109: Fodder For Brave Thoughts

by Voice of Reason Raisins

Well, with little fanfare, and almost no chatter, the Braves FOT’s (Front Office Types) held their annual organizational meetings last week in their Disney home away from home. Typically, I suppose, it’s not really newsworthy to most, but to news junkies like us, well like me at least, it is on my radar. It’s the time of year where they map out their general plan for the offseason – you know, where they say, “OK, this is what we have, this is what we need to let go, this what we need to bring in, and this is what we have to spend.”

Granted, not generally exciting stuff, but I sure do wish I could sit in on them and voice a few of my own opinions. What would I say? Glad you asked…

Position by position:

Jason Heyward

JHey

* We can start with the certainties. Catcher, 1B, 2B, 3B, CF and RF. They can talk all they want about RF being an open competition. There’s a Greek word for that… baloney. That will be JHey’s for as long as he wears a tomahawk.

Joey Terdoslavich

* What to do in left field? Well, JTerd (Joey Terdoslavich),  currently  a 1B, is tearing up the AFL. He hits for both power and average, and is being strongly considered for a  position change to LF. 1B seems to be  occupied for a while. But he will start 2012 in AA, and isn’t even on the radar for competing for a spot on the 25. We need to acquire a veteran guy who is a proven hitter. Frank’s track record says it won’t be through FA. A trade is a’comin’. What about Martin? Martin Prado is one of the best utility guys in either league. He is just a mediocre everyday outfielder. He would benefit the Braves better back in the super-utility role.

*Bench? Welcome back Martin; see ya Conrad; please rebound Big Hinske; and get a hit, would ya Matty? Rossy is thankfully back, too. We need a backup SS, though. Maybe we address that after we address the starting SS…

Gonzo

* Which brings me to SS. I’ll bet that Gonzo returns on a 1 year deal. He’d probably like a 2 year deal, but I honestly don’t think he’ll get that anywhere, and not from ATL either. Love his glove. His bat could do more, but he wins you games with his D. Pitchers love him.

Kris Medlen

* Even though the bullpen wore down toward season’s end, I think you still have most of it already in place. Gone is Line Drive Linebrink. Gone is Scott Proctor. Gone is George Sherrill. The ineffectiveness of those 3 forced Fredi to go to his horses more often. Peter finally made it back for a few appearances before his shoulder turned to lunch meat. His tenure with the Braves is done. His cost now exceeds his benefit. Look for him to be released. But we welcome back Kris Medlen,

Arodys Vizcaino

and Arodys Vizcaino proved he is a capable MLB pitcher. I won’t be surprised to see Arodys slide into EOF’s 7th inning role, allowing EOF to move around and make the pen a bit more versatile. Jonny and Special K return to their shut down roles. Martinez was very good at times in his long relief role, and I see no reason to believe he won’t return to the same. So 1 spot remains… DLowe?

Anthony Varvaro

God, I hope not. I think Anthony Varvaro earned it, though many think that Cory Gearrin would fit Peter’s old “ground ball specialist” role. I can see that. That will likely be a spring training battle.

Derek Lowe

* DLowe has to go… even if only for the clichéd “bag o’ balls”. The truth is, he still has value, if not $15MM worth. But he is a veteran hurler who can adjust and can still pitch effectively at times. Remember the near no-hitter earlier this season? Yes, that was this season. That said, he has worn out his welcome in Atlanta, and would likely benefit from the proverbial change of scenery. The only real question is how much $$$ are the Braves willing to eat in order to move him? I’ve already beat this mule and won’t rehash it here.

Tim Hudson

* Finally, we must address the rotation. Huddy is the clear #1 ace. Beachy is only getting better, and Minor proved he belongs… and is the only lefty there. Obviously, there are injury

Brandon Beachy

concerns surrounding both JJ and Tommy. That’s too bad. We needed one of those guys as a trade chip this offseason. Can’t do it now, you’d just get pennies back on the dollar. But Julio Teheran has nothing left to prove at AAA, and Delgado established himself in his big league starts as well. Too many starters… it’s a good problem to have.

Mike Minor

Julio Teheran

But if you’re Frank, it’ll give you even more grey hair. There will be more scrutiny over what he does here than anywhere else on the roster. That’s a tough call.

Randall Delgado

If  it were me, I’d take it to spring, prove one of either JJ or Tommy are healthy, and find a team desperate for a starter.

That’s where you’ll find your LF.

Thanks, V! I hate that it has turned out this way for DLowe. He’s a very hard worker – and we know he wanted to do well. Let’s hope JHey can regroup before spring.

Great opine as usual Raisins. I always respect and enjoy your insight.

How much of D Lowe’s salary would the Braves be willing to eat? My bet is at least $7 million which is what it cost to have Kershin ride the bus in AA Pearl.

Ever notice that “tired arm syndrome” strikes at the most inopportune time?

To be honest, I cannot lay it all on the Braves pitching nor Freddie G for the burn out of the bullpen. A lot of what you see is the results of a very anemic offense.

Speaking of which… don’t you know that Texas is still relishing the Texieria trade to Atlanta… Think we could get that kind of return for anyone in the Braves organization right now????

Speaking of JJ and TommyH, our intrepid beat writer across the street tweets that Scott “I am Berigan’s favorite person” Boras has told him neither has or will require any kind of surgery, arthroscopic or invasive, this winter. Both are expected to be at full strength by Spring Training.

Been sick for more than two weeks, now my Dad is sick….just doesn’t want to let go. Makes my weak brain even…weaker. 😦

    Anyway…V, JTerd (Joey Terdoslavich)….umm, I sure hope that doesn’t stick! 😉
I love the optimism you and Gil have about trading DLowe away, and finding a team to take half of his contract.
    Kawakami
    2009 7 W 12 L 3.86 ERA
    2010 1 W 10 L 5.15 ERA
7.3 Mil contract… now 36 YO. No takers, couldn’t even trade him and save say 1 Mil?

    DLowe
    2010 16 W 12 L 4.00 ERA (saved by great Sept, 4.67 ERA in 2008 with braves
2011 9 W 17 L 5.05 ERA . (6.20 ERA post all star break, 8.75 ERA in September!!!!!)39 Y.O. In June. Owed 15 Mil. GM saying he won’t be a starter. What GM in their right mind is going to take on more than say, 2-3 Mil tops on him???
I think Wren was talking tough since it’s what we the fans needed to hear at the time. Liberty won’t want to pay 15 mil to a guy not playing, IMO.
So, I bet if he has even a so-so spring he will be clogging up the rotation trying to build up “value” for a trade…

Good points there, Ber. But I will rebut with this:

If they’ll park KK’s butt in Mississippi for 2 years and eat $15MM, don’t you think they’d eat $9MM to send DLowe elsewhere? And sadly, in this outlandish salary era, $6-7MM for a veteran pitcher, even one as past his prime as DLowe, is not a reach. Too much money in the pie, not enough pitching. Heck, the Reds paid Bronson Arroyo more than $11MM last season and he was worse than DLowe! 😯

The most Dale Murphy ever made in a season as a Brave was $2MM in 1990. The Phils did bump him to $2.5MM for each of ’91 & ’92. Phil Niekro’s highest salaried season was just $600K in 1985 as a Yankee. Those guys missed the gravy train.

    Craziness…

Yay, someone else talkin’ baseball! 🙂

V, it’s true the reds screwed up, but it was after 2 good years…now they are stuck with him for 2 more years…
Arroyo’s contract will be worth $35 million, making him one of the highest-paid players on the team. It’s comparable to the three-year, $33 million contract signed by Ted Lilly with the Dodgers earlier in the offseason, and it’s also similar to the deal Jorge de la Rosa recently signed with the Rockies.

The 33-year-old Arroyo threw 215.2 innings over 33 starts last year with the Reds, posting a 3.88 ERA that was up just a tick from 2009’s 3.84. While Arroyo isn’t known for his strikeouts or pinpoint command, he throws a broad array of pitches to keep batters off balance, and he excels at soaking up a lot of innings. Arroyo has reached or exceeded the 200-inning mark for six consecutive seasons.

You know I have my issues with MLBTR (as I am sure you and Gil do) great for trade rumors, other stories…

Under non tender candidates earlier today….
Every rotation needs innings guys, and this year Saunders tallied 215 including a playoff start. Throw in a 3.69 ERA and how could the D’Backs be thinking about cutting Saunders for no return?

First there’s the price tag, which we project at a hefty $8.7MM. That’d represent a $3.2MM raise as Saunders enters his last season before free agency. Then there’s that ERA, which doesn’t seem representative of Saunders’ skills. His SIERAs have consistently been in the 4.70 range. Saunders is a hittable, low-strikeout pitcher who can be prone to the longball. Finally there’s Arizona’s depth; they might have young starters who can provide similar performance for the league minimum, if not the innings.

Trading or non-tendering Saunders would greatly add to the D’Backs’ payroll flexibility, though they don’t have huge needs. Would at least one team feel that Saunders is worth $8-9MM on a one-year deal, and also give up a minor leaguer for him? I find it unlikely. Saunders is similar to a healthy Jon Garland, and the open market repeatedly valued Garland close to $5MM.
    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/10/non-tender-candidate-joe-saunders.html

Saunders is only 30, pitched 200 + innings, and had a 3.69 ERA (SIERAs in the 4.70 range, WTH??? here’s what his pretend era should be?) playing half his games in a hitters park.
So, IF the Diamondbacks don’t keep him….IF he and Garland are worth “only” 5 Mil…big IF’s….then what is Lowe, and his 6.20 ERA after the all star break worth to another team??? That’s why I think he has to have a good spring, and a good April with the team before anything can happen….

Question of the day (and given the light traffic here lately, maybe question of the week):

Would you give up a prospect to the Yankees for potentially only 1 year of Nick Swisher, if they’d also take back DLowe and at least half of his salary? If yes, what level prospect do you think would get it done? Pitcher or other, like the above mentioned Christian Bethancourt?

I gotta say, Nick Swisher in LF would make a tremendous impact on the lineup.

