33: Anticipation abounds as the journey to October begins

ATLANTA – The flags high atop Turner Field fluttered in the breeze Sunday afternoon as I walked across Monument Plaza.

Through the gate to the left of the ticket window, I could see the sun glistening off the dark blue seats high in the upper deck, down the right-field line. A few other souls were present, putting down their cash in exchange for seats to a show we hope will play on past September.

And that’s where we stand as the 2008 season cranks up for the Atlanta Braves on Sunday night in the nation’s capital. This franchise, once known as laughable losers, then for a decade and a half as consistent winners, finds itself at the intersection of third place and the Fall Classic.

It’s been nine long years since Atlanta graced the World Series stage. Since then, the Braves have won exactly one postseason series, a three-game sweep of the Astros in the 2001 NL Division Series. The Braves then lost in the NLCS to Arizona. Four heart-wrenching losses in the division series would follow, followed then by two consecutive finishes in the middle of the NL East.

Turner Field sat empty the past two Octobers, as it was on Easter Sunday while I bought my tickets for Monday’s home opener. The laughter of two children pierced the otherwise silent scene. But you could feel something in the air, and it wasn’t just the swirl of that northwest wind.

It was the feeling of anticipation.

Maybe it’s the fact our new house includes a sports garage where all my baseball stuff is displayed. Maybe it’s the fact I’m blessed to be in a place where I can go to 30-to-40 games this season. Maybe it’s the fact my kids now are really into baseball. In the 30 years I’ve been paying attention, I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to a Braves season as much as this one.

Or maybe, just maybe, it’s because this team looks like those Braves teams that danced deep into October on a consistent basis in the 1990s. The Braves, as many of us have stated, needed to stock up on pitching. That, after all, is what the Braves did in the past, the very foundation for their 14 consecutive division championships, their five pennants, their one World Series championship since 1991. Pitching, pitching and more pitching, stocked like one packs their pantry in advance of an oncoming storm.

If the Braves falter in 2008, lack of arms won’t be a reason why. The starting rotation is solid. The bullpen is deep. There are plenty of arms waiting in the wings. The Braves have the pitching talent to win over the long haul, to sustain the ups and downs that make up the six-month grind toward October.

Absence makes the heart fonder; two consecutive early winters have me longing to see the Braves return to the postseason. The journey is a delight, to be sure, but at the end of the day, you play to win the World Series. Even though many of us felt last year’s Braves were good enough to succeed in the playoffs, you can’t win in October if your season ends in September. And that’s where the Braves’ campaign the past two years has concluded.

But when the 10th month of 2008 arrives, the feeling here is Turner Field won’t be quiet. The Braves finally look like the Braves again. It’s the look of a team with the calm, steady confidence that comes with knowing they stand a good chance to win 90 times this season, and that will be enough to shatter the silence that’s descended on the corner of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and Hank Aaron Drive the past two autumns.

On Easter Sunday, Turner Field stood still. But I could almost hear the crowd roaring. It starts now, and it will reach its crescendo come October, when the Braves – and the good denizens of Braves Nation – storm back into the postseason.

Whew lawd… shoot up here amongst us as one of needs relief. Another tree bites the dust and I am whipped. I forget I am not as young as I once was. I cannot take a pain pill while I am operating a chainsaw and they make my legs weak. Net results is having to drag my butt in the house after felling the tree and getting up all the logs. One remains until tomorrow or Saturday as it was too heavy for my tractor.

Now baseball… Thorman still on the team???

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) – A judge known for creative sentencing has ordered three Spanish-speaking men to learn English or go to jail.

The men, who faced prison for criminal conspiracy to commit robbery, can remain on parole if they learn to read and write English, earn their GEDs and get full-time jobs, Luzerne County Judge Peter Paul Olszewski Jr. said

Talk about “creative sentencing”! You go, Judge!

Great story on Red Skelton on the other blog…
there was a slight baseball connection with him(I Thought he might have been part owner of a team, but didn’t find any info on that) He was in the MGM musical, Three Little Words, a “biography” about the songwriting team of Ruby and Kalmar.(They wrote lots of music, including songs for the Marx bros in Animal Crackers, and Duck Soup) Red plays Harry Ruby, a guy that is a wannabe baseball player…Wow…even I’m kinda bored by this… 😕

Do you think we are going to supply you with a translator all of your life?” the judge asked them.

The four, ranging in age from 17 to 22, were in a group that police said accosted two men on a street in May. The two said they were asked if they had marijuana, told to empty their pockets, struck on the head, threatened with a gun and told to stay off the block.

Attorneys for the men said they were studying the legality of the ruling and had not decided whether to appeal. One of the attorneys, Ferris Webby, suggested that the ruling was good for his client, Guzman-Mateo.

“My client is happy,” Webby said. “I think it’s going to help him.”

Here is some more of the story. And Berigan, I think you are wrong. They are apparently products of the local Spanish-Harlem.

    • “What disappointed me most in Texas is Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s receiving. He struggled behind the plate, and I loved him last year. Hopefully, it’s a confidence thing because he was rough back there.” For what it’s worth, Bobby Cox liked his catching more than his bat.

