ATLANTA – The ballpark on the corner of Hank Aaron and Ralph David Abernathy stands quiet for now. An occasional gathering of show cars will congregate in one of its parking lots from time to time on weekends. On holidays, Atlanta’s homeless come here to be fed and shown they truly are not forgotten.

Otherwise, all is calm at the Home of the Braves.

Driving past on the Downtown Connector Sunday afternoon, heading into the city with my best girl to wrap up our Christmas shopping, I cast my eyes toward Turner Field, its third-base side running parallel to Interstate 75/85.

“I want to sit on that side more this season,” my bride said, recalling the final game we attended in 2007 and how she loved sitting along the third-base side of the field, where she could look inside the Braves’ dugout.

(One may opine it’s a way for her not to lose sight of the strapping young first baseman who may or may not open 2009 in the same place he opens 2008. Let’s hope she’s staring at him in a Braves uniform for years to come.)

It’s moments like this, as the December winds usher in its frostiness, where I miss baseball the most. The ebb and flow of the sport’s day-in, day-out action becomes a backbeat to our daily existence, and it’s a bit lonely when November, December and January come to call.

But then we reach February, and it begins anew. It starts with a distant drumbeat, reverberating from ports of call far to the south, from Lakeland and Clearwater and Jupiter and, of course, the palace at Mickey’s Place, aka The Ballpark at Disney. It builds its steady crescendo with reports a plenty, news of this prospect and that newcomer, of this rehabbing star and that veteran contributor. It climbs until the symbols clash, the trumpets blare and, against the backdrop of red, white and blue bunting, Opening Day arrives with all the pomp and circumstance fit for a king.

Baseball is back; long live the king.

From there, the rhythm continues through spring and summer, through week-long homestands and West Coast road trips. Some days, the drums beat at a frantic pace, as the team rallies for late-inning victories, the starters dominate, the relievers throw pure gas and the stars pound out homers and doubles and clutch hits. Other days, the music slows, as the starters can’t escape the fifth inning, the relievers can’t hold the lead, the offense sputters and the manager adds to his “record” of seeing the clubhouse (or, to be factual, the hallway leading from dugout to clubhouse) before the final pitch is delivered.

Before you know it, September arrives. The playoff push is on for still most everybody in this day and age of the wild card. The days fly off the calendar, the drama builds, the music rises in volume until we reach Game No. 162. And then, for all but eight fortunate teams and their legions of fans, it’s over. Winter comes early; curses, foiled again.

We watch the Elite Eight battle it out during the next month. Postseason memories are added to our scrapbook, the heroes of autumn etched alongside Mazeroski and Fisk and Reggie and Gibson and Morris and Cabrera and Glavine and Jeter and Beckett and a hundred other names whose exploits when the music played at its grandest and the spotlight glared at its brightest will keep us warm for years to come.

Then, it ends. One team takes home the trophy, its fan base awash for all of time in the glory of residing – even if for just one year – in the hall of champions. But even the euphoria of winning the World Series cannot keep the cold Arctic winds from plunging south. The leaves fade and fall. The music goes silent. Baseball is gone, off into its winter hibernation.

And we find ourselves on a cold December afternoon driving past the place where grown men play a kid’s game, and we find ourselves longing for warm sunshine, the National Anthem, the sound of “play ball” and the return of baseball’s rhythm. On this, the coldest morning of the year along the southern rim of the capital city, how I long to see nine men in white uniforms standing on the green grass and brown dirt of my hometown ballpark. How I miss baseball so on mornings where the fingers don’t want to do their dance across the keyboard, where even the third cup of coffee fails to warm the body, where the slightest gust of wind makes me wonder if it ever will warm above 50 degrees.

But it will. The temperature will rise. The days will get longer. We will celebrate Christmas and the birth of our glorious Savior, taking delight with the fact our children know the real reason for this magical season. We also smile in thinking of the T-ball bat under the tree for one son, the baseball glove under the tree for the other one. We know it won’t be long until the backyard is filled with the sounds of summer, even if the calendar says spring has yet to arrive.

And in time, spring will be here. It will be time for the music to play its annual song yet again, and we’ll tap our feet to its rhythm as baseball takes us on another journey through another season. This grand ol’ game, for all its flaws and self-inflicted wounds, continues its march. And we, those who love it so, sing right along.

The Scribe abides.

Just back from Kathy’s follow up visit on her ankle surgery. All went well and looks good. She’s in a boot and is taking wondrous drugs and sleeping well.

Took snow pictures and will email the to the usual suspects later today. If I don’t have your email and you’re interested in seeing more than two feet of snow (accumulated-not all from yesterday), email me at lehartman@comcast.net and I’ll send them along when they are posted. Took the pictures with myself and Orca Dog for scale. Ddn’t even close the local roads, thought the few sidewalks are covered with four foot banks from the plowing.

Jut finished a Cold Ring Finger portrait. Never will I be able to view Glavine without thinking of Cold Ring Finger. JJS, it has infiltrated my concious. Alo have a nice Chipper (no deer, dead or alive) and a nice Smoltz. McCann comes next. Wurlitzers will be widely available after Spring Training, where I hope to have dinner with Jason and his wife and meet Savannah GUy, Florida Braves Girl and others. Really looking forward to Orlando. Won’t mind seeing all my kids, either. Got two married couples now. I’m getting old.

