#151: A New Beginning

Long, long ago, in a city far away, there was a baseball franchise that achieved the pinnacle of success. This organization was one of the oldest in baseball with a reputation of being nomadic as well as somewhat mediocric. Oh, there were occasional spurts of success but nothing like what was to become know as an example of excellence which few believe will ever be equalled. Fourteen straight division titles. Of course there are those who will decry the fact only one world championship attained during that streak. However, that is still one more than the Cubs have won in the past one hundred and eight years.

Ted Turner

Ted Turner

This streak was built upon the money of Ted Turner, the idea of it all begins with pitching and the addition of a GM who was a savvy trader who knew how and when to pull the trigger for much needed pieces for each team. Knowing when to let some go and who to keep. That plus an environment which created an incentive for players to actually play for less money than what may have been available elsewhere.

John Schuerholz

John Schuerholz

Even the final season of the streak in 2005 was a Cinderella story nearly as amazing as the first in the worst to first story of 1991. The “baby Braves” with fourteen rookies on a roster to eek out an unbelievable finish resulting in Bobby Cox winning his final Manager of the Year award. But…. end it did. The sale of the Braves which was part of the Ted Turner, AOL, Time Warner merger resulted in Ted Turner losing controlling interest in the team. A corporate mind set permeated the organization and widespread defections began to take place. Stan Kasten, Dayton Moore, and many others signaled a change in the direction of the organization.

While these changes did not show up immediately, it did begin to affect the overall quality of what had become a solid and substantial farm system which had been the secret of the Braves success. Developing players who could continue to replenish a team in a sport which has a relatively short shelf with players, few whom last more than 10 years after they reach the majors. When corporations take over any entity, they try to change the mindset of the acquired property and look at the bottom line and that is to do more with less and cut corners when possible and then flip the property after taking out the most value they can.

So it was with squeezing out Ted Turner and selling the franchise to Liberty Media by Time Warner/AOL. It was more of the same only worse. It was almost as if the Braves were following the Expos/Nationals model on how to destroy a once great franchise by cutting the farm system budget to the bare minimum and trading away any good player for cash. Almost like Jeffrey Loria on steroids.

Oh, the Braves still had some occasional flashes of success but even those were short lived. The center of power for excellence had shifted north. The Phillies, the Nationals and the Mets have all enjoyed their moment in the sun, all using the old Braves model of building from within. Now the question becomes whether these teams can sustain that success. We have already seen the Phillies fade as quickly as they arose. Burdened with a win-it-now philosophy where they overpaid for many of their stars, it left the cupboard bare.

So, what to expect this season? Sadly for Braves fans, the expectations are closer to a season more closely resembling 2015 than 1991. Of course a lot of Braves fans were still hoping for a miracle finish before the Braves threw in the towel and traded away Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe to the Mets. The Braves went into a nosedive from which there was no hope of recovery. Losing 95 games, perhaps not that big of a surprise after fading in 2014 and losing 83, we had essentially the same team which had won the division in 2013 with 96 victories. One has to wonder, did the Braves get worse or did everyone else get better?

Chipper Jones #10

Chipper Jones #10

So many questions, so few real answers but the fix was in. Frank Wren was gone and it seemed anyone who knew him was fired too. Perhaps the lone survivor was Fredi Gonzalez but you do need a scapegoat while you blow up a team and completely rebuild from the ground up. What has been a real positive is the Braves have been acquiring some really good talent. The problem is this talent is still years away from having a significant impact on the fortunes of the team. Prospects are just that: prospects. Remember, Greg Maddux, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine were not overnight successes. Chipper Jones spent years in the minors before he arrived in 1995. The “Great Eight” became a nucleus for a franchise known for continues success. Keeping some, trading others but the beginning was much different from the end.

I still point to the trade of five prospects for first baseman Mark Teixeira with Texas was the real beginning of the end for the Braves. A trade which propelled the Rangers into the World Series and the Braves into mediocrity. The thing which had kept the Braves relevant was gone. That coupled with a diminished player development doomed the Braves to where they are.

But, a new beginning is now in progress. It will be a tough slog for the Braves with what could be one of the toughest schedules in the first two months of the 2016 season. The flip side is it should reveal the true character of these players. We should also see the arrival of some of the future stars of the game. Guys like Albies and Swanson and Malix Smith and some of the highly-touted young arms. I do not expect a magical season for the Braves this year but I do see a light at the end of the tunnel which looks a little less like an oncoming freight train and more like the actual portal into the light.

Thanks chief, kudos to the graphics department.

so, win-loss predictions? Until others mentioned it here, I didn’t know the braves had the hardest schedule for the first 2 months..so…as others have said, it’s obviously going to make things difficult…that and the 57 pitching prospects not being ready yet…I predict a 68-94 season, but looking a lot better come August as some arms are finally ready… just beat the Phils for 5th! 😉

Ber, I look for the Braves to have the type of season the Phillies had last year. Remember how beaten up they were until after the All-star break and then they started winning. That was directly tied to the caliber of the opponents they were facing.

I am under no delusion that the Braves would have won the NL East last season or even a wild card spot but when the traded Uribe and Johnson, the die was cast. The towel thrown in but we do know why, it’s all about the future.

I think we all hope it is the near term future, not a future like the Cubs and the Pirates have experience. They did not have a five year plan, they had a five decade plan. Not intentionally, it just worked out that way.

There is always the possibility the Braves could experience three straight 100 loss seasons ALA the Astros but it is all about razing the building and starting from scratch. I guess that is what made the Braves run from 1991 to 2005 so amazing. Unfortunately they did not have the funds available to get them deep into the play-offs. By then Time-Warner/AOL and Liberty Media had assume the financial reins .

The Yankees will always be relevant because the money to absorb bad decisions. The Dodgers are the the same but neither had made it to the big dance of late. I think the World Series has become very convoluted with so many travel days allowing for less talented teams to get by with fewer front line pitchers. That however, is a discussion for another day.

For the Braves to have a chance, they really need to cut down on the walks they issue. That keeps the home runs to solo shots as opposed to the 3 run dingers. That was the staple of so many Braves teams in the 90s… 3 run homers.

They are going with Plan A, which is to keep both Albies and Swanson at SS for the time being, playing at different levels. Albies is ahead time-wise even if not age-wise. I believe there is a chance that we could see each in ATL during the 2016 season, if only in September. I also believe there is a chance that Albies takes over as full time SS at mid-season.

    1- Inciarte, CF
    2- Aybar, SS
    3- Freddie, 1B
    4- Adonis, 3B
    5- Nicky, RF
    6- Hector, LF
    7- AJP, C
    8- Jace, 2B
    9- Julio, RHP

4:10pm start time. Only the 3rd time in 10 years the Bravos have opened at home.

a couple of things that would absolutely make my day today. I’d love to see Julio go deep into the game and baffle the Nats’ bats and I’d like to see Ender Inciarte be everything he is advertised to be.

In fact, if I could script the Braves first inning at the plate, I’d like for Ender to get on, Aybar to bunt him over, Freddie to be pitched around, and Adonis to launch one deep for the proverbial 3-run homer.

Just give Julio a few early runs to work with, and let him be the #1 pitcher he’s supposed to be.

Just thinking about the offensive improvements from last year to this. Here is last year’s OD batting order as opposed to this year’s:

    1- Eric Young, CF
    2- Peterson, 2B
    3- Markakis, RF
    4- Freeman, 1B
    5- Christian Bethancourt, C
    6- KJohnson, LF
    7- Alberto Fatasspo, 3B
    8- Andy Simmons, SS

    … and today’s:

    1- Inciarte, CF
    2- Aybar, SS
    3- Freddie, 1B
    4- Adonis, 3B
    5- Nicky, RF
    6- Hector, LF
    7- AJP, C
    8- Jace, 2B

I can understand that this is not a championship batting order. But if you can’t see improvement top to bottom, you need to have your eyes checked.

Eric Young vs. Inciarte? No comment necessary.
Jace vs. Aybar? Jace is appropriately placed in the 8 hole this time.
Markakis vs. Freddie? Markakis should be hitting behind Freddie.
Freddie vs. Adonis? Freddie is back at #3, where he belongs.
Bethancourt vs. Markakis? No comment necessary.
KJ vs. Hector? KJ is a bench player. Period.
Fatasspo vs. AJP? Fatasspo vs. anyone, Fatasspo loses.
Simba vs. Jace. Simba is the best defensive SS I’ve ever seen.

You only have only 3 players out of today’s 8 that were in last year’s lid lifter. Of the other 5, Young and Fatasspo are not on a ML roster, Bethancourt made a 25-man roster only because he was out of minor-league options and his rival was not, KJ is on a bench (our bench, actually), and Simba is known more for his glove than for his bat.

Yes, this 2016 version is a much improved Opening Day batting order.

So, for the first time this spring, the games count, I’m hoping I can get the Atlanta feed but I fear I will be stuck with Washington. Bob Carpenter has to be one of the worse announcers in all of baseball and that covers a lot of territory. I have heard most via MLB package.

Will turn sound off I guess…..

Currently watching the Brewers and Giants, Denard Span already 1-3 with a sac fly and two RBI. He was the guy who the Nats missed the most last season. Only played in 61 games last year. Nats were something like .750 winning average when he played.

Baseball is simple game. Throw the ball, catch the ball, hit the ball. Unfortunately, the Braves failed to master two of those three basic tenets. Beckham made an absolutely horrible throw on a sure ground ball out and AJ Perzinski failed to corral a great throw from Inders Incarte to allow the Nats to eke out a 4-3 win in 10 innings. The MLB headline pointed to the relief pitching as being substandard but it was sloppy play by the defense which was the real culprit.

The Braves will have a hard enough go of it as it is without stinking up the place will poor glove work. A bad beginning for what should have been a win for the good guys. The pen cannot be expected to strike out the side every inning. Pitching to contact will fail every time if the defense is not strong up the middle.

Make the other team beat you, don’t give them away….

    Oh well… we won’t go 162-0…

Defense was the culprit. I thought the bullpen did a pretty good job. Winkler and Vizzy were fantastic. With the exception of the leadoff walk, Grilli was not bad. But leadoff walks have a way of coming back to haunt you. Still, if AJP corrals the 2-hopper, we’re talking about a great opening game. And in reality, it was a pretty good game.

Kinda hard to assess how effective EOF was when he was put behind the 8-ball with Beckham’s wide throw. Beckham was channeling his inner Chuck Knoblauch on that one. (Obscure reference, but accurate. Just google his name…) Oddly, he has always been a great defender. No explanation. Bad timing.

Just go get after ’em today. Oh, wait… can’t do that. Gotta wait until tomorrow. I hate the early season scheduling. Off day today. Really? Then a game Wednesday, and another off day Thursday. Really? Hard to get in a groove that way.

Yesterday’s baseball game, the Braves lost it, the gNats did not win it…

Gotta play 9 innings. That’s the difference between a good team and a mediocre team. That said, for 8 innings, they played the league favorites toe to toe. There were alot of encouraging things to take away.

Teheran was as good as Scherzer for his 6 innings. Winkler and Vizzy looked great. Inciarte does appear to be as good as advertised. Francois came up big off the bench. Freddie. Adonis. All very positive.

Bad parts: Markakis struck out in a big moment that would have added a much needed insurance run. Beckham’s play off the bench.

As for “the play” at the plate. I’ll say this much about it. Inciarte was close enough in CF that his throw could have been better. Ideally you want a 1 hopper. His was a 2 hopper that wasn’t as clean as it could be. BUT… a veteran catcher has to make that play. Perhaps under the old rules, AJP could have covered the plate better and made it a little tougher for Werth to get his size 14 in there. As it was, he tried to catch it and swipe tag in one motion. Gotta catch it first, though.

Back to a good part. Adonis got a huge HR early, and made some nice plays in the field. I’ll take that from him all year long. I also heard (on radio) that Chipper likes him as a hitter. I’ll take that endorsement all year long too.

I know it’s early but to tell the truth, I rather have Markais hitting singles all year as opposed to trying to hit 20 home runs. Turner Field is no Camden Yards. HRs in Camden are warning track fly balls in Atlanta. Leave the thunder to the big boys.

I know, it’s only one game but it sticks in my craw because it’s one that the Braves should have put in their back pocket. Jace did strike out in one at bat but he put the bat on the ball hard once too. Just saying…. Beckham is going to have to atone for yesterday by playing solid defense. There are kids in the minors who are knocking on the door. Yes, it’s just one game but like Fredie have little patience when it come to pitchers issuing walks, I feel the same way when it comes to defense. If you are average with the leather, you better really be able to make up for it with your bat.

Which means both were so-so, both threw 100 + pitches…have to give both a pass being the first game and all, but didn’t help their bullpens…
I give new guys a bit of a pass, Beckham, it’s his first game with a new team, in a new league…wants to be a starter….not sure how many games he has played as a 3rd baseman…was always a 2nd baseman for the White Sox I believe…shows what I know…actually played 3rd first season in Chicago, moved to 2nd…probably because of errant throws 😕
But Gil, yep…if he doesn’t straighten up and fly right (Heh, you have to be old, or have older parents to get that reference) someone from the minors will be getting his AB’s and reps…

Ineartie…indicarte…our new CF’er doesn’t seem to have much of an arm…
guess that’s why he usually played a corner….

