154: Halfway Done & It’s Still Spring Training

The Braves have now played 79 official games to date. That is 3 shy of the 82 which would mark the official halfway point of the season. 27 and 52 for a winning percentage of .342 and 20.5 games out of first in the NL East. When the Braves broke camp in April, I do not think anyone had any delusions that the Atlanta club would be in contention for the division title but I also don’t think folks thought the Braves would lose so many games so quickly.

To be fair, the Braves had one of if not the toughest schedule for the first two months of the season. We were told by the folks who were supposed to know that while the team was in full rebuild mode, they would be competitive. I guess they are right in one regard, they are in contention for the number one overall pick in the 2017 MLB amateur draft. It has been brutal to watch this team night after night.

Of the 25 players on the opening day roster, pitchers John Gant, Williams Perez and Eric O’Flaherty are on the DL.

Gant, Perez, O'Flaherty

Gant, Perez, O’Flaherty

MIA:  Jason Grilli and Bud Norris have been traded, Jose Ramirez was demoted to Triple A Gwinnett and Alexi Ogando has been designated for assignment.

MIA

Outfielders Hector Oliveria is on the “suspended and we don’t know what we are going to do with him when he comes back list” and Drew Stubbs was released and is currently on the 60 day DL for a strained left pinky toe. He was claimed off waivers by the Texas Rangers when the Braves released him after 20 games.  Infielders/utility player Kelly Johnson has been traded to the New York Mets, again, and Gordon Beckham is nearing the end of a stint on the DL for a pulled hamstring.

111

Let us not forget that opening day manager Fredi Gonzalez and bench coach Carlos Tosca were also let go and Rob Smith was replaced by veteran pitcher Buddy Carlyle to manage replay review.

1111

So let’s recap, 7 of 12 pitchers and 4 of 13 position players have are not on the current 25 man roster. That does not account for guys like Jace Peterson spending time in triple A, Mallex Smith playing in place of Ender Inciarte and currently on the DL for a broken left thumb after being hit by a pitch. Adonis Garcia being sent down to learn a new position which he has yet to play, Erik Aybar being on the DL, although he was not missed to be honest and Daniel Castro who has since been up from Gwinnett and sent back down after hitting about a buck fifty.

These are not all of the transactions made by the Braves to date but it gives you a sense of the unsettled nature of the Braves as a team for the first half of the season. Recent moves have been mainly in the pitching staff. Tyrell Jenkins, Joel De La Cruz, Casey Kelly and Mauricio Cabrera coming up. Dario Alvarez being acquired off waivers from the Mets and Aaron Blair and Marks Marksberry going down. There have been over 40 transactions involving Atlanta players going up, down out or in to date. That does not include draft signings. No wonder the Braves got confused as to the availability of Emilio Bonifacio when they tried to bring him up to the majors and ended up playing a man short when they discovered he was not yet eligible.

Like I said, it has been very spring training like as to who will be in the lineup each night and as for starting pitching, the Braves only have two reliable starters with Julio Teheran and Matt Wisler on the roster since the Braves have traded Bud Norris. Mike Foltynewicz was reactivated on June 30th but he is still a work in progress. Most observers still expect Erick Aybar to depart from Atlanta before the end of the season. I would not be surprised to see Dansby Swanson and Ozzie Albies make their debuts in Atlanta in August.

Still likely to be on the auction block would be Jeff Francoeur, Arodys Vizcaino, Jim Johnson and Nick Markakis. For the right return, even the Braves ace Julio Teheran could be gone for the right return of prospects. If the Braves can make it to September, they can load of their bullpen with arms like the Rockies did a few years ago and let the relievers pitch two innings each game. Uh, just like spring training….

Ber, I guess it’s a little like buying a used car, depends on your budget and your need. That plus who was the previous driver. Lesson from dad… never buy a used car from a teenager, poor person or rental company unless you are willing to put lots of money into it.

To me, a sports car is not such a bargain when you need a mini van. Pitchers are sports cars… A lot have been driven pretty hard and the maintenance is spotty.

Watched all 19 innings of the Toronto vs Cleveland game and then watched the Braves vs Marlins go at it for 12… Whew, that was a lot of people left on base.

At some point you know your bullpen is going to give up runs, you just hope it’s the other guy. Braves could have won that game but the simple fact remains, when you have a guy on 2nd with no outs or third with one out, you have to get that guy home.

I don’t thinks the odds favor the Braves today going against Fernandez.

Lucas Harrell, today’s emergency starter for the Braves, is akin to the temporary spare most new cars come equipped with. It is only designed to get you off the highway and to the repair shop. Do not drive it over 50 miles and not over 45mph. Mike Stanton might well recover his stroke today.

Mike Snitker may well have a stroke today…. Maybe Fernandez will wear himself out by the sixth inning from running the bases and swinging the bat.

Try not to give up more than 3 runs in five innings Lucas…

In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, each team is allotted a $700,000 base and a bonus pool with four slot values based on the team’s record in 2015 for the international signing period, which started on Saturday. Atlanta’s overall pool total for this year’s signing period is $4,766,000, which means the signings will thrust them into the maximum penalty.

Teams that exceed the pools by 0-5 percent have to pay a 100 percent tax. Teams that exceed the pools by 5-10 percent are not allowed to sign a player for more than $500,000 during the next signing period, and they have to pay a 100 percent tax on the pool overage. Teams that exceed the pools by 10-15 percent are not allowed to sign a player for more than $300,000 during the next signing period, and they have to pay a 100 percent tax on the pool overage.

In the most severe penalty — such as the Braves this period — teams that exceed the pool by 15 percent or more are not allowed to sign a player for more than $300,000 during the next two signing periods, and they must pay a 100 percent tax on the pool overage.

All those clauses make my head hurt.

The Braves did sign a bunch of players though.

Ah baseball, once again we are shown (especially me) of why they play the games and don’t just go by what should happen. The Braves unload on arguably one of the best pitchers in the National Leagues and a 31 year old journeyman claimed off the scrap heap by the Braves hurls a gem of 6 innings of 1 run on three hits ball. Walked 1 and struck out 5 and made a leg save on a hard hit ball up the middle by Fernandez.

Jace Peterson is once again proving of how much a player loaths to go back to the minors after playing for an extended period in the majors.

Braves win 9-1 even after a little ninth inning drama…

Gil, that was a shocking game, wasn’t it? I sat down when it was 3-1 braves, and to see Fernandez get pummeled like that, amazing! Also surprised that Mattingly left him in there to get beaten up…no one was even warming up when it was 3-1 bases loaded….glad he didn’t though!
I just looked up Jace Peterson’s AAA numbers…I thought I heard/read he hit .245 down there… .186???? He (and the braves) are soooo lucky that the braves did call him up… .295 BA now….

Unless the Braves had 1 1/2 runs at the time, I don’t see how it’s possible. Must be that new math I have heard so much about….

A comment or two about yesterday’s “international” signings. It appears the Braves got the number one pick of the “draft” with the signing of the Maitan. It seems that the Braves spent about the same amount in the International market as they did in the 2016 free agent draft. Looks to me that the top talent commanded about the same amount that corresponding players in the 2016 amature draft.

It also looks as if the Braves concentrated on position players as opposed to pitching prospects. Now, a lot of these kids are a long ways away from being seen in a major league uniform. Still, you have to start somewhere and it looks as if the Braves are turning the corner on talent.

I do not know the statistical odds on a player being drafted and making it to the big leagues but of all the kids drafted each year, it is a pretty small sampling. I guess what it really comes down to is how many numbers you can guess right on you lottery ticket. I don’t think the odds are quite as great as winning the lottery but it is probably close to the odds of being struck by lightning.

Of course, the odds of being struck by lightning are significantly better if you stand in the open on top of a hill in the middle of a thunderstorm than if you are inside on a clear sunny day. Like the joke about the guy who prays repeatedly for God to allow him to win the lottery without success, finally, after like the tenth week in a row of being disappointed that his prayers are going unanswered, he again pleads for God to answer his request. A somewhat exasperated voice comes back from the heavens saying, “BUY A TICKET FIRST”….

Well, it looks like the Braves front office has finally bought a ticket.

Del La Cruz shows us yet again how one bad inning can undo a team’s chance to win. Giving up 7 runs early on a lot of pitches up pretty much signaled this one was over early.

Not totally Del La Cruz’s fault. The defense did not help him out much. Oh well, tomorrow is a new day.

V, I guess I am just getting old…I just can’t buy into a guy being a better pic for a team just cuz that 4th starter is cheaper than a potential #1 or #2

The new reality of today’s baseball: controllability. Young controllable players are better for the long term. Gone are the days where teams spend like political candidates before a primary on a rental. Even the Yankees operate under a budget these days. (Possible exception, the Dodgers. But when has anyone from the LAnd of fruits and nuts done anything that made sense?)

As to the Braves spending more than double their Int’l allotment, it was in the plan all along. The Braves backed up the Brinks truck this year on guys they have been targeting for over a year and were able to pull it off without competition from the Yankees, Dodgers and Red Sox because all of them were in the “penalty box” for this year. And now the Braves themselves will be in the “penalty box” for the next two, but planned such all along. They do not intend to invest heavily in that market again for the next couple of years.

And they did bring in a haul… 4 of the Top 16 rated Int’l players, including the much ballyhooed IF Kevin Maitan and C Abraham Gutierrez. And we’ve talked ad nauseum about Maitan, but Gutierrez was a great signing himself.

Who is Abraham Gutierrez? Well, allow me to introduce him…

Fangraphs: One more name has been brought up as a high end guy in the 2016 class: Venezuelan C Abraham Gutierrez, who trains with former big leaguer Carlos Guillen. Gutierrez is average to plus across the board with precocious all fields power and the tools to stick behind the plate. He’s obviously also very young, so it’s very early to throw lofty comparisons around like with Maitan, but scouts have said Gutierrez’s overall game is along the lines of Mike Piazza.

And don’t think that these kids must be 4-5 years away. Remember, Andruw Jones hit 2 HR’s against the Yankees in the World Series at age 18. Now, I’m not saying we’ll see these guys at age 18, but I am saying that top talent often emerges earlier than most guys. Seems more and more that some of the top guys make their debut at 19 and 20. Andruw was 18; Andrelton was 19; each Upton brother was 19… you get the idea. Getting into the system now will allow then to move up as quickly as they progress and emerge when ready, whether it’s 4 years or 3. Who knows?

Welcome back Vee, we missed your opinions and research.

Agree on how the Braves view this year’s Latin talent. I also suspect that they believe there will be changes made in the MLB bargaining agreement on how international players will be treated or included in future drafts.

I know some teams will still want to mine the Japanese Leagues for talent but I also think some of the other entities will want to get in on that action.

At least the Braves have a much better talent pool to work with. Things should be pretty interesting in the Braves system for a while as all these kids develop.

Aaron Blair got hammered again yesterday. One has to wonder what he is doing mechanically that has thrown him off course.

In yesterday’s game with Philly, De La Cruz could not get his pitches down in the second inning. He recovered after that but again, it shows what a fine line it is between being successful or a bust as a major league pitcher. I don’t know if Cruz was too amped up or what but he calmed down the rest of the way.

Caberra is another one who can be unhittable at times but very ordinary at others. I think what happens it they try to get too cute and stop being aggressive and the next thing you know, they can find the strike zone and they don’t get the benefit of the doubt on border line pitches. I would like to see him have a little more movement on his fastball. I’ll take 95 with a wrinkle over 100 straight as a laser any day.

I don’t have any delusions on how quickly these young kids can get to the show nor how good they will be or the impact they will have. I know these are dark times in Braves Country but we have passed through this valley before.

I really like Ender but he might just be a bit fragile to be an everyday player. He sure can light a spark though when he is on his game. You can see the measurable drop off in ability between Boni in center field as opposed to Inciarte. It’s easy to forget how young he still is.

    Now, back to the mainland…

The 2016 non-waiver trade deadline is Aug. 1 at 4pm ET. Why Aug. 1 instead of the traditional July 31? July 31 is on a Sunday this year, so they moved it back to Monday.

We should all expect much chatter and activity from our Los Barves between now and then. As Gil mentioned, any veteran not named Freddie Freeman should not get too comfortable.

As noted earlier, Erick Aybar is even garnering a little trade interest following his hot June since returning from the DL. (I’ve also seen it mentioned a time or 2 that he is annually a very slow starter, but strong finisher. Let’s hope he can keep it up for another 2-3 weeks.)

I’ll rank my personal opinion as to what guys will be moved and in what priority:

#1, CL Arodys Vizcaino. Hard throwing closers traditionally bring back a haul at the deadline, but also seem to have the shortest shelf life. I appreciate Viz, but hope he brings back a hitter as he’s out the door.

#2, RHRP Jim Johnson. See above, except insert “veteran set up men” for “closers”. Relievers, with some exceptions here and there, seem to have a revolving door.

#3, LHRP Ian Krol. I’d like to see him stick around, but lefty relievers are valuable, and the ATL bullpen has about 28 of them. Krol seems the most logical one to be traded to me.

#4, OF Ender Inciarte. I know… that’s a tough one. But he’s our CF, and Mallex Smith is our CF. Neither have much power, and an OF of Smith, Inciarte, Markakis is ridiculously weak. I’d prefer to trade Markakis, but I don’t see him having much value a this point. Whomever patrols LF in 2017 needs to have real HR power. (Actually, Markakis needs to be moved to LF at this stage of his career, but that’s another discussion for another time.) Inciarte is young, dynamic and under team control for a few years. He has tremendous trade value. He could easily be included in a blockbuster type deal with a pitcher.

#5, IF Gordon Beckham… assuming he returns from the DL and hits as he did before going down with injury. He’s the perfect bench piece for a team in contention.

#6, OF Jeff Francoeur. I’d prefer to keep his leadership in our young clubhouse, but like Beckham, he’s an ideal bench piece for a team in contention.

#7, RHSP Julio Teheran. Coppy says the deal would have to be huge. Somebody could pull the trigger on such a deal ahem, Boston. That’s the type of match that could result in the aforementioned blockbuster deal.

    27 days and counting…

The Braves play at a normal time tonight. I hate having to keep track of all these different starting times.

The Phillies appear to have gone all in on replacing Howard at first base. Too bad, I liked the big guy. I am pretty sure the Phillies are trying to unload him and not have to eat all of his remaining contract but like many of the Braves players who’s contract outlasted their abilities or desire to perform. Most teams will just wait out the Phils and pick him up for major league minimum.

I still think he could help an American League team which needs a left handed bopper.

Oh how the Marlins must be pooping in their pants after Gilcarlos Stanton’s swoon. The poor guy is lost at the plate right now. I think that fastball to the face really messed with his psyche. For better or worse $300MM is a lot of payroll even if it is back loaded which I don’t think the Marlins ever expected to be on the hook for. A bigger version of their Cliff Floyd deal back in the day. The Fish got his services cheap and they flipped him to the Mets when the big money cut in.

One thing we should remember, other than the Dodgers who seem to have an unlimited credit card, other GMs are very wary of hasbeens. Unlike most of the talking heads on ESPN who never seem to actually know if a player has any ability and get mesmerised by the back of their baseball cards, most actually understand what a player is really worth.

No matter, only one team will be standing at the end of the season and it all depends on who gets hot at the end. Of course, some of these teams are on the bubble and if you don’t buy a ticket, you don’t get a chance, no matter how slim.

Looks like the Giants have gotten past their dependency on Hunter Pence. They have some talent at AA Richmond but I don’t see them parting with them.

I think Jim Johnson has actually returned to the level of ability he had in Baltimore. His sinker is working better than I have seen in years. I think he is way undervalued right now and could make a big difference for a team in need of a late innings reliever.

Yes, let’s hope Aybar continues his good work for the rest of July. Personally, I have had enough of him. It appears he and Adonis have struck up a friendship. maybe we could come up with a package deal.

V, I hear ya on espn (I still DVR Baseball tonight, just cuz mlb.tv is so odd with their highlight shows, with live look ins, games on late, etc) they had a show on last night…very late. I set it up to record for 90 minutes instead of 60 cuz either games, or last night, for some unknown to anyone with a brain reason, they finished up a Sportscenter, then started it up again, instead of baseball tonight…cuz, you know, they couldn’t put one or the other shows on 1 of their 47 other channels…so, when it finally came on, 1:42 instead of 1 am, they had a woman hosting it. Now, CL, please take what I am saying with a grain of salt. I have seen them have good, knowledgeable female broadcasters on espn. Linda Cohen is great (when I did see her) she really knows her sports…….other women in the past too (No longer with the uber liberal network cuz, they got “old” ) this is probably the 4th different women that has hosted B.T. She flat out sucked. 1 woman I saw last year would be “rusty” would start to smooth out, get comfortable with the guys, then they put her on one of the many NFL shows as a host…then there was the Latina woman that was there to roll her R’s and pronounce latin players names in an “Authentic” way. :/
So, the show last night, has a woman hosting for the first time, clearly they didn’t give her enough time to really prepare(I am sure the plan all along was for her to host, but however many shows they do as practice shows, it wasn’t enough) she clearly doesn’t know baseball…sad…and who did they have with John Kruk? Our ol’ buddy F.G! He didn’t fare much better…sigh….
Anyway, ESPN sucks, stinks, reeks….but, just like Politics, we have no say in anything that happens, or will happen in the future….

