CORDELE, GA – well, the super bowl was pretty special this year (as far as the super bowl goes) and jimmy smith watched every play. journalist was entertained – but jimmy smith felt no real passion for the contest. jimmy smith was never on the edge of jimmy smith’s chair and jimmy smith did not nervously bite jimmy smith’s fingernails. jimmy smith just watched. the grandest game in football was okay for a sunday night in february – but it might be only jimmy smith felt that way.
see, jimmy smith likes baseball. really likes baseball. baseball is the unchallenged favorite sport of this journalist. and football is no substitute for baseball. jimmy smith likes baseball so much that jimmy smith can hardly wait for the new season to begin.
jimmy smith is reminded of what bart giamatti had to say about the game of baseball:

yes, it has been lonely without baseball. cold, disagreeable. full of winter sports, leotards, basketball, hockey, snowfall and misery. misery because there was no baseball.

bloggers here long for baseball. that is apparent. well, spring will soon be sprung. and jimmy smith reminds all that pitchers and catchers report in only 9 days at the time of this writing.
and, after bobby and chino and the boys hone this team to perfection in florida, the team will open the season in the nation’s capital and on national t.v.and everybody knows who will throw out the first ball, right? not archie manning. not eli manning. not cher. baseball is america’s pastime. america’s president will throw out the first pitch. as it should be. better arm than al gore or john kerry.
many will know that the braves home opener is march 31 versus the pirates and the feared adam laroche – well, maybe not feared early in the season.
fans can enjoy all the pleasures of baseball and a trip to the ol’ ballpark. and the trip to turner field remains special – though jimmy smith is no big fan of tooner field and other such amusements.
there is plenty of entertainment for youngsters on the baseball field if taught to properly appreciate. in fact, a day at the ballpark cures all ills and makes bread rise in the oven. a day at the ballpark is always special to this journalist.

and the challenges! the confrontation! the strategy! the execution (or lack thereof). the gamesmanship.

baseball is a sport that makes you feel good. springtime. summer. outdoors (mostly). and national league baseball is the best baseball in the world – with strategy and abundant baseball skills on display. and braves baseball stirs passion. makes fingernails into nubs. creates havoc with dinnertime and with other pursuits. game time is reserved for watching the braves. and jimmy smith plans to be at the ted watching a lot of games this season. journalist hopes to see many braves and stuff bloggers there.
still, jimmy smith is struck by this last question and has no answer:

Well done young man!! Well done indeed … I had forgotten the Drysdale quote … but do remember him as the “two for one” Dodger … “hit one of my guys and I’ll hit two you yours”.
Looking at the weather map, we see just how lucky we were … there’s a long straight line of destruction going north-northwest straight “through” Nashville … strange thing is … it jumps over us and resumes north of the city.
As it stands, I think that we have 28-29 confirmed weather related deaths in the state, with about 150 injured, several critical. Evidently, there were no injuries or fatalities resulting from the gas explosion … indeed one family (wife with broken back, husband with broken pelvis, infant unhurt) owe their lives to the explosion … when out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, they sprang from the bed to see just what was the matter … a sight to behold … the sky was bright red and a giant funnel was headed right for their bed … to the tub they went … and when the storm was finally spent, all that was left, … the tub and those three.

I was thinking the other day about ‘ Super Bowl” is special day for all of us, is like another holiday to gather with family & friend to eat and watch the games….i propose to doing the same think for opening Day in Beseball, i planing to take that day off, to enjoy opening day…bbq, beer, hot dog…ah…chevrolet…..i forgot apple pie..( i like cherry)…

Jersey Gil-Bobby Cox has said all along they would go with a six man rotation to give Smoltz, Hudson and Glavine occasional days off. That is why it is likely Jeff Bennett will take Villarreal’s spot as long man and will start a game now and then to spell the big three. Makes very perfect sense to me.

JGil-One more thing-I think you will see this happening a lot more around baseball, with the cost of starting pitching getting as unreasonable as it just did with Johan. Using more, cheaper, younger or older pitchers, not quite capable of pitching 200 innings can be just as effective and maybe lead to less arm injuries as a result. With all the extra young guys we have now, it would also make sense to break them in gently and not have them pitch so many innings.
I’m still of the opinion that young pitchers under 25 years old who pitch more than 50 innings over the previous season have a much greater incidence of arm problems and regression. It happens all the time. The sports writer Tom Verducci has studied the phenomenon more closely and written some great articles on the subject. Look at what Joe Girardi did to those young Marlins guys. Annabel Sanchez may never be the same-Olsen or Nolasco, either. At the very least, Sanchez has missed an entire season and will start this one on the DL as well-after pitching a no hitter his rookie year.

I don’t know … I liked it better when most good starters were closers … maybe we should study why those who didn’t have arm problems, didn’t … and them what did, did … the former more than the latter … maybe it was because they were pitchers instead of throwers or maybe because they were deaf in one ear or maybe because they didn’t heed Polonius.
I do know we look for reasons why our gladiators fail … maybe we look too hard … or in all the wrong places.
Speaking of places, I do like the pitcher batting eighth and a situational hitter batting ninth, but six man rotations are only good if you have 6 good pitchers and that’s an unlikely scenario.
Of course, I’d pitch my number one pitcher on short rest every third time out so as to give him more rest … I would … match him up with their worst pitcher so our scoring expectation would be higher and he could pitch under less stress.
When they can’t go the innings … it’s time they became civilians.

Agreed, baseball is the best. Better than football. Better than soccer. Better than badminton, tennis, track, bowling, curling, racing, swimming and golf. Even Braves pitchers love golf but make more money in baseball. Wonder if some begin to love golf more?
Like Hank Aaron said, “It took me 17 years to get 3,000 hits in baseball. I did it in one afternoon on the golf course.”
Golf must be easier than hitting home runs, but Braves players should keep their summer jobs. Anyway, here’s hoping everyone shows up to Spring Training in good shape and good health and ready to bunt and run to their right to snag grounders and such. Preparation is the key to confidence and practice is key to small ball and small ball is key to winning when the home runs aren’t coming.

Well-We can sit here and complain that they just don’t pitch like they used to when Gibby and Koufax pitched 335 innings a year on three days rest all we want. It just ain’t gonna change the fact that they don’t do it any more. They ain’t gonna do it anymore and they ain’t gonna pay them $75,000 a year not to do it. That is a fact of life in baseball. We may not like it, but that is the way it was, as Ole Walter The Trustworthy used to say every evening.
The trend is going to be towards six man rotations. I guarantee that you will begin to see it happen and it will catch on. Just like 13 man pitching staffs and relievers having their own specific inning to pitch. That’s already started and caught on. The six man rotation is the next logical step in baseball evolution. Like it or not. Whether or not we may consider young pitchers to be a weaker lot than they were 40 years back, the fact remains that if they pitch more than 50 innings over their last season’s output and they are under 25 years old, chances are that they will end up having arm surgery.

fbg, I’m with you. The skeptic in me smells something fishy here.
But to answer your other question, no, you won’t be in trouble. Several of the regulars blog there either regularly or infrequently. Personally I read there from time to time and post very infrequently. To be “frank” about it, I don’t find it enjoyable there since most of the good ones are here now!

I’m surprised you didn’t invite him over here Lew … or somebody … obviously, players and members of the organization are always welcome … any time. Seriously, it would be fun to chat, especially with the new players and Frank Wren … and to have some that were residents of the neighborhood.

It might behoove them to investigate further and find out why that is the case … I like riding winners but black box betting is amateurish and doesn’t lend itself to long term success … have him undergo analysis … see what makes him tick. No joke.

Top of the morning, everybody. Interesting to see Chipper posting on the other blog last night. A refreshing change of pace from the usual stat-driven, insult-filled raging that goes on over there. I actually posted something over there this morning for the first time in ages.
Now, baseball: Yes, Esteemed JJS, only seven more days until pitchers and catchers report to Disney. It is a time of unabashed optimism, but soon, the real questions start getting answered:
— Can Hampton be counted on as the fourth starter?
— Is James’ shoulder well? If so, can he make the team?
— How much does Javy have left in the tank?
— Will it be Brandon Jones or Josh Anderson as the fourth outfielder, platooning with Diaz in left?
— Who will hit leadoff? Second?
We’ve dined on salad and appetizers for the past four months. Next week, the meat and potatoes start being served. I, for one, can hardly wait.

