200: On The Precipice

by Kenny Sirmans AKA Voice of Raisins

As of the time of this writing, the lockout has just ended and the Free Agency Frenzy is just beginning. Teams have 3 days to get their players into camp, assuming they even know as of yet who those players are going to be. For the Braves, there is still a lot of work to be done.

A lot.

Priority #1: Get Freddie Freeman inked. Period. No putzing around. Get it done and make him happy.

Priority #2: Find at least 1 more OF. As this roster currently sits, the only OF’s are Adam Duvall, Marcell Ozuna, and Guillermo Heredia. Duvall doesn’t hit lefties well, Ozuna doesn’t field well, and Heredia is not a starter. We all want Ronald Acuña, Jr. to be healthy, but the reality is that he’s probably not going to be able to contribute until closer to May or even June. Cristian Pache will have another opportunity to make the team and has a realistic shot at it if he can impress in the abbreviated spring training. Even if he makes it though, the entirety of the group I just mentioned are all right handed. Not a lefty in the bunch. In fact, if we get Freddie back on board, he’s the only true lefty in the entire lineup.

Priority #3: Find a LH bat, or even two, to balance the lineup a little. This actually ties into the previous priority. We need a LH power bat for the OF. It’s that simple. Finding one we can afford is not that simple. I think we need to find that guy via trade. And if he’s got value, we’ll have to part with value. It may be time to finally stop hugging some of these prized prospects and use their prospect capital while the value is still there. Some of the guys, like Drew Waters and Kyle Muller, have lost their sheen. William Contreras has been leapfrogged by Shae Langeliers. We need to extract their value while before it dwindles.

Priority #4: Find some quality for the bench. Granted, this is something that can be done as spring unfolds and other rosters are fine tuned. But it still must be done. We have Manny Piña at backup catcher, Orlando Arcia as the projected utilityman, and the aforementioned Heredia. Again… all are RH bats. That cannot remain.

Priority #5: This team could use another starting pitcher, preferably the proverbial veteran innings eater. I’m just not sure there will be any money left over from Freddie’s haul and whatever OF is obtained to pay anyone else. We do have youngsters that can backfill behind Charlie Morton (assuming he’s 100% healthy), Max Fried, and Ian Anderson. I believe Kyle Wright proved during the World Series that he can be a bona fide ML starter. And Tucker Davidson showed some moments last season when he was healthy. Kyle Muller did as well. There are candidates, but ideally you’d like another vet. Still, this one is at the bottom of the list. Oh… and as for Mike Soroka, I’d love for him to make it all the way back. But even if he does, it won’t be before mid-season. I think you have to consider anything you get from him this year as a bonus.

Those are the things that must be done before April 7. I’m hoping that Freddie is already back in the fold before this is even published. I’ll be refreshing Twitter a lot today.

A lot.

By the way, Eddie Rossario would fill two needs with one player as I see it.

Aside from the obvious “core economic issues” that were worked out in the new CBA, there were several on field items that either start this year or next. Here is a partial list gleaned from MLBTR:

–> The Universal Designated Hitter has arrived for 2022 as anticipated.

–> There will be a limit of no more than five times that a player can be optioned to the minor leagues in a given season.

–> The league will allow compensatory draft pick inducements to discourage service time manipulation. Teams will be awarded picks if players not held down to gain an extra year of service play well enough to merit awards consideration. Exact details are forthcoming. In addition, players who finish first or second in Rookie of the Year voting will receive service time credits that presumably will grant them a year of service even if they were held down for part of the season.

–> Player uniforms will feature advertising for the first time. This will include patches on jerseys and decals on batting helmets. Players will be allowed to engage in arrangements with sports betting companies for the first time.

–> The postseason has been expanded to 12 teams. The top teams in each league will get byes. The wild card round will be a best of three format.

–> There are not going to be any more game 163 tiebreakers as the league is adopting a tiebreaker system similar to the one used in the NFL.

–> The MLB Draft will include a six team draft lottery to discourage “tanking”. Exact details on how the lottery will work are forthcoming.

–> The MLB Draft will be cut to 20 rounds. Bonus pools are said to be increasing, but it’s not clear whether that’s an increase relative to past 20 rounds or something else.

–> A pitch clock, ban on shifts and larger bases will go into effect for the 2023 season, pending action by a newly-formed committee that will be skewed towards team (non-player) representatives. There will be a 45-day window for the league to implement rule changes.

–> Also starting in 2023, the schedule will become more balanced, with each team playing each other team in the league for at least one series. The exact format is still being determined, but this will be a pretty substantial change that won’t be felt for a while.

There are others, but these are the highlights…

    Jayson Stark:

I’m hearing from teams in Florida that there will be a new spring training schedule. Teams will be grouped in similar pods to last year, according to geography. So there will be a Tampa pod, Fort Myers pod and South Florida pod.

Smart. Gotta streamline it now, and lessening travel is the best way to do it.

I try not to pedal in rumor, but I have heard a couple of interesting things this morning. First, DOB has shown that bookies.com has odds on Freddie Freeman’s 2022 team, and the odds favor the Yankees slightly. Why? Who knows.

But that said, it is also being reported in baseball circles today the Yankees prefer Matt Olson over Freddie, and that they are working harder on that front. That should allow us all to breathe a little easier… at least I am. I still believe that in the end, Freddie will come home. It just seems to be “right”.

Also, there is some sentiment around the web that a Braves ~ Jorge Soler reunion could be in the works. I love Jorge, but he’s a another RH bat. If Alex could find a way to dump Marcell Ozuna, then Soler is my preference to replace him. But I don’t see either really happening at the moment.

Freddie is the logjam to the rest of the lineup. Gotta get that done. C’mon Alex!!

Also, if the rumors of Braves interest in Nelson Cruz for DH has any basis at all in truth, I’m drilling over a lineup that would have Acuna, Freeman, Ozuna, Riley and Cruz… not to mention Albies, Duvall, d’Arnaud and Swanson. They might hit 1000 bombs.

Nellie goes to the Nats. Not only is Freddie still unsigned, the Braves have done NADA to fill the massive holes in the roster. Is AA so totally immersed in the Freddie derby that he’s letting every other player go elsewhere? Gonna be a goofy squad with both Cristian Pache and Drew Waters lining up alongside Adam Duvall in the OF. It’ll be even goofier with Greyson Jenista at 1B.

Well, this is from the most optimistic participant here on the ol’ B&S…

I don’t like this delay. If something doesn’t move today, then I don’t think it’s gonna happen. Both AA and Freddie know what it will take. If they haven’t gotten there by this afternoon then I don’t think they will. Both must have drawn their respective lines in the sand which apparently have no intersection. The only saving grace here is that I feel the same way about the Dodgers. The Yankees could still swoop in with their deep pockets and an unreasonable offer. Same for the Jays. My fear is that the Padres will get into the fray.

Is it too early to start speculating on whom the Braves new 1B will be?

New Braves beat writer Justin Toscano:
    ·
Marcell Ozuna says he apologized to his team for what happened last year. He also wanted to say sorry to the fans. He said he believes he’s grown as a person over the last year.

Marcell Ozuna when asked if he’s thought about the reaction from fans, home and on the road, this season:

sadly, I keep expecting to hear that FF signed for 7 years, 245 Mil, and that the braves best offer was 100 Mil and 2 years less…
Thoppy has annoyed me a few times, but…he has done a good job overall no doubt (and got incredibly lucky with those 3 trades last year, I mean, he couldn’t have dreamed those guys would do as well as they did)
But, I REALLY hope he isn’t going to lose FF on the fear that in year 6, FF isn’t worth what he would get that year. Thoppy probably won’t even be around as GM/whatever his complete title is, in 2028.
Was he not there (wait, he was in a skybox with covid, right?) when EVERY player said they had to bring him back? Can you imagine the awkward interviews with players IF he goes to L.A/NY? I am sure Snit will tell them to toe the line, but it will suck for them as well as us. and it’ll tell Acuna , Ozzie, et al plan on going elsewhere when your deal is up
How long has it been since a team won back to back W.S. ? 20 years or so?
IF Thoppy saves Liberty 25 mil in the late 2020’s and the braves don’t go to the W.S (or lose the division to the Mutts even) he is going to be the most UN-popular man in and around the ATL.
plus, any 1st baseman the braves trade/sign, is going to get roasted if they get off to a slow start….and none will be as good as Freddie …so many bad things happen if FF is not signed….

Matt Olson is just 27 years old. That’s the key here. You can chalk this up to the new era of analytics. GMs are just loathe to pay guys late into their 30’s because the numbers simply do not lie.

I love Freddie, but from a purely unemotional standpoint, acquiring the 27 year old Olson, who is not unlike Freddie in many ways, is a pretty solid organizational move. Especially if there was a deep sense that Freddie was leaving anyway. But man… that’s a haul. Langeliers seemed a clear ML talent, but Cusick may turn out to be the gem of the deal for Oakland.

My concern immediately turns to the Braves CF situation. It clears the path for Michael Harris, but he’s not ready yet. Will a deal for Tampa’s Kevin Kiermaier be far behind? He’s a Gold Glove CF at the end of his relatively team friendly deal whose timeline might match perfectly with the arrival of Harris. Oh, he’s a lefty bat too. Does AA have another trade up his sleeve?

Y’all, I love Freddie Freeman as much as the next guy, but don’t let Matt Olson’s talent get lost here. He’s just entering his prime, and he’s a top… and I mean TOP talent.

Also in this is a cost savings this year and next that will allow AA to go out and get another bat, or another pitcher, r even both.

There are alot of positives here. I’ll miss Freddie and I’ll root him on forever as long as he isn’t playing against the Braves. But there’s alot to like about what has hapneed today.

Yes, I have been anticipating such a move as the weekend came and went with Freddie still on the market. Yes, I’ll miss him too but that is baseball and the Braves do have other needs. Centerfield, another lefty power bat. I wait to see how much FF gets paid. Yankees or Dodgers. With Tatis breaking his wrist and likely out for 3 months, the Padres are indeed a possibility.

I hated to see Shea traded but Contrases wasn’t going to get it done. Maybe now the Braves bring Rasario and Soler back for the difference in the money.

I feel way behind right now on the roster make up.

I’m hearing Soler is a strong possibility. I know we need LH bats, but Soler’s track record is well known. If you put a lineup together such as Acuña, Olson, Ozuna, Riley, Soler, Albies, Duvall, d’Arnaud, Swanson… it’s a powerful lineup. It’s still too RH for me. But that’s a ton of power.

This has settled in to me a little. Here’s the observation:

The Braves just picked up the best hitter on the trade market. He’s just in his 2nd year of arb. He’ll likely make about $10M this year and possibly $15M next. That allows AA to make other moves that he wouldn’t have with paying Freddie $30M this year and next. And when Ozuna leaves the books in 2 years, Olson will get his big extension.

Remember, he’s a local guy from Lilburn, GA… the school that also produced Jeff Francouer. He has alot more of a reason to stay here than west coast Freddie.

What I am now hearing is that Jorge Soler is on the radar, and that another starting pitcher is also on the shopping list.

As you lament the end of the Freddie era, just understand that this move by AA allows the Braves to build an overall better roster this year and next.

Get on the Olson train. We’re all gonna love this kid.

Truth be told, I expected Freddie to leave for California this season after he was not re-signed last spring. Not that I wanted it to be so, just being realistic about it. 10 years was a pretty good run after all. Done be surprised to see the Brave shop for a new shortstop.

So much was said about the Braves not extending Freddie before the season started. But few considered that Freddie might want to play out his deal and evaluate his options. With Alex’s office in high information lockdown, nobody ever knows what actually goes on behind those doors. Not even click hunters Jon Heyman and Buster Olney.

Don’t lose the fact also that it takes both sides to make a deal. We don’t know what the dynamics were in the Braves negotiations. We only have Jon Heyman’s and Buster Olney’s click-bait opinions. And we all know what opinions are like. Nobody knows the negotiations and figures but the Braves front office and Freddie’s reps. That’s it. Freddie just spent 3 winter months at home in warm SoCal under lockout. Perhaps his family decided they’d like to stay home in the summer too and like to bop over to ARI for spring. It’s a very possible scenario.

Now, to the topic of prospects…

The A’s wanted the Yankees’ #1 prospect for Olson. They probably wanted ours too. They didn’t get him. But prospects are just that. How many have we seen fall flat in the majors? More fall short of expectations than not. I hope that Pache figures it out, but we saw how he performed in ATL. Can Langeliers hit above AA? Prospects are just living, breathing bundles of hope. None are certain. Michael Harris is close, though. And he’s still a Brave.

In the year 2022, that would be a rarity anyway. Baseball is a business more these days than ever before. When players are commanding $30M/year, it has to be a business. That’s not the fault of Liberty, AA, Freddie… any entity per se. It’s just a reality of the evolution of the game.

Had the Braves paid Freddie $30/yr, they’d be sitting at about $167M in payroll and #8 in MLB in payroll. That doesn’t leave alot of room (maybe $10M?) to add anyone else. And we all know there are more holes on the roster. We’d probably have Guillermo Heredia starting in the OF. Now the payroll is at about $147, and there is at least $20M-$30M to play with. Alex can fill out the entire roster now with ML caliber players. Remember, there is no bench. Manny Piña is the backup catcher with Orlando Arcia, Travis Demeritte, Heredia, and Greyson Jenista as the other candidates. There is so much left to be done and now AA can properly go shopping.

I hear the rumors about Jorge Soler, but unless Alex can move Marcell Ozuna, I can’t see them adding another RH bat. I can see him adding a LH CF and a veteran starting pitcher. I think Kevin Kiermaier is a slight possibility, but I also think that out trade ammo might be dried up now. Alex might have to turn exclusively to FA.

LH CF remaining on the FA market:
    Brett Gardner
    Billy Hamilton
    Joc Pederson

None of those are great options.

    Ew.

V, I know it’s a business , but….but….FF wasn’t like other guys….Phat Albert was going to take the best deal. Carlos Correa , is all about the best deal. FF would have taken a deal that was fair. and the braves weren’t going to do it….I don’t care what anyone says…I watched hour after hour of coverage (as I am sure others did to) of the braves WS parade and to see EVERYONE all but demand the braves re-sign him, and then not…it’s going to affect the team. This didn’t happen say in Dec when they could mentally deal with it, they though FF would be in spring training in a few days and now he won’t
It is a business they say…and I think Liberty and esp. thoppy think they are too clever by half. the greek is padding himself on the back thinking how he always wins when it comes to players contracts (though I think my new nickname for him is mumbles, WSB had an impromptu interview with him and some reporters and he was hemming and hawing, and saying umm a lot…at about 60 DB. I think he’d probably had some F bombs tossed at him by some fans that recognized him just before…I could barely understand anything he said…claimed he can’t really talk about FF cuz still a free agent, and even when he tried to talk up Olson, it was completely bloodless, very odd)
heres the thing…how often to new players hit the ground running, esp when they switch leagues? Olson may have a terrible month or 2 trying too hard, new league and I bet some boos, even though he didn’t ask to be traded…. FF will likely stink for a month or 2, esp if he goes to the Yanks. We’d better hope that’s where he goes cuz he will be a real thorn in our sides if he faces the braves in the playoffs…IF we can even get back….
    heres the other thing 😉
I know I’m not as strong as I was in 1995 (I had a life then) but I am getting more and more agnostic towards baseball….don’t want to re-sign the face of the franchise cuz your budget might go up for a few years til Ozunas gone? well…you won’t see me much around here if say the Mutts or Phils get off to a hot start and the braves are say below .500 (I know, a big loss if I’m not around) I just….don’t care , esp after winning the W.S. It was DUMB , DUMB LUCK. We were not a better team than the Dodgers, just a hotter team. I’ll be honest about Freddie. I don’t know that he’ll get the 6 yrs / $180M he’s reportedly seeking. The game has become to analytics driven. Analytics say he isn’t worth that.

