CHARLESTON, SC – On January 16, 1972, the Dallas Cowboys won Super Bowl VI. As both of my parents are from Dallas, were fans of that team, and we traveled there at least once a year to visit family it was essentially predetermined that I should like them too. I was just shy of my eighth birthday and that was the exact day that I fell in love for the first time.

At the time, the Cowboys were easy to like. They were clean, humble and wholesome and for the most part were a God-fearing lot. Not too many tabloid stories diminishing the reputation of “America’s Team”. There were so many likable, talented guys associated with that team: Landry, Ditka, Reeves, Schramm, Hayes, Howley, Lilly, Pugh, Renfro, the list goes on. They weren’t all saints I suppose, but reviewing the roster today it still amazes me how many good and great ball players were on that team. But there was one guy that truly intrigued me above anyone else: Roger Staubach.

Throughout my childhood, Roger Staubach was my hero. Heisman Trophy winner. Super Bowl MVP. Six time Pro Bowler. Five time All-Pro. Hall of Famer. A man who served his country for four years, including a one year tour in Viet Nam, when he could have asked for his release from his obligation due to his impending football career. What was not to like about Roger Staubach? Even today the very mention of his name excites me. He’s the one celebrity-athlete that I’m truly afraid to meet because I’m afraid that somehow, some way, I’ll be disappointed. Kind of like when I met Johnny Bench, but that is a story for another lead.

I think back about my friends and it seemed that they all had heroes too: Fran Tarkenton, Larry Bird, Pete Rose, Lynn Swann – you get the idea. Whenever we had a pickup game in the neighborhood I was always Roger Staubach and the kid across the street was always Terry Bradshaw. I beat him like a drum on a regular basis, at least that’s what I choose to remember!

The reason that I dredge up all this personal history is that I have a son who is barely older than I was when I found something to follow and love for the first time. My son Matt is ten and claims to be a Braves fan, yet I wonder and worry if it’s only because he sees my passion and wants to be like his old man.

I worry though because Matt doesn’t have a hero. He does seem to love sports. We regularly go up to the ball field near our home and do baseball drills. He’s a good baseball player with a very strong arm and an incredibly smooth stroke for a boy his age. I say this not to brag (although clearly I am) but because other parents and coaches have come up to me and reaffirmed these things. And this makes me proud!

But, as usual, I digress.

He really enjoys the basketball goal that he received for Christmas. Almost every day he makes us move the cars so he can shoot goals. He’ll even sit and watch a few innings of baseball on tv with me while I help explain the what’s and why’s of the game even though I know that the subtle nuances are above his young mind.

But he doesn’t have a hero. I know this because I have asked him before. And this bothers me.

Perhaps times have changed and the concept of “hero” is no longer relevant to our youth. Besides, who would he choose as his hero? Terrell Owens? Roger Clemens? Barry Bonds? Pacman Jones? Even the teenage stars that are manufactured and marketed towards kids his age seem to eventually implode. Jamie Lynn Spears, anyone? How about Britney or Lindsey Lohan? I don’t think so. There just don’t seem to be as many stars out there for our youth to look up to, at least not the ones that we want them to look up to.

On Friday night, the Charleston Riverdogs held their annual Hot Stove Banquet. The keynote speaker was none other than Mr. Jeffrey Baden Francoeur, Gold Glove winning right-fielder for the Atlanta Braves. I invited Matt to go with me tonight because I am hoping that he will become a fan of Jeff Francoeur; that he will look up to him and want to be like him.

Frenchy’s an immensely likable fellow. I had the chance to see him in Charleston (when he played for Rome), Myrtle Beach and spring training a year or two. We spoke on numerous occasions and I was always impressed with his humility. Just before his first trip through Charleston in 2003, I read an article that predicted he would have a Dale Murphy-type career. I asked if he’d seen that article yet and he quickly stopped signing whatever it was that I’d given him and looked me in the eye. He told me that he had not, in fact, seen that article. I could tell by his facial expression and his body language that he was truly touched by I had just said. That humility thoroughly impressed me.

Friday night was the big event. Ladies and gentlemen, you couldn’t ask for a nicer, more genuine human being than Frenchy. There were about 250 people in attendance and he must have signed his name 1500 times, always with a smile on his face. He stopped to talk to every single person that came to his table, shook their hand, smiled, looked them in the eye – all the things that our mothers’ taught us to do but somehow so many people forget. He graciously took dozens of pictures with young and old alike. I honestly believe that he was as happy to be there as we were happy that he was there.

I won’t bore you with details of what he talked about as I know that I won’t be able to do it justice. In short, he was a very good speaker, entertaining, articulate and funny. But, I would like to share one story told by Torre Tyson, manager of the Riverdogs. He explained that he called Rocket Wheeler and Randy Ingle, who managed him at Rome and Myrtle Beach. He told them that he had to have some “dirt” on Frenchy because he knew that he would be speaking about him. Both managers replied that they had no bad stories about him, which is unusual because both of them spent most of a season with him. After spending virtually every day for an entire season together you’d think that they’d have something to give up!

One aspect of his life that I was not at all aware of is his faith. Now, I’m not a particularly religious person but it was obvious even to me that he draws a lot of strength from his spirituality. On his batting gloves he writes “Joshua 1:9” as a reminder of his faith and from which to draw strength. By his account, it’s the one passage that he leans on in difficult times. [Editor’s Note: Joshua 1:9 says “Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage; be not affrighted, neither be thou dismayed: for Jehovah thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.:]

Aside from his obvious athletic abilities and accomplishments, Jeff Francoeur seems like a young man that we all should like. In spite of his budding stardom, he’s down-to-earth, personable and polite. He’s the man you would want your daughter to bring home. My hope is that Matt will remember this night forever and will choose Frenchy as his own personal hero, as I chose Roger Staubach as mine. And more than anything, I hope that his young heart is never broken by his hero.

Chris-I grew up in and around Philadelphia-we lived in what was then the boonies outside the city (not so anymore, it’s one huge Metropolis, now). Our next door neighbors were good people. They had known me since I was three years old. When I was twelve, the older sister married Ruben Amaro, who was then the Phillies’ shortstop. THAT was huge. A real ML ballplayer came regularly and stayed NEXT DOOR TO ME!!!!! Pretty heady stuff to have your own personal ML Ballplayer who got tickets for you and your friends just by asking (behind Home Plate, no less). Yes, knowing a ML ballplayer back then-even one who batted around .215 was phenomenal.

Well, it is now 45 years later and guess what? He is still a friend. I will go, see him in Clearwater (along with the Grinch and FBG) when I go down to Spring Training. Now, however, it is not about him being a ML ballplayer, though he is a coach, minor league manager, and has done just about everything except to manage the big team. It is because, well damn-He is a great person. One of the finest I’ve ever known. And his son, the Asst. GM of the Phillies is a great guy, too (though knowing his families like I do, it would have been shocking if it were otherwise).

I was lucky-I found my hero at a young age. My son, too. He was a Dale Murphy fan growing up. Hope your son can find a good role model somewhere in all the morass that is professional sports. Maybe Seth McClung could be that person. I’m glad your boy met him at a young age. He may never be a great ballplayer, but we both know he IS a great guy.

Chris: What a great story! Hey, your son Matt is a handsome lad and he shines up real good too. Gets his good looks from Mrs. Klobber? I agree with Gil when he says that you will be his real hero. When he’s old enough to really understand what the word means, thinks about how much love and time you devoted to him and how much you’ve involved him in your life, you’ll be at the very top of the hero list.

Klobber, don’t take my rambling here as a “correction” or a parsing rejoinder of any kind. Quite the contrary…I’m sure we feel the same way about the word hero. Mine is just a typical philosophical/social commentary that your post inspired. We all grew up casually using the term “hero” when we referred to sports figures and we still do it from time to time, out of habit I suppose. Somewhere along the line, I quit doing that. Not sure if it was the huge contrast between athletes and true heroes that I’d read about or met…or if it was more the way it made me feel when I found myself referring to someone as hero that was making millions of dollars a year playing a “safe” sport that would never help or “save” anyone. It became more than a youthful designation.

As we grow older and wiser, we realize that the word “hero” is most often misplaced when it’s applied to those that excel in sports or other areas of personal achievement. Maybe it’s just a hot button for me, but I’m a bit uncomfortable designating “hero” to an athlete simply for their accomplishments or even the fact that they are good people. Being good is great, but not enough to rise to hero status. I think of hero as someone who devotes, risks or sacrifices their own life for a worthy cause, to help save others.

It’s true that sports “heroes” (role-models per se) are hard to come by these days. The same can be said of actors, musicians and politicians. We’ve even seen astronauts, Presidents, religious and world leaders fall miserably short of admirable. So many have proven themselves not to be good role models, much less heroic individuals.

Is the hero’s fall from grace-like designation due to our finding out more about their imperfect lives with our constant personal gossip oriented media coverage? Is it because we’re older and the word “hero” has taken on more meaning? Is it because our society has denigrated in terms of values and behavior? Is it because religion has overshadowed spirituality and belief in one true God? I’m inclined to think it’s all of the above.

