196:Down at the Crossroads

July 16, 2021

Gil ‘N Mechanicsville

The old folk lore has it that Delta Blues icon Robert Johnson Jr. went down to the crossroads to make a deal with the devil in order for him to become great blues guitarist. Perhaps the Braves have come to that same crossroads. I am not saying Alex Anthopoulos has to make such a trade but we already know Liberty Media is a godless entity so there is that. For sure 2021 has been a season fraught with peril. The loss of outfielder, “The Devil Made Me Do It” Marcel Ozuna. The absence of Silver Slugger Travis d’Arnaud, who was all thumb early in the season also to put a serious dent in the batting order. The failure of Mike Soroka to quickly recover for his Achilles injury first to rejection of the sutures used to secure the tendon and lastly for repair to simply fail while walking into the dugout hampered the Brave return to full strength in their rotation.

A brief fit of rage waylaid emerging star Huscar Ynoa when he vented his frustration with disappointing outing by punching a wooden bench with his pitching hand and breaking two bones. Didn’t he ever see the advice Kevin Costner gave to Tim Robbins in “Bull Durham”? Note to Alex: put a punching bag in the tunnel for such occasions.

Of course the team was a bit snake bit before the start of the season with owners Liberty Media playing the tight wad and preventing Anthopoulos the financial flexibility to sign Mark Melancon and Darren O’Day for the 2021 season. Melancon was not a strikeout king like Craig Kimbrel but he has been very effective in closing games for the San Diego Padres going 27-3 in save opportunities this season. That is Just a tad bit better than the entire Braves staff this year who have a perchance for blowing leads it seems.

I won’t mention Shane Green any further than to say, WHAT”S UP WITH HIM?

Perhaps all of the maladies which have befalling the Braves this season is bad Karma for not signing Freddie Freeman to a long term contract over the winter. It is my personal opinion that the failure to do so put the amiable first baseman into a slump at the plate which lasted for much of the first half of the season. Combined with the loss of Ozuna and d’Arnaud and the failure to launch with rookie centerfielder Christian Pachae, the Braves offense has pretty much been Acuna and Ozzie Albies with an occasional contribution from Austin Riley.

The replacements thrown into the breach are quad A players who can provide a temporary stop gap and even give some great effort but there is a good reason as to why they are not really everyday players, they are easily exposed. Having to use bench players regularly does two things, 1. they are never as good as the people they are replacing and 2. it weakens your bench.

No one would ever count on a starting outfield consisting of the like of Guillermo Heredia  , Abraham Almonte  and Ehire Adrianza to anchor a championship contending team. That is what the Braves had after Acuna’s season injury to his ACL last Friday in Miami. That is more like what the Pirates or Orioles would go to battle with.

Not saying the aforementioned are bad players, it is just the are more like the type of players you would call upon for bench support. Even Dansby Swanson’s woeful plate appearance could be overlooked if he was surrounded by an offense which could be counted on to come thru in the clutch but with him hitting 5th or 6th in the order, opposing pitchers can relax once they are past the first four batters. Something they could not do last season. I will forego the usual Swiss cheese analogies when describing this season’s line up but folks, YOU KNOW…

I have not even mentioned the Braves current bullpen woes but that won’t settle down until the starting staff solidifies. Opposing teams lick their chops when watching pitchers warming up to come in for the 6th inning. The have visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads as opportunities to fatten their batting averages abound.

Alec Anthopoulos was dealt a short hand in the pre-season by Liberty Media and Brian Snitker will get much of the blame for all the shortcomings of this team but he can only drive the horses he is given. I’m sure he feels he is in a quandary every time he has to make a pitching change. I could write a tome on the disappointments of Tyler Matzek, Shane Green, Chris Martin, A J Minter, Will Smith, Edgar Santana and recently sent down Sean Newcomb and Jacob Webb. If feels strange to say the only reliable pitcher coming out of the pen these days is Luke Jackson.

This week AA made a trade with the Cubs picking up lefty hitter Joc Pederson who will sub for Acuna, no, not idea but at least an effort to shore up the outfield. Sadly, there is still much that is needed to be done. While it is too early to give up on this team, they have yet to break past the .500 mark this season. The schedule for the Braves gets hard for the three weeks post All-star break with the Padres, the Dodgers and the Mets on the menu. Were it not for the Mets getting off to such a rocky start, I am sure the Braves brain trust would have thrown in the towel by now but there is still and opportunity for them to break through but frankly, I would be very surprised to see it happening at this point.

The only positive I see with the upcoming schedule is the Braves often play up to their competition.

Pretty sure that well is dry right now, All are just too green at this point. I would imagine outfielder Drew Waters is a hopeful but he has a tendency to strike out at this point. He may well be a trade chip at this point.

Despite the trade for Pederson, the Braves had a need for a power hitting outfielder even before Acuna went down. I suspect the trade for Pederson was in the works before Acuna’s injury.

I suspect insurance will pay Joc’s salary. I look for more action to take place pretty soon. Teams with sellable players know it will be a seller’s market soon. Too bad Liberty Media is so cheap, Kimble could likely be had for the price of his contract and a so so prospect.

    Housekeeping:

Since Bryce Ball was not in the team’s 40-man roster, Joc Pederson fills one of the vacancies. With today’s reinstatement of Touki Toussaint from the 60-day IL, said 40-man roster is now full.

BTW, Pederson was not expected to arrive at Truist Park in time to be in tonight’s starting lineup. Hopefully he’ll be available for the bench. He’ll fill the active roster spot of Ian Anderson, who was placed on the 10-day IL today with shoulder inflammation. The good news is that his MRI showed no structural damage so he’ll just require rest. There are some who believe this is the organization’s way of throttling back in his innings since he’s already at 96 IP pitched. He’s never pitched more than 132 in a season in his professional career. Regardless, he’ll be out at least a couple of weeks and maybe a little more as he’ll need to get back into shape after said “rest”. In the interim we’ll almost certainly see Kyle Muller assume the 4th rotation slot with Bryse Wilson the most likely candidate to fill the #5 slot until Ian comes back. Touki should be considered a possibility as well… especially if the team wants to showcase him before July 31.

You are correct sir. Chavez was given the loss but it was Chris Martin and AJ Minter who were the major culprits. What happened to these guys over the winter?

The Padres bludgeoned the Nats last night 24-8 and the Pirates continued their resurgence with a 4-1 victory over the Mets.

At least Marlins’ fans have an excuse, they are rebuilding for the 20th year much like the Angles and the Pirates but at least the Fish have a NEW management team which understands it takes time and money to build a winner.

Tampa Bay fans don’t appreciate what they have.
Matt Wisler? Who could have thunk it?

Liberty Media is a real estate developer who uses the Braves like Ted Turner used them to build up TBS. At least Ted was willing to spend money to bring talent to the team. Ted should have been smarter than to allow the NY Times to swindle him out of his empire.

Stephen Vogt does have some game experience in the OF and at 1B to go along with his more familiar catching job. Not alot, but enough to get by in a pinch. (Get it… pinch? Nevermind.)

The overall point, though, is that he does give you a little more depth to the bench, especially when you consider that Pablo Sandoval is just a 1 dimensional hitter with nothing else to offer. But we’ve talked about that before.

At this point AA is just in damage control mode, patching holes and placing bandaids. If he wants to make a real impact, he’ll get serious with the Cubs about Kris Bryant. KB won’t solve all of the team’s needs (bullpen, heard of it?) but acquiring him will keep him away from both NYM and WAS, both of whom are rumored to be in on the soon-to-be-FA slugger. If Bryant lands on one of those 2 teams, or I’ll even lump the Braves in there too, it gives that team an instant leg up in the NL Least.

I’ll reiterate for the occasional fan and stopper by, if the Braves don’t make some real changes in the bullpen, there will be many more games that end just like last night’s.

Well, watching the highlights on quickpitch…I had a couple of thoughts….hey, I have them every once in awhile
. they showed Joakim Soria closing out a game for AZ (no team is worse than they are) and I thought…I didn’t even know he was pitching in the NL. 4.78 ERA, but he’s on…the worst team in baseball. Last year for Oakland, 2.89 ERA. He’s 37, so they won’t ask a lot, I would think….he walks about a runner every 3 innings, which sounds wonderful after watching Minter….and, they have another guy that could help, not in the bullpen, but in the outfielder…already a fan fav here….Kole Calhoun! He hit 16 homers last year, in a 60 game season. Hardly played this year, and he’s in a platoon , on a team that’s the worst….in baseball.
    https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/baseball/news/diamondbacks-kole-calhoun-heads-to-bench-792267/

I know, not the sexiest players, but I think they could help, and everyone is going to look to improve their team, save about 10 teams or so…so the Joey Gallo’s etc are going to take a hefty prospect hall to get, and teams like the Mutts, or Nats might just get those guys…

looking at Kris Bryant…man, like DOB said in his article, seems unlikely the braves would trade away prospects for a rental (Borass is his agent) let the Mutts , Phils or Nats overpay for 2 months of his service. I mean, he’s good, no doubt, but he doesn’t seem like he’s great these days, you know?

At some point one has to ask, “What is really going on with the Braves’ pen”? Is it the change in the bullpen coach made during the off season?

I fear by the time the Braves get it all straightened out, it will just be too late to make a difference.

Gil, I am wondering about the pitching coach myself. I swear, every time he goes out to the mound, and gives the guy some advice, and pats him on the chest a few times, next thing you know, its a hanger that gets crushed….
I think even AJ Minter was helped during the 2019/2020 offseason by Josh Tomlinson, when they were working out together…..
teams like the Rays, etc have guys that turn around guys that were just so-so…instead, we have guys that were so-so to very good, regress….
can you name anyone that was fixed here? Why did Kevin Gausman have a 6.19 ERA here, and a 1.73 in San Fran? (and who had money on Gabe Kapler taking that rag-tag Giants team to 1st place in Mid July, playing better than the Pads or the Dodgers?????)

You ever get the feeling the only person in the entire baseball universe who doesn’t realize the Braves bullpen is a dumpster looking for a match. Much like the year the Braves traded for Texiera.

Get off the money Liberty, allow for Alex to spring for Kimbrel, You can’t cheap your way into the play-offs. Kimbrel would only require money and a so-so prospect.

Pederson is a good pick-up. He adds lefty balance, power and can replace Ozuna next season in left.

Not as funny as it could have been: Chip extolled newly acquired catcher Stephen Vogt’s prowess behind the plate, what happens? You guessed it, ball thru the 5 hole under his glove and runner advances to third, next the batter hits a sac fly scoring the runner from third…. SIGH!

On radio they were talking about how Touki has changed his mechanics… shortened his windup, more compact, quicker to the plate, seemingly more “explosive” release. Whatever it is, it’s working.

Touki has always had great stuff, but was consistently inconsistent… or something like that. If he can ever hone it in he can be deadly.

I’m still waiting for them to convert Bryse Wilson to a late reliever. I think that’s his best role. But what do I know?

    From MLBTR:

The Indians announced in a video package on Twitter this morning that their new franchise name will be the Cleveland Guardians. It was reported last night that a decision had been reached and an announcement could be forthcoming.

The franchise announced early last July that a name change was under consideration, and by December it had become clear that the organization would move forward with a new name in the near future. The team selected “Guardians” from a list of as many as 1100 initial possibilities.

The new “Guardians” moniker is a nod to the eight statues along Cleveland’s Hope Memorial Bridge, referred to as the “Guardians of Traffic.” The name has been among the reported favorites for some time now. Others in consideration including the Spiders (a callback to the late-1800s Cleveland baseball franchise) and the Rocks or Rockers (as a nod to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame)

What a stupid name. From iconic to moronic in 60 seconds.

and come next year, or two, when someone says….anyone can close a game….slap them like Batman does to Robin in all those memes and remind them, that only seems to work for teams like the Rays….
speaking of the Rays…..do you realize they are this good, and that’s after trading Ian Snell to the Pads, losing Tyler Glasnow to Tommy John, and oh yeah, letting Charlie Morton go…

!8 of our 20 draft picks have signed thus far, including our top 10… well, actually our top 15. Only round 16 choice P Kris Anglin and round 20 selection OF Ty Evans are still unsigned. Anglin could go either way. As a college junior, he could go back for his senior year and hope to be selected higher next year. But he could just as easily go undrafted next season, so I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that signs his deal. High-school OF/P Evans on the other hand will almost certainly honor his college commitment to Florida.

As I have a great, great grandmother who was full blooded Pamunky Indian, I always thought it was a sign of respect and honor to be known as the Braves or Indians etc… I get that the name Redskins could be off putting as it is a slur to many, the Warriors, Braves, Indians etc I see more as a tribute but then I am not offended by every puff of wind.

What irks me is for people to be suddenly offended by something they were never offended by before some one pointed out that they should be.

I get pretty offended by so many Damn Yankees moving here and telling me how great things were in the north. If it is so great, move back, I won’t mind…

Now, in other baseball news, the Mets acquired Rich Hill from the Rays.

Yep… the contenders are making moves. Just 8 days until the deadline. Can the Braves afford to wait until after the Mets series to assess their position? I posit that the top names will be gone by then. That decision needs to already be in the back pocket of the front office, and due diligence should already be in the process of being performed on potential additions. I fear that there will be no real substantive moves outside of picking up the scraps from those teams that are having to make roster subtractions to accommodate their impact additions.

Like I said, I am afraid to make any recommendations other than not let money be a deterrent. I figure Liberty is not an outfit that allows for unspent funds to be incumbered.

So, make the big move and get Kimbrel, he may not be the guy he once was but he is head and shoulders above anyone they currently have. I doubt the Cubs will want much in the way of prospects, just take the pay-roll off their hands and if the team takes the Braves can always flip him.

They still need that big bat. Going to take prospects for a Gallo or Bryant but it is what it is. Stars cost money, if it’s one thing I hate is for a franchise to be cheap. The cheese eaters at Liberty need to recognize how much more valuable their franchise is with a winning team verses perennial also rans.

