107: What a Difference a Trade Can Make

by Berigan

Well, (as Ronald Reagan used to say) the trade deadline is just a few short days away, and not unlike spring training (except for fewer teams involved), most everyone is hoping their team is on the road to the playoffs, and with just one key move, will make it to the playoffs.

But are the Braves just one player away?  The results on the field would say otherwise.  The good news is, unlike many other teams, the bullpen issues could very well be resolved from within.  Perhaps it’s easier said than done but if a couple of raw starters who throw 95-100 (we are told) can make the transition to pitching in the 7th or 8th, it would be good on so many levels:  keeping the innings total down on their young arms;  MLB experience in a pennant race; and not trading away prospects for a guy or two who could leave in the off-season.

So really, all we need is a hitter (or 3).  No problem! Just trade the next Adam Wainwright away and grit your teeth every time he comes to town and beats our Atlanta Braves like a drum. But be sure to trade the uber stud away for a guy who will leave after one year! Enough about the upstairs homeboy’s worst trade next to Tex to the ATL.  Let’s focus on this year.

I know some people here might believe in the WAR stats.  I guess I am just a bit old-fashioned in that I don’t think you can truly put a number on how many games a guy can improve your team. I’m sure if you looked back to the trade of Fred McGriff some stat head would say he brought a WAR of 2 or 3 for those 2 + months. We all know he lit a fire under our offense, one we thought we would get from Teixera as well, but didn’t happen for some reason in 2007.

Quintin

However, the 2011 Braves HAVE to add a bat.  There isn’t a Braves fan alive (or dead) who doesn’t know that.  Who though??? At the time that this short post is being written, there seem to be two big bats available:  Carlos Quentin and Hunter Pence – and a just a notch below is Ryan Ludwick.  (Remind me again, could we have gotten him for Jo-Jo Reyes a few years back, or someone else?)  And really the more I dug into Ludwick’s numbers, his 62 RBI’s are really amazing, as the Padres offense is so putrid they make ours look decent.  I think the next highest RBI guy on the Padres has 35! So, which one would make the biggest difference?

Carlos has the most power, and in a pitcher-friendly park.  Plus Adam Dunn has had a year that no one could imagine, (.160 BA) so his relatively low .BA would likely go up coming over, though it’s been a few years since he’s been in the NL, so it may take a while for him to get back up to speed.  Hunter Pence, who is now a Philly, has less power (at least this year) but having another .300 hitter in the middle of the lineup, with doubles power, would have been huge, IMO. Plus he’s a high energy guy, which would have fit in very nicely here.

Ludwick has a low BA this year  (.238) but is no doubt feeling pressure to perform for a terrible team and, from a hitter’s standpoint, in a terrible  park.  He hit anywhere from .267 to .299 (in 2008)  for the Cards.  So, long story short (okay, a few paragraphs story) the adding of just one of those guys would take pressure off of  Uggla, McCann, Freddie, everyone, and with one more guy clogging the bases, more high stress pitches on the pitchers on the other team.

And while typing this I find out Nate is going on the DL!  Wonderful.  Ok, Coco Crisp and Carlos?   Can Heyward play center?  Or is he too old? 😀

And Gil, nice editing…for a sec I thought I had written this before the Pence trade! 😉 I do see I said “he” too ofter, instead of the players name, and some half finished thoughts as well…oh well, nothing new for me….
V, I too (I three?) like Byrd. Some Cubbies have weird offensive lines though. How do you hit .311 in 274 AB’s and have only 16 RBI’s? Wonder what they would want for him, since he’s probably their best outfielder?
I’d rather have Bourn though….he’s on his way to his 3rd straight Stolen base title. With him on base, #2 and #3 hitters (and I guess #4 hitters later in a game) will see more fastballs, pitchers will rush pitches, etc. See how much good that did the Astros? 😉
But, the Astros will again want a mint(and again, can’t blame them-if you are trading away one very good player, best on your team, you have to ask for 2 very good players in return, otherwise, why bother trading said player?) so that might not be possible, correct?
So…back to Ludwick (the Pitiful Padres only offensive force) and Coco. I’m sorry, but if we are down to getting Coco, I’d rather just see the team get by with the 27 Y.O. Rookie in Center til Schafer is healthy. Just can’t see him being an upgrade since he has no power, and doesn’t hit for much of an average…of course, if 27 Y.O. Hits .150 for 3 weeks, I guess Coco’s .260 + would look better….