Will Chop Seal scurry over to other blog today to be there in line giddy and panting and waving and saying, “me me me please look at me” so that Chipper will notice Chop Seal and maybe say hello and give a nod and maybe even answer a Seal question and make Seals day? Will Chop Seal take no-doze and stay up all day and all night so excited and heart pounding and star struck like others on that blog to get a scoop?
Will Journalist Jimmy Smith offer to write Chipper a poem and deliver to Orlando? Baseball poem or hunting poem?
Other than that, Chipper seems like a good fella. One of my favorite Braves. Nice of him to join in with fans. Didn’t even say “uh” once. Not once. But Seal may have to promise poems and promise pies and jump up and down and ask many smart questions to get noticed. This may be Chop Seals big chance.
Isn’t Chop Seal small? Maybe can sit on artists shoulders, then Chop Seal would surely be noticed. Then Chop Seal would stand out and be eye to eye with Hoss. Oh, but Chipper may not answer to Hoss. Doesn’t seem to like that name. If Seal gets noticed, would it be a Chopper to Chipper comment?
Will Chop Seal ask about hammocks and toes? Will Chop Seal ask about, uh…
Oh, some fans hearts are still pounding. Some couldn’t sleep at all last night. Maybe they will try some fan “talking points” and be noticed by Chipper today. Yes, may need talking points. Probably working on them now.

Obviously, this is one if the first questions anyone asks regaring the 2008 Braves. Interestingly, IMO, there is less riding on the answer this year. While the Braves were counting on him the past two years, this year he is looked upon as gravy. I’m more interested in Jair Jurrjens…
– Is James’ shoulder well? If so, can he make the team?
To me, this is a very interesting question. His slight rotator cuff tear kinda flew under the radar, whether intentional or not. I’ll be watching him as closely as Hampton…
– How much does Javy have left in the tank?
Everything I’m reading and hearing says that Javy is in incredible physical condition. His offense hasn’t been a question (he hit over .300 last spring) but his defense always has been. If he can catch once every 5th day and provide some real punch off the bench, I’m happy. The real question is: is he trying out for the Braves backup spot, or for a starting spot elsewhere? Could be a spring trade? Stay tuned…
– Will it be Brandon Jones or Josh Anderson as the fourth outfielder, platooning with Diaz in left? I have been summarily informed here in this Brave new world that Brandon Jones is the future, and Josh Anderson is “Pete Langerhans”. I’ll defer…

IMO, KJ has earned the leadoff spot. I think it’s his to lose. But with BC, you never know… As to second, many options abound. Yunel, Kotsay… It will be difficult for anyone to duplicate the proficiency that Edgar displayed in the #2 spot. I believe this will be a highly scrutinized move all year…

VOR… You caught (no pun intended) Javy’s drift too I see. Saying that maybe another team might be interested in him this spring for a full time job. Cannot blame him for that. It appears that it takes about a year for guys who were on the “juice” to recover from it after discontinuing the regimen.
I would suspect LoDuca in Washington to be out for longer than the 6 weeks that is normal for scoping a knee. Just works out that way for guys doing ‘roids.
On relationships… Uh… One needs to be very careful of the cultivating friendships with the subjects they are covering lest their objectivity be questioned. Not a problem with Chopper as he has a “slash and burn” style.

Can Hampton be counted on as the fourth starter?
I would seem as long as he has gone without pitching, it would seem to make him the 5th or 6th starter…..it would seem to make sense for him to have those 8-10 days without throwing a stressful pitch(Pitch between starts on the side, sure) Theres really no way to build back that kind of arm strength except to pitch…but he’s gotta take it easy early in the year, and if I were Bobby, I’d only pitch him in warm weather (I guess Atlanta-Florida only)

and chop seal is a pretty good beet writer but it would probably hurt chop seal’s feelings if bloggers came on hear and said bill shanks breaks all the important braves trades and news hours before others. just thinking chop seal might feel that way. not sure. beet writing is hard.

Maekawa, 29, was once considered among the top pitching prospects in Japan; he was the No. 1 draft pick of the Kinetsu Buffaloes in 1997. But he struggled in recent seasons, going 1-7 with a 5.26 ERA in 2006 for Orix, and did not pitch in 2007 after being involved in a hit-and-run accident that led to a series of legal problems.
Maekawa, though, caught the Nationals’ eye while pitching this winter in the Dominican Republic. In seven games with the Gigantes del Cibao, he went 2-1 with a 1.82 ERA, prompting Washington to offer him a non-guaranteed contract that includes a chance to compete for a job in major-league camp this spring.”

Gil, didn’t read the “catch and release” stipulation; my bad. Around here I just pile ’em up in the front yard and feed the Hawks. The Palmetto hawks, not to be confused with the Atlanta ones. These hawks have more of a vertical leap.
Steve Avery favorite pitcher of ’91. Never liked Smoltz; met him in ’92 and he snubbed me and my friends. Too good for his fans. Doesn’t jibe with his religious grandstanding (or maybe it does). Oh, well. His performances over the years have won me over to at least have much respect for his talent and work ethic, if nothing else.

Grinch, I have been around Smoltzie three or four times over the years and can tell you that he was awesome each and every time. Actually had the chance to chat with him, just the two of us, for about five minutes at a charity golf tournament several years ago.
At spring training a few years ago he signed for probably 50 or 60 of us. When he got to the end, he looked up and said “Anyone else?” He turned to leave, got about thirty feet away and someone asked him to come back. We were all shocked when he came back to sign another one.
I hope that your experience with him was an isolated incident.

remember what avery did to the pirates? ace of the staff. wicked curve ball. so fun to watch avery pitch. not fun to catch, though. olson called avery the ace because the stuff was so good. lots of breaking balls in the dirt. lefty. sad that the arm tired and went away. special player.
and smoltz and olson had a little confrontation on the mound. remember that one?
remember olson on the front page after the game olson had against pittsburgh?
and mike stanton. always remember a will clark at bat and the way stanton destroyed clark. next day, stanton said to jimmy smith it was stanton’s biggest thrill to date. and remember, still pitching – and still wearing that little sissy glove.

and where did lew read that journalist is down on smoltz and chipper? smoltz is the heart of the braves. journalist has nothing but admiration for smoltz’s baseball abilities and work ethic. don’t have to revere the man, though. just a man like anyone else. made some mistakes. not holy. just a good, tough, baseball player. one of the best to come through here.
and chipper will always be uh, chipper to this journalist. a big, dumb kid that came up with all kinds of promise and has met all expectations for baseball greatness. not a role model, though. and not even the best third basemen through these parts in the estimation of this journalist.
and jimmy smith did not write that attention-getting diary, chipper did. with a crayon. and jimmy smith did not break a hammock bone.

Esteemed Journalist-If you insulted my intelligence like you do Uh, Chipper’s, I would not be inclined to send Maple Syrup, much less an autographed deer hide. Didn’t realize that you were capable of painting deer or anything else. Had I known you were an artist I would not have insulted you by sending the Hartebeest Portrait. As for Smoltz-didn’t realize I had ever claimed he was even up for Sainthood. I merely commented that he was always nice when I encountered him, after another denizen had mentioned an unpleasant encounter. It would appear that I am much more forgiving of perceived character flaws than others may be-or at least I do not make a continual issue of it.

