#191: MLB 2020: The Season Made-For-TV

Vox O’Reason

Baseball continues to work on ways to open for games in an effort to retain as much of their TV revenue as possible. And before this post gets any further down the paragraph, let’s be clear about something. Do not fool yourselves; this is not about fans, this is not about tradition, this is not about players. This is about TV contracts… and rightfully so. TV revenue is the lifeblood of MLB in the modern era. If we want to see this game we love keep moving forward in the form that we are currently enjoying, we should all want to see the TV money continue flowing in. Every power-plant has a primary engine that makes everything else turn, and with baseball it’s the TV revenue. This season, if there is one, will be made-for-TV. Disclaimer: No fans will be harmed in the making of this season.

So that point accepted, how can baseball get going and get in as many games as possible while still keeping one eye glancing in the periphery toward player health and safety?

The talking suits at MLB are quick to point out that the schemes being considered “are not plans”. In fact, they are adamant that these are simply “ideas” that are constantly evolving. So in that vein, lets lay out the “ideas” as we have come to understand them.

Idea A was to play all the games in Arizona in the 10 Phoenix-area spring training ballparks, plus Chase Field. This would minimize travel, and theoretically exposure for players, since all 11 of those venues are within a 40-minute drive at maximum. But that <strike>plan</strike>, er… *idea* was fraught with many logistical hurdles. How do 30 teams play 15 match-ups in just 11 parks on a revamped schedule that needs to maximize the number of games in a condensed schedule? And how do you house 30 teams in 11 locations that were not designed to include dormitories?

That gave birth to Idea B, which was to split the league onto both coasts and let teams utilize their own spring training facilities in both ARI and FLA, plus the home parks for the D’backs, Rays and Marlins. This would result in defacto Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues for the regular season, with some configuration of league winners and runners up coming together for playoffs late in the year. Since both ARI and FLA have relatively mild fall and winter months, you could actually run games into October and November without game temps resembling Chicago and Denver in March. But as with Idea A, Idea B also has hurdles. Two leagues split into 15 team segments results in an odd team for each that would have to sit out every day on both sides. And the parks in FLA are a little more spread out with most team sites up and down the Gulf coast, with a handful across the state on the Atlantic coast. And of course, there is the infamous FLA weather.

The new idea being floated calls for a 3rd “hub” to be employed, that being in Texas. Yes, the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues would be joined by the… Longhorn League? Cowboy League? Oil Rig League? But I digress… Back on point, Idea C would split the league into three 10 team divisions that would use Phoenix (ARI), Arlington (TEX) with its surrounding area, and the gulf coast of FLA (plus Miami) as their “hubs”, with the divisions being distributed according to geography, and with some configuration of league winners and runners up coming together for playoffs late in the year. In other words, the 10 eastern-most teams would play in FLA, 10 western-most teams would play in ARI, and the rest would gather in TEX. This scheme would seem the most workable since it would put less of a logistical strain on each hub, would employ 3 even number subsets allowing all teams to have a match-up each day, and also reduce the chances of a single weather system wiping out half the possible games for an entire day or more.

I’ll be honest… for me personally, I realize that any type of season carried out in 2020 will be a strange metamorphosis of the typical season I’m familiar with. It’s simply not going to resemble anything I have come to know as “normal”. So that said, I’m open to and accepting of something that is fresh and entertaining. And I’m open to and accepting of things that are very non-traditional, given the circumstances. Certainly we’ll see a universal DH for this season. Likely, we’ll see creative uses of pitching staffs, including 6-man rotations, “openers”, etc. And since there will be more games played and less off-days, there will likely be expanded rosters with more players getting into the games, including some guys that might have opened the year on a minor league roster in a normal year. This is even more important given that minor league seasons are likely done for the year. All that together will make for a very unique season. And I’ll be perfectly happy with whatever form it takes if it gets the season rolling. The only thing harder to find in 2020 than toilet paper is live sports. I’m paying for Hulu Live for no other reason than live sports. For the last 2 months, that’s been the equivalent of tossing away $50 like an empty bottle of hand sanitizer. I need to get something for my hard earned cash. I’ll even watch live bowling if they’ll get something going. But again, I digress…

So for the Braves, what does this mean?

Well, a quick geographical survey would suggest that the Braves would play in a Grapefruit League that would consist of the Braves, Rays, Marlins, O’s, Nats, Phillies, Bosox, both NY teams, and the Jays. That would be really tough, but would also be really fun.

And our Braves are actually constructed quite well to play under the proposed modified rules. We have our DH in Marcell Ozuna. We have youth, depth and versatility to deal with double-headers and limited off days. We have 7 capable starting pitchers vying for 5 rotation spots, so expanding to 6 is easier than for most. We have the depth in our bullpen to cover 4 innings without hitting the panic button. And we have the talent at the top of our minor league system to fill the additional roster spots without skipping a beat.

Yep, this fan is ready to see 2020 begin to take form. It’s appointment TV.

Thanks, VOR! Excellent thoughts. I really don’t see a “real” semblance of any type season being played. (The graphics depart department completely struck out on ideas for photos, illustrations, et al for this. Of course, all of them are working from home……) 😀

Well, surely as soon as I publish something with the ARI/TEX/FLA plan, er… idea, a new report pops up that conflicts with it. But here’s the thing… how credible is that new information? See what you think…

Bob Nightengale of USA Sports wrote yesterday that the realignment would not place Atlanta in the East, rather taking them to the Central. It makes very little sense to me, but here is the alignment as he has published it:

Here’s a look at the possible realignment structure:

EAST: New York Yankees and Mets, Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins

CENTRAL: Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins, Atlanta Braves/b>, Detroit Tigers

WEST: Los Angeles Dodgers and Angels, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners

Essentially he swapped PIT and ATL. And that really does not make any sense considering PIT plays with those other Central teams and ATL plays with all the other East teams.

But here is the other thing that is weird…

Neither Texas nor Houston would play in the Texas-based league. So if the justification for them being in the West is that they both play in the AL West, then why is Atlanta being pushed into the Central and Pittsburgh being pushed into the East?

Tell ya what… I’m sticking to my guns that ATL will stay in the East. What they do with Texas and Houston is really not my concern.

Alan Carpenter of Tomahawk Take has compiled a summary of the currently learned pl… uh, idea. The particulars as have been learned (leaked) are as follows:

    — 7-day notice to players and auxiliary personnel before restarting.
    — 3 weeks of re-Spring Training.
    — A season start date somewhere in the late-June/early July time frame.
    — 3 “hub sites” with 10 teams apiece.
    — All hub site teams play within their new division – no crossovers.
    — If conditions allow, a changeover to using regular MLB cities could take place at some point

He also addresses the odd swapping of the Braves and Pirates:

It’s a mash-up of the AL/NL Central divisions, though Atlanta and Pittsburgh are swapped out for the sake of geographic proximity.

Honestly, if that’s the correct grouping, I’d also suggest that the Braves might have been moved over to make [the proposed Central] division look at least somewhat more balanced.

[The proposed East] is a fairly tough top 5-7 clubs… imagine if Atlanta were also in there. So Braves fans? Be happy: you’re clearly the favorites in this new MLB Central.

One cannot also help but wonder if this happens as proposed, would it be a catalyst to retain the universal DH and to consider a league-wide realignment of teams into more geographic balance regardless of American/National League designation? Those are thoughts that have been bandied about before, but considered too radical to be seriously considered. But after being put into practical use for even a partial season, they may no longer be viewed as radical.

Thanks for your continued insight Vee. I can deal with a different allignment, after all, the Braves are just a hop skip and a jump away from the Central Time Zone anyway. Certainly no cake walk facing the Cards, Brewers and Twins. Still fun to see some different faces and it will make the play-offs much more interesting.

With air travel, distance between clubs is not the issue it once was, not like they are going to be riding public transport a lot.

Putting everyone on HCQ prophetically would not be such a bad idea either.

Now, something I bet no one has publicly considered, if clubs stop paying players, does that mean they can declare as free agents? Asking for a friend… 🙂

Count Braves Prime Minister Terry McGuirk as one who is not a fan of the way the proposed 2020 realignment of teams has been delineated. The AJC’s Mark Bradley quoted McGuirk thus:

Of such a shift, Braves chairman Terry McGuirk said Thursday morning: “That is not happening. There is no possibility of that happening. It has never been discussed by Major League Baseball.”

Why is McGuirk’s panties in such a wad? Well… he doesn’t really give a good explanation other than, “We live in the East. We play in the East. Our travel will be in the East. We’re an Eastern division team, and that’s where we’ll stay.”

Well, I’m glad he cleared that up. Except his argument doesn’t have any factual basis.

Truth is, the Braves’ home park in NE Atlanta is closer to Cincinnati (460 miles) than it is to Tampa (475 miles) And they’re closer to St. Louis (537 miles) than they are to Miami (682 miles). Closer to Chicago (699 miles) than to Philly or New York (784 & 873 miles respectively).

I could do a breakdown of all the teams in the proposed East and Central, but you already get the idea. Even if they can get this thing rolling in teams’ home parks, as is the real goal ultimately, travel distances are not at the heart of this as Atlanta is no closer to the majority of the East teams as they are to the majority of the Central teams.

So why is Top Dog Terry so adamant? There’s no clear answer.

Travel distance aside, there is another compelling reason to want the Braves in the proposed MLB Central for 2020. if you take a look at the teams on the field, the Braves stack up better in the proposed Central than they do in the proposed East. In fact, I’d say they would be the clear favorite out of the gate in the Central, with Josh Donaldson’s Twins about the closest in talent. The Cards will be good, but they have holes. Same with the Cubs and Indians. And I’d love to see the up and coming White Sox and all their young talent.

Those reasons alone are enough for this fan to hope the Braves play in the MLB Central for 2020. But if I’m perfectly honest, the same old NL East teams are beginning to be a little boring to me. Does that mean I do not appreciate the Braves+Phils or Braves+Mets rivalry? Of course not. But I think we could also have a pretty good rivalry with the Cards, especially after the 2019 NLDS. And I know we could mix it up with Cleveland and Minnie after our classic World Series battles in the 90’s.

For the first 10 or 15 years I followed the Braves, they were in the NL West so playing in the Central won’t be all that big a deal, hey, it’s baseball, I’m good with it, besides, it will allow me to follow some new and different players. I just hope MLB expands the roster to around 30 players.

Per multiple notable sources, the owners voted today to approve a plan to open the 2020 season. Well, technically they approved a proposal of a plan that will be presented to the MLBPA. This will be the starting point for the 2 sides to negotiate a plan to start the season. Does that mean we’ll have baseball back soon?

    Hold the presses…

The owners do not want to pay full-year salaries to players for less than full-year services. Not to mention they are not receiving revenues from empty ballparks from which to pay said salaries. Their proposal actually includes a creative revenue sharing plan to try to balance the interests of both sides. That said, the union prez has already said that they will categorically reject any such plan.

In other words, instead of looking forward to teams battling between the lines again, we’ll get to watch the drama unfold as 2 groups of millionaires and billionaires battle over their respective slices of a smaller pie.

Actually, I feel sorry for the younger guys who haven’t gotten “broke off” yet. Those are the ones who will suffer most from the greed of the “upper crust”.

Meanwhile, my personal interest continues to shrink as life continues without either the billionaires or the millionaires. I find I have not suffered at all.

From what I can glean from all the different talking heads (typing heads), the owners are proposing 1) a 82-game regular season schedule using home parks, 2) playing exclusively within the league division and opposite league division, essentially travelling only within your geographic region, 3) October playoffs expanded to include 7 teams per league, and 4) a 50/50 revenue share system between owners and players.

The players will almost certainly balk at the revenue plan and probably want more regular-season games which equals more service time.

      Stay tuned…

More details have trickled through on the owners’ proposal. The universal DH will be in play; that’s a given. Also, any team that plays in a state that remains shut down has the option to play at their spring site instead. In the case of Toronto (Canada is shut down), they will have to play in their spring site in FLA. I have heard that the idea that was floated of having ATL and PIT switch divisions is not dead. Active roster sizes will be expanded, but those numbers are TBD. It could expand to 30, but could also include the entire 40-man roster. I read one writer speculate 50, but that seems unreasonable to me. Spring Training Part 2 would last about 3 weeks and include no games. Teams will be given the option to conduct their 3 week “second spring” in their home parks or their spring training site as they choose. Players will be tested under the same rigor as the revived Korean Baseball Organization. And as the KBO has stipulated, if any 1 player tests positive for COVID, the whole league shuts down for 3 weeks.

There is one very serious part to this plan that will trump (no pun intended… well maybe a little) everything else. Even if agreed upon by both owners and players, it must still be given the greenlight by the US gov’t. That is not a given at all.

    Stay tuned…

As Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association continue their standoff over player compensation in a shortened 2020 season without fans in attendance, it seems neither side is prepared to budge.

That is the first sentence in an update published yesterday by MLBTR’s Steve Adams.

Kinda says it all without even having to read any further.

Here’s the thing. Even a dangerously obsessed Braves fan like me is finding other things to occupy the void. And I’m enjoying those other things. Alot.

Go ahead, billionaires and millionaires. Keep arguing over percentages of slices of an over-abundant pie. Meanwhile, Joe and Jane Fan, who are hoping to be able to go to work in a couple of weeks to put food on the table for the mini-Fans, are becoming increasingly detached from you in your ivory-tower fantasy world. And when you do finally decide to come back, we’re gonna give you a collective middle finger after having seen yours directed toward us by your gluttonous behavior. I personally find your greed not only offensive but insulting.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale filed a story a little while ago apparently after reading the ol’ B&S earlier today. I have pasted a few excerpts below:

Stop it. Enough already. There are 36 million Americans who filed for unemployment the past two months during the coronavirus pandemic. Do you think they really care who is right or who is wrong as owners and players debate the economics of playing baseball without fans? The last thing anyone can stomach is listening to billionaires and millionaires arguing over money before they can start the 2020 baseball season.

If there is no Major League Baseball played this year because the owners and players can’t agree on salaries, it would make the cancellation of the 1994 World Series feel like a doubleheader rainout in June. It would destroy the sport. So please, now is not the time to try to win a public-relations battle with the fans, leaking internal documents to the news media, or waging a war of words to legal teams. No one wants to hear it. Not now.

It’s still unfathomable, no matter how much the rhetoric is put on public display, to believe that baseball won’t be played this summer. It will happen. Really, there is no choice. But the clock is ticking. It’s time for baseball to save itself before it’s too late.

It may already be too late as far as the fans are concerned. The one that I have personal knowledge of is teetering on the edge. Good thing he’s a patient fella. But, as Nightengale said… the clock is ticking.

yeah V, I wasn’t even aware of most of this crap….
might even be the first time ever, that I am more on the owners side, than the players. I mean, players want fill salary for half a season work or else? even when games start playing no fans in stands…no concession funds, no parking lot moola or like Atlanta, all the Restaurants/gift shops around the stadium . Umm err….turn off the fans now, and you might never get a contract beyond one year, as fans just aren’t going to support the game (and who knows when everyone will feel good about sitting sweaty body next to sweaty body)
like you said V, I may have been a tick less obsessed about baseball than you are (but hey, I have watched a braves game, a hour of highlights, and then a west coast game, a time or three 😉 ) but baseball was such a big part of my life, but after this long….just not all that interested. the strike of 1994, that bled into the beginning of 1995 kept me from watching the braves in 1995 (What a year to skip, huh? I was working at Borders that night when someone told me they had won the W.S.) I broke down in 1996 and watched again…but if the fans ruin what there is of this season…I just don’t know…

Much like lawyers in tort cases, the only people getting rich are the lawyers. So, it is sad the baseball can’t see past their own nose to spite their own face.

