128: And It Begins Again

So, here we are again, the annual rite of spring, opening day of Major League Baseball. Okay, so the Dodgers and Diamondbacks got a jump on everyone by going down under in a convoluted scheme by the commissioner to expand the brand of MLB by playing a three day set in Australia. So, the Dodgers are up by 3 and Arizona is mired deep in the cellar of the NL West and everyone else is still busy unpacking and repacking as they prepare for the 2014 season.

However, since this is a Braves site, I won’t waste a lot of time worrying about the other 29 teams in MLB, I am going to focus primarily on this blog’s namesake. So, without further ado, let’s discuss the pluses and minuses of the Braves’ 2014 addition. First the pluses. Location, location, location…. or in baseball speak, the schedule. As opposed to last season when the Braves has one of the toughest schedules to begin the year, this season, Atlanta faces one of the easiest schedules. I’m not saying the Braves will win three out of every four games but at least they should not be mired 10 games behind the Nationals by April 10th. Is that even possible?

Santana3

Santana

The Bravos who are clearly wounded by the double whammy of Kris Medlin and Brandon Beachy going down on successive days to elbow injuries, the Braves went from pitching rich to pitching poor almost over night. At least the braves were fortunate to have Ervin Santana still available for a late spring acquisition. While Santana might never be confused as a Greg Maddux level signing, he certainly may prove to be the guy who saves Christmas for the Bravos this season.

MikeMinor3

Minor

Mike Minor and his “Damn Brother, I don’t Think I would Have Told That” condition/injury which I am sure must have been both painful and embarrassing for him. I think I would have just said I got dropped kicked in the family jewels in a bar fight and been done with it. Anyway, at least it is not an elbow….. He should be back by May and along with off season trade pick-up Gavin Floyd, who is also returning from Tommy John surgery should give the 2014 Braves a much different look as far as their pitching staff goes. After all, a starting staff of Ervin Santana, Mike Minor, Gavin Floyd, Julio Teheran and Alec Wood/Arron Harrang seems infinitely more intimidating, at least on paper, than one of Julio Teheran, Alex Wood, Arron Harrang and David Hale.

Venters

Venters

Of course, you just never know. Every team is on small tendon away from being on tap to being an also ran. The Braves still have a potentially strong bullpen staff. One which is the main difference between them and 20 or so other major league teams. Not saying there are not so weak links but getting back a strong Jonny Venters for the second half could be a real difference maker.

UgglaDan

Uggla

And think, we have not even begun to talk about the Braves’ offense. That could be the real difference this season for the Bravos. A rejuvenated Dan Uggla appears to be set to finally be the guy Frank Wren traded away play maker Omar Infante for. $13 million dollars a season is not that big a contract these days as far as professional baseball players go but for the Braves, it is a significant chunk of coin. Along with BJ Upton who without question was the biggest disappointment for Atlantan’s since Sherman broke thru the defenses of John B Hood in 1864, Uggla and BJ both appear ready to finally pay off on Wren’s investments.

Douomit

Doumit

Ryan Doumit also looks to be a good off season pick-up for Atlanta. A guy who has power and can play several different positions as well as catch give the Braves some protection against Evan Gattis not being able to live up to last year’s storybook season. I’ll be honest, I think Evan will get off to a bit of a slow start because he has not had the opportunity to get his timing down this spring. Remember, last year Evan won a spot due to his red hot bat which had the benefit of some winter ball to get him going. This year, we learned El Orso Blanco had off season surgery on his left knee. Who knew it was a problem? No one ever mentioned it last season. Still, the Braves will miss BMac but all and all, I think the Braves will be okay at the back stop position.

Freeman

Freeman

Freddie Freeman has been red hot all spring, he looks to be finally become the Super Star a lot of us all thought he would be. Personally, I have thought Fab 5 has been overlooked by a lot of folks as far as his value to the team. A lot of balls are snagged by Freddie that go as throwing errors for the rest of the infield whenever someone else occupies the 3 spot.

Heyward

Heyward

Jason Heyward has looked strong this spring and is poised to be the biggest and strongest lead off man in the majors. Put that in with a gold glove defense and I think we will finally see J-Hay begin a string of All-Star appearances. The other brother from a different mother (and father) Justin Upton hopefully will play with a little more fire. He can be really, really good at times but he sure can give appearances of being lackadaisical at times.

Simba keeping up his excellent glove work as well as the improved play of Chris Johnson at third can really benefit the Atlanta pitching staff. While I think it will be really difficult for CJ to repeat his 2013 season as far as his batting average is concerned, Andrelton’s continued maturity at the plate should make up for it. Simmons has surprising power but it is his low OBP which is worrisome.

The Braves have a strong bench with Doumit, Pena, Laird, Schafer and Pasternicky. The one thing the Braves lack is an extra power bat from the left side. Did we ever think that would be the case? After being lefty heavy for so many years?

So, let the games begin! Try not to get too high or too low because as we have seen for so many seasons, things can change in the blink of an eye. Riding high in April, shot down in May…. So true, especially in baseball. 162 games of nail biting and then there are the play offs but first you have to throw out the first pitch.

Excellent work as always Gil! 🙂
Good point about Gattis having all winter to play the year before…hopefully, when he does warm up, he will be able to stay warm longer, since he won’t have played all those winter games….
Ryan Doumit…..I still think he could be a starter, and if he gets some chance to play, he may bring something worthwhile, along with a prospect.
Would feel better about trading him, than Gattis. If Gattis shows he can hit again(and honestly, from a purely catching / fielding the ball aspect, I think he was already as good if not better than McCann) I’d hate to trade Gattis….unless we are waaaaay out of the playoff hunt, and can get a real #1 or #2 starter….

So, Harold Rynolds, late of the MLB Network, is moving to Fox. I really like Harold’s commentary. He will be replacing Tim McCarver in the booth on Fox telecast and that is not a bad thing. Sorry, but I have never been a big fan of McCarver. Of course, I grew up watching Dizzy Dean and Pee Wee Reese do the game of the week so I was spoiled.

Gil, didn’t know that about Harold Reynolds,…just saw him on their prediction show yesterday….just looked it up, he will do Fox games, and stay on MLB TV as will Tom Verducci….very smart move to allow them to work on both channels. And have always thought Harold got a raw deal at ESPN (I do NOT know the story, but they apparently don’t allow men to talk to women…or something like that-he and the former Mets GM were fired for Sexual harassment, but Monday Night Football guy Mike Tirico, keeps his job…lookup his pattern of true sexual harassment, ) Anyway, Harold should do a great job…

Off to the Rivah today. have already called my satellite internet provider to reactivate my connection for the summer. All the comforts of home really except my office. Of course today is the day we get to make sure no critters have moved in over the winter months….. It’s like spring traing, but different…

I thought the Braves bats just were not timely enough yesterday. Poor Evan, he really looks to be struggling with a bat this year. Too much on his plate too worry about hitting but the Braves need his bat if they are to have a chance.

The Braves just missed on several pitches but that is the name of the game isn’t it? To make sure you can keep the other guy in the park?

I kind of dreaded the Braves beginning the season in Milwaukee. They just do not seem to match up well against them for some reason.

Pretty amazing art work CL. Oh how I wish I had his talent…

Think Gattis is just too anxious about this year? He began with such a bang last year, he might be up tight about maybe not being able to do it again. Youth and inexperience. I hope as the year settles in, he’ll be able to regain his footing.

Ah. my will to live has been restored…. The Braves will not go 0-162 this season and apparently, they will not be shut out. The three run homer is a beautiful thing but a two run dinger and two solo shots will suffice.

My, how could I have doubted Kimbrel? Of course, that slider of his still needs to be harnessed but evidently his fastball is unhittable. Not like the batters did not know it was coming.

Other than the ambush first pitch by Alex Wood, I thought he really pitched well. Quite a performance for such a raw rookie.

Hey, who didn’t know he’d throw a first pitch fastball down the middle to open the game? I just didn’t expect it to get walloped. How can you not like a guy whose name is Beato? The 29 year old Beato had a 3.60 ERA in 10 appearances with the BoSox last season. He has 81 career appearances in parts of 3 seasons with the Mets and Sox.

Buchter is likely the odd man out of the pen when Beato is activated before Friday’s game in DC.

Fortunately, Miss Josie insisted I take her to lunch so dropped by the local sports bar and lo and behold, the game was on. Got to see the final two innings and wow, what a performance by Carpenter. Two on, no outs and then struck out the heart of the gNats order. He deserved the save if you ask me.

gNats fans were having a hissy fit over the reversal of the fortune on the inside the park homer/ground rule double. While if I were a gNats fan, I would cry too, the umps got it right. Still does not make up for the infield fly debacle of 2010 it helps.

So, here is the $64 million dollar question? Who gets sent down when Santana gets activated? Hale, who has pitched beautifully? Gus Schlosser, who has also pitched well in relief or Anthony Varvaro who I have not seen make an appearance this season but has been knocked around quite a bit after his initial success at the beginning of last season? Who has options? Do they want to keep Hale stretched out? So many good young arms, so many tough decisions.

I guess it will come down to who has options….

My guess is that Schlosser will go down so that he can get regular work. Just a guess though…

  61. 64 Vox O'Raison April 6, 2014 at 4:08 pm

I’m gonna change my last statement. A reliever will go down when Santana is activated, But probably not Schlosser. He’s actually pitched pretty well out of the pen, and that delivery is tough on both righties and lefties. But more importantly. I think he’s actually in the Braves bullpen plans. Hale, however, is a starter, and will stay that way. Varvaro is out of options, and would have to be passed through waivers or traded or something. Could happen. Can’t imagine why he hasn’t made an appearance yet, but it doesn’t bode well for him. When Minor gets here in a couple more weeks, I expect Hale to go down to AAA and stay stretched out as a starter.

I’m surprised a lot of guys have not yet made an appearance. I guess Fredi has Bobby Cox disease, that is, falls in love with the same guys and pitches them until their arm falls off…. Neither Varvaro, nor Bealto have made an appearance. I’m not sure if they have some physical issues or the Braves have not been sufficiently far enough out of a game to trust them in a game?