Paladin-But I lead with my left. Actually, before I got old and fat (shifted center of balance) I was a fairly decent boxer. No one realized I was faster than I looked. Growing up in rough environs taught me a wicked right cross early in life. Got a fairly decent left jab, too. I just don’t have anyone to practice on.

you may not remember me but i remember you. my uncle dub pulled your pickup out of a ditch and you thanked him and gave him a stick of juicy fruit and uncle dub don’t chew gum because he don’t have teeth and he gave it to me. and i still have it. i really treasure that stick of juicy fruit. now, i make a pretty good living in the dry cleaning business and i wonder who does your dry cleaning? do you remember that day you slid on the ground trying to reach a ball and got grass stains on your pants leg? well, they couldn’t get that stain out at the ballpark and they sent those pants to my little dry cleaning shop for cleaning. had to clean ’em 3 times in perc but the stain finally came out. have to admit i tried ’em on and took a little infield before i pressed ’em and put ’em in a bag. my wife wore ’em for a little while, too, but that’s another story. i would like to send you a carving i did in some old wax by-product we make here at the dry cleaning plant and some pictures of me and dub out a huntin’. dub ain’t right but he has a good heart. i hope you will blog hear some more and remember me and come in some day when you need to get some lipstick off your collar. and do you remember that little 6-year old boy that was in dub’s truck 6 years ago? well that little boy is now 12 years old! that’s right! and in only 6 years. well, thanks for the memories.

oh, the humanity! a winner! carolina lady is most deserving. so many wurlitzers being produced there may be a wait. bionic artist or not. and perhaps there should be another name for this recognition in view of the other blog being the home of the wurlitzer now. perhaps it can be called, a work by lew hartman. or maybe, a really nice piece of baseball art for carolina lady in recognition of carolina lady’s contributions to blogging happiness for the braves and stuff bloggers. a bit wordy, perhaps. how about a lewie? a stuffy? a good name does not immediately come to mind – but it will. wurlitzer did work well for a time, didn’t it? everything here is copyrighted, though. per carolina lady. what to do?

I, too, add my congratulations to the esteemed Lady on her award. Actually, I had thought that you were a long ago winner. Alas, it shows how far I have to go before my time arrives. When SJA gets one, I’ll know I’m getting close. :>) Again, congratulations. It is well-deserved.

Carolina Lady has won a Wurlitzer! Not an official Committee member, but I second that emotion.
Congratulations. It’s so well deserved. As was said, I also thought you were one of the original winners. You deserve two or three of the old “home” contributions and five or six for putting up with us here in our new neighborhood.
Maybe the artist will add Yogi in there somewhere. And Bobby too. He usually adds other subliminal images, messages, artist website address and subtle drawings of other Braves players in his Wurlitzers. Maybe Lew would draw that deer that eats out of dear Carolina Lady’s hand? Could have an OBX background. Would a deer drawing have little subliminal images too? Little squirrels and birds and raccoons too? Subtle is good. That way, you see something different every time you look at the Wurlitzer.
Now a new name for Wurlitzer? Must have official home prize for Braves and Stuff blog too.

Arighty then! How ‘bout yall try conversing amongst yourselves and I will just chime in every once in a while. I just sat here and read questions for an hour. By the time I reply, there will be 100 more. U guys provide me countless hours of entertainment whenever nothing is on TV. Some of u are very smart when it comes to the game of baseball and are very accurate in yer assessment of certain things. Others, well, u need to listen to DOB and Lew a little more. Let’s get the conversation back on the Braves team. How about I pose a question to u guys rite now, let u guys reply and later on tonite, I will give u my opinion. “Chipper is back on the other blog and has responded personally to the artist” … goodness, that must have been a thrill!
Just kidding Lew … it think it would be good for us to invite players and others within the organization to visit here, especially rookies, those in the minors and those on the DL … so that we could find out more about them, their perspectives and their situations … and to offer encouragement as well. We don’t need to go through beet righters or the AJC … there are other ways … many other ways and conduits.
I suppose it’s good to chat with the high profile ones too … as they’re often seen as something other than what they are … I guess most of them are like most of us … consciously or subconsciously hiding behind masks … and most are, regardless of contrariwise protestations, ego driven, if for no other reason than their environs. I’m sure that most of them are good folks and it would be good to have their perspectives but since they are in the spotlight, their comments, by definition, are methinks more contrived than the ones of those who are not. Methinks it’s alright to have folks on pedestals just so long as they don’t start believing it’s there they belong.
Lew, I just now realized that you said earlier that Chipper was personally interacting with everybody on the Blog … surely he wasn’t blogging by proxy with some and personally with others like yourself … oh well, some folks even want money for their autographs … imagine that.
My guess is that all of us like Larry Jones … we’d all like to see him do well, especially while he’s a Brave … God gave him the talent to play baseball pretty good just like he gave Lew the talent to draw pitchers pretty good … and Jimmy Smith the talent to make people think and smile pretty good … and Most honorable the talent to proffer insights and stand up tall pretty good … and My Lady the talent to be thoughtful and gracious pretty good!
God also gave the onion and the chicken house many layers … and it seems that he spread the talents around … everybody got some and nobody got ’em all … not even Chipper.
God must have given me talent too … some folks seem to thing I speak in tongues.

I had an uncle Dub and a great aunt Bessie too … aunt Bessie was bossie, but not to me … she worked for Empire Chemical and Pencil Company and always gave me a box of pencils when we came to visit … weird pencils … different designs, composition … experimental stuff … much of which never saw its way to retail shelves. Owned a farm and could cook pretty good too … a fun place to visit, especially back during the war … never went hungry … always plenty of homemade sausage, sousemeat and blackberry pie.
Being the oldest child of parents who were both oldest children had its advantages … the disadvantages were that you were the center of attention and had to behave, and … everybody remembered you and what you did … and 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 years later thought it cute to tell stories to your siblings, wife, cousins, … anyone who will listen … if I could have a penny.
We didn’t have any DOBs … a few esses but no dees … never can find my 20 footer when I need it.

chipper, we have a little cat at our house and we call him larry wayne jones. instead of calling “here kitty, here kitty, kitty, here kitty.” we run all the names together and it comes out something like “here larrywaynejones, here larrywaynejones, larrywaynejones, here larrywaynejones.” when dub found that little kitten it was all oily and greasy and smelling bad from hanging around back at dub’s gas station. dub brought that little kitty home and told aunt sugar, “sugar, clean this little kitty up and pour him a bowl of milk and see if he can play that banjo over there by the stove. i think we can make a lot of money if that cat can play some tunes on that banjo.” uncle dub had spent most of the day in the grease pit and sometimes the fumes would affect uncle dub’s good judgement. anyway, let me tell you how that little cat got the name, larrywaynejones. dub was reminiscing about that time he helped you out and you gave him that stick of juicy fruit gum and then he gave me that stick of gum and i have never chewed it. i will never chew it chipper, that is a promise. anyway, we named that cat larrywaynejones because dub had good feelings about you sharing your gum. plus, just after sugar had washed that kitty and dried him off that little kitty started whining and crying and meowing about his oblique. the next day he would not go down to the gas station with dub. he just took a seat over there on the sofa and would not move. then one day, our boxer, smoltzy, came up behind larrywaynejones and barked and called larrywaynejones a sissy and larrywaynejones returned to the gas station the very next day. i tell you this so that i can say how much i enjoy watching you play and to let you know that we have a little larrywaynejones at our house, too. can you get me some tickets and a jersey and maybe say hello to my wife? her name is sugar, too. but i call her honey. i would like to get your autograph for honey but i don’t have $70 so here is my proposition, i will trade you a banjo playing cat named larrywaynejones for an autographed game cap. what do you say to that?

and, the word envy has been bandied about. well, soon carolina lady will announce a major guest appearance hear. expect somebody big. cakes are being cooked right now in the flbravesgirl kitchen to be used as a bribe. may take two or three cakes but should be hear soon.
and the stakes are high. carolina lady is vying for a blog audience. demographic study reveals that carolina lady’s blog is strongest with multi-syllable bloggers. other blog remains strong with single syllable bloggers and statisticians.
word to bloggers: should never mention the name of your university if your grammar and your spelling are really, really, bad. calls attention to those deficiencies. like LIGHTING IN A BOTTLE. would that be a candle? lightning bugs? sadly, the light is dim.

