ATLANTA, GA – Hello, Everbudy!
Thank you Carulina Lady for letting me be a beet writer. I know I have been a pest about the expenze account but I have to keep up with the other beet writers in town who smoke cigares costing up to a dollar. I will try to be better behaved.
Where will we stay at Spring Training? And where are the really good seafood restaurants there? Where do we find the best bowl of whelk? Since I now have an expenze account I will be treating.
And where is the best place to obtain a player’s autograph? I would like someone big to be with me when I ask Chipper Jones because I do not want a signature on my hide.
And since this is the hi-tech blog, bloggers here should consider if a motion-activated butt-cam might reveal the truth about steroid injections. We would need someone crafty (artsy?) to install the camera, though. 🙂 😀 🙂 😀
And not many seals get the chance at beet writing. Carulina Lady is the bEst! But here are some reasons why I want to be a collumist instead.
a beet writer goes into a restaurant and is seated. All the waitresses are gorgeous. One of them comes to his table and asks, “What would you like, sir?” He looks at the menu and then grins and answers, “A quickie.”
The waitress turns and walks away in disgust. After she regains her composure she returns and asks again, “What would you like, sir?” Again, the beet writer answers, “A quickie, please.”
This time her anger takes over, she reaches over and slaps him across the face with a resounding “SMACK!” and storms away.
A man sitting at the next table leans over and whispers, “Um, Pal, I think it’s pronounced ‘quiche’.”
Let me share some New Year’s Rezalutions:
1. Become a Colummist Quick
I have not always been a beet writer. I was once a baby seal in Canada and I was almost clubbed to death there before Jimmy Smith came along. Just before the big club swung, Jimmy Smith shouted: “No, not him, he’s a journalist.”
The big man seal clubber hesitated, drew back his club and snarled, “Is he a beet writer?”
“No”, Jimmy Smith fibbed, “he’s a colummist.”
And the feersome clubber lowered his club and let me live. I am grateful to Jimmy Smith and now I help him meet girls. I want to be a reel colummist soon in case the seal clubbers come back.
2. Releese the new Chop Seal Bobble-Head
Bloggers wiill be glad to know that the new Chop Seal Beet-Writer Bobblehead will soon be available to all bloggers here. A beet-writer bobblehead has been tried only one time before, unsuccessfully, by another beet writer – but the head was so big that there was no bobble. There will be plenty of wobble in the Chop Seal bobble.
3. Become the best beet writer until i can be a collumist.
“What, what Carulina Lady? already the best? Oh, thank you!”
Beet writing doesn’t pay much but it is okay if you are a seal or don’t date much. Being a beet writer is important stuff if you have been a seal mostly and I promise to do my best to get the story and get along well with others without getting too big for my britches.
I am heering all kinds of beet writer stories.
A beet writer was walking down the road with a healthy looking pig under his arm. As he passed the bus stop, someone asked, “Where did you get that?”
The pig replied, “I won him in a raffle!”
Here is one of my favorate beet writer storeez:
Two beet writers went to the pound where each adopted a puppy, er cat. The joy of their new best friend was quickly overshadowed when they got home and the first beet writer said, “I think we’re in trouble, how are we going to tell them apart?
This led to several hours of concentration until finally, the second beet writer said, “I’ve got an idea. We’ll tie a red bow around my kitty and a blue bow around yours.”
The next day the first beet writer comes running up to the second when he got home, “Oh no, I can’t tell whose kitty is whose… they’ve pulled the ribbons off while they were playing.”
“OK, we need to find a better way to tell them apart,” says the second beet writer. After several more hours of concentration, they came up with the bright idea of getting different colored collars.
Again, the next day, the first beet writer comes running up to the second as soon as he gets home, “Oh no, I can’t tell whose kitty is whose… they’ve pulled their collars off while they were playing.”
“There’s got to be some way to tell them apart,” says the second beet writer.
After several more hours of concentration, the first beet writer finally comes up with another idea, “I know! Why don’t you take the black one and I’ll take the white one!”
This is why I want to be a colummist. Or a broadcaster like Chop Caray.
And now some baseball . . .Seal transition. I hope I am wrong, but the Braves could be in trouble next season. The starting pitchers are old and brittle and the rotation may come apart at any time.
Winning early is never important to Bobby Cox and he often fritters away early season games, then, when the team must win late in the season, there are holes from injury and such. And the team does not respond well to must-win situations (see playoffs).
If Bobby Cox is to remain manager of this team I think they should consider every game as important as the next and try to get off to a big lead in the division before the old guys drop. If/when the old-man rotation falters this may not be a pretty season.
Then again, this team could dominate with bionic arms and other enhancements.
Questioning this team is not normal beet writer stuff and may not play well for this Seal but Chop Seal has courage and Carulina Lady likes me.
And now, one last beet writer story:
A salesman is driving toward home when he sees a minister thumbing for a ride on the side of the road. As the trip had been long and quiet, he stops the car and the minister gets in. After a bit of small talk, the minister notices a brown bag on the front seat.
“What’s in the bag?” the minister asks the driver.
The driver says, “It’s a bottle of wine. I got it for my brother; he’s a beet writer.”
The minister is silent for a moment then says, “Good trade.”

Nicely done Chop Seal. I hope that you get that expense account soon. While you are at spring training you should check out some of the sushi restaurants there. Plenty of fresh fish.
And just for the record, the seal “clubber” should not be confused with “Klobber”. I like seals and many other living beings. I’d never club a seal, especially one so talented as Chop Seal!

