The Braves have completed the first half of the 2019 season and somewhat surprisingly, they are 4 1/2 games ahead of the Phillies who are maintaining the second slot.
The Washington Nationals have hit a soft spot in their schedule and are making a push towards the top but are one game under 500 and sit 7-1/2 games behind the 1st place Braves.
The Mets have taken a nose dive towards the cellar and look to vie with the Marlins for last place in the division. So, there is still a long way to go in the season and as we all know, any team is only one major injury away from having to cash it in for the season. That is, any team not named the Yankees or the Dodgers who are so deep they appear able to withstand just about anything other than a plane crash.
The Braves are currently in the middle of a 10 game road trip. They took two out of three from the Nats and split a four game series with the Cubs in Chicago. Perhaps more importantly, they have won the season series with the Cubs 5 game to 2. This could be important if the Cubbies manage to win the NL Central.
The Braves are now on their way to New York for three game date with the struggling Mets before heading home to finish up the first half prior to the All-star break. They will play 3 games against the Phillies and 3 with the Marlins.
That means the Braves have 9 games before they take a much deserved break. By tomorrow, we will learn which of the Bravos will be playing in Cleveland. I am pretty sure the Braves will be well represented, let’s hope none get hurt.

Hey Ber, on my health… Not sure at this point, going for anti-biotic infusions everyday but their seems to be some confusion amonst the doctors as to who’s patient I am… ??? It is getting old however and it is weighing on Josie a bit.

I hope B-Mac gets a call to play in the All-star game. I expect Realmuto will get the nod however. There still has to be a rep from each team and I believe the roster will be loaded with Dodgers and Cubs.

For some reason, my computer has done…better with the blog loading, but the last week, all the pics would take so long to fill in, that I would be reading a post, then it would drop below my view, and I was staring at posts made a week ago
well, everyone and their brother will be looking for pitching, and I read the tigers think they can get a haul like the ChiSox did for Quintana a few years ago, but the thing is Boyd has only been mediocre til this year, so…the Blue Jays and Giants will have more offers, if they don’t ask for the moon….I mean, you usually hear 1 top 100 prospect…then a mid level prospect….whatever that means…

A prospect that was either drafter past the 10th round or a free agent that is still in A ball so they have 4 or 5 years before they have to make a decision on. Also looks better the more bodies you get in return for your guy.
Sort of like playing a slot machine thinking the next quarter will hit the jackpot. Biggest return likely to be a couple of quarters to get two more plays.

Morning folks, great performance by Soroka and company last night against the Mutts. When I first saw the mound opponent for this game, I figured it would be a iffy game to win. Whoboy, did Austin Riley throw a monkey wrench into the works for DeGrome. Hey, Jacob pitched a good game, held the Braves to three runs but Soroka only game up two thanks to the continued good work by Swarzak in relief. I listened to the Mets broadcast for the most part last night to gain a prospective on their opinion of the young righty and the Braves. They were very high on both Soroka and the team. Kept talking about how young this team is and how it bodes well for their future.
Of course Freddie was Freddie last night and Markakis came through with an RBI too. Camargo iced the cake in the ninth with a 3 RBI double off the base of the right centerfield wall. It is must see TV… 🙂

So nice to see the future blossoming in the present right before our eyes, and at the same time seeing Ian Anderson tossing 7 no-no innings down in AA.
Ahhhh… feels pretty dang good.
Oh, and added another game to the division lead too. Not a bad night.

It seems like they are going forever…. Infusions are everyday but not always at the same time, like musical chairs… and add in seeing 4 different doctors now and they still don’t know the root cause of the problem. The incision from the surgery opened up yesterday and started draining. ICK!… Getting ready to leave now for St Mary’s for my daily infusion so there is always that to look forward to each day. 🙂
Okay, at lest the Braves keep winning, it might just be their year.

Gordon, I heard Buster Olney say that players were saying no one’s breaking pitches were breaking. They are wondering about the oddness of the shape of the stadium(semi-closed) had something to do with the issue…wind currents of the A/C, something like that….

Well, I guess it was bound to happen, the Mutts could not continue to lose forever and the Braves bullpen was due to cave. Twas fun for a while though. They finish the road trip at 6-4 which is still pretty darn good. I guess the problem with winning is you expect to do it every night.
So, looks like Calloway gets to keep his job one more day.

