115: And in a close play at the plate the Braves are…….

by Gil in Mechanicsville

Coming down the home stretch it looks like it’s going to be a close play at the plate for the Braves.

Kris Medlen

Last year at this time, we were all thinking, the Phillies are going to catch us but we should still make the playoffs, after all, no one has ever not made it with so much cushion.

Mike Minor

Then the doubt set in as two thirds of the starting rotation went down and Prado came up lame at the final turn. Alas, perhaps one of our greatest fears came into being. The only thing that saved the Bravos from being the number one choke story of the year is the Boston Red Sox managed to pull off the same feat.

So, the Braves are again looking squarely in the eyes of making the list of teams who will be

Ben Sheets

playing October baseball but perhaps this season, Atlanta will limp across the finish line ahead of the pack. Certainly, our pitching staff looks to be in better shape and the position players are not nearly as nicked up as last season.

All that said, it will take some good luck to go along with some good fortune and good defense for the 2012 edition of Los Bravos to go deep into the playoffs. Perhaps we should all remember the sage advice given to NASCAR drivers when they are reminded, “to finish first, first you must finish”. Being in a one game crap shoot just for the opportunity to meet a division champion is not the most

Paul Maholm

enviable position but it is certainly a more enviable place to be than perhaps Denver or Kansas City or the twenty two other major league teams who will be calling it quits after game 162 of the schedule. Heck, some of those teams called it quits on July 4th. Just ask the Marlins….

Anyway, adversity builds character and Lord knows the Braves have had a lot of character building done the past five or six seasons. At least the Braves have a solid pitching staff and a very deep and dependable bullpen to go with an offense which has shown it can get as hot as anyone for extended stretches.

I think we can pretty much rely on the likes of Venters, O’Flaherty, Durbin and Kimbrel to come out of the pen and make any game a 6 inning game. If only the Braves can keep Hudson, Sheets, Hanson and Maholm from giving the game away in the first six innings, I like our chances. Okay, maybe not enough to bet the family farm but I would be willing to put up someone else’s farm…..

Gil

Gil, once again, a very nice job! 🙂
Sorry I didn’t get one started…I sorta had a thought, then they started to tank, then I didn’t really have the time, then a dog ate my idea! 😕

Man, you know….the Giants lost their best hitter, and haven’t lost a step…amazing. How well would the braves play without JHey, or Bourn for an extended period?
And this makes 3 bad starts in a row for Sheets. Hopefully, this is like a pitcher in spring training going through the dead arm period.
Weird time for a blockbuster too! Normally, players get claimed then pulled back, but no one was willing to take on any of those contracts, even Adrian Gonzalez’s except for the Dodgers.

If I were Ben Sheets and I saw Eric Hinske playing left field behind me any more this season, I would have a shoulder inflammation too…. A guy like Sheets who has to pitch to contact has to have the very best defense behind him to have a chance.

Like Greg Maddux once told an umpire while being squeeze in a game him was pitching for the Padres, “I’m not that good any more. I need those calls off the plate”…

So, Minor needs a bit of run support and Hanson just needs to run… And I guess the 6 man rotation is done with too. Just as well, it wasn’t working out very well for the Braves anyway.

And thanks for the Kudos guys, and thanks to the “graphics department” folks too CL 🙂

Hey, I can’t explain it, I just go with the flow….

Good for Minor to get a bit of run support for a change.

Our beloved Braves made a very nice showing for the national audience last night. JHey and Free-dog going back2back yicketty late was icing on the cake. JHey is becoming the player we all thought he’d be. Having those 2 guys 3-4 in our order for a while is gonna be SWEET.

And Francisco has made as much improvement in 1 season as I think I have ever seen out of a player. He looks like he might could stick and play this game every day. Mamo shot to center off a 83 mph off-speed pitch. Monstrous power.

By the way, Jon Miller without Joe Morgan is better, but he’s still Jon Miller. Can’t stand the voice, or the air of superiority. And Hershiser? Well, he’s an improvement over Morgan. That’s about all I can say.

Raisins. that was not Jon Miller last night.

However, I do agree with your assessment of Jon, he is like finger nails across the chalk board for me.

Now baseball… Huddy was really sharp last night. Best I have seen him in a while. Maybe he just hates the hot humid weather in Georgia. Lord knows, I have been going through 3 tee shirts a day here and I am not really doing anything. 80-90 percent humidity will do that to you I guess. Anyway, good to see Paul Janish having them drop in for him. That two run triple was big last night.

I don’t know if y’all noticed last night but Juan-gone’s head stayed right on that ball he crushed to center. Great example of what happens when you don’t pull off the ball. Which, by the way, is what Uggla had been doing a lot….

In the wake of this week’s blockbuster deal in which the Dodgers seemingly replaced half their roster, Rosie reports today that they are still seeking another starting pitcher. I am trying to fathom this. The Dodgers just took on $248MM in salary obligations, and they’re still out shopping. To be a little more clear, allow me to give you the Dodgers’ new yearly salary obligation breakdown as it stands today (assuming Colletti hasn’t picked up CC Sabathia in the last 10 minutes), according to Cot’s Contracts:

“The club now has a $193.75MM in contract obligations for next season, $133.6MM for 2014, $90MM for 2015, $88.65MM for 2015, and another $90MM for 2016.”

    And they’re still shopping.

“How” you might ask? Simple. They have a new TV contract coming up this offseason. As asinine as it seems to suddenly pool all of these salaries together, the talent represented gives them incredible leverage when it comes to negotiating this contract. And as we have painfully learned here in The A, TV contracts drive the team bus.

Or in Atlanta’s case, our TV contract drives the team’s Mini Cooper.

Good to see (in a manner of speaking) you again Salty… You presence is sorely missed.

Aughh.. How did I forget it was Monday, otherwise known as guaranteed win night by the Braves opponents.

While Maholn did not pitch poorly, He did not pitch the required shutout needed by the Braves’ putrid offense.

As for Batista, throw him back on the scrap heap Frank, there has to be some other kid who actually can throw strikes available for mop up duty in the organization.

Okay, it’s Kris Medlen on the mound for the Braves tonight. He is about as automatic as the Braves have right now, I hope I can stay awake long enough to see him get another win..

yeah, Mondays…. as for Batista…I have to admit, it’s hard to watch games sometimes when you just figure the team isn’t going to score(and the Padres always seem to have a very good bullpen) so missed his “performance” but, explain it to me as to why he is on the club, and Cory Gearrin is in the minors?
Check out his stats…1 run in 11 innings, and hadn’t given up any runs in his last 10 games
    http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/_/id/30665/cory-gearrin
but he is in the minors…ok…
and Chad Durbin’s arm is going to fall off…I know, he’s not as “important” as the big 3, yet he is with Medlen in the rotation. You need other arms to call on…14 games this month and the month ain’t over….
At least Uggla got a hit, and hit a ball to CF that would have been out just about any other park…
Joe Simpson made a good point…doesn’t really care what a player, or team has done all season, what have they done in the past 10 games…Padres are a good club, since the all star break…I think they are 30-20 in the last 50 games…

Gil nailed Hanson a couple of years ago. His delivery has too many moving parts, and he’s a big guy. That only complicates getting all of the elements in sync. His curve was very good yesterday, but he couldn’t spot a fastball if it had just been him and the catcher. My son hit it yesterday, if Beachy were still around, it would be Tommy, who?