Scribe > What a great article and memorable story. You put into words what so many of us have felt for so many years. Saturday my wife and I drove slowly (traffic snarl) as we headed south, back home to Savannah. As we had more viewing time due to a much slower speed than the usual I-75 Daytona 500 past Turner Field, I got a good chance to study the stadium. It’s a nice vantage point.

Having just seen Gladiator (for the umpteenth time) I suppose I was in a mindset to see the mammoth, empty stadium as a Coliseum where so many glorious battles had been fought. There were no lions, swords, chariots or lancers…no violence at all with the exception of the occasional chin music, hard-blocking slide at second to break up a double play or a runner nailing a catcher as he guarded the plate.

With any imagination at all, you could almost hear leftover energy, like ghosts summer fans cheering their Braves on. The crowds seemed to roar as we drove past. Did Chipper hit a home run? Did Kelly round third on a base hit and slide safely home for the winning run? Did Glavine induce an inning ending double play grounder? Did Smoltz or Huddy blow away a batter to strike out the side?

The rain was beating down like a monsoon as we crept past the stadium that day. Turner Field loomed like a giant, cold, lonely monolith to the glory of summer and man’s humane and glorious pastime. Perhaps I was just hearing the sounds of traffic on the wet road and not the faint sounds of cheering crowds. Perhaps…

Thanks for the vision and the memories you shared. It was so well written that I felt as though I’d experienced a whole season with you. With your passion, it’s obvious that you do this for more than just a profession.

Beautiful, Scribe. What is it about baseball that inspires such poetic writing? I understand how you feel. I watch every Braves’ game except for the handful not on TV & this time of year I don’t quite know what to do with myself when 7:30 rolls around. Fortunately for me, my “other” sport, skating, runs opposite of baseball season but it takes up much less of my time. It’s even worse for my dad, the biggest fan I know. One of his Christmas presents from me is a T-shirt with a picture of a baseball reading “Life begins when the season starts”. It’s as if it was made for him.

Hi, Lew. I look forward to seeing you this spring… but be honest, is it meeting me or the potential cakes, cookies, brownies you’re anticipating?:-)

Esteemed Journalist-Yes, hope to share pie in Orlando with you, as well. Grinch will also be staying at the Hartman residence for a week.

Now,The Braves up the middle (how’s that for a transition, Oh Scribe?)-I’m not overly concerned. I think Kelly Johnson will be improved and having not worked so intensively all winter after rehabbing and missing a full season as last year, should be stronger and less fatigued by season’s end. We know he can hit. At shortstop, Yunel has considerablymore range and a much stronger arm than Edgar did. He is still somewhat erratic, much like a younger Furcal, but should actually be a defensive improvement over renteria, who should go down as one of the best Braves to ever play for the team. He will be missed, I’m sure on many levels.

As far as center field-All of the younger players mentioned, Anderson, Scaffer, Blanco or Lillibridge are extremely fast runners and excellent defensive players. It is their bats that may be the main concern. Replacing Andruw’s defense may not be possible, but we did well before he came to town (we never won much of anything WITH him)-I think Grissom was almost as good. We will be fine up the middle.

Lew, I agree. As strongly as Kelly picked up on the 2b position in general last winter, I think improving on that one particular flaw (to his right) shouldn’t be too difficult. I think the Braves will be fine up the middle. It’s behind the plate that I’m more concerned about.

Mainly eating high protein and lots of green veggies and salads. Even gave up the salad dressing in favor of Balsamic Vinegar. Boring. But healthy. My blood sugar is excellent and my cholestoral is 142. My toe healed and my eye is not getting any worse. My Doctor wants me to write a book about diabetic control and supplementation and wants me to talk to other patients. FlBravesGirl-Not will power-just the will to live and perhaps see Grandchildren. Three years ago I went to the Doctor with gangrene in my toe and the bone protruding-hadn’t even felt that it had been cut. In 40+ years of practice, my Podiatrist had never seen one that bad that he had not amputated. The infection was so bad it could have killed me. I was on super strength antibiotics for over a year. Since the osteomyelytis (bone infection) had not spread, he decided to wait on amputation. It took 2 1/2 years and much personal research about supplementation and alternate courses of therapy to improve circulation and to (hopefully) rid myself of profound neuropathy. Having a Doctor who actually respects his patient’s thoughts helped considerably. I have gone from being able to walk only 1/4 m,ile in a day to walking 1 1/2 miles EACH day-with no more limp. Saying the simple words that “my toe has healed” is considerably more profound than it sounds on the surface.

With massive doses of B Vitamins and an exercise regimen that I devised, he declared the toe completely healed several months ago-I am the first patient he has ever seen this happen to and they are thinking of writing a case study. I used to have complete numbness in my feet and legs up to mid calf. Now I have feeling on the soles of my feet and the horrendous feelings from the neuropathy have disappeared-at least up to 90%. My Doctor has already begun to implement my exercise program and to advocate B Vitamin Therapy-all because of your’s truly. The Esteemed Journalist never said a truer thing-Toes are NOT to be trifled with-especially mine.

I’ve been diabetic for over 20 years and on insulin for almost 17. I’ve been on amost every medication they have devised and know more about nutrition and vitamin supplementation than most Doctors-many of whom are and idiot. There are several very beneficial vitamins he needs to take now. A diabetic can’t make it just on Flintstones or a multi vitamin. Email me.

Sir Guy, the Fly is always welcome … surely there is a simple way to associate different avatars with different masks … though I know not what it is. When time permits, I’ll restructure so that such reports can be made as posts on a special page … rather than as comments.

