#155: Four Down, Two To Go

Gil Mechanicsville, VA

So, the Non-Waiver trade deadline has come and gone and no big news out of Atlanta. John Coppoletta said while some interest was expressed on players like reliever Jim Johnson and outfielders Nick Markakis and Ender Inciarte, no one was willing to meet the Braves’ asking price. Well, I can live with that. Those players will still be available during the hot stove season to teams looking to add pieces. As it was, their was only a small number of teams looking to add pieces for the play-off push and other than Jim Johnson, no one really had a lot of value.

Matt Kemp

Matt Kemp

This week the Braves did make a trade for a player who perhaps is on the downward side of his career in Matt Kemp but a guy who still shows more power than anyone other than perhaps Freddie Freeman. A lot of teams would not have wanted to add a player like Kemp but for Atlanta, he makes tremendous sense. He is a right handed bat who can protect lefty hitting Freddie Freeman and slot nicely between Freddie and Nick Markakis. While his defensive numbers are not that great, he could still play right field in place of Markakis or left. As far as left fielders go, I doubt his defense rates below that of other players who have been regulated to the off field of baseball.

Oliverez

Oliverez

Perhaps the biggest upside is moving the hugely disappointing Hector Olivera off the Braves payroll. While it has been widely rumored that Olivera will be DFAed by San Diego, it is not official and I suspect the Padres would simply allow him to pass through waivers and then play him in Triple A, or not. It’s no longer the Braves’ concern as to where the Cuban-born exile will play. I guess the real question is if any of the talent evaluators who pushed for the acquisition of Olivera are still on the Braves payroll or can their opinions be trusted?

So, back to what we can look forward to short term. The Braves hope that the addition of Kemp will increase the run production against the lefthanded pitching have had such a problem with this season. While not of the same talent level of a Cespedes, at least he is a bigger power threat than most everyone else who has played in the Atlanta outfield this season. Tyler Flowers is expected to return soon and also add some power to the line up.

I doubt Mallex Smith will return prior to the September call ups. For now, the Braves biggest problem seems to be who will fill the roster as starting pitchers. Coppy flipped Lucas Harrell to the Rangers so look for Gant to fill his spot as soon as he returns to full health. Perhaps Aaron Blair will return after his stint in Triple A. Even “utility” pitcher, Joel De La Cruz could fill in as a five starter. As it is, I expect the Braves will continue to take their lumps. The schedule is filled with the rest of the NL East rivals in the near future. The Marlins are much improved since we saw the last and both they and the Mets will try to use the Braves as a stepping stone to at least a play-off berth. The Nationals are still the class of the division and August and September is when they have normally played their best baseball.

At least perhaps we are not out of spring training for this team.

Great opine, Gil! Thank you very much! I know you haven’t felt well.

Okay, I’ll admit it, I gave the Braves zero chance to win last night. Scraping the bottom of the pitching barrel in Roberto Hernandez against a guy who has been St. Louis’ winningest pitcher this season.

Shows how much I know. Hernandez pitched like the second coming of Lois Tiant. That and the Braves hit like it was 1995… Wheeeeee! That is fun, let’s do it again today fellows…

Folks, I could get real use to this team. I’m not exactly sure what happen to the heretofore worst team in baseball but I like it.

On that note, anyone else notice the strong resemblance in Adonis’ recent style of play and that of his mentor Terry Pendleton? He used to use the same spin move at third. Same body type too. While Adonis is not yet Gold Glove caliber, he sure is head and shoulders above his former self, just saying.

Folty had a nice game today too, just an observation but after Ender save two runs in the first inning, it was like he found himself. Just night and day difference in his demeanor on the mound.

Two other high points today, Ian Kohl and Jim Johnson. Just superb. Now, they are off to the town that made Schlitz beer famous. 🙂 That and Lavern & Shirley…

My synopsis of the weekend, and I’ll try to be brief no matter how challenging that is for me.

We opined earlier that 1 big bat for the middle of the lineup could transform the whole thing. Ender Inciarte said as much in a post game interview yesterday when asked why the Braves are suddenly scoring runs.

Adonis!! Dadgum, son. You are playing like a real major leaguer! Proof that you can’t judge a Cuban by his cover.

I almost feel I should apologize to Roberto Hernandez. He hung in and gave the team a chance to win. Still, he gave up 3 ER and 6 H over just 5 IP. That would have been enough to bury this team earlier in the season.

We also opined that at some point Folty had to prove as mentally tough as he is physically tough. The phrase “turned the corner” is overused, yet seems somewhat appropriate here. As Joe Simpson said, Folty took a big step forward in his development yesterday.

And top to bottom it appears that these guys are really fighting and scrapping for respectability. Well… they’re beginning to get it, at least from me.

3 guys who are contributing with a hot bat or arm: Nick Markakis, Erick Aybar, and Jim Johnson. Each is red hot at a good time. Each should pass cleanly through waivers (if they haven’t already.) Aybar may have actually played himself into trade position.

I got to thinking about this, too.

If Coppy can trade Markakis and Aybar, then Matt Kemp can slide over to RF, and Jace Peterson could move out to LF, leaving the 2 middle infield positions wide open.

    Just sayin’…

Excellent points all Vee, and do not feel the need to be brief, we get paid by the word around here. 🙂

As for trades etc. I would just as soon leave Kemp in left field. That is the spot he has digressed to.

I was surprised that Markais and Jim Johnson did not relocate at the trade deadline but perhaps Coppy is just biding his time on those two. No need to give them away. Money is not an issue with Johnson and Markakis, well, Baltimore will call soon enough.

Speaking of trades, hasn’t LuCroy taken to Texas like a duck to water? Dude is seriously burning it up down there.

Just as well the Braves won’t have to face him this week.

True that Hernandez gave up three earned, proof it is not always how you pitch but when too. Still, he was a lot better than anyone really expected. Proof you don’t have to throw 98mph to get people out. Although that helps…

Braves picked up another off the waiver pile in Oriole reject 29 yo Chaz Roe. Braves track record on these guys has been pretty good so far. We’ll see…

So, I guess the real question now is have the Braves turned the corner as a team? The Brewers are not having a great year either but they own the Pirates and play tough at home. Then their are the Nats who always seem to wake up in August and September. Win those two up coming series and the rest of the league will screaming to break up the Braves…

By the way, congratulations are in order for the Nippon Express for attaining his 3000th hit yesterday. Always like the guy and the way he played the game.

The Snakes released Josh Collmenter yesterday. At this point, signing him would cost only the proverbial drop in the bucket. I see no downside. Snap him up, send him to Gwinnett and stretch him out again. Seems a no-brainer.

I agree VOX, Unless he is injured or even if he is, maybe an even better reason to snap him up if it’s repairable, to add him to the assembly line. What is there to lose? Sign him to a minor league contract and stock pile him, I know if I were Collmenter, I would jump at the chance. Where else besides with the Braves would he get a clearer shot at redemption?

Perhaps whoever reads our blog who is in the front office will hear our cries.

So what would be the cost? Two months of major league minimum, or less? I don’t know what the rules are if a player signs a minor league deal versus a major league contract.

Collmenter has complained of shoulder tightness/soreness… Really depends on what the problem is? Rotator cuff or labrum? One is worse than the other, neither is good for a major league pitcher. Of course there are other ailments which could account for his problems. Doesn’t he throw over the top? To me the absolute hardest on the shoulder pitching motion.

Just in case they do: DO NOT TRADE FOR BRIAN MCCANN!!

Tyler Flowers will be back this week. It’s as good as trading for a catcher, and you don’t have to give up any prospects or take on millions in payroll.

Flowers’ slash line for 2016: .253/.343/.425
    McCann’s slash line for 2016: .231/.330/.413

    That math ain’t hard.

And just for grins and giggles…
Anthony Recker’s slash line this year at the ML level: .371/.439/.514

I think the kid has filled in admirably.

Flowers has been better than I expected this season, and AJ has improved since earlier in the year when he seemed to be more blind than the Democrat voting base.

I agree that I’d prefer to have Recker on the team as a backup to TFlow, but the problem is that they both hit RH. And I think they’ll give AJP the opportunity to finish out the season and then retire into the sunset. My guess is that Recker will be back on Sept. 1.

As for 2017, the catching position is likely to look completely different. I’m expecting the team to go hard after a catcher in FA.

    Picture this:

The Braves go after a 30-year-old Free Agent for a position of need. The guy has put together some pretty impressive years in Baltimore and has exhibited steady hitting and moderate power. The O’s would like to keep him, but they aren’t willing to pony up what the Braves will offer. Since coming back from injury and surgery, he’s hitting fairly well, but his power has diminished a bit. He’s hoping for it to return completely with another season of recovery under his belt.

    Sound familiar?

No, not Nick Markakis… Matt Wieters.

When 2017 opens, Wieters will be a full 18 months removed from TJ surgery. If he can indeed get back to being the hitter he was from 2011-2013, when he averaged 22 HR’s, he’ll easily be the top catcher on the FA market.

But will be be fully back? I would like to just way “yes”. But I said “yes” about Nick last year, so I’m understandably a little leery.

Baltimore may still pony up for Wieters and if they and The Nats re-sign their guys…then what?
Wieters as I pointed out on the previous blog…has missed a lot of games the last few years…I know about the TJ, but they still rest him…a lot…
How much to you pay a catcher that plays 100-110 games?

He’s a shell of his former self. I’d rather have Flowers, to be perfectly honest.

As for Ramos, he’s only had one healthy season, being this one. I suppose if you’re gonna have one, make it your walk season, right? For me, I don’t want anything to do with him. Too risky.

Wieters is still probably the best of the FA crop, but it isn’t a particularly deep crop to pick from. Coppy could always go the trade route. I still like SD’s Derek Norris. I know he’s had a down year, but his career numbers are very good.

I’ll not get too deep in the weeds on the possibilities of McCann’s return to the Braves. This season he was playing hurt early. My only real knock on him was he would wear down by the first of August each season. Body type? Lack of conditioning? Georgia heat? All could cause it but it was telling each season that when he was needed most, he could not answer the bell.

He is a great clubhouse guy from what I read but you don’t need a roster full of clubhouse guys. You need a couple of clubhouse guys and a bunch of talent… Young talent who are hungry. It is quite a balancing act for any franchise.

A still, there will be only one team out of thirty who the press believe had a successful season… Quick.. how many second place finishers of the Kentucky Derby can you name? I rest my case.

I like Wieters but remember where he plays. Move the fences in about twenty feet all around Turner Field and there would be a lot of boppers on the team.

It’s so funny how many folks always complain about how boring soccer is because there is little scoring… I have a solution for that, make the goals bigger… Problem solved.

What I don’t like is all the phony injuries in soccer… At least in football, when a guy is injured, he is likely unconscious, or wishes he were.

Not too many phony injuries in baseball either. Oh, there are some but those usually turn into real ones if the opposing team finds out. Other than a particular hitter getting “pitcher’s flu” …

The Braves continue to play like a real MLB team. Have they “turned the corner” as a team? Maybe. Time will continue to write that narrative.

But here’s the thing… the lineup is hitting, and hitting in timely spots. They’re taking extra bases. They’re going 1st to 3rd. They’re doing the things to make stuff happen.

And the bullpen is killin’ it.

Rob Whalen had some wicked stuff working last night too. Take away a couple of mistakes and he was nearly unhittable. But those are the kind of mistakes you’d expect from a kid that started the year in AA and who is making just his 2nd ML start.

But I’ll tell ya… he impresses me alot. I thought John Gant was the jewel of that deal, but Whalen might prove himself to be. Or perhaps both. Wouldn’t that just be a kick?

There’s nothing I’d like better than to roll into Citi Field in September with the Mets fighting for a Wild Card spot, and to have both Whalen and Gant beat them in the same series. Wouldn’t that just be sweet?

The dimensions in SunTrust park will be a little different.

The Ted compared to SunTrust Park:
    LF corner: 335, 335
    LCenter: 380, 375
    Center: 400, 400
    RCenter: 390, 375
    RF corner: 330, 325

Where the wall at Turner Field curves from pole to pole, SunTrust Park uses mostly straight lines, going from point-to-point. There should be a little more OF depth in LF, a little less from left-center to C, and noticeably less in RF, but Turner Field’s consistent wall height is gone. It’s about 6′ in LF, 8’8″ in CF and a fun 16′ in RF.

