Journalist Jimmy and Chop Seal that was a great blog you are the man…oh, and, uh, seal.
From last blog, the denizen now MIB (man in blue) JJS asked a serious question about the difference between mosquito bites and trout bites and little lambs eat ivy…uh, and waders in deer stands. First, waders are fine. All the best restaurants have’em. Tip them well. But don’t take one to a deer stand if you want to remain quiet. But then, wildlife is relative I suppose. Anyhoo…
Next, when skeeters bite, take flight. They just want blood. When trout bite, it’s out of revenge. Understandable revenge. Mosquitos attack without provocation. Trout are just hooked on revenge. Who could blame’em?
Thing is, when trout bite, you must bite back. Before biting trout add a little flour, salt, pepper and a little lemon juice. Saute in a pan with garlic and capers. Serve with whipped potatoes and vegetable of choice. Asparagus. White wine or iced tea will finish.
Caution: If you bite trout back immediately after they bite you, your slimy mouth will be full of scales. Dummy sushi.
Catch, bite and release method: Trout bites fisherman, fisherman screams, then gently positions trout in the “training position”. Turn trout upside down, rub their belly for a minute, give trout a little nibble on the neck to let them know who’s boss, then whisper in their ear. Yes, that’s the trick.
What to whisper? Try this: Ok trout, you are too small. Go back to school, eat lot’s of shrimp and next year when you see this boat, tell all of your schoolmates to jump into the boat. Do this and you’ll live to swim another day.
They usually agree and trout always keep their word. Unless named Kilgore.

it is well past time that bobby cox stop picking bobby cox’s nose in the dugout and on television! well past time. imagine enjoying a nice piece of ice box pie and watching the game on tv when suddenly the camera is on bobby cox and bobby cox has bobby cox’s fingers well into bobby cox’s nose. the camera lingers. what will come out? and how will it be disposed of? fingers to the railing? or, worse. . . fingers to the mouth. and what if chino cadahia is close by? fingers to the back of the pants (no feeeling there journalist suspects). and then, chino sits on the bench close to say, uh, chipper (on the dl with hammocks). chipper gets up for some seeds. chino gets up and walks away. chipper returns to the bench and sits where chino was sitting (follow closely now). suddenly, chipper slides from the bench to the ground! additional injury. longer on the dl. season is lost. see, nose picking must stop.
and now, to answer baby seal: yes. and peter moylan is a most fearsome bloke. journalist jimmy smith fears no man but fears peter moylan just a little bit. reminds this journalist of idi amin. would not wish to be around peter moylan at dinner time.
and now, baseball . . . should we call chipper “hoss” on this blog? jimmy smith thinks not. but this topic is open for discussion.

Little birds flying to and fro and visiting Chop chicks. Little Chickadee comes to mind. So does WC Fields. Snake in one pocket, liquor in the other in case of, you know…trout bite. Maybe the bird was a carrier pigeon? Lead ankle bracelet.
Birds are interesting. They all flock together it seems. They move right and left and all around at the same time. Some are independent birds. They don’t seem to like the same big blue worms as the flocks.
Good ideas found there on Chickadee blog by reporters it seems. Funny thing about ideas. Some credit others and some just stake a claim. In my business we call that, “if it wasn’t invented by me it wasn’t invented”. Apple seeds eaten by birds travel furthest. Apples are good wherever they grow.
There must be an apple pie recipe somewhere…

and, bloggers will want to know . . . the cupcakes carolina lady sent today were most excellent! all bloggers here should expect cupcakes. pass it on.
and blue worms . . . jimmy smith tried to avoid this subject. yes, caught up in the moment of the hunt (and suffering from trout bites) jimmy smith autographed the worm hides and sent them to carolina lady. upon reflection, one blue worm may have been only slightly wounded – and all know of the blue worm’s hearty constitution and capacity for quick recovery (can grow a new head on either end much like, well, you know). if the worm(s) becomes troublsome, carolina lady, a hartebeest will be dispatched before Christmas.
and will this blog have Christmas stockings? and how many per blogger? and how many per hoss? and if chop chick has gone south for the winter does that mean chop chick is an old bird? perhaps a.c.c.? fits, right? stand by your man. but don’t wear heels. oh, the humanity!