    He needs a complete mechanics make-over…not sure that’s possible..but a poorly located 88 mph fastball becomes a souvenir…fast!

He needs a complete mechanics make-over…

Actually, I think that may be one of the problems. He reworked some of those mechanics already in an effort to take some of the strain on his shoulder. All that really accomplished was to slow down an already tortoiselike delivery. And in the process, this still young 26-year-old (his birthday was Tuesday) has lost velocity off his fastball.

The key to his early success was a well placed 93-94 mph fastball. The key to his current woes is “a poorly located 88 mph fastball…” *Salty

He’s done. He’ll never again sit in the mid-90’s. He doesn’t have good enough stuff to live otherwise. When you have the kind of changeup that Medlen has, that Glavine and Maddux had, you don’t have to throw hard. Hanson has “a poorly located 88 mph fastball”, a loopy curve, and little else.

Hanson should be in his prime right now… an ace racking up double digit K’s in every start on his way to 15+ wins a season. Instead, he’s destined to be a 4th starter for Kansas City…

what? doesn’t anyone want to talk about that great game last night?? 🙄
That was truly a team loss. Looked like once again Minor wasn’t going to get any support, but Roy Halladay looked terrible, (and hurt, I sure hope it isn’t too serious, seems like one of the good guys) braves offense finally came alive…but still left what, 10 men on base? Kimbrel made a rare mistake, but it cost the team dearly. McCann made a great throw to get Juan Pierre at 2nd, but he had another ball go between his legs(can’t recall if a run scored because of it, or not) don’t understand how after all these years he can’t go to his knees to block those…Phils look…well, hungry. Interesting. They really are playing good ball, small ball, big ball. they are 8 back in the WC. Nah, they can’t do what they did to the Mets a few years back, from 7 back to the title, right? Too thin a lineup….if they did get into the WC, Charlie Manual needs to win manager of the decade! 😉

Jack Wilson, as expected, was cut. Hinske wasn’t, sadly enough. After striking out to end the game, he is now hitting .197. Swell that’s hes a swell guy…but Overbay was/is actually hitting. Watch him get a few big hits, and now be able to play in the playoffs, IF the braves make the playoffs. Moylan will get the callup too.

Got to say, Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy are two guys who you could build your pitching staff around. Mike Minor appears to be maturing at a rapid rate so soon Tim Hudson will be the 5th guy on the staff,

Today’s game had such a different feel to it after watching the Braves go through the motions for the past week and a half.

And what of Uggla? Think he will get his head out of his butt and realize he has to produce to play on a contender? I’ll be honest, I like the guy. I thought he brought a level of intensity to the team but like Jason Bay of the Mets, you have to figure it out pretty quick or face the fact you can be replaced by a guy making a fraction of the money you are.

Message to Dan, stop trying to hit everything to Macon and settle for some well placed gappers to right. Maybe he should review the film of Andruw Jones flailing away in his last two years in Atlanta and see how fast your average can drop. Homeruns don’t come very often if that is all you are trying to hit because pitchers will off speed you to death.

Stay tuned… this isn’t done yet. Fredi knows if the Braves don’t make the playoffs this season, he will likely be coaching third base for the Astros next season.

Heh, ok, I missed the game…but, that’s ok. Medlen gave up exactly…zero earned runs over 9 innings…wow. Why are they not saying how many scoreless innings he tossed, on the ESPN site? Unearned runs don’t count, right? Orel’s streak, Maddux’s streaks, no unearned runs??? Something is fishy…speaking of fishy….all of the sudden, it was all about an inning’s limit on Medlen? That’s why he wasn’t starting all season long??? Right…sounds like they just didn’t want to admit they didn’t think Medlen would be this good…

If I were a pitcher and folks were comparing me to Greg Maddux, especially in Atlanta, I would have to be continually dosed with reality to keep my feet on the ground and my head out of the clouds.

Ber, ESPN did make a big deal of of it after the run was given up….

Pretty cheesy way to lose a chance at history but to be fair, some pretty spectacular plays had been made behind Meds in his past few starts. He brings such an energy to the game that everyone seems to up their play behind him.

I keep looking for my prior comments about Medlen when he first came on the scene three years ago but I’m too lazy to search that long… Lets just say I saw him coming… well, almost…

    1) Throw strikes; don’t try to be too fine with the corners
    2) Locate the fastball with pinpoint accuracy
    3) Work quickly; control the pacing

Lazy? Perhaps, sometimes I think baseball players forget they are involved in a sport where agility and finesse, as well as just plain God given talent are the keys to success, not brute strength and the ability to club a batting practice fastball 500 feet.

Dan Uggla is another perfect example of what I am talking about. He bulked up over the winter lifting dead weights. Results, really. really high pop ups…. He is not flexible enough to adjust to off speed pitches.

Hitting is all about timing and balance and hitting the ball with the sweet spot of the bat. Sure, you can feast on 4A pitching but good pitchers of the likes of Haliday and Hammels and Josh Johnson have a field day against guys who are always trying to slug the ball. That and pulling the ball down the line like Andruw (I’m a dead pull hitter) Jones. Of course, to be fair, Andruw bulked up on cheese burgers but I digress.

Tone up, not bulk up…. Why am I not a conditioning coach??? Oh yeah, too many milk shakes….

Alrighty now, that is a little bit better. Mike Minor has figure out that in order to win, he must not allow any runs whatsoever… Fredi G finally understands that sometimes you have to bring in your closer in the 8th inning when the game is on the line in order to be in a position to use him in the 9th. Two important lessons learned last night…

Okay Ber, when you wake up and read this, remember there is a game at noon today….

just caught some of the game last night, and saw the highlights of the game on baseball tonight. Clearly, the offense is in a funk again, but the pitching is spectacular! Still not sure what exactly was switched with Minor. I still see pitches that seem very hittable, that don’t get hit. Hey, whatever, he’s fooling hitters with is more than smoke and mirrors, just cause I don’t get it, well, I’m not always the sharpest of tacks! 😉
Gil, I think you are on to something with Uggla. If nothing else, he should sign up for a yoga class(think McCann still does any yoga?)

… and as is par for the course, I just remembered that the game is on.

As for Minor: location, location, location. It’s all about pitch location. He isn’t picking at corners anymore, falling behind and serving up gopher balls. He’s locating his pitches and getting ahead in counts. Ask Medlen how important that aspect is.

I think I would rather be the middle relief guy and not the starter in the Rockies pitching scheme. Perhaps it is a way to keep their young staff from building up the type of stats that can garner a big payday in arbitration…

Anyway, what a weird way to win a game. I’ll take it though.

