So. What’s going on in baseball?
Manny has his $8.5m condo in Boston up for sale. (That’ll show ’em, Manny!) 🙄
Smoltz is happy is Boston. I wish him well. (shrug)
Junior is 0-9. But, according to sports writers, the fans are ‘energized’. 🙂
The Yankees drama continues. (Their behavior and ‘drama’ remind me of a bunch of junior high school girls)
…..yawn….
What about the Braves?
I really like what I see. They are a ‘get ’em on, get ’em over, get ’em in’ type team – and I desperately hope Bobby will play them that way!
Look at yesterday’s game against the Yankees as one example:
Hitters got on base, Kotchman hits a 2-run double. Braves lead.
Later, Prado hits a double, Escobar hits a sac fly, Prado scores. Braves win.
The pitching is definitely there, IMHO. (Dear Lord, please don’t let them fall apart again this year!)
Kawakami needs a little more acclimation time, I think, but I’d be surprised if he doesn’t wind up impressing us all.
And speaking of impressing: Hanson. Oh, wow! I want to see him in the regular rotation, but I don’t want it to be too early. Is he really ready? Judging by the comments I read from players, I’d have to say ‘yes’.
Then I read this from Cox about another young pitcher, Kris Medlen:
“”Medlen is impressive,” Cox said. “Everything that you hear about that kid, you like. He doesn’t walk anybody and he’s got three plus pitches, for me. He’s got a plus fastball, plus changeup and a plus breaking ball, with control. A lot of guys have plus-this and plus-that, but they don’t have control like he’s got.”
Continuing from Mark Bowman:
“Labeled by some as a poor man’s Greg Maddux, Medlen, who might actually look younger than Brent Lillibridge, possesses a fastball that rests between 91-93 mph and a changeup that has caught the attention of the Braves and many scouts from around the league.
Medlen’s stock began to soar after he was placed in Double-A Mississippi’s starting rotation midway through the 2008 season. In the 92 1/3 innings he worked as a starter, Medlen recorded 90 strikeouts and issued 21 walks.
Given a chance to make another solid impression during the Arizona Fall League, Medlen worked 25 innings, registered 25 strikeouts, issued just one walk and held opponents to a .203 batting average.”
Moylan & Co in the bullpen look good. Gonzo seems ready and eager to go.
I can’t help but feel good about the pitching staff and the youngsters in the pipeline.
I like the infield. Not spectacular, but more than adequate. Steady. And that can take you places instead of always having to wait for a flash in the sun. Combine steadiness with occasional flashes and we might be pleased with the result.
The outfield. Garret Anderson. BIG, BIG plus! I’m very pleased with him as a person and a player. In centerfield, I think the team has a lot of potential with either of several players. In right? Well, I’m hopeful, I’ll leave it at that. (I read that Wrenn said something to the effect that they see improvement, are pleased with his efforts and feel that JF only needs some more time to finish putting it together’.)
I also think that Garret’s very presence in the outfield will have a positive effect on the other 2 outer positions. For once, ‘veteran presence’ actually means something! There are people who can inspire others to perform at a higher level and I get the impression that GA is one of them.
Mac catching, David Ross backup. We’re secure there. (And a few days ago, I didn’t even know who Ross was! 🙄 Give me time; I’ll get there! 😆 )
Niggling things I don’t like:
~Kawakami doesn’t speak English; I read that during games, his interpreter will not be allowed to accompany Bobby/whoever to the mound. Why??
~The comment was made that Mac needs to be in ST instead of at the WBC so ‘he could learn Japanese.’ Ummm, why doesn’t Kawakami bother learn English if he’s going to play here??
~Chino is still bench coach. Eddie Perez should be in that spot and Chino should be in the bullpen.
OK – what do you think?
~CL~
Chino is still bench coach. Eddie Perez should be in that spot and Chino should be in the bullpen.
Tru dat!!!
Thanks for the new lead, CL. For once, I am actually pretty busy… and thankfully so. I’ll try to help the lineup soon.

