195:Brave New World 2021

By: Vox O’Reasoñ

Feb 28, 2012

Jefferson, GA – Spring Training 2021 is now fully underway in CoolToday Park, the Atlanta Braves cool new training facility in North Port, FL. In fact, as of the time I type this, the Braves are less than 24 hours away from their first spring game of the new season. And so as we turn the page to another new chapter in the history of our beloved franchise, I think it’s fair to ask some necessary questions about the latest version of the team… or Braves V.2021.

When last we wrote a lead topic for the ol’ B&S, back around the turn of the yearly calendar, we made a lot of noise over the fact that there were still several holes on the team. As has become his norm, GM Alex Anthopoulos got out of the gate quickly to address the lack of depth and lack of experience in our rotation by signing Charlie Morton and Drew Smyly… the former whom has become the type of vaunted savvy veteran hurler every contending team needs, and the latter trying to come back from injury that has slowed him over recent years. Both of these signings appear to be pretty spot on and have been widely hailed as solid acquisitions for this ballclub. Obviously time will tell the whole story here, but this fan and part time writer tends to agree. Then, after those quick pickups happened nothing else followed. Alex was loudly quiet for weeks as all the other teams around us got better and better.

We here at the ol’ B&S continuously beat the poor old dead horse over and over again that the pitching looked solid but that we still had too many holes in the lineup and bench. So let’s revisit that assessment again and see if any of those holes still remain heading into spring game #1, shall we? Here’s the way we described it a mere month ago…

Lineup:
Acuña, RF (R)

Ozzie, 2B (S)
Freddie, 1B (L)
HOLE, LF
d’Arnaud, C (R)
Riley, 3B (R)
Swanson, SS (R)
Pache, CF (R)

Bench:
HOLE, C
HOLE, IF/OF (R)

HOLE, IF/OF (L)
Camargo, IF (S)
Ender “Hole” Inciarte, OF (L)

Then, after what seemed to be the entire Hot Stove Season, Alex finally tossed another log on the fire and made a big time move by bringing Marcell “Big Bear” Ozuna back to Atlanta to mix it up for another 4 years. And TBH, that was the only really big arrow Alex pulled out of his quiver, largely because he was given a pretty cheap quiver by ownership with a greatly limited arsenal of ammo. But the arrow he did shoot was a good one, and it shot true and straight. And it had a fairly nice ripple effect on the rest of the lineup. And after Alex scattershot a few lesser arrows and grabbed some guys off waivers, signed some on minor league deals, etc., we fans now know what we’re heading into the season with, and it looks something like this…

Lineup:
Acuña, RF (R)

Ozzie, 2B (S)
Freddie, 1B (L)
Ozuna, LF (R)
d’Arnaud, C (R)
Riley, 3B (R)
Swanson, SS (R)
Pache, CF (R)

Bench:
Alex Jackson or William Contreras, C (open competition)
Jake Lamb, 3B/1B (L)

Camargo, IF (S)

Bench #4

Bench #5

And there will be plenty of competition for the last 2 spots on the bench, where OF Ender Inciarte cannot be assured that he’ll have a job even if he does come with a $8M commitment, and OF Guillermo Heredia will have to show he can hit consistently. The biggest push will come from veteran hitter Jason Kipnis, a 2B by trade that has enough experience in the OF to be a useful bench piece. And there has to be at least one guy in the whole mix that can play SS, meaning IF Ehire Adrianza should get a good long look. Some of the other contenders for those last spots are OF Phillip Ervin, OF Abraham Almonte, and 3B/1B Pablo Sandoval. Minor leaguer Braden Shewmake, my dark horse candidate, should not be taken too lightly here as he adds a ton of positional versatility and an advanced bat for his pro experience. He may need a tad more seasoning down at AAA, but he’ll almost certainly get his cup of major league coffee sometime this season.

The way this fan sees it, the Braves have put together a contending team again for 2021, and should continue their reign atop the NL East as long as they can stay healthy, because past the starting group there are still some question marks. Three major questions I see for the 2021 season are: 1) Will Austin Riley take the next step in his development and show the type of consistency expected from an everyday starter? 2) Will Dansby Swanson repeat his 60 game success from 2020 over a full 2021 season? 3) Will Cristian Pache carry his 2020 post-season success into 2021 and cement his place in CF? Those are the keys to me for the overall success of this lineup. Otherwise we have an All-Star group atop it in Ronnie, Ozzie, Freddie, Marcell, and Td’A that will have any and every pitcher in MLB nervous when toeing the rubber against our home team all season long.

This should be a fun ride, folks. Let’s enjoy it.

Don’t know much about the players, but it was a good read. I just watch the games with Gil and ask him who that guy is. I only know a few of the guys from last year, but they were really great, in a time when our country was falling apart. Wishing them another great season. 🙂

So, the Rays nip the Braves in the bottom of the 7th with a 2 run homer in a game that ran out of pitchers before they ran out of innings.

What is scary? Only effective Braves pitcher was Carl Edwards

Yes, I agree, it was an opportunity to shake some of the rust off, apparently, there was plenty of rust to go around for both teams.

Apparently, there are no home games on the schedule for Atlanta during spring training for MLB/TV.

Braves travel down to Ft Myers to take on the Red Sox today.

The Braves vs Bosox game was on MLB network today. I woke up in time to watch from the 4th inning on. A couple of quirky things for spring training this year. 1: A pre set number of innings for each game. Today’s game was 7 innings, same as yesterday. The Angles and ChiSox are playing a 5 inning game…
2: There is an agreed 20 pitch limit for a pitcher going into an inning. If a manager wants to end an inning after 20 pitches, he can do so, regardless as to the number of outs.

So, take a-ways for today. Tyler Maztec looked really sharp, Minter not as much. Del la Cruz was shaky but gutted it out. Sorry, but I was late to the game… 🙂 Oh yeah, the Soxs really had their woes trying to catch the ball.

I managed to catch a little of the 1-3 innings myself. Yes, funky rules, but they make sense for teams just trying to build their players up, particularly pitchers, for the real season. The Braves left the bases loaded in the 1st inning because the Bosox pitcher reached 22 pitches when he walked in run #2. I’m sure the Braves could have scored more, but what’s the point? Spring wins are meaningless anyway. The real objective is to get your players ready.

That said, I thought Huascar Ynoa looked very good in his 2 innings. Ronnie is… well, Ronnie. Wash sent him home after the LF had already gloved the ball before Ronnie got to 3B and Ronnie still scored. Pache was robbed of a HR. Jake Lamb had a nice RBI single. Even Phillip Ervin looked like a hitter. I think this team will be able to hit.

Pretty tough to sum up Tuesday’s game without actually seeing it or hearing it on the radio. Looks good on paper though. Travis hit a dinger in his first at bat and the pitching staff did not yield a run, Ender even contributed going 2 for 3 and making a run saving catch with the bases loaded.

Build up that value Ender, we are rooting for you to have a super ST.

Smyly also had three punch outs in his two innings of work. Seems like a pretty good start to me for the lefty who figures to be penciled in at the back of the rotation. The key is staying healthy…

Ozzie Albies had a 4th inning blast off of O’s righty Dillon Tate. Good to have Ozzies left handed power stroke appear. If he is right, he is going to make lot of opposing managers buying bulk packs of Maloxx this season.

This season’s flavor of the month in Braves camp appears to be outfielder Michael Harris. Harris is from the same area that produced Jason Heyward in Atlanta.

My way-too-early prediction for the Opening Day roster.

    Lineup:
    RAJ, RF
    Ozzie, 2B
    MVFree, 1B
    Big Bear, LF
    Td’A, C
    Riley, 3B
    Dans, SS
    Pache, CF

    Rotation:
    Fried (L)
    Morton (R)
    Anderson (R)
    Smyly (L)
    Bryse Wilson (R)
NOTE: Soroka will open the season on the DL

    Bench:
    William Contreras, C (R)
    Jake Lamb, 3B/1B (L)
    Johan, IF/OF (S)
    Ender, OF (L)
TBD (I believe the last bench player is not yet on the team)

    Bullpen:
    Will Smith, Cl (L)
    Chris Martin (R)
    Tyler Matzek (L)
    AJ Minter (L)
    Jacob Webb, (R)
    Grant Dayton (L)
    Josh Tomlin (R)
TBD (I believe the last reliever is not yet on the team)

As for that last reliever, I won’t be surprised to see Shane Greene signed. If it’s not Greene, the team will find another big RH arm to bring in. I will not discount the possibility of young Kyle Muller being that guy, but I think Alex and Snit would prefer someone with experience. I think Huascar Ynoa would be a good one, but I also think they may want to keep him stretched out at AAA. Jaseel de la Cruz could sneak into the conversation as well. Touki Toussaint has a long way to go. He’s a good candidate to be traded for a “change of scenery”. Sean Newcomb is an even better candidate to be traded.

I have no clue about the last bench guy. It’s just a hunch. But unless one of Phillip Ervin, Guillermo Heredia, or Abraham Almonte surprise me, none will open the season in Atlanta. Only Heredia has a minor league option. I wish Braden Shewmake had a little more seasoning. He’d be a perfect fit.

There will be adjustments made closer to the end of camp as other teams identify surpluses and positions of need.

Yep. The competition for the few open roster spots will start to intensify this week after the off day. If there is any sort of real measuring stick thus far, and there’s really not, Cristian Pache is tightening his grip on the starting CF spot, Alex Jackson is falling short at the plate in his best shot at BUC, and Jake Lamb seems to have locked up one of the bench roles.

Expect to see Johan Camargo at SS more as the braintrust determines if they have to fill a bench spot with another player capable of handling SS. It should be noted, too, that Johan could well be in danger of making the team at all if he can’t field the position anymore. The team has a backup 3B in Lamb, and plenty of OF options already in camp or soon to be available. That backup SS may be the most watched competition over the next week or so.

I still think there will be one more addition to the pen and I still think Shane Greene is the best fit, both for him and for the Braves.

    MLBTR:

Veteran outfielder Nick Markakis is calling it a career after 15 seasons at the Major League level, he tells David O’Brien and Dan Connolly of The Athletic. The 37-year-old says he made up his mind shortly after the postseason ended and did not pursue any opportunities this winter. “My No. 1 decision and my main focus on this is obviously my kids and my family,” Markakis said, adding that he’s both fortunate and thankful to have been able to play the game as long as he has.