So, I wonder how many intentional walks the Mets will issue to keep the Braves from scoring this weekend?

I thought Maholm pitched an interesting game, bent a lot but did not break. I guess I am still not accustom to seeing him pitch all that much.

Those river marsh mosquitoes have been gearing up for this for centuries. Just ask anyone who dares to see the Sound & Light show at the battleship in the summer – where free cans of mosquito spray are handed out to visitors by the crate-load every night. The bugs are totally immune to it by now. These games, if played, will be done in record time. Players will probably have to have shots of some sort before the end of the season.

I know Tim Hudson is a warrior, a great pitcher, but I sure hope Freddi realizes Medlen has to start the 1 game playoff(Hoping that we can hold the lead we now have in the WC race)
I love how the bullpen being dead tired last sept had nothing to do with anything, yet the bullpen,(well, not Chad Durbin) is much, much more rested and the bullpen has responded in kind. Sorta like they keep trying to have us believe Medlen was expected to be on an innings limit all along. ANYONE really believe that? If that was so, wouldn’t they have told us that before he turned into the best starter in the NL after the A.S. break???
Oh well, in Freddi’s defense…he does seem to learn from his mistakes, at least the very big ones…

Yes, it was very frustrating to see the Braves leave guys on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. It would not have been so bad if we had not seen it dozens of times before.

Now having Uggla come up big was a different story.

Last night was all about Gio going for his 20th win until it was not…. I don’t get how the Braves are so disrespected by the ESPN crew until they are forced to realize the Braves have the best pen in the majors, period… Getting to them can be a bit of a mine field sometimes however. The fact that Mike Minor has really come around has not hurt the Braves either.

On a side note, Cory Gearing looks really good when he is not over used. A lot like Jonny Venters in that respect.

Nice little win streak going for the Braves now, look for them to be flat as yesterday’s uncapped Coke tonight against the Marlins. Something about late games and travel that takes it out of you, that and it’s Monday…

Sensitivity “training” is simply an attempt at brain-washing. Hitleresque, indeed. It is a sop to the politically correct bunch and simply teaches someone what not to say in public. Doesn’t change a person’s MIND at all. Controlled speech, controlled public behavior, controlled workplaces, controlled employers = as much control over as much of a person’s life as possible. Are there things that shouldn’t be said out of common courtesy and decency? Yes, certainly, but you can’t force a person to think only a certain way or to have only certain (PC-approved) opinions. Remember when simple civility governed an individual’s behavior? Don’t know about y’all but I miss that.

I am very offended when the Lord’s name is used in vain and base and profain language is spewed in front of young and impressionable people as well as myself.

Once upon a time, certain words were not used in “polite” company. That said, I learned the hard way that such words uttered too often had a tendency to slip out at some of the most inopportune times. I thought Minor looked very good. The kid has really matured this year as a pitcher. The triple was what it was, I thought Bourn mis-judged it bit but sometimes those balls are just tweeners.

As for the bomb hit by Howard, it is why you want to face him with no one on base. He guessed right on a change up. That blast would have gone at least 450 feet if unimpeded.

Chipper got his wish on the double that just missed going out. He said that if you hit a ball 400 feet, you should at least get a double out of it.

So, the Braves magic number is three.

Nice game yesterday, still a bit frustrating in that the Braves failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities. That said, Cliff Lee is not exactly chopped liver. Perhaps other teams match up a little better against lefties than the Braves but still, he pitched a heck of a game, just that Huddy was very good yesterday. Makes one think that this year’s edition of the Bravos is in a much different place than the 2011 team. The bullpen is stronger, the starting pitching is better, the everyday line up is healthier.

So, talk about mixed emotions, you have to root for whoever is playing the Nationals to give the Braves a chance to get into the driver’s seat for the playoffs. You just don’t want them to get too hot in the mean time.

And then there is Tommy Hansen… boy, do you get the feeling that there is something really, really wrong with him physically that everyone is keeping mum about or just don’t know. Boris must be thinking to himself, “How did I get myself tied to two turkeys like Hansen and Jurrjins?”

I would not be surprized to see either one of those guys signing a minor league contract with someone next spring just to get an opportunity to make someone’s club in 2013. At this point, I give Ben Sheets a better shot at being with the Braves in 2013 than either JJ or Tommy.

Beachy likely will follow the same pattern as Medlen coming off Tommy John surgery next season and would not really be a factor for the first 2/3rds of the season.

Yeah Gil, I know what you mean…I feel like a spoiled brat at times whining about the lack of offense, they did win the game! And Hudson…amazing. 16 wins, and he missed April…
I would think they’d just shut down Hanson. Guess who has the most strikeouts? Yep… 4.46 ERA. Still 26. So, if they can’t trade him during the offseason, I bet he will still be given many chances to be a starter next year.

Yes Ber, likely he will get a big raise and a chance to start. Who knows just exactly what Wren and company have in mind. Pretty sure JJ will be looking for work. I hope he gets himself straighten out. Just not against the Braves.

Now, more baseball. The Nats crushed the Brew Crew 12-2 today. Mixed emotions folks. Mixed emotions… Going to be really tough for the Braves to catch them now but you never know. That said, I think I would rather give Ben Sheets another shot and let Hansen sit out a start or two….

Chipper Jones was 2-9 with an RBI double in his final series at Philadelphia. His final career numbers against the Phillies:
    245 games, .331 avg. 49 HR, 152 RBI, 1.036 OPS.

At Citizens Bank Park: 59 games, .300 avg. 11 HR, 32 RBI, .943 OPS.

They’ll DFA Jurjjens for sure, but not Hanson… not yet. Not with Beachy still on the mend. Plus, Hanson still has some trade value because he’s young and has done it. Some coach will believe that he’s the one to correct Hanson’s mechanics and get back the 7-8 mph Tommy has lost over the last couple of years. He’ll be worth a middle reliever or 2nd tier prospect at least.

IMO they’ll go to Spring Training with him regardless. They have to see where Julio Teheran is and if he’s ready to step in. The same could be said about Delgado. And do they pick up Huddy’s option? I think it’s a no-brainer, but I’m not trying to save a mil here and there, either.

Too many questions regarding next year’s rotation to cut ties with both Jurjjens and Hanson. But JJ’s a goner for sure.

Morning folks, yes, the fact that Beachy will not be available for the full year does play a part. As for the youngsters, well, we have seen the growing pains that can occur with a talented youngster while they actually learn their craft.

Hudson’s cost is a real bargain when you look at the current prices for number ones and two for a staff.

I still hope the Braves will give Ben Sheets another shot. Conditioning from the start of spring training should make a huge difference in Big Ben’s durability.

Hansen knows he is pitching like dog crap right now but does not appear to be able to make the adjustments required to change that fact. JJ is young too but it does not seem to make a lot of difference to the Braves organization.