Methinks my personal views on the whole matter are scattered among the comments on Braves and Stuff but I’d personally like to see a list of those who actually refused to assist the Mitchell Investigation … whatever that means … and the reasons given for the refusals.

While I don’t totally agree with the notion that those who have knowingly cheated or … taken advantage of a flawed and/or corrupt system … should be forgiven, I do concur with the notion that MLB, individual team ownerships, agents, player’s union, media and the power brokers within organizations “funding” the sport/business of baseball are more responsible than are the individual players themselves.

Esteemed Bob, Journalist > Knowing you pretty well, I would imagine that Mr. Fly and myself would most likely agree on many or most of the right and wrong of the steroid issue. It’s an extremely complex issue that is complicated further by so many guilty parties.

The Daily Buzz tried to deal with the issue from a little different perspective than those seen around Blogville east, west, north and south. No doubt Fly could have gone on and on to clarify certain aspects…but then we would have had a Fly report that rivaled the Mitchell report in length.

The bottom line I believe is this: right or wrong, legal, technical or philosophical, sometimes we have to fix what was broken and move forward. Looking back or dragging out an endless inquisition with resulting court battles will not achieve anything useful at the end of the day.

Was Nixon right to not challenge the vote results in the Kennedy election? Was Gore right in not continuing to challenge the election? Nixon did the honorable thing and accepted defeat as to not throw the country into chaos. Gore was a less honorable story, yet had the same outcome.

That’s how I see the whole steroid affair. Will proper justice be served by dragging this this through courts for the next five years? I think not. Will some guilty cheaters get off light? Probably. Sad but true it is. Will some innocent players be tarnished by the overall scandalous years that they played? Sad but true again I fear.

The steroid fix is not to be found in the rear view mirror. The fix is in the dedication to finding advanced technical testing, education and meaningful follow through by the MLB. Then we might see a level playing field in 08 without using a bulldozer to accomplish it.

Berigan-I never was sold on Edmonds being as good as his reputation might make him seem. For him to have been voted into the all time defensive team to the exclusion of Andruw was absurd in the extreme.

Given how much everyone gripes about the time Chipper msses, do you think the hue (don’t you just love different uses for art terms?) and cry will be when he misses 50 games? Besides, were he to miss 1/3 of the season, one of those rookies so many are so upset about would be in the lineup, anyway. Don’t see the use in picking him upo, $$$ or no. Makes barely more sense than picking up Mark Prior-which would make someone and idiot.

Medieval? Aganst you? Never. Peace, Love and Never ending Pleasantness. May you receive Christmas Visions of Unicorns, Drummer Boys and SugarPlums (what ever THEY may be).

My better half and I had a discussion over lunch about the whole steroids issue and MLB. As is the norm, she made some very good points about steroids and how it has such a detrimental long term affect on the body and why doctors restrict its use to three injections when treating joint injuries.

The main point being that steroids have a very harmful affect on the bones. Anyone remember the name of the pitcher for San Francisco who broke his arm while making a pitch several years ago?

It would make sense as to why so many players have become brittle over the years. The sad thing is the number of high school kids who feel compelled to take steroids in order to compete. Of course, that could be an entirely new topic all on its own.

Most honorable Bob, J. I would love to get into a political discussion with you sometime. I might tease you once in a while but you might be very surprised at my political leanings. However, out of respect for the Lady of Carolina I will not engage with you on such topics on her site. Not going to hunt on her property either come to think of it. I would be too easy a target……

    Lopez
    Francouer

Conspiracy? Fill more seats? More women in the stands? Maybe more men? Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

    Just received this in email:

    THE SANDS OF CHRISTMAS
    by Michael Marks

I had no Christmas spirit when I breathed a weary sigh,
And looked across the table where the bills were piled too high.

The laundry wasn’t finished and the car I had to fix,
My stocks were down another point, the Chargers lost by six.

And so with only minutes till my son got home from school
I gave up on the drudgery and grabbed a wooden stool.

The burdens that I carried were about all I could take,
And so I flipped the TV on to catch a little break.

I came upon a desert scene in shades of tan and rust,
No snowflakes hung upon the wind, just clouds of swirling dust.

And where the reindeer should have stood before a laden sleigh,
Eight Humvees ran a column right behind an M1A.

A group of boys walked past the tank, not one was past his teens
Their eyes were hard as polished flint, their faces drawn and lean.

They walked the street in armor with their rifles shouldered tight,
Their dearest wish for Christmas, just to have a silent night.

Other soldiers gathered, hunkered down against the wind,
To share a scrap of mail and dreams of going home again

There wasn’t much at all to put their lonely hearts at ease,
They had no Christmas turkey, just a pack of MREs.

They didn’t have a garland or a stocking I could see,
They didn’t need an ornament–they lacked a Christmas tree.

They didn’t have a present even though it was tradition,
The only boxes I could see were labeled ‘ammunition.’

I felt a little tug and found my son now by my side,
He asked me what it was I feared, and why it was I cried.

I swept him up into my arms and held him oh so near
And kissed him on the forehead as I whispered in his ear.

‘There’s nothing wrong, my little son, for safe we sleep tonight
Our heroes stand on foreign land to give us all the right,

To worry on the things in life that mean nothing at all,
Instead of wondering if we will be the next to fall.’

He looked at me as children do and said, ‘it’s always right,
To thank the ones who help us and perhaps that we should write.’