As I understand it this afternoon from the Braves flagship radio station, the Braves had an offer on the table to Freddie waiting for him to answer. At the same time, they had the agreed upon trade with the A’s, only waiting for Alex to sign off on it. The Braves could not control when Freddie would choose, but they could control when they would answer OAK. In the end, they could not risk losing both Freddie and the trade deal. You do what you have to do. I will continue to contend they will be just as good on the field if not better, especially of they can go out and get another good OF bat and starting pitcher… not to mention serviceable bench pieces.

There is still much to do. As the lineup stands right now, with Ronnie still on the shelf, we are stuck with no real leadoff hitter, so we have to just fit one in somehow. It probably looks something like this:

    Dansby, SS (R)
    Olson, 1B (L)
    Riley, 3B (R)
    Ozuna, DH (R)
    Duvall, RF (R)
    Albies, 2B (S)
    d’Arnaud, C (R)
    Drew Waters, CF (S)
    Guillermo Heredia, LF (R)

    That doesn’t work, folks.

    And the bench?

    Manny Piña, C (R)
    Orlando Arcia, Util (R)
    Travis Demeritte, OF (R)
    no one else

There is alot of work left to do. Alex has the payroll flexibility to do said work now.

I won’t be surprised to see Joc Pederson come back to play an OF spot until Ronnie returns. He’s a lefty and he can play all 3 OF spots. He fills more than one need. He could also platoon with Duvall once Ronnie returns.

Still need another guy out there though besides Guillermo Heredia.

Now that we’ve gotten a night’s sleep past the emotion of seeing Freddie Freeman depart via FA, we need to concentrate on the total roster. After all, the reality is that Freddie’s production has been accounted for. What we don’t have is a CF. What we don’t have are LH bats for the bench. What we don’t have is definitive spot for Marcell Ozuna. Is he the DH or the LF? Right now, he’s the LF. And that means we need a DH or LF. There are many needs on this team that do not involve the Freddie/Mattie saga. Moving forward is not only healthy, it’s necessary.

I agree, time to add in the face of subtraction. Methinks the Braves gave up too much for two years of Olsen. I’m pretty sure Matt will ask for more than Freddie will get when his turn at the golden ring comes in 2024. Maybe they teach Ozuna to play first base.

So, centerfield…. Sure miss the Andrew Jones era don’t we?

If I were Dansby, I would be polishing up my resume’…

Rumor has it, Freddie and his agent wasn’t given a heads up prior to the Olsen trade??? What, they didn’t figure AA would blink? As much as I would have loved to see a return of Fab Five, I can’t blame Alex for moving on.

Message to players, when the Braves make an offer, it is pretty much set in stone to their mind.

Freddie in not the first former Braves to move on, Furcal, Andrew Jones and Brian McCann immediately come to mind. Since the team was stolen out from under Ted Turner, the organization has been very tight fisted.

Hey, it could be worse, we could be the Reds…. Man, it must be brutal to be a Reds fan right now. No Big Red Machine this year, or maybe ever….

Methinks the Braves gave up too much for two years of Olsen.

The same was thought when we acquired Fred McGriff. Can anybody even recall who we gave up? And I fully understand you could also bring up the example of Mark Teixeira. That’s fair. But all that means is that you cannot ever grade a trade right after it happens. It takes time. So anyone who immediately thinks we won or lost, you’re a few years too early making that judgment.

Rumor has it, Freddie and his agent wasn’t given a heads up prior to the Olsen trade???

Nothing leaks out of an Alex Anthopolous office regardless of situation. Nothing.

Message to players, when the Braves make an offer, it is pretty much set in stone to their mind.

Freddie bears some responsibility here. Reportedly he had been sitting on the offer a while with no indication of acceptance/refusal. Alex had to make a choice, and he chose certainty over speculation. I cannot blame him.

And for what it’s worth, according to Bowman, the Braves did move up monetarily from their first offer last summer. The numbers aren’t known, but it was a higher offer, but most likely still just 5 years. Blame analytics. Also blame Albert Pujols, Miguel Cabrera, Eric Hosmer, Robinson Cano, Giancarlo Stanton, etc. Chipper Jones was the exception at age 38, not the example. If Freddie was waiting for Alex to add that extra year, he waited too long. And given that he’s still unsigned 24 hours later, I’m not sure the reported suitors are offering it either. If you think the Dodgers are, where do you think Alex learned his methods? Rumors are that Tampa is only offering 3 years but at a higher AAV. I’m interested to see where he lands. I wish him the very best except vs. Atlanta. I’d love to see him in Boston. My gut is now leaning toward Toronto.

          One more note here…

Another example of an older player still performing would be Nelson Cruz. At 40 he was still crushing it. Of course, the DH hasn’t played in the field in a few years. He never had a long term deal. He signed a 4 year deal with Seattle that carried through his age 37 season. Since then it’s been all 1 year deals.

When the steroid era ended, so did the old man era. It’s just the state of the game today.

Remember the last time the Braves allowed a former MVP and very popular clubhouse leader to leave via FA, then traded prospects for a local product coming off an All-Star season? How about when they allowed Terry Pendleton to leave, then traded highly regarded youngsters P Esteban Yan and OFs Roberto Kelly and Tony Tarasco to Montreal for Marquis Grissom.

    The year… 1995.

V, this is what caught my eye….
    Overall Avg. Avg. w/RISP

    Freeman Overall Avg. .306 Avg. w/RISP .327 Active Rank*5

    Olson Overall Avg..252 Avg. w/RISP .246 Active Rank 127
Tex his age 27 season 30 HR’s 112 RBIs .306 .400 OBP so he was the same age as Olson, and a better average hitter. Remember what happened when he came over? After awhile, Teams pitched around Chipper, to get to him! (can’t find his career RISP, for some reason!)

Now, to be fair to Olson, he was by far the best hitter on their team, til they traded for Starling Marte. Surprised he wasn’t walked more. If the braves got Soler back, then you have a pretty potent lineup for sure

      Two items on Olson…

You touched on one of them; he had nobody to protect him in that lineup.

Second, have you seen that ballpark he’s leaving? RingCentral Coliseum, which might actually be a worse name than Truist Park, is considered a pitchers’ park, and Olson still hit 39 bombs playing half his games there. Maybe more importantly, though, is that despite that, he still put up All-Star numbers and received MVP votes. Olson is going to feast on the short Truist RF porch.

As for the difference in AVG, there are alot of other numbers we could go to. Like HR or SLG. But the important one to me here is Olson had 111 RBI vs 83 for Freddie, despite the difference in AVG w/ RISP.

But we’re missing the bigger picture here. It’s really not about who is better. It’s about the fact that Matt Olson is a suitable replacement for Freddie in the lineup. And it’s perfectly OK to be sad about Freddie leaving and happy about Matt Olson arriving at the same time. We can do both… and we should do both.

Yeah, but….one guy causes pitchers to wet their pants, the other guy…not so much. He’s a lesser Tex right now (Tex’s number were more like FF than I remembered, but still wasn’t a threat when the game was on the line, most of the time)
So, saving about 15 mil this year vs FF? not much room if Alex is on a real leash.

a huge stadium no doubt, but they have made it a LOT more hitter friendly, this ain’t the park Reggie Jackson hit in. 18 at home last year, 21 on the road.
for the career, 66 HRs at home, 76 on the road.

I’m rooting for Olson. He’s our guy now and for the next 8 years. And I’ll root for Freddie wherever he lands. I hope both win the MVP in their respective leagues. And I hope the Braves defeat Freddie’s AL team in the World Series.

Now, bring me Michael Conforto for LF. Seriously. Many think he’ll take a 1-year “pillow” contract ala Josh Donaldson. AA is the master of such deals.

    Imagine:
    Acuña, RF (R)
    Olson, 1B (L)
    Riley, 3B (R)
    Conforto, LF (L)
    Ozuna, DH (R)
    Albies, 2B (S)
    Duvall, CF (R)
    d’Arnaud, C (R)
    Swanson, SS (R)

Balanced and dangerous. Do I want Duvall in CF all the time? Not necessarily. But the I gave you the available LH CFs yesterday. I’ll live with Duvey in CF.

I get the emotional reaction to Freddie’s departure, but it’s perfectly fine to miss Freddie and embrace Olson. It’s possible. I promise.

This really wasn’t Alex choosing Olson over Freddie. It was Freddie not signing and Alex making a move so that he could move on with constructing the roster. Freddie wasn’t ready to make a deal. He still hasn’t, right? How many players have already come off the board? I don’t know about you, but I would not like this team if we waited for Freddie and missed out on everyone else.

In my opinion… OPINION, Freddie’s agent miscalculated his strategy. We’ll have to see what Freddie eventually gets, but it appears the agent has him holding out for something he may not get. Local beat writers opine that he had 5 yrs / $145M on the table. That’s an AAV of $29M. That was Freddie’s choice.

With this 8-yr / $168M deal, which will vault the Braves from #12 in payroll to somewhere around #7 depending on the rest of Alex’s work, I think its unfair to continue to characterize Liberty Media as cheap. V, here’s the thing, and no offense please, and it certainly not you alone, but… half the fans seem willing to forget there ever was a Freddie Freeman on the team, and the trade was about 36 hours ago or so, and. I’m just not wired like that , the body isn’t even cold yet.

I had basically planned on giving up on baseball this year if the strike dragged on too long, then there was the good news of the deal, then FF gone.

He as much as any baseball player can deserve his salary, deserves to be paid what the back of his baseball card says he should be paid. The Dude didn’t demand to be traded when the whole team was traded around him. He was getting probably 8-10 million less than he should have the last 4-5 years and I guarantee you Thoppy the lucky , was trying to sign him on the cheap, just like he did with Ozzie and Acuna. And he deserved to be the next Chipper, but Liberty and Thoppy are cheap, no doubt about it. Not Reds/Marlins cheap, but cheap.

Jim Bowden (who thought FF was 5 years older than Olson) and , I for the life of me can’t think of the little draft twerp at ESPN (who about peed in his pants for Joc Peterson to get to the bigs, cuz he was such an amazing Center fielder!!! ) like the deal and look at the boutique stats and announce Matt Olson is FF or better Bull…poop.

am I biased a bit? sure…but….stats those dopes don’t care about…matter. FF has a career BA 43 points higher than Olson!!! But, hey, that doesn’t matter, right? Hey, what about OBP? the “experts” care about that ,right? Olson, .348, FF, .384. Facts, are facts.
in 2020, Olson played all 60 games (like FF) and hit… .195 for the year. That, should worry folks., part of a season or not… FF, who I seem to recall was bit beat up to start that year, hit .341.

One reason FF didn’t drive in as many runs as Olson, is he was batting 2nd for a good chunk of the year (He’d even play 3rd , even though he’s one of the best 1st baseman in baseball, a true team player) he did lead the league in runs scored though.

But, the biggest thing to me is Olson doesn’t hit in the clutch like Freddie has, and that’s a real problem. Hopefully, he will get better here with more guys on base (esp if/when Ronald comes back) but right now, he’s not Freddie at the plate.

So, liberty and Thoppy in particular can sprain their elbows patting themselves on the back about having another 10 mil to spend (or save) a year and not risk FF being just average at the end of his contract (boy, if Olson, iwth a much shorter track record, comes down to earth in a few years like MANY a 1st baseman has, oh well, got him cheap, amirite?)

Am I going to root for the braves? of course I am! Am I going to hope Olson hits 50 HR’s this year, and makes me eat crow? of course! But, if the .252 lifetime hitter hits that or less in a new league/team this year, and leaves a ton of runners on ala Mark Texiera…well…

and even though the experts that likely never even played little league baseball, say that Olson is equal to or better than FF at 1st based on some stupid metrics are wrong… (Olson may have a bit more range, but we will quickly find out if he can do the splits, and save Riley, Ozzie and Dansby 10 errors each.)…

time will indeed tell, but all I know are the facts…one first baseman is hall of fame bound when his career ends, a great average hitter, and clutch hitter when the games on the line, the guy you want up there. and a fan favorite, was a great personality (Can’t judge Olson from one press conference, but he seems personality challenged, hopefully it was just nerves) the other guy…is a very good power hitter that doesn’t hit for much average….but, he’s younger AND cheaper, yay!

Prove me wrong in September (November?) kid….

    Quick thoughts on Collin McHugh…

He essentially replaces Chris Martin, except with better stuff. We already had a stout bullpen, but it was a little LH heavy. McHugh helps balance that out. Not a hard thrower with a 91-mph 4-seamer, but batters hit just .177 against his devastating slider which is his gravy pitch. He also mixes in a cutter which keeps batters from sitting on either. Really, he is a near perfect fit for our pen. Kudos for the work from AA here.

Granted, he had a legendary half season and playoff run that far exceeded his career up to that point. But that doesn’t mean he can’t still be a very solid player in the lineup. Not completely sold on Alex Dickerson as the lone LH on the bench, but at least there’s a LH on the bench now. Joc would still be a nice addition. Starting pitching is less of a “need”, but would sure be nice. If I had to choose, I’d take another big bat and bank on the crop of young arms that have all come up together to fill the remaining 2 spots – Tucker Davidson, Kyle Wright, Kyle Muller, Huascar Ynoa.

In fact, Ronnie will be on the IL for the first month and maybe 2. There is still the need for 1 more OF to fill out the roster for that period at least. So I guess that does still come under the heading of “need”.

Well, Joc has landed in San Fran so he’s out of the picture. I like the signings so far understanding that at least a couple of them – Dickerson and Thornburg – are mainly just depth. Neither are guaranteed a roster spot. I still believe we have a real need for another OF, but there is some sentiment that Alex might be finished with the heavy lifting. I’m just not sure how that leaves our bench… and for that matter how that leaves us prior to Ronnie returning. I’m hoping he can pull one more rabbit out of his wallet before we take the lid off the modified Grapefruit League schedule tomorrow.

Well, Freddie finally got his 6th year from the Dodgers. This morning’s reports all pretty much agree that the Dodgers, Rays and Braves were all on the table with strong 5 year deals. In fact, some outlets hint that Tampa was really aggressive with their offer. In the end, it took the Dodgers breaking from their norm and adding that 6th year to get over the hump. Congrats to Freddie. I truly hope that he lives up to the entire 6 years of his contract. I really do. Just not against the Braves. 😉

FWIW, old friend Julio Teheran is tossing a showcase today. There are supposed to be around 10-12 teams attending. Wonder if the Braves are one of them? If he looks healthy, he might be a cheap option to come in and provide some veteran innings. As we all have learned, you can never have too many starting pitchers.

“It was the principle of the thing”…

How many times in our lives have we made what turned out to be foolish decisions over that very sentiment… Heck, I was once out on strike for 6 months over a nickel an hour.

Fortunately for me, I had other marketable skills and kept on working in a different job.

So, the king is dead, long live the king. Freddie will add a bit of class to the Dodger locker room.

I did not realize until last night that Joc opted out of a $10 million dollar contract with the Braves to take a 2.5 million dollar buy out from the Braves thinking I guess he would get more on the open market. Signs for $6 million to play for his hometown Giants. (Maybe explains the pearls methinks) but… I digress.

Yes, for some reason the Braves still feel somewhat light… A solid centerfielder would help. Still early, I guess we will just have to wait an see who gets released by the other 29.

I get a sense that Freddie may have really just wanted to be in LA and close to his home. I know he has a house in the Atlanta area, but SoCal is home, and his kids are a huge part of his life. And that’s cool… I respect it. If not he probably would have not taken this thing all the way to FA anyway. Alex catches the heat for “not getting a deal done” last spring, but it does take 2 to tango. In fact, I’ll bet you here alot about “home” in his introduction presser in Dodgerland today.