This after Pete batted .389 for the spring. I guess those folks in DC don’t really care all that much for Canadians.

Don’t look for Nick Johnson to be available anytime soon. He has won the starting job at first base for the Nats. Demetri really has some issues with his diabetes. Too bad… I hope he gets it together.

That surprises me about Salty too; KC and I saw his big league debut and I was as impressed with his ability to jump up and gun someone down at second as just about anyone I’ve ever seen. Must indeed be a confidence problem; he practically oozed it then. And how do the Nats send down someone hitting .389? Can they afford that? Then again, maybe that’s why they stink in the first place.

Paladin, I’ve found that the easiest people to represent in criminal trials are those who are the most guilty. It often just becomes a matter of making sure the due process is respected and a fair sentence is handed down.

The ones whose guilt you never become sure of, well, those are the difficult as hell cases that torment you for the rest of your life. There is nothing worse than that kick to your gut feeling when you hear guilty from the jury and then 20 years with 15 to serve in prison out of the judge’s mouth and you don’t know if he is guilty or not.

Top of the evening, denizens. Thanks very much for the kind words on the post. Should’ve had it done earlier, but much fish to fry on this end of the capital city this week.

As you can tell, I’m fired up and ready for this season to start. I’m tired of watching and listening to exhibition games. I’m done with talking about who’s going to make the end of the bullpen and who’s going to make up the bench, who’s going to hit leadoff. I’m ready for the show to get started.

I’m ready to watch some ball that MEANS something. And every game means something once the regular season gets under way. It’s time, good members of Braves Nation. It’s time.

My new jersey is hanging in the closet. My tickets for Monday night are sitting in my desk. Now, we’re watching that stupid, stupid clock tick down. It’s going so slow … oh, goodness, run clock run! Get us to Sunday night, get us to the first pitch of a journey that’s going to carry this team and its legion of supporters back to October, the month that matters most, the month where you stand 11 wins from the holy grail and a spot in the hall of champions.

When I said I’ve never looked forward to the start of a season so much, I meant it. I just have a feeling we’re about to go on a ride that’s going to be unforgettable. It’s a ride we’ve waited for, and now, we’re up right at the front of the line, waiting for the roller-coaster to pull into the loading station.

It’s almost go time, good people. And I, for one, cannot wait to strap myself in and see where we end up.

    The Scribe abides.

    Scribe, great lead as always.

SG, I think we should continue that debate from yesterday over email. It would be easier to converse back and forth on something that complex that way. Blogs don’t provide enough space to say all that needs to be both ways. Also, there are tough things I have to say about it that I don’t really want to say publicly. And that doesn’t mean I have anything tough to say about you or anything like that. It’s just that it is a racial issue and I’d rather have my unfiltered thoughts on issues like we were talking about yesterday talked about in private because even the people I am defending won’t like alot of what I will have to say about them either.

My brother-in-law was in a car accident about 12 or so years ago and broke several vertebrae in his lumbar region. They never healed and eventually degenerated so he had to have surgery to fix it. They fused the remains of four discs together. Unfortunately, the Army doctors didn’t do a good job and only one side “took”. He’s in constant pain and is on all sorts of pain pills. He also augments that regimen with alcohol. Makes me very nervous about his future as the combination can’t be good over the long haul.

My Dad’s back is a mess, Disc degeneration(Which of course most of us have, just some cases are worse than others) and tons of arthritis. The Doctor said when my Dad straightens up, the bones spurs, etc pinch his nerves, hence the reason my Dad walks stooped over. Well, after months of getting massages, some stretching and a type of traction….he has much less pain, and can stand for longer periods of time. Hey, what can it hurt??? Those pain meds can be rough on the liver and kidneys…and I think it’s all the stupid codene(sp?) aka Tylenol they put in there with the real pain med, that causes issues….

FLB, I was curious….it may be IE holding onto cookies. You might close all your windows down and then see if it shows up…if you cared…

Mozilla is probably the easiest if you ever feel the need. I used to hear folks years ago say how wonderful Opera was, much better that IE….well, it stunk! I don’t think I saw one atvantage to it…There was another one that was supposed to be great(can’t for the life of me remember the name) ….I kept wanting the ajc baseball blog to not freeze my computer. Finally tried Mozilla, much quicker than IE for that, and I assume this blog as well. I still use IE for most everything else, just because I can send a whole page back to my email account, verses just a link with Mozilla. But, mozilla is simple, uses the best stuff of IE. You can have both browsers on your desktop by the way. Heck, I even have Netscape on my desktop!

Y’all need to read the AJC article about Mableton’s ampitheater and the new acts it’s bringing in, which include Michael Bolton (with the Cobb symphony orchestra) and Kenny Loggins. “County commissioner Helen Gorham practically jumped out of her seat upon hearing Kenny Loggins’ name.” I did too, sweetie, but for different reasons. I find it hilarious both that a guy who sold about 20 million records is having trouble selling out a venue in Mableton and also that there are still 2,000 people willing to shell out hard earned cash during a depression to see that loser belt out “Footloose” and “Highway to the Danger Zone” live. As Yakov Smirnoff would say: “What a Country.” I’d rather watch a sun dial rotate. Any of y’all gonna break out the leg warmers and Val Kilmer sunglasses for the show?