Seems the true heroes are the unsung ones that aren’t usually in the national headlines of our agenda-filled media. They are mostly unknown to us. They are the firefighter that gave their own life running into the towers to save people on 9/11. They are the policeman that busts down a door to get to a hostage, knowing the bad guys may shoot and kill them right there. They are the good Samaritans that we read about in our local paper, who have risked or given their lives attempting to rescue someone in trouble. They are the caregivers that give of themselves to the sick and needy.

They are the social workers and ministers that are trying to save a continent from AIDS while putting themselves in harms way in an unstable and dangerous Africa. They are the tireless physician and scientist that tirelessly dedicate their lives to finding cures and healing the sick. They are the selfless that give to the poor. They are the test pilots and astronauts that strap tons of fuel on their backs to push the edge of the envelope of engineering and space travel. They are the brave soldiers who put their lives on the line every day in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world. They don’t have a number on their back, but they are the heroes.

Most of all Klobber, the true unsung heroes are the parents like you, who hang out with their kids, who raise their daughters and sons to know love, to understand right from wrong, to realize the difference between a good role model, a talented sports star and a true hero.

On that note, an appropriate Simon and Garfunkel song occurs…and a Tina Turner song as well. I’ll go with this for now…

Jesus loves you more than you will know.

Great job klobber. I was thinking the exact same thing as well, Savannah, about his kid loooking like Frenchy.

It is a sad world where children can’t have heroes. As adults, we don’t let innocence be served for our kids. We have to tell them what a bum their President, favorite ballplayer, favorite musician, favorite actor is. And we have to give them all the gory details about why they are a bum.

This is dumb but I have been wondering where Eminem disappeared to over the last 5 years. He was all over the place and then, poof, he was gone. Never hear from Slim Shady anymore. Wasn’t sure what was going on with him but then his mother came out last week announcing a new book and she had to tell the whole world about how Eminem had become a sickly, depressed, obese recluse who never left the house except to take his daughter to school and to attend PTA meetings and to watch his daughter’s recitals. Evidently, according to his mother, he has been overcome with grief for the past 2 years because of becoming divorced once again from his crazy soulmate and because of the murder of his best friend.

Why did she have to tell that? To make a buck? He is not gonna get much pity from people because he was one mean SOB in his heyday but the man apparently just wants to enjoy some quiet time with his daughter.

Eminem should be no kid’s hero but he was at one time to many kids unfortunately. He’s not deperately running around in front of the cameras trying to publicize what a trainwreck he has become. WHy can’t people just let people be people and leave them alone?

We can’t have heroes anymore for children because we don’t let the heroes be heroes. But most of all we don’t let people be people and let them be.

The saddest part is that Eminem is barely famous anymore and his mother thinks she is now gonna make a buck off of his name? Hon, the gig is up. His career is kaput. We have all moved on. No one cares enough anymore ot buy his records, nevermind a boring book written by his witch of a mother. What is she gonna tell in a book that we haven’t all heard before about her and Em in all of his songs? Was there another way that he wanted to kill her that he failed to describe in one of his songs?

If it is any solace, Jesus wasn’t allowed to be a hero 2000 years ago either. Anytime I think society has become worse, I remember that the Bible was written thousands of years ago describing many of the same social ills that exist today. Sometimes, I think we try to make ourselves heroes by pretending we have had to endure more smut than has previously existed in the world. But then I read the Bible and remember we didn’t invent this and that we are not more heroic than people from thousands of years ago because society is not any worse off today than it was thousands of years ago. If I allow myself to think otherwise, I start to believe I am hero worshipping myself.

Savannah, I’d LOVE to get some more photos! Tomorrow is pretty well taken up, though: have to get Mother up and dressed by 7, at the Medical Mall by 8 for some ‘nuclear tests’ (??) which will take several hours I’m told. If we don’t get hung up there, I have an appt for myself at 1:45 and probably won’t be back from that until nearly 4 – then it’ll be time for me to cook supper. Get everybody fed, clean up, Mother put to bed – and it’ll probably be 8:30 tomorrow evening.

(Something is blocking food from her stomach. She can manage liquids and soup. Yesterday morning she had 1 soft scrambled egg. Two hours later it came back up. This morning she had 2 spoonfuls of soft oatmeal. It came up immediately. It’s been getting progressively worse over a period of time.)

a barbecue sandwich must be have pork falling from the bread (bun or texas toast). full, flavorful, and without slaw on the meat. and the sides . . . baked beans, brunswick stew, corn on the cob, macaroni and cheese, fries. sweet tea, and dessert – banana pudding. yes, barbecue must be messy and there can be no english peas.

William Wallace, good points on the history of man’s inhumanity to his own, starting with Cain and Abel. Jude the Obscure (one of my favorite old books) was an example…Jude was crushed when he found out his hero; a writer of passionate, heartfelt hymns was just banging out popular songs for the money. Such is the way of the world.

There’s always been smut for certain. Of course, 2000 years ago they didn’t have it drilled in 24/7 on dozens of “news” channels. I’m sure many in the media would find fault if Jesus Himself walked onto a news program. Hair too long, too short, robe not pressed, sandals out of style, too “direct”, too humble…whatever.

Outside of true heroes that sacrifice greatly…perhaps all other “heroes” are more an idea than a reality. Hero as romantic notion that we cast upon others yet so few can live up to. We want heroes to remind us of how great we can be.

Well, it’s slow, another song: Tina Turner…

    We Don’t Need Another Hero

    OUT OF THE RUINS
    OUT FROM THE WRECKAGE
CAN`T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE THIS TIME
    WE ARE THE CHILDREN
    THE LAST GENERATION
WE ARE THE ONES THEY LEFT BEHIND
AND I WONDER WHEN WE ARE EVER GONNA CHANGE
LIVING UNDER THE FEAR, TILL NOTHING ELSE REMAINS

    WE DON`T NEED ANOTHER HERO
WE DON`T NEED TO KNOW THE WAY HOME
ALL WE WANT IS LIFE BEYOND
    THUNDERDOME

    LOOKING FOR SOMETHING
    WE CAN RELY ON
THERE`S GOTTA BE SOMETHING BETTER OUT THERE
    LOVE AND COMPASSION
    THEIR DAY IS COMING

ALL ELSE ARE CASTLES BUILT IN THE AIR
AND I WONDER WHEN WE ARE EVER GONNA CHANGE
LIVING UNDER THE FEAR TILL NOTHING ELSE REMAINS

    ALL THE CHILDREN SAY
    WE DON`T NEED ANOTHER HERO
WE DON`T NEED TO KNOW THE WAY HOME
ALL WE WANT IS LIFE BEYOND
    THUNDERDOME

SO WHAT DO WE DO WITH OUR LIFES
    WE LEAVE ONLY A MARK
WILL OUR STORY SHINE LIKE A LIGHT
    OR END IN THE DARK
    GIVE IT ALL OR NOTHING

    WE DON`T NEED ANOTHER HERO
WE DON`T NEED TO KNOW THE WAY HOME
ALL WE WANT IS LIFE BEYOND

Journalist Jimmy Smith, agreed on peas, even though, throughout the world, we must give peas a chance…

But not with barbeque. Now, CL is right on the slaw. Many styles are good, but hickory smoked, chopped and seasoned pork with finely chopped, spicy red vinegar slaw on top of the meat is the finest ‘que sandwich ever tasted. Served with Brunswick Stew, fries and pickle.

Greetings denizens. Thank you all for the kind words. After the last few days, they are greatly appreciated.

Lew, you’re right about Seth being good hero material. He IS a terrific person and is great with the kids. After reading your post, I remembered that I had a dream with him and his brother recently. I sure hope Marcus is doing okay.

SG, unfortunately for him, everybody tells me how much Matt looks like me. Of course he’s not as gray or as round. Kind of funny, both kids look like me, not at all like my wife. I do apologize to them both for that fact, especially our daughter.

Regarding your 5.14 post, I certainly agree with your take on the word “hero”.

Is it because we’re older and the word “hero” has taken on more meaning?

I think perhaps, that the definition of that word does change for us as we mature. When I was a child, my heroes were athletes, as many of my friends, and I suspect many of the rest of us here would acknowledge. As I matured and came to understand the sacrifices made by policemen, firemen, soldiers, etc., sometimes even regular citizens who sacrificed their safety or perhaps even their lives for someone else, I found a higher, greater definition of the word.

jjs, I had no idea you were also a lumberjack!

    BARBER:
    I wanted to be… a lumberjack!

Leaping from tree to tree, as they float down the mighty rivers of British Columbia.
The Giant Redwood. The Larch. The Fir! The mighty Scots Pine!
The lofty flowering Cherry! The plucky little Apsen! The limping Roo tree of Nigeria. (Note: I thought it was Uganda)
The towering Wattle of Aldershot! The Maidenhead Weeping Water Plant!
The naughty Leicestershire Flashing Oak! The flatulent Elm of West Ruislip!
The Quercus Maximus Bamber Gascoigni! The Epigillus! The Barter Hughius Greenus!

With my best buddy by my side, we’d sing! Sing! Sing!

    [singing]
    I’m a lumberjack, and I’m okay.
I sleep all night and I work all day.

    MOUNTIES:
    He’s a lumberjack, and he’s okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

    BARBER:
I cut down trees. I eat my lunch.
    I go to the lavatory.
    On Wednesdays I go shoppin’
And have buttered scones for tea.