Inciarte actually has a better arm than he showed on that throw. That’s why I called him out on it. Throw should have been better. Catcher should have caught it still. Runner shouldn’t have been given a free pass to begin with. Plenty of blame to go around in the 9th. 10th also.

Plain and simple, the team has to finish. Yesterday they couldn’t finish. But… that’s the mark of a rebuilding team. Pieces still have to be put in place, gelling still has to be done.

Beckham really doesn’t have to prove anything. He’s only temporary. He’s holding Jace’s spot while Jace is holding Dansby’s spot. Time will correct all of this.

Funny thing talking about baseball with Miss Josie. She might not be to most savvy to the finer points of baseball but she knows what she sees and is usually spot on. Observation number one: Thought Bud Norris looked really good last night. #2 Was very impressed by Enders #3 Did not think Freedie should have been charge with the error for the ball A.J failed to catch. #4 Thought the Nationals looked more energized #5 Thinks a big part of the Braves problems is Fredie Gonzalaz.

Not agreeing on all points, just restating her opinion.

I explained to her that I think Fredie is just being set up to be the designated scapegoat, ala Russ Nixon….

Or maybe age has caught up with him

All I know is that he has twice failed to make a catch of a catchable throw, twice failed to make putouts at key moments, and has given up late leads in the process.

Not to mention that he struck out against a very hittable Papelbon with the tying run in scoring position.

I know it’s only 2 games, and I hesitate to scream that the sky is falling. But AJP is 39, and age has to catch up at some point. We’ll see Tyler Flowers tomorrow night against the lefty Jaime Garcia, so at least we won’t have to see it happen 3 games in a row.

Braves run themselves out of what could have been a big inning.

    AJP again…

Beckham continues to fail to impress.

Yep. Very underwhelming. If you ask me, it’s karma. He should have given Frenchy back his #7. Oh well… Frenchy can claim it when Beckham is released.

I’m on board with 4/5 of those observations. With all due respect, the sloppy play is their big problem. Baseball isn’t rocket surgery. You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball. Braves are not doing all 3 of those things for all 9 innings of a game. Hard to fault Fredi for the failure of player to do the fundamental things. Not at the major league level. At this point, they are paid to perform.

Now if he continues to play guys who continuously fail at the fundamental parts of the game, then it’s all on him.

I’ve been pondering the observation that the Nats look “more energized”. Then I look at the Nats players… Harper, Rendon, Espinosa, Murphy… all high energy players. Then look at the Braves. Freeman, AJP, Markakis… yawn. Can you find 3 more mummified players?

I’m thankful for Inciarte and Garcia. I’m waiting for Hector to loosen up. I’m looking forward to Albies and Swanson coming up. And just wait until Tyrell Jenkins hits the scene. Too bad he’ll only be on the field once every 5 days.

Maybe a better fit for the personality types currently occupying the gNats club house. We shall see, the right handed line up on tap tonight. Flowers and Beckham in the line up methinks.

I just watched the Schwarber/Fowler collision replay. I can speak to this from a personal standpoint. I had a very similar collision when I was a teenager. The difference is that I was playing SS going out for a short pop down the LF line, and the LF took out my left knee just as my foot planted.

That was my very first knee injury. it occurred on a Friday in late summer, literally the Friday before HS football 2-a-days were to begin the following Monday. So as the rest of the team began the march into fall, I began in the training room, getting taped before going out to “catch up”.

In 1980, high schools didn’t have the facilities or staff that they have now. We had a “team doctor”, but he only showed up to games and never came around practice. I had to make an appointment to see him, but couldn’t get in for several days. Due to the fact that back then coaches didn’t coddle anyone without a doctor’s order, I continued through most of the normal activities of early practices. (Keep in mind also, my parents were from small town rural South Georgia, and very little warranted a visit to a doctor… ever.) When I did finally see him, I was told that I likely had a partial ligament tear in my knee, but I had enough range of motion to satisfy the doc. So I was sent back to practice with no x-rays or other tests and told to “watch it”. I did lose a step in speed, though. Never recovered it either.

I’ll bet 6 ways to Sunday that he ends up diagnosed with a torn knee ligament after an MRI is done. But he’ll have top notch treatment and rehab. He’ll be fine. And it’s not like he’ll lose a step in speed. He doesn’t have any to start with. 😉

“team doctor” Mine only showed up for pre-season physical (turn your head and cough) Pretty similar to my draft registration physical…. but I digress.

If I had slowed down any more I would be backing up. Speed and my name were never mentioned in the same sentence. Hower, I had great lateral movement and quickness. Okay for a lineman…

My elbow was a different story, I never realized I had a ligament tear in my right elbow. Perhaps only being able to roll the ball back to the pitcher should have been a tip off but again, doctors were for sick people and “cough” physicals…

Come to think of it, I did not get to play in many games after that. Elbows are not that important in hitting so they kept me around. Still can’t throw worth a damn but again, did not affect my hitting. Of course now, I’m pretty happy just being able to stand up.

Looks like the Mets are whipping up on the Phillies. Going to be very quite in the city of brotherly love this summer. Will be able to hear every curse word very plainly….

Jim Bowden continues to insist that the Braves are shopping Julio. First, it makes no sense to shop a player in April. Second, Coppy has this to say about it directly: “We have no interest in trading Julio Teheran. He’s our ace and signed long-term so he can help us get back on top.” Seems pretty clear to me.

That is the dirty little secret to baseball. plays not made often lead to big innings when the pitcher should have been sitting in the dugout resting on their laurels….

Tight strike zone for Williams too, methinks.

I sure hope Newcomb and Ellis can win Cy Youngs while pitching for the Braves in the near and far future…. by that time we may have forgotten all about the Braves trading away one of the five greatest shortstops I have ever seen in my lifetime.

I agree, it is an awful fate to befall to the one guy whom seem to be on the path to greatness in the pen this season.

The Braves bullpen is like that Nova of mine, yesterday afternoon it was Jim Johnson and Jo Ramirez who really came apart. The Braves pen is a human tinder box, ready to go up in flames at any second.

    Observations from the weekend:

    Dan Winkler… tough break. Literally.
    Freddie Freeman… disappointing.
    Gordon Beckham… disappointinger.
    Erick Aybar… horrible.
    Bullpen as a collective… horribler.
    More Erick Aybar… more horribler.

I still like the trade for Newcomb and Ellis, but watching Aybar play defense is like watching Hillary Clinton in a bathing suit. Please… stop.

How can it be the only guy that has been somewhat entertaining to watch at the plate goes down in game #4 with an injury that can literally linger for the whole season if we are not lucky? And we have not been lucky. He’s also the only guy that has been consistently good on defense. And how can it be that the only bright spot in an otherwise underwhelming 5 game pitching performance is the guy who goes down for the year with a career threatening injury?

Speaking of which, the same thing happened on an Atlanta mound 2 years ago when Gavin Floyd suffered the same injury during a start for the Braves. His was not quite as dramatic – or apparently painful – as Winkler’s, though. Floyd was a candidate for Toronto’s last rotation spot this spring, and made the team in their bullpen. So the injury is not necessarily career ending. Still bad. Very bad.

I’m starting to think we might have gotten something for Freeman while we could, Just kidding, of course, but he has looked absolutely clueless at the plate. He’s swinging at some terrible pitches, and he’s uppercutting everything. For a cornerstone player, he sure doesn’t look very “elite”.

Now that Mallex Smith is coming up to take Inciarte’s roster spot for a couple of weeks, I’m beginning to look ahead and think about what the team might do if he actually adds some life to the corpse we have been watching for 5 games. When Inciarte’s 15 days are up, we need him back playing everyday. And Markakis is beginning to heat up. What of Olivera? Ber, you’ll appreciate this more than most. I’m beginning to wish we could undo that deal.

    Yep… I said it.

So… after a disappointing, but really not all that surprising 0-5 start, and a bullpen up in flames, as Gil says, changes are afoot. Over the weekend, John Gant and his funky delivery were sent down to AAA to go back to starting. Chris Withrow was promoted to resume his post-elbow/back surgeries career. Apparently his control is still rehabbing. But the dude has “stuff”, so hopefully he can get on track.

Also, After looking like crap thus far – including spring IMO – the out-of-options Jose Ramirez has been DFA’d. About time. Hey… I can’t blame the team for making some of the low-risk signings and trades they made, but I can blame them if they don’t recognize a stinker. The JRam deal was a stinker. And thankfully, the team isn’t hanging onto him.

To fill the 2 empty bullpen spots created by the JRam exit and Winkler injury, the team has promoted young lefty Hunter Cervenka, a kid with no ML experience but who has looked plenty good and almost made the team out of spring. He probably would have if Jose Ramirez had any options left. But that ship has sailed now. Thankfully the bullpen will now have a second lefty to pair with EOF’s shadow of his former self.

They have also brought up righty Joel De La Cruz, another kid making his first trip to The Show. That said, he shouldn’t get too comfortable. The team will have to make another move tomorrow to activate Chacin for his start tomorrow, and de la Cruz could make a quick u-turn and head right back without passing Go. But… you never know. I don’t think Coppy and Fredi are going to extend alot of patience with some of these guys who can’t throw strikes and can’t hold leads. And there is really no reason to. Bring in the next batch… losing is losing no matter who gives up the gophers.

If it were me, I’d send Williams Perez down tomorrow, keep De La Cruz in the pen a few more days, and promote Aaron Blair to make WillyP’s next scheduled start Friday in Miami.

But that’s just me. I am way over watching WillyP get himself into trouble, especially when he can’t get himself out.

And in case you couldn’t tell, I am a bit frustrated.

Look… I can have patience. I am a very patient guy. I am willing to extend a great deal of patience to the young guys.

But not to Jose Ramirez. Not to Williams Perez. And certainly not to Erick Aybar. He strikes me as a short timer just cashing in his last few paychecks. I have ZERO patience for that. AJP might be unraveling before our eyes, but at least he isn’t lollygagging.

Next on my target list is Jim Johnson and Alexi Ogando. It’s one thing to lose young, it’s another to lose old. I’d just as soon keep De La Cruz and give Ryan Weber or Casey Kelly a shot as to watch guys past their prime trying to hang on.

One last thing on Aybar, and then I’m done with it lest I have to go find some blood pressure meds.

Bowman has reported that the braintrust is discussing moving Aybar and his suddenly suspect glove to 2B to minimize the damage, optioning Jace to AAA and promoting Daniel Castro to provide the pitchers with a little bit of comfort on the left side of the IF.

How about this… promote Castro and move Aybar over, but keep Jace on the bench and let Beckham follow Jose Ramirez out the door.

And when Aybar muffs enough balls hit on that side of the IF, you can kick him to the curb and bring up Ozzie to play SS with Castro at 2B. One step closer to the future.

OK.. back to work now. I feel better.

VOX, I’m with you, you do need a Jonny Gomes type in your locker room to help keep the kids in line but you are right, if you are going to lose, lose young, let em take their lumps which is going to happen no matter when they show up, may as well be sooner than later.

I think a lot of people not named Coppolella realize how much Simba really meant to the pitchers of the ball club for all the plays he made at short. Plays he did not make were base hits anyway for anyone else.

I think what bothers me the most is you get the sense that Aybar is simply going thru the motions. Waiting to be release so he can go somewhere else. I know I have told you folks my Luis Tiant story about when he was with the Braves and assigned to Richmond….

I think Freddie is still feeling poorly from a bout of food poisoning he experience during spring training. Miss Josie said he looked pale to her. He is not yet back to full strength at this point. A lot like Markakis last season. The ball club does not share a lot of that info with the public.

I can see why Stubbs was available, that and Turner Field is a tough place to play the outfield to begin with. I still think it was pretty stupid to not back light the outfield when they built the place. Don’t feed me the line that they did not want to obstruct the view of the Atlanta skyline and then put up a giant Coke Cola bottle and a chopping cow….

Say what you want, it is still about extending control for an extra year…. The Braves just did not have a choice with Smith….

Glad to have him though, it is not like they don’t have a place for Enders to play, Markakis will bring a kings ransom. Sadly, Aybar has been exposed. Unless he starts to actually make plays, we will be lucky to get a bag of practice balls and some fungo bats for him.

Okay, here is what I saw with John Gant. While his “Vulcan” change is a great strikeout pitch but it is very telling in that batters can see the grip and know what was coming. Kind of the ultimate tipping of a pitch. Major league hitter pick up on that stuff pretty fast, well, other than Braves hitters but you get the general idea.

Okay folks, again forced to listen to Bob Carpenter and FP Santangelo fawn over the gNats for the next four days. Of course the way things have been going, I don’t have to listen past much more than the 7th inning. Now I know why the Dodger fans use to come late and leave early.

I have to say, I now know what all the whining was about when opposing teams played the Braves and Maddux and Glavin would get calls on balls clearly out of the strike zone and their pitchers would get squeezed. Some of the calls were ridiculous. Hard enough game as it is.

Mallex Smith did himself proud. Would like to have seen a replay of that slide but Washington does not show replays on suspect calls.

His hand was on the bag, from my view point. But they were so caught up in the gash on his brow that they didn’t even consider that he might have been safe… which he looked to me.