Nicky Kakes was a very important part of this team during its rebuild and transition to perennial contender. I do not think he gets the credit he’s due. I think he was a great Atlanta Brave and I hope that he one day gets the appreciation he’s due.

New rumor today has 3B/1B Maikel Franco in the sights of the Braves. The Mets and O’s are also in the mix, and Franco is supposed to make a decision possibly as early as this evening.

Why would they be interested in Franco when they already have Johan Camargo and Jake Lamb in camp? Simple.

Johan’s spring slash: .167/.231/.250 with just 2 hits thus far in 13 PA’s.
    Jake’s spring slash: .083/.214/.083 with just 1 hit in 14 PA’s

Doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to figure that one out, does it?

I’m afraid that Johan is short timing it on the big league roster. Lamb has the greater power potential and Johan has minor league options. Add Franco to the mix and you have a pretty good R/L power punch off the bench with him and Lamb. I think right now you have to like Ehire Adrianza’s chances of sneaking in as backup SS. The trick there is that he’ll require a 40-man roster spot. Of course, that decision doesn’t have to be made until right before Opening Day when rosters are set. The Braves’ 40-man roster is currently full. Any new additions would require a casualty. Johan could really use a couple of good games in a row or his minor league options might not even matter.

Speaking of 40-man roster spots, neither one of 4th OF hopefuls Abraham Almonte and Phillip Ervin have minor league options remaining, so one or both could be on the bubble should the need arise. Ender Inciarte has a thumb injury meaning one of the above mentioned fellas could make the Opening Day roster by default. Ervin is the reported leader in the race. He has 4 H in 13 PA’s, so he’s not proven to be overmatched thus far. He also has good power, although it hasn’t shown up in spring games yet. Almonte has not been equal to the task. He has just 1 hit (a triple) thus far. Unless the Braves are getting tired of Chad Sobotka, Almonte is also at risk of losing his roster spot. The other OF in camp is Guillermo Heredia. He does have 1 option left, so the 30-year-old RH will likely be stashed at AAA for depth.

Not sure how I’m going to see the games this year. Since Sinclair Broadcasting, the parent company of the regional Fox Sports networks that broadcast the Braves, can’t seem to come to a contract agreement with any of the streaming services, I might be left out in the cold. I don’t want DirecTV (who already had one battle with the RSNs). I moved from Hulu+ to YoutubeTV when Hulu lost the games last year. Now YoutubeTV is on the outs too. Only Windstream Kinetic carries it here, and I’d have to quadruple what I’m paying now for the service level that includes the RSNs. I just can’t do it.

Makes me ill. The millionaire companies can’t find a satisfactory way to split their millions of dollars, so fans like me pay the price. Thoroughly disgusted.

As for Bryse, yes he gave up contact, but that’s because he threw strikes. Not sure what the final strike/ball count was, but the guy threw to contact all day and let his defense work. I don’t think anything was hit very hard. He never really seemed to not be in control.

Nice to have Acuna heating up. Of course not necessarily against the front line guys but you never really know. Anyway, it is better than having a bunch of swings and misses against those same said scrubs.

It should be fun to see which of the young phenoms emerge as the next outfielder for the Braves, Drew or Harris. There will be a place for either on next years’ team. Maybe even both.

I thought Wilson’s comments were interesting. Said he had a lot of 1-2 and 0-2 counts but had trouble putting guys away. I don’t mind pitching to contact rather than trying to strike everybody out, you can pitch a lot deeper allowing your defense to help you out.

I never quite told you all why I kinda disappeared here for awhile. Bet it’s not why you think!
Just looked it up, the day Ozuna signed his contract was Jan 21st. Wow! Almost 2 months ago. Something else happened that day, before the signing. Lou Dobbs was fired. 40 + years on tv, 11-12 on Fox Business, highest rated prime time show there and poof. Memory holed. No tributes to a legend, a pioneer on cable tv.

Dad and I watched him every day, one of the very few fearless people out there, willing to tell the truth, sharing stories that didn’t get much mainstream press (if any). Well, that had to be snuffed out….Ad to that, President Trump, who had been recently cancelled from the internet, wanted to pay tribute to Lou….so, the President, out of office a mere 2 weeks, had to put out a written letter, to someone I had never heard of, via Twitter…the site the started the cancelling ball a-rollin’.

so, when my buddy that I went to Taco nite , and watched many a braves game called to tell me about the big news, I just….didn’t care. What was SOOOOO important a few hours earlier, just wasn’t.

I know, I can hear you now V! 😉 God’s in Control! And I agree, fully! But, he was in control during the Civil War, WW1, WW2, Vietnam war, etc, right? Bad things can still happen….

and it just feels like bad things were, and are happening, the world is spinning out of control, at an ever faster, and faster rate.

I have some comfort in the fact time, of course….moves on. Closer to the next election ,( I delude myself into thinking, somehow, someway, there is a chance….they will be fair) where hopefully, more and more folks will realize those in charge right now, shouldn’t be in charge of your order at McDonalds.

So….anyways….spring training is just a weird time to me. I cannot see the braves, for the most part.
the MLB channel runs tons of games, which is great for “those” fans, of “those” teams, but I never see highlights of games in the evenings, and well…fake baseball!

Once we get close to real baseball, I will, reliably, like the sun rising in the east, catch the baseball fever, and welcome the respite from the real world of 2021…and post more.

Yes Ber, I became depressed too but powered thru it. One way was to stop watching Fox News… All of it. For the most part I pretty much stopped watching all news because , well, you know… Of course I still see the Huffington Post blurbs and simply come to an opposite conclusion to anything they report.

So I try to get as much Braves baseball news as possible all the while living in the Oriole/Nationals sphere of influence.

That said, welcome back as you input is missed.

Howdy, well after a fairly impressive initial outing by Huscar, it appears he is writing a ticket for himself to Gwinnett. His last two outings have been pretty miserable by all accounts. Maybe he is working on something but I don’t think the guys who are on the bubble can afford the luxury of working on pitches even in exhibition games.

It seems our old friend Folty has rediscovered his ability to throw hard and strike people out at his new home with the Rangers. Good for him… I wish him every success. Did added stress result in his dramatic weight loss last season? Maybe so if you listen to his “change of scenery is good” comments.

Charlie Culberson might just get a chance to play everyday too. Looking at his stat sheet, Charlie Clutch is much more effective with more at bats.

Looks like the Orioles have the Braves number this spring…

Huascar’s problems are the same as they have been throughout his young career… he has trouble getting through the lineup multiple times. He can actually carve out a pretty valuable role in ATL as a guy who can come out of the pen and give you 2 maybe 3 innings. That’s where I see his value to this team.

As for the temporary #5 starting job, Bryse Wilson looks to have taken a pretty commanding lead there. At last that’s this fan’s perspective.

I watched a little bit of the Nits & Mutts game yesterday. Both Schwarber and Bell went deep for the Nits. Should be a fun year in the NL East.

No doubt that Scherzer for the Nits and de Grome for the Mutts will be tough to face but they are only one pitcher on each team and neither will pitch 9 innings in every game. That said, I feel pretty good about the Bravos chances this season with the deep pitching staff they have assembled. Like I said, it should be a fun year.

Wow, it was really fun to see Braves baseball today, even if it was just a meaningless spring training game… That’s not really fair because I am pretty sure it means a lot to play well no matter. Wilson looked solid, not a swing and miss guy like a de Grome or a Schurzer but a really solid back end of the rotation pitchers who is going to get better as he gains experience. He has a bit of a Dave Dombrowski vibe to him methinks.

Luke Jackson looked good in relief and Tyler Matzek looked really strong in the ninth. Heck, everybody looked good. Even the forgotten man Nuke Newcomb.

Got to see the new wunderkind play an inning and make a nice catch against the right centerfield wall. Drew Waters is going to have to step up his game if he wants to play in Atlanta.

Okay, almost forgot, Alex Jackson reminded everyone what it looks like to see a long homerun driven into the teeth of the wind. Perfect timing on the swing, you knew it was gone just by the way it left the bat.

For we out of market fans, semi free baseball on the MLB network with Braves vs Pirates at 1PM. Just the thing for a rainy day.

Trying to keep up with the effectiveness of all the pitchers this spring has been a real trial. Truth be told, I don’t mind the homeruns or the ground ball singles nearly as much as the walks, wild pitches and long pitch counts.

Unless you are an established star, you are not going to get calls on pitches that could go either way. STOP NIBBLING!

Nate Jones… exactly the kind of guy you need to come in with men on base. Weak contact is his forte’.

You are right about Camargo, looks like he will begin the season at Triple A if not traded. The Braves are going to need a couple of roster spots.

Ender appears to be making a conscious effort to go to left field. Good for him. That is where most of his hits are.

      Agree.

It was noted elsewhere today that the Cleveland Non-Specific Cultural Group is hurting so bad for a CF that they’re trying to play newly acquired SS Amed Rosario out there.. and it’s failing miserably. They ought to be looking for a real one, and we just happen to have one we’d let go for almost nothing.

The other team hurting for a player is Cincy, who has no true SS on their roster. Could someone like Johan Camargo help there? You bet he could. He’d love those short fences, too.

There’s a couple of roster spots right there.

Most likely scenario is for a player or players on the forty man plus no options be traded for a lower level prospects.

Other GMs are hoping to catch the low hanging fruit hoping the Braves let someone go out of necessity allowing them to get something for nothing. The Braves have too many good arms where others are pitching poor.

How long do you think Edwards or Jones would last on the open market? Yep…

It would be tough for the braves to part with Grant Dayton who at this point has pitched well this spring. No options left for him and he will not pass through waivers un-claimed.

Which prospects does Texas have in their system who would be worth taking a look at?

At this point, baseball in general is seriously looking at their bottom line. That said, some teams apparently don’t seem to mind throwing millions at one player while being miserly with everyone else. The minors is a prime example. Truth be told, I don’t think most would mind if the college game became a primary feeder source ala football and basketball.