Look, even the best hitters are going to fail 70% of the time. The real difference is having a guy with ice water in his veins.

One thing that makes things tough is what is the long term deal with Ozuna.

I like Arcia, Adrianza and Almonte. I think they would really solid bench players but everyday, not so much. Guillermo Heredia has been a pleasant surprise but he is not a gold glove center fielder. Pache appears to be getting his feet under him again at triple A and I expect he will be a lot more ready to be the everyday guy in 2022.

Problem there is that he will be in demand from other teams as well, so the price may be more than we think. I’m not so sure that this team, which can’t even get above .500, is the team to go all in with. I’m not so keen to overpay for a short-term rental for a 2021 season that in and of itself can’t get out of the training room.

Now if you can get more than a few months’ control, that’s different.

The offense has surprisingly still been pretty potent even with the massive injury losses. That horrid bullpen is the true difference between us being in 1st place and being 5 games back. They’ve taken 22 losses on the season, 4th worst in MLB. There’s where the problem squarely lies. Would I like another big bat? Sure. But that’s not where I’m clamoring right now. I can live with Pederson/Heredia/Arcia/Almonte. (And for what it’s worth, I believe we have a real gem in Arcia. That kid’s gonna be really good… mark it down.)

One last note, I’m starting to be of the opinion that we may want to explore trade options for Cristian Pache before the luster is too far gone from the prospect. He’s a great defender, but I’m not so sure he’ll ever be more than a mediocre hitter at the ML level. That used to be enough for an elite defender, but not anymore. And with Drew Waters and Michael Harris (the next real stud in the pipeline), the OF has enough solid OF prospects to maximize Pache’s value as a trade asset. He might be the only way to get a solid trade return that’ll help beyond 2021.

Nope. If they claim him off waivers, they’re on the hook for the remainder of his contract. It’s a virtual lock he’ll go through untouched. He can then be outrighted to AAA. I believe he has enough service time to refuse the assignment and elect free agency. But if he does, he abandons his current deal.

Magnificent performance by Touki today wasted by an anemic offensive performance. To hang that loss on Trussant is criminal in my opinion. It rest squarely on the shoulders of Chris Martin in my opinion.

The acquisition of Joc Pederson was a good one but one that should have been done months ago. Joc would have been a much better option than either of the quad A players the Braves have manning left field now. Pederson can’t replace Acuna but he sure would replace Ozuna. I don’t know the workings going on behind the scenes at Braves Inc. but Liberty media has hamstrung AA this season.

Liberty Media’s investment in the Braves is being run like a company in a hostile takeover and are looking to sell off parts to add to the bottom line of Liberty at the expense of the team and its fans. They are too near sighted to realize that the value of the entire enterprise in in the Braves fielding a consistent winner.

Having 3 1/2 consistent hitters is not going to cut it.

Like they say, GO BIG OR GO HOME….

Money alone does not guarantee a winner but it sure does improve one’s odds.

Actually, it is pretty amazing the Braves have hung around this long given the pitiful bullpen supplied by the management.

Times, who cites “two people with knowledge of Dodgers clubhouse dynamics.” Bauer’s paid administrative leave from the Dodgers, which the club has previously extended twice, runs through tomorrow. In late June, news surfaced of an ex parte temporary restraining order a San Diego woman obtained against Bauer after she alleged sexual assault.

How horrible of a person must a guy be to have that kind of talent and nobody wants him on their team? I pity him. I hope he finds true redemption from he only One that can supply it, not for his baseball career but for his life.

Can’t let opportunities slip away like that. But I do believe that the Braves are just as good a team if they can just put together some kind of winning streak. Needed Game 2 last night. That hurt. Pitching did its job. The lack of length in the lineup was really magnified in the twin bill. It makes me wonder what kind of impact would be made by just adding a bona fide ML bat to LF?

I don’t think I have ever seen a more schizophrenic team than the 2021 braves. I almost dread it when they score more than 10 runs, cuz it seems the next day, they can’t score at all. But, it is fun to see them beat up (at least for a day) the Phils and the Mutts…I mean, the mets are without not one #1, but really 2 of them, (remember Thor?) they should be primed to pass…by some team…

I saw the list of available players, and man….unless there is someone they forgot on MLBTV (actually, they did forget Kole Calhoun, who I imagine you could get for nothing and he hit 33 HR’s in 2019, but another Joc, low ave guy) there just isn’t a Fred McGriff to save us :/

So, may be more bullpen guys, which if had some performing as they did in 2019, 2020, we’d probably be in a tie with the Mets, or even ahead of them….

For my money, which it obviously isn’t, I think AA could make 2 moves that would set this team in a solid position to win another division championship. (And once in the playoffs anything can happen. It’s always the hottest team that moves on, not necessarily the best team.)

Move #1, acquire a real closer. Will Smith is not a closer. Insert Cubs Craig Kimbrell or possibly Angels Raisel Iglesias, and everyone else suddenly has a more defined role. Remember, those are guys that have done it before. Knowing who the daily door slammer is might make the sum of the parts better than the individuals have been up to this point.

Move #2, add a real bat to CF or LF. Guillermo Heredia has done an admirable job having been thrust into the everyday CF job, but he’s batting in the 8 hole for a reason. Likewise, Abraham Almonte has been good at times. But “just good” isn’t good enough in a pennant race. I like both these guys for my bench. I’m over Pablo Sandoval. He can go. Adding a power bat to hit behind Austin Riley, allowing Dansby to move back down to 7 or 8, lengthens the lineup and eliminates whole innings of offensive hopelessness. And bumping Almonte or Heredia to the bench strengthens that as well. Rangers LF Joey Gallo is the big name mentioned, but there are others I like. Tigers LF Robbie Grossman is an under the radar guy. Pirates CF Bryan Reynolds would be a good one. (And yes, I’m admitting that Almonte is better than I gave him credit for earlier in the year.)

Don’t forget that Travis d’Arnaud is about to start a rehab assignment in the next few days, so that bat is coming back soon too, along with P Huascar Ynoa who might help this team best in a relief role.

Given what we’ve seen from the Phils and the Mets over this last week, there’s no doubt in my mind that the Braves can be the best team in the division. Adding a closer and a bat would solidify that IMO.

Yep, I have been beating that drum for a while now. I doubt it would really take that much in prospect capital, mostly just money for Dirty Craig. (salary) and in today’s environment, he is not really all that expensive.

Bryant is just a bit more in prospects but hey, he is a known entity.

There is a lot of money on the table with Ozuna and I don’t know who is waiting on what… He is either going to be reinstated or not but I would think it is more MLB’s call. The Braves could put him on the restricted list and void his contract if he is found guilty of battery but then again I suspect we don’t really know the whole story. Yes he was witnessed by the POPO but what were the circumstances which led up to it? Evidently it was a situation where someone called the police prior to the incident was witnessed.

Anyway, I don’t think Alex is calling the shots on the trades right now. Hopefully the Braves are not being operated like the Pirates use to be where every trade had to be approved by a committee and by the time they finished arguing the other teams had moved on.

One thing for sure, I don’t believe the Braves have the horses needed to overtake the Mets as they are currently constructed. Joc Peterson would have been a great add before Acuna went down. Now it is just a patch.

Because this is a criminal investigation, the authorities will take copious amounts of time building their case before it ever gets on a calendar. And also, because it’s an “ongoing” investigation, no one can or will make any comments regarding its status or anything else.

Our lineup’s biggest issue bore its head tonight perfectly. With the game on the line, we sent up Abraham Almonte, Guillermo Heredia, Ehire Adrianza (for Stephen Vogt), and Pablo Sandoval. As was illustrated, any one of them can get a hit and get on base. But to expect that group to string hits together is just not realistic. And so tonight’s tying run was left on base at game’s end.

The Mutts starter looked to be really shaky early on, but the braves couldn’t capitalize….once again.

Nick Green made a good point (I know!) the other day, that one reason the Panda did so well in April, was he got to play a lot in spring training, and his bat carried over into the early part of the season. Now, I know Snit has seen much, much more baseball than I have, but….he should have had Panda take over at 3rd in some of these blowouts….yeah, he’s fat, but….he’s always been good defensively, in spite of his girth ….but, if all he his is a pinch hitter, now for the braves, they might as well release him. I gotta be honest, Joey Gallo wasn’t at the top of my list. He’s not a good defender anywhere on the field, and he’s a strikeout machine. Yes, he’ll hit the ball a mile from time to time, but he’ll also air condition the stadium quite a bit. After all, the Rangers aren’t exactly winning with him, now are they? Guys who strike out that much are rally killers. I’d rather have a guy that’ll give me better AB’s than a Rob Deer type player (too obscure?)

And while the Yanks seemingly didn’t give up alot, they still gave up 4 ranked prospects (their #14, #15, #23, and #28) for a player with 3 months left on his contract.

AA has stated that he’s not interested in rentals anyway. He’s wanting players with at least 1 more year under contract. Hard to blame him for that stance this year.

One more item before I return to the world of the working…

The Braves offense is awfully inconsistent right now because the batting order is so screwed up. And that’s not Snit’s fault. He doesn’t want to hit Dansby in the 5 hole, but who else does he have?

As I’ve said repeatedly, you cannot compete night after night with Almonte/Herredia/Vogt/pitcher comprising almost half the lineup.

So does that mean adding just 1 more bat is a fruitless venture? Oh… nay, nay. Remember, they’re also about to get the reigning Silver Slugger award holding catcher Travis d’Arnaud back in a couple of weeks. He began his rehab assignment last night.

So the lineup could reasonably transformed with just one more power bat. You go from:

    Joc –> Joc
    Ozzie –> Ozzie
    Freddie –> Freddie
    Riley –> Riley
    Dansby –> new guy
    Almonte –> d’Arnaud
    Herredia –> Dansby
    Vogt –> Herredia/Almonte
    pitcher –> pitcher

    Doesn’t that look alot better?

And the same logic can apply to the bullpen. With Huascar Ynoa also returning soon (also already begun his rehab assignment), you have a very viable arm returning to the bullpen. Just add a closer and the whole pen is transformed. Newk… gone. Santana… gone. And yes, Ynoa will most likely return to the pen, not the rotation. Kyle Muller and Touki Toussaint are pitching well and the rotation has not been the problem at all. Plus, if you don’t have to stretch Ynoa out, he can return to action sooner.

Power OF bat and closer. That’s the formula.

I gotta be honest, Joey Gallo wasn’t at the top of my list. He’s not a good defender anywhere on the field, and he’s a strikeout machine.

V, I’m sorry, but you must be confusing Gallo with someone else…he’s one of the best Right fielders in the game!

Unlike many sluggers, Gallo also offers quite a bit of value on the other side of the ball. Advanced defensive metrics have long pegged him as a plus right fielder, and he won a Gold Glove award last season. He’s best suited in the corner outfield, but Gallo also held his own during a run of center field play in 2019, and has plenty of experience at first base as well.

He’s basically a younger (by 2 years) Joc Peterson, with a lot more power. (Joc has a career .231 BA, but I have to say, I really like his A’B’s against lefties)

But, it’s a moot point. Who is gonna be that power outfield bat? Duvall? No? well then, AA can hug his swell prospects just a bit harder, and brag about not spending them on a difference maker, even if only for 2 + months…

He may think the braves are going to forever compete, but…the Mutts are likely going to be the Dodgers of the East coast. They have an owner with ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD….and Liberty is seeing all this moola rolling in while fielding a .500 team that hasn’t won back to back games since the all-star break! Why spend more, when a mediocre team will draw 2 + million fans? Unless, and until something changes (I think a strike next year, or changing the braves name would about kill the team ) fans will show up…and the stores will make money nearby….

    Prove me wrong A.A, please!

In a bidding war, it is good to be the seller…

You can never out bid the guy who A. has deeper pockets than you & B. has no regard for money.

Examples: Exhibit A. The Yankees, Exhibit B. The Dodgers….

Looking back…. Ted Turner was a genius until he got snookered by the Times Syndicate. He did not look past the money to realize he was being shut out until it was too late. Of course, anyone who would marry Hanoi Jane could not be but so bright but I digress.

He was not blind to what it took to build a winner. MONEY…. All those years the Braves were winning year in and year out, the Braves were in the top three in payroll. Look it up.

Yes, I see dominos falling all around Atlanta but I fear there is more to the story than just prospects. All those years of being shut out of the international market has played a role in making AA reluctant to trade away young talent.

      Just my opinion…

was reading the MLBTR posts after the “trade” (guess it could still fall through) Pads fans were not too happy…
amazing that 2 top prospects and 2 meh guys, can get you a top 5 starter (granted, 37 and they only have him for 2-3 months, unless…they like his work and give him double what FF will get) and the what, 2nd best SS in the game? Typically, you here these crazy, it’ll take 2 top 10 guys and 2-3 other good prospects to just get one excellent player. They have no room for that catcher, and the starter, well he’s not been so hot, in 2 starts this year…we shall see….the Dodgers go deep in the playoffs, IF they win their division.

Hope we play the Nats a lot the rest of the season. cuz they are going to suck this year…how would you like to be a Nats fan right now?

The big bat left on the carousel is Kris Bryant. I know that AA is not in that market, but I do wonder where KB lands. San Fran is a good possibility. They have to do something to fend off the free-spending Dodgers and Padres. I hope the Mets do not land him, but they’ve been discussing him. Meanwhile, other Cubs have already been on the move with Rizzo dropping in NYY and and couple of relievers dispersing outward. Whither Craig Kimbrel? I wish the Braves could pull off a package deal ala LAD and pick up both Bryant and Kimbrel, but I imagine AA will bring in some obscure reliever and an OF who peaked in 2019. Or we’ll hear the tired old line that getting d’Arnaud and Ynoa back is as good as making a trade. Maybe so, but alone it’s just not enough.