  13. 13 Voice of Raisins October 20, 2011 at 7:52 am

    Nick Swisher numbers for 2011:

    .260 AVG (.232 vs. RHP, .327 vs. LHP), .374 OBP, 23 HR, 85 RBI

Nicky is a switch hitter who mostly batted 5th or 6th in the vaunted Yankee lineup. While you might like to see more RBI, there were a lot of runs already cleaned off the bases by Granderson (119 RBI), Cano (118 RBI) and Tex (111 RBI) before Nicky ever came to the plate.

    Imagine this lineup:

    1. CF – Michael Bourn (L)
    2. 1B – Freddie (L)
    3. 3B – Chipper (S)
    4. 2B – Uggla (R)
    5. C – Mac (L)
    6. LF – Nick Swisher (S)
    7. RF – JHey (L)
    8. SS – Gonzo (R)

And yes… Swisher has played in 117 games in his career at LF.

Of course, his 2012 salary is $10.25MM… 🙄

But you lose KK’s $7.5MM black hole, and under my scenario, will get back at least a $5MM net savings on DLowe, if not $6MM.

There will likely be a sliding scale of what the Yanks would pay in DLowe’s salary based on the talent level of the prospect returned (the Yankees’ real interest here). For interest, for P JJ Hoover, we would have to eat almost all of the salary. For Bethancourt, maybe half, or less. For Delgado… it better be a majority. Following me here? The better the prospect, the more salary they take on.

To me, the real question is: do you make the trade for potentially only 1 year of Swisher?

    I still haven’t answered that for myself…

DLowe would have a much better year if he could pitch for a team where there is enough offense to cover a mistake or two.

My expectations of any return for DLowe other than some salary relief is pretty low.

The Braves should be so lucky as to make a pick up like the Gnats did last season in Mike “The Hammer” Morse. I thought he raked in spring training and he never stopped. There are guys out there who could help the Braves but it is such a crap shoot because you never know when an injury is going to jump up and bite them in the butt.

The mention in the AJC that MRIs on J-Hey’s shoulder and spine were negative are still indicative there was a problem with him and it explains much of what ailed him. He was starting to come around in the last month of the season. His average was not all that great but even to an amateur like me, I could see a difference in his swing. Much like Jason Bay of the Mets… but different…

I;m not making any bets on this year’s World Series but I think the Cards developed a real mental toughness in the month of September after chasing down the Braves. When talking about how they beat the Brewers and the Phillies to get to the WS, let’s not forget they also swept the Braves in their last series with the Bravo’s St Louis.

    Speaking of JHey…

Yep, I think injuries had some to do with JHey’s sub-par season, but there were other factors as well. I cannot remember where I read this – it was fairly recent – but Chipper pointed out to JHey early in the season that his swing was long and loopy and that pitchers would exploit it by busting him inside where he couldn’t get his hands in. Chipper suggested an adjustment whereby Jason could move his hands more freely and cover some of the hole in his swing. Jason’s injuries didn’t give him the proper ability to work on making that adjustment and making it consistent. You could see it by September, though, resulting in more contact and less K’s.

My question, and apparently Frank’s too, is why was Chipper helping Jason with this adjustment? Where was Larry Parrish?

Folks, Chipper has a much greater impact on this team than just between the white lines. He is gonna sorely be missed when he hangs up his spikes…

Normally I am not a fan of Bradley’s writing, but I absolutely love this quote:

The Braves, believe it or not, are very close to a World Series. They’ll need to get beyond the memory of this season’s fold, but that’s why there’s an offseason. They had enough talent to win 89 games in a season when they didn’t hit a lick, and they have enough to offer in trade that they can go buy whatever they lack. If even a few of those hitters return to form, they won’t lack much. Why, they even have a leadoff man now. Can world domination be far behind?

V, that’s interesting you talking about Swisher….I was just reading the other day how the White Sox may trade Carlos Quintin since he too is a free agent after next season….now, they clearly aren’t taking DLowe off our hands, so we would have to give up more…and checking out his stats, can you believe he’s never played more than 131 games in a season??? Just looked at Swisher’s numbers…. .254 Career BA. But he sure walks a lot. and you make a good point about how the bases were often clear when he was batting….

An observation… I am of the belief that Marteen Prado became a little too aware of trying to hit behind the runner, moving a guy over, allowing guys an opportunity to steal and forgot the basic tenant of hitting is to hit the ball where it is pitched. Like Yogi used to say about some of his batters, “they are thinking too much and hurting the team”.

Sometimes it is okay to be cerebral during in at bat but when it all comes down to it, you have to make contact. Trying to hit 5 run homers in the 1st inning is not where you want to go. How many time last season would we have been overjoyed just to see a guy it a sac fly or even a ground ball to deep short only to what the “Crazy Train” of pop-up, strike out or weak ground out to the pitcher?

And would the Rangers even be in the playoffs without “The Trade”?
Harrison pitches tonight or tomorrow…even he and Feliz don’t bother me….too much (though they would make great trade pieces wouldn’t they?) But Elvis stings. When retired players were half kidding about wanting his autograph in the low minors…you knew he was special…..

What’s the old saying about you only as good as your next day’s starting pitcher?

Rangers look sharp last night. The slug fest Saturday night reminded me of some of the Braves/Yankees match ups in the 90s’.

Big game tonight, winner tonight has the best chance of winning it all…

I think I am wondering what it would take to get Elvis back? Boy, has that ship sailed or what? I’m hoping the Braves can make the same kind of deal for Hanson or JJ when the time comes. I am wondering if the Rangers kissed John Schuerholz after that trade? Because in the end, he sure got screwed….

So, the Braves sign a new hitting coach. Actually, co-coaches… Saying a guy has trouble communicating with hitters… Wow, so simple, do it this way or sit on the bench until you figure it out… I guess I come form the old school of coach to player communications, I never had time to say please and thank you either…
I did know how to say ‘you’re gone’ though…

Tony may be a great manager, but he’ll also make excuses in a heartbeat. And he’ll throw his coaches under the bus pretty quick, too. Whining about crowd noise is a little beneath him, IMO. But then again, he places himself on as high a pedestal as the national media does, so…

Just say, “Hey, they were the better team tonight. You gotta tip your hat; they got the hits when they needed them. We’ll go back home and get ’em there in Game 6.” Oh, wait… that’s what Bobby would have said – and gotten skewered for. But it would have been the classy thing to do.

And I’ll come out and say it. I don’t buy it. LaRussa says he called for Motte, but Lilliquist heard, “Zep”. LaRussa says he called for Motte, but Lilliquist heard, “Lynne”. There are no similarities there. LaRussa says Lynne wasn’t even supposed to pitch last night; the bullpen coach would have known that as well. I don’t buy it. I think Tony pulled a boner, and can’t allow himself to admit it. I hate excuses.

Seriously… I don’t care if he’s standing under a jet engine. “Zep” and “Lynne” and “Motte” are not even remotely close. At all.

It’ll be interesting to see if Tony’s ego gets in the way of Game 6. He’s already tossed a coach and 2 pitchers under the bus. I sense a little unraveling…

I thought Napoli was clutch last night.

Crowd noise? Seriously? Maybe he needs to manage in Miami, pretty sedate there….

I thought it was another good game. Ron Washington got smart too, walking Albert.

And of course the local minor league team ( The Flying Squirrels) is whining about the lack of progress on a new stadium here in the ‘River City’. Okay, let’s pull $50 million out of the public coffers to support minor league ball…. NOT…

That ship sailed when the economy went into the tank… I just don’t see where the current stadium is in need of a replacement. Sure, new is great but do you really need to build a new venue every 20 years or so?

The city and the team would be better served just improving the parking and putting in multiple entrances to the current park. What. it cost too much for extra ticket sellers?

Anyway, I still have not been to a game here, a new stadium is not the reason for my absence. Schedule conflicts with the Braves on TV…

I still will go to some of the high school games here, the stadium is not the issue…

Gil, I always thought Napoli should have been used more by Mike Scioscia, but Scioscia just flat out didn’t like him for some reason. One year, the bulk of the catching was done by a guy hitting .200.
Don’t know if it was game calling or what…cuz I always see him blocking the plate well, hitting well, and as Allan Craig will tell you, he throws well too….

And, as expected, the Braves have moved former SS Matt Lipka to CF in the instructional league. From what I have read, he has excelled there (to no one’s surprise.) He will play CF in the minors next season.

Also, in a bit if a surprise, JTerd is getting some time at 3B in the AFL. That’s actually what he was drafted as before moving across the diamond to 1B. What would not have been a surprise would be to see him in LF. I suppose that the AFL is not the place to try something for the 1st time, though…

On the Braves front, I am over the rookie who can’t miss hype…. While I am encouraged, I know these kids are still years away from being productive consistently.

Congratulations also go out to Tony LaRussa who is going out on top. I was rooting for the Rangers but they had their chances. The Cards earned their victory so good for them. 2012 Braves rotation, in no particular order:

    Huddy
    Beachy
    JJ
    THanson
    Minor

Now, the question still remains: does one of JJ or THanson get traded to fill an offensive need [read: LF]? Dudes and dudettes, you still have Teheran and Delgado ready to make the team. Neither has anything left to prove or to learn at AAA.

2012 rotation could very well be:

    Huddy
    Beachy
    1 of JJ or Hanson
    Minor
    1 of Teheran or Delgado

Don’t forget about Medlin, Raisins. He may still build up arm strength to serve as a starter. To be sure, he would be a welcome ‘relief’ for the over taxed bullpen.

I expect Wren and company to employ at least one grizzled veteran for the Braves pen. For sure, the best relief for the Braves pitching staff would be some offense to allow for the starters to go deeper into the game and fewer extra inning games.

2 games later he held the Yankees to 2 runs over 8 innings(I thought he pitched a complete game against them-thats why I was looking up his stats)
the very next game he went 8 innings against Toronto, then worn and tired, he only went 7 innings the game after against Cleveland. Remind me how many times DLowe went 6 innings or more ???
You know, he may have been overworked a bit. Not that he didn’t give up a run or 5 in a game, but this just blows my mind…in the first 16 starts he made in 2010, he went 6 or more innings 14 times!!!!