Funny, I don’t remember that, cuz it didn’t happen 😉
Coppy said that a few days ago… Andruw Jones was born April 23, 1977, and he played in the W.S. in 1996 making him …..19…
I sure hope Coppy is better at math than he appears to me….maybe he was still in diapers when Andruw first started to play? 😛

but, point taken. Hopefully, when they start playing games next year, they will be ready by 2019-2020.
Meanwhile, in 2017 and 2018, we are going to need a left fielder, right fielder, 3rd baseman, a catcher… (actually, Flowers has been very good this year, but can we count on him to be a productive hitter after this year?)

Ber, by my calculations, they’ll attempt to address Catcher via trade and LF via Free Agency. Markakis is the RF, for better or worse. 3B could come via trade, or Rio Ruiz may get his shot.

BTW- Rio has been much better as of late, slashing .310/.394/.379 in the month of June.

Gil said sorta tongue in cheek earlier that perhaps Adonis and Aybar should be a combo package. I think they’d trade Adonis in a heartbeat if they got a decent offer.

1 PM game today, going to be a hot one. Not sure about the game… Pretty sure there will be some home runs hit. I’m hoping Tyrell will not be traumatized by the ordeal. Pretty sure that is what happened with Arron Blair by the way. Hard to pitch when you flinch after every throw.

Okay, seriously, nothing really to worry about, it is just the system playing itself out. Young pitchers are seldom successful out of the box. I think about Jeff Samardzija who had great stuff early on, the next great pitcher who was not supported by some bad Cubs teams. I think it got in his head.

Young pitchers get knocked around early on, part of the learning process. Now, not saying everything is all light and sunshine, just that we cannot expect too much at this point, just look for progress….

As you all know, I have been very high on Tyrell Jenkins from the day he came into the Braves system. Nothing has changed. I don’t necessarily expect him to be Clayton Kershaw today. He’s still young, and if it the Braves were not in full rebuild mode, he’d still be developing in AAA. Still I think we’ll see glimpses of the pitcher we can expect in 2017 and beyond. Folks, he’s going to be a solid #2 or #3 for years to come.

Mark it. I’ll gladly take the prophet star when it comes to fruition.

I look forward to seeing a rotation that includes Julio, Wisler, Folty and Tyrell. Insert the big lefty Sean Newcomb, and you have something.

So then… what of Aaron Blair? John Gant? Williams Perez? Manny Banuelos? Casey Kelly? Lucas Sims?

Ahhh…. now you get an idea of the “currency” of which Coppy has spoken often.

    OK… I gotta say it…

I’ve been pretty happy with the job Snit has done since getting the job, but I hate the call to remove Jenkins with 2 outs in the 4th and a runner on 3B. Absolutely hate it. Naturally, it’s easy to second guess given that Krol immediately allowed a hit to score the runner. But I’d hate it still even if Krol had gotten the out and gotten out of the inning unscathed.

In fact, had Jenkins himself given up the tying run, I’d feel better than I do now.

Jenkins was not high in his pitch count (64 pitches) and had earned the opportunity to achieve his first major league W. If they’re all in on developing these young pitchers, then let them get themselves out of jams… or else they’ll never learn how to do it.

I feel like Tyrell deserved better.

I forgot about it being an early game…flipped by to see the braves had a 3-2 lead, double play, looked like all was good, then the 2 run homer. Can I pick the time to start watching or what? :/ Not my fault though!
In fact, I see Viz do that a lot when I am watching. Amazed he only has a 2.75 ERA (or did before homer)
Since it was his first start, perhaps they were worried about his pitch count?

Ber, Tyrell had mad 67 pitches at that point and Snitker had projected around 75 pitches for the big righty.

I am not sure what the Braves current game plan is. Do you think maybe they were worried they might not get next year’s over-all number one draft pick…

When the replay was shown on Quick Pitch, they showed it from a side angle but the live shot on Sports South clearly showed Bryant moving his knee into the pitch. Yes, it does. Injuries are often the reason yet we remain clueless. I understand the need to not inform the opposition of weaknesses but maybe teams should just bite the bullet.

That said, I guess it is a bit of subterfuge which can cause a team to expend energy on a blind alley.

Okay, enough “Stuff”, will get back to the Braves baseball… Team is not where we want it to be but they do play an entertaining game. More so since they have rediscovered the instant offense of the long ball.

Ender got fooled on a ball lined to the outfield by the Cubs catcher, should have been scored as a single with a two base error but was generously scored as a triple. The ball took a funny hop on him and he misplayed it but oh well, that’s home cooking.

Congratulation to Frenchy who celebrates 10 years major league service today. Oh what could have been if it had not taken so long for him to realize that even with talent, you have to have effort and make adjustments.

Dario Alvarez… Another guy who people have to say, where did he come from? The Braves claimed him off waivers after he was released by the Mets. the Mets said he always was capable of pitching the way he is for the Braves now but never could for the Mets when he was called up from triple A.

Don’t know if the Braves staff saw a flaw in his delivery they thought they could fix or he does not feel any pressure pitching for a last place team. Like Yogi said,“ninety percent of the game is half mental.”

Well, here’s yet another strong justification for “you can never have too much pitching”.

The Mets’ stable of young and talented hurlers are about as good a group as we’ve seen since the Oakland trio of Mark Mulder, Tim Hudson and Barry Zito, and our own Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, & Avery before that.

But now Matt Harvey is out for the rest of the year with thoracic outlet syndrome and the impending surgery and recuperation.

Both Steven Matz and Noah Syndergaard are dealing with bone spurs in their pitching elbows, and Zach Wheeler is still not fully recovered and rehabbed from his own TJ surgery.

So the Mets rotation now consists of Jacob deGrom, the less than 100% Matz and Syndergaard, the ageless Bartolo Colon, and _________ .

There was a time that I considered them the NL faves. Not anymore.

July 10th…. After watching the final game of a three game set against the White Sox, you wonder how this team can be 27 games under .500, then you remember, Oh yeah… April and May…

Foltynewicz pitched like a seasoned veteran today. do you think he finally got the message that he could not rely almost exclusively on a 98 mph fast ball? Can he put two of these games back to back? Ill worry about that next week sometime. In the meantime I am just going to enjoy this one.

Nice to see a team playing hard and not just phoning it in which other Braves teams have done in the past.

Who of this crowd will still be with us after the All-star break? Prime trade candidates have to be Jim Johnson, Jeff Francouer, and even new comer Jeff Harrell. If the Braves had any catching prospects, I would say Pierzynski but he might be too valuable a piece for the Braves considering what they would get back in return. Markakis is a possibility or Inciarte but I thinks Enders’ price might be pretty high right now given that Mallex is still on the mend. Maybe Gordon and of course Aybar but I expect Erick’s trade value to be pretty low.

Good morning all.Catching up from the weekend…

We saw potential realized with Folty yesterday. I honestly believe that we will see many more of those games over the course of his career. Much promise there.

And the bats have finally come alive… just in time to have their momentum stalled by the ASB. Ugh.

As expected, Emilio Bonifacio cleared waivers and was outrighted off the Braves’ 40-man roster and assigned to AAA Gwinnett. He had the option of rejecting the assignment and becoming a FA, but chose instead to head to Gwinnett. No surprise; we expected all of this.

I’m a little worried about TFlow’s hand. The team is calling it a “strained” hand. Now, I’m no doctor, and I did NOT stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I do know that “strain” refers to soft tissue and not bone. I also know that “strain” refers to muscle, as opposed to “sprain”, which refers to tendons and ligaments, the connecting tissue. Yet, the injury has reportedly been connected to last weekend when he was hit on the same hand by a pitch from Marlins closer A.J. Ramos. How that all comes together to have a “strain” is a little mysterious to me. I’m hoping the injury is not more serious than the team is letting on. His left hand is the hand that receives all the 95+ pitches. It already takes a pounding over the course of a game.

Viz was conspicuously absent from the ChiSox series. The Braves are saying for the record that it’s nothing to worry about… that he has a rash, some sort of topical infection, on the area around his elbow. Never heard that one before. I suppose we’ll see what develops there, if anything. (For the record, I expect Viz to be traded before the deadline.)

Also over the weekend, Baseball America updated its Top 100 prospects list. The Braves own 6 of those 100. They are:

    #7 Dansby Swanson (SS, AA)
    #17 Ozzie Albies (2B, AA)
    #33 Sean Newcomb (LHP, AA)
    #77 Kolby Allard (LHP, Rookie)
    #78 Mike Soroka (RHP, A)
    #95 Touki Toussaint (RHP, A)

For the record, #1 is Bosox future star Yoan Mancada, who could probably play anywhere on the field he wants too besides P & C. Cleveland has the most prospects on the list with 7, although none in the top 20. Also, the Marlins only had 1 player in the Top 100, at #100. Whew! Just made it. But that’s not quite as bad as the Angels and the Tigers, who are not represented at all.

On TV yesterday, the talking heads said Vizciano was suffering from elbow “soreness” . I guess that could mean a rash but after watching him the past couple of weeks getting hit around, I suspect it is more than just a rash.

I don’t expect “fire sale” prices for any of the Braves players other than Aybar. It is only a matter of time until the Ozzie and Dansby show arrives in Atlanta. I haven’t done the deep diving as yet on who needs what but I doubt anyone is beating down the door to get to Aybar.

I’m sure folks have been calling about Viz and Jim Johnson, they are just haggling over price at this point.

I think Jim Johnson is a pretty reliable back end of the rotation guy, the trick is to not over use him at this point in his career. Like an old car, it not that it can’t run 100 mph, just not for long.

Cabrea is the Braves next closer in waiting, he just needs to come up with either a fastball with a wrinkle. I hope he paid close attention to Folty yesterday.

OK… one more little tidbit this morning before I turn my attention to my paying job…

As Gil notes, the Braves enter the ASB at 27 games under .500 at 31-58. Let’s look at how they arrived there:

    April: 5-18
    May: 10-18
    June: 12-16
    July: 4-6

What’s the point? Well, baseball is a game of trends more than any other sport. Teams play 162 games – typically 6 out of every 7 days. That’s one reason you cannot analyze baseball the same way you do football or basketball. More than for any other sport, baseball games cannot be taken in a vacuum and micro-analyzed. Just because a player goes 0-4 in a game doesn’t mean his career is over.

The wise guys analyze the trends. What has a player done over his last 10-14 games? What has a team done over their last 2 weeks?

In the case of the Braves, each month has shown a major improvement (although it’d admittedly be difficult to trend downward from April).

How the team finishes July will be something key to keep an eye on. Hopefully the team can finish .500 for the month and take that upward momentum into August.

On Flowers… sure sounds like a deep bone bruise or fracture to me. It’s possible it could be muscular tissue involved but given the mechanism of injury, I would put my money on bone… Don’t be surprised that upon further review, the Braves medical staff diagnose it as hairline fractures or some variation there of.

Reminds me of when NASCAR had 43 cars in the starting grid and you had a lot of start and park guys. The would not even have a pit crew, they would run a lap or two and go behind the wall. They had to give a reason for dropping out of the race so you would always see terms like “vibration” or “electrical” as the reason for dropping out. They were hard to disprove…

Anyway, I think they would not want to reduce Vizciano’s value by claiming anything seriously wrong with him. I don’t think we will hear anything further on Flowers until next Friday.

I haven’t done the deep diving as yet on who needs what but I doubt anyone is beating down the door to get to Aybar.

Keep your eye on injuries for the next 3 weeks. If a contending team has a middle infielder go down with an injury that puts their starter on the shelf for more than 3 weeks or so, that’s when Aybar will be moved.

I’m sure folks have been calling about Viz and Jim Johnson

I bet you;re right about that.

Cabrea is the Braves next closer in waiting

Maybe, but I suspect Cabrera is being dangled. Why else would they suddenly call him up from AA for the month of July? There was no advance chatter about him at all.

As for the future closer, my money is on AJ Minter, who just this past week gave up his first Earned Run as a professional.

Minter is a 6′, 210 lb. LHP that the Braves drafted in last year’s 2nd round out of Texas A&M, where he was their closer. He was coming off TJ surgery when he was drafted, but he’s recovered well and his early results have been amazing. He didn’t pitch in games last year while finishing his rehab. This year he pitched 5 games at low-A Rome before moving up to A+ Carolina. He pitched in 8 games there before being promoted to AA Mississippi. He has made 2 appearances there, giving up his first ER just a few days ago. In 18.2 total IP, he’s notched 21 K’s against just 5 BB’s. From what I’ve read, the team feels that Minter would probably already be major league ready if not for the injury. And while I don’t expect to see him in 2016, I’ll be surprised if he’s not given every chance to make the team in 2017. With a plus fastball (95-97 mph), a cutter, a curve, and a changeup, he has the weapons to make hitters swing and miss.

Today should prove to be a very slow news day as the All-Star break commences.

Tomorrow will be filled with tripe about the “Mid-Summer Classic, otherwise known as an overhyped exhibition game. It used to be kinda fun to see the AL players, but with the communistic compulsory inter-league scheduling, there is no longer any intrigue about the “other” league. Might as well just break the teams into geographical regions and move on. But I digress…

We’ll also be force fed the highlights of the Home Run Derby, where a handful of attention starved players will alter their swings while trying to yank fat pitches from some coach or relative over the fences in Petco Park, and then go into deep slumps upon their return to real games next week. I think I can probably find some rerun of Flea Market Flip to watch instead. Or Top Gear. Wish somebody would air the old Hee Haw shows. Roy Clark was an amazing musician back then. He could play anything with a string. Probably could even make dental floss sound good. Again, I’ve veered a bit of the path…

By Thursday we’ll have at our disposal a plethora of “first half analyses” to chew on. Not sure I want to look back at too much of the Braves first half. Kinda ugly at times. I prefer to look forward.

And to that end, I expect to hear some nice new trade rumors by Friday, after the ASB where all the FOT’s have gotten together over high priced beverages with foreign names and have tossed around player names like jugglers’ clubs, laying the foundation for some more serious phone conversations next week when they are more sober.

Nothing quite like the All-Star Break, is there?

Can a farm club be too productive???? This is getting old… from mlbtr

Cubs outfield prospect Eloy Jimenez is getting trade attention but the Cubs aren’t eager to part with the talented 19-year-old, CSN Chicago’s David Kaplan tweets. Jimenez signed with the Cubs during their spending spree in the 2013-14 international signing market, inking a deal with a hefty $2.8MM bonus that reflected his status as the most well-regarded prospect of that 2013-14 class. Jimenez is enjoying a breakout year at A-level ball, hitting .332/.372/.527 with 10 homers over 336 plate appearances. He also was one of the stars of today’s MLB Futures Game, going 2-for-3 with a homer and a spectacular catch in the outfield. Despite Jimenez’s promise, the Cubs’ minor league depth meant that he ranked only ninth (Baseball America) and 10th (MLB.com) in preseason rankings of the top 10 prospects in Chicago’s system. The Cubs have such depth that they could explore moving Jimenez or other top prospects in midseason trades and still have one of the game’s best farm systems

Theo sure knows how to build up a farm system, eh? thing is, why did he sign JHey? I guess he was thinking in Chi-town, in that bandbox, he would hit 25-30 HR’s drive in 90 or so….but they truly have….too many hitting prospects…perhaps they thought a few would flame out…what’s so weird is they really, truly don’t seem to want to trade any of them…there is no DH last time I looked in the NL. (Maybe he knows something we don’t?) Even if they let their CF’er go (man, getting old, had to look up his name, Dexter Fowler )after this season. So, next year they will have Jorge Soler, Albert Almora Jr, Kyle Schwarber for 2 positions Eloy Jimenez is only 19, but looks like the kind of guy that could be ready next year or 2018. Anthony Rizzo plays Schwarber’s most likely position, but he ain’t goin’ anywhere. And apparently there are many more…I don’t know a whole heck of a lot about their farm club except from what I read on mlbtr and on tv…whats funny is the braves sure sound like a team that would trade from their strength of pitching…seems like a great match up, perhaps this off season if the cubs starting pitching doesn’t get them to the W.S????

I still think that if Julio gets traded, the Rangers may be the best match, or at least a team that would consider trading prospects…and their starting pitching has been TERRIBLE of late…

Reports are pretty consistent that the Braves aren’t trading Julio unless they get a deal that exceeds what they got for Shelby Miller. But I’ll tell ya…

There aren’t any major bats coming from our own pipeline anytime soon aside from Dansby/Ozzie, and neither of those guys are gonna be 30/100 type guys.

If you can get a legit power bat in a deal for Julio, you have to do it. If you can pair Julio and Viz, or Julio and Cabrera and get legit offense, you have to do it.

Otherwise, you better hope you have a heckuva salesman working your FA efforts.

