JEFFERSON, GA – I am a sports fan. Period. What is fan short for? Fan is short for fanatic. I am a sports fanatic. I’ll watch ’em all on TV: baseball, football, basketball, hockey, golf, tennis… You name it, I’ll watch it. (Except bowling. I can’t watch bowling on TV.) As the years have gathered behind me, and a wife and two kids have gathered around me, I have had to learn to balance what I want to watch with what the family wants to watch. What? College wrestling on ESPNU? Awesome! Oh, wait… the kids are watching Spongebob. That’s OK, though. Life is essentially about balance, and the more you invest in family, the less you invest in other things. It seems, though, that there is still one area where I manipulate the scales of balance in my favor. Your Atlanta Braves! Mrs. Raisins and the young’uns all know that at 7:10pm, I’m looking for the Braves on the dial.
When I was a mere pup, my family moved to the suburbs of the big city of Atlanta from rural south Georgia. My Dad’s friend hooked him up with a night job selling tickets at Atlanta Stadium (as it was known before 1976) during the Braves seasons. For a couple of years, every time the Braves had a promotion, I got stuff. Cool stuff. Trading cards, miniature bats, helmets, caps… I got ’em all. I can still picture Marty Perez, Sonny Jackson, Davey Johnson and others staring back at me as I marveled at the cool stuff I got. I had a Ralph Garr bike license plate that said “Beep, beep” on it with a picture of the Roadrunner wearing Garr’s baseball jersey. Totally cool. I got to go to some games, too. I loved it. I loved the Braves. That was a happy time.
Growing up, I watched alot of baseball on TV with my folks. Of course, you only had the CBS games on Saturday and Monday Night Baseball. Then came Ted Turner and his little cable station. Before long, The good Lord above had graced us with the Atlanta Braves all during the week. And you can bet that if the Braves were on the TV, my Dad had the game on. It was simply a given. We watched alot of Braves baseball on that old 21” set. Those are happy memories.
When I’d get home from school every day, I’d slide my old worn out mitt over my bike handlebar and bolt down the street to my buddy’s house. We’d go out in his back yard and toss the ball around for a while. I could imitate every pitcher’s throwing motion! I could look just like Carl Morton. I could look just like Knucksie, too. (I could even toss a knuckler; just couldn’t do it consistently.) Then I’d take my old yellowed wood bat, with the tape wrapped around the handle, and settle in to the batter’s box. I could stand and swing like every one of my beloved Braves. From the right side, I could look just like Jerry Royster. From the left side, I was Willie Montanez. That’s how I became a switch-hitter! I emulated every nuance of my favorite players that I had learned from watching them almost every night on WTBS. I can’t tell you one score from any one game, but I can still see Willie slap that mitt down when taking Jerry’s throw from third. That was so much fun!
After I left the nest, my Braves watching habits followed closely behind. Every time Joe Torre, Eddie Haas, Bobby Wine, Russ Nixon, Chuck Tanner or Bobby Cox led their charges to the field, I was watching when I could. And I still do. Every pitch that I can witness, every hit that I can see, every throw that I’m around for, every double-play that I can tune in… they all take me back to gripping that taped bat. They remind me of toeing the rubber and floating my knuckler to my pal. They remind me of slapping my mitt down at first base like Willie. They remind me of all the cool stuff my Dad would remember to bring home to me, even after a long day and a long night. They remind me of why I love the Braves. They remind me of why I love the game.
So at 7:10, make room. I still watch every time that I can. And I hurt just like everybody else when our boys stumbled to 2 straight losses to open this season. But that didn’t really change anything. You see, I still can’t tell you any of the scores from any of the games, but I can tell you that Yunel keeps that shoulder dug in low! Diaz bends his back, then really get his hands through the zone. KJ taps his toe just like Chipper. And Moylan can throw some heat from down under! I watch the games to see MY players on MY team that I love play MY game that I grew up playing. I don’t watch to revel in the wins or to fret over the losses. I watch for baseball. I watch for my Braves. I watch for the joy of the game.

While my passion has diminished in many areas, it remains high for the Braves and for posts like the one I just read … what a wonderful memory … magical!
I can relate to your “Except bowling. I can’t watch bowling on TV” … neither can I though I actively bowled for over 40 years … six for serious money … technology ruined the game, as it has many, methinks.
Speaking of stuff, it looks like we may sooner than later find out, perhaps more than maybe we’d like, about that of which this edition of our Braves is made. Regardless of how things turn out, it won’t change our memories or our current fanatical passion for them … now I ask you, is that reasonable or what?

Raisins, that was truly outstanding! Memories like those are definitely to be cherished for a lifetime. I hope that you are encouraging your children to learn about baseball. My daughter doesn’t appreciate it, but my son, who plays, certainly does. His attention span only allows him to watch a few innings at a time but I always take time to try to explain what just happened, good or bad. It’s my hope that he’ll develop as deep a love of the game as I, and obviously you have. Bravo!

I am pretty sure the game will be postponed tomorrow night but who knows, MLB is just as likely to start the game at 10 PM Denver time and the Braves will come dragging butt into DC.

Mr. Baseball Burgee, that was a heartfelt, personal and very good post . You’ve captured the essence of growing up baseball. It’s a family thing for many of us… most, if not all I would imagine. I can relate to many of your experiences (except the switch hitting… no can do). Felt lots of “closenesses” there in your story. Thanks for taking us back in your time machine. Was a fun and good trip.

I take no pleasure in what is happening to Andruw in LA. I don’t blame Torre and applaud what he is trying to do. But, Andruw was one of my favorites and I will always wish him the best. Hopefully, he will finally see the light(that you can’t pull EVERYTHING)and get his mojo back. Not against the Braves, of course.

pissedby this, and it has nothing to do with it being Schafer. This is baseball’s version of McCarthyism…and patently wrong.Yep, I’m linking this to my comments last night, because the products were bandied over the airwaves for years. But that’s only part of it!
How the bloody heck can baseball go for years ignoring what was ‘hiding in plain sight’, yet now revert to ‘hearsay’ as all the evidence it needs? What a pile of manure. Give credit where credit is due; Shafer manned up…that’s a hell of lot more than baseball, and other professional sports leadership has done. Hell no, (pardon my French), they made $$ hand over fist, because ignoring was profitable. 😯 🙄
Please do not infer I accept steroids, especially in the past few years and definitely going forward. However, I don’t like witch hunts, and particularly dislike seeing the young players, who followed supposed ‘models’ paths in getting to their goals. Doesn’t justify, but as Grinch correctly cited, if the higher ups don’t care, sooner or later you must level the playing field yourself.