Somehow I don’t think that stolen base would have had a great effect on the outcome of the game.

I was at trivia, and missed the play (As well all know, baseball is generally not king in the south, and even if a game is one, it won’t be the right one (Mets were beaten up by the Marlins 8-0 by the 3rd) no one even thought to mention to put the home team on (yes, including me 😦 )
so, came home to watch baseball tonight and….they never even showed that it was his debut, or the injury. Just like when Winkler got hurt , didn’t even bother to mention it. 😡
I really have learned to HATE espn. Uber politically correct, they charge by far the most of any cable channel to be on everyone’s package…but, I really like most of the baseball tonight crew….Except for Karl Ravech…I’d watch more of MLB.TV but the in game highlights get old…watch the 1 hour wrap-ups some, basically when baseball tonight becomes baseball every other night .2 nights in a row, there was no baseball tonight, and during the first week of the season. How the mighty have fallen. I am pretty sure even now, there is a football tonight, or whatever they call it, at least once a week….

I did see a clip of him via DOB after the game talking about it. Seems like a good kid (and it’s funny to see a 22 y.o. try hard to sound grown up, mature 😉 ) I hope even though he didn’t get 1 10th the hype other rookies have gotten, he has a huge year….
Of course, I don’t know where he’d play, what with the super young cuban in LF getting off to such a hot start…. 😛

One thing we all have to remember, is…it’s early. If someone else besides Nick M. could get hot…it would sure help.
It’s going to be a rough year for F.F. if someone doesn’t hit behind him.
I talked some baseball with some pals in the bar area after trivia (that’s where the game WAS on, and found about about Mallex Smiths’ crazy injury. I said, after hearing the tale of the helmut coming off, hitting the bag, then the rim cutting Smith above the eye, that sounded like a story some kid would make up to Mom explaining needing stitches ! 😉 ) V, is that how it looked to you? Like I said, never saw the play…
anyways…as we were all griping about the braves (Just win 1 game, said a fellow beleaguered fan) the female bartender mentioned Adonis swinging and missing 4 straight outside pitches the other day…that’s gonna be a problem, if he can’t figure out how to lay off that pitch….
So, F.F. wants to be the hero, but every pitcher is going to give him junk, so they can face the guy behind him…a tough position to be in…Nick M better be batting 4th tonight!

Yep. That pretty much sums it up. Freak injury. Never seen anything like it before. The helmet hit the bag at just the right angle to reflect it back into his face. And fraction of an inch off any any direction would have taken it elsewhere. Just bad… luck?

Personally, I do not believe in “luck” per se, but man, oh man has this team had alot of bad events befall them since the season started. Just weird…

Ber, I have seen the majority of AB’s by Freddie, Adonis and Nick. Nick isn’t gett alot of fat pitches, but he’s working counts and not missing mistakes.

Adonis isn’t flailing away at junk. He’s actually had some good AB’s. He’s also had some not so great ones. But he’s really the one not getting anything to hit because no one is behind him anymore to protect him. He did better work when Markakis was still in the 5 slot.

Freddie… I do not agree that he isn’t getting anything to hit. And I’ve been watching. He’s not been patient at the plate at all. He’s swinging at bad pitches and getting behind in the count. Then he’s toast. And it’s not even the pitches that bother me. It’s his swing. Everything is an uppercut. He’s had so many fly ball outs because he isn’t driving anything. And IMO, he’s completely freaked out over opposing manager’s employing the dreaded shift on him. It’s in his head.

This batting order is much better with a true leadoff (Inciarte or Mallex), a good #2, followed by Freddie, Adonis, Markakis. Having to move Nick back to #2 throws the balance off and makes 5-9 a black hole. 5 easy outs in a row. In other words, we’re giving away at least 3 offensive innings per game. That is an unsustainable proposition for a team that is already not very good.

IMO, the biggest blow to the team has been the ineffectiveness of Erick Aybar both at the plate and in the field. We need his productivity to balance the lineup. Shockingly disappointing.

Ber, back in 1971, the Braves picked up Tiant (not sure how) and gave him a shot and assigned him to Triple A Richmond. To say the least, he stunk up the joint. I think his ERA was in the 13s and to be truthful, did not look that good. I don’t think he had ever played in the NL but in the 70s, the Braves were really bad. Kind of like today but worse because they were consistently bad and did not appear to make any attempts to get any better.

Anyway, he had a real attitude so the Braves cut him loose. Next thing you know, he was pitching in Boston and was pitching like Cy Young. It was pretty evident even back then he was sandbagging, trying to get released from his contract with the Braves. When I think about it, I think the term lollygagger has his pitcher in the dictionary as an example. I never liked him after that I as a rule, I have always been pretty supportive of former Braves players who made their way thru Richmond, VA.

As for ESPU… Never watch it. For the most part, I get my baseball background from the MLB network. Even with them, you will get only the highlights which might be relevant to the fantasy league players and gamblers. I don’t know if you have a DVR with your Direct TV package but that is the route I take for making sure I don’t miss games.

I do not get Sports South or any of the other Atlanta based sports channels. I do get MASN as that is the network which carries the Orioles and the Nationals. The Os have much better announcers than the gNats… A lot less annoying and less homerless than Bob Carpenter of the gNats.

Markakis is playing like a guy who cares, Olivera plays left field like Evan Gattis but with a whole lot less power. He is afraid to try for balls hit in front of him. A lot fall in front of him by the way. He is only playing because the Braves front office is trying to justify the trade they made for him. There are 29 other major league teams and I don’t think he would be on the roster of any of the other 29. He will run into one every so often but he has a big hole in his swing. Just too long which you can get away with in the minors but not in the majors.

    Here’s my observations on Hector:

First and foremost, he is NOT lollygagging. He truly appears to be going about his business with a purpose and with a desire.

    But…

That’s about where the positives end.

As for his fielding, I’ll give him a little bit of a pass because he’s learning a new position. The guy is athletic and should be able to figure it out. He just needs the reps. The difference between him and Oso is that Hector doesn’t lumber around and can actually cover some ground once he gets a read on the ball. But he has to get used to reading the ball off the bat from 300 feet. It’s a little different than from 2B.

But his batting is where I get most frustrated. He worked with Seitzer over the winter and had reportedly made several adjustments. The observation in spring was that he was making great progress in sessions, but falling back into bad habits during games. Now that the season has started his swing looks just like last year’s.

Look… I’m no major league hitting coach. I didn’t even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. But even I can observe that when you can read the numbers on the back of a guy’s jersey from the CF camera angle, his stance is waaaaaay too closed. And even I can recognize that if the head of his bat is pointing at the pitcher, it’s gonna take alot longer to bring that sucker around square with the pitch. And even I could tie him up inside with a fastball because of those 2 major problems with his stance and swing. (OK, maybe I couldn’t actually do that myself. I lost too many mph with my rotator cuff surgery. But I still think it would be close.)

That said, I think the guy still has potential if he could ever get straightened out. But so far, it ain’t happening. It has to be super frustrating for Seitzer.

Is it too early to try to figure out what will happen in 2 weeks when Inciarte is eligible be activated?

I don’t want to send the future back to AAA. I want him in the lineup. And as much as it would seem to be a good idea to trade Markakis while he’s hot, I’m not so sure I want to lose him. He’s a darned consistent veteran hitter. I kinda want at least one of those on the roster. And I think we’re tied to Hector for good or bad.

Is it a bad thing that Inciarte and Mallex are kinda 2 sides to the same coin? Do you need 2 of those slap-hitting leadoff type guys?

I’m glad I don’t have to answer that for real, because I don’t think I can.

In the perfect world, I’d trade Hector. But who’s gonna take him?

In my humble opinion, I think you have to look a the team’s biggest need – both now and long-term – and assess what you need to bring back. Catcher? Starter? Reliever?

You see, to me, you have pitching on the way. You just have to be patient. But where’s the catcher? If it’s me, I see how I can best fill that need and work from that pivot.

VOX, unlearning a bad habit is one of the toughest things an athlete ever has to do. You can practice and practice and practice but when it comes down to crunch time, that old muscle memory takes over and they revert to what has felt comfortable for however many years.

They say a pro golfer has to hit 1000 balls a day to get to the point where they can become a top player. If a guy is a once a week golfer who shoots around 100, he is actually a pretty good golfer.

I don’t think a ball player can hit 1000 baseballs in a week. Not without hurting something… I’m not so sure the Dodgers don’t wish they had Oliveras back, if only they could trade him for someone other than Alex Woods. Alex has not exactly wowed them in LA. Just saying…

Oh well, no pressure. no one is watching the Braves right now so they can do just about whatever they want. The Braves drew about 28,000 per game last week. They have yet to win a game. The gNats drew 18,000 last night and they are in first place. Not to mention the weather was absolutely perfect. Tell me again why Atlanta is such a bad sports town?

Sure, the Red Sox sell out those 29,000 seats each game, a lot tougher to sell 56,000 seats to anything other than a once a week football game. Yankee Stadium does not sell out every game either.

A couple of Braves alumni will be playing tonight in Houston, Kris Medline will be on the mound for the Royals and Evan Gattis was activated by the Astros last night after the game. I expect he will DH. He had a sports hernia operation during the off season. I hoe they both do well tonight.

By the way, Evan might be tough to recognize, he has shaved off his beard. Kris on the other had still looks 15 years old.

Early days….. No one has been eliminated from play-off contention as yet, written off yes, actually eliminated, no…

I guess it would be unfair to characterize anyone on the team as a lollygagger… At least this early, just lots of ball falling in that use to not. And yes, I think Freddie Freeman is pressing. He is still pretty young and he no longer has any close friends in the dugout to help get all those negative vibes out of his head. Like Yogi so famously said, “Baseball is 90% mental, the other half is physical”.

Two ways to beat the shift, hit it out or hit it away. Tough trying to do both at the same time. I thing that is why Freddie is uppercutting the ball. Trying to get everything over their heads. When you have a team which is not blessed with power, it is tough to avoid being pitched around.

I mean, he clearly is a disrupter on the bases…Team is still shut out as of the 8th, but if he gets on base even at a .300 OBP clip, don’t they have to play him? When the Braves didn’t score with the bases loaded, I knew they were done.

Baseball is a game of inches, those inches taken away from Braves pitchers were added to the Washington strike zone. Don’t these guys know these games are being recorded?

Frency came within an inch of catching that ball Harper hit against the grain for a double. Still, Eazy O is not the Easy O we once knew and loved…. Who broke him?

The Braves fought until the end.

The Nats have not yet really played anybody besides the Braves, I don’t think they are as good as they think they are. The Braves might just be that bad…. 😦 They will not go 0-162 however… April can be a cruel month however.

Medlen won his game last night, rough first inning but looked good after that.

Braves are not really any different than they have been for the past 4 years. Just less power through the line up but I am excited to see some more kids come up.

Pitching is still rough but there is hope on the horizon. Everything is magnified at the beginning of the season. Just as long as they don’t throw away games with sloppy play. Of course I’m not sure how Jim Johnson figures into that but that is an argument for another day.

When the Braves didn’t score with the bases loaded, I knew they were done.

Key moment in that infamous 8th inning: Freddie Freeman striking out with runners on 1B and 2B and nobody out. He watches a fat first pitch, fouls off another fat pitch, then flails away at a completely unhittable pitch a full foot outside for the K. Horrible AB. Who broke Freddie Freeman? 2 hits in 29 PA’s. Gordon Beckham has more hits. Drew Stubbs has more hits.

Speaking of Beckham, he had a pretty decent game yesterday. Jace Peterson looked completely clueless in his PH appearance. Still, Jace has more hits than Freddie. Ouch.

And exactly why did Fredi Gonzalez bat Jace Peterson in the 7th inning with Beckham on 2B? Why not Kelly Johnson? If you’re gonna take out the pitcher that has been dominating the game, and who had only tossed 69 pitches (52 for strikes), then don’t you want to maximize the opportunity? Jace Peterson? Really? And don’t you know the Nats dugout let out a collective sigh when they saw Jhoulys Chacin leave the on-deck circle and head back down the steps. I think I detected a slight smile on Dusty Baker’s face. (Maybe I imagined that. Maybe he was just shifting that confounded toothpick from one side to the other… again. But I bet he was smiling on the inside.)

Plenty of blame to spread around for that game, but Freddie is supposed to be our one remaining “elite” player. 2 hits in 7 games. 7 K’s. Bad ratio. Does any pitcher really fear him? I doubt it.

All that said, the team played some pretty darn good defense in the game. And while Erick Errbar has showed microscopic range thus far, he made a really slick decoy play on Daniel Murphy to setup the double play on Jayson Werth’s flyout. That was a highlight for me. Murphy looked clueless.

I also loved the play where Bryce Harper’s ball kicked off Freddie’s glove with Beckham ranging wide behind him to pickup the carom, who made a great leading throw to Chacin who was doing his job and covering 1B. That was a ML play.

As for Chacin… masterful. A very efficient 69 pitches in 6 innings. 52 strikes against just 17 balls. That’s a better than 3:1 ratio. I hope the youngsters were paying attention. Heck, I hope the oldsters were paying attention.

Can’t disagree with your assessment on Freddie Freeman. he hit the heck out of the ball twice last night but nothing was leaving the park last night except via the exits.

