166: CL Asks, “Why 3rd? Why Now?”

CL, basically because there is a small , unique window to try this.

adonisgarcia-e1498177403935.jpg

Adonis Garcia

Adonis Garcia is hurt and is not a long term solution at 3rd

RioRuiz

Rio Ruiz

base. Rio Ruiz started hot then cooled off quite a bit. He doesn’t look to be, as of June 2017, the long term guy there. So there is little risk of blocking someone in the system at 3rd right now.

MattAdams

Matt Adams

As much as I was a cheerleader for Matt Adams over James Loney, I had no clue he would do this well!  No one did.  I was hoping for 4 or 5 HRs, 10-15 RBIs, and a .260 BA in his first month here.  Instead, in 30 games as a brave, he has 11HRs and 29 RBIs with a .294 BA.  To put that in perspective, in 37 games, FF had 14 HRs (which lead the league when he was injured, and still lead the league for about a week after he was on the DL), 25 RBIs and a .342 BA.  Matt Kemp, in 60 games, has 12 HRs, 35 RBIs, and a .320 BA.

I don’t know if hitting coach Kevin Seitzer saw a flaw in his swing or if Matt Adams, having a chance to relax and know he was going to play everyday for two months unless he was flat out terrible, helped his timing and/or confidence, or what…but something has clicked…for a month at least.

MattKemp

Matt Kemp

Markakis

Nick Markakis

Braves could trade Nick M and move Kemp to right, and Adams in left, but that would more than likely give us 2 subpar outfielders and a very tired CF’er.

FFreeman

Freddie Freeman

So, with basically nothing to lose, it sounds like F.F. talked the braves into giving him a shot at 3rd.  If he makes an error a night, well, Matt Adams has to be traded. If he can be a league average guy or better (and guys like F.F. try harder and work harder than regular guys, which is why he’s a superstar) and if Matt can settle into being a .270 hitter who could hit 25-30 HR’s a year, drive in 90…then the braves have a much more dangerous lineup from here on out.
Also, that would be one less hole to plug as there are few 3rd basemen out there and, though there are several teams that can/will get the guy you want, if you don’t get someone who’s better than Garcia or Ruiz…then you have to play Garcia and Ruiz.

JonathanLucroy

Jonathan Lucroy

Plus there would be more moola to spend on a catcher like the Rangers Jonathan Lucroy (who, by the by, is going to be 32 next year and only has 4 HRs and 19 RBIs) or the braves will have more prospects to use to get a catching prospect or an ace (or a #2 like Archer that Coppy has a man-crush on) and to perhaps upgrade right field production from Nick M.  (I really like the guy, think he’s very good, but he doesn’t have much pop, and you need some pop from your right fielder if you want to compete with the Nats… and unlike other players, isn’t getting any younger 🙄 )

So much can go wrong, either guy can get hurt and make it a moot point, but a comment I saw about the move made a good point I hadn’t thought of:  if FF is ok at 3rd and Matt hits ok from here to the trading deadline, then the braves will look less like a team that has to trade Matt Adams.  They would still have that option but he won’t be sitting on the bench rotting once F.F. is back.

    nice work Ber!

It’s an interesting situation. Nobody (except Adams mother and father) expected him to mash the way he has so hats off to Braves brass for stealing him away from the Cards

His massive output though has created another problem. What to do with him when Freddie comes back? A trade is certainly still an option. Adams has certainly improved his value in the last month or so. The Yankees need an upgrade at first. Can you imagine Adams with that short right field wall in the Bronx? Maybe they have a long-term solution for third base to flip for Adams? Maybe this thing with Freddie at third is just an opportunity for Adams to extend his audition before being traded again?

While a trade seems to ME to be the most logical it apparently doesn’t to Braves brass, at least not just yet. I read that a move to third base was actually FF’s idea! While I have some reservations about that I do appreciate his team-first attitude. Remember when Chipper ceded third to Vinny Castilla and moved to left?

Here’s what worries me about FF moving to third. There is a reason, and a very good reason, that you rarely (meaning almost never ever ever) see a left handed third baseman or shortstop. When a lefty infielder fields a ball hit to his right it is much more difficult to turn your body and set your feet to throw back across to first or second. Not just that, but FF hasn’t played third regularly since HIGH school! With all due respect to him, this team already commits enough errors!

According to my research, the last time there was a regular left-handed third baseman was 1889. Let me say that again: 1889! His name was Hick Carpenter and he played mostly for Cincinnati of the American Association. Sure, there have been a handful of lefties that have played there, mostly a couple games here or there but I will reiterate, there is a reason you don’t see left-handed infielders on the left side of the infield.

Freddie will be back soon. According to reports, he’s been taking infield at third. I, for one, wish him the best of luck. As for Adams, I wish him the best too! And it’s just my personal opinion but i hope he winds up playing deep into October! If he does I don’t expect him to have a tomahawk across his chest but, of course, i’ll be happy if he does!

Hey Chris! I am really interested/excited to see what F.F. can do at 3rd. It’s outside the box thinking I like…like when Gattis started playing everywhere, even though he wasn’t an outfielder, or 1st baseman ever…and those teams were a bit more competitive than this one (though you never know wildcard wise , though closer in the NL East than the wildcard)

I wish someone would try a left hander on the infield, but FF won’t be that guy, he throws with his right arm 😉
seriously though, righties can play 3rd, 2nd, SS and as a catcher, but for some reason, you can’t do that as a Lefty…yeah, right…

righties can play 3rd, 2nd, SS and as a catcher, but for some reason, you can’t do that as a Lefty

It’s simply because of the way the body is positioned after fielding the ball. Because the basepath is counterclockwise, the fielders need to similarly be “counterclockwise” in their movements. To have a lefty in the infield would result in him continuously throwing against his natural movement. It’s a completely inefficient motion that would always rob the fielder of a split second in release that would often be the difference between out and safe.

Quite honestly, I think Freddie can probably pull it off for a month or so. I think he’s plenty athletic enough to play the position. I don’t think he’ll be a major league caliber third baseman though.

I completely understand his thinking. I mean… all Matt Adams does is continue to mash, including another HR last night. But as I’ve said, and as Clobber said above, that’s when you turn a surplus asset – and in this case a red hot surplus asset – into something to fill a need.

This is my opinion on the whole topic:

I don’t think the club would have ever approached Freddie with the idea. I believe that it was Freddie’s idea from the beginning. And I think they probably had some long discussions, including Ron Washington and Terry Pendleton, to decide if it is even worth the try. Those are the guys that are working with him, and they are probably the guys who will decide if/when to pull the plug. And you can bet your mortgage that he’ll get an extended look at the position in a minor league rehab assignment before they’d ever let him get an inning at the major league level. He’s going to have to prove himself. And I suppose if he can pull that off, then so be it. (But I still don’t like it.)

There is a school of thought out there that Matt Adams’ trade market is narrow right now (which it certainly is). That if the right offer came in, they’d certainly make the deal. But the market will open up much wider in the offseason, and that’s when they would be able to make the best deal that would have the most benefit. And while that’s probably true, I think your’re playing with fire for a couple of months in the meantime.

I just hope CLE or HOU or TEX steps in right now and offers something we want. In case nobody has picked up on this, I don’t want to see Freddie take the field at the hot corner.

Must have been a heck of an updraft with so many balls flying out of the park last night…

Okay, here is an interesting conundrum for Coppy and the Braves. What kind of message does it send a team which clearly thinks it has a shot (hey, you gotta believe, right?) to trade a guy who was supposed to be a temp but you have your franchise player who is willing to change his position in mid season to accommodate his staying in the line-up?

I think we, and the Braves, feel that several of their players are clearly expendable with cheap young prospects waiting in the wings. Markakis, Phillips, any of their “old” pitchers are clearly available for the right offer but with the team approaching the magical .500 plateau, do you really shake things up?

Things could get very interesting for the Braves as they near the All-star break. With Freddie Free and Garcia getting nearer to returning, you have to be glad Camago, Lane Adams and Jace Peterson have options. Danny Santana does not and would not clear waivers.

I don’t see the Braves giving Dat Dude away this season. They will want something in return for him given his affordability. Danny Santana has rehabilitated himself nicely and could be packaged to make room on the roster, otherwise, he is here for the duration. I would expect him to be in left field for tonight’s tilt against the Brew Crew.

Okay dokie… Looking at the up coming scheduled, The Braves have a pretty tough stretch staring them in the face. The Brew Crew rolls in for the weekend then the Los Bravos head west for away games with the Padres and Athletics. Then the moment of truth arrives, series with the Cubs, the Astros, the gNats, the D’backs and Dodgers will tell the tale. Staying at .500 during the month of July will tell the tale of this season.

So here is how the Braves draft pick bonuses are broken down…

    The top 4:
Kyle Wright, RHP, Vanderbilt, Junior, $7,000,000
Drew Waters, OF, Etowah HS (GA), $1,500,000
Freddy Tarnok, RHP, Riverview HS (FL), $1,445,000
Troy Bacon, RHP, Santa Fe CC, $400,000

    College seniors 5-10:
Bruce Zimmerman, LHP, University of Mount Olive, $10,000
Jordan Rodgers, 3B, Tennessee, Signed, $5,000
Landon Hughes, RHP, Georgia Southern, Signed, $1,000
John Curtis, LHP, Lenoir-Rhyne University, $5,000
Riley Delgado, SS, Middle Tennessee State, $1,000
Jacob Belinda, RHP, Lock Haven University, $5,000

    And #11 must be mentioned:
Drew Lugbauer, C, University of Michigan, Signed, $125,100
… $100 of his, because it exceeds $125,000, goes toward the limit.

Our total pool started out as $9,881,200.
Our total, plus the 5% overage threshold was $10,375,260.
    Our total used was $10,372,100.
    The total leftover was $3,160.

    That’s management.

Drew Lugbauer, the catcher the Braves drafted in the 11th round out of University of Michigan, was one of the first guys to sign and was immediately assigned to the short season Danville Braves. He’s apparently likes getting paid to play baseball as he’s slashing a whopping .417/.500/1.250 with 3 HR’s and 8 RBI since signing on 6/20. The Braves are playing the 20-year-old at more than just catcher, as he’s played 1 game at 3B, and reportedly will also be tried elsewhere to “see where he’s comfortable” although they hope he can stick behind the plate. Obviously the Braves drafted this kid for his bat, and he’s not disappointing thus far.

And speaking of catchers, last year’s big catching draftee, Brett Cumberland, was promoted from low-A Rome to high-A Florida this week. keep working Brett, and keep making the steps.

The real minor league story of the season thus far has to be RHP Mike Soroka. The 19-year-old continues to just dominate AA hitters, and is very likely in line for a promotion to AAA before too much longer. He’s pitching to a 2.18 ERA, with a very shiny 0.992 WHIP. He’s also averaging 7.7 K’s per 9 IP vs. just 1.9 BB’s. RH batters are batting just .161 against him. Maybe the best thing about his season is his consistency as he doesn’t have any single games that skew any of his numbers one way or the other. If one of our current major league starters gets traded and if one of our AAA pitchers is called up to take his spot, Soroka will probably fill that AAA rotation void.

