# 145: And Now, The Rebuilding Is Official

Gil Mechanicsville, VA

Gil In Mechanicsville

Up until about 6PM CDT Friday night, folks in Braves Country still held out hope the Braves might stage a remarkable turn of events and sneak into the play-offs with an improbable cast of characters. After all, they were only 6 games back in both the division and the second wild card. Stranger things have happened, really… Did anyone really expect the Braves to be this close going into August? Alas, with the exportation of Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe to NL East rival Mets, the Braves front office officially signaled to the world that the season is done. Trading two guys who have done much to add some life to a very anemic offense  for yet another pair of pitching prospects pretty much has signaled they are throwing in the towel for 2015.

Now, to be fair, it was not really a surprise for this trade to occur. The pundits and speculators have been signalling for weeks the Braves were in sell mode. The absence of Freddie Freeman from the line up has not helped either. Again, a failure to score runs can lead to a lot of losses, no matter how good your pitching is. To be honest, the Braves defense has had a bit of “Bad News Bears” quality to it. I have seen many times where sharpness with the glove has added a bit of pop to a player’s bat. Giving other teams extra outs, even bad ones, can often lead to long innings, many extra pitches and losses and lots of unearned runs.

So, what now? I expect some other moves to be made soon. Jim Johnson, A.J. Perzinski, Cameron Maybin and others may soon be traded to teams still in the hunt. None figured to be long term fixtures in Atlanta anyway as the rebuild towards their goal of putting a winning team in their spanking new stadium in 2017. For those of us who were spoiled by all the success of the Braves from 1991 to 2005, it is a bitter pill to swallow. Not like it has been unknown to fail in Atlanta, look at the past couple of years.

One thing we have all come to understand is nothing is a given in baseball. Sure, good pitching usually beats good hitting but a player and a team with talent still normally beats one with only desire. So, as the team rebuilds, fans need to look at the current situation as a process. Look for the silver lining as young pitchers hone their craft. Speaking from personal experience, the lessons learned from failure were often more deeply entrenched than those learned from success. Sure, even a blind squirrel will find a nut once in a while but you don’t see too many blind squirrels getting fat.

We will need to look at each player through the eyes of a scout rather than the eyes of a fan. It’s okay to be critical in your view but not to criticize, after all, they are human beings. Some will have the talent to stay, some will not. Let’s be realistic in our expectations. not many Chipper Jones or Greg Madduxs come along. That is why only 1% of all the professional major league players are ever inducted into the Hall of Fame. Let’s look at it as an opportunity to build another great dynasty in Atlanta. It is just tough sometimes watching them make the sausage.

Five stars, Gil! I think what we have is a collection of guys running around in the same uniform. Here today, gone tomorrow. A throw-back team – all the way back to the days of Torre et al. I remember one of the players back then showed up at the players’ entrance and the guard wouldn’t let him in. Had no idea he was on the ‘team’.

I sense much cynicism. Is any of this really unexpected?

The only thing I see that’s unexpected is how the team freakishly cannot score a single run when Shelby Miller pitches. This is one of the weirdest streaks I’ve ever seen.

I sense much cynicism. Is any of this really unexpected?
Well, no…not really…it bit odd trading with the Mets, but the Nats annoy me more than than the Mutts these days. I’d rather they win, and the Braves traded guys that likely won’t be hurting the braves after this year….
It’s just…if you trade everyone (I assume only Simmons and perhaps FF are the only 2 to not be off limits) that is scrappy, gritty…then what? Then you really have a AAAA team. Heck, the braves AAAA players seem to be more AAA at best.
You do have to have some warm bodies out there. And…if what you have to trade is not going to get more than low to mid level prospects back at best…then, why trade ’em? A.J? Not going to get much for him (Don’t see him in his last year or 2 wanting to be a 4th-5th place team this year and next)Johnson should bring something decent back…but there is s glut of pitching…for some reason. Guess Hart has to hope a team like the Yankees or Dodgers has a couple of key bullpen guys go on the DL and get desperate.
What’s funny is that teams like the Yankees , Dodgers, etc ….all we hear are how they are not going to trade away any of their top3-4 prospects….yet still expect to get Hamel or Cueto. I understand that Cueto is a rental (unless that 48 hour window is opened up, to offer a long term contract, just heard about that tonight with some team) and I understand the Phils GM is somewhat delusional but I don’t blame him for not wanting to give away a #1 just because he is highly paid.
Anyway, getting off topic a bit… Hart seems to think hitters are as important as the homeboy upstairs thought having a strong bullpen was. I know, I get that pitchers are a commodity (I am starting to suffer some fatigue with everyone on tv and print referring to players as pieces, but that’s my issue) but, I don’t see folks knocking down the door to get what the braves have. I don’t see young hitters being traded away. You look at any top hitting prospect and you see a guy his team, won’t trade.
Look at how the Mutts have been this year. Smoltz said they have better stuff than the big 3, big 4 ever had. And yet…they might barely get into the wildcard game because they have no offense (and are apparently a small market team, with little money to spend) and got a couple of decent, but cheap bats.
So, where will the bats come from? Is anyone going to give up top hitters for some unproven arm? Perhaps. What if the arm has only been so-so in the majors? Do they trade Teheren after an off year? (He can of course be a lot better in the next 2 months, at least on the road)
But, if just going after arms was the way to go, why aren’t more teams doing this?
Don’t get me wrong, I think Hart has done a great job rebuilding the farm system…but, he’s still going too much into arms, IMHO. I even heard how the Cubs this year drafted more hitters than the Braves…why?
Well, good question…but, there is one real difference between the Cubs and the Braves. Money. The Cubs cry poor at times, but have a ton of money. So, after signing Lester, they can perhaps cough up some of their hitters for Hamel NOW, and not lose a #1 draft pic signing a Ceuto, etc in the off season. (Or sign several guys in one off season, you only can lose so many draft picks, right? ) They can come up with money to sign free agents that the braves simply cannot.

I know, the braves have TONS, well, pounds worth of swell prospects in the minors…
Here were the top 10 prospects in the braves farm system in 2007.
    1. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, c
    2. Elvis Andrus, ss
    3. Matt Harrison, lhp
    4. Brandon Jones, of
    5. Van Pope, 3b
    6. Eric Campbell, 3b
    7. Scott Thorman, 1b/of
    8. Jo-Jo Reyes, lhp
    9. Joey Devine, rhp
    10. Yunel Escobar, inf

And who has turned into the best hitter of them all? #10. Boy, I sure remember how good Thorman, Brandon, Van Pope, and Eric Campbell were, don’t you all?

Yes, I freely admit, I can be a gloomy Gus! Winking smile
I guess it’s just hard to see how this team, is going to compete against the Nats and Mets in 2016 or 2017 unless those teams just make a ton of stupid moves (If the Nats think they can let all those free agents walk and be competitive, perhaps they should ask Oriole fans nearby how well they have done without Nelson Cruz and Nick M. ) and the Mets , with the 21st highest payroll in baseball end up not getting a legit bat or two…great for the braves!
I will perhaps feel better seeing some of the prospects, either this year or in spring training…HITTING prospects. Peraza , Mallex Smith (Who is only 22 and not doing well at Gwinnett, hitting .215 after tearing the cover off the ball in AA)
All I know is watching an even more weakened offense in Aug and Sept…is going to be the opposite of fun…..

Triples, is Evan Gattis… I know, right? Must be the fact he hits the ball hard but on a line. His BA is around .250 but leads the Stohs in RBIs. I don’t think Houston is disappointed with his performance. I still think he played a decent left field. The guy hustles. It is still early on the final results of the trade made with Houston but at this point, the winner has to be the Astros.

Pitching has got to be either Santana or Hudson… Maybe…

Kelly Johnson must like New York…

if what you have to trade is not going to get more than low to mid level prospects back at best…then, why trade ’em?

Because they are older fill-in veterans at the end of 1-year deals and you aren’t going to re-sign them. Might as well get something, and a mid-level prospect is better than nothing.

Those 2 were the most likely to be traded outside of Jim Johnson just based on those facts alone. It’s why David Aardsma is also a possibility.

AJ is different. John has actually expressed an interest in bringing AJ back because he has been crucial to the development of this young staff. Sure, he could be dealt, but only if someone offers a top return.

MayDay is also different in that his contract runs through 2016 with a 2017 option. And at $7.1M this year, and $8.1M and $9M respectively through those additional seasons, he is relatively inexpensive for what you are getting in 2015, and less than half of what the talking heads expect JHey and JUp to sign for this offseason. I’ll take Maybin’s consistency and attitude over JUp’s streaks and ambivalence any day. As for JHey, well… I hope he continues to play well and gets paid well in FA. But if we’re honest, he underachieved in an ATL uni.

I say all that to say this: I would not be surprised if Maybin doesn’t fall into the “building block for 2017” category.

I think JHey and J Up are both underachievers, based on their talent. J Hey at least you feel like he is trying to improve (and is still 25 I think)
J Up is hitting .154 for July…still way too streaky . And seems to never really learn , improve as a hitter.

I am starting to suffer some fatigue with everyone on tv and print referring to players as pieces

    I understand that. I really do. But…

Whether we like it or not, players are currency. It’s why you develop so many. Less than 25% of whom you develop will make any real impact on your ML roster. Half of the rest will be shuffled around to help you (and your trade partners) fill in gaps as needed.

So we stockpile pitchers now to use them in the off-season. Let’s look at the state of our Major and Minor league starting pitching.

At the ML level, you are young… really young. You have the “grizzled veteran” in Shelby Miller, who is 24 years old. He’s the oldest, but only by a few weeks. Also 24 are Julio, Woody and ManBan. Then you have the guy who has looked better than anyone not named Shelby in Matt Wisler, who is only 22. That list doesn’t include Williams Perez, who is on rehab stint at AAA Gwinnett.

Speaking of AAA Gwinnett, who is knocking on the door? Well, the aforementioned Williams Perez, who is … you guessed it, 24. Then there’s Folty (23) and #10 prospect Tyrell Jenkins (23) [whom I really, really like alot]. Perez could return at any time, and Folty is only cooling his jets in AAA because there isn’t room for him right now. Jenkins’ ETA is 2016.

Running count: 8 viable starters, all 24 or younger, and all under team control at least through 2018. Let’s continue.

At AA Mississippi: You have #17 prospect Mauricio Cabrera (21), who hit 101 on the radar last night. Nice. Then there’s recently promoted Lucas Sims (21), who looked outstanding in his AA debut. He’s the Braves #3 prospect behind only Jose Peraza and Matt Wisler, whom I don’t think you can count as just a prospect anymore. ETA on both of those guys is 2017.

Current starter count is 10 estimated to be here or arrive by 2017.

Braves #4 prospect Touki Toussant (19) is at Single-A Rome pitched a 6 inning no-hitter last Monday. His rotation-mate is #9 prospect Ricardo Sanchez (18), each estimated to arrive in Atlanta in 2018.

Now we are at 12, and winding down my baker’s dozen with one last pitcher, Max Fried. The injured LH is 21 years old, and may have the “best stuff” of any pitcher in this long list when he’s healthy. He’s a big lefty with 3 plus pitches, whose fastball currently sits in the mid-90’s, although most scouts think he’ll add a few MPH as his wiry 6’4″, 185 lb. frame fills out some. He also has a plus changeup and breaking ball. Fried was the Padres #1 prospect at the time he was traded, even if he was/is still recovering from TJ. Given his age and recovery time, his ETA is 2018.

So what does all this mean? It means that even though we know they won’t all be stars, all could be. And John has built these layers of pitching to arrive in small amounts over the next 3 years and beyond. Thus a guy like Julio Teheran or Williams Perez could be moved in the offseason to acquire the 3B or C or LF we’d like to have. Not saying they will, but they could. Same can be said for Folty. Why else would they continue to develop him as a starter when he could excel as a reliever? Currency. But that’s when you have to get a strong return (a/k/a hitters) in return.

Pitching was the currency that sent Josh Donaldson to Toronto. It moved Evan Gattis, Jason Heyward, and Justin Upton out of ATL. And it might again move Justin Upton, this time to NYM. And why? The Mutts have stockpiled young pitching over the last few years.

I purposely did not mention Chris Johnson above because we know what his status is. We’ve battered that topic around here enough. But if you can trade his contract, you can afford to keep Cameron Maybin at almost a zero-sum cost effect. Who would you rather have?

Catcher has been the one position that has thrown a monkey wrench in the plans. No one expected Betty to fail so spectacularly. But conversely, no one expected AJP to play at 38 the way he has either. The impact for 2015 is minimal, but for 2016 and beyond is potentially staggering. Betty is a guy the organization was counting on. Yet, we don’t even get any periodic updates on his “progress” at AAA. That’s sorta telling, IMO. And it adds another real need to the team. We have our SP, 1B, SS, 2B and RF. We even have our CF for now, and a very good prospect in the offing. So as bad as this team looks, it really only needs 3 pieces – 3B, LF and now C. The plan had been for John to look for a 3B in FA to bridge to Rio Ruiz, with LF being addressed by 2017. But given that the FA market for this upcoming offseason isn’t exactly making anyone drool, and given that we now also have to look for a C, the team is going to have to go back into the trade market to make any impact.

Oops! I failed to congratulate 3B Adonis Garcia on his 1st ML HR last night. Woo hoo!!! 😀

As always, thanks for all the good info. The old adage is a team needs at least seven major league ready pitchers at the beginning of each season to be competitive. So many things can go wrong with pitchers…..

I might point out, you did not even mention the slew of pitchers signed in this year’s draft.

So, what is the time line for prospect to make it to the Bigs these days? Use to be 5 to 6 years for high school kids. Twenty six years of age was the point where outfielders reached their potential. PEDs changed a lot of things.

Speaking of outfielders, The Braves may only need to add a left fielder next season. That is where you normally put your boppers. The Braves are offensively challenged right now. I think that is the real problem Ber speaks of. While it is more exciting to see singles and walks strung together to produce runs, it is also harder to do. You really need some instant offense on occasion. To do so, you have to have the guys strong enough to make that happen.

The real problem is having guys who understand when to go for the downs and when to go to the opposite field.

Did you folks know that Cameron Maybin is rated in the lower third of major league centerfielders when it comes to defense? I found that odd…

For all their money, the Dodgers look very beatable. The Yankees are taking advantage of a weak division. Washington is playing with half their team. The Cubs are revealing their youth. Everyone but the Phillies wants Cole Hamels out of Philadelphia. He is a bargain. Going to cost someone a lot of capital to get him.

The Astros are hanging tough, Padres are trying to move Justin Upton. That’s funny huh? So, we are getting ready to embark upon the dog days of summer. Sure would be nice to take a couple from the Os. I’ll be happy when Nick Markakis is back to full strength.

Hmmm. Interesting. I guess maybe Pagan has more power… but MayDay has had a pretty good season.

But it has only been one season. Not even a whole season.

Maybin puzzles me. I love him as a Brave. My heart wants him around until the end of his deal. But my head says that this season has been the exception, not the rule. I cannot let go of that.

I’ll give you the fact that he’s finally healthy, and that he loves being close to home and playing for the Bravos. That’s big. But will he stay healthy?

I’ll stick by my estimation that they’ll trade him for a plus return, not a mid-level prospect. IMO, an OF of Maybin, Mallex Smith and Nick Markakis would be a pretty good one.

I don’t even feel I should dignify the Olney report by mentioning it, but I suppose it is relevant to a previous discussion.