Why did they sign Heyward? Hype…. He’s not a bad player, not worth the money in my opinion, but it’s not my money so they will figure it out. With all those prospects. they will get what they need. After all, they are “prospects”. I have seen a lot of kids do well until the league figures them out and with video, they get figured out a lot faster these days.

I take all minor league stats with a grain of salt, after all, they are facing minor leaguers.

Minter eh? Will keep my eyes peeled…

Anyone remember when Olivera was the next sliced bread? Was supposed to be major league ready third baseman. I think the Braves pretty much traded even up when all is said and done. They sold a white elephant and got one in return. Hector will be playing in somebodies penal league before all is said and done. Maybe the Mets could use him? They can always use another hotdog in New York.

It sure is nice to see Nick Markakis break out the lumber this past weekend. I don’t think anyone expected it, I sure didn’t. Jace Peterson is trying to make it difficult for the Braves to bench him. Another guy who got the message after spending some time in Gwinnett.

Inciarte almost made the play of the year. That said, he didn’t make it so it will be forgotten. I am thinking some guys need to tighten up their gloves. Too many balls slipping out the end of the webbing.

Yep, DirecTV… never at a loss for something to watch. If not live, on demand which is better because you only get about a 30 second interruption for commercials.

Putting off mowing my lawn. Guess I should get to it.

You absolutely cannot blame the braves for wanting to equal or top the Shelby Miller trade…it’s not gonna happen, but you have to try to get the most, ask for something ridiculous, have the phone slammed in your ear (can you even do that with a cell phone?) and as we get closer to Aug 1st, the Red Sox or Rangers can say….well, how about if we traded to you X and Y, just not X Y and Z?
I still think they should trade Julio cuz there really isn’t anyone else they can trade for a bat,(and if he got hurt, he won’t be tradable for a year or two…heck, remember how great Jair Jurrgens was for a few years?) and like V said, have to be a real salesman to get someone to come here before the braves at least have a .500 season…
plus, I am not impressed with most of the OF’ers available for next year, and….we have really had some bad luck with Free Agents…well, and hitters we traded for to…

Yes Ber, amazing what you can do with “juiced” balls and corked bats….

When they let it slip that they were using “special balls” a couple of years ago, I lost interest because I thought they were rigging the game.

I also remember Ryan Howard never recovering from winning the HR Derby. What I am glad of is a lot of guys who really need it will get some time off, unfortunately, some that don’t will totally forget how to hit over a four day period. Will we be able to tell the difference?

Agree on Julio, get what you can while you can Coppy… Don’t have to give him away, just get a little more than he is worth. There are teams who have guys who are blocked, the Braves don’t have that problem. Okay, maybe first base but everything else is wide open.

Not sure if Chris Berman was still “calling” the HR Derby last night because I stayed far away, but I think Berman is probably the main reason for my aversion. I wish that guy would go “back back back back” to his home and stay there.

In a new Q&A published today, Coppy sat down with ajc hack Mark Bradley and answered some questions. I won’t go into the stuff that is more or less repeating older answers, but I did find a couple of items interesting.

#1, “Brian [Snitker] is a viable [managerial] candidate. However, as we made clear from the day we made the change, we will also look outside the organization.” Good for Snit.

#2, “It’s great the Cubs built around bats, but that’s what was available to them in the draft. There was no Kris Bryant or Kyle Schwarber in the draft this year. It’s also worth noting that all those bats the Cubs had still got beat (in the NLCS) by a Mets team built around pitching.” That’s a good point.

#3, “No. We aren’t trading Julio.” Uh… not much room for interpretation there. It’s gonna be hard to walk that statement back when a deal goes down.

An observation from watching many years of baseball. Good pitching does beat good hitting but not every pitcher is capable of good pitching 100% of the time.

A team needs at least three really good hitters to be considered a contender. You can shut down a hitter or two but it is really hard to shut down every good batter on a given day.

Many regular seasons records are padded against #4 & #5 pitchers and weak bullpens. That is the difference when playing post season games where so much time is given between starts that having two front line starters can win it all for you.

So, like an old fellow once told me when I mentioned selling my wife’s Trans Am. A lot of folks will want to buy it but most won’t want to pay the price you ask nor is it really worth. All hope you will be on the verge of bankruptcy so they can steal it.

So, I’m willing to trade Julio but I do see where the Braves have to sell low. The die is cast for this season and next season has the draw of a new stadium. 2018 is the realistic target for the Braves to make it back to the upper echelons of baseball royalty.

Gloomy Gus Berigan will translate, read between the lines to figure out what Coppy really meant 😉

#1, “Brian [Snitker] is a viable [managerial] candidate. However, as we made clear from the day we made the change, we will also look outside the organization.” What he really means is he’s too old , Coppy wants some young , controllable sabermetrician(SP? A real, made up word?) that will be all about defensive shifts , VORP, and other super important stuff that has made baseball so much better than it used to be….

#2, “It’s great the Cubs built around bats, but that’s what was available to them in the draft. There was no Kris Bryant or Kyle Schwarber in the draft this year. It’s also worth noting that all those bats the Cubs had still got beat (in the NLCS) by a Mets team built around pitching.” It is a good point, the Cubs really, really got lucky with some of those pics…Also, the braves in 1998 had
    Maddux 18 9 2.22
    Glavine 20 6 2.47
    Neagle* 16 11 3.55
    Millwood17 8 4.08 ( I guess he was the 5th starter????)
    Smoltz 17 3 2.90.
That has to be arguably the best overall rotation the braves ever had, right? Still lost to the Padres, a team with a much weaker offense and rotation, 4-2 for the NL Championship

#3, “No. We aren’t trading Julio.” Uh… not much room for interpretation there. It’s gonna be hard to walk that statement back when a deal goes down.

Oh V, V, V, what year do you think it is? 1986? (can’t say 1996 cuz slick Willy was already getting away with murder by then) The worst candidate in the world (and the person somehow leading in the polls) was proven to be a criminal, then given a free pass by the supposed straight shooter of the FBI…
a GM on the worst team in baseball (from a statistical point of view) Can say something like this, (Didn’t he say they weren’t gonna trade Kimbrel either?)then say, we were just overwhelmed by the offer the Dodgers made to us, everyone is really going to like the next can’t miss pitching prospect we are getting for Julio!!!! 😛

I always love it when the pundits talk about how the Braves don’t need a starter like Julio or a how a closer is really a luxury for team which is not going anywhere. Well, maybe not this year but have a young, controllable arm who is not overpriced is a real asset to have in the coming seasons.

Like so many folks have said to me, Gil, why do you have so many cars, you could save a lot of money selling some. Well, last I checked, I have not missed any meals nor any payments to creditors. Maybe I just like having them around, gives me something to waste money on….

Baseball owners are like that. They don’t need a team, they just want one. Now, it is nice to win a World Championship but let’s be truthful, how many owners are really remembered? Steinbrenner maybe, but I could not name the current owner of the Giants or Astros or Orioles or Tampa Bay. Still, I remember Mickey Mantle but I don’t know who owned the team. CBS?

Nope, it’s the players and the managers who gain the glory. Maybe a GM who has success but it is the GMs who have an owner with deep pockets who have the most success. Let’s not fool ourselves. Big payrolls win more often than small payrolls. Not everytime but more than 70% I would venture.

Yes, Ber. And I wish I had missed on that one. Of all the positions on the field, catcher is the one spot that we don’t have an answer for. Prior to Ryan Lavarnway being released in mid-May (a move that DOB says was partly motivated by the team wanting to give him an opportunity to catch on to another organization), I would not have been so anxious about it. Lavarnway did a decent job last season for the team… at least as a receiver.

But I know nothing about Anthony Recker other than what I’ve seen at a couple of AAA games. I will say this much… the dude is a physical specimen. And he can hit it hard. But can he do it at the major league level?

In tiny bits of seasons from 2011-2015 with the A’s, Cubs, and Mets, he sports a less than exciting .185/.260/.334 slash line. His numbers at AAA this year are a little better at .244/.348/.421. And that includes 8 HR’s.

And he’s the best option we have. Don’t get me started on Blake Lalli. Ugh.

Well, I imagine this means that AJP will step back into the fray to make the lion’s share of starts. That would be the same AJP that has regressed to an underwhelming .205/.227/.250 slash line. Don’t miss the .227 slugging percentage. Crikey!!

And given his difficulties actually catching the ball this season, I think I’d just as soon give Recker a shot.

And for informational purposes only, the fireplug, 5’9″ 225 lb. AA catcher Willians Astudillo is slashing .273/.295/.342 with only 8 K’s in 244 PA’s. He’s also thrown out 19 of 56 would be base stealers. T-Flow has thrown out just 2 all season. Just sayin’.

Damn! I hate being right sometimes….

Ber, HBO and CinaMax is free on DirectV this week end. Check out any movies you want to record.

Also the Baseball package is free for a week. Just in case you want to check out some of the other teams. You will only get the local feeds for the Braves. Just saying… The only reason I have it is it is the only way I can follow the Braves.

A J is simple being stymied by Father Time. Bat speed slows down plus he has been hitting into the shift a lot this season. Catching is a physically draining position to begin with, add Atlanta heat and humidity, whew…

Not all of the stolen bases are on the receiving corp, the young Atlanta pitchers have not yet learned the art of holding runners. So many little things besides just making pitches go into it.

Yet, it still blows for Tyler to go down at this point. He was having a good season and Julio was responding well to him as a batterymate.

I didn’t specifically call out a bone break by name, but I was patently distrustful of it being characterized as a “strain”. Not something you hear associated with the hand, typically. And noting that the initial cause of the injury was being hit by a pitch… well, it wasn’t hard to connect the dots, ya know?

As for me, I’d like to see Coppy take this development, and allow it to influence the next move in the rebuild. He’s been on record as stating that catcher is one position that must be addressed from outside the organization.

Well, go ahead. Take some of the “currency” and go after the catcher you want behind the plate for the next 3-4 years. We as fans would appreciate another step forward in the process.

Name to pay attention to: Derek Norris of SD. The Fathers have an up and comer behind the plate (not Bethancourt) and would part with Norris for a prospect or 2. He’s a good receiver with a good bat, although 2016 has not been his best season. Buy low and bring him in.

Just for grins and giggles, let’s just do a blockbuster deal and go after C Jonathan Lucroy and RF Ryan Braun from MIL. It’d cost us a ton, but we’d immediately be a better team, and with the arrival of The Dansby/Ozzie Show in 2017, we’d immediately become contenders.

You’d have to give up Ender Inciarte, Tyrell Jenkins, and wealth of prospects, including a couple of the top pitchers, maybe Max Fried and Sean Newcomb, and one of the young catchers Lucas Herbert or Brett Cumberland.

Man it’d be a haul, and probably have a long term effect. But you’d field a competitive team in 2017.

    1- Mallex Smith, CF (L)
    2- Dansby Swanson, SS (R)
    3- Freddie Freeman, 1B (L)
    4- Ryan Braun, RF (R)
    5- Jonathan Lucroy, C (R)
    6- Nick Markakis, LF (L)
    7- Rio Ruiz/Adonis Garcia, 3B (L/R)
    8- Ozzie Albies, 2B (S)

I could live with that. You would immediately solve your catching needs as well as your power shortage.

And here’s something for you to chew on…

There are some rumblings (apologies to ESPN’s Jayson Stark) out there that the Braves could be both sellers and buyers at the deadline. I’ve read in a couple of places that the team will certainly be looking to shed their short term vets – Francoeur, Markakis, Aybar, Beckham, AJP, Jim Johnson – but at the same time might be willing to deal from their minor league wealth for young controllable starting pitching. The 2 names being mentioned are Sonny Gray (Athletics) or Chris Archer (Rays). Those reports say that conversations have already taken place. Either one would cost a ton, but would be a major upgrade to the rotation, especially if the team is serious about keeping Julio.

Imagine a rotation that starts with Gray, Julio, Folty, Wisler… and the rookie of the moment.

Naturally, that doesn’t help anyone actually score a run.

But I’d love to have a dominant top of the rotation again. It’s been a while.

RHP Sonny Gray, 26, in his 4th season. Career ERA 3.23, WHIP 1.186. He’s their #1, and would be our #1. First year arb eligible in 2017. FA in 2020.

RHP Chris Archer, 27, in his 5th season. Career ERA 3.55, WHIP 1.229. As with Gray, he’s their #1, and would be our #1. Signed through 2019 with team options for 2020 and 2021.

So why would they be on the trading block? Both the A’s and Rays build their small market teams by trading top performers for top prospects before said top performers become too expensive. The clock is running out on Gray and Archer.

For the record, I prefer Gray, but I’ll take either one.

At 9:43pm CT, MLBTR published an analysis of the trade market for catchers. Under “Long-Term Options”, they posted the following:

Derek Norris: His overall numbers don’t look great thanks to a disastrous month of April, but Norris is hitting .250/.321/.500 with 11 homers over his past 190 plate appearances. I might consider him the likeliest player in all of baseball to get traded, as the Padres need to clear room for Austin Hedges.

Cutting edge stuff here on the ol’ B&S.

At any rate, I still think he’s a great fit here, and believe that Viz + mid-level pitching prospect would get it done.

Before 2017 comes around, the Braves must address 3 positions: power hitting OF, 3B and catcher. IMO, the team will address OF via FA, and the other positions via trade. Might as well get the ball rolling now with catcher, right? Why wait until the offseason when the conversation gets more crowded?

Slow news day, but there is some minor league news of note:

RHP Rob Whalen, the other pitcher we got last year in the KJ and Juan Uribe trade (along with John Gant), has been promoted to AAA. He’s been arguably the best pitcher in the Braves system this season earning 7 W’s with a 2.49 ERA in 18 starts for the M-Braves. He also leads the Southern League with 94 strikeouts. (For the record, Braves lefty Sean Newcomb is 2nd with 92.)

From the things I’ve read over the last week or so, many feel Whalen could be alot closer to major league ready than expected. I suppose that’s the reason for the promotion, though… right?

On the other side of the coin, LHP Manny Banuelos has been demoted to AA. The lefty has NOT been very impressive in his attempt to regain his top prospect status following a spate of injuries. Hopefully he can get things straightened out before next spring.

    Scouting report on Rob Whalen:

Whalen has one easily above-average pitch in his curveball, a plus breaking ball that misses bats. His fastball is average, thrown in the 91-92 mph range, but he sinks it for groundball outs and a deceptive delivery makes it tougher for hitters to pick up. The right-hander will mix in a slider, which sometimes blends in with his curve a bit too much, and he has a usable changeup, though it’s his fourth pitch. He’s around the strike zone with all of his pitches.*

Whalen has a bulldog mentality on the mound, and he had that approach during the offseason as he rehabbed from knee surgery. That should allow him to get back on track towards developing into a solid No. 4 type starter, with the upper levels of the Minors a good test for his deception, feel for pitching and command.

So, with the Mets suddenly experiencing a dearth of starting pitchers, The Braves have absconded with two guys who have potentially filled the gaps for 1/2 season of Uribe and Kelly Johnson. You just never now do you?

I love it, average fastball at 91 to 92… I remember when that was closer stuff. Of course a lot of pitchers tried to go nine innings on a regular bases. I think the difference is it a 91-92 with max effort or an easy 91-92 that moves.

We have seen how fast a good ML hitter can turn around a 102 mph fastball that is laser straight. Now, if we could just get some assurances that the umpires will call those breaking balls a strike when they are in the zone. Sometimes a pitcher is so deceptive that the ump can’t see them either. It’s how catchers cheat by framing pitches…. Well, not exactly cheat but they do steal calls…

Funny how the Braves staff has shaped up with a bunch of guys no one has heard of (Herrell, Gant) etal while the first round draft picks continue to find their way. The other night, Paul Byrd made the statement that how a pitcher does not really mature until he is around 31 years old. I guess that is why you need so many because they are always falling by the wayside before they mature. I think it’s because pitchers today overstress their arms trying to go max effort on every pitch.

Perhaps it was unfair to rely so much on the hype about ManBam. I guess we as Braves fans needed something to hold onto while the team was adrift.

I also think it is why Julio is such a valuable commodity right now. At only 25/26 he is a seasoned veteran who has finally learned to get his emotions under control and just throw what the catcher calls for. Greg Maddux was the cerebral guy but he had to be. Julio just needs to throw, in fact, all the young pitchers on the staff need to stop trying to out think the hitter and just throw what A.J or Tyler puts down. Makes everyone’s job easier.

I am glad Bud Norris got straightened out. More power to him. I hope he continues to pitch well for the Dodgers. Now, if some of these young guys like Folty and Wisler can just get some run support to help boost their confidence plus take some of pressure off of them thinking they need to hurl a shutout everytime they take the mound I think we can have a very enjoyable and productive second half.

    Bowman via Twitter:

With Flowers possibly out until Sept., the Braves may attempt to find a catcher. For now, it looks like Recker and A.J. will share the role.

The Braves shied away from Lucroy this past winter because of a concussion. But he may now pop back on the radar.