Yesterday was a tough one for Wood to lose. One mistake pitch and boom, a ball hit 380 for a homer. Dan and J-Hey both hit 400 foot bombs that fell short of a deep center-field fence. Bummer. Oh well, tough to sweep a team in their home ball park

Like I said, I’m greedy. I want the Braves to win them all but being 4-2 after starting the season with a six game road trip is not all that terrible. Going to be interesting. Looks like the Brewers were not so shabby either. They have given the Red Sox all they wanted. Should be an interesting series between the Marlins and the GNats.

With the rain, it is a good day to have off….

CL, not sure if it’s Baby Braves, Part Deux quite yet but I do think it bodes well for Atlanta to have such depth at the pitching position. That said, the difference between an Ace and a number four is frequency. Nearly all major league pitchers have the ability to hurl a gem, the one thing that separates the wheat from the chafe is if they are able to consistently repeat top of the order type performances.

I have been very impressed by Alex Wood’s two recent starts. Other than one pitch in each game, he has really been a shut down type guy. Even that is kind of unfair because even the best pitchers will give up home runs.

Teheran showed a lot of poise too. He clearly did not have his best stuff Saturday but he worked through it To my way of thinking, it is not as hard to pitch a game in which you allow no base runners as it is to consistently have to pitch out of trouble. Also realizing that giving up a run or two early does not mean you have lost the game. Didn’t we see the difference in Mike Minor when he finally realize that was the case?

So, I guess the only real question is how do they keep their pitchers healthy and out of the operating suite? Hire Leo Mazzone?

    Through the 1st 6 games:

    JUp: 3 for 25, 10 K’s, 0 HR, 0 RBI
    BJ: 4 for 25, 11 K’s, 0 HR, 0 RBI
    JHey: 3 for 27, 8 K’s, 1 HR, 2 RBI

Yes, Ber… Hank said this last night:

“Sure, this country has a black president, but when you look at a black president, President Obama is left with his foot stuck in the mud from all of the Republicans with the way he’s treated. We have moved in the right direction, and there have been improvements, but we still have a long ways to go in the country. The bigger difference is that back then they had hoods. Now they have neckties and starched shirts.

Why is it that it’s OK for PresBo to be black to the black people, but not to anyone else? In reality, he’s half & half. He’s vilified for his extreme policies and illegal tactics, not for how much light his skin reflects. And to paint the Republicans’ resistance of Socialist policies as racist is racist in and of itself. I find it hard to believe there is not more being made of the statement, but it’ll never get the same treatment in the press that an anti-PresBo statement would have gotten.

Hank experienced racism first hand…I know he had a real rough time in Jacksonville Fl (lived there 10 years, easily the most racist city, at least big city there is) you can read about it and other issues, here…
    http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2014/04/us/hank-aaron-anniversary/?hpt=hp_c4
Here is one quote from the article…
“You could hardly see and I’d be trying to throw a baseball and she’d say ‘Come here, come here!’ And I’d say, ‘For what?’ She said, ‘Get under the bed,’ ” Aaron said in a rare interview with CNN this month.

The family would hide under the bed for several minutes and then “the KKK would march by, burn a cross and go on about their business and then she (my mother) would say, ‘You can come out now.’ Can you imagine what this would do to the average person? Here I am, a little boy, not doing anything, just catching a baseball with a friend of mine and my mother telling me, ‘Go under the bed.'”
I am trying to not make excuses for the man….he is clearly scarred from his past. We all know the nasty threats against him when going after Babe’s record.
That being said, I imagine in the last 40 years, he has run into less and less racism…more often than not, hearing tons of praise from white people. Perhaps he thinks if he wasn’t Hank Aaron, they wouldn’t like him?
I wish he could get called out on this by more people, in that he would have to talk about it, his feelings, why he feels this way.
Have people point out Bush still was attacked (and still is) way more than 0 ever will be….but, you vote dem, watch CNN and MSNBC, and most importantly, hang with ONLY your own race….you are likely to think like Hank thinks these days….

On Walden, I’m thinking he is simply trying to throw too hard. Thus, he is not in control of his location, If he could decrease his effort a smidgen, he could still get good results and a few more strike calls. ,

OK. We got our answer on which reliever would exit to accommodate Santana’s arrival (Beato). Not really a surprise, I suppose. Beato has options, Varvaro does not. With Gearrin gone, the depth has taken another hit, and we can’t afford to just let pitchers walk. Fortunately, pitching was the one area on the Braves where there was great depth to start. Now there is just barely adequate depth.

So… there are still a couple of questions to answer. Neither easy, but one has the potential to be really difficult.

When Minor is ready to join the team at the end of the month, which starter exits the rotation, and to where?

I assert that it will be Hale, and that he’ll be demoted to AAA to pitch regularly and stay stretched out and be available to return in the (inevitable) event of injury to another starter.

But Floyd… when Gavin Floyd is ready to join the Atlanta squad, then what?

Now I realize there is another 4 weeks or so until he’s ready to step in. And alot can happen in 4 weeks. Alot. But Aa-ron (pronounced A-Ron; I like that nickname) has pitched brilliantly in his 2 starts thus far. If he continues his resurgence, whither Floyd? All of the starters have been fantastic. Woody is a potential star. Teheran is already a star. Santana… well, you saw last night what he is. Then there’s Minor. He has enough of a history here to tell us who he is. There is no way they’d mess with A-Ron if his next 2-3 starts are anything like his first 2. So what of Floyd if they are?

It’s a good problem to have, and not one I want to venture to answer just yet. This is truly one where it’s best to cross that bridge when we get there. There are many trolls along the road that could make a difference…

From Billy Wagner’s “A Way Out,” p.124 – talking about the influence of people on him and how he learned to be a positive influence on teammates:

“Personally, highlights for em were the guys I got to meet or guys I was able to influence. A guy like Braves closer Craig Kimbrel sticks out for me. He was the new kid on the block with the Braves in 2010. I had the chance to talk with him and maybe help him through some things he went through in his first taste of the big leagues.”

“Craig came to my attention in spring training. He wasn’t raw but he had more talent than experience. One of the things that grabbed my attention were the similarities between me and him; the way we threw the ball and other quirky things we did. But mainly, the thing that drew me to Craig was his willingness to learn. He liked to ask questions, he wanted to be one of the best out there. I had the opportunity to reassure him that the same things he was concerned about were the things I was still concerned about. We had a good enough relationship that I could tell him things that other people couldn’t and he knew he could trust me. I wasn’t going to short-change him or hold out on him because I was afraid he was going to take my job.”

    p.125:
“The fun thing about working with Craig is that Roger McDowell had given me so much leeway with him. Roger asked me to go to the bullpen to work with Craig, and when I came back, I told him, “I changed his mechanics.” Roger just said, “Okay.” Fortunately, it paid dividends for Craig right away and that was because Craig bought into what I’d told him and worked so hard. He trusted me; he knew I wanted him to do well. I told him that it was a process; he’d always be adjusting, but we all go through it. He had to be himself. He’s not me. I wasn’t Trevor Hoffman or Mariano Rivera and that’s okay. He didn’t need to worry about what people outside his team said; he only needed to concern himself with what his teammates were saying. That’s who you’re playing for.”

Better stuff than the results of last night’s game….. I thought Varvaro did a heck of a job with one out and the bases loaded of coming in and pitching out of trouble. Same could not be said for Avilan and Schlosser. Oh well, tonight is another game and another series. The gNats swept the Marlins so they have to be feeling pretty cocky, time to bring them back down to earth.

Baseball is one of the most dangerous sports played CL. I remember reading somewhere that a lot of guys would much rather play football because you never hear of someone getting killed playing football but guys routinely are hit by 90 mph fastballs and such.

The story above is a reminder of just such a tragedy and my heart goes out to his parents.

Now, in other baseball news, do you think Denard Span wonders what ht him after running into Uggla.last night?

I thought I might take a stroll over to the self-proclaimed “world wide leader in sports” to see how they treated the Braves’ sweep of the Nats over the weekend. I was just curious to see if our beloved Los Barvos might get a little love over there. I mean, after all, they are from neither the northeast coast nor Cali. But I really did think they might get a little credit for their sweep of the prematurely anointed Nats.

    Nope.

There is an article of how injuries have depleted their roster and how the “baseball gods decided to punish” the Nats, and the Braves, and touted the possibility of Miami’s Giancarlo (Mike) Stanton basing HR’s in the playoffs.

    Excuse me?

So, the Braves can lead the league in ERA – with their best starters entering late in the month – and they can have a resurgence on offense against the vaunted Nats rotation, but not catch any credit at all?

Now I do understand that the tail wags the dog, and that with the self-proclaimed “world wide leader in sports” it’s all about TV markets and revenue. It’s evidenced by the hierarchy of TV markets, and the proportional amount of love their respective teams receive. Look at the Top 10 and judge for yourselves…

    1 New York, NY (Yankees/Mets)
    2 Los Angeles, CA (Dodgers/Angels)
    3 Chicago, IL (Cubs/White Sox)
    4 Philadelphia, PA (Philthies)
    5 Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX (Rangers)
    6 San Francisco-Oak-San Jose, CA (Giants/A’s)
7 Boston (Manchester), MA (Red Sox)
    8 Washington, DC (Nats)
    9 Atlanta, GA (Braves)
    10 Houston, TX (Astros)
    11 Detroit, MI (Tigers)
    21 St. Louis, MO (Cards)

I threw in Nos. 11 and 21 because the Tigers are pretty well covered all the time, and the Cards are just a MLB haven. I think for the most part, the teams get a proportional amount of love directly related to their position on the ol’ national market rating scale. If you take the Bosox and place them just under the Yankees and Mets, and raise the Cards into the middle somewhere, you have a pretty good representation of the ‘hierarchy of love’ from he self-proclaimed “world wide leader in sports” to MLB teams. The 2 exceptions? Houston – largely because they really do suck – and the Braves. I can’t explain the Braves. I just can’t. Maybe it’s some long held grudge against Ted Turner who rebelled against all the TV norms to promote his America’s Team? I don’t know. It continues to baffle me, and I need to get over it.

