Northeast GA (God’s Country) – In case you missed it, and I doubt anyone reading this did, the Braves went quietly last Saturday in the National League Division Series, falling to the Phillies in four games and capping what was a very weird season from it’s very beginning.
First, said beginning was late thanks to the seemingly perpetual inability of Major League Baseball and Major League Baseball Players Association to ever agree on anything. Such was the severity of the labor dispute that all of the preseason roster work was disrupted until a mere couple of days before a delayed start to Spring Training and an abbreviated camp. Second, once the roster building resumed, the one sure thing we all felt was a slam dunk turned into a slammed door as team stalwart Freddie Freeman and his camp turned the late negotiations into a high stakes game of poker at which time Braves GM Alex Anthopolous called their bluff and opted for a game with better odds in trading for Matt Olson instead… and that’s how the season began.
The Braves also commenced without superstar Ronald Acuña, Jr. who was still rehabbing a reconstructed knee, something that would continue to be an aggravation after he returned in late April and throughout the hastened campaign
One-third of the fabled Night Shift didn’t even make it out of camp as Luke Jackson required Tommy John surgery to his pitching elbow barely after reporting to North Port. Another third of the feared trio, Tyler Matzek, would suffer most of the season from shoulder discomfort and later himself would undergo TJ surgery right as the post-season started. And the final member of the group, Will Smith, was so bad in 2022 that he was traded away mid-season for an equally bad starting pitcher in Jake Odorizzi.
They lost returning hero Eddie Rosario to an eye condition just after the season started in April, and Eddie never really hit his 2022 stride upon his mid-season return. Backup catcher and free agent signee Manny Piña broke his wrist in May and was never seen again. They lost infield sparkplug Ozzie Albies to a broken foot in June, only to lose him again for rest of the season to a broken finger less than 24 hours after he had made it back to the active roster.
They lost another OF in Adam Duvall to a season ending wrist injury in July, just after he had started to hit again after returning to his more natural corner OF spot after holding down CF for the first couple of months. He seems to have been forgotten as the season carried on, but he was a very necessary member of this team to start the year, and he’s likely played his last game in an Atlanta uni.
Maybe the worst injury of the whole season happened in the regular season’s final week when sensational rookie Spencer Strider incurred an oblique strain, which would have dire playoff consequences a mere couple of weeks later.
But there were also some very inspiring surprises. Young catcher William Contreras replaced Piña on the roster and became an All-Star. Young CF Michael Harris II was called up from AA Mississippi to shore up the OF defense, and batted his way into NL ROY contention with an exceptional offensive season to go along with his Gold Glove caliber defense. The aforementioned Strider had a year to remember as he set several rookie pitching records and cemented himself as the co-favorite for NL ROY with teammate Harris. Young IF Vaughn Grissom gave us a glimpse of the promise he brings to an already young roster. Max Fried took firm grasp of the team’s “ace” mantle, even being called “the best LH starting pitcher in the NL” by Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts. Kyle Wright led the league in W’s and became the team’s first 20-game-winner since Russ Ortiz. 3B Austin Riley played like an MVP for the vast majority of the season. Dansby Swanson became the team’s new Sheriff and played like his hair was on fire every time he stepped between the white lines. And polarizing 1B Matt Olson overcame a late season slump to finish with a very solid year while stepping into a pair of somewhat impossible shoes to fill.
I know I failed to mention other players and other occurrences, but I’ve spent enough characters and words on what was. It’s time to turn our attention to what’s to come.
Interestingly, the 2022-2023 offseason will be somewhat unique for the Braves, and indeed for most teams. While most teams have a General Manager or a President of Baseball Operations, the Braves instead employ a magician. Anthopolous has somehow managed to already wrap up the vast majority of the team’s core for multiple years ahead. Along with the previous deals he had in place with Acuña and Albies, he managed to acquire and then lock up new 1B Olson. He rewarded the mighty Riley with a new deal, then inked both co-ROY candidates to lengthy pacts. He even traded a couple of spare parts to the Angels for closer Rafael Iglesias, who is also under contract for the next few years. Thus, there isn’t really too much heavy lifting to still be done.
So exactly what is left?
Well, the most glaring task ahead for The Great Alex is bringing back Sheriff Swanson. Dansby has gone through a lot in his time here in Atlanta, and has overcome a truncated development period, injuries, and hometown pressures to finally justify being the #1 pick in the draft. He is now easily in the upper echelon of SS in the league just as he begins his first foray into free agency. Jon Heyman reported back in August that the Braves and Dansby had already had discussions on a new long term deal, but nothing became of that. Both Alex and Dansby have expressed the dreaded “mutual interest in returning”, which I suppose is better than no interest. But we here in Braves Country have learned not to take “mutual interest in returning” to mean a deal is imminent. We learned it the hard way. So this is job #1 for Alex, and nothing… repeat NOTHING is taken for granted.
Second, the old axiom always rings true. You can never have too much starting pitching. While the team has Fried, Wright, Strider, and grizzled veteran Charlie Morton back for 2023, the last spot in the rotation is up for grabs. Alex can go one of several ways with this slot. He can leave it up for competition among youngsters Bryce Elder, Ian Anderson, Kyle Muller, and the ever hopeful Mike Soroka. There’s also Odorizzi, but I am loathe to consider him a serious contender. Each of those candidates carries a big question mark. Alex could seek out a FA pitcher like Jacob deGrom, who grew up being a Braves fan and is reported to have interest in coming here. But can Alex afford something like that and afford Dansby too? The Braves ranked 8th in payroll in 2022 with a payroll around $188M after chairman Terry McGuirk’s earlier assertion that the Braves wanted to have a top-10 payroll. AJC beat writer Justin Toscano has recently quoted McGuirk saying “My goal now is to get to be a top-5 (payroll team).” If the Braves want to afford both, they can afford both. But Alex’s tendency over the years has not been to spend heavy on pitchers in FA, but to trade for them instead. And while the pipeline was depleted last season in trades for Olson and Raisel Iglesias, there is still ample talent available to use. While his stock has dropped, Anderson could be dealt if he’s no longer in the long term plans. Muller, whom I see more as a reliever for this team, has good value. SP/RP Freddy Tarnok has value. And of course, the elephant in the room… young hitter Grissom has great value. If Dansby is resigned, then shopping Grissom for starting pitching should at least be considered. If Dansby is not resigned, then perhaps this is the year Alex makes a big splash in the FA pitching market, eh Mr. deGrom? Likeliest scenario: Elder wins the job. But don’t discount the tenacity of Soroka. I won’t count that guy out until he physically cannot compete anymore.
We need to note that Fried is entering his final year of arbitration. If anyone deserves to be locked up long term, it’s Maxie. I’d like to see a deal get done, but maybe Max wants to dip his toe into the FA waters. Who knows? I suppose since he’s still under team control for at least 2023, he shouldn’t be considered a high priority. But he should still be considered.
The acquisition of Iglesias probably signals the departure of Kenley Jansen to FA, but one never knows. When Jansen’s cutter is on, he’s one of the best in the game. And Alex has said on the record that he’d like to bring Kenley back. Still, Iglesias is more likely the closer of the future. “Sliderman” Jackson, who was a hero in 2021, is throwing again in his rehab from TJ, but he’s also a FA. Will he be back? Will Matzek, who is a possible non-tender candidate? Closer is settled, but the other late inning spots are not. Alex will have to address the pen again.
As for the regular lineup, it’s close to being set for some time to come, with the possible exception of SS as has been noted. What about LF? I know that Rosario is still under contract for 2022, but which Eddie will we see? The 2021 playoff hero or the 2022 shadow of his former self? There is no young heir apparent unless Grissom is converted to LF, which could be the best thing for his long term prospects and for the Braves. Contreras was an All-Star at DH, but can the Braves hope to pull off that double duty stunt again? Personally, I don’t see why not. And maybe… just maybe Marcell Ozuna will take his off-season seriously and come back to the team in 2023 as a viable hitter once again.
The bench? Meh… GM’s annually rebuild their benches, so this is just a part of the process. We know Contreras will be there. Orlando Arcia is probably there as well. MLBTR projects Guillermo Heredia to make $1.1M in arb. Will the Braves pay that much for a late game defensive replacement and sword handler? I’m thinking he’s a strong non-tender candidate so a backup for CF will be needed. What about old friend Jason Heyward? Since the Cubs have already given him his walking papers, he would only cost the league minimum to come be a veteran presence and strong mentor to our young players, including fellow Henry County native Harris. I think he brings more to the table than Heredia at least.
Finally, since we’ve brought up the topic of arb, the Braves currently have 6 players eligible. We’ve noted Fried, Matzek, and Heredia already. They also must make decisions on A.J. Minter, Soroka, and reliever Silvino Bracho. A.J. is a lock and a candidate for at least a 2-year of not 3-year deal. I think Soroka will be back on a 1-year deal. Bracho is merely system depth and could easily be non-tendered if they need the 40-man roster spot, but he would also likely be cheap enough to keep around if they so chose, so who knows?
All of this roster wrangling will take place with the knowledge of several rule changes ahead for 2023, including a pitch timer, defensive shift limits, and bigger bases. Yes, the team is now idle for a short while, but the front office is just getting warmed up. Braves organizational meetings will be happening very soon, followed by the Baseball Owners Meetings, and then the real in-person Baseball Winter Meetings (Dec. 4-7). So there’s no time to rest, Alex. Get that magic wand back out and get to work. We’ve got to get ready to battle the Mets and Phillies for the NL East in 2023, and there’s no time to waste.
Outstand Opine Vee as per usual.

V, excellent roundup of both the season, and the offseason…

brain is foggy and a lot of thoughts that are therefore…foggy…
I think we would all agree, Dansby is THE biggest issue of the offseason. Carlos Correa is for some reason, considered better than Dansby (though Dansby is slightly ahead of him on WAR 5.7 to 5.4, via baseball-reference) 22 HR’s and 64 RBI’s .291 BA no steals, and 136 games is considered great, and is going to walk on the last 2 years of a 35 Mil contract. Just saw the Giants may be players for him.
I say this cuz…what is Dansby’s real “value” He plays every game, is one of the best SS’s in baseball , hit’s 25 + homers a year, brings those intangibles (and tangibles) that real leaders and winners have. and really the only thing you can say against him is….he strikes out, a ton. 182 times this year. wow.
Anyways…Just looking at Dansby’s first year, after a great college career, he came up at 22 (not 21 like, another SS we have now) and in 38 games, hit .302/361 sound familiar? Then hit .232/238 the next 2 seasons. I say this because, if Dansby gets a much bigger/longer contract and goes elsewhere, there is no guarantee Vaughn will hit the ground running .
A ever so brief FF mention. We absolutely survived losing him, even won 101 games even though he hit something like 80 points higher for the Dodgers. But, I don’t think you can lose FF and Dansby the next year, and win the division. The Mutts have all the money in the world and might get some like a Bogarts or someone else at 2nd, other big arm (or lose one, but who knows?) anyway, they are going to be a thorn in our side as are the philthies….who have moola too…
It’s what worries me about the signing of Morton so early on. Yes, they really do seem to have money to spend, which is great! but, how much? I still remember DOB saying he can re-sign here for …20 Mil per. That’s quite the hometown discount.
So what is the realistic amount he can be signed up for? and how many years?
hmmmm

The poop on the street (yuk) is that the Braves do not see Vaughn as a SS in their future anyway. He’s a big dude at 6’3″, but still light enough to retain his quickness right now. He’s expected to put on more muscle mass to his frame as he continues to mature, which most evaluators believe will rob him of the quickness and range needed to be a major league SS. He actually profiles more toward 3B or corner OF. And since 3B will be occupied for a while, LF looks to be his best option.
I say all that to say… should the worst happen and Dansby end up signing elsewhere, Vaughn is probably not the plug-and-play replacement that many fans think he could be.

It also has been suggested that he could be a super-utility player much like Martin Prado was here, or Chris Taylor, or Ben Zobrist, etc. You get the idea. He might have more value to the team in that role than as an everyday LF.

So what is the realistic amount he [Dansby] can be signed up for? and how many years?
The general feeling is that he compares most closely to Trevor Story and Javier Baez who were both 29 years old when they entered the FA market. Dansby will be 29 before the 2023 season and could be looking at something very similar to the 6-yr/$140M deals that each of Story and Baez got. Agreed that Dansby’s skillset is different from that of each of those guys, but both Baez and Story are quite different from each other too. The bottom line is that they are all comparable in value to their respective teams (or were when they signed anyway) and thus should be comparable in market value.
So I would look to 6 years and $140M total as a pretty good reference point.
Now, that said, $140M divided by 6 years equals a $23.33M AAV. Currently, Matt Olson holds the highest AAV ever given by the Braves at $21M. Will Alex pony up more for Dansby than he did for Matt? Uh… I’m not so sure. But what about 6 years with the same $21M AAV for a total value of $126? Or maybe bump it just a tad to 6-yrs/$130M? That is probably about where Alex would be comfortable. But that might not be where Dansby is comfortable.
There is also a school of thought that says Dansby could benefit from the Freddie Freeman debacle. I’ve read some believe that Alex may be willing to give in a little more easily to Dansby’s agency in an effort to get back on good terms after last year’s disastrous PR crapstorm. I could see that happening as well.
Whatever the case, I’d like to see those dudes get something done sooner than later for a couple of reasons: #1 to assuage us fearful fans and not grind us into sausage all offseason like last year, and #2 so that Alex has his major hurdle cleared before focusing on the other bits heading into this year’s winter meetings.

Here’s the thing about super utility players in the all DH world. Doesn’t really work, esp on this team. IF Dansby re-signs, he never takes a day off. Neither does Ozzie or Riley. Never going to PH for those 3 either, so, back up LF and RF? Not going to PH for CF’er, RF’er or catcher. So…when would he play?
LikeLiked by 1 person
The flip side of that is that with the DH, you can give a super-utility guy a start at any of those defensive positions and DH the normal starter, keeping their bats in the lineup while allowing them to rest the legs a bit. That might have benefited Austin Riley especially this season, who seemed to be a little tired in September when he came back to earth a little.

great comments above by all. I caught glimpses of the Phillies/Padres game yesterday.
I’m thinking the Padres pitching is a little deeper than the Phillies.

I watched the final 3 innings of the Stankees/Stroths match last night. It may well be the Astros year, all of the pitching appears in tact and they have just enough offense. They will be tough to beat this year.

Report: Walt Weiss turned down an interview with the Marlins for their vacant manager position.
This fan’s opinion is that it was a wise move. Weiss is Snit’s right hand man and confidant. No one knows this team better than Snit, but Walt is very close. And IMO, he’s the easy heir to the top position here when Snit retires. That would be the 67 year old Brian Snitker who treasures spending time with his grandkids. How much longer will Snit man the Braves’ helm? I believe Weiss knows all this and is biding his time to take the reins here in Atlanta.