This Braves and Stuff blog has everything! Now we have an up and coming beat writer well on his way to becoming an honest to goodness columnist right in front of our very eyes…from a little Baby Seal to a little Chop Seal. Can a Cox-ish nickname be found? Chopper? Would Skip say chopper to Chopper?
That was an excellent lead story Chop Seal. Without any hesitation or hedging of superlatives I can say, you are the very best beet writer I have ever seen. Be patient, the spelling will come along too!
So many denizens have shared their personal stories when they come up to bat with their lead post. Thank you Chop Seal for sharing your personal story of how you survived the clubs in Canada. That must have been a scary time. 1970’s? Thanks to Journalist Jimmy Smith you were spared and now have a nice home and a budding career following in the Journalist daddy’s footsteps. Does he take fancy steps? Spins? Dips? So many questions…
Speaking of footsteps and seal clubs, were the clubbers in Canada just like the ones in America? When Jimmy Smith saved you, were youstaying alive amongst the dangerous clubbers by disguising yourself with a pointy collar shirt, a white three piece disco suit and patent leather shoes? That was smart of you.
It’s a good thing the journalist rescued Baby Seal from those clubbers. Who knows what Baby might have experienced? Club 54? Biker Bars? Snowcaine? Baby Seal, are those clubbers still around? If so, they need to be investigated, convicted and sentenced. They can just burn. That’s right, burn, Baby, burn is what I say to them.
In the mean thyme, don’t ewe worry about yur speling young Chop Seal. We awl make mistakes and due that sumtime. It was a grate story and Kutoes.

Jimmy Smith told me bad spelling woudl stick out on this blogg, not like taht other blogg. I am going to work with Journalist Bob on my spelling and methinks. Still, good enough for a beet writer for now. All foam , no beer. Will have to improve for colummist. Can’t wait for Spring Traning.

Disney is very PC, Chop Seal. I’m sure they wouldn’t discriminate against you. Besides people come from all over the world to Orlando for vacation & some of them look very unusual. The Japanese sense of fashion, for instance, tends to be … um, interesting.

Risk verses reward for taking HGH and other PEDs… Ask Marcus Giles what the difference is between being on the “juice” and relying on natural ability. Appears to be about $5 mill per year.
I am very inclined to be suspicious of any power numbers put up by players prior to 2006. I think it is going to be a long time before we see big home run numbers for multiple players again. There will always be a small hand full who will do it but it will not be the norm to have 4 or 5 guys hitting the long ball.
They better start thinking about hitting the gaps and less on those upper cut swings resulting in warning track fly balls.

That little Hungarian was the best Japanese detective I ever saw … of course he wasn’t a bad German, Russian or Italian either.
I see that Jimmy Smith has far more influence than initially thought … the hearings have now been postponed so as not to interfere with National Pie Day!
Of course, if PEDs have a cumulative effect … one would think that the “off season” would be the “on season” for their taking, so as to be “ready” when Spring Training starts … and if material effecting were to take longer as one gets older, then some might even defer making an entrance.
The Mitchell Report is long but does it reflect all that was found? Well, we may find out more in February than the skinny on our pitchers and catchers.
$1,000,000 is an obscene amount of money, even considering the deflated value of our currency … it’s a team sport … pay each player on the active roster $500,000 a year … that’s only half obscene, but it’s still a lot of money to be paid to kids for playing a game, especially if they’re cheating.
It’s a lot of money if you’re defending your country, teaching our youth, counseling the misguided, selling insurance, building houses, catching crooks, fighting fires, growing crops, attending the sick or caring for the elderly!
Where’s the perspective? Take the Fehr out of Baseball … If you play well, and by the rules, you’ll get to keep your job! If you don’t, you won’t!
With the money saved, the cost admission to games could be restored to reasonable levels … or they could just give it to me!

Bob,, Glad to hear that! 🙂 I am very familiar with Charlie Chan, as he and Sherlock were my Mom’s favs, but never saw many Moto’s. In fact, I think I only saw one before, and was not impressed. But, these are very good so far, and I like how menacing Lorre is in these early ones as well. Kills without a care, then goes back to being this humble little man!
Actually, didn’t watch a Moto last night, went modern, and watched a Banacek(from 1972) Anyone remember this TV show? George Peppard long before A-Team. Very cool guy, rich, who solves mysteries that seem impossible on the surface….like a football player disappearing after being tackled on live TV, or how a race car was stolen from a moving train….

Noble idea of spreading the cash around Bob but you know it is not going to happen, any more than we will see a drop in gas prices or a roll back of the price of sugar. Price will only go down when demand is low. I bet you can get tickets to any soccer game in Tennessee for pennies on the dollar.
I used to go to a lot of University of Richmond and/or William & Mary football games for free. Still can if I so choose.
The best box seats at the Diamond are $10 a pop. General admission is $6 and sometimes less than that. Equivalent seats in Atlanta would be $300… To be honest, I would just as soon watch a Richmond game. The park is less crowded and the seats are less cramped. I know, I’ve been to both.
I am beginning to wonder if I want to renew my MLB package this year. I can watch 16 games the Braves play the Nationals without extra cost. I’m telling you guys, I may just go fishing more this summer. If I am going to pay through the nose, I may as well be able to restock my freezer.

