ATHENS, GA – John Smoltz is rightfully regarded as one of the greatest postseason pitchers in the history of the game. Tom Glavine and Greg Maddux, on the other hand, are generally considered postseason disappointments. Overall, for their careers, Smoltz has been superior to Glavine and Maddux in the postseason. Below are their career postseason records:

Maddux was not only the best postseason pitcher on the Braves during the era of The Big Three but, from the 1995 NLCS until the 1999 World Series, Maddux put together the best consecutive string of 120 or more innings of any postseason pitcher in the history of the game. Mariano Rivera is currently at 117.3 innings and will jump to the top of this list once he surpasses 120 innings pitched in the postseason. Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Christy Mathewson and a few others had excellent runs that did not amount to 120 innings pitched prior to the dawn of ALCS, NLCS, ALDS and NLDS play. Greg Maddux, however, had the best string of 120 or more consecutive innings ever from a starting pitcher in the postseason.

Not many thugs in the NBA, either…at least football players have to perform year in and year out to keep their jobs. They don’t spent 5 years of a 6 year guaranteed contract snorting coke of various body parts of high-priced groupies in the back of their Bentley then play hard the last year in order to get another guaranteed gold strike.
Paladin, I’m thinkin’ this is a two year plan; he’s looking ahead at next year’s draft and getting everything BUT linemen in this one so that can be the sole focus next year. I admit to being shocked and dismayed at first that he didn’t go after the New England model, but then New England’s never had as many holes to fill. I’m still giving him the benefit of the doubt.

The guys he’s picking aren’t flashy, but if you look at their analysis every one of them is “hard-nosed and agressive.” That fits with the program.

I personally think the NFL should have a rule that bans all players who are arrested more than 10 times in a season … or at least prohibits them from playing for one series of downs in a game where their team is leading by more than two touchdowns.

Good post William Wallace. That’s quite a collection of stats and all-time pitching greats you’ve gathered to make a case for Maddux being the best post-season starter ever. Honestly, I wouldn’t have thought that. Candidly, I’m still not sure I do, even after looking at your numbers and tables.
It’s not that I don’t believe your stats or perspective… you’re very good at those. It has nothing to do with your accuracy or presentation but everything to do with my own inability to overlay all of the hard stats, process them, mix them and understand them to arrive at a clear, certain comparative determination. That and numbers always made my eyes glaze over.
Liked your use of multiple variables (over and above IP, ERA, W, L). They added critical and pertinent insight, but they also add to my wonder of other outcome causes and effects. Maybe just a case of give me an inch, I want a mile partly.
Anyway, I’m wondering out loud (so to speak) about things that don’t wind up in the record books of regular season much less post-season games… the sometimes intangible variables and unique circumstances, such as how many times a starter was used, such as Randy Johnson in the final days of the Seattle pennant run where he started, relieved, started and started again… before the first round of playoffs even began.
Intangibles such as how many days rest each starter had before making starts. How many pitchers were helped with wins due to go-ahead runs scored in the bottom of an inning after they departed the game. How physically fit the pitcher was, ala Curt Schilling’s ankle. Then, other variables include such as inclement weather, team errors, bad umpire calls (ala Marlins series with Eric Gregg)… and so forth, so on. Certainly our personal perceptions are flawed due to team/player bias or reflect the games we happened to watch, our memories have faded too, but stats are flawed as well.
Maybe there is a place between stats and perception that is most accurate. The stats help a lot… more than perceptions and memories to be sure.
My guess on the top five, if we were sitting in a bar placing a bet prior to your homework being available here would have been: Whitey Ford (my childhood hero), John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and a wild guess of Orel Hershiser at number 5)…. in that order. I don’t think Maddux would have been higher than three in my guesstimate. So much for guessing and betting. Bet I’d be buying the drinks about now.
Now, I’m glad that Maddux is at or right at the very top of the post-season list because I think he’s overall the best regular pitcher in the modern era of baseball… and along with Smoltz and Schilling because they are personal favorites and war horses. If some of the older guys like Christy Mathewson and Cy Young hadn’t been such superhumans in pitching several games in a row and such, I’d see Greg at the very top of an all-time list. But there I go again with the variables…
So WW, thanks for doing the good work and posting the good stats. Denizens, pardon my rambling so long on top of a good post… just such good food for thought and fond memories found there amongst the tables.

SG, I myself never believed Greg was a good postseason pitcher. I went into this research just trying to figure out why Smoltz has been better than Maddux and Glavine in the postseason. I was kind of shocked to learn from looking at the stats that Maddux was actually great in the postseasons that I thought he kind of stunk in and that he was actually better than Smoltz. I still don’t know what to think every after researching and writing about it because what I found is so contrary to my perception of Maddux in the postseason. But Maddux was screwed bad by two things: woeful run support and poor defense. He let up 16 unearned runs in those 124 innings. That’s pretty awful. Allowing unearned runs to score could be blamed on him but his opponent’s OPS against him was still lower than those other pitchers throughout their periods of dominance. The bottomline is that if his defense played better, his bullpens pitched better and his offense scored some darn runs on a consistent basis, he would be remembered as even better than all of these so called postseason warriors who get glorified because their defense played better, their bullpens pitched better, and their offense scored some darn runs for them.
Obviously, Mathewson, Koufax and Gibson factor into the conversation and might be more dominant or better in the postseason. Their dominance was in the World Series as opposed to some divisional series and NLCS games Madduzx pitched in. But they did not pitch 120 innings in the postseason at a dominant level like Madduzx did.

Umpire Struck by Pitch, Taken off in Ambulance at Dodgers Game

“LOS ANGELES — Plate umpire Kerwin Danley was taken off the field in an ambulance after he was struck on the jaw by Brad Penny’s fastball that Dodgers catcher Russell Martin missed in the fourth inning Saturday night.
The game was delayed for 18 minutes, with Danley laying nearly motionless behind home plate before being put on a stretcher and loaded into the ambulance.
Dodgers spokesman Josh Rawitch said Danley lost consciousness briefly, but was conscious and coherent when he was placed into the ambulance.
Dodgers medical personnel accompanied him on the ride to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was taken for precautionary reasons.
Crew members Brian Runge and Greg Gibson rushed to his side while first-base ump Angel Campos hustled back into the dressing room to put on the gear to work home plate.
Runge held Danley’s left hand and patted him on the chest while they waited for the ambulance, and the crowd applauded the umpire as he was placed into the vehicle.
The video board in left field showed Danley, the crew chief, being driven out the center-field gate, with the words “Our best wishes to umpire Kerwin Danley” at the bottom of the screen.
A Los Angeles native, Danley has been a big league umpire since 1998. He has worked in four division series, the 2007 AL championship series and the 2007 All-Star game.”

Let me see… we had Hampton on the DL off, on and off again, then went Gonzo, then Soriano, then Moylan, the Glavine, then Chuck James, then in his last three games including yesterday Huddy looked suspiciously weak… or injured, and now today Smoltz looks… I don’t even want to say it or think it.
What the hell is going on here? Some is age related but we are at a distinct disadvantage in every game. Yikes.

Paladin, we got Thomas Brown! Great change of pace back and kickoff returner; glad he fell to us in round 6. Tough little guy, and you can never have too many Dawgs.
SG, that wasn’t bad. Not a big fan of the bands that alternate sounding like the Beatles with something much harder back and forth in the same song, but this was better than most. I actually preferred the Victor Whooten solo.