I was about to say I sure hope the braves are careful with Soroka, especially after hearing the Dodgers phenom Julio Urias is now out for 12-14 months, even after babying him (justifiably I would have said before the injury)

Personally, I don’t think that’s it. I think Newk has secured a spot barring a Teheranian collapse. IMO, the only reason they have not yet announced Bart’s start is that they are doing what they did last time… making sure he looks like a major league pitcher in his side session before handing him the ball for a game that counts.

If you’ll recall, Big Sexy was uncharacteristically silent after he was scratched from that last announced start. It lead many to believe he wasn’t in agreement with management about his readiness. I think they are looking for specific improvement in his side sessions or they aren’t gonna start him.

And should he be activated, they’ll probably send down a reliever, most likely Jason Hursh.

Sadly, since they’re back out on the left coast, I probably won’t be seeing much of it anyway. Gotta get my beauty sleep and all. Plus, I turn into a pumpkin at midnight.

    Here’s an interesting tidbit…

A’s beat writer Susan Slusser noted yesterday that among the clubs with multiple executives and scouts at Sonny Gray’s last start Sunday was the Braves. Coppy was connected to him this past offseason, if you’ll recall. It’s well known that Coppy wants a young frontline pitcher that has multiple years of team control. Gray fits that profile (when he’s healthy).

BTW, in that start, Gray tossed 7 innings against the Nats, giving up 3 ER with 6 K’s and 3 BB’s.

    DO’B:

*The Braves are again interested in trading for a top-of-the-rotation caliber starting pitcher and have circled back to a couple of their targets from last winter, the Rays’ Chris Archer and White Sox left-hander Jose Quintana.

They also had scouts at Oakland’s Sonny Gray’s start Sunday, but the Braves are more interested in Archer, who is under contractual control for four more seasons including club-friendly options in 2020 ($9 million) and 2022 ($11 million), and Quintana, also under a club-friendly contract that runs through 2020 including two option years. He’ll make about $31 million in 2018-2020 assuming the options are exercised.*

The A’s, Rays and ChiSox will each want a young major league ready pitcher in return, and I hope the Braves aren’t willing to part with Newk. You can figure a young major league ready pitcher, another top pitching prospect, a lesser prospect, and maybe one more filler piece to make a deal happen. The Braves might be willing to part with LHP Max Fried, another highly regarded and highly rated prospect, who has struggled with control this season at AA after sparkling last season at high-A. LHP Luiz Gohara will probably be on other teams’ radars, too.

Mike Soroka and Kolby Allard are untouchable.

Picture this rotation -> LHP Jose Quintana, RHP Julio Teheran, RHP Folty, LHP Sean Newcomb, RHP Mike Soroka. Not too shabby.

Would you give a package of RHP Lucas Sims, LHP Luiz Gohara, and IF Travis Demeritte to make it happen? The question is simply this: How badly do we want a real ace in the rotation to lead the youngsters over the next handful of years?

I believe Coppy will be aggressive in shopping Jaime Garcia, RAD, Brandon Phillips, and Jason Motte. At the same time, I believe he will be equally aggressive in acquiring the aforementioned young frontline starter with multiple years of control. He has publicly stated recently that the Braves will “both sellers and buyers” at this year’s deadline. This could be a very busy few weeks, and a critical time for the future of this franchise.

Quintana is friends with his Colombian countryman Julio Teheran, who has struggled this season and might possibly benefit from having Quintana around.

Maybe you effectively get 2 pitchers by acquiring 1.

Reading some things across the interweb this afternoon that makes me believe that the Braves are serious about this starter thing. Archer/Gray/Quintana are the names that keep coming up.

As much as Coppy loves Archer, I think he’s the least likely acquired. He’ll cost an arm, a leg, and both kidneys.

I’ll rank them on my view of probability:
    1) Gray – 50%
    2) Quintana – 45%
    3) Archer – 5%

The Braves are one of the few teams in baseball with both the prospects and the payroll flexibility in 2018-2020 to pull off such a deal. The question remains as I asked earlier. Will Coppy be willing to part with the prospects it takes to bring one of them in?

According to those who follow the team, Bartolo’s start tonight is not a part of a long term 6-man rotation. He’ll start tonight, and then the FOT’s will huddle on Monday’s off-day to make the determination on what to do with the rotation.

    Here’s how I translate that…

Bartolo will start tonight vs. the Pads simply to see if there is anything left in the tank. In the mean time, Coppy is hammering out details on sending Jaime Garcia and/or RAD out of town.

In other words, the rotation is in a state of flux. And since Newk tossed 6 innings of shutout ball last night to earn his first ML Win, and lower his ERA to 1.48 in the process, I’d say it’s a pretty good bet he’s cemented his spot in the rotation. That curve is something else.

And on a non-pitching topic, how about that Johan Camargo, huh? There’s a player emerging seemingly out of nowhere. I like him… both as a hitter and as a fielder. I think we have something there.

    More positives from last night…

Jim Johnson and Jason Motte improved their trade values.

Would Coppy trade either or both of them? In short, yes.

Motte is a guy we got for nothing that has revived his career. It’s a typical Coppy move to send him on while his value is high. As for JJ, well… we’ve seen it before. And quite honestly he’s not in our long term plans.

Anybody notice that (future closer) AJ Minter was promoted to AA yesterday? Coincidence?

As for Mauricio Cabrera, he’s struggled badly at AAA since coming back from his early season injury. But an under-the-radar guy you probably haven’t hear of – Enrique Burgos – has been lights out since we picked him up from ARI last month. He hasn’t allowed a run in his 8 appearances as Gwinnett’s closer. We gave up only “cash considerations” for him after he was DFA’d by the Snakes on May 15, but he’s been great here. He’s a guy that could step into a late inning role in ATL.

As for replacing Jason Motte, the guy we’ll send down today to make room for Bartolo has been pitching well. Jason Hursh has shown he can hang here, and he shares the same first name with the guy he’ll replace. 😉

There is only about 5 weeks until the deadline, and historically Coppy has acted earlier than later. I don’t expect this season to be any different. I won’t be surprised to see moves in the next couple of weeks.

Speaking of young pitchers, Lucas Sims has righted the ship after hitting a mid-season bump. He struck out 11 and walked just 1 in 6 innings Monday night to follow his strong performance last week. Whatever caused his control to go wonky for a handful of starts appears to have been corrected.

Okay, tried to stay awake last night but fell asleep some time during the third inning. Appears I missed a good one.

So, “Big Sucky” gets another opportunity. I suppose the Braves owe it to themselves to give it one more shot before eating the remaining $7MM of his contract and moving on. Let’s keep our fingers crossed…

Yep. Agreed. They owe it to themselves, and in some small way, Bartolo’s career has earned him one more shot.

Perhaps tonight’s start will determine just how much salary we eat before trading him to the Angels for an unheard of minor leaguer. 😀

Speaking of relievers, hasn’t Luke Jackson been a nice pick up? As long as he isn’t run out there three days in a row, he has been pretty effective.

While I really like Jim Johnson, I am of the mind everyone in Braves country holds their collective breaths when he comes in to save a close game. Of course, unlike any of the gNats, at least he has a chance of doing so.

All he needs now is a cutter/slider/change up to keep hitters off his fastball.

Yep. No starter can live on just 2 pitches, even if one of them is as strong as Newk’s Uncle Charlie. He’s been spotting his fastball well, but what happens when he “doesn’t have his best stuff”?

His scouting report says “Newcomb has a fastball that usually is around 92-94 and has topped out at 97. He has the sneaky ability with his fastball that has a late lift and appears to arrive quicker to the batters eye. He has an 11-5 curveball and an above average slider. Also in his arsenal is a changeup that has good action and sits around the mid-80’s.”

I’ve not really seen the slider used, and I can’t recall the changeup. According to Fangraphs, his pitches break down like this in his 4 starts:

    4 seam FB: 190
    Curve: 68
    Slider: 19
    Change: 5

I would have bet his curve count would have been higher, but I would have been wrong.

At least the Braves wised up after ruining Medlin and Beachy by trying to bring them back too soon, it is what worries me about Freddie. Let the dang thing heal boy, they are not going to trade you…..

The Pades manager was complaining about a wide strike zone for Newk… Man, he never saw the zone given to the Marlins back in 67 did he? Wil Myers was a class act, said the umps are human, deal with it. He went 2 for 4 by the way. Green also whined about the homerun/non homerun hit by Myers in the first inning. I suspect the ball hit whatever wall extends to the padding and just bounced back. Kind of freaky but not the first time I have seen balls take a weird bounce.

My advice is for the Padres to paint a yellow line on the pad and say if it hits above it, it is a homer but it plays both ways…

I’m hardcore…stayed up for the whole game 😛
Newcomb…is a keeper. Just thought I would be the first to say that 😉
It was odd, it looked like he was done after 6 innings, but hit, and went out there in the 7th. 1st hitter hit a ball that rolled up BP’s arm , clearly and error, and Snit took him out….had no idea til after the game when Kelsey and Brian Jordan kept referring to it as a hit that it wasn’t called an error.

It was really odd to watch Jim Johnson throw high pitches, that Jordan after the game said were not strikes, called strikes…Joe Simpson was acting like he had a lot of movement on his pitches…no, not really…most everything was up, no power sinker…each Padres player was griping, the fans were booing….even when pitches were called strikes…funny..

But, yeah, if someone wants Johnson, trade ’em!!!

MLBTV has been getting on my nerves of late…And I don’t think it’s cuz I am biased for the braves…Honestly, I wish there was some sort of way to keep BP, (I know, Ozzie) I think he can flat out hit, and despite the defensive metrics b.s….my eyes and I am sure y’alls too can tell he still can pic ’em better than most 2nd baseman…I feel he’s a borderline HOF’er, and in the old baseball world, he wouldn’t have to jump from team to team, and fear being a “bench piece” that people want to make him. I think the Dodgers would be a good landing spot for him…

    Pt 1 from today….
Other teams beginning to explore sell-side moves, per Feinsand, are the Braves, Marlins, Mets, and Reds. Those clubs are all obvious suspects given their placement in the standings. Atlanta could be an interesting team, though, since the organization seems to be prioritizing improvement in the on-field results and doesn’t have a lot of clearly valuable trade pieces.

Yeah, who would want Nick M, BP, Garcia, Motte, or J. Johnson? (ok, he is a bit risky as a closer, but might make a great 7th, 8th inning guy)

Brandon Phillips, 2B | Salary: $1MM (remainder of $14MM salary paid by Reds)

    From June 19th…
    Taking Inventory: Atlanta Braves

Phillips carries an attractive .306/.351/.431 batting line, but that’ll drift back as his .342 BABIP faded. Since he’s no longer an elite defender, Phillips just doesn’t profile as a first-division regular. That said, he’s cheap and comes with plenty of experience, so it’s easy to imagine interest — though it’s anybody’s guess whether he’d be happy playing in a bench role.