The KELLY!!! She is so thrilled, I cannot even describe it to you! She has no idea that she is such a truly wonderful person so this almost overwhelms her!
An email I received this morning quotes someone on the ajc blog as reporting to their beat writer that we have “serious blog envy” over here. No. I read and enjoyed CJ’s comments (though it was only as spontaneous as ajc and the Braves PR dept could make it after working out the details!) 😆 Someone can’t recognize poking fun when they see it. (Why do any of them care what we do, anyhow??)
The mental images formed by reading the bloggers’ posts were reminiscent of 12-yr-old school girls swooning over some movie star, though. That was not at all attractive, just in my opinion. Yes, it is really neat to have Braves’ players stop in and chat for a bit, but dear lord! Could just see CJ doing this 🙄 while trying to be polite.
I have to ask myself: now why would such a tactic be necessary at this point in time? Why not before? Why would CJ openly blog when he’s been happily blogging incognito previously? Why would other players now be dropping in from time to time unannounced? Many questions. But, you know what? I honestly don’t care.
No, the only big names I’m truly interested in are those of my friends right here and those who will join us in the future and that’s the truth. I care about this blog – a little homemade corner of the universe where we’re happy. Have no interest in trying to compete with a multi-million dollar enterprise; my budget here is $0.00.
Just want to talk about the Braves. And stuff. 🙂

I gave up being impressed by “famous” people a long time ago. I discovered we are all pretty much equal when it comes down to the final judgment. Now, having said that, it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t mind meeting some of you folks… I would think it to be a much more rewarding experience.

As for the pitching rotation…. I think the top three spots are a lock. It is numbers four and five that are to be determined. I will reserve my final judgment based on spring training. Big question marks remain to be the health of Chuck James and Mike Hampton. If it comes down between Bennett and James. Chuck has options. As does Jurries.

And sometimes a pencil is just a pencil. Has it occurred to one and all that the fact that someone mentioned this blog means that it is being read? No publicity is bad publicity.
As for the gushing-have you ever seen normal humans around anyone who has celebrity? This is a quite typical reaction. Watch the movie Trekkies and you will see the same syndrome at work. Of course some of the questions and many of the statements were pure, unabashed gushing. It would have shocked me if they weren’t. You mention 12 year olds swooning over a movie star. That is exactly what was happening. It is a more than typical reaction within our society. Watch Regis and Kelly Ripa sometime. This is no different.
Seems to me that there is considerable condemnation of humans acting humanly as James Lipton would undoubtedly put it. You will not change human nature.

CL, I also saw that post “over there” and somehow my name got dragged into it. I guess he was kind of trying to pay me a compliment. I think. Not really sure. Brainwashed? Hardly. Tonya? I assume that’s a Patty Hearst reference! No, I have not been brainwashed. I enjoy it here. Truth be told, I will probably be a little more active over there once there is some actual baseball talk to discuss. But lately, there’s been too much interference from Mets fools with their trash talking. And how many times can you discuss the rotation?

Sometimes, when an opponent goes out and signs someone like Santana, one must just trust in themselves and not run around wringing their hands that the other team got better. Blogging is like baseball in that regard. You have your own blog. Why do you care what they think, say or do over there. You left and started your own league. Isn’t that what you wanted?

Sir Bob and Raisins, the Dixie Crystals sugar refinery explosion is big, bad news here in Savannah. More than 40 injured, 30-35 with severe burns, dozens critical, some flown to Augusta Burn Center, six workers are still unaccounted for (presumed dead).
Authorities believe that spontaneous combustion of sugar dust probably caused the explosion. Fires are under control but continue. We are praying for the missing, injured and their families.
VOR, the plant is just west of Savannah in the adjoining community of Port Wentworth. We live east of Savannah on the coast, so it’s probably about 30 miles from us, as the crow flies. Thanks for your concern.
Frustratingly, it’s been difficult to gain specific current information from the local yokel television news media. The latest “Press conference” was a Police, Fire Department and Port Authority resume rally and learned nothing new from what was reported in the morning papers. TV Media and corporate communication experts are a rare commodity here in on the coast. Could use a scribe or three.

Yes, Lew, it is. And I’ve said many time, publicly and privately that I really want this to be a stand-alone blog, NOT an extension of ajc. But it seems that there is much more interest from them in what we do than vice versa.
I said that my observations were MY OPINIONS and that’s what they are. I have the right to state my opinions. Understand that I think the whole mess over there is FUNNY. Sad, but funny.
I guess I’m like Gil in that having met many folks whose names would be recognizable, I’ve found that some are genuinely good folk whom I enjoyed meeting; others aren’t worth a toot. Would I enjoy having the opportunity to sit and talk with some other well-known people? Sure. But I most likely wouldn’t make a fool out of myself in the process, either.
Wringing my hands?? Right.
Now, my blood pressure is up, ajc is the basis of it (again), and I’m ticked off as well. Going to the grocery store.

Got to go to work. But, before I go I had better say something about BB or Lew and the other purists will get on me.
I feel much better with the team we will field this year than last. I think we are solid in all positions with some surprises possible. As for pitching: With all those arms available, surely we can find 16(2 per player, duh)that are healthy and viable, which would give us about twice what we had last year. And maybe we can get Rosalyn(?)to throw out the first ball. Go Braves!

Paladin-You can say whatever you want to me. It couldn’t possibly be any worse than what I’ve heard from Mets’ Trolls. If you think I will run and hide or break down in tears, then you have no clue who or what I am. Quite honestly, my butt hurts considerably from a good bit of what I’ve had to listen to on this blog the past couple of weeks.
I’m glad y’all think that what happens “over there” doesn’t make a bit of difference to you, but it sure doesn’t look like that to me. What I see is almost constant references to the other place, their Lord and Master and now his guests. Constant people. Flipping constant. You have not let up since you staged your departure (and then returned numerous times to tell them what a point of honor you were making).
Fine. You felt you had to make a point. I can understand that and can even agree with it up to a point. However, when you keep hitting people in the head and keep telling them you are making a point, you alienate people-which is exactly what led to posts like Flange’s saying “Get over it.” I tried to tell you that at the time and received lots of grief for it-from MY FRIENDS.
Fine. Whatever. It is what it is and I realize that when feelings get bruised, reactions are sometimes stronger than one realizes. Human nature and I expect things like that as we are all Human, aren’t we. One makes allowances for friends that are in pain, no matter what the cause of this pain.
Here we are months later and nothing has changed. There is still constant carping about DOB, about the AJC and about anything revolving near those subjects. The fact that it has been pointed out that the time to let go passed long ago makes no difference. All it nets me or whomever else mentions it is castigation-from MY FRIENDS. Look at Flange’s reception. I almost feel like And Idiot for inviting him so he could catch his share of grief.
Now I’ve made no bones that what I’ve sought all along is insider access to my favorite sport and the personalities that populate it. Yes, I have achieved a minor level of acceptance, apparently, but have worked damn hard to get the little bit of access I have. I have given more art work away to MY FRIENDS this last three years than I have sold. This is fine with me. I have made some good friends (or at least I thought so) and have had a great time blogging-even with the TRolls. The fact that I have spent time effort and cash from my own pocket to make Braves’ fans happy is not a problem to me. I can afford to do it and feel like maybe this is my way of giving back for many of the blessings I have received over the years and maybe wasn’t appreciative of having. My own form of Karma so to speak.
Now yesterday I mentioned that I would try to use influence that I may have to help promote this blog-just like I did with the Tex drawings last year-which, if you remember you almost screwed up because you had to carp about that too and almost POed the Braves PR Department with the vitriol y’all spewed on the other blog. Now you want me to invite Chipper here to blog with us after all that has been negatively said about him and whoever happened to disagree with y’all today.
Well, I;’ve got news for you. I wouldn’t invite anyone here as long as they would be subjected to what has been said the last few days. Sorry, but I’m not going to lose what little credibility I’ve built up by working my fat behind off doing all this artwork, so Chipper can come here and have someone ask him UH, A question. Do you blame me?
Now I’m in full realization that this post is going to upset some fol;k here and will maybe get me banned from the blog. So be it. I’ve been accused of mentioning immaturity to some here. Well, all I’ve got to sya is that if the shoe fits on over that swollen toe, then wear it. I have returned from my out-of-office venture for the day… did I miss something?
I don’t have blog-envy, I have pie-envy. I’m hungry. I’m back on the caffeine, and that has been great. But now I’m hungry. I don’t know if caffeine and hunger are connected, I just know I’m hungry. Did I mention that I’m back on the caffeine? I’m making up for missing a whole day yesterday; I’m on my 5th cup of coffee. Big cups too. I could really use some food. Pie would be nice. Did I ask if I missed anything?