Rays’ manager Joe Maddon agrees with me…

“Sometimes you have to look underneath the surface and I tend to agree it has a lot to do with youth sports and travel teams and multiple travel teams and kids pitching to win when they’re really young and throwing too many pitches,” Maddon said. “I think the more recent epidemic curiously might be tied to what they’re doing before they even get here professionally.” – AP via NY Times

I have said it for years. Kids need to play multiple sports when they’re kids. Concentrating all the stresses on specific areas year round is dangerous and is now manifesting itself in these premier players blowing out elbows as pros. I’m afraid it’ll get worse before it gets better because the horrid practice is still happening to kids under 10, and isn’t likely to get much better until the rec communities takes a hard stand. There are too many dads that are looking to relive some failed past glory through their kid and will stop at almost nothing to give their kid some perceived advantage.

And not to mention letting your kids become more well rounded individuals. But that is a social issue that I won’t begin to foray into here…

VOX, My belief is all the major baseball nerds and talking heads have never forgiven the Braves of the 90’s for not winning more World Series. They always touted how great the teams were and must have bet their kids’ college tuition money on the Braves with their bookies and still hold a grudge against Atlanta.

CL, I can think of nothing more tragic than the death of a child, especially those kids between 5 and 12 years of age. I have seen more EMS workers quit because of those deaths than any other reason…. T’is why we should treasure each and every second we have with them on this earth because we don’t know when we will ever see them again once they have gone to heaven.

The thing I always hate about doing taxes was spending hours trying to come up with the answers to a question only to find you fell short of actually qualifying for particular deduction.

It will never happen in my life time but their should just be a straight 10% tax across the board and be done with it. After all, if it is good enough for God, it should be good enough for the country.

Problem is, everyone wants a piece of the pie and by the time everyone else takes a slice, there is precious little for the actual wage earner.

What I hate most are :”fees:” They are just taxes you cannot deduct and a way for the pols to say they didn’t actually raise taxes when in truth they did.

    Stepping off my soapbox now…

Heck of a game last night, tense until the final out. Dano made two outstanding plays in the ninth to help preserve the win.

“This on a day his pitcher was even better, and Gattis knew that before the game even started.

“The first five [pitches] in the bullpen, it’s like I could have caught with my eyes closed,” Gattis said. “Sometimes you have guys who are rough warming up and then they get out there and it clicks. I remember a player (but not his position) who showed bunt a couple of times in his at-bat, drew the infield in, then swung and lobbed it somewhere into no man’s land to score one or two crucial runs. Funny how certain plays remain in one’s memory like that.

No question. Wondered why, with both Gattis and Doumit still on the bench, Fredi didn’t have a PR out there for the slow footed Laird… especially after the failed bunt. I can’t see Laird scoring from 2B on anything but a gapper. And after the failed bunt especially, you really needed some speed on the paths. Shoulda had a PR. Just shoulda.

In fact, the seemingly easy call to make would have been Schafer to pinch run, and Gattis to pinch hit. I’ll take my chances with the hottest bat out of 25 and the fleet footed Schafer at 2B. Instead, we had molasses and a guy who has 0 hits and only 2 successful sacs in his ML career. Not exactly playing the percentages there.

Funny about how a baseball team can shape up and come together as a whole each season. My ex-father-in-law, who was a huge Detroit Tiger fan was noted as saying “early days” whenever the Tigers would get off to a roaring (no pun intended, but still not a bad accident) start.

Lot’s of baseball to play and a lot more decision to be made before the Braves get to the meat of the season but you have to like where the Braves are headed.

The pitching so far has been stellar for the most part. Sure, a few bumps along the way but no one expects any team to go 162-0 for a season. It’s not high school ball they are playing. Anyway, still a few more strike outs than I would wish for but it is really nice to have Dan Uggla and BJ Upton stride up to the plate and already know they are going to strike out. I know BJ’s batting average is still only around .220 or so but it is headed in the right direction.

Moving CJ out of the 4 spot sure did him a world of good too. I’m of the belief that players over think things sometimes. They tend to change what-ever works for them to do something which is required of the traditional hitter in a certain slot in a batting order.

And Schlosser was pitching in his 4th inning, after not going more than 1 2/3rds inning all year, and not pitching at all in a week.
Just felt like Bobby at his worst….basically gave up the game. No starter getting ready to pitch if the game kept going. Pitcher in who hadn’t pitched in a week, expecting him to pitch til his arm fell off. Take him out after 3 scoreless innings, his confidence would be high (Isn’t it important for ALL 25 players to contribute, to feel part of the team?) Instead, he gets the loss hung on him, and won’t get to pitch for a week again….
I know, there is a game today, but you should try give your team a chance to win all the games, not have starters bat in the 8th, or the least used man in the bullpen pitch til the end of time…

I dunno, Ber. Gus had been stretched out as a starter during Spring Training. I thought he was OK going 4. And if you PH Doumit, then you have no emergency C since Gattis had already come in for Laird. Once you get to the 14th inning, and most of your bench and bullpen are burned, you don’t have many – if any – good options. No win situation for any manager IMO. Braves had earlier opportunities to score (JUp’s triple?) and failed. Similarly, had they made their defensive plays, it would all be moot as well. But that’s all just “shoulda, woulda, coulda”. The Braves fate was sealed when they whiffed 5 times in a row against Dice-K after he walked the first batter he faced.

And by the way, that walk was followed ONCE AGAIN by a failed bunt attempt. I said it the other day… gotta play the fundamentals right. Braves must work on bunting, They suck at it.

Amazingly, everyone knows the problem, situational hitting, keeping the ine moving, BUT! everyone wants to be the hero and make the lede on Sports Center or MLB tonight… Same song, different tune but the results continue to be the same.

Now, what should have been done? Minor is on his way this week, A started could have been warmed up. I can understand why Walden and Kimbrel would be held until the end.

Not using Domit? You have a guy you are afraid to use? Lots of teams only have two catchers. No catcher? Forfeit if it come to that but I’ll bet somebody could catch, heck, put Uggla back there, couldn’t be any worse….

Okay that one is behind us, like I said, I’m greedy, I want to win them all. Okay, move on, try to learn from it, give Dan a night off and let the Pastor play… Message sent….

If I were the Braves manager, I would also have the team spend some mandatory time before every game taking infield practice until the Braves figured out it is an important part of the game, just like hitting and pitching. Just saying….

Sounds as if source of the problem is in the Minor League. That’s the place to learn fundamentals, including bunting. If I was the ML manager, I’d have a rule engraved in stone that no one could come up to the big club until he had mastered bunting and fielding. Think that may get their attention down line? I’d hope so. And, yes, I know there are a million reasons some people get called up but that work had better at least be in progress.

I know I have been bashing the Braves for their sloppy field play, yet they continue to win. I think it bodes ill for them to escape time after time because it is going to catch up with them at the worse possible time.

Infield drills Fredi, Infield drills… That and bunting practice or at least send guys up who actually know the fundamentals of bunting. I can still bunt and I’m 65 years old and crippled. can’t run to first but I know how to lay down a bunt. It a’int rocket surgery!

I think Kimbrel will be okay now, he had to get that ugliness out of his system. he tends to be a little all over the place until his touch and feel return. Not like he is a grizzle vet. Worked out of a heck of a jam in the 9th, not completely of his making.

I know a thing or two about “catcher’s interference” my glove ended up on the pitcher’s mound, I had to check to make sure my hand was not still in it. Taught me real fast not to reach for the ball.

I expect Minor’s first start back to be a bit rocky too. Just the way of baseball, methinks…

That line drive off El Orso Blanco’s bat into the left field bleachers was a thing of beauty in the 10th wasn’t it?

How long did it take for Evan’s gopher to get out of Turner Field? Sounded like a homer when he hit the ball, just a wonder of if it had enough elevation. Jim Beecham used to hit them like that out of the Richmond ballpark back in the day…. And Brett Butler coaching thirdbase for the Fish…. I saw him play centerfield for the Richmond Braves when he was first coming up, One of the fastest guys I have ever seen. I still remember the shock when I learned he and Brook Jacolby had been traded to the Indians for Len Barker…. Oh the humanity… At least when JS made that trade to Texas for Texiera, we all thought the Braves were getting something. Well, actually they did… 5 years of mediocrity while the Rangers went to the World Series with the talent they acquired from the Bravos.

While it was disappointing to be on the short end of last night’s 1-0 loss to the Fish, that was one of the best pitched games I have ever viewed. Woody must wonder why he is always the guy in the barrel.

28 strike-outs, zero walks and a Madduxess type game as far as time goes. Over in a rapid 2 hours and 8 minutes. I know Fernadez is getting all the ink but one must wonder when Woods will start getting some recognition? Not as if he is chopped liver out there on the mound.

I guess unless you are throwing 99 mph, you are not really worthy of their time. To be sure,, Alex has my attention.

Now, let’s hope the Bravos can salt away the fish and send them packing until they meet again this week-end.

On Craig Kimbrel, when he came into the game last week against the Mets, I told Josie he would be all over the place and would likely get shelled. He was.

Two nights ago, I told her, he would be better but not to be surprised if he blew the save. He did but it was like a light switch being thrown when he struck out the last three batters he faced. Today, you could see he was all the way back.

Off day today, rest well guys…

While I like David Hale, I do not understand why the Braves would want to keep Minor down on the farm and give David another turn.

Hale has not pitched poorly and with a a little more offensive support, he would have a much better won/loss record.

Listening to Tom Glavin go on about how wins and losses are important on a pitcher’s resume’, I am incline to say they are only indicative of the type of team around a particular pitcher. A lot of good pitchers do not always have the benefit of being backed up by a team full of All-stars.

Alex Wood has been abandoned by his offense for the most part so he is a sub .500 pitcher, does that make him a bad pitcher?

For a pitcher to give up 2 runs in 6 innings, his resulting ERA will be a 3.00. No wonder ball players lose their hair or at least turn gray by age 35. A lot of good pitchers are punished by being tied to bad teams while the opposite is true of some guys who happen to play on teams loaded with talented defenses and offenses.