I know I keep beating this drum, but we simply do not have a real CF on the roster outside of Guillermo Heredia. Is Alex comfortable with Heredia in CF every day until Ronnie returns? That certainly looks like the best option right now. But then what is left for the bench? Manny Piña and Orlando Arcia are pretty much locks at backup C and Util respectively. But then what? Alex Dickerson? He’s not even guaranteed his contract. But that’s just 3. Who’s the last bat on the bench? With Ronnie opening the year on the IL, all signs point to Travis Demeritte being the last guy on the bench. I gotta be honest… I hate that. I don’t just dislike it, I hate it. He’s not a ML’er. He’s a AAAA all-or-nothing hitter. I just don’t see a rosy picture here unless A) Alex still has one more move to make, or B) Drew Waters shocks the world in Spring Training and makes the team. I give the odds of Alex bringing in another OF at less than 50%. I give Waters less than that. I believe we are incomplete and I don’t like it.

well, FF wanted a 6th year and Lucky Thoppy didn’t want to do that. I think FF felt after being “underpaid” , and putting up with the rebuilding, a 6 year contract wasn’t crazy (how many years are the Phils stuck with Bryce?)
I am sure FF could have gotten 3 years 120 if he really wanted to play for the Yanks or Red Sox. (I mean, if Scherzer , 38 in July is worth that, surely FF is?)
You are right V, likely wanted to be home, if the right deal wasn’t available here.

“I know I keep beating this drum, but we simply do not have a real CF on the roster outside of Guillermo Heredia. Is Alex comfortable with Heredia in CF every day until Ronnie returns? ”

Well, he played a ton last year,(just checked baseball reference, 108 games in CF, and started…81, really?) and I am sure Thoppy is just fine with him there. Duvall really impressed me …I don’t care that he’s 33 and not built like a CF’er, he can play there..at least a few times a week.

    Alex Dickerson?

V, I think you are being too hard on him (unless he is starting all the time) just so-so last year, but in 2020 , in 151 AB’s 10 HRs and .298 .371. so, seems fine for a bench player

I’m ok with Rosario , and I don’t even know why. (.309 lifetime OBP) He like Duvall, never walks…how many guys like that can you have in the same lineup these days? I am really hoping he’s one of those guys that tears the cover off the ball at his home park, and loves playoff type atmosphere games.

I always hear teams have to try to improve after getting to/winning the W.S. Other than the bullpen, I just don’t see it. At best Olson is the same as FF. offensively.

Hopefully, the Mutts are only better on paper…

LOL… For some reason I would feel better if all the pundits were predicting the Braves to finish fourth in the division again instead of first. Los Bravos always seem to play better after getting disrespected.

Now I remember the real value of spring training baseball games, I got a solid 2 hour nap this afternoon watching a bunch of minor league players from the Twins get routed by a like number of minor leaguers from the Red Sox.

Do not expect any major league talent to play for at least another week.

Money or fame? Great choice for Soler. I suspect Atlanta is much more likely to return to the WS than the Padres but the Fathers have a greater need with Tatis out for 3 months. Then again, Soler’s bat fits nicely with the Braves with the absence of Acuna for the first two months. All that said, I have no idea of how to handicap potential salaries for major league ball players any more.

No doubt the Braves could afford him, no doubt he would be cheaper than Ozuna, still of unknown quality both on and off the field. One has to wonder who will emerge as the clubhouse leader with Freddie gone.

everything is confusing! MLBTR was acting like well the outfield is set, (Ozuna Duvall, Rosario) and Acuna will be the DH for awhile, then go back to the outfield (CF, which he clearly isn’t as good as a right fielder?)
Adam Duvall did lead the league in RBI’s , can’t really platoon him , unless he gets off to a slow start .
I remember hearing Rosario was a pretty good outfielder, showed a very good arm, but looked a bit lost out there in…whatever the parks called these days. Perhaps the lights, new park for him, was the issue. Remember when he beat out an infield hit in the playoffs, and it was about as fast as anyone got down to first all year long?
a rotating CF’er? Would Acuna be less likely to run at weird angles in CF and injure himself for a year?

The $64,000 question is this, who will emerge as the Braves real centerfielder this season? A player yet to be acquired maybe? We all know what a truly great centerfielder looks like don’t we?

Drew Waters has the potential, also Harris. Sigh, we will just have to see how it all plays out. I am pretty sure Hoppy will pull someone out of his butt before all is said and done.

Michael Harris II is the CF (and star) of the future, but he’ll need another year before he’s ready. Waters needs to prove he can make consistent contact at the plate. It’s a big year for him.

Eddie Rosario is an adequate fielder, but he’s no Gold Glover. He’s no Marcell Ozuna either. He can get the job done out there though. Adam Duvall can handle CF, but its not ideal. Unfortunately, there isn’t an ideal choice for CF. Ronnie is certainly capable, but I don’t think you want him back in CF coming of the ACL injury.

Honestly I’m not even looking at this from the perspective of having Ronnie back because he’s not going to be in the field until late May at the earliest anyway. So when he returns, you make the necessary adjustment. But until then, you still have to field a team that isn’t gonna lose the division in April/May.

So the choices as the roster currently stands are:
Rosario, Heredia, Duvall (Heredia doesn’t start on a contending team)
Ozuna, Duvall, Rosario (a pitcher’s nightmare)
Dickerson, Duvall, Rosario (still a nightmare)

… or you pick up another OF. Because until Ronnie returns, your 5 options for 4 OF/DH spots are Duvall, Rosario, Ozuna, Heredia, and Dickerson. OF those 5, realistically only Duvall and Heredia are viable out of LF. And I can live with Heredia and Dickerson on the bench, but not in the starting lineup.

So for the sake of argument, let’s just say we start Rosario, Heredia, Duvall left to right across the OF, with Ozuna at DH. That leaves just Dickerson on the bench with Piña (C) and Arcia (Util). You still have to find another body somewhere. If you stick to who is currently on the 40-man roster, the OF candidates are Drew Waters and Travis Demeritte. Off the 40-man you might consider IF Braden Shewmake, who has played almost exclusively at SS in the minors, or journeyman IF Ryan Goins. But both those guys are lefties and wouldn’t real match up well with fellow lefty Dickerson.

In a dream world, prospect Drew Waters would have such a good spring that he’d have to make the team. He’s a perfectly capable CF with all the tools. Realistically Waters still needs a little more time in the oven to cut down on the strikeouts though, so such a scenario is doubtful.

There is a big part of me that wishes the A’s would have taken Waters over Pache, but I think they also wanted an OF that could be ready to go on Opening Day.

The reasonable response here is for Alex to just pick up another OF. And since there simply are no good CF choices available anymore, moving toward RF Soler is probably the best remaining option… if he can afford it.

Today’s lineup to lift the lid on the 2022 Grapefruit League season:

    SS Arcia
    2B Albies
    1B Olson
    LF Ozuna
    CF Duvall
    C Contreras
    3B Goins
    RF Waters
    DH Demeritte

    RHP Elder

I believe it is quite telling that Duvall is starting in CF over Waters. That means he’s gonna get alot of time there this spring to be ready to play there for real when the games actually count. I imagine Demeritte will get alot of AB’s this spring as well since he’s a bench possibility.

except for some interesting team bios and a few player bios, no real reason to watch MLBTV, just out of the habit. Then, when I think about it, mainly ball games on the channel. So, decided to record the hot stove show this am….a few tidbits.
one, the weirdest one, they were talking to Jon Heyman about the best lineups in the game (Dodgers first, Harold, the other guy Matt something and John all agree it’s the Dodgers, then the Jays) braves came in 3rd…ok, but they show batting 8th and 9th…Drew Waters and Heredia…Huh? that doesn’t even begin to make sense. did someone set that this lineup graphic up before Rosario re-signed?

Heyman, earlier in the show mentioned that apparently, Freddie’s reps asked for 6 years 175 Mil, or 5 years, 165 Mil. the braves were firm, 5 years, 140 Mil. Amazingly, just read the Rays were offering 150 mil, but apparently for 6 years?

there was something else I heard that was interesting, but darned if I can remember it….

As far as the contract offers from Atlanta, it’s been pretty much corroborated that the initial extension offer last spring was for 5 yrs / $135M. Before the lockout began, the Braves pushed it up to 5 yrs / $140M. Freddie himself said that there was no contact between the team and himself during the lockout. When it ended, Alex reiterated that the offer was still on the table. He also reiterated that it would not go to 6 years. Freddie’s camp dug in on 6. It’s really that simple.

Now Heyman… I do not believe he has a clue to any specifics from the Braves side. He could not have gotten the numbers from Alex’s office, which is locked down tighter than the formula for Coca Cola. Unless Freddie’s agent leaked the specifics to him, unlikely, he’s making it up like most “journalism” these days.

    Hmmm
still wonder if CF would be safer for Acuna, he tries so hard out there, wouldn’t have blown out his knee if he wasn’t going all out…hard to balance playing hard vs getting injured. Remember Fred Lynn?

Well, I can’t find a link to it right now. Chipper said Freddie told him a couple of weeks ago that he couldn’t imagine playing for any other team, but wanted that 6th year and felt he could get it if he waited long enough. Chipper said he told Freddie that he was “playing a dangerous game”. He told him if he wanted to stay in Atlanta then he needed to think of that first, not the money or the years. He pretty much defended Alex and made out that Freddie (or his agent) made a huge mistake and realized it when Alex pivoted to Matt Olson. There was alot more, but those are big parts.

Heredia’s primary role is cheerleader. The little guy has some pop in his bat but it is tough when you don’t play every game and don’t get three at bats against a starter to push your average over .250.

Still reeling a bit with the Jensen signing. I truly did not see that one coming.

Remember me talking about the radio interview with Chipper about the Freddie situation? Here are the highlights from the interview, with alot of commentary. The host alludes tp the agents trying to get the max for themselves rather than looking out for Freddie. It certainly could be taken that way. Another shocking revelation here is the way the deferrals are built into Freddie’s deal. They can be voided? I’ve never heard of that. I think Freddie got screwed and that his Dodger deal benefits his agent more than it benefit Freddie. You judge for yourselves…

None of this has made very much sense unless you come to the conclusion that Freddie’s agents were just trying to max out their own personal percentage. I believe they did overplay their hand, not fully understanding how quickly the market would move after the lockout ended, and forced Alex into a corner with their unreasonable ultimatum. As for Alex, he had a Plan B in place and executed it, which left Freddie out in the cold. I truly believe this all happened outside Freddie’s full knowledge. I feel for him as I don’t think he would have personally wanted it to go down this way.

    Now stuff, but closely related…

The Atlanta Falcons, who have a way of shooting themselves in the foot constantly, totally screwed themselves over and isolated their long time QB and leader with the failed pursuit of Deshawn Watson. BTW, had that pursuit been successful, that would have also been disastrous because of the exorbitant draft cost for a team with many, many needs. I don’t know how one organization can step on so many land mines that they themselves pave planted… but they do.

So within just a few days of Freddie Freeman exiting Atlanta, it appears that 14 year Falcon QB and fan favorite Matt Ryan is also out the door with multiple sources reporting that a trade to the Colts is in the final stages.

First, I am thrilled for Matt Ryan. He’s a total class act who has spent way too much time on his backside behind the turnstile a/k/a the Falcons line. He’s going to a team that is loaded and just needs a competent QB. I hope he wins a title there.

Second, I am thrilled for Indianapolis. Their “succession plan” to Peyton Manning was Andrew Luck, a tremendously talented QB who suffered career ending injuries way to young into his NFL career. They’ve scrambled ever since. Ryan will be the perfect fit for them and they will love him. I may buy some Colts swag. Seriously, I might.

Third, I’m not sure what Atlanta will do when the trade is finalized because they don’t have a NFL level QB on the roster. But no matter what they do to try to put on a band-aid, they’ll screw that up too. It’s just what they do. Around these parts we refer to that as Falconing. And nobody Falcons like the Falcons. Their track record of Falconing is unparalleled.

Matty Ice, you are a legend and a future HOF’er. I hope you get that ring in Indy.

Adnan Ikic, writer for The Falcoholic:

[Matt] Ryan finishes out his career as a Falcon owning every single major passing record there is to possess. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and became the only Falcon ever to win the NFL’s Most Valuable Player Award, in 2016.

Before Ryan entered the fray as the number three overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Falcons had never even enjoyed back to back winning seasons since their inception in 1966. Ryan’s Falcons immediately had four consecutive such seasons upon his arrival.

In the 42 years before Ryan, the Falcons had won their division three times and had made the playoffs eight times. In Ryan’s 14 years, Atlanta matched those three division crowns and appeared in the postseason six times.

Matt Ryan is the most successful quarterback in Falcons history, and I would argue is the greatest Falcon ever. He changed the trajectory of the Falcons and made them relevant, after four decades spent largely in the wilderness with flashes of great success with Chris Chandler and Michael Vick at the helm. Today is the end of an era.

Two legends have departed the city. One organization tried to do everything right. One tried to do everything wrong. Amazing.

I really don’t follow football (Used to have to , to get baseball info during the winter via ESPN) but the dude is basically a serial rapist, and like the killer Gov of New York, (who at the very least also fondled a few women against their will) Bill Cosby, was somehow able to get away with it. The stench if that ass had taken over as the QB, the Falcons would never be about to wash off.

Charlie will be ready for the lid lifter; Max is the ace and could get Opening Day nod; Ian Anderson is solid at #3. There is also Huascar Ynoa who was All-Star worthy last season until he got into a fight with a stationary object. Past that, you have 3 youngsters with ML starts under their belts in Tucker Davidson, Kyle Muller and Kyle Wright, any and all of whom could well take the next step forward.

I believe that Alex wanted (still wants) to add another veteran starter but couldn’t find a match in the market. I also believe that’s probably why he has built the bullpen as heftily as he has done because we know these guys rarely get past the 6th inning. But with that mighty pen, opposing teams better get their business done early.

Opener? Don’t be surprised if we see that early and often this year. Colin McHugh may have been acquired for just that role. I heard a great argument for that concept a few days ago that teams are wanting their best pitchers (a/k/a their starters) later in the games when things are tighter and more stressful. And since those pitchers don’t go as far into games anymore, managers are just pushing their entrances back until the 3rd or 4th innings. It’s a little hard to argue that the leverage is a little higher the 3rd and 4th times through the lineup as opposed to the 1st time through.

That’s one of the many things that made Greg Maddux such a great pitcher. He never pitched to the same batter the same way twice in the same game. He was a different pitcher in the 6th inning than he was in the 1st or 2nd.

I know, it is not the same as UGA winning nor the Braves WS championship but it is all about the love of the game. RMC is about 10 miles from me in the little town of Ashland VA.

Interesting excerpts from a new Tim Tucker (AJC) article that just dropped talking about the Braves new payroll stance…

Despite not re-signing franchise icon Freddie Freeman, the Braves committed $212 million to four players last week, including $44 million in 2022 salaries.

The spending spree on trade acquisition Matt Olson and free agents Kenley Jansen, Eddie Rosario and Collin McHugh put the Braves’ projected opening-day payroll at approximately $173 million, pending further transactions, according to calculations by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

That’s up 33% from $130 million at the start of last season and up 17% from $148 million at the end of last season. It’s the highest payroll in franchise history and likely will rise higher with additional moves before or during the season.

With the new spending, the Braves at the moment rank eighth among the 30 MLB teams in payroll, up from 13th at the end of last season. The Braves currently rank third among the five NL East teams in payroll, behind the Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies. Both of those teams have had spending sprees of their own.

I don’t believe Alex is done either. Most outlets believe he’s still searching for an additional starter, and we all know he likes to hold some back for adding at the trade deadline.