baby seal has calculated the height of the old journalist. interpolating from there, baby seal should be able to deduce the height of a person standing close by the old journalist. say someone about 5’4″ tall is standing by the old journalist and the old journalist pats the lad on the head and says, “great blog, chop chick.” and someone says, “that’s not chop chick – she’s on the other blog”. so the old journalist (not knowing the name of the dimunitive blogger) just walks away. at that very moment, using complicated triangulation and hokus, baby seal will be able to quickly gauge exact height of the lad. this information will be posted for all to see – not in the way of embarrassment – only to confirm or deny claims of increased stature. much will be revealed. funny shoes, perhaps?

This story happened a while ago in Dublin, and even though it sounds
like an Alfred Hitchcock tale, its true.
John Bradford, a Dublin University student, was on the side of the
road hitchhiking on a very dark night and in the midst of a storm.
The night was rolling on and no car went by. The storm was so strong
he could hardly see a few feet ahead of him. Suddenly, he saw a car
slowly coming towards him and stopped. John, desperate for shelter and
without thinking about it, got into the car and closed the door.. only to
realize there was nobody behind the wheel and the engine wasn’t on!!
The car started moving slowly. John looked at the road ahead and saw a
curve approaching. Scared, he started to pray, begging for his life. Then, just before the car hit the curve, a hand appeared through the
window and turned the wheel. John, paralyzed with terror, watched as the
hand repeatedly came through the window, but never touched or harmed him.
Shortly thereafter John saw the lights of a pub appear down the road,
so, gathering strength, he jumped out of the car and ran to it. Wet and out of breath, he rushed inside and started telling everybody about the horrible experience he had just had.
A silence enveloped the pub when everybody realized he was crying
and…. wasn’t drunk.
Suddenly, the door opened, and two other people walked in from the
stormy night. They, like John, were also soaked and out of breath.
Looking around, and seeing John Bradford sobbing at the bar, one said
to the other… ‘Look Paddy….. there’s that bloody idiot that got in
the car while we were pushing it!!!!’

Top of the morning, denizens. Thought I would jump in here and say hello and see how the esteemed members of the blog are doing.
Didn’t think I’d see a reference to me in the comments, not the way it was posted.
Whoever the little birdie is above who said somebody “practically preached a sermon to ssiscribe” is about 500 miles off base. Somebody had asked why the Chop Chick blog was shut down when all of you guys were writing on it, giving that dormant blog its first activity in months.
I wondered the same thing. And I know a few folks here and there.
I asked around and have been told the blogs shut down to commenting two weeks after they are created. There was a post on the new Chop Chick blog commenting that the AJC shut down the blog because they didn’t want you guys posting.
Not true, from what I’ve been able to find out. Anyway, posted what I found as a courtesy on there, and ended up with a sarcastic response from somebody over there. Whatever.
That blog, by the way, is going silent until spring, so I’m glad you guys created this one.
I’ll be checking in from time to time to see how you guys are doing. My purpose in coming here this morning was to say hello and wish you well. I didn’t think I’d need to come in here and clear up any misconceptions about being preached to … sigh. Again, whatever.

hey, scribe, good to see the post (but sadly, no transition). scribe must not be upset with the comments from the now-defunct chop chick blog. jimmy smith thinks no ill will was intended by the poster. that blog went away at a time there were a number of people posting with good frequency. as scribe notes, a very nice new blog is now underway with chop lady and chop seal. please do frequent the neighborhood.