Just ruminating over a few very unusual thoughts this morning…

I read where SF’s “beet writer” penned that Carlos Beltran could be re-signed by the Giants on a 2-year deal with a vesting option for a 3rd, with the stipulation that he play left field.

It makes me wonder… can you imagine the Braves lineup with Beltran in LF and batting 2nd? Here’s my litany of “what if’s”:
-> What of he signed with the Braves as their primary LF.
-> What if Martin Prado became the super-sub again?
-> What if both Beltran and Chipper got regular time off, guaranteeing Prado regular paying time, and saving 4 old legs for the whole season?
->What if Chipper and Beltran played 3 games out of every 4, and Prado played those 2 games out of every 4 on a regular basis, being the 1 each in LF and at 3B?
-> What if Beltran could occasionally spell JHey in RF, allowing Prado to get yet another day in the lineup every now and then?

Do I think there’s any chance that the Braves would sign a FA of Beltran’s stature and cost? No. Nada. Nyet. Not a prayer. And I think that so many moving parts would give Fredi a headache since one breakdown of one part would throw the whole thing outta whack. But in a perfect world…

Then again, in a perfect world, Chipper’s legs would be young again, and Prado would blossom into the next Ricky Henderson.

Now… back to reality. Josh Willingham? Ryan Ludwick? Sadly, I don’t even think that’s realistic. Unless Prado is traded, he’ll be back in LF.

When was the last time we had a LF that pitchers feared? I go all the way back to Ryan Klesko. Seriously. Am I wrong?

Then again, maybe a healthy Prado can rebound. Still, I think Marteen lets his brain get in the way of his athletic ability…

One thing that worries me about trading Jurrjens and Prado now, is that the Braves are trading at low value…I can’t recall too many pitchers coming off injuries (granted, this is leg issues) being traded for a nice package, like Greinke was. Of course, if Jurrjens and Prado were playing like they have in the past, it would be really hard to trade them, wouldn’t it???

Live by the trade, die by the trade… I can’t really see how an increase of a few million to Prado and Jurrjens over what they currently make is really the reason for these rumors. I think the real issue is what the Braves expect out of JJ and the fact that Prado’s position (second base) is occupied… Do you really pay a utility guy 5 mil?

I think the real issue is what the Braves expect out of JJ and the fact that Prado’s position (second base) is occupied

I think that is the exact impetus (FOB?) for floating Prado’s name out there. His best position is 2B, and All-Star 2B’s (past or present) are not exactly a dime a dozen. His value, even coming off an injury, is likely as high as it’ll be. The higher his arb figure goes, the less teams will even give a sniff. If he’s to be traded, it’s gotta be now.

As for JJ, it’s a darn shame he couldn’t get back for 1 or 2 starts by season’s end. Had he made it back and even closely resembled his first half self, he could return a Greinke-like haul. Now, it’s a matter of whether teams are desperate enough for pitching, and whether or not you can get a couple of teams bidding against each other.

Is it smart to trade away a potential Cy Young (if he can put together an entire campaign) candidate? You can’t keep Teheran and Delgado down in AAA any more. Somebody’s gotta go…

Ber… good questions regarding the starters.

I see it this way. Neither Minor nor Beachy had ever had a season that lasted as long as a major league season, and therefor could not be accustomed to pitching near 200 innings. But that has now changed. As you said, Minor pitched close to 180 with minor/major combined, and didn’t show the late season fatigue that he showed in 2010. That is a great sign. He should be able to move close to 200 as a full time starter in 2012. As for Beachy, he did miss time with injury. Barring another injury in 2012, he should be able to pitch 180 or above. And his arm motion is so free and easy, he doesn’t incur the same kind of fatigue that Tommy Hanson might. Speaking of Big Red, hard to say. No one knows what’s up with the shoulder. But, all that said, having Medlen back in the pen will spare a good bit of overuse of EOF, Jonny and Kimbrell. Plus, I believe that alot was learned during 2011. Replacing Linebrink with Vizcaino, replacing Sherril with Medlen, replacing Proctor with Varvaro will all ease the wear and tear on what turned out to be only 3 reliable relievers in 2011. (No disrespect to Martinez; he was the dedicated mop up guy.) Honestly, Medlen could be used in any pen role except closer, as could Vizcaino including closer. There should not be the same kind of absolute reliance on the 3 hosses as in 2011.

As for JJ’s 152 innings… either Julio or Randall can easily match those. You won’t lose anything there.

Medlin could close too if it came to that, he looked pretty good at the end of the two games he appear in this fall. Proves you don’t have to throw 99mph. Just have more than one pitch and keep it close around the plate.

Nope, pitching is not the problem for the Braves, hitting is.. Of course, unless you expect your staff to hurl 162 shutouts, you better find somebody who can drive in runs.

Looks like Rockies are at least mildly pursuing Prado. I sit in the middle on this. I am for it as long as we “win” in the trade – getting a top piece in return. I am against trading for the sake of trading. The guy was decent even when injured. Granted, I want excellent in LF, but it could be worse. If they trade straight up for Seth Smith, who is a platoon guy at best, I’ll scream.

Jim Powell asserts that a trade of Prado creates 3 holes – 1 in LF, 1 at 3B, and the largest 1 in the clubhouse.

The more the merrier CL…. No use screaming from the mountain tops when all you hear is an echo. Pretty soon you only hear yourself talk…

Raisins, It is also of my opinion that Prado should not be dealt just for the sake of payroll. He is a proven major leaguer now, other than shortstop, I think you could likely plug him in anywhere. It is my opinion that last season was an aberration for him at the plate. Still made a lot of contact but lots of at’em balls.

Sometimes the hardest thing to do is think too much and not take what the pitcher is throwing you.

You know, Gil… I think I have to agree. I too think 2011 was the exception, not the norm. Prado is more than just a LF to the Braves, and he would probably be tough to replace unless you get the next Ricky Henderson. If he returns to the .300 doubles machine we saw in 2010, he’s the perfect #2 hitter for this team. The power we need should actually be found in RF in the form of Jason Heyward. A return to his rookie form is vital to the playoff hopes of the Braves in 2012.

I heard a great interview with Jim Powell yesterday who asserted this: yes, Prado is being dangled, but so is “Brian McCann, Jason Heyward, and everyone else on the roster” if it would improve the team. In other words, there are no untouchables, but there is a price to pay.

I think Prado’s name has some up because he was of interest to Kansas City, and now to Colorado. Frank is listening, but not pushing. That’s only good business.

In my opinion, the Braves will trade a pitcher, but not Martin unless the offer is just one that Frank cannot refuse. If that’s the case, then good for us.

As for SS, I will defer again to the interview I heard with Jim Powell yesterday. He offered an opinion I haven’t heard given thus far…

According to Powell, the Braves are likely to acquire a SS at the end of a contract via trade rather than sign a FA to a 1 year deal. His logic? Any SS worth signing as a starter would probably get at least 2 years somewhere else, including Gonzo. Any 1 year contract guys are only backup types. He also asserts that Pastornicky may well be ready by mid-season and that he would not be surprised to see it.

It makes alot of sense to me.

But to add my own spin, maybe you go ahead and sign a starting SS to a 2 year deal, and flip him at the trade deadline if Pastornicky is ready. It’s good to have flexibility at the trade deadline.

    Here’s what I would do if I were Frank…

I would sign Edgar Renteria back as a bridge/mentor to PastaBoy. Can you think of a better mentor? Maybe Craig Counsell. Sign Renteria as the starter, then sign Craig Counsell to back up everywhere in the IF. Let Pasta start the year at AAA to get his work in. If he’s ready near the deadline, you can trade Renteria. Shortstops are always in demand at the deadline. Counsell remains as backup/mentor. Neither of those guys cost a draft pick, and you gain a sandwich pick by letting Gonzo sign elsewhere.

I would consider bringing Jack Wilson back, except that he has never appeared in the playoffs in his entire career. We all thought that would be changed this year, but it wasn’t. I blame Wilson. Snakebit. 😀

I still can’t quite figure out why some folks got their feelings hurt and took off. And for the life of me, I can’t figure out why other folks would type or write the things that were put forth. It amazes me.

It looked like one guy made a mistake, another guy called him out on it, then continued to pound on it like a tough steak, and through the collateral damage about 4 people ended up ticked off and gone.

Heck, I hope I get a break on the mistakes I make… and I make a ton of them! 😯

    Jayson Stark:

If this labor deal ever gets done, the schedule is about to undergo a dramatic change. We’ll be heading for 15 teams in each league, five teams in each of the six divisions and an interleague game every day. But the biggest change could be nearly TWICE as many interleague games, because every team in a division would play exactly the same schedule. Here’s the new format we’ve heard is on the drawing board:

Eighteen games against each of the other four teams in your division; six games against each of the other 10 teams in your league; three interleague games against each of the five teams in the corresponding division in the other league (i.e., AL East versus NL East); three more interleague games against each team in one of the other two divisions (i.e., AL East versus NL Central one year, NL West the next).

three interleague games against two divisions in the other league
Add that up and you get 72 intra-division games, 60 more intra-league games and 30 interleague games a year — up from the current 15 to 18 interleague games a year. The other net result of that change: Only three “rivalry” games (Mets-Yankees, Cubs-White Sox, etc.) every season instead of six.

    I hate interleague… 😡

    Last Stark tidbit:

Teams that have spoken with the Braves report they’re continuing to “float” Jair Jurrjens’ name, even after their potential deal to send him to Kansas City fell through. “They’re not really pushing him. They’re floating him,” said an executive of one team that spoke with them. “The impression we got is they’ve got to unload money. They want to get a bat, and the only way to do it is to unload money. The one guy they’d move, no problem, is Martin Prado. He seems like he’s fallen from grace over there.”

I disagree. Jim Powell, whom I would believe to be much more in tune with the vibe of the team, said pretty much the exact opposite. If pushed to choose, I’d side with Powell.

    New this morning from MLBTR:

Jamey Carroll is nearing a multiyear deal with an unknown team, according to ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick (all Twitter links). The Tigers, Rockies, Dodgers and Indians have been mentioned as potential suitors for Carroll, a Millenium Sports Management client who is expected to sign within a few days. The Phillies and Braves have also expressed interest.

