143: A Third Of the Way Home And They Are Not Dead Yet.

Gil Mechanicsville, VA    by Gil In Mechanicsville

As this is written, we are at the 65 games played mark for most major league teams, this represents about 40% of the total games for a season. It is at this point that most teams know their strengths and weaknesses. The haves are looking at the have nots and licking their chops for the player or players who can push their team over the top into the play-offs and ultimately The World Series. Surprisingly only a few teams look to be totally out of it. Those being the Phillies, the Rockies and Milwaukee. There are others who currently could be thought as slipping further and further behind even though their records are not that bad such as the Reds, the White Sox, Oakland and Seattle. the last two were on many pundits’ short list of being a World Series contender given their histories and improvements made to their rosters.

So much for predicting outcomes base on histories. I guess that is why they force teams to play the games between the lines because as they say, you never know… That brings us to this years version of the Braves. predicted by many to be far and away one of the worse teams in all of baseball for 2015 primarily because they had made an massive off season salary dump with such stars as Justin Upton, Jason Heyward, and Evan Gattis. Most people predicted the Braves would lose 90 games this season and would be battling the Fightn’ Phils to stay out of last place in the NL East. Well, at last glance the Braves are still hovering around .500 and st only 4.5 games behind the Amazins’ are actually therorictly still in it. How could this be so? after all, they not only traded three of their best hitters, they also traded away the best closer in baseball in order to get out from under the pall of doom also known as Melvin Upton Jr., the baseball player formerly known as B.J.

So what happened? Turned out Cameron Maybin has become the All-star player many thought he would be. Only took him six years, who knew. Maybin came to the Breves as part of the Craig Kimbrel/Melvin Upton for pitching prospect Matt Wisler, minor league outfielder Jordan Paroubeck, outfielder Carlos Quentin, plus the the 41st overall pick for 2015. So, not only did the Braves get a decent outfielder to replace Upton, they got a stellar pitching prospect who likely will see time with Atlanta at some point this season and the 41st draft pick. Don’t get me wrong, it hurt to lose Kimbrel but the salve on that wound was ridding Atlanta of BJ and his hideous contract. The gravy on the deal turned out to be that Maybin as played a stellar centerfield, a position the Braves had penciled in EY Young Jr to play during the off season. In a word, the Braves looked to have fleeced the Padres on the deal. That is saying something when you tell one of the players traded for, Quinton, who is being paid $8 mm this season to not even bother to get on the plane to report.

The other prospects coming to the Braves have made a surprising impact too. Jace Peterson who was part of the Justin Upton trade has been a much better player than the utility player he was purported to be. While he is still learning the second base position on the job, he has proven to be good enough to force s position change for projected super star prospect Jose Peraza to centerfield. his second move in as many years after being touted as an up and coming shortstop. Peterson has also proven himself to be a good lead off man with an OBP of .354 to go along with a .284 BA. The other prospect coming into the fold is Mike Foltynewicz, a young right handed starter who is still finding his way as a major league pitcher.

It’s funny but remember how much former GM Frank Wren talked about moving away from the power baseball game to a team with speed but never was able to make that happen? Well, it appears that Frank’s dream showed up this season. The Braves signed a bunch of veterans this off season to act as place holders to fill in short term until the prospects are ready in 2017 when the Braves move into their new stadium. This current group of misfit toys have played so much better than they were suppose to. Guys like AJ Perzinki, Jonny Gomes and Juan Uribe’ have all played well in addition to help stabilize a young club house that sorely was lacking in leadership skills. Even former Baby Brave Kelly Johnson has made a resurgence of sorts by playing three different positions as well as adding some left handed power and a .280 BA with 6 home runs and 21 RBI in 100 at bats so far his season.

Still, the bullpen has become a house of horrors with one of the worse ERAs in the majors. From night to night, one never knows which pitcher is going to put out the fire and which one is going to throw on more kerosene. The problem now facing John Hart and Co is how do you sell off pieces of the current club whole they are still viable as a post season contender? It seems the veterans did not get the memo that they were suppose to roll over and lose so deals could be made at the deadline which would allow for the Braves to bring up a few more prospects, trade for some other highly rated prospects and fire Fredi Gonzalaz all in the same season, thus severing the last tie to the Frank Wren era and John Hart bringing in his own man to manage this team.

I will. Still recovering from the pancreatitis, liver upset or whatever it was that it was doing, and the gallbladder surgery. I had NO idea that it took so long to get over – and I’ve since learned that there is a possibility of lingering difficulties from now on. Why didn’t they tell me that earlier???

Getting some of the hospital, doctor, surgeon, anesthesiologist, and whoever bills in now. Holy! Cow! Hospital alone was close to $34,000. That divided by 7 days = $4857+ per day. PER DAY! Thanks, Obama!! Nice job!

I gripe about the increasing cost of the medigap insurance I have, but times like this make me so very thankful to have it. If Medicare pays even a penny on something, the insurance pays the balance, whatever it is. Lordy mercy!

This on top of double cataract surgery in the two months prior to the latest is sure racking up some money. Wow. Wow. Wow.