Scribe > seems there are too many little birdies around these days. Gets unnecessarily cryptic and gossipy after a while. Just went over to the Chop Chickadee blog to see what the fuss and sermonizing was about that you mentioned. After reading comments from “Defector” and yourself I’m still not sure what the fuss was about.
Perhaps a testy defector and you happened to be in the same place at the same time. Perhaps it was your view of why the Chick shut down that aggravated the masked one. Subtract a few unfortunate words that made it personally directed and you guys were probably in violent agreement on the basics. Who knows? Only you and the shadow birdie defector I suppose.
You also posted the same multi-denizen contributor idea that I had posted on the previous Chick blog (Chop House concept) about rotating “guest” denizen columnists. Check it out. I think we’re thinking the same way about a structure for a blog. My post didn’t get much if any feedback, but it seems Chick came up with (lifted?) an “original” idea of having denizens contribute ideas and such on her new blog. How gracious of AJC.
Had she read the previous blog? Was she (he or it) simply engaged in blatant and lazy patronization? Like, “here’s a little AJC bone, chew on that for 9 weeks, talk amongst yourselves and I’ll check back in”. They don’t have Internet where she’s going? Did AJC (after they shut down) reconsider and see a potential no-brainer, no-effort, no-investment revenue stream that was self-functioning? If so, they miscalculated, mismanaged and neglected the “customer base”. Who really cares now? The flock has flown.
We may have varying degrees of curiosity to the reasons Chick shut down but it’s really a moot issue now. The water has since passed under the bowl of spilt milk and saturated the cat that’s now out of the bag and living under the bridge. All in all, it’s just as silly as that discombobulated metaphor.
The sky, contrary to the opinions of a few, is not falling after all. AJC will continue. The bloggers will blog when and where they see fit. Life goes on…life is good and the sun rose again today.
Whatever the interpretation of reasons for discourse or events, it’s good to see you on this blog. Got an article for us? Perhaps after Jimmy finishes with seals, pies, toes, worms, bait and boogers? Baseball maybe? It’s all good.

I’d like to share a little story from one of my past experiences. It may or may not be true…I’ll let you decide for yourself:
Hillbilly was walking down the road in the Ouachita River Bottoms of south Arkansas carrying a turkey under his arm and a game warden drove up on him.
Game Warden stopped and asked Hillbilly, “Where did you get that turkey?”
Hillbilly replied, “What turkey?”
The game warden said, “That turkey you’re carrying under your arm.”
Hillbilly looked down and said, “Well, lookee there, a turkey done roosted under my arm!”
The game warden said, “Now look, you know turkey season is closed, so whatever you do to that turkey, I’m going to do to you. If you break his leg, I’m gonna break your leg. If you break his wing, I’ll break your arm. Whatever you do to him, I’ll do to you. So, what are you gonna do with him?”
Hillbilly said, “I guess I’ll kiss his ### and let him go.”

oh, the humanity! hillbilly, that was a good one. reminds this journalist of how we all left the other blog. kiss and release. and whither baseball today? here comes some baseball . . . Fukudome tells Chunichi Dragons he’s heading to majors. journalist has no idea what that means but it appears to be the big story today. that, and the elusive mitchell report. and what will that report say? shame, that’s what. shame. shame, shame, shame. and last night the falcons players paid tribute to michael vick with paint-your-face numbers and tee shirts and lethargic play. shame, shame, shame. and that is one good thing about the braves – very few convicted felons still on the roster. and whatever happened to rob deer? autographed by now? double dimed?