As obvious as the Gold Glove snub in CF of Michael Harris II appears, I think that there is a little bit of a snub at 3B too. Austin Riley flashed his leather all season long at the hot corner as a part of the overall elevation of his game. I think his offensive prowess may have overshadowed his defense somewhat.
The NL candidates are:
Nolan Arenado, STL
Ke’Bryan Hayes, PIT
Ryan McMahon, COL
Arenado is a given and likely the heavy favorite to win… and deservedly so. But I think Austin deserved a mention here.

agreed Vee, I think the national press/media/baseball writers get a preconceived notion about a player that follows them their entire career. It is usually because most a lazy and to come up with an alternate view would require work and effort. Just saying…

Do I root ….for the Yankees? Well, I’d like to see them win a game or 2 , just to annoy the ‘stroes…. and the cheaters? well, not all that many left from the cheatin’ days , and frankly, quite impressive how with all the draft picks, and upper (and lower) management they lost, they may still be the best team in baseball.
I know V dearly loves ol’ Dusty 😆 but hey, I remember him as a player (unlike the rest of you young whippersnappers ) and I also recall how everyone and their brother seems to hate old managers, act like 30 something folks are just much smarter about baseball…so…maybe the Colt 45’s? Here is some interesting information on the player option remaining on Jake Odorizzi’s contract. With it being a player option for $12.5M, we have pretty much all assumed he would exercise that option and be in the mix with the Braves in 2023.
Not so fast my friend…
The player option is indeed for $12.5M, but the buyout is for $6.5M. With the contract only having 1 year remaining anyway, there is a pretty good chance do will take the buyout and seek another deal elsewhere, even for just 1 year. The math is pretty easy. All he needs is an agreement for $6M to receive the same amount of $$ in total, and the market for starting pitching pretty much guarantees he’ll exceed that. In fact, given the state of starting pitching and the good work he did prior to coming to Atlanta, he will likely come closer to the $12.5M he is due to make here to go with the $6.5M buyout.
I think he’s gone.

I have mixed emotions about his tenure with the Braves, was he nursing/hiding an injury?
LikeLiked by 1 person
2022 was weird for him. He made 12 starts in HOU earning a 3.75 ERA and 1.150 WHIP in 60.0 IP. He only averaged 5 innings per start, but the ERA isn’t bad and the WHIP is actually pretty good. In fact, in his last start for HOU, he pitched 7 shutout innings against the playoff bound Mariners. But in Atlanta, in 10 starts he notched a 5.24 ERA and 1.554 WHIP in just 46.1 IP, averaging just a hair over 4 innings per start.
What was the difference?
He did suffer a pretty bad ankle injury last May that cost him 42 games on the IL. The initial fear was a torn Achilles but an MRI revealed no tear. He avoided surgery, but perhaps never really got back to 100% before the season ended.
If I was in the market for starting pitching depth, I’d give him a 1 year deal in hopes that he could prove he was healthy. Maybe given the fact that he will either cost the Braves $6.5M to not be on the team, or just $6M more to be on the team, we might ought to hope he comes back to compete. Even if he doesn’t win a spot in the starting 5, he could be valuable as a swing man… or as a late spring trade chip.

I have not been paying a lot of attention to the speculation about the upcoming World Series. I imagine the suits at Fox are slitting their wrist with both New York and LA out of the contest. Too bad for them….
I expect I will watch some of the series but I am not setting aside any devoted time for it. Depends on how invested I am on my lasted Gray Man book.
Anywho, I guess I will perk up when the teams start making deals.

Congrats to Spencer Strider for edging out Michael Harris II for the Sporting News nod…
Of all the records and historic achievements in 2022, perhaps the most surprising was Spencer Strider reaching 200 strikeouts in a season faster than any pitcher in history.
That’s impressive for anyone, but especially a rookie. But then, all Strider did this season was impress. So it’s easy to see why his fellow big leaguers voted him the 2022 Sporting News National League Rookie of the Year.
Strider compiled an 11-5 record and used a triple-digit fastball and nasty breaking pitches to establish himself as a key piece of the Braves’ starting rotation. His 2.67 ERA led all qualified rookie starters and those 202 strikeouts were easily tops among the rookie class.
In a survey of 212 players for the NL rookie award, Strider won a 47 percent plurality of the vote, finishing ahead of teammate Michael Harris II, who received 41 percent. Those results help illustrate why the future looks so bright in Atlanta.

Michael Harris II did make the Sporting News NL All-Star team.
Voting took place during September and early October among a panel of 17 NL executives, with the results giving evidence of the immense star power found in the Senior Circuit. Betts was the only player named on all 17 ballots, while Braves phenom Michael Harris II was the only NL rookie to earn a nod.

I have to say, I’m looking forward to a full year of Fried/Strider/Wright. That’s a very formidable trio atop the Braves rotation, and that doesn’t even count the grizzled Charlie Morton, who despite his struggles in 2022 (especially early, coming back from a broken leg) still managed to induce an impressive 205 K’s.
I think with a proper Spring Training and full health, those 4 guys could be as good and deep as any 4 in baseball. That’s why I’m leaning against trying to lure Jacob deGrom here in FA. The rumor mills sure have him coming to the ATL, but I’m not buying it. I think Bryce Elder can be a solid #5. I think Ian Anderson has proven he can pitch at the ML level, if he can get his noggin out of his posterior. But the guy I’m looking at is big lefty Kyle Muller. He’s on the exact same track developmentally that Kyle Wright was on, and is about due to blossom into a bona fide ML starter. How many teams would kill to have 3 very good prospects all knocking at the door?

I remember reading somewhere about 20 or so years ago that Tony Laurussia, then of the Cardinals, commented that for a MLB team to be competitive they needed at least 7 major league ready starters to begin a season. Over the years I have found that to be a pretty accurate statement. AKA, you can never have too much pitching. It sure has been a key in Houston’s long term success.

Well, since there isn’t any other tangible Braves new this week, and likely not to be until the World Series is over and the Free Agent frenzy begins, let’s take a look at the current Braves pipeline and see what we’ve got down there. I especially want to take a look at it from the lens of how it was affected from the penalties the Braves incurred in the infamous Coppygate debacle.
As a reminder, here is how the team was penalized following the 2017 MLB investigation that showed then GM John Coppolella was illegally funneling money to international prospects in 2015-2016. The resulting sanctions included MLB voiding the contracts of 9 international players that the Braves had signed during the 2015-2016 period, MLB deeming 3 additional prospects from 2016-2017 free agents due to excessive bonuses, and another prospect South Korean shortstop Ji-Hwan Bae having his contract agreement rejected.
Not only did the team immediately lose 13 players from the system, they also lost a total of $16.48M in bonuses given to those prospects who would no longer be with the organization. Ouch.
To go along with the player and money losses, they lost a 3rd round draft pick in the 2018 amateur draft and were not allowed to sign any international player for more than $10,000 in the 2019-2020 signing period, and the bonus pool was reduced by 50% in the 2020-2021 signing period.
So how does the pipeline stack up now?
First, let’s break down the current Top 30 by position, shall we?
The Top 10 has just 1 non-pitcher in it, that being #5 Braden Shewmake who is actually trending downward. The Top 30 in total has 19 Ps, 5 OFs, 5 IFs, and 1 C.
What’s that got to do with the penalties the Braves took up the scooter? Well, nothing actually. So how about where the prospects are in the pipeline?
There are 9 at the AAA level or above (5 of which are in the Top 10), 4 from AA, 6 from A+, 5 from A, and 6 in Rookie ball.
So perhaps looking at it that way there is a bit of a sag at AA ball. Except that that really is not the way to look at it either. These comparisons are really all relative since they’re exclusively amongst Braves prospects.
How do the Braves prospects measure up when compared to the rest of the league?
With the graduation of Vaughn Grissom to ML status, the Braves have exactly 0, say it with me… “ZERO” prospects in MLB’s Top 100.
Did the penalties hurt? Like a throat punch from Mike Tyson. Wanna know why Alex has worked so hard to lock up this young core to long term deals? There’s your answer.

Yes, Alex alluded to the long term effect the penalties would have on the organization when he took the reins of power. I am positive it has affected how he has approached the signing of free agents. Were the penalties fair? Heck no and on top of it all, the Commissioner bought Stacy Abram’s BS about voter suppression and pulled the AS game from Atlanta last year.
I won’t forget it and I don’t even live in Georgia.
So, what’s to be done? The Braves will just have to beat the bushes a little harder and out work the other teams. They have a good core of young players in their stable so it could be worse. The likely 10% increase in salary cost is going to be a real thing just to keep up with inflation.
So, we shall see how it plays out.

Another day with no MLB news, much less Braves news. So, with that in mind, let’s drop some roster reminders.
When the World Series wraps up, the Braves will have 8 players eligible for Free Agency: Jesse Chavez, Darren O’Day, Luke Jackson, Kenley Jansen, Ehire Adrianza, Dansby Swanson, Adam Duvall, and Robbie Grossman. Also, Jake Odorizzi holds a player option and could join the aforementioned group if he so chooses.
Additionally, the Braves have 6 players eligible for arb (FA year in parentheses): Silvino Bracho (2025), Max Fried (2025), Guillermo Heredia (2024), Tyler Matzek (2025), A.J. Minter (2025), and Mike Soroka (2025).
For the sake of trying to generate some discussion, who stays, who goes, and why? And while we’re at it, where might the Braves look to add or improve, and who are the possible targets?
Go…

Dansby Swanson, Adam Duvall
For the sake of trying to generate some discussion, who stays, who goes, and why?
ok…in case ya didn’t know…Dansby pretty important to this team, and future teams 😉
IF he re-signs…then it seems fairly likely that Grissom moves to LF (Unless they trade him? But then, for what?who?) But, like Dansby, Riley, and so many others, he might not hit the ground running out of spring Training. IF Dansby flees, then….Do the Braves hand SS to Grissom, or again, worry about him being fully developed? Get some other 1 year guy?
What crossed my mind was , after thinking like everyone else, Duvall was gone…well…If Grissom goes to LF, Duvall can back him up, and DH if Marcel is somehow, someway traded (still think we are going to be stuck with him) If Grissom is our SS, why not Duvall? Here me out, clearly Alex really likes him, went out of his way to talk about him…shoot , just before the playoffs? Or in the middle? How much better the defense got with M.H. in CF and Duvall in left…We still have to pay Eddie Rosario for another year, and we just don’t know what he will give us. of course, Grossman, is similar and can switch hit….hmmm. Or trade/sign a LF. but of course, have to figure out Dansby first and foremost.

Grissom will not be the everyday SS. The suits reportedly have already pretty much decided his future would be elsewhere. If Dansby is not resigned, which I believe he will be, they’ll go elsewhere for a replacement. They’ll have to.
I have a gut feeling a Dansby reunion could prompt a Grissom trade. He’d fetch a pretty nice return in the way of pitching or LF. Might even attach to Marcell to move him out.

I think Grissom is a nice piece but the book got out on him pretty quick. If still with the Braves next season, I see him starting in the outfield with the Stripers next year.

I actually believe that Vaughn Grissom will be a very good hitter in the ML. Yes, “the book” got out on him before the season ended, but he didn’t really get an opportunity to adjust to the adjustment pitchers made to him. What with the super tight division race the team was in, Snit did not have the luxury of allowing Grissom to have the AB’s necessary to make said response and thus Orlando Arcia took the lion’s share of playing time at 2B with his own hot hand.
IMO, Grissom will be a standout player. Will he be a star of the same magnitude as his buddy Michael Harris II? Eh… maybe not. But then again, the kid has hit at every level and carried a very low strike out rate all along the way. That means he has great patience and a great eye… things that cannot always be taught.
As for his defense, it’s obvious he’s a good defender or he wouldn’t have stayed at SS through the system. But as we’ve noted several times, most scouts see him moving off SS as he matures and progresses. He’s a big kid who still has some growing to do. Alot of evaluators compare him to the Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte, who also came up as a SS but has found his footing in CF. Obviously that’s a spot that is locked down in Atlanta, but LF is not. It would appear to be a natural landing spot for the kid. And let’s not forget he is still a kid.
I suggested the possibility of a trade only from the standpoint that his value may never be any higher than it is right now, and LF is typically the easiest position to fill out of FA. If Alex were to go after a top pitcher in a trade… say Corbin Burnes, who is rumored to be one of a handful of Brewers that could be traded to start the soft rebuild in Milwaukee, he’d have to have a Vaughn Grissom to make it happen.
To be clear, I am not suggesting Alex is actively seeking to trade Grissom. I’m not even advocating it myself. I’m merely stating that I do not believe he’ll be a long term answer at SS whether Dansby is resigned or not. IMO, it’s LF or another city.
But I think the SS discussion is moot anyway. I think Dansby is coming back. I’ll detail that opinion in a later post.

I don’t disagree on Grissom’s potential, I just think it would allow him to get more comfortable in left field and allow for him to get more comfortable with the bat.
Given the choice of keeping Rosario or shifting to Grossman, I would opt for the latter…
I look forward to Ozzie returning as the Braves full time second baseman next season. Simply put, he is a better player than any of the Braves other options.
I think he returns as more of the 2021 version than the April/May 22 version.
DuVall? I think he is still an excellent option for the Braves in the outfield. His bat plays. As for money??? Well, y’all know…

I get why everyone is on edge with respect to Dansby given what we experienced last year with Freddie Freeman. I was in that group that was 100% certain Freddie would be back. I could see no scenario whatsoever where he signed elsewhere. Yet he did.
But this is different.
How can I say that? First, Dansby has even more reason to want to stay in Atlanta. Does geography really have any bearing on a star’s free agency? Sometimes it does, and I think this time is one of them. Dansby grew up in metro Atlanta, starred in metro Atlanta, and all his family and friends are right here in the A. He is the epitome of the home grown star and his roots sink deeper than even those of the exalted Chipper Jones. Dansby does not have an offseason home in another location. He’s an Atlanta guy. He bought a $1.63M home in the area less than 2 years ago. Dansby has many, many reasons to want to stay in Atlanta.
Second, the the fact that Dansby is represented by the same group with whom Alex performed the Freddie debacle might actually play positively on Dansby’s negotiations. Neither side wants to repeat last year’s PR disaster and thus each side has greater motivation to negotiate with a common goal in mind. Thus, contrary to the Freddie talks, Dansby’s agents likely prefer Atlanta as his landing spot. We all know that Freddie’s agent leveraged Los Angeles for their entire dialogue. That won’t happen this time.
Third, and probably most glaring, can Alex meet Dansby’s asking price? From Dansby’s perspective, he is coming off a season where he was an All-Star, played all 162 games, led all NL shortstops in defense to the point of winning his first Gold Glove, will likely win the Silver Slugger as well, and was the undisputed clubhouse leader even being dubbed The Sheriff. He is probably looking at 6 years at an AAV of $23M-$25M. Can the Braves afford to resign him? From the Braves perspective, Dansby is coming off a season where he was an All-Star, played all 162 games, led all NL shortstops in defense to the point of winning his first Gold Glove, will likely win the Silver Slugger as well, and was the undisputed clubhouse leader even being dubbed The Sheriff. Can the Braves afford not to resign him? They cannot replace Dansby’s production for even the same cost, and they cannot replace is leadership at any cost. We know the Braves will have the funds available because Braves CEO Terry McGuirk stated on the record a couple weeks ago that the Braves are intentionally increasing their payroll. Still, Braves fans want to point to the fact that they wouldn’t pay long time hero Freeman, thus don’t think they’ll pay Dansby either. In this fan’s view, there is a big difference that no one seems to be remembering. When Freddie pushed for 6 years on his deal, the Alex was hesitant. Why? Because that last guaranteed year would have been in Freddie’s age 38 season. In 6 years, Dansby will be just 34. And in terms of baseball years, that is a huge difference.
I’d like to think that during all this time when we are hearing nothing but crickets during MLB’s announcement freeze otherwise known as the World Series, that the powers that be on both sides of the Dansby negotiations have spent this time wisely and worked out the details on a new deal. I’m personally rooting for the Phillies (I just threw up in my mouth a little) if for no other reason than to get this thing over with most quickly. This fan believes there are enough differences in the Freddie/Dansby cases to still have optimism that a new deal will be announced sooner than later. Let’s hope I’m not misguided.