Good job, CL! I too am pleased with the team at this point.
Eddie absolutely should be the bench coach. I think he’s manager material. ( I’m still not sure what Chino does.)
I recall reading somewhere that KK understands English much better than he speaks it right now. It will come to him quickly hearing it everyday. I know from my skating board that a lot of Japanese people think their English is much worse than it actually is & they’re worried about speaking (or typing) it because they are afraid they’ll offend someone. Our Japanese members constantly apologize for their English & we’re always assuring them that we understand them just fine.

So, A-Roid now has a torn labrum in his hip and may be out 4 months? Yankers will have to find a replacement, and one name bantied about is one Martin Prado. Interesting…

I personally do not think that the Braves would trade Prado to NYY because A) there is no longer a need (LF) to fill and B) if he can handle 3B, the Braves probably need him around. No bad karma wished on Chipper, but he does have a history, and he doesn’t have an extension. I’m just sayin’…
LikeLike
V, the tender hearted part of me hopes that folks like Prado and Josh Anderson will get a chance someday soon to prove they can play full time.
All Prado did last year was hit (.320 in 228 AB’s) and at 24 it’s like he is being told, hey kid, that’s swell, you did the best you could, played with a lot of fire! Now your reward is to be a back up 2nd baseman, and if Chipper and Infante go down, you might play 3rd.
Not saying we should give him away either, it just would be nice to see him get some chance to prove one way or another that he can do it.
Same with Anderson. In 203 AB’s he has a .315 BA, yet I just get that feeling the team doesn’t really have faith in him, and if Schafer has a great spring, no AAA for him, but back to AAA for Anderson. Wait, is he out of options???
Just seems he and Schafer are too similar to both be on the team.

Howdy, y’all! Thanks, FBG!
Ber, I don’t think Eddie actually catches in the bullpen very often. Doesn’t Allen Butts do that? So Chino should have no problem as bullpen coach – and he has a lot of catching experience! I just really think that Eddie is being wasted there. He would be the perfect bench coach.
I agree, FBG. I rarely see Chino do anything at all! Pat was all over the place! Sure wish the Braves had offered him a decent retirement package! (Skip told once that the lack of retirement package is why Corrales left and went where a healthy one was offered. Can’t fault him for that!)

The A-Rod news is perplexing. I’ve heard varying reports about his prognosis. One report says that he’s having surgery next week and will miss four months. Another report says that he’s going to rehab it and won’t be out as long. I read this morning that the Yankees have been aware of this situation for 10 months. If that’s the case, have they been trying to rehab it already? If they have then obviously rehab isn’t working and the surgery should have taken place long ago.
Here’s what should be making Yankee fans nervous. We all know painfully how poorly Tex starts out. What are they going to do without a #3 OR #4 hitter for the first few months of the season? Blue Jays and Orioles fans must be licking their chops!

I used to live down the street from a guy like that. Had enormous speakers that he would turn up as loud as they would go. The first time, I went down there, told him the noise was too disturbing and he turned it down. For a little while. The next visit was from a county deputy. And the next and the next and the next. Then, amazingly, the noise stopped. Only took a few weeks and he finally got the point. No problem since. 🙂

Wow, a cameo appearance by BAS! Don’t be such a stranger!
When I was in college I lived in an old building downtown on King Street. Our upstairs neighbors were rude, inconsiderate pigs. On Saturday nights (really Sunday morning) they would often host “2:00 parties”. The bars closed at 2 am and so they’d have a ton of people over to party until everyone passed out or they ran out of pot and beer.
One night, they would dancing around so much that I was woken up, not by noise, but because my bed was shaking! We’d call them to complain and invariably all noise and motion would stop and one of the two roommates would pick up the phone and pretend they were asleep. Yeah, like we were buying that! Once the phone was put down, things went back to normal.
We got them good once though. I had to get up at 5 am to go out of town. The night before my roommate and I took the giant speakers from the stereo and placed them in the drop ceiling directly below each bedroom. I turned the bass all the way up and put in a CD that was LOUD. Put it on repeat too! I’d arranged for a friend to come over later that morning to eventually turn it off. I think they got blasted for about six hours!
Funny, they didn’t have any parties after that.

Good move, Chris! I found that the cops get tired of having to go to the same addresses for the same complaints – so after a time or two, they issue a written Warning. A subsequent results in Citations with hefty fines. If continued, a judge can actually put them behind bars. It usually doesn’t take too long for the point to sink in: ‘Grow up and behave responsibly, moron!’
Would you believe it is 78 here right now?? Windows and doors open. Car is washed and shiny. Feels great!