Actually, I believe that was a “steam” pie. Steam is a good thing… When I was a younger lad, I owned a 1970 Monte Carlo with a stock Chevy 350. That was when there was actually room under a hood to work on the motor and its peripheral components. This 350 was a strong engine; it would abolutely fly. But I had to make sure that the oil stayed changed and the fluid levels stayed full. Well, being a kid, I allowed the coolant level to drop to the point that my radiator began blowing steam. Good thing, too. It caused me to pull over, release the cap and relieve the pressure.
Unfortunately, I got slightly burned in the process; but because the pressure was quickly released, the great 350 wasn’t harmed. My burn healed and the 350 continued to run. In retrospect, that indomitable 350 could have withstood the heat. My awareness was raised, though…

this journalist is blogging here just like this journalist once blogged over there. same issues. same attitude. some will like jimmy smith’s posts and some won’t. much like some like lew’s posts and some don’t. jimmy smith gave the and idiots some trouble over there (also gave them the loving endearment “and idiot”) and often would take positions other than the accepted-by-the-masses position. jimmy smith could be irreverent in the church of the braves blog. nothing has changed. merely a new location and a much better mannered blog. journalist does not blog over there anymore and that should be enough for jimmy smith’s detractors. and grinch is right, most here do indeed think for themselves.
jimmy smith is not seeking acceptance over there. journalist feels welcome here and intends to devote jimmy smith’s blog energies to helping carolina lady build a colossus. imagine a little no-budget, homemade blog with almost 17,000 hits since december! somebody is reading. a good many are posting. braves and stuff will only get better.
jimmy smith enjoys humor. there are some quite humorous bloggers here. good fit for jimmy smith. and baseball, too. so, changing this blog into that other blog has no appeal for jimmy smith. and jimmy smith has no profit motive and absolutely no agenda except to blog with good blog friends. agendas are ugly and to be avoided.

we are all Human, aren’t we.
Well…that’s sure news to me. Are you saying only humans are allowed here? Hungh???? Well, let me tell you something right now, mister Lew…humans may have their cliques and humans may have advantages over other species but they are far from perfect. Haven’t met one yet anyway. There are many human foibles and frailties. (first combo use on blog?)
Pardon…I had to say that for my little Fly buddy. Must keep up appearances of not taking sides and all. Must also find humor in ordinary things. Life is too tough to dwell on negative things on a blog. There’s enough of that out there. One thing is for sure around Braves and Stuff. We all poke one another from time to time, therefore we all get poked from time to time. Just like brothers and sisters. Thing is, the poking here is usually not personal.
One thing is sure, many a truth is told here by the good folks on the Braves and Stuff blog. Some told in jest, some told in passionate, earnest sincerity and some just blurted out in the most beautiful, brief, no nonsense repartee. It’s all good. If anyone leaves this blog for any reason, the blog will not be as good. That’s because everyone here has been culled from around the world. Only the crème de la crème (first?). Seems Paladin can attest to creme this morning. The loss of Lew or any other current denizen would hurt Braves and Stuff.
Now, I agree and disagree with everyone on this blog. Everyone agrees and disagrees with me too (even though I’m always right about everything). Therein lies the rub and the beauty of the blog world and the other world of our other friends. Bloggin’ ain’t solitaire.
Anything respectable goes. Anything. Right? Controversy is fine. Too much gets old. Corny is fine. Too much gets old. Tragedy reports are fine. Too much gets sad. Politics is fine. Too much and some of the denizens will ignore you for days. That’s fair too. We “maka da rules and we also maka da bed” for ourselves. We usually get back what we put forth. That’s immensely fair. Baseball, BBQ, music and a wide assortment of eclectic stuff are good. Too much of it is…very good.
Lew, I could not agree more that we need to let old hurt feelings or animosities go. We should stick to our own knitting and create not only a new blog but also make new friends, new memories, write new stories, engage in new conversations, insights and coin a few of our own new B&S-isms. We need to move forward, forget past transgressions and past dustups. We need to build a new universe, not an “alternate” ajc blog.
Would be nice to get new permanent denizens here and occasional visitors from other blogs including the AJC. Would also be nice to get some new bloggers that have never discovered the new forum.
What happens here and there is of no real concern to either party and should not be dwelled upon. That said, part of this blog is about bringing news and insights of sports and unique or humorous social occurrences from all sources…including the AJC and the BravesBlog. Sometimes there are very interesting things said over there and worthy of comment. Sometimes there are “happenings” over there, like the Chipper Jones visit that are quite interesting and noteworthy in a baseball and a social studies sort of way. Chipper is one of my old favorite players…since he joined the roster.
Therein lies the rub. Moderation is key. Tone is important, as is attitude. Obsession is not good on any subject. Holding umbrage is like taking poison every day. Too much Yin and yer Yang gets all discombobulated (another blog first?). Play around with the feng and the shui gets messy.
I guess the bottom line is…give peas a chance. And watch the pie flinging.

oh, the humanity! savannah, raisins, it may be too late! those posts may go un-read. what a pity! there were some pretty poetic thoughts expressed (messy feng shui and such). still, journalist advocates a nap when bloggers become grumpy with other bloggers. jimmy smith will be napping for a time. chop seal will monitor the wire (must get chop seal a wire, carolina lady) and will brake in with any baseball news. and when journalist bob awakes from journalist bob’s nap . . . everybody will be asleep.

Whenever I see friends gettin’ testy, I just write a novel, post it and put everyone to sleep. Works every time. Naps are good. Calms the nerves. But then, you’ll wake up with the munchies. Lew may already have the munchies even without a nap.

I still like Brian Roberts of the O’s but I am not sure we could trust his past numbers. Always seems to be a correlation between increased number of homeruns and steroids intake…. Looking at all of it in retrospect, I cannot blame the players for trying to get an edge, not saying I approve of it, just can’t say that I blame them….

Well, I just took the mother of all naps and I come back to find peas restored! Bravo for SG’s 1:24. We must all be able to laugh at ourselves (I do every time I see myself naked in a mirror). And really, holding grudges against someone for killing your sister is one thing, but just for being a douche on a baseball blog is really kind of silly after an hour or two at the most. We’re all flawed, and there’s enough pain and hardship in most of our lives to where we should be using this as a place to remember how nice it is to have good fellowship with decent folk. And also Lew. 🙂

Paladin, in my experiences, “Pigs on the Wing” brings to mind entirely too many Budweisers at the Roger Waters concert at the Starplex in Dallas a few of years ago. Think bar-b-que might be a better idea at this point in my life.

That’s what I do. Yep. Wasn’t getting enough to eat with my Adkins Diet. So I figured two diets would be better. Now I’m on an all protein diet and an all carb diet. Just mix’em up and voila! Much more interesting that way.
May even add an all liquid diet to that. And then a vegetarian diet. Then an all sweets diet. That should do it.
Don’t know what the big deal is. Dieting is really not difficult. Be creative.

Paladin, no…had to quit all that stuff. Those foods were causing me to not want to go fishing with my dad many years ago. Well, he didn’t make the kids eat dog food on fishing trips but it wouldn’t have been much different.
Then again, after about five hours out on the salt water, a spam sammich was pretty darn good. Big appetite on the water. Then we’d get home for a real supper… SOS. That was a treat. At least we thought so, so it was.