ANFSCD: If any of you are readers of the Braves sites, Talking Chop and Battery Power, there are big changes to both sites.
First, Talking Chop has lost both of my favorite writers Alan Carpenter and Jake Mastroianni. Carpenter left a couple months ago for reason’s not made public and Mastroianni left right after the Braves regular season ended to focus more on his growing responsibilities at Locked On Braves. Those guys were co-site editors and their leaving has left a major void. To that end, Eric Cole, long time writer and Deputy Site Manager at Battery Power is moving in to be the new Site Expert, whatever that is. I think that is the new hip title for editor. Veteran writer Fred Owens is still around there, but I miss Carpenter’s sharp opinions and Mastroianni’s keen detail. There are other changes afoot that I’ll mention in a minute.
As for Battery Power, they are obviously losing their leader and a major contributor. As long as Kris Willis leads that bunch though, it’ll still be a quality source for Braves info. I’m still a bit irked that they caved to the woke culture and changed their name to Battery Power from the original Talking Chop moniker. Irked is probably not the right descriptor… disappointed is probably more accurate. It just signaled to me the atmosphere in which the leadership was existing. It’s been a little bit tainted to me ever since. Which transitions nicely to the additional changes at Tomahawk Take to which I earlier alluded. Owens acknowledged in the comment section of one of recent pieces the departure of both Carpenter and Mastroianni. He also let slip that the name “Tomahawk Take” is in line for a change also, to conform to the same woke culture that skewered “Talking Chop”. I’d like to propose that at least informally, can we refer to this haven as Braves and Stuff and Tomahawk Chop? 😉
I do like how the 2 Braves-centric blog sites looked different and had different types of offerings. I’m hoping that they won’t now look like the same thing just in 2 places. But it won’t surprise me. Creativity and uniqueness seem to be giving way to blueprint and conformity.

V, I guess it all comes down to Dansby, and his advisors(family, teammates, etc) the braves (A.A) of course have signed one deal after another that is team friendly. Some just amaze me, as they are leaving serious moola on the table for that security of if they flop 2-3 years later (do a Frenchy, in other words 😉 ) they still have money coming in….anyways, got detracted, by myself 😛
Like FF , for fear of one bad year, AA wouldn’t give FF a 6 year deal (but a pitcher who will be 39, and wasn’t that great, will block a kid and get 20 mil …at 39…focus ber! 😉 )
so…of course AA wants Dansby at the low end of the salary range and for the fewest years possible…have I mentioned a time or 3 that the oft injured Carlos Correa,(4 seasons of 110 or less games, 137 last year) is expected to opt out of 35 mil a year deal cuz only 2 more years? Is Dansby only worth 2/3 rd of what he is? IF some team , say the Twins, knowing he’s a winner, and puts up great numbers offer him that very deal for 3-4 years….just…speculating.
Wouldn’t Dansby want something beyond…34? Team option after that? Mutual? (AA never does that, right?) One year player, then team option? Just seems that 34, then what? He can’t move to 2nd or 3rd, or even 1st….and 34 YO Shortstops don’t get decent deals even if they are still good (that I can think of, can anyone recall one?)
I just really, really hope that AA will bend a bit , if it means keeping him….

There is a great difference between Correa’s $35M deal though. It was offered knowing it was short term/high AAV. The total commitment was still small in relative terms.
As for whether or not Dansby would want more than 6 years, it’s doubtful. Actually, being able to re-enter the FA market at age 34 means he could still get another healthy contract.
so…of course AA wants Dansby at the low end of the salary range and for the fewest years possible
We actually do not know that. While Dansby had a great year in 2022 that rivaled those of fellow FA’s Trea Turner and Correa, Dansby hasn’t done it consistently like those guys have. Dansby isn’t going to command the same kind of overall money. And his game is actually quite different from either of the aforementioned players. Dansby’s greatest attributes are actually working against him now. He isn’t flashy and he doesn’t post eye-popping stats. But he is as steady as they come, hates to lose worse than Stacy Abrams, works as hard as some rookie trying to make the team, and has an innate baseball acumen that translates onto the field. He just has that mysterious “it” factor that you cannot coach and you cannot buy. But you also cannot quantify it and thus he can’t leverage it.
I’ll stick to my belief he’ll get 6 yrs/$130M-$140M, and I’ll also wager Alex will give it up willingly and not grudgingly. I do not believe there will be protracted negotiations all winter. I would even not be surprised if an agreement is announced before the actual FA frenzy begins.

Fred Owens at Tomahawk Take (for now) is reporting that the Braves have re-signed 7 minor league free agents. All were in the Braves system in 2022, so they’re really just coming back for another try. Those signed were pitchers Malcolm Van Buren, Benjamin Dum, Roel Ramirez, and Danny Young. Also signed were catchers Arden Pabst, Ryan Casteel, and Hendrik Clementina. Owens says all but Van Buren played at least part of the season with AAA Gwinnett.

I’m seeing discussion on Keith Law’s Top 50 Free Agent rankings that was apparently just posted at The Athletic. I am not a subscriber, so I cannot attest to it directly. But the interesting note I’m seeing is that he has Dansby Swanson as his #3 ahead of Aaron Judge. Law’s Top 5 are, in order, Trea Turner, Carlos Correa, Swanson, Judge and Xander Bogaerts. It’s obvious that Law has a serious bias toward the SS position. It’s also somewhat worrisome that he may be drinking too heavily and too early.

interesting V (about the ratings of the hard drinkin’ Law (he strikes me as a sea breeze kinda guy 😉 )
Here are Trea Turner’s numbers this season. 160 games, 194 hits, 39 doubles, 21 HR’s 100 RBI’;s 27 steals .298 .343 his WAR? 4.9!
Dansby 162 177 hits 32 doubles 25 HRs 96 RBIs 18 steals .277 .329 5.7 WAR
Correa 136 games, 152 hits, 24 doubles 22 HR’s a whopping 64 RBIs ZERO steals. .291 .366 his WAR? 5.4 yeah, WAR is a joke.
Judges was 10.6, which makes some sense. Guess Keith is thinking he’s too old/big to be good the next 5 -7 years.

∙ 2.17 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 34 saves, 3508 K’s
∙ MLB record 110 shutouts (26.4% of career wins were by shutout)
∙ 2nd highest career WAR (164.3) behind Babe Ruth (182.4)

I found some discussion from a 2006 blog on fastball comparison through the generations of pitchers and came up with some interesting information. First, and most obviously, they did not measure pitch speed by radar in the early 1900’s. Today’s radar guns detect the speed of the pitch coming out of the pitcher’s hand. Tests prior to 1946 measured the speed as it traveled between 60 to 75 feet from the point of release. The only documented record of Johnson’s fastball speed was done with him in street clothes, on flat ground, and throwing through tripwires placed down the path of the pitch. He managed to hit only 3 wires in his test, with the highest speed rated at 83mph. Hardly an accurate measurement, but it’s still pretty impressive given the conditions of the test. More modern analysts have tried to study his pitches using the available film and using clock speed from hand to plate. Their best estimates rank him between 88-91mph. There’s no real way to know exactly how fast his fastball was, but you can see his delivery is like a whip from a sidearm angle. Probably moved like a jitterbug too. If he was at 88mph from that arm angle I bet he was a booger to hit in that era.
Kudos for the find, Ber. That was really fascinating.

I forgot to mention to check out the comments….I have really grown to dislike Ty Cobb , the man, for so very many reasons,….but man, the guy could write!
Quote by Ty Cobb (My Life in Baseball: The True Record, pg. 65):
“On August 2, 1907… I encountered the most threatening sight I ever saw on a ball field… He was a tall, shambling galoot of about twenty with arms so long they hung far out of his sleeves and with a side-arm delivery that looked unimpressive at first glance… The first time I faced him, I watched him take that easy wind-up—and then something went past me that made me flinch. The ball came in so fast that I wondered if he had concealed a gun on his person. I hardly saw the pitch, but I heard it. The thing just hissed with danger. We couldn’t touch him… but every one of us knew we’d met the most powerful arm ever turned loose in a ball park.”
and the next comment supposedly from Ruth and an ump
Johnson struck Babe Ruth out on three straight fastballs. After the third strike Babe asked the umpire, “Did you see any of those pitches?”
“No,” said the ump.
“Neither did I,” said Babe, “but that last one sounded a little low

I have really grown to dislike Ty Cobb , the man, for so very many reasons
Cobb was from a small rural town very close to where I live called Royston. There is a museum there dedicated to him, and some very enlightening material there about the man. First, his reputation for being racist and violent has been mostly debunked by those who check such things. The allegations first appeared in a biography written by a fellow named Al Stump, whose stories about Cobb have subsequently been discredited as sensationalized and were largely proven to be fictional. But Stump sold alot of books, even selling the movie rights, thus many of the lies were perpetuated in the Tommy Lee Jones movie Cobb. But again, those were dramatizations sensationalized to sell movie tickets. Much of it has since been discredited as pure fiction.
The truth is that Cobb was an early sports celebrity, something he embraced and something the general public was not used to in that time. This caused a bit of a backlash among baseball fans and he became the “player fans loved to hate”. He was an early advocate for black players to be allowed to play in MLB. There are many documented quotes given to sportswriters of his time where he spoke often of his desire to see “racial equality in baseball”. That doesn’t mean he was a beacon of racial justice of course. He was after all a man born and raised in rural Georgia in the early 1900’s. But he was not a member of the KKK like fellow HOF’er Tris Speaker. Funny how that isn’t more widely publicized. And Cobb did play the game with great ferocity and passion, including many well documented hard slides into bases, fueling the claim that he was a violent man. But the tales of him sharpening his spikes came out of the Stump biography and were never proven to be factual.
I’ll leave with this quote from an article penned by Vintage Detroit writer Dan Holmes back in 2012:
Many of the things that fans think are true about Cobb stem from the dastardly lies of one man – sportswriter Al Stump – who was commissioned by Ty to help write his autobiography. Stump abused the access he was given by Cobb, stealing personal property from the baseball legend, secretly writing a “tell-all” diary of a sick old man, and making up stuff. It wasn’t until the 1990s that much of what Stump wrote was shown to be absolute BS. Yet, thanks to a movie that was made based on Stump’s months with Cobb, the lies are taken as truths by many, including [Detroit] Tiger fans who seem to want to apologize for Cobb’s greatness instead of seeking the truth.
If you ever get a chance to see the Cobb museum in Royston, I encourage taking advantage of it. It’s a great look into that era of the game and into the real man.

There is a blurb on MLBTR this morning regurgitating the mid-season news that Alex had approached Dansby about an extension before the All-Star break. They offer nothing new of substance but just throw out a speculated lowball number that is not verified by anyone yet looks good if you’re trying to perpetuate the negative emotions surrounding last year’s sensational Freddie event. After all, we know that negative emotions are easier to manipulate if you’re trying to generate clicks, right Mr. Cobb? This is what happens to a rumor site when there is a lull in any real substantive news. They have to post something, so they just gin up old emotions.
Cue the knee-jerk “cheap Braves” and “fire Alex” outbursts. They’ll be everywhere on social media today.

Pure speculation on my part but I see Grossman returning next spring. Also, I still believe young Grissom will start in left field for the Stripers next spring with Ozzie’s return.
As for Dansby, he will go where the misses tells him to go. I think he will sign for less money to stay in Atlanta but not cheap money. The Braves have been pretty fair when they come to the table, Freddie actually signed for less than was offered by the Braves when you drill down on deferred money and all.
On a side note, the Pena kid who replace Correa was a pretty good find for the Astros eh?
Amazing how much better the pitching looks when they are not tipping pitches.

Lots of opt outs already: Jacob deGrom, Taijuan Walker, Xander Bogaerts, Carlos Correa, Carlos Rodón, Jurickson Profar, and Robert Suarez. Two big names that are expected to join the group are Justin Verlander and Anthony Rizzo.
Weeee! The stove is about to be LIT!

As a reminder, the 9 2022 Braves are now free agents. Those are: Dansby Swanson, Kenley Jansen, Robbie Grossman, Adam Duvall, Ehire Adrianza, Luke Jackson, Jesse Chavez, Darren O’Day and Jay Jackson.
IMO, the Braves will seek to re-sign Dansby, Kenley, Luke and Jesse. I think they’ll try hard for Dansby and make a fair offer to Kenley but not get in any bidding war. I think LuJack, returning from TJ surgery, will probably come back on a 1-year deal. And if you were Jesse Chavez, why would you not come back to Atlanta? It’s the only team on which you have success. They might make a cursory offer to Grossman, but probably will look for cheaper players for the bench. Duvey, Adrianza, O’Day and JayJack are goners unless they would take a minor league deal.

Braves arb eligible players, and my opinion of their tender status…
Max Fried: long term deal candidate
A.J. Minter: tender; easy call
Mike Soroka: tender; legitimate 5th starter candidate
Guillermo Heredia: goner
Tyler Matzek: Hate to say it… goner.
Silvino Bracho: Who? Goner.

Will Smith is a World Series champion again
I saw he was back on the roster for the W.S. but he never pitched in the series…amazing….can’t believe they didn’t use him against Bryce …can’t believe they won a world series without a lefty reliever…guessing that will be the last time we see that happen.

Not gonna go through the whole Rule 5 rigmarole. Seems like we spend alot of energy on that every year and for no real purpose. Suffice to say the team will need to protect some guys and they’ll do so. Alex doesn’t take R5 guys. He will probably not even attend the draft. Roster management will be a little tricky, thus the aforementioned non-tenders of 3 guys, and the disinclination to re-sign another 5. The good thing is that AA doesn’t need to make many new additions.

Bold prediction: Alex will attach a prospect to Marcell Ozuna and send him packing to another city. He simply clutters up the active roster with no appreciable benefit. Even a bad pitcher can be used in a mop up capacity to save other arms. Marcell can’t even do that.

Yes, likely the Braves will also kick in some cash to go along with the players.

Regarding the Dansby Swanson negotiations…
I think that Alex and Dansby’s agent Casey Close learned some very important lessons last year. Alex learned that a slam dunk is not a score until the ball goes all the way through the hoop. Close learned that you cannot play chicken with Alex. I think each will approach the other with a new respect. I think that separates this negotiation from that of last year, and I think that bodes well for both sides.

this could be an odd offseason for the braves…IF the braves get Dansby signed…it doesn’t leave many moves, unless there is some crazy deal to be made and/or Free Agent pitcher to sign. Really wish they’d move on from Kenley…I almost want Will Smith back…

Need to re-sign Dansby. Need to sort out LF. Need to flesh out bench.
Regarding the bench, don’t forget that Manny Piña will be back if he’s not traded. That could free up William Contreras to be a full time DH. Gotta move on from Marcell. Gotta.