The upshot of this shocked (rant?) is that, yes, I’ll be glad to soon as I can. 😀 But you really are doing a super-great job! DOB oughtta look out!

Went out to the cemetery this afternoon and took another little snapshot of Willie Stargell’s space on the outside wall of the same beautiful mausoleum where my mother is interred. (Sunday was 5 years since we lost her.) Hopefully I can figure out how to post it so you can see it. That Pirates cap is just so neat!

Well, the Braves seem to be paying attention to out suggestions. Yep, anytime they start taking out parts, it waylays you. Next time tell Kelly to let us know which hospital you are in if yon need to return. (knocking on wood)

We are just glad you are home and recuperating. I have been dealing with a front tooth that suddenly had decided it no longer liked being ignored. My dentist tried to fill the cavity but only limited success, Their is a root canal and a crown in my immediate future. Oh well, it’s only money… Cannot go around with a front tooth missing and pain is not therapeutic.

Braves are tied with the BoSox 2-2 top of the 6th. Didn’t look like it would be this close the way Julio started out but I fear what will happen when the Sox get into our pen.

The problem now facing John Hart and Co is how do you sell off pieces of the current club whole they are still viable as a post season contender?

That’s actually easy. They won’t. They will not be sellers at the big swap meet this mid-season. Not sure that they’ll be buyers, either. I do think they’ll seek to improve the bullpen, but that’s nothing they aren’t already doing.

I was fairly convinced they’d trade AJP, but the nosedive and demotion of Bcourt has changed all that. No… the primary receiving job is now AJP’s with Lavarnway as the BUC. And that’s OK.

One guy that they may consider trading is KJ. We do have OF options, more than we thought we’d have as Spring Training wound down. But they won’t trade him for a C-level prospect. It’d have to be a decent reliever or a half-decent prospect.

Speaking of relievers. I think Eveland can be OK if Fredi will use him as a LOOGIE specialist. And I think Aardsma is a plus. Those guys should help. I think Avilan is a full blown grease fire.

Don’t forget that we’ll have the availability of RHRP Arodys Vizcaino in about 2 more weeks, and then LHRP Andrew McKirahan about 2 weeks after that. Even though they have been suspended from games, they’ve been working all season. It remains to be seen if they would need any time at AAA Gwinnett to get into any type of game-like groove.

I wouldn’t look for any more vets to be placed on Craigslist. I think they’re done with that phase. Now it’s time to “just win baby!”

They may want to run off and hide for real, especially several members of their front office. That is a big time mess right there…

It is interesting however to learn of the impact computer analytics is having on the game and putting together a team. It’s like Moneyball on steroids. It is hard to argue with the success of the guy’s system though. I wonder what kind of data would be used to input Jonny Gomes?

Your observation about the Braves’ pen is spot on VOX.

Depending upon who’s data you are looking at, The Braves are between #23 and #27 on the payroll chart for all of major league baseball. About $23mm is what is called “Dead Money” , that is money being paid to players no longer on the roster. Guys like BJ and Uggla but also Callaspo and Stultz. Even with the “Dead Money” the Braves are still way low on the totem pole as far as payroll, What I’m saying is the Braves are seriously close to the Marlins when it comes to payroll. No wonder the pundits gave the Braves sub zero chance to win this year.

What the numbers really show is Liberty Media is stuck in the last century as far as what true payrolls cost in the current era. I know, money doesn’t guarantee success but a Triple A budget can pretty much doom you to failure.

So, what of the Braves? Are they going to continue to get by on the cheap or will they loosen the purse strings in the future? For sure, when you compare the numbers with other major league teams, you begin to wonder if the Braves are more serious about the product they are putting on the field or the box they are packaging it in? I have nothing against a team/corporation making a profit, I do have a problem when what they are selling is defective and yet they continue to deny it’s a lemon.

I guess what I am trying to say is, stop crying poor mouth, the numbers don’t bear you out…

    RE: Cards

Per the Houston Chronicle: The FBI investigation into the breach of the Astros’ computer systems is in its final stages and that “the suspects [have] been narrowed to a group of four to five individuals within the Cardinals organization.”

Per Jeff Passan at Yahoo Sports: The severity of penalties against Cardinals for alleged hacking of Astros will depend on just how high knowledge of breach reached. If evidence shows one rogue employee, Cardinals could avoid discipline. If top officials knew of it, league could very well lay the hammer. Because contents of FBI investigation secret, MLB can’t yet determine discipline. Fines almost certain. More, like draft-pick losses, TBD.

To me, the loss of draft picks can be very relative. It really depends on how many, how high in the order and the strength of a particular draft class. And yes, it really depends on how high the knowledge goes. It is only in the Federal Government where the real culprits are never prosecuted.