Yes, you eliminate the first third of the season and the Braves are much less odorous as a team.

Now, about last night. Whalen looked sharp. Yes, he gave up a two run dinger but Miller’s Park gives up more homers than Great American or The Bank Vault in Phillie. I was also impressed with the kid pitching for the Brewers. He looks like he should still be playing HS ball.

Anyway, fun game and Freddie Freeman had one of the craziest slides I’v ever seen. Of course Buster Posey had a one point landing on his nose gear last night too but that was the undercard game for me.

Chris Carter hit a ball last night that I thought for sure was a homerun off of Cabrera in the eight inning. It had the height, was about a foot shy of the fense however.

And Jim Johnson… How did that guy not get picked up by any team at the trade deadline? Great game… Nice to see the power getting turned back on for the Braves. Yes, I love the running game but I love winning more….

So, just for fun, because that’s how I roll, I did a little rough math (because I could not find my calculator) to figure out how well the Braves needed to play to finish the season at .500… They have fifty games left in the season, that means they have to win 38 out of 50 games to end up 81 and 81 and somewhere mid pack for draft picks next year. That is .750 ball folks…

I think I need to revise my goals for this team and say okay, lets take some baby steps and play .500 ball the rest of the season. Given that they are playing with a starting pitching staff on which a team like the Nationals would still have toiling in AA for the most part and Julio would be a number 4, that is a real boost.

It makes the Matt Kemp trade one that makes Coppy look like a magician, aside from the fact that two of the Braves current starters were stolen from the Mets who could really use one of them right now… Baseball is such a funny game. One where failing less often is the key to success because even the best hitters fail 3/4ths of the time. Failing only 70% of the time over a career will land you in the Hall of Fame… Amazing…

So back to the Braves and the final 50 games. The Braves are playing for pride right now, there is little else to strive for. Resisting the temptation to just phone it in a plan for their winter vacations.

For the average Braves fan like myself, it’s watching this team get better. We know quite a few of the guys on the current roster won’t be on this team next season but some will. Like the sage of Wall Street once said, “it’s not how much you make, it is the direction of your income”. Baseball is like that, it’s not what you did yesterday that counts but what you will produce going forward.

There are rumors bubbling (not quite swirling) that NYM has put in a waiver claim on JimmyJohn. It is known that the claim was on a late inning reliever. It’s only speculated that it’s JJ.

It is also known that they are putting Travis d’Arnaud through waivers. If that dude could stay healthy, he’d be a nice young C to throw to for a few years. Health is the big key there, though.

I would hate to face Johnson if I were an opposing hitter. I think he would be a much better closer than Familia but either as the guy in the eight or ninth, he would add value to the Mets pen. That said, the Braves won’t give him up cheap. Sure, he can be had but it is going to cost whoever wants him. At this point, Johnson’s salary is a non issue and he is an excellent role model for the young guys in the Braves pen.

With Visciano coming back and the emergence of Cabrera whom I believe will continue to grow as a lat innings guy, Johnson is expendable for the Braves but Coppy does not feel the need to give him away like he did last summer to the Dodgers. Of course he stunk up the place for the Dodgers but I still think that was a combination of the mound and for Johnson still trying to find himself.

He is pushing a fastball that touches 95 mph and has a wicked change up. Travis d’Arnaud was a highly touted prospect when the Mets traded Toronto for him. You are right VOX, health is a key for him. Not a lot of power but a good defensive catcher. I think Johnson would cost more than just a catcher.

While I am at it, a point to make about catchers. I think at this point it is very important for the Braves young staff to have a backstop they feel they can trust and on who’s judgement they can depend upon. Like Jenkins said in his interview with DOB, when he has to think too much, he messes up. Baseball is a game where you need to let the manager do the thinking and just do. Don’t be thinking about your arm slot or where your hands need to be. You just need to do.

Speaking of bullpen, has anyone noticed that Texas has sent Dario Alvarez and his 10.80 ERA in 3 appearances down to AAA? Likewise Miami has sent Hunter Cervenka and his 27.00 ERA in 2 appearances down to AAA as well?

Still, the los Bravos have two more games to play with the Brew Crew. Dare we believe they good guys can at least split the last two?

And on Kemp… why do I feel like every fly ball to him is an adventure? Could it be the constant circling under the ball that make me feel that way? Still, I’m glad the Braves picked him up, he appears to have helped settled the line up. This year’s Sid Bream maybe? Similar wheels I think..

He did not pitch a bad game, the home run he gave up was the killer but at least it wasn’t a cheapee. The first one Freddie hit was impressive too. Unfortunately, the second one in the eight was a solo shot. The Braves made it close and the pen held them but it was a night there was just too much to overcome.

I can live with Jimmy John delivering for the Braves the rest of the season. He gets paid the same no matter where he pitches and if he continues his good work, he will make more somewhere next year if not with the Braves.

The Braves should have offered ManBam and Adonis… That would have been about right.

The Yankees don’t care, they make enough to pay McCann’s salary in beer sales in one night. I would not mind having McCann back in Atlanta but not at too great an expense and not with the expectation he will hit 25 home runs and drive in 100 runs. He would be an improvement over A.J. but I agree that platooned with Flowers he would not be worn down and if not relying upon him for run production, he would be a good addition.

Folty and Ender? Either would yield a greater return and both are cheap and controllable right now. I think Hernandez showed he is not really ready to be a fixture in the Braves rotation right now. Today’s game was over pretty quickly but I hung with it. SIGH!

I think Hernandez showed he is not really ready to be a fixture in the Braves rotation right now.

He never was. He was the beneficiary of alot of runs in his first start. (Don’t you know Julio is jealous of all the run support?)

He is what’s known as “filler”. As soon as a real starter is ready to return from the DL – John Gant of Julio – Hernandez Carmona is likely DFA’d.

Hey… Sean Newcomb had another stellar start in AA last night. Let’s give him a shot. What’s it gonna hurt? And it’d give the Braves a LH in the rotation. What a novel idea!!

Josh Jackson of MiLB.com on Sean Newcomb:

Atlanta’s top pitching prospect scattered two hits and three walks while striking out eight over six innings in Double-A Mississippi’s 2-0 shutout at Jacksonville on Thursday.

It was the third straight dominant outing for Newcomb. The 23-year-old left-hander allowed two runs and fanned 25 over his last 17 2/3 innings. In his previous start, he struck out a season-high 10, one shy of his career high. His hot streak makes him 6-7 with a 4.04 ERA through 23 Double-A starts this year, despite a run in which that number ballooned to 4.79 by mid-July.

He struggled early with his command, but has really honed it in recently allowing him to begin pitching to his real potential. Amazing what you can do when you throw strikes.

Rob Whalen’s scouting report…Did I miss some pitches above 90 MPH? I mean, did you guys see pitches 93-94????
Whalen has a solid inning-grinding repertoire with a 92-94 MPH four-seam fastball that he uses infrequently, a sinker that sits around 89-92 that is his primary pitch, a tremendously effective slider that has some arm side run, a 12-6 curve ball, and a change up that sits in the 83-85 mph range. Last year’s Mets prospect report by Baseball America listed Whalen’s curve ball as the best in the Mets system, but Whalen has stated in an interview that it was likely the slider they were referring to, not his curve.

Ber, I still believe late movement is the best tool any pitcher can have in his repertoire. Those 98 mph laser balls get hit a long way by major league batters. The average person cannot even see a 98 mph pitch, much less hit one but MLB players are not average.

Most hitters and apparently a lot of umpire cannot really track the last 10 feet of the flight of a baseball thrown by a big league pitcher. The hardest I was ever able to throw a baseball was 55 mph… what a difference?

Whalen is not a Roger Clemons but more of a Tom Glavin. Not that he will ever be a good as Glavin but in terms of velocity. My biggest complaint is pitchers who are afraid to throw strikes, Greg Maddux was the only guy I ever saw who could consistently throw it on the black any time he wanted. It was the slap hitters who gave him trouble.

Anyway, I think Whalen will be a great number four guy in a rotation. He’s still a pup though…

I think that’s the one thing with crafty pitchers….folks with 87-90 MPH…people don’t have to respect a pitch getting past them…so they can just look for a pitch where they like ’em…and why Gil has to mention a long since retired pitcher that was successful throwing “slow” 😉

As for Kubitza? why not… He’s closer to the major league than a lot of other guys and I don’t expect to see Gordon Beckham in an Atlanta Uni next season. The Braves saw something in him when they first drafted him so maybe they think they can fix whatever is wrong with him.

The bring up Jason Hursh, the Braves first round draft pick in 2013, and Akeel Morris, another young right hander being promoted from AA Mississippi.

I wonder if the Braves are stock piling frequent flyer miles as the pitching merry go round continues this season.

While the position player line up appears to have stabilized a bit, the pitching situation is a bit like “wheel of Fortune”. For sure, the guys in the Braves’ system cannot complain about a lack of opportunity to play in the big leagues.

Throw strikes, get outs and you will find yourself with a seat on the team plane. Walks and homers, you are going to get a seat on a different plane. Down to lonesome town…

So, it’s the top of the ninth and the Washington announcers are not sure what inning they are in. I guess they are stunned that the lowly Bravos are hitting the long ball tonight. To be honest, I am a little stunned myself, but a happy stunned… 🙂

Then Kemp showed up… Matt Kemp has not exactly torn the cover off the ball but Freddie sure has since his arrival. Is Freddie really getting better pitches to hit or does Freddie think he is getting better pitches to hit? Maybe both, I don’t know, I am not so much a stat cast geek that I feel the need to research it. Just seems so…

I looked into the DraftKing scene. Now I see why the Sabermatitions are so into it. It’s not about wins and losses or defense. It’s all about strike outs and homeruns. Watching the recap of “Play’s of the Week” on MLB and surprised that Adonis’ tumbling catch into the seats was not mentioned. Perhaps what is lost on most folks was not that he made the catch, it is the fact that he made the attempt for a team which id 22 games out of first and 30 some games under .500, that is leaving it all on the field when you would not be faulted for pulling up short.

I have much more respect for him after this season.

On Aybar getting thrown out at third last night, hey, he was safe, just not enough to convince the replay officials to show up the on field umpire and reverse an out call. Like Freddie Freeman said, what do they have to lose in going for it?

To me, baseball and football and just about every other sport has evolved to give the bookies ie Mafia, something to bet on. Honestly, how many folks show up at the horse races because they like to watch them run?

So, today the gNats showed everyone why they are in first place and the Braves are in last. They are playing a bunch of guys (pitchers included) who are just not up to snuff by major league standards but they have to learn somewhere and the Braves don’t have many other options.

And what of Trea Turner? think he is sad to see the Braves leave town? That’s ok, he will be at Turner Field next week end.

Freddie Free looks to be back on track. Good thing huh? I was getting worried..

I saw Trea Turner earlier this year in a AAA game. He was a man among boys. And it was obvious. The only reason he was still in AAA was to delay his clock and prevent him from being a Super 2 guy.

I’ll try and recap the weekend and keep it brief.

ManBan gone. Yes, it was a risk worth taking. Not all work out. Doesn’t look like he’ll ever return to 100%. Might as well cut bait now.

3B Kyle Kubitza was traded to LAA for LHP Ricardo Sanchez back in January 2015. At the time, he was our #10 prospect. That said, our farm system was so bad that Todd Cunningham was in the Top 10. Sanchez is still really young (19) and is our #26 prospect in a system filled with pitching prospects. Good fastball; good curve. Still a couple of years away from making any impact. And we basically got him for free now that Kubitza is back on a bargain deal. Oh… and Kubitza is raking at Gwinnett and could easily be a September callup.

The DFA of Hernandez/Carmona was an easy call. He would not have survived the return of Julio or Gant anyway.

Rob Whalen does have ML potential. He just needs more seasoning. Remember, he only had a handful of AAA starts.

Down at AA, Dustin Peterson continues his breakout season. At some point, people need to take notice and consider him a bona fide ML prospect.