If we claim to be a country founded on religious freedom, then if someone worships green people(no, not Grinch)with one eye in their foreheads, then we must recognize this. 95% of men who get married to ONE woman are fools; what kind of utter moron would marry multiples? Now, a HAREM on the other hand settles both the legal issue and the psycho power play of the world’s most overrated and depressing institution. The women are free to come and go as they please (and thus are not exploited), the man doesn’t have to put up with their nonsense if he doesn’t want to and they don’t take everything he’s ever worked for and loved on the way out the door; they knew what they were getting into in the first place. I think I’ll apply to be Sultan of Dubai. 🙂

A bit of wisdom passed along to me by my dear father. He told me “a man is entitled to one good woman and one good dog in his life time. It takes a wise man to recognize when he has both.”

I am indeed happily married but I don’t understand … while methinks it’s true that only those for whom you care can cause you great emotional distress, why would anyone get married and not be happy … I don’t think I could ever marry someone who wouldn’t make me happy … dumb move … bummer … bad career decision … methinks Tommy Mansfield and Mickey Rooney were probably happy with each of their many wives … that’s why they got married so many times.

Bob, Kyle Rohrbough has not made his 08 debut yet. I’m not sure why that is exactly, but I know it to be true. Also, he only appeared in about six games at Rome last year.
Locke is at Rome this year.
Neither of those guys are any where near ready, just as FBG says.

And are the panicky Petes out there as well! Couple guys saying the season’s over…and it’s not even May! Don’t miss that talk at all. I mean, do the Mets or Phils the least bit scary this year??? If the Phils go on a 20-5 run or something, then we are in trouble, because the wildcard has a good chance to come out of the West or even the Central this year….
I think this year we will see more parity than we ever have before. Half the teams in baseball might win their division with 84-85 wins. Shoot, the Tampa Bay

On Smoltz, I am glad we still have some decent arms left. The season could be a disaster or not. Depends on how well the kids respond to the bell when called. This could just be someone’s big opportunity.
It’s never fun to lose to the Mets but a big reason was the absence of Escobar and Chipper from the line up. It still comes down to pitching however. Jair is emerging and so will Jo Jo I think. Young Reyes has too much talent too not do well in the big leagues.

Richmond got their hat handed to them yesterday by the Oriole’s AAA club. Rowenhurst continued to give up runs like cheap nylons….
The Braves open a three game series at Durham Monday at 7:05. Charlie Morton is slated to pitch for Richmond against Scott Kazmir. That is a game I would pay money to see right there…

Thanks, I guess, to those that have already wished me a happy birthday. My favorite great-grandniece, FBG, almost set a record. 😀 And I want to thank Gil for keeping our deal.
My niece came over yesterday and we were looking for candles to put on my cake. We couldn’t find them but I did find the rest of my Easter eggs so it was a wash. Besides, I can’t put all of the candles on my cake. Drought conditions and all, I couldn’t get a burn permit. So, I’ll put 21 on it. One for each pill I take.
The most important thing is: When is our Dalai Moma going to disclose her Birthday? Many inquiring minds want to know. Later. My gruel is growing cold.

Morning, all. One can do all sorts of things with numbers, but looking at a graph doesn’t make me forget what I watched. Maddux was pretty mediocre most of the time in the PS, gawdawful some of it and pretty good some of it (and I posted earlier in this same thread that I thought he was the best pitcher of the last 30 years). What I saw of Glavine (save ’95) was a good bit worse. I remember thinking to myself several years when Bobby would go to his three-man rotation (unlike any other manager) that Glavine was the one who should have been left out.
I have this same problem with Jo-Jo Reyes as a REGULAR pitcher; admittedly I haven’t seen all his big league starts, but I’ve seen four. In all four he looked like someone who IF THEY COULD FIND THE PLATE might have the stuff to be a mid to back end of the rotation type. But he couldn’t find the plate, at all. I assume he looks a hell of a lot better at Richmond, and KC told me there were a couple of starts of his that I missed where he looked pretty good. Fair enough, but I’d still just like to see even one (and if not a single dang one of our other starters can’t pitch more than four innings we might as well bring him and Morton up too).
On a good note, the Falcons draft wasn’t a disaster overall, and the Hawks actually looked like an NBA team the other night in the playoffs.

Grincher… I watched JoJo alot last season. Early on, he looked totally overmatched and over his head, but in his last 2 or 3 starts, it was as if a light bulb turned on somewhere and he suddenly was a pitcher. He showed me, at least, in those last few starts that he has a bright future on this staff. And with the starters dropping more frequently than the Spears sisters’ drawers, the future could begin very soon.
Now, Falcons. (Still going for the journalist-like transitions…) I like what they did in the draft OK… I, like most, am a little perplexed at the lack of interior linemen drafted. I have to believe, though, that Dimitroff has a plan, and that he’s executing it the best he can with the players available. Also, I read many times that Grady Jackson is a possible FA, how many OL FA’s are still job hunting? I can’t believe that they’ll keep Joe Horn’s salary on the books too much longer, so there should be a little FA money available.
Now, Hawks. Do I expect them to win this series? No. I don’t even really expect them to win another game. But they did show me something the other night; they showed me guts, pride and desire. I have seen none of those in recent seasons. If they have a real coach next season, and can re-sign the Joshes, they could be a very interesting team in the East. And I absolutely LOVE Al Horford. He is easily the best draft pick of Billy Knight’s sorry career. But, hey, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then…

I think Smoltz’s effort yesterday is an example of what the term “grind it out” is all about. Smoltzie might be done. Mike Hampton may not be quite ready but he might get thrown in pretty soon. What I witnessed Friday night was two Mike Hampton, one was Mike doing a rehab assignment in a game that meant little to him and the other was the Mike Hampton that was worth every penny of the $15 million the Braves are paying him when he brought his “A” game and started making batters look foolish on some nasty breaking stuff.
I know he is not ready to go full as of yet but there are two off days for the Braves in this week. Hampton is scheduled to make his second rehab start Wednesday. I think the best case is he would be ready to go for the Atlanta club next Monday.

I can’t call Ryan an awful pick. I’d rather they had picked Dorsey, but they are privy to way more information than we are, and I have to assume there was a good reason they passed on him. Only time will tell on Ryan. Risky? Yes. Awful? No, not awful… yet. Gotta wait on this’un. Ryan has the prototype QB build and the skillset to succeed. It’s not like they took Colt Brennan. Here’s the key – they have to get him signed so that he doesn’t miss ANY time. He needs ALL of the mini-camps, etc.
Bottom line to me: he has the potential to be Rothlisberger, Rivers or Brees. Heck, even if he turns out to be Jake Plummer, it’s still a huge step forward. I’d be happy with that.

VOR, you are right. Saying that Ryan was an awful pick is wrong on my part. I just don’t like the pick. I don’t think he is a game changer. I do like that he is pretty athletic and has a good arm. Most importantly, he has a gunslinger mentality like Favre – and like Eli Manning when Eli is not overthinking the game and not trying to be a perfectionist like his brother. The best thing I can say about Ryan is that he has the smarts to know when and why he made a mistake but also the gunslinger courage to not be afraid to make the same mistake again if he has to.
Hey, I am a Giants fan as well. I have always been an Eli basher and thought that was a mistake pick and trade. But clearly I was wrong since they won a Super Bowl – in part because Eli is a smart QB like Ryan who is really good when he is not afraid to let it all hang out and not afraid to make mistakes. But like Eli, I don’t think Ryan is gonna be any good or make a difference unless he is getting great play in the offensive line and defensive line trenches. The biggest reason the Giants won the Super Bowl was because their defensive line manhandled the Patriots celebrated offensive line. I think that Dorsey could have been the difference maker like the Giants D line was. I guess we’ll see

Sign of the times – not one member of the Alabama Crimson Tide was selected in the draft. Mike Shula was a pretty bad coach. It’s a credit to Nick Saban that he did as well as he did last season without having his own fully loaded frosh class and without having any upperclassman worthy of selection in the pro draft.