True story…… I used to wear a feather on my hat whenever I was at work. I am not even sure what type of bird it was but I found it one day while checking the ash pond at the plant. It was a fairly large feather and I suspect it was from one of the many wild turkeys that roamed the compound.
Now, I would not say a word about the feather but would wait until some unsuspecting supervisor would ask me what the feather was for. I would look them straight in the eye and tell them “I keep it just in case they need a feather for their cap, I will give them mine, just so they wont feel the need to pluck one from my a**”.
Now that I think about it, maybe my reputation of being disrespectful was deserved. 🙂

I am beginning to feel that maybe I should give MLB the entire bird because they sure have been plucking a lot lately.
There comes a point when I just don’t have the extra cash to throw around because some jerk thinks he is worth so much more. I would much rather play a round of golf than watch Tiger Woods play a round. Life is too short to continue to line the pockets of someone else.
I am starting to feel that way about baseball too. I cannot remember exactly when I fell out of love with college basketball but I sense the feeling is coming on with baseball. I am tired of the cheating, the sniping, the denials and the greed. Someone needs to get things back on the right path or I may be spending my summers on a fishing blog when I am not on the water.

this is from the ajc.com article touting fanfest. admission is $15. looks like the ajc article may have been written by the braves p.r. department – maybe frank, frank’s self. anyway, it is wrong to use the word “free” – perhaps at no additional cost would be better.
chop seal has been so excited today! and chop seal thanks chop seal’s many fans. today, after the blog appeared, chop seal broke wind, smoked a cigar, and ate some cheese. a real beet writer. but wants to be a columnist as soon as possible.
and gil makes a good point about baseball. fans can grow weary. jimmy smith loves baseball but jimmy smith also loves to read. and to paint (something lew does not know). jimmy smith recently painted some cabinets. other diversions can be found.

Chris, I know Lew would say big deal, but if that trade goes off, it is a big deal. Without him, I don’t see how the Mets can compete with the Braves and Phils.
Santana is a big improvement over Glavine, and adding him to John Maine, fellow lefty (and as we all know, braves killer) Oliver Perez, and a possibly healthy Pedro Martinez, means their staff could be better than ours….

Gil, I hate to see you give up on baseball…I understand it…I gave up on the game after both big strikes, but like Al Pacino said, “Just when I thought that I was out they pull me back in” 😉
We all tend to focus on the negative, I try to remember folks like Scott Thorman busting his butt down the line, teams like the Diamondbacks, and Rockies truly play team ball….it’s not fair to blame them for being paid so much, I am sure 90% of the guys playing today, would play for 5 bucks an hour…..Even Clemens showed guts to me coming out of the bullpen in Houston at his advanced age, risked future millions doing that….Do wish I had a magic wand that would set top pay at about $100,000 and top ticket prices owners could charge at $10…yeah, that’ll happen…..

Gil, I still love March Madness but I think my love for college basketball waned when Kevin Garnett went pro straight out of high school. Ever since then the best high school players go straight to the pros or they stick around for only a year. The NBA adopted that stupid rule recently that they have to spend at least a year in college or be a certain age. I guess that was to help the NCAA but to me it only hurt the game. I would rather that kids who were not interested in playing college basketball not be forced to play if they would rather be in the pros. Sticking around for only a year does not solve the problem. It only perpetuates it. I never get mad at a kid for going early at all but………
What has turned me off college basketball is that the kids don’t stick around. There is no continuity. It used to be that these kids would have storybook careers. I hate Duke and hated Christian Laettner with a passion. But it was so much more fun to hate a guy for his entire 4 year career. It was cool to watch him hit some big shots in the tourney as a freshman, hit that shot against Kentucky, get killed by UNLV, and then come back the next year and beat UNLV.
You used to be able to know all of these teams. If you watched a team in the tournament last year, you generally had a good idea who would be back next year. But these days, it seems like as a fan, you have to learn all over again who the players are every year. As soon as I get to know who they are, they are gone to the pros.
I wish there were more 4 year players and continuity and stability. It leads to more storybook careers and makes it so much easier for me to love or hate certain players or teams. Without it, I become easily disinterested.
The best thing that could happen is for the NBA to act like MLB and develop their own legit minor league system and let the true scholar athletes play college basketball.

Gemina the “crooked-necked giraffe,” one of the Santa Barbara Zoo’s most recognizable and beloved animals, was euthanized Wednesday.
“We observed a decline in her appetite over the past two weeks and she had stopped eating all together,” said Alan Varsik, the Zoo’s Director of Animal Programs and Conservation.

I am thinking more along the lines of something like the Northern Independent League. I am just really tired of folks like Selig telling me black is white and up is down. Like Lew says, MLB just doesn’t pass the “quack” test for me.
Sorry folks but I am feeling very cynical tonight….. Must be the rain…. and the return of cold weather….. and wishing I could go on vacation tomorrow to some place warm.
Maybe I should cash in my IRA and buy a sail boat…. Costa Rica is looking better all the time. To bad I cannot speak Spanish….

No Berigan, it won’t happen because the “demand” isn’t there … most view it as “other peoples money” and them what don’t find it easier to “demand” higher wages than lower prices … and the beat goes on.
I try to remember folks like Scott Thorman busting his butt down the line, … I’m sure that Gill does too … no question that Scott tries hard … too hard … and too rarely had he the opportunity to bust his butt … so it’s hard for us old guys to remember. Me, I try to remember folks like Andruw busting theirs down the line … try, and try and try. Being fair, Andruw busted his butt most every plate appearance, but it was usually from falling on it.
No, it’s not fair to blame them for being paid so much, …; we’re the ones to blame. However, if the owners thought as you, I am sure 90% of the guys playing today, would be receiving 5 bucks an hour!

Gil, I believe someone has rained on your parade of late, my friend! Don’t take it so hard. The only time I’m ever shocked is when the game turns out to be straight. It just isn’t human nature. By virtue of the law of averages, there are a few decent folk that hide away in the woods (or blog on CL’s blog) but I wouldn’t trade a handful of shinola for the average person these days. Just the way it is; no need to bust a vessel over it.
For all you elderly military types, Santa just whipped back around and brought me a 50th anniversary of D-Day commemorative issue genuine Benrus wristwatch, complete with canvas GI case and hatch for synchronizing so I can be like the Duke. Amazing how many old farts (including my history teacher) have come up to me in the last few days and started reminiscing. Growing up in the battery powered era, it’s awful hard to remember to wind this thing every morning (which puts me in mind of a saying, but I’ll just let it slide).

