#190: Hope Springs Eternal – Again

Gil
Mechanicsville

By the time this is posted, the pitchers and catchers will have likely reported to the Braves new spring training home in North Port, Florida. It is again that time of year for the players to shake off any rust which may have accumulated but with year round training programs employed by players today, little rust is expected.

The biggest stories going in this spring will be the losses of Josh Donaldson’s presence, and the absence of his bat and glove. The hope is the combination of Johan Camargo and Austin Riley at third will be potent enough to at least occasionally say “What Rain”?

Johan Camargo

Johan has worked hard during the off season to cut down on the bulk and increase the tone of his body in hopes of recapturing his agility afield. Who knows what caused him to fall in such a funk after being regulated to a bench role but he looked awful and played poorly both with his glove and his bat. It was only after his short stint in Gwinnett that his bat returned to play. That at least can give us some hope.

Austin Riley

Riley was the second coming of Roy Hobbs when he was first promoted but as soon as the book was out on him, his hitting dropped off and at times he looked completely lost. The thing every rookie goes thru is discovering when pitchers make adjustments, it is up to him to do the same. In an interview with Dave O’Brien he has indicated that he has worked on his pitch recognition. He is a young kid so I have hope he will return to his deep ball hitting prowess early in the season. The extra player allotted this season should open a spot for him on the roster.

Ozuna

The pick up of Marcell Ozuna for one year may or may not work out. We will have to see if his hitting philosophy adapts to the Braves hitting coaches and he can get past the urge to upper cut the ball. He is big and strong and doesn’t need to depend on tricks to hit home runs. To me, the only real question mark is the health of his right shoulder. If it hasn’t healed sufficiently, we will see a lot of teams run on him to take an extra base on balls hit to left.

Enders Incarte

Pache

Another question mark is if Ender Inciarte’s hamstrings will hold up. Any blip on the radar by Ender and he may find himself Wally Pipped and swapping places Cristian Pache’ in Triple A. Ender may still be in line as part of a trade package to make room on the 40 man roster.

Hernandez

The pen looks solid and it should be fun to watch Felix Hernandez try to earn a spot in the starting five against Sean Newcomb. Throw in highly touted prospect Ian Anderson, Kyle Wright, Bryse Wilson and Touki Toussaint will make it fun to watch how they perform this spring. At least the Atlanta area folks will get a chance to see how they perform with 8 games schedule for TV this spring.

So kick back and watch the show, a new story everyday and remember, nothing happens in a vacuum. The rest of the NL East will still be looking to dethrone the Braves from the in season championship and the Braves will be playing with a chip on their shoulder thinking they missed their chance last year.

Hey, everybody. Well, I’ve tried working on this new lead page with mixed results. Got the lead up, got some widgets posted and updated. Actually got some images to stay where I wanted them.
But, talented person that I am, somehow and I haven’t a clue how, I deleted our Roster. Bummer. If y’all will be so kind, send me your day and month of birth if you’d like to be included in the list. Sorry. I didn’t mean to mess up! 😀

An early spring… Yep, it is right around the corner. The brain trust at Atlanta will begin to sort thru all those arms, looking for about 15 that have a shot at making the big club plus the Shuttle. When I grow up, I want a ball club that is just like the Dodgers and Yankees. Relevant in every conversation every year.

It’s not hard to stay relevant when you have an unlimited flow of money. How many teams could literally take on $27M + $48M with less than a week to go to Spring Training? That total is higher than 5 current team payrolls. Entire team payrolls.

Speaking of which, the early reporting on the Betts deal was premature. Boston not only passed on taking hard throwing Graterol, they allowed the Dodgers to acquire him. Weird.

But in the end, the Twins got better, the Dodgers got better, and the Red Sox got long term value for Betts who was not gonna be around after 2020. And the Angels got mad and pulled out of their deal to acquire Joc Pederson. Halos owner Arte Moreno got impatient and threw a hissy fit. Stupid. Pederson was a good fit there.

After reading it a second time and looking at the proposed changes more closely, I have to admit that I’m not totally against any of them. The argument against adding more teams into the playoffs has always been the watering down of the regular season. But I think they have fairly well addressed those concerns with the formatting of the proposed wild card rounds. I hate the current “one and done” wild card play-in game, but also do not like the potential for long series and a lengthy playoff “season”. The proposal to have best 2 of 3 all in one location and on consecutive days solves that. It also incentivises the need to win those regular season battles. The next positive is to play all the games on the same day in a cascading order in the same way that the NCAA mens basketball tourney is done. It prevents all those additional days. If they can add the additional games and still get a World Series champion crowned before the end of October, then I’m in.

Just for the sake of discussion, because there are still rumors buzzing about involving Kris Bryant…

If, and this is a big IF the Cubs came sniffing around trying to trade us Bryant, and wanted pitching back in return, which ML ready (or very close to ML ready pitcher) would you be willing to let go. And how much value would you be willing to trade to acquire 2 years of Kris Bryant in Atlanta? Remember, Bryant is not a premium defender at 3B, and LF is now occupied by Marcell Ozuna.

    What say you, Stuffers?

      Here’s my thoughts:

I would NOT give up Max Fried. Period. I also would not send Ian Anderson. Those guys are right off the board. If I had to choose between Sean Newcomb and Kyle Wright, I honestly think I’d prefer to keep Wright and send Newk. Wright has a greater ceiling. (In fact, I think Wright may have a better chance to unseat King Felix for the #5 rotation spot than Newk has, but that’s a different topic.)

But if I were to open with Newk, I would not want to pile on too many other pieces of the future. After all, we are talking about only 2 years of Bryant.

They don’t have a direct replacement for Bryant at 3B, except for possibly David Bote who got 67 games there last year. I’m not sure they view Bote as a full-timer, and would likely ask for Austin Riley. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m not giving them Riley. Big time RH power at 3B doesn’t come down the pike very often. I’m not giving it up for 2 years of Bryant. (For Nolan Arenado? Yes. But again, that’s a different topic.) But I would include Johan Camargo if that’s the price of admission.

So for the sake of this discussion, I would send ML ready pitchers Sean Newcomb and Bryse Wilson as the centerpieces (because I have pitching depth), add in Johan Camargo as a replacement for Bryant, and give them reliever prospect Jasseel de la Cruz to put it over the top (again, dealing from the area of strength).

To me, that’s a good deal for both sides and would not mortgage the future for the Braves in the process.

From the above, you can interchange Bryse Wilson, Tucker Davidson, or Patrick Weigel and I’d be just fine with it. I’d have to think about Kyle Muller, but maybe him too. Just make sure I can keep Max Fried, Ian Anderson and Kyle Wright. Those 3 guys along with ace Mike Soroka will be 4/5 of our rotation in the near future and for a few years down the road. Sprinkle a seasoned veteran into that mix and that dog will hunt!

I guess the first question would be if the Rockies were indeed serious about trading Arenado. The reason being one is a long term solution and thus has more value and Bryant, who is a good player is not THE player. To be honest, I am not even sure he is that much better a player than Austin Riley is or can be. Riley has shone his potential. Yes, he dropped off but I think it was a combination (an unreported injury of some type), getting exposed to ungoddly breaking stuff and the steep learning curve every rookie goes thru. Just as an aside, Jason Heyward never has become the elite hitter that was expected but that is another story.

As far as pitchers, the pot is so full right now, any of them could be great. I would hate to trade away the next Wainwright but I would not wish another Shelby Miller trade on anyone. Those trades cause a team to not want to ever do business with you again.

No, I am all in on a trade that helps both clubs.

One more comment about Riley… He has a history of struggling a bit at whichever level he is exposed to in the beginning. Second time around he learns the pitchers and he is gang busters… Just saying I think he will be every bit as good as Bob Horner. Sooooo… Lets see how evreyone looks coming out of spring training but if the Braves stand pat, I can live with it.

I cannot disagree with anything you said. I too think Riley can be every bit as good as Bryant, but I must admit it’s still not a certainty. Bryant does bring a discernible amount of certainty with him (barring injury of course, a disclaimer which applies to all players). He is a 5.02 WAR a year player for his 5 years in MLB. And while I do not necessarily get into all the “advanced metrics”, I do recognize the use of WAR as a comparative stat given the consistency of its use among all players. Johan by comparison was a negative WAR last year, but did post a 3.0 WAR in 2018, easily his best season. But his career average is just 1.33. There is simply not enough service time for Riles to calculate a relative WAR for an entire season.

So when you consider that Bryant should/could be worth an additional 4 Wins over Johan, and those 4 wins in a tight NL East race could be the difference between a 3rd consecutive division title and missing the playoffs entirely. So it’s still something that should be considered.

To be clear, I am not advocating for AA to push a trade for Kris Bryant. I only started this thread for discussion purposes.

For my money (pun fully intended), I’d rather see AA make a trade for an additional starting pitcher… someone more proven to insert into the rotation that will be young but talented. King Felix is not that guy. Felix is basically a half season placeholder for Kyle Wright or Ian Anderson. Nothing more. If, and that’s a big IF, he starts the season as the #5, the Braves will honestly only be looking for about 10 good starts out of him. That’s probably the best we can hope from him at this juncture of his injury marred career.

ok, still feels like the season is a long, long way off, but at least there is light at the end of the tunnel! 🙂

    Contrarian Berigan strikes again…
kinda sorta….Kris Bryant is a good defender. I have seen enough cubs games thru the years and highlights of cubs games to know that. As much as I have issues with WAR, etc…I really cannot stand the defense metrics b…you know what. Red Sox signed Kevin Pillar (since they once had Kevin Millar, it makes perfect sense! ) and MLBTR tried to say he just wasn’t all that and a bag of chips in CF last year. Well, if you care, there is a youtube clip of him in San Fran flying thru the air with the greatest of ease., making great catch after great catch. In a HUGE park…and now the talk of Bryant being so-so. Of course the former manager loved to run him out in the outfield a fair bit cuz…I honestly don’t know. Ruined their former catcher playing LF KYLE SCHWARBER….it’s stupid, you don’t need to do that with the best players, and….fewer reps in games can only make you worse, right/?
Kris Bryant was the MVP in 2016, and if last year was an off year, .282, 382 and 31 HR’s isn’t bad…
but, like Gil said, Riley might do that….but, I just don’t think the cubs have a 3rd baseman, so I see no reason why they would make a trade without getting Riley back.
As for Nolan? Well, If every highly paid pundit can say for months that Joe Biden was a mortal lock to be the Dem Nominee for President, then I can say there is no way the Braves trade for him.
AA is a fraidy cat when it comes to paying someone a lot of money over many seasons…and the braves wouldn’t let him spend that money anyways…how can I know that? well….A.A said this a few weeks ago on the Athletic site…

V’s fav Jeff Schultz doing the interviewing…

You’re given an annual budget, right?

    Correct.

I know you’re not going to tell me what that number is.