Mark Bradly has officially signaled the death watch for Fredi Gonzalez. Hey, got to blame somebody, the front office is not going to take the hit if they can avoid it. Only person who would be willing to take the job would be Brian Snitker who is currently in triple A. I still think they will let Fredi twist in the wind until after the All-star break.

    #1 Dansby Swanson: .400/483/600 (5 2B)
    #3 Ozzie Albies: .346/393/385
    #7 Austin Riley: .318/348/636, (1 HR, 4 2B)

That is the IF of the future. Riley’s still a couple years away, but Ozzie and Dansby are close. Ozzie especially. I can feel it.

Only person who would be willing to take the job would be Brian Snitker

Betcha Terry Pendleton or Eddie Perez would take it. And I’d take either one. I’ll go ahead and take Pendleton as my manager and Eddie as my bench coach. I can find a bullpen coach anywhere.

But this team needs what TP has to offer, which is a winning experience and a passion to play the game the right way. And he brings instant respect. I think he’s in line for it anyway.

You know, for the most part, I’ve been OK with FrediG. But there were some things last night that are just not defensible… like EOF vs. Harper with the game on the line. Never should have happened. He’s not “in the game”. Not sure if he’s too focused on “development” or what, but he sure missed a good game last night. Well, a good game for 7 innings.

    On a cheerier note…

From a piece by ESPN’s Tim Keown: Now that [Adam] LaRoche has stepped away from his big-league career after a disagreement with his front office about the presence of his son in his team’s clubhouse, he’s planning a lengthy RV trip with his family to the Pacific Northwest. LaRoche also stars in a reality show (Buck Commander) and owns a meat company. And improbably, in November, he joined with Brewers pitcher Blaine Boyer and a nonprofit to try to travel to Southeast Asia to go undercover to try to save underage sex slaves. “Something huge happened there for us,” says Boyer. “You can’t explain it. Can’t put your finger on it. If you make a wrong move, you’re getting tossed off a building.”

Perspective has a way of changing priorites…

I can also live with Mallex in LF along with Inciarte in CF. Can you see Inciarte, Mallex, Freddie (hopefully the old Freddie), Adonis and Markakis 1-5? That has promise.

Of course, if it were me, it’s be Inciarte, Mallex, Markakis, Freddie at 4 and Adonis at 5. Yep. You know what the problem with that is, though? 1-4 are all LH. Yowser.

Here’s something seemingly out of left field… well actually out of center field. Or the mound. You pick. This is from the AA Tulsa Drillers web site:

Jordan Schafer, who was the Minnesota Twins’ center fielder in last year’s opening day, will be making his debut as a pitcher.

A career .228 hitter from 2009–15 with the Atlanta Braves, Houston Astros and Minnesota Twins, what Schafer told JP Hoornstra of the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin may explain why the reinvention is taking place. “Hitting has always been something that’s given me great anxiety,” Schaffer said. “It really has stressed me out a lot. I never enjoyed hitting in high school.”

Afternoon folks, first on Hector…. Irregardless, the precedence has already been set regarding domestic abuse. It will not be for the whole season but really puts his career path on a downward spiral. I expect he will spend extended time in Triple A so he can get back into playing shape.

More Hector, conversing with another old timer today at the bowling today about Olivera having to re-learn/unlearn a new swing. It is really tough to change a guy who is 30 years old to completely forget something he has been doing for likely 22 years of his life. You can change a player’s stance or where he holds his hands but just a soon as the pitcher goes into his wind up, all that is out the window. Why, because it’s comfortable. If he is thinking about anything but the pitch, he is doomed anyway. This is especially true when the ball is thrown at 95+ mph.

I know Enders won’t be back for two weeks but pairing him in the outfield with Smith could sure cut down on base hots to the outfield by opposing teams. I was particularly impressed by the fact Mallax knew which base to throw to last night to get Michael Taylor in a run down.

On the manager’s spot, sure, there are guys who would take the job. Going to be rough on them but you have to pay for your learning as my mom use to say.

Tanner Roark, in my opinion, is a better pitcher than Strausburg. Good luck to the next sacrificial lamb being led to slaughter tonight.

Lastly, I thought Fredi made a good decision to bring in Grille early. Not as much pressure, allows him to gain confidence. Easy O? He is better at getting out right handers than lefties to start with. I think someone is reading the “book” a little too much. Thinking outside the box? That’s where Fredi is going to end up if he keeps making bone headed moves. I know it was a close game but I think I would have left Chacin in for another inning or two.

This season is NOT his fault.

Agree, but a manager still has to manage. I will always be haunted by the vision of Kimbrel staring from the bullpen as the Braves’ less than best reliever was beaten and the team was knocked out of the playoffs. No excuse for that. Forever unforgivable.

I disagree wholeheartedly with PH’ing for Chacin when he was throwing so well and only had 69 pitches. Chacin… 69 pitches, 52 for strikes. They couldn’t touch him. Fredi has been begging for some starter to take him deeper into a game. He had one. He took him out.

Fredi says he “had to” since Beckham was in scoring position. Fine. Then bring in a professional PH’er, not Jace frickin’ Peterson. Crikey!

Leaving EOF in to face Harper. Boneheaded at best.

No, this team is not Fredi’s fault, but his own poor decision making is. And with a team that is already challenged from a talent standpoint, a poor manager makes for a lethal combination. Having bad talent doesn’t give Fredi a pass to be a bad manager.

Simply put, Fredi is not giving an already challenged team their best chance to win. Period.

V, I guess I just see F.G is in a darned if you do, darned if you don’t position. on a normal, real baseball team…how can anyone defend having the best hitter in the NL, faced by a …right handed pitcher? if Harper got a hit off of said right hander (No, I can’t think of his name, or would I be able to spell it, on the other computer I have) what would everyone say about F.G. then? You moron, no one has a right hander face Harper late in the game, unless it’s an elite closer…and the braves don’t have one of them…at this time of the year at least.
It also proves the lefties (now 2, was 1 for several games) aren’t very good…though that was a bloop hit…
Also, a real, actual team…wouldn’t have gone scoreless and force the manager to take out the successful starter. Remember it was his first start of the year, here at least. Not many pitches, but …how many times would you see ANY manager leave in a starter at that point, in a 0-0 game? I can agree with having KJ pinch hit there, but again…fairly early in the game…
Thing is…this team is not even close to being good…it’s worse than anyone was thinking.
Who on this team would the Nats swap for one of their regulars. Anyone?
Who has a better bullpen? Who has better starters as of of today?

Fortunately, I will only have to endure one more Nat’s broadcast for a while. When you are down, umpires don’t mind piling it on do they? The game is hard enough when actual strikes are called strikes. I’m thinking Fredi needs to get this team going, time to get thrown out of a game.

I don’t get that sense here, only a bunch of folks espousing/venting on what is a very frustrating turn of events for Braves Country. The only positive thing is I have seen some really nice pitching performances from some of our young guys. Tis the bullpen what really needs to be shored up. There is still offense but that is always the last component isn’t it?

Lots of ways to build a ball club. The Nats were really bad for a bunch of years. They hired a bunch of former Braves people to draft and develop a team. They have spent some serious cash too. They won’t be so far ahead when they have to start playing someone besides the Braves.

Early days folks, early days… It is ugly having to watch them make the sausage, especially when it includes killing and butchering the hogs.

Yes, Gil. There are good days on the horizon. Good pitching performances now, even if inconsistent. But that’s the way it is with young pitchers. And that part of it will get better as Folty, Blair, Newcomb, Jenkins, et al. arrive on the scene. And with Dansby and Ozzie well on track, there are indeed good days to come.

The only hole I see currently is the power shortage. Coppy indicates that they’ll attempt to address it in this year’s draft. He says they want a college hitter. Well, there are a handful of college OF with power that will be available at pick #3. In fact, they should have their choice of hitters simply because there are a couple of HS pitchers that are #1 & #2 on almost everybody’s “big board”.

If we could nab one of those hitters, and pick up a catcher via trade, I think we are in a great position to be the next Astros/Cubs in a couple of years. In the meantime, we’ll have to go through 2016, and probably 2017 too.

Patience is in short supply these days. Even in my house. But we must be willing, even as we endure what we are seeing right now.

Do you think Smoltzie, Glavine, Maddux…would do that to Harper?
I know, it’s hard to compare HOF’ers to other guys…but, as a #1, at least this team’s #1…he just seems to have issues…besides an average fastball, with little movement…He either needs to get pinpoint control like Glavine , and Maddux had (or close to it) or find a way to make that average fastball…move….
I think it’s part of the reason they would consider trading him, but at some point, you have some stability on a team’s roster…

    David O’Brien added,
    Bill Barrow @BillBarrowAP
@DOBrienAJC Schuerholz said payroll would be 100-120M this year. It’s not, even with write offs. Roster could’ve used the bridge spending.

So, I guess like most politicians, they lied to us…

Do you think Smoltzie, Glavine, Maddux…would do that to Harper?

Go back and look at Smoltz’s first couple of years in the majors. His nickname was “Dinger”. He gave up HR’s at an alarming rate. Most were calling for him to not only be taken out of the rotation, but to also be sent down. Bobby was crucified in the sports pages for sticking with him. But Bobby’s patience was rewarded.

I’m certainly not saying Julio will turn out to be another John Smoltz. But we might as well be somewhat patient. Seems to be the theme of 2016.

So, I guess like most politicians, they lied to us…

Lying? Kinda harsh. Maybe they did, maybe not. You can offer $$ to FA’s, but they don’t have to take it. As I recall reading, they made a hard run at signing JUp to come back to ATL. He wasn’t interested and went to Detroit instead. There certainly could have been others that we didn’t hear about. They don’t typically publicize their misses. (Coppy was pretty upset that someone outside the Braves organization spilled the beans on JUp.)

Something else to consider, they still have $$ available to take on salary in a trade if necessary. If they find someone that they can fill a long term need – ahem, catcher – with a trade, then they can do so without being concerned with busting the budget. That is something they’ve mentioned. If someone like Jonathan Lucroy becomes available, then they have the prospects and the financial flexibility to pull it off.

I know it already feels like a long grind, but we’re just in the second week of the season. There is much yet to be done.

And not to split hairs, but I have their committed 2016 payroll at $93,190,292 which includes roughly $7,125,000 to players in the minors on the 40-man roster.

    Not that I’m counting.

(If anyone’s interested, they only have $44,676,042 committed for 2017 so far with 9 pending free agents and one other player with a club option.)

Something else that many people don’t count into the “payroll”, but is still committed money is the international and draft bonus spending pool allotment. (The Braves famously traded for additional pool money in some of their trades last season, including the much ballyhooed Hector Olivera deal.)

Those charges for 2016 are $4,766,000 for international FA spending and $12,385,200 for the June amateur draft.

It’s still money to be spent and accounted for.

V, good points all..I guess, I just don’t…buy some of what they tell us. Like wanting to have all that money off the books, so they traded C.J. for 2 guys who’s contract would be off the books in 2017…one question I ask , crazy question…umm, why? Well, so you could have room to spend. Well, as you just pointed out, 44 Million on the books in 2017. What different does it make at this point, whether the money is spent in 2016 or 2017? If anything, taking more money on this year, only made matters worse.
(Probably shouldn’t try to make many points on 3 1/2 hours sleep, but gonna still do it anyway :/ )
A really lousy 2016, 90 to 100 losses, helps draftwise, but…getting off to such a bad start means fewer and fewer fans going to games no matter how many bobble heads are offered…few fans, = less money for the braves (really berigan? you are sooo very smart!) fans will start showing up in paper sack headgear. braves become a light night comedian punchline (at least it used to) and….we all know how much trouble the braves team had getting even decent starters to come to the ATL,for the 2009 season with an average team, and Bobby Cox as the manager…who is going to come in 2017, with a new unproven manager? I know, money talks….but, a lot of teams have money. A lot of teams have more money than the braves. A lot of teams will have better records than the braves will have.
Of course, that’s why you need to develop talent…(thanks for that amazing insight ber!) and they are doing the best they can to develop….pitchers.
But, look at other teams that are on the upswing. We have all believed you have to get a great rotation from within FIRST. But, look at the Cubs, Astros…they used their picks to get elite hitters….overloaded with them…and develop a few decent pitchers, and sign a few #1, #2’s
As we saw, the cubs did NOT want any of our young arms(or at least who we were offering). They held on to their hitters, even before the injury to Kyle Schwarber. They traded pitchers away to get …hitters…Addison Russell , and for Anthony Rizzo (Can’t believe his is still only 26!)
Doesn’t make sense, and yet…it’s worked.
Heck, did anyone see the Phils starter last night? Not sure of his name…let’s see, Vincent Velasquez. Astros gave him up for the Phils young closer. Man, 15 innings, 25 strikeouts. 24 Y.O. Looks like an absolute stud. To think the Astro traded him away, Folty, and released Delino DeShields, and J.D. Martinez, and still have so much talent they don’t have a place for Gattis….

Payroll is what it is, the Braves have too many holes in their line up to invest too much money. Guys like Justin Upton want to go to a team that has a chance to play in a World Series.

You are right Ber, Vincent Velasquez is a stud. Even Ryan Howard looks like his former self. The Phillies might just be a better team than the Braves this season.