Kerry Wood’s still hitting 97, huh? I bet they’re waiting for his arm to go with the ball to the plate with every pitch. Has there ever been a bigger wasted talent without drugs involved than that guy? Anyone who complains about Hampton just needs to go check him out. He came up in what seems like the 1970’s, struck out 20 in a game when he was about 19, then pitched about 50 innings since. Him and Mark Prior were supposed to be the greatest 1-2 punch in baseball history for the Cubs, and I think they’re still working on hitting 200 innings combined for their career. Lesson: Don’t EVER play for the Cubs.

Think Prado may be heading outta here, guys. No sense otherwise to deal for Gotay when you already have Prado and Lillibridge, and Infante coming back in a couple of weeks.

Prado had a great spring and a great year last season at Richmond. Think he, along with Thorman, may be enough to pry a power-hitting first baseman to back up Tex? Just speculating, but the more I think about it, that makes sense.

I didn’t see a need for us to pick him up, but the guy hit .295 last year, and is only 25! Was he out of options???? Gotta like the move…even if injured…and who knows if Infante can come back as soon as folks think.
I do feel sorry for Prado though. Some teams have less confidence in the home grown talent than their own…which is strange. Just look at the Cubs. .296 average over 3 years…26 years old. And sweet Lou won’t play him, they’d rather have Reed Johnson, who was released by the Blue Jays, because he can play center, and you sure don’t want to give can’t miss prospect Felix Pie the job everyday….sigh…..the more you know , the less you understand….

I was just sending my regrets about it. We already have franchises in ATL, Rome (nice park) and soon to be Gwinnett. We’re spoiled.

I can’t say I won’t go catch a Triple A game up I-85 when they’re here but I do think it’s crappy. They already relocated G-Ville and now Rmond.

Gil I hope you can make it to DC for that weird one game set against the Nats.

Maybe the Braves will field better teams for Gwinnett. They didn’t exactly load Richmond with a lot of talent. The Braves were pretty content with giving a few prospects a place to play. The class of the league is in Durham, all those Tampa prospects waiting to bust out.

JB… The Braves have been in Richmond for 42 years… That is a long relationship. However, maybe it will be better for all concerned. The thing that gets me is the IL’s attitude that Richmond cannot pursue a replacement team until the Braves franchise has relocated in Gwinnett.

Richmond will put up a new stadium and move on. I am not blaming the Braves completely but they were less than honest in this whole thing.

    Gil,

42 years is a long time. I’m 27 and a lifelong Braves fan that grew up in ATL and I could NEVER fathom losing my team. I’m sorry you’re losing yours.

My mind goes to Boston when I think about teams moving. They had the Braves for 80+ years before they went to Milwaukee. That’s twice as long as the Atlanta Braves.

Not an impressive game tonight but 4 cuts to come and maybe a trade. Jair only gave up one run in 3.1 innings. not bad.

Gil, I think the reason that Richmond can’t look for a replacement team is because all the other teams are still under contract with other mlb franchises. It’d be kind of like approaching a player with another organization in his contract year to play for you next year. I think the word they use is “tampering”.

Don’t worry. You WILL have baseball in Richmond next year. You might get lucky and get a AA franchise (as you’ve reported as a rumor). More prospects there. As you know, AAA does have some prospects, but also a bunch of guys on the way down and insurance guys that aren’t nearly as exciting (in my opinion) to watch.

Chris, the reason given is just in case the Gwinnett stadium is not ready, the International League want to make sure the Braves have a place to play. I understand that but to say that representatives of Richmond cannot talk to other franchises is frustrating. The Eastern League is mentioned as a prominent candidate with Detroit’s AA team.

I know the Nationals would love to put a team in Richmond but there are no AAA franchises available.

My bet is there will be some independent league owner who makes a play for Richmond. The Richmond metro area is about 1.5 million of which about 5000 are baseball fans.

Gil… you must have heard this a thousand times, but I used to have 3 pinched nerves in my back. When it would “go out” it would literally floor me… or at least make me walk around like Groucho Marx for as much as a week.

My chiro at the time taught me a valuable relief therapy: lay flat on the floor with several pillows under your legs so that your knees are bent and all pressure if off your back. Place a heating pad on the spot and rest on that for 15 minutes. Immediately switch to a bag of crushed ice 15 minutes. Immediately repeat this, finishing with the ice. Have as few layers of material between your skin and the heat/ice for full effect.

The heat-ice-heat-ice forces the muscles to expand and contract to relieve the pressure on the nerve. The ice also reduced inflammation. This treatment did wonders. Could almost go dancing afterwards (and I don’t even dance… amazing how that works).

