might could be had for a mid-level majors ready pitcher, such as JoJo, and a complimentary player such as Nate, if the Braves would eat some salary.

Actually, Gordon might cost a little more than that since his contract will be very manageable for a cost conscious team like the Royals, but I think he’s worth exploring…

David DeJesus would be a nice pickup, even if he is a lefty. He’s a pretty good hitter, and a decent enough fielder. He can even play CF.

Now V…I like the idea of Gordon…but Jo-Jo is junk, we all know that. Might make a Loogy someday, or go to St. Louis and win 15 a year….what’s funny is the Royals have plenty of hitting, and should trade some of it away for pitching.

Remember, JJ had a 3.68 ERA his rookie year, 2.60 ERA last year. Probably overworked a bit at a young age.

Hudson hasn’t had an ERA below 3 since 2003. And he’s paid 9 mil. And he’s “old” in baseball terms. Do we really want or can expect similar numbers from a 36 year old Hudson and 38 year old Lowe next year???

Plus, it’s sad but true…sinkerballers tend to get pounded in the playoffs…

Last, night, though – too many opportunities wasted. Too many “shoulda”s. HeyHey shoulda caught that ball at the wall. They shoulda scored in the 3rd with runners at the corners and 1 out. They shoulda scored in the 4th with bases loaded and 1 out, etc. Opportunities were there. It didn’t happen. It looked like April for one night. 😐

Braves are reverting to their “losing streak” mode…. Wasted opportunities indeed. You just cannot have guys on 3rd with less than two outs and not get them in.

    McLouth still experiencing concussion symptoms

    8:07 pm June 24, 2010, by David O’Brien

CHICAGO — Two weeks after his June 9 outfield collision with Jason Heyward, Braves center fielder Nate McLouth was still experiencing concussion symptoms this week.

McLouth has been on the disabled list for two weeks and stayed behind in Atlanta while the team traveled to Chicago. He was administered a CT scan, the first such exam he had since he collided with Heyward when the two outfielders were pursuing a fly ball.

A Braves official said Thursday that McLouth was doing OK, but couldn’t say when he’d return because of the unpredictable nature of head-injury recovery periods.

Uuuuhhh… yeah. Convenient, isn’t it? I’ll bet he’ll need an extended “rehab assignment” to work out his hitting, I mean, concussion related problems.

Of course I never did the real risky stuff like eating raw fish, well, maybe an oyster… does three swallows trying to get said oyster to stay down count?

Use to sleep in the back window of my dad’s 50 Ford when taking the trip to the grand parents’ place. Rode a bike without a helmet, come to think of it, played football the same way. DUH!!! Now I know what’s wrong with me….

Yep, concussions are pretty tricky things, I’m sure I’ve had a couple in my life too. Cause some memory loss so I’m not positive. Most likely scenario for injury was doing housekeeping chores at work. I’m telling you guys, Metal stairways can put a hurting on you when you don’t realize you are under one and you raise up. CLONG!!!!

Anyhoo, It’s kind of a win win for the Braves to have Nate on the sidelines, I mean, no real obvious outs in the line up. Of course with the way Nate was playing, it might be tough to notice any difference in his pre and post concussive state. Still think the shock collar would be a good training tool for Terry to use on him….

    Rosenthal:

The Dodgers are in a box.

Their starting pitching is not good enough for the team to win the NL West, much less advance in the postseason.

Their farm system lacks the major-league ready prospects necessary to acquire a pitcher such as Mariners left-hander Cliff Lee.

And their ownership … well, let’s just say that no one should expect Frank McCourt to bust open his checkbook anytime soon.

General manager Ned Colletti needs to be pragmatic. He needs to be creative.

He needs to trade center fielder Matt Kemp…

Colletti could dangle Kemp to the Braves, who are deep in young pitching, in need of a right-handed hitting outfielder and in position to exchange a center fielder, Melky Cabrera, who played for Dodgers manager Joe Torre in New York.

Have any of you other folks noticed that Medlen has become Derek Lowe’s shadow? Always sits next to him on the bench or standing next to him on the rail. I think it has made both of them better. Medlen from all the insight that Lowe brings and Lowe because he remembers what he has told Medlen as he mentors him and it keeps him focused.