Excerpt from a MLB.com interview with Coppy:

MLB.com: It has been your goal from the very beginning to build the Braves back into a team that can have sustainable long-term success. What does that mean for 2016?

Coppolella: From a talent pool and financial resources standpoint, 2016 is tougher for us than the upcoming years will be. But that challenge presents opportunity, and many of the young players we have acquired over the past 18 months could surface in Atlanta this season. Inciarte’s injury presented an opportunity for Mallex Smith getting called up, and it’s possible we could see at least a half-dozen more young pitchers and hitters.

I hope Mallex sticks around all year. I’m ready to see Aaron Blair sooner than later. Folty too. Ozzie a little later. Dansby a little later. But I’ll take ’em all this year.

I’d like to see a couple guys just get healthy, like Inciarte and ManBan. Having ManBan go down before the curtain even dropped was huge.

  240. 243 berigan2electricboogaloo April 15, 2016 at 3:26 pm

Oh yeah, he does bring energy, no doubt! And a 1-2 of he and Ender Inciarte(Had to look up the spelling still) could be potent. But, H.O. between beating up a woman, and not hitting…has really messed up an already shaky offense. If they can’t get out of his contract (can you imagine doing something like this, and keeping your much, much lower paying job?) and he can’t hit…that creates such a domino effect.

I was thinking (it happens) I think one of my big issues right now is being jealous of so many teams that have so many exciting young players.
I’m sure everyone has read how this was the best group of players to come up in 20 + years. Houston has George Spring, and Carlos Correa, who they are already making his HOF bust…and he really does seem to be that good. Cleveland has a SS who’s almost as good. The Rockies SS, Trevor Story , broke all sorts of records and has 7 HR’s and 13 RBI’s! Troy who? (Braves have 3 HR’s but do have a whole 23 RBI’s, so in your face Trevor!) I could go on and on, Dodgers have Cory Seager, Joc Pederson, and Yasiel Puig(the old man at 25, has an OBP of .500 right now) young, exciting guys…
a golden age of young players. And who do the braves have? Other teams prospects, still some ways away from the big show.
Frank Wren was a really bad hire. Look at what the Dodgers, Red Sox, and Cards are able to find, despite more often than not, being in the playoff hunt?
The Braves should sue him for ruining the farm system.
It’s going to take so long to build it back up…it’s swell that the experts think the braves have the #1 farm system now, but…I think that’s as much because teams like the Cubs, Red Sox, etc just had their massive waves of talent reach the bigs…I know, lots of arms there…but the system is unbalanced…(have I ever made this point before? ) 🙄 I just don’t see what they can do except bring up some kids, and if they succeed, trade them for offense, IF other teams are willing to let their young, controllable hitters go.
Hopefully, by 2018, 2019, there will be 5 great starters in the rotation, the college slugger we get this summer (3rd baseman? Catcher? too much to ask?) will join with Mallex, Swanson, Albie, and FF to form a nice, solid offense…..

As hard as it may seem to see, there are some good position players on the horizon. We’ve talked ad nauseum about Ozzie and Dansby, who will be your SS/2B for years to come. But not much talk thus far about Austin Riley, who is a big time 3B prospect with big time RH power. He’s still a few years away, currently in low-A Rome. But we can’t forget 3B Rio Ruiz, who came over with Folty from HOU.

His current numbers in 7 games at AAA Gwinnett: .346/.433/.538, with 1 HR and 2 2B’s. He may not have the ceiling that Austin Riley has, but he’ll be a good addition to this club. He’s progressed steadily up the ranks and has well over 400 games of minor league experience. He’s very close.

With Freeman cemented at 1B (and looking cemented at the plate 😉 ), the infield of the future is in house.

As for the OF, well, we see the young Mallex Smith and young Ender Inciarte, What they need is a big time power hitting OF prospect… like they could should pick up in this year’s draft. Coppy says he wants a college hitter that can help sooner than later. The good news is that there are a few of those in this draft, and Coppy should have his pick of the litter.

The real void is behind the plate, where there is no short term help in sight. That’s where the front office has to do it’s job and find a good trade partner. The price for a young stud catcher will be steep, and that’s where some of these stockpiled arms will come in… well, handy. (Bad pun.) It’s gonna require that we give up a Jenkins or a Newcomb or a Toussant. I don’t want to give up any of those, but at some point you do have to field a whole team. And it takes quality to bring back quality. Plus, last time I checked you don’t typically use a 9 man rotation.

    Coppy, via MLB,com:

“The Braves are a gold-standard organization, and to start out the season in this manner is embarrassing and unacceptable.”

“Our fans are terrific, and they deserve so much better than this and have every right in the world to be frustrated — we are all frustrated.”

“We aren’t going to make excuses for our terrible start — close games, tough schedule, injuries — we just haven’t done the job.”

Read between the lines… the team will be forced to do something to turn the ship around. To continue down the same path is not an option, and I think the front office recognizes that. It may mean accelerating some of the plan. It may mean that a trade they were looking to make in July now has to be made in May or June. But something has to happen simply to show the fans that they aren’t satisfied with the current malaise.

So what can you do when there are so many areas of need on the current ML roster?

Well, one thing is already being whispered, and that is the ol’ standard managerial hot seat. Fair or not fair can be debated until the cows come home. But if the team gets swept in Miami, FrediG may get fired in Florida for the 2nd time in his career. That has nothing to do with his management (or mismanagement, as some might deem). It has everything to do with a team that may have already quit on him.

One thing is absolutely true. You can’t fire 25 players. So you have to make a change somewhere. Even Bobby Cox got fired… by the Braves… once. Hey, it happens.

The only other thing I can see that might make any difference whatsoever for the current team on the field is to try to pick up another veteran starter somewhere. But it’ll cost you more than the return you’ll get. The Pads have been rumored to be willing to part with James Shields for the right price. And you can bet they’ll want plenty from ATL. But he’d certainly immediately improve the rotation.

You could always circle back to CHC and see what it’d take to pry Jorge Soler away. At one time it was Julio Teheran. You can bet that ship has sailed, though. No telling what that asking price might be now. I’ll bet it starts with Aaron Blair or Folty. That’s a steep price.

I have been under the impression that they would be willing wait until the trade deadline and take a higher priced bat from a team looking to shed salary. If they have to accelerate their shopping, it immediately shifts from a buyer’s market to a seller’s market, and the prices go up dramatically.

The first who is a veteran, proven manager who will insist on running the show.

The second is a guy with very little actual managerial experience but is willing to be a toadie to upper management. No difference from any other mid management job.

IMO, he would be a very good manager. I also think that Terry Pendleton would be good. And I think that the 2 of those guys would bring 2 very different approaches and styles to the job.

But who would be best? The better, more appropriate question is who would be best for this job?

Long term, I think Eddie Perez will be a more successful manager. But I think Terry Pendleton would be better suited to take a young ballcub in transition and guide them to the next level.

Don’t know if the Braves would not a completely different perspective. I would think the Braves would like to have Eddie Perez gain more seasoning in the minors. Yes, he finally ran out of gas as he neared 100 pitches but as it appears that is the number the Braves groom their pitchers to perform to. When they near that number, they begin to stall out. Best have a stout bullpen to fill the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th innings.

Okay now, everyone agree that Ichiro will be a sure fire first ballot shoo in for the Hall of Fame when he become eligible? The old dude is still impressive. I told Ms Josie he would get a hit to tie the game in the ninth. The guy knows he does not have to hit 500 foot home runs to win ball games. I would love for Mallex Smith to study under him.

As for Mr Smith, big time clutch hit in the tenth. Bit of a rookie mistake to get caught in a rundown but Wisler pulled the team’s fat out of the fire in the bottom half of the inning.

Braves have a tough series ahead with the Dodgers coming to town but they still have to play them on the field.

Glad to see Philly comeback to win against the gNats. Don’t want to let those guys get too comfortable a lead.

Now that the Braves have a couple of wins under their belts, we know they won’t go 0-162 this season. Still, a tough schedule ahead this month. Now I know how Philadelphia felt last season as they were getting routed in April and May.

I know the Braves are not contending for even the 2nd WC playoff spot this year, so the actual number of wins is really not that big of a deal to me. All I want to see is competitiveness and progress. I want to see guys like Wisler come in in an unfamiliar spot and pull it out for his team. I want to see the rookie who is slumping come up with the game on the line and deliver. I want to see the 39-year-old catcher steal a base and keep the rookies on their toes. I want to see steps forward, and I think that’s what I saw in Miami.

Actually, it is very common for new stocks to drop in value on the day they open. Very common. Not to mention the fact that this is a “tracking stock”, or secondary offering from the parent entity, Liberty Media. The net effect is that they have increased the number of shares available.

And if you took the very basics of economics, you know that an increase in supply with just a stable amount of demand will equate to a drop in prices.

In this case, you have an increase in supply and an unknown initial demand. But the effect is the same.

Remember when Facebook went public? It held its initial public offering (IPO) in 2012 and was seen as one of the biggest IPOs in technology and Internet history. A pretty big deal, right? But their stock fell as soon as it opened, and the share prices crashed more than 50% over the next couple of months. It took more than a year for the shares bounce and trade above the $38 IPO listing price.

I don’t think Facebook has suffered much because of it.

It does interest me, though, that even the business trade rags are glomming onto the anti-Braves bandwagon. It seems in vogue to kick a guy while he’s down even if it means spinning a non-story into an angle. It would be of no surprise if it were ESPN. In fact, I would be willing to bet that very story angle was one of their lead stories on SportsCenter. I wouldn’t know, of course, because I stopped watching that fertilizer years ago.

This is all perfectly symptomatic of today’s cultural norms. The Braves were the gold standard of baseball success for two decades. And in the current political environment, we love nothing better than to see successful people or organizations fail. “Stick it to The Man!!” Nobody wants to work hard enough to achieve success anymore, we just want those who are successful knocked down to our own level of non-achievement. Then we can feel better about ourselves. Nobody gets left behind!! Of course, nobody gets ahead, either. Equality, comrades.

I suppose all of MLB (except the Yankees and Red Sox) will be hated until they adopt a $15/hour minimum wage. Let me know when that happens, OK?

The current stock prices don’t really matter to Liberty Media, though. Whether or not we like the way they allow our MLB team to be operated, the one thing they can do is successfully operate a major corporation. They know exactly what they are doing. They may see the IPO listing price drop, but given that there is a net effect of more shares floating around, the overall value hasn’t changed much. They’ve just spread out the number of holders, meaning that they have increased the potential for activity. It’s really brilliant if you think about it.

And once the new ballpark opens, with all of the team owned commercial district around it, the value of the entity will soar. Liberty will reap big profits, a percentage of that will be funneled back into the ballclub (as promised), the team will have greater resources to augment their now #1 farm system, and they will return to the success they enjoyed in the 90’s.

And the values will continue to increase.

Ain’t business fun? Now if the ever increasing over-reaching federal government (IRS) will just keeps it’s greedy mitts out of the mix…

Nobody wants to work hard enough to achieve success anymore, we just want those who are successful knocked down to our own level of non-achievement.

Which verifies my “crabs in a bucket” analogy. You see, if you put just one blue fin crab in a 5 gallon bucket, he will find a way out of the bucket, Put several in the same bucket and none will escape. The ones at the bottom will always pull down the ones trying to get out.

Buy low, sell high… It’s why so many day traders are successful, right? Stocks for me are long term. Now, a sports team as an investment? I would be so conflicted I would not be able to stand it. When you have to worry about the number of paperclips used and copies made, it’s hard to see how you can take the risk necessary to be successful. It’s like fantasy baseball on steroids.

Always some corporate raider who sees opportunity of turning players into cash cows. It also allows the opposition the opportunity to dissect your operation.

I am not a Fredi hater or anything, I just don’t like the way he manages the game in some areas… like the bullpen. I don’t like the way the guy goes by “the book” religiously. It makes him too predictable. And I an 100% certain opposing managers use that against him. No doubt.

That said, I do like the way he handles the team as a whole, I think he’s pretty good for developing players. I think he may actually put the team’s interests above his own. That’s rare.

I think he did a very good job with the deck stacked against him last season.

    But…

His shaky in game management is going to be his downfall, especially as the developing players turn the corner and the team begins to trend upward. He may survive the season because those in the know do not have any real expectations for this team in the W-L column. But don’t be surprised if he isn’t replaced in the offseason. And I personally wont be surprised if the good soldier isn’t offered another position within the organization.

Should he be canned mid-stream just to placate a grumbling fanbase, Bo Porter is the likely candidate to take the “interim” mantle to finish the campaign. He’s been in Fredi’s shoes already in HOU. Might was well be in his office too if it comes to that.

I think it is a great disservice to blame the manager for the ills of a rebuilding team. No one cites the Braves amazing first half last season despite a really crappy team, only made worse when the Braves traded Uribe and Johnson.

We all know what happened after that. We never really know what the big brass is thinking but if you keep an eye out for smoke signals, you can see signs. Does not mean you are about to be scalped but you know the scalp hunters are in the neighborhood.

Remember, many people faulted Bobby Cox for falling in love with relief pitchers and wearing out their arms so when it came to crunch time, they had nothing left. Sometimes you have to be reminded their are other guys in the pen.