I think there are valid arguments on both sides of the “win/loss” debate. Yes, a pitcher’s record can certainly be affected by the team that’s around him. That said, The Marlins’ Jose Fernandez is the early NL Cy Young favorite, and can be a 20 game winner on a fairly mediocre Miami team. Tom Seaver was a 311 game winner and played for some pretty bad Mets teams. And while they certainly did have talent around them, I’d venture a guess and say that Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz were the #1 reason the Braves had their long 14 year division domination. Great pitchers can elevate a team. (Especially when there are 3 future HOF’s in the same rotation. 😉 )

I have to say, I am blown away by how good Alex Wood has been this year! I just didn’t see him being particularly special…and he may yet fall to earth(he almost has to, to some degree) but still…his motion looks much smoother this year…I wonder how long it will be before we find out how much credit Roger McDowell deserves for the starters this year. Saw that Harang was near the top, or the top guy in the last 2 years giving up 7 or more runs in a game.
I was not impressed by him the last few years he was in Cincy! Seemed to have no “stuff” now, he looks like a 25 year old , with a much better stuff. I mean, last year, the Mariners, who play in a pitchers park…he had a 5.76 ERA. Went tot he mutts, and had a 3.52 ERA for the last month of the year. Did he learn something there?

Ben Lindbergh of Baseball Prospectus: There are no analytical or scouting reasons to believe that Harang has re-invented himself at this late stage of his career. Ultimately, Harang has benefited from a low BABIP, high strand rate, and unsustainable level of success with runners in scoring position. Though his contributions to date should not be underestimated, there remains a good chance that the Braves will end up replacing Harang in the rotation before the season is out.

And that, folks, is why people should get out of their basements and actually watch a ballgame every now and then.

    V, exactumundo! (Blog first! 😛 )
There are players that figure things out, make changes, learn a new pitch…get in better shape.
Remember Darrell Evans? Slick fielding 3rd baseman , came up with the braves. I remembered him first with the Giants. Hit 41 homers at age 26, then didn’t hit more than 25 HR’s til he hit 30 at the age of 36…then, he went to the Tigers, and hit 16 HR’s in that old bandbox. For reasons completely unknown to me, I remember Angels pitcher Bobby Witt talking about hitters on the Roy Firestone show on ESPN, and how Evans tried to hit a homer every time up, and how he was a pretty easy out(Yes, I remember this from the 80s, but lost my keys the other day , and even when I found them, didn’t remember putting them where I found them 😦 ) Well….at the age of 38, he hit….40 HR’s to lead the league. hit 29 at the age of 39, and 34 at the age of 40! (And played in 150 games)
Did he start using roids? Not likely. Might have started working out more, got somewhat stronger , but most likely…found a way to get quicker to the ball like David Ortiz has…shortened the swing, something. I know I have been taking about a hitter, but some pitchers have gotten better with age/experience…..

Super article indeed. And it’s about the first I’ve seen that indicates that this great start is NOT an aberration. I believe in this bunch. I’ve said from day 1 I believe Teheran is an ace, and I’ve said from day 1 that Wood is not just some guy in the bottom of the rotation. he reminds me so much of the ChiSox Chris Sale, a perennial Cy Young vote-getter. Granted, nobody imagined Harang would be this good, nor Hale for that matter. But they are, and that’s reality.

And now that BJ is actually seeing the ball again, and that Danny is hitting alot of loud outs that have to start falling in at some point, this team has big time potential to win alot of games.

At the very least, they’re a ton of fun to watch.

Anyone else see the game where BJ flat out missed a fly ball pop up? It was the day before he started wearing glasses…. I think it is what convinced him that it was time to put aside the vanity and don his Spike Lee’s

It is encouraging when the outs he and Uggla make are of the loud at-em balls as opposed to the weak ground balls to the short stop or in the catcher’s glove after a third strike. You are right Raisins, sometimes it is just bad luck but they do fall in. I also notice the same thing when opposing batters crush a ball that is snagged by Freddie or Chris Johnson.

I always take that as a sign a pitcher is tiring and leaving balls up in the zone.

I said before the season began, I would be happy if the Braves could make it through this stretch sans Minor and Gavin Floyd with a .500 record, I would be pretty happy with that. Looks like they have exceeded that expectation by quite a bit. Also, we should remember this was supposed to be the “easy” part of their schedule. There are some pretty good clubs looming ahead for the Braves in May.

That will likely cause the staff ERA to rise but perhaps the Braves bats can heat up a bit too. Did we really think Heyward would be 0 fer April? I still think there is a physical problem we don’t know about. Hard to take that Gold Glove out of right field but now is the time to do it and let him heal.

One last thing, doesn’t Walden look impressive now that he is healthy? yes, I know it has taken a while but you get the feeling that if Kimbrel falters, there is a guy who the Braves can go to carry the water for a spell.

Woods was due for a fall, just the way the baseball goods go about their business, He made some good pitches but some not so good and when Stanton took him deep the other way, well, you just saw the wind come out of his sails and the game was over.

And why is JHey playing every day? I know he’s the right fielder,(and one of the best of those) but…. in basically 1/6th of the season, he’s hitting .206. .095 against lefties. Sure is a shame Schafer doesn’t bat right handed, but still, I bet he could hit say….190 against lefties. I know also you want to get him going…well, a day or two off might get him going…but having he and BJ at the top of the lineup hitting .around .210…means it’s kind hard to get the offense rolling.

On last night’s Braves broadcast, Joe Simpson said the Braves were suspicious that the Marlins had someone stealing signs. Not sure if the did or not, it appeared that they sure knew what was coming and did not miss any pitch up, and there were plenty of those. Just too many things for it to be purely coincidental.

I cannot say one way or the other, it did look like the Braves pitchers were throwing batting practice for the Marlin hitters. My biggest beef however was the Braves continued insistence to ignore the obvious. The stink when it come to situational hitting. It seems like everyone want to be the hero and hit the walk off homer. They have forgotten (or never learned) get em on, get em over and get em in….

Guys, I’m kind of at a loss for words. Losing 6 in a row will do that methinks. At least Denny Hamlin won Sunday and I picked up a nice Snap On 1/2 inch drive 18 volt impact wrench set for $35 bucks… So, the week end was not a total bust. Close but well, you know!

I was thinking after 5 in a row, well…at least getting it out of their system earlier in the year…after 6, yet another game of only scoring 1 run….blech! At least the Nats have also stunk of late…It’s a team like the Marlins that scares me(perhaps the Mutts too) they have to feel anyone can win at this point…

well…7 losses in a row…..Freddi’s idea of shaking things up…is to have the pitcher bat 8th,….ummm, ok…How about having BJ sit on the bench and play schafer against a rightie? Nah…his 2 HR’s and 6 RBI’s have to be in there. Doumit, in left, Schafer in CF, Justin in RF, wouldn’t that be shaking things up?

    Meanwhile, it’s Uggla that’s been benched, only don’t say he’s been benched…from ESPN….
With Pena in the lineup, Dan Uggla was on the bench for the third time in four games. Coming off the worst season of his career, Uggla is hitting just .190 with two homers and 10 RBIs.

Gonzalez said he was merely looking for the best matchups — Uggla hits right-handed, Pena is a switch-hitter — and the move was not permanent. In fact, the manager took umbrage when a reporter used the word “benched” and said later that Uggla will likely be back in the lineup on Tuesday.

“He’s not benched,” Gonzalez snapped. “He’s just not playing today.”

But Uggla, one of the team’s most highly paid players, was clearly upset by his lack of playing time.

“Nobody tells me anything anymore,” he said. “I come to the field and do my job. That’s it.”

I don’t know if Fredi has lost his clubhouse, but he’s lost me. Only an idiot bats the pitcher 8th. If your logic is to have someone on base when Heyward comes to bat, then take Heyward ot of the leadoff spot…. which, by the way, is historically one of his worst spots to bat.

    Like

  272. 291 Vox O'Raison May 6, 2014 at 8:40 am

Heyward is a career .257 hitter trending downward since his most productive year in 2012 when he his .269 (that isn’t exactly Tony Gwynn) with 27 HR and 82 RBI. At that point we all exalted him as the next great Brave and too good to be affordable. BTW – he achieved those numbers in the #3 slot for over half the season (83 games) and did not bat leadoff in a single game.

For what it’s worth, Dan Uggla hit 22 HR and drove in 55 runs last season and we vilify him as the worst hitter ever. Yet Jason gets exalted with 27/82? Doesn’t seem equitable to me.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not defending Uggla. And I’ll gratefully take 27 HR and 82 RBI again from Jason. But I’m having a hard time with “shaking up the order” but leaving Jason at leadoff. If you want to use Jason correctly, put him in a RBI position. He’s a run producer. Duh!

Did you know that Jason has 0 official career AB’s as a cleanup hitter? It’s true. But Fredi keeps sticking him out there at leadoff.

I’ll tell ya, I just cant get past this “pitcher batting 8th” thing. It’s Fredi’s way of trying to outthink the room. Well, there’s a reason pitcher’s bat last… they can’t hit.

Now try to follow this logic. Fredi takes Uggla out again (3 of the last 4 games) to insert Pena – whom I like alot – to get more production out of 2B. Then he bats him 9th. That, folks, is just flat out dumb.

If you want to “shake up the lineup”, put players in position to succeed. Don’t get cute just to look like your doing something.

And here’s another rant… Gattis is one of your best run producers with 7 HR and 15 RBI thus far in only 26 of the team’s 31 games, some of those appearances being as a PH. He’s sitting 2 games every week. Why? If you want to “rest” him, then do it in July and August when it’s sweltering in Atlanta. Not in April and May when it’s comfortable. And the guy can’t possibly be tired yet!

I’ve given Fredi the benefit of the doubt and held my tongue on many items because the team was holding 1st place, so I figured the end was justifying the means. But this morning they sit in 2nd with a 7 game losing streak. And while it’s true that Fredi can’t swing the bats himself, he can give his players the best chance to succeed. I don’t think he’s doing that. I’m about over it.

How about work the players’ on bunting… on situational hitting… on moving a guy over? They can’t execute. And it’s up and down the lineup. That falls at the coaches’ and manager’s feet. I don’t think they could drop a bunt off a tee.