Way too early guess at the 2023 Opening Day roster:
LINEUP:
Ronald Acuña, RF (R)
Michael Harris II, CF (L)
Matt Olson, 1B (L)
Austin Riley, 3B (R)
Travis d’Arnaud, C (R)
Joc Pederson, LF (L)
Dansby Swanson, SS (R)
Eddie Rosario, DH (L)
Ozzie Albies, 2B (S)
BENCH:
William Contreras, C/DH (R)
Vaughn Grissom, UTIL (R)
Orlando Arcia, IF (R)
Sam Hilliard, OF (L)
ROTATION:
Max Fried (L)
Kyle Wright (R)
Spencer Strider (R)
Charlie Morton (R)
Mike Soroka (R) [or Madison Bumgarner. See below.]
BULLPEN:
Raisel Iglesias (R)
AJ Minter (L)
Kirby Yates (R)
Matt Strahm (L)
Jackson Stephens (R)
Dylan Lee (L)
Colin McHugh (R)
Jesse Chavez (R)
Notes: Marcell Ozuna is gone. I have Rosario listed as the DH, but it could be Rosario, Contreras, even Grissom. There are options, which is a good thing. There aren’t many additions here, but there doesn’t need to be. Dansby is back; Jesse is back, Joc is sort of back, and Matt Strahm is signed to take Tyler Matzek’s spot. In a sense, Kirby Yates is back, but from an injury standpoint and not from a contractual standpoint. The only trades I foresee is in the subtraction category, such as Ozuna (plus a prospect) and Manny Piña. I think Piña’s too good of a trade chip to just sit on when you have the d’Arnaud/Contreras tandem already proven. And I don’t think you’re getting back a ML player but more likely mid-level prospect. As for Ozuna, you’ll probably have to take back a contract, but hopefully not too much depending on the prospect that goes with him. I suppose a straight bad contract swap is possible, but only for a pitcher which would be bad luck for Soroka. ARI is reportedly looking to rid themselves of Madison Bumgarner. Their money is a virtual wash, so perhaps attaching someone like Braden Shewmake to the deal would make it work.

Upon further contemplation, I doubt that Alex will spend the $$ necessary to bring in a guy like Matt Strahm to the bullpen. He has to spend big to bring Dansby back already. Fixing LF will also require some spending. The bullpen may have to be fleshed out internally. Big lefty Kyle Muller is a good candidate. His chances of cracking the rotation are not very high and he’s already spent a couple of years at AAA. It may be time for him to make the move to the pen.

Free agent dark horse for the Braves:
OF Michael Conforto. Conforto did not receive the long term deal he was expecting in FA last year, partially because of high expectations, partially because of the QO attachment, but mostly because it was revealed he had incurred a shoulder injury during offseason workouts that required surgery. Now fully recovered and without the aforementioned QO, he should find a more receptive market. Still, there will be questions because of the injury and a full year out of the game. That adds up to the kind of player that Alex loves to target on a 1-year, high AAV deal ala Josh Donaldson. I could see it.

I thought Conforto was a pretty good player from what I saw of him with the Mets. You just never know who, where or when AA will strike. I would be leery of the shoulder injury however, it does seem to limit the effective throwing.

I’ve heard it suggested that if the Braves do not re-sign Dansby (for whatever reason) that they would not pivot to a Carlos Correa or Trae Turner or Xander Bogaerts. They would instead target those kind of $$ into LF. Personally I do not believe that Dansby will leave Atlanta, but should that happen I think they would be better served to invest in the wider market that can be found in the OF. Names mentioned: Michael Conforto, Joey Gallo, Mitch Haniger, Jurickson Profar, Andrew Benintendi, Michael Brantley, AJ Pollock, Brandon Nimmo, listed in the order that I perceive as probability to sign here.
I think that is all academic though. I think Dansby is back. I think LF will have to come cheaper since Eddie Rosario is gonna suck up $9M to not start.

Here’s something kinda crazy. If the 2023 season were starting today, this is the roster that the Braves would carry into Opening Day:
LINEUP:
Ronald Acuña, RF (R)
Michael Harris II, CF (L)
Austin Riley, 3B (R)
Matt Olson, 1B (L)
Travis d’Arnaud, C (R)
William Contreras, DH (R)
Ozzie Albies, 2B (S)
Eddie Rosario, LF (L)
Vaughn Grissom, SS (R)
BENCH:
Manny Piña, C (R)
Orlando Arcia, UTIL (R)
Marcell Ozuna, OF (R)
Sam Hilliard, OF (L)
ROTATION:
Max Fried (L)
Kyle Wright (R)
Spencer Strider (R)
Charlie Morton (R)
Mike Soroka / Bryce Elder / Ian Anderson (R)
BULLPEN:
Raisel Iglesias (R)
AJ Minter (L)
Kirby Yates (R)
Kyle Muller (L)
Jackson Stephens (R)
Dylan Lee (L)
Colin McHugh (R)
Mike Soroka / Bryce Elder / Ian Anderson (R)
I have to say… I think that roster is still a playoff roster. Would it get over the hump? Hard to say. But I think it could conceivably win the division as things currently stand. Obviously we do not know who the other teams are going to add. I’ve hear rumor that the Phillies are going hard after Trae Turner, and I could definitely see that. I’m sure the Mets will spend alot of money on someone.
Even if all the Braves do is get Dansby back in the clubhouse, I’d feel OK about the team. I’d still like a little better option in LF though. And I’d like a better LH bat off the bench than Hilliard. But if they can upgrade LF, Rosario can be that LF bench bat. Ozuna really clogs things up, though. We need Hilliard on the bench since he plays all 3 OF spots well. Ozuna plays 0 well, and just 1 if pressed. Maddening.

all the moola talk still makes me scratch my head about Morton…got 2 good kids (oh, and 2 other kids, injured or regressed) … I know, I KNOW! A.A. Loves 1 year deals, giving him flexibility year to year, and Morton is really liked by management, justifiably ….just wish they had waited til the offseason, you know?

On the surface it does seem like a head scratcher a bit, but even coming off a broken leg he still tossed 172 innings and notched 205 K’s along the way, tied for 9th best in all of MLB. Only Max Fried (185.1) and Kyle Wright (180.1) threw more innings for the home team. At a time when getting a pitcher through 5 innings is considered a quality start, having a durable 172 inning worthy veteran was a valuable asset. The 205 K’s didn’t hurt anything either.

SITE POLL:
I am curious. If I could insert one of those cool poll things that you could click and get a nice visual graph or something, I’d do it. But since there are really only a handful of us here anyway, why even go through those motions? Plus, this way we can give reasons and generate discussion. So here is the question:
If you are Alex, and you can only spend big to fill one need, where do you spend it and why?
I’ll start. If it’s me, I go big at SS and stay in-house everywhere else.
I’m perfectly comfortable with the pitching options I have. I know I have 4 of 5 in my rotation already set (barring injury) and I know that I have Bryce Elder, Mike Soroka, and Ian Anderson all with a record of success at various times in MLB. And this doesn’t discount AA from signing a guy on the cheap to compete either. But I think I can compete with this rotation. I have a Cy Young candidate at #1, a 20 game winner at #2, and a ROY at #3. I back that up at #4 with a battle tested and durable veteran who misses alot of bats with a nasty curveball. I don’t feel so bad.
I think I can live with LF. Would I prefer a bigger and steadier bat? Well, yeah. But I am already paying Eddie Rosario $9M and I need a long term landing spot for Vaughn Grissom. I think LF is it. And I think Grissom will prove to be a good player there eventually so I’m not blocking him there. (Do they still send players to winter ball to learn new positions?) Also… I have this kid at AAA named Justyn-Henry
Malloy who just finished up in the AFL by making the league All-Star team. He’s another Vandy product (Dansby, Kyle?) drafted in 2021 (6th round). He’s 22 years old and sizeable at 6’3″/212 lbs. He’s got good bat speed and good “bat to ball” skills and is just growing into his potential power. He’s not a fast runner and he’s not an elite fielder so LF/DH is his future. He’ll most certainly start the season in AAA, but he could be a factor in LF at some point in the near future. He’s a riser in the system.
Now… SS. There is much, much speculation on the web about this topic. In fact, it doesn’t matter what your opinion is, you can find some “expert” somewhere that will share the same ideas. I’ve heard some say that Dansby deserves the same money as the other top SS in the market (Correa/Turner/Bogaerts), and I’ve heard some say he’s not worth more than what Matt Olson is getting. I’ve even heard some say, “If you have to pay Dansby $25M/yr why wouldn’t you up it a bit and give Correa $30M/yr for elite talent?” I can answer that question. I want that $5M in flexibility to spend at the deadline. For me, Dansby is elite talent, and he fits this team and this clubhouse perfectly. He is proven. Why force something else? I’m on record with my prediction here, but I’ll narrow it even more. I say 6 years / $138M with a team option on year 7 at $25M.
I say pay Dansby, bring him back, roll with your in-house pitchers and LF, and contend again with a proven formula.

To be clear, I hope that Alex can spend on more than just one position. The above question was just academic. My hope is that Alex can re-sign Dansby, bring in a stopgap LF on a short commitment, and make pitching additions as a third tier priority. I also hope he can get Marcell out of the clubhouse, even if it means paying a hefty portion of his contract. Dude eats up a valuable roster spot. The money is already a sunk cost, but the dead roster spot isn’t.

Something I keep overlooking is that Jake Odorizzi is still a member of this team unless he chooses to not be. He still holds that player option for 2023. That option is for $12.5M with a $6.5M buyout. In other words, the Braves will have to pay him at least $6.5M even if he leaves to go someplace else.
Quite honestly, I’ll be surprised if he stays here. Why would he? The difference between the option value and the buyout is just $6M. He’ll get more than that for 2023 on a deal somewhere, so the total dollar value should be more if he chooses to leave. But I suppose stranger things have happened. Maybe he likes it here and wants to be on a contender.
It was my understanding that such option decisions are supposed to be made by tomorrow, so perhaps we’ll have more clarity then.
Tomorrow is also the deadline for all QO decisions and the day that full on FA frenzy begins. My hope is that Alex and Dansby hold a press conference before he hits the open market.

I agree with Ber that this offseason will be alot different for us Braves fans as our needs are really alot fewer that usual. There’s no need for us to list out all the available OF’s and available starters and available closer, etc.
I do think we should keep an eye on the SS market and perhaps a couple of OF’s like Michael Conforto and Mitch Haniger, guys who might come in on a short commitment. Maybe even a guy like Wil Myers, who would make for an interesting platoon partner with Eddie Rosario. The thing with Myers, though, is that his splits are fairly similar against both righties and lefties. And Myers is a solid fielder who can also backup 1B, which has great value IMO. If you’re looking for a LF on the cheap, you could do worse than Myers.

Good morning Stuffians, Braves saved a couple of million by trading Jake Odorize to Texas for lefty Kolby Allard. Kolby is 25 and was the Braves 1st round pick in 2015. Perhaps the Braves pitching staff can return him to his perceived potential.

Most importantly, they cleared a potential $12.5M from counting against their luxury tax total. Do not undersell the importance of that. In fact, it may have been the prime motivation. Kolby Allard is still pre-arb.

BTW, Odorizzi had surprisingly opted to exercise his $12.5M player option, which triggered the trade.

Would the Braves re-sign Swanson? As stated above, I do believe this will happen. But it’s going to take some time because it seems like the Braves are willing to allow Swanson to get a feel for his market value. We might have to wait for Turner and Correa to get their big deals before getting a sense of what Swanson and Bogaerts could get.
My expectation is the Braves will not make the highest offer to Swanson. But that won’t necessarily matter. In hindsight, Freeman would have taken less to remain in Atlanta. But he didn’t keep himself in control of his negotiations like Swanson will while working with Excel Sports, the agency Freeman fired this past summer.
My guess is Swanson ends up back with the Braves on a six-year, $123 million deal. Like Chipper Jones did multiple times, Swanson will leave some money on the table to secure himself the satisfaction of remaining where he wants to be. And he’ll do so with about $5 million more per year than I’d have anticipated at the start of this year.
Dansby is in a unique position to be a Braves lifer and legend. Chipper pulled that off. Freddie let it slip away. Even the likes of Smoltz, Glavine, Murphy, Niekro, and Aaron cannot lay claim to that status. But Chipper understood and actively held onto it. And his words of wisdom to Freddie last year indicated his position on it: “If you want to play in Atlanta, you play in Atlanta. You maybe take a little less to be happy and play in a place that is comfortable for you.” He also said, “Free agency isn’t always about money. It’s about being able play where you want to play.”
What makes this even more pertinent to Dansby is that he’s a local guy, having grown up just a Bo Jackson throw away from Truist Park. Now I’m not suggesting that Dansby is gonna win a couple of MVP’s and be a HOF’er one day. But he was the key acquisition that triggered the upswing of the rebuild, and he has been the homegrown golden boy ever since. He symbolizes the new era of success and he is the undisputed leader, “The Sheriff”, in the clubhouse. He doesn’t have to be Chipper Jones to be a Braves legend… he just has to be Dansby Swanson and stay home. And I promise you he won’t have to shop at Big Lots to remain here. He’ll still get his. I hope to one day see Dansby and his multiple kids being honored in the middle of the diamond for a long and prosperous career spent wholly in a Braves uni. He’ll have deserved it. And that’s one thing you cannot buy with a few extra million greenbacks.

Tonkin and Elledge are former ML relievers stashed at AAA. They were likely added as part of their minor league deals to retain their rights and provide flexibility. We all know that there will be 40-man rosters spots open up as non-tenders are announced and other moves are made. This just simply provides more options.

I’ve been reading alot about the Braves with respect to payroll and the Competitive Balance Tax. What I was not aware of is that the CBT threshold is calculated on the AAV’s of all players under contract, not the actual dollar value from year to year. So even though the Braves are currently right around $200M (with estimated arb salaries included) in 2023 payroll, their CBT figure is closer to $220M. This means that they are only about $10M from being payors for the first time… before making any additions such as bringing back Dansby.
They have few options to keep from busting through the threshold. They can attach a couple of decent prospects to Marcell Ozuna in an effort to get a team to take on some portion of his deal. The better the prospects, the better the percentage. That deal needs to go away, or at least a portion of it. If you can get someone to take on half of his $16.25M tax hit, then you make some significant progress. You can trade Manny Piña, which I think they’re gonna do anyway. His tax hit is $4M. The goal would be to take back a prospect that could either be flipped with Ozuna or fill the gap left by one. They can non-tender Guillermo Heredia, Silvino Bracho and Tyler Matzek and lop off another $4M. Theoretically you could now have about $29M before hitting the CBT threshold.
Will they cross the line? I think they could, at least this year. As I understand it, the way the CBT works is the first tier of the CBT for 2023 is $233M-$253M. Teams that cross that $233 line for the first time would pay a 20% tax on everything over the threshold. In other words, if the Braves went over by $10M, they would pay $2M in penalties. Over the grand scheme of the team payroll, is $2M going to be prohibitive? Not likely. Where it gets more dicey is if you are repeat offenders or you cross the $253M threshold. Then the cost begins to make a bigger mark.
But as for 2023, those that believe that the CBT will prevent the Braves from making any moves, that just doesn’t seem realistic to me.

V, your argument works too, I just don’t get the Correa>Dansby talk.
Correa
109 24 84 .315
110 15 65 .239
75 21 59 279
58(Strike year) 5 25 (yep!) .264
148 26 92 .279
136 22 64 .291
Yep, from 2017 to 2022, do you see a pattern? He misses A TON of game, every year. only 1 year did he hit above .300. .279 career BA. Only advantage over Dansby is a more walks and strikes out less. Dansby steals a few bases, Correa never does.