I have a friend that says we are in the end times. I used to argue with him, at least somewhat….certain things have to happen first, but man…..EVERYTHING is off right now.
Dumb and dumber indeed! Baseball is destroying itself, and they don’t even realize it.
Football, Football! Drew Brees said something completely sane, and rational, so naturally, he is the worst person in the world for defending the flag and the U.S. and had to apologize for saying it, and some thug football players (soon to be in jail no doubt) won’t even forgive him for the heinous crime of loving his country! Cannot wait to see entire teams take a knee, or turn their back on the flag. Football ratings will tank, but they will still let the thugs rule the day, and lose billions, rather then tell them that just like anyone else with a job, you cannot protest while at work!
Sacramento Kings announcer since the mid/late 80s was fired for saying get this, all lives matter! What a terrible, terrible man….
Every fake tough guy general that worked in the Trump administration, is stabbing him in the back, and getting praised for it (in some quarters) Kind of wimps that would sell their country out for 50 bucks! they would have done well in the Vichy government.
Riots equal protesting! Destroying businesses is patriotic! you cannot stop violent protests!!!!! as that brilliant expert on global warming would say, HOW DARE YOU!!!!!
W, who I used to think was actually a decent man, but now I know better, loves getting respected by the press and liberals that HATED HIM for 8 years….so, he talks about systemic racism. Ok W, what did you do in any way to make minorities lives better, import a bunch of cheap labor from overseas to take the jobs minorities would have otherwise had a chance at?
Now I see serious efforts to defund the police taking root! L.A. to cut 150 Mil from the police budget, are you kidding me?
all police should take a week off nationwide, just to show what would happen then…..gah!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry, my Dad is dealing with several health issues, (some the experts can’t begin to get a handle on so far) and it has worn me to a nub, and then to see our wonderful country try to commit suicide because of one (well perhaps 4) really stupid, really racist cops?

You are too young to remember the 60s but the media did the same thing to make people thing everyone was opposed to the military. Yes, some were but the “silent majority” was lurking.

The media love controversy, if there isn’t any occurring naturally, they will create it. Keep everything stirred up, that’s their motto. So keep the faith Ber. You are not alone in your opines.

Today’s update: there is no update. Nothing has changed. Why? Because the 2 “negotiating” sides are not negotiating toward a common goal. If each side’s goal was to return to the field, they would work out a way to return to the field. But each side’s goal is to take home as much money as possible… and that makes it anything but a common interest. And I am rapidly losing interest in them EVER returning to the field.

First, while there is no stated “drop dead” date to get things back on the move again, any person with more than a handful of functioning gray matter cells can tell you they must return to real games by the first week of July. Among their most glaring sticking points, aside from the money tug-of-war, has been the number of games and the dates of the World Series. And obviously the longer it takes them to get back on the field the more it squeezes the number of games possible and pushes any playoff dates further away. Duh. And if they have to open their regular season in around July 4 as they say they desire, they better kick-start their spring training V2.0 now… like this week. And even at that, what will that leave us with? It will leave us with sloppy games and unsettled pitching efforts strung together by 5 or 6 pitchers.

    Yay. Little League on TV.

Second, and probably more importantly, even if they can come to some weak accord to get 2020 actually off life support, where will that leave us when the CBA ends after 2021? Again, it doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to understand that any semblance of a season in 2020 will have effects that extend into 2021. And when the labor agreement expires at that season’s end, there will still be plenty of animosity lingering among both camp’s from the rancor and discord being displayed for all to see now.

In the opinion of this humble observer, what we are witnessing right now is the wide slow swirl you see at the top of the bowl right after the handle is pulled.

And it ain’t gonna get any better.

I still love my Braves, or at least the concept of what I think/thought is “my” team. But they honestly couldn’t give two craps about me. I have realized in the baseball (all pro sports) void in which we are currently existing that I can actually live without them. And the sun still rises and sets every single day. And it’s not bad. Not bad at all.

If they come back, will I? I can honestly say for the first time, “I don’t know.” I’m pretty much enjoying this life as it is without them.

We’ll see how it goes with the college game this fall. For sure, I think the protesters have put a folk in the Covid lockdown… Pretty tough to justify it’s continuation.

Players should take this and go back to work, otherwise the Commissioner will, within his power, declare that MLB will hold the dreaded 42 game season at which point all parties lose, most especially the fans.

At the very least, players should not just outright dismiss it…which has been their tactic thus far. If they want to save face (and the game), they should at least engage in dialogue over this proposal, which is the best they’ve seen thus far.

MLBPA has counter-offered, and they seem to at least be in the same area code. Perhaps the 2 sides can come so some pseudo-agreement after all and get the ball rolling (pun fully intended.)

Settle on 82 games – half a typical regular season – and split the net profits (not revenues) 50/50. Leave it up to the union to pay their members in any sliding scale of their choice. Add a couple more Wild Card teams to eliminate the single game play-in format and form a complete additional round of playoffs for additional TV revenue, That could be turned around to cover the additional playoff bonuses. Am I being too simplistic?

I meant to say, 81 games, which is 162 divided by 2. But the midpoint between MLB’s 76 proposed games and MLBPA’s proposed 89 games is 82.5. 81 or 84 is probably the end goal of both sides anyway – each being divisible by 3, the typical number of games in a series. So you could schedule 27 three-game series (81 games), but that means you can’t get an even home/home split. I personally could live with 84. In my humble opinion, anything less than 81 – half a typical regular season – cheapens the whole shebang.

And I think they should schedule intentional double-headers as often as feasible. Having the expanded rosters and proposed taxi squad allows this to happen without taxing the players. And given the absence of ticket sales anyway. it has zero effect on the revenues. Play 7 games a week, with 1 scheduled 2fer and 1 scheduled day off. You could start on July 10 and finish the regular season in exactly 12 weeks, or Sept. 30, then you have the entire month of October for playoffs… the way it should be.

Makes too much sense so I doubt they will go for it… Common sense and reason are seldom terms ever heard or headed in labor negotiation. Speaking from experience.

True fact: I was once on strike for almost 6 moths over a 25 cents an hour. (I worked another job the entire time as a welder on a bridge construction crew) I got laid off from that job two days before I was re-called from the strike. NO VACATION FOR ME…. Lesson learned, nobody wins during or after a strike but sometimes it is the only recourse to let everyone know it is on the table.

Maybe we should ask the President to step in and hammer out a deal.

If anyone really cares, the Braves took a college pitcher with their Round 1 pick (#25) last night. If you believe the pundits, the Braves took a “fast riser” and “high ceiling” pitcher that the team hopes will sign under-slot allowing them more flexibility in today’s rounds. (The Braves entered the draft with the 3rd lowest bonus pool total in the majors.)

Jared Shuster is a lefty starter out of Wake Forest who made some mechanical adjustments in the Cape Cod League that added 5 mph (now throws 95-97) to his fastball and took his changeup from “good” to “exceptional”. He also has a good slider that needs refining in the minors, but is still usable as an occasional offering to keep hitters from sitting on his fastball. All indications are that the 21-year-old could bypass the rookie levels and be fast-tracked toward the higher levels.

More specifics on Shuster courtesy of Gabe Burns:
He stands 6’3″ at 210 lbs and has drawn comparisons both in stature and style to Braves vet Cole Hamels.
His “lauded” changeup produces a 60% swing/miss rate.
The Mass. native grew up idolizing Braves’ HOF lefty Tom Glavine.
Braves VP of scouting Dana Brown suggests Shuster could start at a higher level in the minors given his college experience and “strike-throwing propensity”.

As for today’s rounds, more Burns: The Braves have three more picks through the shortened five-round draft: No. 97, No. 126, No. 156. The team forfeited its second rounder in signing reliever Will Smith but gained an additional pick when slugger Josh Donaldson rejected their qualifying offer and signed with Minnesota.

    Just an observation…

Given the fact that the 2020 draft is only 5 rounds in total, the room for error is really thin, especially after Round 1. I think that’s why you saw the Braves go with a college pitcher already, and I think that’s why you’ll probably see more of the same. They may take a college hitter with power, but I don’t think you’ll see any reaches out of the draft at all. I believe this may be the draft that is heavy on “high floor” players who are signable. Heavy emphasis should be made on the word “signable”. Any miss will be greatly magnified.

    That is all.

For some reason I feel a real lack of enthusiasm this season over the draft. I suppose all those kids were once signed in the lower rounds are now ripe for the picking as free agents, only question is where do you play them with the push to shut down the minor leagues? Asking for a friend…

Bryce Elder may be the steal of the draft for the Braves… and most problematic to sign. That’s the only reason he dropped to 156. Word is he needs “the right fit” to leave UTexas. In other words, it’ll take an overpay in bonus.

Every so often, you get two sides who are genuine in their desire to make a deal but it is truly rare. T some point the commissioner will have to step in so both sides can claim whatever happens wasn’t their fault. I HATE POLITICS….

First, any owner who cries that he’s not making a profit on his baseball team is full of more crap than a CNN broadcast. Let me make that clear. There is not one innocent party in this sham.

Second, I’d like to know the median amount of money already earned by the union reps from each team. I would be willing to step out on a limb and say that most of them if not all have already made their first big deal and could live a reasonably comfortable lifestyle (wisely, of course) if they never had to work another day in their lives.

Who loses in this great war of posturing? Well, my first inclination is to say the fans. But the reality is that we fans will actually see the sun rise tomorrow. I know I will. In fact, this fan has learned he’s not as attached to the suddenly detestable pro sport as I once thought I might be. In fact, I’m not sure I can even watch it ever again without a certain level of disgust. I had the opportunity to watch an hour or so of a MLB replay yesterday and never even gave it a consideration. In fact, I had a slight recoil when I saw it on the TV directory. It will be a while before I can in good conscience watch another ML broadcast. It might come back in time, but not anytime soon. I do know this much… I will never spend another one of my own personal dollars in a ML stadium. It won’t happen. Period.

Now… the real victims (and I use that word loosely) in all this selfishness are the youngsters who are trying to get to The Show or who are still playing on rookie deals. Those are the guys who are suffering right now. The minor league guys were already treading water, and the young major leaguers better have had wise saving habits. And I can almost guarantee you that none of these youngsters had a voice in the nonsense that’s being called “negotiations”.

Funny thing about negotiations… it’s typically 2 sides working to accomplish a common goal. But in our current society, and especially the current climate in this country, the only goals being worked toward are personal. Each side, and each guy, wants what each guy wants. And that makes it an impossible task to agree upon. If both sides truly wanted to get to the same goal, they’d get there. But they really don’t. They al want to accomplish their own agendas and they really don’t care about collateral damage.

I think that might become my new handle: Voice of Collateral Damage. If I cared enough to exert the effort, I’d make that change. But MLB isn’t worth the extra keystrokes.

I can’t believe how many days it has been since I have even checked out this blog! Between my Dad’s health of late, and our country being destroyed by radicals that hate her….I guess it slipped my mind.
Nothing to give me hope here. And how wonderful it would be to have some part of life be nearly normal again! Baseball might even become the most popular sport in the country again, at least for a few months
but, no….doesn’t look to be happening.
And the more I think about it…perhaps it’s just for the best for this to be a lost season, ya know?
are you aching to see a young kid with a head full of mush, take a knee during the anthem? Every team bend over backwards to say B L M on the field, in the stands, in the sky above??? See a team try to honor the military, the police, and see the team get booed? Or the Military and police????Not be brother!
So, let baseball die this year. left the NFL and NBA go FULL B L M and find that ratings after a quick boost, drop into HGTV territory. Just wait til College football teams start having players/fans act up and no one come to game, or watch them on TV! Let them ruin themselves.
Then, come next spring training, perhaps (there’s that word again) Lord willing, the world will spin correctly on it’s axis again, and baseball will pick up where it left off….

I’m trying to detach, but finding it difficult. I still am keeping up with the goings on because I cannot seem to turn it off completely.

    Anyway… if anyone still cares…

The Braves have now come to agreement on contracts with 3 of their 4 draft picks, including their top 3 picks.

Round 1 pick Wake Forest P Jared Shuster agreed to an underslot bonus amount of $2,197,500 (slot 25 = $2,740,300).
Round 3 pick Michigan OF Jesse Franklin agreed to an underslot bonus amount of $497,500 (slot 97 = $599,100).
Round 4 pick Clemson P Spencer Strider had previously agreed to a full slot bonus amount of $451,800 (slot 126).

It is widely expected that it will take all of their bonus savings to ink Round 5 pick Texas P Bryce Elder. SI’s Bill Shanks on Elder:

Elder is 6-foot-2, 220 pounds and is 21 years old. MLB ranked him as the 109 best prospect heading into the draft, and draft analyst Jim Callis believed the Braves got a great value pick for someone he projected going in the third round.

Callis said Elder has one of the “highest floors” for pitchers in this draft and a “high reliability he’s going to be at least a back-end starter.”

Elder, who is originally from Decatur, Tex., reportedly has an excellent slider. He’s a sinker, two-seam fastball pitcher with ordinary velocity that ranges from 88-95 mph. Callis listed Elder as having one of the four best sliders of the pitchers in this year’s draft.

The Braves gave up their Round 2 pick in signing RP Will Smith.

That’s okay Vee, I feel your pain. 🙂 Like everything else in our lives, things change. Some change is good, some is bad, some is very bad… Still, I am glad for these young men that they will have reaped some reward for their baseball skills. I would have loved to have a signing bonus, my bonus was , “congratulations, you now have a job”. “Now get to work…”

Like I have said, at some point baseball will return. Just as soon as the powers that be figure out a way that it won’t reward DJT.

So, any day now I look for baseball players to cave because after all, it is the owners who have the deeper pockets and they are writing off their losses in next year’s tax returns as we speak.

I’ll be perfectly honest about this… I could not care less if any player wishes to take a knee on the field. More power to them. I don’t have to like it, but it doesn’t matter what I do and don’t like. It’s their right to do so personally, and I wouldn’t take that away from them any more than I want them to take my rights away from me. But it does taint the game I love when I see it being used for personal reasons. What if I sought to preach a message of salvation through Jesus to the crowd of 40K fans before each Sunday game? Think it would be warmly received? Not hardly. But I also wouldn’t think to hijack people’s pastime for my own personal agenda, either. Nobody wants to be slapped upside the head unexpectedly.

And all of this is simply the symptoms of the real problem which is a world slipping away from a moral standard. For me, that moral standard is my belief in Jesus Christ as my Savior, and by extension the Bible which I believe to be the complete and inerrant word of God. But just because I believe that doesn’t mean you have to. I’d love it if you did because I think you’re eternity is doomed if you don’t, but we can have that conversation privately if you’d like. After all, if I saw a truck careening out of control toward you, what kind of person would I be if I didn’t try to keep it from hitting you? Same concept, just on an eternal scale. But I digress…

So to be clear… I won’t personally over-react and lash out at those who don’t believe the same that I do. I can’t force my belief system on anyone else and would be nothing short of arrogant to believe I could. And I won’t expect anyone else to feel about the current state of things the same as I do either. That’d be equally arrogant.

But it does all make me miss the former innocence what used to be our national pastime. And I blame social media and the “digital mob” for it all. All innocence is lost. That’s the unintended consequence of unbridled social communication. Welcome to “woke”. God save us all.

And for the record, I’ll be surprised if they actually play a game in 2020. I just don’t believe it’ll happen. Too many perceived health variables and too many players opting out, which will only increase. As Ber said, they could start only to stop again. No way they can even play the token 60 games they’re trying to schedule, right? What’s the point?

I know the Dodgers are ecstatic about that Mookie Betts trade now, right?

And I hate it for players like Freddie Freeman who are right in the middle of their prime years. This might have been his best year and the one that finally elevated him into the game’s elite and put him in future HOF conversations… but we’ll never know. What about veteran players on the cusp of retirement? Maybe players who are great players but needed one more dominant season to be considered a candidate for the HOF? Albert Pujols is a lock, but is Adam Wainright? Our own Cole Hamels also comes to mind. Those guys aren’t getting any younger and the clock isn’t waiting around for the “all clear” signal.

I could not care less if any player wishes to take a knee on the field. More power to them. I don’t have to like it, but it doesn’t matter what I do and don’t like. It’s their right to do so personally, and I wouldn’t take that away from them any more than I want them to take my rights away from me.
ah, but can you…at work? Cuz, if you can, everyone can, not just pampered athletes . That would be a fun day at the mall eh? (like anyone can or wants to go to malls anymore)

Most of you might know by now… Freddie tested positive for Covid-19 last night. He has had body aches, headaches, chills and a high fever since Thursday. He is someone who literally never gets sick and this virus hit him like a ton of bricks. We’ve been really strict for the last 4 months. Haven’t gone to a grocery store, haven’t gone out to dinner once, haven’t seen our friends and only allowed family at our house and we still got it. So far, Charlie, Carol and I are ok. We appreciate all the messages and prayers, please keep them coming for healing and protection for the rest of our family. 🗣Please take this virus seriously, wear a mask when in public and wash you hands frequently.

I respect Nick’s decision to sit it out. He doesn’t get paid, according to Bowman. I don’t understand the mechanics of that, but it is my understanding. And with Nick, he may not get another deal in 2021. It had to be really hard for a gamer such as Nick to come to this point. Other guys… well, I simply am not familiar with them or their situations. As for Nick, I think he’s a real stand-up guy and a guy who has appreciated the game as much as the game appreciated him. HOF’er..? No. But he never was a player that was concerned with eye grabbing stats either. He just wanted to play every day and to win. He’d take the RBI single over the jaw dropping HR. He’d willfully move the runner to 3B with a fielder’s choice grounder to 2B. And he did it all without whining or complaining about being disrespected, which he often was and is. He’s my kind of player.