Hey Savannah, good to hear from ya.
Yeah, some of this stuff is absolute nonsense. But I remember once upon a time being told by somebody in the know (not DOB, by the way) that the comments cease to accept any more after two weeks. I was very, very puzzled as to why the CC blog had shut down, but then I remembered that little factoid and circled back to see if that still was the case.
It is, from what I’ve learned.
Still, though, I thought it looked pretty poor for the AJC not to at least make mention of it (DOB did make a passing comment about that on his blog). It smacked of the door being slammed in the face of a group who did a heck of a lot for the Braves/MIB blog and the AJC online community in general.
So, when I made the comment about the blog sitting there empty, and the birdie/defector (or whatever we’ll call him/her/it) challenged me on that statement, I merely posted what I did as a courtesy. Then, I got a real sarcastic response, and sometimes when I should just let it pass under the bridge, I don’t. Perhaps I should’ve.
Whatever will be, will be, and more than a decade of writing for newspapers should’ve taught me you can’t reason with some people. I guess I have such a healthy amount of respect for all of you, your talents and your contributions to the online community of the AJC, that I just wanted to publicly post the fact that — as far as I can tell — that one blog in question wasn’t shut down to run you folks away. The result: I got “preached a sermon to.” Whatever.
I do like the idea of rotating postings, though, come 2008. I think it’s gotta be done from the fans’ perspective, either after the game or first thing the following morning. I’m game to take part if they want me to. If not, I’ve got plenty of other places to visit, including this fine site.
Anyway, it’s good to be here. I’ve been busy at work and been out of town, so I’m trying to catch up. It’s good to see the talk on here, definitely. It’s been a great offseason for the Braves: Wren got all his shopping done before Christmas. I think he’s finished now, but maybe there is a veteran one-season stop-gap center fielder out there. For my money, I say let the kids have at it and allow Anderson or Schafer or Blanco or Lillibridge man the position come March 31 against the Pirates at Turner Field.
I love the makeup of the bullpen to this point. You deal Ascanio and fill two needs. The Braves have a ton of hard-throwers down there, and you needed a vet lefty and a utility guy who can play short (which Prado and Aybar cannot do, but Infante can). So, good for Wren to get Ohman and Infante. Still leaves the pen with Acosta, Boyer, Devine, Resop, Stockman and Yates behind Soriano, Moylan and the two lefties, Ohman and Ring. Also, there could be Bennett or Morton into the mix, and Gonzalez will be back sometime this summer. That’s a good, deep pen, indeed, and maybe they won’t be torched because the rotation with Glavine at No. 3 can eat up innings as they should.
Finally, the –30– question: Old-school journalists used to type that at the end of their stories, to signal the conclusion of their stories for the folks on the copy desk. Guess I do it as a tribute to those who came before me, and maybe as a gesture so that the ones who follow don’t forget the fine folks who banged out copy on old Royal typewriters and who filed not from laptops, but from Western Union stations.

Scribe > in high school I took a summer job at a local engravers/silk screen printer. They also did typesetting (typography is all but a lost art). The Hot Type crew was the busiest in the place. My career also started in the communications dark ages with typewriters, linotype, etc. We shipped marked-up hard copy via Greyhound to typographers such as Swift Tom his Electric Type Shop for typography…before even fax machines were around. Oh, the good old bad old days. Now, here we are blogging. Who’da thunkit?
On baseball: yours was a good post as usual and I like a lot the moves the Braves have made but I’m probably more concerned with stop-gap thinking than many or most seem to be. Since I’m not nearly as savvy on all of the moves, I’ll be a good optimist fan and hope for the best.
I’m mixed on CF vet versus some of the kids. Without another ace to go along with our good but aging/injury recovering or very young starters, we don’t seem to be looking at a dominant pitching staff, therefore I think a proven bat in CF would be a move I’d like to see.