Also…(as I catch my second wind)…Shafer is the only ‘hearsay’ out there? No MLB players have skeletons in the closet? 😕 I seriously doubt it…no, they’re not chasing an MLB player as no one making millions/year is going to allow ‘hearsay’ as evidence to prevent him from being paid…the lawsuit would fly in a New York minute.

Paladin, I don’t know what you mean. It must ALWAYS be safety first. Absolutely no excuses for putting anything ahead of it. But! The airlines nowadays do.
One of the first things they did when times got tough was to dismantle their own (superb) maintenance departments and “outsource” them to whatever backyard outfit turned in the lowest bid.
The FAA assigns inspectors to each airline. These inspectors then become guests on every dinner party, golf outing, deep sea fishing expedition, you-name-it that the officers and BOD can devise.
Thankfully, the FAA also has a “white glove inspection” team that shows up on the property unannounced and has authority to go anywhere, inspect anything. Sometimes someone in an office will tip off the resident inspector beforehand, but not very often. LOVED those surprise inspections!
I was so fortunate to have worked for a company that actually DID put safety first. Customer service was an actual, real priority but nothing surpasssed safety. Then in 1987, Useless Air bought it out and determinedly set about to destroy it. And it did.

Klobber…read this…makes things even more questionable, especially the part about minor league players not having union representation behind them…they’re easy prey! What the true story is, who knows…but a kid is being trampled upon.
One thing’s for sure, the Braves resolutely must be behind him. On the one hand, it’s fine for them to support the suspension, for the integrity of the game (going forward!); however, they can’t justify signing a Spezio (which I have no problem with…he knows the conditions) while throwing Shafer ‘under the bus’…not that they are…but? 😕

CL; I totally agree with all you say. My point yesterday is that, in this case, we are not dealing with a safety of flight issue; this is, I got caught i.e., letting Southwest get by flying aircraft with skin cracks, so I am now going to ground an entire fleet because of the distance between the wire ties, to show how thorough we are. THAT doesn’t make sense to me.

Jordan Shaefer must have admitted to doing it or trying to buy it or something like that. He won’t fight it. Wouldn’t be prudent. He’d surely be blacklisted by the inept MLB powers that be.
I’m not saying I think he’s innocent of anything… or guilty either. The whole thing just wreaks of MLB corruption, greed and stupidity.

On flight safety: It ain’t the “why” that is the problem with so many planes being grounded and passengers stranded all at once.
It’s about “how” it was done.

OK – I see – and I agree with both of you. Going through the motions is simply wasting time and effort.
At one point, the safety group that I was on did a survey of every the flight attendant jumpseats on every type commercial aircraft flying. We found: jumpseats that had no seat belts; jumpseats that were located in closets; jumpseats that were located in the restrooms (don’t touch that one!); jumpseats attached to non-load bearing walls secured by only one bolt; frayed and unusuable seat belts – just to name a few. Photographed, documented injuries, etc. Made the entire presentation to the FAA. They were “appalled”. Asked when they were going to take corrective action: a blank look and an embarrassed “We’re not.” You would hardly believe what had to be done to actually get these basic issues corrected.
I spent my entire professional life dealing with safety issues. Some companies only had to have it brought to their attention and it was done. Others used the ‘cat response’: cover it up and walk off.

My question is, how long have the airlines had to make this inspections prior to the current action? I would suspect it has been a while and the airlines have just chosen to ignore the directive. I will refrain from further comment as it would just degenerate into another diatribe about corporate greed…. But, You Know!…
And oh by the way… US Air is absolutely the worse airline I have ever flown with. I will take Grayhound rather than fly with them…. And I am no fan of taking the bus…

Maybe Al Gore wanted the planes grounded. Just an inconvenient ploof… gone. Since it’s happened, the earth has already cooled. Just look at Colorado. Amazing how quick things happen when we think carbon credits. American Airlines has just earned many carbon credits. Maybe they can cash those in to offset customer loss.

The more I hear about this Shaffer issue, the more it stinks like last week’s fish. He can’t talk about it? I would think that the Braves would want him to make a public statement and apologize for his actions. Something tells me that there is much more to this story than we’re hearing about.
I have to say that two days ago when I first heard this news. I was extremely disappointed in him. But the more I read, hear, etc., I find myself in his corner.

Gil…good point…maybe this is the sentencing, of sorts. Rather like an OSHA inspection…you have to show progress…talk isn’t progress; scheduling isn’t progress; accomplishing is progress. Perhaps the FAA had mandated a timeline and level of progress by such and such a date, and AMR chose to ignore it…and thus the piper collects! And…that may be why no other airlines are being heard from…yet…or never.

Having worked for a company that was a safety fanatic.. We had weekly safety audits. Most every violation was minor but the 100 years of experience predicted that every rise in the “safety index” predicted an injury.
I am sure Carolina Lady will confirm that nearly every air crash other than those caused by sabotage has usually been as a result of catastrophic failure due to cascading events that in themselves were very minor.

On Shaffer…. He has little choice but to keep quite. There is not a single attorney worth his salt that would advise him to stay mum on the issue. The media will try to use his silence against him as somehow indicating his guilt but the he is following the best advice.
He has no protection from the Union as he is not on the 40 man roster. He can only rely on his own legal team.
Are the allegations true? Possibly but the real proof will come when he returns to baseball. Are all those numbers he has put up artificial or real? Time will tell.

CL; I am a graduate of the Aviation Safety and Aircraft Accident Investigation course at the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, Ca. I say this only to show, I hope, that I am not a “kick the tire, and light the fire” type…unless I’m flying alone. 😛 I almost took a job with the FAA after I retired from the military, but I didn’t like the way they operate. They should be totally autonomous(like the Fed. Reserve)instead of the lap dogs that they are. Our “in house” safety organization was much better as apparently yours was too.

Yes Mr. P, I would say that in order for regulatory agencies to be effective, they have to be free of political influence and be able to do their job without fear of reprisals.
It is human nature to fall prey to the temptations of big money. All those perks are hard to pass up and even harder to give up.

I worked in Air Safety and Accident Investigation for many years, on leave from the airline, working with the FAA and NTSB. You’re absolutely right in saying it is rarely ONE thing that causes an accident, but is usually a snowball effect that results in a crash.
Remember the L1011 that went down in the Everglades? A lightbulb giving incorrect information caused the flight crew to become focused on defining and solving that problem (is it real or not?). The flight controls were set on auto; the captain hung his mike on the yoke and turned to watch the F/O and engineer doing their investigations. Did not notice that the weight of the mike and its cord has just slightly jostled the yoke and the aircraft was making was shallow descending turns. Crashed and killed all aboard. Started with a $.25 lightbulb.