I believe we have to leave the old narrative of Liberty being cheap. It would appear that the suit wearing powers that be understand you have to spend money to make money, and they made plenty on 2021. From the outside, it looks like the strategy was for the corporation’s initial investments to lean more toward the infrastructure than the product. But with their Battery projects well in place and generating plenty of revenue, the beneficiary now becomes the team itself.

It’s funny… when Arthur Blank bought the Falcons and invested heavily in the team, people around this town screamed from the rooftops for him to buy the Braves as well and save us from corporate ownership. As the last few years have unfolded, the Braves have looked almost like a model franchise while the Falcons have become an NFL dumpster fire. Amazing.

I can live with the current spending parameters. I do not look at total commitment as a real thing. That cost is spread out. What hurts is when you spend $50 MM on an unproven rookie who may or may not work out.
      Yes, that has happened…

Amazing the Braves have weathered the penalties inflicted by MLB for things that were and were not of their making. Not being able to fully enter the international market will hurt but the lifting of the All-star game was a farce and in my opinion they owe Atlanta a make up game.

    More stuff…

As time has gone by and the reality of the Matt Ryan trade has had time to settle, it’s a weird stage of emotions. Yesterday I was just mad that the trade happened the way that it did. The Falcons bungled that as bad as anything I’ve ever seen in sports. I realized and had even advocated that Matt Ryan should be traded to a contending team for one more shot at a ring. At the least he needed to be traded just to save his own hide. He seemed to be on his backside more than he was on his feet in 2021 because the Falcons O-line ranked 27 out of 32 and most of the year looked worse than that.

Today is more melancholy. Ryan was more than just the 14 year franchise QB and “face of the Falcons”. He was the Falcons. He was the lone beacon of competence in an otherwise incompetent franchise. He was the one guy that I knew could and would take a beating, get up and still take it hard every offensive snap of the game. He never complained, and he never called a teammate out in public… rather in private when it meant something. He was the the perfect example of a leader that could inspire an otherwise lackluster group into believing they belonged on the field with teams with far superior talent. The fact that they won 7 games last season is a testament to Ryan’s talent and leadership. They were a 4 win team at best… and probably closer to 3.

The Atlanta Falcons lost more than a QB with yesterday’s trade. They lost a heartbeat. And to a certain degree, the city did as well. No one on that team should ever wear the No. 2 ever again. Ever.

Here’s my assessment of the rotation to start the season:

While I believe Alex is still looking for another veteran starter, there isn’t anything of real value remaining in FA. Will someone come available toward the end of spring training? Possibly, but can a guy that didn’t make another club come in and help our club? Meh…

Could Alex still make a trade? I think that’s more likely than a FA signing, but I’m not sure that we have the prospect capital left to make a meaningful deal, and even if we did can we afford to let it get away now?

To me there’s a much greater chance we roll into Opening Day with the group we have right now. And I’m actually OK with that. Let’s examine…

We know we have a top 3 of Max Fried, Charlie Morton, and Ian Anderson. And that top 3 may be as good as any in baseball, at least in the top tier. I think Kyle Wright is ready to take the next step. Will he get the opportunity? Typically I would say that we need to see more in spring, but with the abbreviated camp you have to also take a little bit of last season into account. And last season, Snit thought enough of him to trust him with some very important innings in the World Series. Unless he gets hurt or just plain looks awful over the next couple of weeks, I think he gets one of the remaining 2 spots.

Also garnering consideration should be Tucker Davidson. Using the same logic of the short spring, Davidson was very good at times in his time in ATL. Until he got hurt he definitely showed he belonged. He was a little slower coming back, but was good enough to also be trusted in the World Series. I think he has a great shot at #5.

I also believe the big lefty Kyle Muller has a shot at #5. This is a pitcher for whom I have banged the drum for a long time. I think he’ll be a very good middle of the rotation starter for a long time. The only question for him is if he’s truly ready. He probably will benefit from an impressive spring more than the other candidates if he can show some consistency. And if Snit opts for a 6-man rotation, which seems likely, Muller could be the #6 guy.

The other thought here is that if Huascar Ynoa is healthy (Bowman has written that Ynoa is still slowed by last season’s shoulder ailment), then he has to be considered as well. He is a perfect example of the new era of pitchers that great primary stuff, so-so secondary stuff, and can’t get through a lineup the 3rd time around. But he’s also a great candidate to be a piggy back pitcher to get you 3 or 4 strong opening innings before another guy come in to bridge to the back of the bullpen. Is that other guy Collin McHugh? Why not? Those guys profile pretty well into a piggy-back combo.

So if I had to rank their chances today, I’d say that the rotation will come out as Fried, Morton, Anderson, Wright, and Muller/Davidson being the 5th & 6th starters for the first few of times through the rotation. Remember, they play 14 straight to open the season, including a West Coast flight. We don’t have the typical built in off days like seasons past. And if we get past game 14 with both Tuck and Muller being effective, maybe Snit keeps the line going for a while longer.

Anyway, I think that’s what we’ll see as the lid comes off this 2022 edition of Braves baseball.

    Braves beat writer Justin Toscano:

Bally has announced its Braves broadcast team for 2022. Chip Caray returns as the PxP man, and will be primarily joined by Jeff Francoeur. Paul Byrd, Brian Jordan and Peter Moylan will have expanded roles as in-game analysts.

Carey/Frenchy/Byrd are pretty good. Byrd is underrated. I personally find Jordan annoying, but that’s just me. Moylan has been pretty good on the postgame show.

Kelly Crull returns as the reporter. Nick Green returns as an analyst on Braves Live. Treavor Scales and Gordon Beckham join the broadcast group. Scales will host Braves Live, while Beckham will be an analyst on it.

Crull is passable, but will never be as good as Kelsey Wingert. The others are fine.

Tom Glavine was not included in a release announcing the Braves broadcast team for 2022.

That’s a shame. His insight will be missed. Jordan will not replace it as he’s just a gloried cheerleader. Hopefully Moylan can take up some of the slack.

Yesterday’s game was televised, and I tried to watch a little of it as I worked. Takeaways:

Austin Riley looks locked in already.
Dansby hit the ball a very long way.
Kyle Wright looks like he wants to be in the rotation.
AJ Minter has a nasty breaking pitch.
Marcell Ozuna should have his glove confiscated.
Vaughn Grissom is the next hitting prospect to keep an eye on.
Spencer Strider’s fast rise last season was not a fluke. Don’t sleep on him either.

MLBTR has a nice arb tracker, sorting out the players and showing their service time along with the player / team / midpoint figures. Below are the remaining 5 Braves, most of any ML team:

    Adam Duvall, 5.151 yrs (Arb 4), $10.275M / $9.275M / $9.775M
    Dansby Swanson, 5.047 yrs (Arb 4), $10.000M / $9.200M / $9.600M
    Luke Jackson, 5.019 yrs (Arb 4), $4.000M / $3.600M / $3.800M
    Max Fried, 3.148 yrs (Arb 2), $6.850M / $6.600M / $6.725M
    Austin Riley, 2.138 yrs (Super 2), $4.200M / $3.950M / $4.075M

As you can see, the two sides are quite close on each player. The Braves are traditionally a “file and trail” team, meaning once the deadline passes (Tuesday) and the arb figures are filed with the league office, all negotiations are off except for those involving long term deals. There is some sentiment that the Braves will entertain continuing negotiations even on 1-year deals this year given the abbreviated period caused by the lockout, and the fact that this year the arb hearings will occur during the regular season.

One might reason that the Braves would be looking to lock up their ace Maxie, but with 2 more arb cycles remaining after this one, they might hold off another year. Same with Riley. The biggest question comes with Dansby. If they let his final arb cycle ride out, is that an indication that they’re prepared to let him walk in FA at season’s end? The organization loves Vaughn Grissom who ought to be a big riser in the next round of prospect rankings, but he’s never played above high-A and should start this season at AA Mississippi. Even if he merits a mid-season bump to AAA, he won’t really be a serious candidate for ATL until 2024. His bat is pretty advanced but still needs time to fully develop… look no further than incumbent SS Dansby Swanson for a perfect example of that.

should not have overlooked Braden Shewmake, who could very well be a ML regular in nest season if he puts together a solid season at AAA this year. This is a kid with occasional power but very good bat-to-ball skills who is “a very instinctive defender with great hands and an above-average arm. It’s not flashy, but he makes all the plays”. This will be an interesting year for SS in Braves-land.

On the topic of SS, we should all go back and look at Dansby’s production. He’s an interesting dude… and seemingly always under the microscope amongst us Braves fans. I believe its because he is such a streaky hitter. He may go 5 games in a row with a big hit or HR, then strike out 8 times in a row. But he’s a better defender than he gets credit for and is the consummate “gamer” who just has those special baseball instincts that you can’t just work on and learn. He also meshes so well with Ozzie around the keystone.

I do have to wonder what the team would look like with a different SS on the field. I think if he’d take a 2 or 3 year deal at about $13M / yr, the organization would like to keep him around. But if his dollar demands are higher, then perhaps the Braves might look for more bang for the buck. I think it’s also worth noting that he shares the same agency as Freddie Freeman. Wonder if they’ve learned anything about Alex?

Oh… and Trea Turner hits FA after this season. Is it wrong to drool over another teams player? Is that disloyal?

Translation on Contreras playing RF/2B/3B: From what I’ve read today, they really like his bat alot (he hit a towering oppo bomb in today’s game) and regard his batting skills as way ahead of his receiving skills. Thus, they believe he can help the team with his bat sooner than with his catcher’s mitt. I could see him in the OF this season… after all, we’ve got Marcell Ozuna and Eddie Rosario lumbering around out there. Contreras can’t be much worse defensively.

Seriously, Rosario is not a great OF. If you can stash him in LF with a good CF next to him, you can get by. If he’s your RF with Ozuna in left, you have major issues, especially since you don’t have a real CF on the roster. You can pretty much insert Alex Dickerson into that statement as well.

If we can get to early May (that’s the new optimistic timetable for Ronald Acuña’s return to the OF), then we’ll be OK. But that first month might be a circus out in the grass.

I thought the same thing about why Contreras was playing right field, they want to be able to get him more at bats. Okay, works for me. You only get to DH one guy at a time.

It is really tough handicapping players via spring training stats. Too many variables to consider. For the most part, it’s out scrubs are better than your scrubs.

Tyler Ballsack really is better than what he showed today. Must be working on a pitch. That said, Will Smith and Kenly Jansen look ready to go day one.

Walter Strider really impresses me. Most likely he will get sent to Gwinnett to start the season. I still expect a trade for an outfielder before the Braves break camp.

Kyle Wright looks to be on the edge of breaking through. He came up huge in the World Series, and he’s having a great Spring Training. He might finally realize that great potential we’ve all have seen in flashes. Or will he? Would you trade him right now for a viable CF? Or Tucker Davidson? Or Kyle Muller? Or Huascar Ynoa?

Spencer Strider is untouchable. His emergence might also be the reason we give up one of the above named hurlers for a current need.

Hey, I’m not saying who, just the what… and maybe when. I suspect there is still a possibility (maybe even a probability) an 11th hour deal might occur depending on who might become available on the waiver wire or who is released. As for who might be made available, our old friend Sean Newcomb might just be number one. No need to disperse any starting pitcher when relievers are the surplus on the Braves roster.

No, Sean won’t command a Soto but there might well be a proven centerfielder who can hit his weight.

Never lose sight of the need to have 7 major league level starters available at the beginning of the season. I think that along with the bullpen, the Braves can check that box.

No, it is just the lack of a real honest to goodness cernterfielder which looms large at this point but the Braves can probably limp along until mid season without it being a deal breaker.

We can all recognize the Braves will indeed lose 60 or so games this season as a given, Every team has at least one good starter and many have two. It is that 3-5 which are real problems for many teams. I think it is going to be interesting playing the Mets this season but they too have holes and despite have DeGrom and Scherzer, who the Braves have shown they can beat, it is their 4 and 5 guys who will be their Achilles heel.

With all due respect to Guillermo Heredia, I just can’t get past the fact that we don’t have a starting CF. I appreciate Heredia as a bench piece, indeed an important one. And he’s great with a pair of plastic swords. But he cannot be a starter for any length of time. Can he stand in the gap (literally) for the entire month of April? Ehhhhhh… I’m not so sure. But I just cannot think that an OF of Ozuna/Duvall//Rosario is going to drive in more runs than they allow. Ew. I think as things stand today, I’d prefer Rosario/Heredia/Duvall. I’m sure the pitchers would prefer that as well.

I just read an article somewhere opining that the Braves should extend Dansby Swanson to “stabilize” the infield going forward. I won’t talk too deeply on that article, but I will share my opinion on the topic.

There are a couple of surrounding circumstances that we need to take note of up front. First, the Braves’ current #6 and #7 prospects are both SS, those being Braden Shewmake and Vaughn Grissom. While Shewmake might be a ML regular one day, he’s most likely headed more toward a utility role. Valuable yes, but probably not going to motivivate the Braves front office to make room for him. Second, Grissom will likely move up in the rankings when they are next adjusted… possibly as high as #3 behind Michael Harris II and Spencer Strider (or even #2 if Strider spends enough of time on the ML roster). But Grissom hasn’t played above high-A ball and isn’t realistically projected until 2024. The thing, though, to remember about Grissom is that it’s his bat that ranks him so high. He’s a “solid” defender at SS, but not spectacular. And as he continues to grow into his “man weight”, he may grow out of SS anyway.

So now that I have that out of the way, let’s refocus on Dansby himself. If you just look at the data, Dansby ranks right about 15-16 out of 30 ML starting SS. Honestly, nobody saw him hitting 27 HR prior to last season, and nobody thinks he’ll repeat that feat. The thing that most people relate to Dansby is how he’ll go through extended cold streaks filled with K’s. Personally I think that’s a little overblown. When I look at Dansby, I see a guy that can hurt you with his bat at any time so you can’t take him lightly. I also see a guy that makes more plays in the field than he gets credit for. He’s not flashy like Andrelton Simmons, but he makes all the plays he should make and plenty that he shouldn’t. He also does things with pure baseball instinct that many players can’t… and you can’t just teach that.

The other thing that we need to give to Dansby is that he is the de facto leader of this team now. With Freddie Freeman moving on, Dansby is now the longest tenured Brave. Hard to believe, but its true. And if you don’t think the rest of the clubhouse won’t now default to him, you’re likely wrong.

Also, the rest of the IF is under contract through at least 2025… with Matt Olson wrapped up until 2028, Ozzie Albies having 2 team option years for 2026-2027, and Austin Riley in arb for 3 more years.

Is Dansby a 6 yr / $120m guy? Of course not. But he just might be a 4 yr / $60M guy. In this fan’s humble opinion, the Braves should extend him and keep him around for 3-4 more years. He’s not Trea Turner, but as Gil likes to say, somebody has to bat 9th.

V, I think Guillermo Heredia is going to come in during the 7th, 8th, 9th, with the occasional start. (he and Duval batting right handed , doesn’t help really) Or perhaps the reverse some days? Start off the game, then come out when a lefty comes in? I just don’t think Rosario, Duvall (the RBI leader last year) or Ozuna sit on the bench (Acuna will be the DH IF he’s healthy) Now, of course anyone gets injured…but that never happens, right? I mean, Guillermo Heredia had 26 doubles last year for some reason 😉

Bummer for Luke Jackson… torn/damaged UCL in his throwing arm. Likely a candidate for Tommy John surgery. Best estimate for recovery would be fall of 2023.

It is why when you hear the words “forearm tightness” the culprit is bum elbow… That said, it is often the shoulder which is responsible ultimately. I know, sounds crazy but my own experiences reveal that to me. Started when I was 14 and I could not throw a ball back to a pitcher without pain.

