#127: A Farewell To Arms

by Gil Elliott 'Gil from Mechanicsville'

by Gil Elliott

So, in the past thirty days or so we have seen the number of healthy arms expected to fill out the Braves pitching staff diminish as fast as a spendthrift’s bank account. To be honest, I have not seen the Braves’ expected starting five so decimated since that fateful season of 2008. Y’all remember that don’t you? The year of Buddy Carlyle. Jorge Campillio, Chuck James and JoJo Reyes which led the Braves to go all in on Derek Lowe and Kenshin Kawakami in 2009. It was during the Braves attempt to stay relevant and rebuild on the fly.

InsertThe projected starting five this season was sketchy to begin with. The Braves were counting on three pitchers who were rebounding from Tommy John surgery to lead the charge. “They” being Kris Medlen, Brandon Beachy and off season acquisition Gavin Floyd. To my way of thinking it was a bit like drawing to an inside straight to cover a pretty large raise. It isn’t impossible but the odds are against you. Those odds reared it’s ugly head and bite the Braves in the butt when within 24 hours both Medlen and Beachy went down to arm trouble. Throw in Mike Minor’s inhibited return to full strength to a somewhat odd necessity to have surgery to his urethra in January and subsequently causing him to strain his shoulder in trying make up for lost time.

What the Braves were left with was going from an embarrassment of riches in the pitching department to an embarrassment of a pitching staff. Guys like journeyman Freddie Garcia moving from a guy who was trying to pitch his way onto the Braves major league roster as a fifth starter/long relief guy to now the number three guy on your staff. That is scary.

Santana

Santana

Fortunately, the best free agent starter still available, Ervin Santana was still mulling over offers from American League clubs, Toronto and Baltimore. Now, let’s be realistic, Erwin Santana is no Clayton Kershaw. In fact, he may not even be a Kris Medlen when it comes to talent but he is certainly a huge improvement over what the Braves were looking at before inking a one year deal with the 31 year old righty from the Dominican Republic for the amount of $14.1 million dollars. This is in essence the same amount of the qualifying offer he turned down from the Kansas City Royals.

Given the circumstances, the Braves got off cheap. Yes, they have increased their payroll beyond their budgeted amount and gave up a first round draft pick, They got off a heck of lot cheaper than if they had to make a trade for a front line starter. Didn’t the Braves just trade a first round pick, Sean Gilmartin, for a pitcher? There is no guarantee a first round pick is ever going to make it to the show. My take is the Braves view not just the cost of adding a guy like Santana but the potential loss of revenue that comes with a losing team. I have said many times, the Braves spend what they choose to spend. Their self imposed salary cap is just that, self imposed. I’m not saying they should spend like the federal government but they have to be realistic if they want to stay relevant.

    ALERT:

Beachy is now also scheduled to see Dr. Andrews on Monday. Apparently he did have an MRI done, and the results were not good.

Man does that ever add greater significance to the acquisition of Santana!

So… as of today (because we know how unstable these things are), here is the starting 4 for the first time or two through the rotation:

    1- Julio Teheran
    2- Alex Wood
    3- Freddy Garcia
    4- David Hale

Santana might make it back for the 2nd turn, but it’s not certain. Then…

    1- Teheran
    2- Wood
    3- Garcia
4*- Ervin Santana (in some spot within the above 4)
    5- Hale

Once Minor makes it back, sometime in early May) we’ll have:

    1- Teheran
    2- Wood
    3- Garcia
    4- Santana
    5- Mike Minor

In terms of a “pecking order”, it should be a rotation of:

    1- Teheran
    2- Santana
    3- Minor
    4- Wood
    5- Garcia

Assuming Gavin Floyd returns effectively in late May or early June, 1 of 2 things will happen:

    1) Wood will have been too good to move from the rotation, and it will look like:

    1- Teheran
    2- Santana
    3- Minor
    4- Wood
    5- Floyd

or 2) Garcia will be good enough to allow Frank and Fredi to curb Wood’s innings, thus shifting him tot he bullpen. Then the rotation will be:

    1- Teheran
    2- Santana
    3- Minor
    4- Gracia
    5- Floyd

I have to think that as long as we can have Teheran, Santana and Minor as the Top 3, and that they are healthy and making their starts, we’ll be OK. Depth has certainly taken a huge hit. The trade deadline ought to be interesting this year…

The Braves’ nation best hope for a quick coming of age for the youngsters. It really blows for Beachy to need a secong TJ surgery. It is a little like Mike Hampton syndrome minus the steroids…

Like I said, the Braves need to employ Leo as a special consultant on pitcher conditioning.