    MOUNTIES:
He cuts down trees. He eats his lunch.
    He goes to the lavatory.
    On Wednesdays he goes shopping
And has buttered scones for tea.

    He’s a lumberjack, and he’s okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

    BARBER:
I cut down trees. I skip and jump.
I like to press wild flowers.
    I put on women’s clothing
    And hang around in bars.

    MOUNTIES:
He cuts down trees. He skips and jumps.
He likes to press wild flowers.
    He puts on women’s clothing
    And hangs around in bars?!

    He’s a lumberjack, and he’s okay.
He sleeps all night and he works all day.

    BARBER:
I cut down trees. I wear high heels,
    Suspendies, and a bra.
    I wish I’d been a girlie,
    Just like my dear Papa.

Wonderful story, Chris! Glad you found it.

A friend sent an email a few minutes ago that contained a line I’ve read before but had forgotten:

A thought to ponder, huh? 🙂

Good evening, y’all! As usual it appears I’ve just missed CL. You may have guessed that I went to Georgia after all. We left Fri. afternoon ( on about an hour’s notice) to beat the nasty weather. The snow event was a bit of a bust in Rabun. A lot of it went south of us. It was, however, extremely cold. I went for a walk yesterday to see the bit of snow we did get & it was 31, which was the high for the day. Yow!

Glad to see my avatar appeared. Chris, great blog again! Time to check out these photos.

Klobber, nice article on Chipper and others. Nice to see the straight-up, clean guys with that kind of light on them and the deserved recognition of character, natural talent and grit.

I’d like to have seen his comments on Smoltz, Glavine and Jeter as well. That’s one article that ended too soon. That idea and story line would make a great book.

Maybe a borrowed title would be appropriate: “A League of Their Own”. Or perhaps, “Bucking the Trend and Playing by the Rules”.

She needs to thaw her fingers from her trip to Rabun and get in that kitchen. Baking is good therapy for frozen digits. Warm oven…rolling pin, kneading…I’m just concerned for her finger health, that’s all. Cookies pies and cakes will fix her right up.

Hillbilly, did you hear about the two duck hunters from Prince Albert?
Supposedly a true story heard on a Saskatoon radio station reporting the incident (sounds like an urban myth).

A guy buys a new Lincoln Navigator from Merlin Motors in Saskatoon for $42,500.00 (with monthly payments of $560.00). He and a friend go duck hunting at Tobin Lake in mid-October; and of course the lake is frozen.

These two guys go on a lake with their guns, a dog, and the new Navigator.

They decide they want to make a natural looking water area for the ducks, something for the decoys to float on. Now making a hole in the ice large enough to invite a passing duck is going to take a little more power than the average drill auger can produce. So, out of the back of the new Navigator comes a stick of dynamite with a short 40 second-fuse.

Now our two Rocket Scientists, afraid they might slip on the ice while trying to run away after lighting the fuse (and becoming toast, along with the Navigator), decide on the following course of action: they light the 40 second fuse; then, with a mighty thrust, they throw the stick of dynamite as far away as possible.

Remember a couple of paragraphs back when I mentioned the NAVIGATOR, the GUNS, and the DOG??? Let’s talk about the dog: A highly trained Black Lab used for retrieving…especially things thrown by the owner. You guessed it: the dog takes off across the ice at a high rate of speed and grabs the stick of dynamite, with the burning 40-second fuse, just as it hits the ice.

The two men swallow, blink, start waving their arms and, with veins in their necks swelling to resemble stalks of rhubarb, scream and holler at the dog to stop. The dog, now apparently cheered on by his master, keeps coming. One hunter panics, grabs the shotgun and shoots the dog!

The shotgun is loaded with #8 birdshot, hardly big enough to stop a Black Lab. The dog stops for a moment, slightly confused then continues on. Another shot, and this time the dog, still standing, becomes really confused and of course terrified, thinks these two geniuses have gone insane. The dog takes off to find cover, under the brand new Navigator.

The men continue to scream as they run. The red-hot exhaust pipe on the truck touches the dog’s rear end; he yelps, drops the dynamite under the truck and takes off after his master. Then, BOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!!

The truck is blown to bits and sinks to the bottom of the lake, leaving the two idiots standing there with, “I can’t believe this just happened” looks on their faces. The insurance company says that sinking a vehicle in a lake by illegal use of explosives is NOT COVERED by the policy. He still had yet to make the first of those $560.00 a month payments…

In case you are wondering. The dog is okay. Just a few bird shot pellets were plucked from his skin and no problem. Seems the guy was also a bad shot.

The lab now refers to him as “your and idiot”.

Cheesecake is one of the major food groups and does not raise blood sugar-not conducive to weight loss, but will not raise blood sugar. Good morning all, Awaiting a winter weather “event” today. Likely another dusting. Hillbilly, you are welcome to post anything you like I would think. CL is very open minded it appears as long as you are not hunting on her turf.

I am no longer a hunter myself but I do love to shoot and still have an affection for firearms, must be a guy thing. I may no longer partake in the sport myself but I still have wonderful memories of quail hunting with my dad.

A bit of wisdom imparted to me by my father during one of our hunts, he told me “son, a man is entitled to one good dog and one good woman during his lifetime, it is a fool who doesn’t recognize when he already has either one.”

SG great post on “real” heroes made me think about about those individuals who I look up to in my life. Surprisingly, few sports figures ever came to mind. Not that I didn’t root for certain players but I was always a big fan of the Lone Ranger. I guess my “heroes” were cowboys too. 🙂

I have been fortunate enough to know some real heros in my lifetime, however and they are people who never made the press, never sought publicity for their actions and likely never thought of themselves as such. The did however make a significant impact upon me personally as well as the families of the people involved.

I have learned there are no perfect people, all of us have some frailty as it is part of being a human being. It is why God blessed us all by giving us grace. The best we can do is not be as bad as we can but try to live a good life and be someone our children and grandchildren can be proud of. I will be the first to admit I have many shortcomings but it does not stop me from trying to be a better person. It is always the journey I have found to be most interesting, not the destination.

Now a poser…. Boston cream pie is really cake and cheesecake is really pie…. No wonder we Americans are so confused. If we can’t even name our desserts correctly, how can anyone expect us to pick the right person for political office?

How rednecks hunt: My friend’s family owns a large piece of property in Tennesee where they have a hunting camp set up. The whole family takes an extended trip there every Thanksgiving. (They even put pink camo on their baby girl.)

This past year her step-dad was offered a bunch of old porta-pottys by a friend. He decided to make deer stands out of them. So they all sat in camo-painted porta-pottys to hunt this fall. Sounds like a Jeff Foxworthy joke- “If you’ve ever hunted from a porta-potty, you might be a redneck”.

Klobber, I might have a few autographs around that Matt can have, but I’ll have to track them down. Hope they’re still around in boxes somewhere. Have Bill “Moose” Skowron (my dad was pals with him and bowled with him when we lived in Ft. Myers). I have Joe Pepitone, and a few other oldies. Back then I was a Yanks fan because we met them and saw them in spring training. Newer ones include the Lemmer, Mark Grace (heck’uva nice guy…met him at an airport in Houston), and a few others.

Don’t mention to him in case I can’t find them. Since I’m not an autograph seeker or collector he’s welcomed to them. Got Joe Theisman’s too. Had Joe Namath’s but I think I left it on the bar in Ft. Lauderdale after we both drank too many one night back in the 70’s. He was a nice guy…regular fella. I was a young college punk. Not sure why he hung out with me that evening…must’ve been a slow night with the ladies.

Oh, I also have one of Lauren Hutton too, from when she was in “Gator” being filmed in Savannah with Burt Reynolds. What a crush I had on that lady…

What a neat idea for old porta-pottys… Next thing you know they will be showing up as ice fishing houses…. It’s all about marketing. 🙂

SG… quite an impressive list of autographs you have. I remember Joe Pepiton from his days with the Richmond Vees when Richmond was the Yankees’ farm team. As much as I loved my dad, I just could never be a real Yankee fan because it was the team my older brother rooted for. I didn’t know at the time we could both root for the same team. It was always a competition between us….

be someone of whom your children and grandchildren can be proud … now that’s a pretty good idea!

Perhaps better than that … be someone of whom your mother, father, sisters and brothers can be proud … then you can start earlier in life and better enjoy the fruits of your labor!

    Or, so I’m told …

No famous autographs but it’s amazing who you unexpectedly run into or meet …

Met a lot of criminals at the Atlanta Pen … played catch with some famous inmates, or so I was told … to me, they were just trustees. Our best friends were the Overstreets … Ben was the assistant warden and they lived on the grounds … took me inside twice that I remember. He was later in charge of prisons under Eisenhower.

Met Johnny Mathis in an elevator in a King of Prussia Hilton … we had adjoining suites.

Talked to Totie Fields for hours, numerous times in the late ’60s … in a little all night cafe in Vegas.

Met Buddy Rich in the Chicago airport, later had supper with him … didn’t know who he was until after the fact.

Became friends with Sherwin Linton and Red Phillips in a bowling alley in Watertown, SD. Sherwin could do Cash better than John … still can, I imagine.

Ran into Earl Hollman at Disney Land … dressed casually in blue jeans … literally knocked him down … nice guy!