And so we pushed aside the bills and sat to draft a note,
To thank the many far from home, and this is what we wrote:

‘God bless you all and keep you safe, and speed your way back home.
Remember that we love you so, and that you’re not alone.

The gift you give you share with all, a present every day,
You give the gift of liberty and that we can’t repay.’

I look at it this way, giving Javy a go at backing up McCann really has no downside unless he is just flat out done. Everybody has a bad year in Baltimore, goes with being on a last place team.

Gives the Braves a right handed bat off the bench and 37 is not exactly over the hill. He can play a bit of first base too. Better than Thorman actually. Going to be a fun spring training.

Gil, we all wear masks, and about the only ones we really fool are ourselves but, much benefit can come from understanding one’s politics and perhaps a proper forum for that too can be found … the only thing I know about politics is that only those who get elected have much chance of getting their agendas effected … unless of course, they own the ones who do.

That being that if you cannot name and do not know either the e-mail address or phone number of your councilman, supervisor, alderman, selectman or what ever title one might have for their local representative, I will not take you seriously because these are the people who directly affect your everyday life. Personal property taxes, zonings, real estate assessments and just about everything else that affects you day to day begins on the local level. 🙂

If Javy can produce as a pinch hitter with power, he is signed for $750,000-IF he makes the Braves. Pretty cheap if he contributes, not too expensive if he doesn’t. Can’t be any worse than Craig Wilson. Besides, I still have an unsigned Javy drawing and he’s real good about signing.

I taught her US geography by putting a great big map on the kitchen wall and putting colored pins in the cities where the Braves would play. Then we read up on those cities and states. Blockbuster Video had a section of travelogue-type things that they loaned for free. Made a great teaching tool!

    NEW RULES FOR 2008

Some of you may have seen this before. George Carlin wrote it, changed the year, edited it just a tad (cleaned up bannable language) and thought you might get a kick out of some of these:

    1) No more gift registries. You know, it used to be just for weddings. Now it’s for babies and new homes and graduations from rehab. Picking out the stuff you want and having other people buy it for you isn’t gift giving, it’s the white people version of looting.

    2) Stop giving me that pop-up ad for classmates.com ! There’s a reason you don’t talk to people for 25 years. Because you don’t particularly like them! Besides, I already know what the captain of the football team is doing these days — mowing my lawn.

    3) Don’t eat anything that’s served to you out a window unless you’re a seagull. People are acting all shocked that a human finger was found in a bowl of Wendy’s chili. Hey, it cost less than a dollar. What did you expect it to contain? Lobster?

    4) If you need to shave and you still collect baseball cards, you’re a dope. If you’re a kid, the cards are keepsakes of your idols. If you’re a grown man, they’re pictures of men.

    5) Ladies, leave your eyebrows alone. Here’s how much men care about your eyebrows: Do you have two of them? Good, we’re done.

    6) There’s no such thing as flavored water. There’s a whole aisle of this crap at the supermarket. It’s water, but, without that watery taste. Sorry, but flavored water is called a soft drink. You want flavored water? Pour some scotch over ice and let it melt. That’s your flavored water.

    7) Stop screwing with old people. Target is introducing a redesigned pill bottle that’s square, with a bigger label. And the top is now the bottom. And by the time grandpa figures out how to open it, his ass will be in the morgue. Congratulations, Target, you just solved the Social Security crisis.

    8) The more complicated the Starbucks order, the bigger the asshole. If you walk into a Starbucks and order a ‘decaf grandee, half-soy, half-low fat, iced vanilla, double-shot, gingerbread cappuccino, extra dry, light ice, with one Sweet-n’-Low, and One NutraSweet,’ ooooh, you’re a huge jerk.

    9) I’m not the cashier! By the time I look up from sliding my card, entering My PIN number, pressing ‘Enter,’ verifying the amount, deciding, no, I don’t want Cash back, and pressing ‘Enter’ again, the kid who is supposed to be ringing me up is standing there eating my Almond Joy.

    10) Just because your tattoo has Chinese characters in it doesn’t make you Spiritual. It’s right above the crack of your ass. And it translates to ‘beef with broccoli.’ The last time you did anything spiritual, you were praying to God you weren’t pregnant. You’re not spiritual. You’re just high.

    11) Competitive eating isn’t a sport. It’s one of the seven deadly sins. ESPN Recently televised the U.S. Open of Competitive Eating, because watching those athletes at the poker table was just too damned exciting. What’s next, competitive farting? Oh wait, they’re already doing that. It’s called ‘The Howard Stern Show.’

    12) I don’t need a bigger mega M&Ms. If I’m extra hungry for M&Ms, I’ll go nuts and eat two.

    13) If you’re going to insist on making movies based on crappy old television shows, then you have to give everyone in the Cineplex a remote so we can see what’s playing on the other screens. Let’s remember the reason something was a television show in the first place is that the idea wasn’t good enough to be a movie.

    14) And this one is long overdue: No more bathroom attendants. After I zip up, some guy is offering me a towel and a mint like I just had sex with George Michael. I can’t even tell if he’s supposed to be there, or just some freak with a fetish. I don’t want to be on your webcam, Dude. I just want to wash my hands

    15) When I ask how old your toddler is, I don’t need to hear ’27 months.’ ‘He’s two’ will do just fine. He’s not a cheese. And I didn’t really care in the first place.

    16) If you ever hope to be a credible adult and want a job that pays better than Minimum wage, then for God’s sake don’t pierce or tattoo every available piece of flesh. If so, then plan your future around saying, ‘Do you want fries with that?