SMALL TOWNS
Those who grew up in small towns will laugh when they read this.
Those who didn’t will be in disbelief and won’t understand how true it is.
1) You can name everyone you graduated with.
2) You know what 4-H means.
3) You went to parties at a pasture, barn, gravel pit, or in the middle of a dirt road. On Monday you could always tell who was at the party because of the scratches on their legs from running through the woods when the party was busted. (See #6.)
4) You used to’drag’Main.
5) You whispered the ‘F’ word and your parents knew within the hour.
6) You scheduled parties around the schedules of different police officers, because you knew which ones would bust you and which ones wouldn’t.
7) You could never buy cigarettes because all the store clerks knew how old you were (and if you were old enough, they’d tell your parents anyhow.) Besides, where would you get the money?
8) When you did find somebody old enough and brave enough to buy cigarettes, you still had to go out into the country and drive on back roads to smoke them.
9) You knew which section of the ditch you would find the beer your buyer dropped off.
10) It was cool to date somebody from the neighboring town.
11) The whole school went to the same party after graduation.
12) You didn’t give directions by street names but rather by references. Turn by Nelson’s house, go 2 blocks to Anderson ‘s, and it’s four houses left of the track field.
13) The golf course had only 9 holes.
14) You couldn’t help but date a friend’s ex-boyfriend/girlfriend.
15) Your car stayed filthy because of the dirt roads, and you will never own a dark vehicle for this reason.
16) The town next to you was considered ‘trashy’ or ‘snooty,’ but was actually just like your town.
17) You referred to anyone with a house newer then 1955 as the ‘rich’ people.
18) The people in the ‘big city’ dressed funny, and then you picked up the trend 2 years later.
19) Anyone you wanted could be found at the local gas station (Pink Potty) or the dairybar. (Land’s Drive-In)
20) You saw at least one friend a week driving a tractor through town or one of your friends driving a grain truck to school occasionally.
21) The gym teacher suggested you haul hay for the summer to get stronger.
22) Directions were given using THE stop light as a reference.
23) When you decided to walk somewhere for exercise, 5 people would pull over and ask if you wanted a ride.
24) Your teachers called you by your older siblings’ names.
25) Your teachers remembered when they taught your parents.
26) You could charge at any local store or write checks without any ID.
27) There was no McDonalds.
28) The closest mall was over an hour away.
(What was a mall?)
29) It was normal to see an old man riding through town on a riding lawn mower.
30) You’ve pee’d in a cornfield.
31) Most people went by a nickname.
32) You laughed your butt off reading this because you know it is true, and you forward it to everyone who may have lived in a small town.
I would not have wanted to have been raised any other way!!!!

Well, I enjoy it (except when they want a large order & forget to call me about it ’til the day before). Not making much money at it, I’d need a bigger operation for that and there’s no point in doing so when I’m going to move soon.

I love working from home. ‘Course, I’ve had to put mine on hold for the last 2 years, but the saws, tools and equipment are all right here, covered and stowed.

Chris, I started a little business I called Built For Birds, building birdhouses and feeders. 1″ cedar, stainless steel screws, every piece individually hand cut, sanded, drilled, assembled, in either natural cedar or with 2 coats of Marine Spar Polyurethene (sp?). My own designs. All made with lots of ventilation under the roof overhangs, drainage, (never buy a birdhouse with a perch – gives predators a handhold!), deep overhangs for protection from weather and predators, a hardware cloth ‘ladder’ inside so fledglings can get out. First rate stuff.
Wanted to supplement income when my retirement was cut by the company’s many bankruptcies and the gov’t took over the pensions. Since Mother’s health began deteriorating so badly, I had to put it aside because there simply wasn’t time to do it.

CL, that is absolutely awesome! Well, not the retirement plan being cut, but the other stuff. Anyway, I love birds too. Are you planning on participating in the Bird Count next weekend? I read about it in our local paper and I’m going to sign up.
My mother has been a lifelong bird lover. I never gave it much thought until the first morning that we woke up in our new house (almost 8 years ago). I looked outside and saw a pair of the most beautiful birds I had ever seen. They were checking out an electrical box (looked kind of like a potential nesting site). Turns out they were blue birds. I had never seen blue birds before, only heard about them, seen pictures, movies (Song of the South), etc. I was hooked!
I bought a bluebird house that day and several bird feeders. We didn’t get any bluebirds in the house that year (too late in the season) but we’ve had them every year since. It’s been so much fun watching the parents build their nest and raise their broods. Late last year, something (squirrels I suspect) tore up the original box I put up so I built them a new one this winter. I made it from a wood called ipe (pronounced ee-pay), aka Brazilian mahogany. It is extremely dense and from what I’ve read, it is pretty much impervious (first use on this blog?) to weather, insects, predators, rot, etc. It is beautiful wood and I pulled (reclaimed/recycled)it from a dumpster at a new-home construction site not far from my home.
Anyway, in addition to the blue bird house, I have six or seven feeders that I keep filled with seed. Aside from all the #(%* @(#$)*#) squirrels that are getting fat off my money we see a ton of birds each and every day.

Terrific, Chris! I LOVE watching birds! Many varieties come here every year, many stay all year.
One early spring day, I was at the kitchen sink, just looking out the window while I did whatever it was, and saw the first hummingbird of the season.
What was remarkable about it was, it was hovering at the place where a feeder always hung – but I hadn’t put it out yet for the new season.
Obviously this little guy had been here previously and remembered that a feeder had hung in that particular spot!
Oh, the squirrels! There’s just no way to keep them out of feeders! 😆

I’ve seen that shirt too, CL. 🙂 We have a large bird feeder outside the bay window of our breakfast room in GA & really enjoy the birds ( & yell at the squirrels). So many more kinds than the few we have in Florida. Have to put up a new bluebird house, the old one is broken.

CL…. Sorry about the pension, I saw that coming many years ago when the government allowed companies to tap pension funds. They were just as bad as the crooks who served as union treasurers who were always being caught embezzling money.
I have never found a bird house that was squirrel proof, you might make it difficult for them but eventually they will find their way in.

Do you ever see painted buntings in NC? They are the most amazingly beautiful birds that I have ever seen.

One is in the basement, which is where my living quarters are. It’s basically a separate apartment (pretty large too). I guess it was built as a “mother-in-law suite”. They must have liked the mother-in-law, it has a big bedroom & bathroom, sitting room w/ stone fireplace & French doors leading to a private terrace, good-sized kitchen, another room that will be a guest room.

Man. I love to shoot but lost my taste for hunting after my Dad passed away. I don’t know why… just did not want to kill anything anymore. Don’t mind other people hunting though… call Grinch or Hillbilly. 🙂
We have been very lucky with the blue birds here. House wrens will take over their house though if you are not diligent. Humming birds will come back every year to the same place but they are very territorial. We have a feeder in the front and the back of the house so they don’t fight.

Gil, I shot a mocking bird with a BB gun when I was about 13. Felt sick about it for days. I’ve never been able to kill anything since. Not even fish. Gotta release them whenever one is dumb enough to take my bait.
You’re right about hummingbirds. They must be the Napoleons of the bird world! But then again, I’ve never seen one with a wing tucked into its chest feathers!

Let me know if you’re in the city limits or not so I’ll know what to bring; high-powered pellet or .22 short if yes, or .17 WMC if not. My history with squirrels goes way back too. I was living in an old (1820’s) house in downtown Charleston when Hurricane Hugo hit in 1989. I had an apartment on the third floor. Because of the very high ceilings of this old home, it was a good 30 feet from my bedroom window to the ground. Anyway, a good part of the tin roof came off in the storm. A family of squirrels, that had probably lost their home too, moved into the attic and setup shop just above my bed. Those freakin’ (can say?) squirrels NEVER slept and were constantly crawling moving around in the ceiling keeping me awake.
One day, I came home after a long day of cleaning the restaurant that I was managing at the time. I walked into my bedroom and one of the squirrels was sitting on the window sill. He/she saw me and started taunting me. I walked slowly over to it and just as I reached the glass I jumped towards the window, yelled and lunged towards the window! I scared the bejesus (can say?) out of said squirrel and it jumped off the sill. I threw open the window hoping to see the splattered remains. Instead, I was greeted by its mate. He/she was on the roof screaming squirrel profanities at me! I’ve never taken a verbal beat down from a squirrel like that before or since. I used to have a feeder here on a shepherd’s hook. Of course the squirrels just climbed the pole… ’til we greased it. Amazing how much entertainment you can get out of watching them slide down like little firemen, looking confused.

I get so frustrated. Sometimes all of my feeders are completely filled with squirrels. I don’t mind that they eat my seed but it makes me mad when there are so many that the birds can’t eat!