That pain persisted until I broke my arm at age 50 and had shoulder immobilize for 12 weeks. Pain has been gone ever since. But I digress… Bummer for Luke in his final year of arbitration. He best take the low ball offer.

Okay, a little disappointed with the results of last night’s game but as Bobby Cox once said after John Smoltz was blown out in a opener in Miami, “the commissioner called and said we still have to play the rest of the remaining 161″…

Honestly, Fried got dinked to death with an assortment of dying quails and Texas leaguers. A very mysterious strike zone didn’t help either.

The good news is Strider, the guy with the ’80s porn stash and Rollie Finger’s clone was absolutely lights out. Austin Riley put on a pretty good show too.

So, nowhere to go but up…

can you believe that I missed all but the last inning of the game? I had an issue with my “new” car (got back in August-Gil, I don’t think I have your number anymore after changing phones a way back, could you send it via fb messenger?) a 1976 Buick Electra. Put in a fuel pump with a friends help last Sat. and it was acting exactly the same as then, wouldn’t start, but some fuel poured down the carb, and it fired right up, then stalled. Thank God the Neighbor across the street mentioned the fuel filter…put a new one in last year, but…not sure how many years the car sat. Got it to start without the filter (Whine time, my back’s been bothering me for weeks, nothing like leaning over a car to fix a sore back 😆 ) so, went out to get a filter, then the store, ate dinner, Dad was watching Fox….and…after watching way more than I needed to (I mean, they try, but after you hear about the same story told 3-4 times) my brain says to myself, it says….HEY! Baseball! D’oh. so, got to see the last inning, by the new, low energy folks on ESPN (Edwardo Perez is the only decent one) meh. And I missed Strider? drat…

So, now you know why I talked about my car instead of baseball! 😉

Cool car. Something that happened to me when I bought a ’66 Triumph GT6 back in my skinnier days. The car had sat for some time and rust had developed in the gas tank. It too had a filter of sorts on the fuel pump (strainer) and a glass bowl. The first time it happened (car stalled) I noticed rust had accumulated in the bowl. Simple fix was to unscrew the bowl, dump out the rust and ta da… car ran for another undetermined amount of time as the rust never cleared up from the tank. Moral, as much as I hate to tell you but it is best to replace the tank. Not a fun job but having the same problem repeat itself is almost always guaranteed to occur at the most inopportune time. However, it could just be crude in the tank, only way to tell is to do a dissection of the fuel filter you removed.

One thing to add about the Triumph, the entire front end (hood and fenders) lifted out of the way to give one complete access to the motor. I think it was forethought because they knew someone would always need to have access to keep the dang thing running….

Wow, I wrote you a long reply and I have no idea of where it went. ????

If you were using an old MS Word program, the new version included in MS 11 is likely hiding it. I was using Office 2000 and new version (I did not want it) kept blocking me. I finally deleted the new Office program and my old files magically appeared.

I am using Apache Open Office (freeware) and I am very satisfied with it. My favorite was Corel Word Perfect because it was forward and backwards compatible but it got price too. I am cheap and because I use several different computers I like for all my programs to be compatible.

DuPont paid for me to learn how to use MicroSoft Office 20 years ago and I learned that if you know how to use one one program, you can figure them all out.

I miss Windows XL and Josie wishes she could go back to Windows 7…

Personally, I would rather have a Mac but like I said, I’m cheap (read fixed income) and with Biden inflation I am getting into a fix. But I digress…

Great to see Kyle Wright have a good first start (and Thoppy not going to his default mode of picking a veteren starter off the scrap heap hoping he turns it around) So many starters don’t figure it out til 26-27….

Olson seems to have, in a way, a similar ball spray pattern as FF. But, after seeing him get tossed out at home twice…I think Wash has to put the brakes on sending him unless the outfielder has no arm. FF was fast compared to Olson. Can’t wait to see Olson on the basepaths in 8 years, he might make Sid Bream seem fast 😆

Freddie did have an unusual gait for a big man. Give the Reds a little credit, they made two perfect relays to get him. Beat him by a half step both times. Good game last night though, Reds are much better than I thought they would be. Pitching will be their tell.

Good to see Ozuna hitting the ball well. I expect a few balls will leave the yard today with the temps rising. Sorry, 40 degrees is too cold to play baseball.

Well, because Huascar Ynoa wet the bed severely last night, the Braves are in a bit of a tight going into tonight’s game. Both of the 6th starter candidates – Tucker Davidson and Spencer Strider – had to bail the team out last night and there’s no one on the roster to pick up tonight’s innings. Snit said after the game that they would bring up 2 pitchers for tonight. That said, one of the new CBA rules throws a bit of a wrench in things.

Per Bowman: Minor League players on the 40-man roster were officially optioned on April 7 and must stay down 10 days unless replacing a player on the IL. So, w/ no apparent injuries, the Braves may need to create two 40-man spots.

If Ynoa is somehow deemed to be injured, there are 2 starting pitchers currently on the 40-man that could come up: Kyle Muller and Touki Toussaint. Muller. would be the ideal candidate except that he pitched yesterday. Touki? Uh… well, I suppose he’s a warm body anyway I don’t really want him starting though. Relievers currently on the 40-man include Dylan Lee and Jacob Webb.

If the Braves indeed create 1 or 2 40-man roster spots somehow, Bryce Elder could make his ML debut. If they “discover” an injury, Lee is likeliest to come up for the pen. My gut tells me Ynoa will have a “shoulder strain” and will be placed on the 10-day IL. I also believe someone hanging onto a 40-man and active roster spot might have both spots in danger. I hope Sean Newcomb hasn’t signed any long term leases or anything. I fear a DFA is in his near future.

Prediction: Newk is a goner; Ynoa is IL’d; Elder will make his ML debut and start tonight’s game; Lee will be in the pen.

Let’s see if Alex sees things my way.

To clarify, the Braves could simply send a couple guys down to AAA to make room for the 2 replacements, but that isn’t the optimal plan. If you demote Davidson, you can’t bring him back for 10 days. Ynoa does have an option remaining, so that’s a possibility if the truly want him to go down and work on something. But if they intend to keep him in the rotation, demoting him is not really a good option. I still think Newk is in the danger zone.

Ynoa needs additional development. He desperately needs a 3rd pitch. His fastball doesn’t move enough to allow him to live and die with it, and hitters just lay off the slider to sit on it. A good changeup could turn his career around.

No official word on any moves yet, but there is growing speculation that Bryce Elder will be added to the active and 40-man rosters to make tonight’s start. Sean Newcomb and Travis Demeritte are the 2 guys that could face DFA limbo to open the 40-man spot. Newk’s inclusion would simultaneously open the active roster spot as well.

I’m not yet clear on how they will add a second pitcher if they can’t yet recall players technically sent down on April 7 (new 10 day rule) unless someone is hurt (real or imagined). I could simply just not really understand that new rule clearly yet. I’ll bet it’s talked about alot today though and we are all a little better versed on it.

    Okay… clarity on the rule.

Teams can’t bring up anyone currently on their 40-man roster unless it’s to replace an injured player. 40-man roster players who began the season in minors can’t be recalled before April 17.

The rule says a player on the 40-man roster must remain in the minors for 10 days from being sent down. For the start of the season, April 7 is used as the pivotal date. Thus, Touki Toussaint and Dylan Lee are each ineligible to come up unless there is an injury resulting in a player being placed on the IL. Then a minor league player can be recalled inside that 10 day window.

I have read a couple of different places where the writers opine that both Newk and Demeritte could be DFA’d and that Elder and Brad Brach will be added and recalled. That is a very plausible scenario. Should they go that route, Tucker Davidson would likely be sent down to open the other active roster spot. That’s tough luck for big Tuck, who was not expecting to be inserted into last night’s game. In fact, I think alot of us are a little surprised that he was since he was scheduled to start tonight. Now the team is in a pinch without an available starter on the roster.

DOB spills the tea on Bryce Elder:

“Bryce Elder is a 5-pitch guy, a rarity these days, and plans to keep throwing all 5; says none is exceptional but all are good and helps make him effective. He was Braves minor league pitcher of the year in 2021 after posting a 2.75 ERA in 25 starts between High A, Double A and Triple A, with 155 Ks (57 BBs) in 137 2/3 IP. That included an impressive 2.21 ERA w/ 1 HR allowed in 7 Triple A starts.”

The 6’2″ 220 lb righty is the Braves #5 prospect behind Michael Harris II, Spencer Strider, Drew Waters, and Kyle Muller. His fastball typically sits around 92mph with “tilt”, and can reach 95 at times. But it plays faster because he mixes in his slider, curve and change at will. All 4 are considered plus pitches, but it’s his control that has catapulted him up the ranks and into his first ML start tonight. He can throw all his offerings for strikes and doesn’t walk the park as evidenced by his good K/BB noted above. (BTW, I’m not sure what the 5th pitch is that DOB talks about above.) He’s considered a “low ceiling/high floor” prospect that probably won’t be a top of the rotation guy but could have a long career as a #3 or #4. If he can throw strikes consistently in his debut tonight, he may not go back down.

I imagine the delay in announcing the 2nd pitching addition is trying to decide the best way to facilitate it. They either have to place someone (read: Huascar Ynoa) on the IL or they have to make room for another 40-man addition. I doubt Ynoa is actually hurt, well nothing more than his sore butt from the spanking he took last night, so placing him on the IL is risky business. Travis Demeritte might follow Chadwick Tromp into the DFA hinterlands.

I’m gonna add one more thought and then I’m gonna move on to tonight’s tilt.

Why is Sean Newcomb still here? He got shelled on Sunday and wasn’t even considered last night when you really needed innings from the pen. Because he was passed over, Snit had to tap his 6th starter. Newk’s role on this team is supposed to be to give Snit 6 or 9 outs when the starter has to leave early. If he can’t do that, then he’s wasting a roster spot IMO.

V, haven’t you noticed his modus operandi? (blog first?) He has 2, 3 good starts after coming up, convincing all of us he’s turned a corner 😛

I think, I hope…if it had been a normal off season, they would have traded Newcomb for, someone’s A ball prospect ….I agree with Newcomb, he’s a starter…the braves don’t think he is. So, they keep trying to make him a relief pitcher, but he walks too many folks…so, release him, and let some team put him in their rotation (if the Rays get him, expect him to win 15 game this year)

Sean Newcomb is the embodiment of many prospects these days. He tempts the scouts and execs with his “stuff”, but he can’t throw said stuff over the plate enough to get batters out consistently.

If he starts, he just walks more batters early. If he relieves, he hunkers down and throws his 2 main pitches with max effort and they flatten out. He has yet to prove that he can ever throw his pitches near the plate without placing it in the heart of the plate. And at 28 years old, he’s no longer a prospect… but a project. He’s just a middling veteran trying to hang on to his career.

As for trading him, he would not really net you a tangible prospect even in a typical offseason. Even if there was interest elsewhere, every other team knows that it’s just a matter of time before they might pick him up on a minor league deal after he’s released. The best scenario for the Braves is that they could DFA him and trade him to a team for one of their DFA’s. But most likely, he’s DFA’d, goes unclaimed, and is reassigned to AAA where he’ll either reinvent himself or languish until released.

    Bryce Elder: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
    Jackson Stephens, 3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K

That’s all but 1 out covered by the new guys… essentially an off day for the bullpen. (Darren O’Day had to come in and get 1 out in the 6th to finish Elder’s last inning.)

The greater point here is that Alex and Snit made good choices, the new guys did their jobs well, and the pitching staff is now reset to move forward in this extended opening stretch.

One more thing about Bryce Elder. He reminds me a little of Drew Smyly from the right side. None of his stuff is “electric”, but it’s effective. And the good thing in this comparison is that Elder is young and on the rise… he won’t fade in the later months of the season. The best stat from last night is the “0 BB”. He kept the ball around the plate with movement and let his team play defense. He can carve out a pretty good career by doing that. He’ll also go longer into games without maxing out his effort on every pitch. The previously discussed Sean Newcomb could learn alot from the 22 year old University of Texas product.

After getting shelled Monday by the Nats, the Braves flipped the script last night and turned it into a laugher. The old adage is true, a team is only as good as its next day’s starting pitcher.

Ozuna appears to be finding his stroke again.

Grey vs Fried today, 12 o’clock game on MLB network…

Soto will sign with the Yankees, he wants to be on the world’s biggest stage. Currently he is Washington’s modern day version of Frank Howard.

Especially true if Judge bolts to the hinter lands. He is looking for a $35MM per year payday. Not sure New York is willing to overpay by that much, this is no longer George Steinbrenner’s club. They actually have a limit to how much they think a guy is worth. Besides, they need pitching.

Somewhere out there somewhere is a pitching coach who can fix Nuke… I just don’t know if he is in the Braves organization…

I might note that Newcome was not the only Braves pitcher to get shelled this homestand.

I might venture to add that unless you can throw a fastball 100 MPH with a wrinkle, two pitch pitchers should not be starters.

Rubber match today, lots of good seats still available. Too many people in Georgia have day jobs and can’t get off to see the Braves play the Nats on a Wednesday afternoon. Plus there is nowhere to park.

    Sean Newcomb:
    2017 1.570 WHIP, 5.1 BB/9
    2018 1.329 WHIP, 4.4 BB/9

    2020 1.902 WHIP, 7.5 BB/9
    2021 1.701 WHIP, 3.4 BB/9

It’s not about his appearance this season, it’s about his history No pitcher can survive with so many runners on base, especially when your walks put them there.

And unless some pitching wizard can teach him some control, he’ll be gone quicker than you can say “Jo-Jo Reyes”.

Why filter them Anyways, they cut out all 3 Strider innings, and all but the 1st inning of Elder. But, he did look quick shaky in the 1st (and who wouldn’t be?) and his bacon was saved by a dp turned by Olson, allowing him to relax. Well, a rather disappointing home stand I would venture to say. I thought I saw it coming with the Braves final week of spring training. Not like every team didn’t have the same amount of time to get ready. Just that the pitchers seemed spotty.

So it is on to the left coast. Maybe being away from the distractions of home will be a good thing. Not like the Braves haven’t been notoriously slow starters in the past, just keep it around .500 until you can get your feet under you guys.

hey, the Dodgers blew their opening series against the Rockies so there is that.

Last night’s contest was a little more like it. Amazing what good pitching will do to turn around your fortunes. Wright was solid last night are threw almost 100 pitches. Only lasted 5 innings though, still needs to work on efficiency. Yes, strike outs are great if you pick a guy for you fantasy team but lots of ground ball outs allows you to pitch into the 8th inning.

Game time 3:30 PM today. Ian Anderson today for Los Bravos. Let us pray for a better performance than his last outing.

Pache has come of age at the perfect time for Oakland it seems. We’ll see how the other progress.

Have I mentioned my concerns over the OF defense? I realize that Cristian Pache was a necessary piece in the Matt Olson deal, but I sure wish he was helping prevent runs in our CF. We still don’t have one. I’ll keep saying that until we do. What is it Gil likes to say… “Somebody has to bat 9th”?

Ozuna should be the DH. Rosario and Duvall should share LF. Ronnie should remain in RF when he returns. And we still don’t have a CF. I realize that AA was clearing the path for Michael Harris II, but he’s still in AA Mississippi and at least a year away. What about today? When will Drew Waters be healthy again? Delino Deshields has 5 hits in 21 ABs at AAA Gwinnett. Just sayin’…

Good morning folks, Amazing performance by Elder and Strider yesterday. Yes, I realize Elder was a bit all over the place early but only allowing 2 runs in all that was pretty telling. Gutsy is a word I would use, an example of hanging in, not giving in despite not having anything working. Normally Bryce has really good control but for whatever reason the ball was not responding. Strider was again stellar IMHO

Not their fault the Braves just were not having success at the plate but with the lower end of the line up bring zero contributions to the batting order, it is amazing they score the one homer contributed by Ozuna.