    Right.

But the idea is you want to leave yourself money not just for the rest of the roster but for later in the season, right?

I’ve been pretty candid about that. Things happen over the course of the year. I guarantee you the Dodgers in 2018 did not expect to be trading for Manny Machado. We didn’t go into last season thinking we’d have to add three back-end bullpen guys (at the trade deadline). The same way with our rotation: We didn’t expect three-fifths of the rotation would blow up on us. So, you know things are going to come up. I’ve said this two years in a row: I’ve gone to (CEO) Terry McGuirk at the trade deadline with not a lot of time left, needed more money, and I was given a quick yes. Our payroll number was $120 million in 2018 and $140 million in 2019, and we went beyond that both times.

so, Bryant would surely put us well past last years deal (18 mil per year) and Nolan is making 35 Million this year!!! so, Bryant? maybe, since it’s only 2 years. but like V said, FF comes into play soon too, and if 23 Mil for 4 years for JD was going to be an issue, what would 35 mil a year for 5 more seasons (then 32 mil, then 27 mil) going to do to the chances of keeping F.F????

Lets run with Riley/Johan and see what happens. Riley turns 23 in April
It’s funny, everyone was more than willing to give Dansby MANY chances to be the everyday shortstop, even though he his .232/312 in his age 23 season, and then .238/.304 in his age 24 season! He hit .251/325 last year.
Neither Riley nor Camargo would have any regular position nailed down with those numbers…oh well….

First, Ber, you are not being a contrarian. You are contributing to the discussion. And it seems most of us are in agreement that we do not want Kris Bryant here for any significant cost. (On the other hand, most Cubs fans believe they will get an overpay for KB. I can tell you 100% that will not happen from Ninja GM.)

I think most people that follow the Braves closely have NOT given up on Austin Riley. The shallow, stat-gazing “fans” may have already written him off, but anyone who actually pays attention understands he is still a very promising young player who has a great chance to be an All-Star sooner than later. I do not personally know anyone who wants to package him up and shuffle him off to anyone. Really, the only question in my mind is when he takes over at 3B full time. I’m setting the over/under at May 1, roughly 3 weeks into the Gwinnett season. He can tear spring pitchers a new one, and it’s still not the same as consistent success in real games. About 3 weeks of punishing AAA pitchers again should be enough.

Now… just to be clear, I will not read one letter of anything Jeff Schultz writes. His entire career is built on writing “click bait”. He does exactly what has been alluded to above – writes negative garbage prompting someone to run around as if the sky is falling in hopes that he’ll be quoted somewhere. He’s a no talent hack that wouldn’t accurately report a fact if it bit him on his oversized ego. Jesus could appear in the eastern sky and Schultz would write that climate disruption is accelerating the end of the earth. He reminds me of a petulant child who has never been shown any discipline who will do anything for attention. Example? He’s now out beating the drum (pun fully intended) for the Braves to stop showing insensitivity by their condoning of the “demeaning” (his word, not mine) Tomahawk Chop. In fact, he’s calling for the team to drop the tomahawk altogether. I’m calling for the sports world to drop Jeff Schultz altogether. My only balm from him is Preparation H. Only in the world of some disillusioned aging hippie can any reference to a fearless warrior be construed as insulting. Perhaps he would like the local team to change their name to the Atlanta Participation Trophies? Maybe the Atlanta Juice Boxes? The Atlanta Beanbag Chairs? The Atlanta Pacifiers? It really doesn’t matter. He is not capable of being happy about anything. Well, that may not be entirely true, but he’s certainly not capable of reporting it if it were to occur. That much is well documented over his long disappointing career.

So Vee, how about telling us how you really feel about Jeff Schultz… 🙂

On Riley, for about 6 weeks last summer, everyone was calling Austin “sliced bread”… Then reality caught up with him. Now that he knows what to expect, I truly believe he will make the adjustments necessary to become the heir apparent to Freddie Freeman. Yes, I have come to the conclusion he can be that good. Some players take a little more time to get their feet under them than others. Ber’s reference to Dansby was a good one.

We often forget how young these players are. Old Ber? I have grandkids older than half the team.. So there is that. 🙂

Anyhoo, the song “It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year” keeps ringing in my brain today.

I was always a big sports fan, not able to go to as much stuff as I would like to but still… How big of a Braves fan am I? Well, the Redskins have their summer camp here in Richmond every August. Have not bothered to drive the 20 minutes it would take to watch them. The Braves however, is 1200 miles really too far to think about driving to see the kids warm up? Okay, maybe but I am seriously thinking about teaming up with Gordon to drive down to Norfolk to see the Triple A team play the Tides who I think are the minor league franchise for Baltimore.

Okay, I am sure the pitchers are already whining about having to get back to work, secretly rubbing in the Ben Gay. Oh my God, just thinking about the two a days of high school football makes me groan….

The upshot here is that he’s automatically a minimum 3 weeks behind, not to mention that he’ll likely have to be brought along slowly once he’s released to begin throwing. It may be true that the “team doesn’t think it’s major”, but the affect it will have on this team is major… especially since the 5th starter slot is not even settled. As you all know, I am not a doomsayer, and typically default to the optimistic side. But I do not have a good feeling about this.

Why did I not think this would be a likely occurrence? I was afraid to post anything because I did not want to paint that devil on the wall. So, he will be starting about a month behind and probably not start for the Braves until May. Not trying to be a Debbie Downer but that is how these things go. The only thing a player like Hamels has to do is get in shape, He does not need to learn how to pitch nor learn a new one, just be able to throw the ball. Sigh….

The only name that immediately comes to mind to me is Ross Stripling, whom the Dodgers almost traded to Anaheim. That obviously makes him available. the RH’er has made 52 starts over 4 years with the Dodgers and has a 3.51 ERA for his career.

I wonder what the cost would be? Anaheim was sending a top ML-ready IF prospect for Stripling and Joc Pederson. What would Stripling cost by himself?

Doing some deeper reading on the Hamels injury, and from what I see, a return to throwing in 3 weeks (best case scenario) would allow him to make 4 spring starts prior to the regular season opener. One might assume you could slot him at #5 and his spot wouldn’t roll around until the season’s second week anyway.

    But not this season.

The Braves actually lift the lid with games on 7 straight days, all on the west coast.

The Braves need to pray for the “best case scenario” and that he can truly begin throwing in 3 weeks. When you take into consideration that he is a veteran that really only has to get in throwing shape as opposed to working on finer mechanics, 4 starts might be all he really needs. But I have to admit, I’m not optimistic…

Folty is not mincing any words. I do wonder how the Asterisks… er, I mean Astros will be received in baseball parks outside of Houston. Probably not with open arms? I bet the trash talking (not trash CAN talking… that’s what they were doing) will be fierce.

Speaking of Folty, does the focus now shift to him as the key to the season’s early success? I think it does. The Braves have to get the “Game 2” Folty as opposed to the “Game 5” Folty. (In fairness, if Freddie fields that 1 tough ground ball, the Braves likely escape the first inning of the fated Game 5 with just 1 run scored… but that’s water under the bridge now). But the “Game 2” Folty is what we have seen inside him since he joined this team. Hopefully the more mature Folty can finally exercise that massive potential for a whole season. The Braves need that now more than ever.

V, I saw either part of King Felix’s last start for Seattle, or MLBTV showed a longish clip of it…the dude was pitching his heart out, waving his arms to get the fans cheering louder, but…he just didn’t have it.
Now, if he got together with Anibal Sanchez during the offseason, and could figure out a way to get his “fastball” to move and dart, then his slider/split that’s still good might play….but, it’s that fastball that lost 5-7 MPH that is why he isn’t the superstar starter he used to be…

I honestly think we have plenty of in house options to replace Cole for April. Besides, don’t teams not need (blog first? :/ ) a 5th starter in April????

Good morning all, so today I will have at least a little something to occupy my sports Jones as the NASCAR season reboots. The twin duels crank up to determine starting positions as teams try to work out the kinks after their 2 month lay-off.

As for baseball, well, more stretching and long toss plus interview opportunities. The down side for the players is they can’t (for the family guys) ship their brood off to Disney World for the day. On the bright side, it is not all that far across Alligator Alley to Miami Beach.

I read a “fan” comment yesterday to a Q&A basically stating the Braves would finish 4th in the division because they did not fill their 3B hole and do not have a closer.

    ???

Johan Camargo, Austin Riley, Chris Martin, Shane Greene, Mark Melancon, and Will Smith might all dispute that assertion.

Uh… maybe a little biased? Then again, it’s a pretty good lineup if everybody performs. Dansby has to Dans, Folty has to Folt, Ender has to reappear, and somebody has to emerge as the 5th starter. Then it’s a pretty good roster.

The Astros did a poor job of “apologizing” for being cheaters this morning at a press conference called by owner Jim Crane. Apparently it was called so that Crane could make a feeble attempt to distance himself from any controversy and pin the whole thing on fired GM Jeff Luhnow and fired and manager AJ Hinch. He even trotted out a rather pathetic Dusty Baker to make an apology on behalf of the team Baker just took over knowing that if anyone tried to challenge it that they’d be immediately labeled as a hater, ageist and racist.

    Weak.

While Crane wants the Astros to be able to put this behind them and move forward, he really only took an already bad situation and made it worse. If anything, his feeble excuses made his players look even worse. (Alex Bregman’s own apology was no better, blaming the organization and team before himself. They are so clueless. They have no concept of personal responsibility.) Crane says his opinion is that the cheating didn’t impact the game. Keep telling yourself, that, Jimmy. Keep telling yourself that. One day you might even believe it. We won’t, though.

In America, we tend to want to forgive people who are honest and remorseful in apology. But he Astros seem to want to deflect and defer responsibility only on Luhnow and Hinch, and move on with their own happy lives. It’s shameful. No forgiveness for them. And no respect, either. They used to be my favorite AL team. Now they are the lowest heel.

Red Sox beat writer Pete Abraham put it this way: “The Astros method could help you out of a lot of jams in everyday life. Let’s say you forget Valentine’s Day. ‘I’ll make this brief. I’m sorry, but I don’t think this impacted our relationship and we should move on. Thank you.’

Too early to poo poo that deal. I still believe he’ll give us quality, meaningful innings in 2020. He’s not the first guy to aggregate his shoulder performing an offseason exercise causing a delay to the start of his season – see Mike Soroka, 2019.

And even if he misses 3-4 starts at the season’s beginning. he’ll be that much fresher at season’s end. This is not a major blow to our team. To the contrary, this gives a better opportunity for the glut of youngsters we have to prove they can perform on the big stage. Gotta get to the big stage to show you can handle the big stage. I see it as a showcase for the best commodities in the portfolio to show their goods. We all must recognize that these top young pitching prospects are reaching the peak of their value, and they’ve reached the point where they must either contribute or be used in trade. Otherwise, they begin to rot on the vine.