Speaking of bubbas(noted lack of transition), I have this advice to the Ga. legislature. Instead of conducting a costly, and impossible, series of litigations to tap the Tenn. River, instead do this. Go up to Dade county(just miles from the river)and dig a 1000 wells into the aquifer and pump the water to Atlanta and other parts of the state. The river will continually refill the aquifer and there is nothing Tn can do about it. AND it won’t be that much more expensive, if any, than tapping into the river, itself.

100% in agreement. However, that goes for almost any QB. It all starts inside and works its way out. Look at Indy and NE. Unrivaled steadiness in the trenches. Combine it with talented “skill” players (a term I hate!) and you have yourself a Super Bowl contender.
You are also right that this draft wasn’t rife with potential immediate impact. Maybe that’s why TD approached it the way he did, knowing that he wasn’t gonna fix it all this weekend. I like most of the picks. Let’s face it, as bad as the Falcons were this past season, anything he picked outside of PK was filling a need.

A word to the wise… Joe Gibbs in his hey day made a good living cultivating number 5 and 6 round picks. Number one picks are usually top line players over the course of their careers. Not always the case if those players were quaterbacks. I sometimes wonde who is making the decisions on which players to draft. The coaches or the marketing guys who only know football by what the see on ESPN. Come to think of it, maybe the coaches only know what they see on ESPN.

Gil, what do you think about Kyle Busch? I thought that was a HUGE mistake by Hendricks last year to dump Kyle and keep Mears. I know Kyle is an absolute pain in the rear – even more so than his brother – but that kid has more talent than anyone. I love watching that kid race. I think Gibbs has a really great trio right now with Stewart, Hamlin, and Busch. Stewart and Hamlin drive like ferocious middle linebackers and Busch drives like a kamikaze free safety. Those three don’t care who is in their way – not even each other

As for my Maddux lead, I probably should have labeled it: Was Maddux Better In The Postseason Than We Remember? instead of was he the greatest ever in his prime in the postseason. I certainly don’t remember him being great at all. But it’s awfully hard to say someone isn’t great in the postseason when they put a 1.85 ERA over 124 consecutive innings in the postseason and that result is better than anyone else has put up over a similar span of postseason innings.
He was badly victimized by poor and inconsistent run support and by unearned runs. That has also been true of the Braves over the last 2+ seasons as well. They’ve let up about 10 to 15 more unearned runs than they should have over the entire season and their offense, while putting up great overall numbers, has been very guilty of providing a lack of run support in games they don’t slaughter someone.

Maddux was the greatest pitcher I have ever watched. I know “chicks dig the long-ball”, but it was always a pure pleasure to watch Greg Maddux literally carve up a lineup with the precision of a surgeon. I remember reading an interview with him several years ago where he talked about getting specific movement on his pitches simply by altering the finger pressure on the baseball. Pure genius.

I can never understand why a man who can get any woman he wants, resorts to playing around with little girls. Always boggles my mind. The reality is that they often can’t get any woman they want despite their looks, money, and fame. They are often domineering bullies who want to control things. It’s harder to control adult women. What we know about Clemens is that he is a control freak and likes to look down upon people. From his testimony, we can tell he still has the mentality of an emotionally stunted teenager himself. He still seems to think and talk like one – thus, why he may only be capable of conducting a conversation with those of the opposite sex who are at the same intellectual, emotional and conversational level he dwells in. Maybe he didn’t do it. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire, however. Why would a grown man hang with a teen? The girl may have looked great at 15 but she still looked 15 and everyone knew she was 15. Bizarre even if he didn’t touch her

Now Clemens… Sad…. I cannot say he is guilty of being a child molester but he is guilty of being incredibly stupid. Sometimes you have to know when to keep your mouth shut.
I was a fan of Mindy but you knew her career was in the tank when she would get bookings to the Podunk County Fair while her contemporaries were playing the big arenas in Atlanta and Dallas. Her first big public mistake was the nude calendar she posed for. Very tame by todays standards but racy for country music all the same.
I thought it was funny that the New York Daily News reported Clemens as a past member of the Boston Red Soxs and the Houston Astros. No mention of the fact he pitched for the Yankees.

Morning again. WW, there were only two DT’s available in the draft that were better than what we signed in free agency. There are also NO QB’s coming out next year. Ryan is polite, intelligent and not likely to get into trouble; a must for the most visible Falcon for the next 10 years. They would’ve had to give up all three 2nd rounders (and likely a 3rd or 4th) to move back up to get Ellis…not gonna happen. I think they did ok; they’re looking ahead to next year’s draft too and if you read that link I posted earlier they explained everything in a way that makes pretty good sense to me.
Y’all, I’m no more a child molester than the next Grinch, but I feel I need to drop some knowledge on you. There is a switch that is thrown at about age 14 and 3/4 which turns a girl who really is a little girl directly into the shrewd, calculating, evil little trollop she’ll remain until her mid-to-late 30’s. They are no longer in ANY sense victims; quite the opposite. Since I don’t advocate innocent men going to jail right and left I think that unacompanied 15 year olds should either be locked in a halfway house until they’re of age or at least be under 24 hour camera/voice surveillance. I’ve barely escaped with my freedom and sanity several times and watched it happened to others too often not to speak up. And any of you with 15 year old daughters who don’t know better; God help you.

Bill Simmons commented in one of his columns a few weeks ago how stupid MLB is in not being more proactive in putting their product on youtube. I have to agree. If you look at football and basketball, youtube is filled with highlight reels. You would think youtube would be the best way to sell the greatness of the past and present. But MLB in their greed continues to be shortsighted. They want to monopolize their highlight reels and make you pay for them at their website. Just very stupid.
Another big problem is that they are not buying and selling the teenaged phenom the way basketball and football do. I can only find one clip of Heyward in high school – and that was put up because some kid wanted to show off that he struck out Heyward at the amateur level. MLB is missing a great marketing tool by not exploiting youtube. As a Bama alum and a UGA fan, I can go on youtube and find countless highlight reels for almost every kid Bama and UGA signed. I can’t find nothing on these Braves draftees or minor leaguers.
You would think that the Braves would be better able to sell their draftees and minor league players if they would put together highlight packages and upload them to youtube. Makes too much sense to me. But of course MLB is always 20 years behind everyone else. If you want to increase revenue and attendance, start selling the hell out of these kids long before they play a game at the Ted. Heck, at the very least, you can increase trade value for many of the minor leaguers if fans from other teams like what they see and put pressure on their front offices to make stupid trades to get those payers.

Nice Ryan story from TD: During one of the pre-draft interviews, the Falcons braintrust threw alot of offensive info at him, then put him through the grill of posing defensive formations, motion etc. For each situation, Ryan was to explain how he would react under center. During the course of this long interview, Ryan answered everything correctly. Upon completion, he calmly sat down and smiled at TD, giving him a smug “You couldn’t stump me” look. TD said he liked the confidence/arrogance.

Translation… you can be the greatest player in the world and not get a shot but with the right PR and a good agent, you can be a marginal pitcher in the big leagues and sign multi million dollar contracts and still stink up the place….