It is a tough job, knowing how long to let the starters go verses wearing out your pen early. Little things like Jim Johnson pitching three days in a row, Jason Grille pitching back to back games. Sorry, but neither will hold up in the long run.

Glad to see the Braves bring up another reliever. 100 pitches don’t take the Braves pitchers very deep into the games these days. Ideally, you would like them to at least get into the seventh. Lot of 5 innings and done the past couple of weeks.

On another vein, one has to wonder where some teams are getting their advance scouting from? Their own people or ESPN or MLB talking heads? Just saying, like Dusty Baker intentionally walking a struggling Freddie Freeman to get to Adonis Garcia. Yes. the gNats still won, in spite of the moves. Reminds me of when Fredie Gonzalez had an intentional walk issued to a clearly struggling Andruw Jones, whom at the time, could not hit water falling out of a boat.

I know former St Louis manager Tony La Russa famously said, he did not want to know what a player’s season averages was, he wanted to know what a player had done for the past ten games he had appeared in. He always thought it was much more relevant. I have to agree.

On last night’s game. Not the return Alex Woods was looking forward to one might think. That’s okay, go beat the Nats or Mets… The Braves are playing with a purpose. Frenchy look like the Frenchy of old last night. Markakis is on fire.

A couple of tough customers ahead, I don’t blame Terheran for feeling ill. I might be sick another day or two. I believe it is young Matt Wisler who will be on the mound tonight for the Bravos.

Nice game for Blair, I know some of the fans in Gwennette were both elated and sad at the same time. & inning of no-no ball and then gone. Hey, it’s the minors and all the Braves pitchers are being trained to go 100 innings. Big hits by Tyler Flowers last night. Not a lot of homers in this team so don’t expect them to get showcased on ESPU or MLB. They only dig the “long ball” However, as a wise man once said, “Drive for show, putt for dough”…. Those two out singles can be a thing of beauty, they ain’t sexy but they still count…

Hat’s off to Fredie for recognizing Williams Perez is essentially a long reliever, not a starter. My advice, don’t let him pitch in high altitudes. Lots of movement on his fast ball but fools the umpire a lot… Yet, he is still young, only 25, we often forget that don’t we?

Don’t give Fredi too much credit… WillyP was pitching on just 3 days rest and was on a short leash from the get go.

That said, I totally agree that he’s destined to be a reliever and could well be a good one. One thing’s for sure, he doesn’t need to bat ever again. He came up in the 4th inning with bases loaded, 1 out, and sizzling Nick Markakis waiting behind him. He should have stood there with the bat on his shoulder and looked at 3 strikes if it came to that. Instead he hit into an easy double play. Surely somebody in the dugout told him not to swing at anything, right?

Oh wait… now I’m giving Fredi way too credit.

Casey Kelly is an extra bullpen arm to piggyback with an ailing Julio, kinda like Weber did with WillyP last night. WillyP cannot be recalled for at least 10 days. Paves the way for either Folty or possibly Aaron Blair to make Sunday’s start. Blair would be on regular rest. Folty would be on 5 days rest. Either could happen. Personally, I think Blair has done everything necessary to earn the promotion.

If you ask me, WillyP will stay in Gwinnett’s rotation as starting depth. It’s time to start bringing on the future.

I know it’s early, and stats are a little exaggerated still, but…

EOF has pitched 2.0 innings, and given up 4 H, 2 of which have left the park. His ERA is 13.50.

The SABRE-cats have a stat called FIP, or Fielding Independent Pitching. It’s supposed to measure a pitcher’s effectiveness at preventing HR’s, walks and hit batsmen, while considering the pitcher’s ability to cause a K. It’s pretty convoluted, but the intent is to level out the team’s defensive highs and lows, and measure the pitcher alone. In other words, it sort of evens the playing field, so to speak, such that the league average FIP will equal the league average ERA.

    EOF’s FIP = 18.04. Ew.

Oh, and he already has 2 L’s attached to his name in the first 3 weeks. Not pretty.

IMO, it’s time to move on…

Jace Peterson is looking pretty good out in left field. Not the power bat you want out there but that is something the Braves have a dearth of right now anyhow. With Freddie looking so lost at the plate right now, opposing pitchers can pitch with abandon. Not a good thing. I’m not say the Braves need to be swinging for the fences but they need to keep the opposition honest and opposing pitchers nervous. Not happening…

Yes, I think the Braves need to send O’Flaherty down to work out his issues. If he is done, he is done… Time to become an analyst.

I cannot blame Grille, he is simply not 100%. The Braves know that, he knows that and everyone of 29 other teams know that. He is still trying to build confidence. I agree that Grilli is still regaining strength and mechanics. If there is a residual physical problem, he can be DL’d and go on a rehab assignment upon completion of his 15 days. It’s kind of gaming the system, but it can be done.

Any team would want to be in the same situation that the Braves were in yesterday… tying run on 3B with your “star” at the plate. The difference is that when it occurred yesterday, I had zero confidence that our “star” would come through. My gut told me that he would either strike out or fly out with that prodigious uppercut swing. That would be the same uppercut swing that produced a monster fly ball that probably registered on Hartsfield Airport’s radar, but still fell meekly into the LF’s glove. He got every bit of that pitch, but didn’t “drive” it. Somebody (manager, hitting coach…) needs to address it. I wonder if anybody has the nads to do it.

And that same uppercut swing is responsible for the high rate of strikeouts. Think about it. I’m no Kevin Seitzer, but simple physics (and geometry) tells you that if you are swinging on the same plane as the path of the ball, your chances of contact are higher. But if you tilt your plane (uppercut swing), then you not only have to match speed, you have to meet a separate plane… at the exact moment they intersect.

    The result is a .163 AVG with 16 K’s in 49 AB’s, or roughly 1 out of every 3 AB’s.

Oh… and I didn’t tell that clearly enough. The huge mile high fly ball was earlier in the game. The game-ender was not hit very solidly at all, and was the proverbial “can-of-corn” that nestled into the CF’s glove. You pretty much knew it as it left the bat with pedestrian exit velocity.

And while I’m kicking him, I might as well spill all of what’s on my chest.

Freddie Freeman is a better than average player, but he’s not a “star”. For his career, he’s batting .282 and averages 22 HR and 91 RBI per year. Those are good stats, but not “star” stats. That’s the kind of numbers you want from your “supporting” player, not your “star” player.

And I don’t think you can completely attribute it to not having great hitters around him in the lineup, either. All you have to do is look over at ARI and see Paul Goldschmidt in the middle of a fairly pedestrian lineup. There you will see an example of a “star” player.

Alas, the way I see it, Braves do not have a “star” player. Maybe… just maybe our expectations of Freddie Freeman are simply too high.

Or maybe I’m being too harsh. I hope he proves me wrong, but for now my position is just that. Good player… very good player at times. Not a “star” player, though.

He’s close, folks. Especially with Adonis Garcia doing his best DH audition.

In fact, did you catch Fredi’s comment about Adonis’ 2 E’s in yesterday’s game? He said “He’s not a third baseman; he plays hitter.” (courtesy of AJC)

    Ouch.

Time for Chipper to earn his money and get he young protege straightened out. Yes, he looks more lost than Chris Johnson did. Maybe he is putting to much pressure on himself, thinking he has to carry the team.

It’s early yet but with no one to bail him out, he is sticking out like a sore thumb.

Shelby Miller continues to struggle in the desert. Think maybe the Braves broke him?

The sad thing is the Braves lost two very winnable games. I guess that is the difference in a winner and a loser. You need to nail down those games when you can to compensate for the blow outs.

Not sure I would have said that out loud if I were Fredie, sounds like something you would share with a player or you coaches. Comments like that have a way of eroding relationships. As in, “if you will talk about them, you’ll talk about me”.

The good news, the Braves are not getting blown out, the bad news is they are still losing and there is no let up in sight.

Adonis Garcia (6 errors in 27 chances this year) owns the worst career fielding pct. (.870) of any 3B w/ at least 120 chances since 1910.

Above is a link about the Braves “kid in his Mom’s basemant” who studies when to shift the defensive allignment. Now, here is my take: Defensive shifts are all well and good as long as your pitching is good enought to pitched to the shift. If you are going to play a player to pull, don’t be pitching him fastballs away….

I am not that confident in some of the Braves pitchers to do that. That and I think it puts extra pressure on a pitcher to be extra fine and they foil the shift by walking the batters.

1, AZ is higher elevation than every city save Denver.
    2. last year, Goldschmidt had Ender Inciarte (.303 ba) and A.J. Pollock (.317 ba) in front of him clogging the bases…FF? who were batting 1st and 2nd in front of him? good question…Jace? someone else I assume had to bat 2nd…it’s required, right? :/ Pitchers would have to face him or David Peralta, who hit .307(yeah, I don’t even know him at all, thought that was some SS or something, not a LF’er) so I am sure there were times they pitched around him, but with runners on….they couldn’t…
22 and 91 Is not a superstar, but there aren’t a lot of guys these days putting up those numbers these day…
    3) (Lost my place, did something, so sue me! 😉 ) Goldy (tough name to type over and over) is one of the 10 best players, in the game, perhaps top 5 as a hitter…

FF hit the ball on the screws, but nothing to show for it in the 8th. A Garcia hit one even harder, same result…

What is going on with FF right now…I do not know…

It can be summed up by a radio call from Jim Powell yesterday: “Freeman golfs one to deep left field… a mile high… will be taken in by Conforto at the edge of the warning track…”

    Freeman “golfed” one… again.

That’s what he’s doing. Uppercut city. Consistently. Watch his AB’s tonight and tell me I’m wrong. When he does make contact, even solid contact, it goes up and not out.

When a guy has become this consistently off, there are 2 possibilites in play. #1- He’s injured. He insists he’s 100% physically. #2- His mechanics are fried. Maybe it’s a result of trying to compensate for the injury last season… who knows? But the results are in.

22 and 91 is not a superstar, but there aren’t a lot of guys these days putting up those numbers these day…

Agree. I hope we get that from him this year. But my point was on a broader scale, not a shot at Freddie. He is what he is, and I hope we can get 20+ HR’s and 90+ RBI. (I’m not optimistic at the moment.) My point was more along the team context that we don’t have a real star on this team.

V, I don’t think it’s quite fair to compare FF to Goldschmidt.

Well… yeah it is. Again, in the context of talking about “stars”, Goldschmidt is a good example because he is one. And your statement is valid. They don’t compare. I don’t think Freddie should be, or could be Goldy. He doesn’t have the game. But that’s my point. Not a star.

*** Please don’t misunderstand. I’m not taking offense to the poor start (like many are) and using it as an opportunity to bang on anyone, and I’m not taking any frustrations out on any single player because I’m not surprised by the early results. Did anyone really expect much more from this early April schedule?

I guess I just got a little confused when everyone on every blog lost their friggin’ minds at the thought that the Braves would trade Freddie Freeman.

    Why?

And Coppy has even pledged his right arm that Freddie would remain. That’s great. That’s to placate a restless fanbase that cannot fathom trading away a player that cannot heap a team on his back – like Chipper did repeatedly – and carry them past the final out.

Freddie is a very nice complimentary player to pair in the order with a lineup anchor. But he isn’t the lineup anchor.

And I’m alot frustrated that FrediG keeps batting him #3 in the lineup. How many runners has Freddie left on base already this year? How many in scoring position? More than 1 yesterday. FrediG is the master at juggling lineups to get the best out of a hot bat, or to bury a cold bat. Yet FF keeps getting plugged into the most important slot in the lineup. I don’t get it.

Answer me this… Is there any 1 player on this entire roster that an opposing pitcher or manager fears?

    Maybe Markakis. Not Freddie.

And maybe things change when Inciarte returns. Maybe it helps bring balance back to the top of the lineup. Maybe that will help FF. Hey, I’m open to anything that will help him.

What would transform the entire lineup, and bring true balance to the order is a real star to insert in the #3 hole ahead of Freeman at 4… or 5.

My biggest concern with the rebuild is that we do have some really good offensive prospects on the way, but mostly #1 and #2 hitters. Heck, Ozzie and Dansby are sizzling on the farm, and being talked about as a dynamic #1 & 2 duo. Except that we already have a good leadoff guy, and probably 2 good leadoff guys. We need a RH bopper for #3.

BTW- 3B Rio Ruiz picked up another 2 hits yesterday, boosting his AVG to .381, with an OPS of 1.006. That’s exciting, folks. He’s close. Real close. Another dadgum LH bat, though. Ugh.

Still, as Ber alluded to, I hope Adonis remembers how to trudge around LF. We need to keep his RH bat in the lineup.

The suits have promised to spend $$ this offseason. I hope they will. But who will be available? Don’t expect them to overpay in the FA market. Been there; done that. Ended up with Melvin. Ew.

No, they’ll make a trade. They’ll send off one or two of their vaunted young arms and bring back that lineup anchor. Hope he’s a RH. 😉

Wonder what it would take to get the Cubbies’ Jorge Soler? Hmmm…?

    OK… now I’m rambling…

Pretty frustrating for all the Braves, their fans etc. Close in a lot of games, decent pitching but with no boppers, it is just too hard to score runs. We complained, well, some of us did, when the Braves relied on home runs to win games. Now they rely on lots of base hits.