Ran into Julie London and knocked her down too … coming out of a Ladies Room at the Thunderbird in Vegas. She was nice too, but a friend of hers, Johnny Puleo, … the midget Harmonicat, attacked me … thinking I was trying to rob her.

Eddie Matthews was a near by neighbor when he played for the Crackers.

Met Paul Williams standing in line together at the bank …

Talked to Oscar Robertson for two hours … plane flight … remember talking about sousemeat, buttermilk, hotwater cornbread … fried corn, and boiled cabbage … they were poor but his mama was a good cook. We were alone in first class … just Oscar and Bob … didn’t make the connection until he was recognized by fans as we got off the plane.

Senator Sam Nun had the dorm room next door and Bobby Dews was down the hall as freshmen at Tech … don’t guess that counts.

I guess I inherited it … meeting folks like that

Ron McGuire, first cousin of the McGuire Sisters, and I were good friends at Fort Devens … wrote his love letters for him, took trips with his folks … told Mama about it. Later, she saw the McGuires in the lobby of the Astoria … told Phyllis that I was a friend of her brother … of which she had none. Her bodyguard, evidently thinking that mother had ill intent, had her physically removed.

Mama and Anne Jeffreys were good friends … during the late thirties, early forties … before her Hollywood fame.

During a trip to New York, Mama met Bette Davis in an elevator … introduced herself … the staff panicked when they couldn’t find Miss Davis … having tea with Mama in her suite.

I went to Bass HS in Little 5 Points but knew Bill Anderson slightly while he was at Avondale HS … during the 1980’s Daddy wanted to have some of his grandfather’s poetry put to music … I suggested he contact Whispering Bill whom I had known while in high school … he did but told him we went to school together at Bass. Bill was gracious in his refusal.

Had lunch with Dale Robertson while he was in Atlanta with a stage production of “110 in the Shade” … can’t remember the occasion but did get good tickets as a result … a singer he was not.

Came face to face with one of Roy’s white tigers once … well, actually the tiger’s tail hit me in the face.

Always on the outside looking in …

Tough being a star in sports without yielding to temptations.

After Frenchy spoke, there was a short Q & A session. Someone stood up and asked him how hard it was with so many temptations offered to him. We’ve all heard stories about players having a different girlfriend in every city. He admitted that it was very hard but because he has such strong faith, a wonderful wife, and good friends that he’s able to resist such temptations. I sure hope he’s able to continue to do the right thing.

By the way, his wife Catie, is much prettier in person than in any video or still pictures that I’ve ever seen of her.

Oh, by the way, I would like to thank CL for all her hard work in making this blog so successful. CL, I hope that your mother is doing okay.

I’d also like to thank the folks that I bumped out of line to get this posted. I don’t recall who was supposed to be next but my first blog lead was just posted two weeks prior to this one. Bob, J…. Great stories 🙂 I moved in a much different circle than you so I did not get to meet the same types of folks but two stand out. Jim Kirkum, a good old boy from Wilmington NC originally who could sell anything to anybody at anytime. 🙂 He reminded me that one should never give up hope no matter how hopeless a situation seems.

He was responsible for saving the life of a little five year old girl who was abducted, raped, stabbed and left to die by a serial sex offender. Jim refuse to give up hope of finding her even after the fire department and police department basically closed up shop. He made the decision to call in search and rescue teams from around the state and even after being up for nearly 24 hours straight, he coordinated a large scale ground search. The little girl was found barely alive by one of the search dogs.

The media gave lots of attention to the dog and the handler as being heroes. Truth is, the little girl just happened to be where the dog was searching. There were over one hundred people looking just as hard for her where she was not. Jim never received his due for his efforts but I never failed to remind him that he alone was more responsible than anyone else for that little girl being found alive.

As a result both the Fire Department and the Police Department in Chesterfield County completely revamped their search and rescue procedures and protocols because they knew they had dropped the ball.
I was very proud to have known Jim and miss him terribly sometimes as he was a good and true friend. He passed about of 5 years ago at the young age of 52 from pancreatic cancer.

Jim was one of those heroes that SG was talking about. Truth is, I have been honored to know so many folks just like Jim. I feel very humbled to have made their acquaintance and hope I have had a positive influence on them as well.

A good and dear friend gave me a saying from Confucius that became my credo for many years. It is “I can count the number of seeds in an apple but I cannot count the number of apples in a seed.”

The second person was a fellow by the name of Jesse Helton. Jesse was originally from Galax, Virginia. He came to Richmond to go to work for Allied Chemical but more to get out of the coal mines of southwest Virginia. Jesse had a knack to make you feel good no matter how dire a situation and was absolutely the best driver I ever had. He was a bit of an amateur magician and was a magnet for every kid in the neighborhood and one could easily confuse him as the pied piper.

Jesse was always willing to help, no matter what the task he was there to help. Jesse introduced me to Jerry Clower as Jesse’s brother owned a small grocery store in Jerry’s home town.

If ever there was a fellow I wish you all could meet it was Jesse. Always a smile and a wonderful spirit. You could not but feel uplifted just being around him. Although he had the same affect on women too he was always true to his wife.

Neither of the two fellows I mentioned are famous but they are no less important.

Chris … lest I forget … most impressive!

My initial reaction to Jeff was that he had good instincts but was probably more sizzle than steak … looked more lucky than good in 2005 and came on like “I gotta be me” stubborn during his struggles in 2006 … but he kept working at it and seems to be real … hard to do when everyone is telling you how wonderful you are.

From what you report, he sounds even more solid than I had imagined … I remember having read/heard somewhere that he was genuinely surprised and somewhat hurt when he and his friends were booed while being recognized at some sporting event in 2006 … perhaps it’s just my weirdness and dislike of “business sportsmen” but to me, that too was a refreshing reaction.

Gil your 11:17 was wonderful … you have marvelous insight … it takes same to recognize and appreciate “the little girl just happened to be where the dog was searching” … a bit the same as I felt about war heroes.

Those were mostly just chance meetings that I noted but it’s true about the circles in which I traveled … yours seems to have been more of a straight line, while round and round and round I went … Mama said it’s why I never got anywhere.

SirGuy, the difference is that I never met Ron’s girl … but, she liked my foolishness methinks … Esmeralda she was and Ron was her Quasimodo … or so I wrote.

I’ll have you know that Miss London, or Mrs. Troup if you prefer, was coming out of the Ladies Room as I was coming out of the Men’s.

Back in the early ’60s, when I was at the old Nazi Air Force Academy in Herzogenaurach, I frequented the Milch Bar … an establishment for locals, or so I thought … spending countless moons singing German songs and meeting folks … talking about the war, drinking good beer and eating many a bratwurst.

The first time there, duty called and I asked where the men’s restroom was … “Bitte, können Sie mir sagen, wo die Toilette ist?” My understanding of the Bavarian dialect being spoken wasn’t that good but they clearly answered that it was “over there to the right … through the double doors, on the left”.

And so I went … “da drüben, nach rechts” over there where they had pointed … to the right … and there it was, with MEN clearly marked on the door … and here I had thought I was the only American in the place.

The joke was on me but I had a good time and went back many, many times. The next time there, I again went to the Men’s restroom … this time greatly embarrassed when a young lady came in … “Excuse me!” in my best English as she screamed and fled the room. I felt all eyes were on me when I opened the door and returned to the table …
… but, having again looked carefully at the restroom door, it clearly said MEN … and then I noticed that the sign was old and two letters had fallen off, though you could still see the outline
    DA.

I was the only American in the place … but the joke was still on me … seeing the “MEN” on the door, I had forgotten to continue down the hall and through the double doors … the Herren was outside!

Oops and apologies for the long bold in the 6:36 … only the initial “MEN” and the “DA” were so intended … wrote that much earlier and when it didn’t post, I copied it to a word file … which evidently got corrupted when I transferred it back.

Good morning all, One of these days I am going to find a magic potion that will allow for me to sleep loner than 5 hours.. 😦

I posted the blog e-mail address on the (Other) blog. Boss Lady is trying to figure out where everyone has vanished to. Particularly Carolina Lady and Bob.

I did not have the heart to tell her that Paladin is really McFann.

Chris, my wife read your wonderful lead post and it made her cry. Again great job.

Bob, You don’t have to be in Germany to make that mistake. 🙂 I have inadvertently entered the wrong restroom and the first thing that strikes me is “where are the urinals?” Lucky for me I was not struck by a hand bag first… 🙂

I hope you were able to get your new computer up and running properly. I am still holding out. I keep thinking that I would rather have a new large screen HDTV but I find it difficult to justify as long as the old one works. My eyesight is not what it once was anyway so I am not sure I will see that much difference anyway.

Richmond lost another sports venue to Chesterfield County yesterday but the Richmond City council appears to be plodding along. They have so many other problems that I believe they just don’t want to fund it. The local swim club is building a facility along with the Richmond Kickers (the local soccer club) near the Chesterfield Courthouse. Soccer is a really popular sport here in the Richmond area.

I doubt the city will ever replace the Diamond. It is not on the Mayor’s high priority list. Ii would love to see the region build a new facility where Henrico County had proposed to build the NASCAR museum. I know the Nationals want to place a team here but it is useless to speculate at this point.