Another AA prospect, LHP Sean Newcomb, has shown why he is the top pitching prospect in a system full of prime pitching prospects. Over his last 3 starts, he has displayed his considerable top-of-the rotation tools. In 17 2/3 IP, he’s allowed just 2 runs while K’ing 25. He’s a legit contender for a rotation spot in 2017.

Oh yeah. We played some games.

I does not surprise me that Newcomb had taken a while to come around. That is why they start out in the minors is to learn how what they do best is repeated.

Mallex who? Oh yeah, the kid who will be playing center field next season. I think Enders will slot over to right after Markskis is traded. While I like both Enders and Nick, it is the money which will be moved and Nick will hit 25 homeruns playing in a small American League park.

Too bad Aybar didn’t play the first half of the season like he is playing now, he could have been traded for, well, anything…

one out of three? some sort of moral victory I guess all things considered.

Trea Turner is going to have people in DC saying Bryce who? Well, maybe not but would love to have a kid like that, maybe we already do in Ozzie or Dansby…

The drubbing the Braves took yesterday would have been softened by a come from behind victory Saturday night but that’s baseball, still another number add to the loss column.

All of us clamoring to see The Dansby and Ozzie Show this year might want to cool our jets a little. I’m reading that with the AA team seeing tremendous success and flying into the playoffs with alot of talent hitting on all cylinders, the organization wants them to experience a successful playoff run which could easily play into late-September.

They are currently 6 games up in their division for the second half and are 9-1 over their last 10 games.

Of course you are absolutely right Vee, no need to rush them, it is always a good omen when your minor league club start winning. It establishes a winning attitude with the players.

besides, it is not a good idea to become too attached to any player on the minor league roster. They can disappear PDQ in a trade.

Have we also not learned the lessons of buying in too deeply in the hype of the club’s PR department. Wasn’t Wilson Betemit the heir apparent to Chipper Jones? Still, it’s better to have young arms who are able to throw strikes than to have those who cannot.

I don’t really know what is harder, to win a Super Bowl or win a World Series. So many things can happen on the way to the forum.

And what of Daniel Murphy? Do you think if the Mets had it all to do over again, they would have ponied up the bucks, bit the bullet and signed Murphy for whatever ridiculous amount his agent was asking? For a team which was lacking offense, and his was the only offense the team had last season, it seemed a no brainer to me. I guess Barry Madoff hurt the Mets more than we will ever know.

On Rob Whalen… I don’t think he is a bad pitcher. I think he is a young pitcher. How would you feel if we had James Shields on the staff with his gargantuan ERA? Of course he has a track record but it is getting more and more tarnished every day. Leads me to believe he is playing injured…

Tough news for the Marlins with Stanton going down with a grade 3 groin pull. Good thing he is not a race horse, he would be headed for the glue factory for sure. Of course they could use him for baseball covers but I digress.

Prince Fielder is another example of how quickly it can all be over. I hope he invested well. It amazes me how someone can earn so much money and have nothing to show for it but a large IRS tax bill. Perhaps that should be one of the mandatory classes they teach in rookie school. Oh well, they would probably sleep through that too.

Speaking of the Marlins’ Mike, er… Giancarlo Stanton:

The highest paid player in the game having signed the inconceivable 13 yr/$325M (’15-’27) deal, has only played over 125 G in a season twice in his career. Averaging just over 115 per season. That’s roughly 70% of the games his team hits the field for.

Hey, it’s good part time work if you can get it.

They could always move him into the catchers’s position. 115 games a season is about right for that position. Even so, his contract is really back loaded so no biggie for Loria and the Marlins. Likely he will have sold the team by the time the big money kicks in.

The only thing Giancarlo can do is ask Ithero to become his personal trainer so he can master all those stretching exercises needed to allow him to stay healthy.

IF Mike Aviles: 35-year-old way past his prime. Likely included simply to help balance some $$. Consider that the Tigers preferred Aybar over him. Don’t be surprised if he’s DFA’d before ever putting on a uni. After all, a roster spot has to be created for Dansby.

Catcher Kade Scivicque: He was the Tigers’ #20 prospect in a farm system ranked pretty low. In fact, if I read correctly, they recently released their #21 prospect. But for the sake of “doing my job”, here are the particulars…

23-years-old out of LSU. He was their 4th round pick last year. He has been playing on their A+ team, and will be assigned to our A+ Carolina Mudcats. His slash line is .282/.325/.380 w/ 6 HR.

    From Baseball Prospectus:
    ETA: 2019
+Hit grade 30. Hits from a tall, slightly open stance; leg kick for timing; ok hands; below-average bat speed; lacks pitch recognition skills; some contact ability; ok balance; tends to lunge over the plate.
+Power grade 40. Below-average raw power; lacks bat speed for more; plays at full utility; fair amount of gap-to-gap but enough strength for future HRs.
+Baserunning/Speed grade 20. Bottom of the scale runner; doesn’t look athletic running; 4.60 H-1B; won’t ever get a greenlight.
+Glove grade 45. Fair hands and receives okay; tends to be lazy when blocking pitches; has trouble blocking side to side; kills pace of pitchers with lobbed balls after a pitch; below average at present; could improve a tad.
+Arm grade 50. Fair arm strength; have most throws clocked between 1.96-2.05; fair accuracy.
+Overall: Scivique is not going to provide a lot offensively, nor does he have the defensive skills of to provide value as a defensive player. He competes and helps a team at the upper levels.

In other words, he’s an “organizational player” to provide depth in the minor leagues at a position where there was very little depth.

All that said, we got more than a bag of balls for Aybar, and the path has been cleared for Dansby to start his run here. So it’s a big win for ATL.

I think the roster spot for Dansby will be created by Aybar going to Detroit…

There is a flurry of moves on the way for our Los Barves. Viz made his 2nd appearance in 2 days yesterday, and if there is no reported effects today, he could be activated as early as tomorrow. Likewise, Flowers appears ready to be activated any time now. And Julio will make a scheduled start on Friday. And while Rob Whalen will start tomorrow, John Gant should return to that slot by it’s next rotation on Aug. 23.

So there will be a major roster shakeup coming.

Somebody has to move for Dansby to come on board. Will it be Aviles? Seems likely, but the team has been playing with a short bench for most of the season. Could they send down a pitcher? I doubt it. Unless there is a trade worked out for Beckham, Aviles is probably the odd man out before he’s even in.

There are any number of relievers that could be sent down to accommodate Vizzy. It all depends on if they want to keep the young ones up or not. They could also work out a trade of a guy like Jose Ramirez. You never know with Coppy. But one of the young’uns like Madison Younginer or Jason Hursh could be returned to the farm. That’s the most likely outcome.

Same with Julio. It’ll be one of the relievers since Roberto Hernandez/Carmona was already sent packing from the rotation.

Alas, it almost has to be Anthony Recker that makes way for Flowers. And I don’t think he can be returned to AAA without going through waivers first since he’s already 33 with a number of years of service. And there’s no way he’d go through waivers cleanly. I don’t think there’s anyone on the bench with minor league options left to stash away until Sept. 1. There are pitchers, though, so the team could actually go with a 5 man bench until Sept. 1 by DFA’ing Aviles and going with a more typical 7 man bullpen for he next 2 weeks. If they do that, look for the bullpen carousel to continue.

Next question… where will Dansby bat in the order?

I could see Snit keeping the order as is and allowing Dansby to slot into Aybar’s former #2 hole. That said, I could also see him “protecting” the rookie somewhat and stashing him toward the bottom.

I’m betting on #2. We’ll know in a few hours.

    Yeah, back in 2008…

So all and all, it looks like the Braves saved a little bit more money than if they had DFAed Aybar. It was more about clearing a spot than anything else.

Yep, I was thinking 23 was a bit old for High A ball.

I am also thinking the release of Omar Infante cleared a spot in Gwinnett for Aviles.

Oh, and there was a game last night… De La Cruz looked decent. Deep pitch counts spoiled his chance to go deep into the game. Still, about 100 pitches was about 15 more than his previous high. Erwin Santana looked really sharp. I think his PED suspension scared off more than a few possible suitors at the trade deadline. Big contract money too maybe but money never really scared off that many clubs who needed pitching. I’m surprised the Dodgers didn’t come calling.

The braves relief corps looked shaky last night. Cabrera threw over 30 pitches in the eight and only got two outs.

Ian Kroll looked sharp but the rest of the bunch reeked.

I think Heyward is a good answer. Maybe Steve Avery… It was as a pretty big deal when he got called up. He got bombed in New York but he turned it around. Maybe Huddy was close too. Texeria was suppose to carry the team when John S traded away the Braves minor league system to get him.

That said, Dansby is a one/one… Those kind of draft picks are supposed to be franchise keystones. So it is a pretty big deal.

He’s too old with too much service time to be assigned to AAA. (Infante was signed on a minor league deal.) Aviles would have to clear waivers first, thus the DFA, then he’d have to accept an outright assignment. Not sure he’d do that, since free agency is the alternative.

I was looking up FF, didn’t recall he came up for a cup of coffee in 2010 (Hit his 1st homer off of Roy Halladay, IIRC) I know we had heard a fair bit about him, but yeah JHey had so much buzz when he came up (remember how folks were worried that he hit the ball so hard that a 1st baseman could be injured by him?) There was so much talk about JHey and he hit that homer off of…Cubs starter…can picture him…Carlos Zambrano !( Yay brain, didn’t have to look him up 😆 ) even ESPN was making a big deal about it, folks like Tim K saying they would always remember that hit…
Who would have guessed it was FF that would be the much better hitter?
And Speaking of FF, the next homer he hits will be a new career high…not bad in mid August..and hitting .287, 2 points above career average…
Still seems to have quite the upper cut, but timing must be better…

Actually pitched well at AA for the Dodgers, 31 Games, 40 innings, 48 strikeouts, 3.15 ERA. Moved up to AAA, not so hot. 5 games, 5.1 innings, 14 hits 11.81 ERA….hope he can figure it out, that would be cool to see him come back as a pitcher…

I think at this point, the Braves would try to slip Recker through waivers, last night’s catcher for the Twin’s, Suzuki, has already cleared waivers and went unclaimed. I think Norris is still out there and available too. Of course they are owed more money but that does not seem to mater much any more.

I don’t see A.J. playing in Atlanta after this season. he said he would not mind finishing his career with the Twins but he may be done as a major league player. I’m not sure he has the temperament to be a coach but then again, maybe some of these kids need a D.I. type to get them on the right path.

One more point about De La Cruz… The guy definitely has “stuff”. Problem is, I don’t think the umpires can see it either.

The book is in on Frenchy. he can’t catch up to the 95 mph fastball…

Didn’t Beckham sign a two year contract? Maybe not… He has not been the same player since he got hurt and was on the DL for a month. That really set him back. Jace still has options left. Might send him down for 10 days to make room for Aviles. I don’t see the Braves dropping either d’Arnaud or Petterson at this point. Beckham seems the most expendable but still only about two weeks before rosters can expand.

I think at this point, the Braves would try to slip Recker through waivers, last night’s catcher for the Twin’s, Suzuki, has already cleared waivers and went unclaimed.

Different kind of waivers. Suzuki and Aybar and the lot have been passed through trade waivers. If a player is claimed off trade waivers, the posting team has the option of working out a trade deal with the claiming team, or pulling him back ala Jim Johnson.

Release waivers are not revocable, and any claiming team simply takes the player and his contract with no compensation to the posting team. Those are the waivers Recker would have to pass through before he could be outrighted to AAA. And even then he’d have to accept the assignment with his age and service time. Given his success this season, there’s almost a zero chance of him going unclaimed, and an even lesser chance of him accepting a minor league assignment since the alternative is free agency.

Beckham is in the same category.

Chase d’Arnaud has no minor league options left, so he would have to go through the same process.

Jace Peterson is the one guy with minor league options left. But would you take your starting 2B and stash him away for a couple weeks just for procedural purposes? I doubt he’d react very well to such a move, too.

The most seamless move to me would be to drop a pitcher – Younginer or Hursh – until Sept. 1. Heck, Ryan Weber has worn a path between Gwinnett and Atlanta. I’d stash him away.

It is known that Jeff Francoeur has passed through revocable (trade) waivers and is eligible to be swapped. I suppose that could happen, but I get the sense that the team prefers to keep his leadership here. He’s as valuable in the clubhouse as a mentor to our young players as he is on the field.