I really like young Mallex Smith but if I were Fredie, I would fine him every time he hits a fly ball. The kid is the second coming of Willie Mays Hayes.

I thought Blair had a very good debut game. I cannot find any fault with his performance. At some point, your offense has to win some games for you.

And yes, Freddie is trying to hit everything up and out. They are just going up. The shift is clearly in his head.

  346. 355 Vox O'Reason April 25, 2016 at 9:11 am

BTW- Blair was really good yesterday despite the L. He’s here to stay. The club has pretty much said that.

And honestly I’m not at all surprised that WillyP was sent down to make room for him.

But the real question is this: Who goes down (or away) when Folty is ready? And how soon do we have to answer the question? I’m thinking sooner than later.

The AL East leading Orioles just had a pitcher go down. Bud Norris is a former O. In fact, he had a 15 Win season with them just 2 seasons ago.

They’re kinda crowded in the OF too. Maybe LF Nolan Reimold?

    Just thinkin’ out loud…

    MLBTR:

The Braves have tried to trade Hector Olivera since the outfielder’s arrest earlier this month on a charge of misdemeanor assault and battery, Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan reports. Olivera is currently on paid administrative leave while Major League Baseball investigates the alleged incident under the league’s domestic violence policy, and a suspension is widely believed to be in his future.

With this disturbing charge hanging over Olivera, it’s no shock that Atlanta would be looking to move on from the 31-year-old outfielder, and it’s as equally unsurprising that rival teams aren’t jumping to make a deal. Olivera’s trade value is so low that one executive whose club was approached by the Braves told Passan that he “can’t believe they even asked.”

Like Swisher and Bourne, other club will simply wait out the Braves to DFA Olivera and then maybe take a flier on him for league minimum.

The best the Braves can hope for is a suspension so they will not have to pay him for a month. Pretty sure the Braves would like a do over on that trade with LA.

Aaron Blair is the real deal, and he has arrived. Matt Wisler is the real deal, and he looks like he may have even turned the corner. He’s good folks. Don’t overlook him. Folty looks like a different pitcher without the blood clots in his pitching arm. (But who wouldn’t?) He looks to be the power arm the rotation sorely needs.

Prior to 2016, Erick Aybar was a very good hitter and fielder, spending his entire career with the Angels. But now in 2016…

He looks like the classic example of a guy who was heartbroken that his long-time team would trade him for someone else, and is simply playing out the string going through the motions and cashing the paycheck.

Nothing makes me more irritated that someone going through the motions, especially in a team atmosphere.

I think you will all acknowledge that I was his biggest fan prior to the season beginning. I defended him constantly. But now I think he is a waste of space in the clubhouse. You know who I am a fan of? Daniel Castro. I like Castro alot. He hustles and busts his butt to do his best on every pitch of the game. If I could twitch my nose and make things happen, I’d give Castro Aybar’s contract and give Aybar directions to Hartsfield Airport.

When Gordon Beckham is ready to return (which isn’t too far off; he’s already doing running in Orlando alongside Ender Inciarte), which IF goes away to make room for him? I don’t think it’s gonna be Castro. Danny has earned the big league playing time and is doing things to help this team win games. (Well, they aren’t winning games, but it sure isn’t Castro’s fault.)

That leaves only 2 candidates… Errorick Aybar and Jace Peterson.

True enough, Jace has minor league options left and could be sent to Gwinnett. But he’s done a decent job in LF as well as his regular position at 2B. I would sooner plant a gardenia in LF than stick Aybar out there.

I know I said I was leaving, but I have a final thought before I start doing the thing that I actually get paid to do…

Julio was dealin’ last night. That is the guy we see occasionally that we have been expecting for many years. That is the guy that can dominate a game.

So… what do you do with him? Is he the guy that can bring back the power bat this team sorely lacks? The Cubs thought so in the offseason when they dangled Jorge Soler. That would be the same Jorge Soler that the SABREcats measured last season as generating the 5th highest % of batted balls 100 mph+ from his bat behind only some guys named Stanton, Trout, Cespedes, and Valencia.

Soler also has the 6th highest average exit velocity on his “ball strikes” at 93.42 mph, behind only some guys named Stanton, Pederson, Cespedes, Cabrera, and Braun, and just ahead of some guys named Trout and Goldschmidt.

I realize that data is several months old, but it still puts his power potential in some might good company.

But we know we have to find power somewhere. Who are you willing to let go of to obtain it?

Again, I cede the floor. Back later…

I tool like Castro, he is not flashy but he is solid.

And I think Freddie is afraid to go all in on his swings. He knows his wrist is not 100 persent and is afraid to test it. Explains the reduction in bat speed…

Cubs are not trading Solar, not since Schwarber is done for the season.

Maybe, maybe not. Even with Schwarber out (who is the Cubs’ equivalent to Evan Gattis… not defensively gifted anywhere), the Cubs have options. Super Utility guy Ben Zobrist has logged many innings in LF aside from 2B. Super Utility guy #2 Javier Baez has logged many innings in LF as well as 2B and 3B. Regular 3B and reigning ROY Kris Bryant has played the last few games in LF. (IMO, that’s where he’ll end up anyway. His power bat equates more to a corner OF.)

When the Cubs dangled Soler to the Braves, the Braves also brought up the name Javier Baez, supposedly preferring him over Soler. My point is simply that the Cubs do still have the bats to part with if they truly want another big time arm in their rotation, whether it’s Soler or Baez.

Which brings me to Baez. He’d be just fine too. Maybe better. While Soler will never be known for his defense, Baez is very good defensively at several positions. 2B… check. 3B… check. LF… check. And the kid (just 23) generates some serious bat speed. True enough, he does swing and miss occasionally. But at one time in his AA campaign he led the league in AVG, so he does have some plate discipline. And his swing has been compared to that of Hanley Ramirez and Gary Sheffield.

    OK.

So if he’s a player without a regular position with the Cubs, as he is currently, can’t we make some space for him here in the ATL?

Or Soler. I can go either way. 🙂

Julio was dealin’ last night. That is the guy we see occasionally that we have been expecting for many years. That is the guy that can dominate a game.
He really was, wasn’t he? and I think you all know I am not the biggest fan of his. He may be our #1, but he wouldn’t break the Mets rotation…
but….something was different last night. he had a look in his eyes, he WANTED to stay out there, and while everyone else here is off the F.G. bandwagon (if anyone was ever really on it 😉 ) I think it took real guts to leave him out there. Yeah, I know the bullpen isn’t really good…but, the book would say take him out. Bruce Bochy, aka Captain Hook ll , would have relieved him after the first runner was on.
I’d love to see the best managers in the game try their hand with this team, as currently constituted…Boch, my man…why’d you leave the uber green rook in there , hitting .067 against lefties…to face a lefty? Guys, did you see our bench? Boch, you have to have a rightie face a lefty, it’s an UNWRITTEN RULE!!!
Boch…I am gonna quit managing and go become a color commentator! 😛

FrediG felt compelled to let the RH batter face the LH pitcher, so he trotted Aybar up there with the tying run on 3B. He had KJ on the bench… actually he had him on deck watching helplessly (kinda like Kimbrel from the bullpen in the playoffs, but I digress). And right now, Aybar couldn’t find a hit on Casey Kasem’s American Top 40.

Had he done his job properly, he would have not gone by “the book”, but would have done what all effective managers do and look at the trends.

    Aybar vs. LHP in 2016: .043 avg –> 1 H in 23 AB’s
    KJ vs. LHP in 2016: .400 avg –> 2 H in 5 AB’s

So instead of the better option coming up in a high leverage situation, he led off the next inning with nobody on.

I have a hard time giving FrediG a pass on that just because “he’s been dealt a bad hand.” I still want him to do his job.

HO is on “admin leave” until his case is thoroughly investigated. That will be followed by an appropriate suspension.

Popular rumor sites say that the team is trying to trade him, but he has less value than Errorick Aybar.

BTW- speaking of Errorick… I may need to cut him a tiny bit of slack on his fielding. Apparently the infield at Turner Field has had some issues. In fact, there was almost a grievance filed over it. Ed Mangan, one of the best in the biz, says it’s in transition. That the grass has not had enough warmer temps consistently to fully take root. I believe him.

So I shall properly call Aybar by his real name Erick.

And Erick picked up a hit in the game last night. It was late when there was no doubt left, but a hit nonetheless.

We all need to pray that he suddenly regains his stroke and that the infield grass continues to improve so that we can get something for him at mid-season.

Whew, what a relief, the Braves left little doubt they would lose last night after the first inning. No heart breaking to contend with. The fat lady sang early and often….

Poor Ryan Weber was the sacrificial lamb last night. Unlike the Braves, the BoSox could do no wrong. Every dink, every flare every struck ball seemed to find gold. The Braves, lots of men left on base… Sad, just sad….

Yep, it’s the field’s fault. Could not possibly be the players oleing balls playing them to the side. Most of the Braves errors have been of the throwing verity. I guess the dirt around first base is spotty too. Same grass that has been used for years at Turner Field. Same climate, oh wait.. there is climate change, yeah, that’s the ticket…

Like the old Lewis Grizzard joke:

“What do the Atlanta Braves and Michael Jackson have in common?

They both wear a glove on one hand for no apparent reason.”

Atlanta has had a hard fast infield for the past 15 years or so. It takes a superior defensive team to play on it. This team may as well let it grow to Wrigley Field specs. Long grass to slow down ground balls so the suspect fielders can make the plays.

However, I do have to give Daniel Castro props for being the bright star among a bunch of black holes. The kid plays with heart. He might just be the one player Coppy can get a decent return on. Teams would say sure, we’ll take on Aybar and the part of his contract but you will have to throw in Castro to make it worth our while…. Said team would then jettison Aybar…

    Courtesy ajc:

That the Dodgers left Turner Field complaining about the condition of the stadium’s infield isn’t notable when viewed in the context of finicky major league players. They tend to grumble about such things, especially when they make fielding errors like the Dodgers did during the series that concluded Thursday.

The Dodgers complained after they committed four errors in the first two games of the two-game series at Turner Field earlier this week, all on the left side of the infield. The ESPN article quoted Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and two players complaining about the field, with veteran NL second baseman Chase Utley saying the field had “changed a little bit over the years.”

ESPN reported that the Brave source cited “uneven grass and the unpredictable are where the turf meets the infield grass” as problems. Braves catcher Tyler Flowers, the team’s players’ union representative, said he wasn’t aware of any major complaints among teammates.

[Fredi] Gonzalez said [field director Ed] Mangan made changes to the Turner Field dirt surface when Braves coaches made suggestions during the offseason. He said the hybrid grass won’t grow higher until there is consistently warm weather at night.

Kinda like my Zoysia grass here in NEGA. I’ve cut it once since it began to green up and grow… 3 weeks ago. Like the man said, not enough warm temps at night to make it completely green and grow consistently. It’s tall in some places, patchy in others.

VOX, I heard the guys on Fox Sports talking about the Dodgers complaining about the playing field but said half of their errors were of the throwing verity. Said the Braves have not said anything. Why are they whining, didn’t they sweep the Braves?

Maybe Brooks Conrad should get a do over… It’s the same field for both teams.

Major League pitchers must be getting better, next thing you know, they’ll want to lower the mound again.

I think all of us bought in…to varying degrees, to this 2016. A completely unbiased fan would see it for what it was. A team full of rejects from other teams. Who, of the starting 8 would any team start, save Nick M and FF?
And right now, even FF wouldn’t be starting for many teams.
And as much as we all love Mallex Smith, he’s hitting .136 for the season. 6 whole hits. 2 for his last 18 (.111) he’s a green banana….not close to being ripe.
We all know help is on the way, rotation wise…but…if Coppy bought his own b.s. on the bullpen, then he shouldn’t be a GM. EVERY team is chuck full of guys throwing 96, 96, 97, 98…we have a great looking closer and…does anyone else even throw 95?
This team IS still playing hard for F.G., but it doesn’t matter…they are completely overmatched.
4-16…do you think there is any chance of winning a game in Boston? I’d love to see it happen just to annoy those libs…but, it’s highly unlikely. Then, onto Chicago…that will be a ton of fun…
This team is just about a lock to lose 100 games…
I know, fire the manager! That will turn things around…
It’s surely not the team Coppy and friends dredged up to play Major league baseball…..

    Handful of things…

First, nobody imagined that Freeman would be so bad for the first 3 weeks of the season. Nobody.

Second, we all got excited to see how well HO was hitting in Spring Training. Nobody imagined he’d be hitting just as consistently in a Ritz-Carlton hotel room in Arlington, VA.

Third, nobody imagined we’d be missing Ender Inciarte, the other bright spot from Spring, for all but 2 1/2 games.

Fourth, nobody imagined we’d lose Dan Winkler, the best looking reliever not names Arodys, for the year in game 5. We’ve been scuffling to replace him since. And while Hunter Cervenka has been a nice surprise, EOF has been atrocious, an empty roster spot.