Oh yeah, Chad Sobotka was nails last night. Looks like he has gotten straightened out by his stint in Gwennett. Looks like the kid who wowed us last fall. Newk seemed to lose his focus last night in giving up a long homer in the 8th. About Minter. He looks great, getting two strikes on a batter and then loses the zone…. I know he does not have to throw three strikes in a row but I see it a lot with the Braves pitchers, they don’t want to challenge a batter, they are always trying to trick the hitter into swinging at a bad ball and those balls are not close enough to look like a strike.

Okay, the Braves and I had a much needed night off from baseball Monday night. Back in the swing tonight against the Phillies. The Phightn’s are fresh off a win against the fish Sunday but they still managed to look bad against them.
So, the Braves pen should be reset and ready to go for the week leading up to the All-star break. While I know it is a great honor for players to be chosen and participate, I am glad the majority of the team will have a 4 day break. The Bravos have a pretty stout road trip immediately after the break playing 3 in San Diego and then 3 in Milwaukee. Then come home for a 4 game set against the National who have had a bit of a resurgence of late.
So, 162 game schedule is half over but it doesn’t get any easier I don’t think.

PACHE has come a long way mind, but was not as advanced at the plate as WATERS starting out.

What a bummer.

It appears that the current edition of the “Bash Brothers” reside in Atlanta. Yes, good pitchers can get them out, marginal ones, not so much. 5 bombs in the game last night by the good guys. It’s a shame not all of you can watch this team on a nightly basis.
Soroka just did not have it going last night giving up 4 runs in the first inning on 6 singles. He recovered a bit going 4 2/3rds total when it looked like he would not make it out of the first. The offense picked him up however.

Okay, here is hoping “Good Julio” makes his appearance tonight. Need to leave a good impression on the home folks leading into the A/S break. That and staying ahead of the hard charging Nits. I recall the National announces opining after getting beat 2 out of 3 by the Braves that the current stretch of their schedule was an opportunity to make some gains in the east. Well, mission accomplished as they have got back to .500 and have caught and passed the Phillies. The Braves face a tough schedule post All-Star break in facing the Padres in San Diago for 3 (never an easy task for the Bravos) and then back to Wisconsin to take on the Brewers who are currently in first place in the NL Central.
The Nationals still have a stout lime up of starters and they appear to be getting their relief corps in order. John Sholtz has often said that the first 10 games following the break was super important as to how a team will fare in the 2nd half.
I still think the Braves need to add a veteran starter to the mix. While the kids are good, in order to be considered elite, you need an ace to lead the staff. That and young arms start to show signs of wear and tear come August and September.
Not saying that is what happened with young phenom Soroka last night but his velocity was a good 3 mph slower than it has been this season. I would be good with Roberts leaving young Matt on the bench in the All-Star game in Cleveland.

I watched last night’s game until the rain delay, work up for about 1 minute after the game resumed. I saw this morning that B-Mac had a walk off single in the bottom of the ninth for the 1-0 win.
Good Julio on the mound last night. Not perfect mind you but good enough to keep the fish from scoring. Marlins pitcher Yamamoto was stellar.. 6 innings of 2 hit ball and only one of those hits was of the hard hit verity.
This afternoon’s game should be a little bit easier sledding for the Bravos. Max Fried will once again ascend the hill for the Braves, Caleb Smith, a 27 year old lefty acquired from the Yankees and just reactivated from the IL will pitch for the Marlins.

Gil, same here…chronic insomnia (is it insomnia to fall asleep ok, but back to sleep 3-4 hours later when you have to use the restroom?) caught up to me…was dozing much of the game, and once it started to pour, and saw how long the 5mph storms rained on my side of town, decided enough was enough.
glad they won , so weird to see this offense almost shut out 2 nights in the same week.
Saw highlights after Yamamoto’s first game where he went 7 innings in a win against the cards. he got all choked up talking about sacrifices family had made, and what a dream come true to make it to the bigs…so, when not pitching against the braves, will root for him. Finally some positive comes out of the terrible trade the Marlins made with the Brewers for Yelich….but, the Marlins and especially their fans, both of them, are so happy with all the money they saved not having him in their outfield

DK looks sharp thus far. This is the guy I wanted on this staff. If he continues like this through his next handful of starts I wouldn’t mind hearing that he and the team are both open to an extension.

Wooo, what a game. Solid outing by DK, not so much by Sobatha but wow, did Charlie clutch make the play of the game with catch and outfield assist to prevent the fish from stinking up the game. Tough loss for the Marlins but would have been tougher for the Braves.
Now, take a few days off and come back refreshed….