I had to turn off the MLB network this morning. All about the Astros and the sign stealing. Okay, move on, there has to be something else to talk about. It is a game and players cheat until they can’t. It is why the have umpires. Not like some one called a 225 foot fly ball an infield fly or allowed an infielder to actually pick a player up to get an out or allow a fan to reach over the fence to interfere with an outfielder from catching a fly ball.

Hey, I love having the technology to get a play right but methinks they have gone a bit overboard with it. If you have to look at a play from 6 directions and take 5 minutes looking at film frame by frame to make a call, well, let the play stand as called on the field by the guy you expect to make it in a nano second.

We have all seen some awful calls allowed to stand but that is baseball. The only reason people are up in arms is because the bookies are in an uproar. Take the money out of the equation and there you go, story is over. All these pundits appear to have forgotten that a lot of records have been set using PEDs. Think kids don’t see that and say, well, the reward is worth the risk? They didn’t take Ryan Braun’s MVP award away yet have they?

Think about this, the only infraction which has resulted in a lifetime ban from the game has been gambling. Yes, mess with the bookie’s money will get you the “dealth” penalty. Beat up your wife, use dope, steal the oother side’s playbook will earn you a very stiff talking to and a time out…

So lets talk about things that really matter. Which rookie will break thru this spring? Who will be the first player to go on the DL with a Lat strain? Will Hammel’s arm fall off?

Which rookie will break thru this spring?

Cristian Pache will push for a roster spot right out of camp. But it will be Drew Waters that turns heads because he’s been hiding a bit in Pache’s shadow. Not this year. Folks will begin to discover the beauty of that swing (from both sides of the plate) and begin to see the kid’s high potential.

Who will be the first player to go on the DL with a Lat strain?

Shhhhhh! We do mot even utter such. Bad juju.

    Will Hammel’s arm fall off?

Cole Hamels has throughout his career taken as good of care to his arm and body as any pitcher in the game. His workout regimens are well documented. His arm is healthy, just experiencing a strain.

On the topic of pitcher injuries early in camp, here’s one that no manager wants to hear…

Young Gabe Burns, Braves beat writer for the ajc, says that Felix Hernandez reported to camp with a “clean bill of health”. Now… how do you interpret that? Has the last 4 years been the result of injury and ill health? Or has he simply pitched all the good pitches out of his arm by being overused in his first 11 spectacular years?

I know this is a reach, but what if… just what if Felix Hernandez could actually be a version of his former self in 2020? He could be a huge factor in the NL East race (and beyond) if so.

Pipe dream, I know. But not out of the realm of possibility.

Thus far, in pictures or reports, one can determine that early arrivers among position players include RAJ, Ozzie, Johan, Riley and Ender. No real surprises among that group. All hard workers. Johan, Riles and Ender all have something to prove this spring as well. If Ender can stay healthy and avoid hamstring issues, and if he can avoid his annual slow start, he could be a major key to making the lineup click. Otherwise Snit could be forced to play Nick more than any of us are comfortable with. Remember, this roster is not long on LH hitters, especially among regulars.

“He was the best prospect I ever saw,” said former Braves reliever Eric O’Flaherty, who has known Hernández since 2003, when both were Mariners minor leaguers.

That was the same year Hernández got the nickname “King Félix” while dominating as a 17-year-old in Single-A ball. This was only weeks after O’Flaherty had seen him for the first time that summer when both were still at the Mariners’ minor-league camp awaiting team assignments. O’Flaherty had just been drafted in the sixth round out of Walla Walla (Wash.) High School and Hernández had signed the previous summer as a sought-after 16-year-old free agent in Venezuela.

“I saw him pitch my first day in pro ball and called my dad that night and said, ‘I’m not going to be in this league very long,’” O’Flaherty said, chuckling as he told the story. “This was extended (spring training) before they broke for Everett. He was going to Everett to play in the short season. He was 17 at the time. So your first day, you do your physicals and all that stuff, and then you just go sit in the bleachers and watch the game. So I’m sitting behind home plate. There’s no fans there, it’s just rookie ball. And I’m like, ‘Let me see what these pro-ball guys are doing.’ And I start watching the game, and there’s a (radar) gun right in front of you because they’re doing the chart and everything. And this skinny guy is throwing 96, 97, 98 and with a hammer curveball. And guys are swinging and missing his curveball.

“I mean, it’s in the dirt, and they’re swinging chest-high. I don’t know who this guy is, but if this is what they’re doing in pro ball, I’m going home within a couple of months because I have nothing like this going on. So I just watched, and it blew me away because I’d never seen anything like what he was throwing up there. So after the game, I asked some guys, you know, ‘Is that guy pretty good?’ And they’re like, ‘Is he pretty good? He’s probably going to be the best prospect in baseball in a couple of years.’

“And luckily the next day I watched a rookie-ball game, and they were throwing it off the backstop and giving up homers. It turned back into the regular shit show that rookie ball is. But that first glimpse of it, I was like, ‘Dude, I’ve got no shot here, watching Felix.’” Eric O’Flaherty speaking on King Felix, The Athletic 2/14/20

Why I love watching minor league guys, you can pick out the stars pretty quick methinks…

Good morning Stuffville… All players required to report by today, sorry, but I am still not excited yet. I must be getting old. I am trying to remind myself that a “yuge” signing does not always translate into a World Series trophy. Picking up Hamels does not carry the same impact that snagging Greg Maddux did. That is what Washington pulled off when they picked up Scherzer but I digress.

So, we anxiously await the emergence of our next great phenom. Is there a Roy Hobbs among the crop of prospects? In a sport where a failure rate of only 70% is considered All-Star worthy, it is a game which is incredibly hard and you have nerds somehow making it even harder. Who would have thunk it?

Early reports on youngster Bryce Ball say that the Braves may have picked up a real steal in the 24th round of last year’s draft. This guy has prodigious “light tower” power. The downside is that the 6’6″ 235 lb.-er really only plays 1B. That said, by the time the Dallas Baptist University product is ready for The Show, there will likely be a DH in the NL. The Braves appear to have planted the seed of a home grown one.

I’m not so sure it’ll be for Arenado, especially since 25% of his remaining control will be used up by then. But I do expect AA to swing a big deal.

I’m betting it’ll for a big name pitcher. But I also won’t count out one more possibility…

Old buddy Andrelton Simmons is in the last year of his deal, and the Halos could very easily try to send him back to the Dirty South for some pitching and a younger, cheap and controllable SS. Can you imagine him paired with Ozzie up the middle? Now that’s not a shot at Dansby by any stretch. But there’s only one Simba, and he’s still only 30 years old. And if the Angels fall back early in a tough AL West division (Asterisks, A’s, Rangers), they might look to the future.

I saw someone comment that “Drew Waters is Jordan Schafer but actually talented.” That’s a cold shot at Schafer, but probably close to true. Schafer really did have talent, though. Sadly, he could never made it back to 100% after damaging his wrist crashing against the OF wall early in his rookie season. A handful of organizations and more injuries later, he tried a comeback with the Cards as a pitcher, then tore his UCL. Apparently it was simply not in the “cards” for him. We see him all the time, but the national media collective is taken aback that the normally quiet and reserved Markakis, “who never says anything”, has teed off so angrily toward the Astros and toward the commissioner.

I was greatly relieve to read that NASCAR driver Ryan Newman was not fatally injured in a horrific crash at the end of the Daytona 500 yesterday. It was as bad a crash as I have seen in my many years of watching motor sports. I had memories of Dale Earnhardt’s fatal crash 19 years ago although at that time I did not think Dale’s crash was all that serious. I am of the opinion that far too many people take for granted how quickly things can change for an athlete. Little news has been release as to Newman’s actual injuries other than they are serious but not life threatening. I pray they are not career ending but after seeing video of the crash repeatedly I would find it understandable if he hung it up like Carl Edwards surprisingly did after an equally horrific crash in 2016.

Now more baseball… When Markais speaks, his words are weighty because he is a man of few words. Quality over quantity methinks.

So, maybe the organization will shell out a little more money for scouts who can put boots on the ground, I read somewhere that AA had cut back on that aspect but you need eyes on those kids like Acuna and Albies as well as the superstar college kids who get all the hype.

I wrote a post about this last night, but my internet crapped out of course when I posted it….just really annoys me. Was there someone that would work for 20k less? Or does the new girl know someone at Fox? (I see she isn’t from here, but lives here….hmmmm)
I just liked Kelsey Wingert. She was raw at first, but you can tell she really studied to get better, and didn’t ask dumb questions like most blonde (or brunette) sideline reporters. She was just good, worked well with the other broadcasters and I for one, was comfortable with her . She really liked the braves players and vise-versa
Now, someone who was with the cubs for 6 years joins up…so no ties to the team, and will no doubt overcompensate in rooting for the team. And will have trouble with players names. Wee!
guess my mute button will get a workout

There is always more to the story than is revealed to us. A company like Fox Sports South (owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group under its subsidiary Diamond Sports Group) doesn’t rise to its position within the industry by making flip decisions on a whim.

And as I said, I like Wingert. But we do not need to weep for her. She has the talent, smarts and looks to go far in broadcasting. This could absolutely be a blessing for her in the long run. Don’t be surprised to see her show up on the 4-letter network.

Funny thing is, when Wingert came on board she replaced a girl that I really liked; and I was hesitant to embrace her as the new sideline reporter. Now I can’t even remember who that other reporter was.

I wish Kelly Crull the best of luck here in Atlanta, and I hope people won’t treat her harshly in Wingert’s shadow. She’s just the employee trying to do her job.

Having Hulu, there are alot of sports that are available from time to time. Who knows? I may have some spring games that I can access. And the real upside to that is I can access it on my side computer here as I work.

      Win/win.

With the first spring game just hours away now, I’m going to make a few predictions that I believe will come true before Opening Day in just 34 days:

Mike Soroka will go north as the clear #1, but Max Fried will only be a step behind him. Those homegrown hurlers will be a young 1-2 punch that will have all of baseball buzzing all summer.

Folty will be more consistent, and not only seize the #3 slot, but will fill alot of the regular season innings that Julio left behind. I’m predicting a solid 190+ inning season from him.

Sean Newcomb will make the rotation out of spring, but he’s going to be the guy on the bubble when Cole Hamels is healthy because…

Kyle Wright is going to show in spring that he’s ready for The Show.

Bryse Wilson will be traded before spring ends.

Felix is a great guy and a great story, but the wear on his arm and shoulder are real and inescapable.

Thus the rotation will be: Soroka, Fried, Folty, Newk and Wright.

There will be no real surprises in the bullpen, with the possible exception of a healthy Jacob Webb making the group. But is that a surprise? Not to anyone who watched him pitch last season.

And I think there could be a battle for the final spot between LH Grant Dayton and LH Tucker Davidson. I’m giving it to Dayton only because I think the organization may prefer to keep Davidson stretched out as a starter.