A Texan, A Floridian, and a Virginian all die and go to hell. While there, they spy a red phone and ask what the phone is for. The devil tells them it is for calling back to Earth.
The Texan asks to call Dallas and talks for 5 minutes. When he is finished, the devil informs him that the cost is a million dollars, so the Texan writes him a check.
Next the Floridian calls Miami and talks for 30 minutes. When he is finished, the devil informs him that the cost is 6 million dollars, so he writes him a check.
Finally the Virginian gets his turn he calls Richmond and talks for 4 hours. When he is finished, the devil informs him that the cost is $5.00. When the Texan hears this, he goes ballistic and asks the devil why the Virginian got to call Richmond so cheaply.
The devil smiles and replies, “Since Ralph Northam took over, the state has gone to hell, so it’s a local call”.

At the risk of sounding attached and actually giving too much consideration to what might be a 2020 Braves lineup should they actually hit the field, losing Nick for the season is a bigger blow than you might think at first glance. Sure there are other OF’ers, but how many hit LH? That’d be only Ender. And with Freddie out for who knows how long, the lineup just got way unbalanced with no foreseeable answer.

    greetings all!

with all the covid cases hitting baseball it makes me wonder whether or not we will even have a 2020 baseball season.

if we even have a season, considering how many days will be lost to players on the covid list, plus additional players that are exercising their right to opt out of this season, what will it really mean if your team wins the world series? it surely won’t mean you had the best 25 man roster (i know the season starts at 30 and goes down but you know what i mean). does it mean you have the deepest system, especially in the upper minors?
does it mean you had the best 60 player pool and effectively managed your day-to-day roster better than everyone else?

don’t get me wrong. should our team win it all i will be enthralled. but it would mean a lot more to me if we were at full strength and playing opponents that are at full strength. yes, i know that injuries are a big part of the game in ANY season but this one is different. this is 101 games shorter than the norm. that gives a GM a lot more time to react to injuries and ineffective players by trade. how many trades will we see this year? in a 60 game season how far out would a team need to be to salary dump? most years it’s clear. this one, not so much.

as excited as i am for real, live baseball to resume i am just curious as to what everyone else is thinking about these points. aside from the on-field rules such as the universal DH, this season will be unlike one we’ve ever experienced, and with luck, will never experience again.

on another note, if memory serves, the last time we had a shortened season the Braves won it all!

stay safe and wash yer hands!

After many years of watching nearly every game played by the Braves since 1976, I can truthfully say this summer has been a bummer. The combination of not being able to be as physically active as I would wish plus the dearth of new movies/TV shows or any other sport has meant a lot more time reading (my eyesight won’t allow but an hour at a time) and listening (hearing going to) many books. Baseball viewing has always the perfect summertime activity for me because my AADD was always a non issue. Fall asleep for a few innings, no problem, nothing much really happened while I was dozing anyway nor did it make any real difference if I was having a conversation (mansplaining) with Ms Josie.

Even the blog has slowed to a snail’s pace and Twitter is so much politics it has become super boring. People just don’t get my sarcasm and wit. So many people so easily offended…

Therefore, I look forward to MLB’s version of the Caribbean League season this summer. 🙂

PS… So glad to see you Klubber…

i am just curious as to what everyone else is thinking about these points

I cannot see this as a legitimate season. As I’ve said before, anything less than half (81 games) is just an exhibition.

I have no problem with the universal DH. I’ve been preparing myself for its eventuality for a couple of years already.

I believe the Braves are set up fairly well under the 2020 rules. They have depth at pitcher, have built a very strong bullpen, and are well stocked in the upper minors. I do believe we need another LH bat. Nick’s opt-out seriously affects the balance of the lineup… especially with Freddie out.

I’ll be surprised if they can actually pull this off anyway. I’ll be surprised to see actual games. How many teams have already shut down their camp completely?

I realize that in this weird pseudo-season of 2020 that there is nothing typical to be compared, but I sure do like this starting 4. If we can only get Hamels back for the #5 slot at some point they will be formidable. King Felix is no longer an option as he has opted out of 2020. Kyle Wright likely now wins the #5 spot by default, but Ian Anderson will make it interesting. He’ll be in this rotation at some point.

This morning I am pondering the Braves everyday lineup. First, I have to acknowledge that we have heard virtually nothing about Freddie Freeman since it was reported he had tested positive for the ‘rona and was experiencing symptoms. Has anyone else heard if he’s improved? I’ve heard nothing. It’s now been 10 days since it was reported he was experiencing symptoms. So based on a typical timeline, he ought to be close to taking another test. (NOTE: It takes 2 negative tests to pass the league’s protocol for return from a positive.) That said, he probably will not be ready to open the season on the roster or in the lineup. So that said, we have to consider 2 lineups: without Freddie and with Freddie.

    Sans Freddie lineup:
    Ronnie Acuña, RF (R)
    Ozzie Albies, 2B (S)
    Marcell Ozuna, DH (R)
    Travis d’Arnaud, C (R)
    Yasiel Puig, LF (R)
    Austin Riley, 1B (R)
    Johan Camargo, 3B (S)
    Dansby Swanson, SS (R)
    Ender Inciarte, CF (L)

    With Freddie lineup:
    Ronnie Acuña, RF (R)
    Ozzie Albies, 2B (S)
    Freddie Freeman, 1B (L)
    Marcell Ozuna, DH (R)
    Travis d’Arnaud, C (R)
    Yasiel Puig, LF (R)
    Camargo/Riley, 3B (P)
    Dansby Swanson, SS (R)
    Ender Inciarte, CF (L)

And somewhere in there Adam Duvall may get some playing time.

Yes, it’s very RH heavy. But that looks like it has potential to be a pretty formidable lineup.

Good hitters don’t have a huge discrepancy between lefty and righty pitchers but a quality righty has an advantage over any batter. We will just have to see how it all plays out. As for Freddie, I don’t see him being 100% until late August. This Covid things is all over the place when it comes to the effect it has on people. One problem is the amount of muscle atrophy which occurs for even a short duration lay-off.

Thoppy has to be back on the phones working to find a “replacement” for Puig now. There is no contract with him, so he’s not coming even after getting well. For the record, I hope he gets well soon. And I wouldn’t mind seeing him here eventually. But I think Thoppy is going to want someone that can join the team immediately, and Puig no longer ticks that box. Getting Freddie back makes a HUGE impact on the everyday lineup… duh… but beyond that he helps balance the lineup. But there is currently no (let me clarify “no” – nada, zip, zero, zilch) LH bat on the bench, even with the expanded rosters. The closest thing we have to that is friggin’ Yonder Alonso? And he’s not even on the 40-man roster! Remember, the 2020 reboot is a sprint, not a marathon. We can’t afford to depend on Yonder Alonso to bring home the winning run in the 9th inning. Not this year.

No need to restate this. It’s fairly straightforward. My only comment is that Riley seems to have regained his stroke and that plays well for the Braves but not so well for Camargo. While he may deserve to start somewhere, the Braves really need the left side of his switch capability on the bench.

@Vox, yeah i don’t think this is really going to be considered a legit season which means whoever wins this won’t really be seen as a legit WS champion. we’ve all been watching long enough to know that just about any team can get hot over a 2 month period and do crazy, unthinkable things on the field. unless it’s the yankees or red sox there will be a huge asterisk over this season. unless of course, it’s the bravos. then clearly this will be the best team that ever pulled on sanitary socks. at least in our eyes, of course. everyone else will point to the asterisk.

glad that freddie and touki are better and back. i read where freddie was really sick at one point and sounded pretty scared about how high his fever was. makes you wonder how he bounces back from that, both physically and mentally, and what he can produce on the field. obviously his health is more important than baseball but this team really needs that solid production and leadership he offers.

on another note, i flipped on the tv today. i don’t really do that much any more. the news is all bad and depressing. i haven’t watched network programming for at least a decade. pretty much the only thing that captures my attention is cooking shows and baseball and you know that there hasn’t been a meaningful baseball game on tv since the last game of the 2019 WS. Watching the dodgers and d’backs. nobody is in the stands, well aside from the cardboard cutouts they seem to have. oddly enough they are in the section behind the plate but not in the lowest rows. those seats are tarped off. are they worried about the cardboard faces being distracting to the pitcher? is this a subtle reminder to socially distance?

anyway, watching this game tonight reminds me how important the crowd is to a tv broadcast. this game reminded me of the old laugh tracks from the 70’s sitcoms. completely forced and obviously fake. just my opinion but this is an area that really needs improvement. it’s going to be hard to keep eyes on tvs when every game feels like a Marlins home game. without ticket revenue i would guess that tv revenue will be the biggest income source this season so keeping people tuned in and turned on is paramount.

IDEA: instead of fake fan noise how about we mike up everybody in uniform? and as they speak have them highlighted on the screen? the communication on-field is an underappreciated part of the game. the way players talk to each other to tell their teammates is really fascinating. many years ago my home town minor league team had a promo called “silent night”. nobody that wasn’t playing in the game or in the dugout could make any noise. that allowed those of us in attendance to hear what was going on during the game on the field and it was a really, really cool experience. what do you think of that instead of fake noise?

Reading the story in the Athletic about Freddie Freeman’s bout with Covid he said he thought it odd that he tested negative so soon after being sick but Will Smith, who also tested positive but who was asymptomatic is still testing positive. Opinion…

Assuming Matt Adams can still hit, and he certainly represents instant offense with every AB, he could serve 2 important roles to the Braves: LH stick off the bench, and LH half of DH. I expect Marcell Ozuna to play pretty much every day for us. And he will likely play LF as described by Thoppy when he was signed… especially now that Nick Markakis is out of the equation. It was pretty much thought that Ozuna might DH most of the time with the OF being a rotation of Ronnie/Ender/Duvall/Nick. When Nicky opted out, Thoppy replaced his LH bat with the atypical Yasiel Puig. Puig would have fit in well in that role, but his COVID test scuttled that plan.

When Matt Adams was made available, it was a no-brainer for the Braves. I look now for the Braves to play the majority of their games with Ozuna/Ender/Ronnie in the OF and with Adams at DH. I think they can alter that against LH pitching by DH’ing Ozuna and playing Duvall in LF. And even at that, when Ender is struggling, or against certain tough LH’ers, Ronnie can slide to CF with Duvall in RF, while another RH bat DH’s. The fact that Camargo SH’s is huge in this scenario in that Riley can DH and Camargo can start at 3B and still bat RH.

Honestly, there are a multitude of possibilities now, all facilitated by the addition of one potentially dangerous LH bat in Matt Adams.

Welcome back, Big City. I needed something like this to reignite my passion. (Honestly, I knew my indifference wouldn’t last once real games started. Reason wins over emotion.) I may actually release my Braves caps and t-shirts from “clothes jail” now.

I can choose to let them rob my joy, or I can carry on around them. If they take it from me, then it’s because I’ve allowed myself to be bullied. So instead, I will place my focus squarely on the game and away from the extra-curricular. That won’t make it go away, but the purveyors of it still won’t affect me. In a nutshell, I choose to retain control and not cede it to those who would surely take it from me if I allow it.

I feel what CL, Chris, and Gil say…and What V said…I really don’t want politics in every fiber of, well everything. When I saw some of the SF Giants on their knees, I also saw most of the guys standing up. Even a few on one knee, with their hand over their hearts…At least they won’t have the names of “victims” on the backs of their shirts..
I don’t know…it may be the ads between innings that get me in a foul mood more than anything else, esp on esp…u.
…put on the Nats/Yanks game on in the 3rd…feels like a Spring Training game…this isn’t NASCAR. the lack of noise, only broken by…fake noise, with announcers in the studio…(why can’t they be in a booth, with masks on, or if that would sound too weird, 6 feet apart?) DULL! Meanwhile, fans on patios/roofs nearby, close together, and no mask on. the DC fascists will put an end that sort of freedom…
This may not really take, ratings wise…

now, a chance of a rain delay? yep, the DVR of Tucker will be starting soon… just doesn’t feel like real baseball, you know? Will it when the braves play?and, to beat a dead horse…plenty of really good old movies, and tv shows to watch…I am forever finding old movies I know little about, that rock! don’t feel the need to watch Netflix/HULU crap . Thoppy is a busy man…

Another lefty power bat that will strengthen the bench. Nice move by the boss. I wonder what the other details are..? Someone has been traded and a 40-man roster spot must be opened in the whole process. Maybe LHP Grant Dayton? It was speculated early that the Braves didn’t want to let the lefty walk for nothing even though he didn’t really impress in camp. He is out of options and would surely be claimed in waivers, thus he made the cut.

Waiting for details to bubble forth…

To clarify, Scott Schebler is not coming in to challenge for meaningful playing time. But in a season where roster depth will play such a significant role, adding to an area that is thinner than some others cannot be undersold.

    Soroka is legit for real.

When William Contreras came in to catch in the 8th inning, I thought he was making his ML debut. But Chip and Glav barely mentioned it, only to note the defensive changes with Ender and AJax having been PH for in the top of the inning. It made me question my first thought and then my memory as I reasoned he must have made a brief appearance last September.

Alas, yesterday was his ML debut. Chip and Glav really dropped the ball in that one. They should have made a bigger deal out of it. Even in their Atlanta studio they should have been more on top of it.

    I was and I’m not a professional.

Acuna in center and Duval in right and Riley in left for the Bravos this afternoon. Lefty must be on the mound for the Mutts.

LOL…. So, the NL East is down to a 58 game schedule. After two, all five teams have identical .500 records. That will change after today’s games but fun while it lasted.

Fried looked good yesterday didn’t he? 96 MPH fastball and two wicked curveballs and a sneaky change up. Lost a little focus in the fifth inning but recovered nicely.

Luke Jackson has become the focus of many Braves fans ire. I thought he performed well over two innings. He does give up more than his fair share of bloops and bleeders but that seems more as a results of good pitches which batters get good results on excuse me swings. I guess since Braves twitter doesn’t have Nick Markakis to blame for losses, Luke becomes a favorite whipping boy.

vintage Newcomb today. and by vintage you need to think back to when he was a starter in 17, 18 and the beginning of 19. very high pitch counts, seems like he’s trying to nibble at the plate but misses a LOT. makes me think he’s not confident in his abilities. it’s very frustrating, especially when your team gives you SEVEN runs to play with. go after the guys already. quit trying to strike them out and let your defense do their jobs!

if there is an over/under on when he gets put back in the pen i am taking the under for sure. while he only had 1 walk over 3.1 innings and gave up only the one earned run, he threw 84 pitches and 42 missed the plate! seems like the young man didn’t learn anything from his last demotion to the bullpen.

and just to show that fake news isn’t solely relegated to the news cycle i found this little nugget. bear in mind that it is from a fantasy page but i don’t care what your standard is; 82 pitches over 3.1 innings is not a solid effort, particularly for a guy that has been around for a little bit now.. https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/baseball/news/braves-sean-newcomb-solid-outing-sunday/

on a good note, the bats were HOT. three guys with three hits a piece and every starting position player had at least one. let’s hope they can keep that rolling into the next series.

I thought Chacin did a great job. Very solid and may indeed swap places with Newk.

Braves batters are pretty vicious against lower tiered pitching.

Ronald Acuna was slow out of the gate last season too. Maybe it wasn’t just hitting clean-up.

    Big MLB news this morning…

Heyman: About 40 percent of Marlins active players are now positive for COVID. Heard 11 Marlins players have now tested positive.

Rosey: Marlins’ game tonight against Orioles in Miami has been cancelled. Team still in Philadelphia.

Gelb: The Phillies are quarantining their entire visiting clubhouse staff after exposure to the Marlins this weekend. Some were tested yesterday and waiting for results. Yankees brought their own clubhouse staff to Philly last night.

Rosey again: Tonight’s Yankees-Phillies game is cancelled.

    And closer to home…

McAlpin: Certainly very concerning with the Marlins having played a pair of exhibitions in Atlanta Tues and Wed. And of course the Braves being without both starting catchers to open the season, though both Flowers and d’Arnaud have tested negative so far.

How much longer will this “season” progress before the whole thing is postponed and eventually cancelled?