The Neighbors From Hell? 11 white trash people crammed into a 2 bedroom, 1 bath house. Wild noisy parties, doors slamming, cars revving in the middle of the night. No one worked. We’re pretty sure the guy was dealing in stolen property. They fought all the time, usually in the front yard. The wife had the foulest mouth I have ever heard on any person & that included speaking to her children. We were actually going to move because of them, when they had to skip town because the husband & a couple of their “boarders” tried to kill a guy in the middle of the street after one of their parties. We were awakened at 6am by them beating him with a baseball bat & kicking him, etc. directly in front of our house. He almost died & has brain damage. We had a 6-foot bloodstain in the road for weeks ’til our neighbor poured a ton of bleach on it.

He’s a very good catcher. Digs a lot of balls out of the dirt and hustles like crazy. I can’t tell you how many opposing coaches have come up to our coach and told him how impressed they were with his hustle and ability.
His issue though is that he’s afraid of being hit by a bat or ball. Do you have any words of advice? If it’s good, I’ll pour you a double on the house!

Chris, I’ll tell you (and the rest of the interwebs) something I’ve never told anybody: I was scared of the ball in the field; I played SS through LL, and 13s, and staying in front of a ball, on bad fields, takes all the toughness of a catcher. Behind the dish, they give you stuff to stay in front of the ball. At 3B, it’s you, and a cup.
Mostly, baseball can be boring. Standing in RF, or at 2B, is like reading an Anders post. The only guys with any control of the game are the pitcher and catcher. And pitchers are weak-minded. A strong catcher, as any succcessful one is, controls the game.
And his teammates will respect him more than he can believe. It’s 90 degrees and 60% humidity, and he’s still hustling. That inspires. No 2B, with any sack, can whine about the conditions.
And the best feeling in the world, is being run over, and holding on to the ball, standing over the guy.
Can you tell I liked catching? Does it show?

BAS, here’s your double. Thank you. I’ll show this to Matt tomorrow.
His first practice with his new team was this morning. Only lasted three hours! In retrospect, I think that something his coach said might have bothered him. Coach was talking about not crying (remember, they are 11-12 years old). But he was specifically talking about crying when they strike out or do something dumb that they know hurts the team. He specifically mentioned that crying when you’re in physical pain is acceptable.
Several years ago I went to spring training and spent a few minutes speaking with Brandon Inge. He’s played multiple positions for the Tigers over the years. I believe he came up as a catcher but when I saw him he was just transitioning to 3b. I asked him about how much easier it must be for him and he said essentially what you just said. You and a cup.

I wanted to say, also, CK, that Inge is the perfect example, IMO, as to why any young player should remain at catcher for as long as possible.
Those skills translate to virtually any position on the field.
Murphy to the OF, Biggio to CF and 2B, even Berigan’s Simmons played some 3B and 1B, if I remember correctly. And there are hundreds of other examples.
Many less of 2B moving to catcher, or anywhere else, for that matter. Once guys move to “lesser” positions, it’s difficult to get out of that typecast. Think of Prado: good bat, but can’t get on the field.
The other blog has had some mention of late about a defensive spectrum (I believe it is Bill James’). Idea being that it’s more likely to move to an “easier” position than vice-versa.

Not that he’ll ever play, coach, or manage in the bigs, but look at how many former catchers have become managers? I just see his God given ability and don’t want to see him turn into a 2nd baseman. By the way, that’s where he spent a good portion of practice today and did very well. Unfortunately.

The baseball reasoning, and the raise your kid reasoning (as if you didn’t know, clearly out of my element here).
But, I guess I’m saying, your kid should do what makes him happy, right? Unless, and until, he’s beating guys up with his bat, down the street from FBG. Then, you gotta step in. A time-out, at least.