I’m blessed to have no back trouble for the last ten years other than the natural aches and pains of age and occasionally too much physical stuff, especially when bending long periods of time.

Good luck if you try it. Hope it works as well for you as it did for me.

    G’nite all.

Guy Hansen, the Richmond pitching coach has suggested putting the new stadium in Goochland County which is west of the city. It would be a big success and a smart move. Richmond is blessed with easy access to just about everywhere as long as you can drive.

He is right when he says no one wants to go downtown anymore. If people don’t feel safe, they are not going to go to the games.

JB: Correct you are. Thanks much for the correction. CL, if you get time, can you change “three-game sweep of the Dodgers” to “three-game sweep of the Astros” in the fourth graph of my lead? Thanks much for the fix, and thanks JB for the catch.

Now, the bench: AJC is speculating the bench is:

    Blanco as the fourth outfielder

    Prado as a backup infielder

    Miller as the backup catcher

    Gotay as a backup infielder

Pena as the other bench player.

Wren has not ruled out a deal tomorrow (rosters have to be finalized at midnight tomorrow night). We’ll see. I’m still very curious what they are going to do with Prado when Infante comes back off the DL. With both Borchard and Thorman going down to the minors, it would not surprise me at all to see a deal pulled off tomorrow, with either Prado or Pena being the one shipped out of here for a power-hitting backup first baseman.

Final pitching spot is Bennett or Carlyle. I’d be shocked if it’s not Bennett.

Ring, Resop and Boyer (who threw a lot of flat, fat fastballs — say that three times fast! — tonight but otherwise had a good spring) made the team.

    Still dominatin’….
I “TIVO’ed”(Actually its the hardrive that you can get with Dish network I used) 2 baseball tonights that ran over the last several days…then, so I could watch them in the living room,(That recorder is in the bedroom) I recorded them on a rewritable DVD and just played them now…one was a 90 minute show. The last 20 minutes or so were devoted to Bobby Knight and Digger Phelps(More on Bobby) Had no idea they were both such big baseball fans.
Knight has been going to spring training with Tony LaRussa since 1988! Supposedly, he is the guy that suggested to Tony back when McGuire was playing that they ought to have a hitter bat 9th, so McGuire would have 4 hitters in front of him….
Knight went on a fishing trip with Ted Williams in 2000. They went to Russia. They then showed a clip of Ted Williams talking about the trip, and how he thought Bobby Knight was just about the most interesting guy he ever met! Later on Knight said Ted Williams was offered a chance to play for the Yankees in 1961, but turned it down! Anyone ever hear that before???
Digger said he just can’t believe they will do away with the original Yankee stadium, saying something to the effect of, that’s the place where Yankee stadium used to be. Bravo for him mentioning that! It will be a sad day when they tear down the house that Ruth built….but, hey the new stadium will have many more luxury boxes, and box seats that will only set you back $2500 in ’09(Really!)
Digger said one of his biggest thrills was playing a round of golf with Joe DiMaggio. He asked him questions like what was the worst road trip, and he said playing a day game with the Red sox, leaving right after the game to get on the train, and getting to the park one hour before a game with the St. Louis Browns….Just fun stuff…and even though I am not a fan of College basketball, I have long hated Bobby Knight….but, if he likes baseball that much, he can’t be all bad! 😉

This is a note for Bob, Journalist, JJS and SJA, esteemed ones all. Anyone else reading this, and I know some will, this is the last time I’ll bring up this issue on the blog. The reason I’m not emailing it and posting is because I believe it’s important to say these things in the same public square it started.

Bear with me for a moment here. This is not a sermon or a lecture (just a tad long as is my habit… and my current mood).

Has anyone here ever gotten perturbed and said or done or wrote something that, at the time and under the circumstances, you felt completely justified in saying or doing… but was wrong anyway? Of course you have. So have I. That’s largely what this is about.

Right or wrong, justified or not, I’m feeling regretful of such these days. Whether recent ‘bad stuff’ on the blog was caused by fundamental differences, misunderstandings or replies to provocations, it really doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Life is too short for anything but joy, good will and peace. Whether anything I’ve said was justified or not does not matter any longer to me. I wish I could turn the clock back and erase things that were said by myself and by others… but of course that clock can’t be turned back.

There is something that I can do… apologize.

Journalist Jimmy Smith, Bob, Journalist and Southern JackAss, please accept my apologies for my part in airing our differences in a way that caused ill feelings. Fellow Braves and Stuff denizens, please accept my apologies for my part in the unpleasantness. If there is something I could say or settle or clarify through email, please do let me know. I believe each of you have mine.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what caused our ‘verbal jousts’ or our righteous indignation and it doesn’t matter who started any of it. All that matters is that Braves and Stuff remains an active, peaceable kingdom and that the good denizens… the good people, stay and contribute. That is what we all wanted when we, together, forged this new settlement out of the dense cyber-forest last December.