Funny thing, he says much the same things I have about various players. Most interesting comments about Doug Clark. Appears also that Gregor Blanco is determined to become a major leaguer. He also mentioned Alexis, funny. I don’t remember anyone saying a word about him until I mentioned him on a DOB blog one afternoon.

Top of the morning, everybody! First and foremost, thanks so much for your kind words in regards to my post above. Thanks to CL for letting me hit leadoff on the blog, and I’m glad everybody enjoyed it. Be glad to lead off anytime you need for me to do so.

Now, Javy (there’s your transition, esteemed Journalist Jimmy): I loved Javy when he was here. He was a HUGE part of our success. BUT, I just don’t think he adds that much. He always was a defensive liability and he’s done nothing offensively the past three seasons.

But the Braves did the right thing in offering him a minor league deal. If he doesn’t cut it at Lake Buena Vista, you simply cut him free. No harm, no foul. I just don’t think he’d be better than Pena, Sammons or Miller. We shall see.

I wish Javy well. Nice guy, good kid who had a great run here. But at the end of the day, it’s about constructing a roster to compete for a championship. Bringing back Glavine? He helps (13 wins, 23 quality starts, decent ERA, fills a dire need of a durable third starter). But bringing back Javy? I just don’t see how this will help, unless he’s able to play solid defense once or twice a week and be a good bat off the bench.

We shall see, as they say.

    Enjoy your day.

SCribe-You are hardly the first I’ve heard in the past couple of days that claimed Javy was bad defensively. I also, rememebr him as sub par defensively.

However, I checked with Baseball Reference and found out something that stunned me. I compared Javy’s career defensive stats at catcher to Johnny Bench’s-widely consider THE best if not one of the best defensive catchers ever. I was shocked. Now, while I realize that stats don’t mean everything, except to Shaun, here’s what I found. Career Fielding % Javy .992 in 15 seasons with 96 Passed Balls-50 of which were in 98 or previously. Bench-.987 F% in 17 seasons, with 94 Passed Balls.

Now, I would never compare the two (for fear of ridicule, if nothing else), but I was completely stunned how close there stats actually were. Maybe Javy was not as bad as we have thought.

I don’t know that Javy can make the team. I have questions about his offense, since his last several years played were less than stellar and he missed all of last year. However, he was always in good physical shape and maybe he can add a power bat coming off the bench, He only costs the Braves $750,000-IF he makes the team-if not, then he is not a problem. He will either go back to Peurto Rico or to another team. The Nationals seem to be happy with our discards. They just signed Willie Harris AND Pete Orr. Wow.

Lew: How is life in snowy Vermont? It was 26 here yesterday morning, 29 this morning (I think it’s up to 33 now on the Santa Claus thermometer on the back patio, as I sit out here wondering why in the world I’m sitting out here when it’s 72 and toasty inside).

Now, Javy (transition): I think the knock on Javy is partly because he wasn’t as mobile behind home plate as some would’ve liked — he always had a cannon, though; just ask Manny, who he picked off from first base in Game 2 in the 95 Series. Part of it is Maddux wanting his own person catcher — however, the best game I ever saw Maddux pitch in person, the two-hitter in Game 1 of the 95 Series, Javy was behind the dish.

I just don’t think Javy can help this team. I’d like to be proven wrong, but the Braves need somebody who can play 30 to 40 games and provide enough consistent offense, not to mention be valuable pinch-hitting, and provide solid enough defense. I have my doubts about Javy, much as I’d like to see him make it.

Now, bullpen (more transition): I see somebody posted on the Chop Chick “blog” this morning their thoughts on Blaine Boyer, and how he looked like he doesn’t want to be part of the organization anymore. That’s asinine, and unless the person who has posted that has talked to Boyer recently, it’s also inaccurate.

Boyer, if healthy, is a big part of the bullpen nobody is talking about. Throws hard, showed in 2005 (prior to injuries) he can get hitters out at the big-league level. He’s from the northwest suburbs of Atlanta and wants to get back to his 05 level, and do so here. Certainly, there are a lot of arms ahead of him but, if he’s healthy, Boyer has as much talent as anybody down there.

The bullpen’s top four are totally locked in, with Soriano, Moylan, Yates and the lefty Ohman. It’s my belief the Braves should go north with two lefties, so Ring gets a spot if he can throw strikes in camp. That leaves two spots, and I think Acosta is a step ahead of a very crowded pack — a pack that includes Boyer, Devine, Stockman and Resop, among others — for the sixth spot.

Now, toes (yes, toes transition from the Scribe): When the weather is cold and one feels the need to sit on the back patio with a good cigar and a cup of coffee, one must make sure the toes are taken care of and are protected from the elements. Hence, TWO pairs of socks this morning before slipping on the sandals.

As the wise always say, toes are not to be trifled with.

SCribe-Yes, Javy isn’t what he once was, but we’ll see. Like I said, he costs hardly anything and if he can add some bench power, can he be any worse than a right handed hitting Thorman?

Now Boyer (yet another Journalistic transition). I met and spoke with Boyer for about 15 minutes at ST year before last. He was a heck of a nice kid and even requested a drawing, after signing one for me as well as signing a baseball. I sure hope he can return to form. He’s a good kid and he definitely has the talent. Again, we’ll see.