Apparently, according to Onley, the Mets approached the Braves about Andrelton Simmons. The discussions led nowhere in what Olney describes as “unreachable” demands from the Braves. It’s germane in that we mentioned that the Braves are willing to listen on virtually anyone on the current roster, but the demands for some – Simmons, Freddie – would be astronomical. Reports today say that teams are calling about Nick Markakis. Again, I think the Braves will listen. But the price will be very, very high.

I even think they’ll listen on Jose Peraza, but the price will Simba-like.

    One more thing…

If Julio, who starts tomorrow night’s game in Baltimore, can toss a gem on the road , I think John’s phone might start blowing up about him.

What do you think? Would you trade him for a bona fide young 3B or LF? Catcher? As we documented above, there are alot of pitching options. Williams Perez can step right back in and take a spot this week. ManBan doesn’t have to go down or to the ‘pen.

And if you could attach Chris Johnson and his whole contract to him, kinda like he was with JUp coming from ARI, then you might really have something.

I bet the Yankees would be interested in a heartbeat.

Sure, it doesn’t help you in 2015 necessarily, but it could sure help you next season and beyond.

VOX, that is spot on about Simba et al, The Braves will be glad to listen to an offer but it dose not mean they will be willing to sell, especially to a division rival. Just because another team is willing to ask does not mean you want to sell but sometimes you recognize when a player’s value will never be higher and if you can replace what you have with talent. Think the Pirates when they traded Nate McLouth to Atlanta. They knew what they had in McCutchen when they traded away the popular ( with Pirate fans and players) McLouth.

The Os have a couple of guys they might be willing to trade in Wieters and Davis for pitching. Don’t know if Braves would be interested but Wieters would be a real plus.

Thought it was real classy of Fredi G tweeting Collins of the Mets to let him know he was getting two pros in Johnson and Urebi. Not saying both did not make a difference for the Mets but I think both really added to the Mets physic. Sometimes you become better just because you think you are.

I get the Orioles feed tonight, (as with the Nationals, I am blacked out from the Atlanta announcers) On the plus side, I actually like the Baltimore announcers. I was a bandwagon Orioles fan back in the 60s. I don’t follow the Os very much any more but I was a very big Cal Ripken fan back in the day.

Yep, Teheran is one of those guys who you just don’t know. He is really young though and I think his best days are ahead of him. He needs to have the right guidance. One pitch I have noticed he has added and perfected is his slider to right handed batters. It is really nasty. The thing he needs to improve on his predictability. His fast ball really sets up his other pitches.

A lot like Banuelos and his change up. It is a great pitch but not when big league hitter know it is coming, he needs to know you have to keep big league hitters off balance because they are all good hitters.

I know a lot of pundits won’t gush and rave over Wisler because he does not rack up a ton of strikeouts but I love the way he pitches. he gives up some hits but he throws strikes or pitches that looks like strikes and keeps opposing batters off balance.

Sigh, I wish I were not so decrepit. I would drive up to Camden Yards for the Braves game. It is about a five hour drive. Great stadium but you have to get through DC to get there… YUK!

Now I remember why I loved the bus trips I use to take with the fan club. Someone else to get freaked out with DC traffic.

Wow. The guy on the 3-7 show on the local sports talk radio station is talking as if he read my earlier post about all the young pitchers. He’s even emphasizing their ages and depth. Now the talk duo is talking about the team’s ability to use some of that depth as trade pieces. Hmmm…

Funny, so many rumors, so little time. One has to think some assistant sitting somewhere down in the bowls of some major league team passing along water cooler opines to guys always looking for a scoop.

I’m sure if we wanted, we could fan the flames of all sorts of Wild Ass Guesses, as to what any particular team A could do with team B. I though one of the most insightful interviews this morning on MLB network was with a former GM> He said you have to know what every other team has and needs so you can be ready to make a trade with anyone. He said you cannot hesitate either, if you pass on a deal, by the time you get back to a potential trade partner, they could have second thoughts or a better offer.

That is what happened with the Pirates for so long. Too many people had to approve every deal.

Luis is another in a long line of over used arms coming out of the Atlanta pen. His problems are no different from what many others have experienced as having been deemed as expendable parts like brake pads and tires. Just use them until the are worn out and replace. I doubt Luis would pass a physical by another team if offered as a trade piece.

Not sure which shortstop has the thickest medical file between the two. Reyes should like all the wide open spaces to hit gappers in Colorado. Just what the Jays need, more power…. I’m thinking there are three young pitchers who see this as both an opportunity and a bane.

Watching the game last night, I could not help but be reminded the warning John Smoltz echoed about young pitchers fraying their arms. Anyone else remember when a pitcher touched 94mph, he was considered a flame thrower? Now anything below 95mph is considered pedestrian.

Anyone else remember when a pitcher touched 94mph, he was considered a flame thrower? Now anything below 95mph is considered pedestrian.

Greg Maddux made a HOF career out of throwing 87-90 mph… and slower. Fellow HOF’er Tom Glavine’s fastball usually sat around 90-92 mph… and slower. I’m not sure when the “average” fastball speed began to creep upward, but it does seem to menacingly coincide with the spike in devastating elbow injuries. There are physical limitations to what the human body can tolerate.

And I find it interesting as well that the current “science” says to limit throwing by these professionals. They heat ’em up, throw them for 100 or fewer pitches, cool ’em down. Then shut them down for 5 days except for a brief bullpen session in between. Yet, the number of injuries has increased with this caution, not decreased.

The great Leo Mazzone’s theory was to let the guys throw more often, but at less than full speed. In other words, throw more pitches at “low stress” effort. In my mind, it makes perfect sense. It keeps the tissues more malleable and flexible. That same theory goes back to what we alluded to earlier. 88-92 mph is lower stress on the tissue than is 95-99 mph. Duh.

And how many elbow/shoulder injuries were experienced by Braves pitcher’s under Leo’s watch? Only 1 that I can think of, being Smoltzie, who routinely threw 95-99 mph… and mixed in the formerly popular split-finger pitch, which in itself started a rash of shoulder injuries among many successful pitchers. But that’s another topic for another time. (Smoltz had a great fastball and the best slider I’ve ever seen. I hated when he added the cursed split-finger pitch to his repertoire. It just didn’t seem necessary.)

[Also, for those who may think of Steve Avery… his initial injury was an to a muscle under his pitching armpit, which caused him to alter his mechanics thus causing undue strain on his shoulder and elbow, which eventually derailed his career. That was not a direct effect of Leo’s throwing program, just an unfortunate set of circumstances. Ave may be a great example of a guy who tried to come back too quickly from a muscle injury.]

There is sort of a low buzz that the Braves are subtly letting it be known that they would consider including Julio + prospects in a deal to bring back a productive ML 3B or corner OF. Not that they are actively shopping him, but that are fielding inquiries. If nothing else, it makes for interesting banter.

Don’t know if I buy this or not. Maybe it’s just someone’s fabricated talking point to generate discussion. But would that be such a bad idea? I’ a little on the fence about it. He is a top talent, and controllable through most of his 20’s. That’s the kind of guy you build around, not trade away. But then again, as we’ve hashed over and over, we have several young talented pitchers, but no offense on the foreseeable horizon. As always, it would completely hinge on what you got back.

But would you be open to a deal sending off one of our top rotation guys? And a highly touted guy we’ve been following through his entire journey from low-A Rome all the way to The Show?

    That’s a tough one…

Depends on the return. I’m of the mind now that even Chipper Jones would have been for sale if John Hart were in charge way back when.

I agree on Papalbon to the Nats but he has a poison pill in his contract. His 2016 option vest if he finishes 45 games this year. He has said he will only agree to a trade if he is guaranteed to be the closer. So, what do you think? Drew Storen has earned the ball, the Nats don’t really want to add payroll, they are pretty weighed down already.

Ozuna? Yeah, I’d take him. pretty darn good outfielder too. I don’t know if that would make Maybin expendable or simply move him to left field. It’s funny how many clubs still think they are in it who are further back than the Braves.

The Mets picked up Tyler Clippard today. Look out for the ‘mazins….

I think the Braves would like to see Maybin be the bridge to Mallex Smith, who had a great 1st half in AA, but has met reality in AAA. He probably would benefit from a full 2016, or at least another half of 2016 in AAA. So maybe Maybin is at next year’s deadline. I could see that.

But I wouldn’t care how they aligned Ozuna/Maybin in CF and LF. If they were both in the OF with Markakis, that’d be a pretty good OF. And don’t forget that Ozuna is just 24.

Yikes. ManBan has been DL’d with elbow inflammation. 😯

Now granted, the team is handling him with kid gloves this season coming off 2013 TJ. So inflammation is not necessarily a bad omen. It may just be a normal reaction, and something the Braves can treat with rest and monitoring.

It could also simply be a way to give ManBan a mid-season rest. 😉

In the interim, the Braves have called up David Carpenter to the pen. That’s interesting in that if I’m not mistaken, Carp was previously DFA’d and then outrighted. So he has to be added back to the 40-man roster. That means someone has to be removed. (Or they could simply move Grilli to the 60-day.)

At any rate, the talk is that Folty will come up and make ManBan’s next turn. I wonder why Williams Perez doesn’t just come off his rehab assignment? I dunno.

Much movement this week. Stay tuned.

Bradley, over at the AJC, had a pole regarding rebuilding and if we liked it or not. very skewed questions. I did not participate because my answer is “Heck no I don’t like it but I understand why it is done”.. I would just like it a bit more if there were some young bats in the mix.

I guess it is tough to have lightning strike twice and finding another Evan Gattis. Just sad when opposing pitchers have no fear of your line up at all. On the flip side, I look for Atlanta’s pitching to get better with age.

I imagine the Braves would like to get a nice return for Jim Johnson. It has little to do with the money, the Braves, I would not think. are not worried about how much they are paying him. They will want something to sweeten the pot or for someone to take Chris Johnson off their hands.

Eury Perez has a plus arm doesn’t he? He has made some strong throws from the outfield. Just nailed Schoop at third.

Blockbuster in progress. Braves are the 3rd team involved in the Miami/LA deal. Woody is about to be gone. JJohnson, too. And Luis Avilan. Peraza has been hinted, but not confirmed.

Hector Olivera is the centerpiece of the return for ATL. Michael Morse is a part of it, too. A couple of unidentified prospects and a draft pick also. And an ML reliever.

Many moving parts, and some medical approvals are standing in the way and may not allow the deal to be completed tonight.

    Looks like a doozy, though.

Braves like Olivera for 3B. Chased him hard in the offseason, if you’ll recall, but were heavily outbid by the Dodgers. LA paid a hefty $28M signing bonus up front to him, and the rest of his deal is relatively affordable. So the Braves will get 5 more years of him for just $32.5M. Quite a bargain.

Not sure what they do with Morse. LF I suppose.

Well, we wanted to add power, and we’ve just done that. On the verge, anyway.

But I will say this, if we’re giving up a very good young LHSP and our #1 prospect, we better get back a heckuva lot more than a gimp armed Cuban and a reserve 1B/LF who cannot field and who’s hitting worse than the LF’s we’ve been rotating out all year.

Even though it isn’t an official deal yet, we know the names. I don’t think there will be anything added. Then again, it may not happen as constituted. My response is layered below, so it should all be taken in one context.

#1, The deal is far from being a slam dunk. Olivera is the centerpiece of the deal for ATL, and the deal is hinging on the medical reports for Olivera’s elbow being given the okey dokey by ATL’s doctors. I think that’s huge. You have to trust your own medical staff. I truly don’t see the team essentially rolling the dice on a whim if they aren’t 100% satisfied with the medical reports. Plus, they’ve already done this research once. We’ll talk about that in a minute. At any rate, this deal is too big to take chances. Plus, he’s been playing with it at both 2B & 3B with no reported issues. His current malady is a mild hamstring strain. Reportedly he would step right into ATL’s 3B void as soon as the hamstring is ready to roll, assuming the deal finalizes.

#2, The Braves chased Olivera hard this past offseason, so they had done plenty of homework on him. They wanted him very badly, but in the end not match the cash LA ponied up. Well, now they will end up with the guy they wanted all along for about half the total payout he is receiving. Of the total package of 6yrs/$62.5M that he signed for, $28M was a signing bonus that LA has already paid. Minus what he has already received, the Braves will have Olivera under contract for the next 5 seasons for about $32M. In today’s market, that’s a pretty good deal. It’s actually less $ than is owed to Chris Johnson if his 4th year option were picked up.

#3, Olivera, while 30, is a major talent. He is a pure hitter with great plate discipline who has 20 HR power. He’s currently batting .348 across 3 minor league teams for the season. And his defense is reported as plus. He’s also capable of playing LF. Ages 30-35 for a strong 3B is not a bad thing. I can think of a ton of 3B that were more than solid through their early 30’s. In fact, that’s where many C, 2B and SS end up as their careers progress. Plus, he can move out to LF in 2 years when Rio Ruiz is ML ready.

#4, Now the other names in the deal… ATL gets 3B Hector Olivera, LHRP Paco Rodriguez, 21-year-old minor league RHP Zach Bird and the 2016 competitive balance Draft pick (No. 34 overall). Per Bowman: Rodriguez has produced a 2.53 ERA and limited opponents to a .189 batting average in 124 career appearances. He has been out since having arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow in late June. He could return as early as September. He is a major upgrade over grease fire Avilan, although who isn’t? LA gets Alex Wood, Jim Johnson and Luis Avilan, but also Jose Peraza. That’s the tough part… giving up Peraza. (Miami keeps getting included in this as a “3-team deal”, but the trades appear to be independent as far as players going back and forth among the 3 teams. It may be that the LA/Miami deal is dependent upon the LA/ATL deal finalizing.)

#5, Peraza… and there’s the part to really discuss. Why would the Braves take their #1 prospect and give him up in this deal? Discussion late last night hinted that Braves officials were not fully satisfied with his development as a hitter this season, which is why he has not yet received a callup. Not sure I buy that, though. The bigger factor here is actually SS Ozhaino Albies, who has emerged this year as the real darling in the Braves pipeline. Albies, the team’s #2 overall prospect behind only Peraza, plays the same positions as Peraza, but is a much more dangerous hitter with HR power. He’s the rare talent with defense, speed, high AVG and power. He is a 5-tool player with a huge upside. And he’s only a couple years behind Peraza in his ETA. He’s the heir apparent to fellow Curacao product Andrelton Simmons. But the fact is simply that the Braves best position prospect plays a position that the Braves already have depth in. Buzzard’s luck.

#6, This essentially comes down to Olivera’s next 5 years vs. Peraza’s next 6 years. In the end, it would appear that need at 3B has won out over depth at SS/2B. I kinda get it. Still, the Braves are paying a high price to get him. Losing Woody hurts, too. No question. The Braves will replace that LH in the rotation with LH Williams Perez, who has been good. Maybe not as good, but good. But we do have an immediate answer.

#7, We’ve seen John Hart’s track record this season already, and have to concede that the GM – or whatever his title is – does know what he’s doing. After all the emotional wailing and gnashing of teeth when Kimbrel was traded, we all kinda finally realized it was a very good deal for the Braves. I think in the end, this deal (if it comes to be) will truly be one that cannot be fully assessed right away. We’ll have to look back on it after a year or two to see where all the pieces stand.

I wonder if the hangup is an insistence by the Braves that someone – LA or MIA – take Chris Johnson? He hasn’t been mentioned specifically, but it would sure help balance out the deal in my mind. And if the Braves could swap him and his salary for Michael Morse and his salary, then Morse could become a power bat off the bench for us. That might not be a bad thing.