Watching Folty pitch last night was painful, I kept waiting for him to unleash one of his 97mph fastballs along with the Rays batters but it never came. Just as soon as they figured out he could not throw his slider for strikes and could not throw over 90mph he was done. It was party time in the Rays dugout. First thing that came to mind, Julio Teheran…

Lots of fastball pitchers have taught themselves how to move the ball around after they have lost velocity but not when they still believe they are throwing 96mph. Maybe he truly believes he is not hurt, perhaps there is no pain associated with his throwing, at lest not to him, lots of pain in Braves Nation watching him flail around on the mound for the Braves however.

I said Chacin looked stout in relief of Newk the other night, I guess the Braves high command agreed.

So good luck Folty, we hardly knew you. Someone will give you a shot. That is until they won’t.

Could the Braves be in the market for a starting pitcher now? Folty was so bad he lost his job. Newk was not great, but at least he worked out of his jams. Of course, he worked himself into those jams every inning he was out there… which was only a little over 3 because he had blown his pitch count up to 82 pitches. I think he’ll be on a very short leash in his next outing, with a permanent return to the bullpen a distinct possibility if he has a repeat performance.

Chad Sobotka was added to the active roster to help bolster the already tired bullpen heavily taxed by back to back starting stinkers. But come Saturday the Braves are going to have to find a starter somewhere. Is this an opportunity for a youngster?

Bryce Wilson? He hasn’t really been able to pitch consistently in numerous opportunities. Good fastball, not good secondary offerings. I still think he’d be a great asset as a short inning late reliever, but what do I know?

Ian Anderson? Not on the 40-man roster. Of course, that doesn’t mean a roster move can’t be made. It’s just not as convenient as some other options. Like…

Patrick Weigel? Probably not going to give you more than 4 innings being less than 2 years away from TJ surgery. He’s certainly a candidate to come up and be an “opener” of sorts, though.

Big Tucker Davidson? Now we’re talking. He’s a big lefty with a big time arm. But he can also be a little wild. And he’s certainly an unproven commodity. Can you afford to roll the dice at this level in a short season? High risk/high reward kind of move. But I personally wouldn’t mind it.

Of course the current roster has Touki and Chacin already on board. But neither of them are ramped up for too many innings, so your looking at a piggyback situation that will impact the bullpen.

My guess is that the powers that be will go with the committee approach (Chacin/Tomlin/Touki) in the short term, but will eventually give a start to one or both of Davidson and Anderson.

And don’t count out Thoppy rustling up a pitcher from the outside. Never ever put anything past that guy.

Was that Jesse Biddle? That guy was an enigma. He could look unhittable in one outing and then couldn’t get a little leaguer out in the next. I do remember him after his last appearance in Atlanta telling the press he had no idea what was wrong but that nothing was working for him. At least he told the truth. Passan: Washington Nationals players voted against going to Miami to this weekend following the Marlins’ COVID-19 outbreak, sources confirm to ESPN. At the same time, what is the likelihood that Washington, D.C., will want a Marlins team with such a severe outbreak coming to the capital? As we’ve seen, new positive tests have come in almost daily, and the incubation period means non-positives still can be carrying the virus.

Kyle Wright toes the rubber tonight for the Bravos in his first start of 2020 and beginning of what many speculate will be his regular residence as a member of the rotation. There is already intrigue from that standpoint and from the point of view that we simply want to see how much he has progressed.

    But now…

How much more important is Wright’s start now? Does the past 2 stinky starts from his teammates put any more pressure on the 24-year-old? This fan thinks this start is massively important. Wright has to begin building his ML resume now, and has to show his manager that he can be counted on. Otherwise, upper management may begin considering how to fix a sudden unexpected dearth of pitching.

According to Bowman, Wright lost the “feel” for his fastball in the 3rd inning because he could not lick his fingers – a new COVID mandate. He was quick to say that Kyle didn’t offer that as an excuse and took full responsibility for the outing, emphasizing that he has to get better before his next start. He only answered a question asking what happened with that reason.

But what about that? If a pitcher cannot get the same grip on a ball that he’s grown accustomed to since Pony League, how tough must that be to adjust? How many pitchers are facing the same obstacle? And to take this one step further, could this grip issue cause an alteration in delivery for someone and lead to possible injury? We all know these pitchers’ arms are like a fine tuned Italian automobile engine. One part gets loose and the whole thing flies apart.

Damp cloth yes. As was apparently stated in the post-game interview (which I admittedly did not see or hear), a damp cloth is not the same as saliva. And having in the past – albeit way in the past – also used saliva to improve grip on a baseball, football, basketball, etc, I can concur that saliva is different. Water can be slippery.

Regardless, as Gil alluded, isn’t it ironic that a team that went through a rebuild emphasizing starting pitching is suddenly scrambling for starting pitching?

This fan wants to see Tucker Davidson. Even Patrick Weigel. I understand that Touki is in line to assume Folty’s starting spot, but has he earned it? He didn’t fare much better when relieving the beleaguered former Bravo. Touki is really just another in the general group of young pitchers that has displayed “good stuff” but not-so-good control.

The behind the scenes mumbling suggests that Davidson could get his shot after an inter-squad outing or two at Gwinnett where his control can be assessed by some trusted eyes. No reason to bring him up to supplant guys already here if he isn’t going to do any better. Ian Anderson falls in that same camp but to a lesser degree. There are still some lingering memories of his less-than-successful stint at AAA at the end of 2019 causing the suits to think he needs one more real AAA season to complete his development. Remember, he’s only 22 and barely that, having just hit that mark in May. He’s talented, but still raw. I think we’ll see Weigel on the reliever train that will shuffle in fresh arms periodically.

And don’t forget Will Smith will join the bullpen after a few good side bullpen sessions. He’s been cleared medically and just needs to ramp up his arm.

It’ll be good to see Soroka tonight and Max tomorrow and at least feel a small sense of confidence in a starter.

Yes, as CL is showing above, Nick is coming back. He petitioned the Commissioner’s office for an exemption and was granted it. Obviously he’ll have to work into game shape, but I honestly don’t expect that to take long for Nick. He’ll probably get plenty of live AB’s in game sim games in Gwinnett to make it happen. I’d look for Scott Schebler’s stay in Atlanta to be a short one.

Random observations on a Thursday morning…

William Contreras showed that he is a bona fide catching prospect and can hang in The Show. But Travis d’Arnaud is a high $ FA for a reason. I’m glad he’s back in the saddle. Contreras will be back. Tyler Flowers is a short timer.

When Dansby Swanson is healthy, he’s All-Star caliber. Let’s pray he can stay healthy for an entire season, even if it’s a severely truncated one.

Austin Riley is more than just a loud bat.

You can’t keep a good Freddie down.

Mike Soroka is an ace. And I don’t use that term loosely.

I commented on Twatter this AM that I can remember the ESP-U pundits poo-poo the idea that Riley would ever play the field well enough to be a major league third baseman. Making some really smooth plays in the field. The final play of the game was web gem worthy methinks…

Soroka is a stud and there are a bevy of good young arms in the league this year, he more than holds his own especially when you consider he always draws the opposing team’s best ace.

Freddie was on fire last night, anyone else think he was out to prove something after having a Golden Sombrero hung on him Tuesday night?

Has Dansby emerged to be the one-one he was envisioned to be? Looks like the kid who was lighting it up at the beginning of last season. Playing hurt/injured is a drag on anybody’s stats.

Folty has cleared waivers and been outrighted to the player pool camp in Gwinnett. This is excellent news for the Braves and probably for Folty as well. Some may believe he’s a “change of scenery” guy that could benefit from a new environment and some new voices. And maybe that is true. But I personally believe he needed something like this – a reality check – to wake up something inside him and push him to become the pitcher we have all seen flashes of. Whether his problem is physical or mental, maybe he can now admit to himself that something is not right and get on the road to fixing it. I’d like to see him make it back and be the big hard throwing righty that we’ve all been waiting for.

Yep, maybe he is experimenting with the 80% mode of pitching. That just is not going to get him to where he needs to be, Maybe it’s his legs, maybe it’s his are/shoulder or yes, even his head. No matter, he was not fooling anyone except maybe himself. I hope he takes it to heart that he is not irreplaceable, maybe he can ask Jeff Francouer how that kind of attitude can work out for you.

One might think it is a huge wake-up call to discover not one other major league team was willing to take a chance on you. I know my ego would be hurt big time. Sort of puts it in prospective for you.

And then there’s this part of the equation as stated by Braves beat writer Gabe Burns, which I think seems logical to be directly related:

While at the alternate site, expect Foltynewicz to emphasize gaining weight again. He already had mentioned to Snitker that he wanted to add another 15 pounds before the designation. Foltynewicz has appeared much slimmer, which likely affected his velocity.

The 28-year-old has exhibited strikingly low velocity since camp reopened earlier this month. The decline was evident in his intrasquad start, his exhibition outing against the Marlins and his most recent appearance versus the Rays.

After averaging around a 95-mph fastball last season, Foltynewicz’s velocity hovered at 89 on Monday. He peaked at 92 mph. The Braves, referencing an increased urgency during a trimmed season, saw enough to pull the plug.

“He mentioned he was already working to get weight back,” Snitker said. “I think that’s something, too, you have to go about it the right way, in how you train and eat, your diet, the whole thing.

Folty has an ample frame, but he does look gaunt. He certainly needs to fill out to not only regain strength but also stamina. His body is the tool of his trade. It’s actually quite irresponsible for him to neglect it.

    Now… good Braves stuff.

Max Fried = dominant. Man he looks good. I also like to watch his face between pitches. While Soroka consistently keeps the patented stoic Glavine expression, Fried looks like a bulldog. Intense, but hyper-focused.

    Dansby = en fuego.

Pittsburgh Melancon = good Melancon. San Fran Melancon = bad Melancon. Atlanta Melancon = good Melancon… thankfully. Tough, tough slider that he can draw back to the inside corner on righties and that he can dip outside on lefties.

Tampa Rays = good team. I’m thankful to split 2-2 with them this week.

Yes, Max looked magnifico last night. I didn’t really expect a no-no because he would not have been allowed to finish the game but he was what Kyle Wright should aspire to be. Efficient, mixing his pitches, garnering enough strike-outs to keep hitters off balance.

I get the impression that Dansby is on a mission this season.

Hi, guys. Thanks for your prayers. I think Kelly may sleep in the hall tonight! lol Unfortunately our property is heavily wooded, so…. But those trees have stood there for 100 years or more. Prayer is powerful. All is battened down. I think (whatitsname is) will move juuust west of us, however, that puts us in the eastern/northeastern side of the storm which is always worse that the other side. You always want a storm of whatever size to pass you to the east.
Anyhow, we’ll probably lose power for a while, branches and litter will have to be cleaned up afterward (likely the hardest part since I’m limited to a walker for now – hard to handle a walker AND a rake at the same time!) but other than that I don’t really expect anything more. Winds will be in the 70+mph range and lots of rain, that we can handle.
I’ll be in touch! Have fun.

    Steve Hummer, ajc.com:

As manager, it is Brian Snitker’s job to manage distress, too.

“Somebody else is going to get an opportunity. Things like that happen,” [Snitker] said. “These guys will regroup here. And somebody’s going to get an opportunity to do something really good. We’ve got some young guys who are going to continue to get better and we’ll be fine.”

Immediate candidates to “get an opportunity” that come to mind are old dog Josh Tomlin, perpetual hopeful Bryce Wilson, up-and-comer rocket-armed Tucker Davidson, and a very young Ian Anderson. You cannot completely dismiss the return of either Mike Foltynewicz or Jhoulys Chacin, but neither are at the top of the list and should only return if the season slips away in the hands of the ones that precede.

And don’t forget, Touki Toussaint has already been pressed into starting duty following the sharp decline in Folty. Speaking for myself, I was hoping that was just a temporary Band-aid. Now it looks like the Band-aid is stuck.

I would imagine as soon as Mike Soroka is placed on the 45-day IL, Anderson will be added to the 40-man roster, making his candidacy more possible. But his inexperience will be an impediment. As dominant as he has been across the lower levels of the minors, he strugled a bit in his half season at AAA. That’s not a bad thing necessarily, just a sign that he’s not yet ready to face ML quality batters up and down a lineup. He just needs more development.

Of course, you cannot ignore the possibility that Thoppy will use that open roster spot to bring in a veteran starter from elsewhere. But at this point, what can you get that has more promise than what you already have? And at what price? I’m sure that he was already on the phone after receiving the diagnosis from team docs, but I also imagine the initial asking price from other GM’s is high. They smell chum in the water and sense opportunity to plunder the team’s highly rated minor league crop.

There’s no easy call here. If I get an opportunity today, I’ll try to do a fairly decent breakdown of the in-house candidates for a new lead.

For the record, this amateur GM would give Tucker Davidson a start or 2 and see how that goes. He’s more physically ready than Ian Anderson, has a better arsenal than Bryce Wilson, and has more future promise than Josh Tomlin. Plus, I want Tomlin in my pen to be able to backup my youngster laden rotation.

Hi, guys! Kelly & I are good, only minor damage to the house, and the tops of 2 century-old pine trees are down in the backyard – along with a few tons of other debris. And the weather bureau at the airport reports that our highest consistent winds were 46 with a few higher gusts. Right! We’re located east of the airport and I can guarantee winds were much above that, as can others living in this area. The damage level proves it. Also the east side of a storm is where the worst weather is, even they know that. They should have clarified their report by saying “winds recorded at the airport…”
We’ve just in the last hour gotten power and internet back. Makes us feel as if we’ve returned somewhat to normal!
Kelly had quite a bad flashback when those tree tops crashed to the ground, but she’s doing much better now, thank goodness.
Both kitties are still very skittish, looking at me like “WHAT did you DO, hooman?”
Anyhow, I’ll hire somebody to clean up all the mess in the yard since I’m no longer able to do it, and life will go one.
Thank you SO much for caring. The great majority of people have already forgotten the storm and they never think of inquiring about someone’s welfare. Such is our society, unfortunately. If it doesn’t affect them directly, it doesn’t matter or exist. I so thankful for friends like you! Chris and Gil, I’ve read that you both have come through well, and I’m thankful!

Rusin didn’t pitch that badly last night, but he did go 30+ on pitches, essentially rendering him unusable for a couple of days. The Braves need all arms on deck with the sudden loss of Soroka, one of only 2 starters to go more than 4 innings deep this year. They’ll make additional moves this week as they move toward Soroka’s next turn on Friday. And we may not know that night’s starter until that afternoon.

Someone posted a comment that Furgerson Jenkins had the same type of injury in September and recovered to pitch 190 innings the following season. That was like 30 years ago so I suspect the surgery in not nearly as invasive now as it was then. At least it is not Tommy John. He won’t be a speedster on the bases but I don’t think that will be a problem any longer.

Bryce Wilson has to develop more than 2 pitches (and only one that he can control) before he’ll be an effective starter. Now late inning reliever? That’s where I’d place him if I were in charge. Of course, given the current need at starter, hard to not keep him stretched out in Gwinnett just in case.

I suppose that could be to allow the non-starter in the d’ArFlow tandem to be used as a PH off the bench and still have a C in reserve in case of “the I word”. That actually makes a little sense.

If I’m Snit, I make Marcell Ozuna my DH and platoon Nick and Adam Duvall in LF. Seems a pretty easy call to me.

Here’s why Ian Anderson can still use a little more time in the oven so that he doesn’t come out raw…

    Rookie (10 starts, 39.2 IP): 2.04 ERA, K/9: 8.2, BB/9: 2.7, K/BB ratio: 3.00
    low-A (20 starts, 83.0 IP): 3.14 ERA, K/9: 11.0, BB/9: 4.7, K/BB ratio: 2.35
    high-A (20 starts, 100.0 IP): 2.52 ERA, K/9: 10.6, BB/9: 3.6, K/BB ratio: 2.95
    AA (25 starts, 130.1 IP): 2.62 ERA, K/9: 11.8, BB/9: 3.9, K/BB ratio: 3.05
    AAA (5 starts, 24.2 IP): 6.57 ERA, K/9: 9.1, BB/9: 6.6, K/BB ratio: 1.39

Batters in AAA are a little more choosy as to which pitches they swing at. And that will be magnified threefold in The Show. Why should he not be rushed forward? Exhibit A – Bryce Wilson; Exhibit B – Kolby Allard; Eshibit C – Sean Newcomb. If you can’t locate the fastball and keep it off the heart of the plate in AAA, you’ll get scalded in the bigs. And said scalding can be a real setback for some pitchers. Maybe not all, and maybe not Ian Anderson. And he could prove me completely wrong. But in the shortened season when anything can happen, why risk the long term effects on you top prized prospect?