Now, the outfield situation. Duvall is doing yeoman duty in centerfield but not really a guy you would want to hang your championship hopes on. He is making all the plays he is suppose to make but he is not necessarily a gold glove candidate out there.

Ozuna is exposed too. His shoulder injury still prohibits him from making strong throws but his bat plays right now so the best we can hope for is maybe the infielders prevent balls from getting thru.

Now Rosario… I do not recall him having this much trouble last season, maybe it is why the Twins were so ready to let him go last year. He almost made a great catch yesterday but like they say, almost doesn’t count except in had grenades and horseshoes.

So what of the rest of the NL East? MEH… I’m not worried. The Mets got off to a hot start last season too. Everyone one else is just growing into the season.

Tonight we will see if Ynoa has got it together yet. Remember, he still has options. I think he a Nuke are bot on the fringe right now but yes, it is still early.

So still a chance the Braves can return home in good shape. I don’t foresee any big moves before mid May at the earliest. Michael Harris will stay in Mississippi until mid season.

I just thought of something, Two guys will get sent down at the end of April regardless. Pitchers?

Using g hpne T doc. So e?perhaps t errors. I think if we’re honest good nights and Phillies did improve over the offseason but the Mets being without degrom really hurts them at least short-term it’s so early right now but you sure don’t want to lose two or three to the Dodgers. V o r, i don’t know what the solution is with the Outfield though Marcell Ozuna probably it’s better playing at least sometimes in left. I’d rather they have signed so later than Eddie Rosario his career numbers just aren’t that good but he sure has flashes even his speed he can probably be better in the Outfield I think he has a really good arm too maybe he’s just not used to the National League parks? But he’s not going to be our center

ok, I know you all go to bed around 6 PM (I keed) so… a few things to say. Ynoa what? he wasn’t as bad as it appears, just the wrong team, and the wrong home plate ump, ugh. During the broadcast, “they” said Rick Kranitz mentioned Ynoa was arching his back when he was trying to rear back and throw hard (IIRC) and Byrd said if you arch your back, you can’t do it without moving your head , so it would create all sorts of issues. I think after a few innings, he started to arch again, and when Rick came out, it was basically too late. So….hopefully, he will figure it out, either in his next start here, or in AAA. Newcomb just needs to be traded/released, it’s never going to happen here.

Chip asked his fellow broadcasters their fav Freddie stories, and Bryd said one time, a recently traded for brave (there has to be a better way to say it, but too late to figure it out) basically blew him off when he tried to interview him, and Freddie grabbed the guys arm and said he should talk to him! Amazing…who’s going to do that sort of thing now? I think Ozzie is just too little to get folks to really listen to him, you know? I think Austin is the best bet, at least down the road.

I turned the game off after Nuke came in and gave up the bases clearing double to Trea Turner (Any hope the Braves could lure him away from the Dodgers in the off season???). I am an old man and you just can’t fight mother nature.

That’s Huascar Ynoa’s ERA in the early outing. Yes, I know it’s still early, but regardless of the month there is a simple fact: Ynoa throws a straight fastball and a slider. That’s it. And you can’t face the Dodgers (or any ML team for that matter) with that repertoire. They’ll simply sit on your fastball. And then they’ll drive it deep to CF in their first AB against their former team.

It must be because there are only 3 position players on the ATL bench.

Want me to name the 2 pitchers?

Huascar Ynoa has 1 option remaining. He needs to go down to some level of the minors where a pitching coach can tech him a changeup. If he wants to resurrect his career as a starting pitcher, then he needs that pitch. Otherwise, he can prepare to transition to life as a short reliever.

The other? Do I even need to say it? I think Ber just did at 3:58am.

Upon further review, it has to be pitchers because there are 16 on the roster and MLB will limit it to 13 when the cut is made, plus when Acuna returns, the Braves will need that roster spot.

Yes, I know there are some who questioned Snit for using Nuke last night but if he can’t get people out he is just taking up space down in the bull pen. I’m sure someone will pick up Newcome as a project off waivers, he will only have to be paid MLB min but the acquiring team and the Braves only on the hook for about $200,000 over that. He has shown flashes of brilliance in the past but failure to throw strikes has doomed him to mediocrity.

Ynoa? At 23 there is plenty of time for him to hone his craft in AAA. Learn a third pitch and learn how to throw strikes again.

ESPN: Ronald Acuna Jr. goes 1-for-3 with double in first rehab start ahead of long-awaited return to Atlanta Braves

Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. went 1-for-3 with a double in his first rehab appearance Tuesday night for Triple-A Gwinnett.

Acuna, returning from a torn ACL, batted leadoff for the visiting Stripers, flying out to center field in his first at bat, doubling off the wall in right-center in his second and then finishing his evening with a groundout to third.

He was replaced in right field in the sixth inning.

Pitching for Jacksonville was 23-year-old righty Max Meyer, ESPN’s 33rd-ranked overall prospect. The Jumbo Shrimp won 2-0.

Speaking after the game, Acuna said he was excited to be back on the field for the first time since tearing his right ACL in July 2021.

“I didn’t know if I would come back and be the same. Now I’m healthy again. Actually, I feel I’m better than I was,” he told reporters, according to The Athletic.

When he rejoins the Braves has yet to be determined. The team had targeted a May return, and it opens a lengthy homestand May 6.

But Acuna said Tuesday he hopes to return to the majors sooner than that.

“Very good. Ready to go,” he said of his knee.

I think the Braves just finally reached a point of exasperation with Nuke and without Luke Jackson to kick around he became a sore point. I would not be lying if I said I had high hopes Newcome would finally reach his potential and be aggressive and harness his million dollar arm but alas, it just wasn’t happening.

So good luck in the Windy City Sean, maybe the Cubs can get you to figure it out. A change of scenery can do you a world of good. No pressure to be the guy.

It should be noted that with today’s off day coupled with another on Monday, the need for a 6th starter is mitigated. So Lee goes down to make room for Chavez, and Touki goes down to possibly make room for another hitter since the bench has been carrying just 3 since the season started. Remember, Austin Riley will be back from the Paternity List very soon, maybe by tomorrow’s game. I’m wondering if they’ll keep Travis Demeritte around until the roster drops from 28 to 26 on May 1.

“Well, the Marlins anyway. perhaps the Braves can swap Rosario for Soler this week end???”

Gil, sounds like a plan. I don’t know if anyone saw/heard but Rosario didn’t exactly bust his butt to try to get to a ball that was the first hit Fried gave up in the 6th inning. Brian Jordan said he thought should have dived for that ball (It was in front of him) Paul Byrd agreed. That was the last I heard about it. They didn’t show a different angle on the play. Perhaps he didn’t pick the ball off the bat…I think he is one of (too) many players that claim to not speak English on the braves team. Hows a guy born in Puerto Rico need a translator? Will Acuna ever bother to speak English? (between that issue, and having issues with FF telling him how to, you know, be a Brave, a winner, he’ll never be a team leader… don’t think I will care too much when he leaves for greener pastures-but stuck with him for 6 more years 😛 )
We are stuck with Rosario for the next 2 years , but hey, he was cheaper than Soler so….

First, it’s still the first month of the season and there was a shortened spring training. It’s waaaay too early to start worrying about hitters not being in stride.

Second, Rosario has never been known for his glovework, and he’s certainly not a RF. But out of necessity, that’s where he is. Still, he’s not as bad as Nick Castellanos or Kyle Schwarber (now that is one frighteningly bad OF combo). We’ve known from the beginning that the OF defense would be a concern before Ronnie came back to the roster to stabilize things. When Rosario shifts back to LF, his defensive deficiencies will be batter masked.

Third, Ronnie has not yet come back to stabilize things defensively or offensively. He’ll have an impact on both for the better.

The Braves OF tonight, reading L->R: Orlando Arcia / Guillermo Heredia / Travis Demeritte

Wow. Who would have guessed that combo would be staring for the defending champs at this point of the season? But the simple fact is that neither of Adam Duvall nor Eddie Rosario are knocking the cover off the ball, and their respective defensive deficiencies are well documented. Actually, Duvall has done a passable job in CF, but he doesn’t have the range needed for that location especially given the stiffs he’s had around him. Tonight’s starting 3 probably won’t be garnering any All-Star votes either, but they should at least help keep some of the cheap hits from dropping in on Kyle Wright. I believe it was Wright’s last start in which he had a perfect game going into the 5th or 6th inning only to watch a shallow fly ball fall harmlessly in front of a slow approaching Rosario. And if you aren’t driving any runs in, you gotta keep potential runs off the board in return. They say you can’t win the division in April, but these games count just the same as September ones. Can’t bleed to death early from a few paper cuts. I’m not sure the Braves can match last year’s charm in closing too large a gap in the second half. Gotta win these games against the Fish and the Cubs… or we’ll be right there with ’em.

Seriously… what else could you expect from the OF we’ve been trotting out day after day? No real CF; a DH in LF; Duvall and Rosario regressing back to the back of their respective baseball cards; a journeyman at DH… they are playing exactly to expectations.

Getting Ronnie back will help a lot, but it won’t fix everything. I’ll keep beating the same drum until the issue is fixed: this team needs a real CF.

We all know Duvall has been a notoriously slow starter against all but Braves pitching. It’s par for the course as I see it. Eddie Rosario on the other hand has looked abysmal in the field as well as the plate. If he had got on base more often, I expect I would have seen it there too.

Demeritte has looked very good at the plate as well as in left field. Arcia showed his unfamiliarity in the outfield as well yesterday.

Everyone is waiting for Acuna Jr to return but he doesn’t pitch too does he? There have been some disappointing outings for the staff so far. More than should be at the point.

Bryce Elder is going to have to learn to throw that slider as an out pitch. Devastating down and away break to right handers but Marlin hitters were on to it after the 1st inning and just allowed him to throw those pitches out of the zone and not chase.

You know something had to be wrong with Eddie, just way too many really bad at bats. It is hard enough to hit with major league norm vision of 20-15 vision. The other day he swung at a couple of pitches that were no where close to his swing plane.

I watched the last couple of innings of the Mets/Cardinals game last night. Talk about grasping defeat from the jaws of victory…

Hopefully Eddie’s vision can be corrected. As much as I want him to be the Eddie Rosario that led us to a World Series championship, I really just want him to be healthy first and foremost. But if that can happen, and he can come back to us in a couple months, he could be the key deadline acquisition once again.

Now… how do we fill the void? Is Alex working the phones? And if he is do we have any draft capital remaining to make a difference? And if we do, will it completely deplete the already weakened pipeline?

This is the time to bring in a real CF and help correct the OF deficiencies. Starting Guillermo Heredia or Travis Demeritte is NOT the answer.

Something else important to remember… Rosario was our LH bat to help balance the lineup. Heredia and Demeritte are both RH. So this is more than just trying to piece together an OF until Ronald returns with his RH bat.

    Per MLB Communications:

By agreement between MLB and the MLBPA as the parties monitor player health, the maximum of 13-pitchers on Active Rosters set to begin on May 2nd will instead go into effect on May 30th; a 14-pitcher maximum will be in place from May 2nd-29th.

With that in mind, the Braves have today replaced Eddie Rosario on the active roster with RHRP William Woods.

Now… there is alot we can read into that. First, how many of you have heard of William Woods? I don’t mean that as an insult, but it’s still relevant in that I can’t imagine that Woods is a long term answer for anything. Rather, Woods is a guy on the 40-man roster with minor league options that can fill a roster spot for a few days until the rosters are trimmed back to 26. Then he can easily be optioned back to Gwinnett. This is also not to say that Woods can’t stick around. He now has about 4 games in which to impress Snit enough to win a job over Jackson Stephens or such. I think he could also be a guy that could stick around should the execs decide to move Spencer Strider back to AAA to continue his development as a starter.

There are alot of moving parts at the moment. Remember, the roster must be trimmed by 2 by next Sunday and Ronnie is due back soon. So you really will need to make 3 “cuts” in the next couple of weeks. This doesn’t take into account that one of the starting OF just hit the IL.

Like I said, alot of moving parts. Don’t look for the front office to sit idle for long.

    C d’Arnaud (R)

    Quick bio on Travis Demeritte:

He was a 2013 1st round draft pick by TEX out of Winder-Barrow HS (GA), located just 1 county over and about 15 miles from where I live. He was drafted as a SS and played all over the IF in his first pro seasons. He was traded to ATL at the 2016 deadline for P’s Lucas Harrell and Darío Álvarez.

ATL assigned him to high-A Carolina where he continued in the IF. He was promoted to AA Mississippi in 2017, and initially struggled with AA pitching in a pitchers’ park. He remained in AA In 2018 and was moved to the OF, which was obviously agreeable with him as he was named the Mississippi Braves player of the year. He began 2019 at AAA Gwinnett and made the AAA All-Star team before once again being traded at the deadline, this time to DET along with P Joey Wentz for closer Shane Greene.

In DET, Demeritte immediately made his ML debut in LF after Nick Castellanos was dealt way from DET at the same deadline. He hit .225 for the Tigers over the rest of the 2019 season. He opened the 2020 Covid-shortened season in AAA but was called up for 18 games where he hit just .172. He was DFA’d over the offseason to open a roster spot for a FA signing.

The Braves claimed Demeritte off waivers and outrighted him to AAA Gwinnett. Last season in Gwinnett he made some adjustments to his mechanics which paid off as slashed .282/.363/.575 with 21 HR’s in 81 games, prompting the Braves to protect him on their 40-man roster in the offseason. He started off the 2022 season in Gwinnett with the same success, slashing .283/.365/.630 with 2 HR’s in the first 12 games.

Perhaps even when old codgers like me are ignoring his hard work and improvement, Demeritte is finally beginning to realize some of the potential usually associated with 1st round draft pick. Some players are slower to develop than others, and these days expectations seem to be higher for younger players. There won’t be another fan more excited for him if he proves my early uneducated assessment as dead wrong.

Maybe we have found the right player at the right time. I hope so. I’ll gladly eat the obligatory crow.

Maybe if Travis Demeritte can actually stick and perform, he could form an effective LF platoon with Eddie Rosario (once healthy). As you noted, Ber, I’d feel alot better about Adam Duvall in CF if he had Ronnie and Demeritte flanking him.

Now… let’s have a brief discussion on the roster moves in context.

Ronnie is back, thank You Lord, and LH Alex Dickerson is off the roster. At a glance it doesn’t make alot of sense to send off one of the very few LH bats to make room for yet another RH bat. But when you drill down you realize that Dickerson was strictly a DH, and of no real use in the OF. And with Ronnie back, Marcell Ozuna moves back into his DH position and out of LF (likely manned by Travis Demeritte, for now). Regardless of which side of the plate he bats from, you can’t keep 2 pure non-fielding DH’s on the active roster. The bench is short enough as it is.

That said, I believe AA is actively looking for a LH hitting CF or LF, if not a starter then a platoon candidate.

About last night…. Demerite crushed two balls that simply died on the warning track. Looks like we are returning to the dead ball era.

The outcome was disappointing after the comeback but somehow I knew the Braves would fall short after Ozzie grounded out for the third out.

Yes, Acuna has been sorely missed but Charlie Morton’s loss of control is becoming alarming.