I stated on the previous blog that the Braves’ best hope needs to be able to stay relavant until June. Perhaps if the offense can show up every game, the pressuer on the pitching staff won’t be so great.

Of course, then you will have games like yesterday’s match up with the Cards where it was a K fest for Lynn….

I was thinking the same thing Rasins, it also explains why they signed Domit… At least makes even more sense.

Catching is rough on your knees to begin with, I hope the doc did a really good job. It might also explain why Evan’s timing appears to be a little off this spring.

David Hale pitched a nice game today.

Next week will be a lot more telling as the regulars will be playing more.

Terdo making a push to get on the traveling squad too…

Uggla finished 2-2 with a HR, a 3B and 3 RBI before giving way to Tommy La Stella. Braves also got 2B’s out of Pena, Gattis and Constanza. CJohnson had the other RBI. The Braves managed 8 hits in their 5 innings.

The Braves have a terrible record against Milwaulkie for the past several seasons. Maybe they can turn it around early. I’m still angling for somepne to go with me to DC on Sunday the 6th of April. Josie refuses to go to Washington and my brother will be in the middle of tax season… SIGH!

Even the Caribbean is badly tainted now. Non-natives are kidnapped, some never to be seen again. Factions fighting. Poverty. Disease. However, if you stay on the north or northwestern side of the mountains, it shouldn’t be too bad storm-wise. Most of the damage is on the opposite.

I guess I’ll stay right where I am. Everywhere I’ve lived or spent any time doesn’t really appeal to me that much. All have pros and cons. Just don’t have the incentive to sell – or TRY to sell – pack everything and move.

Thanks for keeping an eye out for my mat! As hard as the wind has been blowing lately, it may be up in New Jersey by now. 😆

I like it CL, kind of fun trying to identify all the former players.

Well, we got an answer on the eagles I mentioned in earlier post, they are busy building a nest on the southern edge of our property line about 100 feet away from the house in the top of a very tall pine tree. Josie spotted them and their nest constrution yesterday afternoon.

I will try to get some pictures in a couple of weeks after they finish their nest. I don’t want to spook them with too much activity. I guess I won’t have to worry about anyone building on the plot adjectent to me for a while…

Braves’ offense fails to score yesterday. that is troubling. I am not concerned about Hale, after all, he is still a pup.

Yes VOX, odd the ligiment to come from his pitching wrist. Pehaps we will get an explination going forward.

Nah… I’m not concerned with yesterday’s 7-6 loss. 2 runs were given up by some dude named David Bromberg, wearing #77, on a walk and 3 hits in just 2/3 of the 5th inning, and 3 were given up by a cat named Eric Pfisterer, wearing #97, on a walk and 2 hits in 2/3 of an inning in the 9th. I consider myself fairly well versed on our roster, including our minor-leaguers. I’ve never heard of either of these fellas. Honestly, I don’t expect to ever see either of them with a different uni number. Ever.

Hopefully with hometown announcers. Yesterday’s Mets love-fest almost made me puke. Probably why I didn’t pay too much attention to it. When the guy went on and on about how Gattis “got off to a hot start last year until the league figured out how to get him out” and that he would “swing at everything, so no pitcher would throw him strikes”, he lost all credibility with me. He obviously didn’t watch much Braves baseball, and didn’t do much homework prior to the game. Lazy journalism, and low hanging fruit. Yes, Gattis was hotter at the start of the season. He also was a rookie who had played winter ball and got tired as the summer wore on. But to assert that the “league figured him out” and to imply that he is not a good hitter is just flat wrong. He’ll never win a batting title, but he will always make a pitcher nervous. He can be a game changer. And his swing is so simple that he won’t be slump-prone. Grip it and rip it. I can’t wait for Gattis to blast a few over that rotten apple in that dung heap known as New York City.