Grinch, I have a functional “Chairman Mao” wristwatch, brought back from the mainland a few years back … methinks the communists in China are much more capitalistic than their Russian counterparts. It too has to be wound every 25 hours … and loses perhaps 2 minutes a day … but, it is a good conversation piece, provided you’re careful about who you let see what you’re wearing.

Bob, I imagine it’s a whole lot safer to wear that watch now than it used to be, and equally sad that the people that recognize mine are dying off. I have a Russian Spetznatz (communist-era special forces) hammer-and-sickle belt buckle displayed in my library that was given to me by a Green Beret friend who won it in a fair fight overseas from it’s original owner. It’s amazing how many people I have to explain to now what country it comes from.

Chop Seal, getting back to the subject of restaurants; just across the interstate from Disney is the Gaylord Palms resort ( “sister” to the Opryland hotel). In their upscale buffet-style restaurant, they have a cheese buffet. Perhaps this is where the journalists will gather?

FGB had best be careful what she calls her baked goods if she’s looking for global domination. Belgian authorities have destroyed a shipment of more than 3,000 bottles of California-made sparkling wine that was labeled Champagne … Bravo!!

True baseball fans will understand this … most others won’t … unless they’re from the Champagne region of France.
Rumor has it that the soon to be released De Decker Report names the players who are guilty of cheating so as to be able to better compete … looks like the culprits knew better than to try such shenanigans here in the States but underestimated the Belgians … thought they wouldn’t be able to read the labels since they were written in English … said they’ll sue the Belgians as soon as think of anyone famous enough to sue … personally, I think they’re bluffing, … still hurting from that waffle judgment a few years back.
General reaction here in Nashville, especially around the Greyhound Station, is that it is sad … all that stuff going to waste … about what you’d expect, … the Sounds are a Milwaukee Brewers farm club.
All we want is a level playing field … and since many cheat, one way to accomplish that goal is allow everyone to so do … then our heroes can be the ones who cheat the best … maybe they already are!
I prefer a different approach …
“You can’t identify all of those who cheat and it isn’t fair to name and punish just a few” … sounds like something Big Al might have said to the IRS.

Great marketing idea with the Chop Seal watches…. Now you only need to determine which market you are going after, The cheap, $2 per watch kiddie crowd made in China or the high end Rolex folks by offering the Chop Seal as an alternative to the President. You could even contract the SCAM BAGS for distribution services.
FBG…. Do think it to be too far fetched to start out small and grow into a major cooperation with your baking. Only depends on your own desire.

I always loved German beer … loved it so much that it darn near killed me! It helped me to relax … lots of folks drank more than me but I took prescribed blockers for hyperactive Vagus nerves that slowed down the processes expelling the alcohol from my system … unfortunately, it was long after the fact when my doctors recognized the problem.
Fortunately, one doctor suggested that the impurities in the beer could be the problem … and had me switch back to a light Chevis and water … 96 ounces sounds about right … 84 ounces of water … but Mama always suggested 72, sans the Chevis.
That was years ago … these days, the 96 ounces is still about right … 8 cans of Coke … worse than the beer, but still tastes good!

Gil, I just don’t get it frankly, unless they want a guy who is considered a leader. I know he was injured last year, but .214 is .214. Again, like signing a Cameron type player, it’s the kind of signing you expect from a last place team trying to get lucky and hope a guy rebounds. If it costs us 4 Million, and Devine(as mentioned on the other thread) thats just too much! Give a rookie a chance for goodness sake! It was only 80 AB’s but he hit .188 after the all star break……

“Fettucini Alfredo is macaroni and cheese for adults” … Carol and I visited Alfredo’s a few years back … maybe we were just lucky but, it was a blast and the signature Fettucini was great! A table near us included an Italian Opera singer who sang beautifully … a friend of the chef who was just having a good time … but it was good, free entertainment … and the chef “Alfredo”, supposedly a great grandson, was delightful as well!

All Kotsey needs to do is hit .240 and it’s his job for the season…..sigh….I am just a bit negative, ain’t I? 😛

To be frank, that’s a disappointment … and just when I was beginning to get excited … Kotsay at his very best, he’s better than mediocre, but he can’t be expected to at or near his best … offensively or defensively. Maybe it’s Frank that’s the disappointment.
Oh well, maybe Frank’s got a point … it’s best not to disappoint fans when you’re new on the job … and how can they be disappointed if they don’t have positive expectations?

All that has been heard throughout much of the Hot Stove season is wringing of hands, gnashing of teeth, moaning, wailing and griping that we just COULD NOT let rookies, no matter how talented, replace Andruw Jones in center field. They now have gotten exactly what they wished for-a player another team no longer wanted (whatever the reason) and no rookie in center field.
This is known as being careful what is wished for,as you may actually get it. Look at it like this-if he fails, you get one of those rookies and all it will cost is Joey Devine, who Bobby Cox resolultely refused to give a chance and $2million, which everyone insists we have to waste. Live with what you desired. You now have it-whether for good or ill.

What I really don’t get about the deal, is how much money Oakland is paying towards his contract! I mean, they are paying him 5+ million NOT to play for them! Lew, to me that is bad news….I can understand splitting the risks 50/50, but basically we gave them a hard thrower so they would make him a 2 million dollar risk for us.
They need to save money more than we do, they have no fan base to speak of. Why pay us 5 million, unless after watching him day after day they don’t think he is worth 7 Million….
Do you think it’s a good deal Lew??? He only played in 56 games last year, after having back surgery. He had 28 ab’s in August of 2007, then was shut down for the rest of the year. In 2006, he only had 65 ab’s in August, and 53 Ab’s in September! And they were in a playoff team that year. Why can’t the kid from Houston, or the myriad of Braves outfield prospects get a shot??? I know, I know, they will if he’s hitting .180 and it’s July….