With all the concussions, I am really surprised more catchers haven’t beat a path to Tyler Flower’s door to inquire about his shock absorbing mask. Oh well, they all think they are bullet proof, until they aren’t…

The sad thing about Flowers was that after a pretty slow start, he was really beginning to find his stride. Of course the level of talent in the opposing pitchers has not been as great as it was early in the season.

Lucroy is a top level talent and it will take top level talent to pry him away from the Brewers. I’m sure the Braves have been scouring the bushes looking for someone who is big league ready but just like every other position, you either bring your glove, your arm or your bat to the game, rarely all three.

Of course these days it seems most fans only care about the bat… I’m surprised that MLB hasn’t instituted a shootout where after nine innings and the game is tied, they just institute a home run derby format where each side gets ten swings. It would shorten the game and save a lot of bullpens. Just saying…

The Braves signed veteran RHSP Roberto Hernandez to a minor league deal today, and he has been assigned to AA Gwinnett. Hernandez, 35, is 70-98 with a 4.58 ERA in 268 career MLB games (217 starts) with CLE, TB, PHI, LAD and HOU.

This would be the Roberto Hernandez that came into the league under the assumed name Fausto Carmona. He was pitching for the Jays’ AAA team before being release on July 3.

Personally, I doubt we’ll ever see HO in an Atlanta uni again. He does have minor league options available, and I imagine the Braves will use them if they don’t simply release him altogether. With the organization fighting an uphill PR battle already, they can’t afford this stain back in the Ted, or especially SunTrust Park. (The Spark? The Bank? We’ll have to work on that one.)

Speaking of catchers, does anyone else think Anthony Recker looks like Javy Lopez? Strong resemblance with his helmet on…

Recker looked good behind the late yesterday. Maybe not the big bat like a LuCroy or a Posey nor a defensive gem like any of the Molina brothers but a solid looking guy. Rare to have a five tool player behind the dish. Come to think of it, pretty rare too have a guy with more than one tool…

I think the Rockies have a really good looking team. There is some real talent there. That said, if I were building a team in Denver, I would want a bevy of fleet footed Bambies in the outfield who could throw… I would look somewhere else for power besides the corner outfield spots.

I don’t think I have ever seen so many wild pitches throw over a series, much less so many that figured into the scoring of both teams so prominently. I get it, it’s tough trying to pick up that 7-10 split but constantly rolling gutter balls ain’t cutting it for me.

So here is the key for me as far as Atlanta pitching. Understanding that you do not have to strike out the side every time you pitch unless maybe you are a closer. Trying to be too fine and resorting to “trickery” will only get you so far because sometimes a pitch is so good, it also fools the umpire.

Wasting a pitch does not mean you have to hit the bull. A least throw it close enough so that the batter thinks it might be a strike, the umpire might think so too.

If you don’t have enough stuff to get a hitter to at least pop up or ground out aside from a strike out, you should be revising your resume’ anyhow because you clearly are not talented enough to pitch in the majors.

Lastly, there is absolutely no defensive alignment available to defend against a walk. I know, some walks are strategic, I can live with that but getting hitter down 0-2 and then walking him is maddening. Especially when every ensuing pitch is missing the plate by at least 6 inches or more. AAAAAUUGGGHHHH!!!!

    Jeff Passan, Yahoo! Sports:

Julio Teheran is going to be made available by the Atlanta Braves. The executives’ thinking: Why wouldn’t he be? Teheran is pitching like a good No. 2 … a year after he better resembled a middling No. 4. His contract is fine, but it’s not exactly cheap: $26.3 million for three guaranteed years, plus a $12 million club option.

If the best argument the Braves can come up with for keeping Teheran is they wants to open their new stadium with him on the mound, they should trade him in the next two weeks. Teams in the midst of total teardowns simply cannot be concerned with optics. The truth is, winning brings back the fans that losing bleeds. The Astros’ attendance is up to 28,000 after a nadir of just under 20,000. Kansas City once had trouble drawing 10,000 to Kauffman Stadium. Today, it regularly exceeds 30,000.

All the blather about opening day is lip service, and no executive is buying it. “I can get Teheran,” said one GM looking for pitching. “It’s just going to cost too much right now.” And that may as well go for the rest of the market right now.

    More Passan…

Texas wants controllable pitching… Sources familiar with the talks believe they are willing to give up Joey Gallo.

Gallo, 22, is described as arguably the most powerful prospect in all of Minor League Baseball but doesn’t have a clear long-term fit on the Rangers’ roster now that Adrian Beltre has been extended, according to Steve Adams of MLBTR.

BTW, he’s a 3B/LF. I think we could find a place for him to play.

Here is the scouting report for the Rangers’ #1 prospect: Gallo’s off-the-charts raw power earned him a $2.25 million bonus as the 39th overall selection in the 2012 Draft, and it has caused jaws to drop since he entered pro ball. He set a Rookie-level Arizona League record with 18 homers in 43 games in his pro debut, topped the Minors with 40 long balls in 2013, then ranked second with 42 in 2014. Though Gallo looked overmatched during his introduction to the big leagues last summer, he still went deep six times in 36 games, including a 439-foot blast off Clayton Kershaw.

Gallo’s 6-foot-5 frame gives him tremendous strength and leverage, which combine with his electric bat speed and extremely aggressive approach to produce tape-measure shot after tape-measure shot. In his first four years as a pro, he averaged 51 homers per 162 games — as well as 242 strikeouts. Gallo’s long left-handed swing and swing-for-the-fences mentality will preclude him from hitting for average, but he does exhibit some patience and will draw walks because pitchers are loathe to challenge him.

The question I pose is this: would you trade Julio to get him?

    What say ye?

  152. 158 Gil in Mechanicsville July 18, 2016 at 1:41 pm

Yes, I would, but only with another lower level prospect or two thrown in. Like the aforementioned GM you alluded to, Julio can be had, he just won’t be cheap. No matter how good a prospect a player is, he is still a prospect. See Hector Olivera… He was supposed to be the next “sliced bread”

Reminds me of the old adage about no matter how hot that girl that has caught your eye, there is some guy somewhere who is tired of putting up with her crap…

Now, back to Gallo: he has tremendous potential but despite what the Sabermetricians say, strike-outs do matter. Now, if you give me a guy who hits around .280 with power, I’d take that. but, I would never trade a front line pitcher who is so cheap and under long term control straight up for just one guy.

Of course, I wouldn’t even think twice about it…in this day and age, a 35-40 HR guy is worth more than a once a 5 day starter, no matter how good they are (short of a Kershaw) As we see the Cubs and Red Sox will not, at least at this time consider trading ANY of their top hitting prospects….and you never know about Julio, but like I said the other day, remember Jair Jurrjens .30 years old and sadly out of baseball since last year….

    Rumor mill is churning…

A guy on radio suggests that if the Rangers want Julio, it’s really gonna cost them, and cost them big.

    Names he’s thrown out:

The aforementioned Joey Gallo, who is the Rangers’ #1 prospect, and is major league ready.

Their #2 prospect, OF Lewis Brinson. He’s a 20/20 kinda guy that would be our LF in 2017… maybe even in 2016.

Their #3 prospect RHP Dillon Tate. He’s a starter with a “lively 92-98 mph fastball and a sharp 85-89 mph slider.” He is also developing a changeup that “shows flashes of becoming a solid third pitch.” He’s a hard thrower that would be a welcome addition to either the rotation or bullpen. He’s probably still a year away.

Now, that sounds like too much to ask for to me, but why not? After all… Julio is our ace.

I still believe we’ll trade Julio for a hitter. No better evidence than Sunday, when he scattered 3 hits and 5 K’s over 7 very strong innings, and left the game tied at 0-0. I don’t care how well a guy pitches, you can’t win if you can’t score.

I was thinkin’ (Hey I do that sometimes) on the other hand…you don’t want to be too greedy if it makes you miss a deal….Since Joey Gallo looks to be the next Mike Schmidt…do you want to risk missing out on him? Reason I say that is cuz the Red Sox and Cubs do NOT want to trade….well, any hitting prospects, even though clearly…they don’t need them right now…they are already loaded for bear…yet, they still won’t part with them…
That’s what makes a GM’s job so tough…you keep Julio, great…except…no left fielder, no 3rd baseman. Yeah, get a free agent. Someone you know, that will demand 20+ million a year, and is over 33 years of age next year….who is not going to want to come to ATL as his first choice…so you may lose getting any real decent bat…and then what?
or you can trade for a 22 y.o. with crazy power…I just don’t want to see the Rangers trade him to the Rays for a lesser package…again…tough to be a GM, right? Rangers may be saying this to get the braves to back down, or, sensing the braves won’t, are trying to get Archer from the Rays….
from yesterday, and I think from Passan’s same story V mentioned yesterday as well….

A match between the Rangers and Rays centering around controllable pitching is readily apparent, and some sources have expressed to Passan that they believe the Rangers are willing to part with prized slugger Joey Gallo in order to land a long-term rotation piece. Gallo, of course, is arguably the most powerful prospect in all of Minor League Baseball but doesn’t have a clear long-term fit on the Rangers’ roster now that Adrian Beltre has been extended. He could theoretically be shifted across the diamond to first base or transition to the outfield, though, if the Rangers do hold onto him, so it’s not as though he has nowhere to play on the club in the near future.

Dansby Swanson drove in 4 runs last night, including a 1st inning 2-run HR. He said, “Just one of those days, I guess There were a couple of pitches that I saw well and I was able to put a good swing on it.” He’s slashing .292/.375/.479 in July after slumping through much of June. Still, for the season, he’s at .287/.373/.454 w/ 8 HR’s and 45 RBI.

His counterpart Ozzie Albies was 2-5 scoring 2 runs as leadoff batter. His season slash line is .301/.369/.421 w/ 15 SB’s and 59 runs scored.

I’ll be surprised if the pair isn’t moved up to AAA somewhere around the 1st of August.

Funny how your mind can wander when left with a lot of time on your hands. All the speculation about the Braves and Joey Gallo for Julio Teheran made me think back to when the Braves traded Jermaine Dye to the Royals back in 1997. Gallo to me is the same type of player. Probably higher ceiling but still, I thought it was one of the Braves poorer trades.

I guess with fewer PEDs and corked bats, offense is again a premium. I cannot trust the inflated numbers put up in the 80s, 90s OOs any longer to just talent. The drop off is just too severe to be attributed to anything else. A shame really, but back to Gallo. The Rangers are going to trade this kid and I am sure they would love for the Braves to get in a bidding war with Tampa Bay for this kid’s services. That said, I also think the Braves and the Red Sox are still in the final stages of trying to hammer out a deal.

I think they are just trying to argue whether or not the floor mats are going to get thrown into the deal.

I think you are right Vee, everyone is waiting for the first domino to fall. It is always a risky move when you go all in. Someone always seems to have pocket aces when you don’t expect it.

Funny, I really thought Vizcaino had turned the corner when he returned to the Braves for LaStella. Unfortunately, he has forgotten how to find the strike zone again with any consistency. The same problem he had before he was shipped off to Chicago by Frank Wren.

My question is this, is it him or the coaching or the catching? Is he trying to be too fine (a problem a lot of Atlanta pitchers appear to have)?

One more comment about Matt Wisler and I’ll move on for another week. He really had problems with his breaking ball last night. The homeruns he gave up would have been out of Yellowstone Park. No cheapies, they were hammered. They not only went far, they went quickly. Okay, a young pitcher who is going to have to take his lumps, I get it. You just don’t want his confidence to be shattered by it like young Aaron Blair’s apparently has.

AJ Minter is a LHP out of Texas A&M. He was chosen by ATL in the 2nd round of the 2015 draft (75th overall). He was a potential 1st round pick before he had Tommy John surgery in March 2015. He features a mid-90’s fastball that he can spot on both sides of the plate and a cutter/slider.

Minter obviously was not able to pitch in 2015, but was ready for the beginning of this season where he started at low A Rome. In 5 appearances (6.1 IP) there he yielded 0 runs, 2 hits and a .091 AVG against, while striking out 6.

Then he was promoted to A+ Carolina where in 8 appearances (9.1 IP) he yielded 0 runs, 3 hits and a .100 AVG against, while striking out 10.

From there he was promoted to his current team, AA Mississippi, where in 5 appearances (5.2 IP) he has yielded 1 run, 1 hit and a .050 AVG against, while striking out 14.

Combined, for 2016 he’s pitched 21.2 innings, yielding 1 run (ERA 0.42), 6 hits and a .083 AVG against, while striking out 30.

Y’all, those numbers are just silly. That’s video game stats.

There comes a point when a player no longer has anything to prove in the minor leagues but for a verity of reasons, he remains in the bushes. I gues my question is does the organization see him long term as a reliever or are they just working him back slowly as a result of the TJ surgery?

I would suspect they do not feel any need to rush him to the big leagues this season thus maintain control as they do not have to start the clock on him. That said, I don’t know what kind of bonus money he signed for (too lazy to look it up) but I am pretty sure he is not starving, just tired of bus rides and small ball parks.

They view him as a closer, which was his role at Texas A&M.

I’ll be honest, I thought Jenkins would collapse after giving up the two run home early. The umpire was not giving him anything close or borderline, even those that “Foxtrax” were showing as strikes but he persevered. Nice to see. Having Gordon Beckham pick him up did not hurt.

And what of Freddie? Another terrible slump…

    And some “STUFF”

If any of you are interested in watching the Republican convention, I suggest you watch it on C-span. No talking heads trying to tell me what I just heard and them putting their spin on things. Just the speeches, all of them… Some of the better ones have been by folks who are otherwise unknown.

Funny, is someone famous because they are talented or because they have a better publicist? It’s a lot like watching a ball game and you don’t know who the players are, you have no preconceived notions. They make the plays or don’t.

Braves #1 pick in 2015, LHP Kolby Allard, has been promoted from Advanced Rookie league Danville to A- Rome. Also, Braves 1st rounder (#40 overall) from this year, LHP Joey Wentz, has been promoted from the Gulf Coast rookie team to Danville.

I knew that Wentz has not allowed a run in his brief pro career (4 games, 12 IP, 18 K’s), but I didn’t know that he did not yield a single earned run during his senior season of high school, nor his junior season (when he split time between pitching and 1B). You have to go back to the kid’s sophomore high school season since he’s allowed an earned run. That’s kinda crazy.

Well, most of their trade chips are blowing chunks right now. Viz had the skin thing and blew 3 saves. Jim Johnson has blown recent saves. Beckham has been ice cold since his return from the DL. Aybar is… Aybar.

There is only one player on the entire roster that will being back real major league talent, and we all know who that is.

I am beginning to think that Erick Aybar sits in his locker and dreams up new ways to give the opposing team runs.

And if Coppy doesn’t obtain this team hitting with his “currency”, we might as well just get used to the losing. No team ever won 0-0. When you can’t score runs in The Great American Smallpark, and you can’t score runs in Denver, you have serious issues.

The Royals are among the teams that have shown some interest in right fielder Nick Markakis… according to Bowman.

That’s all fine and good, and Markakis needs to be moved to open a spot for power in the OF (since neither Mallex nor Ender have much). But what’re they gonna get for him? And where is the power OF coming from?

Let me answer those questions: nothing of current major league talent, and nowhere unless Coppy realizes his only real trade chip.

In other words, a Markakis deal doesn’t improve the team for 2016 or 2017. So it’s a part of the supposedly finished tear-down, and not a part of the new build-up. And no one except Julio will brig back a hitter. Period.

If I sound frustrated, I am. To use an analogy from another sport, if a football running back runs 99 yards from his own end zone, only to take a knee at the 1-yard line, he still hasn’t scored. He’s done alot of great work, but he didn’t finish the play.

Well, there is only one player on the entire roster that will spark the rebuild with major league hitting talent, and that’s Julio Teheran. Oh, they can acquire complimentary pieces with Viz or with EOF or with Krol or with Beckham, etc. You get the idea. But they can’t get anything of real impact value without dealing Julio. And Coppy says he’s turned at least a dozen GM’s away.

OK fine. As long as it’s all GM rhetoric, then that’s fine. But if we go into August with Julio still throwing and nobody hitting. Then not only is 2016 in the tank, so is 2017.

If you only score 2-3 runs in a game in Colorado, and you are shut down by a guy with a 5+ ERA…you are right V, gotta do something…
I mentioned before, I do NOT blame Coppy for getting the absolute max they can get for Julio, but…if you tell teams over and over you are not really interested in trading him/or we need your top 2-3 prospects…
teams do look to other teams….Cubs flat out won’t trade anyone that is a top ten prospect…so forget them, but the Rangers are in freefall. Rotation in disarray. But, braves may have waited too long as Prince Fielder has sadly herniated another disc in his neck, and I think Choo went on the DL as well…. so They may end up bringing Joey Gallo up ….
But, the Rangers need rotation help and so does the Dodgers…Alex Wood has a 3.99 ERA in fairly limited work, but needs some elbow procedure that puts him on the shelf for 6-8 weeks. Kershaw had a herniated disc in his lower back, and hasn’t responded to rest so far…yet, they are 12-6 since he got hurt, and the Giants are doing their best braves impression and losing a ton after the break so they are in reach….
So come on Coppy! Rangers and Dodgers need an “impact” arm (I am groaning typing that) braves need a young impact bat….you really wanna tie up tens of millions for many years IF you can even get an over 33 outfielder that is a free agent????