That said, if the return was right, Coppy’d send him. And of course, he’d just re-sign here in the offseason like Kelly Johnson. 😀

You beat me to it, as usual, Vee. I was thinking the last great short stop to wear number 2 was Derek Jeter. Would can only hope. And hope the Braves have enough money to keep some of these guys when the time comes.

Lots of talk on MLB this morning about the Braves calling up Dansby.

Will be interviewed by Dero tomorrow. Coppy is supposed to be on in the 2nd hour. I expect Ozzie to cut Peterson’s playing time to once or twice a week. He will be a utility guy going forward. Chase is a bubble guy to me. Great make up and a good utility guy too. Not the same power as Peterson but good bat off the bench. Still, he is not top tier talent. he is more of a Jeff Treadway kind of guy.

Third base is still wide open if you ask me even though Adonis has been a good find. He might stick around for a couple of more years but I would not be surprised to see him packaged with a pitcher for an up grade.

We can get attached to guys after a while but the majority of the players on the Braves current roster are not all star level talent.

    Yep.

Maybe more valuable than Jace since he can play anywhere on the diamond but P & C. Then again, he might could catch in a pinch. Who knows?

The fact is that together they are somewhat redundant. The difference? Chase is a RH; Jace is a LH. Only one will remain on next year’s roster as the super utility type. It could very well come down to RH vs. LH and what is needed most.

It wouldn’t surprise me much if Jace was traded, too. Like Adonis, he’d pair well with a pitching prospect to bring back a major league need.

Beckham is only here until the end of this season, so his role next year will be in another uniform.

For those keeping count of such things, Mike Aviles is signed only through the end of this season on a $2M deal. As I understand it, the Braves added some cash in the deal to DET to balance out the 2 contracts. He too has played all over the diamond. Still, it’s very telling that DET preferred Erick Aybar over him.

Aybar finally heated up to the point he as not an empty suit. Too bad he waited so long to do so, might have actually gotten some value for him. I will not be surprised if Gordon Beckham isn’t DFAed. We will see how it plays out this afternoon.

I have to think Aviles is bummed right now. Going from a team which has a shot at a play-off berth to one vying for the number one over all pick next season.

My to advice to him, don’t bother putting a down payment on a house in Atlanta unless you are going to retire there.

Gotta say I won’t either. Probably either him or Aviles. Technically, the roster spot for Dansby is open with the departure of Aybar. But you have to do something with Aviles… and that means either him or another – probably the aforementioned Beckham – must go. They are pretty redundant in the same way that d’Arnaud and Petey are.

One has to think that the delay in the official announcement of Dansby’s addition and Aviles’ status is due to Coppy working the phones to make a deal somewhere.

Yep, I was wondering who was going to fall on their sword and take one for the team. Legging out that double must have taken a toll on A.J.

I hope they saved Aviles the trouble of making the flight to Atlanta. Of course he needed to fill out his W-2s for the team’s payroll office so I guess it was deductable.

Perhaps he will sign on with another team and save the Braves about $50,000 but maybe he plays out the season in Gwinnett? Naw… never happen…

Out of curiosity, I looked up Trea Turner’s bio. He was also a first round draft pick of the Padres. If they had kept some of these guys instead of trading them away, they would have a pretty stout team now. Goes to show, you cannot short circuit the process. Of course it helps tremendously if you have good scouts finding the talent to begin with.

Jon Heyman is reporting that EOF has passed through waivers and is now eligible for a trade. Problem is, he has sucked profusely over the last… well actually all year. Coppy may actually have a harder time dealing him than he did Erick Aybar. Then again, LHP’s seem to have a surreal shelf life, even when ineffective.

So, what does this mean for the Braves? More spots opening up on the Braves pitching staff.

Did y’all hear the Hunter Cervenka is on the DL as is Harrell who was just traded to the Rangers. This game is tough on pitchers….

VOX, those were just to easy, even I could have predicted those… 🙂

Dansby not withstanding, last night revealed a lot of sloppy infield play. Even a pop foul ball that Adonis was unable to corral should have been made by the shortstop but he showed hesitancy. Just a matter of him becoming more comfortable as a field leader. If the catcher is the quarterback, the shortstop is the ( I don’t know) but he has to take charge, like the center fielder does in the outfield.

I guess the answer is the SS takes charge of any ball he can get to. I will take everyone some getting use to playing with new folks but one reason why I think Ozzie will finish the season with the big club.

Adonis is actually getting better at third. Not sure who the Braves have in mind short term other than Garcia to play third. I suspect they will review their options in the off season. I still think a catcher is a need. I guess Derek Norris is still available but the Braves are waiting for the Padres to release him.

Worried about Vizcaíno…he was missing by a ton, like something is wrong with his arm…
Bullpen is worn out…I was wondering how long it had been since a starter went more than 6 innings, and I kinda-sorta heard Chip say how long it was…some date I think in late July..no bullpen, no matter how many times you shuffle guys, can withstand that….
Reynaldo Lopez looks to be a good pitcher, but it’s funny that the first 2 games he pitched he was terrible, but against the braves he looks like a #1

  192. 198 Gil in Mechanicsville August 19, 2016 at 9:06 am

Ber, Lopez has the benefit of not worrying about giving up a run or two. That and a 98 mph rising fastball and 12-6 curve ball to keep hitters off balance, he indeed looked stout last night.

I wonder if Kemp can say on the fly ball he dropped in the first inning, “I lost it in the lack of lights”?

Never did understand the rational for the lack of back lighting in the outfield at Turner Field. You say you don’t want to obstruct the view of the Atlanta skyline and then erect a huge chopping cow and a flashing Coke bottle… DUH!

It’s a race to the bottom for the good guys. The bullpen has indeed collapsed.
I do not think any lead, if the Braves were to actually get one, would be safe. I don’t think it is for lack of trying, simply lack of talent.

from MLBTR , talking about possible rookies of the year in the A.L. Michael Fulmer, 23, debuted with the Tigers on April 29 and has since produced like one of the game’s elite starters, let alone rookies. Through his first 120 big league innings (19 starts), Fulmer has recorded an AL-leading 2.25 ERA, which he backs with an excellent ground-ball rate (50.6 percent) and a K-BB percentage (15.0) that’s above the AL average of 12.9. In his latest outing, Fulmer went on the road to throw a complete game shutout against the formidable Rangers, striking out nine and walking none.

Ok, now about Tyrell Jenkins…again, I hate to bring this up again about a starter ….but….I saw a lot of 90-91 MPH fastballs…and he gave up 8 runs tonight. We tend to think of him as some top pitching prospect, but, doing some research, I couldn’t find scouting reports, cuz…he’s not in the top 100 prospects…I did find this baseball America page from Jan of 2013…(interesting to see how many great prospects the Cards had, even after losing , as the GM of the Cards said, their top hitting prospect since Fat Albert when Oscar Taveras died)

Scouting Report: Jenkins has a long, lithe frame that made him a successful quarterback and sprinter in high school. It also creates the leverage for 93-96 mph fastballs and the strength to maintain velocity throughout his starts. He’ll develop more power as he matures and more command as he tames his delivery. He has ditched an exaggerated leg kick and has sought to settle on more fluid mechanics that he can repeat. Jenkins gets depth on his curveball with an over-the-top arm slot that scouts don’t love and he doesn’t always throw it with enough power. He’s developing a solid changeup.

    http://www.baseballamerica.com/online/prospects/rankings/organization-top-10-prospects/2013/2614550.html

So, again I wonder, just like with Whalen, what happened to their fastballs? Don’t get me wrong,
I think kids will blow out their arms throwing 98 all the time….like Folty does…but, if you can get it up to 93-95 when the need arises, that’s a good thing to have. When you have runners on 2nd and 3rd and the score is already 5-3, a 90 MPH pitch, right down the middle of the plate, to the hottest hitter on the Nats….you will soon be showering…

Now to be a gloomy Gus again (at 2:00 AM Sunday Morn when it’s likely no one will see it til Monday, even if they even bother to look at my posts 😉 )

Let’s look at the 4 starters not named Julio….
    Mike Foltynewicz 6-5, 4.45 ERA

    Matt Wisler 4-11 5.16 ERA

    Aaron Blair 0-5 7.99 ERA

    Tyrell Jenkins 2-4 6.20 ERA

Berigan, that’s not fair, they are after all, young kids…Well, they look young (except for Blair, he looks old 😆 ) Jenkins looks about 17…but this surprised me..
Folty will be 25 in Oct, Wisler 24 in Sept , Blair is 24 and Jenkins is also 24.
So what? It takes time to develop, Just think of Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux!
    Ok…
Let’s look at Smotlz … 2-7 5.48 his first season…he was also…21. At the ripe ol age of 22, he was 12-11 with a 2.94 ERA in 208 innings
    Glavine, in his first full season at 22, 7-17 4.56, at 23, 14-8 3.68
    Maddux, in his first full season at 21, 6-14 5.61 as a grizzled 22 Y.O. 18-8 3.18

Ber, they are all HOF’ers! True, you got me there…Can I mention
Steve Avery? He’s no HOF’er…though if he hadn’t been used like a 37 Y.O. vet at 21, he too probably would have been a HOF’er
    18-8 3.38 at 21….

Ok, it’s not too likely that Foltz, Wisler, Blair or Jenkins are future HOF’ers…but, what exactly are they? One of the reasons we all enjoy baseball so much is you almost never know
What someone may turn into…one of the guys above might get a new grip on a slider, Change, Cutter, and be at least a solid 12-15 game winners (and while I mention their W/L records, with this year’s team, those really don’t count, heck Julio hasn’t won a game at home all year long!) with a 4.00 or lower ERA every year…
Or, they may be 4th/5th starters their whole careers…I’m just saying, they are not exactly teenagers….Every one of them came from teams that had to have reasons for being willing to let
them go….I know, you have to give up talent to get talent…but, the Cubs and Red Sox still won’t give up their top, top prospects for anyone, at least this year….even though they are both overloaded with hitting talent……I guess minor league pitching is less of an exact science, but there are still guys teams don’t trade away…

Good morning Ber, of course we read your post. Anywho, did you know that lest than 10 percent of all kids drafted ever reach the major leagues? Lots of things happen along the way it seems. Talk about an inexact science…

So, let’s look at the Braves’ pitching for a second or lack there of: Okay, second is over. That didn’t take long did it? Translation, the Brave don’t really have any pitching right now. That is just the way it is. With thirty major league teams, 5 starters per team, well, it’s tough trying to find 150 reliable arms. Especially the way teams treat pitchers these days.

Yes, Avery was abused to the point he was done long before his time. So what do we do? Just grin and bear it. The braves are trying to by-pass the system bring up these kids long before they are ready. When they do get someone who can eat some innings, they flip them for another prospect.

I thing Roger is a good pitching coach with respect to finding mechanical flaws in a pitcher’s delivery but we have yet to find another Leo who understood how to maintain a pitcher’s long term health. The Jonny Sain school of pitching mechanics.

I guess had had known this at some point but it got lost in all the clutter:

“As a result, TBS became a basic cable network, which means that it collects monthly license fees from cable operators.”

“It also means that TBS had to receive permission from ESPN, which owns cable rights to MLB, to air the Braves.

I just didn’t remember that ESPN, in effect, owned MLB TV. What happened to anti-trust laws?!? Money, I guess.

Now it’s silly to think that the Braves would comply with Yank’s GM Brian Cashman’s request of Folty and Inciarte for McCann. That’s just silliness, but I suppose you can’t blame a guy for trying, right? Surely he would have a more reasonable return in mind. Especially when Coppy could just as easily acquire someone via FA and keep his prospects.

But when I look at the FA market for catchers, you have one guy – Wilson Ramos – who has been healthy for 1 season out of 7, that being his FA walk year. He’s also having a breakout year offensively… in his FA walk year.

That just doesn’t sit well with me.

Prior to 2016, his highest slugging % was .470, across only 78 games in 2013.

Then there’s Matt Wieters. He’s not a bad option, but he is past his prime and still dealing with the effects of elbow surgery 2 years ago.