Ber, what if Constanza hits .275? Yo realize that is about 50 points higher than either McLough or Schafer. What I have not yet seen is his arm. To me thet is a real key to a centerfielder’s value.

I don’t care if Jose can hit homeruns as long as he can get on base. There are very few Picky Hendersons or Jose Reyes out there who have that kind of power to lead off.

I still remember what Don Baylor told Chipper Jones when he gave him that big bat to swing. Told him to leave the singles to someone else, his job was to hit homeruns. Sometimes a single is all you need to win a ballgame but it is when you hit that single that is important.

Teams play the shift on guys like Howard and McCann because they don’t care if they hit a single to get on base, they are trying to prevent them from being in scoring position while standing at home plate.

Before my back gave out, I was a prolific homerun hitter, after my back injury, I could still hit but not for power. Nobody really wanted a 250 pound singles hitter.
Chipper Jones is a great RBI producer because he makes contact. He could hit for high average like Tony Gwen if he wanted but then who is going to drive him in. Schafer?

Sometimes guys have to be reminded of their roles, I think that is what Jack McKeon has been able to do with the Marlins, much the same with Charlie Manual and the Phillies. Keeping guys focused on who and what they are creates winners. Bobby Cox was so successful because he did not care what the bloglatites said, he put guys in the best position to succeed.

Probably for Delgado plus either Oberholtzer or Spruill, and a position player like Christian Betancourt.

Maybe Schafer gets tossed in… the ‘Stros are running out of outfielders. Heck, they can have Nate, too.

    Braves Acquire Michael Bourn
By Tim Dierkes [July 31 at 9:06am CST]

After seeing top outfield trade candidates Carlos Beltran and Hunter Pence land with National League rivals, Braves GM made a splash today by acquiring center fielder Michael Bourn and cash from the Astros for center fielder Jordan Schafer, southpaw Double-A starter Brett Oberholtzer, righty Double-A starter Paul Clemens, and righty Triple-A reliever Juan Abreu. The Astros announced the deal via press release.

    Bourn

Bourn (pictured) is hitting .303/.363/.403 in 473 plate appearances, and he leads MLB with 39 steals. He fills the Braves’ need for a center fielder and leadoff man through next year. The 28-year-old Scott Boras client has $1.45MM remaining on his contract this year and is arbitration eligible for 2012 before hitting free agency. The Astros’ outfield purge continues, as they sent Pence to the Phillies on Friday. The Reds, Giants, Indians, and Nationals had also shown interest in Bourn.

Schafer, 24, figures to replace Bourn as the Astros’ regular center fielder once he returns from the disabled list for a finger injury. He owns a .223/.310/.303 line in 414 big league plate appearances, coming in ’09 and this year. Before the 2008 and ’09 seasons, he was considered one of the best 50 prospects in the game, but an HGH suspension and wrist surgery dropped his stock.

None of the three pitchers are top 50 prospects, but they did rank ninth, 26th, and 27th respectively for the Braves on Baseball America’s preseason rankings, and the team has a highly-regarded farm system. Oberholtzer, 22, ranked ninth and is seen as a potential third or fourth starter in the big leagues. Clemens and Abreu both have big upside and impressive fastballs.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports broke the story, with Jayson Stark adding the prospects and Ken Davidoff adding the financial detail. Photo courtesy of Icon SMI.