But to be fair…
Hit #1 was weak contact that bled slowly into no-man’s-land between pitcher, 3B and SS. Hit #2 was a ground ball single that was only about 2 inches toward 2B from being a double play. Hit #3 was a bunt that was popped up over the charging infielders and pitcher. The only real hard hit ball in the inning was the line drive that resulted in Charlie’s phenomenal catch/throw.

Yes, one of the reasons I said the loss of the game would have been more devastating to the Braves. Luke is not your prototypical strike out closer. He lives for ground balls and weak contact. He got the ground balls but they were hit where they weren’t…
No question to me the play made by Clutch was one of the best I have ever seen, it ranks up there with the “Catch” made by Otis Nixon on VanSlyke’s home run ball. If the throw had not been perfect and I mean even an inch or two either way from where B-Mac caught it, the game would have been tied with runners on 2nd and 3rd and only one out.
That play cements Culbertson’s place in Braves lore if you ask me. Or at least until the next amazingly clutch thing he does…

Methinks it belongs with “Sid Slid”, “The Catch” by Otis Nixon and Francisco Cabrera’s clutch single which drove Sid in to win the 1992 NLCS… All are huge for Braves fans. For sure deserves at a minimum a bobble-head to commemorate the event.

sorry I missed the game, but glad for mlb’s quick pitch so I could see that AMAZING throw (and for once, the best play of the day, was actually ranked #1, I saw a completely crazy throw from some 3rd baseman a few weeks ago, not Nolan, and it didn’t even make their top 5) not bad play at all for a SS 😛

All in all, not terribly dissimilar…
Well, except that the Phillies gave up top pitching prospect Sixto Sanchez, young southpaw Will Stewart, and young major league catcher Jorge Alfaro to obtain JTR’s services through 2020. Oh yeah, there was also some int’l slot money sent as well. Sanchez is a big 19-year-old righty already throwing in triple digits. He was their #1 prospect. Stewart was their #18. (For perspective, that’d be like the Braves’ Ian Anderson and Huascar Ynoa.)
And Jorge Alfaro? How about .274/.317/.436, 10 HR, 30 RBI batting in the middle of an otherwise lean 2019 Marlins lineup.
I’m glad to have BMac and Flow. I’ll keep them along with Anderson, Ynoa and what was rumored to have been Austin Riley for he Braves. Props to AA for knowing when to say “NO”. As the old adage goes, some of the best deals a GM makes are those he doesn’t make.

Of course Realmuto has a better rate of throwing out potential base stealers but maybe not as important as it once was because the majority of stolen bases are on the pitcher, not the catcher. I think the intangibles on B-Mac are through the roof. Much more important to the Braves than Realmuto to the Phillies.
But to be honest, I would not have minded so much having Realmuto in a Braves uni. Maybe in 2021 when his contract is up with the Phillies if one of the young Braves prospects is not knocking on the door.
So, Homerun Derby tonight… I entered the contest with little real expectations of winning anything but if you don’t buy a ticket, there is zero chance of it.
Hint… always go for the guy who has been there before because they tend to be less nervous about it. Heck, I thought Freddie put up a good fight last year considering that home runs are not his forte. His just happen…

Sigh, another day gone…. This running to the doctors/infusions/hospitals is really getting old…. I wish they would do whatever they are going to do and let me get on with my life… It is getting to be hard on the wife if you know what I mean. On the bright side, trying out some restaurants I might not normally frequent. I did not realize the west end of Richmond had built up so much. It is like a completely new entire city…

Good morning all, I hope everyone is enjoying the break. I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to stay awake for the Padres’ series. Perhaps I shall watch delayed telecast but you cannot stay up past midnight and get up for 8 AM treatments.
A few comments about the Home-run Derby and the All-Star game.
You cannot compare what transpired Monday night with previous HRDs. Use to be you were allow only so many none home runs. Now, it is how many you can hit in 4 minutes. To be truthful, I was most impressed by Vlad Jr. and Joc Pederson by the shear numbers but Alonso was smart. He did not hit any more than he had to.
To me, Acuna Jr. was most impressive by his spray chart. Hitting baseballs to all fields. Amazing….
As for the All-Star game itself. Happy it no longer “counts”. It allows for me to just enjoy the game and root for everyone. I thought Soroka was most interesting pitcher of the night. He did not strike out anyone but did what he does, allows at’em balls and weak contact.
So, until fans get past the fantasy league mentality, the Sorokas of the world face an upward battle for recognition. “Just Win Baby”…

A combined 32-hit slug-fest ends in a nightmare 15-12 loss to POP KNIGHTS as “the Natural” LUIS ROBERT goes on a two homer, 3-5, game tear with seven RBI’s.
ENDER INCIARTE arrives in AAA with a resounding thud as he face plants in the lead-off slot with only one BB to show for five AB’s.
RHSP BRYSE WILSON [L 4-7}, relief LH THOMAS BURROWS, and RH JEREMY HERNANDEZ are absolutely destroyed by CHARLOTTE bats, especially ROBERT.
RH’ers WES PARSONS and Rafa De PAULA finish out the night holding the KNIGHT’s offense at bay for 2.1 IP, while waiting for the offense to catch up.
One STRIPER run scores in the ninth, but it’s too little, and too late.