Flight safety? No problem. Very few rules to remember: Always eat well before taking off but don’t overeat… can cause wing stress. Cheeseburgers are a very good pre-flight food. Other than that, while flying: never get anywhere near frogs, sticky paper, traps or fans. Oh, and do not get distracted by those cute little blossoms while cruising around.
No biggie. It’s easy. Just, uh… fly. What’s the big fuss about anyway? Humans… sheesh.

FBG: Yes, I have Windstream. For the most part, it has been pretty reliable. This week, different story. I have been dealing with “Achmed”, or whomever, in customer service. They are very friendly, but a bit frustrating as communicating ideas is sometimes a challenge. I finally spoke with an American this morning, who “noticed quite a few disconnections” recently. FBG… Likely, your best bet would be an air card from a local cellular provider. It is about the same speed as the satellite. Unlimited airtime is about the same cost as cable and cheaper than satellite. Of course, you would have to find cell service that covered you.

I know they have Verizon there, Gil, & that’s what Mom has for her laptop. Our cells are on Alltel now, which they don’t seem to have in that area, but we get service at the house. Even though it feels like we’re out in the mountains, we are only a couple minutes outside of Clayton. ( I gotta get y’all a picture of the house & our view.)

Well, needless to say, I didn’t get to go to the Richmond game today as planned. I will not go into all the details but it involves the utility crew digging in the cemetery which is located on my property and digging up at least one grave, despite my advising them not to gig here. My guess is most of the crew is half way to Mexico by now. My wife is being interviewed by the local sheriff so I guess they will have to play without our support today.
One thing for sure, somebody is going to have a whole lot more work doing it over than if they had done it right the first time.

Berigan can’t eat right now! 😦 Have a CT scan on my Belly at 4 pm. They have stuck cameras up and down where they can…but other than finding I have acid reflux issues, they don’t know why my stomach bothers me so much(Well, Gall bladder yanked out a few years back helped and no doubt made stomach worse)

The cemetery dates back to the civil war. An old civil war hospital was located here on the site. When I first moved here, it was grown up and weedy but I worked like a dog to restore it and then maintain it. It is not like it is a mystery site. It is located on county maps. It is just many graves are unmarked but not all are. There are several head stones in place.
The county has a right of way on the edge of my property but I told the project engineer several times he needed to have someone come out and identify the graves before they dug in the area. Did they listen??? NOOOOO! Now they are going to have to shift through a land fill as I found part of a skull where they had dug. It’s a smell of a hess….

Gil, that was good of you to honor the graves of soldiers like that. Are the headstones pointed at the top? We have a confederate cemetery and most headstones were designed with a pointed top. The idea was to keep union soldiers from using them as seats.
In design, form follows function. In this case, form followed war outcome possibilities and union troop behavior analysis.

Top of the afternoon, good people. Been crazy here this week; hopelessly behind on my reading. A few quick hits before running off to fry more fish (assuming SG will catch some):
— The snowout today is a chance to hit the reset button for this team … again (sigh). Absolutely ugly game last night.
— Chuck James was NOT ready to start last night, and said as much after the game. No way Bobby should have ran a fly-ball pitcher who wasn’t ready out there in that ballpark against that lineup. No way in you-know-where. Why Bennett didn’t start is beyond me (and Bennett looked a heckuva lot better than Chuckie once he got to toe the slab).
— It’s STILL so early. I’m not worried. The line between 3-6 and 7-2 is awfully thin. I agree with Bobby; this is a good team and them being in every game is a sign of that. Just need to make plays when they count.
— The schedule makers should be dragged out back and whipped. The one game in D.C., then back home for the home opener. Then, the longest road trip of the season in the SECOND week of the season. Good grief. Just get through the next week and go from there.
— Look at it this way: When the trip is over, the Braves will have 76 home games and 71 road games left. Might night sound like a lot, but believe me, it is.
— Why in the world did baseball wait until less than three hours before the first pitch to call the game, when it started snowing heavily and sticking in the middle of the night?

I’m scratching my head over this one. I have been and still am, to a certain degree, a defender of Bobby Cox. He does some things sometimes that make me go “Hmmm”, but he’s earned a certain degree of benefit of the doubt. Chuckie never shoulda been called up to pitch last night. #1, he’s a notoriuous fly ball pitcher making his first start of the year, coming off an injury, at Coors Field. #2, Chuckie now admits he wasn’t ready. #3, they DL’d the closer to bring up a starter when they already have Bennett in the ‘pen. NOW, they call up Campillo. I truly cannot figure Bobby’s ‘pen moves thus far… 😐 Like I said, I’m a Bobby Cox guy. He’s just acting very un-Bobby like so far.
FBG: I have Verizon wireless, and I get very good service all over North Georgia. I recommend it when you make the Rabun move.

Thanks, VOR. There is a Verizon store in Clayton so I know we can use them. No Alltel ‘though we get good cell service there. There’s one “dead” spot on our road at the bottom of the hill but amazingly we’ve gotten service even when out in the back of beyond.

Jorge Campillo Hidalgo (born on August 10, 1978 in Tijuana, Mexico) is a right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who pitches in the Atlanta Braves organization. Campillo was signed as an undrafed free agent by the Atlanta Braves on February 14, 1996. Campillo was released by the Braves after the 1996 season and signed with a team in the Mexican Pacific League. The Mariners acquired his rights and signed him on March 26, 2005.
He made his Major League debut in 2005 with the Seattle Mariners, playing in two games during the season. After leaving a game in 2005 with an injury, Campillo required Tommy John surgery and subsequently missed most of the 2006 season. After rehabbing, Campillo made a rocky first post-surgery appearance with the Mariners in late 2006, after the team purchased his contract from AAA Tacoma. He became a free agent after the 2006 season, but was resigned to a minor league contract by the Mariners.
Campillo played Winter Ball prior to the 2007 season, when he very successfully headlined the AAA Tacoma Rainiers’ starting rotation. His recovery complete, Campillo led the Pacific Coast League in ERA. After the end of the minor league season, he was recalled to Seattle, where Campillo made several successful appearances out of the Mariner bullpen.
Campillo became a free agent after the season. On December 17, 2007, Campillo signed with the Atlanta Braves to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training.
Although not a high velocity pitcher, Campillo has good location and effectively mixes his pitches. As a line drive/flyball pitcher, he is seemingly more effective in spacious parks.

I want to ask an innocent question. I know, I know, me and innocent in the same sentence?! But, if Schafer was in the Muts system, would you feel so strongly? Isn’t there some “homeboy” sentiment involved? I agree that it is being blown out of proportion, but Schafer picked the wrong time to “screw the pooch”(Gus Grissom’s favorite saying). In Physics there is a law that says for each action there is an equal and opposite reaction. However, that’s physics. With baseball and politics now melded, for each action there is going to be a multi-faceted overreaction. Schafer is going to have to live with the result, for now, and you are too.