There are some elements that still do not add up yet. The fact that this is being called a “complex 3-team deal”, yet there is no appearance that any players from MIA are coming to ATL, and no one from ATL is going to MIA. At least not as is currently being reported. Perhaps there is still more to this than we know at the moment.

Mark Bradley, ajc: The subtext of this many-leveled transaction is that the Braves themselves mightn’t have valued some of their higher-profile talents as much as Braves fans believed. Jose Peraza was considered the prize of the Braves’ farm system before John Hart/John Coppolella took charge, but wasn’t it curious he was never promoted to the majors in this rebuilding year? Guys you’d never heard of were getting the call, but not Peraza.

Underscores something I alluded to earlier. The Frank Wren administration was very good about pumping up prospects. Think Christian Bethancourt. Enough said.

Per MLBTR: The Braves are essentially taking on Olivera on a six-year, $32.5MM contract that began this season. He’s earning $2MM in 2015, of which about $754K remains, so their total financial commitment to him will be about $31.25MM over the course of five and a half years.

Pretty cheap for a good bat. And we’ve all been asking when we’d get some offense, right? Well, here’s the offense.

Now, about last night’s game. I thought Folty deserved a better fate. Yes, he gave up two bombs on a couple of hangers, well, one hanger and one fastball down the middle but he pitched well enough to win. The offense however did not hit well enough to win. Of course Shelby Miller was saying “hey dude, welcome to my world”…

The Birds are tough at home. They play in a Philadelphia size bandbox and they have built their team accordingly.

Woody is going to like having a team behind him that can score some runs. A little weak at shortstop but maybe that is what Peraza is all about. I don’t think the Dodgers are looking for a shortstop who has a big bat. They have lots of other guys who can supplement that deficiency.

Mark Bradley at the ajc made a point that I had not put together. While Peraza is hitting a very respectable .295 this season at AAA, his OBP is only .319, which is really odd for a singles hitter. It means he isn’t working pitchers and isn’t earning BB’s. And for a kid whose game is speed and getting on base, that’s not a very high rate. Even having been mired in a prolonged slump, incumbent 2B Jace Peterson has a higher OBP (.322) than that…. and at the highest level.

Evidently, the Peraza in CF experiment was a bust, as the organization pulled that plug after just a handful of games and promptly promoted the top CF prospect Mallex Smith to AAA. Peraza isn’t going to play his natural SS as Simba has that locked down until 2020. The team has been very happy with Jace Peterson at 2B, and Ozhaino Albies is expected to hit ATL in about 2018. So as crazy as it sounds, the kid touted as the team’s top prospect really is expendable.

    Mark Bowman / MLB.com | 10:37 AM ET:

The complexity of the trade the Braves, Marlins and Dodgers have been constructing is significant enough that as of early Thursday morning, there remained some doubt about whether it would be completed.

Along with including the exchange of 12 players, this deal includes a Competitive Balance Draft pick that would essentially be changing hands twice within the framework of the proposal that was reported on Wednesday night. Major League Baseball rules state this Draft pick can only be traded once.

Multiple club officials have indicated that the teams have continued to alter the framework of the proposal in an attempt to complete the proposed deal, which has not reached the point where medical evaluations could serve as a holdup.

Now I understand why it is considered a 3-team deal. The Draft pick the Braves are supposed to receive is a Competitive Balance pick that is coming from MIA to LA, then on to ATL. Or was supposed to anyway. Maybe not. Sounds like the original deal may be falling apart, but that they are trying to make a workable scenario out of it. Not sure if I like this development or not. I had kind of rationalized it and looked forward to seeing what Olivera might do with a bat. On a team with almost no offense right now – right Shelby and Folty? – I was looking forward to a glimmer of potency.

Call me crazy, but if the Braves deal Wood and Teheran, and can come away with a couple of real bats in the process, I think we are coming out OK.

Shelby Miller is our ace, no question. Matt Wisler is a #3 at worst. Williams Perez and Folty are both good young pitchers. And every pitching staff needs a grizzled vet somewhere in the mix. A “Harang”, if you will. So dealing both Woody and Teheran wouldn’t hurt my feelings too much as long as we get quality offense back in the process. Lord knows we’ve seen what happens when you have great pitching but no offense. It just doesn’t work.

And as if we didn’t have enough moving parts to keep up with, here’s another wrench in the works:

Reportedly, the Dodgers are looking to flip Wood plus others in a deal to Detroit for David Price. But suddenly, the Jays are heavy favorites to yank Price right out from under LA. Heyman is reporting that TOR has emerged as the “strong favorite”, and that the deal may come together “quickly”.

I can’t help but wonder if that would kill the already faltering LA/ATL deal. Or maybe that’s one of the things hanging it up. Perhaps LA is trying to work that front at the same time.

That did develop quickly. Rosenthal says that the Braves were told by LA that they were not acquiring Woody to flip him for Price or anyone else. So now I wonder if Price being taken off the board gives the Braves any more leverage with this deal. I wonder if it makes LA’s desire for another starter more magnified. Let’s just back away a bit and pull Peraza and the draft pick out of the deal. Wood/JJohnson/Avilan for Olivera/Rodriguez/Byrd is a little more palatable for me.

And to give up Wood, while no price, a young, controllable leftie, paid nothing…for a draft pick? And remember, we gave up J Johnson, a very good reliever, and Avilan , while not great, a lefty who throws hard…for a 30 year old Cuban with no track record in the bigs…and another injured arm…makes no sense….

To be honest, Ber, I’m not really concerned about the arm. He’s been playing with no issue. And the Braves docs did a ton of research over this past offseason, yet were still in the hunt. There were enough teams in on him to allay the arm concerns. Not to mention that the Dodgers were comfortable enough to give him a ton of coin, including $28 in bonuses.

His bigger health concern, IMO, was s blood disorder that kept him out of an entire season. But after finally signing his deal, the Cuban has played really well for 3 Dodgers teams.

Per DOB: Braves have hit .196 and totaled 10 runs in the past seven games, going 1-6 with a 3.00 ERA… hit.216 and totaled 42 runs while going 4-13 w/ 3.96 ERA in past 17 games, 2.5 per, inc. 3 or fewer in 13 of their past 16 games.

You can have Alex Wood and Jim Johnson go to the hill every day, and if you don’t score runs you don’t win.

Let me remind you of one more line: All-Star Shelby Miller, he of the 5-7 record and 2.27 ERA is 0-6 in past 12 starts. 9 times, let me repeat that, 9 times this season Shelby Miller has taken the bump and received 0, that’s zero, runs.

We can have all the pitching we want and won’t win like that. Gotta have a hitter. I think we just got one.

Adonis should hang around to get occasional playing time in LF and help off the bench. I expect Williams Perez to return and take Alex Wood’s spot in the rotation, with Folty staying in where he is. We will need to bring up 2 relievers to take JJ’s and Avilan’s bullpen spots. Vizcaino is probably our new closer.

And the braves traded their #1 prospect (wasn’t Wren saying that, it was the “experts” too) who was 21, and Wood 24, both cheap, can’t get much cheaper…and…Controllable….did I mention that before? I am not worried about going after the $160MM guys, I would rather they go after another Nick Markakis type. Kind of a mid market type free agent. So, what would they need? I would say a power bat to play in left field and a catcher. Not saying they would not spend for anyone else but you have to think of who they might have coming up thru the system.

I can live with Markakis and Maybin leading off, Freddie Freeman in the 3 hole. It would have been nice to have an Evan Gattis type in the four hole but that is what free agent/off season trades are all about. Of course that is the position Olivera is suppose to fill me thinks.

I get your apprehension, Ber. I really do. But this kid actually has a somewhat proven bat. He’s proven it in Cuba’s highest level. This is what you have to do to get offense.

As for the Uribe comparison. when Olivera’s contract is up in 6 years, he’ll be Juan’s age. I won’t want him then either.

But tell me… where are you going to find your offense? As has been well documented here, the Braves have plenty of pitching in the pipeline, but no bats. So they went after a bat. That is a good thing, right?

And don’t try to sell me on Peraza as a bat. A speed guy has to have better than .319 OBP. Slumping Jace Peterson has better than .319 OBP. He wasn’t going to help this lineup this season, even if you did find a position for him to play.

And when you think about it, if he’s the offensive dynamo that some think he is, why was he never promoted to the bigs in a year when we can’t score squat? And in a purported rebuilding year at that when guys we’ve never heard of were getting the call… but not Peraza.

When Andy Simmons was hurt, who came up and played SS? Daniel Castro. When Kelly Johnson was traded, who got the call? Daniel Castro. There’s a reason it hasn’t been Peraza.

The Braves sold high on Alex Wood and they sold high on Jim Johnson. And honestly, they sold high on Peraza, who is more unproven than Hector Olivera. I’ll take a flyer on an “unproven” guy with greater offensive potential, and at a position of greater need, over an “unproven” guy without a clear position to play.

In the final analysis, John (pick one) feels the team will get more out of Hector Olivera over the next 5 years than they would from Jose Peraza. And that’s the bottom line.

What those carrying Hart’s water aren’t telling you…that’s over…..19 games. Wow…I am sold. Closers, above average left handed starters and the top prospect in the organization, for an unproven 30 year old 3rd baseman, and money savings and a draft pick :/

I knew that; it wasn’t hidden like a Hillary Clinton email or anything. But it was the only US sample from which to draw. OK, then. 10 seasons (642 games) on the Cuban National team: .323/.407/.505 w/ 96 HR

Ber, we’ll just have to agree to disagree and just let it play out. One thing we should both be able to agree on is that both players are “unproven” at the major league level and neither of us has a crystal ball to see what the future holds.

So we disagree. That’s not a bad thing. At least we have the same goal. I love your passion about it.

V, sometimes I re-read a post and the tone seems sharper than when I wrote it.
And agreed, we all want to see this team do well….
And I will admit, the kid looks athletic. If you can call a 30 year old a kid.
And I also thought, if he was so amazing, why was Justin Turner their 3rd baseman? Is it only injuries that kept him down on the farm?
Again, not to beat a dead horse (too late!) I don’t get why they couldn’t trade Wood, Peraza, and J Johnson for say…a 23, 24 Y.O. hitting prospect. And if you can’t get one for all those guys, then they are going to find it hard to trade all these arms for hitters….
Why not trade for Jay Bruce or someone like that? I guess too expensive

why was Justin Turner their 3rd baseman?

Did you see what he did to the Braves? 😉

Cost is part of it. Olivera’s relatively low contract cost (signed through 2020 for total cost of $32M) is peanuts for a hitter these days. I heard a ton of national discussion last night, and 20 HR guys are getting paid today like 40 HR guys just 10 years ago. They estimated that if he pans out the way he is projected, the Braves will control him for about half the market cost. Of course, LA already paid him $28M in bonus money, so he isn’t exactly going to starve. But the Braves have picked up an offensive weapon that they can plug into the middle of the lineup for the next 5 years. And the Braves sorely need help in the middle of the lineup.

    Again… last night… 12 hits, 1 run. Ugh.

As for why LA dealt him, the emergence of Turner is part of it. Remember, Olivera plays 2B and LF as well. LA has depth at these positions, so they used their depth to acquire pitching, or what the Braves did in reverse.

And remember, we also received a ML reliever with very good numbers, another young pitching prospect, and the 35th pick in next year’s draft. (Not to mention that LA is now on the hook for most of Arroyo’s deal.) This was more than just giving up 4 players for a 30 year old Cuban rookie 3B.

And from a personal standpoint, we dumped the grease fire known as Luis Avilan. He’s the one guy that made me cringe when he came into a game. No lead was safe. I’d rather they use Chris Johnson on the mound.

BTW- It was pointed out last night in post-game…

The Braves started the season with 3 Johnsons. They are down to 1. Who would have thought it would be Chris? Of course, it isn’t 4pm yet.

And here we are… just slightly under 7 hours until the trade deadline. This has to be one of my favorite times of the year. Things just get so nutty. it’s going to be very difficult to stay on top of my work and stay on top of the rumors/news as it breaks. But I’m going to try…

Overnight, Mike Leake went to the Giants, which I think is a great move for them. Also, Carlos Gomez went to the Astros, who are without question my favorite AL team. (As a very young kid, I had a baseball cap with a “H” on it. No clue where it came from or what is stood for, but I decided it stood for Houston and became an Astros fan. We’re talking early ’70’s here. But I somehow have always had a warm spot for HOU, and even more so now that they are in the Junior Circuit.) Anyway, I like that they landed Gomez, and I love that they are in talks with SD to bring over Tyson Ross and Craig Kimbrel. What a deal that would be for them, huh? I hope it happens.

More rumors than I want to document here, but I will address this much. I do think the Braves have another big move in them. Whether it’s Maybin or Teheran… or both, and whether Chris Johnson is attached to one of them, I still think there is another bullet in John Hart’s chamber.

    Stay tuned.

Lots of moving parts, maybe MLB should take a page out of NASCAR’s playbook and start the play-offs after 2/3 of the season… Okay, just kidding.

Isn’t it sad but the Braves have just collapsed in July. The were within sight of the front runner but the folded like a cheap card table. For all the depressed players left in the club house, they need only to look in the mirror to find the reason for their failure.

Okay, the front office help a lot in the off season but they were still relevant. Jo says she has no idea who these guys are that are impersonating the Braves. I’m not sure I do either. I watch other clubs and they have more Braves players on their roster than the Braves do.

Ah ha!! And thus why they have traded for picks and traded for international signing slots. If you’ll recall, they were able to sign 3 int’l FA’s during that period because of the slots they obtained. Same as drafting, except that you get to go in and work to get the guys you really want. And the Braves signed 3 highly regarded fellas. Now they have obtained an additional comp draft pick (in between rds. 1 & 2) plus still hold a couple more int’l signing slots for next year. All that without losing 100 games.

Chatter also says he’s getting alot of calls on AJP, but prefers to keep him to mentor his young pitchers. But as with Julio, he’s still listening. A kind of a semi last thought about Chris Johnson. From where I sit, I would think John Hart is not worried about the trade deadline as far as CJ is concerned, No one appears to want to pick him up for his salary, probably feels he would clear waivers fairly easily but at this point has nothing to lose by keeping him until such time he might get a bag of balls in exchange.

I think Chris is having a tough time not letting the fact he knows the Braves don’t want him allow him to play thru it all. A change in scenery would do him and the Braves good.

It should be noted that guys like Gomes, AJP and especially Chris Johnson could still be dealt post non-waiver deadline. Their salaries are unlikely to be claimed by any team not motivated to make an acceptable deal.

That is a strange one Ber, I would think that unless the Braves knew Arroyo would not pitch or maybe the Dodgers knew how much the Braves coveted Olivera so they tweaked another $8MM out of the Braves, that brought it close to the original $40mm they were going to pay for him to begin with. Of course it also cost them Wood who has since been flipped to the Cubs.

Perhaps someone somewhere has made a flowchart of all of this.

Joe commented on the good job Brian Snitker had done at AAA, and how him being sent down to Gwinnett was a terrible thing (He used some stronger term, despicable ? ) I like Joe, and hope they will let it go. You never know these days
As for Brian Jordan, he was saying it looked like the team had quit, and how that was unacceptable. I hope he too will be allowed to tell it as it is, and not get turned into a Yes Man.
They keep trying to find highlights from these games…and, well, there really aren’t any. I guess more clips from the past….
I am going to be make a startling prediction.