Speaking of picking up an OF, don’t forget that all 30 teams must trim their rosters by 2 players before Sunday. There could be a sort of Free Agent waiver wire pool develop among players with no Minor League options remaining. It will be interesting to see if there are deals made all over the league as GM’s seek to fill needs or acquire prospects. The Braves already fall into that category as Alex Dickerson is in DFA limbo and could be moved to a team in need of a DH, perhaps for a low prospect that can at least be stashed in the minors… or possibly even as part of a salary dump. The D’backs are at the bottom of a stacked division and have the LH hitting David Peralta in their pockets for $7.5M this season. Think contenders wouldn’t be interested in his bat for just a 1 year commitment? Think the Snakes wouldn’t like to save $7.5M while still finishing far from the top of the division?

    It’s a thought.

Today’s roster rant by me. Feel free to bypass it if you’re tired of the poor old dead horse continuing to be beaten.

After the mandatory trimming of the roster down to the standard 26, the Braves still have a wonky (technical term) roster. My chief complaints:

First, at the moment (and that’s an important distinction), there are only 4 starting pitchers. Those, of course, are the 4 established starters that will remain until and unless there is injury, slump, war, famine, etc. You have Max, Charlie, Kyle and Ian, each of whom will make starts over the next 3 days in a 4-gamer with the division leading Mets. [Hard disclaimer: I do not pay any attention to the standings before Memorial Day.] There is an off day on Thursday at which time the 5th starter could be skipped to flip the rotation back to the start, But thus far Snit has shown a tendency to try to give these guys an extra day’s rest between starts. So I won’t be surprised to see a reliever sent down after Wednesday’s series wrapper and another starter added before Friday’s series starter. The caveat here is that they could hold Spencer Strider out of relieving after today and give him his first ML start on Friday vs. the Brewers at home. Regardless of how they do it, the bullpen will have to be shortened by 1 and the rotation lengthened by the corresponding 1. And with the pitching provisions written into the new CBA, neither Bryce Elder or Kyle Muller will be available to come back. I’m not ready to see a return by Huascar Ynoa yet. He needs lengthy work in the minors to fully develop that 3rd pitch. That leaves Tucker Davidson, Touki Toussaint or the lesser possibility of Strider. I’m not digging those choices alot. It is still May but I don’t like giving games away because of roster machinations.

Secondly, and of greater concern to me, the short 3 man bench has no LH hitters. It’s true that the use of pinch hitters is diminished in the DH age, but you do have to have at least 1 LH hitter, right? Especially since…

    transition to next gripe

… the lineup is still horribly RH heavy. There is 1 true LH hitter and 1 switch hitter. That’s it. And it’s magnified by the fact that there is no LH hitter on the bench. Any manager with 2 or more brain cells to rub together will exploit that with their respective rotations and late in games with their respective bullpens. I expect this team to see a vast majority of RH pitchers until they make some adjustment.

    Glaring to me…
    Adam Duvall: .188/.250/.288
    Guillermo Heredia: .130/.231/.304

Agreed that they are not the only ones scuffling – ahem Ozzie, Dansby – but they are the ones that are RH hitters in the OF and on the bench that could benefit the most from an upgrade. Thus far, Travis Demeritte is making the most of his chances and is not deserving of anything but more playing time. But Adam and Willy? My preference, as if you really need to ask, is to somehow acquire a LH hitting CF. How that can happen is not clear, but I don’t get paid 7 figures to work it out, either.

At this point, I’ll take the still developing Drew Waters and his rehabbing hamstring. Seriously.

they really needed that win (in case ya didn’t know that 😉 )
funny, I just hadn’t noticed how very cold the offense had gotten. How cold? Ozzie was 0-20 hitting .202 I think, before I heard him make an out (we were driving to Summit cruise night) he got 2 hits later.
Matt Olson was white hot there early on (the opposite of what I expected switching leagues, teams) but even though his B.A. is .281 he is hitting .171 last 15 days , and .111 with 3 RBI’s in his last 7.
Marcell Ozuna last 15 is hitting .200 with …3 RBI’s.
Acuna isn’t up to speed yet, so basically the offense is Riley, Travis, and…Travis.
    We know that will change….

Fortunately it is still early and someone can light a fire under their a** yet. But this team looks shell shocked.

Mabey the Braves can pull off a series split tomorrow but I would not bet any hard money on that.

Good morning Stuffies, While McGill was tough for 5 innings, his stuff lost it’s zip in the fateful sixth. I thought it odd for Showalter to bring in Ottavino for the third straight day. His slider did not have the break it had the two previous days and the Braves made good on it.

On Demeritte, it could have been a dozen different reasons for his fatigue. the beginning of a flu bug, bad mattress, late date with a hooker…. Perhaps we will never know and then again we might.

Another challenging day for the hitters and the pitchers. It is not that I mind so much bad calls of balls and strikes as the the inconsistency between teams. However, calling a batter out on a pitch 6 inches off the plate is just really bad form and could lead to an ump having his finances audited methinks….

It is always hard for me to sleep after a good Braves win and tonight is no different. What a good ball game and the Braves were flashing gold glove caliber leather tonight. Big fly by Acuna was very welcome.

As I said, hard to sleep so I have watched parts of the Dodgers/Cubs, Arizona/Colorado, Marlins/Padres and lastly Washington/Angles Zona blew it in the 9th with Melancon on the mound. Cubs lost and the Malins shut out the fathers 8-0 with Soler applying the coup de grac with a grand slam. Thing is, no matter where you look, there are ex Braves. Did I mention Kimbrel threw the ninth for LA?

So tomorrow it is a day game 1 pm or so to wrap it up against the Brew Crew, would love to win this series but with Charlie Morton toeing the rubber it is a crap shoot. In all fairness, Charlie appeared to find himself in his last outing after the 3rd inning. Slowed his tempo down so maybe he can be reminded of that Sunday.

Nice ride, I had an 82 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royal which was also a coupe. One of my all time favorite cars. It had a 350 but was peppy. I did not know it at the time but all GM 307s and 350s had a defective baring in the distributor and would cause an intermittent miss. Drove me crazy so I traded for a PU. If I had know what the problem was, likely I would still be driving it. Good looking Buick you have there. I recommend you change your fuel filter regularly until all the gunk is gone from your tank.

I guess a truer statement would be GM’s small block V8s of that era. Only way I found out what the real problem was with a factory recall of my wife’s ’89 IROC Z Camaro. Did you know the Chinese could not make a ball baring worth a hoot? Turn out it was a very closely guarded trade secret. Pretty sure American companies sold that out in the ’90s when they started moving manufacturing off shore.

People somehow equate my disdain for Chinese goods with Asian hate… I call bullshit. It is not the Chinese I hate, it is the Chicoms who reap the profits and use it against us and the short sighted CEOs who moved their companies overseas to eek another nickel out of the labor force. Funny how many CEOs think it takes a million dollar boss to rule minimum wage employees. Buy American made products if at all possible.

Okay, stepping down off my soapbox now.

Gil, looked one up, those are nice! You never see those as 2 doors….what an odd issue!!! Never heard of that before…the years GM allowed quality to go downhill across the board…went from #1 to # 2 on more ways than one.
funny how except for Camaro’s and Mustangs, there aren’t really any 2 doors out there anymore (ok Corvette, but they don’t make a lot of them, and are now super expensive)

El Dorados too. I am incline to think it was the American auto makers trying to keep up with the European trend setters. Heck, you don’t see that many two doors on pick up trucks anymore either.

There are so many things I have learned about cars over the years after the fact. There is/was a very good reason why Toyota and Honda overtook GM and Ford… Mopar was just an Obama hit job… closing down dealer based on politics….

Ozuna had gone 15 games without an RBI , got 2 tonight, but without a hit…BA was .137 before tonight…sigh!!!!

Odd, only the mutts are above .500 in our division, but in the NL west all teams are at least 2 games above .500. Who predicted that????

Hello all… I have been without internet for 8 days now, so communications are limited.

Yes, Manny Piña is done for the year but he will hardly be missed. The team as already trying to figure out how to keep William Contreras around, and now they have him. There is also the side benefit of being able to place Piña on the 60-day IL when it’s needed to open up a much needed 40-man roster spot. At some point Alex is going to have to bring in some help to shore up this flawed team.

Travis Demeritte has done an OK job, but OK doesn’t win rings. Adam Duvall either has to get himself on track soon or he also needs an upgrade. The way I see it, we still need 2 OF. Am I wrong? I haven’t forgotten about Eddie Rosario, but he’s probably out until August at the earliest. This OF needs help sooner than later.

I’m not worried so much about pitching. We’ll add Kirby Yates sometime after the ASB, and possibly Mike Soroka as well, although I’m a little less confident in Mike. I pray he makes it all the way back, but that’s a tough double-humped hill to climb. Still, the team says his recovery is on track and he also could be a post-ASB addition. I expect Spencer Strider to join the rotation at some point, but who knows when that might be. Tomorrow’s off-day gives them a little break, but there are still only 4 starters listed at the moment. Unless the Braves recall Bryce Elder, Strider could move on in. But I can see where they prefer the soft-tosser to start the game with the flame-thrower coming out of the pen. Still… if you’re gonna use Strider for multiple innings anyway, why not go ahead and start him?

But I’m off track. OF help… that’s the need. Time to start looking around. Maybe I can get my home internet back soon and get back to my usual interweb crawling. This lack of connectivity sucks.

And for those watching such things, like me…

As of yesterday, Drew Waters was slashing .538/.538/.769/1.307 in 3 games since returning to AAA Gwinnett from the IL. He posted similar numbers in 3 rehab games at AA Mississippi before said return.

And uber-prospect Michael Harris II is batting .319 with 4 HR, 10 2B, 20 RBI, 20 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 122 PA this season at AA Mississippi, where he has reached base in all 27 games played… well, before yesterday anyway. I haven’t seen what he did yesterday yet. Darned isolation.

About last night…. Watching Kyle Wright in the 2nd inning, it seemed as if he gave up throwing his fastball and fell in love with his breaking stuff a little too much. That is fine in spring training but not in a major league game. I’ll not be too hard on him because I watched John Smoltz do the same thing. Non competitive pitches are the bane of any starter. Professional hitters will just wait you out. That is unless you are wearing a Braves uni but I digress….

I would seriously doubt him being in the line up after a day off unless he could line up in centerfield. That said, with everyone getting the da off today, I would expect the A team to be on the field Friday night. Of course if Acuna’s groin is still twitchy, we could a repeat of last night’s offering. Tweaked a groin eh? No surprise there. Bring up Drew and put him in centerfield. Put Acuna on the IL retroactive to last week.

I was out and about and listening on the radio. (actually, I think I saw Olson’s error-then left) Heard Will Smith give up a wild pitch, then , Austin throwing into center…well, 2-1 lead to trailing 5-2 game is clearly over with basically 3 errors in the inning.
came back to hear game was 5-5 , and then Austin’s double to give them a 6-5 lead!
Can’t imagine the emotions you’d feel being at the game, with that kind a tight 2-1 game, then seeing the braves fielders and Will Smith messing up….only to see them not give up and turn the sure lose into a win….like several have said, may be a turning point for the braves….

Ok, Dansby, Ozzie, Olson, and …..Ozuna have played in all 35 games. Riley and Duvall in 34 game Why? They can’t miss a Sunday game against the Pads? the “top” hitter BA wise is Olson, at .262. of course, that’s after that hot start he got off to. .222 in his last 30 games and over his last 15 games, .188. Maybe give him a day off, after 2 errors in 2 days? Who is the backup 1st baseman anyways, Riley? Who is the backup CF’er? Guillermo Heredia (hitting a robust .118) CAN Travis D…(wait, both are Travis D!) play there, or is that too tiring for him?

CAN Travis D play there (CF), or is that too tiring for him?

Fielding has been one of the impediments to his ascension in the ranks. He needs to stay in the corner, preferably in LF. He makes the occasional great play because he’s a great athlete, but he won’t win any Gold Gloves. His angles and routes are sometimes suspect. Remember, he was drafted “bat first” as a SS, but scouts thought he was likely better suited for 3B. He was later converted to OF to accommodate his bat when it became apparent his glove was not going to be his ticket to The Show.

I’m always happy to see a guy begin to show the payoff of the potential scouts saw in his bat, especially when you read that he recognized the flaw in his swing and worked in the offseason to make the necessary adjustments. Obviously something has paid off, and it’s a great boon for the Braves who are simply not getting much else from an Acuña-less OF.

IMHO, if the Braves can get Ronnie healthy and find a solution for CF, then the hitting roles can become better defined and all the hitters will begin to look like themselves again. We’ve heard this a million times, but it always seems to ring true, whether it’s on starting staff, in the bullpen or in the lineup… when guys know their roles, they simply perform them better.

IMHO, Adam Duvall is the guy to keep an eye on over the next couple of weeks. Currently, the misplaced CF is slashing an icy .202/.262/.303. No one ever expects Duvall to win a batting championship, but you do expect him to give you some power to go along with his swing/miss potential. Given the emergence of Travis Demeritte, Duvall seems like the guy on the bubble to me. This is how this casual fam sees things unfolding if Duvey can’t find his footing at the plate…

I can see the Braves DFA’ing Duvey, opening up both an active roster spot and a 40-man spot. I can see the Braves moving Drew Waters (.290/.313/.484, in 7 games since returning from the IL) on up to The Show to A) shore up the CF defense and B) see if he can perform the way he did in Spring before injury. At the very least he will immediately improve the overall OF defense. At best we might get something out of his SH bat. He’s a spray hitter with “easy” power. His bugaboo has always been the propensity to chase bad pitches. But isn’t that happening with Duvey already? Maybe we can at least make the defense better. And the final domino in the line is moving Michael Harris II up to AAA to take Waters’ now vacant spot. He’s not a realistic candidate to make the jump all the way to ATL, but he’s already shown he can hit AA pitching. He needs the next challenge.

Perhaps none of this will happen, or maybe just one or two steps. But something needs to happen. That CF spot is the most glaring place that is hampering the success of the team thus far in 2022. It’ll be shored up for good possibly as early as next season. But something needs to happen now. I like Duvey, but he isn’t producing and we pretty much know who he is. Can Waters do much worse? Maybe it’s time to give him a chance to do something.

Is it just me or does it seem the current A-Braves team misses Freddie more than they let on? They just seem flat to me.

Ber warned us: He told us that Matt Olson has the propensity to hit a lot better with the bases empty than with men on. The complete opposite of Adam Duvall. (Well, when Duvy is hitting that is)

Yesterday’s game was the classic example of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. What is with all the errors all of a sudden? The game should never have gone to extras.

On to Milwaukie, another team who will be glad to see the Braves again.

V, it’s odd, but I think a good chunk of the reason the guy who lead the league in HR’s and RBI’s last year is not doing well at the plate is because…who is? Catcher Travis and outfielder Travis are about it. until Ozuna’s 2 run homer, he had gone…. 17 games without an RBI! I mentioned Olson’s woes of late. Ozzie .238 last 7 games (no homers in last 15 games) Riley, 1 HR and a 204 BA last 15 games. Dansby, .158 last 7 games. Duval 1 Hr .209 last 15 games (.267 last 7 games though 😉 ) Ozuna, .160 last 30 games, .120 last 15. Why is he out there every single day again? shoot, just looked up d’Arnau, .206 last 15 games, .125 last 7!!! I truly thought he was still fairly hot….

whole team stinks at the plate right now….

Ozuna, .160 last 30 games, .120 last 15. Why is he out there every single day again?

Because the other options are… Orlando Arcia and Guillermo Heredia?

I’ve said it time and time again. In fact, I’m even tired of hearing me say it. This is a flawed roster.

If we are seeking immediate help from AAA, well… Alex Dickerson is hitting about the same down there as he did up here. The team leader in OPS and HR is IF Pat Valaika, a RH journeyman.

SS Braden Shewmake is slashing a respectable .307/.360/.436 but across 28 games has driven in just 6 runs. Teaching him to play CF might normally be a consideration if you didn’t have Drew Waters, who is the #3 prospect in the system, already playing there with #1 prospect Michael Harris II just a couple of steps behind him.