Islamic “Demonstration of Peace’ march in the streets of London … Should be front and center on CNN, NBC, etc. Wonder why not?? … probably because it occurred in February, 2006 … based on what I read, there was no “Demonstration of Peace march” … rather a demonstration against Danish cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad.
There’s no excuse for the radical Islamic behavior … I haven’t seen the cartoons but imagine them such that the Danes should have expected the response, so their behavior was probably inexcusable as well … methinks the problem with “absolute rights” is that the requirement of acting responsibly is missing.
The better question may well be “why are the photos again being circulated at this time?” … there are many possibilities.

Campillo was slated to start in Richmond today…. Morton took his spot. Richmond won today by the way 2-1.
As for the cemetery, only the family (not mine) graves were marked. The county administrator as well as the medical examiner plus the TV News folks pus….well, you get the idea… There were lots of folks apologizing… I’m thinking to myself, I am not the one you folks need to apologize to.
My property in in the middle of the left flank for Richard Lee’s (Not Robert) troops during the seven days battle. I have cannon battlements that mark the northeast corner of my property and my wife has found several artifacts (Cartridge belt buckles and mini balls) when relic hunting around the house.
Anyway, the neighbors have told me there were couple of dozen soldiers buried in the cemetery as well. Regardless, I had taken responsibility for the upkeep of the area and the wife had placed a stone bench on the edge of the grave sites and keeps flowers on the graves.
It is tough trying to protect history from development but I do the best I can. If anyone is interested, look up Polegreen Church or the seven days battle for reference.
Now, I am a southerner, born and bred but I also respect the Union. I have relatives that fought on both sides. What I do know is we all need to respect history and realize a lot of brave Americans fought and died for stupid reasons. Generally speaking, if those that fight in wars were the ones to decide if a war needed to be fought, their would be fewer wars.

Noah’s Ark, an exotic animal rescue center in Locust Grove, is used to taking in unusual animals. But they aren’t commonly found grazing along I-75 after falling off a truck.
A call came in Tuesday morning that a baby zebra was seen eating grass near exit 201 on the busy interstate, about 10 miles from the Henry County center, and staff members headed out to pick up the little striped guy.
The zebra appeared fine from a distance, but when rescuers got close they found the young male was severely injured. Their vet said he probably fell from a truck or trailer and then was hit by another vehicle.
The group, which takes in homeless animals and children and has more than 1,000 animals at its center — including lions, tigers and bison — called the College of Veterinary Medicine at Auburn University and made arrangements to have the zebra examined.
“The police kept referring to him as evidence, so we decided to call him Evidence,” said Diane Smith, assistant to the director at Noah’s Ark, which is about 30 miles south of Atlanta. “He’s going to have a permanent home with us.”
Smith said the Auburn vets decided Evidence, estimated to be two to three months old, needed surgery to survive. His pelvis was crushed, and he had nerve damage and a severed urethra, which had to be rerouted.
“The laceration on his rear was about 10 inches across,” said Dr. Huichu Lin, the school’s equine section chief.
Lin acknowledged the Auburn vets don’t see a lot of zebras, so “we treated him like a horse.” She said in addition to the pelvic fracture, the 225-pound baby also had a number of soft tissue and muscle injuries.
Evidence underwent surgery Wednesday morning, and by Thursday he was walking around and eating, which Lin said was a very good sign. Still, he has a long recovery ahead, she said.
“Given the severity of his injuries, we expect to keep him for one to two weeks,” Lin said.
Once released, the baby will return to Noah’s Ark, which not only houses more than 1,000 homeless animals, but also is a group home for up to 24 children, many of them also abused and abandoned. The center gets some grants and state money for the children, but the vast majority of its income comes from donations and fundraisers.
Officials at the veterinary school estimated the surgery will cost at least $5,000, with additional costs for followup care. Although Noah’s Ark officials didn’t have the money, they told the vets to go operate to save Evidence. Now they hope donations will cover the cost.
“We’re depending on the people who love animals to help us with this,” Smith said. “He just has such a tremendous will to live, we couldn’t give up on him.”

Greetings everyone. 😡 No CT scan today. Something about needing to be pre…pre…pre somethin’ from the Insurance company first! 😡 😡 No one bleeping told me this! They had me talk to my Doc’s office and they said my insurance company needs 48 hours for whatever this stupid thing is called(Dad is talking loud on the phone 3 feet from me, messing with my head! 😉 ) I needed a new date before the pre-whatever can go forward. The receptionist said this wasn’t true! She then tells me to go outside their offices and use a black phone to call scheduling to make a new appointment. Long dull story short, they tell me this time I will need to be there 2 hours early to drink contrast….which means I wouldn’t have been able to have the CT scan today, after all!
Nothing like wasting the whole afternoon to put a smile on one’s face! 😕

I used to love when Jimmy would take a story about a dead wrestler, a dead animal at the zoo, a dead whatever at the aquarium, chipper’s toes and bobby’s you know whats and somehow combine them all into three weeks of hilarious madhouse delirium of the highest intelligence. CL, that is indeed a very good place for animals and, even more importantly, the abused and neglected kids that live there. I know two kids that were placed there after we removed them from really bad home situations and it was a wonderful program for those children. Wish there were more places like it. Why doesn’t MLB just release whatever info they have on Schafer? What is the deal with the secrecy? Transparency is the key. It does not matter what the forum is, Without transparency, people are left with serious doubts as to how just or legit the accusation and the punishment is.

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and PUBLIC TRIAL, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.
I know MLB is different than the government and are not held to the same due process standards but there was a fundamental reason why the founding fathers made sure that a public trial was a guarantee. It benefits the accused and the court system if there is transparency. If it is transparent, there can be peace of mind from the public in the laws and the process and the verdict and the punishment. Without it, no one believes in it. Clandestine affairs leave more suspicion than anything.
The JFK conspiracies would not be so numerous if they had just trusted the public to know everything the government knew from the very beginning. I don’t think this country has ever been the same since. People love to talk about the loss of innocence and all that but I think a big part of it was that the people lost faith in their government. If the government had nothing to hide and it was just stupid Oswald, then what the hell was up with all the secrecy?
The same is applicable to MLB. They need a better system of due process and transparency in how they handle the PED allegations. Without it, too many are suspicious and don’t believe in the justice and fairness and legitimacy of the investigation, allegation, prosecution and eventual punishment.

Braveheart… It is not the same and you know it. This is about a violation of rules in the work place and because he has no union to protect him he has little choice but to accept the suspension or quit.
There was another kid in the Braves organization suspended for 60 games last year because he did not report his inhaler and tested positive. I think he was at Myrtle Beach.
Ii hope he makes good use of that pitching machine at his home in Florida. Meanwhile, a dozen other kids will be trying to pass him on the depth chart.