Look for baseball to push hard for some type of salary cap in the next CBA. There will always be haves and have nots in the game unless you have some type of revenue sharing agreement among team owners and folks, that is just against everything owners have ever been about in their lifetimes. They did not make their fortunes by being nice.

For most, it is at the end of their lifetimes they begin to feel guilty about being selfish and try to atone for it. Hey, just how many generations of offspring do they want to screw up? Okay, I’ll leave that rant for another time.

    Ken Rosensource, in The Athletic:

Twice during the offseason, the results of Kirby Yates’ physicals raised red flags.

The first time, the Braves declined to finalize a one-year, $9 million agreement with the free-agent closer, according to major-league sources. The second time, the Blue Jays reduced a proposed one-year, $8.5 million guarantee for Yates to $5.5 million, believing his upside was high enough to justify the risk.

With Opening Day just nine days away, the Jays’ decision appears to have backfired. General manager Ross Atkins told reporters Tuesday that Yates, 33, “most likely” is headed for Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, the second of his career.

Ah… so Alex was on the trail of an established closer, but was astute enough to back away from potential trouble. This is the first I’ve heard any tangible connection to Kirby Yates. It makes you wonder how many deals are discussed and dismissed that we never hear about.

Bryse Wilson is optioned so that the team can carry an extra reliever for the first 10+ games. With the built in off days, the Braves will only have the need for a 5th starter once for the first few turns through the rotation. It’s expected that that one turn will be a bullpen game. Meanwhile, Wilson can stay on track for when he’s needed by pitching in sim games at the alternate site.

I did not realize last night’s game was being streamed until the 2nd inning so I missed Acuna’s lead off homer but I did get to see two fantastic plays by Pache and one pretty good one plus another outfield assist by Acuna. Braves pitchers have to feel pretty good about having such a stout outfield behind them. Should make them less nervous pitching to contact.

Even Ozuna made some nice plays in the outfield. Riley made a nice stop to a hard hit ground ball too. Defense is important. Have a team which can put the bat on the ball is important but having a team which can catch and throw the ball is no less so. It is why I hate walks so much… Just not defense against one but that said, I am not opposed to a few strategic walks being issued on occasion. I won’t be surprised to see more than a few of those being issued in the NL this season top the number 8 hitter in order to face the opposing pitcher.

He did basically the same thing his last appearance. I don’t see how Snit can trust him to not blow up? Yes, he has talent but it is like a faulty light switch, you never know when it is going to short out and burn your house down….

Yes Ber, I know he has shone flashes of brilliance, just like Kyle Wright, Touki Trussant and even Chad Sobotka, bless his heart but he seems to have a tough time getting settled in. That is the problem methinks. Like Newk and Luke, you just never know what you are going to get when they ring the bullpen phone.

For Luke Jackson, well, he can be just plain unlucky at times. Weak ground balls and bloopers are his bane and somehow he needs a pitch to disguise his slider. Batters have found that if they lay off balls thrown at their knees, it will break out of the strike zone. Next thing you know, he has walked himself into a mess.

The Shane Green saga leads me to believe there is more to the story than just money, like some physical problem we don’t know about but the guys doing the hiring do. Shane is/was too good a pitcher to still be on the beach when a slew of major league clubs can use reliable relief pitching.

On reading O’Brien’s piece about Michael Harris and Marquise Grisson’s explanation about how some players have “it”, I could not help but recall my own experience in seeing a player and recognizing that he had “it”.

It occurred while appending a Richmond Braves game with my dad in the summer of ’81. As I watched him make plays in centerfield I kept thinking this kid is special, and fast… That was Brett Butler who was traded by Atlanta to Cleveland in 1984 along with 3rd baseman Brook Jacoby for sore armed Lem Barker. Still on of the worse trades by Atlanta all time.

So yeah, I get how a player can be recognized as something special. He has made Drew Waters yesterday’s news and likely the odd man out as far as outfielders are concerned.

Let’s not forget that Drew Waters is a 5-tool player who bats from both sides of the plate. If he can cut down on the strikeouts, the very item players at his stage of development must overcome, he will still be a force to be reckoned with at the major league level. It might just be Cristian Pache that becomes the odd man out. The good thing is that the Braves have a good problem on their hands. And they have a little time to let that work out. As good a prospect as Michael Harris is, he’s only had 22 AB’s the A-level. The Harris train is still a good way off. Alot can happen in a couple of years.

Low key under-the-radar signing… the Braves signed veteran C Jeff Mathis to a minor league deal after he was cut by the Phils. He’s working out at the alternate site, but don’t be surprised to see him added to the roster in place of Alex Jackson.

The most games Travis d’Arnaud has ever caught in a season is 112, which averages less than 5 out of 7. So you can basically say that AJax will be pressed into duty at least 2 games a week. And while he has come light years as a receiver, and has made himself a very good defensive catcher, he will air condition alot of stadiums this year if he gets enough ABs. Of course, he can hit it a ton when he does make contact… but he has to make contact.

I expect Mathis to be activated at some point in the fairly near future.

As for William Contreras, he still needs to play every day. If Td’A were to get injured, WillieC would come up and be the starter. But for now, he’ll get consistent ABs at AAA.

This is an interesting note made by DO’B… that Mathis is looking to transition into coaching. Perhaps I was hasty to assume Mathis would be added to the ML roster soon. Maybe he was brought in to finish the grooming of William Contreras. If this is the case, I like the move even better. I also like that Mathis could become a part of the coaching staff at some point. Good catchers almost always make good coaches… and sometimes good managers.

      Just a thought.

After releasing him earlier this week, the Braves have re-signed veteran Jason Kipnis to a minor-league deal. Okay, a little veteran experience being stashed at triple A.

I was (briefly) envisioning Jeff Mathis (.161 last year) then pitchers that haven’t hit in a year….yikes!
Did you know…Drew Smyly is…. 0 for his career as a hitter? oh man, it’s really going to be fun watching him come up with the bases loaded, oh….50 times this year :/
Perhaps Garrit Cole will twist his knee on the base paths this year (hopefully not too badly) and some team like the Yankees , and other AL teams will refuse to play in NL parks til the DH is implemented…
It really isn’t fair to have guys that don’t hit, and haven’t since 2019, hit…oh well….

Gil, sadly yes, still have the incredibly overpriced DirectTv…(Have to replace several tube tvs before we could go Roku, or other route)
Don’t watch a ton of local news for obvious reasons, but Dad , when there is “weather” news wants to watch and sports as always follows the weather, and well, the local guys in the ATL just don’t care to cover the braves much, IMHO

OMG… I have tube TVs I am having to take to the dump because nobody wants them any more. To be honest, if you don’t have High Def, the picture on a flat screen digital TV is worse that a standard tv picture.

While people say how great digital TV is for local channels, I disagree because unless you live within 20 miles of the station, you are just as likely to get spotty reception as a good picture. I remember as a kid being able to draw in (although snowy) TV stations 100 miles away.

Gil, have to continually fight to get NON HD on the tube tvs (had to break down and get a fancy-smancy big screen tv late last year in the living room, which is where I watch most of my tv, naturally…oddly, some channels like MavTV ( shows like My Classic Car, etc are there) are not HD, and look terrible.
I am soooo weird, still like to , you know…record movies, etc on dvds. another issue with the new tvs, that without DirectTv I don’t think I could….looked at people on youtube recording Roku, etc and man, you have to have a basic knowledge of quantum physics, and several devices to do that…my future no doubt…not knowing quantum physics though 😉

so, only 2 + hours till game time! Hard to believe!

Yep, tough loss there but I had a premonition of a loss yesterday, just a tough ticket to get out of Philly with a win against Nola. Close but no cigar. Get ’em Saturday and Sunday.

Not sure if the Nats will play their opening series against the Braves next week, you have to wonder if the visited the same strip club the Marlins did last spring??? Just saying…

It is going to be cold and blustery in Philly this weekend. Best to hope the entire team doesn’t come down with pneumonia after playing this crap. One has to wonder if the schedule makers have a map of the USA so they can see regions where cold weather is likely in April? The game in Detroit was ridiculous yesterday.

Seems like we say this every year. Why not just play the first week or so in warmer climate ballparks or indoor ballparks? It doesn’t seem that hard to me. Detroit, Chicago, Philly… you’re just asking for it to be cold.

In this part of the country, March and April are just FUBAR as far as weather stability. Especially around Easter.
It can be 80 degrees on Friday and 6 inches of snow on following Monday. It is not until May the weather stabilizes.

The only way to get around weather is a domed stadium, especially one with a retractable roof. I am of the opinion the Braves missed an opportunity on that one.

Well, appears Cobb county , that voted for Biden (apparently) will lose 100 Mil cuz of their stupidity. Oh well! And MLB has made a deal with a Chinese company to increase their streaming in China. So, don’t any MLB GMs or players get uppity and say something pro Hong Kong or against the enslavement of the Uyghurs, or they will suffer like the NBA did, with this very same company. Freedom of speech, who needs it?

and the final bit about this whole fiasco before I move on (hopefully) I watches MLBTV’s quick pitch, I guess it was Friday night and saw how VERY happy the players appear to be over this, Curtis Granderson, and others that represent the players union….sigh…..I didn’t even get mad, just sad. They just don’t know anything, so they really think good has come out of this…well, fans like me already missed 100 games last year, and who knows how long before stadiums will be allowed to be full (get that Vax passport out!) this year…so, if a combination of small audiences in person and on TV (remember how minuscule the ratings were for the playoffs in 2020, when they should have been thru the roof ?) and greed on both sides leads to a strike in 2022…well, they might just put that final stake in the heart of many a baseball fan. I thought I was done with baseball after the 1994 strike (I didn’t watch at all in 1995, of ALL years)
but I have found for the firsts time in a quarter century, I can truly do without the game I have been so very addicted to most of my life. I do have other interests as I am sure everyone else here has too! Keep poking the bear….

Hi gang, what should be a high point for me with the beginning baseball seasons has definitely been soured by MLB’s wrong headed decision to move the 2021 All-Star game out of Georgia based on a false narrative. I am already beset by a Va Governor who by all accounts is an ass. I don’t even live in Georgia and it still pisses me off. I can’t imagine how many Georgians feel being painted with a broad brush as to somehow being racist only because they want to reduce the probability of fraudulent votes being cast.