Berigan-I was more than happy to let Anderson and Blanco show what they could do. They are both excellent defensive center fielders and would have provided enough offense to make it a worthwhile look, anyway. I certainly was not in favor of picking up Cereal Dude Crisp or Mike “I’ll Miss The First Month of The Season” Cameron. If Kotsay can put up career average numbers while plaing 140+ games, it will be a decent deal. If not, Oakland got a little retribution for the Hudson deal.

What say Kotsay?
Sure didn’t see this one coming. But then, who does? Certainly not this hot-stove neophyte, to be sure. I’ve wanted a vet in CF on a one-year deal to give the kids more time but the vet I had in mind was a more recently consistent bat or a threatening power hitter to backup Tex in the 5 spot. Kotsay’s had very good years but has fallen way off the last few. All back related? Many questions arise. From what I’ve read, he’s one of the good guys.
Suppose if I’m willing to give benefit of doubt I’ll have to include Mark Kotsay and Frank Wren. The GM is holding the cards and we’ll find out if he’s got a winning hand soon enough. I’m still hoping Liberty boosts payroll a bit to give us the best chance given all the givens. Is that naive? I don’t expect them to try to match Yanks and Bosox, Mets or LA salaries, but bumping the Braves up the cash would be great.
What would another 7 or 8 mil buy us? Another starter? But then, ten million here, ten there…pretty soon we’re talkin’ big money, right? Maybe I’m still living in the glory days of the 90’s. Top salaries don’t buy a ring and they’re not a guarantee as we’ve seen so many times with lower tier teams in the playoffs and WS, but it sure doesn’t hurt the odds. Right now we’re right in the middle of the pack with MLB Salary Comparison.
So, I’m pretty OK with the trade. Maybe Kotsay is a choice for a tight budget consideration. Maybe Kotsay is a solid clubhouse guy that can play while sharing time in CF while tutoring one of our young’uns. Maybe FW has something up his sleeve that will all make sense when we see his picks in the context of the final roster in April…or June. The proof will be in the pudding, not the cookin’.
We shall see.

When does a team that valued an asset at over $7 million, sell the asset for $2 million plus the marginal cost of acquiring a lesser asset?
I don’t know but would not bet against their having revalued that asset at less than squat … maybe they just want to help Frank … or saw him coming.
Who has the best information on the value of its assets, the owner or the buyer?
Again I don’t know but maybe home field advantage is more than hype.

Not that I am a big fan of the Giants but a lesser fan of Jerry Jones. 🙂 I wonder if this is the end for Wade Phillips? Seems like a good guy, maybe he would look good on the sidelines for the Falcons. Might be available after the Cowboys tanked… Oh the curse of Jessica Simpson….

Hi, Chris! That’s an alarming article. Don’t these people ever stop to think about the risks of putting this stuff in their bodies? Apparently not. They just believe whatever their “trainer” or whoever says about the “magic pill”. It scares me that so many people are so stupid.
On a cheerier note, got a brief message from the Grinch & he says the housewarming party was a great success. It remains to be seen what constitutes a successful party in Grinch’s eyes. 🙂

Gil, the Jerry Jones is going to have an interesting decision to make regarding his head coach. Of course, Wade Phillips is currently the head coach but Jason Garrett is their offensive coordinator. Jones hired him last off-season before he hired Phillips but didn’t know exactly what role he would play. Garrett is widely considered to be a rising offensive genius and several teams have been interested in speaking with him regarding their open head coaching jobs. The decision that Jones will have to make will be whether or not he should fire Phillips and promote Garrett or risk losing Garrett to another team.
The situation with my Florida friends is highly complex. The groom has been ill with a terminal illness for twenty years and while they had a church wedding they were never legally married because they were afraid of what might happen to the “blushing bride” if his medical bills became overwhelming. He didn’t want to ruin her financially. Some details have changed and they decided that they could make their relationship legal.
CL, I like the idea of your new page and will look at it when I have a little more time. Hopefully I’ll have a few pics of Frenchy to post after this Friday’s banquet.

Howdy, all…just got a sec. Much work to finish. Gil, Wade Phillips was our DC under Reeves and interviewed for the HC job then. Blank said no thanks and hired Mora the lesser. He won’t come back under same ownership for the same reason Reeves won’t. It just don’t work that way. Besides, all else aside he’s a great DC but a little too friendly and nonchalant for a HC. Dallas should have whipped the $%#@ out of NY today and didn’t…they’re 13-3 and lost to a mediocre team in the playoffs for a reason. He doesn’t quite have the fire.
FBG, had you been there you would have been impressed. What constitutes a successful party for me now is different than what it used to be (much more grandiose and classy, many fewer cops called). But then I’m old now. 🙂

It really is a shame so many coaches are unhappy with their current situation.
True story… I was relating to an acquaintance once on how I had bought several different sets of golf clubs in the pursuit of improving my game. I told him I was still searching for the perfect set. Pretty bluntly, he said to me, “You know the one common denominator in your game don’t you? It’s you. don’t blame the clubs when you are the problem.”
I must say it made me realize I could blame everything else for my poor scores but until I fixed me, nothing else would help. I can truthfully say, today I can play equally bad no matter what the cost of the equipment. 🙂 That being said, I no longer chase after rainbows but look for real solutions to problems. I also am a lot more content to play my own game and be happy with that too. If God had wanted me to be Tiger Woods, that is who I would be.
Too bad many owners of sports franchise don’t see that the problem is themselves. No matter if it is greed or incompetence, the results are the same.
FBG… Grinch isn’t old yet… He just understands he is no longer a kid.

Chop Seal, that is an excellent question. You’d think that these bozos would realize that they are in trouble and would get together to clean things up. It’d be a lot less embarrassing if they would just do it themselves. Plus, if Congress gets involved, they may put some rules in place that neither side is going to like.