Again, he doesn’t profile as a first division regular? how many 2nd baseman have a BA higher than .306 (as of that day) and .351 OBP???? I bet he is too stubborn to move to 3rd, but I bet the Red Sox would love to have him there. So cheap, just would have to give up a decent mid level(redundent there berigan!) prospect…

    Nick Markakis, OF | Salary: $11MM in 2017; $11MM in 2018

The veteran keeps on posting roughly league average offensive seasons, so you generally know what you’re going to get. Currently, he’s getting on base at a nice clip (.371) but showing a total lack of power (.092 isolated slugging). Unless the Braves are willing to pay down quite a bit of money, it’s hard to see rival organizations getting too excited at that profile from an older corner outfielder.

keeps on posting roughly league average offensive seasons….I bet if I were to look around, I wouldn’t find a lot of right fielders hitting .292 .368. I do know his lack of power really hurts, plus, unless some team has a RF’er get hurt between now and then, no teams really need outfielders it seems…

And then there’s Vizcaino, who may be the most likely of this group to be traded at the deadline. He’s throwing well again, with a 1.93 ERA and 10.6 K/9 against 2.9 BB/9 through 28 frames, and the Braves control him for only two more years. There’s surely no need for Atlanta to push the flamethrower out the door, but it may be worth cashing in on a somewhat volatile asset if there’s a good enough offer on the table.

This is the only thing I agree with him on…a very good arm, but you never know when he will look bad for a week or so…

Ber, the main reason for Nick’s “lack of power” is he does not see that as his role on this team. he is a contact guy and as such, does not swing for the fences. Everyone is so enamored with the home run they forget solo homers don’t often win games.

I figured if JJ is traded, Viz would assume his role as closer.

I will not be heart broken if BP remains with the Braves this season.

Add the Brewers to the growing list of teams that could come knocking on Jaime Garcia. They lost their best starter Chase Anderson last night to an oblique strain that the team fears will have him out “for an extended period”. They’re gonna have to replace him in the rotation if they want to hold onto 1st place in their division.

As for Rex Brothers, he had a handful of pretty decent years for COL between 2011-2015. His last really good year was 2013 when he notched 19 saves (in 21 chances) and had a 1.74 ERA. But control problems derailed him in 2014 and he has been trying to regain his “mojo” ever since.

The Braves signed him to a minor league deal last Feb. He has spent most of this year in AA and was promoted just last week to AAA. Today he’s back in the bigs… well technically, anyway. Not sure how close he is to San Diego.

Gil, I was feeling sorry for him last night…
    it’s sad when a player is done…has to be a helpless feeling…

I just looked at his WAR. -2.3 (really? thats all?)

the team was 5-8 in his 13 starts (with an 8.14 ERA) imagine a “league Average” guy, or say Newcomb all year, lets say team would be 8-5, and that could be conservative…
Braves would be 6.5 not 9.5 back of Nats…Nats have a serious bullpen problem…one kid now has terrible inflammation in his shoulder, and many others suck…
they could fall back if they don’t get help, and soon…
Now, not saying this team is likely to overtake the Nats, but….we could at least make it interesting …might still….just pointing out that not only did it cost the braves a lot of moola, but cost the team wins as well…
I am sure no one thought that Bart, no matter what his age was, could go from 3.43 ERA to over 8, but…how many successful pitchers have there been at 44…that didn’t throw a knuckleball?
    All right then…

Oh yes they will, and mainly because he’s so cheap with Cincy paying most of his salary, plus he’s not a long term commitment. And LAD is probably a good call as a team in need of 2B help. As for non-contenders, if DET is successful in trading Ian Kinsler in a straight salary dump, they could use a cheap replacement.

I think it’s less a case of BP having no value, and more a case of there being a pretty narrow market for 2B.

Don’t underestimate the impact of having to say “bye” to Bartolo. I imagine it was kinda weird in the clubhouse. Glad they’re on the road and moving to a new location. That’ll help.

So the Braves face OAK and Sonny Gray tonight. Perhaps Coppy can hurry up and make a deal for Gray before we have to face him. Sonny can take a couple extra nights rest and pitch on Tues. vs. HOU. That’ll bump Newk back one day into the game scheduled as Jaime’s next start, whom will hopefully be dealt away by then.

This GM thing is pretty easy…

Well, if the players cooperate it is! 😉

Garcia has made 3 bad starts in a row, after 5 good ones.
I think he was clocked at 93 at least once last night (Joe Simpson mentioned it) so, His arm isn’t the issue thank goodness. I saw one AWESOME curve make a Padres hitter look silly…but the homers came on hanging breaking pitches…
But, right now…no one is offering a ton for him… and 15 teams in the AL are probably not going to take a chance on him either….
But, he has a month to turn it around, and stay healthy…
Did anyone notice after Newcomb’s last inning, they showed Garcia , standing right in front of him, talking to him, like he was the pitching coach. Thought that was very interesting. And perhaps one reason to hold onto him, if no one is going to give you something better than Garcia in a trade….

Truth is, we don’t know what anyone is offering. One thing we do know is that lefty starters are always at a premium. As you mentioned, his velo hasn’t dropped, so there isn’t a worry about his arm.

Obviously, if he’d pitched the last 3 starts like he pitched the previous 5, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. And a dominating start last night could have served to speed things up. But he’s still a valuable commodity. I believe his market will heat up closer to the deadline when teams become a little more desperate to make acquisitions and the market begins to sort itself out. Early mid-season acquisitions are usually more targeted… such as Coppy looking for a specific long-term controllable arm.

I doubt Garcia will net any major league ready pitcher of any type. The Braves will have to trade some of their premium prospects to accomplish that. I shutter to think which ones that will entail but I’ll bet Ronald Acuna is number one on everyone’s list.

Man, sooooo close…but clearly Folty ran out of steam in the 8th, but 8 no hit innings is nothing to sneeze at..Hard to have steam when they act like 6-7 innings is enough for a starter…rested the bullpen though, which is great….

Upon further review… The real shame about Folty’s near no hitter last night was that because of the 10PM start, many Braves fans did not get to see his coming of age performance.

But for one missed call by the home plate umpire, the young righty might well indeed have hurled a no hitter. That said, what a magnificent performance. You could tell he was nervous during the top half of the ninth from his fidgeting but what the heck, will love to see him continue to grow.

Would not mind picking up Sonny Grey and taking him back to Atlanta either but he will not be cheap. The good ones never are. I just hope the Braves keep “The Answer to Everything” he is going to be a superstar…

Talk about a long steady climb…. While the Braves are still 2 games under .500, they are only 2 games under .500. Todays game will mark exactly half of the Braves 162 game schedule. They face a tough July schedule but like I said, if they can hover around .500 for the month, they have a much easier row to hoe in August and September.

Pretty exciting… of course this is exactly where the Braves were two years ago when they traded Jonny Gomes and their season fell apart. We’ll see, it all really depends on if the pitching can hold up.

The gNats are having an awful time of it right now. They still have a pretty stout team but the lack of a reliable bull pen has made them susceptible to late inning come backs. The loss of Trea Turner has not helped their cause one bit either.

I’m hoping good Julio shows up today. He has been much better on the road this season, It would be a real cause for fireworks if the Braves can come home to play the Astros with a chance of getting to .500.

While I was disappointed that Vizciano gave up a walk and a 2 run homer in the 8th inning yesterday, he still is a decent reliever. I think he was just a bit too amped up. Maybe it was the drums…. And bot, didn’t Ramirez shine in the 7th? he looked as good as I’ve seen him all year. Jim Johnson continues to amaze. he won’t be available today so let’s hope the Braves have a big lead going into the 9th.

Lost in all the chatter about Freddie Freeman’s rehab assignment at Gwinnett are the rehab assignments of 2 more Atlanta Braves.

Both Micah Johnson and Sean Rodriguez have begun their respective rehab assignments. SeanRod is aiming to return shortly after the All-Star break. This begs the question… how will they be shoehorned onto the roster?

Micah Johnson has minor league options, so he’ll likely progress up the rehab chain as slowly as possible, then be optioned to AAA Gwinnett.

But SeanRod will return to Atlanta, and need some place to land. When Freddie returns, he’ll take Lane Adams’ spot and apparently take over at 3B. So when SeanRod follows, does he bump Johan Camargo back to AAA? Actually, it might be more likely that he knocks Jace Peterson back to AAA since Camargo seems to have passed Jace on the pecking list.

And where will SeanRod play? It won’t be 3B… that’s where our All-Star 1B is supposed to take root.

To complicate matters more, when Micah and Sean are removed from their 60-day DL purgatory, each will count against the 60 man roster. Currently there’s only 1 open spot.

That math isn’t too hard to do. You can delay Micah’s return for a little while, maybe past July 31, but he’s gotta return sometime.

July 31 is significant, of course, because it’s the non-waiver trade deadline. We all expect a good deal of movement in both directions for the Braves over the next 4 weeks. Perhaps the roster spot conundrum will sort itself out.

Three fouls balls in one game… goes under the plays of the week category. Also under the heading of, something I had never seen happen before.

Okay, the Braves have had some success against some weak sisters, now it gets a bit tougher.

My prediction: Freddie returns and Lane Adams is optioned to AAA. SeanRod returns and Jace Peterson is optioned to AAA. Sean then takes the primary utility role. He also becomes the first bat off the bench.

Johan Camargo is a strong trade possibility. Alot of teams could use a guy like him, and he’s cheap for several years. He’s a likely candidate to be included in a deal for a Quintana, Gray, etc.

Danny Santana becomes the last non-catcher off the bench.

As for the roster moves, depends on how the Braves are playing, who gets hurt, who is traded. You never want to mess with “team chemistry” when you are winning.

    Nice problem to have though.

Despite all Matt Kemp’s hitting heroics, anyone think the Braves would have been in the position to win those games if Danny Santana had not been running down fly balls in left field those three games? Now that is a real conundrum folks. Danny Santana is playing like he did when he broke in with the Twins. And the Braves got him for what? Money? A steal….

While I think Jim Johnson is a very good closer when he has a couple of days rest, three days in a row are tough on the old man. His control suffers and he is forced to throw strikes. Still, his was a gutsy performance yesterday. And what of Sam Freeman? Another diamond found in the rock pile.

What exactly would it take to get a Quintana or a Gray? All trade talks will begin with the name Ozzie Albies. Does Coppy want a front line pitcher bad enough to include Ozzie?

IMHO, Coppy will not discuss Ozzie with the A’s or ChiSox, but he might with the Rays. He really covets Chris Archer. But I don’t think the Rays will trade Archer in July since they’re still in the playoff hunt themselves. They’ll probably trade him alright… just in the offseason. His market might be better then anyway, with more suitors.

One of the things we’ve seen demonstrated thus far in Coppy/Hart, etc. is their creativity. They’ve pulled more than one rabbit out of their “A” caps.

Just 29 days until the non-waiver trade deadline.

To get quality, you have to give quality, unless it is the off season, then you have to give money….