I don’t know Vee, what’s the old saying? “Never let them see you sweat”

Trades can be a funny thing, I know Coppy knows he has one real trade chip, he is waiting for someone to raise the ante. When there is only one of something, it makes it a pretty valuable commodity.

Let’s look at the players and you get a sense of who will blink first. Boston? Chicago Cubs? Texas? All three need a front line pitcher and all three have major league talent available. When you want to buy a new car, it’s nice to know there is more than one dealer in town. It just comes down to who is willing to make the best deal.

Coppy knows this season is toast, getting crispier all the time as a matter of fact. He can afford to wait until the off season, Maybe the Cubs, Rangers or Red Sox cannot… Just my opine.

Ber, I agree but where would the Braves have been if they had traded Tom Glavine in 1990? I don’t know if a single bat will make the difference any more than a single pitcher for the Braves at this point. Unlike the Braves teams of the ’90s, there is more than one spot open on the Braves roster.

Deep in my gut, I still think they’ll trade Julio for the right price… and by the right price, I mean Joey Gallo and OF Lewis Brinson and a pitcher.

I mean Andrew Benentendi and Clay Bucholz and another prospect.

    I mean a haul.

And you know what? I think he might get it. He’s playing his cards very close to the vest and letting all the other pieces fall first, then coming in at the last minute with the only remaining impact arm. Several teams want pitchers, and there aren’t many available.

Especially if Julio is Julio again tonight in Denver, he might just seal his fate.

Coppy has a certain level of return in mind, and he’s determined to get it. I suppose it’s gonna be up to the buyers. It’s an intense game of poker and the stakes are getting higher the closer we get to the deadline.

“I have told about 12 different general managers we aren’t moving [Teheran],” Coppolella = poker bluff.

CL, I would just assume have the next generation of pitchers flail and fail this year, to get better next year….there are guys pitching well in AA, V can name the guys…one is the other pitcher we got from the Angels that was considered the lesser of the two…he had developed faster than the lefty who’s name escapes me. Bring him up!
A starter can only pitch every 5 days, 30 + times a year.
A Joey Gallo, even if he strikes out 180 times a year, if he hits 30 to 40 HR’s a year, plays good 3rd base (or Left) and hopefully cuts down on the strikeouts, (He’s only 22) He would help the team(and FF, etc) more than a very good starter that can’t win cuz the team has no offense… IMHO

Ber, Chipper was drafted in 1990, Javy in 1992

They did however have some guys coming along but they really sucked in 1990. Perhaps the biggest improvements came with signing Terry Pendleton and Sid Bream. The power came from them in 1991 and the addition of David Justice and Dion Sanders.

That said, the Braves do need to add some pop to their line up.

And yes Vee, we have pretty much established what the relationship of Julio and the Braves, we are just haggling over price now. Pretty much the same for anyone who has something they are not really in the market to sell, it’s how badly does someone else want it or need it? Like I said, a Texerian level haul. The question for the other GMs is how badly do you really need a front line pitcher?

Let me see if I can make the convoluted analogy in my head work…
I remember being 13-14 and painting a model car. A metal bodied mid 50’s 2 seater T-Bird. Painted it red. Should have used primer…but I didn’t But, somehow I did a fairly decent job with just a can of red paint. But, I could still see some of the galvinized metal showing thru near the bottom. So, I would on just 1 more coat of paint I told myself…wait, I can still see the metal a bit…1 more…then , a run in the paint. Had to sand it down, and start over…same thing happened, another run…sanded it again….then the paint was too think…never did finish that car. I used to taunt me, just the shell of the car, imperfect.
Anyway….Coppy got a king’s ransom for Shelby Miller, who was admittedly, one of the best pitchers in 2015, cheap, controllable…Proven…well, they thought. They were willing to give up a their last 2 #1 picks for him. Hey, you always get more picks, and who knows what those unproven guys will do. It will work out for the braves, down the road…right now? A wash…
But, not every trade will be like that. You still want to get every bit you can for your best “piece”, it can mean the difference of winning or being an also ran in 2018, 2019…But, If you keep holding out for perfection…you may end up worse than you started off. Or, at least no better…Wait too long, and….players get hurt. Other teams decide, hey, there are so few players available, and if the braves are asking for the sun and the moon, perhaps we can get at least the Sun…the White Sox are now talking about trading guys, and it sounds like Chris Sale and José Quintana may be out there. Well, guess what? Sale would be more interesting to AL teams than Julio. Why? More of a swing and miss guy…he also pitches in the AL, less of a risk of being a flop(hard to imagine him flopping, but it does happen with some NL guys going to AL, ). Both are relatively cheap, and just a hair older than Julio (27)
You never hear José Quintana’s name…at least I don’t. He’s never won more than 9 games a year, but he has pitched 200+ innings the last 3 years, and is well on his way to doing it again this year. 3.76 ERA rookie year, 3.51 or lower ever since. less than 9 mil thru 2019, and then a club option for 10 Mil for 2 years…and, he’s a lefty. Now there is competition for Julio. Now, Coppy won’t get as much. Now, in a way, it’s not fair for me to say Coppy waited too long, because a lot of teams wait til the last minute to decide…but, more teams have jumped on a player well before the deadline…How greedy do you want to be?
Granted, he can still trade him off season, but who knows if he will finish as strong as he started, or if he will get hurt or not. And, as V has pointed out, he is about it…who else can you trade? FF? Lose your best hitter to get another one in a trade? Does that make sense. He’s still plenty young.
I just hope that the braves aren’t just full of wishful thinking about his injury, and Julio can somehow start 1 more time…but Lat’s don’t usually allow that to happen. He may be lost for a month or more….man, what luck….

I guess what I find….irksome (Blog 1st?) about Coppy is the game playing. He’s the new kid on the block. Yeah, John Hart is advising him, no doubt…but is it just me, or would it make more sense to say to, the media, the fans, AND GM’s around the game…”We aren’t planning on trading Julio. We really like him a lot, he’s an elite starter…but….we still have a ways to go to get to where we need to be at…so while we are not actively trying to trade him, you never want to say never”
We know he’s not likely to fool other GM’s is he? they know the braves have no offense. Have a ton of pitching in the pipeline….Media , well being the media, no matter what branch, yeah, I guess you can fool them, at least a fair number of them…but the fans…it just seems to reek, to say we are not gonna trade player X, only to trade player X a little further down the road…guess I am just…disappointed. Yeah, Julio can still be traded in the off season…or you can keep him and…watch other teams win the division for the next 3-4 years :/

Trade deadline is one week away. Julio, who is seriously downplaying his lat strain, is scheduled to make a start this week on Thursday night at home against the Phils.

He has continued to work his regular workouts, including all his running and lifting, as well as his side sessions and long tossing. And he’s added additional stretching.

IMO, that’s a clear message to all potential suitors that his injury was not serious.

And here’s another thing… my opinion, of course.

When he was removed from his start last week, it was Aybar who called for the trainer, not Julio. Julio had reportedly felt the tightness earlier in the game, but it had subsided. He noticed it again when fielding the bunt. I believe that the team, Snit and Co., were being overly cautious, taking no chances that he’d compound the issue. I believe they are treating him very carefully as the deadline approaches. I believe they are protecting their commodity.

Julio maintains that he can make his regular start on Tuesday in MIN, but the team is absorbing the off day and pushing back his start to Thursday… at home. Again… by design. Don’t you want him in his best possible environment to make that key showcase start?

Yes, I’m being a bit of a conspiracist. But the pieces just fit, ya know?

Correction: Braves expect to hold Francoeur unless they receive strong offer. Earning $1M. Team values his leadership and makeup.

Had reported earlier in the day that Braves were “aggressively shopping” Francouer. Source says that is not the case.

Ha ha… as you know, losses this year don’t really bug me too much. I do hate to see lollygagging, but there’s no illusion that this is a very good team. It isn’t. At least the pitching is developing, even if it takes it’s occasional lumps. Nothing from Jenkins’ start yesterday changes my opinion of him. I still think he’ll be a solid starter in our rotation.

Heck, I still think Aaron Blair will get his stuff straightened out. (It’s all about pitch location with him.)

The only thing that I’m really gripping much about is whether or not the FOT’s will follow through with what they have indicated, which is to acquire major league hitters.

BTW- Speaking of pitching prospects getting their stuff together, have you seen what Lucas Sims has done since his return to AA? His last start went 7 1/3 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 4 K’s against a talented Cubs farm team that had rehabbing ML-ers Chris Coghlan and Jorge Soler. One more thing, then I’ll hang it up for a little while (I think)…

We definitely need hitting on this team, but is 3B something we’re desperate over?

Over his last 15 games, Adonis is slashing .373/.403/.576 w/ 2 HR’s and 6 2B’s. In his time with the ATL squad over parts of the last 2 seasons, he’s averaging .267/.296/.425 w/ 21 HR’s, 26 2B’s and 66 RBI over 162 games. Now that’s certainly not All Star numbers, but it’s also not as bad as we’re getting from some other positions that are supposed to be offensive positions? Right, Nick?

My point is simply this, we need offensively productive OF… period. We can get by with Adonis for the short term.

OK, so I’m back again briefly…

Given that the team has come out limping since the ASB, there’s nothing really to gain by keeping the current middle infield together.

The Braves are off on Aug. 1 and open a 3 game series at home against the Pirates on Aug. 2. If I’m in charge, Dansby and Ozzie run out of the dugout and take their positions as the game begins.

If I can’t trade Aybar by the deadline, I DFA him immediately after. And if I haven’t traded Beckham, he goes to the bench and Brandon Snyder goes back to AAA. I might even consider trading Jace Peterson if the return is right.

But there’s no real reason left to delay the future any longer. It’s time to take a step forward.

My lineup on Aug. 2nd vs. LHP Nelson Liriano:

    1- Ozzie Albies, 2B (S)
    2- Adonis Garcia, 3B (R)
    3- Freddie Freeman, 1B (L)
    4- Derek Norris, C (R)
    5- Nick Markakis, RF (L)
    6- Jeff Francoeur, LF (R)
    7- Ender Inciarte, CF (L)
    8- Dansby Swanson, SS (R)

I hope we can acquire a hitter for our OF, but I’m not optimistic. However, somewhere this week we need to trade for Norris. It’s a “buy low” deal on a catcher that is having a down year but has historically been very good. I want him. I think he’s a classic “change of scenery” kinda guy. I bet we can get him cheap. Hunter Cervenka straight up? Maybe…

    5- Andrew Benintendi, LF (L)
    6- Derek Norris, C (R)
    7- Jeff Francoeur, RF (R)
    8- Ender Inciarte, CF (L)

    3- Freddie Freeman, 1B (L)
    4- Adonis Garcia, 3B (R)

    3- Freddie Freeman, 1B (L)
    4- Yoenis Cespedes, RF (R)

I’m thinking the Braves are down to only having to eat a small part of Aybar’s contract now, I agree with dumping him even if they don’t promote the dynamic duo.

May as well let the kids get the rookie blues out of the way early.

The last Braves shortstop to be as disappointing as Aybar has to have been Pat Rockett.

    Aybar this year: .214/.277/.267. 12 E’s in 75 games.

Sadly, Bobby Cox thought Pat Rockett to be the next Ozzie Smith. To be fair, the infield at Fulton County Stadium was notoriously bad. Still, The Braves jettisoned as soon as the were able.

The best all around shortstop I can attest to for the Braves was Furcal. Walt Weiss was a great fielder but so was Rafael Belliard. Still, back in the day, offense was not looked for in a shortstop, like catchers, it was considered a skills position where defense was a bigger consideration. Then Cal Ripken came along.

Let’s be honest, the Braves have had oodles of base runners, just have not been able to get the big hit when they needed it.

Yup, because the lineup is not capable of stringing together 3 or 4 hits in a row, and there isn’t a power threat in the lineup that can bring them all in at once.

Yes, Alex was a smooth one. Walt Weiss was pretty slick too. Even Paul Janish could flash the leather. I guess that is why Aybar is so disappointing. The Braves have had some pretty stellar shortstops. I guess that is why in this era of some really great ones, the Braves stick out as really substandard.

So, I don’t think there is any doubt that Aybar is the ultimate short timer. The only question is how soon he cleans out his locker. I don’t honestly believe the Braves have any delusions about Aybar’s trade value at this point. Not exactly what they had in mind when they agreed to take him as part of the trade which saw Simba traded to LALA land. Perhaps he has Milky Cabrera syndrome. Doesn’t want to be here and plays like it.

I guess what I found odd, is that like B.J. Upton, there was no one smart as a shlub like me to you know, look at the players recent stats? I can see the logic of thinking he could play like he had in previous years, but a .249 BA with a .275 OBP in the second hand of last year should have gotten the braves to think, heck we could have someone from AAA do that…I guess the thought was, off year, he will rebound….but some player need to feel like they are playing for something…a chance to get to the playoffs. Sorta like a closer doesn’t often do well in a tie game, or when the team is behind…or when they come in in the 7th…

Maybe, it’s just guys from the Angels over 30? Remember Garret Anderson???? I didn’t…at least his name…had to look it up. I thought he was even worse than his numbers show. 13 HR’s 61 RBI’s .268 BA. I guess it was his Aybar-ish attitude? Both probably thought they would retire with the Angels.
Funny, if Garret Anderson had a few more good seasons, you could….almost make a case for the HOF. As it is, .293 BA and 1365 RBI’s is pretty good. in a tie for 87th place all time for RBI’s with Orlando Cepeda

Well, little offense to speak of (A former brave pitching well against the braves? Shocking!) but Lucas Harrell pitched a whale of a game…which is funny, I was about to say if he had another bad game, why do they keep running out a 31 year old? Well, perhaps they can trade him for something….good for him and the Braves…it’s just..well, we were lead to believe we had the #1 farm system in baseball (Something I really wonder about as I see teams like the Cubs and Red Sox and Astros, after seemingly bringing up 1/3 of their current teams in the past year or so, have so many hitting prospects in their system…Red Sox even have a pitcher that hits 105….Surely there are some guys ready or near ready to get into the rotation? I mean, why not suck like Glavine and Smoltz did this year, and then only suck for a few months next year, then start rounding into real, decent pitchers? Or have they just developed more slowly than expected?

But, the braves would be crazy not to trade him (either now, or during the offseason) and teams would be crazy not to at least kick the tires….and I bet he would never dream of cutting up the throwback Uni’s of any team he played for…

Here’s something to think about as we continue to clamor for Dansby and Ozzie to be brought up the big league team…

Neither of them are on our 40-man roster, and neither have to be yet to be protected from this winter’s Rule 5 draft. But the improved state of our system means there are some players that will need to be protected or we’ll lose them. Delaying their callup, and required placement on the 40-man roster, leaves 2 additional spots to protect other prospects.

I’m not saying this will happen, but from a procedural standpoint it makes sense. From a PR standpoint, maybe not so much. Quite honestly, I don’t think the team would let that block their promotion if they deem them ready. But it is something to think about.

Granted, there will be spots that open up when Lucas Harrell is traded and Erick Aybar is released. Same if something were to happen with Gordon Beckham. So spots will open up. But there will be some prospects that need to be protected. I need to do some deeper research to determine exactly who could be exposed this year. Maybe later.

Surely there are some guys ready or near ready to get into the rotation?

Well, the top talent is still in AA or below. Our top rated pitchers are:

    Sean Newcomb, AA
Kolby Allard, recently promoted to A-
    Touki Toussant, A-
    Max Fried, A-
    Lucas Sims, AA
Chris Ellis, recently promoted to AAA
    Ricardo Sanchez, A-
Max Povse, recently promoted to AA
Rob Whalen, recently promoted to AAA

Ellis has performed well recently after struggling in his first couple of appearances at AAA. But he still only has 27 IP there and is not on our 40-man roster. Whalen just got there, making 2 starts.

By the way, none of the aforementioned pitchers are on the 40-man roster.

The current rotation at AAA Gwinnett is Aaron Blair, Casey Kelly, Chris Ellis, Rob Whalen, & veteran Roberto Hernandez. And of course, it’s constantly in a state of flux.

One pitcher that I purposely did not mention is Manny Banuelos. And it’s simply because his injuries have prevented him from realizing his potential. Until he regains some consistency, he has to be regarded in the 2nd tier.

One more note… top pitcher Sean Newcomb is probably closest from a talent standpoint, but as is the case with most young pitchers (23), he continues to work on consistently spotting his fastball. His stuff is major league ready, but his control is not. That said, he has made great strides over the course of this season and has made the type of progress you look for in a developing pitcher. Watch the movement of the K/BB rate. That’s the key to the progress of a developing pitcher.