Yes they did. Neither Gattis nor Uggla was in the game, but they took their shots anyway. And it ticked me off too, Mrs. Josie. Aside from the fact it was pretty over-the-top, I really didn’t see that it added anything to their “analysis” of the game. It’s been said many times over the years, but we are very blessed with our announcers… the best in the biz IMO.

Good for your lawn. mine is still brown except for an occasional wild onion sprout. I’m not worried though, the dandy lions should be along sone to add to the greenery…

NO RESPECT. I watched MLB Tonight yesterday to catch up on the Braves win over the Mets and they skiped over them even after they were showing on the scroll… Not cool guys!

Good day at the plate for Fab Five, Same for the Upton Brothers. If they can just keep it up while I have to say, both Uggla and BJ hay appeared to have found their old selves. Amazing what failure can do to you.

They are brocasting the game on the MLB network tonight so I should get a glimps of the game.

The one guy not coming out of sprinf traing red hot this year is Evan Gattis. Should we be worried?

I also hope he really mashes for for at least the first half of the season. He’s the guy I can see traded at the deadline for a stud pitcher. Low contract number; under team control for the near future; perfect DH model (as long as he’s hitting). And with Laird, Doumit and Bethancourt in the fold, it’s a position of depth. Speaking of C depth, don’t forget about the recent Cuban signee Yenier Bello. This cat’s not a youngster who’s gonna be working his way up from Low A. He’ll likely start out in AA Pearl, but only because Bethancourt will begin at AAA Gwinnett.

Don’t get me wrong… I love El Oso Blanco. But here’s how I read it. He’s a hard working warrior who scrapped and clawed his way through the Venezuelan Winter Leagues to turn a bunch of heads, and then worked his way onto the big league roster. Then all he did was produce in some high pressure situations. He is the epitome of “lightning in a bottle”. The biggest question is: how long will the lightning keep striking? I get a sense (especially with the Bello signing), that the Braves feel the same way. I have a ton of confidence in Gattis right now. I may not in 2 months. I just hope he keeps banging until we need him as a valuable trade chip.

Let’s be honest… he has DH written all over him.

Unless there is another move afoot, that makes our starting rotation (4 deep) for the 1st couple of weeks:

    3- David Hale
    4- Gus Schlosser

I guess that Frank thinks Gus can give us 2 good starts until Minor is ready to join the rotation. And it also means he thinks Hale can do the job until Floyd arrives in late April/early May.

But my concern is in the bullpen, where we need a good long man. We also are lacking a veteran presence. I guess Floyd is that, but it sure makes me nervous. I suppose when they committed $14M to Santana, it sealed the deal for the $1.7M Freddy would have been due if he made the Opening Day roster. You know… save a “mill” here, save a “mill” there… 🙄

Well, I’d rather have Santana than Garcia, but I am a little sketchy about having a starting rotation with 60-something ML starts COMBINED.

Gotta be a veteran pitcher coming in via trade, right? This makes no sense to me. I just can’t see them pinching down on $1.7M after proving with the Santana signing that they want to win now.

I am not too worried about the Braves going with potential vs “experience”. I can remeber quite a few teams doing really well with some pretty young pitching staffs. The Giants, the Atlhetics, the Tigers, the Rockies, the Pirates…. I think the real key is you cannot expect a staff full of youngsters to last 162 games but you can expect them to carry you for a couple of month early in a season.

The Braves have three pitchers who should be ready by mid May or sooner, Mike Minor, Ervin Santana and Gavin Floyd. I can see why the Braves chose not to sign Garcia for what equates to a couple of months for 1.7 mil. They would rather use that money at the trade deadline one would think.