Salty-I saw the same report. I grew up in and around Philadelphia in the 50’s and 60’s. WE got lots more snow then than we do now. The snow we’re getting right now is relatively normal, any given year-it’s the 65 degree temperatures interspersed with sub zero that makes one wonder what the hell is going on.
It was 63 last week and will be below zero by the end of this week. 80 degree swings in a two week period would indicate to me that something is, at the least, different. Knowing humanity (or the lack thereof) we probably had something to do with it.

THIS JUST IN: The Richmond Braves apparently are on the move to Gwinnett County, a suburban county on the northeast side of Atlanta. There is a story on the AJC site; a buddy of mine just hit me up with the news as I was heading into a conference call.

I would feel bad for fans of the Richmond braves….what is their annual turnout up there???? And some other thoughts off the top of my wee brain…..what would be the turnout of fans up in Gwinnett Co. ??? And if there would be decent turnout, why would fans of baseball there pay for the gas to drive thru all that traffic down to the Ted, and pay much more to see a game there? Sure, it would be major league baseball, but some fans who can’t see games on free tv (or hear them on the weak at night WGST)might just say to heck with the Atlanta team…..

Chris, saw your question. I have visited the Mighty 8th on several occasions. Is it worth the stop while traveling down I-95? Well, let me put it this way: It’s an awe inspiring, chill bump-raising, American pride trip back in time to the view an important piece of the tip of our greatest generation’s spear that literally changed the world with their ingenuity and their sacrifice.
Inside, you can read first-hand accounts of the battles. You’ll see pictures and memorabilia that display some of the finest individuals that ever graced this country with their brave service. Yes, it’s worth a stop…a long stop.
So, next time you travel south, plan a few hours extra and check it out. Sometimes, if lucky, you’ll even meet one of the men that were there. Best do it soon, as time and tide wait for no man…even the heroes of the Mighty 8th.

Well, they news did not get any better for me while I slept last night. Usually this is the kind of thing that is reported on a Friday when the interested parties are unable to do anything about it. I have not forgotten when VCU was left holding the bag when the Metro conference became Conference USA. It only cost the league a couple of million to buy VCU off.
This is a link if anyone is interested to what is being reported in the Richmond paper. Personally, I have a lot of resentment but being an old Union guy, I have seen lots of promises broken. That does not make me any less resentful. It just reminds me of the song “Smiling Faces”.

Top of the morning, denizens, as the sun tries to melt the frost away from the grass here on the southern rim of the capital city.
And what will be on that ground in 48 hours? Sleet? Ice? Maybe a little snow? A scribe hopes so, as his kids are all giddy with excitement.
Either way, may not take on the freelance stuff this weekend. May drive to the mountains so the kiddies can revel in the white stuff that’s expected to make quite an impact on the hilly terrain far north of the Home of the Braves.
Now, home of the R-Braves (transition, but bear with me, as it’s cold out here and the fingers don’t wanna work this morning): Buford Braves? Ah, a decade ago and I may have been covering them. Now? I’ll gladly drive up from the southside on occasion and check them out. Meant to get to Rome and Chattanooga for games last season. With family in Chattanooga and in Cumming, doesn’t make sense not to make it an outing from time to time.
I don’t think having the AAA Braves in Gwinnett will hurt attendance at all at Turner Field. I do think it’s a great thing for baseball in the metro area, though, as you’ll have plenty of folks on the northside of town who will go see the AAA team play on a weeknight, when otherwise they would’ve stayed home. If you’re going to see the big-league team, then you’re going, and I don’t think having the AAA team around is going to change those plans most of the time.
What the Richmond team moving to Gwinnett offers is an alternative. You still can go to an Atlanta Braves game on the cheap; how else did we afford to go, as a family of four, to 10 games last year (I went to several others with friends, a few with just my best girl, and a few by myself)? I think you definitely will see a lot of folks supporting the minor-league franchise. Gwinnett draws well for hockey, which isn’t exactly as popular as baseball with the general sports populace here in the ATL.
Now, other stuff: I’m really proud of the blog for topping 10,000 hits. Carolina Lady is to be saluted for giving this group a place where we can chat about baseball and other stuff. Even though I haven’t been posting, I’ve been reading when able. Things here have been busy, and we will be moving in six weeks into a new house, for which we’re very blessed and excited.
So, if you don’t see me posting on here, know I’m reading, and I’m proud of the way this blog has taken off. Good job, everybody.

Scribe-Kids giddy with excitement over snow? You could put them in my back yard and not need to worry about them until May. They would be ecstatic-for about an hour and a half. No one builds snowmen in Vermont-they would be fifty feet tall by spring.
Would all denizens who plan to make it to Spring Training between Feb. 15 and Feb.29 email me lewhartman@comcast.net I’m putting together print books so everyone can have something to get autographed. I will have to ship them to Florida and I need to have an idea how many I will need. I want everyone to have one, but do not care to pay to ship more (both ways) than I need to. I will try to send one to those who don’t make it there and will have attending denizens help get a few autographs for y’all (see Bob-told you I’d get you something), but still don’t want to do any more than is necessary.