Prove me wrong, AA. Prove me wrong. There’s a little over 8 hours left to make me eat my words…

    As a distraction…

Yesterday Drew Waters was 4-5 with 2 SB. Over the last 4 weeks, Waters has slashed .322/.366/.621 with 5 HR, 9 2B and a 3B. After a dismal June, the kid has caught fire and looks like the #2 prospect that he is. One has to wonder if AA might be dangling one of his 2 top OF prospects in some of these trade deadline talks. Oops, there I go drifting back to the trade deadline again.

Speaking of Cristian Pache, over his last 28 days he’s slashing .250/.333/.413, and that’s an improvement. We may be to the point where we either value him for his elite defense, or we trade him before his value dips. I don’t believe he’ll ever be more than mediocre at the plate. I hope he proves me wrong… well, I hope he proves me wrong unless he’s traded. 😉

I’m still dreaming that AA trades for a CF (Bryan Reynolds from PIT looks great) and paves the way for Waters in LF by mid-season 2022.

I’m hearing the Mets are eyeballing both Kris Bryant and… Javy Baez. Yes, that dynamic duo. Here’s what I have to say about that.

If the Mets swing such a deal, then you essentially have New England and SoCal snatching up all the big name talent. Yes, I know that Seattle, Tampa and Southside Chicago have made some noise. Toronto too (which is essentially the Canadian side of NY). But not big blockbuster noise. In reality, it’s just big market teams acting like big market teams. Except 1. Of those teams that have not declared themselves as sellers, the only top 10 market team that isn’t out buying is… yep, our hometown Atlanta Braves. We are the #7 sports market, but spend like a mid-market.

    So frustrating.

BTW, the Braves lead all of MLB in home attendance. Yes, in our cozy ballpark, we lead them all. 1st in attendance; 12th in payroll. Maybe if fans STOPPED going to games we might get someone’s attention. But why should ownership spend more on players when the fans are still coming out and throwing cash at them? I guess I’d hold the line too.

Byron IS a game changer, who was finally turning into that superstar , but has a terrible record with injuries (got hit on the wrist , sure can’t blame him for that)

    First impressions…

Sandoval needed to simply be released, and the Indians are covering Rosario’s $$. What’s not to like. He’s not the big bat we all wanted, but it can’t hurt. He’ll help our bench when he’s healthy.

Duvall is the very definition of “streaky”. He’s better than Almonte in LF. Alex Jackson did not have a future here. Again, what’s not to like?

We need to be honest… we’re shopping at the Dollar General while the usual suspects are at Saks. These moves make us marginally better. Not alot, but marginally better.

Bowman puts it this way: “Now the Braves also have Duvall back. They gained two outfielders by trading a pair of players who no longer had value within their organization”

Let me be clear, I’m not excited by either of these moves. And maybe there’s still another card to be played. But there is no reason to poo-poo them either.

I can sum it up this way: We’ve been routinely starting Guillermo Heredia and Abraham Almonte. Let that sink in a second.

and V, I think we are officially changing roles today , which is ok 😉

I actually like the 2 trades. Remember, while everyone and their brother only care about OBP, what wins games is having guys that , you know…can drive in runs….and Duvall has 68 RBI’s which , in my book, is very important. and Rosario was a 32 HR guy in 2019 (you were right, someone good in 2019! 😛 ) but also hit 27 in 2017, and 24 in 2018. and he’s only 29. Cleveland just basically had no offense this year, so I think it’s like Kris Bryant and Schwarber in 2020 in Chicago, when no one is hitting, everyone presses, and fails…

so, hopefully he won’t see the team score 1 run, after scoring 12 the night before…
Wonder why the Indians didn’t want Amonte, something back for Rosario????

I don’t hate these moves. And given what we all have been pretty much expecting, we’ve done pretty well. No one honestly expected a big name with a big price tag (both in dollars and in prospects) attached.

Duvall is a major improvement over Almonte both at the plate and in the field. When I saw that ball clank of Almonte’s glove yesterday, I just cringed. And Duvall will probably also hit either 5th or 6th, and not 7th or 8th. This moves Dansby back down where he’s a better fit in the lineup. It helps square things out.

Anything we get from Rosario is better than what we got from Panda. He had not gotten a hit since April. April. Even on the IL, Rosario is as productive as Panda has been since April.

That said, I do not labor under any illusion that these moves make us better than the Mets. It just makes us better.

Okay, Panda cleared space on the 40 man. Aren’t there a couple of spots already vacant? Hard to keep up these days.

Okay, while the Braves did not rock the trades today, they added a piece who could really help.

I do not expect Acuna to be back until the first of June at the earliest next season. Perhaps Liberty will loosen the purse strings next season and maybe the Ozuna, Pache, & Waters situation sorted out by then.

Job 1 is still to get over .500. Considering the fact the Braves have yet to break thru that glass ceiling, we should be thankful Alec is not blowing up the team like the Cubs and Nats.

I like Heredia, Almonte and Adrianza as bench players, just not all three in the line up together. I also like Arcia as part of the bench but again, not with them all in the line up.

I think Adrianza would be a good fit batting lead off and moving Pederson to the middle of the order.

I know the Braves would likely want to platoon DuVall but Pederson has hit well against bot lefties and righties so his playing everyday has been a plus.

Yes, opportunities lost. Situational hitting can win a lot of v\ball games. Remember when Andrew was “I’m a pull hitter” all or nothing which left so many runners stranded? I don’t like Ozzie leading off, he just does not have the temperament for it. Heredia would be a better option there IMHO.

I don’t like Ozzie leading off, he just does not have the temperament for it.

He also leads the team in RBI and needs to stay in a run producing role.

I think Joc will probably only sit out against an occasional lefty thus will be the primary leadoff guy. This lineup is much better now, and as constructed is full of HR power top to bottom. But it doesn’t have the traditional leadoff type. Then again, is there anything “traditional” about modern lineups? Not really. Chicks dig the longball, and so do GM’s. These days you pretty much want your best hitters at the top so that they get more opportunities to come to the plate. Not much strategy there but it’s difficult to argue the logic.

Do y’all realize half this lineup wasn’t even on the team as late as July 14? Joc, Duvey, Soler (the entire OF), and Vogt were on NOBODY’s radar 3 weeks ago… not to mention Eddie Rosario who could turn out to be the best of the bunch.

    What a weird season.

this team had been super lucky in regards to serious injuries , the last several years (well, outside of the rotation of course :/ ) then you add the Ozuna crap…. whole new outfield, catcher(s) …why am I saying this,we all know it 😉
But, I guess it was our turn….Honestly, should have given FF a rest Sunday, he’s the “old” guy who had played, what 9 games in 8 days, or whatever it was….and a tough lefty. Have to rest he and Austin, or at least take them out of the blowouts….or rest them for 6 innings, then have them pinch hit…
remember how dead Nick M, and FF were come playoff time that one year? I know, as soon as I say this, Jim Mora starts screaming, Playoffs??? PLAYOFFS?????

Welcome back RB, we have missed your banter, what is the good news from the Braves hunter lands… ?

Smyly was not exactly sharp tonight but he managed to get thru 4 before the Braves brought out the heavy lumber. What a difference a week makes. Solar, Pederson and DuVal all played big in tonight’s win. Now, time for the Bravos to cross the Rubicon and break into over 500 territory, forbidden fruit so far this season.

I look for Touki to return to form tomorrow night.

And based on their performance over the last 3 weeks or so, they are the most .500 team I’ve ever seen. The question now is if they’ve gotten enough better to move the bar a little higher. It’ll likely take at least 86-76 to win the division.

  149. 213 Gil in Mechanicsville August 5, 2021 at 10:39 am

Yes, but the best .500 club I have seen in a while. Anyone else remember the Braves team that went into September 13 1/2 games up only to blow it?

This team now has a different vibe about it. No longer how will the blow this one but again how are they going to pull this one out.

Chris Martin is still shaky as is Green but the rest of the pen appears to have found itself. The additions of Jesse Chavez and Rodriguez have totally changed the swag of the bullpen. A new confidence.

Now, if Touki can get back to Touki 2.9 we will break the .500 barrier and it will be off to the races.

Last night it was like a revelation to have DuVal and Soler contribute with dingers. Joc Peterson is playing like he wants to stay in Atlanta and it appears he hits leftys just fine to me. Soler has not shown to be a defensive liability either. Maybe these guys feel like they have something to prove.

I still don’t really like Ozzie in the lead off position but Adam Frazier was traded to the Padres so that is out.

I just don’t think your lead off guy should be always swinging at the fist pitch he sees. All said, the line up is certainly deeper now than it has been all season.

Let’s sweep the Cards and break that winning record glass ceiling all at the same time.
Still smilin’ though I can’t say it was Smyly necessarily that put it there.
It was having Duvall back and Soler in the line-up that did it more than anything.
Soler is a player I have coveted for a long time.
I hope he finds baseball religion in a Braves uni for years to come.
I thought by now the outfield I saw in the minors would be regulars in Atlanta.
That is Waters, Pache, and Acuna around the outfield.
Doesn’t look like that’s an imminent reality.
Maybe down the road a few seasons.
Is the re-born Toussiant in the stadium tonight?
Hope he doesn’t revert to a pumpkin.
I never thought he would ever figure out his control.

Yep, the road to Atlanta has become just a tad bit more pothole laden for the trio of Pache, Waters and Michaels hasn’t it? I don’t mind though, Soler will be a good replacement for Ozuna as a DH next season methinks.

As we have only seen him play in the outfield for about a week or so, perhaps we have yet to see his warts but so far he looks pretty solid. Maybe not as flashy as some but as the old saying goes: Consistent adequacy often out performs occasional excellence.

They did bring up one rookie. Sadly he couldn’t stick.

Waters is not as far along as is Pache. Well, Waters was not as far along as Pache was supposed to be. We need to remember that each of them are just 22 years old. But Pache signed in 2015 while Waters was taken in the 2017 draft. So theoretically even though they are the same age, Pache has a couple years extra pro experience and organizational development.

Pache’s timeline should have placed him Atlanta mid- to late-season this year with Ender finishing out the last year of his deal. But Ender’s total collapse caused the powers that be to lean on Pache a bit early. And as we all witnessed, he wasn’t ready. Waters on the other hand really is better targeted for mid- to late-season 2022.

Not sure who Michaels is..? But if you mean Michael Harris, he’s a relative baby at 20 and just now in high-A ball. (I suspect he could move up to AA by season’s end though. He seems to be handling A+ pitching just fine.) He’s gonna be a good one… probably the best bet of the three to make an impact. Waters has the tools, but needs to cut down on the strikeouts. But that’s what AAA ball is for, right?

Good morning all, at last the Braves have achieved lift-off … Time to soar now.

I felt a bit sorry for the Cardinals last night as I have witness the same level of melt down by the Braves pen earlier this season but not so sorry as to want it to stop. Wouldn’t you know it would end with Freddie hitting a seed to short right field where the 2nd baseman made a stellar grab.

Touki again showed he can still be a bit shaky finding the strike zone with regularity but he does have promise. If ever there was a good argument for employing a six man rotation, the current crew is it.

When I watch the Mets’ lead in the East shrink day by day, I cannot help but think of the old Satchel Paige line of “Don’t look back, something might be gaining on you”

The Marlins proved this week they can still be dangerous as long as they still have a bat in their hands.

Oh by the way, Austin Riley is a stud…. WOOF!

Couldn’t you almost see the Cards firing their manager? You bring in your closer, that I think has still not blown a save to start off his career(well, I’m wrong… he has blown a save now, not sure if it was last night, or earlier in the week) and leave him out there when he can’t throw a strike to save his life….I mean, he may never be the same again (Hope that’s not the case)
That being said, FF shoulda kept his bat on his shoulder 😉
to complain, just a bit….I think it was more because the cardinals are terrible, than Touki being “good” last night, that he got through 5+ innings….did anyone else notice his body language, and the almost complete lack of 4 seam fastballs? You can bank on it. Travis d’Arnaud has had no setbacks, in fact he delivered a walk-off RBI hit in game 2 of yesterday’s DH in Gwinnett. He’ll be back on Tuesday. I foresee Kevan Smith passing cleanly through waivers and being assigned to AAA.

One thing for sure, there is seldom a day that passes that the Braves don’t have some interesting news to pass along.

Yesterday’s game was a reminder that the Nationals may well be a better team now with their new additions. They were making a run when Schwaber went down with the ham string injury and they never recovered. I am going to root for them this week against the Mets who are in a serious free fall. Aug. 8: Reds 3, Pirates 2 — Wilson pounds zone
Bryse Wilson gave the Pirates the best start in their four-game series vs. the Reds, firing six innings with three runs allowed. Wilson said he’s at his best when his command is sharp, and on Sunday, it was. He struck out seven batters and did not issue an unintentional walk, marking the first time in his MLB career he’s had at least seven K’s without an unintentional base on balls.

A quality start for young Bryse

Wilson boosting Bucs out of the gate

Bryse Wilson gave the Bucs their best start of the weekend, going six innings while allowing three runs in the fourth — his only shaky inning of the game, which began with two hits off the end of the bat. He pounded the strike zone to match his career high of seven strikeouts while issuing his only walk intentionally.

“I think it speaks a little bit to the stuff,” Shelton said of Wilson’s ability to stay in the strike zone. “When you have stuff to be able to get guys out in the zone, it’s really important. He trusts that.”

In his team debut on Monday, Wilson went five innings with only one run allowed against the National League Central-leading Brewers. Not a bad beginning for one of the pieces acquired from the Braves in the Richard Rodríguez trade, one whom general manager Ben Cherington said could be “a strong part of” the Pirates’ rotation going forward.

“For me, I wanted to come in and put a stop on the lineup that was really hot, hitting a lot of homers on a lot of good pitches,” Wilson said. “It was cool to be able to do that and have two starting pitchers — I went six, he went seven — [in a] pitching duel.”