Fifth, everybody was warned about the brutal April we were facing, but many didn’t realize just how brutal it would be, myself included. Scherzer twice, Strasburg twice, Wainright, Kershaw, Harvey, Matz, deGrom, Porcello, Price…

No excuses, but dadgum… that’s a murderers’ row for any team, much less a rebuilding team. And we haven’t even arrived in Chicago yet where we manage to dodge Arrieta and Lester, but still get Lackey and Hammel. Then back to NY to face Colon, Harvey and Matz again before jetting off to ARI to face Greinke. (Shelby too, but he hasn’t been very good.)

Like I said, no excuses, but it would be nice to face the Marlins again soon. Crap, just noticed that we have the World Champs coming up in a couple of weeks, too, in their place.

31 of the team’s first 41 games are against playoff teams from 2015.

When can we play the Reds and the Brewers? How about the Padres? Please?!?

I foresee Folty being called up soon too. His stint in AAA has been for him to be physically ready. He’s pretty much there.

More urgently, I expect the Braves to send last night’s punching bag Ryan Weber down today to make a spot for a fresh reliever… Casey Kelly maybe? Weber was truly just tossing batting practice by the end of his time last night. It was ugly.

Anyway, will try to wrap my head around this team and put something out by the weekend. It’s raining here so not like I can go work in the yard.

I thought the Braves would be playing an early game today but the schedule says 7:10PM start.

Games Friday and Saturday in Chitown will be at 2:20 PM.

With every loss, Fredi G gets closer to being out the door. Not his fault really, just the way it works. The generals will be looking for some wounded to shoot and Fredi is the easiest target.

With every loss, Fredi G gets closer to being out the door. Not his fault really, just the way it works.

It’s true. Do I think Fredi would do a much better job with a much better team? Well of course he would. But this is the nature of the beast. It’s also the nature of the beast that a new and emerging team usually turns the reigns over to a new and different manager. Just ask Bo Porter what happened to him in Houston after overseeing some very dismal teams and some tough development.

    It’s the business.

In 1990, the Braves turned all the coaching staff upside down and put in place the generals and lieutenants that would guide the new team into a new era. Why would anyone think this time around will be any different? The only real question is when?

Of course, in 1990 Bobby Cox was already in the organization but not on the field. Would they hand the reigns over to somebody already in the dugout or bullpen (TP or EP)?

They also brought in Leo Mazzone, who had worked with all of the young pitchers in the minor leagues, to be the big league pitching coach. I understand that AAA pitching coach Marty Reed is highly respected in baseball circles. I don’t think it’s a stretch.

If Fredi ls let go at some point, I think that Roger McDowell and bench coach Carlos Tosca probably go also. Roger for the same reasons as 1990, and Tosca because he is so close to Fredi.

Back to my earlier question: Would they hand the reigns over to somebody already in the dugout or bullpen, meaning Terry Pendleton or Eddie Perez? In my very humble opinion, I could see them turning it over to either one, but more realistically to TP. I know I’ve said it before, but I think TP as manager and EP as bench coach is a good recipe. I like Bo Porter and think he has a role on the staff, but not as manager.

Fredi has been a good soldier. He went into the retool rebuild with full knowledge of what was to come. I think the organization would like to keep him around somewhere in a broader role… but not on the field. Maybe as an assistant to one of the many FOT’s (front office types) that we currently have. I don’t see any team clamoring to hire him as their own manager.

    How about this proposal?

Fredi is relieved of his managerial duties and replaced with Terry Pendleton. Fredi is then reassigned into the front office to work with the development side of the minor leagues.

Carlos Tosca is reassigned to manage the AAA Gwinnett Braves, and Brian Snitker is brought back to his old 3B coach position, with Bo Porter moving across the diamond to fill in where TP was working.

Eddie Perez is moved from bullpen coach to bench coach, and former Atlanta Braves pitcher and current Fox analyst Paul Byrd puts the spikes back on and takes over EP’s former role.

And finally, Roger McDowell is replaced by Marty Reed, with McDowell serving as an organizational “roving pitching instructor”.

Of course, that still leaves a hole in the AAA pitching coach position. Hey… I can’t fix all their problems or I’d be the GM or VP or somethin’…

By the way… I was having fun with that above scenario. If any of thinks we really know who will be a good or bad manager, just take a look back at a couple of things.

First, Ted Turner fired Bobby Cox before hiring him back as GM and then again as manager.

And here is one of my favorites…

When Joe Torre was hired as manager of the Yankees on 1996, he was not greeted very warmly by the fans of the Bronx Bombers. Remember, the hated cross town Mets had a lowly 286-420 record with Torre at the helm, not to mention his relatively mediocre tenures with the Braves and Cards. The New York Daily News welcomed him with a huge headline that said, “CLUELESS JOE.” Another newspaper column said that Torre “came across as naïve at best, desperate at worst” and called him a “last choice, a placeholder… a man without a clue.”

Oops. Just a bit off there.

I suppose nobody, even GM’s and VP’s really has a clue as to how a certain manager will succeed with certain assemblages of players. Whether they all gel into a viable team is just a matter of chemistry and timing, and the timing part is impossible to predict.

From MLBTR: The Braves outrighted Danny Burawa off the 40-man roster and sent him from Triple-A Gwinnett to Double-A Mississippi on Wednesday, according to the MLB.com transactions page. The 27-year-old Burawa was claimed off waivers from the Yankees last August and pitched 12 1/3 innings in the Majors for Atlanta, logging a 3.65 ERA. He’s struggled in Triple-A to open the season, however, surrendering six runs (four earned) in seven innings with a troublesome 11 walks against five strikeouts. Following Burawa’s removal, Atlanta’s 40-man roster is now at 38 players.

Wonder if there is a reason for that? Is someone to be added? Is someone to be acquired?

OK… my interest is sufficiently piqued.

Sorry guys, but I like Chacin. At some point, a pitcher needs to feel like help is on the way rather than being stuck in the Alamo. Bradley, over at the AJC has picked up on our vibe about Fredi G being on the way out. Made many of the same recommendations VOX cited. We shall see if Fredi makes it past this weekend. Currently he is the favorite to be the first ML manager to be fired this season.

AJ Hince might be second on that list if the Astros don’t come about.

I don’t think Chacin is in any danger of losing his job… yet. But Norris has been horrendous since his first start. Last night not only looked bad, it looked uninspired. Did anyone else notice that the first trip to the mound was not by Roger, but by Fredi himself. Perhaps a message to deliver personally? Obviously not heeded very well.

I tried to go over (holding my nose) to ESPN to watch some of the NFL draft coverage. That lasted about 54 seconds. It’s obvious they feel they are more important than the actual.draft itself. And after hearing 6 syllables of Chris Berman and his insufferable attempts at humor, I had to leave. I’ll read about it tomorrow.

Wow, A.J. really had a another tough night Thursday. 2 passed balls, a face plant and a dropped pop up. Maybe he is beginning to feel his age.

Okay, I will not bash the Braves today, after all, they did win last night. One thing has become evident, the guys in the instant replay booth in New York are just as incompetent as the umps on the field.

I like Mallex Smith a lot but it is clear, he could use some serious coaching when it comes to base running. Maybe it’s the fact he is trying too hard to impress when he really does not have to. He will get better, he just would be better served to learn the art of base stealing in Gwinnett. Just my opinion.

Anyone remember when I posed the question as to if the gNats were really that good or the Braves just that bad? Well, I think after being swept at home by the Phillies and the Braves sandwiching an eight game and a nine game losing streak around a three game sweep of the fish, I believe we have an answer.

Dee Gordon given an 80 day suspension for PED use. Man, you think these guys would have learned by now.

The Braves have three straight day games with Chicago beginning this afternoon at 1:30 ET. At least they won’t have to face Arrieta.

Prediction…. If the Braves lose all three games in Chitown to the Cubbies, Fredi will ceased to be the manager of the Braves in Atlanta.

Many are saying it is a tough year to have early first round picks in baseball. The best picks are prep pitchers but young pitchers picked in early have a pretty bad track record. Sure not like football and basketball who have the NCAA to provide prospects.

Of course, the landscape is littered with can’t miss prospects who could not live up to the hype.

Note to NFL general managers: A mediocre QB will take you further behind a good offensive line than a great QB behind a mediocre offensive line.

Gil’s Corollary: If the player with the most rushing yards on your team is your quarterback, you are doomed to failure and you are delusional if you think otherwise.

</>If you ask me, it’s the eyes… Yes VOX, I thought that to be possible too. I know, while I am quite a bit older than A.J., I know my depth perception is not nearly what it once was. With the way pitchers can make a baseball do things akin to a whiffle ball, it is a wonder anyone can catch anything.

Blair gets to make his major league debut today against the Cubs. The weather is going to be on the cool side (around 50 degrees) so I don’t expect him to be in the game much beyond 80 pitches. It’s not much warmer than that here in Mechanicsville. Just a dreary day, perfect for staying indoors and watching baseball.

Back when I was able to play golf, I had an absolute minimum temp for being able to play. 45 degrees. Golf can be a pretty miserable game if you keep score so why add to the misery? As my back got worse, my bowling scores and my golf scores got transposed… Hey, it happens…

For me it was 40. I played once in 40 degrees and misty rain. It was miserable, but back then (a very long time ago), nothing stopped the game unless the course was closed.

Also back then, I played twice a week – once on the weekend and once mid-week. After I married the fabulous Mrs. Vox, the mid-week game went away. After we had kid #1, the weekend games became occasional. After we had kid #2, the weekend games went away altogether.

    Priorities, ya know.

Yes, golf can be pretty expensive. And time consuming… Life has a way of getting in the way of fun…

Lots of opines on the MLB channel about Dee Gordon’s PED use. I still think Deeroe juice when he came up with the Braves. The fact he blew out his knee while making a throw from short was a tip off. he was gone after that season and off to Texas. Byrnes always played like his hair was on fire. Who knows for sure? I’m certain all of us have secrets they would not like to share. Just being a human being is all it takes. It is why I am thankful for God’s Grace…

One has to believe Albies will arrive sooner than later. I think around the first of June.

Not sure they’d jump him all the way from AA to the bigs at age 19,but I certainly think he’ll move up a level to AAA. And I think Dansby will also move up to fill the void left at AA.

Not sure we’ll see any more of the position guys. Maybe Rio, but he’s still pretty young himself (21). I certainly think we’ll see Folty very soon and probably Tyrell Jenkins at some point. Lucas Sims has methodically moved through the system and is now showing what all the buzz has been about. I don’t think it’s a stretch to think we might see him too.

So, the game finally got underway. Blair a little shaky in the first but better in the second. Of course the Braves still having problems getting runners in. remember last season how the first half the Braves had a ton of two out hits with runners in scoring position.

Wind blowing in today. Throw it down the middle kid…

Yes, Albies in double A but the trend in recent years has been to put the better talent has been at AA and lots of players have skipped Triple A. Do we even know who is playing short and 2nd at Gwinnett? Okay, maybe VOX does but anyone else without looking it up?

Sigh, Blair had all the stars aligned today for a win but the Braves fail to score after loading the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh. I do look forward to the return of Ender. Maybe they can send Stubbs back to triple A.

CB Buckner has a very strange strike zone. Kind of all over the place. Not a good game to have money on. The umpires have been way too involved.

So, will Orgando lose this one for Blair? He had help from a weak offense.

Well, A couple of thoughts from last night’s game (only saw the last 2 innings, and the post game show)
Does Mallex Smith look a bit different at the plate than a few days ago? Or have I just never seen him hit a ball hard? 😉 Just looked a lot better swinging IMO.
Also noticed Frenchy may been a bit more open at the plate now than when he used to play here?
FF seems to have fixed whatever was wrong with his swing.

Well, the never manager will get super smart hitters like Adonis to stop swinging at EVERY PITCH. And get the other hitters to somehow hit a baseball when you have the bases loaded, and no one out…

Ber, I am not advocating the dismissal of Fredi G. just stating the obvious. I don’t know what I don’t know. I don’t know what kind of assurances Gonzalez were given if any when the Braves fired Frank Wren. I think anyone who knows anything about baseball knows it is ultimately up to the players to win or lose games but I also know a good manager can get more out of a team than a bad manager can. I also know Bobby C was famous for wearing out a young pitcher.

I remember when a shock collar was suggested for Andruw Jones every time he took that long loopy swing trying to pull everything to right field and leaving hundreds of potential runs on base.

The idea of using the shock collar is still underrated and under appreciated. I think the Braves could have straightened out Frenchy instead of trading him to the Mets.

He probably would still wince every time he saw an low outside slider.

I still think Albies will make it to the majors this season. Lining up to be when the Braves unload Aybar around the trade deadline or before. The Braves are hoping Aybar continues to improve.

Would not be surprised to see Frency/Johnson/Garcia (take your pick) traded to a team looking for a right handed or left handed bat. All are very affordable an would make a good short term investment.

Will have to wait and see who is still in contention and who gets hurt to have an idea who will go where when.

Eric O’flaherty was only charged with one run but his was the big one. I cannot tell for sure but it looks like his curve/slider moves laterally but is flat. It’s like it is setting on a big ol’ tee. You see the hitter’s eyes get big and wide. Also see the same out of the Braves catching corp.

Orgando and O’Flaherty both will likely be discarded soon. The Braves are like a traveler caught out in a storm right now.. They are looking for shelter all the while being stuck in the rain without so much as an umbrella. Just as well because the way it is going for the Braves, lightning would probably hit the umbrella anyway.