    Also, buy one too…
Clearly, the braves still get little respect from ESPN (they have great baseball folks, but I hate the Sportscenter people, HATE that X-Games kept baseball tonight to a 30 minute show on the day before the deadline, on one of the many sister channels) so I was surprised when Tim K said it after many other trades were talked about first. He said, once Chipper and McCann are healthy, Prado could hit 7th, which would mean the braves ha a pretty good lineup if that’s what happens…at first I thought, why should he instead of JHey bat 7th, but Prado can hit anywhere…and JHey (I assume) batting 2nd will see a ton of fastballs…now, can he still hit them??? We shall find out!
All I know is we finally have a REAL leadoff hitter, the BEST base stealer in the game, all without giving up one of the big three! All hail Frank Wren!!!

    Outstanding…

    My lineup would be:

    1. Bourn (L)
    2. Prado (R)
    3. Chipper (S)
    4. Mac (L)
    5. Uggla (R)
    6. Freddie (L)
    7. JHey (L)
    8. Gonzo (R)

I would probably swap Uggla and Freddie depending on RHP and LHP.

In the end, we got the best fit, and didn’t give up one of the big 4. Just outstanding. I love it… really I do! 😀

Also said they may add someone else if necessary.

Well, now that the non-waiver trade deadline has passed, what do we obsess about now?

How ’bout the waiver trade deadline?

By all accounts, Frank made serious inquiries about re-acquiring Omar Infante from the Fish to resume his former role here as super sub. Now, according to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick, it appears as though Frank also checked in with the Mutts about Jerry Hairston for the same role.

Will Frank continue this pursuit in an August trade? I suppose over the next week or so, we’ll begin to get word of all the players that teams pass through waivers to make them available. (I know the lists are supposed to be confidential, but they always get leaked.)

And at the same time, we’ll hear the hue and cry from the dumb masses that certain players were submitted, even though every team passes a large percentage of their players as a matter of formality. I will almost certainly avoid going across the street for the entire month of August.

When is it acceptable to start talking about possible SS candidates for 2012? 😀

I’m thinking the list of available parts and pieces becomes a little larger as clubs near the point of “not this year”… Throw in the towel and try to A) shed payroll and B) let the young kids get their feet wet in the big leagues.

That’s usually about the end of August.

Frank Wren said yesterday that clubs typically flood the wavier wire with every player on the 25 man roster to find out who is interested and often to try and sneak a player thru. Kind of like the Democrats voting. Flood the registrar’s office with phonies so folks can vote more than once.

    Been there, seen that..

Now more baseball…. I still think the Braves would like to add a bat and another middle relief pitcher. Must say that Martinez has looked pretty sharp since his return from exile in Gwennett.

I think the Braves’ entire left side of the infield may be in need of an overhaul soon. Just my opinion be Marteen Prado is Omar Infante’ . Same type of player, you can plug him in just about anywhere and he will help you win. That said, he’s no Brooks Robinson at third. Not the typical power guy you see there or corner infield spots.

Barring injury, always looms in the background doesn’t it? I foresee Freddie Freeman as a fixture at first for a long time. Won’t be too long before other folks get to see what we already Know, Fab 5 Freddie is a gold glover at first and make the whole infield better. Not to mention that he has become a real threat to Chipper hitting in the three hole.

I still think BMac is a better 4 or 5 hole guy. Now if the Braves can just get Heyward going.

Perhaps we could trade for Rick Ankiel for the next two games, then trade him back to the Nats????
As for Prado…if he was hitting .307 like he did in 2009 and 2010, I bet you guys wouldn’t be saying what you are saying about him! 😉
But, it might make sense to trade him to a team that could really use a 2nd baseman that hits .280 to .300. I guess it just seems a bit unfair to me that he took one for the team, and now his offense isn’t what one expects from a corner outfielder….ok, how about this thought…move Uggla to 3rd next year (IF Chipper retires) and put Prado back at 2nd???? Guess we don’t know if Uggla has the arm, eh??? Or how about Uggla in left, Prado at 2nd??
Sounds like I missed a bad play by Uggla, but I also saw him race into short left and just miss a ball while doing some interesting moves as his crashed and burned…he doesn’t move at all like an athlete , but he seems to cover all the ground you can expect…

Ber, don’t get me wrong about Prado, I think he is a great player and a real asset, to the team, it is just that he is a really good utility player but is not really great at any one position. I’m not even saying that you shouldn’t play him everyday. He is a Charlie Hustle type player, gives you his all and a tad but more. Last night he crushed the ball several times but without good results. That has happened with him a lot this year. Sometimes they just don’t fall in.