He’ll be a good QB. Three things a lot of fans are forgetting or haven’t noticed; in the off season we hired very, very good coaches for both the offensive and defensive lines. We also signed two new DT’s, who aren’t flashy but backing up Grady (who I think they’ll also get) will get the job done this year as a stop-gap. AND, just about every player TD drafted from the third round on are special teams monsters, which is a third of the game. Everyone he picked has a good, hard-working attitude and isn’t a thug. Next year he drafts and signs a bunch of beef and the following year we’re in business for years to come. Fear not.

The Falcons should really resist the idea of starting a rookie quarterback before he is ready. It takes a kid with good intelligence about 2 years to learn a system. That is before they actually play in a game. Rushing a kid too soon usually results in the home town crowd becoming disillusioned and the kid goes on to become a star for some other franchise or is so shell shocked he will be like a gun shy bird dog. A good nose but not worth a damn in a hunt….

The thing that scares me about Ryan is that he might know what to do but last year he still threw 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 10 games against FSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Va Tech, Ga Tech, Clemson, NC State, Maryland and Michigan State
The year before he threw 10 TDs and 9 INTS in 8 games against Clemson, BYU, NC State, VA Tech, Wake Forest, Maryland, Miami and Navy
That’s 28 TDs and 24 INTs in his 18 toughest games the last 2 years.
I know BC ain’t very good but neither are the Falcons and neither is Matt Ryan IMO – at least not third overall good but I’ll guess we’ll see.

One big reason for Ryan’s high INT numbers wasn’t inaccuracy, but rather bad receiver routes. He was in a pro-style precision read and react offense where he was to throw to a spot where his receivers should be. Too many times, his receivers made their breaks late or simply not at all. I’ll be interested to see how he does with pro receivers.
Gil: I doubt very strongly that they would entertain thoughts of starting Ryan too quickly. They resigned Redman to a 2 year deal for a reason. The only QB battle will be for the backup spot between Joey and Shockley. My money is on Shock, provided his knee is sufficiently healed.

On Kyle Bush… Wow what a talented kid but a bit too much mouth for his own good. It takes a good rider to tame a wild horse and someone like Joe Gibbs is a master at motivating and harnessing the talent of folks who think like jocks. I don’t know if Tony Steward could have been as successful with any other owner group like he has been with Joe Gibbs. His tirades are legendary. Anger management and restoring his image has a lot to do with Gibbs.
Denny Hamlin was indeed fortunate to land with Gibbs but he earned it and he has shown he deserved the shot. As soon as the boss explained to him that Tony’s definition of team work meant Tony was always top dog and that Denny would have to stoop and bow to his Tonyness, things were cool.
I thought Denny must have been given all of J.J. Yeley’s old equipment the way he started the season. He has already been pushed out of his Nationwide ride for most of the year but racing is becoming more and more a team sport.

Gil, yeah, Busch has a really big mouth. But the sport needs a bad dude like him who runs his mouth and will knock anyone out of his way trying to win. That kid is really fun to watch. Can you imagine if Hendricks had Junior, Gordon, Jimmie and Kyle on the same team? I love Junior but he’s the worst out of that foursome. But Busch probably did need achange of scenery and Gibbs was probably the perfect place for him to go.
I agree with you about Stewart. Anywhere else but with Gibbs, his career would not have lasted very long. The sad thing about Stewart is that he is probably the best driver in NASCAR but he blows a handful of races a year at least being stupid, macho and who knows what goes through that moody SOB’s head sometimes. Yesterday was a perfect example. Got too aggressive and wiped everyone out. Of course, he wasn’t man enough to openly admit it like he demands out of other drivers. Hamlin is a great talent. I like his style. He just keeps charging and charging and charging. I read last week that Stewart is thinking about changing teams or starting up his own. That would be the dumbest move for him.

CL and FBG, boys at 15 are little %$#’s who are stupid, often cruel and always completely succeptible to their raging horomones. The girls are taught to take advantage of it for monetary and social status reasons. It’s been that way in Western culture for centuries. I don’t make the world; I just live in it.
The two of you are obviously exceptions or you wouldn’t be on here. You’d be telling some poor schmuck to take out the trash while on your way out the door to Neiman Marcus with his credit card. You’re independent and decent women who’ve done things a different way and that’s why I count you among my friends and trust you both. Before both of you tear me a new one, ask yourselves how many women outside of family you know and trust (you’re hanging out on an almost all male blog), and then how many males? Yes, I know it works both ways; just in a different style. Wish it were different.

WW… My wife is a Tony Steward fan.. It is funny how she always gets resentful of having to apologize for him. She was a Dale Earnhardt fan until his untimely death. We got away from watching the sport until Denny came along. I found someone to root for again. (I was a fan of everyone else besides Earnhardt… 🙂 )
I sometimes miss the regional feel of NASCAR but I understand business and so I can accept the attempts at expansion into California and New York. I just don’t think it will ever be accepted by the New York City folks as they think it to be a hick sport. well…. it might be….
Sometimes people try to reach a little too far and lose the support of the people who made them successful to begin with. I call it the ex spouse syndrome. Folks are so driven by the idea that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence that they forget they still have to mow the lawn.

Yeah, Gil, sad to say, but I never saw Earnhardt race. I’m one of those Yankee transplants that only started watching NASCAR after (and because of) Earnhardt’s death.
It is sad to hear so many of my Southern friends so angry with the direction of NASCAR. I don’t know any better than what I’ve seen over the last 5 years because I never got to experience the good ole days everyone talks about it.
Once I started watching races, I quickly got into it. You get sucked into the personalities of the drivers pretty easily because they are all good guys. The biggest turnoff to me is that there are too many nice guys who are too clean cut and too pretty boyish and too corporate. Whenever I see the old clips, it’s a bunch of ugly, nasty dudes who competed like a bunch of maniacs – but who were basically just good dudes off the track. The money and corporate sponsorship, even to a neophyte NASCAR fan like myself, seems to have sucked the heart and soul right out of the sport at times.
I got into it because of my Southern friends were so into it. I used to get ticked off when they wanted to watch the race at Dega instead of the seventh round of the NFL draft, an NBA playoff game, or a Braves game. But I got sucked in because of the excitement my friends had for it. The ironic thing now is that I am actually more into it than those Southern friends are these days. They have the same frustrated feeling about the direction of the sport that you and Grinch have shared on here before.

Methinks too that most folks evaluate others in terms of their own standards … for how else could one so do … like jimmy smith, I like to choose those with whom I have a drink … Clemens is not one of those … and though it does appear that he is incredibly stupid, that is not the reason why.

I hate the cookie cutter tracks at Texas, California, Phoenix. Makes for awful racing that’s unwatchable. I don’t like the Atlanta track much either. Those cookie cutter tracks really seem to make for boring races of people going in circles and no action.

Just got contacted from a history publishing house that saw some stuff on my site they liked! They type of stuff they say they’re looking for is exactly what I’m halfway good at writing, and they want a book. SWEET! Now, I just have to write the book. That’s actually the easy part. 🙂
WW, agreed about the cookie cutter tracks but Atlanta ain’t one of them. It’s become boring now because of the rules changes, but that high banking back when cars were really cars and racin’ was really racin’ made it one of the best tracks on the circuit. Go back (if you can) and find some footage there from the 70’s (back when it was the “Firecracker 400”. And your Uncle’s right; the tide going out or coming in during the Daytona race actually washed over the backstretch. Talk about varying track conditions!