Bottom line is this… across the board, this team isn’t hitting. But it’s more glaring in the OF because Ronnie can’t play consistently and everyone else is playing out of place and the defense is suspect. If it weren’t for the TravvyD (2022 version of Charles Thomas) currently riding a hot streak, the OF production would be among the league’s worst. Add to that the relative lack of production from the DH and you get the idea. It’s hard for me to condemn the IF when none of them can settle into a consistent role like they have in the past when they were the most productive IF in the game.

It’s a flawed lineup. It’s too RH heavy; it relies too heavily on journeymen; it lacks a true CF thus everyone else is playing in a constantly shuffled deck; the superstar is injured.

What are the remedies? Well, a healthy Acuña is a good start. Adding a solid LH bat at either DH or CF would be another boost. But how do you do that?

Would it be crazy to consider moving Dansby (who is in his last year of contractual control) for a real CF and promoting Shewmake? That would be a radical move, but I have yet to see any indication that the Braves are married to Dansby long term. The other radical move would be to promote the scorching hot Harris from AA, but he’s just 21 years old and this season’s games at Mississippi are his only pro games above the low-A level.

The other elephant in the room is Ozuna. He’s a contractual albatross with less than zero trade value who is giving the team nothing in player value… which brings us full circle. Why is he playing everyday? There simply are no other real options on the current roster.

As a fan, I would not be opposed to at least taking a look at one of the youngsters. I mean, they can’t do any worse, can they? And even if they did, they could go back down and have a better idea of what it takes to come back and stick. I think I’m bringing Waters on up and bumping Harris to AAA. Even if Waters struggles at the plate he’s gonna be the best defensive OF on the roster… with the possible exception of a healthy Ronnie. I like Heredia, but he’s of very little value to the team other than his plastic swords.

Waters gives you strong defense up the middle, a SH bat, power potential, great speed, and has already played a season and a half in Gwinnett. Let’s start him in CF, bat him 9th, and move Duvall to the bench where he can occasionally spell Ozuna as DH. It lengthens the roster as there are plenty of innings to go around.

Let me remind you that the current CF, who is not a CF, is slashing .197/.259/.295 with just 2 HR’s but 45 K’s in 35 games. If you are going to try to improve the lineup, that’s the place to start.

Hard to argue with your opine after watching the current line up flail away last night. Somehow, even though the only run scored on a wild pitch, I doubt the outcome of the game would have changed even if the game had gone into extra innings. Pitiful, just pitiful…

I am reminded of the Deena Carter song “I Shaved My Legs For This?”…. Shelling out $130 bucks for the MLB package when I could easily watch the Nats and Birds lose for free… AUGHHHH!

All the while Freddie continues to play MVP caliber baseball everyday. Just makes me sad…. And I think the team misses more than his bat. Somebody needs to open a can of Whoop A** on this team’s collective physic.

V, would Dansby bring a real CF’er? what would it do to team chemistry? (he and Ozzie) I know, guys are traded all the time but….

I still have many more issues with the LF’er then the CF’er. Last year, the CF’er was the leader in HR’s and RBI’s (have I mentioned that before 😉 ) last year, before taking a mandatory break for being a _____, in 188 AB’s hit…213. in 138 AB’s .210. 326 AB’s it’s getting to be a habit, not hitting…
Duvall was willing to move to a very tough position at 33, and seeing that Ozuna is hitting .173 as a DH, he doesn’t want to be a full time DH. Well, tough. Did anyone notice last night, that last night , Ozuna didn’t even try to throw to 2nd base, and that brewers player, is the one that scored. Dude used to have a great arm, now any one of the 4 of us could out throw him. Probably needed surgery years ago, but refused. He seems the type.
Duvall should be the one in Left, or DH’ing over Marcel. but, Marcel makes more , so instead of the best team, it will be, what it is….

well….the good news is…the braves won their first road series…
I think…an 0-28 and a stupid mental error in right, should mean the end of the Travis Demeritte era….

Adam Duvall is hitting .235 over his last 15 games (only 1 homer) .192 with 1 RBI over his last 7 games

last 30 games, Olson is hitting .183 (2 homers) and .155 over his last 15 games, and .148 over the last 7 with …0 RBI’s over that span.

But don’t rest either Duvall or Olson, they HAVE to be in there…you know, for their bats. :/

oh, and I saw Ozuna about 25 feet from the infield dirt, throw a ball with all his might…that was skipping by the mound on it’s way to home plate . Teams are going to run like crazy on him (if they weren’t already ) after that weak display. So, he should be the DH and we either need to get 2 more outfielders (if only there were 2 highly thought of outfield prospects in the minors) or at the very least, put Duval in left, and get a CF’er (or call one up) Mutts may have lost their 2 best starters, but the other guys are doing just fine….they aren’t going to roll over like last year…

I’ll keep harping on 2 very glaring items that I seem to continue to beat on all the time…

When you don’t have a true CF, you end up with your LF playing there and the entirety of the bench, including the DH, has to play out in LF. But I wish our problems stopped there. They don’t. Even if you brought in a real CF from either in or out of the organization, the guys you had tabbed to play in LF are either on the shelf with eye surgery or “hitting .235 over his last 15 games (only 1 homer) .192 with 1 RBI over his last 7 games”, as Ber has already told us. Or the band-aid who you thought might be lightning in a bottle is “0-28 and a stupid mental error in right”.

Now, let’s kick the poor horse some more.

When 7 of your 9 batters are RH, opposing pitchers are simply gonna wear you out with down and away strikes. People talk about splitting up your LH/RH batters to dissuade managers from hurting you with their bullpen. But the reality is that if a starting pitcher has a continuous line of RH batters, he can simply hone in on that down-and-away location batter after batter until he’s established that piece of the strike zone as his own. Then you have to sign a lease to even try to hit over there. And the landlord can raise your rent at will, not to mention the ridiculous HOA restrictions, etc.. But I digress…

This team has flaws. Period. Eddie Rosario may or may not help, but we cant even think about him until closer to August.

Will a LH/SH CF answer all the problems? Sadly, no. Being saddled with Marcell Ozuna is an albatross as bad as BJ Upton, except with a rap sheet. That’s not going away for 3 more years. Not unless Alex Anthopolous has mafia ties and can make somebody a deal they can’t refuse. But a new CF that can hit from the LH batter’s box is a good start. And I get that you don’t want to trade for an impact player there with Michael Harris II just a season (if that) away. But you have to do something. Please. What we currently have simply isn’t working.

RH Travis Demeritte, playing LF/RF, in 24 games in Atlanta, despite the hot start:
    .217/.267/.349, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 6 K’s

RH Adam Duvall, playing mostly CF, in 40 games in Atlanta, despite the recent “surge”:
    .199/.263/.291, 2 HR, 16 RBI, 49 K’s

SH Drew Waters, a potential Gold Glove CF, in 11 games at AAA since returning from a hamstring injury:
    .364/.417/.727, 2 HR, 5 RBI, 15 K’s

IF you bring up Waters, you have a real CF providing a plus glove and a plus arm in the OF, and plus speed on the basepaths. He’s going to strike out, but he’s also going to get on base… as evidenced by his current .417 OBP, 50 points higher higher than any current ATL hitter. And even if he cools off by a large mark, is he gonna give you worse numbers than you’re getting already from Duvall and Demeritte? And if that should happen, you send him back to AAA.

If this fan were the GM, I’d call him up immediately (he’s already on the 40-man), and I’d return TravvyD, who has 2 minor league options remaining, to AAA. I’d bat Waters 8th. I’d park Ozuna at DH unless such time as Ronnie needs a break from the OF, and I’d play the hotter hand of Duvall/Heredia/Arcia in LF.

    My lineup:
    Acuña, RF (R)
    Olson, 1B (L)
    Riley, 3B (R)
    d’Arnaud, C (R)
    Albies, 2B (S)
    Ozuna, DH (R)
    Duvall, et al, LF (R)
    Waters, CF (S)
    Swanson SS (R)

Is it perfect? No. Not even close. And Waters may fall flat on his face. Or for that matter, he may not be able to stay healthy, something that he’s dealt with during he’s career. But it’s better than you’re trotting out right now. And it’s at least trying to get better. Standing pat isn’t getting us anywhere.

Duvall has to start hitting again. He’s done it before, so you have to think it’s either a mechanical flaw that he can correct, or the eyes going bad. You can fix one, but not the other. And maybe the pressure of playing out of position in CF everyday has affected his batting. It wouldn’t be the first time in ML history. Ozuna… well, I don’t even know where to start. But maybe his bat is starting to come around a little. At least get him and his weenie arm out of LF.

The other keys, I believe, are Olson and Albies. Neither are playing up to their norms, and each should come around. When that happens, maybe if we have a whole OF we can get on a roll.

    Maybe.

But we gotta do something different now. The same ol’ same ol’ is not getting it done.

I have to agree with you Vee on your assessment of the Braves outfield woes. I feel Demeritte would not be such a bad bench player, he has been having way too many mental lapses. Of course, so has Albies.

I want to not miss the elephant no longer in the room but this team misses Freddie Freeman. You cannot just go ho hum every time you fall flat. Someone needs to light a fire under their collective butts.

I agree Duval needs to move back to left field. He has not played a bad centerfield but he won’t win a gold glove out there either.

And Ber was right when he warned us that our current first baseman was not a clutch hitter…

V, agree completely that William Conteras needs to play some left, why not? Did some in S.T. (or was it right field?) I am sure he has a better arm than Ozuna. (a low bar to be sure)

Gil, I thought when Olson got off to that hot start, (which so rarely happens to guys that switch leagues) he was , if not going to be F.F. 2.0 , he was at least going to hit .280 in the NL and hit 35 + homers. But, with 1/4 of the season played, his 4 HR’s are as many as Phat Albert has….Guessing his swing has gotten long….and the hitting coaches , at least up to this point, don’t want to mess with his unique swing…but, times a-wastin’!

I know Snit, and Bobby before him, are much more patient than the fans, and it usually pays off…but…V’s important standings day is a week away, and it’s already getting out of hand, IMHO. 8 games back, but it’s the records that really stand out. Braves are 3 games below .500, the Mutts are…13 games above .500….wowser

Wayne Cavadi, Battery Power: Drew Waters recorded at least a hit in each game he played last week and is now slashing .304/.333/.457 since returning to Triple-A from his rehab stint.

Meanwhile, our misplaced CF is slashing .193/.256/.283 including an 0-4 w/ 2 K’s last night, and defensively looks lost as a ball in tall grass at times. You want to get his bat going? Move him back to LF where he belongs so he can relax an do what he’s done for his career, and stop the parade/audition of every other available position player on the roster in that corner. If you want William Contreras to get time there, then fine. Play him and bench Duvey, but get a real CF for our poor pitching staff who have a hard enough time getting through 5 innings without the circus in the grass giving up extra outs and extra at bats. If I was a Braves pitcher, I’d be pi$$ed that my GM isn’t giving me sufficient defense up the middle. I can remember a time when that was the Braves formula for winning: pitching and defense up the middle. What happened to the “Braves Way”?

    I have a headache…

I was checking out Drew Waters stats…no steals, no attempts this year. He stole 28. did he have a leg injury this spring? Still, if they have him in CF, even if it’s only 9 games so far. Like you said, the defense will surely improve and I bet he can hit .200 as well 😉

Then, seeing that, no wonder Wash sent him on Ozuna’s single to right and I couldn’t figure out how he was thrown out so easily at home on a weak throw.

First, William Contreras continues to be a bright spot in an otherwise maddening season. The kid needs to be in the lineup somewhere… his bat works. His bat has always been ahead of his glove. Teach the kid LF and let him play.

Second, no matter the overall perception of Dansby Swanson’s value, he always seems to come up with big hits late in games. I realize you cannot quantify “clutch”, but Dans seems to have it nonetheless.

Third, Max Fried is nails. Period.

V, yep, he needs to be in there, til he stops hitting ( was about to think Demerrite was a legit hitter, but he’s not)
    if he doesn’t stop, great!
And yes, Dansby does have that clutch gene…like you said, something you can’t quantify (unless his B.A. goes up late and close, but I’m too lazy right now to look that up 😉 there may be some kid in the organization who can play almost as well as he does, but , the bat is likely not going to compare, over a season.

I almost…almost…felt sorry for Byrce Harper over that monster homer….that was going to be the worst lost of the season….like even Olson said, this win could really turn things around…we shall see….

IMHO, we are going to be dealing with Acuña and minor leg issues pretty much all season. It’s not unusual to have these kind of muscle issues coming off ACL restructure and no real spring training. Hopefully there won’t be a reinjury of the knee itself and he can just limp through the rest of the season… literally. But Snit will have to continue to give him night’s off periodically, and rotate him into the DH role much the way he’s done thus far.

    But…

This issue only magnifies the already insufficient OF mix. Thoppy is going to have to address this at some point. The only real question is how many more games will tick off he schedule before he does.

The team’s needs are already crystal clear some 8 weeks before the trade deadline: CF, LH bat, maybe a combo of both or just 2 new OF, and a 5th starter. Big Tucker Davidson might be a good one some day, but he’s about where Kyle Wright was prior to this season. He just hasn’t clicked yet. The same can be said for Bryce Elder, although I think Tuck will be a better starter eventually. But neither of these guys are ready, and there doesn’t appear to be an answer in the house already. It has to be addressed. No way around it. If we keep keebing around with these guys that cant get out of the 3rd inning then the bullpen will also be a problem before September.

remember the formula for a starting pitcher’s rank” 1 & 1A, expectation of a solid game every time out. 2, expectation of a solid game 3 out of every four starts. 3, solid game 2 out of every 3 starts. 4 solid game 50 % of the time. 5, 1 solid start out of 3… Those are considered reasonable expectations. Superior staffs give better results, not so good and you look like the Nationals. Or, like the Braves in 2015 when Julio was our number 1.

So yes, Alcantara is pretty stellar. I’d take him… That said, when you get a bunch of high draft picks, it is what you are suppose to be able to accomplish. But then there is the Orioles and the Pirates…

I really feel like they are playing some better of late, at least hitting wise (the fielding though, man….)
Strider made …strides today. I don’t think his minor mistake of going for a ball that would have been Riley’s , hurt cuz Marte was likely to beat that one out….Ozuna sliding 10 feet before he needed to….helped Strider throw more pitches than he should have in the 1st. Then Olson having a ball hit the top of his glove instead of an inning ending double play….allowed Strider to give up 5 “earned” runs…..I hope he will get another shot to start….

This team sucks… You cannot keep making mental error or loggly gagging your way thru the first half of the season and realistically have a shot of making the play-off. Forget repeating as World Series champs, this team can’t win a three game series against Washington…

Somebody needs to have a good old fashion melt down and start throwing gear in the dugout or something. Show some heart, make me believe you actually give a damn. As it is, this team is just an embarrassment. Maybe Olson and Ozuna need their eyes worked on too because apparently they no longer have any depth perception…

So, what next? Four games in Denver and then home for a tough schedule.

I am hoping the weather turns a little cooler week after next. The wife and my oldest daughter were talking about taking me to DC on the 22nd to see the Braves. I’m all in but it is not something I can do by myself any longer. Thinking about spending the night so we don’t have to drive home in the dark. We shall see, will take pictures. Thanks Ber… 🙂

A note about Nationals Park: While new, it is not very inspiring. Camden Yards (Orioles) is a beautiful park with lots of unique features. The Washington park is something you would expect to be built in DC. It is just a place…

The did include all the high prices however.

Another factoid about DC… Price for a night’s stay in a Holiday in is $80 with my daughter’s discount vs $329 but the taxes and fees are an additional $90… The thing about Washington is everything is based on someone else footing the bill.