Good morning fellow Stuffians, it’s always a better day when the Braves win
It has been tough watching this team lose in new and varied ways. Still, it comes down to timely hitting. It is not like the Braves have been striking out a ton. Just a lot of really good plays made against them.

Folty takes the hill tonight against Cain. Tim Hudson put on the DL so I guess he won’t make the trip to Atlanta.

Watched part of the Mets/Nats game last night. Funny how I could root for the Mets to win against Washington. Weird is what it was. I have to ask myself, is it DC or Bryce Harper in particular I have disdain for? I still think most Met fans are Jerks… Alas, I do not feel that way about fans from other cities.

It was nice to see Jonny Gomes be productive yesterday. The guy plays hard. Chris Johnson had a big knock as well as Jace Peterson. It has to make it a lot easier on Julio to know he does not have to be perfect. T’was good to see him bow his neck a little yesterday and challenge hitters. Lavanway called a nice game too.

Pretty unbelievable outcome last night. I was sitting in my recliner thinking about switching over to watch something else when Jace hit that three run homer, I’m thinking, well, just keep chipping away, then with Freddie going down to an oblique, it’s oh crap. But Chris Johnson hits a big one. Okay only one run down. Ninth inning Giants score an insurance run and I’m commenting to Josie, well, they made it interesting. I was stunned when A.J. went deep to tie it. Okay, can they win this? 12th inning and Giants score to go ahead, bottom and Adonis proves it ain’t over til it’s over. Amazing game. Whew….

Back to reality, Freddie going down does not make us a better team. Going to be tough but at least we now know this years team can still come to play. I think the biggest influences has to be the additions of Gomes and Perzinski. One has to wonder if those two could have saved Frank Wren’s job last season if they had been around?

Okay, their is another game tonight, the Giants will be looking to get even. The home boys need to score some runs for Miler for a change.

I think AJP is easily this team’s MVP. I don’t even think it’s close. The fact that he wasn’t traded at the deadline shows the organization sees his value. I think they’ll try to keep him around another couple of years, and I think he’ll be open to that.

One has to wonder if those two could have saved Frank Wren’s job last season if they had been around?

Frank could not have had the foresight and vision to bring them in. Plus, Frank would have insisted Betty play everyday so as not to admit his error in assessment… much like Melvin, except different.

As bad as some folks want to bemoan slashing so many players from last year’s roster, that bunch would not have had the heart to fight back for last night’s win. They would have rolled over in the 4th inning after Folty gave up Crawford’s second wall scraper.

I thought one of the more telling comments made by Fredi G last night was that this team might be out talented but the won’t be out hustled. I guess what has been so frustrating in many games was the Braves often brought the tying or winning run to the plate but could not get the big hit. The Braves have been offensively challenged as far as the long ball is concerned but I am not sure if it is hitting philosophy or lack of physical strength. .

By the way, how about Matt Marksberry? I kinda like him. Started the year at high-A Rome, and ends up in the ATL pen. Kid looks fearless and can throw some cheese. I like his glasses too. 🙂

To me, the key play last night was when Chris Johnson forgot how many outs there were and ran to the bag for a force out at first instead of throwing home or to second to start a double play. That allowed the tying run to score and the inning to continue. It also forced Fredi to use a pinch hitter in place of Miller in the bottom of the inning. Ya’ll know the rest.

Only once did I forget how many outs there were during a game, I was standing on second base when a flyball was hit to centerfield, a can of corn really, I was surprised that the fellow who was on first was now standing on second with me as the ball was caught. Never happened again I’ll tell you. What was he thinking about? How to spend the $12mm he is going to make over the next two seasons? Don’t be surprised to see Terdo playing first tonight.

I heard a great discussion with FrediG last night pre-game regarding his last minute shuffling of the lineup on Tuesday – not replacing anyone, just changing the order. It would seem that he and Seitzer had discussions earlier in the day regarding Cameron Maybin’s spot in the order. Seitzer suggested dropping him down to a run producing spot since he’s been the most consistent hitter on the team. FrediG said he didn’t want to put him into any positions he wasn’t comfortable with, but proceeded to look at his career stats and found that he actually had a little over 150 AB’s in the #5 slot. He told Seitz he’d think about it.

Well, during BP, Maybin approached Seitzer and told him he wanted to move down in the order in an effort to help the team more. Seitzer went straight to FrediG and related the conversation, so FrediG summoned Maybin to his office. He said he told Maybin if he made the change, it wouldn’t be for just one game; it would be for several games to see the effect. Maybin said he was all for it. FrediG said he told Seitzer, “Change the lineup card.” Seitzer said, “Now?!?” And they did… less than an hour before 1st pitch.

ANFSCD: Anyone notice that the Braves broadcasters have begun pronouncing Eury Perez’ name differently lately? Apparently the correct pronunciation is \EE-your-ee\ with three syllables.

I thought it was \Your-ee\, the way it looks.

Spanglish, another langue I can’t get a grasp on, like French, but different. Having grown up learning phonics, I can sound out just about any word but it does not mean I can spell worth a hoot nor does it allow for me to realize et sounds like a long a…. or j is pronounced like an h… I speak American English with a semi southern dialect. No wonder I have a hard time communicating with folks. As in “What I said is not what I meant for you to hear.”

T’was pretty funny when EE-YOUR-EE, held up his glove thinking he had made the catch on a liner to left only to find out it had popped out of his glove and rolled to the fence. I would not have been funny if it had cost us a run. Another lesson learned for the young outfielder. CHECK YOUR GLOVE FIRST!

E-Eury has had quite a couple of days, hasn’t he? Maybe if he’d had one more Wheatie on Monday morning, he could have made 3 HR robbing catches at the wall. As it was, E-Eury had 3 elevated glove scrapers.

And one more Wheatie yesterday mornng may have gotten another web gem. Alas, he missed it by that much.

Yep, pretty tough watching these days, I cheated and flipped over to see the Marlins comeback against the Mets. Just what we need, another struggling team to come in with something to prove. Mets still won 8-6 but they were up 8-0 after 8 1/2…

It would be nice if the Braves had some young hot shots in the wings they could bring up but I think what we see is what we got….

Why does this matter? Well, it matters because the Braves took their #18 prospect, who has been a starter since signing, and put him in the bullpen about a month ago. Now he’ll be in AAA Gwinnett’s bullpen. And we all know that Gwinnett’s bullpen is a mere phone call away in 2015.

Ever notice that Wisler looks completely insane in the postgame interview? 😉
So…not sure if this is exactly accurate or not, but…the braves payroll next year might be…. 57 MIL. That would be 11 MIL lower than the lowest payroll in baseball this year
    http://www.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/?team=ATL
Which leads me to this post on mlbtr….
Braves GM John Hart also discussed his team’s role in the three-team, thirteen-player deadline deal with the Dodgers and Marlins with MLB Network Radio (Twitter links). He confirmed that the club was motivated primarily by the chance to add the bat of infielder Hector Olivera for a relatively minor commitment (five-years and roughly $30MM after 2015). Atlanta was weighing its options for bolstering its lineup, he indicated, and felt that it would cost too much to compete for the top-level bats set to hit the coming free agent market.

So….the Braves could have just paid what the Dodgers did for the 30 year old Cuban. And either keep Alex Wood and Peraza or, traded them….or, brag about trading their best lefty starter and top prospect for 1 hitter…
I know, this time I am alone…but, unless the Cuban hits 30 + a year (I heard they hoped for 20 HR’s .285 BA, yawn) this trade will never make sense for me.

By the by, Peraza is 11 for 23 for Oklahoma for a .478 BA. Keith Law said he will likely move back to SS and with Corey Seager at 3rd (also 21) they will be the left side of the Dodgers infield for many years to come….

Ber, let me try to hit a few of your points one at a time…

First, regarding Olivera. I get it that you don’t care much for him, but the Braves were all over him this past offseason, and all their scouts were all tingly about him. The Braves made a very competitive $48M total offer, but were blown out of the water by the Dodgers’ $65M deal. In the end, they will end up getting 5 of his 6 years at about $32M. I think they have come out OK. I trust the scouts… they are some of the best in the business.

Second, you yawn at 20 HR’s .285 BA, but in this post-steroid era, that’s what the top tier hitters are going to give you. Admittedly, there are some “stars” that will exceed it, but 20/.285 is something I think we’ll all be happy with at 3B.

the braves payroll next year might be…. 57 MIL. That would be 11 MIL lower than the lowest payroll in baseball this year

In a recent radio interview, Braves GM-in-waiting John Coppollela said that the Braves are poised to push their payroll upward of $110M, but that it doesn’t mean they’ll spend money on bad FA.

And have you looked at the FA class for 2016? There are a handful of impact pitchers, and alot of pedestrian bats.

Top position FA’s as currently ranked:

OF Jason Heyward: Career numbers projectt 19 HR, .265 AVG. Kinda makes Olivera look a little better, eh? Expected to sign in the range of 8 years, $180M.
OF Justin Upton: Career averages of 26 HR, .275 AVG, 84 RBI and 162 K’s. Ouch! Expected to sign in the range of 7 years, $145M.
OF Yoenis Cespedes: He will an “old” 30 years of age when he hits the market. Career averages of 28 HR, .269 AVG, 102 RBI. Expected to sign in the range of 5 years, $115M. [I’ll take his 102 RBI all day long.]
OF Alex Gordon: He’s already 31. He’s ancient!! He has a player option for 2016 at $12.5M, so he has leverage. Expected to re-sign with KC in the range of 6 years, $100M.
C Matt Wieters: He is a 29 year old catcher. How much does he have left in those old legs? Similar to BMac in his FA year, he needs an AL team to get some occasional days at DH. Still, he’s expected to sign in the range of 5 years, $80M. [Baltimore has a talented C prospect in Steve Clevenger waiting at AAA, and will probably make a bigger push to keep Chris Davis.]

    Which brings me to…

1b/OF Chris Davis: A very underwhelming OF that really needs to be planted on 1B. But he’s the biggest power source in the 2016 market. And Baltimore will make every push to keep him there. Expected to re-sign in the range of 6 years, $100M.

And past that, there aren’t any real impact positions players available.

Do you want to go down the JHey or JUp roads again? Not me. Been there, done that, went home early. And way too expensive. JHey is still an underachiever to me, and JUp is too flippin’ streaky.

Gordon and Davis will go back to their current teams.

Wieters is a possibility, but I think the Braves would rather trade for a younger catcher.

Cespedes is the only realistic FA target for 2016.

So it stinks, but it is a fact that the year that the Braves have a ton of salary leaving the books, thus alot of payroll flexibility, the market simply bites.

And while it could be a little frustrating to have a small payroll and feel that we aren’t doing enough to bring in good players, spending money just because you can is never a good idea. Just look at Melvin Upton. Enough said there.

    Now… that said…

The Braves will tap the FA market for pitching, I believe that. As cool as it is for the team to have such a young and talented rotation, teams have to have a veteran presence among their starters. They simply do. Ask the Giants. Look at the Mets with their young and very talented staff being led by 67 year old Bartolo Colon.

So I expect the Braves to do just that. i think they’ll bring in a veteran guy to lead the charge. Will they pursue a David Price? You know what… maybe. Chasing FA bats is always a crap shoot. Melvin Upton, Jason Bay… the list is long. But FA pitchers have a much better track record. And harkening back to the “Braves way”, they didn’t mind breaking the bank to add Greg Maddux to a crop that included Glavine, Smoltz and Avery, did they?

Then you have increased your surplus of young pitchers and can, once again, go after a hitter in trade.

And I think that’s where they’ll get their future catcher. They’ll give up a young top arm (Julio?) a prospect and CBetty and go after Jonathan Lucroy. Watch ’em.

    Now Peraza…

The Braves did a great job hyping this dude for a couple of years, because they really didn’t have anyone else to hang their hats on. But the fact is he isn’t a game changer. He’s a good complimentary player. he’s a speed guy with almost no power and a pedestrian OBP. He’s a 7-hole or 8-hole batter whose OBP at AAA was just .318. Jonny Gomes’ OBP is .312. Yikes. And his SLG is a mere .379. That’s right there with Daniel Castro and Pedro Ciriaco.

As you all know, I am not a SABRE guy, and cannot stomach all the brainiac arguments that these basement dwellers put up. Forget WAR, fWAR, UZR, ABC and 123. I don’t care. But OBP? Yes. SLG? Yes. And the cumulative OPS (OBP + SLG)? Yes. Because OPS is a real quantitative measure of a hitter’s game impact based on his on field performance night to night.

Peraza’s career OPS is .737. To put that number into perspective, the top OPS in MLB right now belongs to Bryce Harper at 1.127. He’s followed by Paul Goldschmidt and Mike Trout at 1.033 and 1.005 respectively. .737 would rank #86 in MLB, alongside Carlos Santana and Daniel Murphy.

That is not impact. That is complimentary. And if your top position prospect is a complimentary player, you have problems.

By comparison, Hector Olivera has a career OPS in the top Cuban league of .885. In MLB, that would rank #15, right after Andrew McCutchen’s .886.

Granted, the top Cuban league is not MLB, and more fairly compared to AAA. But none of Peraza’s AB’s have been in MLB either, so the comparison is still valid.

If you want a guy who can give you a .318 OBP and a .379 SLG, just stick with Jace Peterson. You know what you have there and he’s already doing it. Again, deal from an area of depth to help in an area of need.

Peraza’s best position is SS, and he was blocked in ATL by Simba. he’s blocked at 2B by Jace. He isn’t an OF, and he certainly isn’t a 3B. So you use his name recognition and go after what you need, which is impact at 3B.

So Ber, it would seem that you and I will continue to disagree on Olivera and on Peraza. But the good news is that those players will eventually bear out our opinions for us to see. And to that end, this was a trade that simply cannot be categorized in the “Winner / Loser” category for a while. In fact, we probably cannot fully dissect it until each of those players has a couple of years MLB experience under his belt. For that matter, we haven’t gotten a chance to see Paco Rodriguez or Zach Bird either. Time will tell on this one, but we have to give it that time.

MLBTR’s Jeff Todd puts it this way: (NOTE: He’s lumping all deals together)

Braves acquire Hector Olivera, Paco Rodriguez, & Zachary Bird, Rob Whalen & John Gant in deals for Alex Wood, Jim Johnson, Luis Avilan, Bronson Arroyo & Jose Peraza, Juan Uribe & Kelly Johnson — The Wood-Olivera deal (originally “the Latos deal”) might have been the deadline’s most interesting, and it’ll take quite some time to see how it plays out. Atlanta continues to be exceedingly creative in structuring trades.

I applaud their creativity because it shows that they are working every angle to make this a contending team for 2016 forward…

His agent is looking for 30 Mil a year. Ok. Braves won’t do that. Yeah, you’re probably right on David Price specifically, but you get the idea of where I’m going. (Zack Greinke is probably out of play also. LA will give him whatever he wants to keep him there.)

But would the Braves give Johnny Cueto, Jordan Zimmermann or Jeff Samardzija 5 years / $100M, give or take a little? I think they might, especially given the dearth of impact hitters in this upcoming FA market.

I don’t get the outlook of gloom and doom for 2-3 years down the road. We knew what this year would be, and it is every bit of what was expected. But why 2016 and 2017? None of us know what the team will even look like next year, but we do know that the team – and ownership – are making a huge push toward the new park opening in 2017. There is no way they’ll let this current assemblage drift aimlessly toward SunTrust Park without major upgrades. It just simply will not happen.