Sometimes all a kid needs is an opportunity to pitch where he can learn without too much pressure . I hope he becomes another Jason Smidt

Not 100% sure, but I think it may have been the over-sensitive Marlins announcer who immediately apologized on air for the fan’s “unacceptable” racial slur. What’s not even been reported is that the supposed target of the word didn’t even react to it… because it didn’t exist.

  182. 260 Vox O'Reasoñ August 11, 2021 at 9:16 am

I have been a big fan of Trea Turner since I saw him in person in a AAA game in Gwinnett. It was evident then that he is a special player. What would it take to bring him to Atlanta? That’s tricky as he has 1 more year of team control (last arb) before hitting FA in 2023. The Dodgers will certainly tender him that last arb and keep him in town, and since he’s not a Scott Boras client, there’s a chance he takes a fair extension if offered.

But… let’s just speculate for a minute and look at this a little deeper.

The Dodgers have an All-Star SS already in Corey Seager. Seager is a FA after this season. The Dodgers love to move players around, and Turner has played a little 2B alongside Seager. But the Dodgers could simply choose to go another year with Turner at SS in 2022 and let Seager walk in FA after 2021. It’s hard to say what they’re thinking out there as they love to stockpile talent and have an unlimited budget to make it happen.

I’ve always kind of lumped both Seager and Turner together, both being very similar players on opposite sides of the country until recently. Well, except for this. Did you know for his career, Turner has played 45 games in CF to go along with 44 at 2B? Meanwhile, Seager has played his entire pro career at SS.

    Now, the deep dive…

A published article in the last couple of days asserts that Alex was hard into the CF market at the deadline and came up short on players like the Pirates’ Bryan Reynolds, the O’s Cedric Mullens and ex-Marlin Starling Marte, forcing him to instead pile up corner OF’s. What does this say about his confidence in handing CF over to Cristian Pache long term? As unlikely as it may be, I’d love to have Turner in Atlanta in CF. And to be honest, I’d love to have Turner in Atlanta at SS… no disrespect to Dansby Swanson intended. But c’mon… Trea Turner?

    And if not Turner… Seager?

I know it’s a little early to be talking about 2022, but I find it fascinating that Alex was working hard to import a young CF. That speaks volumes. It also shows that the Front Office is in “win now” mode. Will he finally loosen the locks on the prospects and make some real substantive trades? I do not have much confidence he’ll be shopping in the premium aisle in FA.

Last comment before I return to work. I hope AJ Minter has worked something out. But history is not with him. He’s already 27-years-old with 5 years in and out of the ATL bullpen. He can be brilliant in spurts, but has yet to find any consistency. I’ve seen enough of Mike Foltynewicz and Sean Newcomb to be too optimistic that Minter can suddenly figure it out at age 27. And since he reaches Arb 1 this year, these last couple of months will likely determine his future as an Atlanta Brave.

I’m still baffled why Will Smith has gone from one of the best in MLB to cringe-worthy. But again, looking at history, I at least do have some hope that he could return to form. Unlike Minter, he has proven he can do it consistently. The same can be said for Chris Martin, who might be more baffling than Smith.

Speaking of return to form, Tyler Matzek has appeared to regain his 2021 form of late, and it’s a good thing. Hopefully whomever has been working with Matzek can turn their attention to Smith and Martin.

Where would the 2021 Braves bullpen be without Luke Jackson?

I love recent additions Jesse Chavez and Richard Rodriguez. Even Edgar Santana has had some good moments. This team finally has some depth in the pen and there should still be one more addition, even if it’s Huascar Ynoa or Touki Toussaint. After all, you might go for a 6 man rotation, but 7 is a bit much. 😀

AJ Minter might not want to get too comfortable.

I don’t know if I’ve just become old and crotchety (well, yes,..duh! 😉 ) but it was almost impossible for me to even enjoy the win! Hey Will Smith, did ya know that lefties like it low and inside? did ya know Joey Votto is like the hottest player in the NL? GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s kinda hard to enjoy a game you keep flipping away from….
Reds would be in first place in our division. But, you know why they aren’t in 1st place in their division. Yeah, the Brewers, but…they also gave up their longtime closer, to the Angels….Raisel Iglesias. But hey Reds fans, your billionaire owner saved 9 million this year!

Ok, after getting that off my chest….wait, one more point…they almost lost a game they were leading 5-0, and if they had, it would have been a terrible loss, and the kind of game we all would have remembered if they lost the division by one game. We are so lucky the whole division basically sucks…but, they did come back, and they are in 1st place…and that is great! Phils and Mets fans/players/coaches must be sweating a bit!

what has happened to the Mutts? They had the lead when they had an outfield full of rejects, now they can’t win? Guess it’s their rotation… doesn’t help to lose the best starter in baseball, does it?

Horrible clubhouse environment and no leadership. It’s an underrated part of building a team, and the Braves do that well. It’s why they can endure hardships but still hang around… and eventually emerge. Never underestimate the value of great leaders.

Quasi early game today. 5 PM, I don’t ever recall that time used for a game not part of a twin bill.

I was very disgusted when Will I Am gave up the homer in the ninth.

relief more than joy when Ozzie saved the Braves bacon.

The Mutts great run of being saved by their pitching staff came to an end when they hit the wall.

Believe it or not but the Braves are actually becoming part of the discussion in the wild card chase too. Just saying.

Way too much baseball left in the season to be throwing in the towel yet. If I were a Reds fan I would be pissed. Marge Shott was not a bad owner. Liberty Media… now that is a bad owner, nearly as much so as AOL/Time Warner…

Scanning the interwebs today I ran across a very interesting discussion on Will Smith.. and how it’s not his fault that hitters are suddenly teeing off on his pitches.

The theory behind the onslaught is actually pretty plausible: Will Smith is tipping his pitches. It has even been pretty specifically noted that he squares his shoulders to the plate before throwing the slider. I’ll have to pay attention to it next time he pitches, but if it’s true it explains a whole lot. You can be sure that if some baseball junkie picked up on it, major league scouts and batters have as well.

And that’s where the blame gets deflected…

It’s fairly accepted that over time pitchers can develop bad habits that get them on trouble. It’s why they can go through slumps. But it’s also fairly accepted that it’s his catcher’s job to pick up on such things. Ah, and there’s where the team is at fault… well sort of. Sort of not. Smith pitches only an inning at a time, and obviously not every night. And this season, he may not even have the same catcher twice in a week’s time. How is a catcher supposed to know his pitcher when he doesn’t se them consistently? Hard to place blame there. But I do think if the pitch tipping is a real thing that some of the blame has to fall on pitching coach Rick Kranitz. That has to be in his job description too, right?

Here’s what I do know. This theory seems quite valid to me. It explains alot. It explains why a top reliever is suddenly being lit up like a Christmas tree. And I would hope that if this theory is getting discussed heavily on internet forums and such, that it might just get back to someone on the team that can do something about it. Because it is correctible. And I’m glad it is… getting Smith straightened out could be a huge boost to this bullpen and team.

You know if it’s discussed here on the old B & S then the Braves brass is now aware of it and it will be fixed. Often a tell is only detected by the most astute observer.

Of course todays game showed the Reds could read the Braves staff like a book. YIKES!

Yep, Kyle Muller got beat up tonight. But it happens with young pitchers. But he repeated a trend I’ve noticed with a lot of our young pitchers lately. They can’t locate the fastball early and start overloading on breaking balls. That’ll get you killed in the big leagues.

He’s being optioned after tonight’s game, but it’s not a punishment for a bad game. It serves a couple purposes. First, he can go work on that fastball command that has escaped him of late. But more urgently, the team can add a bullpen arm to help a pen that had to cover too many innings tonight

Huascar Ynoa is slated to come up and take that next turn in the rotation. It’s good to have depth.

Dodgers down the Mutts in ten, The Reds continue their torrid hitting spree and the Braves did their own version of home run derby. 4 solo homers … whoop. Not without drama however with Will Smith in the 9th. He just annot make it easy closing out the game can he?

Sure looked like it in the first two of this nine-game road trip.
Looks like Lt. Dans is working toward that pot o’ gold at the end of the arb rainbow.
Riley has really taken to Chipper Jones’ tutelage.
I wish Jorge Soler would do the same.
Cut down a bit on that long swing, and move his hands down to shorten the timing.
Drew Smyly must want to stay a Brave.

This team will likely exchange Almonte for Rosserio when the later is healthy which should strengthen the team even more. Still, the games are not played on paper much to the chagrin of the sports analyses and betters. (Still think MLB crawling into bed with the bookies is a bad look.

Starting to get a bit of solid ground around 1st place.
    I like it.
Soler was a boost initially but has tailed off recently.
He’s probably not going to take to tutelage from Chip Jones very well.
Too long in the majors me thinks, but the guy’s plenty strong to shorten that swing and still barrel up pitches that need a flight attendant on them. (Bull Durham)
The add in the line-up that to my mind has been the difference maker is Adam Duvall.
He’s not dangerous for average, but if a mistake is made, he will take you over the fence.
Like the inside pitch he hammered last night.
Lt. Dans is seeing a lot better pitches because of it.
In my humble opinion of course.
Travis d’Arnaud’s return is a Godsend.
A real bat other than Heredia behind Duvall.
An eventuality we’re just beginning to reap the benefits of.
BTW, I see Heredia-Molina as a potential keeper unless this off-season brings an upgrade bat for the OF.
And the starting pitching has been more on target than not these past two weeks.
Wil Smith still makes me wish for Mark Melancon, but I digress.
    Later folks.

Great to see Ynoa back in action, and in a positive way.
Riley trying to keep pace with Duvall.
We could have already had a 30 homer guy, maybe 40 in Acuna
    We’ll never know now.
How many others will get 30 or more?
    Duvall
    Riley
    Freeman
    Dansby
    Albies
could have five guys with 30 or more.

I really, really hope they offer Duvall a nice one year contract. I don’t care that his OBP is not good. I’m old school enough to think 30 HR’s 100, 110 RBI’s and Gold Glove defense is actually a very good thing to have on your team.

MLB has updated their prospect rankings for 2021 following the recent draft. The new Braves Top 10 is not very surprising, although there is some movement both up and down for some familiar names. There are also some new ones. Lets take a look.

    OF Cristian Pache
    C Shae Langeliers
    OF Drew Waters
    OF Michael Harris
    LHP Kyle Muller
    RHP Ryan Cusick
    LHP Tucker Davidson
    IF Braden Shewmake
    LHP Jared Shuster
    RHP Spencer Strider

Observations… Pache is still the #1 guy despite his struggles to open the 2021 season. He simply was not ready. And he’s obviously still held in high regard. Waters dropped a notch, but only because Langeliers is having a monster season with the bat in AA. He should be moving up soon to see if the improvement translates to a higher level. Michael Harris continues to climb. This kid is special. He’s also 1 of 3 OF’s in the Top 10. I expect Alex to give up one of these gems in a trade this offseason. It will not be Harris. 2021 #1 draftee Ryan Cusick debuts at 6 while former teammate and 2020 #1 draft pick Shuster also moves in at 9. Both are for real, but Cusick was a steal at the end of Round 1. Both big lefties Muller and Tuck remain, and both will contribute to the big club in 2022, assuming Tuck is healthy. Muller will likely return in 2021. Shewmake dropped a couple of slots, but not due to his own performance but more because others simply passed him. He’s a solid fundamental “high floor” player that will probably become the team’s utility guy as early as 2022, although 2023. is more likely. Sneaking in at 10 is the guy we should all keep our collective eyes on. Spencer Strider has moved quickly, starting this season at A+, and moving up to AA a few weeks ago. While he hasn’t exerted the same dominance at AA, he’s still shown the same good swing-and-miss stuff that continues to rack up K’s. He’s special and will form part of the next nucleus along with the aforementioned Cusick and Shuster.

Other guys to note that didn’t make the Top 10 (yet) are P’s Bryce Elder and Joey Estes. Elder is a fast riser and is being aggressively moved through the system starting the year at A+, moving up quickly to AA, and getting the bump to AAA last week. Estes is just 19, but recently pitched a 9 IP complete game with 14 K’s on just 106 pitches. He was a 16th round pick. Kudos to the scout that found him.

The biggest notable absence has to be C William Contreras, but it would seem that he exhausted his prospect status with 44 games in ATL earlier this year (48 total)? Or maybe he was simply exposed in his tenure in a big league lineup. He can’t hit a slider, and his defense was awful. That’ll do it. Still, he’s not on the list anywhere 1-30. Surely he didn’t fall that far, did he?

Phillies lose this afternoon to the D’backs 6-2. That puts another 1/2 game between them and the Braves.

Like i said, I hate going into a series with a team on a long losing streak. The law of averages looms large in the background.

So, 2 of 3 will be fine with me. Sure, I would love another sweep but somewhere along the line, Smith will blow another one.

Then it is back to Atlanta for 2 with the Yankees and 3 with the Giants. Realistically, going 3 of 5 for the home stand would be a good showing.

Then it’s off to the left coast for a bunch of sleep deprivation for me.

The O’s getting closer to a possible steak ending win. Lost by two on Friday night, lost by one on Saturday. One run is the closest they have been in a final score since they began their current losing streak.

That said, the Braves go for the three city sweep today. Yes, the Yankees loom large but for the Yankees, the Braves loom large also. So, Braves, stay focused and win today.

Been a pretty eventful week for Travis. Signs a 2/3 year deal with Atlanta, hits a 2 run homer and now headed home on paternity leave.

Saying that, several of the Braves homers hit in Baltimore would not have left the park in Atlanta but as long as the dimensions are the same for both sides I’m good with it.

Looks like Ynoa gets the nod Monday night followed by Charlie on Tuesday. Let’s hope the Braves have a big enough lead where Will Smith will not be relevant.