To be perfectly honest, I’m not so anxious for the team to trade Harrell. He has given us nothing but positive innings since he’s been in the rotation. Neither John Gant nor Williams Perez are near ready to return. I kinda like getting a win here and there. And what would we get for him anyway? A middling prospect like we got for Jhoulys Chacin?

For the record, that middling prospect was LHP Adam McCreery, who has tossed 17 innings this year for the Braves between Rookie Danville and A- Rome where he has a neat 9.00 ERA. Like I said… middling prospect.

The Chacin trade was prompted by a desire to open a rotation spot for a rookie. That’s fine, but there is no one ready to take Harrell’s spot.

Good game last night. Joe Simpson mentioned that teams were looking at Erin Santana, late of the Braves and currently of the Twins. He still has a couple of more years to go on his current contract. He pitched a great game last night. Nine innings, only 2 runs given up. Hard luck loss for him.

Harrell has some serious movement on his pitches. Gave up some walks but he wiggled off the hook several times. Short delivery, reminds me of Maddux in that way.

Freddie continues in his funk…. EWWWW…

I like Francoeur playing in right field…

Look for Garcia to DH tonight.

Another over thirty retread was Troy Glauss. He gave the Braves one really good month. The rest was forgettable.

Yes, the talent is in the system, just pretty far down.

I think a player has to be in a club’s minor league system for either 5 or six years to be eligible for the rule 5 draft.

Melvin Upton traded to Toronto yesterday by the Pades. Maybe Melvin just likes playing indoors…

Cabrera has added a pitch to his repertoire. A 91 mph change up. His 102 MPH fastball seems very hittable but his slider and change are not. If he could only get his fastball to hop a little. It is still too straight but he is getting there.

V, thanks for the 411, the dope, the skinny, on the braves pitching prospects…after I posted that comment in the early a.m., I went looking at AA again and saw some of the guys that were having good years….I just find it a bit odd, unless it’s like you say they are worried about 40 man roster or perhaps starting clocks too soon (I really hope it’s not that) its just when you see guys are 22-23, thats not all that young, IF a guy is ready. I guess they just don’t feel like they are ready yet. Just the thought of guys coming up next June (to keep the arb clock from starting) then sucking for 2017…doesn’t sound like a fun way to spend time as a fan…I know you can’t rush everyone, but some guys raise to the level of talent they are playing against…

Funny, a few years back we kept hearing, a guy in AA was really playing against the best talent, the top prospects were there…but the braves seem to have found that players are hitting roadblocks at AAA now, and need to go back to AA to get some confidence back…

Heading out to Coolray Field tonight to see the AAA team again. I get to see ol’ pal Aaron Blair toe the rubber. Let’s hope he’s having a good night.

Ber, the thing with all these young pitchers, Aaron Blair being a great example, is that they have to have better control. That’s the key to their development. Those are the things that can only be worked on in game conditions… thus the need to have them throw so many innings per level.

Newcomb is improving. Lucas Sims is improving. Blair was much improved in his last outing. Now, can he repeat it and find consistency. That’s when they’ll be in line for a promotion to the bigs. And those are the 3 to keep your eye on.

Chris Ellis is having a great year, and has moved up because of it, but he isn’t mentioned in the same tier as Newcomb, Sims and Blair. That said, his K/BB rate is far better, thus he’s in a better position to perhaps make his ML debut in September. We’ll see on the others…

Travis Demeritte (21) is a 2B/SS/3B/LF in the mold of the guy I covet, Javier Baez. Big time power, but right now he mixes that with big time strike outs. The good thing is that he’s young enough to make some adjustments in his approach. The skinny is that he’s simply too aggressive at the plate, looking to knock the cover off the ball on every swing.

But the bottom line is this… the team just added some big time RH power to the system for 2 guys that they picked up off the scrap heap in May.

BTW- Demeritte played his HS ball about 15 miles down the road from me at Winder-Barrow High School. I know a bunch of folks from that area. It’s a very good program.

So Coppy managed to make a deal for a much better prospect (TEX #1 pick in 2013) than I imagined. My exact words were “middling prospect”. Is he a Top 10 kinda guy? No. But he’s still a young’un with huge power potential.

Here is the Rangers’ own scouting report prior to 2016:

Travis Demeritte hit 25 home runs in 2014 to lead the Sally League. On June 4th, 2015, Demeritte was suspended for 80 games when he tested positive for Furosemide, a banned performance enhancing drug. Related? Cause and effect? I don’t know but it was clearly not good for the Rangers 2013 supplemental first round pick.

Scouting Report: The PED suspension creates a huge cloud of uncertainty around Demeritte. However, he does have plus bat speed and plenty of leverage to suggest plus future power. What is also in his profile is plenty of swing and miss and that, above the PED suspension is the most troubling aspect of his game.

In 210 professional games, he’s posted a 60% contact rate. He walked 106 times which will help balance out his penchant to strike out, but unless he cuts down on his strike out rate, he’s an extra bat at the highest level.

He’s an average runner with the ability to steal high single digit stolen bases annually.

No real reason to spread out his 2016 numbers here (although the power numbers are kind of impressive) because they are from A+ ball and don’t really translate to what he’ll do in higher leagues.

BTW- Furosemide is the generic name for Lasix, a commonly prescribed diuretic.

Jim Johnson will probably be the next to be moved. I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of Ian Krol or Hunter Cervenka moved on along as well.

Still can’t imagine anybody taking on Erick Aybar, and Gordon Beckham will probably be no more than an a secondary name in a bigger deal.

Same with Viz. I don’t think he’d be a primary in any deal, but could be an addition.

The team seems sincere in their desire to keep Jeff Francoeur, although I wouldn’t be upset if they pulled a KJ and traded him for a prospect now and re-signed him in the offseason.

I get the feeling that there might be a narrow market for Nick Markakis if the Braves will eat some money. And they just might do it, IMO.

Now… back to what is for 2016.

Who takes Harrell’s spot in the rotation? Neither Williams Perez nor John Gant are close to returning. I don’t think they’d bring Aaron Blair back yet (more on him later). Casey Kelly and Ryan Weber have made starts before, but both are working out of Gwinnett’s bullpen these days and neither is stretched out to start. But either could be promoted to fill the bullpen void.

Still, gotta find a starter. Both Chris Ellis and Rob Whalen have had successful seasons between AA/AAA, but I wouldn’t think the FOT’s would want to rush either one.

I think it’s plausible that the team could look outside the organization (translated: scrap heap) for help. Then there’s always 35-year-old Roberto Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona. The Braves signed him to a minor league deal a couple of weeks ago after he had been released by TOR’s AAA team. He had signed a minor league deal with them earlier this season looking to have a shot at their ML rotation but it never happened. In 2 starts at Gwinnett, he’s worked to a 3.72 ERA and 1.345 WHIP (walks and hits per inning), which is consistent to what he’s produced for about the last 4-5 years.

He made 11 very pedestrian starts for HOU last season. If the Braves opt to give him a spot, it’ll only be as filler until the cavalry comes to the rescue.

Now as to Aaron Blair. After struggling back at AAA, he has now had 2 straight quality starts in a row. He went 6 IP last night with 9 K’s, scattering only 5 hits and allowing only 1 unearned run. And in that 6th inning, he worked around a leadoff 3 base error and stranded the guy at 3B with a couple of weak popups and a K. (The error was horrific. Ronnier Mustellier looked like a tee baller circling under the deep fly ball, then tried to basket catch it only to fall forward and bust his knees in the turf as the ball fell in front of him and bounced off his body. The CF had to run over and get the ball back in. It was nauseating. He should never be allowed to play the OF ever again.)

But I got off on a bit of a rabbit trail…

Blair looked very good to me last night. He’s making progress again, and IMO his continued development should NOT be interrupted by being called up again to fill the new rotation void in ATL.

MLB’s top prospects have had their midseason re-order, and many of the Braves 2016 draftees and Int’l signees have made the team’s new Top 30.

Of course, our Top 4 went unchanged with Dansby, Ozzie, Sean Newcomb and Kolby Allard holding steady. But this year’s #1 draft pick Ian Anderson now checks in at #5.

    Other notables:

RHP Mike Soroka has jumped to #6
RHP Joey Wentz debuts at #7
3B Kevin Maitan debuts at #8 (although he’ll be #1 by this time next year)
IF Travis Demeritte comes in at #9 (Coppy deserves a medal for that deal)
RHP Kyle Muller debuts at #12
OF Dustin Peterson rises to #19

    Notable slides:

LHP Manny Banuelos drops out of the Top 10 all the way to #23
OF Braxton Davidson drops to #25

I think it should be noted that Davidson’s slide appears to be due mainly to the addition of the newcomers to the list, although fellow OF Peterson has now passed him.

I like the way DOB sums up last night’s trade:

The Braves took two pitchers they got off the scrap heap earlier this season and used them to acquire [Travis] Demeritte, a 21-year-old former first-round draft pick from Winder, Ga., who has 25 homers in 88 games in high-A ball and started at second base for the U.S. in this month’s All-Star Futures Game in San Diego.

Coppy, talking to DOB last night about the deal:

“I’ve been talking to J.D. (Daniels) probably for a week, almost 10 days. And following the great start Lucas had last night they showed a little more interest than they had (recently) and we were able to get this done really over the past couple of hours…

“It’s a great credit to our pro scouting staff, it’s a great credit to our coaching staff, that we were able to get these players (Harrell and Alvarez) who weren’t with the Braves nine weeks ago and put them in spots to where they had a lot of success. To be able to get back someone who we think becomes one of our best hitting prospects, that’s very satisfying.

“He’s about 6 feet, 6-1, kind of like a Ron Gant, wiry strong, really quick bat. He’s been on fire lately. Each day as we talked through (trade proposals) it seemed like he hit a home run each game. I thought, we are never going to get this guy. And I think because of the way Lucas pitched last night we were able to get him, and that’s really exciting.”

OK… I’ll give up his numbers. He’s slashed .272/.352/..583 with 25 HR’s, but 125 K’s at A+ High Desert in the California League.

I imagine he’ll be assigned to A+ Carolina for us.

Fun game last night. Braves bats came alive and it was a thing of beauty.

Folty again showed why he is still on the upside of his learning curve. He was pitching great and suddenly BOOM! One misq afield seemed to rattle him. That’s okay, he is still a pup.

    Cabrera continues to impress.

Jim Johnson has an absolutely devastating breaking ball last night. I don’t know where he is headed but it will be a contender who needs bullpen help. That could be anyone couldn’t it?

Last night the guys in the booth were touting the Texiera trade… I don’t think I would ever tout that one as a successful trade, not from the Braves stand point. Sure, he averaged an increase of one run per game but what they needed was relief pitching.

One more thing about the Texeria trade, when you need a pick up truck, you don’t buy a sports car just because it is a sexy ride. Problem is, you still needed the pick up truck.

The advantage the Braves have right now is they just need transportation, they can sort out the individual roles later.

Anyone else think that the Mets would be in a much different position in the standings if they had kept Murphy and not let him go to Washington?

Oops… I’m back for a minute. It just dawned on me that the team doesn’t really need to address the rotation spot until Sunday, when it rolls around again. They could bring up a couple of pen arms – the aforementioned Kelly and Weber – until Sunday.

But I must also pass along a wild rumor that I just read. No real credibility here, but it is at least plausible from the standpoint that the Royals have had published interest in Markakis. The wild rumor says that ATL and KC are talking about Markakis for RHRP Joakim Soria and 3B prospect Hunter Dozier. Soria would be a nice replacement for Jim Johnson, should he be dealt, and is signed through 2018. Dozier is a 24-year-old RH 3B at AAA for KC who is blocked by Mike Moustakas (currently DL’d) and Cheslor Cuthbert in KC. He’s got decent power numbers and could be our 3B as early as 2017.

The wild rumor continues that the teams are settled on players, but are still negotiating the amount of money that ATL will send along with Nick.

Personally, I can’t imagine KC giving up both of those players for Nick unless the Braves take on all of Soria’s salary and most of Nick’s. Again… it’s just a wild free range rumor, but at least it’s something to give a passing glance at.

  281. 292 Gil in Mechanicsville July 28, 2016 at 10:13 am

Yes, it often comes down to money. While I can see the Braves moving Markakis, I don’t see the benefit of giving him away. Why bother with a more expensive replacement when the guy you are replacing does not have to be?

Anywoo, it someone else’s money so I’ll not fret over it. Not like the team the Braves currently has is going to contend for any championships.

It is why the Braves have scores of scouts and analysis so they can assess the potential benefits of 1000s of current minor league players and target those who can help the club both short and long term.

I suspect Dozier is the prize they have their eye on and Soria is a guy who has worn out his welcome in KC. Perhaps the Braves see a flaw in Soria’s delivery they believe they can fix like they have with a dozen other cast offs the past three seasons.

Not necessarily trying to compare Folty to a HOF pitcher per se, but does he remind you a little bit of John Smoltz early in his career? I remember that John would let his emotions get the best of him after giving up a big hit and the wheels would come off. I also remember the clamor for Bobby to take him out of the rotation after he racked up 11 L’s in the first half. Then I remember him turning the corner and beginning to look like the HOF’er that he’d become.

I also remember him speaking to Sports Psychologist Dr. Jack Llewellyn, who would later become a paid consultant to the team. Dr. Llewellyn still practices. I wonder if we can get Folty a referral?

*they are going to be sellers it looks like, why take on Nick M?

Great question. First, they don’t believe they are out of at least a Wild Card run as of yet. Second, they have been hurt by injuries in their OF and are currently without CF Lo Cain. They’d prefer a CF type OF, but the market on those is not very robust past a few rentals. Nick represents a multi-year commitment and an insurance policy for the potential future loss of OF’s who are close to FA… in addition to help for a stretch run. And IMO, Nick would perform better for a team that has something to play for. He is a clutch guy and the consummate veteran professional.

Money is the key, because as you said KC is a small market team. So it would be predicated on ATL taking on all of Soria’s contract, and paying a good portion of Nick’s as well. That’s the impetus for dangling Dozier as inducement.

So after today’s midseason re-order of baseball’s Top 100 prospects, the Braves now have 5 players that represent. They are:

    5 Dansby Swanson

    #19 Ozzie Albies
    #60 Sean Newcomb
    #75 Kolby Allard
    #94 Ian Anderson

    Other Braves players to note:

Newly acquired Travis Demeritte checks in as the #8 prospect at 2B, even though most scouts agree that his skills probably profile better to 3B.

Both Dansby and Ozzie show up in the Top 10 at SS at #3 and #8 respectively, even though Ozzie is now converted to 2B.

Sadly, none of our prospects cracks the Top 10 at C, OF, 1B or 3B, although as noted above, Demeritte is will get a long look at 3B and LF. Coppy says they’ll play him around at 2B/SS/3B/LF and see where he best fits. I think he “best fits” in LF.

The Cards, Giants, Nats, Jays, Red Sox, Indians, Rangers, O’s, Dodgers and Mets have all been rumored to be looking for late inning relievers. With the probable exception of division rivals Nats and Mets, and most likely LA for other reasons, I would think that the remaining 7 teams should have some level of interest in Jim Johnson. Actually, all 10 probably have some interest, but dealing within the division is bad mojo, and LA has “been there, done that”.

But JJ’s numbers of late have been good… really good. I’ve read comps that show that his effectiveness since coming off the DL is similar to his heyday as BAL’s closer. His ERA is at 2.08 in that span. His fastball is sitting at 94-95mph, and he’s striking out batters at a 19.2% clip. All of those numbers are his best since his back-to-back 50 save seasons as the O’s closer in 2012-2013.

If Coppy can pull a Demeritte out of a hat for Harrell/Alvarez, what can he get for JJ?

Well, last night I was going to point out that Matt Wisler had in his last 3 starts, had given up 6 , 5 and then 6 runs again…but then I saw via DOB, they had sent him down to AAA…a shorter leash than Aaron Blair had….hmmm, now they need 2 starters, or if Blair comes back up, 1 more?
Makes one wonder if something is afoot…like Julio to Boston and Bucholtz and a top prospect to the braves? Or some other pitcher a team would love to not pay anymore?

a shorter leash than Aaron Blair had…

Not really. Wisler’s been in the rotation since early last year. But there comes a point in time that a manager and a pitcher realizes there is correction to be made, and that cannot be accomplished at the major league level.

When Blair was first sent down, he seemingly bottomed out, but the truth is that he was working on specific mechanics and specific pitches. You cannot pitch to win and pitch to correct at the same time. Over the last couple of starts, you’ve seen the improvement on Blair’s control. Now is Wisler’s time to work a few games where he pitches to correct. Expect him to get knocked around a couple of times.

But naturally it raises the question: “who will fill that rotation spot?” For those keeping up with such things, Rob Whalen started for Gwinnett last night and thus would be on the same schedule. Perhaps it’s time to give this young’un a look.

It should be mentioned here that neither Williams Perez nor John Gant have made strides toward returning from their respective injuries, so neither is an option right now.

If Gant can make it back at some point, perhaps both he and Whalen can be in the same rotation this season. This is significant only in that those were the 2 pitchers we got back from NYM last year for KJ and Juan Uribe.