    Lew and Scribe,

At first glance, it does seem like Lopez could provide some pop off the bench, but remember this:

Cox isn’t going to use his backup catcher in the pinch hitting role, hardly ever. Almost always the last man off the bench, so what kind of value would he really be as a pinch hitting option? Better not rely on him as our right handed pop off the bench. That said, he would get a game or two each week to swing the bat most likely in day games after night games.

Hillbilly-I would prefer to see Brayan Pena in the role-not to mention his capabilities of playing 1B,3B and the outfield as well. I’ve never understood BC’s reticence in not giving the guy his chance. He’s always hit well and should be an ideal back up. However, it will be nice to see Javy once again at ST in a Braves’ uniform. He was always extremely popular and I guarantee I’ll get some Wurlitzer autographs from him, if nothing else.

Esteemed Journalist-I always got the impression that BC did not use Salty to keep him from harm’s way and not to have him hurt before the deal went down. However, I would like to see him keep Pena and a catcher. That way you have a player who can back up any position, a pinch hitter and still have an emergency catcher in reserve.

well, lew, that might be right but jimmy smith thinks bobby was saving ol’ salty in case bobby needed a catcher late in the game or in extra innings. jimmy smith agrees that pena would be a valuable player off the bench. journalist thinks pena did a commendable job at catcher before getting hurt. that night the canaries got in pena’s head. jimmy smith did not think a player could lose a job to injury on a bobby cox team. but pena did. and then pena played all kinds of positions in the minor leagues. what is the grand plan? maybe pena is more valuable now than ever. jimmy smith likes the pop in the bat but remembers one of the biggest homeruns of the past season was from corky miller of jo jo and corky. it sure will be fun to see how the pieces fit. jimmy smith thinks this team is improved already – some by addition but much by subtraction. will bobby be forced to play some youngsters or will a mondesi or jordan be found somewhere? or a javy? oh, the jumanity!

Good morning all, I am going to go against the grain here a bit and say I think Javy is going to be a great pick up. He was batting .337 last year in spring training but the Rockies wanted to go young so they released him. He played hurt a lot while with the Orioles and it showed. During an interview last year Javy stated the only club he would consider a back up role with would be Atlanta because he did not really need the money.

I can remember those passed balls too, but McCann isn’t exactly Charles Johnson behind the plate either. There is a very good little item on the Braves site about Javy working out with Chico. I guess someone has to load the pitching machine…… Ever seen how the work out a catcher? Move the pitching machine to about 40 feet from the plate and fire away in the dirt. Scary… Better be wearing a “Nutty Buddy”…..

Carolina Lady, I hope you visit the blog site I posted overnight and add this blog to the list, the more places you leave your calling card, the more likely you will gain visitors.

Who do you use to fill your 5 reserve spots? I know some of it will have to play out in ST, but there are so many different ways to go about this.

Blanco/Anderson (assuming one will start and Schafer will be in AA)
    B. Jones
    Aybar
    Infante
    Prado
    Thorman
    Pena
    Lopez
    Miller
    Sammons
    Lillibridge

Things to consider: Infante and Pena could be 5th outfielders. Lillibridge may get some outfield time. Thorman is out of options. Prado can’t play shortstop and has less offensive upside than Aybar.

I think it is way too early to speculate on the reserves. I think there are some trades that will be made that will take some of the afore mentioned names out of the equation. We are never but one freak off season injury away from everything being thrown into an uproar.

I do think the it will be Javy’s spot to lose as far as the backup catcher’s position is concerned. The Braves will likely move Sammons to Richmond to play 80% of he games. It is only a two hour plane ride to Atlanta from Richmond and there are at least 15 flights a day going that way.

Bryan Pena is the kid on the bubble. He needs a really good spring. Aybar may end up in Washington which has become the land of misfit toys. Of course the Nationals can afford to take a chance on these guys because they are still building their pitching staff and are several years away from being a threat.

Too early to speculate? Never, my friend, not here on the hallowed Braves and Stuff …

Somebody over on DOB’s blog suggested the Braves may carry three catchers. I don’t see any way of that happening, unless you consider Pena a catcher. And he is, along with being a first baseman and third baseman and who also played some in the outfield.

Right now, I see bench locks being Infante, the backup catcher (either Lopez, Sammons, Pena or Miller), whoever isn’t starting in left on a particular day (Brandon Jones or Diaz).

That’s three. The fourth spot depends on what happens with the fifth spot. Either Aybar or Prado makes the team as a backup infielder who can play third base and second base. Aybar is better offensively. But, if the Braves were to keep Pena, who can play third and first and catch, then I could see a scenario where both Aybar and Prado make the team.

If Thorman is traded, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he is, then maybe Aybar, Prado and Pena make the team, joining Infante and Lopez/Sammons/Miller on the bench. Otherwise, I think Thorman’s going to go north since he’s out of options, he can play first base (Heaven’s forbid Teixeira goes down for an extended period of time) and the Braves remain high on him despite his dreadful 2007 campaign.

Now, Boyer (transition): Lew, Boyer is a really good kid. Talked to him a few times here and there back in my previous life. I know how bad he wants to make it with the Braves. He’s seen a lot of his buddies he came up with (Wainwright, LaRoche, McBride, Langerhans, etc.) get dealt away, and sure, he wants to play in the majors. But I think he has a great chance, if healthy, to be a big-time contributor in a bullpen that is shaping up to potentially be one of the best in the majors.