My earliest real recollection of NASCAR begins with about 1960… The late Fireball Roberts and the wide track Pontiac. Then the ’63 Fords and the ’64 Chevy’s and Junior Johnson. I would like it better if the cars were more “stock” but let’s face reality, the new cars are a heck of a lot safer.
WW… If you ever want to really enjoy everything racing has to offer and by that I mean a full throttle, in your face, smell the racing fuel go deaf kind of race, go to Richmond. Paul Sawyer was a genius, knew how to make the race exciting without making it too hard on the equipment. You can see the entire race from just about anywhere.
Bristol is another great race to attend. Of course now it is a little less like roller derby but still a great race.
Huge super speedways are like major league ballparks. The field is the same size no matter the venue but you can get a long ways away from the action because of the size of the facility.

Ah, safety shmafety. That’s why they’re supposed to drive. When you pack ’em in a space suit, tie ’em down in an unbreakable cage and send ’em out in an unbreakable piece of machinery that doesn’t resemble a regular car, doesn’t run or handle like a regular car, it ain’t car racin’! Bleh! They take too darn many chances knowing they’ll be OK. I say send ’em out in real stock cars built out the @$$ and let ’em go at it!
Just kidding… 😆 I know very little about NASCAR, and pay very little attention. I do not like the generic cars, though.

My Brother is 77 and still runnin’ modified stocks at a dirt track near here. That is REAL racing. When the pack goes by and the crowd gets showered with dirt clods. My Brother is no longer any good, but he still enjoys it. Every season we ask the other drivers to vote whether they want him to run or not. Each time it’s. “Hell yes we want him to run. That way there’s at least one azz —- I can count on beatin'” 😛

Well, dodged that bullet by a good bit today. Suffolk really got hammered though.
When Josie and I first moved to Mechanicsville, we had a tornado pass pretty much directly over us. I was awake in the early morning when it came thru and I saw the rain, the darkness and heard the classic “train roar” as it went overhead. It tore up a good bit of Chester, bounced hit the area of Richmond by the race way then bounce again and hit Studley. I figured the Lord still had things for me to do so he guided that storm past us.
I was involved with EMS for 42 years before I retired two years ago. I can tell you that working a disaster like a tornado is really hard work. One reason I admire firefighters out west fighting forest fires. Low pay and hard work and on your best days, you only save the chimneys.
Falcon One…. Hummm… My dad owned a Falcon. That awful metallic green with a three speed on the column and a 95hp in line six. It got about 30 miles to the gallon though, just ahead of it’s time I guess… 🙂
Soar high Falcon One… On second thought, maybe best to stay sober during the flight…

Glad you’re OK, Gil. I’ve seen one tornado up close & that was more than enough times for me. We were headed to Miami to watch the Braves & somewhere down amongst the sugarcane fields we got caught in a storm. The tornado parallelled the road for several minutes. I was very close to having to bail out of the car & jump into a ditch probably filled with snakes & some gators.

My original avatar, in this series, was supposed to be an Atlanta Falcon. Due to some sidetracks, it confused some people. My present moniker and avatar are the A4C Skyhawk which is one of the a/c the USMC actually paid me to fly. It was a blast and a privilege I will never forget!

I don’t know who gave permission for Miley to be photographed that way but you noticed that the one picture that is said to be most embarrassing is the one plastered all over the internet. To have any type of sexually suggestive photo (and I don’t know what else you could possible call it) taken of a 15 year old is child pornography in my opinion. If Billy Ray is responsible, then you are right 008…. It is totally irresponsible.

So Glav has been activated to make tonight’s start… Who goes down to make room? I can’t find the transaction reported anywhere yet. My guess is Lillibridge, since Chipper, and probably Yunel too, should be back tonight.
Now, You all know I am the eternal optimist. I’m not just a “glass half full” kinda guy, I am a “glass 1/4 full” kinda guy. That being said, I am really nervous about Smoltz’ exam today. I don’t know if anyone else has considered it this way, but it is entirely possible that we have seen his last game. 😯 Smoltz, who has had 4 major surgeries and subsequent rehabs, has publicly stated that he won’t have another major surgery. If this is rotator cuff, we’re talking surgery to fix, or rest and hope. I, for one, am really praying that the doc finds no structural issues… 😐

Raisins, I have those same concerns regarding Smoltz. His demeanor after the game was apparently different than had ever been seen before – and that just may have been his last game. Oh, I hope not!!!!! He’s sure given it his all! Hope the report will be forthcoming quickly!

His shoulder hasn’t been right all year. Let’s be honest, that was entirely the reason for his “special” spring workouts this year. He is as gutty as they come. If he can go out and grit through the pain, he will; he has. Heck, he’s been downright dominant for 5-6 innings at times this season, even with the ever-present problem.
Smoltz is my favorite all-time Brave. To me, he epitomizes everything (on the field, Grinch) that you want a player to be. Team over self, work through the pain, always prepared, give 100% every pitch and every inning, etc. He is a HOF’er, no question. I sure would love to see him get one more shot at the post-season.

He’s always been one of my favorites too, VOR. I know some fans occasionally question the Braves’ “fire” or “heart”. Never any question with Smoltz. The fire’s always been there. And he has pitched through a lot of pain over the years.

One of things I’m looking forward to about moving is that I won’t need ExtraInnings anymore. We’ll get FSN & Sportsouth & Braves radio. We should get Peachtree too since the “local” channels are the Atlanta stations on satellite. It will be nice to get the pre- & post-game coverage that ExtraInnings chops off.

“Let’s be honest, that was entirely the reason for his ‘special’ spring workouts this year” … it seemed to be the most obvious answer to the “unasked” question … but the real question, methinks, is why they weren’t honest … not, with us or the media … that’s certainly understandable … but with themselves?
Forewarned is forearmed … or at least it should be … and if the delay in facing the problem has resulted in its exacerbation and/or deterioration beyond effective restoration … accountability should be effected.
“The Braves hope that a few weeks of rest will bring Smoltz relief in his shoulder” … I hope so too but, a few weeks is longer than 15 days and “bringing relief” somehow seems so hapless and inadequate.
It’s remindful of Mike Gonzalez, and oh so many others, methinks.
Hopefully, Glavine and Hampton can be good numbers 3 and 4 for the rest of the season … though Mike could still be number one or two, methinks … were he to get a new body … I didn’t say that … it’s probably now more above the neck than below, given his history.

Sounds like the perfect candidate for a legal steroid injection. It is what the stuff was designed for in the first place. I found however, that if they don’t put it in exactly the place that hurts, it does little good. OMG does it ever hurt… but relief is pronounced.

Rossi, who earned two presidential citations for his combat prowess, died April 17 at his home in Fallbrook, north of San Diego, his wife said.
In November 1941, Rossi joined a secret volunteer group of pilots who would travel to China and defend it against the Japanese. Officially known as the American Volunteer Group, the Chinese referred to the pilots as the Flying Tigers for their aerial combat skills.
In December 1941, Rossi and his squadron first engaged the Zeros over Kunming, China, and shot down three of the planes. During their months of combat, the Flying Tigers shot down 296 Japanese planes.

Rossi spent the rest of the war years working as a pilot for the China National Aviation Corp., delivering supplies from India to China. He made 735 trips over the Himalayas.