It kind of makes you wonder how Correa merited $30 million per… It also helps to understand how the Astros passed on Correa when the bidding got too high. Worked out okay for the Astros too given that Pena played pretty well in his place. It’s nice to have options.

Just to be clear, I do not advocate for Correa over Dansby. In fact, I’m the opposite. I don’t think any of the “elite” SS candidates are a better fit for the Braves than Dansby for a number of reasons. As for that specific notion, I would not pay Correa $5M more a season. #1, I don’t think he’s worth it. #2, there are those lingering CBT concerns and that additional $5M could be used to help out in LF, the bullpen, etc.

I used to be a big fan of MLBTR and still like it to a certain extent, but it’s not the go-to resource that it once was. In its early years it was a great place to pick up whispers and rumors that were reported in smaller markets and compiled in one easy to access location. But as they grew, their focus turned more toward straight reporting of items that generally speaking were already available elsewhere. I suppose that could be attributed to a certain degree to the greater user accessibility of the same information that MLBTR used to compile and present. But I also believe that the site changed focus as founder Tim Dierkes stepped back into a more executive role and the writers exerted more influence… in particular long time contributor Steve Adams. In fact, it is Adams who took the lead on this year’s Top 50 Free Agents With Predictions feature that had historically been Dierkes’ annual return to the trenches. This year, Dierkes is just one of four writers contributing to the opinions. And this year, Adams is showing the individual choices, not just one consensus pick. But I cannot help but wonder if Adams also influenced any of said choices. I say that because Adams has admitted to being anti-Braves. He simply does not like the Braves for some reason or another. And he’s said it more than once.
Which brings me back around to this year’s prediction scheme which just dropped this morning. I always look forward to that feature coming out because I’m curious to see what the prevailing sentiment is on many of the free agents, particularly those exiting or hopefully joining the Braves. Where I feel that the anti-Braves bent may have really been most glaring was in the treatment of Dansby Swanson, of whom none of the four picked coming back to ATL. (I’ll show their prediction below. Don’t go there if you don’t want to spoil the original piece on the MLBTR site.) The only mention of the Braves in the entire section was “Atlanta reportedly offered him an extension in the vicinity of $100MM at some point during the season. That didn’t get the job done, and Swanson can now head to the market.” Do I recall saying a couple of weeks ago that Jon Heyman’s click-bait tweet would be taken as gospel and repeated as gospel throughout the offseason? Well, here that rumor is stated as fact and used as reasoning to eliminate Atlanta from any consideration of a reunion.
In fact, Atlanta is mentioned only 3 times in the entire feature among 4 writers for 50 predictions, 2 being on respective cheap relievers and 1 being on an over-the-hill and underperforming starter.
Bollocks.
This to me is proof that MLBTR has in itself become an attention seeking click-bait farm for the ill-informed.
SPOILER ALERT: Do not go any further if you don’t want to see their comclusions on Dansby.
Seven years, $154MM.
Steve: Cubs / Tim: Cubs / Anthony: Cubs / Darragh: Twins
They are wrong. He’ll return to Atlanta for 6 years, $138M w/ 7th year option at $25M bringing the total potential deal to 7 years, $163M and exceeding the MLBTR short-sighted prediction.

There is some interesting discussion in the feature’s comments section about the SS snub for Atlanta, most particularly the rebuttal by Steve Adams. He admits that he waffled between ATL/CHC before choosing the Cubs. His rational is all payroll based. All that said, the discussion is fairly thought provoking at the very least. And the trade market is also raised, but I can’t see the Braves having the trade capital necessary to land a Willy Adames. But I have to admit, one commenter makes a good argument when he notes that “10 teams who might be interested in the big 4 SS: Phillies, Giants, Twins, Dodgers, Cubs, Angels, Mariners, Braves, Orioles, Rockies, and there are probably more”. That is a relevant statement that is at least concerning since most of not all of them would and could outbid Atlanta in a bidding war.
I think the Phillies will sign Trea Turner and I believe the Giants will quickly pivot to Carlos Correa of they are out of the Aaron Judge lottery. I have no idea on Xander Bogaerts, although I’ve kind of thought he could be signed here if Dansby bolts. That said, I still believe Dansby is the preference by far. If pressed, I’d lean toward Seattle who is very close and has money to spend this winter. I also think that LA will take a long, hard look at Dansby… and that concerns me. But they do have Gavin Lux who is ML ready and could simply take over there… especially if LA jumps in the Judge derby. The wild card in the whole thing could be Chicago, who honestly could edge out the Braves if it comes down to dollars. I can’t believe I just sort of agreed with Steve Adams. This is not a good day.

Why should they, MLBTR, be any different than any other current media offering? I don’t trust anything any of them say, or print. There is a very good reason for my distrust, just as a known perjurer is considered an unreliable witness in a trial, the national media has shown its true colors and thus is ignored by this consumer.
As for who is signed where and for how much, it is all conjecture at this point and one’s opine is just as good as any other. In the immortal words of Mark Twain, a person who doesn’t read newspapers is ill informed, a person who does is misinformed.”
This is where we are at this point with Dansby. He will go where he wants to go in the end as he will have options. I cannot blame him for wanting to test the waters of free agency, after all, it has played out this long so what has it got to lose?
Would I like for the Braves to bring him back? Sure but not at a cost that restricts the organization from the flexibility of fielding a World Series contending team. Agents will always do what is in their own best interest, not necessarily the best interest of the player, it is simply the rule of nature to look out for one’s own best interest.
So, let the games begin. After all, there are very few Chipper Jones in organizations today. Like Dansby has said, it is just business…

Here is yet another Steve Adams rebuttal on what looks like some shabby treatment of the Braves. Apparently it struck more nerves than just mine.
Commenter: Kinda shocked how little they believe the Braves will make even lower tier moves. I’m in the boat they will have to make a move for SS or LF. Can’t not fill either.
Adams: Not picking them to sign a major free agent doesn’t mean they’ll do nothing. The trade market exists, and there are plenty of good players who aren’t in the top 50. Plus, we listed the Braves as plausible landing spots for plenty of these guys. I had Haniger on the Braves at one point, and a few SP better than Kluber. Dansby, too.
I personally put Rogers and Kluber there in the end, but it’s entirely plausible that they re-sign Dansby, trade for a left fielder and sign a better SP than Kluber, for instance.
There are a million scenarios that can play out; we try our best in each player write-up to provide kind of a snapshot of the market, but at the end of the day, you’re only putting down one team for the player.
The Braves’ massive payroll outlay played into my decision to project more modest FA spending and feel that they might instead do some heavy lifting on the trade market.
That’s a plausible outlook on paper. What he is overlooking are the unmeasurable elements Dansby brings to this organization, not the least of which his commanding leadership and hometown hero status. Those have value not quantified nor remunerated in just dollars.
He also overlooks the fact that the Braves no longer posses the trade capital required to make any really meaningful moves. Manny Piña will not bring back a viable SS or LF. Is he looking at Bryce Elder, Kyle Muller or Jared Shuster? Those guys are necessary pieces to the Braves future (and to some degree present) on the field. No… the Braves are not in a position to make an impactful trade unless they want to trade Vaughn Grissom, and he’s the only real backup plan we have at SS at present. The Braves are pretty much restricted to whom they can afford in FA.

Just to be clear, I do not advocate for Correa over Dansby.
V, oh gosh no, never thought that, was just commenting on what others were saying…
I just think he’s amazingly overrated. A few really good ,though injury riddled years. But, he was the overall #1 pick, the guy that basically brought the Astros into legitimacy . I mean, they rated him higher than Turner, I think because of the slight age difference, but Turner is sooo much better, it isn’t even funny. He and FF are basically the only 2 true .300 hitters, year after year (I could be forgetting someone) I know that’s not the biggest thing anymore, but I do think hits are kinda important.
He’s also the best basestealer in baseball (230 steals, only caught 42 times) I think he’s still the fastest guy in baseball. In fact, IF Dansby went to the Dodgers, or San Fran, and since perhaps Turner wants to be closer to the east coast,(he’s from Florida) the braves really would make the most sense
have to throw some fire on the ol wood stove, right ? 😉

also, while just spitballin’….remember when we (ok, maybe only me) thought that Ozzie seemed more like a “real” SS than Dansby? Some think Bogarts isn’t a very good SS (but had good defensive numbers if you believe that. B…horse hockey)
perhaps have Ozzie and Bogarts switch? Or Even just move Ozzie to SS and keep Grissom at 2nd?

It just dawned on me that the position I’m taking on Dansby is very close to the exact same as I took last year with Freddie… from which I was gut punched.
To that end, perhaps I’d be wiser to go ahead and resign myself to the opinion that he’s a goner. Then I can poke around speculating on whom might fill the gap and be pleasantly surprised if I’m wrong, instead of being in some sort of suspended state of anticipation and refreshing Twitter every 5 minutes hoping to see that he’s finally re-upped.

Alex strikes early and signs reliever Nick Anderson last night to a 1-year split deal that will pay him $875K in the big leagues and $180K in the minors. Anderson was a top reliever in 2019-2020 for the Rays before the dreaded elbow injury that required TJ. Upon his return to a rehab assignment last August, he was shut down with plantar fasciitis.
When he’s healthy, he has the potential to be a shut down back end reliever. In 2019-2020 he had a ridiculous 42.2% K rate. This acquisition is very similar to the Kirby Yates grab, and if both of those guys come close to their career form, the bullpen could again be the best in baseball.
To accommodate Anderson on the 40-man roster, IF Rylan Bannon was DFA’d.

V, I hear ya! I mean, I think it was pretty obvious, FF was my favorite (active) brave. He suffered thru all the crappy years, he was the guy hugging everyone in the dugout, just seems like a great guy. After nearly every single player on the team said post WS the braves HAD to re-sign him, I was SURE, (Just like I was that Trump would have to win against an aged career criminal) A.A. was just going to have to take a chance, and sign him even if…1 year at the end he might not be good.
Nope.
So….after that… Dansby became the guy I am sure they have to re-sign…but, I would say it’s 50/50 right now. And because of that, it wont’ be complete gut punched. But one of these days, A.A. is going to find out certain guys are glue/winners, and you can’t just plug and play anyone in there and win
Thank goodness the Marlins are check, cuz if they really improved their offense, 4 teams would have legit odds to win the division.

Just thinking out loud, so to speak… I wonder if newly re-acquired lefty Kolby Allard would be a good fit for the bullpen, which is currently in need of an additional southpaw? Even though he struggled in Texas as a starter, he still posted pretty good strikeout totals. Maybe his swing-and-miss stuff would play up better as a reliever. He relies most heavily on a 4-seam fastball that does generate whiffs, but it sits in the low-90’s with only average movement. His best pitch is his cutter, which has greater movement than most, but there’s a big drop in velo from his fastball. He also throws a change and a curve, both considered average. Perhaps if he were to concentrate more on the fastball/cutter combo in shorter bursts he might be able to play that fastball up a bit and take advantage of the cutter? I dunno. Just pondering.

Finding the best fit for a pitcher has been a bit of a conundrum for many ball clubs. It seems in today’s game, going five innings has become the acceptable norm. That means 4 pitchers a night for most clubs. That will burn out a bullpen PDQ.
I’m okay with low 90s fastballs if that can be thrown consistently for strikes and has movement. Haven’t we seen too many fire ballers who throw laser straight offerings which end up in the seats far too often.
Give me a guy who can keep the ball off the sweet spot any day. Now, if only the Braves can fix Soroka and Ian Anderson by next spring.

I don’t think Mike Soroka needs fixing, just mending. Anderson, on the other hand, might be the guy that goes away with Marcell Ozuna.
Back to Soroka… for my money, he has the inside track on the #5 spot. Well, if he can be and stay healthy he does, anyway.
And just musing because, why not? I’m imagining a rotation of Cy Young candidate Max Fried, 20 game winner Kyle Wright, impending ROY Spencer Strider, determined veteran Charlie Morton, and a resurgent and healthy Mike Soroka. I’m gonna say it… if that rotation was in place and healthy, the Braves would be the team to beat in the east regardless of how we fill SS and LF. Let’s not forget that there are current or recent All-Star players at every other position on the field.

This week is set to be a busy one for the suits in the nice corner offices at Truist Park.
Tomorrow (Nov. 15) is the deadline for teams to add eligible minor leaguers to the 40-man roster to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft. The Braves have a full 40-man at the moment, so this is going to be some tricky ground to cover. There are 3 guys that are pretty much locks to be added in P’s Darius Vines and Roddery Munoz, and SS Braden Shewmake. The only other guy I could foresee the Braves wanting to protect would be P Indigo Diaz. This is a kid with the infamous “electric” stuff that might be stashed in someone’s bullpen if they wanted to take a flyer on big potential. I think the Braves will probably protect him and let a lesser guy go on out the door.
Friday (Nov. 18) is the deadline to offer or non-tender arb and pre-arb contracts. This actually sort of goes hand in hand with tomorrow’s R5 deadline as some of these non-tenders will need to be made to open up the necessary 40-man roster spots. As I’ve said a few times, I believe the trade for OF Sam Hilliard was the early signal that sword wielding Guillermo Heredia will be non-tendered. And as much as like like him as a person and as a pitcher, Tyler Matzek is a prime candidate to be non-tendered, perhaps with a handshake agreement that he’ll be extended a minor-league deal to stay in the system while rehabbing from TJ, and be allowed to compete for a ML roster spot in 2024 when healthy. The other guy that I think is going to be non-tendered is reliever Silvino Bracho. Who? Exactly. The Braves selected him for an appearance late in the season after picking him up from the Red Sox in mid-season for the oft-swapped “cash considerations” after the Sox had DFA’d him. That will effectively open up 3 spots for the aforementioned Vines, Shewmake and Munoz. It’ll be interesting to see who loses a job to make way for Diaz.
One has to wonder why the non-tender date shouldn’t precede the R5 protection date. But it is MLB after all.

V, as for Kolby Allard , funny I thought of Tyler M. when his name came up….have no idea how comparable they are, but looking at Allard’s numbers….in 2021 he was terrible in the majors 3-12, 5.41 ERA. Yet check out these numbers 124 innings, 128 hits, only 31 walks, 104 strikeouts. 29 homers. Oh, and 17 of the 32 games he was a starter.
in 2022 10 games in Texas, no starts 7.29 era in 21 innings. His numbers in AAA were 4.65 in 20 games (all starts) 89 innings, a tick up in walks, 38 , but 113 strikeouts…
Seems primed to be fixed, he’s only 24

One thing I should mention, while pitching is important, being strong up the middle has a lot to do with that. Unless you a arms that can strike out everyone, defense is important.
Also look for lefty bats to improve their batting averages with MLB doing away with the short fielders in left.

Well, the A’s yesterday outrighted a top prospect pitcher to AAA after successfully passing him through waivers. Daulton Jefferies underwent TJ toward the end of the 2022 season and will obviously miss all of 2023 recovering and rehabbing.
The Rays meanwhile released pitcher Brendan McKay yesterday with hopes of re-signing him to a minor league deal. He is a former 4th overall pick dealing with injuries, most recently TJ surgery that will cost him all of 2023.
Do those sound familiar? This is what I foresee with Tyler Matzek. This is why I believe he’ll be non-tendered in hopes of bringing him back on a minor league deal.