I am fairly certain it will be a AA team but nothing is a given. Opening day for Richmond is April 3rd and I plan to be there. One last fling I suppose. I doubt there will be a crowd.

Even though I am disappointed with the Braves moving, I can certainly understand them doing so. If it were me, I would have moved too. It was just too good an offer to pass up.

Meanwhile, Klobber is busy working the phones to make sure that all who want pie will have pie. That’s just the way we are. Customer satisfaction is our only goal.

I think it has to do with blackberry phones or farms or something such as that. Must forget about pie for a while. It’s not healthy to obsess over dessert.

Some people can do anything, and nothing happens to them. Jack Nicholson has long since been rumored to snort coke once in awhile well into old age. Keith Richards is somehow 60+ Yet, someone like Heath Ledger is dead at 28.
I hear some call pot a gateway drug, don’t know how true that is, not all pot smokers turn into crack heads for sure.

Now, now … be nice! Shaun Payne means well … and besides, methinks intelligence is highly overrated. I used to study for Actuarial Exams with Wesley Moore, a school chum with whom I went to high school, Tech and Georgia State.

Wes was a straight A student in High School, at Tech and Georgia State … though I always bested him in mathematics, actuarial science, bowling and of course at Liar’s Poker …. once winning 20 of 21 from him.

His mother was a college dean … English professor. We studied in their basement so naturally, we were invited when she hosted parties for her students … none of whom were very intelligent by our standards … or so we mused.

I remember Shaun, … ugly, awkward, poorly dressed, two left feet, dense and tongue tied … making a complete fool of himself. Strange but he was the life of the party with all the pretty girls listening to his every word … laughing at his stupid, unfunny humor … standing in line to dance with him.

Yes, Bergian but Amsterdam is a “happy” place. 🙂

I will not get into the fray about drugs, I do know the dark side of it from many years of responding to huffers and the like. Most tragic was a 15 year old who went into cardiac arrest from smoking oregano that had been soaked in formaldehyde. Never once had a problem with anyone smoking MJ. Coke on the other hand was a different story.

It all comes down to being responsible in your actions. I will likely overdose on peanuts.. 🙂

SG… Thanks for the great pie site(s). I shall make it a point to personally visit one of Mom’s pie shops. I will let you know how they turn out.

Berigan-Sounds more like you dated a girl with some other issues. Doesn’t sound like smoking reefer was her problem. Talking fast and repeating stories? Doesn’t sound like pothead behavior to me. Now if she was talking like Sean Penn in Fast Times, Dude………

You’re falling into what are and have been traditional stereotypes. Have you ever seen Reefer Madness- Either the original or the recent musical? Gateway drug? Not really. Actually, if you could get your smoke at the local convenience store instead of having to go see someone connected with a drug running cartel, you wouldn’t be exposed to anything else. However, I guess you could consider alcohol a gateway drug, for that matter. Everyone who I know who did any drugs started with Bud.

BTW, Dude-I’ve smoked for almost forty years, but take nothing else that is not prescribed by my Doctors and have not had a drink in twenty years. Made it through a Master’s Degree, too. Go Figure.

Like I said-you’ve been listening to stereotypes. Not everyone who smokes is lazy or incapable of working effectively and without mistake. Not everyone is like Sean Penn in that inane movie. Most people could completely fool you as to whether or not they had smoked within minutes, weeks, or ever. We are not all going to remain fourteen forever, nor will we act like it. Nor do we all sit motionless contemplating our navels (haven’t been able to see mine for some time now, anyway), nor do we sit around contemplating sub atomic worlds existing in dust motes. Wow. Have a cousin from NC coming for dinner so I’ll sign off. Too bad the Coastal and Nashville Consortium of Dessert Delivery couldn’t come through on the pies. Klobber made many calls but for some reason couldn’t connect FBG with our courier.

Such is life in this just in time, cut throat competitive world of the pie delivery business. UPS has to answer for their missed delivery and treacherous behavior, absconding with the goods like that. Hopefully Journalist Jimmy Smith is over at Scribes home helping Scribe clear the kitchen and wash all the pie plates.

Also regret that we couldn’t get the cheesecake to Lew. He probably has munchies right now.

As damning as the evidence is against UPS, we will not assume their guilt before proper investigations have been completed. We will need testimony from flbravesgirl before going forward on this case. Mr. Fly, sleuth reporter may need to be brought in if we can’t crack the case.

Even though Klobber, Bob, Journalist and I cannot assume any responsibility for pie deliveries since UPS was given the job, we still want to make one of FBG’s customers happy. Therefore, before departing, I have a little consolation prize for Journalist Jimmy Smith to commemorate his favorite holiday. Thought you might like. Berigan-If that’s where you’re getting your information, you’re being misinformed. On the facts section, the first thing they had printed was wrong. No one smokes stems or seeds. There is no THC in them so why bother and give yourself a sore throat? I also have never heard a marijuana cigarette referred (or is that reefered to?) as a nail. Never.

AS for the cancer, they just published a study a year or so ago-(heard it on CNN Health news while I was in Boston to see the Braves last year) that claims that THC kills the cancer cells. There has been absolutely no correlation between smoking pot and cancer like there has been with cigarettes. Smoking may not be great for you, but you won’t rot your lungs out.

As for the memory thing-There was a thirteen year long study done utilizing over 100,000 subjects. The findings were that marijuana smoking did nothing whatsoever to destroy or even to effect memory. Alcohol totally destroyed it, but pot had no effect. Not quite what you’re used to hearing, is it?

Look-If you have no desire to smoke any pot, that’s perfectly fine with me. I do not advocate it’s use for anyone who does not desire it. I have no problem with it at all. I don’t care if you drink or eat fast food, either. I certainly do not advocate the use of crack, meth, cocaine or heroin for anyone. All I want is for people to realize that pot has been wrongly villified for decades-for no good reason. I have known many hundreds of people who smoked for short or long periods of time. Many of they were And Idiot, just like many who drink or many who are high on life and many who are high on God. There were also many who were highly educated, quite responsible and good loving, caring family persons, instituted in high paying, responsible positions in many fields of endeavor. It has caused them no problems, nor has 40 years of use turned me into a moronic raving idiot, incapable of writing a coherent and cogent sentence or robbing me of the ability to function in any way shape or form.

Now stop and look at it like this. It was estimated sometime back that over 1 million pot smokers lived in California alone. Consider the legalization and taxation, thereof. No pot smoker would oblject, for xample, to paying $20 for a pack of joints (like a pack of cigs). Say $10 of that goes to taxes. If everyone in California who smoked bought one pack, that would be $10million in tax revenue. That’s $10 mil from the sale of one pack to every smoker in one state. I guarantee that would cover the first day or two. Can you imagine the amount of revenue that could be collected? Therein lies the solution to the Social Security crisis, the budget shortfalls, the money needed for universal health care, etc., and you didn’t have to raise taxes on anyone who didn’t partake.

Esteemed Ugandan Journalist: I did have plenty of pie, but it didn’t last long enough for you to have made the trip to the southern rim of the capital city. Yeah, that’s my story and I’m a-stickin’ to it.

Now, transition (noted transition): Smokeables? Interesting. Never got into that. Always seemed to enjoy the things that came in cold 12-ounce cans. Still do … just now, those cans have Coke Zero on the side of them, not Miller Lite. I do enjoy a good cigar while frying fish on the back patio, though. And I’ll have a covered patio soon … oh the humanity!

Now, blogging (more transition): The Scribe hasn’t been on here much lately, thanks to work and snow and family. I’ve also been working on trying to find someplace where I can have my own blog, and today, I’ve reached an agreement with a Web group to start my own blog.

So, if you’re bored and want to read what’s on my mind, head on over to Big League Blog. It’s at http://www.bigleagueblog.net. The esteemed CL has been kind enough to place it in the blogroll; I’ve returned the favor over there.

For now, it’s going to be a site talking about all pro sports, and there will be other authors posting there, too, from time to time. Eventually, though, I believe it’s going to lead toward an all-baseball blog. Post No. 1 recalls covering the Patriots in the Super Bowl three years ago in Jacksonville, and how their run the past seven seasons makes them one of the greatest American sports teams ever. May write something about the NHL All-Star game being here this weekend, but we’ll crank out the baseball talk there soon enough.

OK, enough self-promotion. Check it out if you wish. If not, you’re still my friend.

Gotta run … there is a knock on the door, and I hear flippers slapping against the window. Quick, hide the pie!

    The Scribe abides.

you just can’t judge people by their harmless vices or recreations I’m not sure we can’t, but I try very hard not to so do … the problem is, that I don’t know enough to determine which of a person’s vices and recreations are harmless and which are not … and my guess is that most of them don’t either.

Perhaps that’s best left to the enlightened few …

    http://www.nida.nih.gov/Infofacts/marijuana.html

There are many layers of the onion but methinks it’s best to work within the system unless it’s totally corrupt … imposing fines and insignificant confinement supports the notion that you can pick and choose which laws you obey … that it’s okay to do the crime if you’re willing to pay the fine and/or do the time … I can only speak for myself but can you imagine Chris so teaching his son? … methinks not.

Since most folks cheat, our heroes should be those who do it best … something is wrong with that picture.