No one will make a trade for a player they feel they can pick up for pennies on the dollar anyway.

The one injury I have yet to see a pitcher come back from is the dreaded torn labrum. Always associated with loss of control and velocity. We have seen many pitcher come back from Tommy John but never anyone from a torn labrum. Just think, John Smoltz…

As for Smoltz stating that he would hold Medlen and Hudson for the NLDS and start neither in the Wild Card Play-in game, I disagree.

Starting Medlen in the WC game lines him up for either a needed game late in the NLDS, or Game 1 of the NLCS. I think it bodes well for the Braves to stay the course as is. If their bats can avoid taking Ambien again, I think they have as much potential as anyone going in. Gotta avoid the slumps… need Bourne to be re-Bourne.

I look for Fredi to rest both Bourne and Prado once the Braves have accomplished all they can this season prior to the playoffs. The two days Bourne had as a results of his off day yesterday and the jammed thumb on Sunday likely will help also. I know Chipper wants to play all of the remaining home games so I do not expect to see him against the Pirates except perhaps a pinch hit appearance or maybe just one start.

I know the Braves are trying to get Hansen going again but I really don’t see it happening. The kid really does not have it right now. Tired arm/shoulder whatever, he is struggling. I would leave him off the roster for the first series at least. So many travel and off days in the playoffs reduce the need for more than 3 real starters and the fourth would have to be Malhon right now.

I don’t know what the deal is with Sheets and no one is really saying right now.

I also expect to see Overbay get a start or two at first and J-Hey get a couple of more days off as well.

That said, the series against Pittsburg could look a lot like a B squad game. Depends on who they think could use at-bats.

Let’s see, line up could look like this

    Overbay/Hinske at 1st
    Pasternicky 2nd
    Francisco at 3rd
    Simmons SS (needs the at-bats)
    Baker LF
    Johnson CF
    Constanza RF
    Boscan C
    Teheran or Sheets SP

Rest of the team sleeping on cots in the club house except for Chipper who needs a sleep comfort bed flown in on the team plane for each stop so he will be ready for the playoffs.

Of course the Braves might get fined for not playing enough major leaguers ….

As for Sheets, usually when someone kind of quietly disappears after suddenly struggling, there is often an untold injury involved. It could well be that as a courtesy to FA-to-be Sheets, the Braves are just quietly playing out the string.

I enjoyed reading this – thanks for the link, Gil!

    “4. Kris Medlen.

Baseball’s hottest pitcher will start twice this week — Tuesday against the Marlins and Sunday against the Mets, which conveniently puts him on track to start the wild-card game. In 10 starts since joining the rotation on July 31, Medlen is 8-0 with a 0.76 ERA and just seven runs allowed. The Braves have won all 10 of those starts and 21 straight games he’s started going back to 2010, the third-longest such streak in the live-ball era (the Yankees and Giants each won 22 in a row behind Whitey Ford and Carl Hubbell, respectively).

Prediction: The Braves make it 23 in a row behind Medlen. Does that turn Medlen (9-1, 1.51 ERA, 125 innings on the season) into a viable Cy Young candidate? I still think he ranks behind top contenders such as R.A. Dickey, Gio Gonzalez and Johnny Cueto, and teammate Craig Kimbrel will also have supporters, but Medlen will certainly receive some deserved down-the-ballot recognition. Oh … he’ll then win the wild-card game as well.”

Raisins, I was thinking the same thing last night, he will get two quick strikes and then starts to get cute. Then he cannot find the strike zone. He looks like Mike Minor before he got his head straight. Perhaps he does not think he has enough oomph to his pitches to blow away a batter or perhaps not enough movement to prevent good contact but he slows the game down so much that it makes it painful to watch. Almost a human rain delay…

It is good to see Uggla getting his confidence back and coming through in some big spots. You don’t always have t hit a homer to drive in three runs. That two run single he hit last night was a thing of beauty.

Looks like the Nats are not going to roll over for us. Two pretty big wins against the Phillies this week.

Still, I like the way the Braves are playing right now. It is not like they are limping into the post season as we have seen them do so many times in the past.

Gil, that is exactly what it appears to be with Hanson. He is not confident enough in his stuff to throw strikes. He gets ahead, then tries to paint the edges. He needs to have a session with Minor and Medlen and let them explain to him the merits of throwing strikes. Then again, his stuff isn’t that great anymore, so maybe the point is moot…

And no way he’s on my post-season roster. Would you waste a playoff roster spot with your 5th best starter? (6th if you count Sheets; maybe 7th if you count Delgado…)

I think the Nats will not let Braves catch them, just too much ground to make up on a pretty stout team. What’s the magic number? 2?

It should be interesting to watch the Cards try to make a statement against the Nats and vice versa. Now, the real key to me for beating the Nats is get into their bullpen early. The Braves got rid of a lot of ghost with their sweep of the Nats at home a couple of weeks ago.

Great game last night from Mike Minor. One thing you no longer hear is how the Braves wasted a first round pick on Magic Mike. The kid has become very impressive.

Yes, we can only dream on retaining the services of a player of David Wright’s caliber. More likely the Braves will try to find a heavy hitter they can plug into left field. After all, that is where most weak armed and slow footed power hitters end up in the National League.

So many things can happen during the off season, Best make the most of the opportunities you are presented with. Braves look like a team that can make a pretty deep run into the post season this fall. So many years we have seen them kind of limp home, This year it is more like Secretariat charging down the home stretch in the Belmont.

One last thing, anyone else notice that Kimbrel ricochet of a 98 mph fastball off David Wright’s cup and into the home plate umpire’s neck. “Two with one blow” My advice it to never dig in when a flame thrower is on the mound. Only thing Craige didn’t hit last night was the bull…. Sure rang Wright’s bell however… CLANG!!!!

This is a totally sweepable series. And only 3 back of the Nats and still mathematically in the division race. Meanwhile, the Nats have 3 IN Philly against one of the better teams since the ASB.

Gotta say, it’s possible. Likely? Uh, no. But definitely possible. John Lannan vs. Kyle Kendrick today… gotta like Kendrick. Edwin Jackson vs Cliff Lee on Wednesday… Lee looks good. But Tuesday? The Nats are tossing Cy Young candidate Gio Gonzalez vs. the Phillies TBA. Now, I don’t know alot about this TBA guy, he may be a minor leaguer, but I gotta say, the odds probably favor Gio. Glad it’s on Tuesday so that we can rest Huddy on Wednesday.

The Braves drive to the division is a lot like Europe’s chances for a comeback yesterday after being down 10-6 on Saturday. As long as you are alive, you have hope. Like our little friend Kris Medlin said, “You never know what winning is all about until you experience losing”. Very profound words from a dude from the left coast…

There is no love lost between the Phillies and the Nats and I expect there will be even less after the upcoming series. The ‘fightens have had a very disappointing year and would like nothing better than to knock the upstarts down a peg or two.

One thing for sure, neither have much bullpen depth to go with their starters. I can remember the Braves having that same Achilles heel a season or two ago.