I neglected to mention that today is also the deadline for FA’s to accept or reject Qualifying Offers. I didn’t forget, rather didn’t deem it relevant to our local boys here as Dansby was the only one to receive a QO, and he will unquestionably reject it.
In fact, there is only one FA who received said QO that will likely accept it, that being Joc Pederson. I along with most who follow such things was totally surprised to see that Joc even received the QO. And at $19.65M, he’d be a fool to turn it down. He won’t. Dodgers lefty Tyler Anderson and Rangers lefty Martin Perez have each been rumored to be considering accepting their respective QO, but it’s also reported that Perez and the Rangers are negotiating a longer term deal. I could see Anderson accepting, but I also think he could get more years elsewhere even if for a lesser AAV. But none of this makes any impact on Atlanta and Dansby. It’s just something to occupy our space until we get any real news on the impending roster juggling.

“Ron Washington, the Braves third-base coach and venerable infield guru, is back home in New Orleans, keeping up with baseball news and hoping the team re-signs shortstop Dansby Swanson. But he’s also doing something else — intensive one-on-one work with Vaughn Grissom, prepping the youngster to take over for Swanson if needed.
“I don’t think Dansby is replaceable unless they go get a superstar,” Washington said Tuesday. “But we can handle the position. We’ve got (Orlando) Arcia, and we’ve got Grissom — that kid is getting better and better every day. He’s here in New Orleans right now, and I’m telling you, he’s improving big-time.”
If it wasn’t apparent there’s a very real possibility Swanson will leave as a free agent, it should be now. The Braves sent Grissom from his home in Orlando, Florida, to New Orleans on Sunday to work with “Wash,” the first of three planned one-week sessions designed for one thing: to get the 21-year-old ready to play shortstop on a regular basis in the majors.
Grissom is staying in a downtown hotel and working out for about three hours each day with Washington at New Orleans Youth Academy, which is operated by MLB. Washington recently told Braves president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos that he could get Grissom ready to play shortstop by spring training.
“That’s why they’re giving me time with him right now — to get him right,” Washington said. “Get him thinking right, getting him to understand the nuances of being a shortstop, the things you have to do, the way you have to go about your business. You know, he’s a young kid. A young kid that’s just used to going out there, putting the gloves on and playing. There’s a lot more to playing defense than just putting the glove on and going out there, and if the ball comes to you, you catch it.
“So I’m taking this opportunity to instill as much as I possibly can in him, so that when we hit spring training, if it so happens that we don’t sign Dansby back, we have some options. We also have Arcia. So we’ve got some options. But this kid (Grissom) has got some upside. And we’ve got to have him ready for whatever may go down.”
Washington added: “I hope we don’t lose Dansby. But that’s a decision Alex and Snit (manager Brian Snitker) have to sit down and talk about and make a decision on. But we want to make sure that we have all our options available if it don’t go the way we would like it to go.” DOB, The Athletic 11/17/22

Also, if the Braves would be making a trade for an established SS, then Grissom is a guy that will have to headline it, and 29 other teams need to know he’s a guy that can be a competent SS. Not advocating it, just considering for all outcomes.

Liberty Media planning to split off Braves into independent, publicly-traded entity
Bottom line… the Braves as a business organization including all of the related real estate holdings, i.e. The Battery, etc. would become an independent company with Liberty Media as majority shareholders, but publicly traded with numerous investors. I’m not sure how this affects the hierarchy of decision making, but Terry McGuirk and Liberty Media have insisted for ages that McGuirk is the final say in the Braves operations. I suppose this assertion will now be put to the test, eh? Also this will take place in the first half of 2023, so it’s coming soon.
It’s a bit of uncharted territory for MLB, so it’ll be interesting to see how the suits in the MLB offices react to it.
In a related story, at the same Investor Day conference in which Liberty Media made this announcement, President and CEO Greg Maffei was quoted as saying this about Braves payroll: “I fully expect to be in the top five. We can afford it.”
I think we can end speculation as to whether or not McGuirk actually meant it when he said it a few weeks back. Now the Big Guy has also said it. For perspective, that would slot the Braves just below the Dodgers and just above the Phillies as things currently sit. Of course, those names could change over the next few weeks, but the meaning is still the same. The Braves have now gone on record twice in the last few weeks stating that they are now going to play with the big boys.

Reminder: Today is the non-tender deadline for all of MLB. The Braves still have 5 players eligible, those being;
Max Fried (Arb 2, estimated $12.2M)
AJ Minter (Arb 2, estimated $5M)
Mike Soroka (Arb 2, estimated $2.8M)
Tyler Matzek (Arb 2, estimated $1.8M)
Dennis Santana (Arb 1, estimated $1.1M)
I still think Matzek could be non-tendered. $1.8M doesn’t seem like much until you are close to the CBT. Then it looms much larger.
Today’s deadline to tender is not the day when they exchange dollar amounts. That comes on January 15. It’s simply a statement of intent that a contract will or will not be tendered. And it also does not preclude the team and player from negotiating a new contract. That can continue right up to the time of a hearing, although there are some teams, the Braves among them, that are considered “file and trial”. Once the figures are swapped, the team simply prefers to cease negotiations and go forward with the arb hearing. In years past, the Braves typically tried to come to agreements and avoid the arb process. But more recently they’ve found themselves more and more going to the panel. Nots sure if that trend is more indicative of a change in the team’s stance or the players’/agents’ stance, but I tend to lean more toward the players and agents… mainly because I blame the agents for everything. :-D.

Interesting perspective on Dansby Swanson.
Here are Dansby’s raw numbers in his 6 full seasons in Atlanta. Note that the “full” season in 2020 was just 60 games.
2017: .232/.312/.324, K% 21.8, BB% 10.7
2018: .238/.304/.395, K% 22.9, BB% 8.3
2019: .251/.325/.422, K% 22.8, BB% 9.4
2020: .274/.345/.464, K% 26.9, BB% 8.3
2021: .248/.311/.449, K% 25.6, BB% 8.0
2022: .277/.329/.447, K% 26.1, BB% 7.0
In other words, 2022 was truly a breakout year (in a contract year of course) and from a purely statistical standpoint, an outlier and not the norm. Plus, from a statistical standpoint, the trends show an increase in K rate and a decrease in BB rate. And while I personally do not live and die with raw numbers, the trends do not lie.
Defensively, Dansby also picked his walk year to earn his first Gold Glove. Truth is, some years he was barely average defensively, and some would argue below average. There are a boatload of defensive stat numbers we could cite here, but measuring defense is alot trickier than measuring offense. From an observational standpoint, I’d say Dansby does alot of things right such as being in the right place and having strong fundamentals. But he’s never been elite until 2022. Does that mean that he suddenly got alot better? I cannot say. But I do think it’s worth considering the whole back of the baseball card and not just a well-timed career year.
I guess what I say from this is that we might ought to look at the ol’ San Fran Giants and one Brandon Crawford. He had a career year in 2021, signed a big extension, and regressed horribly last season to the point that San Fran is one of the teams rumored to be interested in Dansby. Crawford and Dansby are strikingly similar.
Perhaps there is a reason Alex didn’t get an extension done with Dansby already.
Just sayin’. This ain’t exactly Freddie Freeman all over again. Those career trajectories are not parallel.

Yesterday I watched the World Cup Match between the USA and Wales. Please note I did it with the volume turn off. Anyway, I came to a few conclusions. First, these guys “flop” more than an NBA team, if anyone gets close to them they fall down and whine at the top of their lungs. Second, if American football players did that, 22 guys plus both coaching staffs would fall down and roll around on the ground for five minutes after every play. Third, like my son wants to say, it is tough to win against the other team when the “zebras” are on their side.
Lastly, snore….

Personally speaking, not for me. His drop off has been quite dramatic. He’s either hurt or his eyes have gone. I think Alex’s dollars are gonna have to be spent more efficiently, especially if a certain homegrown shortstop is in the plans.

Still nothing new on the Braves shortstop situation as yet. A lot of directions the team could go with it.
One thing for sure, with the new infield placement rule to be implemented next season, batting averages should improve for lefty hitters in particular.

But this year I’ll merely be a man evening consumer of the news. As this year’s version of baseball’s great yearly flea market opens today, I’m a little sad that I won’t be able to obsess over it the way I have for a long, long time.
Maybe that’s healthy. I don’t know. But I sure am gonna miss it.

Braves beat writer Justin Toscano noted earlier this evening that the Braves were actively looking into a Jacob deGrom signing. Obviously it didn’t happen, but isn’t it interesting that there was some actual 🔥 to that 💨? And are they still shopping that aisle?
It was also reported by Jon Morosi that the Braves had real interest in catcher Sean Murphy of the A’s. Latest reports say a deal for him is near, but the Braves aren’t the team. Who saw that interest coming? And what are the circumstances around that with Travis, Willie, and Manny all already under contract?
One thing I’ve learned over the last couple of years is that you can never guess what direction Alex Anthopoulos will turn. He is totally unpredictable… and in a good way.
Oh, Alex told the press earlier today he’s been talking to Dansby recently, for what that’s worth.

One has to wonder now that Judge has chosen the Bronx over the San brothers, Francisco and Diego, to whom will those teams now turn their attention (and considerable dollars)?
We know both have a lot of green to lay on the table because the reports are that Judge turned down more money to return to the Yanks. Couple that with the fact that the Pads had also made a huge offer to Trae Turner and you have to be at least a little bit worried that one of them is going to come sniffing around Dansby. After all, both are in the SS market, along with LAD. With 3 teams tossing out large offers and only 3 top tier SS left in the market, it’s cause for great concern.

I am increasingly of the opinion that the Braves may spend their $20M on a LF/DH type rather than Dansby. Not that they don’t still want Dansby back, but with Turner getting his big haul, the asking price for SS has not gone down. The reports say Dansby wants 6 years guaranteed, and the betting says he gets $25M/yr on average. I just don’t see AA shelling that amount out for Dansby, who has been very good in his career, but “great” only in his contract year. I believe that AA would prefer more certainty over that kind of layout, thus I am beginning to believe he’ll turn to the corner OF market, which has a greater selection more chance of offensive consistency.
That said, I don’t think he’ll hand the SS reins over to Grissom… yet. I see a stopgap kind of acquisition with Vaughn gaining more experience at AAA. And perhaps if the right trade is made (Ames Rosario?), they could be looking at another Dansby-esque walk decision next year.

The Dodgers say they aren’t looking at Correa. Are they gonna roll with Lux?
The odds are with Dansby getting his preferred 6 yrs/$150M. Maybe better. No one should be caught off guard this year if the team leader exits again.

MLBTR’s prediction for Dansby was 7 yrs/$153M. That doesn’t look nearly as bold today as it did a couple weeks ago. 7/154 breaks down to a $22M AAV, which fits in the Braves budget. Would AA give Dans 7 years? I think he could. I wonder what Dansby’s camp would say to that 7th year being an option year instead of a guarantee? That Bogaerts deal really skews the market, IMO.

I believe the Giants prefer Correa, but the Twins are trying to bring him back. The Sox were actively trying to bring Xander back, and I think they could pivot directly to Dansby. If the Cubs are serious, they probably are making their offer today. I believe that Dansby will give AA an opportunity to match whatever offer he considers. I’m a believer that this won’t drag out like Freddie did. This will move fast. Too many teams need a SS. Snoozers will become losers.

Now on the Dansby front, baseball is indeed a risky business. I kike Dansby but I don’t think he is all that, certainly not the player Freddy was. I think a lot of baseball GMs/owners are very short sighted. They are handing out contracts which will cripple their organizations in the future but evidently they don’t care.

I think we are all feeling like Dansby’s time may have ended here….I do think I have heard, both Gil and V diss Dansby, just a bit(I’m callin’ both of ya out 😆 )
Remember when he, not Ozzie was deemed the Ss of the future? I remember thinking, the black guy HAS to be the better SS 😉 and after a few games, you could see that he was clearly a SS and IMHO, he is an elite SS. I do not care what the defensive metrics say (Hey, after hearing Adam LaRoche, and esp. Texiera were ave to below ave 1st basemans, I knew they were jokes) Xander was considered a below ave SS that had no range. Saw last night on MLB tonight that he was basically playing too shallow, and merely moving back 10 feet or so, he was all of the sudden a very good SS. Odd….
I think since 2020 (looking at stats I rarely look at, OPS, slugging) Dansby has been one of the better offensive SS’s in baseball (records for a SS last year or 2 correct?) plus, A big moment guy, a solid team first guy….
I hear the most likely SS, next to Vaughn is Amed Rosario. But, if you look at this stats, a step back, basically Dansby, pre 2020.
https://www.mlb.com/player/amed-rosario-642708
Is he good? sure. Who knows, may be a better SS, for all I know. 18 steals like Dansby. But, less power, and some sucky OBP.
the thing is, the Phils, are they better than they were last year? For sure. Dodgers are really going to miss both Turners (if they don’t re-sign Justin) Phils are gonna be much more dangerous. Are the Mutts better? I don’t know. IF Verlander makes 25-30 starts and has a an ERA 1 run worse than last year, he’d still have a sub 3.00 ERA. They may still trade/sign more arms, outfielders.
Braves have lost a closer (I honestly don’t mind at all… I do genuinely fear for him in Boston, with a team that may be a last place team, the abuse will be brutal)
got an…ok guy…still stuck with 2 guys that, if not getting 10s of millions would be released. the only way the braves get rid of them is to play 90+ of their salaries, or taking on another guy no one wants. And, “we” may have to play them to get them worthwhile enough to trade, and at that point….might as well keep ’em, right?

The Mets will always Mets. It’s in their DNA. The Phil’s are better. But I agree with AA that you don’t base decisions on reaction to what other teams do. You simply conduct business the way you know how. Some do it well. I think AA is among those.
Now… on to the roster. If the Braves were to move in from Dansby and pivot toward acquiring a guy like Bryan Reynolds for LF instead (trade and extend), would y’all be OK with it? Because if I’m honest, I think the team is better plus Reynolds and minus Dansby. And that’s no disrespect to Dansby, but Reynolds is more impactful.
One can’t help but wonder if the teams trade if it’s only real OF prospect, and the guy some thought might compete for the LF spot in spring, is a signal toward a more permanent LF acquisition.
As always, I’m glad I’m not the guy that has to make those maneuvers.

I am currently watching MLB Hot Stove and I am struck by so many guys signing long term deals for big money who cannot possibly be reasonably expected to be able to produce at age 39,40,41 etc. They cannot all be expected to become DHs, especially because we know bat speed and eyes begin to fail around age 34… Just the facts. This is especially true since MLB cracked down on the fountain of youth in a vial has been banned.
I guess it really is all about “just win now” and let the new owners eat it….

One has to wonder how long Alec waits on Dansby to make up his mind before swinging to plan B for next season. Looking at who is available as free agents I would not be surprised to see the Braves bring back Duval on a short term (2 years) deal as a stop gap before looking for the next great shortstop.
I am reminded when Fucal jumped to the Dodgers and the same with Andrew Jones. Say what you will but the Braves have always been pretty spot on figuring a player’s true value and recognizing when they are done. Furcal was still a good shortstop when he left but Andrew really sucked in LA.
Okay, the missed it on Ozuna but did they really. I know most Atlanta fans are pretty tired of Marcel’s antics but he was showing signs of returning to his 2020 form towards the end of last season.