Here’s what we do know we’ll have:

Freddie Freeman. He’s missed significant time with injuries for the first time in his career and the team has suffered greatly from it. His whole body of work suggests that is an anomaly. Having him back in the lineup anchoring the middle will be a big boost. Look at the team’s offensive numbers with him in and out. Want an impact bat for 2016? Just get Freddie back for 162 games.

Andrelton Simmons. He’s the best defensive SS in the game. Nothing changes there. Pitching + defense = chance to win.

Nick Markakis. He’ll get to have a normal offseason this year to regain his strength and his power numbers will come back toward normal. And there is no denying what a good hitter he is. He’s already showing us that every night.

Hector Olivera. Dude has high expectations. Time will tell if he meets them.

Shelby Miller. With any semblance of run support, he’d be in the Cy Young conversation. The winner? No. But in the conversation.

Beyond those… all bets are off. They showed when they traded Alex Wood that everyone is on the table save the folks mentioned above. So the reality is that we don’t have any idea what the team will really look like when it hits the field in 2016, much less 2017.

So come on, you Negative Nellies. This time of rebuilding is something every team has to go through. The fact that the Braves have not had to do it since 1991 speaks volumes for the organization. The flip side is that is also has spoiled a fan base that doesn’t quite know how to react.

I lived through the powder blue Braves of the 70’s and 80’s. I know how to deal with adversity. I’ve lived 100-loss seasons. Many of them, all in a row. The reality is that this type of rebuilding process should have started before now. The team has done little more than hang onto merely qualifying for the playoffs since 2005. They haven’t had the horses to make a real run in 10 years. And in the process of hanging onto middle ground mediocrity, they allowed the pipeline to dry up.

Have patience, my friends. Have patience and trust the scouts and execs. They get paid a heckuva lot more than we do to make these decisions.

    I like Zimmermann a lot…think he’s way undervalued/respected….
I think Cueto, if healthy, is more likely a 25 to 30 mil guy. A pitcher that has a sub 3 era playing half his games in the Great American Smallpark, will get money….

And V, you are right…I should be more patient…I agree…and I know, I am just some shlub on the web , but…I do think I know what successful teams need to win year after year…teams like the Yankees and Jays…are bit rare these days, but they are able to beat up just about any starting rotation out there. Or at least wear them down to get into teams bullpens.
Of course, the Astros, Angels, Cards, Pirates, also score a lot of runs to go along with their pitching. The Mets, with arguably the best rotation in baseball, were going nowhere til they got some bats. Probably not enough though to get far in the playoffs…They will lose a lot of 2-1 games unless David Wright comes back at some point.

And to watch this team’s braintrust be…spastic…is weird. I mentioned my conspiracy theory to fellow braves fans at trivia last week. I don’t think John Hart has many any of these moves, just went along with them.
He told John Coppolella, you make any and all moves you want, I’ll go along with them, take the heat for them….no normal 67 year old would treat an organization like a fantasy league team!
    Conspiracy theories are fun! 😆

It was getting long, so wanted to post in case something caused the post to get lost…
V, I do get where you are coming from…I really do. They HAD to trade “assets” (Another work right down there with trade pieces in my mind) to get younger, get prospects.
But, I just don’t see any balance. This team has been so lucky to score as much as they have.
Still don’t know who will catch or play LF next year. 2 more months to see if Maybin finally got it at 28, or if this is just a fluke thing.
A new 3rd baseman that is 30 (have I mentioned this fact before? Trading 2 young cheap guys for a…never mind) who is unproven, and with health issues(don’t see him playing 150 games a year, for some reason) rookie 2nd baseman with lots of moxie, zazz, heart, etc…but…how many teams would he be a starter on?
A SS who is a great defender but wildly erratic at the plate. I know you and F.G. don’t care if he hits, but…it’s nice to have a SS that is a presence at the plate.
Glad the Astros don’t tell Carlos Correa (14 Hr’s 36 RBI’s in his first 51 ML games) to just worry about his defense…
Doesn’t look like a championship offense to me. I know, I know…it’s not a finished product…give it time. All those arms will=hitters in trades, just you watch!
Well, accord to Keith Law, teams aren’t trading top 20 overall prospects , even to get a Cole Hamels, so not very likely to get a great hitter back for Folty or Wisler (each with ERA’s north of 4.80) are going to get a difference making hitter back….
That’s what I don’t understand at this point. Now that you have a bunch of arms, trade/draft more hitters than pitchers. The Cubs still drafted more hitters this year, than the braves. Now, they seem to be the mirror opposite of the braves, too hitter heavy. but, they are in the W.C. hunt and are only getting better. Add a David Price or Ceuto next year, and….

Braves, Indians Nearing Nick Swisher Trade
By Steve Adams [August 7, 2015 at 2:04pm CDT]

The Braves and Indians are nearing a trade that will send Nick Swisher to Atlanta, reports Yahoo’s Tim Brown (via Twitter).

The struggling Swisher is currently on the disabled list due to inflammation in his left knee and hasn’t hit much over the past two seasons. Considering the fact that he’s owed $15MM in 2016, it seems like the two sides could be prepping for an exchange of bad contracts, although that’s just my speculation. The amount remaining on the Swisher contract and Chris Johnson‘s contract, though, is very similar. Atlanta could also be absorbing a poor contract as a means of acquiring a well-regarded prospect, as the team did earlier this season in acquiring Bronson Arroyo and Touki Toussaint from the D-Backs.

So many opines, I don’t know where to start…. So, I’ll just throw this out there. Cespedes is so much more than a bat. He can play centerfield with the best of them. He will stay in New York after this season. Just saying. David Write is aging so he will be the right handed bat in their line up.

Latin players age differently. Who knows how old they really are to begin with? It’s almost like talking about dog years or dating sight years… Hey, I understand, my maternal great grandmother had a different age every time they took a census, amazingly, she kept getting younger, just like a Hillary Clinton video, but different?

Anyway, I don’t look for Baltimore to let Davis go or Weiters but A.J is 38 so I think it really depends on the wear and tear sustained over the years. Andruw Jones aged badly just to give an example.

We never know what kid the Braves have stashed away in Panama or the Domincan or just about any other Latin country. The trick is having the eyes out there to spot these youngsters as they come up plus making sure they don’t knock over a 7-Eleven during their formative years. Even then, there are no guarantees, just look at BJ, although Wren really should have recognized one great month does not a career make.

Less than 2% of all pro baseball players will make it to the Hall Of Fame other than as a spectator. So many bad things can happen to derail a career. I thought Ron Gant was going to be a Brave for life until he broke his leg in the off season. The Big Cat having cancer… So many variables come into play, I’m pretty sure the Phillies never thought Ron Howard would suffer from a ruptured achilles tendon. The guy still manages to hit a ton.

Nope, I’m just riding out the storm right now. The Braves threw in the towel with the trade of Juan Urebi and Kelly Johnson. Everything else has been a continuation of that so far. Good teams overcome injuries. Bad teams only get worse when their stars go down.

One final point, while I have not yet put the Oliveras trade for Woods et al in the Lem Barker for Butler and Jacolby or even the Texeria for the Braves farm system category but it might be close. We will just have to wait and see. The Braves still need to add a left fielder who has power and a catcher.

I think Cespedes would go a long way in filling that need but I doubt seriously he will consider going to Atlanta after playing in New York. Just saying…. It will take a lot to persuade him one would think.

I’ve been out all afternoon, so I don’t really know any specifics. But it does appear that they are doing the opposite of deferring expenses. Rather than owe Chris Johnson $16M through 2017, they now owe it to Swisher and Bourn through 2016. Same money, but it in essence frees up the payroll for the unicorn 2017 season.

    It’s all about the money.

BTW- Gil, Cespedes cannot feasibly return to NY.

He has a clause in his contract that stipulates that he must be released after the World Series if an extension with the Mets is not worked out by then. (Technically, it states he must be released before the FA period begins.)

In other words, they would have to convince him not to test the FA market, which we’ve already established is a seller’s market with a major void of hitters. No way he re-signs early and misses out on the dollar derby.

And by the Collective Bargaining Agreement, any player released after Aug. 31 cannot sign a major league deal with that same team until May 15 of the following season.

That said, the prevailing theory is that he will return to Detroit. Still, money talks, so we’ll have to wait and see.

My Math may be wrong, but this is what I just added up….
Swisher, 34, hitting .198 (after hitting .208 last year) is owed including this year, roughly 20 Mil
    Bourn, 32, hitting .246 (.313 OBP, and 13 steals, finally, a leadoff hitter :/ )
    is owed roughtly 17 mil.
So, that’s 37 Mil combined, they are owed.
Cleveland give 10 Mil (pending the commish I assume)
So, braves “only” have to pay 27 Mil.
Johnson is roughly owed 18.5 Mil
So…the braves added 8.5 Mil in contracts for 2 often injured players that clearly aren’t what they once were.
And so far, no news of any prospects headed our way…
Again, don’t quote me on the numbers….just not understanding this deal…but then again, I didn’t understand the Dodgers deal either…what do I know :/

After looking at the reports on this trade, CLE included some cash such that the net $$ effect is $0. They wanted to spread out their expenses a bit and get a guy to play a little 1B. Swisher and Bourn are another couple of “character” guys that will help our youngsters along in 2016 (when Gomes will probably be gone). They’ll also provide a bit of a bridge to 2017.

Not sure on the health of either at the moment. Gotta look. Swisher is hurt, right?

Oh… and Todd Cunningham has been called up. Does this mean that both Swisher and Bourn are hurt?

    Checking…

Swisher is on the DL with a balky knee; Bourn is healthy. I assume Todd is coming up tonight because Bourn cannot be here in time for the game?

    We’ll see.

And it is being speculated that Swisher, if when healthy, is a bench guy/backup 1B. Bourn will probably be the new LF, although he isn’t exactly having a stellar season.

It’s an exchange of contracts of players who fell out of favor with their former teams, and it’s a change of scenery for all involved. In other words, neither team can really lose. And if the proverbial “change of scenery” helps any one of these 3 guys, then it’s a better deal.

    Per DOB:

-> Johnson is owed about $19 million through 2017.

-> Bourn is owed $14 million in 2016 with a $12 million option that vests with 550 plate appearances in 2016. [I highly doubt he gets those 550 PA’s.]

-> Swisher is owed $14 million in 2016 with a $14 million option for 2017 that vests with 550 plate appearances. [No way he will get 550 PA’s.]

-> CLE sent $10M along in the deal to equal out the money.

So the money is a wash, it just gets paid out through 2016 instead of 2017.

From mlbtr…. Both Swisher and Bourn are in the third season of significant four-year pacts ($56MM and $48MM, respectively). Swisher is owed $15MM in 2016, whereas Bourn is owed $14MM next season. Johnson’s contract calls for him to earn $19.5MM through the end of the 2017 season, so the roughly $10MM included by the Indians will balance out the money on the two contracts.

So, they seem to be counting every penny of C.J’s contract, the rest of this year, and the 1 Mil buyout for 2018 ( He is paid 6 mil this year, so roughly 2 mil or less for Aug, Sept, 7.5 in 2016, and 9 Mil in 2017) thats 19.5 Mil, right?
Ok, well… Swisher is owed 15 Mil for next year, true…but, also something just less than 5 mil for this year then, right? So, 20 Mil.
Bourn is getting 13.5 Mil for this year so 4 Plus mil for the rest of 2015, and 14 Mil for next year is well, around 18 mil (Math was messed up before then) so 38 mil, minus 10 mil = 28 mil. Johnson 19.5 mil
    still 8.5 mil….
We always hear so and so team won’t want to pick up the rest of so and so’s contract (those so and so’s) after they are released cuz so and so is paid 6.5 mil for 2015 and they will have to pay 2 mil on their contract…so they are not paid an equal amount over 12 months, correct? that’s about the only way I see it being close to even.
I could be missing something, not a lot of sleep….

Nah. They won’t flip Bourn. I heard an interview with Coppy a little while ago. They like Bourn as a transition OF for 2016. They love his clubhouse and on-field leadership. And he still plays great defense.

Speaking of defense, Todd Cunningham gets the start tonight in LF. I can’t help but wonder if Ham had been in LF Monday for Folty’s last start if any of the 3 wall scrapers would have gone out. The prevailing thought amongst the radio talking heads is that Eury should have had all 3.

Coppy also says that Swisher will be activated tomorrow when he and Bourn get to the park. That means 2 fielders go to Gwinnett. My bet is on Ham and Terdo, although Ham has a shot tonight to impress. Would they send Eury down if Ham makes a couple of stellar defensive plays in LF? Maybe.

I get the sense that Swisher will get time at 1B while Freddie is out. Bourn will go into LF. Bourn/Maybin/Markakis makes a pretty good defensive OF. maybe a homecoming of sorts will jumpstart Bourn’s bat.

looking at it from a different angle, for 2016 the braves are on the hook for $47m between just four outfielders. some nice players there (aside from the injuries). maybin and markakis have been better than i suspected but i wouldn’t call either of them, or the two new additions, game changers. i also wouldn’t say that any of them are “must-see” players that are going to draw more fans at the gate.

perspective: opening payroll for the 2015 team was about $97m. that’s just over half what they will owe those four. wonder who’s still around on opening day of 2016.

Bourn was the target of this trade more for his veteran presence than anything. DOB tweeted last night that the team has already placed his locker and Mallex Smith’s locker side by side at Disney. Swisher is simply an expensive bench piece. That said, he’s supposed to be a good clubhouse guy himself. No question that the goal of this trade was dumping CJ’s contract. But the return is a pretty decent bonus. And everyone has to admit that Bourn is a better option than Eury Perez.

Teheran may finally be maturing into the Ace Frank Wren envisioned. That is the thing about young pitchers, lots of growing pains. Funny how a little success can make a guy (McDowell) go from zero to hero in the eyes of a player.

Now, it was not as if Teheran was fooling ’em early, some hard hit at ’em balls but better than walking the bases full. Make them put them in play is better than tentativeness any day.

Folty takes the mound tonight, let’s see if he can keep them in the park tonight.

Chris, the amount of money being today seems pretty outrageous but it is the prevailing wage in a sport which is hauling in the cash hand over fist. Gone are the days when players had to supplement their income by making appearances at sports shows and conventions selling their autographs for $5 a pop.

No, today’s players nope to make enough so their grand children never have to work. I’m not sure if that is a good or bad thing but it is the way it is. Just like the lottery, for every big winner, there are millions of losers. Worn out arms and shoulders, bad knees and obliques. Guys who have taken long bus rides and living on $5 a day meal money for years hoping for a chance only to see the next million dollar bonus baby jump ahead of them in line.

Now, I am not for income equality, well, not unless I am on the receiving end (all donations appreciated) Think Hillary would mind sending me a check?

On the flip side, I would have preferred to keep Ham and send Eury to AAA, but that’s just me. Ham is far superior on defense. Maybe they want Ham playing everyday, which is a distinct possibility.

Likewise, Castro is being sent back for that very reason… to play everyday, That means Simba is back, or at least close to being back.

I hope CJ gets a chance to play more in Cleveland.

Eury Perez is being given a chance to show what he can do with more playing time. Maybe I should say he was given more opportunities but I am sure the Braves saw the same thing I saw in his having trouble picking up balls off the ground.