Savannah: Yeah, anytime you can add a veteran bat, it’s a good move (no real cutting-hitting journalism there, for sure!). However, I like the way the team is comprised at the moment. We all know there is no replacement for AJ’s defense in center, but he has slowed a step and I think he will slope off quicker than some realize. Dude plays hard and plays hurt and plays every day — well, not the last three games in Houston; guess Boras didn’t want him hurting him value more than the .222 average already did. I think all that is going to start catching up to him.
I am among those who feel Schafer is the real deal, and the Hernandez kid behind him (part of the Renteria deal) could turn out to be even better. But Anderson intrigues me. His numbers all the way up through the minors are good, he played well in 21 games with the Astros in September, hits leadoff, has good speed, plays good defense. I think him and Blanco can man the position this year, at least, until Schafer is ready.
If Schafer hits well at Mississippi, he’l be here by July, if not sooner. Nothing more than my feeling and opinion, but I think he’s going to be one heck of a player at the big-league level, and Hernandez, too, could be a star. An outfield of Hernandez in left, Schafer in center and Frenchy in right in 2010 would indeed be a great outfield.
Back to 2008 (noted transition, just for you, Esteemed Ugandan Journalist Jimmy Smith): You carry 13 position players (12 pitchers; five starters and seven relievers). Of those 13, six are infielders (Tex, KJ, Yunel and Chipper are the starters; Infante and either Prado or Aybar as backups). You carry two catchers (McCann the starter, either Pena, Sammons or a free-agent signee as the backup). You carry five outfielders, and that’s where the big battle will be, position-wise, for roster spots.
Frenchy is starting in right. I think Diaz should be the starter in left. The dude has earned it with his play the past two seasons. You have Anderson and Blanco in center, and Brandon Jones as the backup/platoon guy in left.
Just off the top of my head, I don’t know if I’m forgetting anybody off hand. There is Thorman, who did play some in left a couple of years ago. Perhaps he makes the team and Brandon Jones goes down to play every day at Richmond, perhaps? I don’t know. One figures Harris and Orr gets invites to camp, but both need lights-out springs and injuries above them to make the team.
Lineup wise, here’s one for the blog: My projected Braves batting lineup in 2008:
1. Anderson (assuming he’s the starter in center)
2. Escobar
3. Chipper
4. Tex
5. McCann
6. Frenchy
7. Johnson
8. Diaz
9. Pitcher du jour
If it’s Blanco or Schafer in center, then I put Kelly or Escobar first and second, move Diaz up to seventh and put Blanco/Schafer eighth. Just a stab at the batting order for opening day, as I sit here on Dec. 11 and enjoy another 78-degree day in the Atlanta suburbs.
Feels like I should be going to a game at Turner Field tonight, not wrapping Christmas presents!

Yes, Hernandez definitely is not worth forgetting about. I don’t think he’s tabbed to be ready until 2010 (or maybe sometime in 2009, if he burns it up in the minors this year). Dude, from everything I’ve read and seen on him, is one heck of a prospect who has the always dangerous “can’t miss” label on him.

Scribe, I think the bench may end up as tangled up as the bullpen has become, as far as filling the roster goes. Options will play a significant role I’m sure.
Don’t forget these three scenarios:
1) Infante could be a 5th outfielder as well as utility infielder
2) Pena could catch and play outfield, AND is it 1st or 3rd base or both? (he could, but then you get into having your both catchers on the field and no emergency catcher except Diaz and blah, blah, blah…..)
3) Lillibridge could be a backup infielder AND outfielder (though I personally don’t think he needs to be sitting on the bench 5 days a week.)
It could go many different way depending on whether The Braves want to choose versatility over strength or vice versa.

I don’t see a need for both Prado AND Infante on the roster. Infante is basically Prado plus two or three more positions, so what good would Prado really be? And who knows what we’ll get out of Aybar. He’s the best bat out of the three, but you’d still have to have Infante to back up Escobar. Or you could always send Thorman packing and use Diaz as your emergency back-up 1B (not going to see much time there with Tex in place anyway.) I feel like the room is spinning around me just thinking about how this might play out.

gorkys has been referred to by frank as “one of the fastest players in baseball”. of course, speed on the braves will be wasted. 3-run homers. alas, gorkys is still a baby and it will take some time to get gorkys ready for centerfield (best position). outfield talent is deep. last year, infield talent was deep and look what happened . . . oh, the humanity!
and to make everyone feel better remember that woodward. wilson, and orr are gone. and is anyone working with thorman to fix that hard, hard, cut-down-a-tree swing? still hitting with pete orr? might try hitting with uh, chipper instead.
and will mccann’s daddy have mccann ready for the new season? all-star again? journalist thinks so.

I am delighted to report that my new computer has been shipped. I’ll be able to stop in here regularly once it’s up & running.
jimmy, I think Mac will be an All-Star again too but then I’m biased in his favor. Hopefully we’ll have several Braves selected this season, since that would suggest that a lot of guys were having good years.