I personally think voting should be harder, not easier. But that is just me.

All that said, I find it tough to follow the game right now and even harder to post anything about it. Politics has already ruined NASCAR and the NFL for me. I avoid watching the news as much as possible because I already know most of what is being said is 100% bullshit…

Okay, stepping off my soapbox now, thank you for allowing me to vent.

But things have changed… and that’s not restricted to just baseball. I think I may even be a little more sad than mad… sad for the sheep that are so easily intimidated and influenced. It’s really the weakness of Rob Manfred manifested into a knee-jerk reaction. Whatever.

sad, but I kinda want to see baseball fail…to a degree. I want ratings to crash, attendance to not get back to normal IF fans are allowed to go to games, outside of Texas.
of course, a strike becomes more likely…sigh…but perhaps it’s like a Chemo treatment to the sport. Sadly, the NBA and NFL still seem to be doing ok….but I know so many people that don’t follow the NFL anymore , I expect that day will come….

and I just found out via MLB’s quick Pitch that Ken Reitz, aka the Zamboni machine died at the end of March( they showed a brief tribute to the Cards that died, showed 8 faces, they only mentioned Brock and Gibson)
    anyone remember him?
Probably after Ted Simmons , my favorite Cardinal. He was the SLOWEST player in baseball! Have no idea why , but just couldn’t run to save his life. He lost so many hits. and at least 1 perhaps 2 seasons, he was leading the league in hitting, around June 1st, then would hit like .225 the rest of the season….
but, he was best known for his Zamboni like ways of sucking up every doggone ball down the line, or in the hole. (How he did this being so slow, I’m not sure, played deep on the fake grass I guess) and just didn’t make errors. I Says in this article, he only made 8 one year….
Damn…sad to see players die off you saw in your youth. Of course, everyone knows that feeling….

To me the most impressive thing about Acuna this season is he has realized it is his job to bust it out of the box to first on every ball in play. Last night he was rewarded by being called safe after a routine grounder to short. That my friends is a first. Anyone else remember him dogging it a couple of times last summer?

Tatis who? Anyone who hasn’t seen him play before got an eye full last night. It is a shame the ump missed the call at the plate last night or it would be all that people would be talking about today.

Bryse Wilson must be wondering what else he has to do to punch his ticket to Atlanta. Ynoa to continue to start a while longer.

I think if Shane Greene made sense he would already have a deal somewhere. Not sure what’s goin on with him, but it must not be very attractive.

Jacob Webb has been good in the past, but has just reappeared. I won’t be too quick to besmirch (FOB?) him yet. I do not have the same warm and fuzzies with Nate Jones. I see him as the first man gone when reinforcements arrive.

Victor Arano and Edgar Santana lurk at the alternate sight. And don’t sleep on Kurt Hoekstra. The guy with the biggest upside is Daysbel Hernandez. He just needs some more seasoning. Still, we could see him this season if he can do that thing all young pitchers must do… fine tune the control.

This is the MLB Pipeline profile on Daysbel: His fastball sits easily in the mid-90s and hits 98-99 mph consistently, thrown with excellent riding life. He backs that up with a slider that flashes plus with bite when it’s tight enough, though it can get loopy at times and he can have trouble landing it in the strike zone. Hernandez has had trouble with his control on and off since signing with the Braves, but he threw strikes fairly consistently during his time at instructs. He doesn’t need pinpoint command for him to get to the big leagues, and with the improvements with his slider, he could get some high-leverage innings in the future.

Acuna doing Acuna like things today… No homers but a still a big RBI day.

Up to the bullpen to not implode.

Yano… rookie pitchers (#5s) you feel good to get a well pitched game every third time out. Yano had two well pitched games prior to today… Expecting a gem today was pushing the issue. Second time thru the order the Cubs realized he had a 97-99 mph fastball and a so so slider, results was not unexpected.

In the 2nd inning it becomes evident the difference in having a DH and not.

Nothing to do but grin and bare it right now.

Gil, it was “funny” watching …some of the game yesterday (I left it on, while paying more attention to a phone call I was on , than every out of the game) Ynoa looked ok, didn’t know til I heard his slider, wasn’t..and saw some pitches high, but he could of looked worse. at least he wasn’t walking/hitting them like Kyle Wright. He sure has easy cheese as they (used) to say! Cubs were beyond due….scares me that the Yankees have the worse record in baseball (5-9 isn’t all that bad though, when you think about it) and are up next

Well, watched Levin then realized at 9 PM, that the game had started an hour earlier! Only I think it started at 7 or so (perhaps Wrigley area won’t let games start later? I know they are in the central zone) flipped by to see it was 8-3 and Bryce Wilson hitting…oh good, I can see him pitch at least an inning. WRONG! He was taken out, after hitting because of the short bench (aren’t there now 26 players?) and of course Ronald getting hurt. Guessing since he could barely walk, he will be on the DL later today. Really a shame, the way he’s been hitting.
So, how’d Bryce look? the only pitch I saw in Quick pitch was a hanging slider that was hit for a homer.
If you watched on the PU, then you likely heard, Guillermo Heredia had as many HR’s in the game as all of last year, and more Ribbies (6) than he had in 2020! Ball is nicely juiced, in mid season form even.

I thought Bryse looked solid. The only hicups were breaking pitches that didn’t. Aroid and friends kept going on about how he gave up the dingers on sliders and I am saying out load… HE”S NOT CALLING HIS OWN GAME IDIOTS….

I was surprised he was taken out after only 5 but Snit knows best I suppose?

Last night’s game was a prime example of the adage you’re only as good as your next day’s starting pitcher.

Luke scared the piddle out of me and yet struck out the side.

Craig Kimble looks more like AJ Minter everyday now. I mean actually physically looks like him… Culberson/Dansby alike.

Good morning Stuffville, a late night for me staying up to watched the late returns… Dodgers losing to the Mariners, the Nats topped by the cardinals, the Phillies shut out by the Giants and the Gasman. Texas over the Angles (got to see Charlie Culberson playing third) and last but not least the Brewers topping the Fathers by a run. The Brew Crew has some stout pitching this year. Last season was an aberration for the Millers if you ask me because they were so solid in 2019.

Just to note, Texas pitching held the Angles big two of Trout and Ohtani hitless in 4 ABs each.

So it still comes down to money if you ask me. I know it is still way early but the Braves not signing Mark Melancon who is 6 for 6 in save opportunities for the Padres so far this season.

Perhaps as the Braves are allowed to have fans in the seats this year the revenues will pick up and Alex will have a bit more spending flexibility to shore up the Braves pen.

6:30 PM game time in New York tonight for the Braves vs the Yankers… Kind of an odd starting time if you ask me but perhaps the mayor is trying to allow time for the muggers and rapist to get home early. The Braves go into Yankee Stadium facing a team which has lost five in a row… I hate facing a team which is due to break out. Don’t be surprized to see the Pin Stripers but out tonight.

Gil, I didn’t stay up 😉 but I did watch the highlights this morning. Amazing to see how good Kevin Gausmen(SP?) is now….

“Just to note, Texas pitching held the Angles big two of Trout and Ohtani hitless in 4 ABs each.” true, but Ohtani had a homer taken away….I saw a week or so ago that Ohtani hit a ball 119 MPH. He also had one of the fastest (Feet per minute or whatever the measurement is) runs to 1st base ( I think the 4th fastest of the year) and then of course he has thrown the ball 101 MPH several times this year!!! 😯

well….last nights game was one of the worst braves games I’ve seen in quite some time. The Yankees look terrible, only got 5 hits, but…with good ol’ Nate on the hill…well, they were gonna do just fine. At first I thought, bases loaded, no one out, I can’t get mad at him, he got their weak hitters to pop out, but…a terrible wild pitch and a walk , scored 2 runs. yet now Nate’s ERA is down to 2.45. Isn’t there someone else out there to lose a game, or is Snit wanting to keep the other relievers feeling good about themselves?
    sigh!

A solid victory tonight by the good guys. Ian looked as good as I have seen him pitch and the back end of the line up carried the offense. I become more impressed by Riley’s defense every time I see him make a play. A cheapie homerun by Austin was icing on the cake.

The Phillies, the Fish and Washington also won with the Mets getting blown out by the Cubbies. That means every NL East gained on the leader with the rest holding serve.

Off day for the Braves Thursday with the D’backs scheduled to come into the Big A Friday. Whoop….

Afternoon folks, in the absence of a Braves game last night, I watched the Mets/Cubs game and parts of San Fran/Miami. Cubs came back in 10 and swept the Mets. Two things to note: I believe the Mets broadcast team is the best. I really enjoy listening to then call games. My least favorite is the Nats broadcast guys, hands down… It has nothing to do with how I feel about their team.

Most impressive guy I saw last night was a reliever who had just been called up by the Mets, Sean Reid-Foley. A 25 year old righty late of the Toronto Blue Jays. A bit unusual pre pitch set up but wow, a very lively fastball that jumps. Only 93-94 but plays like its 99. Just a solid looking guy. I expect the Braves to see him when they meet the Mets in mid May. The kid is only 25 and has a history of control problems but I expect he has finally learned his fastball is good enough he does not have to nibble.

Both Ian and Charlie pitched really great in New York this week. As for Charlie Morton’s game, it is really tough to win if your team doesn’t score.

Ynoa toes the rubber tonight against the D’Backs. Folks, he could go either way. He got his bad game out of the way against the Cubs. Perhaps it was just the cold weather which affected him. I guess we will all find out together.

Alrighty then, fun game last night for Braves fans. Vee, I have to admit this Ynoa kid can be special at times. Maybe not ACE like every time out special but becoming a solid performer when not pitching in subzero conditions. I think it lines up for him to get a rematch next week against the Cubs.

Really nice to have Austin Riley finding his stroke. Now, if we can just get Acuna and Freddie going again.

Trea Turner was bitching about the generous strike zone being afforded to DeGrome last night. Yep, it happens, Tom Glavin was a recipient of a wide zone for years…

    Smyly scheduled to pitch tonight.

Afternoon friends, awaiting the start of an afternoon of Braves baseball. Two 7 inning games on tap with Bryse Wilson set to go with Alex Jackson as his battery mate. Second game’s starting pitcher was listed as TBD but I would think it to be Drew Smyly as he was tapped to be the starter last night.