Listening to the Mets broadcasters the other night (sometimes I need a break from Chip and Frenchy) they were opining that in the bad old/good old days, it was preferred that a kid have 1000 innings under their belt before promoting them to the majors. Pretty d\sure that was pre steroid and HGH infusion and since MLB has cracked down on their use, it would be logical to try and revert to that norm. I think calling these kids up prematurely is why we see their numbers be all over the place. It is a rare pitcher who can jump the gun on that and stay healthy. Shucks, it is a rare pitcher who can stay healthy period…

Well folks, seldom is a loss associated with good news but there is that, Newk pitched much better last night, yes, he gave up two runs but one should have not counted but for some bad luck with a ball coming out after a catch. Still, only two runs should not have been an un-surmountable barrier. Ryu has been a bit of Braves Kyptonite and held the good guys to one hit in his stint.

Okay, it’s Tookie’s turn in the barrel tonight.

Newk pitched much better last night

Indeed he did. He located his 4-seamer so much better and mixed in his secondary pitches when he needed to. By his own words, this is just his 3rd start in over a year and he’s still adjusting to the role. I don’t think he’s making excuses; I think it’s a very valid point. As a starter, you have to vary your repertoire to stretch out deeper into games. As a reliever, you simply go out there and let it all hang out. Last night’s showing was a very good sign and an indication that he can make the transition with a few more turns in the rotation.

But with Newk, the key is always fastball location. Period. It’s been his bugaboo throughout his professional career.

Remember way back when we were speculating the Braves would employ a 6-man rotation of Mike Soroka, Max Fried, Folty, Cole Hamels and King Felix with Newk and Kyle Wright battling for the 6th spot?

    Ah… good times…

And from young to old… how about old man Nicky? Walk-off yicketty baby. And not a cheapie either. That ball was mashed.

Chris, we’re ok from the storm. Minor damage but the yard is one royal meess! Will have to hire somebody to clean it up. Tops of 2 125′ pines are down. There were so many tornadoes, I wonder if one passed over us. Hope all of your clan is ok down there. Did it come ashore or skirt the coast. Where I’m located, we got that dratted eastern side. It was badly underestimated just judging by all the damage it did. Thank goodness, it was a fastmover! Thanks for asking, Chris!

anyways, off the soapbox, hope this is a sign of better things to come from Touki!

I believe this could be true. He was asked in the post-game interview when he first picked up a bat after initially opting out of 2020. He said, “Last week at Gwinnett.”

The guy just knows how to hit. He gets dogged by the younger stat-gazing pseudo-fans who don’t know anything about baseball beyond the spreadsheet. But you have to have guys like Nick on your team because he’s a ballplayer. Simply stated, he’s a ballplayer. Guys like Nick make guys like Ronald better. Period. And if guys like Ronald can learn from guys like guys like Nick, guys like Ronald become HOF’ers.

CL, sorry about the mess in your yard but glad it wasn’t any worse than that. Down here we had a good bit of much-needed rain and a little wind. Really nothing more than a good storm. Of course, Ee-Say-Ee-us (who picked that name anyway) was offshore so we only saw the weak side of it. Up in the Grand Strand area it was a lot worse but that’s pretty close to you.

I know that tropical weather is something that you have to live with when you live here but I’m really hoping that Mother Nature will cut us a little slack this year!

    couple of nice wins today!

this has been a strange year. and in this strange year i just noticed something very strange. just checked the NL standings. the Marlins are 7-3 (.700 winning percentage). that is strange enough of course but here’s where it gets weird. the Braves are 11-6 (.647 winning percentage. so that means the Marlins are in first place in the NL East. Right? Right. funny thing is, they are one half game back of the Braves. how’s that work?

the Marlins, Cards, and Phillies (maybe others) have missed some games which has lead to this anomaly. does anyone know what the plan is? will those games be made up later? if the games aren’t made up and we end the regular season like this (not likely i know) who wins the division? is it the team with the best winning percentage? that is what it looks like to me.

The current “plan” is to have these teams somehow complete their 60 game schedule over the remaining days on the calendar. It doesn’t seem feasible, but then again the whole season hasn’t seemed feasible. If I had to guess, the league will continue to try to get these games made up with 7 inning double-headers (much like the Braves made up their rainout) until the numbers no longer work. Then they’ll change the rules again like they seem to do day-to-day anyway.

From a purely logical standpoint, should it come down to an unequal amount of games played, the league should go to the Win column first before winning percentage. But again… the rules change day-to-day, so we really might as well not speculate on anything until the regular “season” actually ends. Who knows? There may only be 8 teams still playing games by that time anyway. 😆

Good morning Stuffville, an entertaining day of Braves baseball Sunday. Nice to have RAJ break out of his slump. Freddie was a beast and Duvall was clutch. Ynoa was stout and the Braves pen in general was great.

I have noticed a disturbance in the Force however. The Braves have lost each first game in a series at visiting parks. I am curious to see if that trend continues in New York tomorrow night. Still need to get by a tough customer in Nola tonight. Note to team: Get into the Philly pen early…

I am still in rotten baseball watching shape…I catch games in the middle (caught one last week I think in the 2nd) and just forgot that of course a Sunday start, esp. with a Double header, would start early. Really wanted to see the very brief Ynoa start, but thought, oh, I’ll catch highlights…ha! Stupid ESPN(oxymoron?) barely showed highlights of the 1st game, didn’t even mention him. And I could have missed it, but after game 2, all I saw were game 2 highlights, which I guess is to be expected.
oh well, it was very nice to see them beat up the Phils like that.
Chris, good point! I mean, there is going to be all sorts of wackiness , the cards may end up losing 15 games this year!

    Good morning, Stuffians.

Anecdote: This morning I was crunched for time as I got a later than normal start on my typical morning routine activities. And even though said activities got off to a late start, I had the same deadline to get them completed. Part of that was to walk my dog, who just didn’t seem to want to do what I needed him to do at all. He appeared to want to wander off our prescribed course. Normally I wouldn’t mind too much but this morning my time was tight. I had to shorten his leash to try to get him to do what I needed him to do. He still wouldn’t cooperate, so I had to take him back home before he could accomplish what he needed to do (and what I wanted him to do) so that I could move on forward trying to achieve the goal I set out to reach.

Moral of the story: When the time slot is compressed and every minute (or game) is magnified, there is no time to wander off course looking for the right direction. While 4 games would normally be considered a small sample size, in a 60 game season it’s huge. There is nothing normal about MLB 2020. Every game has playoff ramifications. There is no luxury of time to allow Newk a chance to find his way. And so now the Braves have to move on forward without him if they want to achieve the goal they set out to reach.

It’s time for the next man up. And the next man will either get the job done or he won’t. And the line will continue. The eligible player pool is 60 men deep for a reason, and that depth will likely be the key to this season’s level of success.

Don’t forget, the 2020 trade deadline is now just 20 days away. With the expanded playoffs, there won’t be many teams looking to drop impact players, and those that do will want a healthy return. It’s simple supply and demand. I believe that Thoppy will be trying to acquire at least 1 more starter, but at what cost? And who? Texas is a team currently in the middle of the pack, and would sneak into the playoffs as one of the last teams if the season ended today, but they don’t really look like a team that could compete. So what they do over the next week or 2 will determine whether they will look to cash in some assets for prospects before Aug. 31. And they have a couple of guys that are interesting. The named being bandied about for alot of teams is Lance Lynn, who is having another solid season and would be a nice veteran addition. He’ll also carry a pretty hefty price tag. He’s relatively young at 34 and unlike the other candidates I’m about to note, he is under contract through 2021. The other Ranger I wouldn’t mind picking up is old friend Mike Minor. His price tag would be considerably lower, and while he won’t make anyone forget about losing Mike Soroka, he will give you a solid back-end-of-the-rotation veteran that can chew up a few innings before his deal expires at the end of the season. Staying out west, the D’backs are also having a miserable season, and just put disappointing FA pickup Madison Bumgarner on the IL. Perpetual rumor magnet Robbie Ray is very likely to be moved. And as a guy that is only gonna give you about 6 starts before becoming a FA his price tag can’t be too high, can it?. Then again, it is 2020. Anything is possible. Would it be crazy to think that Thoppy would look to add a 3B upgrade? Neither Johan Camargo nor Austin Riley are hitting their weight. If it were me, I’d stop shuffling the 2 and let the long term hopeful Riley try to find a groove before pulling the plug. But I digress. I think it’s unlikely that the Braves would spend their trade capital on a position player, but this season is proving to be one of little patience, so everything is on the table.

Guys that could be used as trade capital from Atlanta? Well, there are a plethora of pitching prospects not named Tucker Davidson or Ian Anderson. And I think that William Contreras immeasurably elevated his stock in his brief time in The Show, making it at least thinkable that Shea Langeliers could be moved for the right return.

V, I just don’t know….as you saw in the link above, revenue was WAY down, at unheard of levels, at least through June. Now, TV revenue has returned, but how are the ratings? I heard Rush talk about the debuts of the NBA and baseball. NBA’s first few games had something like 1.3, 1.4 Mil, and he said that’s really pretty bad, esp. for a debut. And baseball, Mets-Braves game, 922K on espn!!! Have no idea what Sports South ratings normally are, but has anyone heard this year?

so, teams that are in it to some extent, with NO fans in the seats, are they going to trade away players, and cut down on their tv ratings, their only source of income right now? I just don’t see trades being made, for the most part…could be wrong, I am often….

Ber, I think the fact that 16 teams out of 30 teams (more than 50%) will make the playoffs will temper trade action more than anything. There will be alot of teams within striking distance of the defacto tournament, and as we’ve all see any team can get hot at the right moment and streak through to the World Series, right Marlins? Twice? But there will be some deals done. I’ll be shocked if the Snakes hold onto Robbie Ray.

Good morning folks, well, another stinker for sure… Remember the old adage, your ace is expected to give you a great start every time out, your # 2 & 3 guys, a good start every 2 out of 3 starts, # 4 50-50, # 5, a good start once out of every 3. Right now the Braves are going too battle with a number 2 and 4 fives… When Soroka went down, I fear the Braves chance sank too, even in a play-off, what would be their chances?

I am so reminded of the year the Braves lost Beachy and Medlin in spring training and then Hudson got hurt, there are just not enough horses left in the stable to pull the wagon.

Now, as for some surprising teams like the Marlins and Orioles. It is not that unusual for a young team to get hot early. Remember Pittsburg a few seasons ago? Then the second half started and all the young guys faded fast. So, there is no second half this year… It is a sprint this season, no marathon…

As for TV viewership being down.. BLM happened….

It’s pretty tough to win when you have such a huge hole in your roster. In a normal season, a good team would have time to overcome any short term maladies but last night marked the 1/3 point of the season.

The Braves had their chances last night but between the at’em balls and fielding snafus, they again fell short. Of course the Braves aren’t the only team falling short. The Nats and the Phils are in the same boat.

I believe the players are still playing the game they love to the best of their ability. I believe the teams are still trying to win each game with the same fervor they always have. I’ve seen some amazing plays in the field and some mighty offensive displays. I’ve also seen some impressive pitching here and there. Sadly I’ve also witnessed a plethora of injuries due to, in my opinion, a lack of proper physical preparation prior to the regular season commencing. We can argue all day long the “legitimacy” of the season, but the game is the same. There is nothing in this society currently that is “normal”, and baseball is no different. I for one an thankful for something that comes close to what I’m accustomed to. I’m still sitting on the edge of my seat when the batter works the count to 3-2 with the tying run in scoring position. And I still jump up from my chair when the outfielder leaps to the top of the wall to bring back what would have been a 3-run homer. I’m still escaping temporarily, even if only for a few innings at a time.

Everyday life these days is chocked full of stress from every angle whether it’s the current political climate, racial strife, educational challenges, job challenges, or just simply trying to get food on the table each evening. I am grateful for anything that gives me even temporary relief from the strife and disorder that has taken up residence in the daily endeavor.

For what it’s worth, Kyle Muller is not currently on the team’s 40-man roster… much the same as Ian Anderson. Either could possibly contribute this season, but neither is really quite ready for The Show. I know it’s not a popular sentiment, but I believe each of these top prospects needs more minor league (or whatever this season’s equivalent is) innings. But it won’t be long.

Quiz me on Tucker Davidson. That’s a guy that I think might be closer to ready as far as seasoning is concerned.

Good afternoon Stuffians, surprising game yesterday. Braves pull off a 4-0 shutout with a guy jettisoned by the Pirates hurling 4 strong innings and a stout performance again put in by the bullpen and Braves Twitter’s favorite whipping boy producing two clutch hits driving in 3 of the 4 runs put up by the good guys.

The Nats pitched evil eye Scherzer yesterday so the pitching match ups should be fairly even for the upcoming series this week in Atlanta. Kyle Wright continues his education tonight against Anibal Sanchez who has been getting shelled of late. If the Braves can just get Kyle to just pitch and not overthink things, maybe he can get thru 5 innings tonight.

Look for a lot of runs to be put up tonight by both sides. Scores more resembling a softball beer league than a MLB game. Of course, that analogy may no long hold true with all the big numbers being put up.

He has long been touted as the best defender in the organization, varsity included. Does Pache push Ender to RF? I think he should, but I don’t set the lineup. Ozuna has to go back to DH. His defense is passable in LF, but is a liability in RF. I still can’t figure out how a guy that was a Gold Glove outfielder in 2017 can look so mediocre in 2020…

And don’t forget that the trade deadline is looming just 11 days from now. With over half the teams making the weirdo 2020 playoff tournament, and many teams at least within striking distance of the last playoff spots, there won’t be alot of wholesale dumping of big names. But there could be some targeted moves. Teams like the Giants, Red Sox, Royals, Pirates and Mariners might be looking a bit toward the future. Johnny Cueto is rumored to be available out in San Fran, but he’s got a fair bit of $$ left on his deal. Old friend Kevin Gausman is having a fairly decent season for the last place Giants and is on a more team-friendly 1-year deal. He could help the Braves out alot just by eating some innings. The same could be said for the BoSox’ Martin Perez. The Royals have a trio of starters they could look to cash in. The Pirates ought to explore trading somebody of value, but they won’t. They’ll hang onto all their good assets and stay bad. On the other hand, he Mariners could trade anybody. Their GM Jerry Dipoto loves a deal more than any GM in baseball. Taijuan Walker maybe? The team I’d like to see hook up with the Braves is Texas. They have a pair of interesting pitchers in Lance Lynn and Mike Minor. They also have venerable old Todd Frazier at 3B tearing the cover off of baseballs. The Braves could use all of the above from them, but any one or two would be extremely helpful. Sadly the Rangers are still In contention at 10-13 and 9th in the AL overall. Should they reel off a losing streak before the end of August, maybe they’d look more toward 2021 and beyond? One can hope…

A rule many on Twitter many forget, to get something you have to give up something. For the Braves it will be the proverbial “arm” & “leg”… A young starter and a speedy outfielder for a rental to take them into September which is almost upon us.

    Is Cole Hamels well yet?

Mets exposed to possible? In Miami? I wonder if they went to the strip club recommended by the Marlins’ players? And wither Nick Markakis? All the fear of joining the team and covid and he gets exposed while away from the team… go figure…

I know not what course others may take but give me HQCL and zinc and i’ll take my chances… (With apologies to Patrick Henry)

to get something you have to give up something

The Braves have to acquire a starter to help out the current rotation. Reality: The Braves have only 1 real starter remaining in Max Fried. And I’m personally not counting on seeing Cole Hamels at all. Even if the Braves can’t come away with a hot name starter, they must bring someone in who can “eat innings”, a cliche that is getting very old but yet still sums up the Braves biggest need. Otherwise the bullpen will be worn down before they get to the playoffs. And I’m sure Max Fried would like a little bit of pressure taken off his mighty shoulder. Kevin Gausman would fit that bill and not carry a huge cost. You could package a decent but not elite pitching prospect like Freddy Tarnok or Victor Vodnik with a unused starter like Jhoulys Chacin and probably fetch him. Or dare I suggest that unused starter be Folty? He has -0- trade value as far as measurables are concerned and is a FA at season’s end. Perhaps the Giants might hope they can extract something from the former All-Star? I think his days in Atlanta are over. Might as well try to get something of value for him even if it’s just for a month.

By itself, this move makes little sense. But the Braves actually assigned Bryce Wilson to the alternate site after their last game on Wednesday, so there was an active roster spot open. Why AJax? I can only speculate that it gives Snit the flexibility to use Flow or d’Arnaud off the bench and still have AJax as an emergency defensive replacement at C. Otherwise it doesn’t appear to make sense. That said, these guys aren’t just throwing darts at a chart and hoping the move works. They get paid alot of $$ to know what they’re doing. There is always a reason even if it’s not a very good one.