Two different things? I’d say they are related. He’s learning to assimilate into a team. That’s a big lesson in life, so not totally unrelated.
I want him to be happy. But, I don’t want him to walk away from something that he’s good at just because he’s hit what he thinks is a rough spot. Life is full of rough spots and what I perceive is that this is a short-term issue. Rough spots are what give us character and the strength to move forward with our lives. That which doesn’t kill us gives us character.
BTW, he only has permission to beat up anyone that provokes him first. I told him years ago that I’d stand beside him and protect him if he were ever in a fight IF that fight was provoked by someone else, of course. A few years ago a bully was picking on him almost every day. I told him to kick that kid’s ass the next time he picked on him. Sometimes you’ve got to earn some playground respect!

There in lies the parenting. There are many life lessons to be learned in sports. My job as a parent is to push my children to be the best they can be at whatever they are good at. Sometimes they find life hard — be it school, sports, or whatever. I have to push them to excel. But where is the line? At what point are they no longer able to max out there physical and mental abilities? It’s hard to say. When can they no longer match or exceed their peers? I don’t want either of my kids to ever look back and regret that they quit doing something because they thought they weren’t good enough at the time. I have too many regrets like that in my childhood.

CL, I don’t know if the doc recommended aspirin, or not, but the /500 part of the pill??? That’s usually a tylenol related product, believe it or not!!! Don’t know why they don’t mention that, so you can have 3 pain relievers bouncing into themselves, not good!!!
The 5/ part??? That really ain’t much. My Mom for her back, then her Cancer took 10/500 and more than one at a time. So, if you are in so much pain you can’t sleep, my suggestion would be to call the Doc, tell them this, and ask if you can at least take 2 of the weak pills, or get a stronger prescription. But find out if you should be taking aspirin with it… My Mom didn’t know for years that they tossed in the Tylenol, and didn’t do her body any favors taking 4 motrin on top of the pain pills….

Greetings and salutations fellow Stuffians… Well, after a very long day of driving, I have finally arrived in Charleston. I now remember why I hate to travel I-95 on the weekend. Josie wanted to stay in Sarasota another day and I should have listened to her. However, I felt so bad when I woke up this morning, all I could think about was getting home.
Things were really FUBAR yesterday and I was unable to connect with FBG as planned. Sorry Jennifer, but maybe when we come back in the fall we can work something out. Unless, you have moved to Tiger by then, we will come up with something….
I never thought I would say this but what a bad cruise… Very disappointing. If it were my first, I would definitely not go back. Perhaps Carnival has reached the point where they have become too large and they are no longer to adequately staff their ships.
Chris, give me a call in the morning. I am at the Marriott Residence Inn. The number is (843) 881-1599 RM 113. We were not able to get a room on the Isle of Palms. Forgot about spring break…. Good morning all, just went back to catch up on the blog. Good stuff guys and gals. Much good stuff in the post.
FBG, I have had some great experiences with Carnival before, perhaps it was the prevailing mood on the boat, could be the tough economic times. It was just a poor combination of things. It will be a while however before we cruise again. More likely we will take driving vacations.
It is cheaper to rent a house for a week.
Chris, you are right in not being sure when to stop pushing. The best guide is to think back to when you wish someone would have pushed you a little harder. I doubt any of us can remember being pushed over the top…. After all is said and done, we are only proud we survived it.
I have lots of catching stories, learned not to reach for the ball. 🙂 Learned a cup only prevents permanent injuries. Gives one a false sense of security sometimes. You also learn don’t leave home without it…. learned that the hurt from being hit by a ball does not last nearly as long as the hurt from failing to try…
Anyway… Life is hard, best learn now that in order to be able do the things you want to do, you sometimes have to do the things you don’t want to do…

Unfortunately for Moylan, his Australian buddy Phil Stockman once again finds himself dealing with an injury that could sideline him for an extended period. Whenever he extends his left leg during a delivery, the 6-foot-8 right-handed reliever feels a sensation that extends all the way down his leg.
The oft-injured Stockman believes he might be dealing with an ailment that will require surgery. He will gain better indication after undergoing an MRI exam later this week. His long string of health problems began after tearing his left hamstring in 2006.
“It’s frustrating for me to be hurt,” Stockman said. “But it’s the same problem. I’ve been rehabbing it for two years. I’ve tried everything and done everything the Braves have asked me to do rehab-wise, and it’s still there. So there’s nothing I can do to get the problem right. So now, I guess it’s up to them to go in there and get the problem right.” – Mark Bowman