Did you guys catch Carlos Zambrano’s antics tonight? Wow, talk about out of control… He thought the defense let him down because they did not dive for some ground balls hit by him. He was suspended by the Cubs’ GM indefinitely. One must think that Michael Barrett must feel vindicated.

Nijer Morgan made the Nationals version of “The Catch” tonight as well on a ball hit to center by Adam Jones of the Orioles. Pretty nice catch but it will never have the impact that Otis Nixon’s catch of Andy Van Slyke’s would be homer had. Funny, we can say “The Slide” or “The Catch” and everyone knows the plays we are talking about.

Most memorable homerun for me was not the one David Justice hit against the Indians to give Glavin and the Braves the ’95 series but the one he hit off Rod Dibble in Cincinnati on a 101 mph fast ball to win the game that propelled the Braves by the Dodgers and into the playoffs.

Yes… a great all around effort tonight by Los Bravos. If Meds didn’t lock up a rotation spot last night, well… then I don’t know what will. He has a terrific change-up and even better mound presence. Reminds me of a young right-handed, er – dare I say it? – TommyG. He does. Even when they know the change is coming, they can’t hit it.

FBG, I turned on the game in the middle of Murph being in the booth. How awesome it was to relive his time here by telling my son countless stories. Of course, my son is not the Braves fan I am… not even a baseball fan really… but that’s OK. He tolerates me. 🙂

I do not anticipate that we would pull off any deal involving a player of Kemp’s caliber. But it would not surprise me at all if should acquire an everyday LF. As much as Hinske has done a fantastic job there, when he’s in the lineup it weakens our bench. I’d still prefer to have Hinske and Omar to play 2 or 3 times a week at several spots. I think that makes us very strong.

And from the “Call Me A Skeptic” category, this from MLBTR::

    Braves Not Actively Shopping Escobar
By Luke Adams [June 25, 2010 at 8:20pm CST]

One American League scout gets the sense that the Braves may be willing to trade Yunel Escobar, according to Mark Bowman and Chris Hempson of MLB.com. However, Bowman notes that the Braves aren’t actively attempting to deal the 27-year-old and that it would take an “extremely attractive package” for Atlanta to move him.

Escobar has performed below expectations so far this year, posting career lows in batting average (.250) and OPS (.651). Not only is the shortstop struggling on the field, but Bowman suggests that “some members of the Braves organization” wouldn’t mind parting ways with Escobar, due in part to his approach to the game.

There are a handful of teams, including the Tigers and Angels, who may look into acquiring a shortstop before the July 31st trade deadline. If they do, Escobar would be an intriguing option, though he won’t come cheap. Considering his age and his .301/.375/.426 slash line in over 1500 plate appearances from 2007 to 2009, the Braves won’t be inclined to sell low.

I think the Braves wold have to be absolutely blown away to trade Yunel. For one thing, there is no other everyday SS in the wings. Nada. For another, why? He may not be hitting for power, but he’s hitting. Unless they simply want to sell high… but hey better get a SS back in the deal.

I dunno about this. It befuddles me… 🙄

    More from over there:

Jason Heyward finally conceded that his sore left thumb is a real problem and that he’s going to see a hand specialist. Will be out of the lineup at least today and tomorrow, and could be longer depending on what they find in exam.

He’s never made excuses for any slump or bad game. But this isn’t an excuse, this is an injury, and Heyward finally admitted as much today.

Well, we all knew it. I’m glad HeyHey finally came to grips with it (no pun intended; OK, maybe a little). Anyway, maybe now he can get it properly taken care of. Wasn’t he paying attention to Jordan Schafer last year?

ATLANTA — Right-hander Jair Jurrjens may return to the Atlanta Braves’ rotation on Wednesday after making what is expected to be his final minor league rehab start in his return from a strained left hamstring.
Jurrjens gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings for Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday. He is back with his Atlanta teammates for a weekend home series against the Detroit Tigers.
Manager Bobby Cox says Jurrjens will throw a side session on Sunday. Cox says if Jurrjens has no setback, he’ll start against the Washington Nationals on Wednesday. Kris Medlen is Atlanta’s scheduled starter on Wednesday.