Here’s another name to chew on. Here is an excerpt from a piece published yesterday by Fred Owens over at Tomahawk Take:

In his early segment on MLB Central, [JP] Morosi said that the Braves seemed a nice match for Seattle’s Taijuan Walker. In his five starts so far, he’s thrown 27 innings, striking out 25 and walking eight. Walker’s been better than those numbers indicate. Like many, he had a rough start after summer camp, but he’s been improving as he added innings.

Walker’s first start lasted only 3-1/3 innings as he gave up five runs to Houston. Next time out, he went seven, one-hit, shutout innings against AL West-leading Oakland, striking out eight and walking two while throwing 94 pitches.

Walker isn’t a number one starter, but that’s not what the Braves need. The Braves need pitchers who throw strikes and don’t give up free passes. Walker averages over five innings a start, and walked just eight in 27 innings; three of those came in one game.

He’s on an inexpensive one-year deal – $740K in adjusted payroll- with about $320K remaining. It’s hard to see the Mariners demanding a lot for him, particularly if – as I’ve mentioned before – we take Kyle Seager and his contract as well (which solves another issue for Atlanta).

Ah… the added element of Kyle Seager. There is the offense at 3B the Braves are missing this season. Why would the M’s move a productive power hitting 3B, especially when he’s slashing .301/.391/.548 with 5 HR’s and 22 RBI? Well, because at age 32 he’s owed the prorated portion of $19.5M for this season and $18.5M for next, with a team option for 2022. The M’s are done for this season and don’t have alot of hope for improvement in 2021 either.

If you attach his money to Walker, you can get the pair for a veritable pittance compared to the productivity each could bring to the Braves.

Why would the Braves take on that much money for a 32 year old 3B when they have Austin Riley? Because Riley can’t break the Mendoza line and the Braves should be trying to win now. Period. And if Seager finishes this season they way he has started it, you have the option in the offseason to hitch your wagon to him for another year or trade his short term commitment to another team with a hole to fill. You’ll still net more for him than from Folty, who won’t even earn you a draft pick in FA compensation now.

Place Seager’s LH power numbers behind Freddie and Marcell, add Walker’s innings to the rotation, and you’ve addressed 2 major weaknesses on the team while giving yourself a much better chance to win in October.

I just don’t think 27 games show the real Klye Seager. 2017? .249 BA 2018? .221. 2019? 239. wee…..and I’m sorry, but soaking up 18 mil contracts, even for a year, are probably over, at least for 2021. Perhaps Seattle makes an offer to eat half of next years contract, then they will want a better return of course. Unless Liberty can do some sort of a write off that makes sense. I mean, did you hear about them selling off part of the battery? I never heard exactly how much, guessing not a huge amount, but still….
I think Austin could match 22 HRs 78 RBIs, and .239 Seagers numbers in his last full season, 2018.
Walker does sound like a good match, have to admit.

Riley might, key word is might, turn into something special. He might also turn into Andy Marte. Seager was an All-Star in 2014, finished in the MVP voting on both 2014 and 2016 while playing on bad teams, and has averaged 26 HR and 82 RBI for his career. He was hurt for a portion of 2019 limiting him to only 106 games after going to the post at least 155 games for the rest of the years. If a low batting average is the standard by which we are going to judge our power hitters, then we need to dump half the league. I think Seattle could eat a portion of the money amount to get relief from the whole, but when you compare his deal to some other power hitting 3B across the league, Seager’s is not that unreasonable. Remember when we were all clamoring for Thoppy to back the Brinks truck up to Donaldson’s front door? How has that worked out for Minnie?

Always playing it safe gets you only to the door. You have to take some chances if you are going to go through.

I am focused on 2020. The Braves are still leading the division, but its not a good division. We don’t have the pitching to shut teams down and we don’t have enough bats to slug it out with the best ones. If the Braves want to go far in this year’s playoffs, they have to get more offense from 3B. Riley and Camargo aren’t doing it. And neither has shown me anything thus far to think they might change anytime soon.

If anyone is watching the Fox broadcast of this game, you may have heard Chip with a couple of very interesting reports. First, Cole Hamels is scheduled to throw a bullpen off a mound next week. That’s a big development. The second one is even more intriguing. Since being DFA’d and passed over in waivers, Folty was outrighted to their alternate training site. But he hasn’t been pitching. He’s been training to add strength leg and weight to his slight frame. Reportedly he has gained about 10 pounds of muscle and has been concentrating on strengthening his lower body. He’s supposed to start throwing again very soon

Also, secondary to that if you can believe it, both Ozzie and Ronnie have been cleared to start swinging a bat.

All big positive news from the Braves camp.

The ump way giving Nola a very!!! liberal strike zone last night and yet he was unable to take advantage. The entire Phillies team looked spent last night. They still managed some outstanding glove work by Kingery but poor Alec Bohm had three boots in one inning. Tough game eh?

Fried was great last night despite a tight zone. If he could somehow cut down on the full counts, he could easily go 7

Snit was none too happy about the way that final play was handled by the umps. I felt that the Braves forced the Phils to make that play, which they did to their credit, but I can understand Snit’s frustration. His post-game quote summed it up fairly well. It’s hard to argue his logic…

I mean… you can either block the plate or you can’t. Knapp clearly was blocking the plate, but the umpires’ reasoning for absolution was that the throw pulled him into the path.

But he was still blocking the plate. Regardless of why he was there, he was there.

So using the same logic applied for the catcher, shouldn’t the runner then be allowed to “blow him up”, as Snit said? If the catcher is blocking the path to the plate by his own fault or not, he’s in harm’s way. Period. Why should a throw up the line place the runner at a disadvantage? Makes no sense. If the rule is in place to protect the catcher and keep him out of the runner’s path, then any throw by the catcher’s own teammate that draws him into said path should penalize the fielding team, not the running team.

And taking it a step further, any savvy manager should just instruct his fielders to make their throws toward the 3B side of the plate on every throw. It clearly gives the catcher a free pass to block the plate and places the runner, still restricted from running through the blocker, at a disadvantage… exactly like Dansby last night who had no clear path to the plate and had to go completely around Knapp in his attempt to reach it.

I didn’t like it, but it’s the rule. And it cost the Braves the tie and a chance at another comeback victory. Baseball needs to fix this, or as Snit says, “… just take that off the books and start blowing up catchers again.”

So looking ahead, after today’s off day the Braves are widely expected to promote Ian Anderson to make tomorrow night’s start vs. the Yankees. Ha… I can hear it: “Hey kid, you’re going to The Show. Good luck.. You’ve got the Yankees. And Aaron Judge is expected back in the lineup.”

Seriously, though, this could be the start of the “Ian Anderson” era. He’s supposed to be that good. And if we can get him going this season, next season we’ll have a pretty good and young tri-fecta to toss at the rest of the league with him, Soroka and Fried. But he’s gotta prove he can make it here first.

Now… the technical side. Anderson is not on the team’s 40-man roster, so a move has to be made there first, then a move on the 28-man active roster. Who’s in danger of losing roster spots? Well, the quick answer for the active roster is Touki. Snit has clearly lost patience with Touki’s lack of control, as was evidenced by the former yanking the latter mid-count last night. How often do you see a manager take out his pitcher in the middle of an AB? Snit had enough and Touki was done. Since Touki has minor league options left, it’s easy to imagine he’ll be optioned to the team’s “alternate training site” in Gwinnett to join Kyle Wright, another pitcher that can’t throw strikes to ML batters. Not a lock, but seems plausible.

But who loses the 40-man spot?

I gotta be honest with you… I have no idea. There is no obvious or even speculative answer here. With reports that Cole Hamels will begin throwing bullpen sessions this week, he’s not going on the 60-day DL to clear a spot.

One might look up and down the current lineup and see if anyone is simply not contributing in 2020. That might suggest Alex Jackson, but you never really want to lessen catching depth. Barring a trade, none of the OF depth will be going anywhere. I’m just not seeing an obvious candidate to be shown the door.

So I circle back to 2 names. One is Charlie Culberson. Is he contributing anything more than just bench depth right now? He’s only made 7 PA’s and just gotten 1 hit. But he is 2B depth with Ozzie still on the shelf and he can play anywhere on the field you place him. The other name is… Matt Adams. He’s here to DH, but he’s slashing just .196/.229/.370 with 2 HR and 9 RBI. And 16 K’s. He’s the opposite of Charlie in that he can’t field anywhere but 1B, and he’s not even that great doing that. With Ozuna an easy DH replacement and with Ronnie coming back to the OF perhaps as early as tomorrow’s game, Adams could be the guy that’s DFA’d to make 40-man roster room for Anderson and active roster room for Acuña.

All that said, it is trade week with the deadline being just 7 days away. So anything can happen with the roster before tomorrow’s start, especially for a team that’s reportedly turning over every stone in the market for starting pitching.

So, you can ignore the last half of that last post. The Braves appear to have 1 spot already open on the 40-man roster. I suppose when Jhoulys Chacin was DFA’d last month the suits kept his spot vacant for some roster maneuverability.

Pache’s time will come. Many folks have complained very loudly about sender continuing to be in the lineup despite literally having the softest contact in all of MLB. But you don’t do anything to enhance his trade value by sitting him on the bench. He’s not the future, but he’s still the present, at least for now.

“sender”… ha ha.. autocorrect because I tried to post from my phone.

Ender, of course, is the person I was referring to. And the obvious question is, :Why would anyone want to trade for a light hitting OF’er who is just a couple of months on this side of 30?

Well, first you need to look for a team with atrocious OF defense. I immediately spot the Giants. Then you look for a team that’s already out of contention even though 16 of 30 teams will make the post-season. I immediately spot the Giants. Then you look for a team that could use a decent prospect or 2. I immediately spot the Giants. Then you look for a team with a valuable asset that is on a somewhat short-term expensive deal. I immediately spot the Giants.

Johnny Cueto is on the hook for $21,833,334 for both 2020 (prorated, of course) and 2021, w/ a team option for 2022. Ender is on the hook for $7,700,000 for 2020 (prorated, of course) and $8,700,00 for 2021, w/ a team option for 2022. Cueto is a veteran on a bad team that toes the rubber every 5 days and gives you 5+ innings each time. His 4.35 ERA doesn’t look that great, but his 1.129 WHIP does. And his 2.25 K/BB rate is also fairly appealing.

Look, Cueto is not an All-Start pitcher anymore, but he fits the bill of a steady veteran that will provide innings. Taking on that much salary may not sound reasonable, but subtracting Ender’s mitigates the hit, and it also lessens the prospect demand in return. It’s a simple equation that is common in the modern age of trading… the more money you absorb the less prospect capital you have to send in return.

It’s something to at least think about.

Truth is, you might be able to do a straight 1-1 deal if they really want to cut all of his remaining salary. It would analogous to obtaining Cueto in FA for $15M in 2020 (prorated, of course) and $14M in 2021. Considering the going market on starting pitching, that’s not outrageous. Dallas Keuchel got $18M for 2020; I’d rather have Cueto. Mike Minor is at $15M and Lance Lynn is at around $12M and either would cost a handful of good prospects.

Pache sticks. That’s significant to me. That means he wasn’t just the “only position player on the 40-man roster we could promote”. If you activate an OF that will play everyday, but don’t option the OF that came up to fill the roster spot… then that guy is not just filling a roster spot. That’s encouraging.

By the way, the statement earlier about Ender having the softest contact in MLB was not a generalized statement. He really does. It’s quantified. There is a stat that shows his contact is softer than all other qualifying hitters in the game. The Twins Miguel Sano has the highest avg exit velo in baseball at 97.7 mph. The highest recorded exit velo this season is Giancarlo Stanton (shocker) at 121.3. Ender averages 77.1, dead last among all qualifiers. If you stood at the plate and threw the ball at 77.1 mph, slower than most changeups, you’d barely reach an OF’er.

Prediction: Atlanta acquires Kevin Gausman … again
Acquired from the Orioles at the 2018 Deadline, Gausman helped Atlanta win the National League East title, but he struggled last season and was claimed off waivers by the Reds in August. Now with the Giants, Gausman has regained the velocity he lost last year, and his always-effective splitter has helped him record a 31.6% strikeout rate. The veteran right-hander is far from a sure thing. But with a thin market, this is the kind of chance the Braves have to take to rebuild a rotation that has been decimated by injuries. — Mark Bowman

The poop on Ian Anderson, plus some comments from his teammates, courtesy of AJC earlier this year…

Anderson’s angle cloaks the beginning of his release, giving him a millisecond more advantage. While his mid-90s velocity is well-documented, the ball unexpectedly explodes out of his hand. It’s aided his ability to throw down-and-away strikes, a trait some with the Braves felt was the most advanced they’d seen from a prospect prior to the 2016 draft. Anderson’s repertoire also features a power curveball and emerging change-up.

Ace in the hand Max Fried: “It’s definitely unique arm slots. It’s higher. There aren’t a lot of guys like that. When you have something that’s unique, that not a lot of people have seen or have, you’ll have an advantage. But at the end of the day, it’s about locating your pitches. I’ve played catch with him, we’ve been in the same group at spring training, and everything I’ve seen is really, really good.”

Ace on the mend Mike Soroka: “Ian is one of those games of catch that are a little different. A lot of times you’ll go play catch with somebody and you won’t see life on the ball, or you’re wonder where it is, or sometimes they’ll just turn it on when the game’s on. But Ian is one of those special arms where it’s got life. You catch some on the top of your pinkie, really, the first few times he’s getting into one. It’s deception, really. Deception arm speed. That’s why he was taken third overall.”

Why did the Braves wait until now to promote Ian Anderson despite all the starting pitching woes? He needed more seasoning? He wasn’t on the 40-man roster?

Steve Adams at MLBTR points out this detail: The Braves waited on Anderson long enough that he’ll miss out on Super Two status and the opportunity to accrue a full year of Major League service in 2020. As such, even if he’s in the big leagues for good, Anderson won’t be eligible for arbitration until after the 2023 season and won’t be eligible for free agency until after the 2026 season.

Looking ahead just a little… even though Pache survives this round of roster roulette, Nick Markakis could return at any time. He has continued to test negative for COVID, but the Braves are commendably playing it safe with his return. Still… it’s imminent and could come at any time. Best guesses says they’ll activate him prior to departing for the road trip that begins Friday in Phillie. It’s very unlikely they’d fly him commercially after they leave and they don’t return home until Sept. 4 against the Nats.

For my money, when the lefty doubles machine returns the Braves can send fellow lefty Matt Adams on his merry way and move Ozuna to full time DH, keeping Pache. That would settle the OF for the stretch run and allow them to sit Ender against pitchers that throw harder than he hits. Of course, that’s every ML pitcher except Mike Foltynewicz. 😀

    (Oh wait… he’s not a ML’er anymore. Ouch.)

if you had told me that a kid named Ian, (it IS Ian right?) would make his mlb debut and beat gerritt cole and the yankees AND fried would outduel tanaka and the same yankees on the same day i would have laughed at you.

with all the SP problems this team has faced they are still in first place in the division. masterful use of the bullpen? Snit for MOY? Thoppy for Exec of the Year?

what do we think? can this team really pull this off and win the east? if so, are they one and done in the playoffs barring any significant starting pitching improvements? most years (meaning those of the 162 game variety) after 30 games we would be able to see the writing on the wall regarding a heavily taxed bullpen. but THIS year is different. there are but 60 games in the regular season. can the bullpen hold together and win games like they have this year throughout the next 30 games?

with the offense this team is capable of producing it seems like this team does not need to empty out the farm to get an ace-type rental. they need someone that can eat innings. maybe Gausman is the perfect fit?

    what do y’all think?

Chris, it’s funny, but the bullpen is getting rested between ALL the off days, and if Snit and the starters can go a bit more into games, who knows??? It would seem 1 more decent starter would really help things…
Another good thing about a 60 game season…ok , the only good thing…is you really shouldn’t have to worry a ton about workload with Ian…I mean, worry more about pitch count, right? Innings shouldn’t be the biggest issue in the world.
And Ian Anderson….the definition of easy cheese! I don’t think I saw a pitch more than 95 MPH, but that change-up…sure is different! Some looked like a slightly tailing cutter , others seemed to drop seemingly too soon, but hitters kept swinging at it. That he could stay that calm in his first start, amazing!
And didn’t they say the first starter to go more than 5 innings other than Fried since Aug 6th?