Bird chirping and squirrel chatter on the blog last night. A peaceable kingdom. Hope the Braves see some painted buntings this summer.
This denizen loves the birds. Bluebirds, cardinals, blue jays, and many other birds live around the Guy’s home too. Ospreys have breakfast at Guy’s backyard fish market many mornings. Even bald eagles visit occasionally. Funny how, when the marsh hawks and eagles show up, all birds and squirrels instantly disappear. If it gets quiet in the back yard and there are no signs of activity, the silence is so noticeable. Deafening silence.
When that happens, often you can look up and notice one or more of the birds of prey hovering above the trees or perched on a limb. It’s like a silent alarm sounds. When the predators leave, all the birds and squirrels return and life goes back to normal.
When squirrels become overpopulated they really are a problem. Not just because they eat all of the birdseed but also because they are prone to disease and parasites. Thinning the population is not sport (for me) and not fun but sometimes is best for the health and the balance. Grinch has it right, a 22 with CB caps (pellet) is what I use. Silent, instant and the neighbors won’t freak. Usually just once every few years suffice. Sad, true, necessary for critter health.
Like deer, most if not all of the natural predators are gone near urban areas, so like it or not, we are it. Game managers. We caused it…we have to manage it now. Birds can managed themselves. Well, except for the pigeons. Fortunately we don’t have those much around our home. They like the fast-food feeding grounds. Why eat bird seed when you can get french fries. Rats with wings.
Have any of the bird lovers here seen the cedar waxwing? One of my favorites and one of the most beautiful migrating songbirds, although I’ll usually only see them once a year, if lucky. I used to see them more inland. They like the holly and berry trees and usually travel in large flocks. They’ll arrive by the hundreds like a storm; strip a tree or bush of berries in minutes. Multicolored as they are, they also leave a multicolored mess on your car and driveway. Well worth the trouble if you are blessed with a visit.

Top o’ the mornin’ Paladin. Hey, you might even throw in on some squirrel or bird stories too. Like the time you had to squirrel out the back door of the saloon after a brawl when the MP’s showed up. Maybe a bird story, although your birds didn’t run very well on bird seed. Can’t push any G’s with that stuff.

When Josie and I first moved to Mechanicsville, we would by bird seed by the fifty pound bags. We would diligently keep the feeders filled and almost as quickly the squirrels would empty them out. So we escalated and bought squirrel resistant feeders (we all know there is no such thing as a squirrel proof feeder). We kept the extra seed in a 30 gallon Rubber Maid trash can with a lid. The squirrels were frustrated by the feeders but not so with the storage, they gnawed a hole in the plastic G.I. can and hit the mother lode….
I ended up buying a metal container to store the bird seed as well as buying two for chicken feed. As for the feeders, the squirrels finally figured out a way to get to them. One would climb on the feeder and turn it upside down emptying out the contents to his buddies who were waiting on the ground.

At one time I had no trouble knowing when the feeders were low/empty. One cheeky little guy (squirrel) would go from window sill to window sill of each room until he found me, then he would shake the screen and chatter to get my attention so I’d come refill them.
He had me well-trained! 🙂

This will, in a way, dovetail with CL’s post on small-town living and the above. Until recently I lived on a dirt road in the country. The normal peace and quiet was being marred by a group of teen-agers(?) who were coming out on a regular basis drinking(throwing their beer cans in the ditch); drag racing, and playing loud “music”. One night when they were located several hundred yards up the road I went out on the porch and did my best Saddam imitation, firing a clip from the AK skyward. Following the scramble to get-out-of-Dodge, that night, it was very quiet on my road.

Godd morning to all…
While I would love to engage in the bird/squirrel/semi-automatic weapon chatter, I have a very rare commodity at hand. I have a Saturday with no place I have to be, and nothing I have to do. Therefore, I am going to spend this time working on restoring my recently acquired 1930 National Tri-cone nickel-plated square-neck resonator guitar. While I have never spent more than $300 on any one of my guitars (of which I own 7 or 8, I lost count) this one is very valuable and a collector’s piece. It was given to me by a very dear friend who wanted it to remain “in the family”. I plan on playing it once I get it back to playing condition. I’ll send CL a picture when it’s done.

CL, that does sound good. I sure hope he makes it back, even if he has to go on the DL a few times during the year. It must be horribly frustrating to blow out your hamstring in such a weird way after one inning. Let him make 20+ starts at least, and let them be effective. SG, yes I am familiar with the waxwing. Very striking bird. We see them generally once a year as they migrate back to their summer homes. Gotta watch out for them though. Sometimes the sugars in the berries ferment and they get a little wasted. You can tell when they start flying into windows!
Since so many of us seem to have more squirrels than we know what to do with, here’s a little something to think about! I mean, culling them and throwing their little corpses away would just be criminal, right?
BBQ Squirrel
~ 4 squirrels, quartered
~ 3 tbsp salt
~ 2 tsp pepper
~ 1 tsp garlic powder
~ 1 tsp onion powder
~ your favorite dry rub
~ 15 charcoal briquets
~ 3 handfuls hickory chips
~ your favorite bbq sauce
In a large pot, boil the squirrel in water seasoned with the salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion powder for 1 hour or until tender.
In the meantime, soak the hickory chips in water. Light the charcoal and let them get white hot. Place them to one side of your grill.
Remove the squirrel from the water and pat dry. Coat with your favorite dry rub.
Add one handful of wood chips to the hot coals.
Place squirrel on grill across from the hot coals. Cover and smoke for 1 hour. Add a handful of wood chips every half hour.
Add last of the wood chips and baste squirrel with bbq sauce. Smoke for another half hour basting another 3 – 4 times.
Serve with mashed potatoes, sweet corn and buttermilk bisquits.

My dogs take care of the corpses and no dry rub is required. But, I’ll keep your recipe in case any pigs get in my trees.
And, shooting squirrels with an AK is the “green’ way. You reduce the critter population and trim limbs at the same time. Whether this helps global warming is still under study.

Funny, I know a woman who started a catering biz with her husband (Used to see them and her Pa at car cruise shows) now too busy on weekends to come to the shows. I know another woman from the website http://www.littlegreenfootballs.com (A political website, you all have been warned!) who does catering in some strange faraway place like Montana. Always torturing us with some food she is cooking while chatting. Keeps her megabusy as well.
Anyway, I had a thought. When you get up this way, why not try and see if you can sell desserts via craigslist??? I really don’t know if this is possible, but since almost all craigslists, like politics is local (AKA http://www.atlanta.craigslist.com ) you could just bake and mail…IF the food can survive. I hear you always talking about mailing the stuff to folks, but never know if you are kidding about that…. craigslist is free, in case you didn’t know that…

Chris, (story link) those people are just insane. They want no freedom (except their own), they want no laws (except their own), they are tyrants. They have no respect for life, not even their own. They are in every country and are forcing entire nations (Spain, France, anyone?) to give in to their will by threats of mass violence. What a religion!
Yesterday Berigan sent me some articles he located in British papers on Muslim take-over in the UK. The Archbishop of Canterbury says the Britain may as well adopt Sharia law. HUH???
And there are strong enclaves being established in the US, as well. A town in Minnesota(?) now has loud speakers located all over the town which blasts the ‘call to prayer’ 5 times a day, beginning at 5 am. Grocery stores now have separate line for men and women and Muslim clerks refuse to check out anyone who purchases a pork product.

I’ve just given up and put food out for the squirrels, too. It’s easier on your nerves and saves hair from being torn out. It is the only alternative to insanity. Squirrels are the super race and we just have not figured it out yet. Just feed them. They like corn and sunflower seeds.

Chris, the whole “running around in the walls” first thing in the morning business is what started our little range war here, too. My house is pre War of Northern Agression as well and there are plenty of places for them to do so. However, since I’ve moved back here full time with most of my weapons and a mated pair of Hawks have taken up residence in a tree by my pond, they seem to have slacked off a bit. SG’s right; when I first moved back here and started dispatching them I noticed many were diseased. Not good for Grinch pup.
UK taking over the world? I know they’ve got a good basketball team, but that sounds even flimsier than the excuse for invading Iraq (but not much). 🙂 Oh, the humanity! Politics! First zinger of the day goes to me.

From time to time I find I find bird seed that is treated with some sort of pepper. Apparently, the birds can’t taste it but the squirrels can! Man, you outta see those little buggers cuss when they get a mouth full of pepper!

Grinch; I do own an AK but I don’t hunt squirrels with it. Just joshing the troops a bit. I think they call it artistic license. Others call it BS-ing. Anyway, I’ve had the homeplace squirrel-proofed and what they and the dogs do outside is their business. Don’t ask, don’t tell.

Great recipe for B-B-Q squirrel. I had a good friend who would save the trimmings from his fruit trees each year and use them for smoking game. Apple is very good for smoking turkey legs.