I believe we have to be careful about the rumors we hear about who is and not negotiating with the Braves front office. Rumor makes for good headlines, but we know for greater certainty the level of secrecy demanded by the Braves execs. We also know that when there is little real news to report, writers get creative to continue generating clicks… because after all, that’s what takes priority.
I am more pessimistic by the day on Dansby returning to the Braves, but it’s not because our Gm is cheap, but because other teams are being unrealistic. Just because the Phillies and Padres paid stupid money for Turner and Bogaerts, it doesn’t mean Alex has to be the same level of stupid. Alex has stated publicly that he wanted Dansby to find his market. Well, that’s what’s happening. If that market becomes inflated, I don’t expect our GM to fall into it. It would be irresponsible to the rest of the team.
For instance, I read this morning that the 11 year deals that those dudes got has not only increased the dollars Dans can expect, but the years as well. The new expectation has grown to 8 years and $200M. Is that the right amount for Dansby? If I’m honest, I believe it’s an overpay. I stated all along that I felt 6/$140M was about right, and I still do. Alex gets paid to make such evaluations. I trust him. I trust him to be responsible, not cheap. I’ll continue to trust the direction he chooses.

I really liked John Smoltz but were the Braves wrong to not offer him stupid money to stay? Bad decisions are made every day but some are longer termed than others. ie the monster trade for Mark Teixeira.

I get you V, I really do…and I like AA, esp. after I hear him, seems like a real guy, wants character players….
There’s just a feeling I get. I truly believe if the braves had made a run, but, but won the division or the W.C. that wouldn’t have bothered him too much. Get ’em next year, and all that…the long haul. again, I get it…budgets I get…but…a team can’t keep winning , losing their best players, their hometown guys….I think AA might pay Swanson 30 mil a year…for 2 years. He just doesn’t want long term deals that might hamstring the team (Have I ever said…I get that? 😉 )
But, just like the Red Sox screwed up by not re-doing Xander’s deal early last year (they are another team that lets their best get away., and it’s catching up with them)
Just like Olsen is not FF at the bat, or at 1st, whomever the braves get to play SS is not going to put up Dansby’s numbers, period. team keeps getting nicked every year….We know it takes a team, Acuna has basically meant very little offensively the last 2 seasons (ok, he was great before getting hurt in 2021, but the team didn’t go on a run til after he was hurt) and we still won. IF he returns to what he was, that will definitely help.
But, I too thought the braves really had very little to do to be just as good in 2023…but, I don’t think we all expected the Phils to get so much better…the Mutts may still be better, we shall see. Thank God the Marlins are cheap, with that rotation they could beat everyone if they had just an average offense…
getting off track a bit, but AA is not God, he makes mistakes….Cough, cough Ozuna (who I begged him to re-sign, man, of all times to listen to me AA 😛 )
and we now know, along with the players, no one is gonna retire a brave anymore….(Prove me wrong with Dansby please )
signing a 39 year old with a 4.34 ERA who never really looked right all season long, to another 20 mil deal, when you have 3 kids at least who could do close to that…not so sure about….and it put us right at the luxury tax thing…(just read we got moola back from the Tigers , along with that reliever, odd)
so in reality, AA may have had no plan at all to re-sign Dansby….we very well may see Ozuna back in left come 2023….wee

Official word from AA is that “there will be plenty of playing time to go around” for both Murphy and d’Arnaud. I haven’t established an opinion on the trade implications yet, but I do know that Murphy is one of the top young catchers in the game and getting better. With d’Arnaud under contract only through 2023, Murphy is the future of backstop here. As for Murphy specifically, only the vaunted Raalmuto throws out a higher percentage of attempted base stealers. It’s a great pickup… but the cost is very steep. Muller is a guy I have high expectations for. Salinas has great potential.

I can’t help but wonder if d’Arnaud is soon to be dealt too, unless he’s going to DH a lot. And that’s possible since WillieC got the lion’s share of those ABs late last season.

Just a passing thought, without the resources nearby to pull actual numbers. Given that today’s trade was a virtual wash in salary, could a future deal of Td’A help clear some $$ to use for SS or LF? After all, they could pickup a backup catcher for Murphy on the cheap.

Justin Toscano, ajc:
Since his first full season in the majors in 2020, Sean Murphy has compiled 10 Wins Above Replacement, according to FanGraphs, which ranks second among catchers behind the Phillies’ J.T Realmuto (12.6 WAR).
And explained further by AA:
“And you can sit there and say, ‘Well, we don’t have a need in ‘23 [at catcher], so let’s pass.’ But you may not have access to that player again. So ultimately, you know, this was the time to get him.”

So are the Braves better today than they were yesterday? Clearly they are. There are still needs, of course. But I think you are better at both C and DH. You might can live with what you get from LF if you can resign Dansby. Or conversely, you might can live with an average SS if you invest in LF. I prefer the former, but you can’t dismiss the latter.

Things are looking thin on the position player front however.

From what I am reading, Esteury Ruiz was the prize Oakland coveted. Proportied to be a centerfield prospect who can also hit. Maybe Pache was a bit too soon for them.
Anyway, listening to AA in an interview with Mad Dog on the MLB net I got the distinct impression from Alex he is accepting that Dansby is not coming back. Just more money than the Braves want to pay ie: they are not the Mets…
Well, it was fun while it lasted. We Braves fans went through the growing pains with Dansby so it is not like we haven’t seen it all before.

Correa to the Giants, 13 years / $350M. My head is spinning.
The Twins were pushing to re-sign him and are pivoting fully to Dansby. I’m betting Dans gets 7 years, maybe even 8 somewhere for around $25M AAV. It won’t be in Atlanta.

I hope Grissom is working his tail off in SS drills. My gut tells me he’s the guy. His bat will certainly play up. If he’s at least average in the dirt he’ll still be in the top half of the league.
Better sign a Conforto or Benintendi with that extra cash now. That’s a must.

Y’all know it’s funny how the Braves traded away possible the best shortstop they will ever have because they did not think he would hit enough for a lefty who never quite paned out.

Okay, that is that, the shock will be if Dansby stays, not if he leaves. Look for an eight to ten year deal now for the Braves erstwhile shortstop. Was nice knowing ya kid…
On the back side of any deal for any player who’s bat slows down as he ages, will be a lot of disgruntled fans tired of paying $100 a pop for seats and who will muse at how much of a bargain Marcel Ozuna was at $16 million a year.

I think 8yrs/$200M is now quite realistic for Dansby. I would have never dreamed it when the season ended. Amazing how a guy can get richer just by others making deals. I’d say it’s been a pretty great honeymoon for the kid, eh?

Yep, makes one wonder what Acuna’s contract is going to look like when he turns 28. Ozzie is going to demand a bit more money too.
I guess it is a sign of the times with stupid money being handed out like they are being run by FTX founder and CEO Sam Bankman-Fried. Well, it’s not my money so have at it but I don’t want to here any whining by either baseball owners or players concerning money. They have made their bed so lie in it.

Dispite al the crazy money being thrown at shortstops, I just cannot venture to value Dansby at more than about $22 million per year and that is high. What the kid needs to bare in mind is the cost of living in other states. Move to New York, the West Coast or DC you need and extra 3 to 5 mil a year just to even things out IMHO.

Gil, not arguing with you (wait, I am ! 😉 )
But, here’s Correas numbers….
291/.366/.467 with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs in 136 games. Only once has he played more than 150 games that is supposedly worth 28 mil a season….Correa is the MOST overrated player in baseball….he’s forever hurt, and that’s when he is young…
Dansby in 2022
25 HRs (32 doubles 96 RBI’s .277 .329 .447 (higher WAR than Carlos this year) only thing Correa has in his favor is more years of above ave play, but I will argue that since 2020 he’s been much better, and the best overall SS the braves have ever had.
AA screwed up, should have signed him to a long term contract (I Know, if Dansby was willing to) But, like y’all said, he’s gone….and I really like Grisson, I think he’ll be fine, but…he’s still only 21-22…and he’s not going to duplicate Dansby’s numbers at least for a few years….so, 1st base has less overall offense, and not SS will as well….and the catching/DH’ing duo is not going to be better than last year, at least offensively….so…

As for coulda, woulda, shoulda… It is in the past, learn from it and move on. Just realize the Braves are not a team which can afford many big mistakes. The Ozuna fiasco it a giant tell and enough to make any GM a bit gun shy.
So what is needed? A decent power bat in left? DuVall??? I don’t think we will really know before the end of May.

Don’t read too much into the “lack of communication” narrative being bandied about. While it is something to note, it’s not something that is concerning. Remember, Dans is represented by Excel Management, who famously (or infamously) repped Freddie last season. We saw their modus operandi play out right before us last year. They wait out the market, narrow the suitors, and field the best offers from the remaining teams. Then they present their own offer back to the Braves to see if Alex will bite. So I expect they are doing the same with Dansby. If and when he gets a solid offer from CHC or MIN, they’ll go back to ATL. Until then, there’s little reason for Alex to stay in continual contact with anyone.

Is Dansby a $25M/yr player? Maybe in the short term, but I don’t believe he is in the long term. Dansby is certainly among the best defensive SS in the game, but historically his bat is only about average. In 6 seasons he’s really only had 1 breakout year with the bat, that being his contract year. We’ve seen too many times a signing team get burned by 1 good year only to see their star player revert back to the back of the baseball card after signing. Brandon Crawford anyone?
I’ll be perfectly frank… I think Vaughn Grissom will have the better bat in the long term. Can he be at least average defensively? If so, then I believe you’re getting a pretty even replacement in the long term. Remember, Vaughn never really got the opportunity to respond to the league’s adjustment to him. Snit sat him instead in favor of the hot hand in the playoff push. Given time, he’ll adjust back and hit like we’ve come to expect. I don’t worry about his bat. Time will tell if his glove can stick.

Normally I would suggest a contract similar to what was paid to recently acquired Matt Olsen but the shortstop and the first base positions require different skill sets and a shortstop such as Dansby does not slot to be a DH in the same way a Matt Olsen would.
Vaughn Grissom on the other hand has not yet reached his man weight and to me will become more of a third baseman or outfielder when he finishes growing. I would think Vaughn will be a stop gap between Dansby and the next full time shortstop.
Either way, I don’t see Dansby as a 10 year 25 million a year ballplayer and I don’t think AA does either.

The team will miss Dansby but I got over players leaving when the Braves traded Evan Gattis. The Braves will still be strong up the middle with the return of Ozzie at 2nd, the addition of Murphy and the return of Money Mikey.

Early in 2022, the Braves offered a 6 yr / $100M extension. It’s my understanding that there was not another formal offer as Dansby (or his representation) preferred to go into FA. Once there, they never came back to Alex for discussion. Maybe you can say Alex never called them, but it’s really just semantics.
Chipper said that FA is not about the money, but it’s about playing where you want to play. I suppose for some guys, that’s where the most money is. For others it could be as simple as playing where your brand new bride plays her sport professionally. If I’m honest, olwhen I leaned that Mrs. Dansby’s pro team is in Chicago, I knew. It was really just a matter of when and how much.

That doesn’t mean we have to like it, it is just the way of the world. It is not as if we haven’t seen it all before. So move on, after all, the best shortstop in Braves history was dumped off for a retread and a prospect who never really panned out.
I expect Grissom will experience growing pains but all young players go thru it.

About soccer and the World Cup. Okay, I get it. Millions across the globe grow up playing the sport. It takes skill and stamina to play it well. That said, there is far too much “play acting” in the pro game. It is almost like watching TV wrestling. Hey, those roided up behemoths could kick my butt and I imagine some actually get hurt during a match but there is still a lot acting going on.
Still, it is not my sport of preference. Lots of running and little actual drama. Ice hockey is a lot more entertaining with many of the same rules. I never played hockey either but that is beside the point, very little acting is necessary when a player is checked into the boards are when hit by a puck in the five hole. But I digress, I will still prefer baseball as my game of choice. much more skill involved than given credit for.
I like Australian rules football even if I still don’t know the rules. American football… yep I understand that too. I am no longer a fan of the pro game but I love me some college ball. I’ll admit the SEC is the best semi-pro league in the world. Faster paced than the pro game with fewer beer commercial breaks. I watched a very entertaining game last night between SMU & BYU in the New Mexico Bowl.
So I’ll stick with baseball, and hopefully will be able to continue to root for the Braves but it is nice to see the Orioles return to some respectability… Just saying…

Perhaps he’d take a cheap flyer on Duval? Heck, Grossman seemed to have some big hits….I’d rather have him out there than Ozuna/Rosario….

Actually, I agree on Grossman, I thought he was pretty good last season. I guess the Braves (AA’s) only hope is that Ozuna shows up in shape and can give some semblance of why the Braves are paying him big money.

I have to disrespectfully disagree that AA will insist either Ozuna or Rosario “get plenty of ABs”. Unless one or both come to camp and look completely transformed, giving either plenty of ABs only guarantees plenty of outs. And that will only serve to shorter AA’s comfortable employment in Atlanta. While adding Murphy to the lineup replaces Dansby’s 2022 production in theory, there is still a gaping void in both LF and DH, SS notwithstanding. Can you DH d’Arnaud in games that Murphy catches (or vice versa)? Well, sure you can… but you also risk losing the DH position if one has to replace the other behind the plate for any reason. This of course could be negated by carrying a 3rd catcher (Chadwick Tromp?) on the bench. But that weakens an already short bench for a defense only replacement. So as good as it might sound to utilize the non-catching catcher at DH, I don’t see it as a regular practice. Maybe I’m wrong. But the overall point here is that with the aforementioned Ozuna and Rosario lurking in either LF or DH, there must be another addition to consistently replace the offensive production that came from the SS position. If the Braves go into 2023 with Rosario as the everyday LF, and Ozuna as the everyday DH… unless you can acquire a plus bat for SS, you’ve taken a step back for 2023, even with Murphy on board. And given the improvements made by other teams in the division, taking a step back is really taking a leap back.

this signing is a joke…all that’s going on is they don’t want to pay a luxury tax fine (V, or Gil, can you explain this to me? From MLBTR Though the salary is modest, it nudges the club closer to luxury tax territory. Roster Resource currently pegs the club’s payroll at $197MM with a competitive balance tax calculation just shy of $230MM. That leaves them just over $3MM away from the CBT threshold of $233MM.
so, don’t get the C.B.T.C. thing. If the payroll is 197, why is the CBTC 230M (or 230MM whatever that means)?
last year for Luplow, are you ready for this hot signing??? .176 in in 205 ABs Oh but wait, Berigan, didn’t you see that he has 31 HR’s in 430 AB’s against Lefties?
well, lets look at 2022. .181 against Righties, .171 against lefties….hmmm…but, to be fair, 8 of his 11 homers were against lefties! YAY!!!!
But seriously Berigan, even if it’s the most recent season, it’s an outlier no doubt! You are not the expert, they are! (Just like the Biden admin. is much smarter than you can ever dream of being!) vs Righties, .247 . Vs lefties. .167!!! Phils and Mutts are sweatin’ bullets right about now !!!!
I guess Duval and Grossman were in the 4 Million range, too rich for the braves right now…..
Hopefully I am WAY wrong and he’s the next sword guy in the dugout, only with a bit more power if we end up with Elvis, or Iglesias clogging up 9th in the order, he can come up and pinch hit, and offer a lot of power….