Thought I would drop by to see if anyone was home, the lights are off but I still think they are hiding in there. Oh well, guess I will call it a night, got a big day ahead tomorrow, hauling a load of trash off to the dump. I must remember not to bring back more than I leave home with.

The Hillbilly is kicking the swinging doors open this morning. Wow what a night here in my home state lastnight. This place is buzzing with excitement with the arrival of our new football coach. I was fairly disapponted in the way one of the Falcons players disrespected the University of Arkansas Football program in an ESPN interview, though. DeAngelo Hall said the Razorbacks can’t compete with the LSU’s and Georgia’s of the SEC. Maybe he forgot that we went to the SEC Championship game a year ago, and then beat #1 LSU this season. Maybe he also forgot, while bashing our school, that two of his Falcons’ team mates are U of A grads, and I’m sure they won’t appreciate getting slammed by one of their own team leaders. Of course what kind of respect should we expect from a guy who is rallying the troops with a FREE MIKE VICK t-shirt on MNF to support a convicted felon that got caught offing puppies in the backyard? I’ll have a whole bottle, Klobber, wherever you are.

hilllbilly, this journalist is hearing all kinds of bad talk about bobby petrino today. fact is, bobby wanted away from the mess that is the atlanta falcons. not saying anything was right about what he did but it does appear consistent with an organization with no honor, no integrity. falcons of a feather flock together. qb not truthful. coach not truthful. honor the convicted felon, trash the coach. need the va tech coaches to come in and control the mayhem. experienced with that element. and tommy nobis must be truly hurt by all this – class atlanta falcon (and there are many). what a messed up organization! better call marion campbell – only one that would take the job. alive? dead? make any difference? coach is not in charge. let arthur coach – always on the sidelines. mess.
that was stuff. now, baseball . . . picking the nose is not as bad as picking up in the night and leaving. but, cannot imagine wanting to be associated with that falcons team as now constituted. braves are fortunate to have better leaders. not going to see bobby trashed by a player and that player remain here.
and now, chop seal . . . wants to go to florida. thinks it is okay since named chop seal.

You can make bold, italics, bold italics, even in color. You need to use some simple HTML while writing the post.
I’ve tried several times to figure out how to post the instructions, but every time the program messes it up. I’ll keep trying. The HTML is really easy to do.
( I eliminated the long confusing instruction post and did it differently using a screen shot image. Link to instructions down a post or two.)

My machine locked up and My Lady beat me to the HTML explanation … WordPress allows a limited amount of HTML for comments … and I’ll look forward to seeing the instructions myself as my editor generates HTML that doesn’t seem to work for font size and color and things like that.
The start of an HTML Tag is denoted by the “” … commands that require closing tags (Like bold and italics) start with “</”.
For bold, I use the letter “b” rather than “strong” and “i” for italics … “u” for underline may work as well.
Hillbilly, after you posted your Sid Bream comment on “Baseball Magic Moment” I added a picture of “The Slide to my Post.”
Jimmy, I also commented about old Joe Nossek who’s younger than some of us who admit to being old.

Good afternoon all, Trying to get too fancy with the fonts always confuses me. I find it difficult enough to just make sure my spelling and grammar is at least presentable for those above a 6th grade reading level.
I am awaiting with baited breath (don’t get excited chop seal) for the Mitchell report to be released. Any bets on the number of law suites it will spawn as players claim there is liable and have been wrongly accused?
And how much credibility do people have left these days? Always someone vowing they didn’t until they are shown the proof they did…. Is this what people mean when they say someone is in denial? And what about the Queen of the Nile? Did Bob see Pam Tillis while in Nashville? Or maybe that was really Chop Seal.
And while no one is really watching, the Nationals are putting together a pretty nice little ball club. Stan Kastans said he was going to make sure Dukes “toed the line”, does he read this blog too?