Castro has too much to overcome to get to play everyday for Atlanta. Not a bad shortstop but he does not have the arm Simba has. Made a difference last night on an infield hit by the fish.

Mets scored three in the top of the first and the Rays came back with four in the bottom against Syndegaard. Going to be a slugfest methinks… Now 4-4 after Granderson hits his second homer off Bench. Neither pitcher is fooling anyone.

While that is usually when a player begins to decline, he should be serviceable through the end of his contract and when some of the kids should be ready for prime time.

Well, most everyone I guess for the 20th anniversary of the 1995 W.S Champs, cuz we could not find a place to park! Well, a few blocks away, they were going to wave us in to a tiny lot , but between being 5 blocks from the stadium, and getting out at 10-11 pm that far from the stadium….umm, no thanks….so, plan b, David called a friend that lives only a mile or so from the park…perhaps we could drop by their house, drop us off at the stadium, then pick us up after the game! Great idea, but…his friend’s phone died …so, we stopped by, and ended up staying there for hours. Great, warm Christian couple in their 70’s that are the kind of examples we all need more of in today’s world. Just a pleasure to meet them. Same with Jim Johnson, who sports a 29.45 ERA in 4 appearances with the Dodgers, including giving up 8 ER in less than an inning 2 nights ago. Ew.

Woody is sporting a 5.56 ERA in 2 games (11.1 IP) giving up a whopping 13 hits and 5 BB’s. Yowser!

Luis Avilan has only allowed 1 ER in 3.0 IP. Compared to his tenure here, he has improved mightily.

Conversely, young Zach Bird has made 2 starts for AA Mississippi, giving up only 1 ER in 10.2 IP.

I feel compelled to give a report on John Gant and Rob Whalen, the 2 guys we got back from NY in the KJ/Uribe deal. We here nothing about those two. Folks seem to call that a throwaway trade, but those two fellas aren’t scrap.

Gant has made 3 starts for AA Mississippi, and sports an attractive 1.56 ERA. Over 17.1 IP, he has surrendered only 8 hits with 19 K’s to only 6 BB’s. That’s a recipe for success.

Whalen is at high A Carolina, and his numbers are a bit more pedestrian. His 3.29 ERA comes over just 13.2 IP in 3 starts. Over those innings he has tallied only 7 K’s and has given out 4 free passes.

So to summarize, Matt Marksberry misses the bag, opens the gate, and Ryan Kelly releases the hounds? The bullpen strikes again? Is that about right?

Well, for whatever happened, Ryan Kelly was optioned to AAA following the game. No corresponding move has been announced yet. Perhaps top prospect Jason Hursch, who has excelled in the relief role at both AA and AAA since moving from starter to reliever a few weeks ago, will get the call. Maybe old pal Peter Moylan can come back home and give it a whirl. He’s not been bad at AAA. Nah… I expect the suits to continue to audition some of their youngsters to see who has the stuff to stick.

You pretty much nailed it. Michael Bourne continues to hit the ball hard but right at people.

No, the Braves were rolling along merrily and then the bull pen happened, or not, t’was ugly it was… Took the heart out of the team last night.

So, the Nationals bashing has begun… One thing the talking heads hate is to be made to look like fools for predicting a team will aspire to great heights and falling flat.

If the astros ultimately fall flat, no biggie, they were not expected to do well to begin with but woe unto the Mariners, White Sox, Tigers and Padres et al. They were suppose to be contenders but the gNats were everyone’s pre-season favorite to win the World Series.

The Braves are where everyone said they would be. It’s painful because up until the Bravos traded Urebi and K. Johnson, they had a shot. Oh well,

Perhaps, but they really didn’t have enough bullets in their clip to get past anyone of any substance. And they did alright with the deal that sent KJ and Uribe away. John Gant is a nice pitcher to pick up. (Rob Whalen is OK too, but Gant was the premier piece.) He was named to Baseball America’s Prospect Hot Sheet just last week. The kid has been fantastic since coming to the Braves organization. In his 3 starts for AA Mississippi, he’s posted a 1.56 ERA in 17.1 IP, surrendering only 8 hits and notching 19 K’s to only 6 BB’s. That’s good. And of course, he may never bring his show to ATL. He could be flipped in the offseason in a package for a piece that the team really needs, like a catcher. But we’ve beaten that poor horse to a pulp.

I’d be taking alot of time and care with Freddie. I expect Olivera to make a few starts in AAA Gwinnett fairly soon. The G-Braves have a 4 game homestand from 8-20 thru 8-23, which is probably a good timetable to expect. Then he could make his MLB debut with ATL on Monday 8-24 to start a long homestand.

    Timing.

CF Mallex Smith is the real reason that Jose Peraza became tradeable. He’s a true leadoff hitter (a switch hitter, too) with “80 grade” speed. And if you don’t know what I mean by that, scouts grade individual skills on a 10-80 scale. It doesn’t get any better than “80 grade”. From rookie league (2012) through the end of last season, he amassed 169 SB’s in 215 attempts (79%), including 88 last season which led all of MiLB.

He opened this season in AA Pearl and slashed a very attractive .340 AVG on his way to a stellar .418 OBP including 27 BB’s in 241 PA’s over 57 games. After being promoted to AAA Gwinnett, he got off to a fairly slow start but has since regained the form that earned him the midseason promotion. In August, he’s batting .328 w/ .361 OBP.

The Braves think enough of him that they targeted Michael Bourn (and his steep 2016 salary) to mentor Mallex, even assigning them adjoining lockers for next year’s Spring Training.

I don’t think he’ll be ready for The Show as 2016 unfolds, but stranger things have happened. I see him more as a mid-season call-up closer to the trade deadline as the Braves possibly entertain trade offers for either Bourn or Maybin. I fully expect him to be the Braves CF and leadoff hitter when the mythical 2017 season arrives.

RHRP Vin Mazzaro has posted a 0.77 ERA in his 11 games at AAA Gwinnett. He has spent parts of 6 seasons at the ML level with OAK, KC, PIT and MIA before being signed on a minor league deal by ATL back in July.

Maybe he’s the next reliever to hop on the ATL bullpen carousel replacing the demoted Ryan Kelly. We should know this afternoon.

Per various Braves reporters and other sources:

The Braves have signed recently released RHP Edwin Jackson to a Major League contract for the remainder of the 2015 season. The 31-year-old Jackson posted a 3.19 ERA in 31 IP out of the Cubs bullpen before they released him last month. Jackson has a connection with Roger McDowell that dates back to when they were both in the Dodgers organization. He takes the roster spot that was Ryan Kelly’s. While with the Cubs, Jackson , held lefties to a .200 AVG.

Not sure I get this move. In a season that you are admittedly pointing to better fortunes ahead, why bring in a creaky old vet, and one that hasn’t seen much success in recent years? Wouldn’t you do better to give an audition to someone who might actually be around?

Then again, I’m not sure there are any members of the current bullpen aside from Viz and maybe McKirahan that might be around in 2017. Maybe John thinks EJax can be a reliable setup guy. Who knows? I just find a bit surprising.

    Like

  321. 328 Vox O'Reason August 14, 2015 at 3:29 pm

Well, EJax isn’t exactly creaky… but still.

Going forward, the real point of emphasis for 2016 has to be the bullpen. I know that sounds odd to say with the longstanding offensive funk, but look at the team as it is currently constituted. All 4 IF positions are settled with Freddie, Petey, Andy and Ollie. (Hopefully Oliie can help provide a jolt, and getting Freddie back will certainly be an improvement.)

Then you take a swing out into the OF and find Marky, SpiderMaybin and Bourny… all under contract for 2016. OK, only Marky really figures to be a lock heading into the new park in 2017. And Cameron Maybin could be traded before this month is up, but there’s not alot of shopping to be done. And quite honestly, there is not a very good market from which to shop.

Ah… and there’s the trick. The Braves positional improvement must come via the trade market. That’s where the stockpile of pitching prospects comes into play.

Some folks say that Betty has not yet fully fallen out of the Braves’ future plans, but I do not count myself among that group. As well as he’s hitting in AAA, I still think he’s a goner before ST 2016. I think the Braves will not risk exposing him to the ML grind again in an effort to preserve whatever trade value he currently holds.

So the Braves will certainly look to solidify the C position this offseason. But John must also look to rebuild a bullpen that has at best been described as atrocious. You can probably attribute at least 10 games to bullpen implosion this year. Maybe more.

I think you can probably count on Jason Hursh contending for a bullpen spot next year. He could be a valuable piece as a setup, 8th inning guy. Former Dodgers closer Chris Withrow should be back at full strength prior to ST 2016, as should LH Paco Rodriguez. With Viz, Hursh, Withrow and Paco, you have a decent base of pitchers. And if McKirahan can be an effective lefty, you’re only a couple of long relievers away from vast improvement. Maybe that’s why John (and Roger) want to see what EJax has left in the tank.

One more thing they must do is sign a veteran starter. As cool as it is to have such a “young and talented” rotation, we need a veteran presence to anchor it. We also need a LH. Maybe ManBan is back next season, but maybe not. We’re dealing with loose fragments in his post-TJ elbow. So it could be all good, or it could be disaster. I don’t think the Braves ought to go into 2016 throwing dice. Sign the lefty veteran starter and let your youngsters provide depth.

Also, I won’t be surprised to see Julio traded in the offseason. He’s a heckuva pitcher when the good Julio shows up. He’s tough to watch when the bad Julio shows up. Somebody will want him bad enough to give some positional talent. I still like Julio, Betty and a pitching prospect to Milly for Lucroy.

And in case you’re wondering, the Cubs are on the hook for the lion’s share of EJax’s contract. The Braves will only have to pay him a prorated portion of the $507,000 major league minimum… which would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $250,000. I wouldn’t mind that neighborhood, personally.

Wow, I miss a beautiful day today… Pesky sleep… Oh well, naps are good too….

Now baseball, looking at the current Braves roster, there needs to be an improvement in talent for this team to contend. Period…. More power from somewhere.

The bullpen? Well, we all know what happened when the homeboy upstairs try to trade for bullpen arms and ended up with Texiera. I guess the key is consistent improvement. Is Jace Peterson really the Braves best option at second or is he just so much better than who the Braves have run out there in the past? He is still young but I still see him more of a super utility guy than an everyday player.

Left field and third base are the traditional power spots in your line up. Maybe Oliveria is going to be the guy, the Braves seem to think so. That leaves left field. I agree, I think Cameron will be traded to make room. Maybe even be included in a package for a catcher. I don’t see A.J. holding up for another full season. It is hard to imagine him holding up for the rest of this one. Likely we will see Bethencourt in September,

from mlbtr….don’t get the reasoning, I get wondering if he will be a true ace or not, but to trade because of a reasonable contract is still too much for 2017?

The Braves have been making an effort to shed contracts that reach beyond the 2016 season, and Heyman writes to “look for them to take offers on Julio Teheran” this offseason. Clearly, Atlanta would be selling low on a talented arm that comes with a very reasonable contract. Teheran signed a six-year, $32.4MM extension prior to the 2014 season, but he’s logged a 4.57 ERA due in part to diminished control in 2015.

I must confess, friday night’s game against the Diamond Backs was one of the most entertaining games I have watch in quite a while. Teheran had it working. Lively fast ball, breaking off the table slider and a wicked curve ball. Just stellar. The offense was timely and Maybin made a great catch in centerfield that was labeled double all the way. The game was a little on the longish side but had something for everyone. I just wished I could have viewed the fireworks after the game.

Anyone scouting Julio would have to have been very impressed. Heck, the Braves have to be duly impressed. After all, he is only 24 years old.

Ber, Heyman was just sharing an opinion. I don’t think the Braves are shopping Julio, nor do I think they will shop him just for the sake of shedding his contract, which is pretty reasonable. But I do think they would listen if the return was something they need or want, like a Lucroy or similar. They will deal pitching of some sort to gain the offensive pieces they still need. And as the old adage says: you have to give quality to get quality. But again I emphasize, I don’t believe they are shopping him.

And I’ll say again, because I think it’s true, they’ll listen on anyone not named Freeman, Simmons or Miller (you might could even add Wisler to the list). Of course, they might hang up quickly, too…

Folks, I think we sometimes forget how important it is to have a master craftsman around in order to use the tools he is given to mold a successful product. The Padres are a perfect example. Most of the talent the Braves have acquired has come from the Fathers. The results for them has been abysmal even though they have more “talent” on the field.

The same could be said of the gNats. Hey, I like Matt Williams but one has to wonder if he has control of the team or if someone else is pulling the strings.

I won’t say how bad Saturday’s game was but Sunday’s game was outstanding, despite the fact Shelby was again denied a victory. Great win for those who stuck around until the tenth inning. I really thought Michael Bourn had won it in the ninth but was again robbed. At some point, those balls are going to start falling in.

Some bright spots in the bullpen, Aardsma? who saw that coming. Jackson looked like an ace and good for Peter Moylan. A long and circuitous route back to the majors for him. I wonder if he still carries his roo nads in his pocket for good luck? They were not so lucky for the kangaroo…..

DOB reported yesterday that the Braves are having internal discussions concerning Mike Minor returning for 2016.

He hasn’t picked up a ball since having surgery in May to repair a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder, but he is supposed to begin light throwing in September.

Indications are that if he is interested in returning for a salary under the $5M he took… er, “earned” this season, the Braves would be interested in retaining him.

OK, that is a little unfair since the guy didn’t exactly choose to be hurt. But still, it does leave a bit of a bad taste in one’s mouth when a guy takes his team to arb over a seemingly small amount when he’s hurt. Just settle and go get healthy, ya know? But I don’t know. I suppose if you are a pitcher and are having shoulder issues, there is probably enough fear over having any earning ability that you may have to get all you can while you can.

At any rate, the guy was pretty good when he was healthy, and the Braves have certainly shown a propensity (FOB?) to roll the dice on pitchers with health issues. It’s kinda like shopping at yard sales, just different.

As we’ve said on here more than a few times, the Braves need a veteran LH pitcher (Minor is a veteran by the Braves current standards) to slot into their 2016 rotation, and Minor fits the profile if he’s healthy. If they can bring him in under $5M for 2016, it’s likely a better risk than they can find on the open market for twice that much on a dude in his decline who may not be able to pitch into September.

We will take a “wait and see” approach on this one.

Speaking of rehabbing pitchers, the Braves apparently gave their beat reporters an update on Minor plus a couple others yesterday. Here is the poop on a the others, courtesy of Mr. O’B:

“Chris Withrow, recovering from June 2014 TJ and December back surgery, doing well but not expected to pitch this season.”

“Rule 5 pick Daniel Winkler [will] pitch in fall or winter league to prep for ’16 season. He’s recovering from June 2014 TJ surgery.”

And finally, top pitching prospect Tyrell Jenkins, whom I honestly thought we might see in ATL in September, was pulled for precautionary reasons from his start Sunday after just 2 innings. It was reported after the game that he felt fine physically, but he was placed on the DL with the common condition called “dead arm”. Arm fatigue would be a better description, though. The team conducted several strength and structure tests following the game, and Jenkins passed them all indicating that there is no injury issue.

The arm fatigue isn’t at all surprising as he’s pitched way more innings this season than ever before. Thus far in 2015, he’s tossed 136.2 innings in 24 starts. That is compared to 98.1 IP in 2014, his former carer high. That’s a pretty steep step up.