Okay, new topic… What of Julio Teheran? Is he missing his mentor, Ervin Santana? Every young pitcher can go through ups and downs but Julio appears to be struggling on a lot of different levels. He is supposed to be the Ace but he really is pitching more like a number four. He did pitch really well for 5 innings yesterday, the first inning not withstanding but he really hit the wall in the sixth. I can understand Fredi G’s desire to try to get at least 7 innings out of him yesterday but he simply ran out of gas. Can he get past this idea of 100 pitches per game out of Atlanta starters? If you train to run the 440, you really cannot expect to do well in the mile. (Note: I’m an old guy and simple ignore the metric system whenever possible)

I think I need to argue with myself for just a minute. OK, maybe not argue, but I slightly disagree with something I said earlier. Actually, I need to amend and add on…

First the easy add-on. I inadvertently left Chris Johnson’s name off my mid-summer trade list. I think maybe I did that because it’s just a given, and we’ve gone over it many, many times. Certainly the Braves FOT’s would do backflips to make a trade involving CJ, and there are a couple of teams in need of a 3B, with San Fran immediately coming to mind.

Now… here’s another thought on what the Braves might be “shopping” for, assuming they don’t dramatically lose any ground over the next 4 weeks…

As I mentioned, and very obviously, they have a mess in their bullpen. That is already – or still, depending on your point of view – a work-in-progress. But there is one other emerging need, and that is for an additional starting pitcher.

For whatever reason, Julio Teheran has become Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and you never know which one of them is going to show up. When he’s good, he’s really good. But when he’s bad… oof. He can be dreadful. You feel pretty good with Shelby and Woody. And as maddening as Williams Perez can be, he is an awfully tough pitcher it would seem. Folty is young… and he comes with all the youngster issues. That’s not necessarily a bad thing if you aren’t realistically pushing for the division lead. But as we sit here closing in on the half way mark in a couple of weeks, the Braves just aren’t going away. And thus they owe it to themselves and the fans to make a run. They need another legit starter that can help make the difference over the last couple of months.

Now, saying that, I’m not talking a Cole Hamels-type guy, and I’m not talking about someone that would cost them one of their newly minted top prospects. I’m talking about a second tier type pitcher that can slot in as a #4 starter ahead of Perez, allowing Folty to go back to AAA and work on solidifying his skills on a team that isn’t scrapping for every win they can muster. I’m talking more about someone like old friend Aaron Harang. Maybe the Reds’ Mike Leake. The A’s Scott Kazmir would probably cost too much in the way of prospects, but he’d be a good one.

Anyway, there’s my 2¢ worth for today.

Looking at the current standings and understanding how important the second half really is, I don’t look for the Braves to make any significant moves other than possibly trading Chris Johnson and possibly Kelly Johnson. The first is to make room for another prospect and because the Braves are pretty happy for the short term with Juan Uribe. I know the Braves do not project to be world beaters or even a play off contender but as long as Washington continues to under perform and the fact the Mets have to play half of their games away from home, the Braves still have a shot. Not as a wild card but at least a division championship.

I do not see the Braves bringing in any player as part of a trade this season, they will continue to chum the waters looking for a guys who can be serviceable like Evelander and Aardsma. They are not going to give up anything at this point unless someone were to make a crazy offer for Nick Markakis. I’m talking a Texzeria type trade on one on par with what they received for Kimbrel.

Realistically, the Braves could still end up fighting it out with the Phillies for the privilege of picking the number one draft pick in 2016 but while they are still within striking distance, I have not forgotten how the 88 wins Cardinals won it all. We all know, having the best regular season record does not translate into play-off wins. You have to have a ticket be able to win the lottery. After all is said and done, at least we can say… but we are not the Phillies…

The good thing is that this is not a team built around mega-stars that cause the team to collapse when they’re hurt. Sure, we’ve missed Simba and will miss Freddie, but we don’t live or die with them. Ciriaco has done a great job at SS, and I have no doubt that “Johnson & Johnson” will do a great job at 1B as well.

I too was concerned after seeing Jonny grab his quad last night, but little to nothing else has been said about it. Definitely worth keeping our eyes on. Well, not his thigh specifically. That’d be kinda creepy. Just on the situation. Quads can be tricky, and can linger if not fully healed.

Perhaps Jonny could be DL’d to make room for tomorrow night’s starter, whomever that may be from wherever. Matt Wisler’s last start for AAA Gwinnett was last Friday, and the team has an off night tonight. All signs point to Wis getting at least a spot start in ATL tomorrow.

With the type of hitting approach the Braves have employed this year, they are not as prone to being made to look bad no matter who the opposition has pitching against them. Sure, they will strike out sometimes but they are not swinging from the heels trying to hit the ball 500 feet with every swing. Hitting singles does not get you on “Sportscenter” every night but it will win you ball games.

Last night, aside from Wood’s nice start and the pen’s good work, The base hit on a hit and run play by Daniel Castro was a thing of beauty that made me absolutely giddy. Of course his reward was a quick trip back to Triple A today as the Braves recalled Eury Perez, I suspect to allow for some outfield depth as a precaution against using Jonny Gomes. I’m sure Jonny would play but I doubt he would very very effective.

With Freddie Freeman nursing a sore wrist, I’m sure the Johnson Bros will share duties at first base. Unlike the days when the team could not win without Chipper in the line up, this bunch can be mixed and matched pretty much any way Fredi G chooses to do so.

It’s the pitching staff which gives you pause. Personally, I think a few days off will do Freddie a wold of good and not just because of the sore wrist.