We spent most of the day visiting our friend Dale(the friend that stayed with us for about 2 months late last year) He is in a hospital right now. I don’t know if I mentioned this before but he has ALS. Anyway, if that wasn’t enough, his diabetes, perhaps in conjunction with the ALS has been causing him nothing but trouble.
First, he had an infection in his big toe, which was removed, then a few weeks later it had spread all through his foot, (Perhaps because the first surgery did not get all the infection out of the bone) so he had to have leg amputated from the knee down.
He wanted us to pick up some clothes at his Mothers(She’s the one that kicked him out of the house last year-not mentally all there these days) and to take his car back to our house, as he will be in Warm Springs(Where Roosevelt used to go when he was President)for at least 2 weeks.
Dale has been quite positive dealing with a disease that he knows will likely kill him in less than 3 years. But this has gotten him down. Can you blame him??? He was still able to get around on his own, but after this….he will be trying to strengthen his limbs so he can walk with a prosthesis, but it will be a uphill battle. I fear he is going to be stuck in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
So, I guess if folks can say a little prayer for him. I hope he can get some enjoyment in what time is left…he just NOW, as in today is finally gotten his SSI after 3 years….

How sad this Texas girl had the encroachment on her second amendment rights so graphically illustrated. I see the honorable senator from New York was getting a little uncomfortable in his chair.

Steer clear of Anti-Virus-1. It’s a spyware thing-a-ma-bob, not a real antivirus program. I’ve been having problems with it for a week before I finally figured out what was going on. I started getting pop-ups saying I had 41 infections, and I needed to register an updated version of A-V-1 to remove the threats. I was skeptical, so I did some research and found it was bogus. Finally got it removed yesterday.
Here is an explanation I found:
“Anti-Virus-1 uses the common scam tactic of trying to scare or trick you into buying the full version of Anti-Virus-1. Anti-Virus-1 will falsely tell you that in order to remove the bogus threats you should buy the commercial version. Don’t be bamboozled by these con artists and do NOT buy the Anti-Virus-1 program. Remove and get rid of the Anti-Virus-1 infection right away”
“A rogue anti-spyware program is a program that uses spyware and other deceptive tools to trick you into purchasing their fake spyware remover. A rogue anti-spyware software will install a trojan on your machine to download the software. You’ll know you’re being tricked if you go to a website and an ad pops up that looks like a Windows notification message. Once you click on the ad’s OK button, this will direct you to the software’s website. In other cases, simply by clicking the cancel or close button can start the rogue anti-spyware program’s installation. Often, a rogue anti-spware program will display false positives (nonexistent spyware) when you use their spyware scanner. Some rogue anti-spyware software, like Anti-Virus-1 will automatically download the trial version without your knowledge.”

I had some weird computer issue when I tried to get on today. Black screen, in the DOS mode. Of course, I can’t recall what it said exactly 🙄 but it was something like the computer wasn’t able to…not system restore, but something like that, and I could try again, or do a reboot. I worried it would be a complete reboot, so I kept trying to take the easy way out. Problem kept coming up, so I shut the computer off a few times. Tried all the other “f” keys that showed up. Knew I had a disc I made months ago for rebooting, but didn’t know how much I would lose. So, was ready for the worst, put in a disc with no writing(Hoping it was that disc I needed) but after choosing reboot, screen came back up as normal, and everything was….Normal!!!

Free health advice, give me your free health advice.(Gil, you reading this? 😛 )
Man, I wish I had seen my Doc, instead of a PA yesterday.
I was sure it was a mole under my armpit that was the cause of pain yesterday, but she said after looking at it, and feeling my nodes, that my lymph nodes were swollen, and that was why I was feeling pain under my pit.
After I got home, I felt this sharp pain again, like the mole was getting pinched,(It it red on the tip, almost looks like it was twisted at some point?) I pressed all around and felt NO pain anywhere else, just when touching, or stretching the mole!(It’s about a 1/4 inch long, have one a half inch under my pit as well, I might be a world record mole! 😀 )
It would have to show up the day I go to the doc.
Of course, you read about moles, and they talk about Cancer being a big issue. I see no long thin moles when I look around the web, just those flat to bump like ones.
Always got to be different. But I was going to try to take the sucker off, but now I am worried that it might be some kind of Cancer. I really wish the P.A. had paid more attention to it.
Plus, reading about and looking at those pictures of Shingles, I don’t think I have that…could be wrong, but only 2 bumps, and on my arm??? They talk about waist, torso, face, back being the places it shows up. I have 2 bumps low on my forearm.
Get the feeling I will be spending moola I don’t have for more guesses.
To continue the whine, a skin doctor my Dad and I have been to in the past(Not many around for some reason) Well, when I was really suffering with a scalp condition a few years back, told them how bad it was, they said I could come in….about 3 months later!!!