The 37-year-old infielder played shortstop and second base for the Dodgers in 2011, posting a .290/.359/.347 line in 510 plate appearances. He hasn’t posted an on-base percentage below .355 in any of the past four seasons and he has a career mark of .356 after a decade in the Major Leagues. Carroll, who also has experience at third base and in the outfield, stole ten bases without getting caught this past season. He is not a ranked free agent and won’t cost his new team a draft pick.

Has Frank checked in on Carroll? If not, why not? He plays SS and 3B? Has a career OBP of .356? Bats RH? 10 steals?

Would make a great #2 hitter behind Bourn, methinks.

Why would it not make sense for the Braves to sign him to a multi-year deal? Even if Pasta takes over as starter in 2012, you have to have a backup… and he plays 3B. We all know the value of a backup at 3B. We were without both Chipper and Martin at times last year.

I seriously doubt it’s Los Bravos or else we would probably have some hint that something is stirring, but Carroll seems to me to be a good fit here.

Oh, well… alas, it is not to be. 🙄

On another note, looks like I won’t be able to attend spring training next season. I have been scheduled to have back surgery on December 13th. The doc is doing a spinal fusion of T-11 and T-12, He said it may or may not relive some of my pain but if he doesn’t do it, I will likely lose control of my bowels and won’t be able to walk either… Bummer!!!!! but I am not really that much into diapers… and not walking does not appeal to me either.

About a 10 day stay in the hospital and then will see if I come home or go to a rehab facility…. That said, I am not sure if and when I will have access to the internet but will figure out a way to stay connected. Meanwhile, I am doing my Christmas shopping (spending) early.

I am hoping I will heal well enough to ride to the camp grounds this summer but I doubt I will be able to use the boat so I just may have to put bait on my hook this year when I go fishing… I think I will be restricted from driving a car for 2-3 months.

I sure hate to hear that, Gil, but I think the surgery is definitely preferable to sitting around in soiled boxers.

Speaking of soiled boxers, the Phils sure did pony up a lot of cabbage for a 31 year old closer who did not exactly have the best season of his career in 2011. Whatever. It must be nice to have deep pockets. I’ll never know. But the Phils are getting old. Their grip on the NL East is loosening.

Now, the Marlins… offers to both Pujols and Reyes? Loria must be some more optimistic about his new park. I’ll bet that place fills up for at least 2 months. Then it’ll be back to half empty and the Marlins will have another fire sale. Pujols will never go there. Reyes just might. Between his fragile physique and Hanley’s fragile psyche, they might just have one great player.

    Denver Post:

The Rockies continue to cast a wide net as they attempt to ramp up their offense, expressing interest in free-agent outfielder Grady Sizemore.
Sizemore, who has spent his entire career with the Indians, is one of the most intriguing names on the market, a high- risk, high-reward player because of his injury history. Looking to improve their lineup, the Rockies recently initiated trade talks with Atlanta regarding second baseman Martin Prado.

Colorado isn’t expected to move forward aggressively on Sizemore until exhausting its options on Prado. Atlanta is seeking outfield help, and has interest in the Rockies’ Seth Smith. Moving him could create a spot for the left-handed hitting Sizemore.

Jamey Carroll signing with Minnie actually helps the Braves here as Carroll was the Rockies’ #1 FA target to fill their 2B void. Now that he is no longer an option, you gotta think they might ramp up their efforts to acquire Martin.

I’m still on the fence here. I think Martin is valuable to the Braves, but if Frank could squeeze out Smith plus CF prospect Charlie Blackmon? Then I’m a go. Blackmon is a bona fide OF prospect that could fill fill LF/CF for many years to come.

    We’ll see, I suppose.

Word from the GM meetings in Milwaukee, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post:

The Rockies arrive here looking for a starting pitcher, second baseman and another bat. Atlanta’s Martin Prado is a primary infield target, given his ability to play second and third base. Can a trade be worked out? The Rockies would likely sign off on Seth Smith and a lower-level prospect for Prado. But they aren’t going to move Smith and a center fielder like Tim Wheeler or Charlie Blackmon.

Then it won’t happen. If you ask me, Denver is posturing here. If they want Prado, they’ll have to give up one of those 2, and they know it. If they think Frank will blink, they haven’t followed his track record very well. They must be of the opinion that Frank is trying to dump the $4-5MM that Prado is likely to make this season. We know it’s not about salary, It’s about a talent without a position. In other words, the Braves are dealing from an area of strength. No, it’s the Rockies who will in all likelihood blink here. That is, if Martin is still around.

Here’s the thing, though. 2B is an area of dearth around the majors. And with Carroll gone to Minnie, and with Ellis off to La-La Land, the 2B market is severely thinned. Just ask Detroit, who has Delmon Young as a starting point in trade talks. And they are on record as offering Young up for Martin. Young alone won’t do it, though. No, by the time these GM meetings are done and the Winter Meetings crank up in 3 weeks, the 2B market will be well defined. And it’ll take a Young + prospect, or a Smith + Blackmon type deal to get it done.

Right now it’s just posturing… and a staring contest.

Trading Prado, who can play second, third and left, would sacrifice the Braves’ insurance plan for aging veteran Chipper Jones, who is a major health risk at third base.”

Once upon a time, it was a regular thing for the big club to play their AAA club at the end of spring training. Can’t blame the folks for not attending the pre-season games at the Ted, big league prices, minor league players….

Trades are always a crap shoot. Can’t just be about money… Got to be about really getting something for your troubles. The way I see it, If the Braves are in it next season, they will still need pitching, if not, Jurjins would bring a plethora of talent back at the trading deadline.

Who knows anymore? Glad I don’t have to make all those decisions. Maybe the Braves could just trade Tom Glavin for a GM to be named later….

My thoughts however are that if I had to choose between JJ and Tommy on which one to keep. I’d stay with Jair and let Tommy go. Tommy is always just one pitch away from a torn labium. So, the thought occurs to me…

If the Astros are to move to the AL in 2013 as is reported, with the result being more interleague play as is reported, that will mean more roadtrips to AL parks. That’ll mean more use of the DH in the NL.

    2 things:

    1) The Braves will have to take that need into consideration as they shape the team for this year and beyond.

    2) Is this MLB’s way of “easing” the DH on the NL faithful? I can hear the argument now, “What’s the big deal? You are already using it in 20% of your games. Might as well just use it all the time.” Bleh. Marxist logic. Bad is bad no matter how numb you make us to it. Just ask Congress.

I still like the strategy of having the pitcher hit(bat). The DH was invented so old fat guys like me could keep drawing a paycheck (Union) while making the game more exciting (scoring) to the occasional fan (idiots) (ROBERT) and allow the concessions (profit centers) to remain open longer because the games run longer (boring)

Personally, I love pitching duels. Snapping 2 hour games where we can get on with our lives rather than those 14 – 11 (softball) games that last 5 hours. Unless you are tailgating, it is just too much time to devote to baseball all at one sitting.

If the Astros move to the AL, they are going to have to completely reconfigure their roster. Different type of game, need different type of players. Or as the say in the AL.. defense? we don’t need no stinking defense…. just hit baby….

I say if the game is tied at the end of 9 (or 7 as it may be), then each team puts their enforcer on the field to fight for the win. No gloves, just bare knuckles. Place a ball in CF. One rep from each team takes the field and has to bring the ball back to his own dugout. No rules. Just retrieve the ball. I’d pay to see that.

One thing I don’t quite get, though.

Why Houston? Why not move Milwaukee back to the AL from whence they came? Losing Houston to the junior circuit means that the NL has no Texas representative. How is that good? That’s an awful big market. And Milwaukee and Chicago are close enough geographically that the NL could have easily lost Millie and no one would have blinked.

I suppose geographically, it’s easier for Houston. Less travel expenses to Arlington, etc.

I would have kept Houston in the NL, but in the West and moved San Diego to the AL. I mean, do we really need 3 Cali teams in the NL West? Of course not. And who’s gonna miss the Pads anyway? I can’t even name one off the top of my head! Uh… nope. At a complete loss. Wait! No, he’s a Diamondback. Nope, can’t do it.

Umm, wait..what??? Made up story??? He might not be bad in the outfield, but yankee fans hate his defense….

Braves Interested In Trading For Eduardo Nunez
By Mike Axisa [November 19 at 10:40pm CST]

The Braves are looking to add offense this winter, and John Harper of The New York Daily News reports that they let the Yankees know they’d be interested in trading for shortstop Eduardo Nunez last week.

“They need offense,” said Harper’s source. “They need a shortstop because they don’t want to bring [Alex] Gonzalez back, and they like Nunez a lot. They know the jury is out on him defensively, but they think his offense is strong enough that he could move to the outfield if he can’t be their long-term answer at short.”

Atlanta did not discuss Jair Jurrjens or any specific players on their side with the Yankees, and they also showed interest in Nunez last winter. The 24-year-old infielder hit .265/.313/.385 with five homers in 338 plate appearances this past year, stealing 22 bases in 28 tries as well.

Nunez played short and third base primarily last season, getting regular at-bats when Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez hit the disabled list at different times of the summer. He also saw time at second base and occasionally filled in at the corner outfield spots. Nunez committed 20 errors in his limited time, most coming on throws, so his ability to play the left side of the infield on an everyday basis is still in question.

Ok, looked up Nick 30 Y.O. I thought he was older honestly. But, he has a .254 career B.A. . Hit .232 batting right handed. .252 with runners on. .116 with runners in Scoring Position, 2 out. Don’t we have 6-7 hitters that already do that??? 😕 He does walk a ton though….

Here’s what we know: The Braves are only interested in offering or trading for a 1 year commitment. The Braves are not interested in paying more than $3MM that Gonzo probably would have commanded in arb.

Pre-season. Pre-season prediction… I think the Phillies are just too tough for other teams in the East for the Braves to overtake them in the upcoming season. That said, everyone is going to be better. I don’t think it is going to be a run-a–way by any means.