All that said, with Marteen Pardo, it might just be that the sum of his parts are greater than the whole…

I guess I was just ragging on Dano a bit. He has generally played an excellent 2nd base this year. Sometimes maybe he tries a little too hard.

Just something to consider… last night, before I mercifully fell asleep in the 5th inning, one of the broadcasters for the Nats made the observation during Davis Ross’s at bat with the bases loaded that Rossy appeared to be trying to pull the ball, Hernadaz had noticed this and was pitching him away. Results was Rossy rolling over the top and grounding into a double play. He commented about how Maddux would watch the guy in the batters box to see how he was taking his practice swings to determine how he would pitch to the next batter based on how he was warming up.

Pretty amazing observation about Doggy, the guy (Greg) would make a hell of a bench coach….

Baseball has become almost like high stakes poker where there is somebody somewhere always looking for a ‘tell’.

On the homerun stat, that’s because guys are striking out instead of taking walks and getting on base, that and guys are trying to guide the ball rather than hit the ball. Just like pitchers, but different…

Maybe Derek has an oblique strain or something. Maybe a quad strain. Something. It might could just disable him until into September. That would be just “awful”. We’d have to call up somebody from AAA Gwinnett. Wonder if anyone down there is close to major league ready? 🙄

Well, on the bright side, Derek’s arm might be fresher when he’s “completely healed”. 😉

Now that Randall Delgado has been promoted to AAA, all of the Braves “Big 4” pitchers are just a step away. How would you like to be Todd Redmond? Not a bad numbers – 7-8 in 22 starts, 3.00 ERA, 6.88 K/9 – overall a solid AAA pitcher at 26 years old… and no chance at all of even a sniff of the big club rotation.

    That kinda sux for him.

I’m good with it. I mean, heck, Beachy can’t be any worse at the plate than, say… Gonzo right now, can he? And Gonzo’s batting 6th for goodness sake!

But man, did y’all see him flashing the leather last night? That dude is as smooth as Pete Van Wieren’s head…

I remember sitting in the LF stands in 1997 on my first trip to the Braves new home park Turner Field. It was Kenny Lofton’s one and only (thank God) season here. He led off the game with a single, and was followed immediately by Michael Tucker, who also singled. They proceeded to double steal, and both scored on a hit by Chipper. I remember it like it was yesterday. Those 2 guys ran on the opposing team (can’t remember who) all day. I have longed for another speed tandem like that. With Jose batting 9th, it’s just as good after the first inning.

Sorry JHey, I’m not missing you right now. Now, that’s not to say you can’t do something to change that, but do it, OK?

With Freddie being so red-hot at the plate, in the 3 hole, and with Uggs absolutely crushing the ball in the 4 spot, what does Fredi do with the lineup when Chipper comes back Friday, and then when Mac comes back?

Joe speculates that Chipper could bat 5th.

If I were Fredi, I wouldn’t move Freddie or Uggs until they cooled off some.

No way Proctor is on any post-season roster… especially when you consider that you drop to a 4 man rotation. And at this point, DLowe is the starter that gets shoved to the pen. But given his past pen experience, that’s not really a bad thing.

Derek proved last September that he can bounce back and be more than just adequate. Heck, he practically carried the Braves into October last season. I just think he cold use a couple of weeks worth of rest. Maybe about 15 days worth. *wink, wink*

I do think Vizcaino was brought to Gwinnett’s bullpen to get ready to help the Atlanta club. See David Price in the Rays 2008 World Series run. Exact same scenario.