Ber, find SOMEBODY to give that some serious attention. I had to go through SEVEN ‘reputable’ dermatologists to finally find one who took it seriously and actually treated the real problem.
Responses I got ranged through “you’re allergic to soap,” “poison ivy.” “I don’t know,” (at least he was honest!) “could be a staph infection; take this and if it clears up that’s what it is,” to the guy that said, “let’s get some lab work done; that will tell us a lot.” He ordered a huge battery of blood tests that tested for everything from A – Z. It all came back clear. Diagnosis: stress. And he was right.

Hi, Chris! I found it so honest; those ‘lawmakers’ certainly SHOULD squirm in the face of open, factual testimony. People, including her mother and father, would be alive IF she had had her pistol in her purse. The pistol that was removed because of new regulations prohibiting the carriage in a purse.
With extremely few exceptions, I have now join the ranks of those who believe that ALL current ‘lawmakers’ should be ousted, and TERM LIMITS must be immediately instituted.

Ber, CL is right, I don’t think the swelling on your wrist is a big deal but I would be very cautious with the mole. It can be removed and tested in a flash. It might just be where it is located that allows it to be irritated but why take the chance?

By the way, I equate congressional hearings with “show trials”.
I have never once seen where it made a difference on how the testimony given, pro on con, changed the opinions held by the questioners. More proof that the term “public servant” is another example of how the minders wish to spin the perception that lawmakers are actually making some sort of sacrifice by serving in government.

Really interesting comment by DOB today – the original question was: what is Jimy Williams’ role with the Braves:
David O’Brien
March 11th, 2009
1:45 pm
Rodney, Jimy doesn’t have a title, so you can call him a spring-training special instructor. Sort of like Phil Niekro (Knucksie’s also in camp, helping out here and there, talking to the kids, helping his nephew learn the knuckleball in minor league camp, etc.)
As has been noted, the Braves tentatively plan to have Greg Maddux as an instructor next spring. (He’s serving in a similar role with the Padres this spring; Bobby Cox said Padres beat him to the punch.)

I remember reading a story about him messing with Jeff Bagwell during a spring training game some years back. He put something on the ball, spit I think, to make it do something weird. Anyway, the ball DID do something weird and Bags didn’t know what to think of it. Apparently, all season long that was in his mind every time he faced Maddux. He’s a genius, at least in the baseball sense of the word.

A little political story. Charles Freeman, “slated to become the top U.S. intelligence analyst withdrew from consideration Tuesday, and quickly let loose with an angry statement denouncing the “Israel Lobby” for “character assassination.”
Didn’t make much news…for some reason. More from the WSJ story, last paragraph…
Critics on Capitol Hill welcomed Mr. Freeman’s decision. Sen. Charles Schumer (D., N.Y.) said he urged the White House behind the scenes to drop Mr. Freeman because “his statements against Israel were way over the top and severely out of step with the administration.” Among the comments Mr. Freeman made on Israel in a 2007 speech was: “Israel is even more despised and isolated than we are, and together with the Israelis we are rapidly multiplying the ranks of terrorists with regional and global reach.”

I knew there was something I was going to mention earlier. Baseball tonight is back, and last night they had the hitting coach for the Rangers on, talking a bit about hitting. Very smart guy, you can tell that in about 30 seconds of listening to him. Did you all know he worked a some with Frenchy??? Did someone here post that, and I missed it??? They had a quote from Frenchy saying for the first time in a year, he can see the sinker inside, with his new stance. Well, Eric Young was breaking down Frenchy’s swing a bit as well. Showing the before and after. Showed how his stance was open a bit, to see the ball better with both eyes, how his legs were not as far spread apart, and how he was holding the bat differently, just just resting it on his shoulders and then bringing it up.
I noticed two things as well(From their split screen) the bat wasn’t as straight up and down, more in the typical barrel pointing to the pitcher a bit, and it looked like his elbows were closer to his chest, and it just looked more relaxed, more natural. Should be very interesting to see what he is able to do this year!!!