And another fun factoid…… Did you know you can get over 600 pounds of pine needles in one of those DR County Home tow behind lawn vacuums? I didn’t either until mine got stuck and I had to use the front end loader on the tractor to move it.
Global warmer or no, I am cutting down another twenty of those pains in the butt next week. At least the oak trees give up their leaves and let you get your work done. Pine trees on the other hand require perpetual care.

So, I have written about “stuff” what about braves??? Ummm, hmmm….CF was covered pretty well above…..Will we get both Dan Haren and Johan Santana then????? No??? Well, who will win the lottery on those guys??? If it wasn’t the mets, I’d love to see some team in the NL at least get Haren. With talent only flowing one way(AL) Soon the NL will lose its AAAA rating, and become the equivalent of AAA!!! Most teams in the NL can still beat Richmond, right????

Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox will be in Rome for the sixth annual Hot Stove Gathering, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at State Mutual Stadium.
Also at the event will be Rome field staff members Randy Ingle, Bobby Moore, trainer Chas Miller and pitching coach Jim Czajkowski.
“Bobby Cox is a future Hall of Fame manager and we are privileged to have him participate with us at our annual Hot Stove event,” said Michael Dunn, Rome Braves general manager.
The Hot Stove Gathering will include hors d’œuvres and drinks throughout the stadium and the Three Rivers Club. There will be autograph and question and answer sessions, and door prizes will be handed out.

I’ve just received an email from a colleague who has been battling colon cancer. It’s a most thoughtful note and, though serious, may save someone else from this disease.

I know most of your posts concern pilots who have made their last flight west. Captain John Wilder sent this letter to all of his PSA counterparts and I think it is appropriate to share with all of our pilots before his passing. John is going over his flight plan and preparing for the flight we all must take. When this mans takeoff clearance is received he will be missed. A great pilot, Husband, Father,Grandfather, Son and a good friend to all.

Dear Family and Friends,
I have put down my thoughts on paper and Shirley is doing the typing for me as she is better at it than I am. I don’t think I could finish this quick enough.
First of all, I am sure you are surprised to hear from me. I’m surprised too. As most of you know, I have spent the last three years fighting colon cancer and it’s not getting any better. I can no longer take the chemo treatments as they have beaten my body to a pulp.
I cannot stress enough to everyone when they reach that Half Century Age mark to schedule themselves for a colonoscopy. If I’d only known, I wouldn’t be sending this letter. Actually if colon cancer is in your family, don’t wait until your fiftieth birthday—do it now! My youngest son had one and they removed two polyps that might have been trouble down the road. My tumor grew for probably 10 years before it gave me grief.
If I can save one person from this disease, then I have accomplished enough in my life.
I don’t have an actual prognosis as my oncologist is such an “Up” kind of guy he’s pretty good at sidestepping unpleasant topics. He said I could have months still, but he couldn’t be coaxed to say how many. Frankly, no one can really say for sure. So, I’m just in a holding pattern, waiting to take off for a new destination which people say is better by far than this beat up old world.
When I was a little boy, I looked up into the sky in the beautiful forest of Yosemite Park where my family was camping and saw an eagle fly through the air. I longed to be that eagle. But that night I woke up scared that I’d actually turned into that eagle. That experience stuck with me all my life.
God gave me the next best thing. With wings of metal and engines that roared, just like that majestic creature, through the clouds I soared. I’ve been privileged to view this earth from high above cities and wilderness and see sunsets that were too awesome to even attempt to describe. I’ve met and worked with some of the best people in the world and been blessed with more friends than I probably deserve.
Most of my dreams came true and I’ve had a very good life. Outside of a few episodes of turbulence here and there, my life with Shirley and the kids has been a very smooth flight. So I will sign off for now and wait until I board for my last trip. I have no fear of leaving except that I’d really planned to take a later flight. Oh well, that’s the way it is in the aviation field. Take care of yourselves and enjoy life each day to the fullest.