2 game series just left a bad taste in my mouth (and others I’m sure) Snit brought in guys that should not have been facing the hottest team in baseball in game one. Game 2, terrible strike zone, terrible call saying Joc was swinging at a pitch that hit his hand and fell down, slightly turning as falling. Oddly, Snit did not defend Joc, said it looked like he swung, but defended Riley getting thrown out a 2nd, all but killing a rally in the 8th. Then, F.F. getting called out, when he likely was safe, AND the catcher was blocking the plate! Guarantee Aaron bleeping Boone tells his catchers to be on the line, and the infielders to throw to the outside of the line. Just total b.s. Feel like I am forgetting other crud….
oh well, like Chip and Jeff were saying, still have won 9 of 11 games and the Phils and Mutts lost….but, I do fear that teams like the Yankees can go deeper in the playoffs than the braves, cuz they have a ton of guys throwing 97 to 101 and the braves have basically 2 guys and they don’t close. If Chris Martin didn’t give up a homer to a guy hitting .214….perhaps ….shoot…
Ok, trying to end on a positive note. Since Snit seems to want a repeat of the year FF and Nick M, after playing 162 games, were all but useless come playoff time , having 2 days off in a row should do what he won’t , give them a real rest…

Okay guys, what do you think? September 1st the Braves will be able to expand their roster by two players. I expect it to be Eddie Rossario and Christian Pache because they are already on the 40 man. That said, the Braves could bring up Rossario now and send down Almonte. They already have 14 pitchers on the roster.

Then there is Ian Anderson… do they swap out Touki or do they send down Tomlin or a position player?

The case can be made that Josh has a “tired “arm… based on his recent performances.

I believe the logic of trimming the September roster was twofold:

One, teams in contention were using it for unlimited relief options. Two, teams not in contention were deploying AAA rosters to play against teams fighting for playoff spots. “Integrity of the game” came into play under both scenarios.

That said, the Braves could bring up Rosario now and send down Almonte. They already have 14 pitchers on the roster… Then there is Ian Anderson… do they swap out Touki or do they send down Tomlin or a position player?

    OK, since you asked… here’s my take…

First, Eddie Rosario is healthy, but he’s not exactly chewing up AAA pitching. In 13 games at Gwinnett, he’s slashing just .196/.226/.471. I think in his case, patience is a virtue. I’d wait another 4 days and just bring him up on Sept. 1. That part isn’t very difficult. As for the second player, a case could be made for Cristian Pache. He does look like he may be much closer to finishing his development than he was when he was rushed to the roster on Opening Day. But a better case might be made for Orlando Arcia. As Ber noted, there is a wealth of OF possibilities, but really only one IF, being Erihe Adrianza. And he really is only a stopgap SS, and not someone you’d want out there if anything happened to Dans. If there’s anything the Atlanta Braves franchise ought to know, it’s that “defense up the middle” should be a priority. Don’t bet against Arcia being tabbed.

Now… pitching. That’s a much tougher question. Ian appears to be ready to return to face the Giants on Sunday. While all indication should be that Josh Tomlin’s time here has drawn to an end, you just never know around here. Alex has shown a propensity to stockpile arms, even those that aren’t firing at 100%. He might lean more toward sending someone down that has a minor league option rather than expose a veteran to waivers. That said, I think there’s zero chance Tomlin would be claimed. There’s also the possibility of placing him on the IL with a “shoulder strain”. That would delay any real decision and keep more options open for at least 10 more days. But assuming that Tomlin is the odd man out, who becomes the long man in the pen? There’s not another candidate on the roster presently unless you extract someone from the current rotation. But I’m getting ahead of myself. I’ll come back to this option in a minute.

Secondarily, what happens with the rotation when Ian comes back? There are some certainties in the group. You know that Charlie, Max, Ian and Drew Smyly will be there. And for those who cringe when I say Smyly, go back and look at his numbers over his last 12 starts. The Braves have won 11 of those games. That said, he doesn’t seem to last more than 4 innings… which I’ll come back to in a minute.

Who’s left? Touki Toussaint… whom many speculate will move into the bullpen in Tomlin’s role. Would AA do that? Here’s a kid with great expectations, that’s finally getting things figured out in regular starts. To stop that process and move him to the mop-up role could be damaging to his development… not to mention taking a talented arm and parking it away from competitive games. That just does not seem like the best use of our resources.

I’ve heard alot of talk about a 6 man rotation, to help keep arms fresher going into September and October. And that does sound reasonable. But professional starting pitchers are on strict routines for a reason. And disrupting that could be detrimental to their recovery and performance cycle – a cycle they’ve been working under for their professional careers. I don’t think it’s as simple as just adding a 6th man. There’s more to it. Plus, I want to squeeze every start I can out of Charlie and Max. They’re my hosses and the 2 guys other teams want to avoid.

Now… circling back to a couple of points I left hanging earlier, and how I would handle it if it were me in the big fancy executive suite. Smyly has been solid for about 4 inning consistently, but really isn’t giving us Likewise, Touki is averaging a little over 5 IP per start himself. Why not piggyback these 2 guys? Have Smyly ready to go 4, and have Touki ready to come on in the 5th? If you can get a solid 4 out of him as well, you ideally only have to tax one additional arm in the pen… if that.

Now that I’ve typed a feature length reply, we’ll most likely witness the Braves do something completely different from all of that above. But from an admittedly amateur point of view, I’d go the routes I’ve described above.

I was basing my opine on Rosario’s performance on his last five starts. However, holding him in Gwinnett another 4 days won’t hurt him.

I agree Arcia is just the type of vet you would want to add for a stretch run.

As for pitching, this is the mean season. When young arms fall off from venturing into uncharted territory.

Of course those innings pitched in the minors count too in my opinion. It6 is good to have pitching depth, just ask the Padres who don’t…

Philly and New York both lost last night. Time for the Braves to drive a stake thru their collective hearts.

You know, Gil… you may have swayed me here.

If right now against the Giants Rosario is a better option than Almonte, then bring him on up. Almonte is out of options, so you know he’s got to go through waivers. But I imagine that was part of the discussion when Rosario was traded for anyway. Since defense should be a priority, Pache may be a better OF option than Almonte anyway. I’m not opposed to it.

Almonte is a career quad A player, if another club wants to pick him up, well good for him. He is 1 for 16 in his last ten appearances.

Does Rosario bring more to the table than either he or Peterson? Probably. Should be an interesting stretch run.

Bowman weighs in on our conversation… sort of…

On the rotation: “With [Ian] Anderson set to make his return on Sunday or Monday, it’s likely the Braves will temporarily go with a six-man rotation that allows each of their starters to get an extra day over the next week. Once the next off-day arrives on Sept. 6, they may go back to five starters. But without an off-day next week, they’ll likely go with six starters.”

That would buy another week or so and plays into the prevailing school of thought that “these things tend to sort themselves out” with regard to starting pitching. And ya know what? They often do.

On Eddie Rosario: “You will likely see Rosario activated from the injured list during this weekend’s series against the Giants. Exactly what the counter move will be is not known. But Rosario’s left-handed power should strengthen the bench over the season’s final five weeks.”

I do think that Abraham Almonte is the likely “odd man out”. But I’d prefer they send down a reliever for a few days and flesh out a full 5-man bench until rosters expand and they can expand the bullpen again. I just don’t see that happening though. The track record suggests otherwise.

Reflecting back on this weekend, mostly on the return of Ian and the seemingly 9 lives of Josh Tomlin…

First, Ian Anderson may be the real key to this team’s success in the playoffs. You know you have a playoff bulldog in Charlie Morton, and you know you have a pitcher in Max Fried that can carve up a batting order like pastrami when he’s on. If Ian can be healthy and up to his potential, as he appeared to be yesterday, that’s a pretty stout 1-2-3 that can pitch with the best teams. That’s huge in the playoffs.

Now Tomlin. As much as we know from observation, and I think we’re a pretty astute bunch, we still don’t see or know the things that go on outside of the 3-hour televised event. I’ve read more than a few times about the way that Tomlin works with our young pitchers on everything from mechanics to mental approach. In all likelihood, Tomlin’s greatest value to this team comes outside the white lines. He just happens to be the guy that gets called on when things have gone sour between the lines. I expect him to quickly hire on as a coach once his pitching days are over. And only Tomlin can know when he’s ready to make that call. Perhaps the Braves are simply being patient with him in order to keep him around our youngsters until he can be hired in a more official coaching capacity. It’s plausible, anyway. He’s 36 and only signed through the end of 2021… with the team holding an option on 2022.

Can’t leave without giving praise to Eddie Rosario. I think AA found a gem there. Hard to believe he got him for practically nothing. If AA doesn’t get some kind of award for the job he did at the deadline, it’ll only be because some schmuck in big markets NY or Cali gets it instead.

Yep… and Eddie Rosario.. The Braves got him PLUS CASH from the Indians for the Panda who they immediately released. Talk about picking someone’s pocket… Shades of the Shelby Miller trade to Arizona…

Of course it should be interesting to see how Snit employs his outfield going forward. What a great problem to have eh? I’m thinking the Braves clubhouse might just more fun right now that a frat house on toga night…

Next season should be interesting as to who stays and who goes. Yes, Ozuna won’t be returning methinks regardless of the outcome of MLB’s investigation but I doubt Acuna will be ready before June of 2022.

As for right now, I expect Heredia will be searching for playing time and at bats. Rosario has speed and an above average glove to go with his stick.

I remember the 411 on Solar was he was a below average outfielder but I have not seen it so far.

I read somewhere, I’m sure at the time of the trade, that Rosario has the highest defensive metrics of any current Braves outfielder, not counting the injured RAJ of course. Since I’m not a stat-head no of those metrics meant anything to me. But the bottom line of the conversation is that Rosario is supposedly a better defensive OF, including CF, than Joc Pederson, Adam Duvall, and even Guillermo Heredia. If I had to guess, I’d expect to see him in a loose platoon with Duvall in LF… in much the same arrangement as Heredia/Pederson in CF. Ad at the same time, there will be days when one of Pederson/Rosario gets a start in RF over Soler just because. But I don’t know how you take any of them out of the lineup right now. They’re all hotter than the sun. And Heredia is a breath of fresh air off the bench. It’s amazing how many facets of a team can be improved with a few surgically precise acquisitions.

Yep, its like when one player gets hot and carries a team for a month and then inevitably cool off, it’s nice when your line up is 8 or 9 deep in the batting order. There is no rest for an opposing pitcher because everyone they face can turn a game around with one swing.

The only weak link right now in the line up is Voit and whichever pitcher is on the mound. Sure, there will be nights like last Saturday when you get shutdown but many more like Sunday when everyone rakes.

I am not going to worry too much about next season yet, too much baseball ahead of us for 2021 still. I’ll leave it to the pros in the front office to figure it all out but gee, how much deeper could this team be if not shackled by the tight wad owners at Liberty Media?

I would feel a lot better if the Braves and Freddie were to get a deal done before allowing Fab 5 to hit free agency.

On another front, I said I would be satisfied if the Braves played .500 ball during the last homestand. 2-3 is pretty close and actually if not for another missed call at home plate by the replay crew in New York could have been 3-2. Now a tough road trip to the left coast but lets be truthful, it will be a tough row to hoe for the Dodgers and the Rockies too.

I don’t expect another seven game winning streak but coming home 5 and 2 is very doable.

The Braves will have a lot of ground to cover in Dodger stadium and Coor’s Field so allowing to have some speed in the outfield will benefit the Braves pitchers.

One last word: Anyone think someone should remind the Mets Baez of what happened to David Justice (who was a much better player) when he dumped on the home teams fan base? Methinks Javier may have screwed the pooch so to speak and his chances of remaining in New York is about as good as the proverbial snowball in a hot place.

Speaking of the Braves playing .500 ball…

Let’s say the Braves go a very pedestrian 17-16 over the season’s final 33 games. Should that happen, they’d finish the season 87- 75. In order for the 2nd place Phillies to catch them, said Phils would have to win 21 of their remaining 32 games. Does anyone really see the Phillies, who just lost JT Realmuto for a few days and Rhys Hoskins for the remainder of the season, going 21-11 down the stretch?

    No.

I also don’t think the Braves will coast in with a 17-16 showing. But even of they did… it sure looks like it’d take a major hot streak by Philly to prevent a 4th consecutive division title.

Oh, and the Mets? They’d have to go 24-8. Yeah… r-i-g-h-t…

He’s starting to shorten up a bit on that long swing, and moved his hands down slightly for a quicker strike at the ball.
    Rosario chimed in right away.
Duvall is not good off the bench however.
I don’t recall him ever being.
Lot of work to do after season’s end to replace Ozuna’s bat.
Duvall to be the DH when the NL puts it in next spring ’cause i don’t want a platoon of Rosario and Duvall.

Duvall to be the DH when the NL puts it in next spring ’cause i don’t want a platoon of Rosario and Duvall.

It’s a possibility that neither are here in 2022. The current OF (excluding the inured RAJ) is not under team control next season. Soler and Rosario are both FA’s, Duvall and Pederson both have mutual options.

We will have Guillermo Heredia (Arb 2) assuming he’s tendered an offer. 😉

Oh… I suppose you have to consider that Marcell Ozuna is “under contract”, but there’s no clarity on how that will be considered. The criminal charges have been dropped; but the two misdemeanor domestic violence charges — family violence and simple assault — are still moving forward. Final motions are due today actually, and the hearing is scheduled for Sept. 9. MLB’s investigation is still “ongoing” and won’t conclude until after the charges have been resolved. Once the judicial side is concluded, a suspension by the league will surely follow. Then the ball will be in the Braves court.

Personally I don’t know how the Braves could bring him back. Their past handling of Hector Olivera would indicate the same. John Coppolella traded the embattled Cuban to San Diego for Matt Kemp’s contract. Well, Kemp came along too. But the contract was the penalty. Current GM Alex A’s first deal in Atlanta was to dump Kemp to LAD. Alex has proven to be a magician when it comes to making trades, but handling Marcell Ozuna, and the remaining 3 years of his deal will be akin to David Copperfield making a Lear Jet disappear. He’ll need a might big sleeve to pull that trick out of.