Bob, JJS and SJA, I know that you are all fine and good people. Your individual and collective intelligence and insights are needed here. Your humor is needed here. Your unique perspective and baseball knowledge is needed here. I miss those when you are not here. Ironically, we are more alike than any of us would know. From the time I began blogging a few years ago, you guys are three of my favorite denizens… I’ve said as much on several occasions. Perhaps our pride has slipped under each of our personal radars and had its way with us.

With all sincerity, I would rather leave the blog myself than have you gentlemen stay away because of our past differences. In all seriousness, I really mean that. This Lady’s blog needs you three more than it needs one… who happens to be an opinionated, verbose and at times overly prideful denizen. Don’t get me wrong… my self-criticism is not really intended to be lighthearted self deprecation for the purpose of being disarming or anything other than just saying that I’m aware of my own inclinations. After all these years, I’m usually able to check them at the door. Not to justify, but I seem share some of those traits with you guys and many who blog. That, and maybe an Alpha dog thing.

That said, I won’t promise to always sit back and take what I consider to be a snipe, a personal slight or repeated little digs. WW and I have fought like banshees but we somehow we both knew when it was done. We didn’t hold a grudge and would both feel stupid afterwards. Paladin and I butted heads early on… only to discover common interests, a great repore and friendship. No doubt that we three share an Alpha thing and are at times rough around the edges and too quick on the trigger but we’re good. I respect them.

I do promise to CL and the denizens to work out misunderstandings or contention in private emails when it becomes obvious that the matter is not easily settled with an appropriate, subtle warning or a swift (harmless) ‘elbow’. After all, it’s a peaceable kingdom but it’s not Pollyannaville. Folks get passionate and intentionally or unintentionally step on toes.

Here’s the thing: The Braves season is about to begin. We’ve had a great fall and winter of blogging together. Spring is upon us. Let’s all just please bury the hatchets, erase the chalkboards, put band-aid’s on the wounds if there are any, forgive our silly transgressions, mend the fences, build the fallen bridges, email if we need to and join together with all of our good civilized denizens… together… to celebrate the best blog in the universe and some good ol’ Braves baseball (and lot’sa good stuff too).

C’mon ladies and gents… it’s that time again! Let the good times roll. Let’s play ball. It’s Braves time!

You didn’t really think I’d end a post like that without a cool video did you?

Legal update: The preening pop-in-jay of a judge had not done his homework, so the motion on which the major part of out case rests, will not be ruled on until next week. Also, “presumption of innocence” and all that stuff sounds good in legal and Political Science books, but in reality, it is a myth. The State has the upper hand and the judiciary allows them to wield it. You have to prove, conclusively, your innocence.

Morning, all! Just got up and checked the sports page; not sure about a couple of the moves. I like that we’re keeping Pena; he’s earned it over the last couple of seasons. Not sure why he wasn’t the backup catcher last year. I do NOT like sending down Borchard and keeping Prado. What is Cox’s obsession with Prado? The guy his .300 every spring and is about as mediocre once the season starts as you can get. We’ve already got Gotay to back up the infield (and Pena to back up 1st); when Infante comes back we’ll have three backup infielders. Borchard is the power bat we’ve needed off the bench the last couple of years. I don’t get it. I also don’t like Blanco over Anderson; Blanco hasn’t done squat until this Spring and from what I saw down there the week I was watching he couldn’t carry Anderson’s jock defensively. Factor in probably a 3-1 stolen base ratio between the two and it’s a no-brainer to me. Must just be a bone to Terrence Moore.

I haven’t checked up on the overnights; who left the blog?

STOWE, Vt. (AP) – Bob Shannon is an avid hunter, a fishing guide and owns a tackle shop, but he sometimes struggles to get his own son out into Vermont’s woods and fields.

“He’ll be sitting there with the video games,” Shannon said of 9-year-old Alexander. “I finally had to lay down the law last summer: ‘If it’s a nice day, you’re outside.'”

Shannon’s challenge reflects a larger problem plaguing many state governments: Revenue from hunting and fishing license sales is plunging because of waning interest in the outdoors.

“We’re losing our rural culture,” said Steve Wright, a regional representative for the National Wildlife Federation. “There are so many distractions, and we’re not recruiting young people into hunting and fishing.”

Sales of Vermont hunting and fishing licenses have dropped more than 20 percent over the last 20 years, leaving the Fish and Wildlife Department pleading with lawmakers for extra funding.

    Other states report similar drop-offs:

_Arkansas hunting license sales dropped from about 345,000 in 1999 to about 319,000 in 2003.

_Pennsylvania sold about 946,000 hunting licenses in 2006, down from just over a million in 1999, and a peak of 1.3 million in 1981.

_Oregon had 100,000 fewer licensed anglers last year than in 1987, and 70,000 fewer licensed hunters.

_West Virginia sold 154,763 resident hunting permits in 2006, a 17 percent decrease from 1997.

Grinch, have you seen Borchard’s regular season numbers? Thor has a better career BA and SLG than he does. Plus, he’s almost able to play 1b, which Borchard can’t do.

As for Pena, he WAS the backup C before he got hurt. Salty got called up and did well enough for JS to realize that he might have an opportunity to move him for something the club needed. Once Pena was well enough to play, he was sent to Richmond to work on different defensive positions in order to become a more versatile player.