The Braves line up looked very human last night, yet, they managed to scratch out two unearned runs (still they count). It always scares me when they cite some ridiculous number for hitting with runners in scoring position, I know those numbers will come back down to earth.

Second time this season we have seen a error by an infielder when they put the glove in front of their face. The one made by Uribe was particularly costly.

I rest my case on only having pitchers throw 100 pitches per game, showed up last night when Shelby hit the wall at that number. Maybe it’s because they are still so young, the Braves are trying not to overstress them but I’m thinking they should be able to hurl 120 pitches a game as a matter of routine by this time in the season.

The Mutts come to town tonight. The Bravos need to have a good series. Still awaiting word on who they will call up to pitch tonight.

An announced crowd of 31,000 or so for the final meeting with the Red Sox last night. So much is said about how poor the support is/was for the Braves but it would have been standing room only at Fenway with only around 19,000 small and crowded seats available. I’m sure the Braves won’t miss the cavernous confines of Turner Field when the head off to Sun Trust in 2017.

The “book” on Matt Wisler, according to Baseball America:

Wisler sits in the 92-94 mph range and tops out at 96 with a two-seam fastball that features above-average sink. He also has a lively four-seamer and control of his entire arsenal — a trait that has manifested itself in his stellar BB/9 rate. His slider is a plus pitch, while his changeup is average or better at times, and he can command the ball on both sides of the plate.

Although his numbers at AAA have not been exactly stellar, they haven’t been bad, either. And he’s had a couple of games that were dominating. By all accounts, he has the stuff and the makeup of a ML’er. I think just about every baseball source you can think of projected him as a mid-2015 arrival, so he’s right on target.

Now, my personal view: I haven’t seen the kid pitch, but I’ve followed his progress, and I read alot about him when he came over from SD. Most agreed that he was the most “polished” of all the pitchers the Braves acquired this past off season, including Folty. But Folty did already have ML experience, and was coming off a couple of dominating games at AAA when he was called up. I predict that Wisler will see a similar track that Folty has. He’ll be good… very good at times. He’ll have some rough innings, and perhaps a rough game or two. Once ML scouts have seen him pitch a few games, hitters will begin to adjust to him (like they have to Folty). And that’s what separates the ones who make it from the ones who don’t. It’s a constant game of adjustment… hitters to pitchers, pitchers to hitters, etc. What gives Wisler the upper hand over Folty is that he has command of 3 pitches, and sometimes 4. Folty needs to refine his hard breaking ball to compliment his FB, and that’s about it for him. (That’s one of the reason’s I think he’d make a better closer than starter, but that’s another topic for another time.)

I don’t know if this is Wisler’s permanent arrival or not, but I wouldn’t be surprised. I think he’ll eventually be a good #3 starter in this rotation as time goes by. Hopefully he can be that sooner than later.

The Braves have an off day Monday so they could theoretically skip the number five starter’s spot the next time around. I know the shuttle between Gwennett and Turner has been pretty busy of late.

The one player I am worried about is Freddie Free. Wrist sprains can be nagging and it really saps a hitter’s ability to fire off on balls. That means a lack of power and an inability to hit balls that are in. We shall see how it goes. I would rather not have Freddie for the week end than have him be very pedestrian for the rest of the season.

Speaking of ex-Braves, Jordan Schafer, who had a sort of renaissance with Minnesota last year, fell back to earth this season and was released yesterday by the Twinks. He’s been on the DL with a knee sprain, but I expect he’ll latch on somewhere on a minor league deal. Given the presence of guys like Eury Perez, Ham, Mallex Smith and the semi-converted OF Jose Peraza, I wouldn’t expect “Schafer v3.0” here in ATL. Still, if they’ll bring back EY Jr., they might bring back anyone.

Look for deGrome to try to keep Freddie Free, provided he plays, off balance with inside pitches. they will try to force him to aggravate his sore wrist.

Wow, what great game last night, The TV crew said the last Braves pitcher making his first major league start as a rookie to go eight innings and only give up one one was John Smoltz. Not a lot of sexy strike out but lots of weakly hit balls. I love it. And Jace Peterson is a stud!!! Wheeeeee!!!!!

Wisler cam to the Braves in the midnight deal for Craig Kimbrel. I have no delusions, the kid will have his stumbles but it sure can give us hope, especially after seeing Folty stumble. I’m sure Foltynewicz will get straightened out and maybe return as a bull pen piece, no need to hold back on a 98 mph fastball if you are only going to throw 10 pitches.

So, they good news or the good news? Braves win… Nice game out of Williams Perez who despite giving up four runs, managed to have the team score 6 ti make him a winner against Thor.

The other good news, The Braves made a trade Saturday with the D-Backs, acquiring Bronson Arroyo along with the $10.1mm dollars owed to him plus a top 100 prospect they have had their eye on named Touki Toussaint, a young right handed pitcher for utility player Phil Gosselin who is recovering from surgery on his thumb.

While the Braves say it is a risk taking on Arroyo;s contract which bumps to $16mm next season with a $4.5mm buyout, they believe the risk is worth it to gain control of Toussaint. Whew, talk about high expectations? Anyway, the Braves hope Arroyo can be ready to pitch mid August, possibly out of the bullpen or as a starter. He had TJ surgery in June of 2014.