The Phillies knocked the Braves out of the playoffs last season, don’t be surprise to see the same happen, although to a lesser degree, with the Nationals.

Now the Braves… Time to put the boot heel on the throat of the Pirates and sweep. Worry about Friday or even Thusday when the happen. There is no room for error. That means playing Prado at third and whoever in left for a couple of days. Let the old man rest a couple of days, we’ll survive it. If the Braves are out of it, then it means Juan can get two starts at third and Hinske can play left. Let Prado have a day off on Wednesday.

I sure would like to see Ben Sheets go an inning or two but it may well come down to Wednesday. Come to think of it, it may come down to Tommy Hanson on Tuesday and to be truthful, that is really scary.

Divorce and Retirement: Two Emotional Endings for Chipper Jones

On behalf of The Siemon Law Firm posted in divorce on Sunday, September 2, 2012

Chipper Jones has not only been a star player for the Braves for nearly two decades. He has established himself as one of the best switch-hitters to ever play Major League Baseball. In this, his final season, the tributes have come pouring in from all over the country.

Jones’s family is not traveling with him, however, because he and his wife are going through an Atlanta divorce. The couple has three sons, ages 12, 8 and 7.

It is the second divorce for Chipper Jones. He also has a child, now 15, from his first marriage.

A celebrity divorce, in Atlanta or anywhere else, often contains issues and experiences that are common to other types of divorces. One of those experiences is the feeling of making a transition that is difficult but necessary. A new life is beckoning, yet the ending of the old one can be challenging.

Chipper Jones openly acknowledges this. But he has resolved to be more involved in his children’s lives going forward.

That involvement could include bringing them to Braves’ games next year. Jones and the team have not to clarify what his role will be, but it seems likely he will remain with the Braves organization in some capacity.

To be sure, for someone who thrived so much on game competition, ending a career is bittersweet – even though injuries have increasingly turned playing into an exercise in pain management.

So Chipper Jones is simultaneously experiencing two emotional experiences: retirement and divorce. On the field, the climax is less than a month away. The final game of his career is scheduled to come against the New York Mets on September 30. Fittingly, it will be in Atlanta.

I get awfully confused with who can, and who cannot play in the playoffs…I should dig into the rules, somewheres…I think it’s also different for pitchers vs. position players. I’ve seen pitchers come up after Sept (e.g.K-Rod with the Angels) and pitch in the playoffs(Sparkie Lyle couldn’t for the Phillies in 1980, again not sure why) but Overbay wasn’t on the roster til Sept 1st, and that’s why I was griping about Hinske being on the roster, when clearly Overbay is a more dangerous hitter…I do think though that he is really a favorite of the other players, a team leader…just a thought…

In reality, the chances of the Nats getting swept were far narrower than the Braves sweeping the pirates, and the chances of both occurring were thinner than Presbo’s constant excuses. The way I see it, the Braves can now make the proper preparations for the WC game on Friday.

Now there is another interesting development… the Dodgers are making a serious run at the Cards. Both teams are putting all their energy toward making that last playoff spot. That’s a good thing. It can also make for a team on a serious high roll coming into Atlanta.

Best case scenario… the Dodgers tie the Cards for the last playoff spot on the last day of the regular season; the Cards have to fly from St. Louis to LA for the tie-breaker game on Thursday; the Cards win and have to turn around and fly cross country to Atlanta for the play-in, er, Wild Card game on Friday. That’s 2 long flights and 3 games in about 36 hours. Whew! 😯

I had hoped Ben would be back next season with renewed vigor but it is not to be He was truly magical until the shoulder betrayed him. I hope he pitches two scoreless tonight.

So Chipper strides to the plate in the 6th for what will be his last official regular season at bat, and turns on a fastball by A.J. Burnett for a clean single to RF. In all fairness, the “fastball” looked like the batting practice variety to me. IMO, it was a nice gesture by Burnett to give the ol’ Battleaxe a nice hittable pitch as a show of respect.

And as I type this, Burnett fields a little chopper to the mound, turns toward 3B with an easy shot to throw out Chipper, but opts for 1B instead. Couldn’t get the ball out of his glove cleanly? Nobody covering? Not sure… maybe another sign of respect. Wouldn’t surprise me.

J.C. Boscan drives in Chipper from 3B, and it looked like Chipper tossed his batting gloves into the stands as he was heading into the dugout.

eBay-bound perhaps? Wait 5 years for his 1st ballot HOF induction, and those things will bring a fortune…

You sure can’t, Raisins! Great story for both Ben and Chipper. I salute Ben for pitching that inning! Chipper: “He blew it all out on one inning.” Reminds me of the last inning that closer Billy ——- (WHAT is his last name?? Brain isn’t talking to me tonight, apparently.) threw. It was a beauty to watch. Though, I don’t think we realized that that would be his last inning when we saw it. He went out ‘proud’, as we would say around here.

That was a great game yesterday! 🙂 Sure takes the taste of losing 2 games to the Pirates out of your mouth…one thing, and I feel like a nit picker here….I was thinking, wow, poor guy, arms just not able to do what he wants it to anymore, but with no fears of pitching again, he didn’t have to worry, and let it all hang out, hence the 95.
Then I hear after the game from the reporter(Hart?) that his arm was fine, but clearly he wasn’t in the braves plans if he didn’t pitch til Oct 3rd. Then we hear that on the taped interview, just in passing… I REALLY hope he didn’t retire over miscommunication….”they” may have been thinking, well, he can shut it down this year, and he can try to earn a shot next spring. But, tell a guy, you know????
What I saw, granted, it was the guys last inning, but he hadn’t pitched in any games in over a month…he could have been a nice weapon out of the bullpen, if not the 5 game series(IF we get that far) but for the 7 game series having a righty hit 94-95 and with his curve…if nothing else, he’d be better than Hanson, who I sure hope doesn’t keep someone better from getting into the playoffs…
I kinda wish I hadn’t heard that story….I was thinking of writing a lead praising FF, and between Sheets , then Delgado and Tehran pitching, none of whom had pitched since the end of August(Hey, lets blow out one of the studs arms in a meaningless game, with them trying to impress FF!)…just, I don’t know…did Bobby Valentine take over for FF?
Anyway, Sheets, no matter what happened, handled it with a ton of class, and it really was touching to see both he and Chipper getting so much love from the fans and the team…

Great opines guys (and gal) .. Yes, I had hopes that Ben would be in the Braves plans next season, There are ways to allow for his kids to be part of his life even though he is in the big leagues. I see Prince Fielder’s kids with him in batting practice all the time. Heck, even us pour smucks who had to actually put in at least 8 hours away from home each day found a way to make it work.

Someone of Sheets’ statue should have been able to go to the GM and ask what the Braves’ long term plans were. Oh well, I guess Ben is able to do what he really wants in life and I am not going to blame him for that.

OK… had to let things settle in before I posted something on the world wide interweb that will live in perpetuity.