Howdy again. Chris, I tend to go with my eyes more than I do a stat sheet. I’ve watched them both play; no comparison. They look about equal in the batting cage and hustle the same way in practice, but in a real game (even a Spring one) Thor goes back to swinging out of his shoes while Borchard does exactly what he’s supposed to and Thorman won’t. Hit line drives to the gaps and knock it out only when they make a mistake. I know it’s a small sample, but my gut isn’t usually wrong. He’s ready to play, ready to take advice and ready to contribute. I’m not sure Thor will ever be. Shame, because he does look good in the cage; that’s what’s so frustrating. He’s like a white Andruw Jones with his hitting approach.

Teens Arrested in Va. Highway Gunfire
    Published: 3/29/08, 5:46 AM EDT
By LARRY O’DELL and DENA POTTER
CROZET, Va. (AP) – Authorities believe a pair of troublemaking teens were behind a series of random shootings in an area where memories of the Washington-area sniper shootings six years ago are still fresh.

Investigators on Friday charged Slade Allen Woodson, 19, of Afton, after authorities stormed a farm and fired at an unidentified man carrying a gun. Authorities also charged a 16-year-old from Crozet, whose name also was not released.

“Everyone can, I think, rest compared to the state that we were in overnight,” State Police Superintendent Steven Flaherty said at a news conference Friday in Charlottesville.

Investigators said they now believe the shootings that slightly injured two drivers were part of a long night of random gunfire in which the pair also shot at a credit union and a residence

They were seen driving a Gremlin which is reason to convict, IMO.

Christmas Stealer, I’m sure that many share your perception … it’ll be interesting … like Yogi has on occasion been quoted “it ain’t over” … me, I’m not sold on Kotsay … rather have Blanco and Anderson and still believe the keys are Bobby, Roger, and Terry … and I’m not yet impressed … but, we’re all still on the outside looking in.

I find the TV commentary interesting … “that pitch from Moss was not a bad pitch … it was 4-5 inches off the plate and the hitter just slapped it for a hit” … my words, but seems to me that’s called besting the pticher.

Braves win!!! I personally thought that Mike Hampton looked good … any report on Kelly Johnson?

Grinch, your closing comment/question prompted me to quickly scan the Blog and I believe most of the comments relative thereto are in response to Sir Guy’s 10:43 AM Note/Post/Apology to Jimmy, John and myself … which upon cursory examination, certainly appears sincere … and I it so consider. I admit to not understanding the motivation behind Lew’s comments.

Of the three being addressed, I can speak but for one … I don’t consider an apology to me to be necessary. To my knowledge, John is the only one who has “departed” and his leaving was not a result of past differences with Sir Guy … at least I can’t so imagine and don’t so believe.

Jimmy Smith is indeed special … a least to me … were it not for the offerings of the Ugandian Journalist, there would be no Bob, Journalist … well, at least I would have never become a regular on the AJC Beat Blog. He is a delight … always has been … I enjoy blogging with most everyone but my passion for blogging should be credited to him.

We aren’t always in agreement and we’re different in form but I always enjoy both his occasional emails and his posts … his posts more than those of any other, methinks. We all view each other, ourselves, and blogging differently … but I personally envy and appreciate bloggers who always remain in character and would hope that Jimmy would always remain jimmy.

While I question the marginal utility of further expositing my view, it is that our psyche and ethos are as unique as our DNA; as are perhaps our agendas, reasons for blogging … and for not. That is, we each are and have our own. The same can be said of our perceptions, methinks. I don’t know how to put it into words, and you can color me stupid, but I consider Bob McBrayer and “Bob Journalist” as two distinct albeit related entities … the same goes for John and “sja” … and each of you, … including Lew Hartman and “Lew” … that is to say I have different perceptions of the individual and that publicly presented. It’s certainly possible to me enjoy both while truly liking one and without universally liking the other … and, while not personally relevant, I suppose some could so do even without truly liking either.

for purposes of clarification, my view is that while most folks tend to be private, both their public and personal masks are, with rare exception, rather transparent … especially when there are cross references. Like Poe observed, it takes not much to unlock the code of those who indulge in posturing. Sure it’s troubling when we encounter exceptions … even Patton was appreciative of Rommel’s having written a book.

Bob-You fail to grasp my motivation? I’ll spell it out. I was responding to SG’s earlier post, that’s all. I’ve always been transparent over this entire situation (now situations?). I think everyone’s rationale for leaving the first blog was an overreaction- “He was mean to me. I think I’ll take my football and go home”. I’ve said it time and again. Way too much animosity was exposed for way too long (has it ever ended?) over something that was insensitive at best. I thought that was quite clear. Now, as SG points out, JJS has run off yet again-for whatever reason-still not quite sure, myself, as I gave up trying to figure out much of the dynamics here a week or two ago..

All I’m saying is that now I’m seeing a trend developing-run and do so as vocally as possible whenever someone tells you something you don’t want to hear. Quite honestly, I think it rather juvenile,as I have also said in the past.