Yes, the top two names on every teams wish list will be Albies and Acuna. Meanwhile, Coppy is offering Peterson and Demerit. We know the Braves will need a front line ace, do they have a couple in waiting but do we really want to wait that long?

It will take first rate pitching prospects as well as a couple of high quality position players to pry away either Quintana or Grey.

Congratulations to Ender Inciarte for making the All-star team. I hope he has a great time there. Honestly, I am not sure how Heyward made the cut but he can play some “D”. Normally it’s all about the offense.

How long before Matt Kemp is traded to an AL team? Hey, he has been a great boost to the offense but young pitchers need guys who can catch the ball too. To be fair, he is playing hurt, that is always a factor but that is why older player can be a liability. They get hurt….

Still, that was a pretty fun series in Oakland. A little of everything.

near the bottom of this post on mlbtr, about Verlander possibly being traded to the cubs (along with backup catcher Avila) is info on 2 cubs catchers, current catcher Wilson Contreras, and switch-hitting receiver Victor Caratini , who “they” seem to say is the long term guy….

For the Cubs, young switch-hitting receiver Victor Caratini looks to be a long-term piece, but it seems the team may not quite be willing to rely on him too heavily in 2017. Second-year man Willson Contreras, the regular behind the dish, hasn’t been quite as impressive this year as last at the plate, so pursuing a quality veteran complement makes good sense.

    Contreras last year,
    .252 ABs 12 HR’s 35 RBIs …..282 .357
    228 AB’s 10 HR’s 40 RBI’s .254 .323
See how horrible those numbers are for the 25 Y.O. ???
    that’s about 20 80 over a full season…..

So, would you trade for him? He’s very athletic looking, runs decent, seems to play with passion….

Well, if you are going to go all in… why not?

Freddie Freeman has been activated off the DL and will start tonight at 3rd base or the Braves. In his two games at Gwinnett, he fielded one 4 hopper to third. I guess it falls under “rehab? I don’t need no stinking rehab”..

Jace Peterson was optioned back to Triple A.

I hope he wears some type of guard on his left arm during his at-bats…

In other moves, Sean Rodriquez was moved from the GCL to Class A Rome and Micha Johnson assigned to the GCL roster.

So, all those folks who thought they would see Fab 5 tonight at Gwinnett will be disappointed but it should be interesting at STP. Kind of a jammed pack line up for the Bravos but could be dicey defensively.

While Newcomb came somewhat unraveled against the formidable Astros lineup, Brandon Phillips pulled the first thread by sitting back on Altuve’s ground ball in the 3rd inning. That was a makeable play, and it didn’t get made. Of course, Altuve came on around to score. And giving the ‘Stros an extra out facilitated the 4 run inning. There were 2 outs when Marwin Gonzalez hit his bases clearing double down the line.

Not only could the Braves have gotten out of the inning down only 2-0, Newk could have gotten out with a great deal fewer pitches.

CORRECTION: Altuve was out on a subsequent fielder’s choice by Josh Reddick. But Reddick came around to score on MarGon’s 2 out double . Without Altuve on base, Reddick would have been an easy ground ball out. Same difference.

Some minor league standouts for the month of June:

Most hits: Ozzie Albies with 29
Most HR’s: 4 tied, including Albies with 4
    Most triples: Albies with 4
Most total bases: Albies with 52

    I sense a theme.

Most wins by pitcher: (not Albies) Mike Soroka with 3
Most innings pitched: Soroka with 34
Most K’s: Lucas Sims with 36

Not only is Albies kicking tail in AAA, he’s also getting some additional instruction from Chipper Jones on his LH swing. I honestly think he’ll get his callup on or before July 31. His time has come.

It’s his job to know who’s running. Kinda made me mad watching the replay, actually. Took one sidestep… nothing forward. Gotta be aggressive in those situations. It’s what separates the great from the just OK.

sorta like when Julio throws fastballs down the middle, during fastball counts, and gets hammered? 😛

to be very fair, he looked a LOT better his last time on the mound, but then again he was throwing 93 to 95, instead of 90 to 92, which makes a difference….

IF Garcia holds them to 4 runs tonight, like his last outing, I will be impressed…if he somehow keeps them to 1-2 runs, his trade value will soar…

2 more names to add to the Sonny Gray / Jose Quintana / Chris Archer shopping list. How about Gerrit Cole and Marcus Stroman?

I’d be happy with either one, honestly. The price for each might be as high as the others, though. It’s all about the right “match”.

On the selling side, here are a handful of Braves that I think could be on the move before the month is up: Brandon Philips, Matt Adams, Jim Johnson or Arodys Vizcaino, Jason Motte, RA Dickey, Jaime Garcia, and… Matt Kemp.

With the exception of Viz and to a certain degree Kemp, none of the above are in the Braves long term plans. Not even Matt Adams. I could even see Kurt Suzuki dealt if the return is right.

True enough that Matt Kemp is under contract through 2019, and that he supplies a good bit of the power on a team that is in the lower half of the league in HR’s. But if an AL team came knocking for a DH and offered a good enough prospect, especially an OF prospect, I think they’d jump and jump quickly. I do find it at least a little intriguing that Lane Adams was kept on the roster over Jace Peterson when Freddie was activated. (On a side note, our bench has become an area of strength after starting the year as a black hole. But that’s a discussion for another post.)

As for Viz, he’s been so up and down. It might be a good time to sell while he’s up in a market that is red hot for quality relievers. I believe there are enough good arms coming up that we could spare him if the deal is right.

Let me preface the above post by saying that there is no way Coppy would sell off all the veterans on short term deals. Those are just a list of possibilities. The clubhouse chemistry is a big deal and those veterans are a big part of it. And it’s not like we’re still in tear-down mode.

But BP has a direct replacement in Ozzie Albies. Adams has been great, but way above the back of his baseball card. And with our cornerstone player having abandoned 1B in favor of Adams, I think we could spare him. Especially when you consider how well Johan Camargo was playing at 3B prior to Freddie’s return.

It might be tough to replace JimmyJohn, but Viz has the arm to do it. The question is if he has the stuff between the ears.

We all know that one of Garcia or Dickey being dealt is almost a given. I’m not sure they’d let both go. That would depend entirely upon Coppy’s ability to pull off a major pitching acquisition. Then both could certainly go.

I’m in total agreement with Ber that tonight’s start by Jaime is crucial. Three bad starts in a row is a slump. Four bad starts in a row is concerning. The saving grace is that his velo has not diminished. He appears to be healthy. Can’t fake healthy. If he can tame the powerful ‘Stros tonight, Coppy’s phone will be ringing off the hook tomorrow. (And that’s weird since it’s a cell phone.)

Pretty sure they are not giving back Alex Wood….

Yes Vee, I would imagine anyone not named Freddie Freeman or Dansby Swanson could consider themselves trade bait.

One must always consider salary dumping as part of the equation. The only reason to trade Phillips would be to make room for Ozzie, I think the Braves are waiting on Chipper for that one.

I agree, Lane Adams is on the short list of who will be sent down next. I don’t see either Satana or Camargo as probables.

As for Matt Adams…teams are going to use the argument that he has only been hot for a month, so ….what do you get for him? And, remember Rio Ruiz? remember how good he looked…for a few weeks?
Johan Camargo…I freely admit, he looks like a very good player.
Looking at his baseball card (so to speak) he has….no power. 12 Hr’s in over 1800 AB’s…now, that doesn’t mean he won’t get more power, but…are people going to be happy with a 5-10 HR guy at 3rd?

As for Matt Adams baseball card…in 2015, he missed 4 months after surgery for a torn quad muscle…
in 2016, in 297 AB’s he had 16 HR’s and 54 RBI’s…so , double those numbers…and I’d gladly take 32 HR’s and 108 RBI’s from him, IF FF can handle 3rd. and since every expert I have heard acts like he will fail, I am rooting for him to be not just good, but a great 3rd baseman….

    Matt is 28
Logan Morrison is 29. except for 2011, (23 72) he had not hit more than 17 HR’s and 54 RBI’s in a season since…this year? 24 HR’s (career high) and 57 RBI’s. Freak year? Or did he finally figure it out?
Justin Smoak, 30, best year til this year 20 HR’s and 50 RBI’s (in 454 ABs) never had a BA higher than .238…This year? 22 HRs 53 RBIs .299 BA

So…Matt Adams is a bit younger, and had a better history of driving in runs…
    pt 2 to come up….

    22 HR 82 RBIs .284 .348

    injured most of last year…

    This year, 24 HRs 52 RBIs .269 .305

but, a 40 + homer guy , as a 29 Y.O free agent… there will be teams out there. I just wonder what you can expect from him…and what it will cost to get him, in years, and money….and a team like the Yankees, with a lot of moola off the books, can swoop in a grab him(Rex Sox could too)…so…then what do you do? What’s plan B?

This is another reason I see no problem with trying FF at 3rd for a month or longer to see what will happen…if he flops, and Adams cools off…at least you know…you know?

Jaime didn’t pitch too badly, but not good enough against the Astros. They are the best team I’ve seen all year. You give them an inch, they take the whole ruler. They are tough top to bottom with no gaps. None. If they pick up another starter, they’re my pick to go all the way.

ok…and then who is the long term 3rd baseman then?

    More:

It’s not Adonis Garcia. It’s likely not Rio Ruiz, although he’s still young and can make additional strides. (And has had a nice run since returning to AAA.) It’s not Johan Camargo. His future is as “super utility”, ala Martin Prado. He’s got Sean Rodriguez ahead of him in that role for another year and a half, then it’s his. Austin Riley is still a possibility, although he’s still a few years away. His year at high-A Florida did not start off with a bang, but has improved recently. He’s not a certainty to stay at the position, either. His future could be in LF or 1B. He’s a big boy with a big boy bat. That said, he’s still the #8 3B prospect in MLB.

I believe the long term answer is yet to be acquired. That could be where Coppy directs his FA dollars this offseason. Of course, we’d all like a trade with the Cubs for their young 3B Jeimer Candelario. We know he’s blocked by Kris Bryant in Chicago. I suppose it depends an how many pitchers Coppy is willing to part with.

In the short term, we’ll continue to see Freddie there unless Adams is traded. If Freddie goes back across the diamond, 3B will become a mix of Camargo and SeanRod. If the Braves want to give Riley more time, they could turn to a guy like Martin Prado, whose contract the Marlins would like to get rid of.

There’s some chatter that the Blue Jays are on the brink of their own rebuild, and they have a young 3B ready to come up and make an impact, They also have 2015 MVP Josh Donaldson under a big contract this season, $17M, with his last year of arb on the horizon for 2018. It’s rumored that he could be a trade piece to help kickstart their rebuild. (I really want their pitcher Marcus Stroman.) Not sure Coppy would part with the pricetag on Donaldson, especially for just 2 years of control. Also not sure he’d want the contract he comes with. But it’d sure be nice to have his bat at 3B.

That’s the long way to elaborate on my earlier statement that our long term 3B is not on the roster yet.