Top of the evening, denizens. Gotta jet to bed here, but just wanted to say hello.
Tough loss tonight, for sure. Frustrating that the lack of clutch hitting and missed pitch location by the bullpen continues to do in the ballclub. Case in point: two on in the seventh, game tied at 2-2, top of the order up, and can’t get anything done. Then, bottom half of the seventh, Boyer leaves a pitch out over the plate (was supposed to be off the dish, but tailed back and got way too much of the plate) and Zimmerman smacks it the other way to score two runs.
Couldn’t ask for much more outta Tommy tonight: two runs over six innings, gotta win when your starter gives you that. At least it seems, for now, that we’ll have Smoltz back in two to four weeks, and maybe in the bullpen as opposed to the rotation.
As I wrote on http://braves.today.com this morning, it’s time for Tim Hudson to man up and start pitching like an ace. The Braves NEED somebody to do it. So far, Jair Jurrjens and Jeff Bennett have saved this first month, but Hudson’s got to stop this three-inning madness.
Sigh, had to vent some frustration there. Need to win tomorrow, come home and get going against the Reds and Padres.
Y’all, I’m still in shock over the Hawks … totally crazy down here in the A. EVERYBODY is talking about what these kids have done. I don’t think they’ll win Game 5, but I like their chances in Game 6 (I’m going), and when you get to a Game 7, anything can truly happen. Even if the Hawks lose the next two, it’s been fun and it’s a heck of a jumping-off point for next season.
And, for those of you who were in Atlanta in the late 1980s, when the Hawks captured this city’s attention and grabbed its heart … like the Braves did starting in 1991 … here’s a little musical blast from the past. I used to listen to this song before going to every Hawks game, and often, we’d listen to it on the way to school in the mornings.

Maybe it’s just me but Bowman seemed rather snarly in his reporting tonight … and Glavine’s “I’m wondering if I’m ever going to win a game” … might suggest some testiness, though I don’t know the context … he hasn’t pitched badly but we’ve lost all four of his starts.
In happier times, I had thought that John said relieving/closing was harder on him physically than starting, relative to his physical problems. Sounds like John may be looking at 2008 as his last … sure wish they could offer him something better than rest and reevaluate … I imagine that he more or less rested from September to late February … and still anticipated or experienced the problem when he approached Spring Training … I hope they’re right but it sounds almost like Smoltz told them early on … “it hasn’t gone away but I’ll figure out a way … just get me through this year”
I hope for his sake he isn’t too insistent and doesn’t try to do too much … I also hope that better chemistry exists than is my perception … besting the pitcher is the name of the game … Ty Cobb would have told you that, methinks … and maybe four of the eight try to so do, at least some of the time and Chipper could hit .500, if only he believed that he could.

Bob, thanks for asking…I feel better, big difference came when fever left after 5 days….I’d feel much better if I could, you know…sleep! 😕 I slept from 11 am til 4 pm, and that was the most sleep I have had since I got sick a week ago. Kinda hard to get over something if you are up for 21 hours a day.

While many of us have grown wary of those big-walk, big-strikeout players who don’t alter their approaches to get runners home from third, those who make contact and produce continually intrigue us. For instance, that Gary Sheffield swings as hard as he does and has 342 more walks than strikeouts in his career is astounding. It’s been pointed out that we should have known Ryan Garko was going to hit when he had more homers than strikeouts.
One of the most reliable barometers on hitters is that small group that has more walks and extra-base hits than strikeouts, something Dustin Pedroia has had every year in high school, college, the minors and the majors. Again, thanks to Rob Tracy, here are those who have more walks and more extra-base hits than strikeouts in 2007-08:

Smoltz didn’t really find being the bullpen more taxing on his arm, he found it to be more taxing on his golf game…. Now, if anyone has any questions on how much the Braves miss Peter Moylan, they need only to review last night’s meltdown of Blaine Boyer. The real momentum shift however, took place in the top of the inning when the Brave had Diaz on third and failed to score with less than two outs. I saw a loss coming then.
I am not ready to give up on this team yet but they are trying my patience…

Morning. One hour of sleep 😕 Then, my lungs and bronchial passages decided to shut down, and force me awake…..cough syrup, pill for coughing(Perhaps I should have said I needed a pill not for coughing, but to stop coughing! ) inhaler….nothing quite doing the trick…every time I get something, it seems worse than the last time.
Doc didn’t want to give me oral steroids since they can bring up blood sugar…ask me if I care right now??? If I cough so much I drop dead, I will at least take comfort in having low blood sugar.

FLB, no…strangely enough he didn’t. He looked in my sinuses, said they looked bad….ears where bad, listened to me cackle when I took a deep breath and said I had bronchitis. Gave me free meds 🙂 Antibotic, and some cough pill. Don’t know why he didn’t give me cough syrup prescription, and wish I had remembered the steroids. Called about that today. Hope he doesn’t worry about a spike in sugar…..I got to sleep, and nothing is working! 😦
He’s really a swell guy…..best doctor I have ever had, actually gives a damn about patients. Even talked about someday just making housecalls.

Also giving “credit” where “credit” is due: The majority of the people posting over there (Note: not ALL of them) are the biggest immature losers I have ever seen. Some of the things being said about Hampton are beyond vicious. Alot of the things are simply stupid and uninformed. Once again, I am so very appreciative of the Colossus, the Dalai Mama, and a great group of sensable adults with whom I can hold reasonable discussions. Sheesh, I still can’t get over the level of individual stupidity found over there… 😡

What I can’t believe is everyone is still writing off Hampton. I reality he pitched better today than he did last Saturday but at around 55 pitches, he felt the same twinge he had in Richmond. Nothing has changed. He is still scheduled to make another start Sunday or Monday.

Most of them are just out of puberty Hawk. They are part of the me first, in your face generation. At least until they actually have to look someone in the eye. For the most part, they have a big L branded on their forehead. It is why I limit my conversations over there to a few short words.
Most of them (not all) couldn’t manage a Fantasy team much less a real baseball team. The limit of their baseball knowledge extends to what the see and hear on ESPN and This Week in Baseball…..

Y’all, this might be the most physically beautiful day in the history of creation. Shame on anyone sitting in front of a keyboard (and I’m only here for about 2 minutes). Now, Hampton…
I really like Hampton. Always have. This Spring he had the best stuff of any of our starters and I thought there was no way he wasn’t going to win 12-15 even with missing the inevitable few starts. You can certainly question his fragility, but nobody should question his mental toughness and grit. Here’s my latest theory on why the guy who by all appearances is a superior athlete and still relatively young, yet literally can’t seem to lift a spoonful of cereal to his mouth without tearing a muscle off the bone:
He used to play football. You see all kinds of football players who used to play baseball, run track, play basketball, etc. and when their life begins to focus on football (the pinnacle of all sports) they gain the ability to play through all manner of awful injuries that a baseball player would retire from if they had to even look at them. But it doesn’t seem that way when you turn it around, at least not in the long term.
Think about it: Dion doesn’t count, because he didn’t play long enough and he didn’t really play football, either (he sat out with injuries that a middle-school girl’s softball coach would’ve called him a pansy for, but being “Neon” he got away with it). Bo Jackson, anyone? Brian Jordan? Jordan was a pro-bowl quality safety (a position that a pansy couldn’t play) in the NFL, then came over to baseball and had a few good years and then started to inexplicably fall apart physically in his early to mid-thirties. Exact same thing’s happening to Hampton; I wonder if when your body gets used to the extreme full-throttle abuse of football it never really adjusts properly to a slower game that uses different muscles. Hope this doesn’t bode ill for Francouer in a few years.

The old adage that wishing don’t make it so….. I really wanted Hampton to come back, I was really pulling for him to do it if for no other reason than to shut up the nay sayers and the Chicken Littles… Alas, back to the MRI again no doubt. Perhaps we should just shoot for the All-Star break. Maybe that would be more realistic. Maybe not… Facts remain, you have to play with the guys that show up. Sometimes that means the guys who are still playing have to suck it up and take a few for the team.
Observation on Blaine Boyer… I’m sorry guys, I just can’t like this kid. He reminds me of an American League style pitcher. A human rain delay. It’s as if he doesn’t want to take the mound after he gets out there. I know, you have to play with the guys available but surely there is somebody around who can take his spot.
I hope he makes me eat my words but he hasn’t so far….