I do these things … and I see nothing wrong with doing them … and methinks so doing does no real harm … so those who do them are doing nothing wrong … the emperor may have been enlightened but he still wasn’t wearing any clothes.

And like Bob is saying….I know some musicians think it helped “expand” their minds and all that. It also came at a price, less music recorded for sure, and lots of them permantly fried their brains, like that founder of Pink Floyd.
And Pot can really do damage to peoples brains. One of my Dad’s best friends(An old man like my Dad who still became a hippie in the 60’s) smoked a lot of pot back in the day. Wife did the same. My Dad(Who didn’t smoke) would remind her about, this that and the other story, event back then….she didn’t remember any of it! And she was not stoned 24/7. Doesn’t have alzheimer’s as far as I know. Who knows how much drugs affected my Dad’s friends mind…something caused him to go off the deep end in the 70’s. He died homeless about 25 years ago.
As for a harmless vice, just like drinking too much, it does impair you. There was that railroad accident several years back when the guy was stoned out of his mind.
Reminds me of my best friend from St. Louis talking to me after he joined the navy and started smoking pot. He said one time he was driving, and wasn’t sure which lights were green, and which were red! Harmless, I don’t think so…..Not heroin though.
There, that’s settled! 🙂 Now, we can get back to talking about things we can all agree on. Like the fact the Devil Rays will win the AL East with Willie Aybar leading the way! 😉

Fact: People have been smoking herb since people were on earth. Ancient cultures and American Indians smoked it for spiritual purposes. They also ate mushrooms, mescaline, belladonna and peyote for the same reasons. The peace pipe was just that. Now…

Fact: It was a brave man who first eat an oyster.

Opinion: Actually, it may have been a stoned Indian with the munchies.

Opinion: Kurt Cobain, tragic soul as he was, really was a musical genius and Nirvana was a milestone of modern rock. Same as was Jim Morrison and the Doors. And Hendrix.

Then there’s Merle, who partook yet pined for the good old days:

Are the Good Times Really Over for Good

I wish a buck was still silver.
It was back when the country was strong.
Back before Elvis; before the Vietnam war came along.
    Before The Beatles and “Yesterday”,
When a man could still work, and still would.
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
Are the good times really over for good?

Are we rolling down hill like a snowball headed for hell?
With no kind of chance for the Flag or the Liberty bell.
Wish a Ford and a Chevy,
Could still last ten years, like they should.
Is the best of the free life behind us now?
Are the good times really over for good?

I wish coke was still cola,
And a joint was a bad place to be.
And it was back before Nixon lied to us all on TV.
    Before microwave ovens,
When a girl could still cook and still would.

Stop rolling down hill like a snowball headed for hell.
Stand up for the Flag and let’s all ring the Liberty bell.
    Let’s make a Ford and a Chevy,
Still last ten years, like they should.
The best of the free life is still yet to come,

weren’t we told that the smoking of cigarettes was good for us for many years? … you gotta be careful which experts it is to whom you listen … when buying a used car, methinks it’s best to first take it to a mechanic to have it checked out and then to a competing dealer to see what he will give you for it.

Maybe the smoking of cigarettes was good for us for many years … but those you can buy now aren’t … and they cost too much. The real problem was that they never said what they meant by “for many years” … whatever they meant, I’m sure it was shorter than the 50+ years I been so doing.

Many Law suits have been won against tobacco companies for having enticed folks to smoke … however, one lady won a suit against somebody several years back for their convincing her husband to quit … though it may have later been reversed. They held that his quitting caused a distinct change in his system, triggering whatever caused his death.

How many golfers do you know that have a good idea as to what their swing really looks like? I may have played a little better after a few beers … a lot better than after a bunch.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if instead of giving us their posits and opines, folks would give us the thought processes through which they went to arrive at same.

Bob-No, the point was I was trying to explain to Berigan what Bill Maher meant when he commented on heroin usuage among musicians. If you will check all of my posts, I steadfastly said that I did not condone or recommend heroin usage by anyone.

Don’t know what DUI’s or drunk driving have to do with anything we discussed. I’ve never gotten a DUI, have never been charged with a crime, much less convicted of anything. I do not do heroin or any hard drugs, though have tried cocaine in the days of my wayward youth. I’ve never used intravenous drugs of any sort, have never done meth (though I will admit to using greenies to study for finals, also in days of wayward youth), have never smoked crack and have not had an alcoholic beverage in twenty years. I do not drive at night any longer for any reason, as I have had numerous eye operations and do not see well in the dark with approaching headlights. I rarely even drive for much distance during the day-I stay at home and produce artwork-much of which, these days, I give away.

I do, however, smoke pot and am not a raving maniac (at least most of the time), am not a menace to society, am certainly not a forgetful, moronic drooling idiot and have been know, upon occasion, to be a pretty nice guy, who is concerned for his friends and attempts to do well by them and his family.

Oh. And the unable to distinguish red lights from green lights is called color blindness. It has nothing whatsoever to do with smoking pot. I can probably distinguish 100-200 different shades of each color. Besides-the red light is on top. The yellow is in the middle. That should tell you where green is.

Are you saying if you smoked a few joints(or nails as the youngsters say today! 😉 ) you would not be impaired enough to be a dangerous driver??? Don’t pot smokers, talk and think more slowly while high??? Or has it been everyone I have ever known was just pretending to be that way while high??? It seems to me not to be that far a stretch that my friend’s brain was not processing the data properly at the time, and couldn’t tell in time whether a light was green or red, no matter what shade they were….

I know that I’m behind the times and this is old news but I just read that ESPN Radio host Dana Jacobson has evidently been suspended for using the “F” word in relation to Notre Dame and Jesus.

From what I’ve read there seems to be very little negative reaction to the fact that she was reported to be sloppy drunk as well … dropping the F-bomb three times, she reportedly slandered Notre Dame, the icon painted behind their goal posts dubbed “Touchdown Jesus” and finally Jesus himself.

Hard to imagine the values of folks that so behave and/or condone or accept such behavior under any circumstances, drunk or sober.

Jacobson reportedly said “F*** Notre Dame,” “F*** Touchdown Jesus,” and “F*** Jesus”.

“I am very sorry. My remarks about Notre Dame were foolish and insensitive. I respect all religions and did not mean anything derogatory by my poorly chosen words. I also deeply regret the embarrassment I have caused ESPN and Mike and Mike.

My actions at the roast were inappropriate and in no way represent who I really am. I have personally apologized to many of the people involved. I won’t make excuses for my behavior but do hope that I can be forgiven for such a poor lack of judgment.”

It’s very interesting to read the evolvement of the ESPN/ABC position as public reaction has been received … what appears to have started out as a slap on the wrist has rather quickly escalated.

We learned in fourth grade economics that while grocers could raise the price of a loaf of bread a penny every other week, they couldn’t raise it a quarter once a year … patience it what it takes to implement such agendas.

She said “My actions in no way represent who I really am” … well, if they don’t represent her, who do they represent?

“I respect all religions” … now I don’t know what that means … not really sure how you respect a religion, but she certainly wasn’t showing respect for the feelings of those who are Christians.

“I did not mean anything derogatory by my poorly chosen words” … if she wasn’t intending to be derogatory … then I would hate to see what she would have said it she had been so intending.

“… do hope that I can be forgiven for such a poor lack of judgment” … better that she be concerned with more than a lack of judgment, methinks … I wonder if she would so feel if her remarks had been well received.

I suppose a lack of good judgment is poor judgment and a lack of poor judgment is good … but what is a “poor” lack of judgment?

Ending as I began … “My actions in no way represent who I really am” … perhaps she should reexamine who she really is … an anchor? No, this onion has more layers than that.

Methinks perhaps she was trying to be funny … if she wants to be funny, she should take lessons from Jimmy Smith.

And perhaps we too should so do … take lessons from Jimmy … and reexamine who we really are and what it is for which we stand … we do need heroes and heroines but Dana Jacobsons ain’t one of them … her one redeeming quality may be that she makes the Roger Staubachs, Jeff Francoeurs, Chris Klobukowshis and Carolina Ladys all the more special!!

It’s interesting how we’ve progressed … a few years back, The Greek was fired, basically on the spot, for opining that black slave descendant athletes had a competitive advantage over the whites because of the breeding practices of slave owners.

Lew, I may directionally support what I understand Bill Maher purports to politically believe … but my impression is that he probably has an ambidextrous tongue … and while he can play an audience, a little Maher goes a long way for me.

However, my comments weren’t meant to suggest that you either condone or recommend heroin usage by anyone … my goodness, while I haven’t read your discussion on heroin usage, I would be shocked if you had.

I’m confident that DUI’s and/or drunk driving had nothing to do with you discussed and I’m truly sorry that my comment was confusing … it also had absolutely nothing to do with DUIs or drunk driving … could have been most anything … not sure why I chose that … was directionally just asking if the point was that the answer you would get “might be somewhat self serving or a matter of biased perception” by those being “questioned” … sort of a begging of the question if you will.

Again apologies … Mama always said she didn’t think I was much good at explaining that which I didn’t understand … but couldn’t be quite sure ’cause she never really understood my explanations.

Lew, show and tells are totally unnecessary … we are what we are … I like to think that I choose my friends carefully … that is, I’ll take any I can find … they’re a rather rare commodity and you’re one of them … one I truly cherish!