    Let’s just compare some 2016 numbers…

    Matt Wieters: .240/.294/.381, 10 HR, 41 RBI
    Brian McCann: .232/.332/.407, 16 HR, 48 RBI
    Tyler Flowers: .254/.343/.422, 7 HR, 21 RBI

Coppy is on record again in a Sunday interview with MLB Network Radio stating that Catcher is a top offseason priority.

Who ya gonna get? Seriously… who?

If I’m Coppy, I turn my attention (and budget) to 3B or RF and go for a big bat. There are a few of those out there. Not at C, though.

Gotta say… the Braves finally are in a position to go shopping for an impact hitter, and the market is less than prime. Yoenis Cespedes leads the charge, but he’ll cost a mint. There’s always Ian Desmond, who has had a huge season as TEX’s CF. No reason he couldn’t play RF here. I still like 3B Justin Turner. Is RF Jose Bautista too old?

I still think I’d take any of those guys over the apparent C options. Maybe Coppy knows something we don’t. We assume FA, but maybe he has a guy targeted through trade other than Mac.

One thing’s for sure… this offseason promises to be a wild ride.

I believe the Braves are showcasing Jace Peterson. Not for a late 2016 deal, but for inclusion in an offseason deal.

Hey… why else would they start him in CF? Just because you want to give Ender a day off? I don’t buy it. Chase d’Arnaud is the listed backup at CF. Francoeur is listed as the #3 option.

And it wasn’t just to keep his bat in the lineup, either. If that was the case, you wouldn’t have started Gordon Beckham at 2B… he of the anemic 2nd have stats. Ugh… he’s been putrid.

Of all the guys on the 2016 roster that won’t be here in 2017, Beckham is at the top of the list. AJP is up there too, but mainly because it’s time to retire.

I think it is rare to have a super utility guy who can also play centerfield. Peterson has matured quite a bit since his arrival in Atlanta. He is not a superstar by any stretch but he has been clutch from the git go. Yesterday was simply a red letter day for him.

Pretty amazing come back though. The gNats chink in their armor is definitely their bull pen.

The Braves are actually scoring more runs, unfortunately, the pitching staff as a collective has collapsed. I know it is still way too early to make a reasonable assessment of Dansby Swanson but my eyes tell me he is better suited as a second basemen. Just saying…

As for the Buffalo, he has been a pretty decent backstop for the gNats but you are right, he has had trouble staying in the line up.

A season of Brian McCann behind the dish would be fine if he could be relied upon for 80 games. He has played hurt most of his tenure as a Yankee. We forget these guys are not machines.

I think the short porch in Yankee Stadium is a detriment to many players because they see the short fence and over swing trying to pull the ball. It’s like the Crawford Boxes in Houston.

Let the homeruns come naturally. Those big over aggressive swings often lead to pop ups and weak ground balls.

Freddie Freeman playing with a hurt finger explains a lot to me.

I think Mac (L) and TFlow (R) would make a nice tandem, but I’m not willing to give up any of my top prospects unless they are willing to pay a huge chunk of his remaining deal.

BTW- I also think Mac (L) and Recker (R) would also be OK.

I guess where I stand on this is simply that the FA options don’t exactly make my socks go up and down. Mac is available and would be a fantastic battery-mate for our young pitchers. But I’m not willing to give up a Sean Newcomb or Kolby Allard for him. Aaron Blair? Uh, we’re getting closer.

(For the record, I’m not willing to give up Kolby Allard for anyone.)

Alan Carpenter of Fansided suggests that the McCann talk is just much ado about nothing. His view is that the Yankees missed their small window of opportunity prior to the Aug. 1 deadline when GM’s, especially Coppy, were in a trading mood.

And he goes on to display a dizzying amount of boutique stats to suggest that once Mighty Mac is now simply Mediocre Mac and not even that away from Yankee Stadium.

Hey, you all know that I could care less about those basement created quantifiers and still prefer the eye test. But I don’t think Mac measures up there either. Especially at such a high $$ price. Methinks he is destined to be a DH in NY for the remainder of his onerous pact.

I think as much as we wonder about Ramos having a great year his F.A. year (don’t forget a lot of guys stink in their walk year trying to get 20-25 Mil a year) Coppy also wonders about Flowers career numbers….
This year, .254 BA, .343 OBP . IF Seitzer found a flaw or something, great….GM didn’t give him much love. For his career, .227 BA, .296 OBP
Only one season with more than .400 AB’s so I assume he was also not always facing top righties…

V, I am glad that you too take a dim view of “boutique stats” (I’m gonna go out on a limb as say neither Gil nor CL do either 😛 )…I think anyone can make an argument for or against most anyone (I think any one of us could do most of what Boreass and his staff does to talk up a guy into eliteness–hmmm, not a word apparently, but should be)
Here is my argument for McCann. the Yankees as a whole. suck!
    http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYY/2016.shtml
No one on the team has an OBP above .346. Their top HR and RBI guy was 39, and they traded him to the Rangers (where he has hit even better, cuz…better hitters around him and the playoff hunt)
Also, McCann’s contract is not as bad as one might think…
17 Mil a year, for 2017 and 2018, Option for 2019 IF …..from baseballreference…$15M Team Option Option will vest if he totals 1,000 PAs from 2017-18, catches 90 games in 2018 and is not on the disabled list at the end of the 2018 season
Doesn’t sound so bad now, does it?
He’s 32, you know, a year older than H.O. 😆 I thin everyone thought he would break down quickly, but you just never know with catchers….everyone has been waiting for AJ to not be good for years, and it took til he was 40…
and I do think Marketing as a bonus, makes sense too.
The average fan probably still hasn’t heard much about Dansby, he isn’t going to have fans buzzing about 2017…a new park, McCann and Frenchy back again for the first time, a decent starting pitcher, and add..Edwin Encarnación???? Then you have a team that can compete…on paper.
But V, as you mentioned Jose Bautista too…both are risks because of their age…and cuz with all things being equal, they are more likely to go to a proven contender than to the ATL, as they are going to want a chance to go to the playoffs before they retire…it’s tough….that’s why a name like…Kolby Allard may have to be tossed in to get what the team needs…a guy that has NO say in coming to the braves 😉

Speaking of free agents, does anyone else think that Nick Markakis doesn’t feel like he was sold a bill of goods when he agreed to sign on with Atlanta? Still, it has given him a chance to regain his strength following the same neck surgery Prince Fielder had and we have seen how that has worked out… So I guess that was a push.

Yes, trades have to be made in that moment that one party feels desperation and the other generous. sort of like buying a used car….

Not all of Coppy’s trades have been winners but not all of the losers either.

If Matt Kemp comes to camp next spring 20 pounds lighter, everyone will credit Coppy as being a genius. (I know he was quoted as saying 30 pounds but muscle mass is heavier than fat. i would not mind him toning up. We all remember what happened when Andruw ballooned up to 250 lbs.)

If I recall correctly, Kemp himself admitted that he had let himself get out of shape and vowed to do better in Atlanta, a place he truly wants to be. If anyone thought we’d see a dramatic change during the season, that’s just simply not realistic. A guy can’t drop that kind of weight while constantly traveling and trying to stay strong. That kind of transformation can only occur over the offseason with a consistent disciplined approach to both nutrition and targeted exercise. For now, I believe him when he says he wants that for himself. If he comes into camp next spring looking the same, then I’ll gripe.

Lots of baked chicken and no white bread… There are lots of people available to help him. Number one is himself. I think he will do it. I remember it once being said that Matt Kemp was capable of being whatever caliber of player Mike wanted to be.

Perhaps it will be a good experience for him to be around young and hungry players striving to make it in the show and realize how he can be a positive roll model for the kids.

Ber, I don’t think there are any really good catcher options that are currently apparent. That doesn’t mean there won’t be some guys available via trade that we don’t know about yet.

That said, I think Flowers has done a better job than we expected. He’s come through with some big hits in clutch situations. Is he an All-Star? No. But I don’t think Wieters or McCann will be either. I have to admit that I’ve been a little disappointed in the way he gets run on consistently. If he had Recker’s arm I’d just as soon move forward with him and fill in around him.

I’m a little ambivalent. If we upgrade, then GREAT. If not, and if we spend the $$ more wisely elsewhere, I won’t cry either. Honestly, I’d rather have 30+ HR from RF.

With regard to Wisler/Blair/Jenkins all having to go back to AAA to work things out, the honest truth is that none of the 2 (with the possible exception of Wisler) should have even sniffed The Show yet anyway. But when the major league team has no pitchers…

We keep speaking of the need to upgrade at catcher and RF, but perhaps the biggest need is starting pitching. And I’m talking about two.

We’ve seen how rushing a pitcher can be detrimental, and I don’t want to see that with any of our others. I want Sean Newcomb to have a full season at AAA. I want Tyrell Jenkins to have a full season there. (He hasn’t yet.)

This team needs a clear #2 to follow Julio, and they desperately need a LH. Then they can follow with Folty and whomever wins the battle for #5… be it Wisler or Blair.

Side note: Aaron Blair has rebounded at AAA in his last 5 games. He seems the most likely of the current young crop to be traded in the offseason IMO. There is some talk that he will promoted on Thursday to make the next start in Jenkins’ rotation spot, with John Gant remaining in the bullpen. Personally, I’d like to see him remain in AAA and keep doing what he’s doing. If he is promoted, it’s a clear sign to me that Coppy wants to give other GMs a chance to see him.

    Ya know…

The thought struck me. Coppy continues to underscore that having money to spend doesn’t just mean just in FA, but also for trades. They could go after a top player with a big contract via trade.

They already talked to CHW about Chris Sale.

If the Braves must go after a real #1 type pitcher, they’re gonna have to give up something big to get him. Is there a chance they could dangle Ozzie Albies for a guy like Sale?

If you really want to go after a guy like Sale, you’re gonna start with Ozzie, add Viz, and then toss in another pitcher like Gant or Whalen.

And while that might seem unfathomable after all the hype around Ozzie, they haven’t exactly clamored to bring him on up alongside Dansby, have they?

Has the emergence of Jace Peterson as a Prado-like grinder given the FOT’s a sense that he could be the team’s 2B going forward?

Don’t forget… they just acquired Travis Demeritte, a 2B playing at A+ Carolina. Demeritte isn’t likely targeted for 3B since you have Austin Riley in the pipeline at A- Rome, and Kevin Maitan right behind that. There’s also the recently acquired Anfernee Seymour, another middle-IF with what scouts call “game changing speed”. He’s also at A- Rome. All of those guys I just mentioned are in the team’s top 19 prospects.

But I have deviated from my original point…

Would you rather have Dansby and Ozzie up the middle, or would you rather have Dansby and Jace, with Sale and Julio topping your rotation?

I know my own answer to that question.

Gil, Dr. Wilson tells me that if you don’t eat anything white, you’ll drop 10-15 pounds simply through doing that. Have I successfully accomplished that? No. Not to say he’s wrong, either. Sometimes I just have to have a glass of milk, or rice – – something.

I love the guy. He’s in his late 70s now, stands 6’5″, as gentle as a kitten, and totally down to earth. He challenged me to a diet duel and we shook on it. He lost 60 lbs, I lost 40. He regained all 60, I regained all 40. He admitted we both are hopeless. My mobility so severely challenged and I simply can’t live on tofu and wood chips. I suppose if I’m gonna blame the bullpen yesterday morning, I need to give them credit this morning.

Rob Whalen was cruising until he wasn’t. He is on a strict innings limit this season since he’s coming off double knee surgery (did y’all know that?) and is right up against it. Coincidentally – or not – Aaron Blair is lined up with him in their respective rotation spots. Don’t be surprised to see Aaron make this next start.

As for Whalen, I think he has terrific stuff. Great sinking fastball. I’m not so sure he’s got starter stuff, though. Not much else to compliment the sinker. But I do think he’d make a great late inning guy to come in and get that much needed ground ball to get out of an inning. That may well be his role in 2017.

Gotta be honest, I kinda thought they might get something for him more than a couple of fringe prospects. I suppose you could argue that they did get two players. But if neither has any real prospect value, did you really get anything?

That said, I expect him to re-sign this winter, so it’s really only a temporary arrangement anyway.