The problem with the reference though is that Eddie is talking about how his mother had to settle for a man who really wasn’t good enough because she did hot have enough self esteem to believe she could find a better man. Gil, I know it’s not the same. I just think it would be more fair to Jordan, MLB, and the public if everyone knew the details about the investigation, the allegation, the prosecution so that everyone could understand the whys of the punishment. Without the union protecting him, he is screwed and does not get any kind of due process to defend himself. I think everyone is for getting rid of PEDs and roids but I think people are also stepping back now and saying that we need to know it is being done the right way and not just in a Salem witch hunt, McCarthyism kind of way. Or at least I hope most people are looking at it that way. This kid now has a scarlet HGH permanently emblazoned on his chest and no one really understands why. That’s bothersome.

Salty, yes… we’re missing good denizens but, you know… we have good ones right here. Thing is, the denizens that know of Braves and Stuff remember how to return. I hope they do… each and every one. Even though we miss quite a few that have been away for one reason or another, in Savannah we don’t make a habit of going to a party night after night and repeatedly pining over who’s not there. Once or twice is fine. More often wouldn’t be polite to the party host or the guests. Maybe that’s just me.
But, to each their own. It is a free blog for free speech and free music and free thinking and free stuff all around. We can say most anything for whatever reason we wish and do whatever floats our boats. Stay, leave, return, whatever… works for me.

Savannah, I wouldn’t say I’m pining after the guy night after night. I do miss the guy. I like the people right here as well. I don’t think it is impolite to the people here or to the blog host to express that I wish Jimmy was still here. I know he reads it. I also know he is a very proud man and maybe too sensitive and principled because of it. I dunno. Maybe I’m missing something deeper that went on behind the scenes because from what I have seen publicly I’m just not understanding any of the acrimony either way.
I’ll kick someone out of my house if they are ticking me off and tell them not to let the door hit ’em on the buttocks on the way out but I’m not too proud to beg someone to come back into my house if they are willing to be not too proud to come back. If someone leaves my life, I’m the type that wants to make sure I do everything I can to bring ’em back in. If it doesn’t work, then so be it but at least I know I tried and they know how I feel. That’s the last thing I’ll say about him since the mere mention of his name seems to …….. I dunno. Very strange. Didn’t realize he had become that taboo of a subject.

James Baldwin is former major league pitcher who now serves as pitching coach for prep alma mater, Pinecrest High School.
Former major league baseball pitcher James Baldwin stood behind the home plate screen and soaked in the action on Tuesday at Ashley High School.
He had more than a passing interest in the Cape Fear Yacht Sales Tournament. A spectator at that moment, he was waiting for the third game of the day to end.
Baldwin, at age 36, is in his second season as pitching coach for his alma mater, Pinecrest.
“I wanted to come back and give the guys some of the knowledge I learned throughout my career,” Baldwin said.
He was a fourth-round pick of the Chicago White Sox in 1990 and reached the big leagues at age 23 in 1995.
He played 11 seasons in the majors – the last for the Baltimore Orioles in 2005.
“It is good when you can come to the ballpark and teach the kids the game of baseball, something you love and can have fun with,” he said.
Baldwin’s son, James Baldwin III, is a sophomore pitcher and outfielder for the team. He says his son is further along than he was at a similar age.
As for himself, he says scouts discovered him, ironically, in a tournament similar to the one at Ashley. He says scouts came to see someone else and recommended him for the draft.
“That’s how I got recognized,” he said. “I tell these guys you always have to go out there and play the game hard because you never know who is going to be out there watching,” he said.
Baldwin obviously has not forgotten his roots. After compiling a 79-74 career record with a 5.01 ERA in the majors, he decided to give back to a program where he first earned fame.
“The players here are like little kids in a candy store,” he said. “They want the knowledge. They want to know, ‘How did you do it? What was it like?’ Just the stories you tell them makes it a lot of fun for me and for the kids.”
Baldwin’s best years were with the White Sox; between 1996-2001, he won 10 or more games each season.
“In my first few years, I was a little nervous because I let the names mess with my mind a little bit,” he said. “You look at the players you grew up watching as a kid and then, all of a sudden, you are playing with some of them and against some of them.”
Now he volunteers his services at the amateur level and seems content.
“When these guys come out here and get to the ballpark all they do is sit around and talk baseball,” he said. “This is what they do all year around – play baseball. So it is good to be a part of this.”

William, I think you missed my point, but that’s fine. No need for me to repeat it, but please don’t make more of my words than were intended. Since you left us a big pot of stew, I’ll address your concerns the best I can. It is important.
My post was simply stating the obvious, but not intending it to be more than what it was. No offense intended in my “advice”, it’s just that we don’t need unnecessary drama. That, and because repeated invitations do seem a bit unnecessary. Perhaps that’s just my opinion. We know each other and we all know who and what has come and gone and been said here… and there.
No person is a taboo subject here. There’s no acrimony either, at least I hope not. JJS has NOT been “kicked” out or asked to leave by anyone. Perhaps kicking a friend out of your house when you get ticked off works for you as does begging them back when you wish works for you, as your relate in your story, but that example isn’t indicative of any such behavior here. As always, your words are artfully constructed but methinks the premise was way off. Nothing like that has happened here and hopefully it won’t. Nor is it taboo to mention anyone’s name here… but you said that for effect, right?
C’mon man… you know what’s up. We’re family here… dysfunctional at times sure, but normally we’re a very collegial and fun bunch. JJS has his own reasons for not blogging lately. Maybe he’s still ticked at me because were were jabbing each other but it was all gentlemanly on both our parts. Maybe he’s taking a breather. Perhaps he’s busy with work… it happens, you know. Maybe he’s in Uganda fighting aids or in Canada rescuing seals or off on some other noble cause… or he could be just blogging elsewhere. Whatever. That’s all. Nothing needs to be overly complicated about it.
So trust me, I get it. You’ve said it repeatedly… you miss Jimmy. That’s great… nothing wrong with that at all. We all miss him. I’ve invited him back here myself privately through a mutual friend. My point to you earlier was very simply: I’m sure you guys can hook up by email if you are as sincere as you are endearing. But if there were another purpose for you and you’d rather make your point publicly for whatever reason, that’s fine too.
There are others that we miss here. They are not here for their own reasons. I wish they were all back, but no amount of asking will cause a reasonable person to stop what they’re doing or change their reasons for not being here just because they receive repeated invitations and impassioned pleas. They will return or not, based on their own priorities, desires and time availability. We’re all adults and we make our own choices. The only thing we can “do” to attract folks to a blog is to create sustained, interesting content that is worth reading and foster a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and speak the truth without being brutal. Truth is interesting and good, even if at times unpleasant. Maybe I’m wrong but it guides me.
If you believe that dropping by occasionally and repeating invitations will create a groundswell of emotion or bolster a grown man’s “pride, principles and sensitivity” as you say and inspires them to return to a place they left on their own, well, I don’t get that… but don’t let me stop you… that’s just swell by me. Perhaps your noble and endearing words and sincere gestures will persuade and you’ll achieve whatever outcome you seek. Hope so. That’s cool.