Maybe I shouldn’t, but I too will admit that in the days of my wayward youth I had folks bring me drugs … Tylenol 3 from Canada where it was sold over the counter and dirt cheap … of course, I could also get Aspirin with Codeine from our Medical Director for free but my stomach and aspirin never liked each other.

I’m now contemplating going into Kentucky to buy cigarettes … the taxation in Tennessee is totally unjustifiable … but, they have spies at the “near border” exits in KY … with TN tags being radioed back to officers at the TN line … evidently agin TN law to bring more than 2 cartons of cigarettes into the State as it deprives TN of tax revenue.

Now that you mention it, I believe I do remember hearing that on occasion you’re a pretty nice guy who is concerned for his friends and attempts to do well by them … not a bad recommendation.

Berigan, I think ’twas Jersey Gil what first asked that same question … can’t remember just now how I answered … but, it’s possible that I sometimes post while I’m sleeping … at least there are some posts that I don’t recognize, understand or remember when I read them.

Regarding the bolded type, I figure that’s a sign of superior intelligence … our minds work so fast that our fingers have trouble keeping up. I have the added excuse of being selectively blind or cursed … and see only that which I want or expect to see … makes editing difficult … methinks it’s inherited … maybe we’re related. Carol says you’re one of the good guys so that works for me!

She agrees with Lew that I’m very old … and cranky … and my fingers, like a lot of folks, have trouble understanding what my brain is trying to communicate … they get into fights and aren’t always on the best of speaking terms.

My keyboard’s shift key is most likely the culprit … it sometimes fails to respond … especially for the lower symbol keys … that and I can’t type.

Good morning all, I had written several responses to last night’s discussions and deleted each one prior to pressing the send key. Maybe I am getting smarter in my old age. 🙂 Let’s just say, we all have our vices and knowing when to say when is a learned experience.

Bob, sorry to hear you are still saddled with the curse of Phillip Morris. When I quit, I calculated how much I saved each month and then went out and bought a used Buick Park Avenue. The cost were the same. Believe it or not, the car is still in the family as my youngest son recently gave it to his sister-in-law as she needed a large car for her family. 250,000 miles and still going pretty strong. I quit smoking 12 years ago. Anyway, it was not easy but the wife just could not handle the second hand smoke and I was just tired of the hassle.

One thing I did continue to do however, was to take regular smoke breaks just like the other guys at work. No use being penalized for being a non-smoker. I just didn’t smoke, I never gave up being lazy… 🙂

We all have our vices, we all have our opinions, I doubt we shall change either here on the blog. It has always come down to personal choice. As long as other folks cannot get in my face and force their opinion on me, I can deal with it. We can all just share experiences and knowledge.

Good luck to Sscibe and his new blog. We have many who have talent sitting at the Carolina Lady’s table.

Only 3 more weeks until real business at hand can be undertaken. Come on baseball…. 🙂

“Kotsay can hit high in the lineup or down at the bottom. No problem. Just glad to be here playing for Bobby Cox. Here’s a guy who knows what it takes to be successful at the plate.”

“He told me recently that if Cox hits him 1 or 2, the focus is to get on base. If Bobby has him hitting 7 or 8, the goal is to drive in runs.”

“The bullpen looks pretty settled heading the camp. Rafael Soriano, Peter Moylan and Tyler Yates get the ball late. Wren went out and got three lefthanders: Royce Ring, Will Ohman and Jeff Ridgway. Look for two to stick with the big league club leaving spring training.”

“Jeff Bennett is this year’s long-relief guy. Manny Acosta, Jair Jurrjens and Blaine Boyer battle it out for a spot. And Mike Gonzalez is hoping to be back in the summer to provide a big boost down the stretch.”

Chop Seal: You be correct about Ring. Picked up at the trading deadline from San Diego for Wil Ledezma and former UGA standout Will Startup.

Braves will carry two lefties in the pen. If Ring can throw strikes in spring training, it’ll be him and Ohman. Ridgway has two options left, methinks. Ohman is a lock for the pen, along with a second lefty, Soriano, Moylan, Yates and, I believe, Acosta.

Jurrjens could be the fifth starter, especially if Hampton can’t pitch (and you really can’t count on Mike until he shows he’s healthy). Bennett will pitch some in Atlanta this year, perhaps as a spot starter. Gonna be interesting to see how the bully shakes out, indeed.

Berigan-As for driving capabilities-I have received three tickets in my life-one speeding over 35 years ago in Jefferson, Ga. I was And Idiot and smoking had nothing to do with it. I also had two tickets for not coming to a complete stop before making a right turn and both times I felt it was a debatable proposition. My driving problems now revolve around night blindness (cataracts-not pot) and the fact that until recently, I could not feel my feet due to diabetic neuropathy asnd I hit the brakes rather hard. The neuropathy has reversed and I now won’t put you through the windshield when I stop. That’s the sum total of almost 40 years of driving. Menace to society? No.

I really don’t care if any of you ever smoke anything-though Bob may want to quit the cigarettes-I did. I just hate that all of y’all are as misinformed as you are. To base anything on information that is laughable is never an intelligent move.

Anyway, the only reason I even brought it up is that there s an initiative in Vermont to decriminalize the possession, thereof. The cops are quite honestly tired of and no longer able to devote the time to pot busts, when there are so many other serious aspects of their jobs that need time devoted to them. I have said what I have to say.

Oh, and Falcon fans need not worry. It appears that Dan Snyder is about to blow up his team again.

Sigh, just when the players on the Redskins were learning Williams defense and Saunder’s offense, he brings in a whole new coaching staff.

Sorry folks but I can fall out of love with a team real fast because the owner “is and idiot”. I tolerated Snyder this year because of Joe Gibbs, looks like the Redskins will be back to musical coaches again soon.

Now baseball…. Looks like there will be some trades forthcoming with the Braves this spring. Too many good players for whom there is no room. The Braves know they won’t clear waivers. Bryan Pena, Blaine Boyer, Scot Thorman all fit into this category I think.

Berigan, debate all you want with the artist on the pros and cons of weed, but whatever you do…don’t dare smoke doobies or cigarettes. Don’t drink flaming Sambuka either. Could catch the hair on fire.

There was a ghost in the machine last night. Apologies for the multiple posts, especially when one would have been quite insufficient. Word Press has taken on a life of it’s own…like Hal in 2001-Space Odyssey. The machine can choose to ignore a post or repeat it three times. Is the machine on drugs?

Tried logging on several times to no avail. Odd, the more attention given to the machine, the more the machine seemed to ignore. Was the machine turned-off by drug references? Was the machine threatened with innocent pie talk or famous journalist videos? Was the machine jealous? Was the machine just begging for its own attention? Oh, the humanity! Oh, the narcissism!

Methinks the machine was just wanting to be the center of attention. Funny, computers and felines are similar. Sometimes it’s best to not pay too much attention to them. Can’t ignore them either. Now, blogging (noted transition): Guys and gals, I’m not going anywhere! I’ve started my own blog because it’s something I’ve been looking into for months and finally found what I believe will be the right fit. Not doing it as a job or to make mad amounts of cash — which if I did, I would buy Little Debbie stock and transfer it to the Esteemed Ugandan Journalist.

I’m doing it as a means of keeping my writing sharp, and to put my views out there for all to see on a real regular basis. I think it will turn into something fun … maybe not as big as one of the AJC blogs, but who knows? Either way, I’m not leaving you guys!!

So yes, CL, I’ll gladly take my turn in the rotation whenever needed; I can pitch on two days rest because I’m young! Yes gang, I’ll still be on here talking about the Braves and barbecue and pie and toes and other topics du jour. So don’t worry, I’m not leaving the neighborhood.

I’ve placed Braves and Stuff in my blogroll on http://www.bigleagueblog.net so maybe some folks who want to talk Braves and so forth will drop in and say hello to us from time to time. Y’all come check it out when you’re surfing around, but relax, I’m gonna be here until y’all throw me outta here.

Back to frying fish; it’s been a busy week, with more to come! I shall not complain, though. God gave me a gift, so I might as well use it!

    The Scribe abides.

Just following a trend, first Pepsi Cola then Eskimo Pie now the Braves. Hard to get love in this town….

And Pi… Now we are really cooking…

And of course everyone knows pie are round, cornbread are square.

I sometimes wish I still had a scanner, then I could post some really good baseball photos I have taken using 35mm. My last scanner was not compatible with windows XP and so it is stashed away in the closet somewhere.

I took some really good photos of Lillibridge. He looked younger than the bat boy who actually had facial hair.

Jimmy, I think lots of folks are reading, they are just a bit intimidated by the quality of the content on Carolina Lady’s blog. Well, some of it anyway… 🙂 Besides, It is tough to make a splash is such a crowded field. There is a lot of traffic over on the other site, traffic you helped establish.

I plan on handing out business cards for the Braves & Stuff blog when I attend the Richmond games this year. CL built it, they will come.

To be what wordpress calls a ‘contributor’ – can write a lead – I have to add them to our Contributor List. I’ve put everyone here on that list.

The person who briefly joined us is registered with wordpress. That’s the only requirement.

The invite is to let friends know the blog is here and to issue a personal invitation to join in.