Started watching the game about half hour ago. This is not Spring Training, right? Maybe Cox should have a “team meeting” once every 5 days since that last one resulted in a 5 game streak. Seems our team has all the wind knocked out of their sails. Understandable… they know what losing Smoltz and Glavine on a regular basis this year means, not to mention Soriano, Moylan, Gonzo, Hampton and… am I forgetting anyone? You get the point. There is a giant sucking sound and it does not bode well for dreaming of postseason… or even a winning season for that matter.
It’s hard to watch our team struggle like this. Even though it’s still very early in this young season, but our decimated pitching staff and all of the talented but not quite ready for prime time youth on our team just won’t make it. Add to that, all the other owner/manager/franchise givens, here are the choices I see for our 2008 Braves:
A. Status quo/business as usual this year: Braves strategy is to try and piece together a trade or two (no blockbusters) and scratch to get in the playoffs. To do this they’ll have to break out the band-aids, chewing gum, glue and rubber bands to patch together a pitching staff. Then we hobble along and hope our division rivals have anywhere near the bad luck (not injuries) that we’ve had. Oh, and hold our collective breath that we don’t lose more pitching to injury.
B. Sell the farm, make a few big trades and go for broke: In this strategy the Braves franchise would mortgage the future, trade everything not nailed down to a 40 man roster, spend whatever money they can scrape together to try and win it all in what may be the last year for Smoltz, Glavine and Cox.
C. Bite the bullet, accept the inevitable and begin a new era: Braves would accept that 2008 would not be our year to make a run at postseason. We promote players from within the system, we trade players that don’t fit the rebuilding strategy, we keep Chipper, Smoltz (even if his arm falls off) and Glavine, we make necessary ‘must-have’ trades (can’t think of any in this scenario), bring up the kids, trade for some new kids, hire new “tried and true” coaches and coach the young team heavily for the next few years.
Continuing, promote Cox to an upstairs VP role (working heavily with recruitment) and hire a new manager to take over the new era. With this option (C), the rest of this year and in the next few we’ll lose more games than we win, but the rebuilding process will be in place with substantive improvements each year. The remainder of 2008 season will help play the youth movement, see what we’ve got, separate the men from the boys and put ourselves on a similar track as we did in 1986. We would reasonably aim to re-enter the playoffs in 2011, win it all in 2012 and be a team to beat throughout that decade… until we have to retool again. Good teams are cyclical. This year ain’t in the winning cycle.

At what point are we going to stop “making do” with a dysfunctional system and get reorganized? Will Wren do that? Anyway, it seems inevitable that we begin a new era and let the one that started in 1991 and ended in 2005 just rest in peace. It’s coming… we just recognize it and do something about it this year, next year or the one after that.
Obviously, I have absolutely no way of knowing and don’t pretend to, but I suspect that the Braves would opt for (A). I’d be happy with A or C.
Any options I’m missing? What say you?

Wilfredo Ledezma . 14 and 2/3rds innings, 1.15 ERA. He looked like a guy with good stuff, couldn’t figure out why he sucked so terribly for us last year….
I wonder if Bobby just doesn’t like lefties anymore??? Macay McBride, walked a few guys, gone. Ledezma, sucked…gone. Royce Ring, walks guys…never gets a change to get righties out.
After bashing Bobby a bit…I will say this. I don’t think anyone is going to run away with the NL East(Thank God) and after seeing a team last year that not only was dead in the water, but rotting as well, and still made a valiant effort….we are NOT done in April!
But, I scratch my head to talk of Smoltz leaving the rotation. Then who replaces him??? What if Hudson has some problem??? Or Glavine tweaks the Hammy on a bunt???
Acosta will do just fine, IF Soriano is out for an extended period. 3 innings, when was the last time a braves closer went 3 innings????

guess what???? From 2005- to 2007 in 78 AB’s against lefties, they are hitting .205 off him. In 77 AB’s against righties, they are hitting .182 against him!!! Nope, can’t pitch a whole inning, just a guy to get out lefties…
Why, when the bullpen is seemingly so overtaxed do we have a guy who has pitched only 4 1/3 innings for the month of April????

Berigan, there’s a parallel between Bobby and Mike Woodson of the Hawks. Absolutely no consistent fire, no idea how to use the bench or even if to use it at all, outdated game plans that don’t match the young and talented members of the roster, and a guy that’s so nice you just don’t want to fire him. However, everyone knows (but few feel allowed to say) that both teams would surge forward like the nitrous had been cut on with just about any other coach.

If Mike Woodson had the Celtics, he’d still deliver what he has with the Hawks. Bobby, on the other hand, with the Red Sox would deliver…never mind. He’d still be Bobby, warts and all.
Bobby’s problem is he had a roster full of talent and guys smart enough to be managers one day. They’re still smart enough to be managers, but executing like they used to is becoming more and more inconsistent. Matter over mind…sadly.

*How To Photograph A New Puppy*
1. Remove film from box and load camera.
2. Remove film box from puppy’s mouth and throw in trash.
3. Remove puppy from trash and brush coffee grounds from muzzle.
4. Choose a suitable background for photo.
5. Mount camera on tripod and focus.
6. Find puppy and take dirty sock from mouth.
7. Place puppy in pre-focused spot and return to camera.
8. Forget about spot and crawl after puppy on knees.
9. Focus with one hand and fend off puppy with other hand.
10. Get tissue and clean nose print from lens.
11. Put cat outside and put peroxide on the scratch on puppy’s nose.

A public affairs spokeswoman says a high-altitude, supersonic T-38c Talon went down about 7:45 a.m. Thursday. The plane was assigned to the 80th Flying Training Wing, which trains combat pilots for NATO.

Lessons that stayed with me during my years in Rescue given in reference to fighter planes involved in crashes.
1. Never look for the survivors to be with the plane.
2. If the pilot is with the plane, he is probably not a survivor.
3. DON”T TOUCH ANYTHING….. Nothing can ruin your day faster than an ejection seat firing off when you are leaning over the cockpit.
4. Pilots get real P.O.ed when the life raft deploys while they are still in the plane.
And by the way… 008.. The joke about the two crows was a real keeper. Thanks for that one… 🙂

Q: There’s an urban legend in Pittsburgh that, from center field, you tried to wave Barry in to play more shallow in left before Francisco Cabrera’s famous game-winning hit in the 1992 NLCS.
AVS: That’s not a legend, that is not a rumor, that is an absolute, 100-percent, truth that I did.
Q: Was he just ignoring you?
AVS: I always felt that I got a sixth sense on the field that, as an outfielder, I had these premonitions that seemed to come true about half the time. I just felt, given when I saw, that Cabrera was going to hit the ball to left field and nowhere else. Based on scouting reports, based on the count, and that he had just ripped the ball down the left-field line foul when it was 2-0. I was trying to make Barry move in to not let the winning run score from second. He chose to ignore me. Now, if he had moved in two steps, I don’t know if it would have made a difference. I’ll never know that. It might have been a harder play for him because the ball was hit to his left a little.
Q: Maybe he could have trusted you?
AVS: Barry was a great player. It’s sort of like, dealing with Barry made me a greater player in center. But also, it was sort of like being a catcher with a pitcher. He made the last decision. He chose not to move. The unfortunate thing was, if the ball had been hit 10 more feet to his right, I have no question he would have thrown out Sid Bream.

The obvious answer is that Bonds was always an insufferable jerk & didn’t listen to his teammates. But Andy’s too good of a guy to say it plainly. He was very popular here in spring training. Bonds was not.