Dallas McPherson. Only 27, 64, 230 3rd baseman, has a .247 Career average(.261 this year with 7 homers in only 115 AB’s) 18 HR’s and 45 RBI’s in 360 career AB’s. I think he has been hurt a lot. But man, what a guy to have fill in for Chipper, and as a power left handed bat off the bench!
Chad Durbin His numbers don’t look all that hot, but he had a good stretch last spring/summer with Detroit as a starter,4.26 ERA pre all star break,(14 starts out of 18 games pitched) 5.71 ERA after(only 5 of 18 games where starts) then he became their long man for some reason, and he went downhill. Perhaps in Leyland’s dog house??? Just seems like too good a arm to be let go….4.26 ERA for half a season in the AL=2.26 in the NL! 😉 I know, we need another lefty starter like a hole in the head…..

I saw a clip on the local fox station when it was decided he wouldn’t be re-signed. They showed him hitting a homer against the Yankees at the age of 19. Hardly looked like the same guy! More upright, arms up higher, closer up on the plate…shoulda just gone back to that stroke last year, couldn’t have been any worse than the leg breaker stroke of the past two years…

Imagine what the insurance must be for that! And now shipping them all out west..He’s gonna NEED 60 mil!!!

JAMES Linger, only turned 17 on September 6, but is already knocking back contracts worth more than $100,000 to play baseball in the United States.
James, who has just gone into Year 12 at McAuley Catholic College, was about half-an-hour away from signing a $100,000 bonus and education contract with the Minnesota Twins at the weekend when his father and manager Mark Linger received a better offer from the Atlanta Braves. Mark Linger said he couldn’t disclose details of the Braves offer, but it was attractive.
He can’t sign with them until January, so we’ve decided to wait until then to decide who to play with, he said. There is a lot of interest (in James) at the moment. Mark said James had been getting nibbles since he became eligible to sign a contract at the age of 16 years and nine months.
They had been talking about $25,000 to $40,000, but we held off to see if something better would come along. The offer from the Braves almost came too late.
A representative of the Minnesota Twins was flying from Melbourne to the Gold Coast on Saturday afternoon with contract documents for the Lingers to sign and was only about 30 minutes away when they received the call from the Braves.

It is expected James, who is being groomed for second base position, will go to the United States for a short time next year to play in the Instructional League before returning to Australia to attend the Major League Academy. Then, if he makes it, he’ll be heading to Edmonton, Canada, the birth town of his mother Madeleine to play in the World Under-19 championships.
Despite the interest in James, there are no guarantees. If he doesn’t perform they won’t keep him, Mark said.

Speaking of insurance – it’s so dry here that sink holes are appearing, something we’ve never experienced before.
Yesterday a guy here drove into his driveway and the thing started caving in. He managed to get his truck out, but not without some damage.
I got to thinking about it; it could happen anywhere – and that is not covered under homeowner’s insurance or so-called ‘earthquake’ insurance.
Called my insurance agent. Come to find out there is a “Sink Hole Rider” that can be attached to a regular policy which covers that disaster. $58 a year.

And of course I just miss CL. Darn it! Just got this site put on Favorites on the new computer & had to fight with my login a bit. Still finding my way around on this thing. I keep accidently hitting Caps Lock instead of Shift. But it’s fast & the monitor is huge, vast improvement over the old one.

chop seal is working on a new blog. should be ready before the mitchell report. chop seal thinks certain endorsements could be lost when this report is made public. not saying who, just saying can happen. like having mike vick endorse air tran then blame air tran for not getting mike vick to washington, d.c. to see the congressmen. oh, the humanity! blame it on delta, not air tran, dummy! and air tran used to be value jet. and delta used to be on time. and bragging on 2 little cookies . . . that’s right, a flight attendant took the microphone and bragged about serving 2 little cookies to each of the passengers on a 1,900 mile flight! shame. shame. shame. still, hometown airline. only hometown boys no longer running. yankees. that’s right, yankees. now, in financial trouble and 2 little cookies.
and in baseball news . . . there is no baseball news until the mitchell report comes out. and then, oh, the humanity!