The problem with Jamie’s curve is it ends up high and over the heart of the plate to right handed batters.

well, saw lefty Josh Reddick hittem pretty well last night as well… he’s now hitting .333 against lefties, (granted in fairly limited exposure, 42 AB’s) but he hit .155 in 97 AB’s last year…having a career year at 30 it appears, hitting .315

anyways…I saw some of Garcia’s pitches in the postgame show, there were a few silly swings he got against Astro’s hitters…but even Reddick (Joe mentioned hitting his helmet during an earlier AB too) after seeing a curve (I think ) with a ton of movement, got more patient, then pounded a pitch over the middle…

I want to like guys who can pitch to contact, (They usually stay healthier )have a sinker/2 seemer that moves….but when things are not perfect, they can’t throw a ball past someone, and well, you have seen what can happen, back to back nights when you can’t blow the ball past a hitter , once in awhile…

MLBTR: With lefty-swinging spring training masher Greg Bird and powerful right-hander Chris Carter, the Yankees appeared to have a promising first base tandem on hand at the outset of the season. Instead, the position has been an utter disaster throughout 2017 for the playoff-contending Bombers, whose first basemen entered Wednesday with a putrid .175/.271/.331 batting line and the majors’ second-worst fWAR (minus-1.2).

Jon Heyman, FanRag Sports today: Teams in need of starting pitchers, including the Astros, have been calling the Atlanta Braves about [Julio] Teheran, as they search for alternatives to the obvious top available duo of Quintana and Gray. Would they trade both Garcia and Teheran? I wouldn’t rule it out regardless, and especially if they were able to trade for another starters with multiple years of contractual control.

Freddie gets the start back at 1B tonight with Matt Adams getting a night off. The reported reason is to give Freddie a break from the rigors of the new position. It supposedly has nothing to do with the fact the Nats are tossing a lefty in Gio Gonzalez. Maybe it’s because a deal is being discussed and they don’t want Adams getting hurt. 😉

Okay, the Braves have a winnable situation ahead of them tonight. While Gio is a solid starter, he is hittable and therefore beatable. Another good start for Folty is possible. He has advance from a fifth starter to a solid middle of the rotation guy. Should give two good starts out of three.

I have no qualms in giving Matt Adams a night off. I think Matt kemp could stand a few more but his balky hamstring may be getting better.

Morris was part of one of the trades with the Mets for Kelly Johnson. He is no Craig Kimbrel but he is a solid reliever.

Great reversal of fortunes in just one year.

Jim Johnson is a solid closer if he is not asked to pitch every night.

Absolutely. Then again, that’s true for most late inning relievers.

I think JJ might be on the way out. The Braves have replacements in line, and could gain a good prospect for JJ from a team not located in the nation’s capital. That said, it might be smarter to keep JJ and trade Viz. The return on Viz would be greater, and keeping JJ would give AJ Minter more time to percolate. Minter is the real future closer anyway. If I’m Coppy, that’s the play I make. I just make sure that any reliever I trade goes to another division, and hopefully to the AL.

Motte has been pretty streaky. He started his campaign here kind of shaky, then was near unhittable for a period. He’s in a bit of a downswing now, but I think he’s still valuable. I also think he’s on the trade block.

IMO, he should go back to AA and work exclusively as a starter. The kid has stuff, just no confidence. Absolutely will NOT attack the plate. He has become a nibbler, and that will get you nothing but beat.

He showed plenty of times in his rookie year what he’s capable of. Then somewhere along the way he began to think. He simply needs to take a step back and reboot.

Or he might be a classic “change of scenery” kinda guy. I’d like to see him get over the hump here, but if it has to be elsewhere, then so be it.

    David Steinberg, Washington Post:

Two events were held at Nationals Park Thursday night. The first was a rain delay that lacked much in the way of rain, and it was an abomination, a self-inflicted black eye and a disrespectful affront to thousands of fans.

That the Nats screwed up is obvious: Their decision-making was suspect (much of the delay was conducted without benefit of a tarp, a crucial clue that something was amiss); their communication was inadequate (fans weren’t told what was going on until 9:35, about five minutes before the tarp was removed); and their response to the misfire unsatisfactory. By the time the teams started playing ball — after a delay that lasted as long as a typical game — most of the crowd was gone, and justifiably so: Kids had bedtimes, Metro was closing and the information void offered no particular reason to remain.

Just one example should suffice: Dave Moser, who has two full season tickets, used his reward points to get 18 additional seats for families connected to his youth baseball team. His group waited until the tarp came out, and then finally left around 9, hearing about the 10:10 start time during their car rides home. His reward points are gone, they spent something like $100 on parking and food and drinks, and they saw exactly zero pitches.

“Maybe they should use the money they gained from the evening to improve the pen,” he suggested.

Episodes like what happened last night in DC gives credence, rightly or wrongly, that the Nationals are in the typical DC bubble or are incompetent when it comes to fan managment. Say what you want, even the most occasional fan saw thru the guise of “rain delay” as an attempt to prevent the loss of their starter and having to depend on their awful bullpen to win the game.

Like sending Tanner Roark to the pen. The gNats have had the luxury of playing a very weak schedule to date. It has created a false sense of security for a club that is not as good as they think they are. It is why the Braves will indeed be sellers before the deadline.

The Braves have also played a weak schedule to date. Even so, they are 5-5 against the vaunted gNats this season. That in itself should be a tell. If the Braves can keep an even keel and stay close to .500 this month, they will be well positioned to finish the season with my pre-season projection of 85 wins.

While Medlen has not yet reached “lights out” status in his comeback attempt. He has for the most part been solid as he rebuilds his stamina and mechanics at Gwinnett. Hey, a solid number three guy with an ERA of around 3.00 could do well with the fire power the Braves currently possess. He could well be the veteran presence on this team when Garcia is moved out.

So, like everywhere else in the “south” ( I know, DC is not considered the south) Thunder storms are an everyday occurrence. We got 2 1/2 inches of rain here Wednesday with not forecast of rain in the picture. It’s partly cloudy here today but I have personally seen it rain on one side of my house and be sunny on the other multiple times. Just the way weather works here. It is why I don’t by into the whole man made climate change hoopla. When there is a money trail behind something, I am very leery of the “facts”….

    5. Matt Adams, 1B, from the Braves to the Yankees for Domingo Acevedo, RHP, and Drew Finley, RHP.

The Braves are still holding out some hope that the Freddie Freeman to third base experiment could work (which would allow them to retain Adams as their 1B), but if it doesn’t, from here the Yankees are the most logical trade partner. There is no guarantee Greg Bird will be back this year, Tyler Austin is on the DL and Chris Carter has underperformed so far, meaning the Yankees could easily be in the market for a first baseman (more on this in the AL notes). Yonder Alonso will also be out there, and Lucas Duda could be, too, and any of the three would work (though obviously Duda is probably a longer shot than the others since the Yankees and Mets rarely trade). They could also look instead to Lowrie, or one of two former Yankees — Prado or Solarte – or similar, as they’ve had third-base questions as well. But Adams seems like more of an impact guy.

Yes, my thought exactly about last night’s results.

Two critical plays not made in the ninth: Harper’s single over BP’s glove and the line drive to right that Markakis just missed….

JJ can say what he wants about working on stuff, you just cannot conceal a tired arm. A little less snap on the ball, a little less velocity. It makes a difference.

For sure, he should not even get up to warm up this afternoon.

actually JJ hit 96 once, and 95 a few times…I am sure he is tired….he may not be able to pitch back to back nights….everything was up. No sink at all…
plus…something looks odd about his mechanics…I wish I could see a clip from earlier in the year….something looks different, but I can’t put my finger on it…

That was a painful game to watch though….I mean, one that could have scared the you know what out of the Nats…sweep them, and we’d be what, 5 1/2 behind them? And them without a bullpen….

I went to shower when JJ hit the showers, I knew, I just knew…

It is hard to say one game is any more important that another so early in the season but today’s game can be a watershed moment. A win sends a clear message to the gNats that the Braves are not afraid of you and we are coming for you. A loss means the gNats are holding serve and will use the clock to their advantage. A sort of “prevent defense” mind set.

Not that today’s game will make or break the season for either team but it sure would be an emotional lift for either team going into the break.

I was on the road alot of yesterday and had the game on the radio from about inning 4 through about inning 8… off and on. I don’t know how bad the umpiring actually was, but Jim Powell and Mark Lemke made it sound as if the Nats batters were getting 4 strikes on every AB. Was the strike zone really that bad?

It was very inconsistent. It was very tight for Newk. A lot of wide zones for the gNats however. Bad umpiring appears to be par for the course. That said, 7 walks is a tell. Like a basketball game where one side has 30 fouls and the home team only 3.

I was asleep all afternoon , so I missed the game…
Seems like for once, the Nats bullpen didn’t bleed profusely…
Can you imagine being a fan of that team, and knowing that ownership was basically being cheap , and wouldn’t let the team get the closer they so desperately need…
That’s why it’s a shame J.J. was out there when he clearly had nothing the other nite. the Nats have been left off the hook….well, at least for now…
other teams know how desperately the Nats need someone, anyone(anytwo?) arms to keep them in games they have the lead.
So, they are going to pay a heavy price to get arms…meanwhile, I keep reading how the Yankees, and Red Sox are looking to get 1-2 more arms from perhaps the Marlins (still don’t get why some dopes who would be stupid enough to buy the Marlins for a billion +, a team that supposedly is losing around 70 mil a year, who be ok with trading a ton of the teams players for prospects—even if they just trade away arms, then the Marlins will be like the Nats, blowing game after game, and folks like Stanton will say trade me to a team that wants to win) and I am sure Dodgers, Brewers, etc are all going to be in the market for closers/ set-up guys….

Johan Camargo, is starting to look like a MLB player, eh? He is still only 23…as far as I know, he wasn’t on any top #100 lists, correct? Let me dig…nope….
heck, according to minorleagueball.com, he wasn’t a top 20 prospect of the braves, or even a prospect worth mentioning , period, last November!
    https://www.minorleagueball.com/2016/11/18/13681446/atlanta-braves-top-20-prospects-for-2017

but, I did hear when he first was called up, that he was considered the top fielding braves player….

And, unless this is just an illusion (we have to recall how good Dansby looked in 40 + games last year, he was the odds on ROY for 2017), he looks like he belongs…and should probably start…thing is, where?
I know that V has his fingers crossed that FF can hang at 3rd, so Matt Adams can be the regular 1st baseman 😆
so, IF that works, there is no SS position (I mean, a guy who over the last 4 months has hit, .156, .216, .306, and .130 so far in July, I mean, he deserves to be on a pace to play 158 games, right?) and BP, since he is old (production no longer matters, hit the road Jack) he will be gone soon, so Ozzie at the age of 20 should be the full timer, even though he’s on a pace to strike out 150 times in AAA…
So, what to do? LF? RF? have to trade guys to do that, and they won’t trade them on the off chance that Johan is fully legit…
And then there’s Sean Rodriguez coming back soon….
Too bad we don’t have a DH in the NL, am I right, or am I right????