Gil, sorry to hear about your loss of the Braves in Richmond. That’s gotta hurt the Braves faithful there and probably you more than any other. We’ll miss your scouting reports. By the way, will they complete the 2008 season before moving? Hope so. At least then you’d be able to watch another season and perhaps make it a little easier to let the change set in. It’s never easy to lose a team. Better to have loved and lost…?
Savannah has seen its share of changes over the years with our single-A, Sally League team. We’ve had so many teams through here over the years it’s been hard to follow and difficult to get behind a team for long. In the grand scheme of it all, I suppose it’s good to see lots of affiliates, since they aren’t Braves.
We’ve had quite a history with the old stadium here. In modern times we’ve had the Washington Senators, then the Braves were here from 1970 to early/mid 80’s. Next the Cardinals, Dodgers, Rangers, Expos-Nationals took turns parading through. Teams have arrived and departed Savannah more often than Rocky sequels. Well, maybe not quite that often.
Now we have the Mets franchise (sigh). As much as I’d like the Braves to come back here and settle I just don’t see it happening. Then again, with all the surprise, unannounced comings and goings, who knows? Maybe the Braves take another turn in the coastal empire. Old Grayson Stadium is like a box of choc-o-lates…
The good news is that they are restoring the stadium here and planning a series of upgrades such as new 300 square foot video scoreboard, field surface, field lights, sound system, right field grill, luxury suites, and upgrades to the kid’s area and such. Whatever the team, the league or the level, it’s good to go out to the old ballpark and watch the games.
Here’s hoping Richmond can land another team, then you could at least go out and watch when the Braves come to town for your minor league reports.
Have you considered a move to Atlanta? You could get a big moving van and relocate! Be sure to grab Bob and Carol on the way down. Southern Braves migration of sorts. Could get a duplex?

Four decades later, he was manager Jim Fregosi’s pitching coach when the 1993 Phillies won their unlikely NL pennant. His ace was Schilling, who had come to Philadelphia the year before as reliever uncertain of both his stuff and his future.

Yesterday, Schilling noted Mr. Podres’ passing on his blog, 38 Pitches.
“Outside of the Lord, my wife and my father, there was no person who impacted my life more than Johnny Podres,” Schilling, now a staple with the world-champion Boston Red Sox, wrote. “He asked everything of me and always got everything I had. He made me realize the only limits in my life were self-imposed.”

savannahguy…. After being served with the divorce papers, it is hard to just say okay, it’s just business. Perhaps if Richmond was one of those merry-go-round cities that change affiliations every five years perhaps I would feel differently. However, after 42 years you really develop an identity with players and clubs and I feel like I’ve been spurned for the cute secretary that is all shiny and new after putting up with all the crap the Braves have sent here over the years.
I understand the purpose of a minor league club and that is to develop major league talent. Okay, mission accomplished. I do not blame the Braves entirely. The mayor of Richmond had an opportunity to have the Braves stay forever. He blew it. So, where does that leave me? Good question…. There are a dozen major league franchises closer to Richmond than the Braves. Already we have the Eastern League and the Souther League salivating over the huge hole that the Braves will leave.
I may not even attend a game this year. I would rather the Braves just go, good riddance and they can take their little dog Toto with them too…..
It would be different if a new stadium was not in the works but Richmond wanted to redevelop the entire area. Not just build a ballpark. I expect now there will be no new park. Just some patching to the existing one.

“Hopefully, they’re doing it in their own living room, so that nobody else has to watch them,” second baseman Kelly Johnson joked.
John Smoltz added, “I’d like to see the instructor and see if the instructor has lost confidence in teaching Yoga after having him as a client.”
All kidding aside, Smoltz has been impressed with the results McCann has realized with his offseason conditioning program. The All-Star catcher added strength to his upper body with a strict weightlifting program and now is attempting to improve his flexibility with Yoga.

Braves officials are a lying sack of s***….. After denying they had plans to move the AAA team, they announced today during their press conference they have been working on this move since October.
The people of Gwinnett are really going to be surprised when they discover that concessionaires and parking lot attendants as well as the ticket sellers are not exactly the kind of high paying jobs they seem to be touting when they say it will provide hundreds of new jobs in the county.
Yes…. I’m still mad and getting madder the more I think about it. Now that I find the Braves have been fooling around behind my back. They are exactly the same types I had to deal with as a Union rep. No problem lying to your face.

This could be interesting.

Bob, J moves to Richmond, Lew moves to Nashville and Gil moves to Vermont. That way, Gil cools, Bob, Journalist gets to be closer to Washington for the political season and Lew gets to paint the Nashville skyline and a portrait of Bob Dylan. In a few months, Lew can rejoin his wife in VT, Bob gets his hot tub back and Gil continues south to Atlanta. Then everyone can be happy and watch minor league Braves and major league Braves too!
Besides, Gil…it’s just a city that didn’t compete or invest in our ball club. Don’t hate on the Bravos. That settles it. Now we have whirled peas.

Evidently for the Braves, Richmond is a Discontinued Operation and Gil is a Non-Core Asset. Very sad. But I must say that I have always been jealous of Gil being able to go to minor league games and make evaluations on kids before the rest of us get to evaluate. Now, I will be able to see them down here. But the AAA team probably won’t mean anywhere near as much to me or Gwinnett County as it did to Richmond and folks like Gil. Politicians and faceless corporate ownership sucks.
Savannah Guy, Bob is not going to Vermont without his hot tub. Carolina Lady had to make Klobber put a hot tub in the back of the Knob Creek Saloon over here to accommodate Bob. He was tired of people pi$$ing in his tub over there.

Gill, I haven’t kept up with it today but from what I read last evening, it seemed last that the Braves were the ones at whom your ire should be directed.
I don’t know about this situation but it’s rare that I’ve seen a company’s new ownership came in and tell its employees and/or the public that drastic changes were going to be made … usually the exact opposite … but rarer still where that was true, especially where the change was predicated primarily upon tax advantages.
Hard to reach conclusions without knowing agendas but we do know that MLB isn’t concerned over the fact that Ted and TBS created/cultivated a national/international fan base … and now that fan base “is being/has been” disenfranchised.
As the night follows the day, the Cubs will be next … and all will be forgotten as fans will receive their Stetsons … the ability to watch their teams on the Internet, Cable, and Direct TV … at increased cost to the fan and an increased, more controllable revenue stream for MLB, the owners and the players.
Maybe not … just an old man talking trash … but were I in Danville, I would be concerned … in addition to Lawrenceville, there’s still Cartersville to consider.