    But I digress. Next year’s OF…

Ronnie will return, but surely not by Opening Day. It’ll cost the team $10M and $7M respectively to keep Pederson and Duvall around… assuming each agrees to their side of the option. And there will be other teams in the game willing to bid for their services. We all need to be keeping our fingers crossed that Cristian Pache is ready to compete at the ML level in 2022. Aside from that, Alex will be shaking the bushes for some discount productivity to flesh his OF out again. After all, even if he makes Ozuna go away, there will be a lingering cost in some manner. That $18M annual albatross will not just vanish. And I doubt Liberty Media is willing to just sweep it under their corporate rug.

Duval has never really done well as a pinch hitter, is DH much removed from that? Also, he is a pretty good outfielder.

I think a lot will hinge on whether or not the Braves and Freddie can come to terms. AA should have expended him last spring. Teams like the Angles, Yankees, Red Sox etc will woo him hard if he opts to go to free agency.

He’s given up seven homers in his past two starts, one against a loaded lineup Monday and the other last week against Baltimore, the worst team in the majors. Of his past 16 runs allowed, 13 have come on homers.

“I mean, those balls were middle,” Smyly said of the first three homers Monday. “Granted, they’re in the zone. But they just came out really aggressive. It’s like, it’s hard to analyze it because they barely put my off-speed pitch in play. I really didn’t throw many fastballs after the second or third inning because I realized every fastball I threw, they were on.

Obviously at this stage of the season there is no means of acquiring help for the back end of this consistently inconsistent bullpen, but I read something from a fairly well known fan site earlier today that made me go “Hmmm…”

The writer was bemoaning the fact that this bullpen has seemingly plagued the Braves the entirety of the season. He noted that the pen simply did not have any hard throwing power arms capable of missing bats with the possible exception of AJ Minter, whom he referred to as the only actually closer type on the team, but also whom cannot seem to get out of his own way. And when you really look at the arms collected in the bullpen, you see that’s he’s right. And while it’s true that there are a handful of closers that found success throwing off-speed stuff, Trevor Hoffman immediately comes to mind, it’s a rare hurler that can consistently get outs without the high-90’s heater. That’s why Hoffman is in the HOF, right? But his fellow closer HOFers are more along the Goose Gossage, Lee Smith and Mariano Rivera ilk.

The Braves don’t have any of those at their disposal… or do they?

What if we had a big lefty that could consistently hit 97 with sink which could tick up higher in short spurts? A guy that can also mix in a quality curve, slider or change from time to time to keep batters honest? A guy that is capable of missing bats and racking up K’s?

What If I told you that Tucker Davidson is healthy and throwing again? He began “baseball activities” about 2 weeks ago after spending much of the season on the IL with “forearm inflammation”. I see no reason the Braves could not work him back as a short inning reliever for the remainder of the season. Even if they still view him long term as a starter, there’s not enough time left in the AAA season to build his innings up and no place for him in Atlanta to start anyway. It’s much or reasonable to use that talent out of the pen.

    Why not?

On the Braves lack of a true closer. Could Tucker be any worse than the guys we have filling those spots right now? Two very winnable games wasted….

So Martin goes on the IL with elbow inflammation. It’s speculated that the elbow has been bothering him for a while, which would explain the recent nosedive. But if that’s the case, it’s almost worse. He clearly hurt the team trying to stick around when he knew he wasn’t healthy.

Gotta give the bullpen props on this night. Jacob Webb did a great job, as did steady Luke Jackson, who has probably been our most reliable reliever all season. I don’t mean to gloss over Jesse Chavez or Richard Rodriguez, but you pretty much expect what you got from them.

Now Will Smith. We (and by we, I point the finger squarely at myself) have piled on Smith pretty hard this season. I do NOT think he’s an ideal closer. But he just became just the 4th closer in Braves’ history to notch 30 saves, and the first since Craig Kimbrel. The others are Billy Wagner and John Smoltz. That’s not bad company.

Of course, Freddie’s extension has to come first and foremost. Bringing Charlie Morton back for another season ought to be on the menu as well. It’s a pretty good place to be when your “To Do” list includes keeping alot of your current players.

But as potent as this offense right now, can you imagine it with a healthy Ronnie Acuña at the top of it?

    RAJ, RF
    Soler, DH
    Freddie, 1B
    Riley, 3B
    Ozzie, 2B
    Duvall, LF
    Dans, SS
    T’dA, C
    Pache/Heredia, CF

That’s a pretty stout lineup, folks, and not out of reach.

I read somewhere that MLB is considering suspending Trevor Bauer for two years which would let LA off the hook. If that is so, I would imagine the same sort of thing would happen to Ozuna. Again, allows the team to move on to other options.

I might add Bauer’s suspension is in spite of no legal convictions.

On Touki’s latest outing… Not like he was fooling a lot of folks in the first two innings, double plays being turned behind him bailed him out. The third inning he was still getting ground balls but they were finding holes. Then the errant throw to 2nd which loaded the bases really shook him up it appeared.

He is still young and it is the mental side of the game which needs shoring up for him IMHO…

I thought the Braves missed an opportunity to pick up just released Brad Hand but the Mets snatched him off the waiver wire so I doubt the Los Bravos could have got him even if serious about it. Mets would have the right of first refusal due to the standings.

Another righty on the mound tonight for the Rockies. I expect Ozzie to be back tonight. Watching last night’s game, I thought Rosario leading off was a good fit. I would like to see Ozzie moved down in the line up to hit fifth or sixth. I think he is a lot more comfortable where his free swinging style plays better. Sorry, but lead-off just appears to cramp his style so to speak.

      No, I agree with Gil.
The kids are growing up, and these are the usual growing pains.
We should have a solid SP rotation by 2025.
Fried, Anderson, Toussaint, Muller and a one-year FA like Morton in 2025.
      Please, no more Smyly’s. I ain’t smilin’.
and by then Minter should be over his shakedown cruise, and be solid while Tomlin is a pitching instructor for the staff.
Of course, Freeman will be on the way out if he isn’t already, (signing), but Lt. Dans, Riley, Contreras (signing), and RAJ,, Ozzie (another extension) will still be in the house………hopefully.
Waters and Pache seem to be fading into the mist, when I thought by 2025 we’d have an All-Star at three OF slots.
      Wishful thinking.
Rosario as the sub for RAJ for the balance of this season is the why of him being here in the first place.
I think they had him late in the order while he got his feet wet.
At least, that was my thinking when he arrived, and now as well.

“The Braves signed third baseman Maikel Franco last week” I’ll take things that make you go hummm??? Alec…

A day off for the good guys today. Allows me to reset my biorhythms methinks.

Tough road trip for the Braves last week. Missed opportunities which only reinforce the fact a team has to be consistent plus have a bit of luck on their side.

Huge crowd in DC yesterday, there must have been hundreds in the stands. Goes to show scoring runs is only part of the equation. You must be able to hold the other team’s bats at bay as well.

I hope young Ian watched Charlie’s masterful performance yesterday and took notes. A good lively fastball is still the best weapon in your arsenal.

Throwing a 101mph straight arrow allows elite hitters to bash the ball a long way. Says Austin Riley…

As to the Maikel Franco signing… purely a depth move. If you think about it, who is the backup to MVP candidate Austin Riley on the hot corner? Ehire Adrianza? Orlando Arcia? Johan Camargo? There really isn’t a pure 3B option behind him with the possible exception of Camargo, who has clearly fallen from favor in the organization. I would not want to lose Riley for any length of time, but having Franco stashed at least gives the team an emergency option.

Evidently Liberty Media gave AA the green light to begin next year’s construct now.
    d’Arnaud to ’23
Morton in ’22 with the option for ’23
Duvall with mutual option for next year
Rodriguez in the house for two more.
Albies (’27 inc 2 exts) and Acuna (’28 inc 2 exts) both Braves for a long time.
Would love for Soler to stay a Brave.
He’s been a fav of mine since Cubs days.
Maikel Franco for depth on a make-good minors contract for ’22.
Adrianza or Arcia will probably not be back with this move if successful.
I guess one of Rosario or Pederson for next year as well.
With Pederson under contract, Rosario could be a three month rental.
Pederson behind Soler in RF would be nice for ’22.
Lt. Dans still playing for that money contract @ Arb 3.
And the big kaihuna, Freeman’s new deal.
Heredia still in Arb in ’22 so he probably returns.
Lucky us, we still have Wil Smith for next year.
Oh, and Chris Martin, but no Shane Greene or Mark Melancon.
In Greene’s case great, but in Melancon’s Que lastima!
    Chavez deserves a new deal.
Don’t see Ozuna in our future.

Speaking of Marcell Ozuna, his court date is coming up in 2 days. Perhaps more will be known after that. If I had to guess, I’d look for some sort of plea deal that will involve “time served” and a favorable amount of money given to some official’s favorite charity. Of course, Ozuna will then have to deal with the highly public and politically correct MLB and their image conscious disciplinary arm. If I’m Ozuna’s camp, I fear that part more than the judicial part. Sadly for the Braves, the impending suspension will have to have an end eventually, and a still sizable portion of Marcell’s salary will still be owed. I don’t see any way around it.

I am pretty sure there is a “morals” clause in Ozuna’s contract as there is in most big contracts. Like a prenup that excludes infidelity. The other possibility is insurance. I do know it is pretty common for every big contract to have some sort of insurance to protect their investment. It would not pay 100% but would defer a major hit. These are things we will never be privy to but they do exist.

MLB union will do everything they can to assist the player and who knows what MLB officials do because it is Atlanta and we have seen the bias in dealing with the Atlanta franchise over the past 50 years.

That said, I’ll worry about it tomorrow. The Braves need to take care of business against the Nats who have shown the have the ability to sneak up and bite opponents in the butt. My advice is to walk Juan Soto every time he appears, don’t even bother to allow him to pick up a bat. Tell him to not pass go, just head directly from the dugout to first.

The only other guy who hurts Atlanta on a routine basis is Ryan Zimmerman (who has long been my favorite Nat) A solid guy and a Braves killer of some repute. I don’t think the Braves will have to face Gray during this series so if they can put up about 10 runs a game they should be good. The Nats gutted their team at the deadline but got some decent prospects in return but they are unproven. Their bullpen blows worse than the Brave’s did in April and May so there is that.

hey gang….the HOF ceremonies are at 11 am today. I’m sure it’s going to be ALL about Derek Jeter, but there are a few other folks going in, including my boy Ted Simmons! One of the best offensive catchers ever(especially without Steroids, or HGH in his bloodstream)…I do recall reading he smoked during much if not all of his playing career, which makes catching 150+ games several years, on lava hot astroturf…all the more amazing. Man, 30+ years after retiring, and seemingly all but forgotten….had to wait an extra year even.

well, so far can’t find what Glavine said about Simmons that helped him, but found this nice article, with others giving him high praise (every story I saw this morning was all about how long he had to wait, nothing about his game) Simmons’ teammates often speak of him in the same context. After all, among all players to catch at least 1,700 games since World War II, he ranks second only to Johnny Bench in OPS+. I forget what OPS…+ means, but I think it’s good 😉

For what’s it’s worth, I thought Will Smith’s ball to Juan Soto’s ribs was petty. I thought Dave Martinez’s response was… appropriate, although not executed very well. 88 to the butt on pitch #1 to Freddie would have been about right. Behind the head was not. And that miss should have been it. The next fastball in the pants was uncalled for. They had their opportunity on pitch 1 and clunked it.

I also thought Freddie handled it well. He appeared to understand somewhat given the way he went straight to Soto to chat. But he also appeared to dislike the method given the way he went over to talk to Martinez. Now it should be done… finished. All the balls have been deployed and the words have been spoken. Smith didn’t get in last night’s game, so he didn’t get in the rhetoric either. But tonight..? I believe it’s over from Freddie’s perspective and most likely from Snit’s perspective as well. But Smith has shown his pettiness already. Will it make a repeat appearance?

Honestly, I’m over Smith anyway, even if he is among the league leaders in saves. He’s certainly in no position from a performance standpoint to go out and dispense some long held “justice” for personal reasons. He hurt the team last night and could have gotten a real star injured in his wake. Smith needs a big dose of humility and just needs to go out and do his job without all the side drama. He has yet to do a great job without the extra. So William, if Freddie didn’t tell you this last night – and he probably did in private – just shut up and go out and do your job. We don’t want anything else from you.

Yep. baseballs hurt… been hit by a few myself but I was a big target.

Getting hit in the ribs is much more serious than getting plunked in the glute but Will’s aim has not exactly been précised this season so there is that.

What is the chance they get the game in tonight? I see where the tropical storm hit the Florida panhandle.

I mercifully feel asleep after Soto hit a go ahead homerun last night. I take it Snit did not heed my advice to not pitch to him…. Why do people insist on allowing the one guy who can beat you to do so?

    MLBTR:

Marcell Ozuna To Enter Domestic Violence Intervention Program

Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna, who remains on administrative leave under MLB’s domestic violence policy while legal proceedings play out, agreed to a negotiated resolution that will see him enter a domestic violence intervention program, Shaddi Abusaid of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Ozuna will be under six months of supervision, will participate in a 24-week family violence intervention program, will complete 200 or more hours of community service and will be required to go through anger-management counseling as well as a psychological evaluation as part of the agreement. It’s possible that the supervision period could be shortened to three months, if Ozuna meets all other requirements.

Felony charges against Ozuna were dropped in early August, but prosecutors still brought forth a pair of misdemeanor charges: family violence battery and simple assault. Both carried a potential sentence of up to one year of jail time. Now, should Ozuna complete the diversion program and the other measures agreed upon in today’s negotiated resolution, all criminal charges against him could be dropped. His next court date is set for Jan. 13.