    Barry Jackson, Miami Herald:

The Marlins are determined to add at least one starting pitcher, and two ideally, before Monday’s trade deadline, and we’re told these are three new names in whom they’ve expressed interest: Kansas City’s Edinson Volquez (8-8, 4.56 ERA, has a $10 million mutual option next season), the Angels’ Matt Shoemaker (5-11, 4.17, under team control through 2020), and Atlanta’s Julio Teheran (3-8, 2.71, due $6.3, $8 million, $11 million through 2019).

First, I cannot imagine Coppy sending Julio to a division rival. Period. So the fact that MIA has shown interest toward acquiring does not mean that ATL has reciprocated.

Second, as I just noted, I don’t think he’s going anywhere now… unless Boston loosens its grip on Andrew Benintendi.

I post this merely out of a self perceived duty to inform on all things Braves related that I run across.

The Marlins-Pads deal is a big’un. Seven players involved.

The Fish get RH starters Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea as well as RH reliever Tayron Guerrero, who has been from AA to the majors this season. The Padres get back RH starter Jarred Cosart, top 1B power prospect Josh Naylor, minor league RHP Luis Castillo and injured RH reliever Carter Capps who underwent TJ earlier this year.

Now that the ball is rolling on starting pitching, maybe it loosens up the market for TEX, BOS, BAL, SF, LA… now that I think about it, the list of teams NOT looking for starting pitching may be alot shorter.

Some procedural items… “housekeeping”, if you will…

The Braves have not yet officially assigned newly acquired Travis Demeritte anywhere yet. Early speculation was that he’d go to our A+ affiliate since that’s where he was with TEX, however I have read at least 1 report that says the Braves FOT’s are looking at AA. We should hear something today, I would think.

Wonder why the delay? Wonder if a few other corresponding moves, maybe even promotions, are coming as well? Who knows..?

Next, the team already has an extra bullpen arm since they don’t intend to promote a starter for Sunday’s game until Sunday. Makes sense, right? So using the same logic, who do they call up to replace Wisler on the roster? Do they really need yet another reliever?

And speaking of Wisler’s spot in the rotation, it rolls back around on Wednesday, with a Monday off day in between. So conceivably, the team could simply skip that spot and pick back up with Jenkins on regular rest.

Of course, all that is compounded by the trade deadline, so a few other names could be coming and going anyway.

One more item: the news front is very quiet on injured pitchers WillyP, John Gant and Vizzy. I would have thought to have heard something on Viz by now… something besides crickets. Regardless, none of those 3 will be close to returning anytime soon.

Another way yo put it: He’s an all or nothing kind of hitter, does not cut down on his awing with two strikes… Just saying…

Yes, no hurry to make any moves until the dust settles. Lots of guys already have their “go bags” packed and ready, all will say the right things about how much they enjoyed their time with team X and will say how happy they are to be with a contender in team Y and how they hope they can put team Y over the top….

What they will not say is how happy they are to escape the hell hole that team X had become and that they are all a bunch of losers…

    Not my first trade deadline….

    Things that will surprise me.

    1. That Jim Johnson is not traded. Only question is how much the Braves get in return.

    2. That Nick Markakis is still in an Atlanta uni on Tuesday

    3. That Eric Aybar is not traded, DFA or otherwise still on this team after August first.

    4. That at least one other pitcher current on the Braves staff isn’t traded for some single A prospect.

Not sure there will be any takers unless he has a monster game between now and Sunday. And only then if we eat about half his remaining salary.

I guess the only way a trade with Julio works is to get a prospect in a picture like I said with the Red Sox or perhaps some other team that has a fairly expensive picture but that doesn’t make any sense for a playoff team to do does it?

I’m using voice text on my cell phone so he was going to be errors. I guess the Red Sox would be about the only thing that makes sense but that’s if Clay Buchholz is fixable. Perhaps a third team involved might make sense where they trade their overpriced potential good starter who isn’t good right now?

The Braves are kind of in the cat birds seat when it comes to signing free agents next winter. Because they are in the bottom ten, they would not lose a draft pick as compensation.

Jim Johnson was auditioning last night but I suspect so was Nick Markakis. Those two doubles he hit would have been home runs in Baltimore.

A comment about Jenkins’ outing last night. He looked really good. The home plate umpire had a bit of a mystery strike zone and that can be tough on a young pitcher. I guess my question about that would be if a pitcher’s stuff is so good that it fools the umpire or the umpire is just incompetent? Could go either way methinks…

On another note completely not about baseball… It seems everytime I think I have enough money to get my new/old truck painted, another unexpected expense occurs. I love the way it drives and runs now but it does look a bit tawdy. Jo says bad news always comes in threes but I think the recent salvo has had more rounds than that… SIGH!

Yes, I would like LuCroy but I doubt Coppy is into short term solutions. Wilson Ramos will be available this winter and I have always like the guy. He and Eddied Perez will become best buds.

Eric Norris would be a good fit too but it’s a stretch for any player to leave SOCAL to come back east. San Diago is a place you go to, not come from…

Yep, he already has more home runs than any player currently on the Braves roster. So, the Braves trade a guy who would never be seen in an Atlanta Braves uniform again for a right hander outfielder with some pop in his bat. Works for me. In essence, the Braves will being paying about $8.5 MM more than they would with Olivares on the payroll. Works for me.

Still think Markais is available for the right price. As it is, they can bat Kemp between Freddie and Nick. Should make everyone better.

Mallex Smith will now have time to continue to learn his craft in Triple A.

I doubt he will return to that haven of social justice of Cuba where most of his ill gotten gains would be taxed and redistributed to the Castro brothers.

I was about as down on Coppy as I have ever been of late..as you all know, I have felt like the team was going way too far into getting pitching, while the Red Sox, Cubs, Astros were all about drafting hitters…
But, getting the 2nd baseman from the Rangers, for so little and now Matt Kemp for our biggest albatross? (Granted, he traded for said albatross, but still)
Flat out amazing! I keep reading a swap of bat contracts….
No…a swap of useless woman beater , that as DOB said seemed to have none of the 5 main tools they talk about players having…
    For a guy on pace for….36 HR’s and 107 RBI’s!!!!
I am old school. I know that V, Gil ,and CL are old school…what would you rather have? A guy with a .350 OBP who has 31 RBI’s?
Or a guy with a .285 OBP (hitting .261) with 69 RBI’s? He has played in 2 huge parks, it will be better on his hips roaming a smaller outfield, and he will drive in a ton more runs here, IMHO…why? Cuz…
He is hitting .313 with runners in scoring position. He WILL drive in runs no one else is driving in…
A fantastic trade for to get a guy, this power bat, who is just a few months older than H.O. Did you know H.O. is a 31 Y.O. ???? Did I ever mention this fact before? 😕

Kemp is more prototypical of what baseball has become. And, it’s a start. I hope he likes it in the Big A. It will be a culture shock for him after playing in LALA land for most of his career but who knows, he just might be the spark that turns things around.

Funny thing about winning, it loosens all sorts of purse strings, just ask the Phillies… Opportunities to win it all only come around once a decade or maybe once a century if you are the Cubs. Good for them. They have a really good team and a manager who knows how to win. Still, you never know. There are 29 other teams trying to accomplish the same goal. Okay, 28 if you don’t include the Braves but they have a ton of work to do.

Watched the Astros blow a lead in the bottom of the ninth last night. Ump called an obvious third strike a ball to put Upton on with two outs. Things unraveled from there.

I am inclined to believe that umpires are becoming more of an hindrance than an asset in calling balls and strikes. In this age of lasers and high tech, perhaps it’s time to move on. After all, computers don’t feel the need to be respected. They don’t cope an attitude. They just are.

Funny thing, in the eye of the beholder kind of thing. Padres so glad to be rid of Matt Kemp, they basically paid the Braves to take him off their hands. Kemp is not known for his stellar defensive prowess but as a left fielder where the Braves have played the likes of Evan Gattis, I doubt defense was the Braves motivation. Get a lead and plug in Francoeur as a late inning defensive replacement if that is a big concern. As it is, the Braves have had a terrible time getting to the point they needed to guard a lead.

Olivera will not go down as one of Coppy’s best trades but it happens. The Shelby Miller trade overshadowed that. Speaking of whom, the Braves could get for nothing right now.

Here I am! Here I am!

OK, y’all have pretty much covered the bases here (pun fully intended), but I will put my 2 cents in – or 1.2 cents after taxes.

Is Kemp the same guy that should have won the MVP in 2011? (Ryan Braun cheated his way to that one.) No… clearly he is not. His speed has diminished, his defense has diminished as a result, and his overall numbers have declined.

But 23 HR and 69 RBI make him the team leader in both, and it ain’t even close.

I’ll tell you what else he does… he clarifies and balances a lineup that was too LH heavy and lacked a true cleanup hitter. And he provides a big bat behind Freddie Freeman that will give FF some protection for the first time in a couple of years.

Personally, I don’t care that he’s batting just .262. That’s actually 6th on this team, and just .009 points from 3rd.

And as I said, it makes Snit’s job of writing out the lineup alot easier now. I can even do it.

    1- Jace Peterson, 2B (LH, OBP .358)
2- Adonis Garcia, 3B (RH, .348/.383 over the last 30 days)
    3- Freddie Freeman, 1B (LH, no-brainer)
4- Matt Kemp, LF (RH, power… finally)
5- Nick Markakis, RF (LH, he does still hit a few doubles here and there)
    6- Ender Inciarte, CF (LH)
    7- catching tandem
8- SS, preferably someone besides Erick Aybar

I have reversed course on my urgent desire for the Braves to trade for SD’s Derek Norris. I do believe the Braves will have ample opportunity to address the catching position through FA, and maybe find a better fit there without having to give up any prospects to acquire one.

Among the catchers that will be available:
    Matt Wieters
    Nick Hundley
    Wilson Ramos

I think they’ll make a big push for the SH Wieters.

Now that the Braves have acquired a full time LF, I think they’ll push really hard to trade Markakis today. They now have 4 starting OF if you count the disabled Malles Smith.

There is a chance they’ll trade Inciarte if the return is acceptable.

A much as I like Inciarte, keeping both Inciarte and Mallex gives you 2 of 3 OF with little power. I don’t think the Braves really want that to be the case, and I do think they are committed long term to Mallex. The fact that Markakis offers little power at this point just complicates the issue.

    A couple other observations…

Jace Peterson is really playing good baseball right now, whether at 2B or in LF, where he will no longer get many starts. But his solid efforts right now lessen the urgency to call up Ozzie… and I suppose it also lessens the likelihood of the Dansby and Ozzie Show making an appearance right away.

Regardless of whether Coppy can trade Aybar, which is highly unlikely, I think the team can get by with d’Arnaud and Beckham for the short term and not miss a beat.

As for any potential Aybar trade, I wouldn’t hold my breath. That said, Coppy is showing an uncanny ability to unload the dross, so I’m not counting anything out completely until 4pm today.

My personal list of the most likely Braves to be moved before today’s 4pm ET deadline, in order:

    Jim Johnson
1 of Hunter Cervenka or EOF or Ian Kroll, in that order
    Erick Aybar
    Nick Markakis
    Ender Inciarte
    Jeff Francoeur
    Jose Ramirez
    Jace Peterson
    Gordon Beckham

It should be noted that when the team DL’d LHRP Matt Marksberry yesterday, they recalled SS Daniel Castro to take his roster spot. Is that a precursor to Aybar leaving the roster today one way or another?

    So… as it stands…

The Indians acquisition of Andrew Miller cements them as the best team in the AL, IMO. That’s regardless of losing the Lucroy sweepstakes.

Currently, I still think the Cubs are the class of the NL, but if the Giants can pick up Jay Bruce from Cincy, they’ll be in the conversation… especially if they get both Bruce and P Matt Moore from Tampa.

My mid-season NL predictions for October are fairly easy, IMO. Division winners will be the Giants, Cubs and Nats, and I don’t think any of those races will be very close. The Wild Cards will probably be LA and MIA. It’s possible the Cards could make some noise, but I don’t see it unless they make a major upgrade in the next 7 1/2 hours. But it doesn’t matter. Chicago is too good.

Can the Cubs get back to the World Series for the first time in modern history?

part 915 of I am too old for today’s baseball….
Before acquiring Matt Kemp, the Braves looked into a deal for outfielder Ryan Braun, Heyman tweets. Braun, certainly, would have been the more intriguing addition, given that he has significantly out-produced Kemp this year, though presumably Milwaukee is much less interested in holding onto a big chunk of Braun’s salary to facilitate a deal.
    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/08/deadline-notes-astros-sale-rays-cubs-beltran-braves.html#comments

    32 Year old Ryan Braun’s numbers…(In 85 games, he hasn’t played in more than 140 games since 2012-I know suspension played a part in 1 season at least) scored 50 runs, 104 hits, 14 HR’s 46 RBI’s .321 BA, .383 OBP 30 walks.

31 Year Old Matt Kemp’s numbers (in 100 games, even with arthritic hips, he has played at least 150 games the previous 2 seasons)
    Scored 54 runs, 107 hits 23 HR’s (in a much bigger park than Braun’s) 69 RBI’s (I know, not a real stat these days) .262 BA .285 OBP , 16 walks.
Now, do Braun’s numbers look….significantly better than Kemp’s?

At this point, I would just as soon have Kemp over Braun. Sorry, but I don’t trust numbers which could be tainted.

On Aybar, I think the Braves will keep playing him until they bring up Swanson if they can’t move him. They won’t drop him just to drop him at this point. No matter how we feel about him.

The Braves continue to look at catchers, but this is also a need that could be satisfied after today. McCann remains a possibility if the Yanks eat enough $. But they’re current return ask exceeds the Braves’ comfort level.

Translation: They are asking for more or better prospects than Coppy is willing to part with. They probably want 2 of the top pitching prospects plus some other considerations. Coppy is smarter than that.

Hmmm… trying to decide if I’d part with 1 top pitching prospect (plus lesser pieces) for 3 1/2 years of Brain McCann at age 32-35.

If the Yanks ate enough of the contract, and it was not Kolby Allard, Sean Newcomb, Max Fried, Mike Soroka or any of this year’s draft class, I think I would like it.

    RE: McCann…

Prospects aside, the Braves reportedly would like the Yanks to cover about half of the remaining $49M owed to Mac. The Yanks have thus far declined.

Not sure if talks have ever gotten really serious and past the initial “do we have a match” level. I think if NYY would be open to covering $20M or so, then they might advance into talking about prospects.

And naturally, they’re all playing poker today. Perhaps if the Braves made the right prospect(s) available, the Yanks would be more flexible with their coinage. It’s a sliding scale, so to speak. The better the prospects in return, the more $$ comes with Mac.

My gut says they’ll never get to that level, though.

Would Adonis be a candidate for trade? His trade value may never be higher. He’s slashing .308/.337/.516 over his last 41 games.

Yes, I know he’s one of the few consistent offensive players on the current roster, but I don’t think he’s in the long term plans. And I do think he’d be attractive to a contender in need of a RH bat.

Just thinking out loud… so to speak.

Jerry Crasnick says a medical issue may be holding up the deal of Jay Bruce to the Mets.

And in other medical related news:

In case you missed it, newly acquired Fish pitcher Colin Rea left his first start with an elbow issue after facing just 11 batters. The Fish are claiming that the Pads sent them damaged goods and are seeking recourse… and thus are sending Rea back to the Pads. According to Rosenthal (or at least his sources), they aren’t negating the original deal. To facilitate the return, the Fish are sending Rea back in an entirely separate deal. Who they will receive back is not yet known.

Kinda reminds me of the Service Desk at Walmart, except different. I wonder if Marlins GM Michael Hill kept his receipt?

Gotta check those medical reports closely, boys.

    Next important date:

August 31, 4pm ET: the revocable waiver trade deadline.

Any player that passes through revocable waivers can be traded before August 31 and still be eligible for the post-season. Teams routinely pass scores of players through revocable waivers. All 30 teams have an opportunity to make a claim on the player, and the order of teams is in reverse order of the standings. If a player clears, he can he traded. If a player is claimed, the 2 teams have 48 hours to work out a deal. Also, if a player is claimed, his current team can simply pull him back, hence “revocable”. A player that has been pulled back cannot be placed on waivers a 2nd time.

So the next wave of news after today will be reports of players that have passed through cleanly.

Tradeable players on the current Braves roster that would most likely pass through cleanly without a claim: Markakis, Aybar, Beckham. Cervenka would not. JimmyJohn would probably not.

    3- Folty

    5- Tyrell Jenkins

John Gant could be back in a couple of weeks, but not before a couple more turns through the rotation. Best bets to come up and make a start or 2 are Casey Kelly and Aaron Blair pt. 2. This is going to be what prevents the team from finishing the season on an upswing.

Coppy is a sly dude. According to the beat writers collectively, Coppy didn’t get an offer he liked for JJ, so he’ll pass him through waivers and start up again later this month when things get really dicey for the contenders. All it will really take is a key injury to somebody’s closer and the price will go up.