Nothing will lock a spot in the rotation for him apparently, V. 🙄 This is the kind of stuff I will not miss come next year. Though this is Wren’s doing no doubt as well. Medlin is youngest, cheapest starter, so he will go back to the pen. It will hurt the team to have him in the bullpen, but Kawakami is signed for this year and next.
ZERO reason for Medlin to except for money, and having the least experience as a starter. I’ll take it all back if this is for a few weeks, til someone can be traded….this is also why Nate will be given every chance to take over in cf. Like Kawakami, he is paid more than those who have replaced him.

On ESPN’s Baseball Tonight, they did a little demonstration of how the outside pitch made by Moylan to Damon could have been viewed as a ball. The angle from which the umpire was set up caused his view of the outside edge of the plate to be obstructed. The pitch Peter threw was right on the plate until it moved 4-1/2 inches outside at the last moment.

The position in which McCann held his glove also helped sell the idea it was a strike. I have seen that pitch called a strike a lot of times and never until tonight did I realized how an umpire could miss it. I hope some of the the Braves were watching that segment because it really opened my eyes…

Message to hitters: You better swing because that pitch is going to be a called strike. I also understand now how Tommy Glavin use to get that call for so many years.

I’m glad Heyward realize he was not helping the team trying to play through the hand injury. Let it heal bro… The Braves need you for the second half.

On Wags not being able to answer the bell: A reminder that many times players have nagging injuries we are not aware of and maybe we need to lighten up on the staff when they don’t perform up to expectations. That said, I wish Troy could get a chance to rest his feet.

If you were to put Troy and Brian McCann up against each other in a foot race it might be the first 4 minute 100 dash… Seriously, they would both lose. 🙂

Gil, I saw that story too! Very interesting because my first thought was that was truly a terrible call, but if he didn’t make it, game was tied, and Kawakami doesn’t get a win. Shows you can’t always trust your eyes.

Baseball tonight had a segment on a show, they have it….I don’t know, once every week or two? Anyway sports science. And they showed how a hitter sees the ball. They put some special glasses on Nomar when he hit. And when you first see a pitch from his angle…well, you really don’t see it. We forget how much easier it is to see the ball from a camera in CF, than right where the players and ump are. The Hitter probably has a better angle than the catcher and ump.
Also they showed how not only how quickly a hitter has to locate a ball, then make a judgment on to swing or not…but how basically they can’t see the ball the last 10 feet unless(IIRC) their eyes are closer to home plate, and they assume where the ball will be…amazing stuff!

That’s two bad starts in a row for Tommy Hanson, maybe it’s just the American League hitters he has trouble with, or maybe it’s because he cut his hair…. Anyway, he now has a higher ERA than Kawakami..

Tired arm? He is pretty young. Maybe with JJ coming back he could miss a turn. Just saying….

Gil, that’s amazing what’s happened to Hanson’s ERA in a few games. Worse than Kawakami. Who’d a thunk it???
His fastball seems awfully straight to me, and with a bit less zip on it. I would agree with skipping a start, but Bobby doesn’t like to do that. Remember the blister Jurrjens pitched with? Had to twist an ankle for it to heal, and start pitching better his rookie year.

Want to know something truly amazing?? I just checked the stats of a certain starter in the NL.
9-6 after a win today. 4.30 E.R.A. 96 innings, which would be 2nd on our staff, just 3 behind Hudson.
This mystery starter has 2 complete games, and one shutout. That would lead our club. Went 7 innings in the bandbox he plays in today, and beat another A.L. Team( making it at least the 2nd time he’s done that during interleague play)He will also turn 48 in Novemeber…give up??? 😛
Yep, Jamie Moyer, who can look truly finished at one point in the year, then prove everyone wrong. I bet Glavine still throws harder than he does…

Hanson has earned a day off. Agree that what he’s dealing doesn’t have the velocity or the snap we are used to seeing. Nothing wrong with getting a game off before the All Star Game. JJ is coming back at just the right time!

Hey… did y’all see where Zambaono claims he was only trying to motivate his teammates. Said that Derrek Lee “misunderstood” his efforts. Hahahahaha!!!

Nothing wrong with taking 2 of 3 from the Tigers. They’ve got a pretty impressive lineup and pitching staff. Now let’s see what this Strasburg kids really got.

    GO BRAVES!!!