Vee, I wish I had missed most of yesterday’s game. Of course I did get to see Johan continue to impress. At this point, he is out performing the number one draft pick at short. Makes on wonder where you play him to keep his bat in the line up? Other than fewer home runs, he may be the Braves version of the Astros Marwin Gonzales.

Freddie appears to have not lost his timing.

The kid truly has potential and it is always tough to live up to the expectations that he has to be the second coming. I like him, I believe he will develop into a bonafide major league shortstop but no, he is not really there yet.

I guess it is the price we pay for following a team a little too closely sometimes, we too can fall for the promise of what went want it to be rather than what really have.

Y’all realize he still has only 123 games of ML experience, and just 250 games of total professional experience, right? He’s having to grow up on the big stage. It’s a double edged sword. It’s definitely the fast track, but it’s under constant scrutiny.

There is some speculation that Sean Rodriguez could be ready to return to the ML team as early as July 13. Personally I think that’s a little aggressive; but after seeing Freddie, I don’t put anything past the Braves medical staff.

I say all that to say this… if I’m the GM, I let him continue to “rehab” until I trade Matt Adams. Then both the 40-man and 25-man roster spots open up.

Sean Rodriguez will not take over an everyday spot in the lineup, but he will get plenty of playing time. He’ll be exactly what they wanted from day 1… a guy who will spell someone in the lineup on a regular basis. It’s true that he may get more games at 3B, but I think he’s most valuable giving everyone else a regular day off during the grueling months of summer.

Don’t get me wrong Vee, about how I feel about Dansby, just pointing out the fact he is in a tough spot and I blame the Braves FO for giving him the Jeff Francouer treatment of putting unreasonable expectation on a young player. As you said, he has very limited professional experience.

It is a mistake they apparently have learned their lesson on by keeping Ozzie down on the farm while he continues to work through his problems.

As for the Rodriquez/M.Adams/Brandon Phillips conundrum, the Braves are under no monetary constraint or pressure to unload any of these guys. It is all about making the team better long term.

A gold glove Brandon Phillips is a valuable commodity. An injured/playing hurt BP is just average and is replaceable.

I would be shocked if the Braves don’t make some sort of deal during or shortly after the All-star break. The sun, moon and the stars are simply lining up to make it a high probability. I don’t see SRod being activated until said trade happens. While I am sure Phillips is loath to being put on the DL, that could happen too. It would not hurt him or the team for him to actually get healthier.

True, and DOB said to someone talking about the hype, “do you really think Coppy was behind that?”
Actually, I would think he’d have some say in the matter…
but…out of 3 1/2 months, only been good for 1 of them…players mature at different levels. I was wanting he and Ozzie to come up last year, just cuz the team was so horrible (til last 2 months or so) I now know that would have been a mistake…
Right now, the team has too many folks who are middle infielders, and there is no place to play them, and a guy that should be in AAA (Dansby) can’t be sent down, cuz…face of the franchise!

Cody Bellinger, 21, has only played 18 games at AAA, then came up…some guys are ready early, some aren’t .
Heck, look at how horrible the Phils are. and 1st baseman Rhys Hoskins, who is 24, hit 38 HR’s drove in 116 RBI’s, with a b.a. of .281 (OBP of .377) at the age of 23 at AA. So, he started in the bigs with the Phils, right? Nope….Ryan Howard all over again(look up his sick AAA numbers, numbers he could have had at the ML level, that might have pushed his HOF needle into the red, or black…or well you get the point) stuck at AAA this year, 20 HR’s 66 RBIs .289 Ba .385 OBP.
So, they need to trade their current 1st baseman Tommy Joseph, who is going to be all of 26 in a few days…
I would think Phillies fans would be going nuts wanting him to be in left, right, somewheres, instead of rotting in AAA while they are terrible….
sometimes the grass is greener, sometimes it’s brown…
With all my issues with the way the Braves go about things, I would much rather have braves management vs Nats, Phils, el cheapo Marlins, or ugggh, Baltimore….

Okay, back to baseball. I remember a few years ago when the Braves had a big lead going into the All-star break and failed to make the playoffs. Only reason it wasn’t a bigger story was the corresponding collapse of the Red Sox. I remember John Smoltz saying how important the first two weeks after the AS game it was for a team to get off to a good start.

The Braves face possibly the toughest part of their schedule the next two weeks. It includes the dreaded trip to the left coast where they will face the D’backs and the Dodgers. That is after seeing Arizona and the Cubs at home. It is going to tell the tale of the tape if you ask me.

Call me crazy, but I’m much less concerned with how many games they win in the 2nd half as opposed to how they continue to shape the team. The honest truth is that even if they were to somehow sneak into a playoff spot, which would be a huge undertaking, they don’t have the starting pitching to get past the wild card round.

Stay focused, Coppy. Make the necessary moves to keep this organization on track even if it costs you a few games in the standings. Don’t let false hopes in 2017 derail a real chance at contending in 2018.

Trade Matt Adams; trade Brandon Phillips; trade any starter not named Folty or Newcomb.

Omar Vizquel is one of the best SS I have ever seen. He recently had some comments about SF’s Brandon Crawford:

“I love Crawford. Every time you see him out on the field, he’s doing something good, something that can make a difference in the ball game. In the beginning, you could see that the guy has a lot of tools. Now, he’s one of the best shortstops out there.”

2015: All-Star, Gold Glove, Silver Slugger
    2016: 12th in MVP voting

    First ML season 2011: 66 G, .204/.288/.296
    First full season 2012: 143 G, .248/.304/.349

    Dansby Swanson:

    First 123 ML G: .245/.315/.360

He’s probably been compared to Crawford more than any other SS in the game. I think it’s a fair comparison. I think there’s time for him to become the SS we all want him to be.

Just a heads up; Brandon Crawford spent 3 1/2 seasons in the minors before being promoted to the Show.

It is all a mote point really. The Braves feel they can allow Dansby to learn at the major league level. He is not really keeping the team from being in the play-offs at this point.

I am happy to see Johan Camargo get an opportunity. He is showing he can play at the major league level. The opposition will give him a serious look to learn his weaknesses with the bat just as they have with Dansby.

They are still searching for Freddie’s weaknesses. Oh, he has a few but he is crushing mistake pitches and that is what good hitters do.

It’s nice to see a player emerge from seemingly nowhere. Those are the “intangibles” that make a good team a better team. Johan has passed Jace Peterson in the organizational structure. He should get the lion’s share of time at 3B for now, then become the team’s super sub when SeanRod’s deal is up and they sign or trade for their long term 3B.

Actually, if Johan can continue to develop his power, he might become the long term 3B. Did anyone project Vinnie Castilla as a bopper when he was coming up as a SS in the Braves system?

Actually, yes, Bobby Cox was devastated when the Rockies drafted Vinny. He knew of Castilla’s potential but the Braves could not protect everyone from the expansion draft. I think Vinny was the number one player taken from the Braves by the Rockies. It has been so long ago, I can’t remember all the details but Vinny was a rising star in Richmond. Those young shortstops normally bulk up and become third basemen when the get their man weight.

I am of the opinion that the only difference from an everyday starter and a super sub is batting average…

Once a player is hitting over .300 on a constant basis, managers look for a way to keep their bat in the line up. How much better was the Braves team when Santana was playing left and Matt Kemp was DH? Defense does not always win ball games but it sure does prevent a lot of losses.

Which began last year with Johan Camargo. He was a defense first, mediocre bat SS until this past offseason when he began to add some bulk. It increased his power and offense, as we’ve all seen, but also decreased his range and flexibility slightly. The tradeoff has definitely been worth it and he could very well settle into a regular 3B role. One can only wonder how he might improve from this season to next.

The super sub player became the rage when the Royals added Ben Zobrist on their way to the World Series. Ironically, it was Zobrist who prevented Javier Baez from becoming an everyday player, instead becoming the preeminent super sub on the way to his own World Series. That’s the type of player that Coppy wanted in Sean Rodriguez. Now he has it in Camargo… and maybe also in SeanRod. It’s a good problem to have.

Well, a good problem to have unless your Adonis Garcia. 😐

Yep, pretty sure Adonis has been Wally Piped. Adonis is not really all that bad but his bat is not quite good enough to compensate for his glove. I wonder if he will like it in Japan or Korea?

He well might stay on the DL until after the September call-ups. Jace Peterson may well be the definition of a quad A player now. I look for him to be part of a package to be traded, much like Tommy LaStella.

    Tomahawk Take’s Alan Carpenter:

Why do I think there’s a good chance Teheran will be dealt this Summer? Two reasons: excellent numbers away from SunTrust Park, and Coppy may smell an opportunity to finish off the rebuild by undercutting the White Sox and others. The timing could be right.

What he’s alluding to is the extremely high pricetags being set on the market’s “controllable” arms, namely Jose Quintana, Sonny, Gray, Marcus Stroman, etc.

According to Jon Heyman, the prospects being discussed between CHW and their wooers HOU and NYY is big time high. In the instance of NYY, it’s their top pitching prospect and the top position prospect to start.

Coppy may sense an opportunity to rake in a big haul that doesn’t look as big in comparison. He might still get a couple of Top 10’s. So instead of P Gleyber Torres and OF Clint Frazier, maybe we could bring in P Justus Sheffield and 3B Miguel Andujar. In the instance of Andujar, he could step into the ML lineup right away.

How bad do the Cubs need pitching? They reportedly have offered Kyle Schwarber to DET in an effort to land Michael Fulmer or Daniel Norris. They’d be selling low on Schwarber who has had a pretty bad 2017. But we all know what he’s capable of doing. Problem is, can he do it behind the plate? He’s worse than MattyK in LF.

I think Julio can net 2 Top 20 picks. I think he can land Candelario plus another. If I had it my way, I’d make a deal for Candelario and recent callup C Victor Caratini. IMO, the Cubbies need pitching bad enough to consider that plausible. If you really want a blockbuster, make it Julio and Kurt Suzuki (because they’ll need a replacement backup C if they trade Caratini) and let them add other lesser prospects in the deal. That’s a win/win for both teams.

While such a trade would hurt the Braves in the short term in an area they’ve struggled already, their rotation, the truth is that Julio is one of the reasons they’ve struggled. He’s been brilliant on the road, but horrid at home. And he pitches half his games at home. I believe it would be worth it for the future return in the everyday lineup.

Yes, the ASG was back to being an exhibition, as it should be. Forcing it to have a direct effect on the World Series ranks up there with artificial turf and domes.

Note, my mentioning the DH in the same category as turf and domes has waned. I’m trying to get used to the idea. I don’t necessarily like the idea, but might as well get used to it. If we’re going to continue to have interleague play, which really only means we have one league with an unbalanced schedule, we might as well merge the rules. We’ve already merged the umpires, so the only remaining difference is the DH… and we know that golden calf for the MLBPA will never be put aside. So if that’s the way it has to be, and since we already have a DH on our roster (Matt Kemp), I want my team to be able to have the same advantages as the other teams. Bring it on.