I still think that Frank is going to try and bring in a utility guy to take Lugo’s place. Just a feeling.

The two biggest additions might be Chipper and McCann. That said, it seems as if its the pitching and not the offense that is behind the 8 ball right now.

One can only hope the Nats will play the Phillies as tough as they do the Braves but then, the Phillies have become a juggernaut.

I am not overly worried about that as the teams with the best record in the regular season don’t always make it to the World Series.

Good win by Los Bravos last night, always great to beat the Mets.

David Wright stole a hit from Marteen Prado early and gave one back to David Ross later. Goes to show what happens when you give a ball player too much time to think. Seen it so many times I’ve lost count. Almost like Chuck Knoblouch syndrome…

Anyway, great to see a guy like Constanza pick up a club. Kept the big inning alive by getting into a rundown rather than just standing there allowing Five and Marteen to advance.

And speaking of Five, Freddie continues to be fabulous with his hitting approach with two more doubles last night. I know it is not going to happen but if I were Freddie G. I would bat Chipper in the five hole when he returns tonight.

yes, very nice to see a scrappy kid like “George” get a chance and run with it! Kind of what I hoped would happen with Matt Young , but he was just getting singles, Constanza, err George has shown he can turn singles into doubles, Doubles into triples…and just cause havoc in general. Matt Young had 2900+ Ab’s in the minors before his cup of coffee, George has 3100 + even though he’s a little younger…
You know, I don’t think we, haven’t given FGonzo (hmm, doesn’t seem to work with a manager, does it?) Freddi G the credit he deserves for thinking outside the box…can anyone picture Bobby batting the pitcher 8th, and having two speedsters 9th and 1st??? I can’t, unless it was early in his career. And while I’m not crazy about his handling of the bullpen at times, I then understand it when someone who is not part of the big three comes in…Now, does he have the guts to tell Chipper he’s batting 5th til someone cools off??? 😉
Gil, I think Wright did rob Ross once as well, with that backhand stab (where Chip didn’t even think he even saw it) but it’s nice to see the braves get a few breaks go their way of late…

No way would he have ever batted the pitcher 8th. And that’s OK. His style worked. It work well, It worked HOF well.

That said, I think Fredi has had a brilliant 1st season at the Braves helm. I like what makes him different; likewise, I like what makes him similar.

As for Chipper, Bobby would never dream of bumping Chipper out of the 3rd spot. I can’t imagine that Fredi will have any qualms about it. In fact, I expect to see Chipper in the 5 hole tonight. I’ll be surprised if he’s not.

I’m thinking that if Freddie Freeman could talk a few more walks, he would be even more dangerous. That said, don’t mess with success, umpires are not inclined to give rookies the benefit of the doubt when it comes to balls and strikes, especially strike three, Seen it happen way too many times to both Heyward and McLouth. For what ever reason, they had better be swinging unless it’s in the dirt or to the backstop.

Personally, I don’t mind if the strike zone is 6 inches wider on the outside edge as long it is the same for everybody. What drives you crazy is for the zone to be all over the place.

While I think Chipper should hit 5th, I’m thinking he has little protection in that spot without McCann. I’m pretty sure he would be pitched around to get to Ross and AGon, nobody else left.

I’m hoping Minor pitches a gem this afternoon because there is still two months to go in this season and the Braves need the arm power.

Yeah, McCann painted the devil on that wall didn’t he? So, if your starting pitcher gives up 4 homers in 3 1/3 innings in a notorious pitcher friendly park, (a couple went for double), one would have to surmise it was the pitcher and not the conditions. Didn’t see any flying out for the Bravos….

I know everybody wants to ‘man up’ and pitch thru ailments but there comes a point where you are hurting your team. There is a difference in playing hurt and playing injured. I don’t think anyone would be too heartbroken if Tommy took an extra week or two off right now if that could fix the problem.