Good afternoon all, Yes, they mention the thing about Frenchy on the MLB channel the other night, some of them seemed upset that a coach for one team would hire himself out to a player on another team. Of course my take is unless you have a contract with states exclusivity then it’s okay. The more interesting thing is having to go outside the organization to begin with. Could it be what most of us dumb bloggers have already stated repeatedly that Terry P is just not the guy you need as a hitting coach. If you want to keep him on the staff, make him a bench coach or something….

Good vibs coming out of spring training though, nice to have such a stellar record. 11-2 as I write but I temper my enthusiasm with the knowledge it is only early spring training and 6 or 7 of the Brave’s primary players are not even in camp. Same goes for other teams with players in the WBC.
Still, it is good to know there is some depth in the organization
I would not mind so much being the 70s Dodgers or the Reds of the 80s. Teams that had more players than places for them to play. It would sure beat what the Braves went thru last year.

from Yahoo! Sports:
The Braves’ Jeff Francoeur was 2-for-2, his third straight two-hit game, and is batting .333 after a 3-for-20 start. He has yet to strike out in 28 at-bats after fanning 111 times during a dismal 2008 in which he batted .239 with 11 homers and 71 RBIs and spent time in the minors.
“It’s not even so much the hits as it is just feeling comfortable,” Francoeur said. “I’m not trying to hit home runs, I’m not trying to hit balls off the wall. It makes you excited about what’s to come in the season.”
Francoeur said Pujols complimented him at first base after one of the hits.
“He told me, ‘You look great, you look relaxed,”’ Francoeur said. “It feels good for people to notice.”
continuing…
Wainwright retired the Braves’ first three hitters in order three times, requiring only eight pitches to get through the first inning. The rest of the Atlanta lineup was 6-for-12 against the right-hander, including three straight singles in fourth by Francoeur, Matt Diaz and Martin Prado to produce Atlanta’s lone run.
Prado was 3-for-3, raising his average to .310.
Wainwright welcomed the challenge from the Braves, who entered with a major league-best .306 batting average—eight points better than the second-place Cardinals—and an eight-game winning streak.
“The difference between a good start or a bad start several times during the season is making one pitch when you need to, or two pitches,” Wainwright said. “I had some jams that could have gotten bad and I was able to make some pitches.”

I thought I’d place a quote from the guy across the street here, because it sounds familiar:
I heard someone at the batting cage today compare him to Philly’s Shane Victorino, in the way that they both fly around the bases, take the extra base, go hard after balls in the outfield, and on and on.
I thought it was a great comparison.
Victorino provides a spark for the Phillies, an intangible that team members will tell you was crucial to their winning the World Series. It’s infectious.
Have I not been saying that for 2 months? If he hung out over here any at all, he’d be ahead of the curve… 😎

I missed this last Thursday, being busy and all, but it deserves a second look. This was from Bowman’s blog:
When I entered the clubhouse this morning, I saw Boone Logan’s left hand adorned with gauze. Naturally, I responded with, “Have you been playing with Blaine Boyer’s apple slicer.”
Logan said that he regularly places gauze on his hand in the morning. After imitating Rafael Soriano with a stone-faced reaction, I later saw the big left-handed reliever on the field without any gauze, tape or padding on his hand. With this I further concluded that southpaws are simply a different species.