Thus the bullpen will be: Melancon, Smith (L), Greene, Martin, Jackson, Webb, O’Day, Dayton (L)

Austin Riley will be the Opening Day 3B. This kid is good, and I have never wavered over the fact that I think he’s going to be a star for a long time. And that journey will begin on March 26.

Because Riley makes the team, Adam Duvall will be traded before spring ends. The team is already RH heavy, and Duvall’s bat will bring back a speedier more defensive minded LH reserve OF’er. Think along the lines of Mallex Smith. (The M’s need another power bat to help mitigate the loss of Mitch Haniger to injury.)

Ender will make the Opening Day squad, but will be pushed by Cristian Pache from Day 1. Pache will be the everyday CF before the season is over.

The everyday lineup is quite predictable: Ronnie, Ozzie, Freddie, Marcell, Riley, d’Arnaud, Ender, Dansby

Because Riley makes the team as the everyday 3B, Johan goes back to being the super-sub, but sadly that rolls Charlie out of a job. He’ll be let go early enough in spring to latch on elsewhere. There will not be a shortage of suitors.

Nick will be just as professional a player in his new bench role, and will provide great value there.

The bench will be: Flow (R), Johan (S), Nick (L), Hechy (R), and the speedier more defensive minded LH reserve OF’er to be determined via trade.

So, got a chance to watch yesterday’s game this morning on MLB. I was most interested in seeing how the pitching was shaping up. Despite the shutout, I would rate it a C. Okay, a C-Plus because it was after all a shutout but they were throwing against minor leaguers. Pretty much expect the same today against the Tiger’s split squad.

I did see some positives on the pitching front. King Felix did not allow any hard hit balls. I think he could be pretty effective if he embraced a 91 mph cutter. His other breaking stuff really moved, not he has to understand he cannot get away with a laser straight 91 mph fast ball.

I liked the kid Pfiffer, Sobotka still has trouble throwing strikes which is a shame. He can really bring it.

In the field, I was reminded of what a cannon of an arm Camargo has. I also like Lagaliers.

Big Kyle Muller had a bad case of nerves in his debut yesterday… walking a batter, hitting two, and letting loose a wild pitch. Then, as Snit described, “He relaxed and started breathing.” 😆 Yeah, breathing is probably a good idea. This is a kid with a big arm and 3 ML quality pitches. He just needs time to gain consistency, as most kids do. Oh, and learn to breathe.

I would like to see a group picture with Kyle Muller (6’6″/225), Bryce Ball (6’6″/235), Ozzie Albies (5’8″/165), and Trey Harris (5’8″/215). That would be pretty funny…

Vee, You give a good example of why spring training games me jack squat in the standings. It is where kids get the opportunity to show their mettle or not. It is why so many rookies choke. Experience is only gained by doing.
Now, that is not to say I don’t want my team to win every game, just that I am not going to jump off the roof when they lose.

Besides, if pitchers don’t give up some batted balls, how are the infielders and outfielders going to get reps too and show what they have got?

So, up I-75 to Dunedin to face the Blue Jays today. Max Fried takes the mound for the first time this spring. Max Sororka “tweeked” a groin muscle throwing batting practice so the Braves are going to give him a few days. I have tweeked a groin or two and it is no fun. Try walking when you right groin and your left hammy are barking at the same time… You pray you neither have to climb or descend any steps. Also makes you wonder why you bought a truck with a straight drive transmission.

Listened to DOB on 755 is real this AM. He was talking to a defensive stats geek on how defensive runs saved were computed. Meh!

However, a couple of things I agree with he and O’Flarety on:
    1. It was a bad decision to trade away Simba. Still one of the best shortstops to ever wear the Tomahawk.
    2. Freddie Freeman is very underrated by other baseball nerds and is likely the key to Atlanta’s chance to win a World Series.
    3. While Josh Donaldson played third base defense at a very high level, if Johan plays to his ability, their will be little drop off defensive runs saved at third base this season.
    4. While Acuna is still only average in center, he is an All-Star in right field. It is his natural position.
    5. Ender may or may not make it to the end of the season as a Brave.
    6. King Felix looked really good in his debut this spring. He projected a real mound presence and could be another “find” for the Braves if he keeps it up. FYI from O’Flarety, the union will not allow a seasoned player like Felix to sign a contract for less than a million dollars no matter.
    7. With Hamels unlikely to make an appearance before May, there are two starting pitcher slot open this spring.

MLB is airing today’s game against the O’s. Will likely as not be blacked out here and in Atlanta but no matter because here at least, they will be available on the local sports network. MASN…

1 – HAMELS and shoulder in the same conversation is a bad road ahead.
Main reason I was not jumping for joy about his arrival.
2 – King FELIX is a mighty thin reed to lean on in the four slot, but if he is steady over the first half of the season, HAMELS might be back by the All-Star break.
3 – One of the young arms has to step up, or AA will be forced to pull the trigger on that arm-trade we expected all off-season.
4 – I’d rather see how CAMARGO and RILEY fare early, and pull off an ARENADO deal if they don’t pan out.
Not putting that thought in the rear0view just yet.
5 – Can’t wait for CRISTIAN PACHE in center field.
Several years ago, i was saying ACUNA’s stats suggested he was a corner OF’er.
Looks like that’s being borne out.
6 – GIL, it’s time to gather the clans for a summit on all things BRAVES.
7 – GIL, June’s not that far away, we gotta’ start planning a DANVILLE trip to see the rookies.
      Last shot at it.

More Bryce Ball info, courtesy of Seth Carter at Tomahawk Take:

Last year as a junior at Dallas Baptist University he led the Missouri Valley Conference in home runs and RBI and was named a third-team All-American.

He was drafted in the 24th-round due to questions about his signability. It wasn’t clear if he would return for his senior season or make the jump to professional baseball.

The Braves got a steal as Ball was sent to Rookie Ball and made his way to Low-A before the end of the season.

In 2019 Ball played in 125 games between college, Rome, and Danville. Between the NCAA and pro leagues, he smashed 35 homers and 106 RBI while slashing .327/.420/.621.

If anyone was concerned his skills wouldn’t translate from the Missouri Valley Conference to professional baseball, he posted an OPS of 1.057 in the MVC last season and a 1.023 OPS in the minors.

His slugging percentage increased from a .614 in his junior year to a .628 between the two professional leagues.

Even if he were to start this season at high-A Florida, he still probably wouldn’t be on track for Atlanta until 2023… 2022 at the earliest. Why is that significant? Well, the current CBA is set to expire after the 2021 season. You can almost bet your last centavo that the owners will use the universal DH as a bargaining chip in negotiations. There will be a DH in the NL in 2022. It’s inevitable. And we have a guy that just might be ready to move into the role.

I remember reading somewhere I think about 20 years ago, maybe longer, that MLB teams wanted a prospect to accrue at least 500 plate appearances in the minors before they would consider promoting them to the Show. I doubt that has changed all that much in the last two decades.

I see baseball moving in a direction where there will be more Aaron Judges and fewer Muggsy Bogues signed to play in the Bigs. Still, it is great when a kid makes good in the majors while defying conventional thinking.

Many forget that Weigel was literally about to be called up to Atlanta in 2017 when he suffered the elbow injury. Fully recovered, he’s back to the form that almost earned him that first callup. Big Pat stands at 6’6″/220 lbs. and throws a heavy downhill sinking fastball. But his secondary pitches are not as strong, and he waffles between a slider and traditional curve “depending on which one feels better”. The Braves would prefer he concentrate on the slider and work as a more typical fastball/slider pitcher, with his future most likely out of the bullpen. He has the makeup of a solid late inning shut down reliever if he can hone his slider.

1, Folty does not yet look ready for Prime Time, thankfully, there is still a month to prepare.
2, Kyle Wright on the other hand looks great, the best I have seen so far.
3, Acuna is trying to hit 1/2 of his 50 homers in spring training and is a race with Ozuna to see which can go 0 fer spring.
    4, Ozzie looks great.
5, I am glad it is still spring training

This is Kyle Wright’s year. He struggled with consistency early last year, but after making some subtle mechanical tweaks he seemingly turned the corner in August and September, even coming up for 3 effective relief appearances in Atlanta.

The thing with Wright has always been that he has tremendous secondary pitches to an outstanding fastball, but like almost all minor league pitchers he struggles to spot the fastball consistently. That lead him to “aiming” it which resulted in a loss of movement. His mechanical adjustments have given him a more repeatable release point and thus more control. And once he gets the fastball dialed in, he gets a ton of swings and misses off the other 3 pitches.

He’s still considered a potential top-of-the-rotation pitcher and looks ready to take a big step forward.

well…. ” Still No Timetable For Cole Hamels

By Jeff Todd | March 2, 2020 at 3:50pm CDT

It has now been nearly three weeks since news emerged that Braves starter Cole Hamels wouldn’t be ready to report to Spring Training on time due to some shoulder irritation. There’s still no timeline in place for him to get back to action, manager Brian Snitker said today, as David O’Brien of The Athletic reports on Twitter.

There is some evidence of progress, it seems, but the update largely confirms that the Atlanta organization is going to endure a fairly lengthy stretch without the veteran southpaw. A recent medical exam — held, as promised, three weeks after the initial concern arose — revealed that Hamels’s shoulder has improved but that he’s still not ready to resume throwing.

There really isn’t much to go off of here in assessing the situation. The Braves haven’t given much indication of just what Hamels is dealing with, so there’s no context to work with. It isn’t clear when Hamels will go in for another check-up, either. Presumably, he won’t pick up a ball until he receives clearance.

What is clear is that Hamels is certain to miss the start of the season — and not just the minimum 15 days. (Yes, the 15-day IL is back for pitchers.) Even if Hamels is cleared to throw in a week’s time and doesn’t experience further issues, he’d be about a month behind the regular ramp-up schedule and wouldn’t have a chance to tune up in Spring Training competition…..

Key phrase there: There really isn’t much to go off of here in assessing the situation.

But the beat writers are obligated to write something, so they write something. Rather than speculate, let’s look at the situation from what we do know…

Hamels will surely miss the start of the season. That will leave an additional rotation slot open for a minimum 3 weeks, heading toward 4 weeks or the first month That should equate to 30 days, or 6 turns of the rotation. And with the occasional of-day thrown in, that spot could conceivably (if necessary) be skipped twice. So we are looking at a minimum of 4 starts missed.

Fortunately for the Braves, their surplus is starting pitching at the upper minors, not to mention the surprising success of King Felix thus far. Between Felix, Newk, Wright, Wilson, and I’ll even toss in the long shot Ian Anderson, they can cover the 4th spot, and they can fill in the 5th spot for 4 or 5 or more starts as necessary. Regardless of when he joins the rotation, he’ll provide a boost to an already talented, if young, group.