And if it can’t, well, that’s why Frank Wren has all those young arms stockpiled in the minors…

A comment about Mike Minor, I thought he pitched very well Sunday. He looked very poised on the mound and had good command. It was a shame the pen could not hold the Mets to two runs for him. dinks and bleeders are a killer.

Still needs to work on his slider/curve but his fastball and change were good today. I’m glad the Braves did not have to trade him because I am thinking they are going to need him down the stretch.

Yes Ber, a six man rotation could be an answer. I know you spoke in jest, sorta, but this time of year we see a bunch of guys run out of gas. What could it hurt?

I think the Brewers made a big mistake! You never know for sure, but I think they should have traded Prince for starting pitching and played Lawrie at 1st. His hits the other day were about as hard as any I have ever seen…Mike Stanton/Albert Pujols/Jason Heyward circa 2010 hard! Always fun seeing new guys in the majors! 🙂

He didn’t hang around long enough to lose what should have been a certain win for for the Braves, but his continued crappiness has caused us to have to bring in Kimbrel for the 3rd time on 4 days. This should have been a needed night off for the closer.

He’ll need tomorrow night off for sure, and we might not have the luxury of what started out as a 5 run lead in the 9th tomorrow.

Greetings from sunny south Georgia, was up to 103 a couple of times today. Headed to Sarasota Fla with two of the grandsons after their summer vacations in Virginia.

Now baseball, fell asleep in the sixth inning… Didn’t mean to but hey, it’s baseball…

Got to say I’m pretty impressed with Dan Uggla’s hustle. He is not the most gifted athlete on the team but he sure doesn’t let himself get cheated. Great to beat one out to keep his streak alive.

I think we have all felt apprehensive at times with Linebrink and Sherrill coming in from the pen but for the most part, they have held up their end of the bargain. Can’t say that with Proctor. Maybe the Braves see something in him they think they can fix. I can’t think of any other reason for him to hang on. May as well bring up Kawakami because he is already in the Braves’ pocket. Could expect about the same results.

Maybe there is a pitching coach somewhere who can help Proctor.Explain to him that getting movement on your fastball is all about finger pressure. His grip it and rip it approach makes him the ideal guy to act as a pitcher for the Home Run Derby. He doesn’t even have to do anything different than he is now. Just show up.

Thought it was good to see McCann spend the evening out with the bullpen guys, classy move on his part me thinks…

V, I don’t get the continued use of Proctor either…he was once a great 7th/8th inning guy, who was way overused by Torre. He can still hit 95, but his offspeed pitches look comical. Like he just learned them. Like Gil said, it may be a fear of ruining his arm. But he should be DFA’ed today. Wonder if its the pitching coach, manager, or GM that wants him on the roster???

Glad to see them get the win though, got to beat these guys while they are in a funk because the Bravos will be facing a resurgent Cubs team when they get home.

    Braves To Release Scott Proctor
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [August 10 at 8:25am CST]

The Braves will release Scott Proctor, according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman (on Twitter). The move will create roster space for Arodys Vizcaino, Atlanta’s number seven prospect before the season, according to Baseball America.

Proctor posted a 6.44 ERA with 5.5 K/9 and 5.8 BB/9 in 29 1/3 innings for the Braves this year. The 34-year-old, who signed a minor league deal with Atlanta in April, has struggled since appearing in 83 games in consecutive seasons (2006-07).

The Braves recently promoted Vizcaino to Triple-A and moved him to the bullpen, where he struck out eight hitters without allowing a walk in seven innings. In 97 innings of work as a starter and reliever across three levels this year, the 20-year-old has a 3.06 ERA with 9.3 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9.

No surprise to anyone. The only real question is “Why did this take so long?”

What angers me is exactly what I said yesterday. Proctor’s lack of effectiveness caused Kimbrel to have to pitch Tuesday when he was supposed to have the day off. Then, he had to pitch last night because of extra innings. That’s 4 games out of 5 days for him.

    What a great move, though.