BTW- a byproduct would be to alleviate the strain of running a short bench with the increased need for an extra bullpen arm. Having a DH lessens the need for a PH.

That’s whats so crazy about Quintana and Gray….that just aren’t that great this year, and yet their teams are asking the moon + for guys that only play every 5 days…Rockies seem to be doing just fine with a crop of young starters…it can happen.

But they do have a kid OF named Jahmai Jones who was their 2nd round pick in 2015 that is very interesting. Oh.. and he’s from Roswell, GA, just down the road from Dansby. The problem is, he’s their #1 prospect and maybe the only real exciting prospect they have. In fact, he’s so exciting, they wouldn’t part with him for anybody.

Looking at their prospect list, I don’t see much else that’s very exciting. Nothing. At least nothing any closer than 2020. Then again, BP probably wouldn’t net a top pick anyway. Let’s see who’s down the line a little…

So, here is a poser no one has given thought to for a while, The Marlins:

The fish are 41-46, 10 1/2 game back while the Braves are at 42-45, 9 1/2 games back. Now here is the real head scratchier. When you look at the Marlin’s line up, you realize they have some real fire power. Borh, Ozuna, Yelich, Stanton, and some other guys I am too lazy to look up their names right now but pretty stout never the less.

I seems to me that the only thing preventing them from being a real force is the same thing that is plaguing the Cubs… PITCHING!

The young arms making their way through the system may be even more valuable than even we fanatics might believe at first blush. Yes, I agree that trading Julio to anyone outside of the NL East might just be the ticket but until the Braves have some viable temporary alternatives, I think hold onto him unless Coppy gets his asking price.

I could see a swap for a guy like Quintana with Julio going the other way but one has to question the real long term benefit. I am of the mind that Kris Medlen will make his return when Garcia, Dicky or Julio are traded. Just makes sense to do it. Of course I would not be really at all surprised to see Meden traded. Especially if the Braves don’t feel he can hold up long term.

Akiel Morris pitched a nice solid inning against the gNats Sunday. Sam Freeman has been money but he too has been in danger of overuse.

Ozzie will get his callup in this year’s second half, well past the Super 2 cutoff, and after the veteran placeholder on an expiring contract is traded near the deadline.

I foresee the same thing for Ronald Acuna next year… a mid-season callup after the veteran placeholder on an expiring contract is traded near the deadline.

But make no mistake, this won’t stop the team from giving him some ML exposure this September.

I love running across tidbits like this. Credit to Jeff Schafer of Tomahawk Take:

The Atlanta Braves are expected to promote 20-year-old Austin Riley from the Florida Fire Frogs to the Mississippi Braves. I say expected because nothing official has been announced yet, but instead we’ve come over a “Honeybaked Ham” situation again.

Riley’s girlfriend posted on Twitter 140 characters referring to a possible promotion and she used the hashtag “#doubleA”. Riley responded to her saying thank you for all the support. Okay, so sounds official unless both accounts got hacked…which isn’t too far fetched, but doubtful.

It makes sense with the AA team losing Acuna from their lineup after his promotion to AAA, not that they play the same defensive position, but Riley replaces the middle-of-the-order bat. Ever heard of Andrew Daniel? Me neither. He was playing 3B for them. Heavy emphasis on the word was.

Unless you are talking about Matt Kemp and to a lesser degree Nick Markakis, the Braves have no big salary dumps.

Just a passing thought… Who, on the current Braves pitching staff has the best “swing & miss” stuff? One thing that has bothered me this season is the number of two strike hits given up by both Garcia and Teheran. That out pitch is the difference maker to me. I know Garcia has had abysmal results with his breaking ball that has stayed up in the zone. Not unlike Big Sexy having pitches break back over the plate to the sweet spot on the bat.

Teheran had a lot of hard hit balls find gloves in his last effort against the gNats. I know, he still won but to me it is troubling.

Won’t be a salary dump. I’m expecting some team next season to need a seasoned veteran “professional hitter” to round out a lineup, and Nicky will fit the bill. It’ll be a chance for him to truly contend, too.

The thing that will change that timeline is if the Braves are the ones in heavy contention. If that’s the case, they may not want to tamper with the lineup. Or alternatively, if TATE (The Answer To Everything) excels in spring, they could go ahead and move Nicky before the season even kicks off. There will be a team somewhere in need of a veteran hitter to complete their lineup. There always is

Alot of dribblers and popups. his philosophy was that he’d prefer to get a guy out on 1 pitch as opposed to 3 or 4. It’s why he pitched so many complete games. It’s a bit nutty to think of this 19-year-old Venezuelan (he doesn’t turn twenty until the week before Christmas) as knocking on the door of the majors, but check this out:

July 3rd – Mississippi finishes up a series with Chattanooga at Pearl, MS. He goes 2 for 4 with a pair of stolen bases.

    July 8th – Didn’t play. Oh… that’s because…
July 9th – He’s in Miami for the Futures Game, wowing observers with the most homers for the ‘World’ team and showing off his arm.
July 10th – Now he’s back at Pearl as the M-Braves open with Jacksonville. I suppose he can be forgiven for going 0-4 the first night.
July 12th (last night) – 3rd game with the Jumbo Shrimp (yes, seriously): 3 for 4 with two doubles. That’s 4 for 12 on the series. He’s hitting .326/.374/.520/.894 in 57 AA games.
July 13th – He gets promoted again… and is expected to join the Gwinnett Braves in Charlotte, NC tonight for his first AAA game.

July 13th – He gets promoted again… and is expected to join the Gwinnett Braves in Charlotte, NC tonight for his first AAA game.

As you both know, the Gwinnett Braves are having a contest to change their name, here is one that did not make the cut. The Gwinnett Peach Pits, because they are poison…

I know, a cheap shot but like J-hey.. they are easy…

Just to show I’m an equal opportunity smart ass, Richmond VA had a contest for a new city slogan, I submitted this one (did win, I don’t know why)

    Richmond… We’re History.

For those of us sitting on our butts…the 4 days off from real games seems interminable . I am sure the players (especially relief pitchers) it is a huge break, mentally and physically speaking….

Hopefully, Kemp and BP will have healed up some…
Speaking of Kemp…he’s been cold, for quite some time. I had no idea for how long. After hitting .321 in April, and .357 in May…for June, 22 for 92 (.239 ba) 2 HR’s and only 8 RBIs that month.

July, even worse. 5 for 31 (161) with no homers and only 2 RBI’s.
So, how much of this is because he is hurt? It’s swell to want to gut it out, out there, but you really don’t help a team at all if you don’t hit.
Some insider story on espn (So glad , as much as I was tempted I never gave them any money to read their stories) one guy is saying the braves should trade him for anything they can get basically, if some team is desperate enough for him to be their DH.

Here is the thing. Kemp and BP are guys that get runners in, especially late and close. Nick is that guy, at times too, but has no power(And that’s going to be one reason it’s going to be hard to trade Nick at some point, cuz power seems to be the name of the game now, unless you are some super speedy CF’er)

and in case use guys have forgotten (And I KNOW you haven’t) one of main reasons the braves couldn’t win playoff series is guys just didn’t seem to know how to hit with runners on, and nobody out. You know the drill. 2nd and 3rd, nobody out. The opposing team walks a guy to load the bases. Braves sucker #1 tries to hit a grand slam, and either pops up weakly, or strikes out. sucker #2 then strikes out or pops up to shallow right, no chance to score. 3rd guy finally hits a ball deep enough to get a run in, but…it’s too late, 3rd out…

Kemp and BP in particular, they will get that runner in, they live for those moments.

FF would do that, but teams are just gonna walk him every time unless bases are loaded…
So, trade Nick (if you can) and keep Kemp, he is still only 32. Being hurt, and slumping makes you look old….

The 6 finalist names for the Gwinnett AAA franchise all suck profusely. They blow so badly that I don’t even think I’ll dignify them by typing them here.

It’s no longer wise to open up a contest to the public for a name. (Remember Boaty McBoatface?) I’m sure there were a handful of serious entrants for the contest, but the names chosen as finalists cannot be serious. They’re that bad.

What disappoints me most is that Gwinnett GM North Johnson seems OK with the finalists. It certainly makes me wary of his decision making ability.

According to the Gwinnett Daily Post, a total of 4,024 submissions were entered online with more than 900 different name ideas. A selection committee of G-Braves and Atlanta Braves staff members, as well as branding partner Brandiose, decided which names made the final cut to six.

If you ask me, all of those on the committee need to be fired.

OK… I’ll post the finalists along with the “explanations”, although there are no sufficient explanations. Somebody needs to go outside and cut me a switch. I may editorialize.

    Gwinnett Buttons

The Buttons honor Gwinnett County’s namesake, Button Gwinnett, signer of the Declaration of Independence. The best of the dregs. Problem is, most of the metro Atlanta area is transient, and few have a clue as to the history of Gwinnett County. Not to mention most of today’s generation cannot tell you what the Declaration of Independence is anyway.

    Gwinnett Big Mouths

Named after the state fish of Georgia, the largemouth bass, it is a tribute to bass fishing on Lake Lanier. You have to be kidding.

    Gwinnett Gobblers

The Gobblers celebrates the outdoors, hunting and eating all the foods we love. They are obviously courting the rural fan base with this one.

    Gwinnett Hush Puppies

The club’s tidbit on this name — “Our stealthy hunting dog is sneaking through the weeds, about to rustle up some ducks. But don’t think we’re all that serious. You can expect a “corny” fan experience at the “Puppies” game!” Oh, Lord, help me.

    Gwinnett Lambchops

A chop off the old block, the Lambchops marries the region’s love of home cooking with the Tomahawk Chop of the Atlanta Braves. If they choose this one, I will burn all my Gwinnett gear and stay far away from Coolray Field.

    Gwinnett Sweet Teas

The Sweet Teas celebrate the laid-back lifestyle of Gwinnett County while displaying a real sweet look. Because I want my competitive sports teams to be both sweet and laid back. Geez.

Now some positive news from the AAA team…

In his AAA debut, all Ronald Acuna did was collect 3 hits, a walk, a HR, 2 RBI, and 3 runs scored. Not a bad night, kid.

According to Jon Heyman, the Royals have interest in Jaime Garcia. Makes sense as they have a need at the back end of their rotation and don’t want any long term commitments. They are nearing the end of their window for serious contention and feel adding a rental starter could get them back to the World Series one more time.

Here’s something that flew under the radar…

The Braves transactions page says the team had outrighted Chaz Roe to AAA. That means that they activated him from the 60-day DL and immediately DFA’d him, and that he went unclaimed on waivers.

It’s not that big a deal that we didn’t get any reporting on it because it is just Chaz Roe, but what makes it significant is that his return from the 60-day DL didn’t affect our 40-man roster, which is currently full.

Also under the radar was Micah Johnson being activated and optioned to AAA. He had options remaining, so that part was easy. But his activation filled the 40-man to its max.

The one guy still on the 60-day DL is Sean Rodriguez, who is close to activation. I imagine the Braves will delay his activation through July until all trades are completed and the 40-man roster opens up again.