And this is a young team. What are you setting them up for? What are you molding them to be?

And while I’m spewing venom, I’ll spew some Frank’s way too. You’ve built a team full of run producers, but no table setters. How can Freeman and JUp drive guys in when nobody is on base?

Well, the rift has already begun between the management and Uggla. You can sense it. Dan’s too much a professional to make it public, but you can sense it. It’s as if he’s being singled out as the root of the team’s offensive woes, yet he’s not batted higher than 6th in a single game.

The root of the team’s offensive problems lies at the top of the order where they aren’t getting on base. The leadoff guy is batting .223 with 29 K’s, and the #2 guy is batting .207 with 35 K’s. But Fredi sits the #6 batter and moves the pitcher to 8th.

    Yeah, that’ll do it.

Thanks guys for taking up the slack. To be honest, I saw it coming even when we were in first place because as we all know, you cannot go an entire season relying on a bunch of young pitchers carrying your team every night. Alex Woods must be to the point he believes he has to pitch a perfect game in order to win.

Okay, no use in losing sleep over it, it is not going to change anything. That is only going to happen with a change in management. Unfortunately, the Braves don’t have enough wiggle room to eat contracts like Uggla and Upton’s.

After all, it is not like they are waiting for someone to come back off the DL to give the team a boost. They have who they have….

I have 2 final thoughts not involving my current disdain for our manager. Bobby Cox used to say that June 1 was his day to assess his lineup. Anything earlier was premature. Well, he’s a HOF’er, so I’ll take his word for it. But after June 1…

#1- The money is already spent. I have never understood the argument that a guy’s contract dictated his playing time. The money’s already spent whether he plays 162 games or 62 games. In my mind, the idea is to put a winning team on the field. Otherwise, what’s the point?

But I also get that there is more to the dynamic. If you sit BJ, how does he react? And how does that affect the clubhouse? We already know how Dan will react. Fredi floated that balloon during last year’s playoffs. And then he had several months to let it die down. Kind of a “hit and run”, so to speak. But during the season? Not sure Fredi has the guts for it.

#2- Tommy La Stella is batting .320 with a .376 OBP at AAA Gwinnett. He has 10 walks vs. 8 K’s. He’s batting a mind-blowing .393 when behind in the count. He’s averaging 1 K per 14.13 plate appearances.

La Stella: “My approach with two strikes centers around putting the ball in play. I’m putting the barrel on the ball and I’m ready for any pitch. Before two strikes, I’m looking for a certain pitch or a certain zone. With two strikes, I’m reacting to what I see. There’s something about having two strikes that makes me focus better. You lay off closer pitches with two strikes or when you’re behind the count.”

That’s a novel approach, eh? He has a .327 career minor league AVG and hit .343 in 81 games for AA Mississippi last season. And get this one… he’s got a career OBP of .408. But he has very little power. He’s the anti-Uggla at the plate.

It should also be noted that he’s NOT a defensive upgrade at 2B. Not saying he’s Robert Duran, (google it; check out his nickname), but neither is he Roberto Alomar.

Still, there is a broad belief that La Stella could be called up soon to become the regular 2B. I like Dan alot. I really do. Nobody grinds more than he does, and he doesn’t make excuses. But if on June 1 he’s still hitting below the Mendoza line, I’d make the change.

Last post, and I’ll step off the soapbox. Given recent trends and regressions/improvements… and given players’ strengths and weaknesses, here’s MY lineup today:

1- BJ, R (aforementioned OBP trend plus SB threat)
2- Simba, R (makes contact and doesn’t strike out; good speed)
3- Freeman, L (he’s the best run producer on the team)
4- JUp, R (run producer; prototypical cleanup hitter)
5- JHey, L (see above rant)
6- Gatt, R (said it earlier)
    7- CJohn, R
8- Uggla, R (perhaps insert La Stella here in the near future?)
    9- Pitcher (duh)

Given the lack of LH’s in the lineup, it’s hard to do the R-L-R-L thing. Did I mention that La Stella bats LH?

Also, notice that I said my lineup today. I do have the license to change it as trends and slumps occur.

And I would never, EVER bat the pitcher 8th. That’s just dumb.

1- JHeyd, RF (JHey has proven he’s not not a leadoff hitter; K’s too much.)
2- JUp, LF (That’s it. Take a prolific bopper and put him in the role of moving a guy over. Oh, and he has the most K’s on the team.)
3- Free, 1B (Fredi gets 1 out of 9 right. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.)
4- CJohn, 3B (Batting cleanup has been disastrous for contact guy CJohn this season.)
5- Laird, C (Where the #3!! is Gatt?)
6- BUpton, CF (The guy was heating up a little, so let’s drop him to 6th with Uggla behind him. BJ won’t get anything to hit.)
7- Uggla, 2B (Uh, he’s a mental mess now. Nice going Fredi.)
8- Floyd, P (Dumb. Just Dumb.)
9- Simmons, SS (Prototypical #2 guy batting 9th. Brilliant.)

Morning folks.. Ah, my will to live has been restored….

A couple of notes: First, Dan made a heck of a play tonight, to bad his foot slipped and he was unable to make the throw, would have been a web gem for sure. as it was, it is pretty much like a loud out or a 500 foot foul ball.

I thought the failed squeeze play in the eight was idiotic. What, Laid can’t hit a fly ball? Freedie, bless his heart, is one of the slowest runners on the team. A safety squeeze maybe but that was just not the time or place for a squeeze play. Just a really dumb move. Luckily, Kimbrel is Kimbrel again.

TIme to move J-Hey down in the order. If you are going to bat the pitcher eight, let J-Hey bat second. I would let Pena/Pastornicky/BJ Upton lead off. BJ is seeing the ball and able to take walks again. Just saying… but what do we know, we are just a bunch of know nothing bloggers, right?

Hate his surroundings etc. We would all love to see him do well but I think everyone is at a loss as to what that will take at this point beyond new surroundings and no one will trade for him and take on his contract when they are just waiting to claim him after he clears waivers and pay him minimum.

Yes it is. And I fear that given that he has become the popular scapegoat, he’s gotta go. Yes, he’s a grinder; he’s a great teammate, even in the face of alot of adversity. ALOT of adversity. But at some point you have to pull the plug. And if you begin to get something out of 2B, you can be a little more patient with CF.

Is it time to call up La Stella? I’m not sure. I think Pastor can play; I know he can hit. He’d be a decent leadoff candidate. I still like Pena as super-sub. Actually, both Pena and Pastor are super-subs. I suppose you could use them in a pseudo-platoon situation, even though Pena is a SH. That might not be a bad deal, and would prevent either from being exposed by everyday play.

But what of Uggla? If he can’t hit with regular AB’s, is there any reason to think he could come off the bench in a tight game and deliver a big hit? Not really confident in that. And he certainly would not be a defensive replacement.

Its a tough call. not sure Fredi has enough Bobby influence to wait ’til June 1 to do anything. He has shown lesser patience already. I do not expect to see Uggla in tonight’s lineup.

I hate what I’m seeing in very poor management and judgement. The Braves clubhouse has always been known as a good one, a happy one. And a lot of the credit for that went to Bobby Cox’s carved-in-stone rule of keeping things private. Never discussed or intimated to press, et al.

Seems that Gonzalez is taking a personal vendetta of some sort out on Dan. Did Dan have the guts to tell the “boss” that he wasn’t managing well, or something close to it?

If it is personal, then Gonzalez is not management material. I’m sure Cox, Wren and even Sherholtz are watching.

Okay – what if? What if Freddi is fired? (I’d be surprised but let’s play the game). What do you think would happen then?

Sun was right in our eyes for about 1 1/2 hours, 4 plus innings…note to self(and everyone else) 2nd deck, behind right-field foul pole…not the place to be , at least in May! 😉 But, temps dropped soon after the sun went behind the stadium, very pleasant! Also, we are clearly good luck charms 😉 So glad they finally won! No thanks the Freddi, IMHO.
Doumit pinch hits, but Gattis doesn’t? Now…if we hear he’s hurt, or something else in place…then clearly not Freddi’s fault. But, as V has already pointed out, Gattis has had a crazy amount of rest already.
I can see (to a degree) that Laird, what with more experience and all, made sense to catch Gavin Floyd (by the way, kinda hard to tell how good he was from so far away, what did you all think?) but…when Laird was told to bunt…how often does a part time catcher bunt? Again, should folks be able to bunt? sure…but as I was saying to the guys I went to the game with….pitchers have to practice , pitch fairly often, right? Hitters have to hit a lot for timing…how often do the braves practice bunting? Spring training was a long time ago…
Call me crazy, but I would have hit Gattis for Doumit, or Laird…but, he sat on the bench instead….did not feel like a game that would be won by the bravos….thank goodness for Chris Johnson’s huge hit! And Kimbrel.

Last night, I knew it was over after the Cards scored their third run. Two reasons, Not scoring even when they should and knowing they are facing Wainwright and knowing they won’t score more than a couple off him on a good day.

Jordan Schafer…on pace to get 88 ab’s. I know, not hitting…well, kinda hard to hit when you don’t, ya know? And of course with BJ Upton hitting .213 against right handed pitching, you can’t expect to get 1-2 starts a week.
JHey is 4 for 31 against lefties(.129) So you can’t expect him to ride the bench and let Schafer play 1-2 games a week either. in a small sample , Uggla is hitting .250 against lefties(Has he been sitting when lefties are pitching? 16 AB’s the whole year) .172 against righties, so you can’t expect Pena or Pastor to play against righties til he works things out(IF)
A weird team…Doumit had at least 484 AB;s the last 2 seasons. Now, he’s the 3rd string catcher, and backup 1st baseman to the best player on the club. So, he’s basically the left handed pinch hitter. New league, new role.
Do we really need him? Nice to have a 3rd catcher…but seems he might be worth something more to another team…what would be get back for him though? Likely nothing…oh well. Two back up infielders, one, The Pastor, is on pace for…get this…49 AB’s this year!!!! Oh well, at 24 years of age, you have to expect that…You know….has anyone had the thought that the manager of the braves has regressed, and really isn’t that good at managing 25 players?