Sure, the kids are going to have some “nerves” but this is a better time for them than September. Garcia will catch on somewhere. There are always teams that need a guy like him who is relativly cheap.

I think the Braves are pretty well positioned on the pitching front, Just get thru the first month and the calveray will begin to arrive. I am more worried about Valvero and Garrin leaking runs like a seive than Gus or Woods giving up 5 runs in the first. They don’t have to be perfect, just keep the team in the game and waits for the three run homers….

I remember the Braves having a couple of former All-Star pitchers on their staff a few years back, Tommy Hansen and Jair Jurrjens, That didn’t work out so well did it?

The Giants have a solid club and I hope they can keep the Dodgers from running away with it but Huddy ain’t waht he use to be and neither is The Freak. Funny thing about pitchers, You either get there using chemicals, ALA Roger Roid or you are the chemistry ALA Greg Madddux.

My hope is the Braves can figure out how to pitch effectivly at 80% like Glavin did for all those many years. If you have to pitch at maximum effort to hit 91mph on the radar gun, your career is going to be pretty short lived.

Drive for show, putt for dough. true in golf, true in pitching. You have to know how to pitch, not just throw if you plan to last more than a season or two.

Not sure I can afford the ones I want and the ones I can are no better than the ones I have…. See, baseball is just lie real life.

True story, I once bought a 1981 Caddilac ElDorado. Beautiful car. Black with a red pin stripe, red leather interior. It possibly was the prettiest car I ever owned but what a money pit it was…. I still remember the words of my mechanic when I had both of the front CV joints replaced. He said “son, this is not a poor man’s car but it will turn you into one”..

It was then I learned the question is not if you can afford to buy a car, it’s can you afford to own it.

That means he’s even more behind than the gimps already trying to get ready for mid to late April. No… if the Braves are going to pick up another veteran starter, it has to be through trade.

Oh, and for the record, the Braves 40-man roster – currently full at 40 – is not an issue. Both Medlen and Beachy are on the 15-day DL, which counts against the 40-man. One or both could simply be moved to the 60-day DL to open up a spot, if needed.

Actually, he had a pretty good spring (better than Garcia) and was informed he was not going to be in Cleveland’s rotation. He had a provision that allowed him to opt out of his contract with Cleveland so he did. When he became available, Frank snapped him up. Also, it was not clearly reported that yesterday at 1pm was the deadline in Freddy’s contract for the Braves to guarantee him a major league roster spot. I guess they didn’t want too do that…

  108. 112 Vox O'Raison March 25, 2014 at 8:07 am

To paraphrase the news piece, Freddy’s fastball had dropped consistently to the mid-80’s, and his changeup was not that big a change. He wasn’t keeping batters off balance and had been hit hard pretty much all spring to a 4.76 ERA. Harang’s spring ERA is below 2.00 and scouts say he is throwing great.

Those are the reasons given by the Braves. I’m sure there are other measurables that might not paint as glaring a difference, but in the end, I suppose they don’t really matter. They simply felt Harang was a better fit at this stage of their respective careers than Garcia. I suppose I can go with that.

I’m much more concerned with David Hale giving up 12 H, 6 R, 2 BB, and 2 wild pitches in 5 1/3 innings with just 60 strikes in 94 pitches last night.

Then again, we really only need Hale for the 1st couple times through the rotation.

I heard this yesterday, and it made me stop and ponder…

How many teams would like a rotation of Santana, Medlen, Beachy, Minor and Floyd? That sounds like a pretty dang good rotation, doesn’t it? All Braves, all on the DL when the season starts.

By all accounts, Floyd is ahead of schedule, and Minor is on schedule. Both should be in Atlanta by late April/early May. Frank hinted yesterday that Santana might only miss 1 turn through the rotation, 2 at most.

So fairly quickly, we ought to have Teheran, Santana, Minor, Floyd and Wood/Harang. Thats not too shabby.