The Braves’ one true problem is offense. Getting the big hit…. I don’t see a rookie shortstop filling that role. The other thing is allowing McCann to rest between catching starts. I still think he is athletic enough to play left field but perhaps playing more AL teams will allow for him to DH.

In every season we have seen Brian wilt in September. Don’t be surprised if Bethencourt (sp) isn’t groomed to replace McCann when he gets really expensive. Unless the Braves are sold to a group willing to spend more money, I see the Braves lagging behind the rest of the league.

The winter meetings are now less than a week away. I fully expect Frank to come away with a SS. Whether that be through trade or FA signing is to be determined. But I’ll say this much. I’ll guess that Huddy having this procedure will temper Frank’s enthusiasm to entertain offers for JJ. That said, I don’t think that SS and JJ were linked to begin with. But it does sort of compartmentalize things a little more clearly.

I still think I’d try to bring Jack Wilson back, but he will also likely receive a 2 year deal somewhere. Why not give him 2 years? Why not sign him as your current starter and set up competition for 2013? Competition breeds excellence. (I know that’s a lost concept.) But if he beats out Pastornicky in 2013, then so be it. If not, he’s a veteran IF backup. I don’t see anything bad about that.

    I agree Raisins.

On the AGon thing…. So. the Braves were afraid they would have to pay around $3 mil for him to stay another year. That is as opposed to what amount they will have to pay for someone else? $2 mil? Sometimes you can try a little too hard to find a bargain.

Maybe the NBA has the right approach, split the gate and require teams to pay close to the cap. Sure let’s it come down to talent on the field and the ability of the managers to make the right decisions.

I am not anti corporation, not for ‘spreading the wealth around’ to the slackers but I am also anti greed. I was always taught to share what I have with those who were less fortunate.

Baseball should be a little bit like that. I admire Chipper Jones for being willing to play for less than market value. That said, I am realistic enough to know his best days are behind him. While Bethancourt still a few years away, don’t be surprised when McCann is traded to an AL club, where he can DH to keep his bat in the line-up but not get worn out before the end of the season. I love BMac but he just dose not have the stamina to go a mile and a quarter. After six seasons, the stats don’t lie….

You know, you don’t always have to add bluetooth, satellite radio and the leather package to your work truck, you do, however, have to have enough horsepower under the hood to tow your tractor to the next job. All that extra chrome looks pretty but do you really think it’s smart to take a $45 thousand dollar truck off road to go 4 wheeling?

Baseball is like that too, to me. the HP is your pitching and offense.

  197. 208 Voice of Raisins November 29, 2011 at 12:31 pm

With the addition of more inter-league games, even NL teams will have need for a DH type guy at times. It’ll help players like Mac as the years wear on. No doubt that Chipper will be the DH in AL cities this year, but 2013 forward? That’ll be BMac’s gig at that point.

I’m not so sure that Gonzo was turned away solely on the basis of a potential $3MM payday. I believe that Frank (and Fredi) was growing weary of Gonzo’s lack of offensive consistency. IMO, he’ll either come away from the Winter Meetings with an upgrade, or just go with the rook. Don’t forget, alot of needs are met during Spring Training, also. That’s when some of the best deals can be made as teams try desperately to fill holes… like holes in the rotation. By the 4th week of ST, Frank will know what Pastor is capable of, other teams will begin to recognize lack of pitching depth, and JJ, Hanson and Huddy will all have time to demonstrate their respective levels of health.

My best crystal ball guess? I think Frank does make a move for a SS next week. And I’ll bet it’s something none of us has on our radar. I’ll bet Prado is moved, and I’ll bet a young OF comes on board. I’ll bet Frank hangs on to his elite pitchers… again. Those are his trump cards and he’ll hang on to them until at least Spring. Now, that said, a JJ Hoover or someone similar could certainly be moved.

One more thing. We keep hearing how the Braves are comfortable with Pastornicky, but there’s a young man only a step behind – likely at AA in 2012 – named Andrelton Simmons who is the real SS of the future. Wouldn’t it be something if Frank included Pastornicky in a deal for a SS under contract for 2 more years? It wouldn’t be the first time a Braves GM pumped the buzz on a prospect only to include him in a trade.

    Just a thought. Yaneverknow…

So, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies really, really like Prado. He says they are still not wanting to let go of one of their young CF… but if I read between the lines correctly, he almost hints that they might if they absolutely have to, which is of course what they’ll have to do.

My opinion? It’s all posturing. They want what we have; we want what they have. It’s all a matter now of posturing for the additional parts. They’ll give up Seth Smith and one of the CF’s (Dexter Fowler, Charlie Blackmon or Tim Wheeler), and will no doubt want Prado and a pitcher. I’m sure they want one of the good’uns, so they’re hoarding their CF’s like Frank hoards his young guns. The issue is that as good as their CF prospects are, they do not have the same trade value as our top young hurlers. Don’t be surprised to see a Todd Redmond or JJ Hoover included, though. Redmond would probably compete for a rotation spot in alot of camps this spring. In ATL… well, let’s just say the path is a little more, uh, rocky. 😀

He would start for a lot of teams, and being a 6th/7th inning guy for the braves, while great for us, should in theory be fairly easy to replace, and again not a super valuable commodity. Kris Medlin, potential 3rd or 4th starter on the other hand…enough to get a CF from Rockies? Or are they going to ask for still another arm???

Yes, Ber, Medlen could certainly be included in a potential trade. I could see it happening.

When my wife goes to yard sales or flea markets, she looks at the price on something she’s interested in, then makes a ridiculously lowball offer to the seller. The seller counters. They eventually settle on something both like – the seller is happy receiving an acceptable price; my wife is happy getting a deal – or they can’t agree on a price and she moves on about her browsing.

Here’s the thing… The Rockies offered Seth Smith for Prado straight up. Ticket price – never happens. The Braves did ask that Arenado be included. Lowball offer – almost never happens. Both GM’s knew those proposals were off target, but they have now set the boundaries. Frank wants one of COL’s young CF’s. They have an abundance. COL wants Prado and a pitcher. We have an abundance. Before it’s all said and done, they’ll either talk about Prado and a pitcher for Smith and Fowler/Blackmon/Wheeler, or Frank’ll move on about his browsing.

One thing to note, though, If Mrs. Raisins sets out in search of a specific item, she’ll come home with it from somewhere.

    Just sayin’…

The Bosox seem to be looking everywhere for starting pitching. Seems to me that they and the Braves might find common ground on Jed Lowrie. Since the Sox picked up Marco Scutaro’s $6MM option, it’s obvious he’s their guy at SS. Lowrie can play both SS and 3B, makes only $450K this season, and doesn’t hit FA until 2015. And he bats RH. Boston also has Mike Aviles, who does essentially the same thing as Lowrie, making Lowrie somewhat expendable.

To me, that’s the kind of guy Frank is shaking the bushes for otherwise he’d have simply offered Gonzo arb and tried to negotiate a deal. Nobody worth picking up on the FA market is gonna get any less than the $3MM Gonzo is likely to get. And there’s that whole 1 year vs. 2 year thing. But by declining to offer arb, it only proved that Frank would not risk Gonzo accepting. So at minimum, Frank was not willing to go $3MM over 1 year .

IMO, they’d trade Lowrie in the right deal. I think it makes sense for the Braves in that he could be a cheap bridge to Pastor, or to simply back up both SS and 3B. Remember, we not only have to come up with 1 SS this winter, we have to come up with 2.

Braves save $5MM trading Lowe, $3MM not offering Gonzo, and potentially $6MM+ if Prado is traded. That equates to $14MM or so to fill both starting and backup SS plus LF. I figure the money they “get back” by not having to pay a Japanese pitcher to languish in Mississippi will cover most if not all of the raises due everyone else.

For $14MM, they can fill those slots… especially if they could pry away Lowrie and his piddly $450K. And if JJ is part of that deal, and he probably would have to be, there’s an additional $6MM to spend.

I think that’s the exact angle Frank is going.

And that appears to be the Braves problem, I’m not saying they need to flash money around like the Red Sox or Yankees but I do hate it when you feel they are forced to grow their own vegetables all the time rather than just being able to pick up what they need at the market.

Now, it would not be so bad if everyone was dealing from the same position but major league baseball is not a level playing field.

Hmmm, you are right and I keep forgetting about saving on KK…did DOB forget that when he wrote this a few weeks back???

The Braves are expected to have a payroll in the low-$90 million range in 2012, up perhaps a few million bucks from 2011. My calculations show they’ve got less than $10 mill to spend as of today, probably closer to $5 mill, taking into account raises for arb-eligibles Jurrjens, Prado, Michael Bourn and Eric O’Flaherty, as well as Brian McCann’s raise from $6.5 mill to $11.5 mill.

By the way, some of the projections I’ve seen reported for the Braves’ 2012 payroll have McCann’s salary at $8.5 million. That was the base salary for the final guaranteed season of his six-year contract, but McCann maxed out on all the escalators tied to Gold Gloves, Silver Sluggers and All-Star appearances, pushing the salary to $11.5 million. (There’s a $12 million club option for 2013 with a $500,000 buyout.)

Just a few more hours until the Winter Meetings start and the frenzy begins. My gut is telling me a couple of things:

    1. I think the Braves are going to give Pastor the chance to win the starting SS job, and will only shop for a veteran backup. I could see Jack Wilson being re-signed to that role, or even the return of Edgar Renteria – you know, the wily veteran backup/mentor/insurance policy in case the rook gets overwhelmed. Thing is, they won’t expect much offensively from him. He’ll simply be #8 (or 9) in Fredi’s batting order… which would serve nicely in front of the turnaround to Bourn since Pastor has above average speed and is a base-stealer himself. It makes sense on more than one level. The flip side is that it would leave the Braves with 3 every day players under the age of 23. That’s 3 out of 8… almost half. That’s a tall order.

    2. I think Prado is a goner. I think Frank is going all out too find a power bat for LF and Prado is the odd man out.

Just my gut talking. I guess it could just be gas.

    I’ll say this much…

If they pull this off, they will certainly make a big splash with 2 of the leagues most highly visible Latin players to open their new park in North Havana a/k/a Miami.