    Courtesy of Steve Adams, MLBTR:

Neither [Dylan] Moore nor [Matt] Foley ranked within the top 30 prospects of their respective organizations. The 24-year-old Moore, though, has enjoyed a nice season split between Class-A and Class-A Advanced, hitting .263/.377/.440 with 14 homers and 40 stolen bases. While it should be pointed out that the 2015 seventh-round pick spent most of the season playing at Class-A, where he was a good bit older than the average player in the league, his production didn’t really take off until he was moved up to High-A, where he has slashed .351/.400/.649 with five homers in just 17 games. He’s a bit old for that level as well, but his quick adaptation could prompt further promotion. Beyond that, he’s a jack of all trades in the field. Moore has played every position on the field except catcher, and that includes pitcher (though the seven hits he allowed in his lone inning of work probably mean he won’t be spending much time on the mound in the future).

Foley, meanwhile, has spent the season with the Marlins’ Rookie-level affiliate in Arizona before recently being bumped up to short-season Class-A. The 2015 40th-rounder has totaled just 44 plate appearances and batted .257/.386/.257 and caught one of four runners that have attempted to steal against him.

As for Moore, maybe he turns out to be a valuable bench piece one day. You know the old saying, “Jack of all trades, master of none.” Still, there is value in versatility. One can assume that Foley was chosen in an effort to bolster the system’s catching depth.

Dylan Moore was a 7th Round pick of the Rangers in 2015 out of UCF, where he led the team with a .333 AVG, 80 hits and 45 RBI. He also compiled a .542 SLG with 10 HR’s, 14 doubles, 3 triples, and 14 SB’s. As their SS he registered a .949 fielding % with 108 putouts and 170 assists.

Shame on me… I gave up in the eight inning, could not fight the sleep bug off any longer. Oh well…

I am a bit bemused by the Francoeur trade. The Braves get two fringe prospects for Frenchy and cash considerations plus gave up international spots which will cost them more money in the league’s excise tax for going over this year. ????? So, why did we do this trade? Do the Braves really need that much depth? Someone explain this to me.

I guess someone saw something somewhere in these two guys to think they were worth giving up their mascot.

As for Frenchy, he gets a chance to play on a team which has a real shot at the play-offs. Good for him. To the Marlins, it is a win win… I guess Francoeur will platoon with Ichiro in right field.

And of course, the game went into extra innings with the team always short 1 bench player, and then trading another. Thus, Rob Whalen, who will not pitch again this season, made his last appearance as a pinch hitter. Seriously. You can’t make this stuff up. If it matters, Brandon Snyder will join the team tonight to fill the bench spot.

Gil, the Braves gave up the Int’l signing slot because they went all in this year. And because of the odd signing rules, the essentially can’t make another splash in that market for another 2 years. They can’t give a bonus that exceeds $300K, which for all practical purposes takes them out of signing any impact players. So the bonus slots are fairly useless to them except to use in trades. (BTW- That’s how they accumulated so many this past year… from teams that couldn’t effectively use their own.) It doesn’t cost them anything to trade them, but it would to use them. That’s where the penalties would have kicked in.

Now I am a little baffled that they sent money along with Frenchy to help pay the remaining 5 weeks of his deal. Apparently there are some performance bonuses on top of his $1M base deal that he is expected to reach. Those could push the total payout upwards of $2M. Still, it’s a little surprising that the Braves agreed to cover some of that.

As for Frenchy, he is expected to get regular playing time on a team that is a playoff contender. So for that reason alone, I’ll pull for the Fish for the rest of the season… as long as the Braves aren’t in thee opposite dugout.
And I’ll be surprised if Frenchy doesn’t return to ATL for 2017. It almost seems like that’s a given. Maybe he’ll bring Marteen back with him. 😀

    More details…

The Braves only sent along $104,959 with Frenchy to MIA. That’s fairly insignificant in an overall budget. Jeff has an incentive clause for $200K extra at 300 plate appearances, and that repeats at 350, 400, 450, etc. He’s at 276 already and will easily reach the first mark. His base contract is for $1M of which he’s still due around $219K. The amount sent seems a sort of arbitrary to me, but it must be some percentage of something or it’d be a more rounded figure.

The Braves only sent 1 bonus slot (#93) in the deal. And Gil, you are correct about the penalty incurred by the trade. This slot’s value is $238,800, and there is a consequence to trading it away: The Braves will now have to mail another check to the commissioner’s office for $238,800. This represents 100% of the additional overage they have incurred by reducing their pool allocation because they went over their 2016 pool amount. It’s somewhat convoluted, but then taxes and penalties usually are.

Now… it would seem that both MIA and TEX reaped measurable benefits from this deal. But the Braves..? Why would they burn $342,759 for 2 fringe prospects whose value certainly seems questionable?

I don’t subscribe to the theory that the team was looking to open a roster spot for a youngster since Brandon Snyder was called up to take the spot. As you’ll recall, Snyder was DFA’d last month and re-signed to a minor league deal after clearing release waivers. The move essentially removed him from the 40-man roster. Well, he had to be added back to be brought up. I suppose he’s a candidate to be DFA’d again if they wanted to bring up Dustin Peterson or Matt Lipka. But Snyder is a RH bat with power potential, so…

So what was the reasoning? Well, I’ve read this morning one published report that says Jeff had requested a trade since his playing time had decreased significantly after the acquisition of Matt Kemp. that makes sense to me, and it makes sense that the team would honor it. I’m glad they found a way to get him on a potential playoff team.

Oh yeah… and they played a game last night. Familiar script: gave up early runs, got behind, rallied late to tie it, lost in extras. Yawn.

Shame that the game was on so late…in fact, I saw the first few innings, saw Julio get behind, figured once again a starter wasn’t go deep….again, and instead of forcing Dad to watch any more (he’s not a big fan of the game anyway) we watched …Broadway thru a Keyhole, a rare “pre-code” film from 20th Century (before it became 20th Century Fox) that ran on Turner Classic Movies earlier in the night, cuz it had a rare appearance by the crooner Russ Columbo, a singer nearly as popular as Bing Crosby before his unfortunate death a year later…anyway, had DVR’ed it watched it, some stuff after the movie, then saw the game was still on….9-6 AZ, in the 8th….kept watching, saw it become 9-7….saw the “closer’ of the Diamondbacks come unraveled again…walks, walks, a hit…bases loaded…just able to tie the game, not get the lead….
Saw Nick M make not 1, but 2 game saving catches…in a row! Perhaps the best catches I have ever seen him make, but since it was at 1:30 or so, I doubt anyone even bothered to put up the highlights…
Once the D’Backs got a runner on 3rd, it didn’t look good…but, Matt Kemp made a diving catch on a shallow fly ball, but couldn’t get up quick enough to throw the runner out at home…never seen that before….
It really felt like a crazy playoff game…glad I saw it, even if the wrong team won…..

Something to keep an eye on…

The video I linked earlier showing Andrew Benintendi’s injury could be more relevant to Braves Country than it initially seemed. The team today placed Beni on the DL before the results of the MRI have even been examined. In my mind, that’s a bad portent for the youngster. Obviously the team feels the injury is severe enough to shelve him for 2+ weeks, but the MRI could reveal enough to shut him down for the remainder of 2016.

    If that happens…

Watch and see if the Boston front office doesn’t make a phone call about Neck Markakis.

Yes I know that Frenchy is a RH and the bench has been all RH. But the trade and subsequent callup was an opportunity to correct the imbalance. Rio Ruiz is also a LH, but would need to be added to the 40. Still wondering why Snyder, who had to be added, was the guy tabbed. I’m sure in 7 more days we’ll see more players added.

How about that Wisler kid, huh? Where’d he come from?

Seriously, he’s pitched that way before, and he’s had that potential all along. It’s between his ears. And I believe that Roger & Co. have been working hard on him.

His biggest thing was concentrating too much on his mechanics and forgetting about just trusting his pitches and pitching to the batter. As Joe Simpson said last night, he’s got the stuff to get ML hitters out. He just needs to use it.

    Final line: 8 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K, 103 pitches/62 strikes. Welcome back, kid. Had a no-hitter through 7.

Hopefully last night was as sign of things to come.

Wisler said good sinker was key tonight, but slider got better as game went on and change-up improved with work he did in Triple-A

Wisler is first #Braves starter to go more than 6 innings since July 17.

Very few pitchers will ever match Greg Maddux in the thinking department but I don’t believe he though about how to pitch, jest the what to pitch. Pretty spectacular job of pitching by the young righty last night but his defense played pretty stellar behind him too.

Swanson made a couple of Simbaisk plays at short and Freddie took a real shot last night falling over the railing. I will be shocked to see him in the line up tonight after the stiffness sets in today.

San Frans’ Moore came within one hitter of pitching a no-no in LA. That sort of over shadowed everything else in the media this AM.

An observation, the Braves may not be playing for anything this season but they are not playing like they are 25 games out of first place. Guys laying out for balls, tumbling over railings and running into walls trying to make plays. I have seen teams with a lot more on the line play with a lot less heart. As a fan, I appreciate the effort.

    Here’s something I’m wondering this morning…

Will the success of Dansby Swanson as a ML regular prompt the FOT’s to bring Ozzie up on September 1? And if not, why not?

As Gil said earlier, the team doesn’t have much to play for from a league standpoint. But they have plenty to play for as an organization, and the next 5 weeks will speak plenty about 2017.

I’d like to see Ozzie and Rio come up. Rio’s a LH who hits RHP’s better, so why not platoon him with Adonis for September?

We know what we have in Jace. We need to know what we have on Ozzie. Same with Rio.

I say bring ’em on up on Sept. 1.

Well, they may not want to start his arb clock…A rich club like the Cubs messed with Kris Bryant last year made him wait a month to come up to slow him down (ended up with 99 RBI’s if I was he, I’d find a way to make them pay, Arb hearing each year 😉 ) Ozzie, if he came up this year, would be a free agent after 6 full seasons, right? at the age of 26. So…sadly, no matter what they say, they may hold him back so he can’t become a free agent til he’s 27…Hope they don’t do that….

I’m pretty sure that if this bunch were pitching for any other major league team, they would have to go into the witness protection program. Rumor is, many have been requested to participate in next year’s Home Run Derby contest preceding the All-star game. Maybe they should try throwing batting practice for the Braves…

Many have to be thankful the rosters will expand Thursday. that means they will continue to have a seat in the bullpen. Otherwise several would be on their way out of Atlanta this morning.

I think yesterday was the first time I saw the offense give up in the ninth inning. The Giants even felt bad for the Braves in the end. With two outs, they were still playing station to station baseball rater than being off at the crack of the bat so as to not run up the score on this hapless bunch.

Aaron Blair was put into a no win situation by the Braves yesterday. He clearly is not yet ready to pitch in the show. He will get there but not yet. Throwing hard is not the only prerequisite needed to pitch in the show. If that were the case, Rick Ankiel would have continued to throw for St Louis. It is what it is. There will be an abundance of opportunities for pitchers to make this squad in spring training. If I were many of them, I would take nothing for granted and do everything my coaches recommended as far as preparing for the 2017 season.

The Braves did not have a horrible road trip, I have seen worse. yes, they did drop four of seven but they did win three of seven. For this team of misfits, that is real progress.

It’s just yesterday’s game leaves a real bad taste in your mouth. Not so much that they lost but how they lost. Okay, no heartbreaker, just a back breaker…

Off day today, perhaps a good thing. If I were Snit, I think I would tell everyone on the team to not think about baseball at all today. Go swimming or on a picnic, anything to forget about Sunday’s fiasco.

    Courtesy of Bowman:

“We’ve just got to stay with him,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “He’s young. You saw glimpses of the stuff, but it’s got to be consistent and it’s got to be every pitch because a team like [the Giants] will make you pay for it.”

“I think it’s just trusting my stuff,” Blair said. “I’ve got to be a little tougher out there when somebody gets on base. I’m still one pitch away if I get a ground ball. I’ve just got to be a little tougher on the mound.”

    Courtesy of DO’B:

Blair: “I’m a pitcher that needs to be down in the zone to create movement. When I’m up, it’s just flat and it goes a long way.”