CL, good story there about James Baldwin. Kids really need the instruction and more importantly, they need the leadership by example that he seems to provide.

Hopefully the baton gets handed off to the next coach as the kids graduate through each level, and more reasons are taught and discovered for performance and behavior excellence. Once they are in whatever career they pursue, they’ll benefit from the fundamentals. If they make it to the Bigs and strike it rich beyond our imaginations and there is not a higher rung on the “helpful spectator” ladder, other noble and competitive motivations will need to sustain them. Good stuff.

Salty, my bad. I didn’t mean to jump your ish like that. That post sounded real jerklike from me. I actually rarely hear the lyrics myself. I marvel at people who are able to catch on to lyrics. I’m much more of a beat and sound of the voice kind of guy. Someone could be rapping or singing about killing me and if the singer had a good voice to go with a good beat, 95% of the time I would have no clue that he wanted to kill me. I would be tapping my feet and bopping my head to the beat while someone is singing about murdering me in the most medieval fashion possible.
For example, the only reason I know the Better Man lyrics is because my ex would play it all day everyday. At first I liked it because it was a cool song with a good beat and great voice. Never really listened to the lyrics too deeply. Then one day it dawned on me that my girlfriend keeps playing a song about a girl who settles for a man because she doesn’t have the self esteem to try get a better man. Kind of an unsettling song for your girlfriend to love. Makes you wonder what she thinks about you, doesn’t it? Well anyways, regardless of the history of the song, just looked it up and Better Man is the 6th most played song on my IPOD.

WW, that was just funny. Hey, mine may have been a deep tone but a friendly and sincere one, I assure you. But then, you are an admitted beat and voice guy so perhaps you missed that I didn’t want to kill you. 😉
Now, as far as music goes, I do try to keep up and always have. It’s impossible to stick with one genre all the time. Rap on the other hand is foreign to me. I’ve heard some that I really like… others I hate… and others I just can’t abide the lyrics. But it’s all good. From Beethoven to Zepp and Tull to Arcade Fire and Shins to Nirvana to Pearl Jam to George Jones and… well, you get the idea.
As far as age and music is concerned, all I can say is that I’m 39 and holding.

Like the old saying goes, “to make a friend we need to have both eyes open, to keep a friend we occasionally need to close one”… so it goes with music and lyrics. So many great rock songs that have a great sound but have lyrics that are either outdated, we can’t relate to (any more) or are just too “young” to enjoy. The questions and struggles and innocence and ideals and pain and uncertainty of youth that winds up in lyrics are hopefully outgrown with age and maturity.
But… I still listen to them if the beat is right, the attitude is right and the sound is good. Otherwise, all my rowdy friends still wouldn’t have settled down.

SG, these days, I can’t stand rap music. There are only a few acts I still like. For me, rap died when Biggie and Tupac got killed. Ever since then it has been Jay-Z, Outkast, and a bunch of lame brained scrubs I’m kinda in the transition period where I’m trying out a bunch of different stuff. I’m afraid though that like most people the best music I’ll ever hear in my life is the music of the first 25 or so years of my life. Let me go back in the day:

JB, sorry man… I keep meaning to check your site and leave a post to say hey but I keep struggling with the time working, blogging here, catching up on Braves news, feeding my addictions (all of the above plus music and other legal stuff) and sleep on occasion. Plus, my memory isn’t what it used to be.
Now, what was I talking about? Oh, uh… anyway, how is your blog going?
Hillbilly, are you hunting bottom land, swamp or ridges? With that flood water you should have luck unless they get nocturnal. I remember some great times out there before sunrise, snuggled next to a cypress knee, hoping a copperhead or rattlesnake wasn’t resting there, getting eaten alive by mosquitos and gnats in the pouring rain, mud all over the place… ahh, those were the days. 😉
Actually I loved every minute of that and deer hunting despite the occasional discomfort. It was not a hobby, it was an obsession. The fried wild bird and venison were fringe benefits to a good day.

Moylan is closing since Soriano is on the DL. That scares me, especially in one run games. I love the guy, he’s got a 1.93 ERA but he’s gotta get that hanging curve and changeup down and that sinker to sink. Leaving it up can mean a solo poke or a base-clearing knock.
Manny Acosta is also considered for a closing role. I’m not familiar enough with him (too lazy) to know what he’s got other than a 9.00 ERA (yikes) but that was due to one bad outing.
What’s the latest prognosis on Soriano? Still out until late April? Oh, mercy…
Do we need to proactively shop for a closer?

All I know is that some of the Braves, including Chipper?, said that at times in ST Moylan was unhittable. Maybe if he is brought in in the closers role he will bear down, and keep it down. Hope so.

I was just “lurking” across the street and somebody(for a change)made a good point, IMO. He said that BC runs too loose of a ship in ST and lets the veterans set the tempo. While it MAY work for them, it is a bad example for the younger guys who are still learning the ropes and their bodies. Consequently, the Braves come in to this season, with a real tough schedule, still trying to get “game/season ready”. I tend to agree.

Stuff: Prince William received his pilot wings after 4 whole months of “vigorous” training. It normally takes a UK pilot 3 to 4 years and a US pilot 2 to 3. I’m sure he is a nice bloke but I wouldn’t want him as my wingman and CERTAINLY not as my flight leader.

It is sad about Andruw Jones, or as sad as one can be for a multi-multi-millionaire that is mired in a hitting slump.
Last year I suggested on the ajc blog that Braves send Andruw and his wife home to Curacao around all-star break time for a two-week vacation. The boy needs to get away from his life and relax, get his family back in his mind, get some home cookin’ and some home cooked advice. Just chill. Forget baseball. Break the vicious cycle and such. Nothing’s better than than 1-0, well played game … berigan reminds me of the tired, worn old story of the young couple who got to the game late … last of the eighth … matching no hitters … the girl looked at the 0-0 scoreboard and exclaimed … no score, … good, we haven’t missed anything!
It’s told as a joke, but it happens … to some extent and in some form … many times every year. Perhaps the most exciting game I ever saw was a 1-0 extra inning game.
I don’t agree with our definition of a perfect game … were I a dominating pitcher and threw a no hitter … walking some as a result of pitching carefully … it would certainly be “perfect” when compared to one where nobody reached base as a result of 27 fantastic defensive plays.