As to the mystery LH throwing at Disney yesterday, it was veteran FA LHRP Luis Perez. He had a big year for Toronto in 2012 but missed 2013 with TJ. He was granted a workout in Disney yesterday, but was not signed as far as I can tell. There is a LHRP spot open in our pen currently being battled for by Ian Thomas and Atahualpo Severino. From what I’ve seen of Thomas thus far, he looks like he could be this year’s version of David Carpenter, just from the left side.

I have to believe that given the timing of yesterday’s events, Harang and Frank probably had a conversation prior to Harang opting out of his Cleveland deal… especially given that Cleveland trains in ARI and Harang got to FLA pretty quickly. Harang probably gauged the interest, got an understanding, then opted out of his deal and headed to FLA to sign a deal.

As Gil and I both said yesterday, neither is going to vie for a Cy Young. Neither is going to make or break a season. But given the choice between the 2, I’d choose Harang.

I heard the best explanation of the “Garcia for Harang” swap this morning…

Garcia, 37, was not willing to go to the minors, Garcia had lost velocity, Garcia could not loosen up quickly enough for the pen, and Garcia would not be able to pitch 2-3 times a week in relief. Harang, 35, is willing to go to the minors, Harang is still throwing in the low 90’s, Harang can come out of the pen.

Harang is younger, more versatile, and cheaper. So why not?

And now that we are inside a week to Opening Day, and most of the roster questions have been answered, I am posting my final prediction for the Opening Day 25:

    Starting lineup:
    1- JHey, RF (L)
    2- BJ, CF (R)
    3- Freddie, 1B (L)
    4- JUp, LF (R)
    5- Gattis, C (R)
    6- CJ, 3B (R)
    7- Danny, 2B (R)
    8- Simba, SS (R)

    Rotation:
    (9) Teheran, RH
    (10) Wood, LH
    (11) Hale, RH
    (12) Aaron Harang, RH

    Bullpen:
    (13) Kimbrell, RH closer
    (14) Avilan, LH setup
    (15) Carpenter, RH setup
    (16) Walden, RH
    (17) Varvaro, RH
    (18) Gearrin, RH
    (19) Ian Thomas, LH **
    (20) Gus Schlosser, RH long relief

    Bench:
    (21) Laird, C (R)
    (22) Doumit, OF/1B/C (S)
    (23) Schafer, OF (L)
    (24) Pena, IF utility (S)
    (25) Pastor, 2B/SS/OF (R)

**I will qualify this one by saying that Frank will be scouring the wire closely over the next 6 days for bullpen help. I get the sense that he’d greatly prefer a veteran LHRP over rookie Ian Thomas (or Atahualpo Severino).

By the first week or so of May, I figure Santana will join the rotation and send Gearrin to the waiver wire. Then Minor will join in and send Harang to the pen and Schlosser to Gwinnett. And once Floyd comes on the scene, Hale’s off to Gwinnett.

So the core for the rest of the season should be:

    Starting lineup:
    1- JHey, RF (L)
    2- BJ, CF (R)
    3- Freddie, 1B (L)
    4- JUp, LF (R)
    5- Gattis, C (R)
    6- CJ, 3B (R)
    7- Danny, 2B (R)
    8- Simba, SS (R)

    Rotation:
    (9) Teheran, RH
    (10) Wood, LH
    (11) Santana, RH
    (12) Minor, LH
    (13) Floyd, RH

    Bullpen:
    (14) Kimbrell, RH closer
    (15) Avilan, LH setup
    (16) Carpenter, RH setup
    (17) Walden, RH
    (18) Varvaro, RH
    (19) Thomas, LH **
    (20) Harang, RH long relief

    Bench:
    (21) Laird, C (R)
    (22) Doumit, OF/1B/C (S)
    (23) Schafer, OF (L)
    (24) Pena, IF utility (S)
    (25) Pastor, 2B/SS/OF (R)

Harang….he pitched super swell for the Indians…over 9 innings.

‘Tis true, but it’s a bit misleading. He pitched 9 innings in the ML games, but also started a couple of minor league games. According to the ajc report, he pitched in 4 ML games, 2 out of the pen and 2 as a starter, the last start being this past Friday when he went 6 innings plus a 7th simulated inning in the bullpen afterward. So he looks to be stretched out and ready to go. With the Indians having their starting 5 set, it was hard for Harang to get starter innings, thus the occasional minor league game.