And the silver lining to this dark cloud is that there will that many fewer innings on Hamels’ left arm in September and October, when his experience and mental toughness will really be important.

      Speaking of which…

You know who I am more concerned about than Hamels? I’m more concerned over Folty. He might have been oddly shaking his arm the other night, but it’s starting to look like it’s his head that might need shaking. There’s never been any question about his physical talent. I am beginning to move to the camp that believes this guy will never realize his great potential. He may personify the old cliche about “10 cent head”. If you are taking bets now on whose rotation spot Ian Anderson will take mid-season, Folty’s is a good place to start.

Snit continues to indicate that the team will not open the season with both Camargo and Riley on the active roster. If Riley continues to garner hard contact, as he’s done consistently thus far, Snit may have to walk that back. You know whose his swing Riley’s reminds me of? Pat Burrell. Short and compact, always hitting the ball hard somewhere even if right at someone.

This is my big gripe with the DH. While I am resigned to the fact that it’s inevitable for the NL, to observe that a guy can “play” for 5 more years is just a fallacy. He can step to the plate 4 times a night for 5 more years, maybe. But he cannot “play” the sport for 5 more years. And the DH does not belong in the HOF either. Not Edgar Martinez, and not Big Papi. There… I said it. Was Edgar Martinez a better baseball player than Fred McGriff? #3!! no he wasn’t.

King Felix takes the mound today in his 1st start. To me, this one is important. It’s hard to gauge any player in spring at any point, really, but for a pitcher we can measure how far Felix can go. I feel Felix needs to go 3 strong today… at the least. I’d really like to see more, but I’ll take 3. Also, aside from the length of the outing, adding a 3rd positive start to the other 2 would at the very least indicate that the physical ability isn’t too eroded. It would also have to boost his confidence. Long live the King!

A healthy and effective Minter would be huge for our bullpen, not to mention the rotation. Newk has looked good as a starter, but you know there is still an undercurrent of needing his LH arm in the pen. Minter could mitigate that if he can come back to his 2017-2018 form.

Today’s game was on ESPeeU and for a change, it was a really enjoyable broadcast. Chipper was in the booth and Freddie was miked up. It was hilarious. It made you feel like you were on the bench listening at those two go at it. Best moment was Freddie going first to home on a dying quail by Ozuna and Freddie huffing and puffing around the bases and being winded still after the third out.

Positives, some well struck balls by Acuna and a line drive homer by Riley and his making a nice play on a alow roller to his left.

Wright looked good until the third inning and I think he got a little tired.

Matzek looked sharp again coming in in relief of Wright with the bases loaded and one out and striking out the two batters he faced.

Martin also looked stellar and Shane Green pitched two solid innings also. Nunn and Davidson will be back in the minors next week bit that is why you play these kids so you can give them experience and be able to see what the have got.

Stellar performance turned in by Folty yesterday. Reason? I guess he got the message that while everyone says spring training is time to get into shape and stats don’t matter, they really mean, not really… Stop sleep walking thru your performances and show us what you got…

I am so reminded of the great line from “North Dallas Forty” when Lyle Alsato’s character says; “How come every time I call it a game, you call it a business and when I call it a business you call it a game?”

So, here is a question for everyone in Stuffville: If a game is played and there is no TV coverage, did that game really happen? Asking for a friend…

Stellar performance turned in by Folty yesterday.

Well, according to Folty, “I threw a lot of good sliders. My arm just has to get ready for it somehow. It’s a good time to do it right now.”

What? You are just now getting your arm ready to throw the pitch that actually makes you half decent? Maybe you could have been a little more diligent in your preparation prior to showing up for your job?

Here’s a little more Folty, “My first two [starts] I was maybe too relaxed out there, But now, you start to get that mental focus and just start attacking guys and treat it like a regular season game.”

Maybe try not lollygagging around on the job. Maybe look toward a more seasoned guy like Mike Soroka as an example. Oh wait…

Speaking of the rotation, it would appear that Sean Newcomb actually did prepare himself to compete for a rotation spot, and that he probably locked one up after Saturday’s start. I do not think he has been lollygagging through any of his starts. That’s a guy I can root for. At the moment, I’m rooting for Folty to have another good outing and build some trade value.

Obviously it’s still a little early to speculate on the Opening Day (week) rotation. But as things stand, the best 5 starters have been Soroka, Fried, Wright, Newk and King Felix. The numbers game will probably send Wright back to AAA to open the season, but he’s done everything right to win a spot. It would appear that he came in fully prepared to compete and to not lollygag through any starts.

I despise lazy talent. I really do.

I have to agree, a guy with talent is usually able to be a “good” player just on talent alone. The same as a guy who does not have talent but works really hard to hone what he has. A guy who has talent but works really hard to get better is what it takes to be a great player.

Pete Rose is my go to guy on someone who lacked talent but worked really hard to be a good player. PS: I still think he belongs in the Hall of Fame if guys like Bonds and Clemens get in. Just saying…

Speaking of underwhelming, Ender, who missed time recently do to “dehydration” (really, pro athlete?), is not doing anything this spring to inspire me to let up on him any from being my favorite whipping boy. [Note: Folty is trying to overtake Ender in that department, and that’s not a good thing for either player.] Thus far in spring, Ender is hitting .200 and slugging .200. The only redeeming thing about him thus far is that he’s a LH bat, something the lineup is lacking… especially if Austin Riley wins the 3B job.

I wonder if we can package Ender and Folty and come up with a serviceable LH CF on a short deal?

Am I wrong to keep beating the drum on the RH heavy lineup?

As projected, the starting lineup looks to be something like this on Opening Day:

    Ronald (R)
    Ozzie
    Freddie
    Marcell (R)
    Johan
    d’Arnaud (R)
    Ender
    Dans (R)

That’s perfectly balanced. But what about when Pache and Riley take over their respective positions, which will come sooner than later?

    Ronald (R)
    Ozzie
    Freddie
    Marcell (R)
    Riley (R)
    d’Arnaud (R)
    Dans (R)
    Pache (R)

Then we will have an issue, right? And considering that the average of RH/LH starting pitchers in the ML is 61%/39%, that’s something that cannot be masked.

V, a teeny, tiny defense of Folty (and I have trashed him in the past, I remember seeing Smoltz with a group of pitchers, back when the team really stunk-showed this during a game and I just did not see Folty in the group of guys watching while Smoltz showed landing/grips on pitches)
but it makes little sense to pitch 90-100% like I see some guys doing, out of the gate. Like Nate Evaldoi (SP) hitting 100 out of the box. With all his arm troubles? Likely will go on DL in April, or May…
thats it though, it’s time to pitch, and think son!

Ok, here’s a controversial point I’m gonna make. Player X hit .251/325 last year. So for, in 10 games, 24 ab’s he has no homers, 2 RBI’s .250 BA, and 1 whole walk. Player X seems safe to start this year.
meanwhile, player Y had a sucky year last year, but has a good track record and has 1 HR 5 Rbi’s is hitting .303/333.
both players are 26. Why is player X, who I assume you all figured out is Dansby , not having to worry he will get sent to AAA, but player Y, is having to worry about AAA, and likely will go down???

Oh, just thought to compare career numbers….

    Johan’s career numbers? 937 ab’s .269 .328
    Dansby? 1578 ab’s .245 .318

Johan is no longer a SS. He no longer has the range he did as a skinny kid coming up in the minors. That’s why Hecheverria is on the roster. And there is not a SS in the system even close to making a contribution at the ML level. Not even close. Braden Shewmake might be considered fairly close, but he and Johan profile very similar defensively. Pete Kozma is a retread that is really just AAA filler. Riley Delgado at AA is a slick fielder, but will probably never hit at the ML level. Beau Philip is the closest thing the Braves have to a real prospect at SS, and he was just drafted last year and is headed for another year in single-A ball.

Now, as far as Dansby is concerned, he has yet to have a fully healthy season. But that fact aside, this is the year he has to prove he belongs on a championship contending team. This is it.

      why not CF?

The simple answer is that Johan is slow.

In 2019, he had the slowest sprint speed of all major league SS at 25.6 feet/second. (Which, as we mentioned above, is why he’s no longer a SS.) Statcast lists the sprint speed of all ML CF’ers for 2019, and Johan does not even rank in the top 76, all that are listed. FWIW, the #76 player listed is Odubel Herrera at 26.7 f/s. League average is 27 f/s.

      More fun with numbers…

In 2019, among the Braves’ position players, Johan’s sprint speed only outpaced Tyler Flowers (25.2 f/s), Francisco Cervelli (25.2 f/s) and Brian McCann (22.2 f/s).

    Bold prediction time…

With just a tad over 2 weeks before the boys of summer kick this thing off for real, teams will begin to tweak their lineups in an effort to address remaining needs not answered in camp. At the same time, there will be players that are cut loose simply because there is no spot for them on the current team and/or they have no minor league options left.

Here is what I think the Braves will do, what they might do, and what they could do:

I think they will pick up another catcher, one with ML experience that they can stash at AAA. Currently, only Alex Jackson is ready to be summoned in the even of injury to either d’Arnaud or Flow. I can’t see that remaining as is.

    I think they will

    I think they will

        OK… to finish my thoughts…

I think they will trade or release Yonder Alonzo. He’s had a pretty good spring, but the Braves do not have a place for him without a DH. While it’s possible he could find a bench role, it’s not probable. He would be pretty limited and the Braves typically do not roll that way. I am sure there is a clause in his contract that has an opt-out date anyway.

I think they will trade some pitching. As we’ve said over and over, we are at the point where some of these fruits will begin to rot on the vine. We have to cash in or lose value. It will not include Kyle Wright or Ian Anderson, but every other hurler is fair game.

I think they might trade an excess position player, such as Adam Duvall or even Johan Camargo. If Riley wins the 3B job, Johan could be packaged with a pitcher to address another need. I can’t see him being sent down to AAA, and he doesn’t give you as much versatility as Charlie Culberson does, who can effectively play every position on the field except CF and C. And honestly, CC could play either of those in an emergency.

Keep in mind, with these trade assertions I am taking into account that there could very easily be 3 players who need a place on the 40-man roster, which is currently full, King Felix is almost a certainty. Charlie is a good possibility. And don’t sleep on LH reliever Tyler Matzek. He is just one more shutdown inning away from winning a job himself. The Braves could very easily be forced to open up 3 spots on the 40-man. Some names we have grown accustomed to are gonna have to go.

I think they could still make a big move, even tough it’s unlikely. While the lineup projects to be a 90-win assemblage, there are still question marks at SS and CF in 2020. What do we know about the SS and CF positions? Great teams are built with strength up the middle. I won’t ever be surprised at anything A-Train does. We all read the Francisco Lindor chatter over the winter, but the Angels also have an All-Star SS at the end of his deal. Some guy named Andrelton Simpson, Simon… something like that. He’s still the best defensive SS in the game. If LAA, who never has the pitching required to really contend with HOU or OAK, decide to jettison the veteran, I bet the ATL brass would be interested. The Halos need pitching; we have pitching. Like I said, nothing would surprise me with AA.