Two things: Is there any doubt at this point that MLB is still using the 100 compression balls again this season?
Also, which teams have more than one Ace level pitcher this year? An awful lot of runs being scored this season. Of course having the DH in both leagues doesn’t hurt this happening.

    Blue Jays Acquire Taijuan Walker

The Blue Jays have grabbed the first notable starting pitcher of deadline season, acquiring righty Taijuan Walker from the Mariners in exchange for a player to be named later. Both clubs have announced the trade. The PTBNL, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal (Twitter link), is someone not currently in Toronto’s 60-man player pool.

well, apparently, a PTBNL can be a decent player, but can’t be a 2020 draft pick, If I read that correctly. But, the move can be made in the next 6 months. still, if he really was the best pitcher out there(That they knew of) man…I guess it can be good news for the braves as it won’t cost much to get someone…as long as they can spend some (any?) money.

The skinny seems to be that Thoppy wanted Kyle Seager in the deal, and that the teams simply could not come to an agreement on money coming with him and players going the other way.

As for topping the Jays’ PTBNL, those are typically chosen from an agreed upon list of players. And as with any trade, those players must be agreed upon. As Chris alluded to, Thoppy is not going to empty the farm system for a 6 start rental. Drew Waters’ name keeps being mentioned over and over again as the player teams are wanting from the Braves. That should not happen unless a really special pitcher with more than a half season of control is coming back in the deal.

well, probably just as well I miss the beginning of the game today….I was about to cancel baseball for if not the rest of my life, at least for the season after all the B.S. with the games being cancelled yet again, after a criminal (with an outstanding sexual assault warrant ) resisted arrest with a KNIFE , was turned into a saint.
Look, yes, we all know there is some racism out there, but , not what “they” are claiming. basically anyone white is a racist, and I am not going to be tarred and feathered with that crap!
and I have just been getting into the swing of things, watching quick pitch while riding my stationary bike…and I was subjected to half a “highlight” show instead talking about race. Of course, those who claim to want a frank discussion on race, do not really want that conversation, sadly enough. If only we could, there would be so many fewer, senseless deaths…

Being reported that the Braves are close to a deal acquiring LHP Tommy Milone from the Baltimore Oriels for 2 players to be named later. Okay, not earth shattering, no DeGrome or Verlander but it does allow the Braves to return Tomlin to the pen where he is most effective. Lots of lefties in the Braves starting rotation possibly.

Tommy Milone is officially a Brave and will start tonight’s series finale against the Phils. As was said, he’s no ace. But he is a back end pitcher that will eat innings and not walk a lot of people. And when your rotation has Josh Tomlin and Robbie Erlin in it, you need all the help you can get.

And there is still another 26 hours left to make deals. Milone comes at a very low cost, so his acquisition is in no way prohibitive to additional improvement.

He could be ready to return for a couple of regular season tilts before the post season begins. His experience will be invaluable once the playoffs start.

There are numerous reports swirling around what now appears to be the imminent trade of Mike Clevenger, arguably the most talented starting pitcher in this year’s trade market. The Braves have been mentioned prominently in connection with him. Via multiple reports, the Padres were considered the front runners with the best offer on the table, but a “mystery” team has now topped that offer. There is at least one writer who believes that team is in fact the Braves. Drew Waters is the guy that could be included to swing the deal.

    Stay tuned…

Raisins, i’m NOT poking at you here. i Know that’s why they got him but seven runs over 2.1 innings. OOOOF! and it’s hard to walk people when you give up more hits (8) than outs (7).

If the Federal law called Right of Rescission can be extended to baseball deals i hope Thoppy will invoke it first thing Monday morning!

in other news, if you weren’t watching the ESPN (yuck) broadcast they had an earpiece and microphone on Harper tonight and talked to him extensively through the game. I will give him a 1 game pass considering that earlier in the day he was on another team in another city, and had never worked with any of the catchers before pre-game tosses. It has to be the worst possible scenario to go from a sub-.500 perennial doormat team trailing 9 games behind the Yankees to a 1st place team with a lot of high expectations, and be expected to shut down a team with a handful of boppers in a little league park.

      Let’s re-evaluate after start #2.

with regards to a possible swap involving Drew Waters, two sayings come to mind.

“you gotta spend money to make money”

“strike while the iron is hot”.

by money, of course, i mean prospect collateral and if Thoppy et al think that this is a year they can make a serious run for it, then i say go for it. will it be a good deal? if they pull it off, let’s talk about it again after the WS ends. and then just for fun, let’s talk about it again in 5 years after Waters has had some time tin the bigs to see what he has done and then we can really evaluate the trade.

I’m with you. Mike Clevinger is a hard thrower with big game experience and sustained success for his career.

He has a 3.20 ERA for his 5 year career (including his intro year in 2016), and his 2019 campaign showed him take a step toward being a dominating pitcher as he jumped his K/BB rate to 4.57, including a 12.1 K/9 rate. He also is under team control until 2023.

If ever you are going to trade a prospect like Drew Waters, it’s for a pitcher like Mike Clevinger.

Going back to Waters specifically, where is he going to play? You’ve got Ronnie wrapped up for years to man RF and you’ve got Pache coming up to roam CF for the foreseeable future. You aren’t going to bring both Pache and Waters up in the same season, so Waters is at least a 2022 arrival. And let’s face it… LF is probably the easiest position to go out and sign in FA. Reliable starting pitcher is not.

And I’ll just toss this name out there or you to hang onto for a bit… Michael Harris. Here’s a kid that has all of Drew Waters’ tools with greater power potential. He’s a 2019 draftee that currently projects to be a 2023 arrival. He currently ranks as the team’s #14 prospect. He is a former pitcher with a rocket arm, has rocket speed, and has big time power potential.

They also have a jewel in Braden Shewmake who is currently at Gwinnett playing SS, but has the athleticism to play all over the field. He was drafted as a college standout who has plenty of game experience and an “advanced approach” at the plate. He’d be a fine LF if he had any time to acclimate to it. The organization is grooming him to stay in the IF, but he’s a kid that doesn’t need to be blocked and could be moved to clear a path to The Show as early as next year if necessary. And in reality, the 6’4″ Shewmake might physically profile better to the OF anyway.

In other words, Drew Waters is a prize prospect, but not a kid that we can’t afford to lose. We need solid pitching, and Waters might best serve the Braves as payment for such.

About last night… That has to be the first time a 10 run lead was not enough. Whew!

I am so glad to see Austin has stopped pulling off the ball. His head was moving when he was struggling earlier in the season but now his head is staying on the ball. He must have read my thoughts via ESPN…

Yep, one more start before I give up on Mr Milione…Of course with every hit he gave up, I could feel Alex’s resolve to hold onto Waters slipping away.

The other name that has been specifically tied to the Braves is Angels’ rightie Dylan Bundy. He might not sound any more exciting than Tommy Milone, but he’s actually having a pretty good season thus far in 2020. He’s carrying a 2.47 ERA in 7 starts in which he’s averaging 6.1 IP per outing, and he sports a sparkling 9.7 K/9 rate. In a rotation that currently trots out Josh Tomlin and Robbie Erlin, Bundy would represent a major upgrade.

It’s why I wish as a fellow lefty, I could have somehow gotten into the minor leagues cuz Tommy Milone is 33, and as you see, teams refuse to give up on him, and I truly believe with a lot of work, sweat and fortitude, I too could have had a 7.63 ERA in the majors! 😉

It’s hard to get too down on the Milone deal considering we sent 2 minor league players (to be named later) that weren’t even in the 60-player eligible pool. Are they throwaways? No, of course not. But the also are not anything that is honestly expected to help the ML team. Low level player capital… that’s about it. And if Milone does nothing else but to give some relief to an already overworked bullpen then his acquisition is worth it.

But as I’ve already mentioned, we simply cannot assess his value to us based on yesterday’s outing. It was the absolute worst set of circumstances to pitch for a new team.

That said, it also serves to underscore the dire nature of this rotation that you have to trade for a guy and fly him in on a private jet so he can that night’s start. Mind blowing.

Here’s a guy whose name was out front when trade speculation began, and then seemed to disappear as other names like Taijuan Walker, Mike Clevinger, Dylan Bundy, Lance Lynn and others gained momentum.

Robbie Ray was once considered the most likely guy to be traded before today’s deadline.

Then he went out and stunk up the joint every time out.

The back of his baseball card says he’s a quality pitcher, but the 2020 season says he’s their version of Mike Foltynewicz.

    Pass.

Recent news reports out of Phoenix say the suits would love to trade him, but that’s not the most interesting poop squeezing out of the desert. Those who report on the Snakes every day suggest that the team is listening on CF Starling Marte.

Be still my heart. We should have picked him up from the Pirates this past offseason, but that would have probably mitigated signing Marcell Ozuna. Could we end up with both? Can you imagine an OF with Marte in CF, Ronnie in RF, and a LF platoon of Duvall./Markakis with Ozuna DH’ing?

    I can.

just saw this info about the Starling Marte trade…. “Not long before the trade was agreed upon, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the D-backs throughout the day had been signaling to other teams that they don’t expect to pick up their $12.5MM club option on Starling Marte.

The aversion to picking up the option on Marte registers as a major surprise. It’s certainly not for any lack of production; Marte has been flat-out excellent in Arizona, hitting at a .311/.384/.443 clip with a pair of homers, eight doubles, a triple and five steals. His defense in center has graded out as +0.5, per Ultimate Zone Rating, and -2 per Defensive Runs Saved. Through 33 games, FanGraphs has Marte at 1.1 WAR, while Baseball-Reference has him at 0.9 — a pace that is roughly in line with Mate’s characteristic 3-4 WAR output.

Of course, the 2020 season has brought about some pressing revenue losses for all 30 clubs, and D-backs owner Ken Kendrick was among the most outspoken owners about the hardships faced by teams with fans unable to attend games. Kendrick pined for revenue sharing with players, placing the blame on them for the difficult negotiations and steadfastly expressing that owners would not green-light any scenario that saw games played into November.

Did money have an effect on Thoppy’s maneuverability? They will say it did not. I cannot say for sure.

But there is another factor that we have not even mentioned…

The package that the Pads gave up for Clevinger was loaded with highly rated lower minor league level prospects. And while the Braves have the #7 rated minor league system in baseball (at least before today’s redistribution), the vast majority of their top rated talent is at the higher levels. And we have the two Johns, Coppolella and Hart, to thank for that. So any deal the Braves could have made today would have severely stripped the system, and almost entirely of players in the 60-man eligible pool. And there would be nothing in the pipeline for a few more years thanks to the ongoing int’l market sanctions we are also enjoying.

Cleveland got back RHP Cal Quantrill, OF Josh Naylor and C Austin Hedges from their ML roster, along with minor league prospects SS Gabriel Arias, LHP Joey Cantillo and SS Owen Miller. That’s 3 ML’ers and three minor leaguers all ranked in their top 15.

The comparable prospect package for the Braves could not have included three ML’ers making that aspect a complete non-starter. But a workable package would have started with OF Drew Waters and probably needed to also include LHP Tucker Davidson and C Alex Jackson. You can also figure RHP Jasseel De La Cruz and OF Adam Duvall. That is one established ML’er and the Braves’ #2, #6, #9, #12, and #23 prospects.

It was simply not a realistic solution for the Braves.

Could they have matched up on Lance Lynn, Dylan Bundy or Joe Musgrove? Well, it takes two teams to tango and none of those pitchers was dealt by their respective employers. So the movement among starters today included the overpriced Mike Clevinger, the underachieving Robbie Ray and the underwhelming Mike Minor.

Maybe it just simply was not to be…

One other note on the Braves day today…

Here’s why I think that money was not a major factor in Thoppy’s inability to bring in another starting pitcher. Over the last 48 hours, the Braves were connected to all of Clevinger, Lynn and Bundy. Not just connected, but at points frontrunners with substantial offers on the table. None of that could be true if they weren’t willing to pay the freight that comes attached.

No, today’s quiet conclusion was simply the front office’s unwillingness to pay the high player price being asked. It’s the free market forces in effect. Fewer sellers and more buyers equals higher cost.

V, if money was a factor, would we expect them to mention that fact? They could make offers on the players you referenced above, but not , you know…good ones. Taijuan Walker was gotten for 2 PTBNL I mean…I know they could be decent guys, but , if he pitched well, they might sign him next year, right?
I mean, It seems the team braintrust has taken my attitude to heart that this season is basically a joke, get the kids some experience, and work towards next year. Seems no one told Snit this though. Taking Touki out 2-0 I simply cannot see as a productive move (Newt, Touki, etc are all going to be super gun shy now, better just throw it down the middle of the strike zone kid(s) you can give up 4-5 runs and keep making starts like Tomlinson does) and speaking of those 2, wouldn’t a team or 3 be interested in them in a package deal, since the braves are sick of them? How about trading Ender too? Oh right no one wants him, and it’s too late to build up trade value…keep running him out there though!
And who do you want to be in left in 2021 Ozuna (well, there isn’t going to be a DH we assume in 2021, correct?)
or Drew Waters? Are we going to run Cristian Pache and Waters next year and hope they both hit from the get-go ? I don’t know I just don’t get or see the plan
This year was kinda-sorta feeling like real baseball, and Thoppy HAS to know this team cannot, cannot complete in the playoffs. This rotation going to beat the Dodgers? Ha! The Padres? HA! Heck, even the Cubs? HA! let alone the AL teams….So V, what do you see as the plan going forward????

So V, what do you see as the plan going forward?

Plan? There is no other choice but to go forward with what we have. That’s it. We now must hope that we get some contribution from Cole Hamels, and we must hope that the project to strengthen Folty shows some results. We must also hope that Kyle Wright learns to throw strikes at Gwinnett and we must hope that Tucker Davidson continues his development. (FWIW, I think Davidson will be the next man up if we need a spot start. But I digress…)

I’m not sure what else you want me to say. I understand your frustration because I feel it too. But it still takes 2 sides to agree on a trade and you still have to be willing to pay a seller’s price in a seller’s market.

But I will ask you the question, what would you have been willing to give up for Mike Clevinger? I mention Clevinger specifically because he is really the only difference making pitcher that was swapped. Taijuan Walker would have been OK, but not great. Mike Minor has not impressed in 2020. Robbie Ray has been downright bad in 2020. The Rangers were not willing to trade Lance Lynn and the Angels were not willing to trade Dylan Bundy.

Who specifically who would you have traded for Mike Clevinger that would have topped the Padres give of ML’ers RHP Cal Quantrill (0.9 WAR), OF Josh Naylor (0.0 WAR), and C Austin Hedges (0.6 WAR), and minor leaguers SS Gabriel Arias, LHP Joey Cantillo and SS Owen Miller, now ranked #5, #15 and #19 respectively on CLE’s prospect list?

If you want to talk about non-pitchers, I am one who advocated for Kyle Seager or Todd Frazier, but as you yourself observed Austin Riley can be as good if not better than both when he’s on. And currently, he’s on… on fire. So why pay a price to replace him? I’d love to have picked up Starling Marte, but that would be a luxury considering the OF is probably the deepest position we are fielding. And the Fish gave up 2 young starting pitchers and a top pitching prospect to get him. It only underscores the sellers’ advantage in the market.

Good morning Stuffville, all interesting opines guys. The Braves are 6 games over .500 and their closest competitors are even at 15-15 with 4 games in hand but have to play each other… The Mutts and the Nats are done… Sure, they are not mathematically eliminated but really, are they a threat?

Yes, I was hoping the Braves would pull off a trade but maybe there is light at the end of the tunnel, Ian Anderson has a chance to prove last week’s gem against the Yankees was not a fluke. Then the bullpen games begin against the gNats.

Wasn’t last night’s game fun to watch? Hey, I thought so anyway. Dansby is having a monster year. Shows the difference in playing hurt/injured and being healthy. Austin has finally stopped pulling off the ball (moving his head) boy has it really allowed him to be a force. A lot of fans seem to forget a lot of the learning process normally experience in the minors has been by-passed by the necessity to rush kids to the majors. Folks, it is just not normal for baseball players to be great at age 23. This is especially true of pitchers but I digress…

We are almost 2/3 thru this season. Quick is isn’t it? A lot of the rules of a normal season just don’t apply this year. In a 162 game season the bullpen would be toast but with the short 60 game sprint, it is more like extended spring training especially when teams are have spots available for extra relievers.

Yes, with just 16 games remaining in the “regular” season for Los Barves, 4 games will be tough to catch since everyone is playing each other. It literally puts the head-to-head matchups under the microscope. The Braves have 7 more tilts with The Fish, but are already finished with the Phillies. Yes, we have no games remaining vs. the Phils.