I think Gearrin is really barely hanging on anyway. His best chance of making the bigs is simply his lack of options. He hasn’t been spectacular, and doesn’t really blow anyone away. I think he’s a great guy, but not a great pitcher. As far as his making the club, I’d rather see a guy like Hale take his bullpen spot. I’m not sure that Hale can benefit any more from the minors. Schlosser, on the other hand, could. I wouldn’t mind seeing Hale take on the role that Medlen filled when he came back from his 1st surgery.

According to both Bowman and Mr. O’B, Fredi has tipped his hand on his preferred batting order. It is:

    1- JHey, RF (L)
    2- BJ, CF (R)
    3- Freddie, 1B (L)
    4- CJ, 3B (R)
    5- JUp, LF (R)
    6- Danny, 2B (R)
    7- Gattis, C (R)
    8- Simba, SS (R)

Of course, the way Fredi likes to mix it up, it may not even make it to Milwaukee this way. 🙂

I have to say, that is not a bad line-up. Takes a lot of pressure off Gattis batting down in the order. Danny is showing great improvement as is BJ and we all know what J-Hey and Fab 5 Freddie can do so who is the weal link? I’d say Evan at this point.

Evan did not get a a lot of reps this spring. I am not sure how that factors in as far as expectations and to be honest, I have not seen Evan take an at-bat the entire spring. You guys who have, feel free to chime in. I have seen Uggla and he looks very good, same for BJ, Not every hard hit ball has resulted in a hit but he is making solid contact. That is so far and above where he was last season.

There will be games the Braves will be no hit this season but lots more when they will put up big numbers.

I had to laugh at the statement made by one of the ESPU annoucers saying the era of the three run homer is over. That’s like telling the Russians the Cold War is over. They just reloaded…. Because the USA is benevolent, they did not have to fear us taking advantage of that fact. No, we helped them rebuild by showing them how to extract oil and natural gas….

So, back to baseball, It is really going to be on how well the pitching staff can come together. I think we won’t really know the answere for that until June…

Okay guys, what happened overnight while I was sleeping? Did the tooth fairy leave a new reliver under Frank Wren’s pillow or did the dreaded elbow monster strike down another arm?

Was reading on another blog, the Braves needed another left handed bat for the bench, my question is, where do you put him and how do you fit him on the roster?

It would be great if MLB would expand the rosters to 30 guys for the first couple of months but then, their would be no one to shine at the minor league level. Open one door and another problem walks in..

I’m thinking that one reason so many pitchers are suffering fron UCL tears is they are throwing with max effort all the time. We have become so enamered by the 98mph fast ball we forget how impressive Greg maddux was throwing 89 to 91. It ain’t all about speed but that what gets you face time on ESPU! BLEH!

I am so remided of the joke about the gorilla who hit every shot 400 yards…. Got to have a little finess, that is what made Medlen so effective. Of course, I still think guys are trying to come back too soon. Give them a full 18 months to recover. ..

IMO, the problem starts way before they are even shaving. Used to be, a kid played baseball during baseball season, and other sports during their respective seasons. Nowadays, baseball kids play baseball year round. and pitchers pitch year round. There is no recovery time for the arm. And there is no other sport to strengthen other areas. It’s concentrated stresses over a long period of time. Take it back to when these one sport specialties began, roll it forward to the kids’ entering college/pro levels, and you’ll see the pattern.

Only 1 real roster question left as Los Barves wrap up another Spring campaign, and that’s who will be the last guy in the ‘pen. It looks like Ian Thomas locked down the LHRP spot with yesterday’s timely performance, but Gearrin lost his with a bum elbow. So who takes that 8th (and short-lived until Santana arrives and they go to 5 starters) bullpen spot is still up for grabs. There is also the question of which of Hale/Schlosser starts and which goes to long relief. Again, it’s not a big deal, and neither are may to remain with the big club when Minor and Floyd join in the fun. I suppose that all depends on how they as well as Harang pitch in April.