Thanks Gil. It’s not so much the new job that’s wearing me out, it’s the kids’ schedules. Aside from chorus, our daughter plays for her school tennis team, does gymnastics and just made the cheerleading squad. Our son is “only” doing one thing, baseball. Between those two, their extracurriculars, and their schedules, they are wearing my wife and I out!

I agree, fully, about the broken bats, ODB. Something needs to be done. I’m surprised that Baseball has been so slow to respond. It’s quite obvious that many, many more bats are breaking. And what’s worse, they’re breaking in two, with a jagged projectile firing oftenttimes as far as the ball. That simply never happened a decade ago.

BAS; that subsonic, supersonic business is a sign of journalistic ignorance. The T38 is no more supersonic than the a/c in my avatar, although during tests the A4 went supersonic after the test pilot climbed to almost 70K and practically pointed it straight down. The T38 is a “bridge” between basic trainers and high-performance a/c. Hope that answers your question.

Well, one must take the good with the bad… Scott Thorman broke out of his slump last night by going 3 for 5, hitting three doubles and driving in two runs. His average has risen to the Mendoza line as he is sporting a sparkling .200 batting average for the season.
After being shut out in two consecutive games by the Durham Bulls, (Tampa Bay farm club), the Richmond Braves returned to their offense prowess by scoring 8 runs last night against the Louisville Bats, (farm club for the St Louis Cardinals), unfortunately, Damion Moss was on the mound for Richmond and the R-Braves lost 11-8.

GOING UP: Left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes will become the latest Richmond pitcher to join injury-plagued Atlanta. He is scheduled to start tomorrow against Cincinnati. Reyes was 1-1 with a 1.17 ERA in five starts. He had allowed just 15 hits and three earned runs in 23 innings.
Richmond has sent five pitchers to Atlanta.
“It’s the way Triple-A is,” Brundage said. “You’re at the mercy of injuries. Unfortunately, they’ve had quite a few at the major-league level.”
HIGH PERCENTAGE: Richmond stole its International League-leading 40th base. The Braves have been caught just six times, a success rate of 87 percent.
A big reason for the Richmond loss last night was sloppy play by the team. Three errant throws to first and two passed balls will not endear you to the Manager. Plus Thorman managed to mis-play one pick off throw and contributed mightily to a 4 run outburst by the Bats in the top of the ninth..

While it is quiet on here, I want to get serious for a moment. Yes, I will be speaking, in a sense, to my “nephew” and it won’t be well received. But, that hasn’t stopped me before, has it?
First, I get no “voyeuristic thrills” from this blog. I guess if I were looking for that I’d be on a porn site. No, I’m trying to communicate with some other folks. And I was taught that to communicate you have to listen, or in this case–read–and not just talk, or write. Many of you have a lot to share with all of us, and you do it so well, but if you don’t want to read what I have to say, well then, I’m not that interested in what you have to say, either. So, that is all I’m trying to do and what I’m asking you to do…communicate. To do so, when I return after an absence I try to at least “look” at what’s been said, and talked about. No, I don’t read every word but I scan read at over 1M words @ minute, so I can keep up with the threads and barbs. You’ll notice. I don’t miss many.
Finally, I say to everyone: Try to communicate with me. I’m trying my best to communicate with you. And others.

Braves need a starting pitcher and a big bat off the bench. Brad Wilkerson just received his walking papers from Seattle as they promoted a couple of youngsters. I wouldn’t mind having his bat on the bench. He’s also a legitimate backup for 1B, as well as the corner OF spots.
Still need a starter, though.
Hopefully Jo-Jo is ready and can hold the slot. I think he has to. Will Frank cobble together the 5 slot with Buddy, Bennett or Morton, or bring someone in? Those guys are only gonna give you about 6 innings on a good night. My money says he goes after an established inning eater…

In a two-seater BAS, they have command ejection(one pilot ejects both)but one would still have to do it. It would have been difficult but the will-to-survive and TRAINING can work miracles.

The problem with Bennett is that he doesn’t give you anough innings. You’ll already have two youngsters (JJ and Jo-Jo) going, both of whom have never gone a full season in the majors. They can’t be counted on to give you the same number of innings that a Huddy or Glavine will give. We already have a taxed bullpen. Gotta find an inning eater somewhere.
The Braves have depth in the minors to pull off a deal. The trick, of course, is not to overpay for a middle rotation kinda guy. But if you can get a guy who’ll give you 12-14 wins and 7+ innings a game, I think you have to try.
To me the wild card is Chuck James. If he could step up, go longer than 6 innings, and figure out a way to keep his pitches down, he could fit the role. He’s so friggin’ close, it’s frustrating. 😡

008, I agree with you that the Braves stay in house to fix the rotation. And I think Bennett makes sense. If the Braves stay near .500 thru mid-June, and the rotation is in shambles, maybe you see a trade.
Personally, the price for good pitching is just too high. Let’s stay in house, win some 9-6 games, and hope Hampton can make 10-15 starts.
I’m currently more worried about Hudson than any of them. The unknown is scary. And I find it hard to believe a healthy Tim Hudson is getting pulled after three innings multiple times.

A big mistake most people make is confusing cost with value. Is one better because someone else says it is? If your taste buds don’t care, neither should the rest of you…. Especially after the first drink. If it bothers you for someone else to sell you drinking the lower price stuff, decant it into a different bottle or into a Crown Royal bottle. The folks you serve it to won’t know the difference either.
The only cheap liquor I cannot drink is tequila. The low price stuff gives me a head ache and it’s rough going down too when doing shots.

Very good point, CL. Which brings us to Leo. You can say what you will about him, and I’ve said my share, but we did not have the number of arm problems when he was minding the store.

I don’t think it’s conditioning. It is alarming the rate at which pitchers are going down, all over baseball…and they’re not even racking up near the innings that were standard in our youth (or younger days!). That doesn’t make sense…contradicts all the medical/fitness advancements. The only difference I see, as has been mentioned, is the lower mound. That really changes the physics of pitching, and relocates the stress points. Also, whether it was here, or across the street, there was mention made of less emphasis on throwing with the ‘drive of the legs’. That definitely is a contributor. Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Ron Guidry, Bob Gibson, Drysdale…on and on…they had drive. Ryan protected his legs religiously…he knew where the power came from…leg drive and a strong lower back. Even Smoltzie knows it…as it’s the only reason (in my most humble opinion) he’s been able to overcome the surgeries. Enough pontificating.

VOR, you mentioned Bennett doesn’t go far enough into games…well…..on April 16th, he pitched 1 inning in relief. On the 18th, he started a game and went 4 2/3 innings. On the 23rd, he went 6 innings…you know, what Chuck James dreams of doing. 26th of April,(2 days after a start) he went an inning. Who knows how long he’d go if allowed to start every 5 days????
CL, I read that Hudson did increase his workouts this offseason…and that’s why I worry about him losing MPH for no reason….

CL, it is good to hear Skip out there isn’t it. Even though he sounds (and is) weak, he calls a game and entertains better than any other.
Maybe Huddy has some residual inflammation or weakness from that flu bug in Colorado? He’s cookin’ tonight though. A good outing by him and a win tonight would be a huge boost for the whole team. Here’s hoping this lead holds and we can get some insurance. Runs are at a premium lately. Bat flu going around?

Well, Paladin has retired for the evening, so I guess it’s safe to reveal a little gossip about the ol’ pilot’s past. Looks like he was up to some antics while flying and got called on the carpet and all. Seems there was a little drinking and flying going on too.