Wow, Alex Jackson has 17 HR’s and 39 RBI’s? Homer number is impressive, esp. for a catcher….
ADAM DUVALL….can’t believe some team desperate for an outfielder hasn’t asked the braves….you know, offer some raw A ball pitcher for him…his numbers seem to be going downhill as the year goes on…well, B.A. I mean….has to be hard to have played several years in the bigs, then play more than half the year in AAA playing meaningless games, so to speak.

Well, the unofficial second half begins tonight and the Braves are certainly in the catbird seat as they sit on a 6 game lead over the rival Nats in the surprising NL East. But alot can change over the next 3 weeks as the season’s sole trade deadline looms on July 31. Now that the All-Star break is over, the front office action should begin to heat up all across the baseball landscape. Of course, we all know that the real frenzy won’t occur until the last 72 hours as all sellers will hold out for the best deal in the last days unless blown away by an over pay early.
A-Train has his radar firmly fixed on pitching as the Braves already have a a potent and deep lineup, and arguably the best bench in baseball. At the same time, the rotation is still in flux and is rife with question marks despite the recent addition of Dallas Keuchel. And God bless young All-Star Mike Soroka.
So who is available? Well, we’ve all heard the Madison Bumgarner rumors since the offseason. And while I believe there are still some pros with MadBum, he’s a 2nd half rental that will still carry a hefty prospect cost. Zack Wheeler is also churning through the rumor mill. Alex went after him last season, but he’s now also a half season rental, on a division rival, and the prospect cost would be heftier than MadBum. Said mill is also churning out the obligatory Marcus Stroman connection, and a hot rumor yesterday morning said the Jays and Braves were in discussions. That was subsequently denied by both sides though. Still… he is a pretty good “fit” and has a long connection with his former GM. The hot young name, and the latest to be directly tied to Los Bravos, is Detroit youngster Matthew Boyd. My fear with him is that he’s their latest version of Michael Fulmer and they will try to extract a premium return while his value is at its peak. And what of Michael Fulmer today..? My money is on the guy we haven’t heard of yet. It’s AA’s modus operandi. Name to not sleep on: Zack Greinke. Once again an All-Star, the enigmatic Greinke is a major salary drag on the non-contending Snakes. A connection here might be a way for Thoppy to lessen the acquisition cost in prospects and utilize some of the club’s infamous “financial flexibility”. The more money he is willing to cover, the less prospect capital would go the other way.
A quick glance at the bullpen might give cause to place it as a priority over the rotation, but the reality is that since the arrival of Anthony Swarzak from Seattle, the Braves bullpen has been among the best in baseball. That’s a little misleading, though, as most bullpens in baseball have alot of needs and the Braves are no different. Luke Jackson is “getting by” as the defacto closer, but he’s no closer. And the Braves still need a guy they can count on to slam the door in the 9th.
Possibilities? The Giants’ Will Smith is the biggest available name, but will also be the subject of the biggest bidding war. The Pirates’ Felipe Vazquez has been mentioned, but I’m not sure the Bucs view themselves as sellers. The guy that seemingly makes the most sense is the Jays’ Ken Giles, a former top closer having a strong comeback year. He is a good fit in a similar vein to his teammate Stroman. One possible name to watch for is SD’s Kirby Yates. He’s a pretty good veteran closer signed only through 2020 on a team that is not poised to overtake the mighty Dodgers anytime soon. They’d be foolish not to listen to offers on him.
As much as we will begin to hear the beloved local ballclub connected to a myriad of names over the next 29 days, I defer to a quote from our new Homeboy Upstairs himself, who says (and I’m paraphrasing), “If you’ve heard us connected in a rumor, then you can pretty much count it out.” He runs the tightest front office among fellow GM’s, and any accurate rumor would have to come from the other side.
Still… it ought to be fun trying to keep up. It’s one of my favorite times of the year. 😀

As far as the pen goes, ]I’m all in on WIL SMITH.
With a legitimate closer this pen would look quite different, a solid asset rather that a get by one.