They also feel his veteran presence lost when Tim Hudson signed with the Giants. Arroyo pitched 8 seasons with the Reds.

It is a bit of a risk with Arroyo coming back from TJ surgery but if he does come back, well, that is what you call picking the other guy’s pocket. Now, if the Braves can just figure out what to do with Trevor Cahill….

Wow, that is one weird deal! I would think the braves would have to be pinchin’ pennies….instead, it’s the Diamondbacks…who signed a 1 billion dollar tv deal in the past year, and yet , a salary dump?
    Weird!
I guess the Diamondbacks are thinking, 19 year old…who could be 4-6 years from the majors (depending on if he ends up having TJ surgery) and they get a utility infielder, that might be a starter with a break or 2.
Plus they get rid of a grizzled vet they just signed last year…Arroyo is 38, and may pitch in August after TJ surgery last July…has a 4.13 career ERA.
…hmmm, from e s p n….Arroyo on pitching this year…….”I am behind the eight-ball a little bit,” he said. “I still have one spot in my elbow I haven’t been able to get the pain out of. I am probably not looking to pitch in a game until then. If I can get back to mid-August, that will be good, but I don’t even know if I will pitch this year.”
So, braves act like team with money to burn team to get a several years away, but highly regarded pitching prospect, and Diamondbacks like a team with a terrible tv contract that has to make bad deals to save a buck…
    Like I said, weird!

So here is the real facts about the Braves and money. Their current team, those guys who are actually on the field are being paid about $60,000,000 dollars this season, The son is MArlins territory. Even when you figure in the dead money of about $22 million (players like Uggla and Upton) plus guys on the DL like Mike Minor, their payroll is about $93mm. That is between 23rd and 27th lowest in the majors. The median payroll in the bigs is around $140mm now. The Braves have been crying poor mouth so long, everyone believes them . No, they are not the Yankees nor the Dodgers but they are not Helena Montana either.

The D-Backs are hanging around like the Braves are but further back. They have a deeper farm system than the Braves but LaRussa feels he needs a player like Goose and he does. For the Braves it is all about future pitching, get as many arms as possible and hope 5 of them actually turn out. After all, they will bring a decent return at some point. For the most part, the pundits think Hart snookered the Snakes on this deal. We don’t know all the particulars on the deal like who collects the insurance on Bronson while he is still unable to pitch?

Anyway, In the meantime, I am enjoying this season. Still hanging around the .500 mark as we approach the end of the first half is a huge accomplishment. Did we really expect it? Hart and Co are not going to trade away what they have amassed this year for a piece they cannot control. But, I agree, it’s a head scratcher…. Like, what is he really up too?

I doubt many people bet against the Mets this weekend in Atlanta. It all comes down to Julio sucking it up and getting back to who he was. The Braves are assembling a bunch of arms and if he wants to remain with the team past this season, I suggest he get over whatever is bothering him or he may well find himself back in Gwennett tossing to Betty as they try to “find” themselves.

I would not bet the farm on seeing Mike Minor back in a Braves uni beyond this season either. Like the man says, keep the line moving….

What’s so nice about it, CL, is that we haven’t had to live through being dreadful… like the Astros or Marlins, etc. It’s still a little mind-bogglilng to me that we traded away so much of our offense, yet are far outperforming last year’s edition. We traded away 1 Gold-Glove OF, 1 borderline GG OF, and yet we still are playing better defense as a team than last year’s edition.

This is a team that is hungry and wants to play the game, not just cash the checks. And it becomes more and more evident everyday what was here. Kinda irritates me when I think about it, but then I look at what’s here now and my mood changes back to positive.

    John Hart for President!! 😉

Yet again, it is the kids trying so hard to stay in the majors that are getting the job done to the best of their still-developing abilities – and sometimes more – from what I gather. (Man, it sucks not being able to SEE them regularly!!) Once they’re rolling in more money than they ever dreamed of having, that fire seems to die, in so many cases – with notable exceptions. This is a team that is hungry and wants to play the game, = Jonny Gomes….

It just goes to show you the importance of having veteran leadership on a very young team. AJ Perzinski and Jason Grille have played a part too. They have been there and done that and have the ring to prove it.

Yep, the Braves have had their trips and falls this season but allowing them to hang around will make it much more difficult for the Nationals and the Mets to run away with the division.

By far, the Nats had the best team on paper going into the 2015 season. Big payroll to boot. But…. They keep shooting themselves in the foot. Good for us… The Mets have made a run but without a strong defense and more offense, I see them fading. There were several mental errors this weekend by the Mets that allowed the Braves to expend innings and score runs.

Now, on a completely different note… Mailex Smith and Jose Peraza? Trade bait, waiting for Cameron Maybin to fail? can they play any better than Jace Peterson and Cameron Maybin right now? What a nice spot to be in. Braves will still need a veteran starter on their staff, will Arroyo fit that bill? And what of third base? I don’t see the Braves bringing back Juan Uribe. It is really nice to have options isn’t it?