As to why exactly you’re that concerned with whatever SG OR I said in this instance, is somewhat befuddling. I wasn’t referring to you, except in a most oblique and historic fashion. I just wish the whole thing would end once and for all. I’m quite tired of all these playground politics.

Lew… Did you and Grinch get an opportunity to see Chuck James while at ST or was it still too early for him? I noticed he is on the DL but I wonder if the Braves will send him to Mississippi to rehab or keep him in Florida. I can’t imagine him coming to Richmond because they play in so cold weather the early part of the season.

Lew, Salty, all … I believe I said that you could color me stupid … I certainly wasn’t meaning to be in any way argumentative … nor was I meaning to suggest that any of you intend or perceive any such difference.

If you consider that I in any way misspoke, then you have my sincere apologies for so doing … I was simply referring to my own thought processes, or at least that was my intent … for I do indeed consider “Bob Journalist” and myself to be two distinct but related entities … and certainly look at each of you in the same way … one when you are on stage before a broad audience, each with their different perceptions, and the other when you’re not.

It appears NaCly understood … the fact that I so consider them doesn’t mean that I find any significant material difference … WYSIWYG indeed … though I’m not sure that it is truly achievable or that it should necessarily be an objective. The transparency observation may have been convoluted but I don’t believe it’s possible to hide behind a mask … I have no real problem with “WYSIWYG” … especially with folks like Reasonable Voice, NaCly, and others … but, with a broad audience, what is seen is many different things, depending on who doing the seeing … oftentimes, none of which are the same as that seen by the one who’s doing the giving.

I would to think that of me as well as I really do try to be sincere and consistent … but since I way of knowing what each of you see, methinks it would be presumptive of me to so assert.

Of course, to me, Berigan’s a special case … someone without agenda who likes Lincolns, Charlie Chan, and Banacek … goodness, a young man who’s sincere; who can and does laugh at himself … it don’t get much better than that! FBG is his female counterpart … as close as you can get to “WYSIWYG” without reservation or exception, methinks.

How should I view TBS? I am grateful for the games I watched as a kid, which were oftentimes the only games available, and are wholly responsible for my Braves’ fanaticism, but resent the fact that TBS has dropped the Braves. Does one appreciate that they would never have become a Braves’ fan from 2500 miles away, or does one wish they could have rooted for the Giants and As? Does the joke that is Barry Bonds factor?

They forget that a high tide raises all ship. They want to squelch the competition in their back yard. They forget that there are only about 5 truly big markets. The rest simply fill the function of the Washington Generals of the Harlem Globe Trotter fame. Until MLB adopts true revenue sharing ala the NFL, the big markets will win championships as the rule, no the exception.

They pitched well even when they lost several starters last year. They should be better this year with Lastings Milledge, Wily Mo Pena(When healthy) , and Elijah Dukes (When Healthy) Hmm, lotsa ifs….but they still gave us more than we wanted last year. Marlins will still play competitive games with us. Pirates may be getter, Reds WILL be better. Who will we beat up on??? Two very important factors always come into play when determining a team’s competitiveness. One is the amount of cash they have available to spend. The second is that the owner is smart enough to stay out of the baseball operations and let the people he hired do their job.

Two of the dumbest owners reside in Washington and Baltimore. Snyder and Angelos think they own fantasy league teams and their teams suffer for it.

The man can hit; he’s the man I’d want up ahead of any other bench player with a man on second. Corky doesn’t pinch hit, while B.Mac can…Pena is a hit guy, not an OBP guy….these things equal value to me.

Camden Yards is a really special place. A real retro park, all they need is a railroad track running through it.

Nationals Park (has a nice clean sound about it does it not) Is a modern baseball only park. No brick, all glass and concrete but really nice fan venues and huge wide concourses. It has everything but parking. hey, it’s DC, do you think they could think of everything?

I think it is good to have a bit of verity in design. At least it matched everything else in Washington. Trust me, they are very big into glass and concrete. Not so much with brick.

Didn’t know DC was so big on Glass and concrete! But, the only time you see DC on TV, they show the usual suspects, if you know what I mean….I’ve been fairly close as an adult to DC,(Gaithersburg MD) but not in it since I was 5-6 years old.

Buster Olney and EY(Eric Young) BOTH picked the Braves to win the east!!! 😯 😯 😯 😯 A plague of locusts decended on Bristol, Connecticut, as ESPN never has anyone (Except for Orel Hershiser last year) say the Braves are the team to beat! And Lew would be happy, Steve Berthiaume mentioned Seth McClung and his 98 MPH heater!

Really funny to hear all this brave love, since the baseball tonight started late because of the Civil rights game between the Mets and Chi Sox(A true Civil rights game should have been played between the Dodgers and Indians, but what do I know?) and so I had an inning or so to skip with Joe Morgan, and someone else flapping their gums. They briefly talked about the AL east, and acted like it was between the Mets and Phillies only!!! 😡

Buster and EY, neither picked the Phillies, even for WC!! A bit surprising.