But they’ve committed $106MM for 6 years to an injury prone primadonna, an God only knows how much over how long to a guy who claims to be only 31 but can’t produce a birth certificate. (Who does he think he is… president or something?) They’ve already offered $198 over 9 years – really? $22+MM per season to a guy who’ll be at least 40 at the end… maybe 42? – which is past unreasonable. It’s unconscionable. Quite honestly, it’s irresponsible.

Anyway, it appears as though they are putting the full court press on Albert’s agent already this morning, and they’ll probably up the offer and get this done.

They’ll pound the ball for sure, and put alot of runs on the board. Their 1-5 in the batting order will be filthy. But they won’t be able to afford to fill out the rest, and they won’t be able to afford pitching. They’ll have to trade Gaby Sanchez, a young star, and probably Logan Morrison, another young up-and-comer, to make room for the new guys and to try to get some pitching. But other teams will know that the Fish have to trade Sanchez, and his value will not be at a premium. Morrison has shown only promise, and he likewise is not at peak value.

And what of Hanley? LF? CF? 3B? Plus, we all know Hanley is a great team guy and will just happily take one for the team and switch positions without complaint, right?

Miami has made headlines, but created headaches. Expensive ones, too. One has to wonder how many games Reyes will play a year now that he has finally hit the lottery. And what about Albert? Y’all, he’s older than 31, I don’t care what he claims. He’ll begin breaking down before he gets halfway through that monster deal.

But for the short term… Reyes, Ramirez, Pujols, Stanton, Buck. That’s a stout 1-5.

I wonder… will they really be able to generate a fanbase that’ll consistently show up in Miami? I mean after the first 2-3 months? What could be worse than spending like the Oval Office on a handful of players in expectation of something huge, only to continue to draw like they’ve done over their history?

And they won’t be able to trade those onerous contracts in a fire sale like they have done before in their sordid past.

    Like

… or they could trade Hanley. Could happen. It would eliminate one conflict, and likely net a decent pitcher. But his contract will limit his suitors. Yankees? They wouldn’t push Jeter out, would they? Would Jeter DH? And the Yankees are looking for pitching, not looking to trade any. Who else? Maybe the Angles. Maybe Milwaukee. Maybe Detroit. That’s about it.

Yep, if a Pujols deal gets done – and I’m betting it does – they will still have alot of work to do to make all the pieces fit together right. That said, it’s a good problem them to have, right? At least for right now it is…

Jays are seeking both a starting 2B and starting P, so obviously there is room for dialogue. But for whom?

Eric Thames is a youngster in LF. In 95 games, he popped 12 HR’s and batted .262. But he bats lefty. Not a perfect match by any stretch. Not for Prado or JJ, anyway.

Travis Snyder is also a youngster that can play all 3 OF spots, but not very impressive at the plate IMO. And he’s a lefty.

Rajai Davis? Highly doubtful. Isn’t the power guy the Braves are seeking, and really sucked last year. But he is a very good CF and bats RH. Still, it’s like saying that the car has a great interior and nice wheels, but the engine’s blown. No thanks.

The Braves’ duo of Jair Jurrjens and Martin Prado continue to be as sought after as any players on the slow-developing trade market. Sources say that 8-10 teams have shown real interest in Jurrjens, while “half the teams in baseball” have talked to the Braves about Prado, most with the idea of playing him at second base. The Braves continue to say that they don’t need to move either player, and will only do so if the return helps make them more competitive in 2012 (as opposed to dealing for long-term prospects). The Braves have assured teams that Jurrjens is fully healthy, and that his velocity returned to the mid 90s when he resumed throwing in instructional league.

On the Blue Jays and Prado… One thing I have learned over the years is that if a team wants a player badly enough, they can always find a way to make it happen. Who and what do the Jays have to offer and what other team matches up with them? Then look for that team to be involved in a 3 way… Of course, with all those moving parts, someone usually gets cold feet at the last second.

Yep, the Marlins are making a big push. Why not, they have been sand bagging for years… I look for Hanley to be shopped out rather than moved. Don’t see him being traded to the Braves though.

People seem to forget the Marlins have a pretty good pitching staff already, Just did not have a closer to go with it and a weak pen, that could change. They have some really good talent in the minors so they could be a beast.

Good thing for the Braves there will be an extra wild card spot this year.

Too bad the Braves don’t have the caljons to move Uggla to left and play Marteen at second. It would solve a multitude
    of issues.

Yep, Alonso played some LF and is a real possibility. On the neg side, he’s another lefty and not a real strong defensive OF. On the pos side, the guy has hit a ton in the minors.

If there is as much interest in both Prado and JJ as has been reported, Frank can make sure he’s not trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

As to flip-flopping Prado and Uggs, it doesn’t change anything offensively, and could only have a negative effect defensively. Uggs was actually pretty good at 2B last season, but would severely suck in LF. Plus, he finally appeared to get settled in about mid-season. Let’s just let him stay settled.

Plus, I think we’ve seen the best of Martin. That’s not bad at all, but still… I think we’ve reached his ceiling.

The prevailing thought is that his numbers are great for a 2B, but only average for a LF. The truth is, they’re only average for a 3B as well. Nobody seems to want to go there, though. I for one have never looked forward to having Martin step in as our 3B when Chipper saunters into sunset. At that point, we’d have our own Casey Blake or Blake DeWitt. You know, serviceable but not outstanding.

I say trade him now while there is great demand and get a real LF. 3B may take care of itself from inside the organization. (See JTerd and ESalcedo.)

Did not Freddi Freeman start out as a third baseman? Of course we (Braves fans) have certainly become spoiled by the spectacular defensive skills FF has learned in such a short while. Thing is, Chipper is still going to occupy 3rd for at least another year. Damn the bad knees, full speed ahead.

Can’t worry too much about the Marlins, I will leave that up to the rest of the league. I’m still thinking that if everyone would hit like they are capable for a full season, the Braves could pretty much stand pat. What we as Braves fans know, without chemical enhancement, they can’t… Just too hard on the body to play 162 plus games.

All that said, coming up with the big hit a tad more often would do wonders for the pen’s stamina. I mean really, does anyone really expect a reliever to make 80 appearances a season and still have anything left at the end?

10 years and $220+MM for a guy with tremendous physical talent, albeit on a “31” (that’s in Latino years) body that will break down halfway into the deal… that’s if they’re lucky. I’m guessing that St. Louis believes that MLB will force the DH down the NL’s throat before then.

Seriously, does any reasonable person believe that Albert is just 31? And giving him the benefit of the doubt, do you really want to give $22MM to a 41 year old part-time player living on the back of his baseball card?

I guess they’re just looking forward to that great leadership he brings. Oh, that’s right… I forgot that he’s pretty much a sullen clubhouse kind of guy. The Braves would like to have Prado and Smith split LF. Not a bad strategy really. We’ve said a thousand times that Martin is most valuable to the Braves as a supersub. JJ would easily bring back what we are seeking. And the Rockies freed up $$$ for their rotation by trading Huston Street earlier. Just about enough to pay JJ.

    Ber, thanks for the link…

Raisins, Albert has been in considerable disfavor with the OWS crowd since he appeared on stage with Glenn Beck at the DC rally.

Still, Albert is a great player and would be a great addition to any club for the 3 or four years they get out of him. The other 6 or 7, not so much…

Best thing that ever happened to Texas was Alex opting out of a contract which took Texas of the hook for big money and gave them some signing room. Second best thing, cleaning out the Braves in a deal for Texiera.

Want to know why Frank Wren stockpiles pitchers? Look at the results of that trade. Texiera proved you cannot hope to out slug every team to get to the top. Braves output improved to better than a run per game with Tex in the line up. Unfortunately, the pen let in runs like rain through a FEMA tarp…

And still a whole lot of nuthin’ for the Braves. I understand patience. I don’t have any, but I understand it. Buehrle is signed, and Wilson is not. Once Wilson signs, the JJ market will heat up. I get it. I just had a few expectations of my own entering these meetings.

But we have learned something… that is if you believe everything that Frank says. Franks says that Pastornicky is the starting SS going into Spring. Frank says they are not actively pursuing trades; rather, others are pursuing our guys. Frank says we really have no other needs other than backup SS/IF. Frank says alot. Frank is paid to say things like that. Frank is posturing.

I do not for a second believe that the Braves will go to Spring with Pastornicky as the starter at SS. That’s no knock on him, but he’s just a kid with relatively little experience in the high minors. And do you want to know the last time there was a playoff team with 3 everyday players under the age of 23? You have to go all the way back to the Big Red Machine. So, is that relevant in 2012. I think until that streak is broken, it’s relevant in any year. And since we already have 2 in the lineup with JHey and Freddie, I’d say it’s a good bet we’ll enter 2012 with a veteran SS. Maybe Nick Punto.

Another thing about Pastornicky. The Braves like him, as they should. But they LOVE Andrelton Simmons. LOVE him. Most in MLB do. He does everything well except hit HR’s. Great bat, great eye, great runner, better than great glove, better than great arm. Rafael Furcal all over again. They LOVE him. He’s slated to start 2012 at AA. I still wouldn’t be surprised to see Pastornicky included in a deal for a veteran with a couple of years left on a team friendly contract. Bridge to Pastornicky? I think bridge to Simmons is a possibility. Then, when they bring Simmons up in 2014, JHey and Freddie aren’t kids anymore.

Then again, there is the Clint Barmes/Troy Tulowitzki precedent. Barmes came up with the Rockies and looked to be a nice young SS with solid fundamentals. He had a pretty good rookie season and followed it with a pretty good sophomore season. He got hurt early in year 3, Tulo came in, and Barmes became a forgotten man in COL. Now he’s a journeyman. I see a whole lot of Pastornicky/Simmons right there.

One more thing… I think you can also look at how many players at a time will go through their arb years together. You have to spread them out, or you’ll either have a massive salary bump all at once, or a mass exodus all at once.

All that said, I haven’t had my first cup of coffee yet and my brain is still in a little bit of a fog. This whole rant may just be a big pile.