By the way, what’s up with all the phonic spellings of last names? As bad as my step daughter spelling her youngest daughter’s name Massie (Macy) … Of course she originally spelled it Messie but I think you all could figure out how that one would go.

So, with a loss by the Mets and wins by Philly, D.C. and the Fish yesterday, you have a standings of the 1st and last place teams of one game. The Filthies and Mutts both at .500 followed by the Brats at one game under and Miami both at 2 games under .500.

With a sweep by the Braves today, they could be in a tie for first at best or mired in the cellar at worse. Don’t y’all love early season statistics. So very misleading methinks.

Why do I find myself rooting against the Padres? Weird when you think how we typically root for the underdog. I sure don’t have a problem rooting against the Yankees.

So today, go Nits, Rockies and Fish…

I have had to remind myself through the years that it’s basically impossible for a team to look good in shutout loses. Not to be too judgmental of teams , but man, did that look like a team that’s gonna win the division, or even get a wildcard slot? 1 hit in 2 games? Granted short , goofy games, but still. I don’t know when you hit the panic button, not yet but man, the offense! our regular with the 2nd highest B.A. is Riley at .241. Our catcher , LF’er SS and 2nd baseman are at .190 or lower.
Smyly has a 7.29 era, but that is after only 3 starts.
Zac Gallon is a very good pitcher, but MadBum??? He had the worst e.r.a. in all of baseball before his last 2 starts. Even now, it’s 6.31. Last year it was 6.48. He’s just a shell of what he used to be…
Not much to get excited about with this team right now.
Hopefully, the cubs will suck for a few more games….Done with the Cubs in April, and haven’t even seen the Mets yet. (just looked it up, don’t see the Mutts til mid May , so we will see a TON of them the rest of the season, yuck) Schedulers go out of their way to suck, don’t they?

Watching last night’s game, I kept thinking to myself, “can JoBu be far behind” ? I am not sure if the whole “sage” thing is real but like a placebo, if you think it works, then it works… Perhaps it just loosened everyone up just a bit. Still, Dansby went 3 for 4 so there is that.

And that 481 foot dinger might just be the salve that heals Acuna’s woes at the plate.

Ynoa takes the mound tonight, I am hoping it was the cold weather in Chicago which caused him to stink up the joint two weeks ago in Chi Town. Not being able to grip the ball can do that methinks.

Now if the Braves can just get Ozuna going… I would hate to think he is becoming the Braves current version of Dan Uggla. Hey, it happens… Scary thought…

At what point will Travis learn not to ask Bryse Wilson to throw a slider? The kid can make a good living tossing fastballs to multiple spots but his breaking stuff is just not there yet.

Not like the Braves bullpen was having any success last night but that is a rant for another day.

I am so disappointed with this years edition of the bullpen. Who says money/payroll doesn’t matter? I will be honest and say I cannot really blame AA, after all, he cannot spend money he doesn’t have. Nope, that onus falls directly upon the shoulders of Liberty Media. If they are so profit conscious, perhaps they should sell the franchise and make a tidy profit. Manfred says expected price of an expansion franchise is expected to be around 2.2 billion dollars.

I vote for Portland, Ore. that paragon of truth, justice and the American way…

PS: if Liberty media thinks having to spend money to be successful is expensive, just wait until they learn how much they will lose by trying to get by on the cheap.

Expanding the allowed seating capacity to 100% doesn’t mean the fans will flock back to watch an under performing group of bargain basement types…

V, I really like Bryce as a starter…I really hate the way the braves handle young starters. Its sorta like the way position players are forced today to be a 3rd baseman, and a left fielder…so you can be so-so at 2 positions. (If Freddie was coming up now, would be be a 1st baseman/outfielder? well, Braves don’t do too much of it) Yeah, I know, back in the day, starters were relievers for their first season….but the yo-yo stuff I honestly think has ruined Newcomb, and I hope they don’t do that with Bryce. But, what I worried about, 2 older , injury prone starters will soak up the starts that younger guys could/should be getting . Would Glavine have become a HOF’er if he bounced back and forth the rotation, bullpen and the minors? Smoltz?
I know, we had a weak rotation last year , chiefly because of injuries, but ….I’ll be shocked/pleasantly surprised if Smyly and Morton are even healthy enough to be on the mound in Sept, and if they make it to the playoffs…Oct.

Pitchers who possess 2 quality pitches can survive in the bullpen, but will get stroked as a starter. Newcomb has a good fastball and a good slider. As a starter, he tried to “budget” the fastball and over utilized the slider. The result was alot of walks and a ticket to AAA. As a reliever he works fastball first, and slider second more as an offspeed pitch than anything. He has learned to play to his skillset.

Bryse falls into that same category. He has a really good fastball, but tries to nibble too much with his slider before falling behind and having to come back to the plate with the hitter sitting on the fastball that he knows is coming. Bryse’s best offering is his fastball, but he either can’t or won’t air it out as a starter. He needs to focus it across 1 or 2 innings and he’ll find his niche. Just ask Newk… or Will Smith, or a hundred other failed starters turned relievers.

    Gil,
I hear ya…but, I see how horribly cheap teams like the Indians, Reds, and Pirates are…and at least the braves aren’t that level of Clark Howard cheapness!
I think I would have just stuck with Morton, and used the other moola on the pen. I mean, the braves lost our 9th, and 8th inning guys and expected the bullpen to be as good as, or better than last year? I know there are some arms in the minors that likely will help, but as constructed now, this bullpen would be chewed up and spit out by the Dodgers, or Pads.

so, are the Jays this good, or are the Braves just not very good right now?
F.F. has made more errors in a month than I have seen him make in 2 years. Can’t hit lefties all of the sudden. weird!
feel like the Jays have gone from confident to cocky (Bo Bishette takes crazy swings, and no one brushes him back) but they are on fire right now.

Snit seems to be in a bit of snit, every time I see him interviewed post game. He’s so lucky the media treats him like his name is Biden…I wonder if the Greek is aching to fire him, to get some young guy in there???

so down 2 catchers. anyone ever see 2 go down on the same team, same game before? You thought Alex Jackson couldn’t hit, wait til you see Mathis “hit” Perhaps he will have some influence on the STUPID sit on one leg to apparently pitch frame better, as both Jackson and now William Contreras allow passed balls as they can’t get in position to block balls in the dirt. Pitch framing is more important than fielding your position it seems.

Bases loaded, no outs, and scored…1 run…some things never change.
probably shouldn’t write posts during games the braves are losing in 😉

At what point do we begin to believe the Braves preseason predictions for the Braves to finish fourth in the standings was indeed correct?

I refer y’all back to my comments about Liberty Media trying to get by on the cheap…

For a few dollars more, the Braves could have shored up a leaky and unproven bullpen with some pretty stout arms.

As much as I hate to admit it, it looks as if Drew Smyly may be a swing and a miss by the Braves analytics department. (The only swing and misses produced by Smyly so far this season I might add) but I digress…

A merciful day off for the Braves today as they make their way north to the capital still on lockdown and under guard… (A rant for another day)

Okay, nothing to do but put it in our rear view mirror. Tis not as bad as the late season melt down experienced in 2011 but just more obvious. There is still time to fix this thing, it only takes money to do so….

Austin Riley has his bat going but he has developed a nasty yip in his throws to first base. Shades of Zimmerman. I guess there is always a place for him in the outfield… somewhere.

They’ll get it done. Mark it. Save this post. Take it to the bank. It’s about the only think you can count on in this screwy injury-marred season.

Nicely played game by the Braves tonight. Ynoa with a Grand Slam and a gem of an outing going 7 innings and yielding one run. Isn’t that the second time I have seen the Braves centerfielder misplay a ground ball into a triple this season?

Freddie continues to struggle with the bat. must not be getting much rest these days.

We’ll see if the real Max Fried returns tonight or if he is still seeking his 2020 success.

I’m hoping Drew Smyly will experience a Kyle Hendricks type of turn around Thursday afternoon. Kyle had a stellar outing yesterday against the Dodgers. Baseball… who knew?

Just a thought: I am wondering if Freddie needs corrective lenses?

Gil, Chip keeps mentioning that F.F. took a ball off his elbow, and since then hasn’t been hitting (not that he has been hitting much other than his 7 homers this year) F.F.’s swing is so odd, it’s hard to tell if he has extension issues…speaking of extensions…V, I really hope you are right, but….has the Greek given a multi-year contract to anyone that was truly market value? He’s be so lucky that the kids can’t wait a few years to get their millions, so….he has saved Liberty a ton of moola, now and in the future. F.F. has been underpaid (I know, 22 Mil is NOT underpaid, but you know what I mean)
Stanton is getting 7 mil more a year right now, for one example. so what should FF get, when he turns 32 next year? What did the braves offer? 4 year deal for 100 Mil? With one year options afterwards?
I know we don’t want a Fat Albert type of deal around the team’s neck….but what is even a fair deal for both sides? 7 years? thats 210 Mil , I would guess?
What would the Angels offer? or , a team I could really see going after him, the Giants?

      Here’s my opinion…

The number to reach is probably somewhere around 5 yrs / $140M. That’s $28M AAV and it takes Freddie up to age 36. Perhaps Freddie wants a longer deal because he intends to play to age 40. Perhaps Alex wants to backload it because as much as we want to think they have a bank vault overflowing with bags of cash, COVID cut through the Braves bottom line like a Huascar Ynoa slider past Kyle Schwarber. Maybe it;s a combination of both or none of either. The reality is that contract negotiations are way more complex than any of us know. The greatest likelihood is that the divide, whether large or small, is on some issue none of us has even imagined. But there is one big fact that we need to remember, and that is that both sides want to get a deal done. Unless that changes, a deal will get done. It’s only a matter of when.

Good morning folks, it was glorious to see Ozuna hit that grand slam last night after the Nits walked Freddie to load the bases. I was immediately reminded of when then Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez walked a struggling Andruw Jones and saw the next batter clear the bases.

Funny how certain events stick with you over the years. Anyhoo, nice win for the Braves despite some late innings relief work by the Atlanta pen. I have become a bit gun shy with so many spotty performances this season.