The Braves are in a real bind over Uggla, and I hate it. Personally, I like Uggla alot. But as Bowman has described the Braves FOT’s (front office types), I have also lost my patience with him.

Yes, he’s a great guy with exceptional character. Yes, he’s a tremendous teammate. Yes, he works harder than anyone else on the team. Yes, there is no one else on the planet that has a greater desire to end the skid than Dan himself. But those qualities aren’t helping the team score runs… and they need runs. And he’s being paid an obscene amount of money to generate runs.

And as even Stevie Wonder could see, his salary has tied the hands of the FOT’s. He’s completely untradeable, and how can you release $24M? How can you just show a guy the door and continue to write a check to him for $1M a month. Think about that… $1M a month.

I cannot fathom that kind of money, and the Braves have been out in a position to just effectively set fire to $1M a month.

But the “die is cast” already. They’re either gonna pay it to a guy taking up a valuable spot in the lineup, or they’re gonna pay it – plus the league minimum – to give a kid a shot at making a difference.

Now… the other wrench in the mucked up 2B works is that the team is in the Pastornicky camp. No shots at La Stella, but they feel Pastor deserves his own shot. And I can’t really disagree. But you can’t keep Danny around on the bench or in the clubhouse. It’s just not feasible. So it’s play him and pay him, or release him and pay him.

If it were me, I’d release him and give Pastornicky his shot. Id leave La Stella at AAA for another year, and call up Terdo for the bench.

It’ll come to pass, too. And I’ll get another prophet star. 🙂

Why are the Braves losing patience with Uggla while seemingly giving BJ a pass? Here are 5 key differences:

    1) Dan is 34; BJ is 29. That’s huge in baseball years.

    2) Dan is no Brooks Robinson and plays only one position, 2B. His defense can best be described as tolerable. BJ plays a premium defensive position well, and has great speed on the basepaths. He can help the team in other ways even if he’s not hitting.

    3) Not only has Dan’s hitting in general dropped off the table, his power has disappeared. In the past couple of years, even when hitting near the Mendoza line, he was still running into a few fastballs and smashing at least 20 HR’s. In 2014, his power has virtually disappeared. His SLG is a paltry .272. Let’s put that in perspective – Rafael Belliard had a career SLG of .259. BJ’s overall offensive stats are up across the board from last season’s debacle, and by all accounts he’s improved his overall approach at the plate. And he already has 7 SB’s without the rules allowing him to steal 1B.

    4) Maybe the most important difference: the Chipper factor. Chipper’s comments regarding Dan are that he looks great in “flips” and in the cage, but has the “Andruw syndrome” in games. Chipper says he can’t stop spinning on his front and trying to hook everything around the LF pole. And he says he has a loop in his swing which makes it very difficult to meet the ball cleanly. Ouch. As to BJ, Chipper says he’s cleaned up the hitches in his swing and has corrected his bat path. Chipper says he believes BJ’s results will soon begin to reflect the improvements he’s made as he regains his timing. To summarize, Chipper says Dan is toast; BJ shows promise.

    5) BJ’s brother Justin plays LF; Dan’s brother Mike is… who knows?

OK.. that last one really didn’t matter, but I needed a 5th item to make it look really complete.

So, how good can he be in game situations after sitting on the bench for almost 6 weeks?
FG sure puts his players in a position to succeed.

    2nite’s stupid lineup:

    1- JHey, RF
2- JUp, LF (Stupid! The guy hits 1100 ft HR’s and Fredi has him in a spot to make contact and move runners over.)
    3- Free, 1B
    4- Gatt, C
    5- CJohn, 3B
    6- BJ, CF
    7- Simba, SS
8- Teheran, P (Pure stupid at its finest.)
9- Pena, 2B (He’s in the lineup to make a difference, but Fredi has him batting last. Stupid.)

    My lineup would be:

    1- JHey, RF (L)
    2- Simba, SS (R)
    3- Free, 1B (L)
    4- JUp, LF (R)
    5- Gatt, C (R)
    6- Pena, 2B (S)
    7- CJohn, 3B (R)
    8- BJ, CF (R)
9- Teheran, P (Who cares? He’s the pitcher properly batting last.)

Gil, true….except, FG thinks Gattis is a delicate rose, and needs a ton of rest, on top of the off days. And…the team hasn’t been hitting, why not, as you say, Pena can play 3rd, why not have him play one day for CJ when I righty was on the hill, and have Pena, who switch hits, play? And keep sharp?
Meanwhile, as V said…stupid lineup. 24 Y.O. Tyler Pasternicky, is once again riding the bench. Still on pace for 49 AB’s.Not saying Pena shouldn’t play, but he’s hitting .229…nothing FG is doing is making much sense right now…

V was wondering why JHey was leading off…darned good question. Yes, he started to hit…last year….leading off. Hey FG, it’s 2014…not 2013. In 129 AB’s…he’s hitting .209. “Slugging” .310.
I don’t know if FG is familiar with stats, but I have looked at some of his stats….He’s “hitting” .183 with no runners on. With runners on? .278!
    But…keep him hitting…1st. 😦
Ok, if FG wants to continue with a 9th hitter being a hitter…how about…
    Simmons 1st
    JHey 2nd
    J Up 3rd
    FF 4th
    Gattis 5th
    CJ 6th
    BJ 7th
    Pitcher 8th
    Pena 9th
This way, 3 times a night, JHey will be batting with 2 real hitters in front of him, (in theory)getting on base, vs. 3 times a night, Pitcher,(and perhaps a PH time) then Pena. No matter what you do, it’s a right handed hitter heavy lineup.

I don’t really have a problem with Wood in the pen right now. I’m thinking they are going to let Harang hang around a bit longer to see if he i for real and then have one heck of a fire sale for a slightly used starter. Must be that whole “pitcher batting 8th” thing. Yep, that’s gotta be it. Maybe it’s the “let’s rest strapping young Gattis in a 70 degree environment even though he’s crushing the ball” tactic. Yeah… Laird really tore the cover off the ball last night. Or it could be the “let’s look at our whole lineup of power hitters and take the one guy that isn’t and bat him cleanup” idea.

Here’s one: let’s bench the moron manager and get someone who has a clue about crafting a lineup.

I’m refraining from commenting lately because I really can’t have much positive to say as long as our manager continues to look foolish while trying to out-think the room. I am right on the edge of starting the Terry Pendleton for Manager campaign… 😡

Good morning folks, I did stay up for the game last night. Paying for it this AM though. To be honest, it was an error by Freddie Freeman that undid all the good work done by Gavin Floyd last evening. That and instant replay that showed, maybe. BJ being out at third on a steal attempt. Talk about a momentum swing…

Then again, so many guys trying to hit the ball 500 feet and pulling off the ball… Making Lincicum look like Cy Young… Very frustrating. I’m beginning to believe that Terry P was not really at fault when it came to the Braves hitting woes. It has always been like this…

Cannot completely disagree on your assessment of your line up either. I’m beginning to believe that second base has some type of curse on it for the Braves where normally sure handed players go to lose the handle on baseballs.

Coming into last night’s game, Lincecum had an ERA over 5 and the 2nd worst AVG against at .329… that’s almost 1 hit per 3 batters. If you flip the order over just 4 times, that should translate into 12 hits. The Braves got 2. Ridiculous…

V, I too foolishly watched the game. Lincecum had a 5.55 ERA coming into the game….would probably be in the bullpen on any other team. They said last night, he hadn’t pitched into the 7th in any game this year, almost got through the 8th against the braves. 13 and 2/3rds innings against the bravos, he has given up 2 runs…
And I was stunned(not sure why, par for the course of late) to see Laird back in there. I am sure FG’s though process is he helped Floyd the last start..and why not make Gattis feel like he doesn’t have total confidence in him?
And guess what? Weds is a day game, another prime time to bench Gattis! 😦
Now, if there is some health issue, they ought to tell us…cuz FG is looking brain dead right about now….At least have Doumit who is starting to heat up a bit, bat left handed against a righty, instead of Laird(who shouldn’t have been playing , but I guess you can’t have too many guys hitting .200 or under in the lineup)…geez…..

I might as well throw a little more kerosene on the fire. Freddie has been a little too free with his comments about players when they should have been kept quiet. Jordan Schafer is the latest example.

When a player goes to his manager to discuss an issue, he does not really expect for those issues to become common knowledge, otherwise, he would just vent to the press himself.

So, it is beginning to look like other teams’ pitchers are circling their calendars for when the Braves will come to town so they can fatten their stats at the Braves expense.

Need more strike outs on your resume’? No problem…

Per DOB: Fredi Gonzalez isn’t committing long-term to batting the pitcher eighth and is the first to concede the strategy hasn’t had much in the way of direct impact on games since he began using it a week ago.

“It’s kind of helped us a couple of times,” Gonzalez said. “Like I said a couple of years ago, it doesn’t really make my toes tingle. But sometimes, you know, do something a little different. It’s better than to keep doing the same thing over and over again.”

Over and over again? Like continue to leadoff with Heyward, who is batting .206 with 34 K’s? I think he’s a little selective in his doing “something a little different”, don’t you?

Change just for the sake of change, with no specific purpose, is merely grasping at straws. It’s a sign that you are clueless and desperate. It’s the hope that something will just happen without you actually doing anything active to enable it. Passive leadership. Just what a young team needs.

Raisins, you may have hit the nail on the head when you say “young team”… Veterans don’t really need a manager but the young guys do until they learn to play the game the right way. A lot of the Braves who make up the team don’t know any other way than what they are seeing right now.

The only real vets are Laird and Uggla, who is about to be exiled…

    Misery breeds discontent.

Yes, it is awful when a kid who has such enthusiasm for the game as Fernandez goes down.

Lead off hitter, try the Pastor, try Schafer, let Heyward hit down in the order and yes, stop using CJ in the four hold, it messes with his head because he thinks he has to be a power hitter. He is very happy in the 6 and 7 hole if you ask me.