The Braves have a tightly structured scale that they follow with their developing pitchers, and Jenkins was already approaching his 150 IP limit for 2015. The intention is for him to rest for a couple turns through the rotation, then return for a couple more in September to reach his 150 IP goal. Then they can aim for 180 IP in 2016, some of which may occur in ATL.

One more comment on our pitching, then I must return to my own “rotation”.

I have grown tired of the Williams Perez high wire act. Early in the season it was kinda cool to see him continuously wiggle off the hook with runners all over the place, but his wiggle ceased when he came off the DL. When we walked the rookie pitcher last night, allowing the inning to continue and eventually became a crooked number inning, I was done.

I’ll give credit where credit is due and give him that he’s a pretty cool cat under pressure. And he has a wicked left->right breaking ball. But it was evident after his first time through their lineup that they were sitting on the breaking ball and scalding his fastball, which isn’t fooling anyone. If I could see it, you know the Padres could see it. And I’m sure that the “book” is out and every team knows how to approach him.

The problem is, there isn’t anyone in the organization to tap and replace him with. Truth be told, Folty, set to make his next start in the friendly confines of Wrigley Field in a couple of days, really should be continuing his development at AAA. But we need him up here. No other alternatives. So here he is. And if he doesn’t tighten up that flat slider, there will be a lot of baseballs on Waveland Ave. Thursday. He’s got the pitch, he just hasn’t perfected it yet. By his own admission, he’s trying to bury it down and away to RH batters but sometimes it just flattens and hangs. When it works it’s a great pitch; when it doesn’t it’s a cookie. Isn’t that what AAA is for? Isn’t AAA for ironing out the kinks in your repetoir? Demanding times…

VOX, this is a year like 1989 and 1990 as far as pitching goes for the Braves. The front office knows that any win is gravy at thus point but realistically, it is on the job training for for all those young studs.

Williams is a pitcher who will have to rely on location. He does not have a 97 mph heater for an out pitch. Folty is still trying to harness that cannon of an arm he has. he is a lot like Visciano two or three years ago. Julio is looking better to me every time out. The sweeping slider and lively fastball are electric.

Minor might not really be ready until next July. Takes more than 12 months to come back from shoulder surgery. We’ll have to wait and see how serious the Braves are about wanting to keep him. One would have to think the Braves may be one of the few teams that might actually take a chance on him.

One more thought about Williams. Think Tom Glavin…. Same type of pitcher. He needs to learn not to fall in love with his change up. Go to that well too often and opposing hitters sit on it. A wide strike zone helps too. Last night he just left too many pitches up. It is part of the growing pains I guess.

The art of pitching is going by the wayside, look at Justin Verlander. he was Cy Young but his arm wore out… long before his contract I might add, He could still be an effective pitcher but only if he figures out how to get batters out without throwing a 97 mph fastball. Arms are getting worn out at an alarming rate. I guess the lesson is not to give a 10 year contract to a hurler.

BTW- At AAA, he has 25 SB’s in 29 attempts in only 48 games, proving that speed NEVER slumps.

I think it’s possible, but doubt it. If the Braves were making a push for a playoff spot, his speed would be a tremendous asset off the bench. Obviously that ain’t happenin’. Not sure what contributions he could make this year. There is the remote possibility that the FOT’s may simply want to expose him to ML life so that his first callup next year won’t be as big a culture shock. I doubt it though.

Gwinnett is making their own playoff push with a possibility of extending their season. Certainly that would impact any potential September callups. But I would imagine the eventual callups will be mostly limited to a couple of ‘pen arms plus Bcourt and Terdo, who will most likely be sent down today when Freddie is activated. Maybe THam too.

Y’all have no idea how huge the temptation is for me to begin speculating on rosters and lineups for 2016, but it seems a bit silly right now given the aggressiveness the front office has displayed. There’s no way of knowing who’s even going to be in the organization when ST2016 opens.

Beginning with the bullpen, I think we can eliminate about 4 name right off the bat. Just saying. They may or may not move Swisher, Maybin and Bourne depend on who and what they are offered in return.

One has to wonder if Bethancourt is even in the organization next season. Yep, lots of moving parts to be discussed.

2015 = rebuilding year. I don’t get too wrapped up in any game, win or loss. I enjoy moments
Very true, a rebuilding year…and it’s funny….If I miss a game, and no matter how bad the barves do (typed it that way, gonna leave it) no matter how bad you or Gil tell me the team looked…it just isn’t the same as seeing them fall on their faces. I can easily be detached if I miss the game, but seeing them look like an average AAA team….with no bright spots in the lineup save a 38-39 year old catcher and a CF’er that may or may not be her next year….
Sure, some real hope in the rotation no doubt….But even with a healthy Freeman…this lineup is so far away from being able to compete, it ain’t even funny…another can’t miss speedy guy(after trading away the previous one) and a 30 year old never in the bigs rookie…just don’t thrill me…
Now, I looked up Olivera and how the Dodgers were trying to figure out what to do with him since Turner was the best hitter in their lineup….and saw a photo that shows he’s a really big “kid” Perhaps they are purposely underselling what they hope/expect…instead of 15-20 HR’s and .275/285…if he is more a 25-30 HR’er guy, who can drive in 90+ then, I will of course be more excited about the trade….
Something to look forward to in a lost season….

    AJP, courtesy of AJC:

“We have a young team obviously, especially in the pitching staff,” veteran catcher A.J. Pierzynski said. “I don’t know what the numbers say, but they probably pitch better at home than they have on the road. [The Braves are 2-17 with a 5.53 ERA in their past 19 road games, compared to 19-11 with a 3.22 ERA in their past 30 home games.] It’s a comfort factor. It’s a routine. But we work with these guys and we’re trying, and they’ll get better.

“I just think they’re trying to figure it out at the big-league level. They’re learning a lot, and you can see them processing it all. Especially Wisler, Folty and a lot of guys coming out of the bullpen. They’ve never been in this situation, they’ve never been in any of these stadiums, they’ve never seen half these guys. So they’re trying to figure it out. They’re doing a good job and I’m proud of them.”

Early tilt today, good folks. 3:40pm here on the east coast. Good news is that Freddie is back. (Can you believe that he has played in only 10 of the last 56 games? Big reason for the nosedive.)

Now, Julio takes the mound. Will we get Good Julio or Bad Julio? Who the heck knows? He pitches so much better at home, but does have a couple of dominating road games under his belt. Not many, but a couple. Hopefully we get Good Julio and Freddie and can avoid getting swept.

Good Julio gave us 6 good innings and left with a lead. Then the bullpen…

FrediG said they debated running Julio back out for the 7th inning. Here’s my advice to FrediG: If there’s ever a debate over bringing a middle reliever in for the starter, DON’T.

Marksberry gives up the tying run before even recording an out. Then the amiable Aussie has to come in and get out of the inning. Veteran EJax has to restore order in the 8th. Suddenly he’s the only reliable arm out of the pen except for new closer Viz, who’s actually been very good when given save opportunities. Not many save opportunities on the road.

Couple of things to bear in mind…

Braves open a 4 game series in Wrigley tonight (8:05 ET) with Folty on the mound. The Cubs have a terrific young roster of hitters, and they don’t call it “the friendly confines” for nothing. This is not to cast any negative projections onto our young flame thrower, but he is a youngster still honing his craft. This could well be a short outing for him.

My point? Well, Fredi had to trot out 3 relievers yesterday: Marksberry who got torched, Moylan who is 36 yo and back from multiple surgeries, and EJax who pitched a full inning for the 2nd consecutive night. It’s possible that none of those 3 would be available for tonight’s tilt. That would leave us with 2 loogies, Aardsma and our closer.

What I’m getting at is I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility for the bullpen carousel to take another turn before tonight’s game. Given the presence of 2 other lefties in the pen, plus his recent ineffectiveness, Marksberry seems the easiest candidate to be sent down.

Recently signed RH Danny Burawa (claimed off waivers from NYY last Friday) is a possible choice to provide help as he is already on the 40-man roster. Why would they so quickly place him on the 40-man if they didn’t intend to utilize him at some point?

Of course, they could always choose to go down the Jake Brigham or Ryan Kelly paths again. I wouldn’t. 😛

    Related to the above post…

Bullpen loogie Andrew McKirahan is a Rule 5 guy, so the Braves have to keep him on the 25-man roster for the rest of 2015 or offer him back to MIA. That won’t happen. And fellow lefty Ross Detwiler is out of options. Marksberry could simply find himself a victim of numbers regardless of his recent struggles.

Other than the first inning, I thought Julio pitches a whale of a game. Had he not thrown so many pitches to begin the game, he might well have gone into the eight inning.

To be sure, this is not the O’Ventrable bullpen of just a few short years ago. Even guys like Moylan and et al have shown us time and time again, if you over work your pen, you will have issues longer than just a week or so or even going into September.

Relief pitchers are human being too. The wear out much faster than we would like.

Okay, Cub fans deserve a winning season or two before the whole thing falls in on their heads again.

On Arrietta… He has not yet faced the formidable Atlanta line up so his stats could be skewed…. 🙂

The G-Braves have a 4 game homestand from 8-20 thru 8-23, which is probably a good timetable to expect. Then he could make his MLB debut with ATL on Monday 8-24 to start a long homestand.

Freeman on Olivera, after having spent some time with him recently (courtesy of DOB):

“He’s a big boy. He can put on a show in BP. I only saw the six at-bats in GCL; it’s hard to judge off that. But he looks good. He looks like he’s going to be an intimidating figure in the box, he’s a big guy. I think he’s still feeling for it coming back from the hamstring, so it’s hard to tell. But I think he’s going to be a run-producer in the middle of the lineup.”

“In the GCL he lined out a couple of times to right field. He looks good. It’s just more at-bats and get his timing again, that’s all it is.”

“He’s filled out, he’s a big boy. He’s super strong. Remember Barbaro Canizares? (Another Cuban and a former Braves minor league first baseman, who was listed at 6-3 and 240 pounds.) He kind of looks like him, to me. I think Hector’s going to hit for power.”

    Prospect watch:

I just took a peek at the new prospect rankings for the Braves and noticed an interesting movement. Dustin Peterson, the “other Peterson” that came to us in the Justin Upton deal to SD, has worked his way into the Top 15 at #15. He’s a guy that was a 2B/3B in SD’s system, but was immediately moved to LF after the trade. He’s young at only 20, but the Braves like his “raw power”. The only problem is that “raw power” often equates to alot of K’s, and he Dustin does get his share of those. Still, he’s just at Class A Carolina, so he has plenty of time to mature. I’ll be interested to see if he makes the step to AA Pearl next season, and to see what he can do there.

And since you brought up last night…

AJP has stated on record that the Braves’ struggles on the road can be attributed to the extreme youth of the pitching staff. Maybe he’s overstating it a bit, but I do think he’s onto something. Last night is a great example.

Have you seen the sequence of pitches that got FrediG tossed? (By the way, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen FrediG that angry and animated while chewing some umpire butt.) Anyway, back to the pitches…

Young Folty is hitting the inside black, and the ump is giving him nothing. So he goes to the outside black, and he gets nothing. Folty is visibly upset on the mound. I saw the pitches, and all were borderline. But if you’re gonna squeeze on one side, you can’t on the other side. What was Folty’s response? Right… nothing left to do but leave a cookie over the middle of the plate. And it cost him dearly.

First, a veteran pitcher would probably get some of those calls. Second, a veteran pitcher would know how to handle being squeezed. On the job training is tough. Folty took a tough one for the team last night.

I’m a little surprised that AJP didn’t get himself tossed as well. He must have mellowed a little in his advanced age.

I would have liked for him to call a high fastball and to have it get by his glove. 😉 One of Folty’s 99 mph heaters would certainly rattle a cage.

OK, you’re right… that was bad. Forgive me, Lord.

A little good news, for what it’s worth, from the Braves camp this weekend, courtesy of DOB:

There’s a chance that catcher Christian Bethancourt rejoins the Braves sooner. Bethancourt has hit well during a long stint at Triple-A Gwinnett — .327 with 23 exra-base hits (four homers) in 52 games — and the Braves plan to recall him soon and have him on their roster the rest of the season.

My question is this: What do you do with the other 2 catchers? All indications are that the Braves have no plans to trade AJP and in fact would like to have him back for 2016. And Ryan Lavarnway, who homered yesterday and has been a very good BUC, is out of options and cannot be sent down without being DFA’d and going through the waiver process. He would most certainly be claimed off waivers by someone.

I suppose one possibility is to trade Jonny Gomes (as has been rumored) and have Betty take that roster spot and simply carry 3 catchers. There is currently a glut at LF anyway with Gomes, Bourn, Perez and Swisher all needing playing time. Gomes has passed through waivers and could be traded before Aug. 31. There is probably a team out there somewhere who could use a little RH pop off the bench for a playoff run. Or failing that, if you really can’t wait another 8 days, send Perez down. That may be the easiest answer.

Couldn’t you just wait until Sept. 1 when rosters expand? For that matter, why not just wait until then to bring Olivera up as well?

Well, that was better. Well pitched by Julio, well caught by Betty, well played by the team… (until the 8th inning. I’ll get to that in another post, though. This one is the positive one.)

Nicky with another 3 hit game… Viz showing that he has become a pitcher, and not a thrower… Jonny propping his value to another team… best of all was how Julio pitched. Jim Powell and Mark Lemke noted especially that he kept on the attack, even after giving up the HR’s. That’s something he did not do earlier in the year. If he got tagged, he’d become defensive. But that’s part of a pitcher’s maturity, and he’s showing it. When he is in control of the game, he really is in control.

    Now the bad…

I was elated that FrediG let Julio go back out for the 8th inning even though he was right at about 100 pitches. But when he gave up the broken bat single, I started saying to the TV “Don’t come out Fredi; don’t come out Fredi; don’t come out Fredi.” Then when I saw his little round head pop up from the dugout. I started yelling, “Leave him in Fredi! Leave him in Fredi!”

He took him out and brought in Detwiler. I cringed.

I looked at Mrs. Vox and said, “This 3 run lead is now in mortal danger.”

Of course, Adonis proceeded to misplay the following bunt, but I can almost give him a pass there. He was being aggressive, and I have a hard time being angry over a guy committing an error being aggressive. Still, it was a mental lapse. But it was nothing compared to the mental lapse by EJax. He almost got out of the inning with one pitch, if he had started the DP as he fielded a tailor-made DP ball. And if not for the strong throw from ageless Michael Bourn in LF on the subsequent hit, which was seemingly destined to happen, we could well be lamenting another bullpen collapse.

Well, it was exciting if nothing else.

Lost in the details was another dominating outing by Vizcaino. He’s got filthy stuff now that he can control his FB. Closer suits him very well. He’s got a 99 mph heater and a knee buckling slider. That’s a recipe that worked pretty well for a guy named Kimbrel… and another guy named Smoltz. And it’s working quite well for Viz. I think we may have found something there.

Last comment on last night’s game…

Jonny did well in his showcase. I really think he’ll be traded in the next day or so.

I also think we are starting to get a sense of what the 2016 edition might look like. Once Hector Olivera arrives, we’ll be close. In my gut, I believe Cameron Maybin will be traded over the offseason and Bourn will return to CF, but otherwise the 2016 starting 8 could soon be on the field together for the last 5 weeks.

Not the bullpen. It’s still a cobbled together mess. Viz is a lock, but the rest will be blown up.

Most of the rotation is probably there too. Maybe all of it, but certainly 4 of the 5. I kinda of think next year’s rotation could be Shelby, Julio, veteran LH, Wisler, Folty. Williams Perez will be depth at AAA, and ManBan will begin again in AAA to continue his rehab.