Ozuna, 30, was arrested in late May after police responded to a domestic disturbance. Court filings at the time indicated that the responding officers saw Ozuna place his hands around his wife’s neck, throw her against a wall and strike her with the cast that was on his hand. (Ozuna had recently dislocated two fingers during a game.) Sandy Springs police sergeant Sal Ortega confirmed the witnessing of those events in an emailed statement, per Abusaid’s report.

Even if criminal charges against Ozuna are ultimately dropped, he could still face a suspension from Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred’s office. The league is currently performing its own investigation, and there are numerous instances of suspensions under the domestic violence policy even in the absence of criminal charges.

Ozuna appeared in 48 games for the Braves this season. He’s in the first season of a four-year, $65MM contract signed as a free agent this past winter but would not be paid during a suspension under the league’s domestic violence policy.

So his status will remain unchanged at least until his next court date on January 3, 2022. Once the judiciary is done with him, he’ll still face disciplinary action from MLB… most likely in the form of a lengthy suspension that could begin as early as the beginning of the 2022 season. How long a suspension is unknown, but it probably will not be just a slap on the wrist. (Hmmm, maybe a poor choice of words in this context, I admit.) Anyway, it’s all still speculation, but the longer it plays out, the more of his contract goes unpaid before Alex A and Braves prez Derek Schiller have to decide what to do with Ozuna the player.

A more detail from the AJC:

Ozuna appeared in court virtually Thursday morning and agreed to enter into the negotiated resolution. The conditions require the Major League Baseball star to be placed on six months of supervision, undergo a 24-week family violence intervention program and complete at least 200 hours of community service, Fulton County Deputy District Attorney Simone Hylton told the court. Ozuna is also required to take an anger management course and undergo a psychological evaluation.

If he completes those requirements early, Ozuna’s supervision could be terminated after three months, Hylton said, adding that he must refrain from illegal drug use and is not allowed to have any violent contact with his wife, Genesis.

Should he successfully complete his pre-trial diversion, Ozuna’s criminal charges would be dropped.

“Hopefully once it’s completed, I won’t see you again,” Fulton County Magistrate Judge Brandy Brooks told Ozuna over the Zoom call.

[Ozuna’s attorney Michael] LaScala said he negotiated extensively with the district attorney’s office and is pleased Ozuna’s charges will be dropped, calling it “a fair resolution for both the state and my client.”

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has reported that MLB is also investigating the incident, though nothing has been announced regarding Ozuna’s status.

LaScala said he’s hopeful Ozuna will be allowed to return to the field soon since he didn’t plead guilty and hasn’t been convicted of a crime.

“Ultimately, it will be up to Major League Baseball. We’re optimistic that the MLB will take a look at this,” he said. “I hope to see him in a Braves uniform again soon.”

there is some goofy fb braves group (is there any other kind? 😉 ) and several people there were griping about Joc not catching the ball…which is ridiculous , how about blaming our “closer” Smith giving up a 400+ screamer???? So glad Snit walked Soto (V, meant to say I agreed with you over Smith hitting him. Soto is a terrible hotdog, but just get him out closer, oh wait, Smith can’t do that).
Really don’t think this team has a chance with him closing in playoff games, unless he has a 3 or 4 run lead when he comes in….
Anyway, love that Joc got the game winning hit.( was thinking after braves blew, yet again, bases loaded no out inning, figured the braves were going to lose to a team with 2 established hitters)
Love that he went to left (which he did when he first came over, and was really tearing the cover off the ball, for a few games at least)
So sorry about Vogt’s injury. I recall him getting a ton of big hits for the Brewers a few years ago, and was betting he would get a big hit in the playoffs, or games leading up to it. And he finally did, last night. Then hurts his hip. Drat….

I’m so over Will Smith. He was a top reliever, just in time for his FA, but he’s not currently. Problem is we don’t have a closer anywhere else. Jacob Webb? He’s looked the best of the current crew. Somebody has to step up. That’s the kind of thing that propels a team. We won’t get out of round 1 without a dependable closer.

If the Braves wanted to get creative, they could promote AAA RHP Jaseel De La Cruz. This cat sits at 96-98 on the fastball and can touch 100. He also has a “wicked” slider and occasional changeup that is the pitch he’s trying to perfect to remain a starter. But the fastball/slider combo might be ML ready now. Take that big 96-98 fastball and concentrate it to 1 inning and you’ll get 98-99 consistently. And honestly, the bullpen is his fastest route to The Show. I’ve said the same about lefty Tucker Davidson, although I’m not sure he’s back 100% healthy from elbow inflammation. Those are the best candidates currently in house and on the 40-man.

About last night: Watching the game last night I remarked to Josie that the braves were playing against a team of wide receivers. Numbers on the jerseys were 76, 77, 72… They did have one line backer (number 38) but lots of high numbers. Who knew Prigg wearing number 99 would start a trend?

Soler has been a real gem, a professional hitter. I wish Ozzie would hurry up and get his 30th dinger so he can stop stressing at the plate. It appears to me he is trying to hit every ball 450 feet and it’s making his swing long.

I know Travis has not hit for a high average this season but his hits have been timely. His lead off double in the fifth opened the flood gates.

Well, at least they are talking: On the report that Freddie and the Braves are at least discussing an extension. I doubt the Braves will pay Freddie what he could garner on the open market but he may be willing to take a little less. I am reminded of what Greg Maddux said when he turned down more money to play somewhere else besides Atlanta, “Poor me, I guess I will just have to make due with only $18 million dollars.

I recognize it takes real planning to not squander millions when you are young. Retiring before age 40 can be tough. I think Bobby Bo was brilliant in structuring a deal where he received a million dollars a year from the Mets into perpetuity. But to say that Freddie and the Braves have been talking is simply stating the obvious. To make the dubious and “ominous” note that there is still a gap remaining is even more obvious. If there wasn’t a gap, they’d already have a deal.

Getting down to nitty gritty time folks.

Touki has not looked a sharp as he initially did when first reporting in August.

Ian Anderson still stout but not a strike out pitcher, just needs to keep his pitches of the fat part of the bat.

I think the Braves have an interesting dilemma in deciding who to keep and who to part company with this winter. I suppose it will ultimately come down to money again. One thing for sure, the Braves need to keep Freddie in a Braves uniform for the balance of his career.

And yes, as it always does, it ultimately comes down to pitching. Good thing the Braves have the day off today, Snit won’t be tempted to use Luke Jackson nor have to use Will Smith again.

Jacob Webb appears to be the only reliable arm other than Jackson coming out of the pen these days. SCARY…

Hard to make up 5 games with only 20 to go. Not saying it can’t be done, but it’s tough. Those last 3 head-to-head games of the season at home ought to be dillies. Hopefully the lead isn’t less than 3 when they get here.

sorta like when Chip mentioned a week or so ago that Tyler Matzek had gone 18 innings without giving up a run, and immediately gave up runs in 2,3 games in a row! Yikes….

I have learned to take all the talking heads with a grain of salt. More and more I turn the sound off and just watch the game.

That said, some announcers are really good, some are really bad. I prefer they keep their opinions to themselves and just report the game.

I cannot stand him during the games. If I hear OPPO TACO one more time, I may throat punch the TV. And I know I am an optimist, but Jordan can never ever admit that any member of the team is having a bad day or a bad stretch. Ever. He’s not even realistic, and I can’t take him seriously. Chip Caray is bad enough, but at least Jeff Franceour and Tom Glavine help balance the deficiency. Jordan just adds more bad to bad.

I know my Dad can only take so much baseball , and I will watch some early, then some Tucker, and perhaps watching between commercial breaks, or pausing Tucker if some offense is going on….anyways…oddly enough, I would say I have heard only Aussue Pete be more critical of the braves players when they screw up than Jordan. Jordan may have let his hair down more this year, so to speak. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I really thought he was terrible, basically forever…but, I am willing to give people a fair shake, if they try to improve, and I think he has. And Oppo Taco is a slogan he has to use now….
Just wish they had sprung the new kid , say,,,next year? what is the point in mid Sept? Jerome J should have been allowed to finish the season (I heard him say he had back surgery 3 weeks ago, how much pain he was in before, so perhaps he asked to retire, and wasn’t forced out)

perhaps he asked to retire, and wasn’t forced out

I remember reading a few weeks ago that Jerome J was simply retiring of his own will. There were a handful of factors involved in his decision.

First, he was simply done after 40 years of broadcasting. This quote was in the AJC: “My boss wanted to open negotiations for a new contract but after 15 seasons of hosting the pregame show of both the Braves and Hawks, I just feel it’s time to begin enjoying life full time,” Jurenovich said in a text. “Hosting for both teams can be a grind at times. Out of my respect for my colleagues, I want the transition to a new host to go smoothly and felt giving notice now that I will finish the Braves season would give the company plenty of time to find a replacement before the next NBA season.” I still remember him from the old days of CNN Headline news when he’d do the “CNN Headline Sports” break on the :20 and :50 mark of each hour.

Yes, he said he was to finish out the season, but that brings up the second item. He had major knee surgery in June, which is the reason he missed so much of that month. Then there was the back surgery that Ber mentioned.

Also, I read somewhere at the time of his announcement that he recently purchased his “retirement” home somewhere up in New England… I want to say Maine, but I can’t remember. That’s a little bit of a commute to Atlanta.

So all in all, he got to leave the industry on his own terms to do his own thing. That’s a very good thing.

Observations as we go into a critical west coast swing that starts with the formidable San Fran Giants:

The rotation, that has truly been a rotating collection of arms all season, really only has 2 reliable members at the moment being Charlie and Max. Huascar is the solid #3 right now, but he’s stlll prone to that 1 mistake filled inning. Touki is pitching his way out of it altogether. Ian still hasn’t found his groove since returning from the IL. He opens the all important road trip tonight and could make a huge difference in the last 4 weeks if he can get back on track against a solid Giant lineup. This team needs that guy that can dominate a lineup like Ian has proven he can do. I believe tonight’s start is key to the rest of the regular season.

Dansby was as red hot as any hitter on the planet for about 4 weeks, but has now cooled into a guy that’s clearly scuffling at the plate. That said, his defense is better than it’s ever been. Gonna need that bat to heat up, though, if we’re gonna make any headway against the Giants and Pads.

Riley is still a much improved hitter and has clearly turned the corner in his career. But he has also come back to earth a little bit recently and can no longer be seriously considered as an MVP candidate unless he goes on a real tear on this long west coast swing. And quite honestly, this team could use that kind of bump. It could elevate the rest of the hitters around him dramatically.

There’s plenty of power up and down the lineup to change the game with one sing, but we’re still not getting the timely hits when we need them. That last game vs. the Rockies was so very winnable. They let that one get away. Gotta put the ball in play fellas. It ain’t rocket surgery.

The Achilles heel of the team is the same that it’s been all season… the bullpen. Very few reliable arms out there now. We better hope the offense can give the team some padding because this bullpen is going to give up a late run. It’s what they do.

for those of you sleepy heads that can’t stay up past sunset 😉 Will Smith had a one run lead, 2 outs, 2 strikes, and….gives up a game tying homer in the 9th. VERY nearly , I mean by a foot, gave up a 2nd homer. He just doesn’t have closer stuff…I completely forgot he came from the Giants….I think one year he had a 2.50 + ERA in 66 innings, and had like 96-97 strikeouts…surely his fastball had more zip on it then.
Snit, if you want to wash out in the first round, keep him in the closer role.
Braves are what, 1-11 in extra inning games…no doubt they will lose tonight as well

well, just had the feel of a playoff game…braves completely unable to get a placed runner at 2nd even to 3rd, and the opposing team getting a key sacrifice fly….now, I admit, having a starter Kevin Gausman, get it, now, that was a new wrinkle is a very old, tired, worn out record of braves defeats (man, if only our pitching coach could have realized he needed to throw more splitters, we would have a very stout rotation, and the giants wouldn’t )

so, right now, the Phils are 2 games back playing a team that can’t win…and we are playing a team that can’t lose…wonderful, just…wonderful….

This weekend the Braves were in three very winnable games vs the Giants. However, it’s crunch time now as we wind down to the final gun. Time to make that big push. the final climb up heart break hill. I have no delusions in the Braves going deep into October without a real shut down closer but at this point, just getting there will be a real accomplishment.

No more excuses, Arizona and San Diego are at this point two teams that can be beat.

We’ve talked about this guy a few times earlier in the year. I said it then, and I’ll say it again. Remember the name Spencer Strider. He started the year in low-A Augusta, got bumped to high-A Rome, after just 3 starts there got bumped again to AA Mississippi where he has started 14 games and has averaged 13.4 K/9 IP. He has a plus fastball, but just average secondary stuff although his changeup is reported to be vastly improved. IMO, he profiles to be that great late inning guy we don’t currently have. He might get a taste next year and compete for a job in 2023.

Yep, keep the assembly line rolling. With the absence of PEDs, we should be seeing a roll back to the days where a kid did not really develop until age 26 or 27. There will be a time when the arm and shoulder just won’t answer the call but improved mechanics does stave off that probability usually until a team can no longer afford them.

It won’t be a AAA call up as young Bruce Elder is in line to start for Gwinnett tomorrow. He’s talented, but started the year in single-A, plus is not on the team’s 40-man roster. There’s a better chance of Gil starting that one.

Well, then there’s that. Perhaps if you can get Chavez, Touki and Smyly through the Snakes lineup once each, there won’t be too much ground left for the rest of the bullpen to cover. That would be the same bullpen that had to go 5 innings last night. Of course, that was 5 pitchers with just 1 inning each, so everyone should be still be available. And I still look for some move today to bring up a rested arm. Maybe since Newk walked 2 in his turn last night, he’ll be the guy optioned to open the spot. And how about Chris Martin tossing a clean inning with a K in his healthy return? He could be a big boost, right?