But those 7 vs. the Marlins will be the ones to watch. Those will tell the tale of the NL East.

So back to the only remaining sources of rotation improvement for the Braves…

What’s Cole Hamels up to now? According to reports, he threw his second bullpen session yesterday with no issues. That means his arm is healthy and that he’s now in the phase of being “built up”. There does not appear to be a timeline assigned to him, but recent comments would lead you to believe he could get 1 regular season start before the post-season commences. And if it seems awfully optimistic to think he might help in the post-season, remember that Ian Anderson is now the #2 pitcher in the rotation after just 1 career start. That’s nuts.

And what about Folty? Well, it’s very hard to find anything on him at all, but I did dig up one report from a couple of days ago that says he’s put on about 10 pounds of muscle to his slight frame since his his reckoning and reclamation. And reportedly his fastball is back up to around 94 after sitting around 89-90 early in the season.

I’m not pinning any tangible expectations on either of them yet, but at least there is some semblance of hope that we might have more than 1 post-season starter that we can place some confidence in.

(With all due respect to Ian Anderson, he’s had 1 ML start.)

Yep, this might just be a season where Snit rivals Bobby’s manager of the year season of 2005 with the “Baby Braves”, Rarely has a team held onto first place with a pitching rotation consisting of a #2 and 4 #5s. Okay, to be honest 3 #5s but ya’ll catch my drift. If this was a normal 162 season, I would have wrote this team off the minute Soroka went down but as it stands, they just might pull off a win.

The Phillies have definitely shored up their bullpen and the Marlins are scary in that they don’t seem to understand they are supposed to roll over and go away. As for starters, are they Braves really any better? Heck, the entire NL East has starting staffs which are competing for the title of “Least of the East”.

Thank goodness for perhaps the best bullpen in baseball this season for the Braves. They might just pull this thing off.

Have heard some snippets of a radio interview that AA gave this morning. Two very interesting points came out… one that was not specifically stated but hinted (as AA will never mention names from talks), and the other very defined.

First, his comments would very easily lead you to believe that the Indians asking price for Clevinger from the Braves started with Ian Anderson and included Austin Riley, plus other non-specified prospects. No way, Chief Wahoo. No way that Ian is being included for anyone, so I can see why those talks went nowhere. (But perhaps that’s why they checked in on Kyle Seager? Pure speculation…)

Second, AA stated clearly that Tucker Davidson will not be moved up to the big club anytime soon. While they club still loves him as a prospect, he is “well behind the other guys” in his development, those pitchers being Kyle Wright and Bryse Wilson. So much for my ‘next man up’ tag. (Hopefully Kyle is working on his command and Bryse is learning a 3rd pitch. He needs to ask Ian how much better his other stuff can play up if he has an effective changeup to offer to ML hitters.)

I love having a pitcher who has swing and miss stuff but I also want a guy who understands that if he tries to strike out every batter he is not going to last past the 5th inning on most nights. A guy who can get a swing and miss after getting two quick strikes via foul balls is ACE material. How many times did we see Julio get two strikes but not be able to put a hitter away and eventually giving up either a base hit or a walk?

Keep it off the fat part of the bat boys and allow your defense an opportunity to be featured on plays of the week.

Now Ender… alas, until he realizes he is not a homerun hitter, he is going to continue to be the denizens of Braves Twitter favorite player to hate on. He has some skills but he he would make an effort to watch Nick Markakis at-bats, he would have an opportunity to bring a decent return as opposed to being the Ralphal Belliard of centerfielders.

Ozuna hit 3 homers, and I’d love to know how far the last one was to dead center on top of some , scaffolding, or whatever it was. Probably a lie like with that bomb Riley hit the other day, 427 ft they said…my aunt fanny!
and speaking of Riley have you ever seen him hit the ball to right field before? now it happens every day! keep it up kid!

Stat Cast is a fraud… I guess they didn’t want to hurt a young BoSox pitcher’s psyche. Yes, it’s amazing what realizing going the other way can do for your batting average. It appears a lot of the young Braves hitters have become true believers. A single to the off field won’t get you many replays on Baseball Tonight but it will win your team a heck of a lot of ballgames, not to mention driving in a bunch of runs.

The Bravos will need to score a bunch tonight with Erlin toeing the rubber for the good guys.

The Nick Markakis approach to baseball. No wow factor, but steady production. And don’t think for a minute that our youngsters learning to go the opposite way hasn’t been directly enhanced by the quiet leader. The Braves are a different team when Nick is in the lineup… like him or not. They just simply are. And it can’t be quantified by Fangraphs, thus he doesn’t get the respect he deserves.

Apparently that’s the plan for 2020. Outslug ’em. Not your typical Braves team, but it’s kinda fun to watch. Can we start thinking about extending Marcell Ozuna into 2021? You can bet the mortgage the DH isn’t going away, and he is a monster with a bat in his hands.

Having Ozuna in the line-up as a DH vs a left fielder might be swaying me to liking the Designated Hitter rule being adopted full time. Once you can plan your line up around a guy on a regular basis is much different than just using a guy for the spot when he is use to playing the field too. Takes a different mindset IMO.

Random thoughts: Ozuna has really made his prospects for 2021 bright. He will have to back up the Brinks trucks to carry the haul he will get. Don’t think for a second the folks in Boston don’t look at him and think, “a right handed Big Poppy” …

How much is Freddie Free going to ask for (and get) when his current contract expires? Rendon & Machato like numbers? Scary huh?

After all is said and done, if the Braves were to win the 2020 World Series, would we diminish the achievement with an astrixt or revel in it? Asking for a fried…

The Marlins are downright scary. Sixto is a stud. One of those players methinks the Phillies are going to wish they had not traded to the Fish to land Realamuto. Especially if J T moves on to richer pastures next season.

Prospect capital… is it real or imagined? Prediction, Cleveland will ride the 6 prospects gleaned from the Fathers to the World Series much as the Rangers did when the fleeced the Braves for Texiera. LOL; Elvis is still hitting homeruns for the Rangers and playing a stellar shortstop.

Prediction, whichever team win the season series between the Fillies and the Fish will be in the play-offs. The 7 games between the Marlins and the Braves in the final weeks of the season are going to be epic.

In another radio interview late yesterday, Thoppy reiterated that Cole Hamels has had 2 positive bullpen sessions and is progressing toward being activated.

He said, “I wish I had a date for you, I can just tell you what I know. He just threw his second bullpen on Sunday, felt really good, so he’s progressing. He’s going to face live hitters here very soon. And then the question becomes do we continue to build him up at the alternate site or do we just activate him, whether that’s an inning, two innings, three innings and just try to build him up at the big lead level. The fact that he’s now off the mound multiple times [and] he’s recovering very well, that’s the key.”

He also repeated what we heard Monday that Folty has regained strength with some additional weight and has his fastball back up into the mid-90’s. Nothing new there, but it’s something to remember.

This little tidbit that I picked up from Bill Shanks piques my interest a little, though… “GM Alex Anthopoulos said Tuesday that Mike Foltynewicz has gained more weight, and that Sean Newcomb has tweaked his delivery.

That’s the first I’ve heard his name mentioned since his purge. I’ll be honest… he is the one deposed Braves pitcher that boggled my mind. I thought this dude was for real coming into this year. The guy has all the physical tools in the world, and we’ve seen, AT TIMES, amazing stuff from the guy. In fact, the Dodgers saw no-hit stuff from him for 8.2 innings. If he can ever harness his talents, he could be a real weapon… even if just out of the bullpen.

Back to the topic of when to activate Cole Hamels…

Thoppy asked: Do we continue to build him up at the alternate site or do we just activate him, whether that’s an inning, two innings, three innings and just try to build him up at the big lead level?

As long as he’s healthy, when do you activate Hamels? If he’s capable of facing live batters, and the rust is not too heavy on the frame, why not go ahead and activate him? You’re only getting 4 innings max from each of Robbie Erlin and Josh Tomlin anyway. Give Hamels the start, even if just as an “opener” for one inning, then bring in Tomlin for the 2nd inning and beyond. If Cole can stretch it out an additional inning each time out, your pushing Tomlin further back in the game each time. How is that a bad thing?

An opine on Newk… Maybe it is like the proverbial “5 o’clock hitter”… He tightens up just enough to screw up his release point. Something like the “yips” but different. I guess that is why some pitchers don’t appear to mature until age 30 or so. That an realizing you have to learn how to pitch and not just throw.

All that said, I would hate to think the Braves gave up Andy Simmons for a guy only had one near perfect game in him.

About last night. The Braves were able to steal one. Okay, maybe that is not completely fair because Boston has thrown in the towel so it was not as if they were throwing out their number one against Eflin. Still, the, the offense did their job.

We were hearing so much about folks like Clevinger , et al. Pitching matchups for today’s double-header:

4pm – Tommy Milone vs Austin Voth
7pm – Josh Tomlin vs. Wil Crowe

At least we only have to cover 7 innings in each.

Pitching matchups for the rest of the series:

Sat – Erick Fedde vs TBD
Sun – Patrick Corbin vs TBD

Now Max & Ian are in line for those last 2 starts against the Nats, but I’m not so sure that the suits won’t throw their own curveball and decide to bring up an arm for a spot start on Saturday. In fact, I’m a little surprised that they aren’t using the “extra man” for today’s DH for that purpose. Then again, those DH games are just 7 innings, easing the strain on the bullpen. (It’s greatly speculated that Tomlin will not face their lineup more than twice, but I digress…) Anyway, I will not be the least bit surprised to see Wright or Wilson come up and make that start against Fedde on Saturday. It’s hard to find who has pitched when at the ‘alternate site’, so I have no idea who might be in line. I suppose Huascar Ynoa could get the nod. He hasn’t seen action since tossing 15 pitches on Tuesday. Why would they want to push Max & Ian back a day? Because they start a series against the surging Marlins on Monday, and I doubt they want to trust Erlin, Milone, and Tomlin with holding off the charge. If they can push Max back to Sunday, he can duel Corbin and let Ian lead off against The Fish and avoid Tomlin in that series. Ian, Erlin’ and Milone sounds alot better than Erlin, Milone, and Tomlin. And maybe by the time the wheel rolls around again, someone else – Hamels, Newk, Ynoa, etc. – will emerge as a viable candidate. Josh Tomlin does not need to start any more games.

We get the Nats in an early start today after they played a late extra inning game in Phillie last night where they let a late led slip away and got swept. First, I’m glad we don’t have any more face-to-face games against the Phils. But more importantly, the Nats look like a team that has thrown in the towel. And we won’t see Scherzer at all this weekend in any of the 4 matchups. This Braves team needs to step on their necks and not let up.

    TJ Quinn, ESPN.com:

The MLB plan to reduce affiliated teams from 160 to 120 is going to happen. MiLB headquarters in St. Pete will be shuttered and the leagues will be run from MLB headquarters in NYC. There are still a couple of big issues.

First, what happens to the teams that will lose their affiliation? MLB will present a plan in the next week or so to convert those clubs, mostly short season-A or rookie league, into “wood bat” leagues w college players. Others may become independent professionals. Many MiLB owners and execs say they hate that plan, that fans want to see future stars, not college players. MLB says fans won’t know the difference, the talent level is comparable. MLB will create and run those wood bat leagues so there is still baseball in those towns. They say they’ll pay administrative costs for teams that want to become independent professional. MiLB teams haven’t seen specifics yet.

The other top issue for the remaining 120 is security. MiLB owners are asking MLB for a lengthy agreement. If they need to put private and public money into facilities, they want to make sure their franchises maintain maximum value. And I do mean “asking.” They have no leverage.

Essentially, each of MLB’s 30 teams will have 4 affiliated minor league teams per club – AAA, AA, high-A and low-A, while the Rookie League teams will operate out of each team’s respective spring facilities. It does streamline things in a reasonable manner and make it more uniform leaguewide. Currently, the Braves have 6 minor league affiliates: the AAA Gwinnett Stripers, the AA Mississippi Braves, the high-A Florida Fire Frogs, the low-A Rome Braves, and 2 Rookie League teams, one that competes in the Appalachian League in Danville, VA and one that competes in the Gulf Coast League and plays out of their North Port facility. Both of those are short season leagues. The Danville team has been connected to the Braves for almost 40 years and will likely just be merged into the GCL club at North Port. (They also have a Dominican Summer League team, but I don’t believe that league falls under this purview.)

As I understand, the Fire Frogs were already on the chopping block even before they lost their park lease prior to this season being cancelled. So they’ll surely be axed. They were going to temporarily work out of the North Point park also, so it’s really not a facility loss to the Braves as much as it is a team move. Where will the Braves locate their high-A team? That’s yet to be determined, as another aspect of this reorganization will include a more “geographic realignment” of affiliates. The exact nature of that realignment is yet to be explained in any detail.

As long as all 30 teams are having to make the same adjustments, it’s probably a good move for MLB as an entity. But I do feel badly for the communities like Danville that will lose their MLB connection. On the other hand, Kissimmee had already evicted the Fire Frogs, so there’s that. And I do hope they don’t shutter the historic teams like the Chattanooga Lookouts who were among those prominently mentioned in the original contraction plan. It’s my understanding that the lists of targeted minor league teams has changed since it first surfaced, so perhaps the historic value of some of these old affiliates has been taken into greater consideration this time around. After all, the Lookouts are annually among the top teams in their league in ticket sales and attendance… and we all know money talks. Surely someone involved in this new plan has a little common sense. Then again…

A ML debut for a guy that deserves it. He was literally on the cusp of a callup 2 years ago when he tore the UCL and underwent the dreaded TJ surgery. At the time of his injury, he was throwing a mid-90’s heater with 2 strong secondary offerings that he was throwing for strikes. During his comeback, his stuff returned but his command has been slower to appear as his mechanics have been inconsistent. All of that is common to pitchers returning from elbow reconstruction so it’s not a concern. More importantly, the recent reports say that he seems to have regained his control and the suits obviously feel he’s ready to come up and help. I like the guy alot and think he can be a very good reliever if not an eventual starter.

I imagine Weigel will be the piggyback pitcher for Huascar Ynoa in game 2… unless he’s needed to bail Tommy Milone out in Game 1. I’m hoping that Milone will have a better outing today after being with the club for more than a couple of hours before toeing the rubber.

    Injury updates:

Ronnie will be back in the lineup today.

Ozzie is taking live BP and progressing toward live game action.

Cole Hamels will pitch his first live BP tomorrow and could make his ATL debut in mid-September.

Folty has gained 20 lbs and has his fastball back up in the mid-90’s.

So the pitching probables are now:

DH1 – Austin Voth vs Tommy Milone
DH2 – Wil Crowe vs Huascar Ynoa
Sat – Erick Fedde vs Max Fried
Sun – Patrick Corbin vs Josh Tomlin

Ian Anderson will start game 1 vs the Marlins on Monday.

    2day’s lineup:

    Acuña, CF (Yay! No Ender!)
    Dans, SS (En fuego)
    Freddie, 1B (Duh)
    Marcell, DH (En fuego-er)
    Nicky, RF (Underrated)
Riley, 3B (Has a firm grip on the job now.)
    Duvey, LF (He’s been lifting.)
Flow, C (Hopefully he can help guide Mr. Milone.)
Hechavarria, 2B (Johan has lost his grip of late.)

Tommy Milone, LHP (“Mr. Milone” sounds more like a school principal than a pro athlete.)

I guess Milone earned another start after today’s effort. The Braves defense saved his bacon several times but that is what they are getting paid to do so there is that.

The gNats are playing like a last place team. Lots of lollygagging going on. Lets hope they continue phoning it in this weekend.

Oh well, it was a half full kind of a day yesterday. I guess Patrick Weigel appears to not be ready yet for Prime Time… Tough game to lose actually, do folks realize how close Charlie Clutch came to being the winning pitcher in game two?

Okay, it is in the past now, enter all the data in the computer and look forward to tonight’s match up.

Well, hello fellow Stuffians. Happy Labor Day! Today is the first day in a very long time, I’ve felt like joining the world, if only for a little while. Finally got some good sleep last night and I seem to have cleared one of the bad medications from my system and the good ones are acting. Hope is on the horizon.

I checked and couldn’t find a new lead anywhere, so I guess all that has passed by while I was out of commission. Hopefully I can get caught up in the near future.

Haven’t been able to write a single word in the new book, so that awaits me as well.

    Luv to all of you,
    CL

Well, V, I got your new lead up finally, but I’m afraid with all the C19 requirements, etc, the graphics department is offline for the time being, so I apologize for that!