The presence of Vizcaino will allow Fredi to have 4 door-slamming pitchers for the last 3 innings. This will facilitate getting these guys a real day off each week, not a Proctorized day off, which is NO day off.

The league’s best bullpen just got even better. AZ will get no closer than their current 4.5 game gap.

So let it be written; so let it be done.

Good and bad. The bad is mostly attributable to adrenaline and jitters. The kid was kinda all over the place. But man, what an arm! He has absolutely filthy stuff. Once he gets his 20 year old nerves under control, he’s gonna be something to see for sure.

Good morning folks, preparing for our return trip north today. I did get to see a bit of Arody’s debut last night. I thought it was Martinez at first and was thinking, I don’t remember him throwing that hard. Anyway, a little all over the place but understandable.

We can watch him progress as the season goes along, He needs to get his legs under him a bit first. As for Proctor, he can’t say he wasn’t given ample opportunity to succeed. He’ll end up somewhere soon where winning is not so important.

Vizcaino can handle the pressure. It wasn’t pressure that got him last night, just the jitters of making his Big Show debut. The kid’s got filthy stuff and a very bright future.

Now, the polar opposite is Proctor. There is no fixin’ that mess. He’s done, washed up, kaput, fini, and through. He just needs to take his money and leave, and not let the back door hit him where the good Lord split him…

My guess is he might get a nod from the Nats now that he will earn minimum.

On Vizcaino, it has been my observation that guys with really good stuff should just hurl it across the plate and let the ball’s movement do the rest. When they get timid and try to hit the corners, they end up walking a bunch of guys. That corner pitching is for someone like Lowe who can actually hit them but does not have Hudson stuff…

I really don’t get upset with solo homers, it’s the ones a pitcher gives up after a couple of walks that irk me.

No way the Braves should have lost but they managed to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory. McCann should have been in the 5 hole and he really looked a bit lazy on the two ‘wild’ pitches.

I think the fact that Boscan was not optioned back is a big indicator that they all know Mac is a little iffy. I’d rather he get “right” now, and be closer to 100% down the stretch. Great comeback in the ninth too, never would have guessed it but this Braves team continues to tease the heck out of me. Don’t think the really have a chance to catch the Phillies right now. They may get a little closer as the Phillies rest some of their guys in preparation for October but the Bravos are like the old joke about not needing to be the fast person in the group when being chased by an angry bear, you just don’t want to be the slowest.

And I am about to start thinking that this could be it for Chipper. I know he had some specific personal goals in mind, like 500 HR’s, but he won’t get there now. At 446, he might have gotten there if he could have stayed relatively healthy for the duration of his current contract, but I think he is realizing that he can’t.

Look, he’s a lock for the HOF. He’s the best switch hitter in the game’s history. He has nothing else to prove. But I’m starting to get antsy every time I see him move in fear that he’s gonna tear something. It’s uncomfortable to watch. I can’t imagine how it must feel to him…

On Chipper being moved to the 6 hole…. Hand writing on the wall one could say.

And yes, playing without full abandon is like prevent defense, playing not to lose, trying to work on a car without getting dirty…. results are always the same.

At some point you have to go all in or go home. Chipper won’t have the home run numbers for a first ballot HOF’er but he will get there. Just hitting homeruns was never his game, lots of other things to consider. He has been a force in every lineup.

He’ll play out the year, maybe come back next season, I think it depends on how far the Braves make it to postseason. Winning a second WS ring would be a great way to go out. I don’t know if it will happen but this bi-polar team we call the 2011 Braves has a chance to pull it off.

The addition of Constanza and Bourne has really change the complexion of this team. If J-Hey can just get himself back to where he was last year, this team could be absolutely awesome. Hey, Uggla did it….

I still see Prado as a great utility guy who could sub anywhere.

Actually, I think Freeman in the 3 hole was working pretty well. Move McCann to 5 and Chipper to 6th. Gonzo hitting 7th is going to increase Chipper’s walk totals a bunch. I think having Constanza in the two hole and moving Prado or J-Hey behind Chipper could help both.