Don’t let the final score fool you. When they say there were 4 unearned runs, they truly were. Adonis, who has looked pretty solid at times at 3B, looked live a sieve last night. We’re talking routine plays right under the glove… 3 times. And that directly led to 4 unearned runs. As for Folty, he looked pretty darn good. FrediG says he has shown more improvement than any pitcher on the staff, and I have to concur. Early in the year, he was too aggressive. In his second callup, he started out too calm. Now he has found his happy zone in between, and it’s a good place. He has filthy stuff when he’s on top of it.

As for run #5, that came from 2 walks, a wild pitch, and a hit against Matt Marksberry, who needs to follow the trail out of the door blazed by Aardsma.

And once again, the hitters from both teams were dealing with a floating strike zone, especially late in the game. I don’t know what the plate ump was watching, but he missed a pretty good game. That was about as bad as I’ve seen in a while.

For Gil, the recap of last night:

    Folty encouraging.
    Adonis discouraging.
    Markakis raking.
    Home plate ump hallucinating.
    Marksberry sucking.
    Braves losing.

It should be noted that the G-Braves played Hector in LF last night. What do we read from that? Not sure. I will say this much… now is the time for full assessment. If he’s not comfortable at 3B, John needs to know it now, and not in ST.

Why would I say that? Well, he played mostly 2B for the Cuban Nat’l team. He played mostly 2B and some LF with the Dodgers. He was shifted to 3B by the Braves. I have heard rumblings that his “delayed” arrival is due more to his discomfort at 3B than his timing at the plate. I also know that the Braves brought in their roving IF instructor over the weekend to specifically work with him.

Make no mistake. He was acquired for his offense and not his defense. They want his bat in the lineup. And if that means in LF, then that’s where it’ll be. And as I said earlier, they need to know now so that they can address 3B in the offseason.

Hector being in LF last night mean nothing at all. That’s his final position destination anyway. John has gone on record as saying as much. Rio Ruiz is still viewed as the 3B of the future. I would think Hector will be back at 3B tonight. Nonetheless, it’ll all become clearer in the next 5 weeks.

Still in limbo here so I watched the Yankees get schooled by the Astros. T’was funny to hear how the Astros were so over matched by the superior players in pinstripes. Did I mention Evan Gattis hit his 20th homerun and had an additional 2 RBI single?

I followed the Braves’ game as best I could on gameday but that leaves a lot of unanswered questions… I prefer to see the games live so as to get the real feel for the game.

On Olivera, Left field is as good a spot as any for a power bat. I’m sure Adonis has been looking over his shoulder and might explain why he can’t make the plays. I seen the yips before and your assessment sure describes the symptoms.

Freebird has not hit worth a hoot since the wrist problem first flared… Shade of Grady Sizemore.

Evan Gattis hits two more solo home runs in the Astros’ triumph over the Yankees last evening. Why does that make me smile? I’m sure the Astros are pretty happy they made that trade.

Nats are fading fast, now 6 1/2 games behind the red hot Mets. While the Nats will say they have plenty of time to catch up, the Mets are looking stronger and I don’t see them yielding much if any ground to Washington.

So, the Braves are unsure about their Cuban superstar’s ability to hold down the hot corner position… Okay, then why push him off to we faithful fans as the next Atlanta third sacker? Ho hum, Ron Gant did not do so hot at third base either… I think there will be lots of opportunities for folks to be traded from Atlanta this winter.

Off day for the Braves today I think. Gives them time to plan how to welcome back B-Mac….

I heard that report from one radio guy, but nothing else I’ve seen has mentioned it or even hinted at as much. In fact, now that I think about it, the guy on the radio that I heard it from has hated the trade from day 1 and won’t let go of the early reports of elbow trouble. Nothing, and I repeat, NOTHING has shown any indication that the guy’s elbow has been problematic in the least.

I should have known better. That is a perfect example of me hearing a guy say something, and failing to verify or back it up on my own.

I really think that Bowman’s assessment of Olivera is a better indicator as to why we haven’t seen him yet:

When you subtract the games he has played at the Rookie and Class A levels, Olivera has totaled just 19 games in the Minor Leagues in the U.S. The Braves have viewed this recent rehab stint as Olivera’s Spring Training and thus are not overly concerned that he entered Wednesday with just five hits in 25 at-bats since joining Triple-A Gwinnett.

In that same piece, he quotes John Hart, “We’re just going to have to do the right thing with [Olivera]. The guy is a good hitter and he’s going to hit and he should hit. This guy has never played in the big leagues and he just hasn’t had the reps really over the last year and a half. He looks great and he’s strong, But it’s just the day-to-day grind that he hasn’t done.”

I encourage that we be patient. I encourage that we hold at least the same amount of patience as the Braves are showing. I get that it’s difficult given that we gave up guys that were and are contributing at the Major League level. (Well, at least Alex Wood has contributed. Luis Avilan has sucked on both coasts. Jim Johnson has both sucked and been hurt since the trade, and thus has been a non-factor.)

That’s a pretty good article, CL, and fairly accurate. But we really must keep things in the proper perspective. What makes that so very difficult is that the Braves are in a unique place… they really haven’t done this in 25 years. My house isn’t that old. My marriage isn’t that old.

Rebuilding is nothing new. Every team must go through it periodically. And that’s truly what makes the Braves unique. Somehow they have managed to avoid this type of season since 1990.

1990… staggering. There is an entire generation of “fans” that have never witnessed this before, and that’s part of the problem. In an era of perception vs. reality, an entire generation has not witnessed nor experienced anything other than the Braves at or near the top. And people don’t know how to react. They are losing their collective mind. Thus, this eventuality is hard to swallow.

I get it. I don’t like it either. But struggling through a losing season with a direction and a plan is much better than doing this perpetually like the powder blue Braves did from the 70’s through the 80’s year in and year out. Houston is a perfect example. They were doormats for a handful of seasons before breaking through this year. the Braves “plan” is designed to shorten that painful part to just 1 really bad year, followed by a year to build momentum, followed by the year of excitement – 2017.

Will it happen? We’ll see, won’t we? But I trust the architects. The guys at the very top have done it before. They got the band back together and got back to work. The guys pulling the strings were hand picked. This is pain with a purpose.

Think of it as labor pain. The payoff is worth it… right?

You’re right as usual, V. I remember “those” years all too well. I think part of the problem is that we are so accustomed to seeing the Braves at the top or near the top of the heap, it’s rather disturbing to see them at the bottom. It upsets the balance of the earth’s rotation or something. 🙂

When the Braves look back at their rebuilding project, this past weekend might well be the nadir of that process. They not only got beat by the Stankees but for the most part, looked bad doing it…. Okay, maybe Wisler’s start was just an ordinary loss but it was more than made up for.

Who knew their were so many Yankee fans living amonst the natives of Braves Country. Oh well, Liberty Media says all those Yankee greenbacks go into the cofers just fine. It is the Miami and Tampa Bay model, Spend as little as possible and clean up when the big boys come to town.

V, really do appreciate your positivity, and it does help keeping negative Nellies in check (not sure Gil wants to be lumped in with me there 😉 )

So…take everything I am going to say with a grain of salt, or after salt was freshly applied to new wounds, ok?

A few days ago, you were talking up Lucas Sims who might be the best of all the young pitchers…my reaction? Yawn…Berigan, why do you yawn at the news of a hot young pitching prospect? I don’t know…dudes dig the longball too? :/ But Berigan, we had a home run hittin’ teams the previous 2 years, and where did that get us? I know, I know…team was unbalanced.
Wanted to be the Blue Jays 2015, but they just weren’t that talented/disciplined…I get that…I get that the team needed to be “Retooled” (Funny, these days teams will NEVER say they are rebuilding, when clearly, that is what the braves are doing, a complete and total rebuild) and it can be painful….
So, Berigan, while I am asking you questions, what is your beef?

Well…while I can see where the rotation is going to be better in the near future…..I didn’t get trading away a solid 24 Y.O. leftie for a guy that will be 31(with no MLB experience) when the 2016 season starts. (Josh Donaldson is 29)
Oh by the by, Jose Peraza, who will be 22 when next season starts, was called up again, and went 2 for 4 sat, with a double, 2 steals and scored 2 runs…
Berigan, you beat that dead horse weeks ago! I know, I know!

I just don’t see where the offense will come from, come next year and in 2017.
The 2016 outfield? Michael Bourn, Mallex Smith (if ready) and Nick M.
there is an outfield that might hit 30 HR’s….might….this team has 3 players with a shot at 60 RBI’s FF should do it, if healthy.

Compare the braves offensive talent, verses say…the Chicago Cubs.
What braves position players would you pick over the cubs position players? Simmons I guess, for his glove. Thoroughly average bat. Addison Russell is supposed to be the next Barry Larkin, he ain’t just yet(more homers than Simmons this year, 9 ) …. Maybin over Dexter Fowler I guess…that’s about it…
Pitching is what wins games berigan, it’s the name of the game! Well, the Mariners in 2014 had great pitching, didn’t make the playoffs.
The Cubs only have one great pitcher (from a statistical side, this year) but are 74-55…

Lets look at a random, very good braves team…the 1998 team. Granted, Roids and all, but we don’t know if anyone was on them (rumors about Javy, but never proven)
    Chipper 34 Hr, 107 RBi’s .
    Andruw Jones, 31 HR’s 90 RBI’s
    Michael Tucker 14 Hr’s,
    Gerald Williams 10HR 44 RBI’s , in 289 AB’s

Is it fair to compare the braves now, to the 106 game winning team of 1998?
No…but, I did it anyway 😉 (that team still didn’t make it to the W.S. )

What I see on the field right now…is embarrassing.
A team that was fairly fun to watch a month or so ago…is gone. worthless bullpen . Nearly worthless offense (Imagine if AJP was hitting like a typical 38 Y.O. Catcher what the offense would be like)

And unlike the 90’s and early 2000’s the teams are much better , overall. The Marlins could be the next team to click in 2016. The Mets have the best Rotation since Smotlz, Glavine and Maddux, only they have 5 great starters, come next year. And, they still are acting like a small market team…wait til they finally open the wallets.
I have no idea what to make of the Nats. On paper, they should have run away with things. I imagine Matt Williams will be gone next year. But, even losing an arm or two, they have money….they will be in the mix.

It will be interesting to see what the braves can do this offseason ….not going to get many top flight free agents to come to ATL with a small budget and a 90 loss team on the field…so, it will have to be done via trades…but, we hear teams don’t want to trade offense these days….

So, you may have to draft offense then…but, the braves still drafted more arms than bats. (Cubs drafted more bats again this year)

I just don’t see light at the end of this tunnel. The braves fans are fickle.
Liberty already claimed poverty attendance this year, so far? (And I don’t believe it’s this high, honestly) 1,612,228 (13th of 15)
Less next year….less money…they can claim all they want that they have no real restrictions (just like they weren’t rebuilding, just re-tooling) But, I beg to differ..oh won’t you please let me differ? 😛

BTW- Did y’all hear that we picked up a pretty good IF prospect from KC last night? He’s a youngster that plays all over the IF and has a fantastic bat. I’ll come back and give a little more info on the kid a bit later. And I hope that Jonny Gomes gets a World Series ring. What a great person he is. He left an indelible imprint on this group of misfits that won’t be forgotten in their careers. He might be exactly what KC needs to get them over the hump. I might even go buy a KC hat. I’ll have to think about that. Maybe in October, after the Braves regular season has ended. Can’t split my loyalty, ya know.

Sure you can VOX, I have been watching Houston with a bit of regularity lately. Gattis is still da man…

DOB had a very good opine in the AJC today, ya’ll should take a peek. It is spot on with our observations and as all always, our travails….

Hey, if it is all about the future now, the Braves are inching ever closer to a top draft pick next summer…

Their last top ten pick is doing very nicely for the Mets this season out of the pen…

Today is Sept. 1. We already know that Manny Banuelos will be activated and start tonight’s game. Hopefully FrediG will get about 50-55 pitches out of him. Edwin Jackson could piggyback him. Otherwise it’s Johnny AllStaff to follow. Good thing the rosters expand today. Hopefully much anticipated Hector Olivera makes his debut. Expectations are going to be high. Don’t read too much into one game. It’s a just one pixel on a large display.

The new kid on the block, IF Luis Valenzuela was hitting .339/.368/.483 with 3 HR’s in 47 games at Low-A Lexington. Factor in 8 early games in Rookie ball and his season looks like this: 55 games, 221 PA’s, slashing .364/.385/.502. He’s a 22-year-old LH hitting IF that plays 2B, SS and 3B. He’s spent 60% of it at 2B. He isn’t a top 30 prospect, but he’s still a youngster with plenty of time to develop. Maybe he will; maybe he won’t. Maybe he’s a piece to be included in a future deal. Time will tell…

Speaking of expanded rosters for September, don’t look for any “new faces” to come up for the last month. We’ll most likely only see Olivera and a handful of pen arms that have already cycled through. Maybe Danny Burawa. Maybe Todd Cunningham and/or Terdo will return when Gwinnett’s season wraps next week. In other words, don’t expect anyone who is not already on the 40-man roster. And there’s no way they’ll “start the clock” on a prospect like Mallex Smith or Tyrell Jenkins.

We know they’ll add Olivera and Banuelos. I’m gonna guess that they’ll also call up Burawa and RHRP Brandon Cunniff. They both fit the profile. I think they’ve seen enough of Jake Brigham.

I would expect to see Olivera and Bethancourt in almost every game down the stretch. It’s go time for Ollie and evaluation time for Betty. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some kind of loose platoon at 2B with Petey and Adonis down the stretch, too. Braves need to know what they have in Adonis. He might just provide something this roster sorely lacks – power. But can he do it consistently? That’s the question. I’ve cut up Betty enough over the season, and still don’t know if he’s got a future here or not. Truth is, though, I really am pulling for him. For one thing, we already have him. For another, why would I pull against him? It’d be OK with me for the Braves to bring up Daniel Garcia and give Andrelton a day or 2 off a week through the end of September. Let Andy heal up and give some evaluation time for a kid who impressed in his short time up here. Doubt that happens, though. FrediG will still want to put his best guys out there most days. I get that.

Don’t be surprised to see Adonis play some second base and left field. The Braves would like to see if his bat will be productive so he can either be flipped or plugged into the Braves bench corp next season.

I really like Jace Peterson but I don’t envision him as the Braves long term answer at second base.

As for Simba, he would want to play even if he had to wear training wheels. His job is safe, he has nothing to prove, just let him heal up, it only hurts him to play injured. The Braves are just playing for draft slots now,

Bethancourt reminds me a bit of Dale Murphy when he first came up. Okay, not as good a hitter but kind of wild arm. Yips? Maybe but we will find out.

Lots of ex Braves to root for this October, Mets, Astros, Royals and maybe even the Nats (Uggla) okay, maybe that one is a stretch but y’all get the idea, right?

SIGH !!! Lots of guys to be invited as alumni next year…

    Prophet star for me.

Braves call up RHRP Dan Burawa, RHRP Brandon Cunniff, and IF Daniel Castro. And of course IF Hector Olivera also called up, but we knew that was afoot. LHP Manny Banuelos activated off DL to make tonight’s start, although they’ll limit him to about 50-55 pitches.

Olivera makes his debut batting 6th and playing 3B; Castro is in the lineup at SS so that Andy can rest his ailing ankle.