One thing the Braves have is pitching,

You are right though, they will trade someone who is on the current 40. They may clear a couple of spots with the 60 day DL but still we don’t know yet who the Braves are willing to cut.

    Ender Inciarte update: .176/.318/.176; 17 AB, 2 H, 7K

Ender is doner. I am now advocating for Acuña in CF with Duvall/Markakis platooning in RF. I know everyone, including Ronald, prefers him RF. And I know there is a slight compromise defensively. But going into games hoping Ender will contribute is like hoping the IRS will forget about your taxes. It ain’t hap’nin’.

And to be fair, Ender isn’t exactly Andruw Jones anymore anyway. His defense has also dropped off commensurate with his loss of footspeed. The spate of leg injuries has taken a toll on his game. While I do not assign any specific value to many of the advanced baseball metrics, especially for defense, I think you can take the same number for the same player and spot a trend. In this instance, I will use the UZR (Ultimate Zone Rating) as used by Fangraphs as a standard defensive rating. I do not know what all goes into generating the number, and I don’t really care. But the trend for Ender is readable and disturbing.

Ender’s UZR rating peaked in 2018 at 7.2. That was his 3rd year in ATL, a year in which he won his 3rd of 3 Gold Gloves in a row. Then, after being gripped by various leg injuries, the rating dropped to 0.6 in 2019, which is ranked 22nd in baseball out of players with 450 innings or more in CF (Ender played only 491 innings). I’m not seeing (or reading) anything out of spring training to make me believe Ender is going to vie for Comeback Player of the Year. To the contrary, it has been miserable. I’m only wondering what they can do with him now. He sulked last year after being benched, and I doubt he’ll be any happier in a bench role this year. His formerly “team friendly” contract ($7.7M in 2020, $8.7M in 2021, $1.02M buyout in 2022) now makes him untradeable unless the Braves brass eats a portion of it… or unless they attach a good prospect to the deal.

V, I found that foot-speed info you posted very interesting!
    a refresher why not CF?

The simple answer is that Johan is slow.

In 2019, he had the slowest sprint speed of all major league SS at 25.6 feet/second. (Which, as we mentioned above, is why he’s no longer a SS.) Statcast lists the sprint speed of all ML CF’ers for 2019, and Johan does not even rank in the top 76, all that are listed. FWIW, the #76 player listed is Odubel Herrera at 26.7 f/s. In 2019, among the Braves’ position players, Johan’s sprint speed only outpaced Tyler Flowers (25.2 f/s), Francisco Cervelli (25.2 f/s) and Brian McCann (22.2 f/s).

I had no Idea Johan was that slow, but it makes sense since he doesn’t steal at all ….and you are right, CF would not work then.

I went to look up someone else’s foot-speed a SS considered by many the very best one of a generation…. Andrelton Simmons, who ranks in the bottom half of speed, 408th in the majors. 26.3! Below average, in other words (I had always wondered why he never stole bases, now we know)
But, Johan did lose weight over the winter, right? So, he may be a tick or two faster, right?
and he’s 26 , so he really shouldn’t have lost anything yet….I would think he could be an above average SS….

What can you do? Anyone remember when the only contagion we worried about was AIDS? So many lies as to how people contacted it. No, not from a toilet seat… But in the EMS world, everything became disposable, one time use for everything.

So here are some facts to consider. Tuberculosis is still the number one cause of contagious death. A person is more likely to die of staph infection contracted at a hospital than from Corona Virus. As a matter of fact, more people will die from accidents induced by drinking a 6 pack of Coronas than will die from the Corona virus.

The steps we all need to take is the same as we have always needed to take, wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze and remember for all the people who wash their hands after using a restroom, their are those that don’t. It is why I always try to use a paper towel to access the handle on the restroom door when leaving.

My biggest fear is having to wait in common areas in any type of medical facility. After all, there are lots of sick people there and see my comments in the second paragraph.

Too many disaster movies make people paranoid. For me it’s grand kids…. Just saying…

I hate it when people get nuts about anything. I don’t deny their are risks with Covid-19 but it is more likely people will get killed in an accident on the way to a sorting event than getting the super flu. Sigh… biggest lesson from all this completely overlooked by the folks in the Creating a Panic business, AKA the media. The biggest risk in not dying of Corona Virus, it is being over 80 in a nursing home.

So, for all those folks who have a phobia about leaving their home… You Know…

Here is a great example of the unnecessary fear pumped into the general public by the media…

Ken Rosensource has “unlocked’ all Coronavirus related stories over at his cash cow The Athletic. In a recent story about how the new flu is affecting MLB, he makes the following statement: “If MLB intends to exercise an abundance of caution, can it justify keeping camps open to the public? Can it allow teams to continue holding workouts, knowing a professional athlete — the Utah Jazz’s Rudy Gobert — has tested positive for COVID-19?”

Can someone explain to me how an NBA pro in Utah testing positive – oh, and only presumed positive; not confirmed as of yet* – endangers MLB pros in Florida? Where is the correlation other than the fact that each subset earns their living playing a sport? And does that mean because Ken Rosenshort covers pro sports that he needs to self-quarantine? Can we at least quarantine his ramblings? He would seem to me to be more susceptible to the virus than a bunch of guys taking 1 hour bus trips up and down the Florida coastlines.

NOTE: There is a 2-step procedure for a confirmed positive result. If a test passes the preliminary stage, it is considered “presumed positive” and moves forward for further testing. In the state of Georgia at the time I’m typing this, the media is reporting 31 cases of COVID-19. The truth is that there are only 12 confirmed cases, with the additional 19 only *presumed positive. But the media carries the full 31 number. You can be assured that if any of those 19 fail the additional testing, we won’t hear about it.

And now back to more factual reporting…

The Rangers optioned Kolby Allard to their AAA camp yesterday. I wish him success, but I believe the Braves got the better end of that deal… especially since Chris Martin re-upped for 2 more years. Martin is exactly the kind of reliever that is a premium value given the new 3-out rule.

I would think less players in baseball would get this than basketball, but….who knows? I really was wondering why the NBA overreacted, but…when you think about it all it takes is one player testing positive and a whole team will likely need to be quarantined(at least at their own home), then…you have to stop playing, just to be fair to that team….

meanwhile, NEVER, EVER FORGET who brought this mini plague to us, CHINA! and now those SOB’s are publicly stating that perhaps the U.S. Army brought the Wuhan virus to Wuhan….

2 guys in all of the Utah Jazz basketball operations tested positive, all others tested negative. And they tested everyone from players to execs to admin to towel washers. So it’s not running rampant in their locker room.

I left here this morning for work purposes and drove around Atlanta for about 3 hours. In that time, almost every NCAA sports conference suspended their spring sports games indefinitely and all conference basketball tournaments have been cancelled. The NCAA also announced that if their national tournament commences, it will be without fans. To that end, the NCAA is looking for a smaller venue in Atlanta to hold the tournament Final Four, which had been scheduled in Mercedes Benz Stadium. The NHL joined the NBA in suspending the rest of their season. The MLS (soccer) suspended their young season indefinitely, along with MLL (Lacrosse). Also, MLB is expected to suspend their operations indefinitely following today’s games following a conference call with all 30 owners this morning.

Ha.. 🙂 Yep, just finished East of Eden and Truman. Not quick reads, especially for a guy who talks kind of slow there is that. Just started to re-read Cannery Row. I first read it in the late 70s and it is just as funny as the first time I red it. Going to read the sequel next. Still lots of time before baseball cranks up again.

Any suggestions out there, let me know. I have already read all of Agatha Christie mysteries, that was a starting point for me. Also all of Sydney Sheldon and Robert Ludlum. The latter is a tough read by the way. Lots of big words.

Anyway, in the meantime, I am avoiding anywhere sick people amass.

The good news, viruses die when exposed to sunshine and heat…. Sounds like an open air ballpark might just be one of the safest places on the planet… Just saying…

Well, spring stats really don’t mean a whole lot, but it’s all we have to hold on to right now. So that said, here are the top 5 ERA’s this spring:

Daniel Ponce De Leon, Cardinals 0.69
    Jose Urena, Marlins 1.29
    J.A. Happ, Yankees 1.38
    Dylan Bundy, Angels 1.59
    Felix Hernandez, Braves 1.98

    I recognized that last fella.

FWIW, the rotation was lining up to be: Soroka, Fried, Folty, Newk, Felix. And for all the question marks, especially in light of Hamels’ unexpected injury, those five flingers look pretty good to me. All but Folty were rock solid in their abbreviated starts. Folty was… typical Folty. He’s as inconsistent as a politician.

Here’s the article that was posted on our airline site and, though it was never mentioned because nobody had heard of it at that point, you can draw you conclusions as to what it was. And see how very quickly it took out a person who had been completely well.

Good morning baseball fans. Another day of little news outside of some Trump bashing and minute reporting of more of we seniors dropping like flies if we are exposed. Well, I am not giving the virus a chance. I am staying away form hospitals and doctor’s offices at all cost.

So, more time to sleep and such. Boring I know but doing my part.

It is so funny as to how folks have forgotten that regular soap and water work just fine and hand sanitizers are for instances where you don’t have a choice. It shouldn’t be your first choice, just a last resort.

Also Clorox and water work great as opposed to Lysol wipes. Maybe not as convenient but if we are confined to quarters, does it make a difference? I figure if it was good enough for Aids, it should work on the Wuflu…

Now, I think I shall venture outside and do at least one constructive thing today.

Gil, not to worry, it was a….low key birthday….stayed home, wee!
Saw on FB that 5 years ago, I took Dad to the E.R. so, I’ll take a quiet day at home!

Gil, you mentioned reading all the Agatha Christie books! Wow, my late Mom and you would have got along great! 🙂 she loved reading mysteries, Dick Francis (always about horse-racing) Sue Grafton, ((“A” Is for Alibi, etc) Rita Mae Brown (always cat related)
Agatha just seemed better than the others, but there is one writer I really liked that my Mom’s sister got her several of her books back in the 90s. Craig Rice! Really interesting style, a main characters are a bit like Nick and Nora Charles (Thin Man films) if you have seen those thin man movies. the book has another character, John J. Malone (I think) a sloppily dressed Lawyer (sort of a Columbo lawyer)
just a lot of fun, and were written in the 30’s and 40s’
By the way, Craig Rice…was a woman! in fact, the first mystery writer to be on the cover of Time Magazine.
Might be able to get her books still, perhaps at least used? Bio…. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Rice_(author)

Great topic, Ber. And if I’m honest, I just don’t feel like talking much about baseball. Can you believe that?

Great suggestion on Agatha Christie and Craig Rice. Rice especially sounds like something I personally would love. And I still use my old Kindle. No filthy pages to thumb through. Pretty timely now, eh?