A similar event could actually make Aybar desirable to somebody. Injuries have a way of inflating another guy’s real value. The down side to this is that Aybar has to play to remain “in play”.

while I am surprised no one took the bait, otherwise known as, Jim Johnson, it does not bother me at all for the Braves to keep him in the fold. Aybar will play out the string until the Braves bring up their next shortstop of the future. I guess as for the rest of the band of misfit toys, keep doing what you are doing and get on base ahead of Matt Kemp. Amazing how one player can make a difference.

It was nice to see Frenchy get that winning home run yesterday. While not an All-star, he has become a solid bat off the bench and a great role model for the young guys.

and didn’t De La Cruz do a nice job? Oh by the way, Lucas Harrell won his debut game with the Rangers yesterday so good for him. I’m still pulling for the Astros but that is a totally different story.

Just read that Boston is promoting the much ballyhooed Andrew Benintendi. Good for him. Don’t think the suits in ATL are thinking on a parallel track, though. I get the feeling they are in NO hurry to promote any of our top prospects.

Personally, I’d like to see all 3 of Dansby, Ozzie and Dustin Peterson bumped up to AAA right away. We need to see exactly what Peterson especially has to offer. And I see no reason to continue The D&O Show at AA unless they feel the pressure is lesser there. But honestly none of those 3 have anything left to prove there.

I get the feeling everyone is looking for the next Troy Tulowitzki or Cal Ripken to play short. I think that is why I was so disappointed when Simba was traded. Sure, he was still learning how to hit in the majors, something Aybar has apparently forgot, but his defense more than made up for it.

Swanson will never be a .300 hitter but neither will most ML shortstops. Somebody has to bat eight after all. That said, at least he has some pop in his bat, Ozzie can bat second behind Mallex.

Then their are the bevy of International signing that are still 4 to f years off…

Usually a team gives up some offense to be strong defensively up the middle. The well known secret is your offense comes from your corners. Stolen bases methinks is an unnecessary risk but having good baserunning skills and speed on the bases is not.

Maybe we will see some of these kids in September.

Bad news about Julio but opportunities abound for young guys who want a shot. hey, might get lucky.. or not. I doubt it will make much difference at this point but the Braves will seriously have a legitimate shot at the number one overall pick going into the 2017 draft now.

The Nats are dancing in the street knowing they won’t have to face Julio. Not like he was a guaranteed win for los Bravos but he did at least make the other team work for it.

Bad news about Julio but opportunities abound for young guys who want a shot.

Word is that Joel De La Cruz will stay in the rotation and make his next turn on Saturday at STL. Both Bowman and DOB speculate that Rob Whalen could make his ML debut tomorrow night. As for Teheran’s next turn… it could be Aaron Blair or Casey Kelly.

Blair has now had 3 straight good starts. K’s are up, BB’s are down. Generating alot of swings and misses. And his fastball is now touching 95 where it had been sitting 91-92 in Atlanta. He’s definitely doing something different. From what I recall, much is in his head. If he’ll trust his “stuff” and stop trying to nibble corners, he’ll be just fine. He’s also got to realize that ML hitters are gonna hit. He can’t let a couple hard hit balls stick in his mind. He needs to pitch batter to batter and have a very short memory.

I was reminded of a very important detail regarding the next trade deadline…

    There really isn’t one.

August 31 (midnight) is the deadline to have a player on your roster still be eligible for the post-season. But teams can make trades through revocable waivers from now until the end of the season.

So CL, I misled you on the most excellent countdown box. My apologies…

From what I recall, that was mostly the problem with Mike Minor. I think young pitchers have two big hurdles to overcome. One is to realize they cannot blow away major league hitters like they can guys still in the minors.

Two, they are not going to hurl a shut out every time they take the mound.

And yes you are right, too many times they try to get cute and nibble at the corners. Big league umpires are notorious for not giving rookies that call. Heck, the other night I saw one pitch down the middle that was called a ball. Make them put it in play and let your defense help you. Swing and miss stuff is great but you won’t finish many games striking out 15 guys a night and your arm will fall off.

Indeed Rob Whalen will make tonight’s start, his ML debut, vs. the Pirates at The Ted.

Tyrell Jenkins toes the rubber in the series finale tomorrow, but the starter for Friday’s series opener in St. Louis is still up in the air. The candidates are Aaron Blair and Casey Kelly. Personally, I’d like to see Blair remain in Gwinnett and continue the progress he has been making.

I’d really like to see Coppy bring in another starter from somewhere else. Our rotation is in tatters, and many of the young candidates simply don’t need to be rushed.

Josh Collmenter is still out there in DFA limbo. He can at least give you some meaningful innings through the end of the season. And who knows? Roger might work his mojo on him and return him to the pitcher he was when ARI tabbed him as their Opening Day starter just last year.

One really has to wonder how a pitcher goes from being a number one to DFA in one season. My guess is one of two things, injury which cause a player to alter his mechanics or poor coaching which causes a pitcher to alter his mechanics.

I know it is a real travail to fix a mechanical flaw even if you know what it is and you are aware of it. When I bowled, I would tend to throw across my body, I knew I was doing it, everyone else knew I was doing it, yet, I continued to do it…. Needless to say, I missed my spot a lot.

I think pitchers are like that in spades and having to think about what they are doing instead of just doing it is why they get sent down to Triple A or lower. You can’t think, you just have to do. You don’t have time to think in the big leagues, that is what coaches are for.

I am looking forward to seeing Wheeling tonight. It’s always fun to see a kid when he makes it to the show for the first time.

And didn’t both Freddie and Matt both fail miserably last night? Sigh…. Braves had their chances, just could not follow thru. And what of Ski last night? Credited with two doubles that were hit off infielders… Two of the shortest doubles I have ever seen. Someone needs to school whoever the official scorer is in Atlanta on what real baseball is about.

Such a good point Ber. My only guess is some nagging injury which is yet to be revealed. In order to sign him, a team would have to pick up the balance of his contract which is not all that great but if a team thinks he will be released outright, the price is much cheaper. Not by much but who’s counting? Right?

The Braves seem to favor pitchers who have been released. The ultimate buy low sell high mode of operation. I.E. Lucas Harrell and Dario Alvarez. To a lesser extent, Bud Norris and Jules Chacin.

I think Coppy may have learned a valuable lesson last season when he cleaned out the cupboard to acquire Hector Olivera from the Dodgers. He in essence stripped the team of three arms, granted, not All-stars but still, there was no one left to fill the void, even short term.

Maybe he’s waiting for the Snakes to DFA Shelby Miller too. Pretty sure Coppy would be willing to throw in a shortstop on the deal.

One last parting thought…. Last night’s game was one which was very winnable. There were guys on base several times ahead of both Freeman and Kemp. Granted, Cole is not some dogpile pitcher but he was hittable. Sorry but I am of the mind Fab 5 needs some counseling. He just does not appear to have any fire in the belly at this point.

Now, his defense has not faulted and he made a couple of really nice plays last night but his strike out rate is alarming, at least to me.

Gil, concerning FF: think possibly the constant changing and roster moves is unsettled him? Perhaps wondering if he is deemed good enough for the team to keep or trade? I think I’d have those thoughts if I was in that position, I’d be concerned, have my focus disrupted.. Just wondering.

I got a new prescription yesterday, took it last night for the first time. Let me tell you: I slept like I never have before. Went to bed at 10:30 which is early for me. Slept all night without waking. In fact, when Littlejohn, our cat, woke me at 1:14 this afternoon, I was still enjoying deep, restful sleep. However, if it wasn’t for spell-check, you probably wouldn’t be able to read this! Gil, I won’t even attempt to work on the need lead until I can at least see straight.

Kelly followed Littlejohn into my room when he woke me up. I saw two of her. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE TODAY! Wow, I wonder if this is what people who take drugs feel like? I’m gonna double check the dosage of this stuff and cut it at least in half tonight! It’s almost like that stuff I was given in the hospital when I had that pancreatitis. Wowser! Gonna stick to no-brainer stuff until this wears off! Gabapentin is the name of it, Gil, in case you’re interested. Might help you be able to sleep.

I wonder why he wasn’t starting this year? Looks like a reliever only

    Reliever this year, yes.

I read today that Folty aside, the 3 other “known” starters have a combined 7 major league starts between them. And none more than 4 individually (Jenkins – 4, de la Cruz – 3, Whalen – 0). Add in Folty’s 28, and the currently known 4 starting pitchers have a combined 35 career starts.

We just need some help, and there isn’t much out there.

Coppy keeps stating that the team really wants to end this year on an upswing building momentum toward opening SunTrust Park in 2017. Well, he better find a pitcher somewhere, cause last I checked you need a few that can go more than 4 innings.

If bringing in Kemp was “the first step” toward building the new team, then Step 2 needs to be a veteran pitcher… now. Otherwise the only momentum the Braves will be building is in free fall.

You know, if the team intends to rebuild “The Braves Way”, and are harkening back to 1991, I recall that team had 4 young pitchers – Glavine, Smoltz, Avery, Pete Smith – and a cagey veteran in Charlie Leibrandt, whose 15 W’s were crucial for the Braves to make their meteoric rise from the gutter.

Man what I wouldn’t give for a cagey veteran LH starter for this patchwork rotation…

Then just 1 hit allowed the rest of the way. That’s a pretty good adjustment. If you ask me, he had a belly full of butterflies to start the game.

Whalen has quietly had a very solid year. He had a 2.49 ERA in 18 starts at AA, and a 1.93 ERA in 3 starts at AAA.

IMO, he earned another start with that post-1st inning performance. It is entirely possible that both Whalen and John Gant could be in the rotation as we limp toward September.

When the team sent KJ and Juan Uribe to NYM last year for two unknown pitching prospects, we all wailed and gnashed out collective teeth. It’s a perfect example of how difficult it is to immediately judge a trade that includes prospects. Not many “can’t miss” guys, and too many that come from nowhere.

I have to wonder that if the Mets had a do over, they would have re-signed Uribe? For sure they would have left Murphy.

Yep, the can’t miss verses the come out of nowhere… Ask Mike Piazza about that one.

Yep, I think Whalen will get at least one more turn, why wouldn’t he? Sure, not a flame thrower but he located pretty well after he got past the first inning.

Jim Johnson looks a good as I have ever seen him pitch. Dude has some serious late breaking “stuff”. Cabrera continues to impress too. While some guys have been able to hit his 100 mph fastball, others have not. At least he in not walking the ballpark every time out. Something many high heat guys have a problem with.

    Seemingly random thought…

It is now fairly well known that the Braves had talks with Milly about Ryan Braun before making the deal for Matt Kemp. I wonder if they could revisit those talks in the offseason? Apparently $$ was the sticking point in those talks.

I have heard Coppy on more than one post-deadline radio interview stating that the team fully intends to compete in 2017, and that they will be very active between now and the beginning of next season to accomplish that goal. And he reiterated that they will have $$ to spend. Obviously $$ can be spent on trade acquisitions as easily as FA’s.

If you look at what the team has done and is doing from a pure business standpoint, spending $$ to go all in next season makes alot of sense. They will be totally invested in bringing fans not only to the new ballpark, but to the new venues around it as well. It’s a vested interest that drives itself… more $$ into the team will aid winning -> winning brings more fans -> more fans bring more $$ to The Battery Atlanta -> more $$ to The Battery Atlanta means more $$ to spend on the team, and so on and so on…

What Coppy means about spending $$ this offseason is the business equivalent of priming the pump.

So back to our pitching woes…

Just as Aaron Blair was regaining his top prospect form, he sprains his knee ina bullpen session. Add to that the recent disabling of Manny Banuelos (shoulder), Casey Kelly (back), to go with Julio, John Gant and WillyP, we are on pitching fumes.

Currently, the best in-house candidate to make Saturday’s start in St. Louis is 35-year-old Roberto Hernandez – fka Fausto Carmona – who is 0-2 w/ 5.52 ERA and a 1.636 WHIP in 3 starts at AAA. He’s not been very good and he’s not on the 40-man roster.

    That’s a bad option, y’all.

In case you were wonder, Sean Newcomb pitched last night, and Lucas Sims started the night before.

Max Povse is scheduled to start tonight’s game for Mississippi. He’s 4-0 w/ 2.97 ERA in 5 starts at AA since his promotion from A+ Carolina. He’s a 22-year-old RH, stands 6’8″ tall and throws a downhill 92-93 mph fastball that occasionally jumps to 95-96. Reportedly it doesn’t have alot of movement, but the downhill plane induces alot of ground balls. he also has a good changeup and a big ol’ classic “Uncle Charlie” slow curve.

He might be the best option remaining in the minors, but he isn’t on the 40-man roster and is targeted for a 2018 arrival.

Dang, y’all. I don’t see any good options at all unless they can go out and find an arm in the next 24 hours. And if someone is that available, how good an option is that? Not good.

    Were screwed.

Maybe Jeff Francoeur needs to chart tonight’s game. 😉

Remember Brian Matusz? Of course not. He was briefly traded to the Braves from BAL earlier this season along with a draft pick (shocker) for a couple of our minor league pitchers. We immediately DFA’d him then released him, where he signed a minor league deal with CHC.

Well, the Cubbies just released him a couple days ago after calling him up to make 1 start. It wasn’t very good, as he gave up a pair of 3 run homers in 3 innings.

Anyway, he’s out there. Not great, but an arm. And a LH arm, too. Maybe we could keep him around for a couple of starts until John Gant is ready. Wouldn’t cost much.

I think the Braves will bring up Hernandez if they don’t sign someone like Lohse off the scrap heap. He would be a real risk given that the Braves have not had any opportunity what so ever to work with him. Either way, the bullpen is going to be used up. At this point, methinks Snit would be thrilled to get 5 innings out of whoever it is.

In the meantime. the Braves have two games to play before they cross that bridge.

Did use guys catch the later part of the game with all the pitching talk betwixt and between Glavine, Chip, and Joe? Really interesting stuff….
Glavine talked about how in rookie ball he had a sore arm, and how after he mentioned it, he met with Johnny Sain and Johnny said he was going to throw every day for 10 days in a row. What? Said Tommy, (more or less) he went on to explain (after Chip asked what kind of throwing) not off a mound, not long throwing, but…throwing none the less.
He said when he got up to the bigs, (I think-or when Bobby and Leo took over) Leo said they would throw twice between starts…again, to Tommy it seemed counter intuitive , but he said it made sense after he did it, and how it really helped with his feel for pitches…something that he said most pitchers today would not understand…feel for pitches….a lot more stuff (that you all may have heard about too if everyone stayed up) about pitch counts, how too many pitchers throw with max effort….they were talking like it was a 11-1 blowout, not a fairly close game…a transcription would be fun to read 😉

Yes Ber, I thought it to be very interesting and quite unusual given that the game was still close. Sort of like watching ESPN, but different in they actually knew what they were talking about.

I remember when Leo swapped placed with Bruce Del Canton as the Braves pitching coach. Leo was very big on throwing a lot to build up arm strength. I thought Glavin’s comment about how do you train for running? By running… So why should pitching be any different?

I remember when I went to work for the Evil Empire and they were very big on “work hardening” I other words, your body has to get use to the job you are doing. You walk a lot in your job, your legs get stronger, you lift a lot, your back gets stronger.

I think too much emphasis today is on velocity and not enough on how to pitch. I think it is why pitchers don’t last very long anymore.

I heard the convo also, and was completely mesmerized. So interesting!! I’ve also read Leo’s book, and he completely advocates throwing more often, but with less effort. he always had his pitchers throwing at 90% effort.

And how many pitchers did Leo lose to arm injuries?

    Exactly.

I remember when if a pitcher could get his fastball into the 90’s, he was considered a flamethrower. These days a guy wouldn’t get drafted if he didn’t touch 90.

One final word about last night’s game, specifically, Adonis Garcia. I’m impressed, don’t ever say he doesn’t care. he has exceeded my expectations by a lot. He is not the most gifted player on the team but he may well have the biggest heart. Yes, he fails to make every play but he at least tries to make every play, never takes an at bat off, plays well above his talent level. Wants to be a better player and it shows.

The catch he made last night is not typically one made by a team that is 26 games out of first place and was officially done for by April 15th. Yet, he made one of the most courageous plays I have ever seen by an Atlanta player. I don’t think anyone would have faulted him for pulling up on a ball two rows deep in the stands. That said, even the St Louis fans gave him an ovation for a great play.

Now, if Snit has the gonads, I would sit Freddie Freeman sit for a couple of games to get his head back on straight because it sure isn’t at the plate right now. Maybe he will take some inspiration from Adonis, probably not…

Allows Crvenka to play for a team which has a shot at the play offs. Not bad for guy who was picked up off the scrap heap of the Independent Leagues.

Gil, I sure hope that Adonis will be the spark plug that will show the rest of the team how it’s done. They are so lost. They need cohesion.

Roberto has to feel good about one thing, They did not give him a number more fitting a tackle… 32 is a good pitcher’s number… Give us six good innings and wait for the phone call for the trade offers Coppy…