… and as we head into the last day of the meetings, all of the FOT’s will assemble for the Rule 5 draft which effectively ends the gathering. The Braves will leave empty handed. Very anti-climactic. I have followed very closely and feel a little let down. I may need to take a little mental break. The ol’ B&S might get kinda scarce over the next couple of weeks.

Gotta say, I’m disappointed. Patience is one thing, but I am afraid they may have turned off alot of fans that are still stinging from the epic collapse. I consider myself to be somewhat reasonable, but am still shaking my head a little. They’re gonna have a really hard time selling this team to a ticket base this offseason, which will only erode their payroll flexibility. It’s a fine line… just feels like they may have wobbled a little.

Make no mistake… alot of the offseason is SELLING your team. Do you think the ill-clad Marlins are solely focused on the World Series with their huge splashes? Heck no! They’re selling this team to their new fan base while trying to keep the old. The Braves’ fan base isn’t buying the “standing pat” routine. They better do something or we’ll be the ones with the echos in the stands.

    Brewers To Sign Alex Gonzalez
By Tim Dierkes [December 8, 2011 at 2:55pm CST]

The Brewers will sign shortstop Alex Gonzalez, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. It’s a one-year deal with a vesting option for 2013, Rosenthal adds. Gonzalez will presumably take over as Milwaukee’s starting shortstop, a position occupied by Yuniesky Betancourt this year. Gonzalez is represented by Eric Goldschmidt.

Gonzalez, 34, hit .241/.270/.372 with 15 home runs in 593 plate appearances for the Braves in 2011. UZR suggests Gonzalez was average defensively this year and above-average from 2006-10. Gonzalez seems to represent an upgrade over Betancourt, but not by much.

By the way, on the Braves landing Fish in the rule five draft, the organization has had pretty good luck with culling pitches from other teams string. I realize O’Flarerty wasn’t a rule five guy but the Bravos did pick him up off the Mariner’s scrap heap. He certainly cannot be worse than guys like Scott Proctor.

While 50 grand is a nice chunk of coin to me, it is likely the take for the hotdog concession for one night at the Ted. Even if the Bravos have to throw him back in the pond, they are only out of $25K. A lot less than they threw away on Kershin.

I think a lot of folks have amnesia on how good Kris Medlin was/is… His name is hardly mentioned by folks when they speak of the Braves rotation but the kid can pitch. He may end up as the long relief guy next season but I see him making a very good impression in the spring. I think he is another reason JJ might be considered expendable by the Braves.

All that said, I still see the Braves’ success or failure hinged on Jason Heyward’s ability to perform up to a level of expectations. You just don’t want to be the ‘out” everyone looks to in the opposition’s line up. Maybe a new hitting coach can get through to him. While they are at it, the Braves might work on teaching Uggla that swinging hard at every pitch does not always translate into success. On that note, I hope he has already begun his work outs so he won’t struggle early. He really needs to be ready to go on opening day this season.

  268. 284 Voice of Raisins December 9, 2011 at 12:01 pm

I think alot of Uggla’s early struggles could be attributed to being the high $$$ signing and to the expectations of coming to a perennial playoff team with high expectations. It seemed as though he finally made the adjustment from “big money new guy” to “Braves everyday 2B” right before the ASB. Then he was back to his old self.

Fredi says Medlen is targeted for the pen, but wil be stretched out to do what is needed.

As to JHey, he is already in FLA working with the new guy(s). At least that’s what I read. And he’s healthy. No thumb issues; no shoulder issues. That’s a good sign.

Agreed that much of 2012 rides on his very wide shoulders.

Fish will take Sherrill’s role for alot less $$ and alot more potential.

Doing my morning scouring of my numerous reading sources, only one name seems to have escaped Frank’s highly secretive list of potential SS/backup IF, and that name is Nick Punto. I know almost nothing about Punto.

Of course, once Ryan Theriot is non-tendered, he’s likely to zoom to the top of that secret list. He’s alot like Walt Weiss… not blessed with the range or grace of Gonzo, but a hard-nosed gamer. BC’s kinda guy for sure. Maybe Fredi’s kind of guy too. He’s a high OBP guy who can steal a base here and there. And he doesn’t strike out alot. Maybe a good #2 candidate behind Bourn-eo. Or #8 (or 9) guy like Constanza, just without the jet-pack.

I think Gonzo’s .270 (atrocious) OBP was his undoing. I can remember way too many u-turns at the plate with RISP. Theriot sported a .321 OBP last season. 30 points higher in avg. last season, too. Alex’s 15 HR’s was the big offensive difference, but he only drove in 9 more runs (56-47). Go figure.

For all of LaRussa’s faults, he made sure guys played the game right, and I bet someone like the riot can get a sac fly when needed…I’d love to see SF stats on players around the league…braves have to have been at the bottom of the league…
I know Jorge is probably not at the top of the braves wants…plus he is a weird cat, in that(Hey that rhymes !) he can only play catcher/1st base/DH, and he can’t hit from the right side anymore, for some reason…but, he’s been on dozens of winners, can be a 3rd string catcher, and I also think you could call him off the bench to get a SF. I know, we need a replacement for Brooks more(IF they don’t bring him back) but we need to win close games most of all….

Now, however, you will have to be very careful you don’t get an infection since to have opened a pathway to the outside world…

Yes, the big day is tomorrow. My hope is to wake up in three months and feel absolutely great, no pain, no problems walking… That said, my short term goal is to be able to walk under my own power to the toilet, number two is to be able to do number two without assistance before, during or after….

Long term goal is to be able to play golf again. I do not have to play well, I do not let things like keeping score deter me from an enjoyable outing. Hey, something I picked up from watching my kids play youth soccer and T-ball. Just enjoy the game, who care about winning… ? A lot like spring training games, but different…

So, good news bad news for Milwaukee, Braun getting tested positive for PEDs but signed Alexis Ramries. Looks like they are lining up to replace Fielder’s RBIs at a cheaper price than Prince is asking.

Doesn’t seem like eons ago that the Braves made their deals prior to the Baseball meetings. Now we are likely waiting until spring training to do the deed. Too bad the Braves did not pick up Morse last year form the Cardinals before being signed by the Nats. Would have been the solution on so many levels for the Braves in 2011.

Oh well, I guess there is another journeyman outfielder the Braves can pick up on a minor league contract before April at league minimum. Just saying…

Also, scanning the NL list of non-tenders, who might interest the Braves?

Interesting that Conrad was non-tendered before reaching arb eligibility. That is a rarity. Mr. O’B speculates that it could have been done to remove him from the 40-man roster without having to pass him through waivers. This way, they can re-sign him with an invite to Spring Training, and open a 40-man roster spot in the process.

    Interesting indeed…

Hey, he’s a nice bat to come off the bench in late innings. He has certainly provided his share of highlites, and has proven to be clutch at times. But the dude has hands of stone, and unless you’re a boxer, that’s not a good trait.

Plus, we already have Hinske as our lefty off the bench, and Matt Diaz as our righty off the bench. Acquiring a real RH LF makes having a defensively challenged Conrad expendable. Just not enough roster spots since we still need a backup SS/IF. Nick Punto’s name is coming up more and more as the guy Frank wants. Fits the profile. We’ll see…

  288. 304 Voice of Raisins December 15, 2011 at 7:34 am

Luke Scott would be nice in LF, but the $5MM+ annually he’ll likely command will NOT fit nicely in the budget. That’s why he was non-tendered by the O’s. He’s a nice complimentary player (no D at all), but not a feature guy, and not worth the $$$, at least not to a mid-level team. To the Yanks, Bosox or Dodgers, it’s just a drop in the very large bucket.

I am concerned. I really am. I don’t mind a rookie at SS if there is an offensive upgrade somewhere else, but the longer this offseason goes, the more I feel we’ll see minimal change. I hope Frank proves me wrong. That, plus starting a rookie usually means you have a veteran backup plan. Frank has not only failed thus far to acquire that, the market is rapidly vanishing. I really thought Punto was the guy, but he was signed by Boston yesterday. This whole “1 year contract” thing has become a bit baffling to me. I could see it when the talk was as a “bridge” to Pastornicky. But now that Pastornicky is “the guy”, don’t you want a backup for more than just 1 year? Do you really want to be doing this again next year, with next year’s elevated salary demands? I don’t. It doesn’t make sense anymore.

It’s all turned a little murky to me. I cannot figure out the roadmap anymore. My hope is that Frank has a good plan, and is just keeping typically tight lipped about it. Otherwise… well, maybe he’ll stop and ask directions from somebody.

Perhaps Frank is thinking the team can get really lucky like the Yankees did last year and have every single gamble pay off…just doesn’t seem like the braves kind of luck to me….

That, or he’s thinking lets see how everyone performs out of the gate…say JJ has a 1.80 ERA for April, Prado is hitting .290 in left, then he can get more for them, just seems a bit greedy(Not that there is anything wrong with that!` 😉 ) when you have so many potential starters…but we know the team is cheap…err, trying to be sensible with expenditures right now….don’t know what happens to the clock of some of the young starters who have already had a cup of coffee, if it would really help the team to have them spend 3-4 more months getting “seasoning”….

    Braves Interested In Ronny Cedeno
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 15 at 9:19am CST]

The Braves are among the teams interested in free agent shortstop Ronny Cedeno, according to David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (on Twitter). The Peter E. Greenberg & Associates client has been on Atlanta’s backup shortstop and utility list all offseason, O’Brien reports.

The Pirates declined Cedeno’s option earlier this offseason, after he posted a .249/.297/.339 line in 454 plate appearances. The 28-year-old posted a strong 6.8 UZR/150 at shortstop this past season, though his career mark of -1.6 UZR/150 is slightly below average. The Red Sox and Pirates were also linked to Cedeno earlier this offseason, but they’ve since added depth in Nick Punto and Clint Barmes, respectively.

This guy has a pretty simple take on the Braves. Can’t say I disagree at all.

    http://thehotteststove.blogspot.com/2011/12/if-i-were-general-manager-series-nl.html

In a nutshell, he says 1. trade nobody, 2. sign a backup SS, 3. sign a FA LF masher ala Luke Scott or Ryan Ludwick, and play the 2012 season. Prado gets plenty of playing time splitting LF duties and spelling 3B and 2B. Keep all the pitchers since JJ and Tommy are health risks.