Perhaps I somehow misunderstood the thrust, but I caught the tail end of some program on FOX, I think, early this evening … featuring an interview with some executive from Time Warner justifying their use of “Oh My God” OMG and the F-Bomb OMFG in promoting their “Gossip Girl” program … I know nothing of the program but understand the target audience is 18-35 year old females with a substantial teenage girl audience … and is shown in prime time.
The Time-Warner representative stood by his guns … said he, in essence … the target audience relates to such language and they wanted something provacative … he saw nothing wrong with it. However, that may just be my singular perception … and I could be confused … as I’m not thinking too clearly at the moment, having tripped and fallen earlier in the evening … harder than any fall that I can recall … possible minor concussion but no bleeding or broken bones … just a throbbing headache and sore from head to foot, … but it prevents my researching this.
If any of you are so inclined and can find it … and find my understanding to be correct and feel it appropriate, … it might be good to put something on the blog, at least as a heads-up for the parents of youngsters … it’s truly disturbing … made Carol sick to hear it and think about it.

I’ve received treatment … I have no idea as to the program content, but based on what I saw of the interview and the posturing taken relative to its promotion, I can well imagine … agree totally with you but the youngsters are a greater concern because of their limited plane of reference, making them more impressionable … something coveted advertisers, methinks.

Since there are some on this blog that regularly take things out of context or see them through a glass darkly, let me ‘splain something. I like a pitcher’s duel as much as anyone, if the pitchers are Johan Santana and John Smoltz, for instance. They are premium pitchers and are expected to perform well. I also enjoy any game that “my” pitcher does well(for instance Huddy’s masterpiece, last night)including those by Chuck James, et al. What BORES me is to see the Braves–back-to-back–make journeyman pitchers like Mark Redman and Matt Chico look like HOFers due to bad plate discipline and lack of patience. Now, if ANY 1 – 0 game is your cup of tea then sip it, slurp it or inject it; but don’t act as though that makes you more of a student of the game. ‘Nuff said, or over. Your choice.

Good morning denizens. It’s a the most beautiful morning of the year here on the coast. The breeze is my idea of what heaven would feel like… 68 degrees and just enough air movement combined with temp to feel refreshing. Like an air bath. Benjamin Franklin would surely be sitting out there au natural. John Adams would of course be embarrassed and disgusted by the sight.
I trust everyone rested well after a nice win last night. Hope you feel better this morning Bob. Concussions are not to be trifled… you know. And I could tell you were about to get on a roll. Sorry we missed that. You had it going sir.
Well, hope Chipper feels better too this morning. Could’a been a lot worse than a quad, so that’s a bit of a relief. My first thought was wondering what residual effect Colorado might have had on the guys, with little muscle tears in that cold, then exacerbated or flat out ripped the next time they were pushed in a game. Is there more stress on a body than going from second base to home on a single? Kotsay stretched another one out last night. That guy can track’em.
Gil, I found that game anything but boring. I think pitchers duels are the most intense games of all. Every single pitch is magnified. Sure, frustration sets in when our guys face an @ 5 run ERA pitcher that shouldn’t be dominating like he was, but that game was great. Even better when we win.
Now, the best 1 run game I’ve seen is hands down, without a doubt… game 6 in 1995 in Cleveland. Tommy Glavine pitched a masterpiece. It was the most critical pitchers duel of the decade. The outcome was kinda’ nice too. One David Justice pop was all he needed. Braves Nation needed more cushion though… for our nerves if nothing else. That, and Kenny Lofton seeming to come to bat every inning.
The Morris-Smoltz duel of 91 was my second vote for intense/close playoff or WS Braves games. Can’t help but still have a thorn in my side about the Hrbek-Gant umpire goof and the Lonnie base running hesitation… oh, I’ll drop it.
Now, on occasion, a not so tight game is preferred. When we really need to get a monkey off our backs, in a pennant race or in the playoffs. I’ll take going into the 9th with a 6 run lead anytime. It’s a different kind of enjoyment… those games. I’m much more of a ‘want to see a close, well played game’ purist when I’m watching teams other than the Braves. Guess it’s because I’m not nearly as emotionally invested.
Hopefully I won’t be a purist come October. A five game lead with 4 games to play before post season would be my idea of good fun.

Another classic game and series comes to mind… the 1988 NLCS. Dodgers vs. Athletics. If you remember, the Mets were heavily favored to take the NL that year, having beat up on Dodgers all season. I was a bit foggy on the details so Wiki has helped fill in the blanks here.
It was an intense seven games. I was glued to the set for every game that was available. Game 2 was rudely played late so we could hear Lloyd Bentsen tell Dan Quayle, “I knew Jack Kennedy, and you sir, are no Jack Kennedy”. I digress.
So many big names in that series: Darryl Strawberry; Dwight Gooden; David Cone; Lenny Dykstra… then the all-time classic: Kirk Gibson’s 12th inning, game-winning home run in game 4 was a crushing blow to the Mets. Gibson was a monster. Wonder if our Roger McDowell remembers that one? Ouch.
Orel Hershiser was flat-out amazing, pitching in 4 games, once in relief and then a complete game 7 vs. Ron Darling. Orel Hershiser has to be right at the top, if not the very top of all-time series pitching performances that year. Starting, relieving, dominating. His MVP was a no brainer.
Following that, the World Series vs. Athletics was another classic. Hershiser pitched himself another MVP. The most dramatic moment I’ll never forget was Kirk Gibson’s arm pumping home run. The man was hobbled to the point of barely walking, came to the plate and hit the all-time classic, fairy tale dinger off of Dennis Eckersley. Who can’t still picture that and see him fouling off pitches until the infamous “back door slider” was crushed. Kirk limping while rounding those bases was glorious.
Other than 1995 with our Braves, baseball does not get much better than that.

Now pitching duels… One of my all time favorites involved Greg Maddox vs the Cardinals. It has been so long ago now, I cannot remember the opposing pitcher or the date but it was during one of those times when winning was crucial and both pitchers were absolutely at the top of their game.

Braves did good today. Smoltzy toughed it out. Frenchy came alive, the bats woke up like a sleeping monster awakened by that pesky monkey on its back and things are starting to click. A sweep tomorrow and we’re really rolling.

Yes, it was a curious game today in some respects. I too wondered why Chipper was playing past the third inning. I was glad to see the Braves’ bats come to life but some of that was due to poor play in the field by the Nationals outfield. Kearns miscue in the first being very notable. I thought Matt Diaz’s heads up play on Millage’s imitation of Lonnie Smith was a back breaker. No way he should have stretched that floater into a double.
I thought Ohman did curry himself any favor with Cox with his poor relief performance in the seventh. When you are up 10 runs, you never should be walking people.
When the Braves play Washington is one of the few times I actually get to see them play on Saturday.