So, the Braves can still use some depth in the bullpen. I don’t see Hart making any trades to bolter the team short term. It would be nice if Folty can get himself together well enough to be a 7th inning guy.

Here are a couple of notes that I’ve read this afternoon…

First, the Bowman is saying Freddie’s wrist injury is similar to that which shelved Terdo for almost a moth coming out of ST. Not that he expects Freddie to be out that long, but that it isn’t just a :sore wrist”. Ironically it’s Terdo who was called up with Fredo on the DL.

Next, DOB notes that Arodys Vizcaino has begun what is being called a “rehab assignment”, to be ready to be activated when his 80-game suspension is up. Game 81 looks to be July 4. He also mentions that McKirahan will follow the same course. (His suspension began about 15 days later than Viz.)

It was a long night too…. Not like the gNats blew the Braves out last night, after all, the gNats won by a score of 3-1 but the Braves did have their chances, they just could not get the big hit when they needed it. They had the bases loaded with two out in the top of the ninth, and after already having two outs but a pop up to the catcher by Cameron Maybin sealed Woods’ fate to be hung with a loss.

Okay, so there is another game tonight. That the Braves miss Huggy Bear’s bat in the line up is and will continue to be an understatement. Time for the rest of the team to step up and keep the Braves in the picture until the All-star break.

I felt the Braves looked a bit flat last night, surprisingly so following a sweep of the Mets and a day off Monday. Of course, Washington can be a depressing place to be no matter when you visit. Think, all the heat and humidity of Atlanta without the mountains…. Okay, the tall hills that pass for mountains in Georgia…. but you get the idea.

Oh well, at least they don’t have to listen to Bob and F.T. call the game….

Betty still has to learn how to call a game, too. His “big arm” somehow translated into him being a defensive wiz behind the plate. Not true. And his game calling is his worst attribute. Cannot recall the numbers off hand, but it seems that the Braves pitchers’ collective ERA was a half run higher with Betty catching, and other numbers such as BB’s and opposing avg. were all significantly higher as well. Those are not coincidences. I may have to try and dig out those numbers…

One has to wonder if the emergence of Smith makes Maybin expendable?

I believe that much of the reason MSmith has been promoted is to evaluate his overall progress and determine if 2016 is a realistic arrival time for him. I certainly do not believe he will be promoted this year, and I certainly do not believe Maybin will be moved this year. But IMO this offseason will largely be determined by what the FOT’s see over the next 3 months.

I am extremely intrigued and excited to see how they deploy both MSmith and Peraza in the same OF. Last night Peraza played 2B, which he has been doing about half the time since his position change began. But most so-called “experts” believe he’ll eventually end up in CF as a ML’er. So does that mean MSmith becomes a LF? He doesn’t profile for the position, having very little power. And since the Braves already have a power shortage, one would think they would look for a more traditional LF type.

I kind of think MSmith may have been promoted to help showcase him a little. As we’ve said many times, the pipeline is used to both feed the ML team and to trade from an area of strength to shore up an area of need. With Maybin playing so well and under contract through 2016 (with a team option for 2017), and with Jace Peterson locking down the 2B job, and with Jose Peraza playing both CF / 2B, and with MSmith coming onto the scene, one can easily identify CF as an area of strength.

Here’s the thing about MSmith. He is the prototypical leadoff hitter. He has crazy speed. He has put up great numbers in the AA Southern League, batting .340 w/ .418 OBP. He has stolen 23 bases in 29 tries. He is for real.

The bottom line is this: the Braves will soon have 3 talented young players to plug into 2 positions. Jace has a great advantage in that he has already performed at the ML level, and has excelled both offensively and defensively. Fredi and John are both already on record as saying they are not really hip to change his position. (He could probably play 3B, but his lack of power does not profile to 3B. Again, with a general lack of power elsewhere, the team cannot afford to give up another power position to a slap hitter.)

Here’s what I believe will happen. I believe MSmith is being showcased now to become a piece in a trade for either a power hitting LF or a 3B. Those are the 2 positions that the team must address this offseason. I believe they will package MSmith with one of their young pitchers to get a guy, too. And quite honestly, a LF is much easier to come by than a good 3B. In fact, the team could opt to slide Maybin into LF if Peraza (or MSmith) comes up to play CF next season. He doesn’t have alot of power, but there is some power there. That’s what spring training is for, right? To make these determinations? He could hold it down for 2016 anyway. And an OF defense of the speedy Maybin, the similarly speedy Peraza, and the venerable and steady Markakis would be pretty goo defensively.

But this is all pure speculation, and none of it will be done right now… at least I don’t think it will. I believe the offseason will be the starting point for Phase 2 of building a strong contender for 2017, not now.

At least that’s what I see from my chair, anyway.

One more thing before I go back to work. For those who may cringe at the Braves dropping 2 games further behind the Nats in the standings, they still have 4 more games against them in the next 7, with a home series coming up next week. There is a chance to make that ground back up. And following that, the Good Guys then have 3 games against the woeful Phils, 3 games against the equally woeful Brew Crew, and 4 games against the sinking Rockies. That’s 10 very winnable games leading up to the ASB. If ever there was an opportunity to make a good strong run leading up to the break, that’s it.