You know, I mentioned Schafer a little earlier, but the fact is he hasn’t been very good this year… and really post-ASB last year. Check this out:

    1st Half 2013: .312 / .399 / .464
    2nd Half 2013: .170 / .248 / .208
    so far 2014: .143 / .182 / .238

That’s Ugg-ly, folks. So the question is this… are his numbers the result of little playing time, or is his playing time the result of putrid production? Now understand, I’m not trying to defend Fredi in any way, shape or form. But Schafer hasn’t exactly inspired confidence that he can give you anything that you aren’t getting from… say Dan Uggla. And Uggla’s days in the ATL are numbered. I wonder if Schafer’s might be also?

    .308 / .346 / .418 w/ , 2 HR’s, 10 2B’s, 19 RBI, 7 SB’s

Oh, he bats SH and plays all 3 OF spots well.

I’m not sure FG knows the difference between “out of the box” and “out of your mind”. And I absolutely hate what he’s doing to Dan! One thing for sure: it is no longer a “Bobby Cox-grade clubhouse.” Wonder what Cox is thinking about all of this?? And Chipper? I’d think it is pretty certain that his cellphone is busy.

Raisins, you realize Schafer has been inserted in the line up only against the toughest pitchers in the league. You cannot really blame a guy when he hasn’t had the same opportunity to hit against the lesser talent.

Play him everyday for two weeks and then reassess. I’ll bet his numbers improve.

From the FG talkin’ about Schafer story….
Making Schafer’s situation all the more difficult is the fact that his three starts came against hard throwers – the Mets’ Zack Wheeler on April 9, when Schafer was battling flu symptoms, and the Marlins’ Nathan Eovaldi on April 23 and Jose Fernandez on April 29. He went 0-for-3 in each of those games….

    then the genius said….
“And I told him, you being the fourth outfielder, or a utility infielder or a backup catcher, those are the guys you draw – you draw the Fernandezes, the (Adam) Wainwrights … that’s the guys you draw. As a fourth outfielder, you’re going to get the tough draws.”

Really? I have heard of so-so teams, back in the day giving players the day off because of a knuckleballer, or Nolan Ryan…but today? You are going to give JHey or BJ a day off cuz a great pitcher is on the mound?
Putting your players in the best situations to succeed….

and Douglas Dascenzo made a horrible decision to send JHey home…and somehow it worked out beautifully. Can’t believe Posey didn’t argue….at all…looked from one angle that he did lightly touch JHey, but hey…whatever. A lot of runs scored after that.
Shouldn’t surprise anyone that the home plate ump screwed that up, he clearly called BJ out twice on pitches way out of the strikezone….

Amazing that Brandon Hicks has 7 HR’s for the Giants, playing in that yard…

Well, I read yesterday that Fredi intends to give Pastornicky the majority of the playing time for the foreseeable future. He likes Ramiro more in his traditional utility role. (Translation: When a reserve plays every day, his flaws are exposed and his performance suffers. That’s why a reserve is a reserve, otherwise he would win an everyday job.) But the evidence is overwhelming that Uggla is done in Atlanta. Might as well close that conversation. Now the only question regarding 2B is whether Pastor can hold onto the job, else La Stella will get his callup. It is not out of the realm of possibility that Frank is trying to acquire a new 2B. That would explain why Uggla is still occupying a roster spot… because that’s the only thing he’s doing now. He’s keeping the spot warm for someone else to take. If Frank were actually actively seeking a new 2B (like he sought out McLouth about this time a few seasons ago) then it would make no sense to call up a AAA guy for a few days just to send him back.

It will all probably all shake out in the next week or so…

Once again, the pitching was outstanding. Where would the Braves be without it?

But maybe the best performance was out of Ervin Santana who took a group of Braves to a cancer center in San Francisco yesterday. When asked why Braves players are visiting a San Francisco hospital, Ervin answered, “We are Major League baseball players.”

The guy is 100% class, and a great influence on our young pitchers, especially Julio Teheran. Perhaps that will be his greatest contribution this season.

    Great observation Raisins…

How long did it take for Evan to leg out his triple? As he hit it, I fell asleep, when I woke up, he had just made it to the bad… or maybe it was a replay but it took awhile. Of course, the record might still belong to Brian McCann…

On Schafer, you’d have to be be a pretty great fourth outfielder to have a good batting average in those situations. Bobby was a genius at making sure guys could stay sharp, giving everyone playing time, not just when the regulars wanted to duck out.

Last night was the second time Dascenso has sent a guy who was out by 10 feet. I thought he was supposed to be smarter than Snitker. J-Hey was lucky Posey was confused as to where to set up. It gave J-Hey a place to slide and he did avoid the tag because Posey knew he had missed him when he tried to tag him again.

Bobby was universally panned as being a “golly gee” and “rah rah” kind of guy. It angered many and was a huge source of the anti-Bobby sentiment that dogged him. But the fact is that he was a master as to what to give to the press and what to keep in the clubhouse. And he didn’t care one iota what was said or printed about him. Nobody did it better, and it made him a HOF manager. Fredi is an oaf when it comes to the media. Bobby’s players would have taken a bullet for him. Fredi’s have no such allegiance.

Here’s how bad it is for Fredi… he cannot even make a decision. First, he himself said he doesn’t really believe in the pitcher batting 8th, and that it won’t be long term (then why do it at all?!?), then he announces that the rotation will go to 6 starters, only to backtrack and say he changed his mind. What is up with him? Early onset dementia?

And somewhere in with the pitching news today he was quoted as saying that Pastornicky is the new starting 2B. Well, that’s OK, in a sense. At least everyone knows what’s what. My question is this: Why then is Dan still on the roster? He isn’t a bench guy.

I am so disappointed at the continued ham-handed handling of the media, rotation, lineup and roster. I’m not sure I have ever seen such a complete bungled mess…

Me either. Tommy La Stella is the guy they’ve been talking about since last year. He’s the next in line.

Bowman: The Braves will utilize a six-man rotation at least through next week. Manager Fredi Gonzalez doesn’t like the idea, but the team feels it has little choice with six starting options that are throwing so well. The manager did concede that the six-man grouping might help later in the year by limiting the workload on Alex Wood and Gavin Floyd.

So Fredi doesn’t like it, but will do it because he doesn’t have a choice? Wait… he’s the flippin’ manager!! He’s has all the choices!! AAARRGGHH!!

You want to limit the innings of Wood (I don’t like that idea) and Floyd (semi-understandable), then simply piggyback their starts and keep everyone else in their routine. The single most effective way to harm a pitcher and his performance is to force him into inconsistent routines and rest. Fredi is an idiot!!

So, we head into St. Louis like a whipped puppy with our tail tucked between our legs hoping we might figure out a way to break out of the offensive malaise that has gripped the entire team. At least we aren’t facing Wainright or Wokka, although it’ll probably look like it. Not being a guy who believes in mass coincidence, seems to me when a whole team is affected in a similar way, there ought to be a singular source to point toward as a cause.

    Not naming any names.

I do find it interesting, though, that a popular guy who was a leader in the clubhouse, even when not producing on the field, was castigated to the bench in a very clumsy manor, and the team as a whole suddenly looks as if it has a murky sense of purpose. Little energy, little enthusiasm. Seems as if the “team” doesn’t feel like a team. I think someone has lost the respect of their team.

MLBTR: The Braves have acquired infielder Osvaldo Martinez in a trade with the Dodgers and assigned him to the Gwinnett Braves, who announced the move. Martinez, 26, played in parts of the 2010 and 2011 seasons with the Marlins, hitting a combined .258/.300/.348 in 71 plate appearances. This season, he had been hitting .176/.242/.269 with Double-A Chattanooga, where he played mostly shortstop and third base.

Could this be a precursor to a La Stella callup? THe Braves have Phil Gosselin at 3B right now at Gwinnett. Gosselin was Gwinnett’s 2B last season. Hmmm…

    Don’t forget the other black hole, offensively….RF. JHey. 3 extra base hits in 53 AB’s in May…7 EBH’s for the year. .215 BA after 1/4th of a season.319 OBP, slugging .316. He’s 24.
Remember when Frenchy was 24? in the middle of what we all agreed was a terrible season, he was sent down, for a whole 3 games…(just looked it up) For that year, 2009…Frenchy hit 11 HR’s 71 RBI’s, and a .239 BA. .294 OBP. Slugging .359.
So….what is the difference? Why don’t we hear calls of JHey needing to be sent down? Both were/are very good fielders…both at 24 had been in the majors for several years.
Only difference I can see is JHey is rarely coming up with runners on(get this , JHey is hitting .193 with no one on base, in 44 AB’s with runners on, .273! Keep him leading off Sparky!) and therefore isn’t constantly breaking fans hearts…but, to be honest, he has been terrible at the plate this year.
    He his .254 last year, after a slow start….227 pre all star break, .305 after(n 131 AB’s)
JHey was so built up,(I remember all the baseball tonight folks being so excited about him, how they would always remember his first homer, how hard he hit the ball, etc) hard to live up the the hype. and hey, he’s still only 24(which was the argument used by Frenchy supporters) but…other than looking better grounding out to the 2nd baseman, and walking more than Frenchy….how is he not catching any heat for not producing????

He is still considered an elite player and has an affordable and short term deal. That makes him very attractive on the trade market. I say trade him now before the other GM’s figure out that he is exactly what the back of his baseball card says he is, a .250 hitter with moderate (20 HR) power, and while you can still can get more than Ryan Church for him.

After Braun made it close in the top of the eight, I kept thinking the Braves were really going to rue all the chances the missed out on earlier. Then BOOM! Like pre game batting practice, with balls flying out the other way… What, did it suddenly hit the Braves collectively that the answer had been in front of them all along? Take the ball the other way…. Hit it where it’s pitched, stop swinging for the fences and the homers will come…

Then switched over to watch the conclusion of the Reds/gNats game… Saw some of the most impressive defense I have ever witnessed with the flashing leather of Brandon Phillips and Billy Hamilton… So many chances, so many get out of jail free cards for the pitchers… Until Frazier hit a two run homer in the 15th and the gNats still had a chance in the bottom of the 15th to tie it… I fell asleep then.