Now, Lillibridge (transitioning back to the bench; stay with me, gang): I don’t see any way Lillibridge makes the team unless he absolutely kills the ball in spring training and gives the Braves no choice in the matter but to take him north. There always is the slight chance he’s going to win the job in center, but I think the Braves really want to give Schafer a long, hard look, and I think the Anderson kid has a good shot at the job if Schafer needs more seasoning (and he probably will; kid’s never played above Class A ball).

I don’t think you can have Lillibridge languishing on the bench in Atlanta. He needs to play every day. He’s not playing much at short behind Escobar. Barring injury, he’s not playing much at second. If Chipper gets hurt, Aybar has the experience so he’s the likely one to get most of the ABs over there.

If Aybar has overcome his personal demons, I think Prado may be squeezed out of the mix. Infante can play second to back up KJ.

Gil, your insights never cease to amaze … who would have thunk that Pena and Aybar could pitch … and for the Expos no less! I do agree that such speculation is premature since there are so many contingencies to consider … though I agree on Javy, if he’s healthy.

I think that it would be in Aybar’s best interest to be playing for another team or in the minors … in Atlanta, he’ll be under a microscope and while there’s a large contingent of fans wishing him well, there are also many vocal ones just waiting for him to fail. While it too may be premature speculation, one would think his emotional makeup may indeed continue to be suspect and/or fragile … and, while it depends on how it’s harnessed, fear of failure can be a powerful, disabling force … as can be fan abuse.

One of my favorite Javy Lopez memories was in 2003 … when he came to the plate in the last of the ninth with 2 outs and the tying and winning runs on base … hit a scorching line drive in the gap … he had bested the pitcher and it was then that I knew he had found it! Most remember how he finished the year but, that’s what I remember best!

Yes, a great catch meant we lost that game and people thought I was crazy for being so excited! If he will but remember to use his levers, best the pitcher, and not to try to hit long flies, he’ll be fine … I really hope he makes the team!

Ma’am-Had to get out of the house today, so I finished (and started, for that matter) my Christmas shopping. Spent all of $50 and gave the rest to the Food Bank. Got to go call the Grinch and see which house he wants his present sent to. Nothing much going on. It’s cold (two below when we got up) with lots of snow. Not too many shoppers, though.

Bob, I must remember to be clearer in my prose so as to not confuse the masses. What I was referring to, although I think you are pulling my leg, was the fact that the Nationals have no delusions they will be winning a championship this year or next year for that matter. They are in the process of building a pitching staff and therefore can take chances with low cost position players who are reclamation projects that can have good outcomes if they pan out.

As for Pena, he plays third base about as well as Chipper can play shortstop. He plays first about as well as Gerald Perry. He is still primarily a catcher. His main strength is he can fill in just about anywhere and has a decent bat. He is also Yunel Escobar’s best friend.

Since I have not seen Javy play in a while, I’m going to have to defer to others on how good he is now, or not…. If he can still play I think he has a tremendous up side. Certainly as good as Corky Miller. I would think the Braves would rather have Sammons playing most everyday in Richmond than sitting on the bench in Atlanta. He is so young that I think you could put him in the same category as Lillibridge in that regard.

I see our old friend Chad Paronto has signed with the Astros for 1/2 mill… Chad is a cool guy but unfortunately he was a 10 pitch pitcher…. What I mean by that was after he threw about ten pitches he could no longer find the strike zone….. T’was ugly…. And who will fill his pants not that he is gone? and Wickman??? I think the Braves found out that between those two, Delta was using too much extra fuel on the charter flights. Could Chinco be next?

CL…thought of you straight away. For mothers with daughters…but I suppose with sons would work as well! From the mouths of babes!

My mother taught me to read when I was four years old (her first mistake). One day, I was in the bathroom and noticed one of the cabinet doors was ajar.

I read the box in the cabinet. I then asked my mother why she was keeping ‘napkins’ in the bathroom. Didn’t they belong in the kitchen?

Not wanting to burden me with unnecessary facts, she told me that those were for ‘special occasions’ (her second mistake).

Now fast forward a few months…. It’s Christmas Day, and my folks are leaving to pick up my uncle and his wife for dinner. Mom had assignments for all of us while they were gone.

Mine was to set the table.

When they returned, my uncle came in first and immediately burst into laughter. Next came his wife who gasped, then began giggling. Next came my father, who roared with laughter.

Then came Mom, who almost died of embarrassment when she saw each place setting on the table with a ‘special occasion’ Kotex napkin at each plate, with the fork carefully arranged on top. I had even tucked the little tail in so they didn’t hang off the edge!!

My mother asked me why I used these and, of course, my response sent the other adults into further fits of laughter.

‘But, Mom, you said they were for special occasions!!!’

Isn’t it easier to just tell the truth?! ????????

perhaps virginia madsen could be persuaded to visit gil, however. virginia is a nice girl who now believes in santa (yes, virginia, there is a santa claus) but, virginia has a little ice cream problem just now. virginia can eat two tubs of ice cream in about 3 minutes. let me know if you’d like a visit. if so, gil should begin stocking the freezer now.

and now this about paronto . . . good sinker, bad conditioning. sinker sinks for 10 pitches, then goes flat. paronto then overthrows and loses control. pants could be problematical. santa will bring big chad some new pants for christmas. must remember to deliver them to texas.

So funny, Salty!! Kids will do you in every time!!

When my daughter was about 4, she went through this VERY dramatic phase. I was packing to go to work (3 day trip) and, with big alligator tears rolling down her cheeks, she begged, “Mommy, don’t leave!”