Two-year contracts for Soler, Duvall, and Rosario.
Hopefully AA will find the money with Ozuna still on the books.
Maybe for Swanson though he may be on the way out.

      Anybody thinking of 2022 yet?

      Always.

For what it’s worth, I fully believe the Braves and Freddie will come to a new deal, and that his deal will be the first one done. It’ll have to be because it will probably dictate what else they’re able to do.

IMO, the Braves are not likely to bring back all 3 of Rosario, Duvall and Soler. With Duvall having a “mutual” option for 2022, he might as well be a Free Agent along with the others. And with the kind of season he’s having, his price tag continues to rise. I could see where both sides would be interested in continuing his employment in Atlanta, but market forces might make that impossible.

      Speaking of impossible…

Sadly, the Marcell Ozuna contract will most certainly have an effect on who returns. Unless Alex can find a sucker, er… I mean trade partner to take Ozuna off his hands, he’s stuck with the obligation. Let us be reminded that the hit is for $16M in 2022, and $18M each in 2023 & 2024… not to mention the eventual buyout of the team option for 2025. Personally I do not see how he could return to the fold here in ATL with all that has occurred, but the reality is that there is not a mechanism for breaking the deal. It is what it is. The team will continue to get a break for whatever days he’s eventually suspended by MLB, but that likely won’t go too far into 2022. If a deal can be brokered for him to go elsewhere, it will almost certainly include money going the other way, and almost certainly include prospect capital. The only other scenario is a simple swap of bad contracts, and where does that leave us? Ozuna could very well finally fill the DH spot for which he has been envisioned sometime in 2022. No matter if he goes or if he stays, there will be a lasting financial onus on the team. It will also have an impact over what else the team is able to do.

And thus, I expect the Braves to bring back 1 veteran OF. That’s likely all they can afford. And it may not be any of the trio mentioned above as each one of them is setting themselves up for a decent FA deal. Guillermo Heredia will likely return as he’s just hitting his 2nd arb. Cristian Pache should be ready to make a contribution after 2 seasons in AAA. And of course Ronnie will be back a couple months into the season. It would not surprise me if the Braves and Joc Pederson agreed on their mutual option and thus he’s the guy that returns.

Oh… there is a sort of X factor here, too. Soler has credited the Braves hitting coaches with helping him become a better hitter. Maybe he chooses to come back as he feels comfortable here with the support staff? I could see it. Maybe he takes the 1-year pillow deal with an eye toward putting together a full season of production. He wouldn’t be the first guy to take that strategy.

Now Swanson… do y’all realize that Dans is 4th on the team in RBI ahead of Freddie Freeman? His recent slump muddies the fact that he was one of the most effective hitters on the team for much of the season. He is in line for one last trip through the arb circus. I actually think he could be in line for an extension. If the Braves are going to do it, this is the year for it… before he hits the open market. And playing devil’s advocate, if Dans were non-tendered, who would fill the void? There is not a candidate in the organization meaning AA would have to go out and find another. I don’t see anyone available that is an upgrade, especially defensively. Dansby will almost certainly be back.

And at the root of all this discussion is the expiring CBA. How draft compensation and arb is redefined could very well toss a wrench in the middle of all of this discussion.

One thing I have come to learn about major league hitters. You can teach them to hit for a higher average but you cannot teach them to hit with more power.

My helpful hint for players experiencing some fatigue as s results of the long season: Use a lighter bat…. slow bat speed means more swings and misses. You must first hit the baseball before you can drive it out of the park…. END OF LESSON…

It’s always cool when a guy gets his first ML callup. I hope he gets in the game today, not because we need him but because it’s not really consequential.

Also, I hope that Arcia is back to let Dansby rest a day or 2. Dans went from a high peak to a sudden valley. I hope he’s healthy, but you sometimes don’t know everything that is going on behind the scenes. (Nor should we.)

Also prayers up for Touki for the loss he’s dealing with.

BTW… Dylan Lee was a former starting prospect for the Marlins who converted to relief back in 2018, but never could get over that last hurdle in his development with them. He signed as a FA with the Braves back in April. He’s actually looked pretty good in Gwinnett where he has fanned 52 batters in 34 appearances (45 2/3 IP) to only 6 free passes. That will get you noticed in Atlanta. He doesn’t throw high-90’s gas, but he obviously can spot his fastball and mixes it with a pretty good slider/curve breaking pitch. He’s a long, lanky lefty with alot of movement in his 3/4 delivery that might be somewhat deceptive to the hitter.

His response on getting the news?

      I like the guy already.

WAY behind here….saw some of the 2 games in AZ, including Duvall’s amazing blast. Like Glavine said, even at 482, it looked longer than that…so glad the offense showed up again. Do wish they could work more on moving runners over, and shortening their swings with 2 strikes, at least once in a while (say 1-0 games?)
Funny how Glavine was shaking his head over not starting Smiley yesterday. It worked out, but odd…Missed his pitching , but the highlights I saw looked like his breaking stuff was….breaking. Looked a lot better. that can only be a good thing, right? Might be a better option for middle relief, than Tomlinson is right now…

Smyly’s curve is still very good, but his velo is down even with extended rest. His fastball yesterday was measuring between 90-91. If you can’t make ’em respect your fastball, they’ll just sit on your curveball. And that only really works about once through the lineup. So he fits where he is at the moment. This was the odd case of the newly emerged “opener” theory, of which I have mixed opinions. It’s hard to not like yesterday’s results, though. It’s also hard to second guess Snit’s pitching moves in the game. Odd that his “bullpen management” is only mentioned when a reliever, say Will Smith, fails to do his job. I think Snit does OK with managing a fairly suspect assortment of arms. You can only put so much lipstick on the pig.

BTW, I wonder if Touki’s recent struggles are related to his recent undefined loss for which he is out on bereavement? We see these guys as emotionless performers, but they have lives outside of baseball too. Who knows what he’s been dealing with and for how long?

Yes, Smyly looked looked pretty good last night. Jacob Webb looked exceptional, Jesse… well, he wiggled off the hook but was not sharp. Luke looked tired and Minter still scares me.

I stayed awake for the entire game. I am old and I have been dragging all day because of it. Then again, I was born old.

Yep, I much prefer Ozzie hitting third. With that, the Braves have a 6-4 guy leading off and a 5-8 guy hitting third. GO FIGURE… modern day baseball.

Aside from Chris Martin giving up a late gopher, that was pretty much a complete game. And I suppose in some weird twisted way, with an 8 run lead, Martin was probably just throwing strikes and let one get a little too fat. Maybe I shouldn’t even complain about it? After all, what would we say if he walked the guy? We’d say, “You have an 8 run lead! Just throw strikes!” So I retract my complaint. It was a pretty good and complete game.

Ian made his case for the 3rd rotation slot. It was a pretty good case.

    Austin is locked in.

There are some who think that the NL MVP race could come down to a head to head between Riley & Bryce Harper in the 3 gamer vs. the Phils next week. If the lead is still 3 games (sorry for using numbers) when they get to town, what a series that will be!

Baltimore played the Phils tough. Keep wearing out that pen guys…. The Mutts are toast. Lets hope the Buccos can take a game or two from the Phillies.

Adam Duvall was robbed of a home run last night. Not because a ball was caught but because no one could tell if the outfielder had caught the ball or not. It wasn’t and bounce over the fence but Riley ran back towards first and was called out because Adam (passes) him on the base paths. Duvall was credited with a single but was allowed to score… Another thing I have never seen before.

Ozzie is much better hitting third and moving Freddie up to the 2 hole hasn’t hurt Freeman either.

About last night… That was some finish. I had given up on the Braves after the Manny slam. However, Solar’s 3 run dinger brought them back. Never give up, never surrender… A Taliban mantra methinks.

I would not want to play the Cardinals right now in a one game play-off…. Talk about peaking at the right time.

A statement perhaps. Huascar Ynoa should also be on notice. He needs to be moved to the pen. No ML starter can survive on just 2 pitches. And no ML pitcher can throw his slider 16 times in a row and not expect to get tattooed. Braves are limping to the finish line with just 3 real starters and hoping they can cobble together enough wins to get to the post-season where they only really need 3.

I was telling my Dad after the first 2 walks, there was no way the braves would/could win in the 9th…best case scenario was getting out of the 9th 4-4…amazing that Will got out of it….good for him…and very good for the braves….

I’m not sure I’ve seen a closer get more excited about a save. Smith was PUMPED after that last K. But you’re right… he’s 100% responsible for the mess, but he’s also 100% responsible for getting out of it. Personally, I’d prefer a little less drama.

I think if you had offered up 7-3 on a west coast roadie before they left town, each of us would have gladly taken it. Well, that’s what we got. Honestly, the Phils getting the Orioles and Pirates back to back was a scheduling gift for them. All in all, facing the chasers for 3 games at home in the regular season’s last week is what it’s all about.

BTW, both teams are off today with 6 straight to finish out the regular season… so I was trying to figure out how they are a half game off in the standings. It’s that COL rainout. I sure hope that we don’t need that half game at season’s end. A series sweep against the Philthies can take care of it in quick order. I’m good with that.

For what its worth, the Braves finish with 3 against the Mets at home; the Phils have 3 in Miami.

Things should be rocking at Truist this week, The placed should be packed for the 3 game set with the Fillies.

Watching Will Smith slog thru the ninth yesterday was almost as painful as being there.

I watch the last part of the Yankees vs Red Sox game last night. Talk about a inept bunch of fielders. It was like watching the Bad News Bears re-runs. A reminder of why you don’t give teams extra outs.

Ber, if the Braves make it thru this week, they will face Milwaukie in the first round. The two wild cards will face off in a single game and the winner of that game will then take on the team with the best record.

Heading into this all important series with the Phils, all…, let me repeat that, all the pressure is on Philly. They really need the sweep. Not to get all off in numbers and such, but even if they take 2 of 3, they only gain 1 game in the standings. Conversely, the Braves need just 2 of 3 to seal it before hosting the Mutts for what will hopefully be 3 tune-up games for the reserves.

    I like our chances.

For those who keep up with such things, Spencer Strider did pretty well in his AAA debut in the bullpen for Gwinnett last night. He struck out 3 of the 4 batters he faced in his 1 IP.

Strider might just be the closer of the future… the near future. He’s a power pitcher whose fastball reaches 99, who possess an above average change, and average to above average breaking pitches. And he locates his pitches.

OK, I’m gonna stop beating around the bush. He’s probably better than most of the arms we have muddling through our current ML bullpen, with all due respect to the Friendly Neighborhood Slider-Man. The overlooked Luke Jackson is not only our best reliever, he’s been one of the best in MLB this year. Check the numbers. But I digress…

All that said about Strider, don’t get any froggy ideas. He’s NOT on the 40-man roster, thus is not eligible to help this smoke-and-mirrors bullpen in the post-season. And that’s a darn shame, because I believe he could contribute right now, even if he did start the season in single-A. Remember, he was a college kid, so he’s had some seasoning even if not in the pros. Still it’s moot point. And I wish it wasn’t.

I have to wonder, though, if the Braves could clinch tonight… would they promote him for an appearance or 2 vs. the Mets just to give him the experience? Teams used to do such things, but maybe not so much anymore.

Man… if only he was already on the 40-man…

as Steve Allen used to say…all seriousness aside….I feel a LOT better about los bravos right now…V’s fav was quite happy with the small ball they played last night, (something he has campaigned for , even though the braves are homer happy) and I have to agree. You just can’t count on hitting 3 homers off of the Brewers starters…you have to play smart…you can do both, can’t you?
Gil, I too am concerned about Freddie “warning track power” Freeman. I don’t care what he or Dansby say/or think on the subject (I think we have heard this record before) let them pinch hit/leaver a game after 5 innings…Austin may be ok playing 162 cuz he’s so young…

Okay Joc, what’s with the pearls?

I think Joc is the guy who will do anything on a dare, or just for no real reason at all. Seen his hair?

I did hear something really interesting this afternoon about Joc. Travis d’Arnaud told a reporter not to undersell Joc’s importance to this team. He said when Joc walked into the clubhouse after the July 15 trade, the whole mood lightened up immeasurably. Joc is the guy who keeps everyone loose, and you have to have that guy on your team.

By the way, on July 15 the Braves were in 3rd place, 4.5 games back of the division leading Mets. TOday they are 4.5 games up and on the verge of clinching with their next win. Much has changed since Joc lightened the room. Coincidence? You may draw your own conclusion, but Td’A is a veteran who has been in more than one clubhouse.

I stayed up and watched all the post-game coverage last night. It was pretty fun. How much does the clubhouse matter? I think we saw how important Joc Pederson and Guillermo Heredia are to this team as much outside the lines than inside. That intangible is why the Mets can never sustain success, and it’s why the Braves can never be counted out.

Another shout out goes to Snit for creating the culture there that allows that environment to thrive. We can debate his in game tactics all day long (although I think you cannot debate his success), but the man is one of the best in the game because he learned from one of the best how to manage the entirety of the team from top to bottom. Every player on the team would walk through fire for him. If you didn’t get to catch the post-game last night, he showed perfectly why he is the man he is. When asked in interview how special this season was to him, he could only pause to collect himself as he was overcome with emotion. He’s as real a man as you’ll ever see in the public eye, and that’s a rare panacea in this modern world of manufactured reality.

MLBTR’s Steve Adams: He’ll technically require commissioner approval to be added to the postseason roster as an injury replacement, because he wasn’t on the 40-man roster on Sept. 1. However, such replacements are reasonably common, and it’s unlikely the Braves would’ve called Strider up for the final three games if they weren’t intent on deploying him during the looming NLDS.

Man I hope they can add him. We need some smoke out of that pen.

Also rooting for a Dodger win and a Giants loss today. Why not? Force somebody to use up all that Karma prior to the play-offs.

One thing for sure, the number of wins you have had during the regular season means absolutely zero when it comes to post season. It is like the difference between spring training and regular season games.