That Contreras kid can play a little bit don’t ya know? Not just the hitting but his work behind the plate. In the eight inning alone he snared three pitches headed for the backstop to save at least one run. As much as I loved Javy Lopaz, it was nice to see steady Eddie catching for Greg Maddux. So many passed balls can make a pitcher hesitant to let it fly.

You Tube game today, not my favorite venue for viewing a game. Could today be the day Drew Smyly finds himself on the sore arm DL for a bit? Lets hope he has figured out what he has been doing wrong so far this season because he is sure making me nervous.

Freddie being given the day off by Snit. It has been sad to see Freeman flail away in the box missing all sorts of pitches. That said, the rest of the infield best realize they can’t just sling the ball towards first base and expect whomever is there to bail them out.

Kinda signals to me that d’Arnaud is not expected back before late in the year at best. Don’t be surprised if he doesn’t make it back at all.

Good morning folks. A beautiful but chilly morning here in the Old Dominion. T’was nice to watch the Braves sweep the Nats aside yesterday but I am no fan of the You Tube broadcast.

What do you folks think about the Angles dumping Fat Albert to the curb? Of course he still continues to draw his $30 million dollar salary but I think the money was not really the issue. I don’t know who but I expect some team will pick up the big guy for the league minimum. Personally, I thought Prujos was “cheated” out of a couple of NL MVP trophies by Barry Bonds roided up performances. But that’s just me, it appears many have begun to turn a blind eye to the cheating with the PEDs of late.

Yes, those chemically induced number for Bonds were impressive but imagine what a talent like Acuna could do with a PED booster? That would be scary… and dangerous…

So, back to the Big A tonight for the Los Bravos. Big weekend and the Braves could find themselves back in first place by Sunday, or not…

Gil, excellent point about Bonds stealing a few MVP’s from Phat Albert….never hear about that, it’s always how Matt Kemp had one stolen by the brewers guy (and it was)
But, you can see why they released Albert, what with him hitting 26 HR’s and hitting .214, 204, and 222 since 2019…oh wait, those are Justin Upton’s stats 😛 but…he’s 33, so….
saw this on mlbtr, wonder how long Joe Maddon will be the manager…he’s not young either…

“Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times reports that Pujols was unhappy not only with the fact that he was benched against Rays lefty Ryan Yarbrough last night — against whom he is 6-for-9 with a pair of homers in his career — but that the decision to sit him was made by the front office rather than by manager Joe Maddon.”

well….just as Smyly has a good start, Morton doesn’t…and I’m sorry, but Conteras needs to stop getting down on one knee. Yes, he really sets up well, makes a good target, and I don’t think all 3 pitches that got past him were completely his fault, but you just can’t move as well side to side the way he catches. And the Ump was squeezing the plate, no doubt.
still, Phils scored 10 more runs than the braves. too bad this had to happen with the first normal capacity game of 2021

Morton’s start last night was one for the books wasn’t it? You think the ump was trying to make up for the one call that went the Braves way y\the night before? The whole inning unraveled as a result of the passed ball and it wasn’t even close. It is why the entire 6 runs were unearned but they still counted.

And yes, Charlie was getting squeezed big time but that is okay as long as it s being called the same way for both sides, last night is wasn’t. Only thing I can figure is Hunter had a heavy bet laid down on the Phils to win.

Tonight is a new game. and a new ump…

PS, don’t be too surprise to see Chuck catch Morton’s next game.

well, that was one of the stupidiest, sloppiest games I have seen in quite some time. Braves left, oh I don’t know…100 guys on base? inning after inning…then the home plate ump decided to imitate Hunter…at least he was bad for both teams at times….Conteras is going to have some growing pains, no doubt…just hate to see this many balls get past him
Was very excited to see The big Panda hit yet another pinch hit homer to tie the game up but man, after that…so many easy chances to win and nope….one time I don’t blame the fans for leaving “early” a bit… I got so tired of what was going on that I gave up when it was what, 7-4???? Glad they came back to win but…it was like 2 last place teams seeing who could somehow win the game, after all….someone had to…oh well….perhaps this will build their confidence and they will go on a winning streak.

Yep, I was cheered by the Panda’s heroics, exasperated at Webb’s failure to cover home after a bad throw let in a run and relieved the Braves finally won the game.

Some really sucky umpiring going on these days. Has anyone checked their on line betting accounts lately? Just saying…

The team looked flat to me last night. Maybe they were still in shock from the 12 runs they gave up the night before. I am amazed that Ian only gave up three runs. It looked worse.

NL EAST score card: Nats and Fish lose, Mets win… I didn’t realize Nola would get a start for the Fillies this week end… Of course the Braves have been struggling so much lately trying to score runs, we should hardly notice any difference.

Bust hope is for Ynoa to be equal to the task and maybe a little Mo to be in the Braves dugout tonight after the improbable comeback win last night.

Braves vs Nola: Braves ain’t skeert. We’ve seen the Tomahawk Team handle A-aron more than once. He may be one of the league’s top pitchers, but the Braves have hit him enough that he simply does not hold a mental edge over them.

As for the sloppy play, it’s leaguewide. If you don’t think the disruption of a “normal” 2020 season and all of it’s “normal” activities has had a lasting effect, you would be missing the proverbial boat. Not only has it delayed the development of prospects, it also placed a speedbump in the normal growth of those already in The Show.

One other matter that can’t be overlooked. If it’s indeed a real thing that players like Freddie Freeman press under the uncertainty of a lack of a contract agreement, what does the league as a whole do in a lame duck CBA year?

IMO, it’s simply a symptom of “let the kids play”. We’ve decided that it’s a good marketing idea for these young players to self-promote, making the player the center of attention and not the game itself. Players, especially the young ones, are more concerned with their “brand” and social media accounts than they are with honing their craft. Why worry about practicing ground balls to the off hand side when you can gain a few hundred more followers on “the Gram” by swinging hard and connecting with the occasional long ball? And MLB is good with it… in fact, they promote it. Check out the highlights, and you’ll see a healthy helping Fernando Tatis, Jr., Ronald Acuña, Jr., Juan Soto, Luis Robert, etc. all swatting HRs and mugging for the cameras. Is it fun? Sure it is. I can’t say I even mind it. But we’re fooling ourselves if we believe that we haven’t shifted out priorities in the game. We can appreciate the player who gives himself up to move that runner over to 3B. We may even applaud it. But we stand and cheer and lose our minds when the next guy hits the ball 410 feet with an exit velo of 109 MPH. Anybody ever put the radar on a throw from SS to 1B? Nope, because no one cares. But I’d place a bet that the SS has to make that throw in a timely and accurate manner more times in a game than the young and exciting 3-hole hitter even comes to the plate.

Bravo Vee, the proverbial nail head has been struck.

In part I blame the sports shows for catering to the ill informed and uninformed occasional spectator who do not really grasp the finer points of the game. I get a tingle down my leg whenever a well executed bunt is put down or a two strike single to the off field to drive in a run. Sure, I like homers too but seeing a hit to spoil a shift gladdens my heart.

So we will continue to be beset with countless replay of homeruns (especially those I have no idea of where they actually land) and not the clutch plays that led up to said go-far balls. Okay, it is impressive that someone can actually hit a baseball 450 feet but the camera lens lie. Things are actually much closer than they appear on TV.

SO what is the answer? I have not a clue. Well, a couple of clues actually. More little league teams but not so many of the $500 fees to play verity. Kids playing sports give them a lifelong appreciation of those sports. Not everyone will become a pro but they can all benefit. After all, there are still opportunities for the nerdy kids to become sportswriters and columnist… 🙂

It is my opinion that Jacob Webb’s lack of awareness as to what he is supposed to do AFTER a pitch is thrown is what happens when a player is force to perform at the highest level without the benefit of making those mistakes in a minor league setting.

Hitting is not the only thing a young player learns in the minors.

I never played anywhere near the level these kids are but I do know I have made lots of mistakes in my life and I learned something important from every single one of them.

The unforced error made by Minter in failing to get at least one out played big too but Webb’s deer in the headlights moment was most glaring. I think both of those failure led to giving up runs.

Another day, another loss by the Atlanta bullpen. I am sure those rabid fans on Twitter will be calling for Snit to be sent packing but let’s be honest about the current situation with the Atlanta ballclub. The responsibility lies squarely on the shoulders of Liberty Media. You cannot cut $15 million in payroll from a middle of the pack group of clubs and still expect to perform to the level of a club prior season.

Don’t believe the poor mouthing coming out of Liberty Media about their big debt load. That is real estate expenses for the most part. Few of us own their home outright. We use it as collateral for other expenses where the interest rate is lowest.

Nope, failure to bring back hurlers like Melancon and O’Day et al shows up in the late innings.

As for offense, you have two pure rookies starting, Pache’ and Contreras. Throw in the fact that Freeman has been very un Freeman like this season, well, there you go…

Yes, its still early and the team can still turn this thing around but it has been butt ugly to date and I don’t see any immediate relief in sight. It is good to get Chris Martin back but if your closer is going to have an afternoon where he can’t get out of the ninth without giving up 4 runs, well, you know…

One has to wonder when Orlando Arcia will get the call up, and where he will play. He’s hit safely in all 12 of the Gwinnett Stripers’ games while slashing .385/.450/.846 with 7 HRs, including a walk-off yesterday.

The former Brewer has logged parts of 11 games at SS and parts of 3 at 3B. If anyone is wondering, he does have 1 pro game, at the ML level, in the OF when he logged a start in CF for the Brew Crew last season.

Given the revolving door the Braves have had in CF in 2021, could he get a shot there in ATL? Maybe he should be given a start or 2 in CF for Gwinnett and see how he responds. He wouldn’t be the first middle IF to move out there.

Not the first pitcher to do this, likely not the last. Likely will cost him come arbitration… Will always be saddled with the “has anger issues” tag”…

Yes, it has been a bit of a train wreck season so far hasn’t it? Little did Ynoa realize at the time he had actually pitched well enough to keep the team in the game.

The Jesse Biddle era is done.. whew!

One should never discount Murphy’s first corollary: When things go wrong, it will be the thing that causes the most damage and is the hardest to fix.