I told her that if I don’t go to work we won’t have any money to which she replied, “We don’t need any money.”

Me: “If we don’t have any money we won’t be able to buy groceries.”
    She: “We got groceries.”

Me: “We won’t be able to buy your new clothes.”
She: “I’ll wear the ones I got.”

Everything I could think of, she had an answer for.

    Then!
Me: “I won’t be able to buy any new toys.”
    She: silence……..snif……….”When you gettin’ back?”

But of course, post away. I’m not the author, but the world woudn’t be what it is if kids didn’t do and say the things they have. Magic moments.

My boys used to lay on top of each other (pig-pile) when they’d watch television…back in their 3-4 year old days. Once I overheard them go, ‘Ewww….yech’ to a kissing scene (very tame, I might add!)! Then the youngest asked, “What are they doing?” The wise older one replied, “They’re having sex”, which elicited yet another display of disgust.

Then the younger asked, “What’s sex?”, to which the older replied, “Beats me!”

    Gotta love the innocence!

Stories by a certain beat reporter for the AJC on 12/5 and 12/6 cited Wren as not being aware or interested in Lopez. Then a story dated 12/17 says a Braves coach has been working with Lopez at the school that Frank Wren’s kids attend since October.

Top of the morning, everybody. I see the snowstorm must have moved out of my avatar because now there is a picture of the Braves piling on top of each other on Oct. 28, 1995.

And I was blessed to be sitting in the upper deck, Aisle 323, on that glorious night. Yes, the ticket stub hangs in a frame upstairs, next to my Wurlitzer of AJ.

Now, Javy (noted transition by the Scribe): I, too, remember the stories denying interest in the aging (aren’t we all, by the way) catcher. But one thing to remember: Your sources are not going to tip their hand each time. It happens that you will ask about something, you’ll get a denial and you’ll know that’s not the case. But if you can’t confirm it with somebody, then you can’t run with it. It’s frustrating, but part of the game.

I don’t know if anybody got played … I just think it was a source protecting information. It happens.

Now, teenagers (more transition): My teenage years were a blur, in more ways than one. My kids are, thankfully, years away from reaching that stage. But teenagers often imitate what they see or hear, so hopefully, all those little girls looking up to the “clean-cut” Spears will get a good talkin’ to from their parents last night.

Now, Tex (final transition; fish to fry this morning): No biggie on the knee. Turns out it was loose debris and not a loose body in his knee. Methinks if Tex, who is a big dude anyway, had a loose body in his knee, then we would’ve known about it before now.

Thx again for all the kind words on the post. Glad to see we’re getting good traffic on here.

And at least Tex’s toes are OK. Toes are not to be trifled with.

Now, other blog (transition): Shaun is talking stats, Coach is talking options and DOB is talking Javy. Stats and options and Javy, oh my! Somewhere, the T-shirts still are in the mail. And what will Santa bring to the CC blog this Christmas?

Enough, already. I’m ready for a tuna sammich.

And pie. Because tuna and pie are key to toe health, and you know what we say about toes …

    The Scribe abides.

Yes, Scribe, many are coming over to BravesandStuff. Some still do not know Carolina Lady has this new blog.

Now, Stuff. Christmas pies at the Anthony house are as follows: Primary Pies: Pecan, Mince Meat, Pumpkin, and Sweet Potato. Secondary Pies: Apple, Peach, Cherry, Blackberry, Strawberry, Key Lime, and maybe chocolate or lemon ice box with a meringue. Of course, the season dictates the pie. New Years will feature Mama’s famous Blackeyed Pea Pie with cornbread crust. Other ingredients are too secret for disclosure here where unscrupulous journalists may find them and post them on less popular blogs. Mama’s recipe secrets must be kept. LeTwan does not know how Mama uses the WD-40 in her pies but it seems to work pretty well and the pies are very popular.

Afternoon all, Yes, the Tuna would be a big catch for the Falcons. It is going to take a few years but best for everyone to just stay out of his way while he builds a winner. Don’t expect him to be on T. Owens Christmas card list though. The good news is the Falcons could hardly get any worse. Well, maybe trade places with the Dolphins but that is another story.

acb1…. Still waiting for the mushroom story…..

a big box just arrived for jimmy smith for christmas. and it is from frank! that’s right. frank! what could frank be sending this journalist for christmas? the package is bigger than a canned ham should be and it is probably too thin to be a cheese sampler (these are typical gifts for journalists). what could it be?

and why is frank sending jimmy smith a gift? christmas spirit? or is frank seeking to curry favor with this journalist? does frank think that this journalist might be persuaded, or disuaded, or marinated by the mere acceptance of a gift? well, frank had best re-think that. jimmy smith abides by strict journalistic ethics and would never sit on a story or hold back on something that might be embarrassing to the organization merely because of a gift given to this journalist by someone with whom this journalist must interface day to day. certainly, that could never happen with this journalist. and jimmy smith is a bit uncomfortable with the first name business of calling frank, “frank”. homeboy upstairs did not wish to be called “john” by this journalist. and this journalist would hesitate to call homeboy upstairs “john” because that is too familiar if jimmy smith and homeboy are to maintain a professional relationship. so, journalist is going to return this gift right away to this new homeboy and remove any suggestion of impropriety. “what? what, baby seal?” a new mac? really? journalist is in need of a new computer. “what? a macbook pro? a macbook pro 17″ 2.4 GHz? oh, the humanity! thank you, frank!”