Sorry to hear you folks have such a devil of a time with squirrels. They don’t worry any of my feeders at all. One feeder (Yankee Doodle) hurls any squirrel stupid enough to latch on. Very funny! Sadly, though, squirrels can apparently pass along genetic ‘messages’, as even the new critters merely stare, or think about testing the feeder, but never do! As for the other feeders, the squirrels aren’t as attracted to them as they are my neighbors! Works for me! 🙂
Bluebirds…have lots…don’t forget the mealworms…they love ’em, but so do the robins, so make sure the feeder has limited access.
Haven’t had the painted buntings…lots of Indigos, gold finches and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks…neat bird. And hummingbirds…goodness, those females are testy…and then some, but further descriptions would fall outside ‘family blog’ allowances.

At least there is a NASCAR “event” tonight so TV is not a total waste but close. I really miss baseball….. Some of my best naps occur between the 3rd and 6th innings.

My one and only comment on religion tonight…. The natives of the Caribbean, Central and South America did not fare too well when conquered by the Spanish. They were given a choice of converting to Christianity or being beheaded. Either way they were enslaved.
No one should doubt my faith but I also know many terrible things have been done in the name of religion. We all must be diligent to hold our leaders accountable for their transgressions and not be fooled by those who prey on the weak minded. We all must be diligent and take care who we choose to lead us.
That said, we all must be careful whom we allow to enter our tent.

I have just had a baon-wrapped, medium rare fillet. Bake potato with sour cream, chives and bacon bits; and and a salad with buttermilk dressing. I washed it down with “several” glasses of Chianti. I’m now having chocolate-covered cherries and Grand Marnier with a cigar. I’m melllllow. Call me anything but a cab and I’ll just smile. Here, CL! We had a fire tonight so I had to wash the smoke out of my hair. Yuck. Other than the smell I love it.
I’m making brownies tomorrow for an order. Now when I make brownies for us (& don’t have to worry about packaging them) I make my famous fudgy Black & White Brownies. Gooey, messy & butt-kickingly good.

From earlier ‘pork’ chatter: my comment was based on it sounding like an ethnic grocery store. If you visit a kosher grocery store, you won’t find pork there either…nor shellfish (that’s a sacrilege!)

fbg, I don’t really want you share of the bbq squirrell. Frankly, my share was more than I wanted. For months now you’ve come on here, taunting us with your baking ability. Oh, the brownies, the cakes, the pies, the tarts, the cookies. Oh sure, now you have a cool avatar (thanks to “you-know-who” (aka “yours truly)) that indicates that you’re “really” a fabulous creator of baked desserts. But how do we really know that you can?
I mean, how do we really know anything you say you are? You say you are from Florida. Really? How do we know? You say you’re moving to Georgia. Really? How do we know? You say you have a small baking business. Really? How do we know? Are you even a Braves fan?
For months, SG and I have been trying to get you to agree to a baked goods distribution deal that would cover the entire Southeast market. But NOOOOOOOOOOO, you won’t agree.
You know what I think? I’ll bet you’re not a baker. I’ll bet you don’t even know how to turn your oven on! Do you even own an oven? My money is on “No”.
You wanna prove yourself? Send some baked goods to all your friends at Braves and Stuff. Then we’ll believe that you are who you say you are.

Figured I’d duck in here real quick as I relax after trying to fend off the second coming of this cold of mine and get ready for my fantasy baseball draft tomorrow afternoon. Sitting on the back porch with a glass of wine, a cigar and a mind that won’t stop racing, thinking about all the things I need to do the next month or so.

Watch it there, Klobber, unless you want to see one of those “testy females” Salty mentioned earlier. Usually someone else brings up the baking. I swear y’all are obsessed. Now I know a lot of people who apparently only have a kitchen because it came with the house. Said people always seem amazed that I cook most all of the family meals & bake, as if it was some rare & unusual ability.
Now since you won’t be there to try for yourself, you’re just going to have to take Lew & Grinch’s word for it. Anybody else joining us in Clearwater? I need backup here.

ssiscribe … I am not sure on the rules of your fantasy draft but two guys you might pick up late in the draft who are keepers are Shawn Hill and John Patterson of the Nationals.
Folks, it’s kind of fun to watch an organization build from the ground up, especially when you have become old enough to appreciate it.
On Dan Snyder…. He is a Peter Angelos clone when it comes to running a sports franchise. Opting for Zorn as a head coach when he already had Williams available was the sign of a megalomaniac. Now the Redskins have to start all over again while they bring in a new system again. He thinks he owns a fantasy team. Like Angelos, he makes it difficult for me to root for a “local” team.
The owner of a team can have an affect on how I feel about a sports franchise. I once rooted for the Red Sox until they threw Grady Little under the bus. I cannot root for the Marlins because the owner is “and idiot”. Not that he isn’t a smart guy as far as making money, it is just he does not care about the fans in Florida and thus will not even try to field a decent team. Tampa Bay has one of the best stocked minor leagues in baseball but apparently have no clue as to how to translate that into success.
Jabba the Hut? How did you figure out my nickname? Yes, too many brownies can have an effect on ones ability to “run faster and leap higher” :-).

More baseball news than we can possible digest at one time will soon be upon us. I look forward to Mike Hampton’s return. What a boost that could be if he can return to form. Of course our expectations are lower now because of his history of injuries but boy, if he can pitch it would make a huge difference in the balance of power in the NL East.

Lastly, they’re God’s way of punishing you for the thoughts you held as a teenage boy yourself! 😆
At least you’re well prepared to ‘evaluate’ their suitors! I’ve found cleaning the shotgun when they pick her up to be particularly effective! It really shines!

jimmy smith has found white vinegar mixed with rotten egg and rose petals to be a most effective subsitute for commercial flat screen glass cleaners. also a good hair remover.

EDITORIAL:
Three and a half days and we’re nearing 600 posts. Pretty good.
But, we’re missing most of our bloggers.
There has been some tension here of late and wouldn’t be surprised if that has a lot to do with it. Folks don’t want to be where they are not comfortable and I don’t blame them.
Getting down the the very, very bottom of the problem seems to be one person from another blog who delights in running back and forth between the two blogs, “reporting” on his observations of what we are or are not doing/saying here. Very juvenile, insecure behavior. Trying to make it a competition of some sort. Demeaning. He’s keeping track of names of those participating here and publishing those names over there.
I’ll say this: I’ve done everything I can to make this an interesting place to be. Video links, info links, photos pages, keeping it clean. I’ve just spent several months desperately trying to keep my mother from the brink of death, pursuing every medical avenue possible, and I just don’t have anymore inner resources to put into this. It’ll sink or it’ll swim.
Blog about what you want to blog about. The original two rules still apply:
keep it clean and no attacks. I personally am never going to read anything pertaining to ajc again, in any form. Don’t have the energy to expend on childishness. (If I said what I really feel about it, even Paladin and SJA would need smelling salts!) 😆
So! Have fun. I’ll mostly be in the background keeping things running.

chrisklob; My Granddaddy grew up in the rural south where everyone was given a nickname like “Stinky”, “Shorty”, etc. He wanted to be known simply as Thomas. So, he devised this strategy: When anyone called him by a “nickname”, he thought up the most outrageous name and called them that. It worked. My Granddaddy died being known, simply, as Thomas. I learned many things from him, including how this is done. Truce?

CL…. I don’t know what was said or by whom but please take heart that you have a loyal following. Unfortunately, at the point in time access to players is limited to those with bona fide credentials. That should not deter us, however, from expressing ourselves pro or con as to the moves made by the clubs or the performance of players on the field.
There are lots of very good minds assembled on the B&S blog. As far as pure entertainment, this is the best. You folks should see some of the National’s blogs I have visited. They are lucky to have 5 post in a week. So, CL… Do not worry about what others may say or do, to thine own self be true…

My sparse participation has nothing whatsoever to do with ruffled feathers. I said what was on my mind and others said what was on theirs.
I have until Tuesday to overnight a deer painting for Chipper to Orlando. It usually takes me two weeks and I had four days this time. Deadlines. After that, I will not be blogging, here, there, or anywhere from Feb. 14 until March 2 or 3. I refuse to fight slow internet access on my son’s computer. I will file a report when I return and hopefully, all denizens will be in Orlando so I can report on them.