I said it before the fact, so this is not sour grapes: I hate the one game play-in format. I have come to accept the Wild Card simply because it’s necessary with the odd number of 3 divisions per league. I still do not like that teams are rewarded for coming close. 2nd place is not the winning place. But Wild Card in and of itself is another argument for another time. To widen it to 2 Wild Card teams? Now you are rewarding even lower mediocrity…

Now… the beauty of the MLB playoff series is that the best team has a chance to show itself over 7 games. It’s ridiculous to reward a team for winning 1 game. Ridiculous. (I would be saying the same thing had the Braves won, just from a little happier standpoint.)

A one game play-in simply means that anything can happen.,, as was evidenced by the idiocy on display in Atlanta. Did that cost Atlanta the game? No one will ever know. But bases loaded with 1 out is a whole lot better than 2nd and 3rd with 2 out. Not to mention that rallies are often achieved on momentum. Any momentum achieved by the Braves was summarily squashed by the horrendous call by one umpire. And to make it more ridiculous, he was the flippin’ outfield umpire. How in the name of Skip Carey can an Infield Fly Rule be called by an outfield umpire?

I am so disappointed in Fredi Gonzalez for not taking the issue further, He gives up way too easily, a trait that might be rubbing off on his team. Just sayin’. But again, that is another topic for another rant.

I love my Braves. I always will. But Bud Selig is making me lose affection for Major League Baseball every single day.

I’m with you, Gil. My season is over.

Even if it HAD been an infield fly rule, the fact remains that neither the infielder nor the outfielder touched it. It dropped untouched in the grass. Think trap instead of clean catch. Think – well, never mind. I never knew the infield extended 50-some feet into the outfield. And Joe Torre denied the Braves protest – which doesn’t surprise me. No matter what happened on the field, the score was going to stand. Got a TV schedule to maintain, after all.

Now that 2012 is over, I have been pondering 2013. What a weird offseason this will be. For the first time in 19 years, the Braves have no idea who will stand on the hot corner. 2 pitchers the Braves seemed ready to build around just 2 years ago will likely both be someplace other than The Happiest Place On Earth in February. The long sought CF and leadoff guy will likely be opening a very large bank account in another city. And the guy seen widely as the most likely to receive the leadership torch from Chipper may not even be active for the early part of the season.

Frank, you have a really tough job coming up.

That said, Frank also has a really good core to build around. I’ll start with 3 names: Heyward, Freeman, Prado. That’s a great start. I’ll even add Simmons to that list. I love the kid. Now pitching. The grizzled vet Tim Hudson is an easy option decision for 2013. Follow that with the M’s: Medlen, Maholm and Minor, and you have a pretty darn good starting rotation regardless of #5. Speaking of #5, Beachy will fit in somewhere around or after the ASB, but until then, you have much ballyhooed up 7 comers Delgado and Teheran.

In the bully, O’Ventbrel comes back again, along with Avilan who was very good in his first season here. The battle for the other spots will be a good one, with Moylan, Martinez, Gearrin and others all capable of getting out ML hitters.

I’m not worried about pitchers in the least.

    Now… hitters.

We will need: either a 3B or a LF, and likely a CF. And somebody’s gotta leadoff. In my opinion, Frank will shop for a LF since there will be alot nore options than 3B. So, replacing 2/3 of the OF and the leadoff guy. Tough one.

Prediction: Either Delgado or Teheran is a goner. It’s time. There is no room for both of them, and they cannot develop anymore. One will be used to obtain 1 aforementioned OF. The other OF will come via FA. But don’t look for Hamilton or Bourne. Too much $$ for one guy. Victorino? Maybe… I can see it. As for leadoff, Victorino would fit that bill, but no one has mentioned Simmons for that role. I could see it. He ought to be a candidate. At least in my opinion.

Biggest offseason question IMO: who catches until Mac is back? Ross? Guess what… he’s no longer under contract. Shocker, right? That one flew under the radar. My money says that Frank makes Ross his first order of business after exercising the options on Huddy and Mac. I hope he gets it done. Then.. who is BUC? Christian Martinez? Still a couple of years away, IMO. Maybe I’m wrong.

Martin cannot do everything. (OK, he probably can do it, but he really shouldn’t… 😉 )

So… according to The Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders, the Rockies are likely to shop CF Dexter Fowler for young pitching. That would be 26yo, switch-hitting w/ .389 OBP Dexter Fowler who is not FA eligible until 2016 and who just happens to have played his HS ball at Milton HS in Atlanta suburb Alpharetta.

I believe that Frank might be looking to trade young pitching for an impact CF.

V, interesting…I just wonder if they would trade one of the 2 now, when they wouldn’t for Borne…but of course, the GM in Houston was clearly not very bright, didn’t seem to get anyone’s top prospects for him or Pence, and all the other players over 24 they traded away….
as for the Yankees…they still have so much tied up to players like A-Rod, Jeter(amazingly, he’s still worth it) Tex, etc…not a bit of sympathy mind you…
of course, just read Swisher thinks he should get a Jayson Werth north of 100 Mil contract…Yankees likely won’t go for that…scratch him off the braves list too.
I got a bit depressed reading the readers digest version of the Wren interview on MLBTR.
Braves would go after “premium” players…but of course…Then he talks like your grandpa would about the high cost of players…(hmmm, can’t find that now, but know I read that!) oh, found it…man, eyes are old…
It would take a “very, very big piece” to trade Randall Delgado or Julio Teheran this winter. The trade market does figure to be in play for the Braves though, as Wren said he won’t be “going outrageous salary-wise” on free agents. The team will be “looking for premium players,” but Wren cautions they’re not looking to add a player to the team as much as they are looking to add value. If they feel that adding two players can give them more than one premium name, they’ll pursue that route instead. Read, we are going to buy low, and keep are fingers crossed that they will help us beat the Nats….rriiiiight….
    also from the article…
Wren says he’s looking forward to a “focused” offseason. The front office recognizes that they have to replace Jones at third base, and they hope to retain Michael Bourn, whose contract expired at season’s end. The team would like to address center field and the leadoff position in the same move — a role which Bourn can obviously fill. The Braves contacted Bourn’s representatives about an extension in Spring Training but were told to wait until after the season to engage in negotiations.
Atlanta would love to have David Ross back in the fold in 2013. Wren spoke very highly of his backup catcher to O’Brien.
The Braves chose not to have Brian McCann undergo an MRI with a dye injection during the season because the recovery is too long. McCann will undergo that test in the near future, which could reveal a need for surgery, but for the time being the Braves believe their catcher needs only rest to recover.

Nice that he speaks highly of Ross. Like you said V, too bad they didn’t think to offer an extension during the season. Wonder if, as Tony Francona calls him, the best backup catcher in the game, if other teams might offer him a contract too? 🙄
We know that it’s unlikely that they can keep Bourn. So, gotta trade a good arm. Ok, still a hole or two. Move Prado to 3rd? Or put him in at 2nd, and move Uggla to 3rd? Still have to fill LF. Gotta go cheap. Cheap “premium” Who??? Another arm traded away, cuz team owned by a barely interested Multi Billionaire who doesn’t want to spend the going rate for players today?