Simply put, the kid is not ready yet, as you said Gil. But on this team, you gotta do whatcha gotta do. Baptism by fire. At least he sounds like he knows exactly where he is and what he needs to do. Appears as though he’ll get at least one more start.

I’m not sure who or what the Braves might go after in the off season as far as pitching but I think they need a good veteran innings eater to (A) mentor the kids and (B) help save the bull pen.

With the prevailing wisdom being 100 pitches and you are done, the bull pen is getting worn out. Unless the newbies understand that they are not going to last much past the 5th inning if they try to strike out the side every inning, we are going to continue to see leads given up night after night.

Major league hitters will continue to foul off pitch after pitch until they wear you down and run up your pitch count.

Anyone else see the wild pitch by the gNats reliever that led to a run on an intentional walk? It’s why I don’t want them to change the rule to (speed up the game) by awarding first without the pitches. Want to speed up the game? Do away with the DH and put a pitch clock on the pitchers. Or leave it alone and just let it play out. You do not go to a baseball game when it’s 95 degrees to be in a hurry. It’s why it is a summer time sport. Otherwise, play all the games inside and shorten it to 7 innings.

I’ve been to several AAA games this year where they utilize the 30 second pitch clock. It doesn’t appear to disrupt the game or the pitcher. I believe they are using it in AAA now to condition pitchers for its implementation in the ML game at some point.

Not sure if it’s something that would have to be collectively bargained, but I think this year is the year, isn’t it?

One item that I am sure will be discussed at length in the new CBA is the stupid Qualifying Offer system. It was supposed to protect the small market teams, but has not helped anyone, teams or players alike. You can bet that there will be a new system devised to help the smaller market teams remain competitive in the FA market.

Here’s something that is being discussed that isn’t getting alot of pub…

The players union has complained about the grueling travel schedule and relative lack of off days. Currently, MLB plays 162 games in 183 days, resulting in just 21 days off. They have discussed reducing the number of games to facilitate it, but the owners’ position has been that a lesser number of games should result in less pay. Naturally, the MLBPA is against anything resembling a reduction in salary. But naturally a fewer number of games means less gate revenue, concessions revenue, parking revenue, etc.

Nobody wants less money, so I don’t expect that issue to amount to much.

No… if they want to alleviate the bad travel times and start times, they’ll realign the divisions more geographically, get rid of the stupid inter-league play, and go back to a more unbalanced schedule. That’d reduce both travel time and expense.

I think everyone learned a lesson from the last time the two sides could not come to an agreement. That said, I’m sure the owners would love to have more games. Play everyday and twice on Sunday… Trouble is, there are not enough pitchers in all of baseball to make that work. It’s bad enough as it is.

Sort of like all the empty seats at the NASCAR races. The TV coverage is just too good and the traffic is a heck of a lot easier. They became spoiled by their own success. They expanded their fan base to the point where they have lost their core fans.

So, with the availability of all the baseball games, you eventually make something special into something quite ordinary. Kind of like your favorite song that at some point you become sick of it… Bad baseball makes you sicker quicker..

Anyhoo…. Game tonight with the 3rd version of the Padres in two years. Anyone remember when the Padres GM was anointed exec of the year when he made all the deals which were to make his club competitive? I remember when the Orioles tried the same thing… Same results…

Wondering if anybody else (Markakis, Beckham) will be moved before Thursday.

And wondering who the September callups will be. All indications are that Ozzie will NOT be in the mix. Jed Bradley has been talked about as almost a certainty. But he isn’t on the 40-man roster, which is full, so a spot would have to be created.

Williams Perez, who has been back pitching rehab games, could come back at some point. But he’s coming off the 60-day DL, which doesn’t count against the 40. Again, a spot would have to be created.

Chris Withrow and Shae Simmons are possibilities.

As for position players… well, I wouldn’t expect any that aren’t already on the 40-man roster. That includes Ozzie and Rio Ruiz. Kyle Kubitza is already on, though, so he is a possibility. Daniel Castro is the only other position player in the minors that is on the 40-man roster.

I wonder if the team will cut away some of the dross to make some room for some youngsters..?

Examples of dross: Brandon Snyder, EOF, Ryan Weber

Those are 3 names that aren’t going to contribute in 2017, and aren’t going to contribute much more in 2016.

Of course, a trade of a Markakis or Beckham would obviously open a 40-man spot. That would be ideal.

And for me personally, I’d rather see the hopeful future (Ozzie / Rio) than the stagnant present (Beckham / Snyder).

Our long national nightmare is over….Julio finally won a start at home!!!!! 😛
Man, read a bit about Jed Bradley ….amazing that he was a Brewer #1 pick, never made it as a starter, was turned into a reliever, then traded to the braves for cash or A PTBNL…had something like a 6 ERA there, then seemingly turned it all around just since June! Curious to see him pitch…

Still not sure where the braves are going to get 2 starters…I remember when Bobby Cox was the Manager(and was universally considered the best manager a player could play for), and they had what, 1-2 so-so years after so many winning years and yet still couldn’t get anyone to sign except a past his prime Derek Lowe and KK?

So many teams need starters…really don’t think they can expect teams to give up a solid #3 starter via a trade either….look a the Dodgers and Red Sox…no matter what they do, they always seem to be short a starter….

So, what do the braves do? Good question. Teams will be competing via free agency…but, the braves first round pick is safe…I forget, if they signed 2 guys that had qualifying offers…what do they lose? Sandwich pic? 2nd rounder? Plus, the braves will have money to spend….trying to trade for a #3 or #4 vet…who do you give up? A young pitcher with real upside? Again, teams aren’t gonna give away a 180+ innings guy….Mets seemed to do pretty well with 3-4 very young starters….Colon might not have even started for them last year or this year if Zach Wheeler hadn’t hurt his elbow (and to think, he is just about their best starter this year!)

It will be interesting to see what Coppy has up his sleeve….perhaps there will be some Japanese or Cuban guy they can just “Buy” ? I know, it hasn’t worked well in the past for the braves, but it has worked well for other teams….

You never know when a Charlie Liebrandt might be available. The Braves have had decent luck turning some over the hill vets around but they were traded right before the wheels fell off for said pitchers. I expect several older types will sign in the off season with the Braves because they know they will get a shot.

Of Tim Tebow… I would not be upset to see the Braves give him a go. Tebow knows he isn’t going to start in the show. Another El Orso Blanco in the making. He’s no spring chicken but he isn’t worn out either. Give him a minor league contract and an invite to spring training. The increase in the gate would pay for it in beer sales alone… Just saying.

Well pitched and well played game by los Bravos last night.

Of Tim Tebow… I would not be upset to see the Braves give him a go. Tebow knows he isn’t going to start in the show.

If you look at the timing of the showcase, it’s at a time when all of the minor league teams are wrapping up their seasons. But the winter leagues and instructional leagues are beginning. You know he has to realize that. He has to know he needs work and appears to be open to the instruction.

Whether or not the guy has the talent to ever rise as high as AA remains to be seen, but he appears to be going about chasing his dream in the proper manner.

Now… my personal opinion after having seen the clips from the workout…

He’s so stinkin’ musclebound that he’s kinda stiff. His swing is not fluid, and he doesn’t let his hips lead his body. That said, he can still hit the ball a long way when he hits it.

He’s fast. No doubt about that. I’ll tell ya, I’d hate to get in his way when he’s at full steam.

The guy’s an athlete. I think some team will take a flyer on him and send him to an instructional league to see if he can develop. But he’s got a long way to go…

So, what are the pros and cons for a player to sign with Atlanta? That is what the players will want to weigh before signing. Their agents will only want them to sign for the most money.

What do the Braves need? Catcher, pitcher(s). Third base is no longer the black hole it once was. Not saying there can’t be improvement but Adonis is sure a lot better than the guy who was sent down to triple A to learn how to play left field.

If Kemp loses 20 pounds this winter, I expect him to move to right field. That means Nick will either move back to Baltimore or left field. Say what you will, he has been the most clutch player on the roster from my point of view.

He has not hit 20 home runs but that is a tough chore for a guy who plays half his games at Turner Field. Not as hard to do at Camden Yards. I have been to both parks, Camden is a band box ala Citizens Bank Park in Phillie.

Still not sure where the braves are going to get 2 starters…

I put nothing past this group. They’ve pulled more than one rabbit out of their collective hat.

And they will have alot of money to spend in the offseason.

Don’t be surprised to see them trade for a top-of-the-rotation type and then sign a FA veteran.

Yes, the Braves have assembled some really nice farmhands who are several years away from being major league ready. I’m sure there are some short termers who will be available.

And what of Jace? Still a super sub? as much as I like him, that still appears to be his ceiling. He has not been a bad second baseman but I think you have to look at to whom he is being compared to. He is one of the better players on a bad team. I will not be surprised if he is traded this winter if the Braves think Ozzie is ready.

Gil, I expect there will be alot more of a transformation than we can sit here and imagine.

They have made public their intent to address pitching and catching. That will happen. But I think they could be very active in the trade market, trading some players we think are here long term. No idea who that may be, but don’t be surprised. This is a 100-loss team. Everybody but Freddie, Julio and Dansby are fair game.

I will be surprised if Markakis is on this team in 2017. And I will not be surprised if Mallex Smith finds his way into one of the deals. I think the team is all in on Inciarte long term. Then again, he could be gone. I really don’t see how they can keep both Inciarte and Mallex. I believe they’ll acquire a more traditional power hitting corner OF to play opposite Kemp.

And I think they’ll still address 3B. Adonis has had a nice season, but he’s still not upper echelon. Unless LAD makes it impossible for Justin Turner to leave, I think the team will make a run at him. And if not him, or secondarily to him, I think they’ll make a run at bringing Prado home.

I do not think they’ll get serious about a homecoming for McCann, though. I don’t see him as a good fit. And I don’t think they’ll take a run at Wieters, either. Quite honestly, Flowers has been as good as we hoped. I think they’ll sign a LH compliment to Flowers via FA and let them share the load. Alex Avila from CHW or Jason Castro from HOU jump out at me. Avila is a better defensive catcher, while Castro is a better offensive catcher. Avila was an All-Star in 2011; Castro in 2013.

One more thing… and I’ve mentioned it before. If they are serious about acquiring a Chris Sale type pitcher, they may have to give up a top prospect like Ozzie to make it happen. That’s the nature of the beast. Obviously it would take alot more, but he’d be the centerpiece. (The Braves themselves set that precedent in the Dansby deal.)

Maybe that’s why they don’t want to promote Ozzie to The Show in September. Maybe they want the aura to remain and not burst the bubble with real ML struggles. John Schuerholz has a long history of selling high on prospects. Just a theory… but I digress…

So I pose the question to you. Is it worth it? Is it worth a potential All-Star 2B for an established All-Star #1 pitcher?

    Like

  318. 333 Gil in Mechanicsville August 31, 2016 at 10:56 am

Ah ha… That’s the rub isn’t it? Established vs potential… The road to the show is littered with potentials and wannabes. I think Ozzie will be a good to great player but a lead off guy. You still need some semblance of power to play in the bigs. We were told that Peraza was going to be a superstar too.

Since I have not had the opportunity to see these players for myself, it is tough for me to say who is great and who is not. At some point we need to listen to those who have a better track record at assessing talent. The kid who was signed for a big bonus out of Venezuela this spring might make Ozzie irrelevant in three years.

What I do know is following the Cardinals’ model is not a bad way to go. Sure, they are not on top right now but I would not count them out. Washington has a glaring hole in their roster. Their bullpen blows man…

Anyway, it should be an interesting off season. I will not be upset if Markakis remains a Braves but not surprised if he is moved for pitching.

With wednesday night’s win against the Padres coupled with the Twins loss, The Braves no longer have the distinction of having the worse record in baseball. Baby steps eh?

Actually, the Braves ended August with a 13 wins and 15 losses. Hey, it’s not world beating but considering from where they have come, it is noteworthy.

Like a wise man once told me, it’s not always where you are, it is what direction in which you are headed. At least it is an upward trend.

Wisler wasn’t as sharp as his last game in Arizona but he battled a bit and persevered. 10 Ks and one dinger to show for 6 innings of work and 103 pitches. It is what you look for in young pitchers as they progress, to put together back to back good outings.