Honestly, it’s very simplistic, but also pretty pragmatic. And it’s very realistic.

I don’t know…it is possible the Braves will have starters injured early, and we will be glad to have all the arms….hopefully the Nats don’t go after Prince…otherwise we could possibly be looking up at the Nats, Marlins and Phils for much of the year…

Ber, I don’t know that the Braves will be looking up at the Marlins. Does Reyes do that much for them? Did he elevate the Mets to anything… that is when he wasn’t injured? Not in my estimation. And they have now alienated their biggest star Hanley Ramirez. They’ll be good… yes. But I truly do not believe they have passed the Braves. Pitching is still the great equalizer, and the Braves have the edge there. Of course, I’d love to be looking at big Mike Stanton every night, but that’s OK.

The Braves still have needs. But there is still a couple of months left. Alot rides on the very wide shoulders of one Jason Heyward. I’d like to think we could find another set of wide shoulders to place in the other corner…

  297. 313 berigan2electricboogaloo December 17, 2011 at 1:05 pm

Well, I think the mets are going to be a pinata w/o him there. He made sure the guys batting behind him got a lot more fastballs, distracted the pitchers, etc, etc..I’m sure he will be a thorn in the side of the braves (when he is able to play)
Don’t forget, they have a better closer in Heath Bell, and LEFT HANDED starter Mark Buehrle will be hated by braves fans for years….Hanley Ramirez has a .306 career BA and hit .243 last year. He really should shut up and play. If he returns to form, and Josh Johnson is the same pitcher as before the injury, they should be a force.
I may sound negative about the braves(Cuz it’s so easy as a fan to bash your home team! 😉 ) and I don’t expect them to beat the Phils(unless the phils suffer starting pitching injuries ) they hopefully will compete at least for the WC and whatever that other playoff position will be called…
But yeah, a lot rides on JHey’s shoulders…

Hanley was already a malcontent before Reyes arrived and took his position. No way that’ll work. I’ll set the over/under on games played by Reyes at 100. In fact, I’ll bet Chipper plays in more than Reyes. Not impressed by Buehrle. Bell? Eh. He’s no Kimbrell. The Marlins have more “if’s” than the Braves. They took risks for sure, but no way they all pan out. The Reyes/Hanley issue will be a cancer there.

That said, the Braves still have some work to do. If we stand exactly as we are now, we won’t compete with the Phils… the aging Phils… the getting creeky Phils… the Howard-less for a while Phils…

Buehrle’s stuff isn’t impressive, but he is, IMO. 200+ innings every year since 2001, 3.83 ERA in the DH league…and did I mention, LEFT HANDED??? 😉 He will chew up and spit out the braves every time. If that 50 year old for the Nats can do it, he sure will…but, that will only happen what, 4-5 games a year??? HRam will be interesting…Red Sox showed some interest…they hate that they had to give him up to get Josh Beckett. They can try to buy low too, but they will have to give up a lot. Don’t know if they have that much left…anyway…new stadium, actual fans in the seats, bad season, he might still want to show he’s the best player there…or not. enough on him…

Man, is it just me, or did the Reds give up way too much??? Yonder Alonso(of course a lefty) would have looked great in left(or at least at the plate) Yasmani Grandal would allow the Braves to either move Brian to left/1st/Full time DH league(no I don’t want to trade him!) in 2 years. and Edinson Vólquez…well, he fits in much better in SD, it’s true…but could have traded him off with Prado…I don’t know…just an awfully quiet off season so far….

Reds way overpaid no doubt. We’ll just have to agree to disagree on the Marlins. They have to show me. Then I might believe. It’s bad enough to have 2 “stars” that play the same position, but 2 Prima Donnas? Glad it’s them and not us. Bad chemistry. Bad news.

Now, baseball….V, a bit of thinking outside the box here…just read that Diamondbacks signed Jason Kubel so their gold glove winning left fielder, Geradro Parra is now a 4th outfielder…I didn’t think he had much of a bat, but he sounds like a perfect 2 hole hitter. 8 Hr’s 46 RBIs, 15 steals(caught only once) .292 BA, .357 OBP. Oh, he’s only 24 to boot…though, is he really better than Prado??? Well, defensively and age wise yes…Seth Smith only hit 15 HR’s playing in that launching pad…both Parra and Smith are lefties…of course….

I also see that Yu Darvish derby was won by the Rangers…I’m sure you had also read that the Blue Jays had supposedly put in a “monster” offer for him, and lost. They need a #2 starter badly. JJ of course fits that to a T . Now, who do they have that we could use???

  306. 322 Voice of Raisins December 20, 2011 at 3:08 pm

Parra is only a 4th OF at best… no bat. I’d rather have Prado. I see Smith as only a piece of what the Braves really want, which is one of their young CF prospects. If the Braves can pry one of those guys away, preferably Wheeler, then you can live with a Smith/Diaz platoon for 2012. And the way those 2 historically split, that might not be such a bad thing. But Seth Smith is in no way the center of what the Braves are trying to acquire. Honestly, I’d rather hang onto Prado and concentrate on trading JJ.

    Interesting…

MLB.com’s Mark Bowman gets a feel that the Braves were close to a deal with Cincy last weekend to send JJ to the Reds for a haul, but it was derailed at the last minute when the Reds did business with SD instead. According to Bowman, the Rockies felt that once the Braves/Reds deal was done, they’d get their deal done for Prado.

I understand the virtue of patience. I really do. But perception is a powerful thing, and the perception of many fans is that the team who collapsed in epic fashion and blew a 10 1/2 game WC lead is simply standing pat. I read it in so many of the publications that I scan.

Frank has work to do, not just to shore up his squad, but to win back a legion of bitter fans. Not an easy task, if you ask me…

And I gotta tell you, I am still a little perplexed at this stand of finding a cheap backup SS that can backup 3B as well on a 1 year deal. If you’ve set Pastornicky as your starter, as apparently Frank has, why the 1 year deal for backup? Do you want to replay this drama next offseason also? There MUST be reason to this rhyme, but it sure isn’t apparent.

    Just saw this…
Orioles Turned Down Braves’ Offer For Adam Jones
By Luke Adams [December 21 at 9:03am CST]

The Braves made a run at Orioles outfielder Adam Jones earlier this month, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun. Connolly reports that Atlanta offered Jair Jurrjens, Martin Prado, and a pitching prospect for Jones, but the O’s “didn’t bite,” indicating how much they value their center fielder.

It was reported earlier in the month that the Orioles and Braves talked about Jurrjens and Prado, though it hadn’t been confirmed that Jones was also discussed…
Can’t blame them, he’s a guy you build a team around, not trade away…

    Dan Connolly, Orioles Insider:

Adam Jones is the team’s [Orioles’] best trade chip. But unless the Orioles get a front-line pitcher in return, I don’t see them dealing Jones. The Atlanta Braves made a run this month, offering second baseman-outfielder Martin Prado, starter Jair Jurrjens and, eventually, a pitching prospect, and the Orioles didn’t bite. So that tells you just how much they value their center fielder. (Jurrjens looked like a front-line starter in the first half of 2011, but there have been some durability concerns surrounding the 25-year-old righty since his 215-inning season in 2009.)

That is a pretty stout offer. Personally, I’m glad that one didn’t fly…

According to my calculations, the only FA SS’s remaining unsigned are Edgar Renteria (too old) and Ronny Cedeno (yawn). The Braves have said they have “targeted” Cedeno, although I honestly cannot figure out why. And I suppose given that he’s the only real option left on the board, why isn’t it getting done?

Frank is up to something. He must be. Things just don’t add up at the moment.

    Bowman:

Braves did not offer Jurrjens and Prado to the Orioles

The Braves expressed interest in Adam Jones. But they did not offer Martin Prado and Jair Jurrjens to the Orioles in exchange for the outfielder.

A source with knowledge of the Orioles negotiations disputed a Baltimore Sun report that indicated the Braves were rejected when they offered Prado, Jurrjens and a pitching prospect for Jones.

The source said the Braves were told Jones was unavailable when they asked about him a couple weeks ago. The Orioles later called the Braves to see if they would trade Prado, Jurrjens and two other “premium guys” in exchange for Jones.

The Braves said they were not interested and the two clubs have not had any recent discussions about these players.

And that makes alot more sense…

    Braves, Orioles Discussed Jones, Pitchers
    By Ben Nicholson-Smith [December 22, 2011 at 9:32am CST]

The Braves and Orioles discussed a possible Adam Jones trade recently, but talks didn’t progress far, ESPN.com’s Jerry Crasnick reports (all Twitter links). The Orioles wanted Jair Jurrjens, Martin Prado and at least two of Brandon Beachy, Mike Minor, Julio Teheran, Arodys Vizcaino and Randall Delgado. The Braves weren’t interested at that price, Crasnick writes.

Conflicting reports about the Braves’ interest level in Jones emerged yesterday, but it appears some preliminary discussions occurred. Orioles GM Dan Duquette joined Jim Bowden and Casey Stern on MLB Network Radio this week and explained that the Orioles are trying to “build around” Jones. “When you have some good players, other teams are interested,” he said. “We’re not marketing Adam Jones.” However, he stopped short of guaranteeing that Jones would stay put.

IF Prado hits .307 like he did in both 2009 and 2010 (instead of .260 like last year) that will make the 2012 team better.

IF McCann goes back to hitting closer to his .286 BA career ba and the 90 RBI’s he averaged from 2005 to 2009, the team will be better.

IF Jhey hits .277 instead of .227, the team will be better…

More I think about it, I think Wren is probably hamstrung at this point…can’t say they can’t afford to take on anyone new without trading folks like Prado and JJ though I am sure teams know this, and didn’t offer as much as they would other teams…and we all know once the season starts, there just aren’t big trades made in April or May, since teams don’t know where they stand…and now with more teams making the playoffs, there will be less desire tahn every to trade a good player, right????

It was the worst hospital I have ever had to deal with and I am not sure if I may not contact some legal advice, it was a total 10 days of hell.