The new season begins in 11 hours and 12 minutes. It is one chock full of promise and expectation, a tangled web that begins its slow unravel tonight when Kelly Johnson steps into the box at the new ballpark in D.C. It’s a journey that starts now, and one we all hope ends with a ticker tape parade come the closing days of October.

Time to get it started, Braves Nation.

BAS: Thanks very much, dude. Hope things are well on the West Coast.

Finally, at long and blessed last, Opening Day has arrived.

What a match! Last night was a back and forth, left hook, right punch, ropa-dopa, dancing around the ring overnight match. Berigan got his punches in early and often, dancing like a butterfly, stinging like a, well, butterfly… left, right, left, right. It looked like The Berigan Bruiser would get an early knockout. A display of pure domination.

Then, Bay Area Steve showed his stuff and proved he doesn’t have a glass jaw… he came back strong and began to completely dominate. It was brutal. Punch, cover, move inside, bread basket blows… it seemed that The Bay Brawler had found a new life, repeatedly throwing his patented left coast hook and was on his way to taking The Berigan Bruiser out. Punch, counter punch, spins, dips, merciless pounding… The Brawler took over the match and was dominating. What a comeback. What a turnaround in the middle rounds. The tide had turned and Bruiser was faltering.

Just when it looked about over, Bruiser picked himself up off the mat, got his wind back, mustered all of his strength and launched a final rally to the end. It was a hard fought match. Both men dominated in different rounds, until the clock finally ran out, the bell rang, the Brawler, uh… fell asleep and The Berigan Bruiser got the TKO.

Dual overnight domination. That, my sports fans, was violent pillow fight match to the very end. Feathers were flyin’ everywhere.

When I ordered it they gave me free phone for a year (then it goes to $35-I WAS paying $85-90) AND the gave me the HD service for free AND knocked my cable bill down by another $13 a month for the entire package. So I’ve got free HD, a cheaper cable bill AND no phone bill for an entire year. Now that’s a deal. I’ll pay for the TV and still have a couple hundred bucks left over.

That is a good deal Lew. I have Comcast but ot that package. Must be a new thing. Now if we could just get HD to somehow filter the ESPN announcers so that Skip Caray would override the sound on Braves games…

Gil, I have the Sony Wega. Got it a few years ago and love it. It was one of, if not the best one out at the time, but now there are quite a few good HD flat screens on the market and more importantly, the cost has come way down. I understand Sony has a new version that is very good. Can’t remember the name of it.

Good afternoon Jersey… The bad weather looks to be trailing off to the south of us today. It is going to be pretty cool though. MLB is all about money… Why else would you play a night game in March?

I have been reading about the new park in DC… Looks like a very nice place. I hope the fans in DC appreciate it.

    Jersey Gil-How you doing, Dude?

Gil-I’ve got a Toshiba Regza and it is phenomenal. Even has a DVD player in it.

AS to the Highway robbery perpetuated by MLB-Part of the problem is that they now have legalized scalping with Stub Hub. Why in hell MLB actually sanctioned these people (you can access them directly from the ticket info on any MLB site) is totally beyond me. The prices are absurd (we paid almost $500 for four tickets to see the Braves play the Blue Jays in Toronto-granted they are dugout seats, but…..).

The ticket sellers set their price, Stub Hub adds a commission and then you pay for Fed Express shipping (no other choice). Like I said, this is nothing but legalized scalping, sanctioned by MLB so they can sell hot dogs, beer and memorabilia at games, rather than have seats that were prepaid, empty..

SG-He looked pretty good, but the first week or so of Spring Training won’t tell you that much. It was mainly pitching batting practice. The hitters took the coaches deep, but not so much with the regular starters. However, Frenchy did hit a moon shot off of Glavine-on the roof of the batting cage. I saw Andruw hit one further there, but this one was launched, nonetheless.

Steve-Were you able to see a bit of difference? I had not intended to do two until I got down there. Decided the first was not worthy of my abilities. The second, I believe is. Like I said, I may not win the artistic batting championship, but I’m closer to a .320 hitter than a .250 guy. Now if I could only borrow one of SG’s photo department stalwarts, I’d be good to go.

I’d rather not email either. But, I believe CL might prefer that we did; ’tis the only reason I suggested it.

My 4:02 was purely tongue-in-cheek. And I bet CL will know that, if she can find the time to read it.

I have no idea, but I’d guess that CL has more than two hundred hours invested into this thing. I think, but don’t know, that she’d appreciate some help. Mainly, it was a chance to make her read Pepsi again.

So, I’ve said all that to say this: I did reread the post, and don’t find it in bad taste. I must have different standards. But, I could be wrong; I’m wrong all the time.

If FBG, finds that something like that can be said (in good taste) to a Lady if it is “tongue in cheek” then I will make an apology on here and we will all push the refresh button. If she says that she does not find it in good taste, you will make an apology to CL. THEN, we will push the refresh button. And note that I say an apology to CL. Even though I try to make everything on here “about me”, you don’t owe ME anything.