If I can find the old movies like the Thin Man series, then I’ll watch those again. Some of my favorites. Sadly, I do not pay extra for the TCM app, so I no longer have access to their vault. YouTube is a good idea. I’ll check that out. I think I saw where some great old westerns are available there. If that’s the case, I’ll be watching those for sure. Of course, those I’ll have to watch by myself. 😀

Here, I have Amazon Prime Video, Hulu Live, Netflix. and Disney+. We have been watching all the ’40’s classic Disney cartoons and really enjoying them. I imagine at some point we’ll start through the classic animated movies and move our way forward through them.

As for Netflix, Mrs. V and I have just completed watching the last available season (the 6th season) of Father Brown. We both thoroughly loved it. It’s an adaptation of a series of short stories written and set in the ’50’s English countryside about a priest who dabbles in solving mysteries. It’s a very fun series. It’s lighthearted and the scenery is breathtaking. But if you are going to check it out, and I suggest you do, be aware that only the first 6 (of 9) seasons are available on Netflix and those will be moving off soon to the show’s permanent home at Britbox where season 7 is already available. Most of the good BBC series are going to be found there soon. I may have to add that one to our choices at some point.

We also just started watching Disney’s The Mandalorian. It’s better than I was expecting. Usually when a series gets alot of media buzz and becomes popular, I don’t care for it. But this one I do like… at least thus far. Mrs. V likes it too, for what that’s worth.

And how could I have not mentioned the Bible? What a great time to slow down and spend some quality time communing with the Lord? Psalm 37:7 says, “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him…” Talking with the Lord is a 2-way street. Many times we want to shoot a quick prayer His direction, but don’t wait to hear back from Him. Maybe if we weren’t willing to do this on our own, the Lord has allowed a way for it to happen? I don’t believe He would ever send this upon us Himself for harm, but He will allow trials from the enemy to happen. Sometimes He just wants to get out attention, especially when it has been turned away from Him so prominently. The Bible says in Genesis 50:20: “[The enemy] intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”

OK… I got preachy. But I won’t apologize. It’s what I do. If you don’t already know, then know that the Lord loves you and holds you dear to Him. He is the strong tower and refuge in times of trouble.

Yes Vee, if ever a time when baseball would have been a great diversion, this is it. So I agree, it is like it is not even the least bit relevant at this point.

Currently ready the sequel to Cannery Row, Sweet Thursday. I never even knew there was a sequel before last week. Just a funny as Cannery Row. A lot of Steinbeck’s books were made into movies but for the most part, books made into movies leave me flat. I have found the only way to enjoy them is to either not having read the book or there has been a great passage of time between reading and viewing.

Ber, Agatha was a writer I cut my reading eye teeth on so to speak. I am and always have been a slow reader. The wife on the other hand is a speed reader and has a super retention level. She gives great book reports. For me, if I wanted to zoom through a book, I will buy the Classic Comic book version.

Good morning and happy weekend Stuffville… Finished “Sweet Thursday” yesterday. It was a very worthy sequel to Steinbeck’s “Cannery Row”. Mucho laughs and very insightful look at Monterrey/Salinas Valley of California post WW II. I still am in the firm Mind that “Grapes of Wrath” was Steinbeck’s best work edging out “East of Eden” and “Of Mice and Men” . I think the modern writer who comes closest to exhibiting the writing and story telling skills of Steinbeck is John Irvin. “My personal favorite by Irvin is “The World According to Garp”.

I started on my revisit of Mark Twain last night. A fond memory of my childhood was of my 2nd grade teacher, Miss Clark, who read to us after lunch each day. One of her books was “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” . A book that is misguidedly labeled as racist by some today. I am not going to open up that can of worms but well, you know…

So, as we await some baseball news, I feel we are being giving some hopeful news on the pandemic front. Again, no need to vent right here on that topic but again, you know…

Hi, everyone. Just not really interested in baseball right now. My passion will return. It’s just that the circumstances of life seem to have hit the “pause” button for the time being. And honestly, what is there to talk about? Can’t talk about rosters because there’s no way to know when the season may start. And because of that, there’s no way to know who is ready and who is not. And there’s no way to know how this affects current contracts and clauses. And there’s no way to know…

    Well, you get the idea.

Stay home. Love your family well. Keep smiling. (It’s contagious.) Use your head for more than a hat rack. Be vigilant but not fearful. *For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. – 2 Timothy 1:7

Ber. I had a special collection of Stienbeck novels 40 some years ago. A lot of his books were made into movies but like I said, the movies are always lacking Many people will say how great a movie The Grapes of Wrath is but reading the book is so much better and deeper. Stienbeck was a communist before the truth of communism was really known.

Now, I have several new books I am about to embark upon including some history books. I don’t really read about the War of Northern Aggression much because it was so stupid the reason it was fraught to begin with and it was so horrible. WW I was the same but I feel a little more remove from that one.

I also plan to read up on the Crimean War. Another conflict I know little about.

Gordon, I just find the Civil War very depressing, and yes, it is in my backyard. Front yard too. Josie has found several artifacts on the property and we have an artillery breast works that marks the north-east boundary of our property. We are adjacent to the Pole Green Church and sit askew to the Salem Church on Pole Green Road. Still, it is depressing when you dig into all the pain and suffering that went on.

I have read a lot of Bruce Canton’s histories on the Army of the Potomac as well as Douglas S. Freeman’s Lee’s Lieutenants. Just finished an Audio book called Rebel Yell which was a biography of Stonewall Jackson. A strange but brilliant man.

One last thought about war. My take is the best wars are the ones not fought. Sadly, as long as we have human ego. We will have wars. Best to be prepared to make them so horrible no one dares to fire the first shot.

Marty Rivera, a writer for ESPN, conducted a short Q&A with MLB’s 30 managers for a piece they published yesterday. Below are the Q’s and A’s for Snit…

Q: How will this crisis ultimately impact baseball?

A: Brian Snitker, Braves: We’re going to learn from this as a society, especially when it comes to our families and our outlook on life. This has forced us to slow things down a little bit, and think, and look in front of us and see what this is really all about. Our game will change as a direct influence of what we’re going through as a society. Maybe we took this whole thing for granted in the past and we needed this right here to slap us in the face and see how special our game really is. We might just step back and appreciate that there are a lot things that we took for granted.

For example, sometimes there’d be gripes about travel and I would tell the guys, you know, this isn’t a 13-hour bus ride, when you get to the ballpark at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, strap things on and play. So little things like that, that are not a big deal, we make them a big deal. I expect that we will see things a lot differently and appreciate things a lot more than we used to.

Q: Do you have any doubts there will be an MLB season?

A: Snitker, Braves: I’m hoping we do. I can’t afford to let myself to think any other way. I’m very optimistic that at some point in time we’re going to be playing baseball. I think it’s going to be good for everybody. I think our country is going to need baseball. I have every confidence that the powers that be, and the people that are fighting through this, which is not an easy thing for anybody involved in our industry, or in our world or in our lives, we’re going to figure this out. We’re going to fight this fight, and we’re going to come out stronger than ever. And when baseball is played again, it’s going to be good for all concerned.

Q: What else are you doing day-to-day? What has helped you through this?

A: Snitker, Braves: I’m staying busy. My son and I went fishing. We’re walking a lot, and I’ve even been doing yoga with my wife. We can’t dwell on this because you drive yourself crazy. You have to take things one day at a time in this industry. That’s what this game is. I know it sounds corny sometimes, but you’re never guaranteed tomorrow so you have to live for today. We also have a lot of projects around the house here. We moved in three years ago to this house and we have been going through boxes and throwing stuff out, cleaning closets. But I try to leave my wife pretty much alone, because there’s a lot of stuff that I just stand over her and I feel like I just I’m bothering her — I’m useless. That’s when she’s like, “Why don’t you go take a walk?”

Good afternoon Stuffians. Busy here learning all about the fall of Rome to the barbarians. Lots of civil wars and poor leadership, yet, they survived as an empire for nearly 1000 years. A pretty decent run methinks. The Braves should be so lucky.

Keeping up with the different states as they close down shop(s). Lots of free time to get to all those long delayed projects. That said, it just does not feel like it is the most important thing for me to do right now.

So, when the dust settles and the fingers can all be pointed by the survivors, I foresee a BIG epidemic of Monday Morning quarterbackitis. You betcha…

I realize baseball is not a high priority at this point with most people but it would be nice to have that distraction. In the meantime, stay safe. Keep your faith in God. His will be done.

Actually a remake of a film from the early 30s. So here are some of the ideas being floated to put together a “compressed” season and get the ball rolling, pun fully intended:

+Playing without fans for TV only.
    +Playing a 7-inning double header once a week.
+Adding a 27th player to the roster for the purpose of deploying a 6-man rotation (to keep from blowing pitcher’s unprepared arms out early).
+Playing all the games in Arizona spring training facilities since they have 10 parks (plus the D’backs home stadium) with a maximum 40-mile drive from the most distant parks.
+And a myriad of proposals as to how to handle extra inning games. These range from semi-reasonable to outrageous, such as simply calling it a tie after 9 innings to the stupid runner-on-2B gimmick they’ve tried in the minors. Justin Turner wants to trot out a Home Run Derby to decide a winner after 9.

I suppose you do what you have to do, but it starts to sound alot like a made-for-TV movie… not very good and certainly not what we have grown to love. But I suppose it all comes down to those lost TV dollars, right? Maybe I can live with it for one year.

I understand, too, that it’s alot like the stimulus package. On its own merit, it has alot of downside. In fact, it sounds downright illogical. But when you put it in the context that you have to keep the pump primed or it might not re-start, well… now it makes a heckuva lot more sense.

As we touched on yesterday, MLB is actively seeking a way to return to the field for some incarnation of baseball as soon as is feasible. Let’s face it folks… whichever pro league can manage to get games on TV first will find a ratings bonanza. You know that both MLB and the MLPBA are looking at ways to get out there and get those TV dollars flowing back into the sport, because as much as everyone acknowledges the need for health and safety, they need that green lifeblood flowing into the sport to keep it healthy also. (On another note, there are indirect consequences that are currently in play, and we’ll address how that might affect the Braves specifically in another post.)

Anyway, the aforesaid league and players’ association are actively discussing a plan to get the games back on the field. Jeff Passan gave us some of the details yesterday, and they matched what was being speculated. The plan is indeed to play all the games in the Arizona spring stadiums plus Chase Field, the D’backs home park. All of these parks are at a max 40 minute drive from each other, so the travel is minimized. More Passan:

“Players, coaching staffs and other essential personnel would be sequestered at local hotels, where they would live in relative isolation and travel only to and from the stadium, sources said. Federal officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the National Institute of Health have been supportive of a plan that would adhere to strict isolation, promote social distancing and allow MLB to become the first professional sport to return.”