Italic crazy…sorry…and I forgot the part that angered me the most….

The Braves chose not to have Brian McCann undergo an MRI with a dye injection during the season because the recovery is too long. McCann will undergo that test in the near future, which could reveal a need for surgery, but for the time being the Braves believe their catcher needs only rest to recover
yeah, put this off, perhaps make it worse…if I was McCann, I’d like to know what was wrong…

V, time to be the voice of reason again, even if just briefly…cuz, I have a bad taste in my mouth right now…I see us as being like every other team in the league was when the braves were on their roll…nats have more power arms, more potent bats and most importantly, more moola…

Oh, keep remembering stuff I forgot….
Jair Jurrjens’ situation is different from Tommy Hanson’s, in Wren’s mind. Wren spoke more definitely of Hanson’s future with the team than that of Jurrjens. The Braves “will have a determination” on Jurrjens’ future this winter. Jurrjens earned $5.5MM in 2012 and is a non-tender candidate for 2013 in the mind of MLBTR’s Ben Nicholson-Smith.
    http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/10/wren-talks-bourn-free-agency-catchers-hanson.html#disqus_thread
Really? Did he happen to see any of Hanson’s last starts? Honestly, from a strictly pitching motion standpoint, I’d give JJ more of a chance of turning it around someday.
Perhaps talking Hanson up hoping some team didn’t scout the braves in Sept and will give up Dexter Fowler for him! 😉

B, I will try to be said Voice of Reason once again…

As to McCann, he has a cyst in his shoulder that may or may not require surgery to be removed. The cyst will not cause any further damage by waiting. The dye test itself would have surely knocked Mac out of service for more time than anyone was willing to give up that late in the season. So, the delay was all about 2012 – a season that everyone except Joe Torre thought might give Chipper a storybook ending.

As for Frank’s comments about “not spending outrageous money” on one player… yes, it likely prevents him from re-signing Bourn, from signing Josh Hamilton or Nick Swisher, etc. As for Bourn, he’s already 30 years old, and every year of his multi-year deal he will literally be in decline. If you pay him what Boras will demand in the market, be ready to have Jose Constanza as your LF next season, because Frank will shoot all of his bullets in one shot. Same goes for Hamilton or Swisher.

It’s no big surprise that Prado will almost certainly move back to 3B for 2013. There are almost no impact 3B available (that we know of… Frank can be sneaky sometimes). So you have to acquire 2 OF. I am still of the opinion that Frank will sign one good FA and trade for one very good/premium OF.

Don’t forget, too, that you have to look at signing Prado to a multi-year deal, else he goes FA after next year.

So if we are correct to assume that Frank has somewhere in the neighborhood of $30MM to spend this offseason (nice neighborhood, by the way), it would be unwise to spend $20MM+ on any one player. As he said, and I completely agree, “we are trying to build a team, not acquire one player”.

The Braves do not need an “ace” for the rotation, and they don’t have to find a “star” to sell seats. They have a very, very good core of young players, all breaking through into stardom themselves. What the Braves need is to fill out the open spots with solid specific parts. Must have a leadoff guy, must have good defense in CF, must have a RH power bat. That’s doable with 2 “premium” players, but not with 1 “outrageous salary”.

For my money, I try to trade for Dexter Fowler (SH, leadoff, premium CF defense) and sign Shane Victorino (SH, premium LF defense). I bat Fowler leadoff (S), Victorino 2nd (S), Prado 3rd (R), Heyward cleanup (L), Freeman 6th (L), Mac (L)/Ross (R) and/or Uggla (R) 6th and 7th, SImmons 8th (R), and have a heckuva lineup.

You may not have a 30+HR guy, unless Uggla returns and Heyward continues to blossom, but you’ll have tremendous OBP and speed.

Honestly, with the trio of Freeman, Mac and Uggla, you can mix and match those 3 as pitching matchups demand, and as hot bats dictate. Each of those guys can get hot for periods of time and necessitate moving him up in the order. That’s what you have a manager for. But that is another discussion for another day…

    My opinion:

Until our current President turns us into the United Socialist States of Amerika, I cannot imagine a more fitting banner than Old Glory. Baseball is America’s game, after all…

I love the Bobby tribute in the center.

Chipper should be moved from the active side (left) to the HOF side (right), and our new star – No. 22, Mr. Heyward – should be added to the left.

Fredi should be there somewhere, I suppose, since he is our current leader, but not on the right with the greats. He hasn’t earned that honor.

    Just my opinion…

Great points guys, Again, I am not concerned as to how much the Braves have to spend. It is not my dough. When you here an organization starts using money as a reason, it is really just an excuse.

It would appear to me that a good lead off guy has long been a problem for the Braves. You can really get spoiled after having Furcal for so many years.

It sucks not being enough of a wonk to know all the up and coming kids in the minors who could become an impact guy. Someone who would really be worth a Delgado or a Teheran. Too bad there is no one out there who would be willing to give up a slew of players for someone on the Braves roster like the Braves gave up for Texiera. .

Re: Michael Bourn. I love the guy. He has been great for Atlanta for his 1 1/2 seasons here. Well, for about 1 season anyway. He faded badly toward the end of this season. Thumb injury? I’m sure that played a role. But folks, his game is built around his speed. He’s 30 now. If he gets the 6-7 year deal most expect he’ll receive, he’ll be 36 or 37 at the end of it, pulling down $13MM+ while playing LF and stealing about 12 bases. No thanks. We’ve already had Nate McLouth and Reggie Sanders. And those guys weren’t even that old…

I also have my browser page too wide it appears, the birthdays are off the screen on the right. I recall it being someone’s birthday, a year or so ago on facebook, and you saw all these folks wishing someone a happy birthday..guess they decided that was too busy, it was better for folks to get automated messages about games fewer and fewer people seem to play 😕 .

Morning all, Looks like the Reds came up short again, actually, 29 teams will feel that way soon. Nice to see a couple of new kids, the Nats and the Os go deep but that only makes the hurt a little deeper for a Braves fan. Lots of folks thinking all the money the Nationals paid for Jason Werth was well spent yesterday.

I can’t help but remember the heads up Ber gave us on Ibanez a couple of years ago. He sure has made a difference for the Phillies and the Yankees and for relatively little money too. Anyone else laying in the weeds you can point out for us Conrad?

I saw Pagan a couple of years ago in spring training when he was still with the Mets and came away thinking of how intense he was. His head always seems to be in the game.

Quickness is a pretty important quality for a centerfielder to have, maybe more than pure speed. Stolen bases are nice but sometimes for naught. I am more about quality steals rather than just stolen bases. Maybe someone will come up with a stat for that someday. Like, how many times a stolen base translates into a run vs just left on base because they walk the next guy to get to a lefty or righty or a guy with a sub .200 BA.