FYI: I actually owned a ’66 Triumph GT6 which had those knock off spinner hubs for the wire wheels. The right front wheel actually came off two separate times. I sold that sucker! Just never could trust it after that.

Gil, I can see that being a problem!
so funny, something was not quite right with the 69 Electra my Mom had (I think just before we sold it, we finally found “something” underneath , a non replaceable part, was slightly bent in the frame) and it really caused the car to chew up tires and center links! Wheel would cock WAY over when you went around sharp curves and when you pulled into parking spaces , it almost looked like the car could be pushed over! But, it was very solidly built, no wheels came off in the 100 + K miles put on the car

Beautiful night for a game, and a pretty good game. Good pitching (mostly), good hitting (at times), great fielding… glaring needs.

This team’s need for a real closer has never been more apparent. But that’s not even the worst part. As nice a start as Tucker Davidson made, he’s simply not ready to be a part of a big league rotation. He made a nice spot start and I’m happy for him, but the hole(s) in the rotation remain. Our ace is realistically out for the season. Our #2 started slow, got hurt, and can’t stay healthy. Our wily vet can’t put together a consistent outing. Our roll of the dice signing is still rolling. And our surprise youngster punched a bench. Thank God or Ian Anderson.

This team has hitting even if it’s not hitting every game. But we don’t have pitching. Either things have to come together quickly for Fried, Morton, Smyly… who’s left? Ian Anderson can’t do it by himself.

The ball has truly been handed to Derek Schiller. I believe Alex could go find us some pitching if the team can pay for it. We have the prospect capital to get it done. Just look at last night’s starter. The deadline is still a long way away, but the groundwork should be getting done now. Lets hope the boys in the front office have all the resources they need or it will be a long summer in Atlanta.

Just musing… who is available to start in Huascar’s rotation spot now? Tucker Davidson may have earned another start with a “quality start” last night, but there’s still no overlooking the mistake pitches that were deposited into the OF bleachers. From my perspective (in very good seats), he looked pretty comfortable out there. He was pitching well, grooved one to their pitcher that fell for said pitcher’s first ML hit, and suddenly appeared to lose focus… enough to give up a 2-run homer almost immediately. Then he settled back in before giving up the go-ahead in the 6th. Still, he fanned 5 in 6 innings while only giving up 1 free pass. That’s encouraging. And he only needed 72 pitches to get through said 6 innings, 53 of those pitches being strikes.

Unless he’s demoted today to make room for another bullpen arm, he may have earned another start.

Who else? Kyle Wright? He’s lined up to slide right in, having also started last night. That start, though, was not good: 4.2 IP, 7 H 5 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, and he now sports a not so pretty 6.75 ERA at AAA. He’s not likely to be brought up.

Bryse Wilson? Maybe. But he’s averaging less than 5 IP per start this year. That’s not a high survival rate and does very little to help an already overworked bullpen.

The Braves did pick up Tanner Roark off waivers recently, but I can’t see him contributing anything in the near future. Maybe I’m wrong here. And he’s not currently on the 40-man, which is full.

Speaking of 40-man, both Kyle Muller and Jaseel de la Cruz are already on it and could be called upon in a pinch. I wouldn’t mind seeing Muller, but I’d prefer it in better circumstances… like if the team were up several games in the division and just wanted to give the rotation an extra day’s rest. But I digress…

All this means there is no real help for the rotation on the horizon, just the hope that another youngster can grow up very quickly and take on alot of responsibility and run with it. It’s not impossible. It’s just not something that happens all the time. Let’s hope we can find another diamond in our own pile of coal, because that’s all we really have.

FWIW, the Gwinnett hitters are tearing up the AAA competition. Too much to list here, but Orlando Arcia, Drew Waters, and Abraham Almonte in particular are all showing they have what it takes to hit AAA pitching. One has to wonder how much longer before Arcia is called up… even if he just takes Johan Camargo’s bench spot. Maybe they just want him playing every day. Fair enough.

It was huge, that R.A. hit that game winner. I mean, to be swept by the Mutts, who are down, not 3, but 4 outfielders… and I think their starting 3rd baseman as well…just not good…
I still feel this team has a ton of issues, mainly hitting, bullpen, and rotation…oh and fielding too…but other than that, they are playing just fine! 😛
Dansby , before yesterday’s game, had 54 strikeouts in 154 AB’s, he’s on pace for 200 strikeouts…that and a .209 BA, are Rob Deer territory (but without 30 HR’s) Ozuna started to hit, but seems to have backtracked again, .207 BA. Ozzie, wasn’t he starting to hit? well, he has a .224 BA
FF seems to have turned a corner, to a degree, but still hitting .227 Acuna is 10 for his last 52 AB’s (5 homers though) not so hot for a leadoff hitter. Ozuna, Dansby, and Ozzie have OBP’s .293 or lower.
Thank goodness for Austin Riley(how many more RBI’s would he have if runners were getting on in front of him?) and Heredia!
But, you need more than 2 fairly decent hitters….in case “you” didn’t know that :/

Yes Ber, the current Braves deficiencies are pretty glaring but you failed to mention throwing accuracy but I guess we shouldn’t quibble.

Perhaps these kids have gotten too deep into reading their own press releases and believing they are too good and don’t need to actually show up to win. The albatross hanging around their necks is the fact they are the current Division Champions and the standard by which other teams measure themselves.

The Mets have to feel pretty good about themselves at this point. Last night’s game which featured a short bullpen for them they took down the Braves in their home court.

My advice to the Braves is to not take the Pirates too lightly.

Smyly was pitching well, after Morton pitched well…but….when runners got on 2nd leading off an inning, and didn’t score and the bases were loaded again (it was bases loaded, not just 2nd and 3rd, right?) and no scoring….well….

Two things (amongst many) that stick in my head about Bobby… Calling for intentionally walking George Brett on 4 pitches with the bases loaded while in Toronto and the myriad of ejections during his career. Oh, and hearing him called out EASY to his pitchers when they would hit a ground ball to short to remind them not to pull a hammy running to first.

Here is an excerpt of a prospect report from Tomahawk Take’s Jake Mastroianni. I’m only reporting the bigger names we’re all keeping our eyes on, one from each level.

    Braves AAA — Gwinnett Stripers
(#2 prospect) OF Drew Waters — After a slow start, the top prospect got it going and has raised his average up to .300 with a .935 OPS. He has 3 home runs and 5 stolen bases. On Wednesday he went 4-5 with a double and a home run, and the day before that he went 3-5 with 2 home runs.

    Braves AA — Mississippi Braves
(not ranked, former college closer) RHP Brooks Wilson — The righty made 2 appearances this week striking out seven batters over 4.1 innings only allowing 2 hits and 1 walk. He’s yet to allow a run over 7.2 innings this year with 12 strikeouts. [More on Wilson, from Talking Chop’s Wayne Cavadi: “Brooks Wilson has now held his opponents scoreless in four appearances to start the year to go along with 12 strikeouts in 7.2 innings. Wilson is a strike-thrower and he’s very athletic — he won the John Olerud Award in 2018 as the best two-way player in college baseball — and is a bullpen piece to keep an eye on.”]

    Braves High-A — Rome Braves
(#10 prospect) OF Michael Harris — It wouldn’t be a Minor League update without mentioning MH2 (yea, I just made that up). He posted an OPS of 1.563 this past week! and hit .625 with a home run over 4 games. For the year he’s hitting .368 with a .944 OPS and 2 home runs. Enjoy him now, Rome.

    Braves Single-A — Augusta GreenJackets
(#21 prospect) RHP Spencer Strider — The Braves fourth-round pick from 2020 had an impressive outing this week striking out 10 batters in just 3.2 innings without allowing a hit. He’s now gone 6.2 innings this year without giving up a hit and has 17 strikeouts.

Solid game by the Braves this afternoon, very nice effort from Bryse Wilson. As a reward he will earn a bus ticket back to Gwinnett where he will reside for at least the next 10 days. I would suspect they will call up another reliever in his place as they have another multi day off week coming up. Off Monday before heading to Boston and off Thursday prior to seeing the Mets in New York next week-end.

Braves record is still sub 500 but clawing their way back to break even.

it was very nice to see back to back games where the braves just felt to be in complete control. Loved the interviews with Gary Matthews (He was SO very important to the Cubs 1984 season) Ryan Klesko too…wish they had given them more than a half inning each.
And I love the braves actually playing well in front of large crowds! It seemed after the weekend before(2 weekends?), the fans really lost interest. There were less than 20K I think , during the week. If they keep this up, the fans will be there in droves.

Like Skip Carey said, the best way to promote attendance is a winning team.

It is very depressing to spend 3 hours watching a game and have your team lose. It is a real downer. It is why there are so many Yankee and Dodger fans. Everyone wants to be on the winning side.

Heck, the South lost the civil war 175 years ago and the North still lords it over us.

The Braves have an opportunity to win this series against the Pirates today.

Great to have Acuna crush a lead off home run yesterday which turned out to be the winning run but still too many strike outs. It is really good to see Austin killing it.

Charlie Morton avoided his “one bad inning” last night by wiggling off the hook in the first after loading the bases with only one out and allowing an unearned run on a wild pitch/passed ball. Double plays are a thing.

So the biggest loss may well be the injury sustained by Ozuna sliding head first into third. Honestly, even when I was young and supple I could never get how to slide head first into anything. Heck, how can you spike a guy when you slide head first? But I digress…

The Braves scored just enough to eke out a win in Fenway and climb back to .500. Drew Smyley goes tonight against a resurgent Nick Pivetta. Well, somebody is due…

T’was funny how the Boston fans booed the Panda last night. Are the BoSox still paying him? I explained to Miss Jossie why they didn’t like him when he is so lovable..

Certain Braves continued to show signs of breaking out of their season long slump. Freddie had two hits and RAJ hit everything HARD. It just happened that someone was standing where he hit them a lot. Austin hit one late to the fence but despite an 0-fer, he made a stellar defensive play in the field. The guy is a stud…

Still no official word on whether or not Marcell Ozuna will be placed on the Injured List, but they did fly him home to ATL for evaluation. He’s gotta be IL’d, right? I mean, they are already playing with a short bench and have the DH in play in BOS taking away one of the remaining options. I don’t see how they can be shorthanded (pardon the pun) even for a couple of days.