After hitting .320 in August, he only hit .176 in Sept….
I don’t think his numbers will be quite as good just because he will try too hard early on, and the Cubs don’t have the offense the braves do…we shall see…

I don’t hate the Luplow signing, as I do think he’s a very good platoon hitter. But it doesn’t excite me. I don’t know that the luxury tax is that big of a deterrent to Alex this year. As a first year “offender”, the first tier tax wouldn’t be any more than about $7M, or less than he paid Adam Duvall last year. So I don’t see it as a barrier.
If you ask me, he’s trying to position the team to offer an extension to Max Fried. And if that’s the final outcome, I’ll take the pitcher over any of the aforementioned names… including Dansby. Max wont come cheap. In fact, a reasonable offer will easily break all the salary records this team currently has. You’re probably talking 6 years minimum and $30M AAV minimum. Maxie is gonna get broke off by somebody , and I hope it’s us.

Take note of the name Jorge Mateo. He’s a SS on the Orioles, and they are reportedly listening to offers. He’s 28, a top 5 defender, and led the AL in stolen bases last year. The poop on him is that he was once a top prospect of the Yankees before going to the O’s. He’s very athletic and fast. He has good bat skills but is streaky and inconsistent. The skill set is there, but he’s never really harnessed it. That said, he must still get on base enough to lead the league in steals, so he can’t be that bad. Maybe working with a coach like Seitser could “unlock” him. Who knows? He has 3 years of arb control remaining, which makes him very attractive. A fast athletic base stealer would be ok in the 9 hole, wouldn’t he?

V, I really do love your enthusiasm, perhaps it’s the time of year (or the record cold headed our way) but I can’t get excited about a guy fighting it out with Rosario to be the main left fielder…Rosario is a career .270 hitter (With no OBP skills) Luplow is a career .213 hitter. who hit…176 last year in a hitters park. And hit…202 in 2021. That is not competitive. Rosario hit .212 last year, and was after hitting like .050 (ok, .068) early on because of the eye issue…. He’s not a real candidate to be our main left fielder. He’s a 5th outfielder…a sword swinger at best…
and Jorge Mateo…ok, .221/.267 slash line…yikes….I think Grissom can do that, don’t you? Unless Grissom just goes to AAA to learn LF, I think it’s a real step backwards (remember how good everyone was batting 9th this year?) plus, who will be their SS? Grissom? Why trade more prospects from a thin pool to get a lousy hitter?
Just all kinds of confused right now….but, AA has pulled rabbits out of his hat before, perhaps one of the many ….real outfielders in AZ will get traded our way?

Here are some things to consider:
As far as money goes, the Braves were prepared to spend around $20 MM a year for Dansby so that amount of money appears to be on the table for another player(s) at least.
The tax does not appear to be a major issue with the Braves, that said, they are loath to over pay. There is still a lot of pre season left so I am not overly worried at this point.
I don’t expect anything of significance to occur until after the New Year. This is a very slow time for business to get done.

If I had to take a stretch guess today, I’d say that Alex is looking at Grissom as the long term answer at SS, but not to start the season. My gut tells me that the Braves will simply sign Andrus or Iglesias for their gloves for the 2023 season, or until the organization believes Grissom, who will start the year playing SS every day at AAA, is ready to take over.
That’s my gut feeling.
Also a gut feeling is that Luplow may be here to take Ozuna’s place on the bench as a RH bat that can actually go out and play in the field… in any of the 3 spots. I think this could be the season that Alex eats the remainder of Ozuna’s deal. No specific clues to it, just a gut feeling.
I do think there’s another OF move to be made, but probably nothing earth shattering. But I think LF is ping to be a revolving door where the hot hand plays until he cools. Just a gut feeling.
I probably shouldn’t do gut feelings right after eating lunch.

Another thing to consider…
Alex loves to hold some back for mid-season. Don’t be surprised if we start the season as I mentioned above, giving some guys a chance to bounce back, and then adjust as necessary in June or July. That’s the timetable I’d give in Grissom, too. He would essentially be a mid-season pickup, just from within.

The overall numbers of the Mets’ spending spree continue to stagger. Assuming Correa’s contract pays him $26.25MM in each year of the deal, the Amazins’ payroll will now soar past the $377MM mark for 2023. Having already far surpassed the fourth and highest tier ($293MM) of Competitive Balance Tax penalties, New York is paying a 90% tax on every dollar spent beyond the $293MM threshold. That works out to roughly $23.62MM added to the Mets’ tax bill, thus putting their luxury tax number over $386MM.

Without Dansby, (Or FF) the braves do not with the 2021 W.S. (of course they are 2 guys AA had nothing to do with signing/bringing to the braves,so….)
I like them as humans as well as ballplayers and wish the GM would have let them be braves for life…no brave will begin and end his career here while he’s in charge.
…and I think 2022 Homeboy upstairs, is sadly going to learn the lessons of the previous “walks on water” GM, that you can’t just throw anyone out there, and win,(remember how J.S. would think any old reject could and would work in the bullpen?) esp. if the other teams in the division are hungrier/angrier/more willing to spend than you are, and improved during the offseason, while the braves became a weaker team (I know, you guys believe it’s early, and there isn’t cap on spending 😉 ) ) we shall see, won’t we?
I guess the thought process is that once again, the Mutts and Phils will only be 5-10 games ahead of the braves, and then the braves can trade for a LF’er/SS/DH type, and a bullpen arm or 2. Of course, what has worked in the past, always works in the future.

and before anyone says it, yeah, both of them could have taken hometown discounts, but…all the younger players have done that, and this was their one time to hit on a big contract ….I imagine both will be playing long after Ozuna has retired, and back in constant trouble at home…they are actually dedicated to being the best they can be

IMO:
Yes, Dansby’s defense is among the best. No question. But his defense is the skill that will diminish with age. And it’s certainly not worth $27M/yr. As for his offense, everyone talks about his breakout season in 2023. By if you look at his season splits, he really had a monster 1st half and regresses closer to his career norm in the second half. So the constant comparisons to Freddie Freeman are really unfounded. The better comparison might be Jason Hayward. Who ironically signed with the Cubs. We all know that didn’t end well. And maybe the best comparison is Jeff Blauser who also had a career year in his FA walk year. Oh… and he signed with the Cubs. And that also didn’t end well.

Conforto to the jilted Giants. But I’m resigned to the fact that any further tweaking of this team will come via trade. I like the team as it sits right now. I’ll be patient and see what a platoon of Luplow and Rosario looks like in LF. And I’m cautiously optimistic about Grissom at SS. You can hold my feet to the fire for this comment, but I believe he’ll be a better and more consistent bat in the lineup than the guy who used to play there. I still have high hopes for them even if Steve Cohen signs every dang player on the planet.
I can’t wait until spring. How many days until P&CR?

I was kind of wishing Alex would put in a bid for Comforto and having said that , perhaps he did but oh well. Time to move on, all that money spent may well bring a championship to the Mets but to be honest doubling the payroll of all other teams somehow diminishes the accomplishment I think. If they do win it will be, well, what did you expect. If they don’t win, Cohen will look for some wounded to shoot…

Before we all get involved with family events the next couple and days and/or deal with weather woes, I simply want to wish each one of you – V, Ber, Gil – the most blessed and Merry Christmas ever. I sincerely pray that the coming New Year will find each one of us in a much better situation than some of us have been. I do love you guys very much. You’re like brothers. I already have 2 brothers but now I’m blessed with you, too!
Today is my baby girl’s birthday. sigh Born 12/23/1976 and every day has been Mother’s Day since. having met her, Gil and Jo can tell you how beautiful and special she is. What an incredible blessing! Happy Birthday, sweetheart!

Thank you CL, I feel blessed to know you both. The wind has split one of our cedar trees in front of the house. I would venture the tree is about 100 years old or better. Cedars grow at such a slow rate. I am hoping we can save what is left.
Give Kelly a big hug for us and wish her a happy and blessed birthday from us both.

You’re special people, my friend!
Wow, I’m sorry about the cedar. They’re pretty tough trees, too. I forgot to take our flag in yesterday. This afternoon we finally found it in the back yard, hung up in the lattice above the back deck. Kelly had a heck of a time getting it loose and down. Glad it didn’t hang up somewhere on the roof!
I’ll relay your message and hugs to Kelly. She’ll be really tickled!

Wow CL, how can you have a daughter who was born in the 70s? were you a child bride? or is she really your younger sister? 🙂
Shame I haven’t met any of you all! Ironic, that since my late mother worked for Delta, I used to…used to travel quite a bit. but my Dads health and my finances of late make it all but impossible.
CL wish Kelly a happy birthday! Hope it’s been a good one.

Child bride? Ummm, not quite. lol Let’s just say I think it’s safe to say I’m the “senior-most” member of our little tribe! By a pretty good bit! 😀
I’ll relay your wishes to Kelly. Her eyes will sparkle!

Well now, isn’t this interesting? More and more interesting by the day. I’m gonna guess that it’s an old injury that is now showing signs of arthritis. That happens ya know. Trust me… I can attest.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Excerpt from Rosenthal’s piece in The Athletic describing the injury at issue:
Correa, 28, required arthroscopic surgery to repair a fractured right fibula and minor ligament damage after he hit an RBI triple and his spike got stuck on the bag in June 2014, when he was 19 and still in the minor leagues with the Astros. Astros GM Jeff Luhnow said at the time Correa’s fracture was nearer to the ankle than his knee.
In eight major-league seasons, Correa has never gone on the injured list with a right-leg problem. He made reference to the hardware in his leg after a game on Sept. 20 in which he appeared to be injured following a hard slide, but missed no time afterward.
“He just hit my plate,” Correa told reporters. “I had surgery and he hit it. Just kind of felt numb. Vibrating. So I was just waiting for it to calm down. It was a little scary, but when I moved I knew it was good.”

So it seems the Mets and Correa’s reps are “working through” some things. In other words, they are reworking the agreement. Offering 12 years guaranteed to a guy who had literally just failed a physical for another team is so irresponsible I can’t even describe it properly. But it is truly a Mets thing to do.

Pretty much a “Damn the torpedoes” kind of thing. As in, I am going to buy at least one championship because I can and too bad for the next owners in a couple of years…

And I think the Giants have to feel a bit of validation after being publicly flogged for letting their deal fall apart. Good for them. They’re a good and trustworthy organization… unlike a certain group up in Flushing.

Murph V2 has been extended. Saw this coming. You don’t give up as much as we did, including your only near catching prospect, without nailing the replacement down.

FWIW, I like it. He’s better and younger that Travis. Of course I love Travis, but there’s no denying this is a good baseball move. I know the official line is that the two catchers will split time, but teams generally do not invest $88M in a part timer.
Look for Travis to be traded for a LF/DH type. It’s coming.

I would not be too quick to see the Braves trade Travis, his bat plays above average and he has leadership skills.

we also don’t have a real backup catcher if we trade Travis…
I just find it…interesting that a guy that hit .216 in 2021 and .250 last year….is considered by many a sure fire long term catcher….
if AA would just admit that Ozuna was a mistake, and drop him …oh, right about Now, funk soul brother(reference only I get, no doubt 😉 ) then you free up DH for Travis, Rosario, and the regulars and then get a real left fielder from…somewheres..

Well, first of all, he hit in a cavernous stadium with crap hitters around him in the lineup, so there’s that about his bat.
But as to his defense, only JT Realmuto ranks better, and not by much. Murphy does all the things that AA and the organization values. According to his 2022 defensive metrics, he rates as the 3rd best pitch framer in MLB and the 2nd best in “pop time”, or the time from when the ball “pops” in his mitt to when his throw reaches 2nd base. And if you value such metrics as WAR, his from 2022 was 5.1, which is pretty dang good.
I heard a talking head today note that Murphy’s career stats are almost identical to those of JTR at the same stage in his career.
So that’s why.

MLBTR: Luetge, 35, pitched two seasons in the Bronx after signing a minor league deal during the 2020-21 offseason. Over his time in pinstripes, he put together a 2.71 ERA through 129 2/3 frames. That included a sub-3.00 mark in both years, with Luetge topping 55 innings in each season. His 2022 campaign saw him put together a 2.67 mark across 57 1/3 frames, striking out a solid 23.9% of opponents against a better than average 6.8% walk rate.
This is the Tyler Matzek replacement.

His numbers… well, they’re pretty ugly. All glove, no bat. No clue what this is for except you have to have someone to play in AAA.
This is the Ryan Langerhans replacement. 😉

If the are going to give a second look at Kolby Allard, they should give a second look at Bryse Wilson. I don’t think bringing him back for depth would block anyone at AAA. I need to look at that.
Speaking of looking at the whole roster, and I mean the WHOLE roster, I’m beginning to understand the Eli White acquisition now. He didn’t cost anything and has 2 minor league options remaining. And the team actually needs OF at AAA.
As for Lucas Leubke, he is almost a perfect plug-and-play replacement for Tyler Matzek. I hated giving up Indigo Diaz for him, but you have to give quality to get quality. He makes a strong bullpen stronger, and creates bullpen depth at AAA, no matter who wins the last couple of spots. And having pitching depth is very important. Which brings us back full circle to Wilson. Why not?

All that said, it has to be a tough time of year to find your team is dropping you… Merry Christmas dude, here is a lump of coal for you…

As things currently stand, there is actually pretty strong starting pitching depth at AAA. Assuming Mike Soroka wins that 5th spot (and I think he will), the Stripers rotation will be stout with Ian Anderson, Bryce Elder, Kolby Allard, Darius Vines, and Jared Shuster. And Shuster is probably the best of that bunch. There’s also Alan Rangel, who has an invite to spring training. That’s a pretty good bunch already. But I think you could still shoehorn Bryse Wilson in somewhere.
I’m curious about Elder. He seems the second best candidate to win the 5th starter spot to me. I know there was rumbling about a 6 man rotation late last season… would a team be bold enough to break the mold and actually do it? In this era of protecting arms and pitch limits, you’d think it would have to at least be a consideration. You can keep your ace (or aces) on 5 day schedules but insert the 6th guy in accordingly. Might save some wear in the pen too if pitchers were able to go longer with an extra day’s rest.
Just a thought.

You never have too much pitching, that said, Bryse will catch on somewhere. He is young and has promise. I just think he needs the right team behind him. I watched several of the games he pitched last season and his last start was his best by far. Of course the Bucs’ “closer” gave up the lead in the ninth… T’ws sad for Bryse. Typical for the Pirates.
And what of Hoy? Kid, we hardly knew ya. Will likely be offered a minor league deal.
Question: Are the same time parameters in effect during the off season?

So fun fact about Bryse Wilson. He has no minor league options. That’ll limit his market tremendously. Likely eliminate the Braves for sure.

not if signed to a minor league deal.

Of course that is what the Pirates hope he will do to stay with them.

Because he was DFA’d, he’ll either have to be traded (to a major league roster) or pass through waivers. If that happens then the Pirates can simply assign him to their minor league affiliate as he doesn’t have enough service time to be a FA.
LikeLiked by 1 person
And if someone makes a waiver claim, they’ll still have to work out a deal and keep him on their ML roster. Some pitching starved team may do that. But he won’t be stashed away for depth on any teams roster except possibly back in PIT.

First the Sun Bowl with Pitt vs UCLA, then the TCU upset of Michigan and finally Georgia’s historic comeback against Ohio State. Wow, just wow… The college game is so much more entertain than the pros, it just is… And my alma matta doesn’t even have a football team…