Also thinking of re-posting Raisins excellent opine as a blog lead. More airplay so to speak.

Ever feel like you have already posted something, that was just in your head? 😯 Guess the crazy spinning eyes emoticon is on another forum! 😉
Anyway, V and G, you have helped convince me a bit all is not lost…
DOB made some very interesting suggestions…one small problem with Pagan though. Why would the Giants not re-sign him?
I think V’s thought of the flyin Hawaiian seems a bit more likely. I think he would really have something to prove with when he played the Phils.
I’m just now able to pay some attention to the playoffs…sorry for the A’s, but man what a run! I sure hope the O’s can beat the dam…er the Dang Yankees. But the baseball gods have a neverending love for the Yankees, for some reason. You just KNOW Derek Jeter won’t play his last game and have an error help cost them a 1 game playoffs…
Giants. Meh. Well, they surprised me beating the Reds 3 straight. Poor Dusty.
Nats, Cards. Well, I was kinda thinking might as well have the team that beat us beat everyone else in the NL. Nats will have many a chance, and something about them going deep without their best pitcher…who they should have rested in April and May so he could be pitching now…it’s kinda Irksome (blog first?)
    Oh well..
Gil, a player in the weeds? Hmm, let me think about that…
V’s post would make a good lead! Plus, it will give me time to heal and write that blog in praise of Freddi…

Wow, anyone watch the Cards/Nats game last night??? I didn’t for much of the game…I decided the Cards should win since the braves where beaten by them. So, figured they would lose just like any team I had some or a lot of interest in seeing win. (Braves, A’s, O’s, Reds) Cards were down 6-0, then got as close as 6-5, when the Nats got a seemingly important/crushing additional run off the cards closer in the 8th to make it 7-5. Kept watching for some reason…glad I did. The Braves players should be forced to watch the cards 9th like ala Clockwork Orange, with eyes forced open, about 1000 times. No one trying to hit a homer(well, perhaps Matt Holiday tried, and that’s why he grounded out) but they were down to their last strike, twice in the inning, didn’t panic, knew the pitcher would keep tossing pitches low and outside, might bite once, but not again…two guys walked. Just very smart A.B.s.
Of course I did feel bad for the Nats fans as they almost got to go nuts twice, what with being a strike away not once, but twice in the 9th. That can’t be any fun. Bet the Cards face the Yankees in the W.S. No guessing on who I or most of America will be rooting for then!

Well, the Nats showed the value of having a shutdown closer last night…. Saw it coming when Gio started to collapse in the fifth. The Cards are like the Red Chinese in they keep pouring over the hill at you until you run out of bullets and they just overrun you.

Os lose so only team in the fray I can root for are the Tigers. Watch the Yankees sweep them… Sigh.

I thought V’s suggestion on trading for Fowler was a good one.

I’m not sure the Braves really need a true lead off guy or just a different approach when men are on base. Bobby always seemed to do okay with teams that hardly ever stole bases.

For the next couple of years, I’m thinking Simmons could do a creditable job. He has some speed and appears to like to bunt plus he has the power to ambush if necessary. Generally, lead-off guys have to be patient and be willing to see more pitches, look at the success the Nays have had with Jason Werth in the lead off spot.

I think it’s funny the word is Washington needs a player like Bourne, they need bull pen help more. We have seen it often enough in Atlanta to realize the difference a sound bull pen makes. They have more than enough offense. Got to be able to keep the other guys from scoring too. (Remember the Texiera trade?)

    Anyhoo…

Wow, have the Cards become the Yankees of the NL? 😉
I honestly think Storen was fine, if a team can lay off someone’s split/slider/cutter, and they have to try to pump fastballs past guys, unless they are named Kimbrel, or that guy from Cincy. that ain’t gonna work..

Ok, how’s this for a name???
Hes a righty…then you just need to get a CF’er like Fowler or Shane…
Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News writes that the Reds might not be able to match the best offers that come in for Ryan Ludwick, but the club may be able to come close enough to make the outfielder want to give them a discount out of loyalty. Ludwick and the Reds have a $5MM mutual option for 2013 but he is expected to decline it.

Perhaps we need to employ the Terry Pendleton equation. That is, to look at a guys career number while hitting at Turner Field (Fulton County Stadium West) when evaluating potential additions to the roster. It is a given that certain players prefer certain parks because of the subtle nuances of the batter’s eye and backgrounds. Terry had a career difference of nearly 100 points better at the old Fulton County Stadium than he had anywhere else.

I felt at the time the Nats scored a win by picking up Michael Morse a couple of seasons ago. He would have been a real asset to the Braves and at K-Mart prices too.

I think Josh Willingham’s name has come up several times as a possible addition. I don’t know the chemistry he had with Fredi G but I remember him being very raw in the outfield while in Florida and Washington. Maybe he just likes it in the American League better where defense is less of an issue?

There have been several players whom have ended up elsewhere even though I thought they would have been a excellent fit for the Braves. Who knows why some of these guys go elsewhere, More money, more playing time, family ties, old grudges? I don’t know but it would sure be nice to know.

Oh by the way, it was really sad to find that Derek Jeter broke his ankle making a play in the twelfth inning the other night. This after Ber’s pick, Raul Ibanez hit a two run dinger to tie up the game in the bottom of the ninth.

Reminded me a lot of the hi and lows the Braves experience in 2010 against the Giants after Hinske hit the go ahead home run.

Oh well, looks like the Cardinals are locked in. Not saying they will win it all but shows yet again the team with the best record is not always the team that can win it all. So many twist and turns in the play offs. I mean, did anyone really think Chipper would sail one into right field changing the entire complexion of the game?

Okay, as soon as CL gets the new lead back from the graphics department, I am sure she will post it.

Ber, it was one of the things I remember Skip Carey talking about when the Braves signed Terry to play third base. The point was made. and stuck with me, that teams often overlook the point of how a player fits with their park.

Teams usually try to tailor their team to the place where they play half of their games. It is not just the size of the home town crowd that makes the difference.

I think the slope of the pitcher’s mound in certain ballparks make a difference too. The height has to be regulation but the slope often subtle differences.

Having said that, I was thinking of the type of park that would be best suited for Tommy Hanson and I keep thinking the bases would have to be 120 feet apart rather than 90 and the fences would have to be moved back another 100 feet in all directions. Just saying….

BMac had is surgery today. The results of dye-MRI prompted them to go ahead with the surgery, which is to be confined to the posterior part of the shoulder. That’s significant, because surgery on the front side requires a much longer recovery. Obviously, they do not know exactly how long he’ll be out, but there is a feeling that he could be ready by the beginning of the season, if not shortly thereafter.

One of the objectives of the surgery will be to “tighten” up the socket. It was revealed today that Mac had been dealing with multiple subluxations (partial dislocations) of his shoulder throughout the past season.

They kept that quiet pretty dang well, huh?