Gil, it will be a very interesting game tonight! If ever there was a time that timing of the hitters was right for a flamethower, it’s now…of course everything I hear about Strausburg is that his “secondary” pitches are as good as his fastball. Joe Simpson mentioned that Smoltz called his curveball either the best one he had ever seen, or the best since Kerry Woods…I know he mentioned Woods in comparison. Oh, his changeup is 92, and acts like a splitter, fun! 😛

Normally, after the interleague play, I am a bit down. Don’t want to see the Nats , Marlins(in front of dozens of fans in Marlinville) and Mets, and certainly don’t want to see them beat us! But now, the Nats have Strausburg and that SS that looks like a future star….much more interesting folks. Even the Mets have Ike Davis, who plays the game the right way…

Wish I was rich, I’d go to the game today. Really rich, so I could sit where the A/C was blowin’! Yep, in my 40’s and the way the heat has been…umm, upon us of late….I couldn’t imagine sitting at the Ted…perhaps he will come back in September, and it will be in the 70’s…is that asking so much???? 😉

I hope he strikes out 16, and loses 3-2. Of course that would make it the first time he gave up more than 2 runs in a game!

It appears that the Mets are willing to include a good prospect in a deal for Cliff Lee as long as they are allowed to negotiate a long term deal first, and as long as they can get the deal done now. This is NOT good news for the Braves. With the way the Mets have been playing, the addition of Lee would make them very tough to beat. Santana and Lee at the top of their rotation for a few more years is a scary prospect.

    C’mon, Twins… step up!

V, come on Twins sounds like a good mantra! Like you said, we do not want him with the Mutts! The NL East may someday soon turn into the AL East, which wouldn’t be a good thing for the Braves.
Can’t imagine they could compete with what the Twins can offer, but I don’t know much about their farm…just had heard for the past few years, not much to write home about.
Twins have an everyday Catcher at AAA that naturally can’t get any playing time with Mauer there. They just need to toss in a pitcher, and then should be able to land him. Any team that trades for him, if he signs elsewhere in the offseason, gets 2 picks next year. So it seems to me you can offer a bit more for that kind of guy.

I just found this from ME from last Wednesday:

David DeJesus would be a nice pickup, even if he is a lefty. He’s a pretty good hitter, and a decent enough fielder. He can even play CF.

    At least I’m consistent.

And I do think he’d make a nice 5 hole hitter behind Glaus. Yes, I said 5. I’d bat Glaus cleanup, DeJesus 5th and Mac 6th. That’s a pretty stout middle of the order, if you asked me. But you didn’t, so…

Actually, my #1 preference would be to bat DeJesus 3rd, and Chipper 6th… but we know that won’t happen.

His current slash line is .331/.397/.481 with 5HR and 35 RBI. Definitely better suited higher in the order. Maybe a better #2 hitter.

Yes, I think I have talked myself into #2. (Wait, that looks alot worse in print than it did in my head… 😛 )

V, I’d love to have him, but I’d bet money they will give Nate another chance. Heck, everyone keeps talking about Diaz coming back and he hit .178 compared to Nate’s .176. Of course, Nate was healthy and had more A.B’s but he has the “potential” to provide a lot of power and offense. Plus, he has speed. Plus he’s paid 5 mil, and I just can’t see the braves cutting their losses with him til he’s shown one more time that he can’t hit here.
I hope…hmmm, what do I hope??? I don’t know…I have had very high blood sugar of late, and am making a concerted(SP? spell check didn’t find anything wrong, but it looks wrong to me) effort to cut WAY back on carbs. Has really helped in the a.m. but I just got really hungry and ate a few bites of pineapple…which cleared my mind completely! Wait…I hope Nate rehabs, shortens his swing, gets a bunch of hits, and gains confidence to hit in the bigs again. It would be the best solution.

Did ya know Chipper hit .265 for May and .271 so far in June??? Must have really stunk early this month, cuz he seems so much better the last few weeks.

And did anyone see how all the braves stayed in the dugout when Chipper came out after the 3 run homer Saturday??? What a great moment! I saw the homer, but a friend came over right as that happened, and I missed seeing it, but saw it on baseball tonight. Someone had a great idea, very classy! 🙂

As to Diaz’ hitting woes, at least he had a physical excuse. Nate has not had such an excuse.