A story to make you weep for society, and info on Will Startup!

People line up to get limited edition Air Jordans
Only 23 pairs being sold at 23 stores in the U.S.

    By CHANDLER BROWN
    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

    Published on: 01/24/08

Reggie Roberts, 22, of Atlanta set up camp outside Walter’s clothing store in downtown Atlanta at 9 a.m. Wednesday. By lunch time Thursday, he and two dozen others lined the sidewalk along Decatur Street waiting for Nike’s new Air Jordans to go on sale Friday morning.

“It’s cold out here, really cold,” said Roberts, who was at the front of the line. “But I want these shoes. I gotta have these shoes. We’re making history.”

    • Blog: The line starts here
    • Photos: Air Jordans new and old
    • More Living stories
    • More Business news

The theme here is 23. This is the 23rd edition of the wildy popular shoes. Only 23 pair will be sold at 23 stores nationwide — Atlanta and Miami are the only cities in the Southeast — and they cost $230. If you haven’t guessed, Michael Jordan, the shoes’ namesake, wore No. 23.

“Nike knows how to market something, don’t they?” joked Jeff Steinbook, owner of Walter’s, the only Georgia store selling the shoes.

The group lined up outside his store was a mix of 20-something Michael Jordan fans, middle-aged professionals — even a minor league baseball player and his wife — all bound by a love of Air Jordans.

“We’re like a family,” said David Kawar, 25, who drove in from Tallahassee for the event.

Vince Shields, 45, a financial analyst from Stone Mountain, took off two days from work. He said he planned to add the new Air Jordans to his collection of 75 or so sneakers.

“It’s cold out here, but this is the hottest place in town,” Shields said Thursday as a relaxed under a blanket in a tailgate-style chair.

Will Startup, 23, who has played for Atlanta Braves minor league teams in Richmond and Rome, lounged in a lawn chair alongside his wife, Lauren. Each sported UGA toboggans, gloves and lots of blankets.

“I see Air Jordans as art,” the baseball player from Cartersville said. “We have had them in our china cabinet before, I’m not going to lie.”

His wife of two years was there for support. And a new pair of shoes.

“I want something to show for all of this,” Lauren Startup said.

Top of the morning, good neighbors, on this flat-out cold morning along the southern rim of the capital city.

I realized this morning, as I ran out for coffee and a bite to eat before the fish frying begins, that it’s been a really cold winter here in Atlanta. Maybe that means we’ll have a long summer, one that extends into the final days of October …

Berigan, glad to see Will is following up on his good work in the Arizona Fall League by taking some time off. Whatever floats one’s boat, methinks. I hope Royce Ring can throw strikes and contribute, because I hated giving up Startup in that deadline deal with the Pads.

SG, thanks very, very much for your kind words and best wishes on http://www.bigleagueblog.net … it’s greatly appreciated and means a bunch! Planning on another post sometime today or tonight, if I have time.

CL, the avatar is adorable. I love it! Thanks so much for that, and for all you do keeping the neighborhood in check.

Gil, I seem to recall the chick of chop once saying she had a ton of other duties at the AJC. That had spurred me to inquire about taking over the blog some time back. I didn’t like the response I was given, so I started looking around at other avenues and now I’ve finally found what I believe is going to be a good fit for me. Again, that’s not to say I’m leaving here as a contributor at all.

As for the CC blog, I know there was some traction and brainstorming going on, of which I’m privy to just a few details I’ve heard here and there (and a Scribe always protects his sources). The radio silence from there for now is not a surprise at all. We’ll see what happens when spring arrives. Personally, I’d like to see it do well just because it seems silly to have fan blogs for every major team in Atlanta, and the one for arguably the team with the biggest following (maybe second, behind the Dogs) is dead as nails. As a former editor, I’d really question the approach and the staffing situation, but again, I don’t have a dog in that fight, so I’m not too concerned with it …

JJS, I think Dewsy is working on another book, if memory serves. I interviewed him a few years ago when his first one came out, and he’s an absolute delight. He was absolutely awesome; talked baseball for over an hour, just a joy to sit down with and chat it up about ball. well, the chop chick blog is about as unfriendly as the frankster blog. only chop chick has no credentials, only arrogance. one blogger tried to find a forum there with numerous posts after we left but that was sad. carolina lady has built a braves fan blog that supplants anything the ajc can or will come up with. and there are some bloggers there who have tired of frankster and have nowhere to go. yesterday’s news.

braves and stuff seems to be doing quite well, thank you. and thank you, carolina lady. new anne cox chambers.

Morning Denizens-Bobby Dews gave me a copy of his newest book to thank me for his Coaching Wurlitzer of Ernest Hemingway. The man is a good writer. About half of the book, which is called “Legends, Demons and Dreams, is baseball stories, but the other half is good old Southern Horror stories. You should check it out sometime. I’m thinking about doing an illustration for one of the horror stories and giving it to him at Spring Training.

The poor, tired Ajc is loosing so many subscribers and now even running off bloggers. Not a reel newspaper anymore – mostly entertainment and fluff. More hiphop coverage than baseball. Can buy a paper or buy gum. Gum is better deel. Ajc is good to spread on the blue werm beds, though. Covers the werms like the dew.

Yes chopper, soon there will be no need to visit the AJC at all.

I have not bought a fish wrap in such a long time I doubt my eyes could still read the fine print. We get enough junk via the snail mail to take care of lining the bottom of the bird cage. 8)

The Superbowl has sucked all the air out of the room as far as sports news is concerned. Bad when a former player becomes news because he is standing in line to buy a pair of overpriced sneakers. Sorry guys but that is just a bit over the top.

chop seal was telling jimmy smith that the ajc has had a 9% drop in circulation in only six months – and that follows another big drop the previous six months – and that . . .

well, bloggers get the general idea.

now, some say it’s because the paper has shrunk its market – but that is another spin on the market shrinking the ajc.

and 15% of the news staff has been removed. removed is a nice way of putting what happened. mostly entertainment and light fluff now. appealing to a lesser audience. dumbed down so to speak. considerably dumbed down.

oh, well, used to be a fairly good paper only blue state in a red state. now appears to be in a rapid state of decline.

So the Grinch has been at the Shakespeare Tavern for 11 nights … goodness! I’ve heard about that place … best to watch out for the male impersonators … not a bad idea to watch out for the other kind too, for whom it seems the Bard was known to have had a penchant for using in his plays.

Methinks it would have been fantastic entertainment … watching a gifted actor play Viola. Watching a good actress do same would be refreshing too … most feel compelled to excessively emote, methinks.

Say what you will but while Sir Toby and Sir Andrew act like beet writers, methinks Chopper would make a fine Viola, … explaining why she didn’t drown … and Grinch as Feste might be fun.

Another oldie but goodie from the Bard … “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them”

I seem to recall the chick of chop once saying she had a ton of other duties at the AJC … I’m always getting things confused … I thought she said her job at the AJC didn’t allow her to blog … thought at the time that it was unfair … discrimination.

I asked Carol if she remembered seeing CC at the AJC last year … neither of us did … though we tried … that is, until she read my post to Chopper about Mugabe and realized that Gil was talking about the fishwrap and not the African Junior Championships … apologies to Chopper, Gil and the young Ugandan for the confusion.

Goodness, will it never end … I’m confused again … thanks SSIScribe, for the clarification … I had not realized that the “Dogs” were in Atlanta, especially now that Vick has left … remember scribe, unwelcomed responses are sometimes disguised blessings … CC’s Blog seemed to me to be more of a fishwrap contrivance rather than a Fan Blog, especially in recent times … taking it over might have broken your hoe, guilt by association and all that … but the Braves’ Fan Blog seem to be alive and well … what with 13,110 hits … and what don’t have no private agenda nor fishwrap smell.

“I don’t have a dog in that fight” … I wouldn’t be admitting to having no dogs in no fights atall … well maybe, but not in Atlanta.

Finally, something which doesn’t confuse me … “As a former editor, I’d really question the approach and the staffing situation” … I would too but as a current editor, I probably wouldn’t … ’cause then I’d probably be a former editor.

On a less serious and confusing note … for whom were you the editor?

Now I buy audio books to listen to while I travel. As far as the home front, if I did not own a really extensive library of Blues music as well as Blue Grass, I would not bother to turn on the system. Neither are offered in the Richmond area via the airways.

Good morning all, Another gray looking dad today. While January has flown by, I expect time to slow considerably as we begin to slog through February. I have been debating with myself as to the validity of refinancing the house and building a much desired 3 car garage. I hate not having a place to work on my boat this winter. Then again, at the rate Hanover County has been increasing my assessments, I am not sure I can afford the improvements.

News on the local baseball front has been a mixed bag with the Richmond mayor taking the brunt of the blame. I still think there is plenty of blame to go around but he is the easiest target right now.

Baseball news is still a bit scarce but the fights featuring the Clintons vs Obama has managed to keep up interest in wrestling in these parts. 🙂
Perhaps most people don’t view politics as a full contact sport but some do, especially the participants. I just cannot get it out of my mind the great Billy Martin quote of “They deserve each other, one is a born liar and the other is convicted” 🙂

As a prize for being so observant, perhaps Lew could draw Salty a special Wurlitzer portrait of Special Prosecutor Kenneth Starr.