Matt Diaz did look good and the swing is really coming around. Heard on the radio during the delay that he just hated the cold in Colorado, effected his whole body, chapped his hands and such. I think all of our guys and the Rockies probably felt the same way. Glad nobody was injured in that frigid football weather.
The Nationals park is just fine so far. That’s a pretty funky outfield wall that traps balls underneath and could make for some pretty flukey freaky inside park home runs this year. Funky, freaky, flukey in the same sentence (blog first?).

Two items of stuff: An airplane crashed in Monrovia after the pilot reported a problem with the “transponder”. Hello! The transponder has nothing to do with the flyability of the aircraft. Is this another .25 light bulb crash?
Secondly, students from Randolph(used to be Randolph Macon)in VA are visiting the Chicken Ranch in Nevada for what purpose? The women there spread their legs (for money) for male customers. I’m sorry for my tell-it-like-it-is but it is. Is this something that will contribute to the education of students at one of the nations’ top female schools? I think not.

Got up this morning to find water all over the kitchen floor and soaked carpet in the hallway. Something in the Refrigerator or freezer has let loose. Been changing out wet towels all day.
This fridge (Whirlpool) was purchased in Dec 1979, has run all those years with only 2 very minor repairs. But, the seals are shot, the body is pitting, and I think its time has come.
Went to town and bought a new one to be delivered Wednesday. Will use a lot of towels between now and then. 😦

And I am not at all trying to take anything away from Murphy, one of my all time favorites. They BOTH belong in the hall, and it’s not likely either will be, anytime soon. Murphy, at his best a better hitter than Simmons, at least power wise. Of course, Murphy played at the launching pad, and Simmons in the old Busch before the fences were moved in. Only the Astrodome was worse for hitting homers.
But, you can see why I blab on about Simmons. Like Murphy, too many games played per year took there toll. 7 straight years of 150 or more games for Simmons, and as a catcher! Like Murphy, most of his career wasted on bad to mediocre teams.
A did you know, then I will shut up about this….for now! 😉 Did you know only one catcher drove in more RBI’s than Simmons??? Yogi Berra. That’s it.

Paladin, I hope your prediction does not come true. AJ was one of the truly great ones for this franchise. I would hate to see him have to stoop to that low level.
I’ve always been a proponent of athletes retiring a little too soon rather than a little (or lot) too late. Muhammad Ali was one of the greatest ever but to watch him in that last comeback was pathetic. Same could be said for Michael Jordan (Washington Wizards? Really?) and many, many others. Greed is a powerful force.

And Peter Gammons and Keith Oberman(Hey, he knows baseball, if nothing else) both think he should be in there. I think hanging around after he wasn’t an all-star hurt him….perhaps he wasn’t too friendly with the press??? I don’t know….all I know is that I heard broadcasters say he was really the best catcher the last few years Bench played, but Bench was the guy who at one time was the best all around catcher ever, so he was forever in his shadow….
His defense tanked, like it does for just about every catcher once they get in their early 30s'(Carter, Piazza, Javy, etc) Which makes you really respect the Bob Boone’s Fisks, and Rodriguez’s of the catching world….

Forget about his “numbers”, Dale Murphy is probably the most exemplary person to ever wear the uniform. Should that count? Well, it is the LACK of those qualities that is keeping Pete Rose and all his “numbers” out of the hall. Talk about convoluted reasoning and double(divided by 3)standards!

Gotta mess around with my taxes some more, but a few quick comments….
I don’t want to see the Mets finish higher than 4th this year….but I don’t want to see someone of Santana’s skills run out of town either….
I don’t want to see Andruw just go downhill from here on out either….but, get the feeling, like Thorman, they just won’t surrender to a hitting coach and say, what am I doing wrong??? Perhaps they have succeeded up to this point(They think) by not listening to hitting coaches…I don’t know.
I posted late last night that Andruw went 0-3 in a 11-1 Dodgers thrashing of the Padres. He’s now hitting .109!!!! Hell, with some practice, I’m sure bad back and all, I can hit that in the majors! Pitchers that swing like girls can do that!!!
He should talk to Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz(When he’s hitting again) about their approach. EVERYONE who watches games with Andruw, knows that he will swing at pitches outside, way outside. EVERY pitcher knows this, and exploits this. What is so hard to figure out for him?????

Howdy, all; lightning took out my cable a couple of nights ago and it’s only working intermittantly now. Don’t be offended if I don’t respond occasionally. Haven’t had time to go back through past posts, but I will say the criteria for entering the Hall is supposed to be about players that dominated their era. I don’t think there’s a player or sportswriter out there who won’t admit Murph dominated the entire decade of the 1980’s. His exclusion is an absolute travesty.
Also, ESPN’s power rankings have the Mets at no. 3!!!???!! and the Braves at no. 15. A 5-5 team with one good pitcher and half of a AAA lineup (the other half on the DL) at no. 3. Wow; what does that say about the rest of baseball, I wonder?

Bear again, I had the same reaction to the unnecessary and hurtful “tubbo” remarks. The man writes more like a fan-troll than a sports writer.
But still, AJ said what AJ said. That boy needs to look into the mirror… and I’m speaking metaphorically there. I’m not sure if he’s got the capacity for self awareness to improve much as a player. What we saw and got from Andruw as a Brave was pure, natural talent, love of the game and a playful innocence.
Whether it was the Gold Club, the mansion, the multiple cars or whatever “false idols” he has in his life, Andruw lost himself. He still has a natural talent but all the other stuff or even losing weight and taking BP twice a day won’t overcome his stubborn, lost mindset. Sad but true.
For a pro athlete… it’s not only sad but also fair.

Diaz looked today just like he did in Colorado. Mechanics. Notice when he gets off of his timed back stretch he gets flat-footed and pulls off the ball. When he does that his strike zone gets about 2 feet wider and 2 feet wider than normal. Hope he warms up again in Florida.

So did the Braves today, finish 2nd … another one one run game … “I just shouldn’t have swung at that pitch. I’ve got to hit the ball up the middle or go the other way. I tried to pull it” … well, you have to give young Brian credit … most wouldn’t admit to making a mistake, much less two on one pitch … but he got it right … besting the pitcher wins games … trying to pull when you should push, loses them … as does for consecutive two out walks.
Disappointing but nothing really unexpected … though Jorge was a pleasant surprise.

However Chris, the ratio of the two club memberships isn’t really surprising … the offensive objective of all position players is to get hits … while the pitcher’s objective is to best the hitter … with but one of the desirable outcomes being a strikeout … plus, the composition of the teams … position/pitching … would directionally suggest such a ratio, or so me thinks.