Here’s the thing on Nate that could make things interesting: He makes $4.5M this year, $6.5M next and has a $10.65M option for 2012 with a $1.25M buyout. (He’ll never get a sniff of the ’12 option.)

For a productive, top-of-the order, gold-glove caliber CF with power, that’s a team friendly deal. For a guy hitting .176/.295/.282 with just 3 HR’s, it’s an albatross.

That said, he has a history that proves he is capable of performing at a much higher level, even an All-star level. I believe that if the Braves were willing to eat some $$$, like half of what he’s owed, he’s tradeable. Obviously, he has to come back and show that he’s healthy first. And half of the guaranteed $12.25 (including the buyout money) is only sightly north of $6M, making it entirely doable from the Braves standpoint. There is going to be a team willing to take a chance on a past All-star for just $3M a year.

From a business standpoint, $3M for ’10 and $3M for ’11 equates to cost certainty and a defined term. Budget minded teams, such as Kansas City, are built around cost certainty and defined term to facilitate operating with tight payroll constraints. Guys in their 2nd and 3rd years of arb are anything but cost certainty and defined term. As strange as that may sound, it makes Nate at least a bit desirable as a trade chip as long as the Braves brass is willing to absorb some of the cost. I think they might be willing to do so if for nothing more than minimizing their loss on him.

In the specific case of David DeJesus, he is guaranteed $4.7M for this year, and has a $6M option for next. Over the same term, that’s $10.7M for DD vs. (under my scenario) $6M for Nate, saving the Royals $4.7M. Obviously, Nate would be secondary to a prospect, but a necessary part of the deal to save $6M from our side and provide KC with a ML ready replacement. The Braves would give up a prospect plus Nate, and essentially pay $16.7M for 2 years of productivity and stability in LF. That’s only $4.6M more than their expected expenditure anyway, with Nate having worn out his welcome.

The Braves would lose a prospect, and increase their payroll only minimally, while stabilizing an unsteady position for the next 2 years. The Royals would give themselves some payroll relief, 2 years of cost certainty with the chance of a player revival, and a prospect to develop (for another team 🙂 )

    Win-win.

Interesting story as related on 680theFan:

Chipper told Joe Simpson going into Minnie that he saw something on video of his swing that he thought may have been his flaw. Since that point, he has a 10 game hitting streak, including a monster 3-run bomb against the 100mpph flame-throwing Justin Verlander.

We can only hope it’s true…

Funny that… I can see the flaw in Nate’s awing and I don’t even have to look at video…

Sigh, Ber the last time I went to Turner Field to see a game was in August 2007. It was such a miserable experience I have not wished to return. I did discover that if you sat in the upper deck or even on the concourse, it could be bearable but if you got in that mosh pit of humanity in the lower bowl it was stifling.

    Mr. O’Brien:

Braves rookie Jason Heyward has a strained thumb ligament that will not require surgery, said a person familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak about it before the team makes an announcement later today.

Heyward had an MRI done on his left thumb Monday morning, after soreness that’s plagued him for six weeks worsened to the point where he could no longer grip the bat using the thumb on his top hand.

The MRI exam revealed a strained ligament where it attaches to the bone, and possibly a bruise. While it’s not an injury that requires surgery, it’s possible the soreness could linger until Heyward gets extended rest in the offseason.

In the meantime, it will likely be up to the 20-year-old right fielder to play when he feels comfortable enough to do so. He’s out of the lineup for Monday night’s game, the third consecutive start he’s missed since the soreness.

That sound you hear is the collective sigh of a multitude of Braves fans… 😯

What is so terrible about going on the DL, if you are a Brave??? Chipper would have really benefited from a visit to the DL.
Now Heyward. In 94 AB’s in June, he is hitting .181 with one homer, and 7 RBI’s. Slugging .245. In other words, he’s Nate McLouth right now. Rest the hand for 10 days, then start swinging the bat. Nope…he will play tomorrow or Weds, and that thumb will keep getting hurt…I know…it won’t really heal til next year…well…if resting it for 2, even 4 weeks would make him say 80% well for the last 2 months, wouldn’t it be worth it???

Braves seem to be going the other way against Strausburg, a very good idea.
Nats keep fouling off Hudson’s pitches, 38 pitches thru 2 innings…