The American Legion Strongly Opposed to President’s Plan to Charge Wounded Heroes for Treatment
WASHINGTON, March 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The leader of the nation’s largest veterans organization says he is “deeply disappointed and concerned” after a meeting with President Obama today to discuss a proposal to force private insurance companies to pay for the treatment of military veterans who have suffered service-connected disabilities and injuries. The Obama administration recently revealed a plan to require private insurance carriers to reimburse the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in such cases.
“It became apparent during our discussion today that the President intends to move forward with this unreasonable plan,” said Commander David K. Rehbein of The American Legion. “He says he is looking to generate $540-million by this method, but refused to hear arguments about the moral and government-avowed obligations that would be compromised by it.”
The Commander, clearly angered as he emerged from the session said, “This reimbursement plan would be inconsistent with the mandate ‘ to care for him who shall have borne the battle’ given that the United States government sent members of the armed forces into harm’s way, and not private insurance companies. I say again that The American Legion does not and will not support any plan that seeks to bill a veteran for treatment of a service connected disability at the very agency that was created to treat the unique need of America’s veterans!”
Commander Rehbein was among a group of senior officials from veterans service organizations joining the President, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki and Steven Kosiak, the overseer of defense spending at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The group’s early afternoon conversation at The White House was precipitated by a letter of protest presented to the President earlier this month. The letter, co-signed by Commander Rehbein and the heads of ten colleague organizations, read, in part, ” There is simply no logical explanation for billing a veteran’s personal insurance for care that the VA has a responsibility to provide. While we understand the fiscal difficulties this country faces right now, placing the burden of those fiscal problems on the men and women who have already sacrificed a great deal for this country is unconscionable.”
Commander Rehbein reiterated points made last week in testimony to both House and Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committees. It was stated then that The American Legion believes that the reimbursement plan would be inconsistent with the mandate that VA treat service-connected injuries and disabilities given that the United States government sends members of the armed forces into harm’s way, and not private insurance companies. The proposed requirement for these companies to reimburse the VA would not only be unfair, says the Legion, but would have an adverse impact on service-connected disabled veterans and their families. The Legion argues that, depending on the severity of the medical conditions involved, maximum insurance coverage limits could be reached through treatment of the veteran’s condition alone. That would leave the rest of the family without health care benefits. The Legion also points out that many health insurance companies require deductibles to be paid before any benefits are covered. Additionally, the Legion is concerned that private insurance premiums would be elevated to cover service-connected disabled veterans and their families, especially if the veterans are self-employed or employed in small businesses unable to negotiate more favorable across-the-board insurance policy pricing. The American Legion also believes that some employers, especially small businesses, would be reluctant to hire veterans with service-connected disabilities due to the negative impact their employment might have on obtaining and financing company health care benefits.
“I got the distinct impression that the only hope of this plan not being enacted,” said Commander Rehbein, “is for an alternative plan to be developed that would generate the desired $540-million in revenue. The American Legion has long advocated for Medicare reimbursement to VA for the treatment of veterans. This, we believe, would more easily meet the President’s financial goal. We will present that idea in an anticipated conference call with White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel in the near future.
“I only hope the administration will really listen to us then. This matter has far more serious ramifications than the President is imagining,” concluded the Commander.

Now baseball…. Wow, some finish to the USA vs Puerto Rico game last night. I kept thinking, the Mets are going to be tough… A lot of clutch type guys on that team with Beltron, DelGuado and Wright… Of course it still all come down to pitching.
The talking heads on the MLB network are predicting an 85 win season for the Braves and a third place finish in the NL East. Well, good to see they are predicting a turn around of sorts for the Los Bravos but I think it is going to come down to who can stay healthy, much like last year. Last year’s team was not all that bad, just decimated by injuries. Most of the starting pitching could have fill the role as extras in a M.A.S.H. movie without having to change their bandages…
And still more baseball, a group of Richmonders have made the move to purchase a AA franchise in the Eastern League. I confess I know next to nothing about the league and the teams in it but I guess I will learn.

I read some things on the Corrine Brown clip in the comments…I remembered one thing, but wasn’t sure if it was her, or someone else…it was ol’ Corrine. From Jacksonville she is! Thank goodness I was a few miles away in Orange Park for 10 years, and not her district…
In the 1960s, Woody Allen, working on Candid Camera, used Freedonia as a practical joke by asking passersby what they thought of the bid for independence for Freedonia. In the 1990s, the satirical magazine Spy pulled a practical joke on several members of the United States Congress. The magazine successfully convinced several Congressional members, such as Corrine Brown, to issue statements condemning the “ethnic cleansing in Freedonia,” without their realizing that Freedonia was a fictional country.