So, Virginia wins the college World Series which was an upset nearly akin to the USA hockey team beating out the Russians for the Gold Medal in the 1980 winter olympic games in 1980. Okay, okay, maybe that big of an upset but still pretty huge as far as college sports goes.

Shows you what can happen when a bunch of ball players get on the field and just play to the Nth degree.

The Braves played the gNats tough last night but again could not come up with the clutch hit when needed. When it comes down to a battle of bullpens, the Braves are clearly out matched. Oh well, another game this afternoon.

The Braves miss Freddie this season like they missed Chipper back in ’06. Hey, not like we were not warned this would be a lean season. Anyway, Miller is pitching like a true ace now. Just need a little more offense from his team mates to go with his stellar right arm.

I hate losing but the pen appears to be shaping up. At least it is not like throwing kerosene on the fire every time the BP phone rings. Really need to win today though, would make the plane ride to Pittsburg a little less bumpy.

Question of the day: Does anyone know which airport the Braves charter flys out of when leaving DC?

Young Matt Wisler found out today that pitching to contact does not work so well when the defense behind you plays like they have five thumbs on each hand. Hats off to Aardsma, 3 innings of strong relief. Good job.

Oh well, at least he had an excuse…. From personal experience however, I can imagine it was pretty tough to step off the mound with his delivery.

Braves call up to yeoman minor league relief pitchers in two days. Both have spent years toiling in the minors, all those bus rides, even if it’s for a cup of coffee, why not? Not like they have been stellar so far as a relief corp. You never know, maybe because they don’t throw 98mph and aren’t 6’5″ tall, they have been bypassed by everyone else.

Well, for the 2015 Braves, if you want to try your luck in the Bigs, this is your year.

With the day off tomorrow, the Braves could skip Perez’s spot in the rotation but maybe we will get a glimpse of ManBam this week.

Anyway, things are not going to get any easier next week but you just never know. I think a lot of folks in the Braves organization will be glad to get Freddie Free back in the line up. They got away with trading away the majority of their offense until Freddie got hurt.. Speaking of hurt, Juancarlos Stanton fractured the Hammock bone in his left hand this week end. That is a bad injury for a hitter. Think Jordan Shafer…

    Player updates from Bowman:

► Still too early to guess when [Freddie] Freeman might return, but there’s still some hope he returns before the All-Star break.

► Manny Banuelos has posted a 1.59 ERA over his past 11 starts for the Gwinnett Braves. He will likely make his Major League debut on Thursday.

► Banuelos has competed 82.2 IP. To keep within his innings limit (approx. 120-130), he could transition to the pen when W. Perez returns.

In case you have forgotten, the strict innings limit on ManBan is because he is in his first full season returning from TJ. And as you may recall, I have advocated for the LH to be promoted to the Big League pen for the reasons mentioned above – to stay within his innings limit and to be a decent Braves reliever, something we have not consistently had all season.

    Here’s what I’d like to see…

    1. I’d like to see Perez return, and for ManBan to take Luis Avilan’s LHRP spot in the pen. Avilan has been a grease fire.

    2. I’d like to see RHRP Arodys Vizcaino return with a new perspective. Losing half a year’s salary ought to be enough of a wake up call for anybody. The dude has the million dollar arm; does he have the proverbial 10 cent head? I hope not. Hopefully he can come back and be the pitcher we all know he is, and bump the overmatched Brandon Cunniff back to Gwinnett in the process.

    3. I’d like to see LHRP Andrew McKirahan return with the same new perspective, and to utilize his Loogie talents in the pen, bumping anyone currently there not named Johnson or Grilli. And Aardsma hasn’t been bad.

Folks, that’s like getting 3 new relievers at the trade deadline without giving up anything. Then perhaps…

    4. I’d like to see us seek an Aaron Harang-type starter (maybe Harang?) to flesh out the rotation with a grizzled veteran and allow Wisler to finish his development in AAA Gwinnett.

Still thinking he could come back in September (Arroyo) but he did not seem all that excited about being traded to Atlanta.

I am looking forward to seeing Banuelos pitch. Hey, no illusions. He has a tough assignment going up against Scherzer but ya never know. I do hope Wisler got his nerves out of his system. He is better than what he showed last week.

I don’t think it was the “coming to ATL” part as much as it was the “leaving ARI” part. Having read a few pieces about him, he’s a different kinda cat. I believe it when he says he doesn’t feel like he gave the D’Backs, and their fans, their due for the contract he signed. He feels like he let them down because of his injury, and that doesn’t sit well with him. Like I said, he’s not your typical pro athlete of this generation.

As for pitching in September, that would be awesome. I’m not counting on it though. Arroyo didn’t seem all that optimistic, and he knows his body better than anyone.

Wonder if the Braves would entertain trading Jim Johnson and/or Jason Grilli at the deadline? Each can close, or at worse can give you a good 7th or 8th inning. The Braves are about to get back Arodys Vizcaino, who throws mid-90’s with a very good curve. He has closer stuff, if not closer experience. And I still say Folty profiles better as a closer than as a starter.