Francoeur’s is the quintessential story of how listening to your own ego can lead you to do and say things which effect your entire life in a negative way.

All he had to do was accept his assignment in the minors with a go attitude and likely he would be a Brave today but he had to cop an attitude and bought himself a one way ticket to polukaville.

Last ST game, finally… The Braves have wised up about their exhibition games too. It will be a sellout with SRO at Rome vs a stadium full of empty seats in Atlanta. Still, a lot of guys will be excused from playing but the folks in Rome won’t care.

So, after all the stressing about getting someone to go with me to DC, the long range weather forecast does not bode well, Rain on Friday and very cool temps on Saturday and Sunday. Folks, I just can’t do cold anymore. Heck, I can’t do heat either but it has been so long since I have had to deal with the latter that I might well give it a go. The heat that is.

And lastly, I think Josie and I are going to finally part with her Trans Am convertible. It is a shame for it to just sit and pretty stupid for us to pay the up keep and taxes etc on something I can no longer drive and Jo no longer wants to ride in with the top down.

My first car was a rag top so it is the end of an era for me. Two vehicles I have always owned were a convertible and a pick-up truck. SIGH…

I am glad Evan has decided to move on, like he said, his is a great story but time to put that behind him and move on. I think he will not have quite the same success at the plate this season but will grow as a defensive backstop and game caller.

He still has a lot to learn about the catching position but that is why he needs to be able to communicate with his bench and why Fredi G needs to be able to coach him even to the point of leaning heavily on Eddie Perez as Evan’s personal mentor. Just saying….

All that said, Evan is still hitting the ball hard when he makes contact but I think his timing is a bit off. He came into last season because of a hot bat. This season not so much but the Braves have made their bed so Dan will have to carrry a bigger load and from what I have seen, read and heard, he is ready to do just that…. WOO HOO!

What’s not cool? the AJC…am I missing something, or is it officially useless unless you pay to join up? I thought a few months back, it was 50/50 on stories free and behind the pay portion. Today, wondering when the first game started…saw nothing there telling me that, and only one story(Sadly, Gerrin(sp) likely needs TJ surgery) I could actually read, and no links even mentioning the first game!!! So, a google search showed me it was at 2:10 on the 31st.
Continuing to be negative….March 31st, Milwaukee…that’s brilliant! And 3 straight games so if there is snow….you play a game on the day out of town….

Not to fret Ber, Milwaukee has a domed stadium…. or what passes for a domed stadium. They will have the roof closed anyway.

They are calling for rain next Friday in DC so that game will be iffy. Depending on the weather, I am planning to attend the Sunday game but not if it is chilly. Not worth it.

You have to hunt and search for the free content on the AJC site. A lot of formerly free sites aren’t any longer. You might just read Bowman’s site. Pretty much the same news as the AJC without the music lyrics.

Hi guys, I must remember not to read the comments of the nattering nabobs of negativity who continue to espouse an “oh woe is us” line concering the Braves potential for the upcoming season. Not one meaningful game yet played and yet, according to the expert bloggers, the Braves may as well roll over and the fans can all stay home because the Braves will be lucky if they win 50 games this season…. Bull S***… I say… Sure, there will be some bumps but hey, it is not even April, let’s get real. It only takes a couple of 10 game winning streaks to turn things on theur head.

I am being good today… I strongly considered going to an auction today to spend some money I don’t have on something I don’t need…. SIGH! I am my father’s son…. Must be strong! SO, going to stay home and watch the NASCAR race and root for Denny Hamlin….

VOX, thanks for the heads up on the starting 2:30 PM time for tomorrow’s game. I have no clue as to what I was thinking on why the game would be at night.

More on Gearrin… I wonder if they have to pay him (insurance) at minor league pay rates? Still, no matter, it has to really blow to join the walking wounded who are filling up the MASH unit in Atlanta…. You do realize the Braves have enought pitchers on the DL to fill their own wing (bad pun) of a VA ward?