Serious question … in what kind of oil should one cook fresh French fries?
I’ve used both vegetable and olive but just switched to corn oil and they are not crispy, an real understatement … they brown more quickly … no hint of oil taste but are totally limp.

Bob, J, try peanut oil. It’s what I use in the kitchen at Klobbers Knob Creek Saloon and Hot Tub Bar. It’s a monounsaturated fat with a high smoking point so it’s ideal for frites! In fact, I recycle the used oil to heat the new hot tub I apparently had to put in for you today! Enjoy!

Klobber, despite what the Braves say, they were complicit in this move. First of all, the Diamond is not all that bad. Old parker Field was pretty shabby but a new stadium was built in 1985. Now, I don’t know about you but honestly, is twenty years the life expectancy of a stadium now?
After the Diamond was built, stadiums were built all over the league. The problem being first is your stadium ages sooner.
The regional authority was prepared to make several million dollars in upgrades when someone came up with the bright idea of building a stadium downtown. Well, then the counties pulled out of the deal to up grade the Diamond. The Braves offered to build a stadium if the city gave them the land tax free and they could also develop the surrounding area. Sounds great but the developer turned out not to be who he said he was (padded his resume’) plus the area has a terrible drainage problem.
The Mayor proposed another site but you could not get there from here. So it was shot down, so the city determined the present location was best. The Braves were aware of the situation and gave every indication of being on board with the revised plan to redevelop the current location. We are talking about a 60 acre site which would include not only a new ballpark but likely a new arena, a new tennis facility and a track and field complex as well as shops and restaurants.
No, it would not have a view of the River but you would also not smell the sewage treatment plant either. Funny how no one mentions that. Anyway, the Braves did not say once they were looking for someplace else to move. The city thought they had time to do it right rather than put something up in a hurry. The Braves meanwhile shrink their fan base. If you ask me, they were bargaining in poor faith.
I don’t know about Georgia but if any county government in this area tried to do the deal Gwinnett did without voter input, they would be tossed out on their ear. So, where does that leave us? Braves lauded the fan base in Richmond for their support and then said… but this is business.
Well, they can kiss my grits as far as I am concerned. I may as well get use to rooting for the Nationals because either they or the Mets will be here soon. Might just be a AA franchise but everyone in baseball says that is where all the hot shots are playing now anyway.
It is going to be a nasty separation for me. Silly me, thinking being loyal to something was still possible, I might as well root for Exxon. Same difference.

True story…. My dad once had some storm damage to the roof of his house, in addition, a partition block wall lining his patio was blown over. He contacted his home owners insurance to report the damage and make a claim. The repairs were made and the paid for by his insurance company. When it came time for his policy to be renewed, he received a letter stating that the insurance company was sorry but they would not be able to renew his policy.
At first my dad was rather upset by all this but knowing he had to have coverage, he contacted another insurance company. As it turned out, he was able to take out a policy with improved coverage and actually saved money over what he was being charged previously.
The first thing my father did was write to the original company thanking them for canceling him because if they had not, he would still be paying their high rates and he would not have found another company which saved him quite a bit of money.
The first company fell all over themselves, saying they had made a mistake and they were sorry for any misunderstanding and tried to get his business back. My dad told them no thanks.
Well, perhaps there will be a silver lining in all this. In 42 years, the Braves have fielded very few winning ball clubs in Richmond, yet we still supported the team. I think it is funny how if a movie bombs, you don’t hear the movie company panning the public for not seeing a bad movie. They just send it to cable and move on. To berate a fan base for not supporting a bad product is stupid. We might be bush league but we’re not dumb.
Maybe our next parent club won’t treat us like the red headed step child and try to keep a good club on the field.

Gil, the Braves and those surrounding them have done some dumb things in the past few years. Bet you could get Braves games at night on WSB couldn’t you??? No chance of you getting WGST up there, I can’t get it 30 miles south of Atlanta! Bet you used to watch a lot of Braves games on TBS as well, didn’t ya??? No more of that silly business. Now they have told you and the other folks in your neck of the woods to stay fans as they move the AAA team away….Not smart if you ask me….
Now, to play Devil’s advocate….I can see where having the AAA team just north of Atlanta could be a real advantage to the club. Gee, it’s too bad we traded Joey Divine away, if he still had any options left he could be sent up and down 50 times in a season with ol’ Bobby in charge! 🙄
Seriously, it will be easier for the team to judge talent, and a guy could be on the AAA lineup card Tues. afternoon, and instead in the starting lineup at the Ted Tues. night!!!!

perhaps the bloggers have heard of the feared buford triangle. many ballplayers have been lost in this buford triangle. disappeared. dropped out of sight. mysterious. unexplainable. only one way in and out of buford and maybe the braves don’t know this. yet.
and now, gil. langerhans and company will be a most entertaining substitute. oh, the humanity! gil must remain a braves fan. remember tom glavine. and uh, chipper.

Gil, sounds like y’all got a raw deal indeed. Atlanta doesn’t deserve what fans are left, and there don’t seem to be many. Someone’s gotta pay for that new $45 million stadium, what shall we bet the “minor league experience” in Gwinnett will be an awful lot like the Major League one downtown? The prices will be similar; I make no doubt. The fans will probably be similar too, which means it should have stayed where it was.
Gotta run; catch y’all later. Maybe I won’t get lost in the Buford triangle at lunch (two Big Bufords for $3?).

it is believed that the atlanta braves obtained royce ring to obfuscate (1st use on blog) the condition known as cold ringfinger. in this case, when tom glavine is mentioned the braves can say, “no, not cold ringfinger. you must be talking about ring’s cold finger.”

A family emergency kept mother’s aide out this morning so I had it all to myself – and it takes a while to get a frail 83-yr-old going, bathed, dressed and fed.