    Here are their latest results:

    Viz w/ AA Mississippi: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 7 K, 0 BB. He’s eligible to be activated from his 80-game suspension on Saturday.

Folty w/ AAA Gwinnett: 7 IP, 5H, 1R, 6K, 3BB. He also threw a season high 116 pitches, but that distracts from my point except to show that he’s a strong kid.

I think either could do the job, at least for the rest of this year. And don’t forget Chris Withrow, who does have closer experience. Not sure when he might return. Doubt they’d hand him many high leverage innings this quickly in his recovery, though. But next year…

Well VOX, he is drawing a paycheck no matter, my question is who is collecting the insurance money while he doesn’t pitch? No matter, the Braves were after the rookie anyway. They just took on the baggage to get him.

Still, I would think Arroyo would like to make the effort, he is young, he can retire anywhere he wants, he might find that Atlanta is not such a bad place other than the humidity but you get that most everywhere other than Arizona.

Josie and I have pretty much decided to look for a new domicile. Taking care of our place is just too much work for either of us.

VOX, I have no doubt the Braves will be sellers come trade deadline. They don’t have the horses to be in the final heat, may as well get a good return. I’m thinking Jim Johnson might bring back a prize or two. He has shone the most consistency so far as a reliever.

I am becoming a secondary Cubs fan this year. They need pitching, boy, do they have some nice looking position players… Trades anyone? I would not be surprised to see Teheran pitching for a new team next season. He has the ability, just harnessing the mental part.

Ber, I am sorry to say, I missed Brigham’s debut. Nice if he can repeat the feat. I did see Wisler pitch last night though, it was nice listening to the gNats announcers whine and moan about how the got beat, in the end, they had good things to say about Matt though.

It is not the lack of offense that frustrates me so much as when the Braves boot the ball around and generally look sloppy while do it. It is not as if they are striking out a lot, they are just hitting a lot of at’em balls. It is when you give the opposing team extra outs that causes your pitchers try to take it all on their own shoulders and that is when they get in trouble. I don’t even care if they don’t make the highlight reel plays, just don’t boot the ball around like a bad little league club.

It was nice to see a couple of homers last night too, just don’t play for the long ball, it is what gets you into trouble. I fear Jace Peterson may be playing for the home run a little too often and his BA is reflecting it.

There is no question the Braves are missing Freddie Free both at the plate and in the field but you have to play through it. Other teams are hut too.

So glad there is story on Brigham…to me, he’s the feel good story of the year (I sound like some lame movie reviewer) I just love the excitement, the sheer happiness of his Mom, knowing all that hard work had paid off, all the doubters were silenced. No one can take away the fact he is a major leaguer…nice story and 3 video clips. Check out Mama in the 3rd clip. You can just tell they are good people….

Fair or foul? Oh, the humanity…. After seeing so many calls go against the Braves over the years, it was nice to see one go the good guy’s way. Looked fair to me from where I am setting, the ump was right on top of it, who am I to argue? After all, why was Escobar playing in to begin with? A bunt meant nothing… Manbam was magnificent, Cramps and all, must have gotten his hydration advice from Luis Avilan, those Red Bulls have so much caffeine, you actually get dehydrated. Not saying that is what happened but, well, you know….

Now, if Teheran can just get his act together, the Braves might just get this season turned around…..Still pretty amazing though for them to be this close.

It’s not surprising, Ber. The Braves have positioned themselves very nicely as far as pitching goes, but have a few holes offensively as if no one has noticed. And given Bethancourt’s struggles defensively, which was supposed to be his calling card, it would appear that C is now one of the needs of the team along with traditional power positions 3B and LF. And given the lack of power on this squad, that’s exactly what the team has to look for.

Uribe looks to be a decent 3B for now, but next season? Rio Ruiz is at least another year away. The Braves may seek to add another Uribe-type vet to bridge the gap after this year, or they could package a pitching prospect along with Ruiz and go after an established guy.

As for LF, they could address that this offseason in FA. LF’s are sooooo much easier to obtain than 3B and C. And with alot of $$ coming off the books, they can competitively enter the FA market for a good one. That’s the good news. The bad news is that there are not alot of elite LF’s in the pool past JUp. Yoenis Cespides is one name, but he is not unlike JUp in that he is an all-or-nothing type hitter. Alex Gordon is a possibility, but he has a player option in KC and could look to stay there. That said, this year is a good year to be a LF in FA. No other names light my torch.

One thing is for certain: Johns Hart and Coppablehbleh are looking to have a complete team hit the field in 2017. The metamorphosis will continue…

The kid, Franco, that the Phillies have playing third may be their best player. The 3rd baseman the Braves would love to have.

The Braves will find somebody to play 3rd and leff field by the time they move to their new digs. The last vestiges of the Frank Wren era are fading faster than a you can say Christian Bethancourt. I don’t know, maybe Betty is suffering from the same syndrome as befell Frenchie? All we heard was how great he was suppose to be behind the dish, they were just waiting for his bat to catch up. He is still pretty young, maybe that is the problem, too much is expected of kids not quite ready for the big time.

I noticed that Cody Martin was traded to Oakland for bonus money for the international market. Maybe there is a Molina cousin or two still out there….