Also, as we noted yesterday, the plan would seem to include one 7-inning double-header per week. This heightens the requirement of a 6-man rotation to handle the additional start per week. (The Braves may be better positioned to absorb such a need given that we currently have 3 pitchers vying for 2 open spots… and just 1 open spot if you consider that Cole Hamels could very well be ready for the new Opening Day. We’ll touch on that also in a separate post.)

I also heard late yesterday that because of the accelerated schedule, the September roster expansion may be in play for the whole season. If you’ll recall, the new rule nixed the availability of the entire 40-man roster and mandated all clubs carry 28 players in September. In other words, they’ll carry the 28 man roster for all of 2020. I also heard this morning that there is consideration for the entire 40-man roster to be active, but I think that was an ill-informed report. That makes no sense and would seem counter-productive to keeping the team safe and socially distant.

There was no news on the topic of extra-inning games. I understand the desire to minimize the length of games, especially when you consider that some parks will be hosting at least 2 games in a day… and Chase Field possibly hosting 3. Remember, there are 30 teams, thus there are 15 matchups for only 11 ballparks.

I am wondering this morning that if there is great attention being given to the health of pitchers given that the normal routine of working into their routines has been totally obliterated, would the 2 sides be talking about the universal DH for this truncated season as well? I could see it being a topic, and I can even understand its advocacy. Time and consistent routine has always been the pitcher’s best friends. A compressed and accelerated season would seem to play counter those needs.

All of this simply means that there is a great likelihood that we’ll see baseball in 2020, and there is great interest to get it back sooner than later. And while we will certainly be tossing alot of great traditions ad norms out the window to make it happen, having some form of baseball back is better than no baseball at all.

As for Cole Hamels, AA said in an interview yesterday that Hamels is pain free, and would already be involved in his throwing program if the season were going on as normal. In other words, Hamels would be starting a rehab assignment. So there is a great likelihood that he will indeed be ready for the delayed start of the season, barring some sort of setback. But since his pain was muscle related and not soft-tissue related, the chances that he’s completely recovered is much greater.

The other ting I wanted to ruminate on is the effect that this shut-down might have on the Braves not just in 2020, but going forward. One of the reasons that AA was able to roll out the “green carpet” to a number of pricey Free Agents this offseason is the new cash flow coming to the team via The Battery, the great gathering place just outside the home ballpark. And as much as we are missing the games and want them to come back at least on TV, there is no foot traffic in and out of Truist Park (I do NOT like that name) and no patronage of all the great venues in The Battery. (Insert dead battery jokes here.)

What will this mean for the team in 2021, 2022, and beyond? No one knows, but any clear thinking person has to see that it can’t be very positive. This is the time when those teams with the TV mega-deals – Dodgers, Angels, Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs – will have the advantage, and teams that got creative and created their own external revenue streams are put back in their small-market places.

Okay, the real key to me going forward is this: The fear over Covid-19 aka the WuFlu aka the Chinese virus.. anyway, my point is at the time there was no simple reliable testing and no known treatment. SO, there are now several test that give results in 5-45 minutes rather than 2 weeks, also, there are several treatments that appear to defeat the virus, also healthy individuals such as baseball players are are considered low risk. In other words, IMHO I don’t think the WuFlu has any greater risk to baseball players than any other virus.

Remember the huge fear over AIDS? Well, this is more of the same. We have learned much since that hoopla.

      Let the games begin…

IMHO I don’t think the WuFlu has any greater risk to baseball players than any other virus.

Of course it doesn’t. The concern over a “normal” operation is the clubhouse and close confines. Also, with no stadium revenue, operating 30 ballparks is a losing venture. At least by keeping everyone within a 40 mile distance, they are minimizing operation and travel costs. Also, they can keep the teams in a somewhat controlled environment by essentially turning hotels into self-contained quarantine homes.

From the players’ standpoint, they would all be leaving their families for extended periods of time. That part sucks enormously. But there comes a point when sacrifices of all sorts will have to be made to keep the game itself healthy and viable.

MLB’s official statement on their current plans:

“MLB has been actively considering numerous contingency plans that would allow play to commence once the public health situation has improved to the point that it is safe to do so,” the commissioner’s office said in a statement Tuesday. “While we have discussed the idea of staging games at one location as one potential option, we have not settled on that option or developed a detailed plan.”

“While we continue to interact regularly with governmental and public health officials, we have not sought or received approval of any plan from federal, state and local officials, or the players’ association,” MLB said. “We are not ready at this time to endorse any particular format for staging games in light of the rapidly changing public health situation caused by the coronavirus.” — source: AP

    Stuff:
A few of you may know that I’ve been writing a book for a while (looong time) now. Well, it is in Final Editing now and about ready for publishing! I can hardly believe it! Never thought I’d see the day, and now it’s dawning! Still need to do t he cover and some odd t hings here and there – then! (ta daaaa) it’ll be out! Title? Something along the line of Team1: Beginning
    A Brickhouse-MacKenzie story (Book1)
What kind of story? Sort of a mix of drama/adventure/a touch of romance.
A new division has been added to DOD, Office of Special Investigations, (brainchild of the Sec Def) has been created to, among other things, investigate crimes that involve multiple services. Instead of having the CIDs of each service involved, OSI will handle it. Team1, still in the process of forming, is dispatched to investigate villain Carlos Alvada, a major drug lord, who uses the small city of Wilmington, NC (surprise!) to import enormous amounts of drugs to be distributed to the numerous military bases up and down the eastern seaboard. During this initial investigation, John Brickhouse and the first few members of his newly formed team liaise with DEA agent M. MacKenzie, and the story begins.
Length: a bit over 60,000 words (so it is a full-length novel)
Publishing: I think I’ll do it independently. I don’t want to sell the rights to my story to a publisher who can then do whatever they want with/to it.
Bonus: Book 2 is already about half written.
    (whew!)
    grin

Hello everyone. I trust each of you had a great Resurrection Day. I did watch about 6 innings, well… parts of 6 innings when my eyes remained in the open position, of Mike Soroka’s 2019 pitching debut. Funny, even though I remember the moment in general terms, I still found myself compelled by each pitch and each at bat. It felt good. I did let it go after Soroka was lifted and Josh Tomlin got out of the inning with 1 pitch.

Makes me a little more anxious to see a return of baseball in 2020. And apparently there is a new idea being floated which is a little more radical than the first one, but might be more feasible. As reported by Tomahawk Take’s Alan Carpenter, using Bob Nightengale as a source, this is the new plan being floated… in generality:

This latest-leaked idea is to do the following:

Regionally group the 30 teams into 6 brand new divisions based on their Spring Training sites.
Ignore National/American League designations – which would require a universal Designated Hitter rule.
Call them the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues if you want.
As Nightengale characterizes ‘one realignment structure’, it could look like this for Atlanta:

    Grapefruit League South Division:
    Boston Red Sox
    Minnesota Twins
    Atlanta Braves
    Tampa Bay Rays
    Baltimore Orioles

So the Braves would join 3 clubs from the (traditional?) AL East along with Minnesota – their closest rivals in Florida after the move to North Port.

Speaking of the move to North Port, if the Braves were still in Disney’s complex near Kissimmee, they would be in the worst location of all of MLB. While every ARI park is within a 40 mile circle, Disney was over an hour from any other park, with 2+ hour bus drives not uncommon.

See why they had to make that move?

But back to this “emergency” realignment. I may be in the minority, but I would love to see the Braves in this grouping. It sort of mirrors the NL East in that every team is competitive with the exception of 1 doormat.

Now, as for the Braves in such a format, I think they are built to compete in this group, especially with a DH. The lineup would actually be easy to construct:

    RAJ, RF (R)
    Ozzie, 2B (S)
    Freddie, 1B (L)
    Ozuna, DH (R)
    Duvall/Markakis, LF (P)
    Riley/Camargo, 3B (P)
    d’Arnaud, C (R)
    Dans, SS (R)
    Ender, CF (CF)

    Y’all, that dog will hunt.

The fact that the team would carry the “September” 28-man roster, carrying both Riley and Camargo is now a no-brainer.

And with regard to the pitching, I’m not sure if AA had a crystal ball in his ninja office this winter or not, but he seemingly built the staff to compete with a 6-man rotation and dominating late inning bullpen. Seriously, this team is almost in the perfect position to compete in a condensed season, universal-DH format.

Soroka, Fried, Folty, Hamels, King Felix, and Newk (with Kyle Wright waiting closely in the wings). I like it and I like it alot.

Maybe I’m starting to get excited for 202 again.

Confession: I’ve still been wearing a rotation of 3 of my Braves caps. Some things cannot be squelched.

The latest from MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, courtesy of Ryan Gaydos, FOX Business:

“The only decision we have made, the only real plan that we have, is that baseball is not going to return until the public health situation is improved to the point that we’re comfortable that we can play games in a manner that is safe for our players, our employees, our fans and in a way that will not impact the public health situation adversely.”

“Right now, it’s largely a waiting game. During that period, as you might expect any business would, we have engaged in contingency planning. We thought about how we might be able to return in various scenarios but again the key is the improvement in the public health situation.”

“We have a variety of contingency plans that we have talked about and worked on. Plans may be too strong a word. Ideas … may be a better word. All of them are designed to address limitations that may exist when businesses restart – travel limitations, limitations on mass gatherings that may still exist. We thought about ways to try and make baseball available to all the fans across the United States in the face of those restrictions.”

“So from our perspective we don’t have a plan, we have lots of ideas. What ideas come to fruition will depend on what the restrictions are, what the public health situation is. But we are intent on the idea of trying to make baseball part of the recovery – the economic recovery – and sort of a milestone on the return of normalcy.”

I have to send the looters some additional hard earned cash this year, and I plan to hang onto it until the very last day. Thanks to the Prez’s declaration, I get to sit on it for another 3 months… and I’m gonna milk every day of it.

I was going to put off filing my federal too but my CPA brother advised me that Virginia did not extend the filing date for my state return so, I have to finish up anyway. He also told me not to expect any returns anytime soon as the only people at Soc Sec office is the night watchmen. Actually kind of funny if you think about it.

Taxes done, submitted, accepted and decent refund in the mix somewhere. Amazing what can happen when you actually learn where to put income etc, went from owing to getting refund. So, will get some more dead trees felled next week before they take aim at our roof.

    Now baseball……. “crickets” SIGH! 😦

Reading (listening) to the audio book version of Mitchner’s “Texas” . I read this many years ago and started to re-read again a couple of months ago. My eyes said give it up so my ears have taken over the task of reading. Mitchner has always been one of my favorites and I have read all of his books. Just a joy of learning thru i=his historical fiction.

Hey, you have to have something to fill the void left in the absence of baseball.

    STUFF:
If you’re bored, here’s the tentative cover I designed for my book.

Your opinion? Thoughts? I’d really like to know. I’ve never designed a cover before.