FF at the plate late, gives one quite a bit of confidence!

I think the braves are waiting for it to be midnight for Constanza , and don’t want to count on him too much, if that makes sense. Easier to replace and 8th or 9th place hitter…

If Chipper retires after this season, I still think Prado should go to 2nd(where his numbers look better) and Uggla can go to third, if his arm is good enough…really don’t know if his arm is good bad, or indifferent, anyone know???

Because he’s hitting there. With a guy like that, from whom so little was/is expected, you don’t change a thing. Just keep sending him out there and letting him go. And hold your breath.

And Uggla will never play any other position aside from 2B. He’s never been very good defensively, but this season he’s actually proved to be adequate. Much like Constanza, you don’t change a thing. Just stay the course…

Great story about Thome Ber, I remember seeing him play for the Charlotte Knights way back when, before he made it to the big leagues, he hit the ball a long way then too, beat the Richmond team more than a few times with his bat.

On Costanza hitting in the two hole, just thinking that if you wanted to get two guys on base with regularity, you might want them batting one two… It kind of clogs up the base paths when you put a station to station player in between ‘George’ and ‘Jason’…

Prado may have the record for the number of CSs this year, Otis Nixon really needs to work with him on getting a good read off of pitchers or perfecting a good crossover step.

So tell me, at what point do the Braves send Linebrink into the winless protection program to join Scott Proctor? Man, every time it seems that it signals the Braves have thrown in the towel when they bring him into a game.

Nice comeback in the ninth but a bit too much to overcome.

There is still something amiss with JJ. Power is down so he is not able to get the strike out when needed. Oh well… curse of the All-star game….

… or before Aug. 31 to make a roster spot for someone – anyone – who can pitch effectively in October.

    from Jayson Stark…
    • The Braves continue to say there’s nothing more serious than tendinitis going on in Tommy Hanson’s shoulder. But one scout who saw Hanson’s last start is worried: “His fastball had absolutely no life. And his arm angle was way down. His elbow was down there next to his ear. He looked like Johan [Santana] looked last year right before the Mets shut him down. And that’s not good.”

On a more positive note from the same Stark piece:

    • Speaking of [Dan] Uggla, all he needs to do now is hit 33 homers this year [he currently has 27], and he’ll become the only player in history in the 33-33 Club (as in: 33-game hitting streak in a 33-homer season). The only two men in the 30-30 variation of that club are Joe DiMaggio (56 and 30) in 1941 and Rogers Hornsby (32 and 42 in 1920).

    High cotton, mighty high cotton…

So much to say, so little time… I thought about the witless. protection program but that is currently filled with folks from across the street….

Yeah, I’m thinking JJ and Hanson are damaged goods. Reminds me a lot of the Milwood episode. Young tender arms don’t fare well in the bigs…

Uggla only needing 6 homers? That’s pretty doable, Funny we can say that after the first half of the season.

Could get there even faster if he could face Linebrink or Proctor.

I’m thinking that signing Wes Helms is a pretty low risk move. Not a bad right hand bat off the bat off the bench and he can play a serviceable third and first.

I’m thinking Lowe and some salary relief will be gone pretty soon after the end of the season. Braves will pay some of the $15 million but will get a couple of low minor prospects.

Braves might even toss in a few balls and bats while they are at it.

Dereck’s days as an everyday starter are behind him. Could still be a pretty good closer but not too many closers make $15 million a year.

Good morning all, catching up on all the quotes and notes from last night’s gem and I was thinking about all the years the Braves had a pen that could not hold a 5 run lead.

And this is without one of the Braves better relievers in Moylan being out for 4 months. Despite have guys like the two ‘Scotts’ throwing gasoline on the fire out of the pen, the Braves have a very nice group of hurlers to opt from.

It is debatable if the Braves will extend their relationship with Moylan after this season because they may have younger and cheaper options by next spring. Peter may be auditioning for a spot when he come back in September.