And just like that they look like a MLB team again. So many hits going the other way… it’s as if a switch was tripped and everyone was back “on” again. And one more item that I believe to be significant. The lineup that I posted earlier was altered prior to gametime. The lineup became:

    1. JHey, RF
    2. Pena, 2B
    3. Free, 1B
    4. JUp, LF
    5. CJ, 3B
    6. BJ, CF
    7. Simba, SS
    8. Laird ,C
    9. Teheran, RHP

It changed because Gatt was a late scratch with “viral symptoms”, formerly known as “flu-like symptoms”. But the result moved JUp to cleanup, where I have been screaming that he belongs. He had a HR and 3 RBI out of the cleanup spot. Hello FG!!! Are you paying attention?!?

Now I admit that this power heavy lineup is a challenge given that there isn’t a real leadoff or #2 batter among the bunch. But batting JUp cleanup should be a no-brainer. Freeman #3 and JUp #4 should be etched in stone all season.

If we can get Gatt and Pastornicky back tonight, I hope to see this lineup:

    1. JHey, RF
    2. Simba, SS
    3. Free, 1B
    4. JUp, LF
    5. Gattis ,C
    6. CJ, 3B
    7. BJ, CF
    8. Pastor, 2B
    9. Santana, RHP

Now… before you get on me about JHey leading off, I acknowledge that he is NOT a leadoff hitter, but no one else is either. And at least he has great speed. Plus it allows me to alternate L,R,L,R for the top half of the lineup.

Now… if I was Frank, I’d be doing everything possible to locate a LH leadoff hitting 2B. And phone call #1 would be to the Cubs, who will no doubt be having their annual fire sale in July, and who have the perfect candidate currently playing CF. Remember the name Emilio Bonafacio? I have been screaming it for a couple of years. He plays 2B, 3B, and all 3 OF spots. He’s currently leading off for the Cubs and is batting .295 with a .339 OBP and 11 SB’s. And he’s a SH.

He’s a 3rd year arb guy who turns FA in 2015, so it’s a good time for CHI to start shopping him. He’d likely cost us a mid-level prospect pitcher and Jordan Schafer. Maybe a reliever. He was DFA’d by the Royals early in the spring and picked up by CHI.

CHI is 16-27 and 9.5 games back already. They will definitely be sellers on the trade market.

Remember when Frank became disenchanted with Schafer (just a coincidence) and dealt for Nate McLouth in 2009? He pulled that trigger on June 3…

V, I like the idea of Emilio Bonafacio! One Dick Caveat (if this was 1975, ya’ll ed be laughing! 🙄 ) he got off to a very hot start, then cooled off in May, hitting .236…which is still better than the production we have gotten from 2nd. And from our leadoff hitter. What I saw that was interesting too was that he has hit .400 from the right side of the plate so far this year… not a ton of AB’s but still, you can either play him against righties and/or if he doesn’t tear the cover off the ball, play him just against lefties, and have him pinch run fairly often(The role that Schafer has, and wouldn’t continue in if traded to Cubbies)
Have a true speedster lead off, have JHey bat behind him, get a lot more fastballs…nah, makes too much sense 😉

What I really think happened to the team was they saw how effective the Cardinals were at manufacturing runs… Who says you can’t learn from watching?

Good hitters realize that trying to hit home runs is almost always a fail. Home runs come when you are hitting the ball well and they just fly out. Justin’s homer last night was a great example of that. He was flying down the first-base line after hitting that ball thinking it would drop in for a double…

Bonafacio is just the type of guy the Braves need at the top of the order.

An observation… BJ Upton has looked much better at the plate the past two nights. Perhaps he has realized he is not going to get that call on the outer edge of the plate but he sure can reach it if he goes oppo with it.

Schafer has become the forgotten man…. He cannot get hot unless he gets playing time and he will not get playing time as long as the current outfielders are breathing on their own.

Schafer has become the forgotten man

Hmmm… could be because he has become a younger LH version of Dan Uggla. Actually, he’s worse. Schafer became a fan fave last year when BJ’s early struggles were magnified and Schafer’s early success was equally magnified. But since that early success, yuck. 2nd Half 2013: .170 / .248 / .208. Through 27 games thus far in 2014: .115 / .207 / .192, which is just 3 hits and 3 BB’s w/ 7 K’s in 31 PA’s.That’s putrid. I get it that he’s faced “tough” pitchers. Well, the league is full of tough pitchers. You either hit them or you don’t. His best asset in ATL is his defense and baserunning.

Schafer’s on a 1 year deal, so he would be an obvious throw-in to CHI for their current CF Bonafacio. He’d be a partial season place holder, much like he was in HOU.

At this point, I’d just about rather see Todd Cunningham in Schafer’s role and see what he has to offer at the big league level. Cunningham plays all 3 OF positions, steals bases (7 thus far), and hits effectively from the leadoff spot – .302 AVG /.346 OBP / .401 SLG. And he has 25 RBI on the young season.

    2nite’s lineup:

    1. JHey, RF
    2. Pena, 2B
    3. Free, 1B
    4. JUp, LF
    5. CJ, 3B
    6. BJ, CF
    7. Simba, SS

1-8 same as last night. Might as well ride that horse ’til it collapses, right?

V, there would be no reason to bring up Todd Cunningham , as he would be in the same position as Schafer, riding the bench all the time…
26 AB’s (you show 31 PA’s , I see 3 walks, HBP’s? doesn’t really matter) over 2 months. I would argue no one could stay sharp, with this little use.
Lets break it down to the point one of those stat heads that hurts our brains would say….Dude! On Tuesdays when it’s been a cloudy day game…I keed, I keed! 😛 But seriously, he was hitting .183 at the end of April, after very little use.(16 AB’s) The braves brainiac manager, after Schafer came to him asking for more playing time…seemed to punish him, and play him even less…if that was at all possible. So, he has…. 9 AB’s in May. Twice he was allowed 2 AB’s in a game, to, you know… stay sharp. One game he came in only cuz J Up hurt his back. The next day, Domint was in Left, cuz…he never plays cuz FF has played every single game, and frankly he’s not a very good catcher.
After 44 games, J Hey has missed 2 games , and after a hot week (8 for 20, all singles) is up to .235. With this week, he won’t miss a game for a month.
BJ has missed 3 games(Must have put JHey in CF, and Domint or J Up in RF?) and while I agree with Gil, he sure seems to be looking better at the plate, past the 1/4 mark, he is hitting .201, with a .281 OBP, “slugging” .322. Oh Hey, didn’t know this….guess who over the last week has 2 hits in 17 AB’s, for a sizzling .118??? No doubles, no Triples, no Homers, and no RBI’s over that stretch. Superstar BJ Upton!!!!!

Had to leave that post a bit early…anyways…JHey has missed only 2 games as well, but at least he is a productive hitter…and I know it’s early…and lots of off days, but Gattis HAD to rest….and Laird and his sub .200 Bat needed to be in there(granted, I do think he’s a better overall catcher, but when half the team isn’t hitting…do you want his bat in there?)

You know…some times I look back at older posts, and I seem so whiny….
I’m sure Cubs or Astros fans would gladly change places, take our problems for theirs…
But, a team that is 29th Overall in Runs(out of 30 teams)
    26th Overall in B.A.
and 29th Overall in OBP…. looks a lot like a last place team…
    of course, pitching wise….
    ERA 2.83, 1st Overall
    QUALITY STARTS 33, 2nd Overall
    WHIP 1.18 2nd Overall
BAA (Batting average against) .239 5th Overall … looks like a 1st place team.
I think it’s safe to say, the pitching can’t be this good, all season long…and surely the hitting can’t be this bad, all season long. Surely.
But, I can see some team, Nats, Mutts or Marlins, making a serious run…at some point. But all are weak right now….

Not that I am aware of… yet. But he is available. He was DFA’d by the CHISOX after making it back from shoulder surgery. They have asked release waivers on him. He might be a good reclamation project for Los Barves. He can’t be any worse than we’ve already had at 2B, anyway.

SI.com: Jeff Keppinger was on a rehab assignment with the White Sox Double-A affiliate in Birmingham. In Birmingham, he hit .256 in eleven games, before he was notified of the move that he was designated for assignment. Keppinger is a career .282 hitter, as it seems that once he is officially released, that he will draw interest from many teams.

The Pastor could lose his spot pretty quick, Uggla already has… Still waiting for that shoe to drop but he gets the money either way. I’m thinking the Braves wish he c=would get hurt so they could not play him and collect the insurance but that is not going to happen unless he falls down the steps to the club house.

Pretty pricey guy to have on the bench.

Shall be called the Ballad of Dan Uggla… How he rode the bench in old Atlanta and his fate is still unlearned, poor ol’ Danny… He hit .150 for three straight years but his lesson is still unlearned… Swinging for the fences and continuing his misses, he’s a man who’ll never return….

Well, that was an interesting game. Long but interesting… Made more so by the fact the good guys won. And even Danny Boy contributed… looked good after being on vacation for so long. Would like to see him in the line-up tonight too but we;ll see.

Dan’s strike out was one of those against a guy with a 15 inch slider. No chance… And BJ bounced one off the top of the right field fence… Keep taking the ball the other way guys. They are pitching you out there…

Funny, one guy shows a little anger at striking out and it becomes the lead story on all the baseball shows. Folks, I realize as an adult, the guy has to show a little decorum but frankly, I’d rather have a kid with some fire than someone who could give a rat’s azz!

BJ appears to be breaking out of his funk and despite his strikeouts, Dan looks to be making progress, if only he would cut down on his swing after two strikes…

I thought Freddie should have called for Simba to bunt in the eighth with a man on 2nd and no outs. Luckily, Laird is having a career week.

Braves’ bullpen continues to shine and Floyd did not look bad either. He did what a good starter is suppose to do, keep your team in the game until the offense shows up.

Looked as if the Brewers took some of their frustrations out on the Marlins. That was a bunch of 440 foot home runs hit there tonight. Anyone wonder why players continue to swing for the deep ? Because they don’t show singles on Baseball tonight… Like they say however, “drive for show, putt for dough”…

Oh by the way, I wonder if Fredi’s eyes are bothering him again?