Speaking of SeanRod, he was back at AAA in his rehab, and their lineup yesterday featured him, Micah, Ozzie, Acuna, Dustin Peterson, and Anthony Recker, with Matt Wisler on the bump. It’s no wonder they throttled Charlotte 13-4.

4 more minor league promotions that occurred over the off days:

OF/1B Tyler Neslony – up from High-A Florida Fire Frogs to Mississippi
RHP Jacob Webb – up from High-A Florida Fire Frogs to Mississippi
RHP Junior Rincon – up from High-A Florida Fire Frogs to Mississippi
OF Justin Ellison – up from Class A Rome Braves to Florida Fire Frogs

Remember the name Tyler Neslony. He was drafted 2 years ago out of Texas Tech while competing in the College World Series tournament. I saw him then as their RF and thought he really stood out as a player in that group. IMO he’s got a real shot to be a ML OF.

“Someone need to go outside and cut me a switch.”

is there a child of the south who never heard that expression used against them? I nearly choked on my Wheaties when I read that line. Still chuckling…

Yes, all of those nicknames are pretty lame, I’m sure Va Teach will want the copyright honored on “The Gobblers” How low will it take the Gobblers to become the Goobers?

Big Mouths, well, I get it, Not quite as catchy as the Walleyes but maybe better that the Catfish. Still, it is a better slogan for TMZ or the Enquirer. Makes me think Joan Rivers. They could use the logo from the Rolling Stones Album. The Buttons… Aw, as in, as cute as a button… or Red Buttons, not to be mistaken for the “Fight’n Tiddlywinks” The Lambchops? Calling Sharrie Lewis…. or “The Lambchops” they are what’s for dinner….
The “Hush Puppies” fits like and old shoe, is Cleo still doing endorsements?
The Sweet Teas? Truly, they could pick up the support of the diabetes lobby. Next time you head out for your dialysis, think of the Sweet Teas… Or they could get the endorsement of “Little Sweet” from the Dr Pepper ads.

Yes, they all could strike fear in the heart of any self loathing snowflake… Like you said Vee, too many “come heres”

Now baseball. Acuna kind of suck all the oxygen out of the room doesn’t he? Peterson had a pretty good night too, and Sean Kazmar went 3-6 with a home run and 6 RBI. Wisler pitched 7 strong with 6 hits, 2 ERs, 8 Ks, 2 BBs.
Minter pitched a shutdown inning with 2 Ks and a walk but Cabrera showed he is not yet ready for prime time, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk in one inning of work,

But, it is minor league baseball, Sean Rod went o fer… Still a work in progress I would say.

Pretty easy to see why the Sally League has first half and second half champions… They just swap out teams after each draft… Got to play them somewhere.

I’m thinking Ber, that you are on the money with Kemp. he is trying to play through an injury/hurt/pain and he can’t get his legs under himself to drive the ball. Really needs to heal up but I don’t know that the Braves are that willing to have him sit out.

I remember the “Great Eight” that Chipper was a part of. A couple of other guys that made it to the bigs were Javy Lopez and Jose Oliva. Some of the others like Melvin Nieves were traded away. The trick is to truly know which ones will really shine. I guess that is why Acuna gets the ink.

And even though Julio has had such a tough season in SunTrust Park, he’s been strong on the road. And with the pitching market having a high demand and the supply being very low, the price on Julio will be high… and it won’t scare contending teams, like the Yankees, away. And he wouldn’t be pitching in STP half the season.

While it might seem silly to trade one of the best pitchers, under a fairly team friendly contract, the return you might get in this market now might tilt the balance toward trading. And the assets you acquire in such a deal would add to the “bank” you have to acquire Sonny Gray or Marcus Stroman or Gerrit Cole.

One has to believe that the push for Quintana fell under the would’a, could’a, should’s category. I’m sure Coppy would have liked to added Quintana and could have done the deal but felt that should he had done so, the short term gain did not balance out the long term loss.

Acuna is likely at the top of every opposing GM’s wish list now but Coppy knows what he has and he also knows Markakis is not the long term answer in the Atlanta outfield nor is Matt Kemp. Some times the best trades are those you don’t make.

Now is not the time to trade away the future. The Braves are a year away from making that sort of deal. They are the longest of long shots at this point even with a bonifide Ace. You need more than one.

All those young guns will only appreciate in value. While Wisler and Blair did not yield instant big league results, they are still pretty solid. They will pitch in the big leagues some day for someone.

I don’t believe they’re looking for a Quintana or a Gray or a Cole to get them over the top this year, but for next year and the next. And i think Coppy has alluded often to the fact that his large stockpile of young pitching prospects is for use on both the field and in the market. “Capital” is the term I believe he used. Every team that truly wants to contend must have an ace in their rotation. The Braves do not have such, and won’t next year either. Julio is not that as much as we like to give him that label. Could Folty be that guy? Uh.. .maybe, but he’s likely a strong #2 or #3. Young Newk? Probably not. Again, a strong #2 or #3. Up and comer Mike Soroka? Maybe, but certainly not this year or next. The closest we have to profiling as a top-of-the-rotation “ace” is Kolby Allard, who is at least 2 years from making his ML debut.

No, the reason Coppy is so hot to get one of these guys this year is that he needs them for 2018 and 2019. After that, the Allards and Sorokas and Ian Andersons can emerge.

Make no mistake – Ronald Acuna is not going anywhere. Other teams can ask all they want, but he’s untouchable. Is Ozzie? Well… probably pretty close, but maybe not necessarily. I say that only because the Braves currently have a glut of middle IF’s. If Ozzie could fetch you Gerritt Cole, you almost have to do it. But it has to be for a guy you know can step in and be your #1.

Most likely the Braves would be willing to part with Luiz Gohara or Joey Wentz as pitchers, and Dustin Peterson or Travis Demeritte or Christian Pache as position prospects. Probably even Alex Jackson.

Untouchables: Acuna, Allard, Soroka, Kevin Maitan, and maybe Anderson. Outside of that, for a top controllable arm, everyone else might be on the table.

I was thinking the last few days how so many of the braves “studs” (not crazy about the word stud, but pieces bothers me more 😉 )
the #1 issue, especially with the pitchers? Age.
    https://www.minorleagueball.com/2016/11/18/13681446/atlanta-braves-top-20-prospects-for-2017

take a look, everyone and their brother is 18-19 years old. (and Acuna’s ETA is 2020, what a difference a few months can make!) Acuna and Ozzie are both 19. which is fine if/when they are ready, except of course they become free agents at 26-27. Hopefully they feel loyal (and are kept far, far away from Borass) and perhaps will sign team friendly deals early on…
but with the pitching. Clearly, no one has the magic combo of workload and rest for pitchers. Just watch innings(and pitch counts) for first several years, feels like you have to be 23-24 before they throttle back, (so to speak, perhaps allow full throttle?) you don’t see guys 21-22 going 200 innings…of course you rarely see 200 innings, period!
so, as awesome as Mike Soroka has been, you can’t have him pitching in Sept, this year or next, right? Unless he pulls a hamstring and misses a month of the season. crazy.
Kolby Allard 19. Patrick Weigel 22, but TJ and will miss most of next year if not all of it.
Lucas Sims is 23, so IF Julio was traded, natural call up, though I see Aaron Blair has been “decent” of late, 3 of his last 4 starts at least, and finally went 7 innings. Matt Wisler actually has a lower era than either of them (though it’s 3.72) and hasn’t given up more than 3 runs in a start since May 20th, and he’s gone 7 innings back to back starts…just might not be able to be a good reliever…
I’d love, love, love to see Medlen make it back, but he had 3 bad starts in a row, and while he has brought his ERA down, it’s still at 6.25
being a bit distracted, not sure I have made whatever silly point I was trying to make except that there is of course lots of pitching in the pipeline, but some may not be available for 2-3 years…do you risk trading potentional #1-2 starters like Allard, Soroka , knowing they might win 15 + year after year (but not til 2019-20) think Adam Wainwright, for a Sonny Gray , or do you hold on to them , knowing people always get hurt, and you can always trade them later? But of course if they come up briefly, and look great, no one is going to want to trade them away, right?
It’s just odd to see guys that go once every 5 days costing 2 top prospects, especially when you are not getting back John Smoltz…..

    good points V…
Untouchables: Acuna, Allard, Soroka, Kevin Maitan, and maybe Anderson.

and I think that’s the problem Coppy has, it’s a crazy world out there. Red Sox, Nationals and now the Cubs HAVE given up their untouchables….
and it really doesn’t make sense to me. IMHO, the nats gave up way too much for a very good, but not superstar CF’er. But, there went their 2 top pitching prospects.
the Red Sox gave up basically their best hitting prospect and pitching prospect for Sale, a clear #1, but they are lucky so far he is healthy….
With free agents costing less prospect wise, it would seem to make sense to wait til the off season, except I don’t think there are any awesome free agents to be, are there?
Garrett Cole is someone you would have to consider giving up a ton for , but 1, don’t even know if Pirates would trade him, and 2, you know after what the White Sox just got, the Pirates will want too. so Ozzie and Soroka, and know they have a hole in their rotation as Soroka is too young. So they may be looking for a ready to step in to the rotation guy….
I just hope Coppy doesn’t mind only being able to trade BP, and perhaps a bullpen arm…and not getting much for BP cuz stats heads say he’s not really good…

Like Gil says, the best trades are often the ones you don’t make…..

On a slightly different note. As y’all know, the upcoming stretch of games with the D’Backs and the Cubbies as well as the road trip to Arizona and LA is a rough stretch. That said, I think the Braves should embrace the home field advantage. That being the unmerciful heat and humidity. The D’Backs are an indoor team. The Cubs do not normally play in the 80% humidity the south is so famous for.

Make those starting pitchers sweat. take pitches, get into long counts. The braves meanwhile should be training in the steam room. I have not forgotten the two a days in August. That was before coaches were shamed into allowing kids to re hydrate when playing in 98 degree heat. Just saying…

Danny Santana did not have staph, and is slated to play a couple of rehab games in Gwinnett starting tonight. He could be ready to return as early as Monday. Sean Rodriguez likewise says he’s “ready to return”. The team will have some major roster decisions soon.

On another positive note, Viz is throwing a bullpen session tonight and could be ready for some rehab soon himself.

Speaking of pitchers, Jason Motte has been DL’d with a back strain and Jason Hursh has rejoined the team.

I agree Vee but I would not be a surprise for the Braves to can him after the left coast swing. That way the team would have a sufficiently bad record for them to justify it to themselves.

DOB reports that Danny Santana will begin rehabbing at triple A tonight. Getting crowded in Charlotte methinks. Look for Lane Adams to go down when Santana returns or Jace. maybe both. The Braves will have to shuffle the deck if they don’t make a trade soon to create some room on the 40 man roster.

I think they will try to trade O’Flarerty and Mott, although they are both on the DL. Don’t be shocked if Cabrea is cut. He just does not seem to be getting any better. Trades will happen pretty soon I think.