Folty takes the mound today at noon. I hope he beats the weather.

CL, I know y’all are in for a blow. Looks like our weather will arrive Saturday. It’s okay, our grass is crying for some rain. Everything looked mighty brown around here when we got home Saturday.

Hope we keep electricity and cable. I always keep about 30 gal of water stored and a quick trip to WallyWorld in the morning will fill in any gaps in the Hurricane box in the laundry room. The disturbance just offshore at the moment is just sending in bands of rain and thunderstorms. Nothing of any consequence.

No question that Wisler has the stuff to be a quality ML starter. His hurdle, like most youngsters, is between his ears. He’s making strides.

Aaron Blair needs time to make strides as well. What he has not had is the luxury of said time. He and Tyrell Jenkins have been rushed in their development. You will notice, though, there are a handful of pitchers that have not been rushed… Sean Newcomb, Kolby Allard, Max Fried, Lucas Sims, among a few others. Those are the guys that are the “next wave” of really talented pitchers.

Of course all will not pan out. That’s just how it is. But there are a couple you can look at and know they’ll be special. I am watching Kolby Allard at every stop along the way.

Speaking of starters, I calculated wrong when I predicted Jed Bradley to make Saturday’s start in ATL. He pitched in Gwinnett on Tuesday, meaning he’d be on short rest for Saturday. So Saturday’s starter is still a mystery. It’s possible that John Gant could make the start if he doesn’t come out of the bullpen before then.

According to those who supposedly know, we should only expect a couple of additions to the roster today; AJP and likely Chris Withrow. Withrow could conceivably take Gant’s spot in the bullpen allowing him to transition back into the rotation and make Saturday’s start.

Should they decide to call up a starter from AAA, the logical candidate would be Rob Wooten, who started Monday night.

The full contingent of Braves tabbed for the AFL this fall are:

IF’s Ozzie Albies and Travis Demeritte, OF Dustin Peterson, C Kade Scivicque, P’s Akeel Morris, Chris Ellis, Evan Phillips, Bradley Roney

Many think that along with Ozzie, DPete and Ellis will all have a shot at making next year’s ML roster out of spring. I think it’s a long shot for DPete, not because he isn’t talnted enough, but because the OF appears to already be crowded. And we know the team will probably go with a short bench again. But his performance in ARI could help shape the team’s strategy toward it’s OF.

One notable absentee to me is 3B Rio Ruiz. Maybe an indication that he’ll get a callup this month?

Rio Ruiz is 22. Bats from the left side.He could come up after the International League play-offs and platoon with Adonis but Garcia is making a case for him to play everyday. He has grown by leaps and bounds this season hasn’t he? He went 3 for 4 last night. His defense is not gold glove caliber but few exhibit that quality. His defense has improved however.

I would not be surprise to see Adonis still manning the position in 2017 but I would not be surprise to see him moved either. I just don’t know who they have ready to take over the position long term at this point. Ruiz is still young and is not even on the 40 man roster as of yet.

He too could be part of a trade but he is still young and learning.

OK, here’s the poop on the lefty Bradley:

He was a national Top 100 (#71 by Baseball America) prospect coming out of HS in Huntsville, AL, but chose to pitch in college at Georgia Tech.

He was drafted by the Brewers in the 1st round (15th) of the 2011 Draft.

After coming over to the Braves in the trade for essentially cash, he was assigned to AA Mississippi where he appeared in 15 games, 10 of which he started. At AA he had a 2.35 ERA w/ 69 K’s in 65 IP.

He pitched in 3 games, all starts, at AAA where he had a 1.50 ERA w/ 19 K’s in 18 IP.

He’s 6’3″, 225 lbs. His primary pitch is a sinking fastball that sits in the 90-94 range but has reached 97, but he also cuts his fastball. The cutter usually works more in the low-90s range. He has a good changeup that mirrors the sink he gets on his fastball. He also throws a slider that gets good late break. Interestingly, he has been working exclusively from the stretch as of late as he says it helps him get more out of his 3/4 slot delivery.

For what it’s worth, Bradley struggled alot in the Brewers system, prompting them to move him to the bullpen last year. Needless to say, he’s done much better in the Braves system. You can’t help but think a kid who grew up in Huntsville doesn’t love pitching for Atlanta.

The Braves put him back in the rotation once he was stretched out enough, and it has paid dividends. One can’t help but think someone picked up on a flaw in his delivery, either something mechanically or something that he was doing to tip his pitches. It doesn’t seem likely that geography alone was the impetus for the dramatic improvement. But the difference is dramatic, and the kid has earned his first call to The Show just months after basically being shipped out for cash. Nice comeback. Shows great character to me.

    Seemingly random note:

Pads’ RF Oswaldo Arcia, who has hit long HR’s in each of the first 2 games of the series, was released twice in the last 2 weeks before being picked up by SD.

He was DFA’d by Tampa on 8/19, and claimed off release waivers by Miami.

He was DFA’d by Miami (after the Francoeur trade) 6 days later and claimed off release waivers by SD.

Similarly, Tampa had claimed him off release waivers back in June after MIN DFA’d him.

His rap has always been that he has big time power (as we’ve witnessed), but equally big time K’s. He’s a big swinger, but also a big misser. I kind of thought after Tampa DFA’d him that the Braves should take a flyer on him. Why not? Low risk move for an upper level position prospect with power, something missing in the system. Then I wondered why they couldn’t have picked him up after MIA exposed him. But alas, he went to SD and has looked pretty dang good over 3 games. I imagine that he will come back to more of a “norm” over time, but the potential is on display.

I still think Coppy should have made the waiver claim. Nothing to lose.

I thought Paul Byrd make an interesting comment on how speed can effect a pitch. he said when he threw his pitches too fast, the tended to flatten out. I had not though of that before but it makes sense. I guess that is why some pitchers have trouble in the early innings because they are too strong. It is the magic “sweet spot” I think all pitchers strive for. That might explain why Cabrera’s fastball seems so hittable. It does not have a chance to bite.

Of course there is the problem of overthrowing a pitch too. Holding on too long… I guess if it were easy, everyone could do it.

I don’t know Where everyone is going to play next season but it is a good problem to have.

I still think Markakis will get traded before Enders. He is still long term while Nick only has two more years left on his deal. The Braves might have to eat a bit of his contract but not much. He’s been solid all around for a really bad ball club. I don’t think the Braves will give him away. Nor do they have to.

Great reading above! Loved the article on McCann and Salazar. Good people!

    RATS! sigh:
Tropical Storm Hermine, currently in the Gulf of Mexico is expected to move northeast and cause flooding in southeastern North Carolina on Friday.

According to Steve Pfaff of the National Weather Service in Wilmington, the risk for flooding is high as 5 to 10 inches of rain are expected to fall in the region between Thursday night and Saturday morning. All of New Hanover County and parts of Brunswick and Pender counties are expected to be the hardest hit.

“The eventual amount and distribution of rainfall will be highly dependent on the storm’s track; however, high confidence exists in the potential for flooding,” states the threat assessment released by NWS Wilmington.

Forecasters say a flash flood warning may be issued. Most at risk are low-lying areas, particularly near bodies of water, as well as roads and parking lots that could flood as stormwater drains and retention ponds fill up.

There is also a moderate-level threat for damaging wind gusts that could topple trees and cause power outages. If the storm tracks farther west than currently predicted, the threat for strong winds could decrease. However, a more westerly track could increase the risk for tropical tornadoes along the coast, according to NWS Wilmington meteorologist Mark Bacon. The threat of dangerous rip currents will also remain throughout the weekend.

Update: still have power, etc but it’s kinda “iffy” and flickery (first on B&S??) at times. NON-STOP rain!!! Not as bad as Floyd or Dennis but bad enough and won’t stop for a while yet.

The eye is completely open now where drier air had penetrated and destroyed it but the bands from one side of the former eyewall outward still survive and concentrated.

Hurricanes seem to present one element over the others: one might be a “wind” storm, while another might be primarily a rain event. This one has established itself as a water storm – which, in my personal opinion – is the better of the two, though others who were flooded out in others would surely disagree.

It’s been dark gray all day, requiring lights on in the house. Kelly’s primary concern has been the possibility of tornadoes (fully understandable) but that warning has been discontinued by the NWS.

I’ll tackle the editing as soon as I can, Gil. Many, many thanks for writing them, as always!

And I most sincerely thank each of you for your prayers! That may well be what dealt Hermine the death punch that broke it open! Big hugs to you!

    10-4 CL…

Tough game for the Braves tonight. Del La Cruz gave up 4 early.

</>”The Braves opened three spots on their 40-man roster by outrighting third baseman Kyle Kubitza and right-handed pitchers Madison Younginer and Wilfredo Boscan after the three cleared waivers.” The AJC

Well, I guess that answers your question Vee.

Woopee… So, 6 game winning streak… Now, let’s go into DC and take 2 out of 3… I know… heady stuff.

I kept flipping away from the game yesterday…seemed like there were forever 2-3 runners on, and the braves couldn’t get a run it…of course, the same was true of the Phillies….Teheran really does seem to be a different pitcher this year, just doesn’t give up, bows up as Chip says…wonder if he and Smoltz had a talk at some point this year????

Yes Ber, I think what we have seen with Julio this season is the result of talent finally gaining maturity. Julio has long been guilty of having a million dollar arm and a 10 cent brain. It is a common trait among young phenoms when they experience some bumps in the road, they just lose their focus and the next thing you know, they are Joey Devine….

I think this season has been a good one for Julio with a team behind him who collectively should I say is somewhat lacking in talent. What he should have learned is he can only control what he can control. All those loses when he had pitched well, he still made the All-star game because he had talent.

Now that the Braves are scoring runs, he knows he does not have to be perfect. Even yesterday, there was a lack of support but it did not seem to phase him, he just did what he could do. As a result, it worked out for him. I hope the other kids on the staff watch and learn. Julio is the grizzled vet on this staff at a very young age.

Somehow I lost an entire day yesterday, my internal clock is askew. Maybe it’s the holiday. Yes, it’s Labor Day… A day in which we give thanks to those who allow us to labor… 🙂 Okay, just a snide remark there. Anyway, earlish game today (4:05) PM.

Kemp is getting the day off. We will see if it makes a difference. I suspect it will.

I think yesterday’s game was a long one, hard to stay focused when you are watching paint dry.

So, after the ballgame, I watched the NASCAR race. Not a bad race, then watched Texas edge Notre Dame on double OT… Entertaining football game. Did the pros play yesterday? I think that is what threw me off my clock.

So, helped Josie do some yard work and watched her wash the house. I did my part, I pointed out the spots she missed :-)…

So, 1 1/2 hours til game time.

Sold the Trans Am yesterday. A little sad to see it go but it was not like I was using it. The Lexus is next. Then will have to decide which Pick Up to keep. That is going to be a tough one… Time to pare down the fleet.

It was a 1996 convertible with a LT-1 5.7l and a 6 speed stick shift. One of the reasons I could not really drive it was having to work the clutch with my left leg.

The guy who bought it seems pretty happy with it. He put the top down to drive it home.

I think he wanted to turn it into a show car as completely stock. It only had 72,000 miles on it.

Okay, I guess all things must come to an end I suppose. The Braves did not complete their comeback against the gNats and fall short by a 6-4 score. Gave them a scare though…

I would love to have that Trea Turner kid but I suspect he will be the Nationals’ full time centerfielder next season.

When I saw Trea Turner in a AAA game earlier this year he was truly a man amongst boys. You could see “special” all over him. What was San Diego thinking?

That said, he’s still K’ing at a pretty high rate. He’s gotta work on that to advance through the system.

So the A- Rome Braves, AA M-Braves and AAA G-Braves all clinched playoff spots over the weekend. Speaks well for the future of the Atlanta Braves.

at the ripe ol’ age of 22, it appears Jose Peraza is starting to show why he was the braves #1 pick….thank goodness we somehow got Matt Kemp for the aged woman beating “prospect” or I would really be P.O.ed about losing him….

Interestingly, after just announcing after his last start that Folty would go every 5 days the rest of the way regardless of the schedule, the Braves decided to give him an extra day this week. Willy P starts tonight; Folty goes tomorrow. That proclamation lasted less than a week. 🙂