    Options for replacement:
Well, the obvious call is Johan Camargo to once again return to the bench. I personally don’t like this option as Camargo couldn’t find a hit on Spotify.

Could this be the chance Orlando Arcia has needed to get a callup? Yes, he’s a middle IF by trade, but I’m betting he can play LF. I know he can hit.

Outside shot: Drew Waters gets his first callup. It could happen. Why not? This is a simple 10-day callup with no pressure to stick around. Seems like a good opportunity for the organization to ease the guy into a ML lineup for the proverbial “cup of coffee” to me. Then if he struggles, you can send him back after 10 days with no stigma of “failure”, just to return Ozuna to the lineup. And if he doesn’t struggle, he can gain confidence in his ability and look forward to his next opportunity while the organization can gain confidence in their prospect and look forward to plugging him in next year when Ozuna becomes the full-time DH..

Unofficial, but apparently Marcell Ozuna posted something on his personal Instagram stating the injury requires a 6 week recovery. No confirmation from anywhere, and I don’t speak Spanish so I can’t read what the post says myself.

Drew Waters time? For 10 days I could see them put on a Camargo band-aid. But 6 weeks? I pray they don’t try to get by for 6 weeks with Ender Inciarte or Ehire Adrianza or Abraham Almonte or the same. Need an impact bat, even if it’s down in the order. Ozzie and Riley should move up to 3-4. Let’s see Waters and bat him 7th. Why not?

Well, I am pretty sure they will draw from the taxi squad first as they are already cleared for the Covid protocols.

Also remember Riley can play the outfield so there is some flexibility on that point.

Impact bat???? LOLOLOLOLOL… Oh, okay sorry… I just sprayed soda out of my nose… Sigh, not sure where one is to be found in the scrap pile at this point. The Mets & Nats likely have already rummaged thru that pile pretty thoroughly I would imagine.

The slugger for hire supply is pretty thin right now across the board.

I would move Acuna out of the lead off spot and put him behind Freddie and use one of the Munchins as a lead off hitter. Just saying.

how come this never happened to Pete Rose, or Ricky Henderson? The late great Lou Brock always slid foot first, since he could immediately pop up and head to the next base if the ball got away from the infielder. (Heck I slid feet first, usually…on asphalt 😛 )

Yep, I imagine Atlanta will invoke the Hector Olivera rule on Ozuna. A shame but in today’s environment, it is the only answer. Evidently there has been trouble in the Ozuna household for a while. Regardless of the cause and events leading up to the incident, violence is never okay.

I guess my question is whether or not Ozuna’s contract contains a morals clause. No matter, the younger players cannot be allowed to be exposed to the toxic atmosphere. It does however help explain the flat play exhibited by the team last night.

I imagine there is boiler plate language in any player contract that gives them an out on a felony conviction. Hard to see a MLBPA appeal cracking it either. I’m betting he has stirred it up in Atlanta for the last time. And given the current political and social climate in this country, he might find his next deal on a different continent.

So, for the record, the Braves are now short their ace, starting catcher, and prized FA star for the year. Their homegrown hero is in the walk year of his deal and has not had any talks with the front office on an extension. The bullpen has more leaks than the White House. The new starting LF is the old utilityman. Ender Inciarte is an integral part of the lineup.

Yep, I’d say dumpster fire pretty much covers it.

I don’t mind Charlie Blackmon. The O’s have a couple of interesting looking young OF’s too. If the Cubs would lose a few more games, Kris Bryant might become available as a rental.

Published reports say that the police were called to the Ozuna home about a domestic disturbance and arrived to find the door opened. They entered and witnessed a violent act which I won’t describe here.

This will be difficult for him to get out of. He could easily face jail time under Georgia law.

According to DO’B: When he was played on the injured list, the Braves were still on the hook to pay Ozuna what he was owed. After his arrest, the team can place him on the league’s restricted list and therefore halt all payments otherwise due. According to ESPN’s Jess Passan, it’s highly likely that Atlanta takes this route as the investigation into the Marcell Ozuna arrest continues.

ok, clearly the excitement about the possibility of trading for Charlie Blackmon, is taking off like a runaway freight train! 😛
Anyways….to me, he’s kinda like a slightly younger, more powerful Nick M.
he only hit .184 in April, but .310 in may. Like many a player this year, his splits are all wrong. .277 vs lefties, .239 vs righties. .233 at Coors field, .270 on the road (but no homers on the road) The Rockies have also been historically bad on the road, like 4 wins, 22 losses!!!!
The rockies have no chance to win, and I am sure at 34, he’s dying to go somewhere that has a chance to go to fairly deep in the playoffs. I wonder if they would want someone back to replace him (have no idea on their minor league prospects) or if they would want pitching in return.
hmmm, 42 Mil owed the next 2 years…the Rockies would have to eat a ton of moola, but…if/when is Ozuna off the books they could at least go half of that????

I was thinking, after looking up his MLB numbers, that the braves as an organization has lost it’s darned minds…, but…I clicked on his numbers in Gwinnett, 19 games, .403 BA, 19 RBIs…ok, give him a chance, what the heck https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/05/braves-select-abraham-almontes-contract.html#respond

IMO, Almonte is not the organization’s long term answer to LF. But I do think it signals something significant in that they aren’t bending it over to Ehire Adrianza, who is much more valuable off the bench and himself not an everyday player. If Adrianza becomes the everyday LF, the team has essentially weakened itself in 2 places. I see Almonte as a placeholder unt a more permanent aswer can be found. And I’m ok with that.

    Kevin Gausman
2019 with the braves 3-7 6.19 ERA in 80 innings
2021 with the Giants 6.-0 1.40 ERA in 70 innings (finally great at 30?)

Mike Foltynewicz (less of an Hmmm)
2019 with braves 8-6 4.54 ERA 21 starts, only 117 innings (less than 5 innings per)
    2021 with Rangers 1-6 4.30 ERA but, 11 starts, 63 innings
maybe we were wrong thinking Folty was strictly a headcase…he’s 29

Can you believe he’s only 30????
5-2 2.44 ERA also for the Giants (after 2 bad seasons for the Reds and Dodgers)

Oh, the name popped back into the ol’ noggin’
Mike Minor. Hmmm! Not as good as thought. Funny, MLBTV always shows his good starts

Well, the fun just keeps on coming…

    Ken Rosenthal:

After reading the police account of Marcell Ozuna’s arrest for assaulting his wife, the natural reaction for many people might be that he should never wear a baseball uniform again. But even if the Braves wish to take action against Ozuna, they will not do so before Major League Baseball completes its investigation of his arrest on Saturday for domestic violence. And they likely cannot void his contract, either.

The Uniform Player Contract (UPC) in baseball says a team can terminate a contract if a player shall, “fail, refuse or neglect to conform his personal conduct to the standards of good citizenship and good sportsmanship or to keep himself in first-class physical condition or to obey the club’s training rules.” It also allows a team to terminate a deal if a player shall “fail, refuse or neglect to render his services hereunder or in any manner materially breach this contract.”

Teams, in addendums to the UPC outlining specific prohibited activities, sometimes include convictions for criminal acts. But the union has long viewed such guarantee language and other addendums as unenforceable because they are not collectively bargained, sources say. And the sport’s domestic-violence policy, which establishes the blueprint for penalties in such matters, would appear to take precedence over the UPC’s reference to “the standards of good citizenship.” The policy does not list the voiding of a contract as a potential form of discipline.

No team has even attempted to terminate the contract of any of the 13 players previously suspended for domestic violence, knowing efforts to convert guaranteed money into non-guaranteed in other situations have rarely resulted in anything more than partial success.

Ozuna’s case, obviously, is in a separate category, and the police officers’ witnessing of the altercation distinguishes it from even most DV cases. According to the Georgia Commission on Family Violence, his wife cannot drop charges once law enforcement submits them to the prosecutor. But unless Ozuna pleads guilty or serves time in jail, the Braves almost certainly will be obligated to pay him any money he is owed beyond a possible suspension. Technically, Ozuna’s status would be not unlike those of players who violate baseball’s Joint Drug Agreement in that once he served his penalty, he would be a member of the sport in good standing.

The league’s investigation into Ozuna [which began today according to published reports] figures to take at least several months. Any court proceeding almost certainly will last longer. The Braves, then, can delay any determination on Ozuna for some time. But eventually, they must decide if they can accept the cost — financial and otherwise — of him remaining on their team.

    😡

Okay, a couple of days removed from the actual event, here are a couple of observations/opinions by yours truly on the Ozuna situation.
    1. Regardless, the Braves are on the hook for Marcel’s salary until the league completes it’s investigation. That will run until he is off his injury restriction. When he is cleared to resume baseball activities, the league will formally suspend him pending completion of whatever.

    1. Any defense attorney worth his salt (and a guy making millions is not going to be stuck with your typical public defender will claim the anger issues are/were as the results of a reaction to whatever pain medication being prescribed as a result of his injury. Just saying….

    2. Evidently the issue between Ozuna and his wife has been ongoing. Remember it was his wife who charged with assault last year. I am not defending the guy, it looks bad and it is bad but maybe it is best for all parties to just chill until we can get a few more facts.

    3. All that said, if I were the Braves, I would not be figuring Ozuna’s return this season.

    • 405 Vox O'Reasoñ June 1, 2021 at 6:34 pm

It’s very unlikely that Ozuna will return this season. And as long as he is either under investigation or suspended, he will reside on the Restricted List during which he will not be receiving checks. Even if Ozuna catches all the breaks and has a speedy trial and investigation, he’s still most likely looking at being suspended for the balance of 2021. So as Gil said, the Braves do not need to figure on him returning this season… and may have at the very least the balance of the money owed to him for 2021 to spend on a rental OF.

I see 2 possible rental OF’s for the Braves to kick the tires on, one being already mentioned by Ber… Charlie Blackmon. The other is Nick Castellanos, depending on where the Reds realistically find themselves in July. Right now they are 4th in the NL Central, 5.5 games back of the Cubs and 4 games under .500. And as always, their pitching is the weak point of the team. If they should slide anymore, they may punt on the season if they can get a young pitcher back in the deal.

As for Blackmon… the Rockies are bad with no hope of going anywhere this season. They might give Blackmon away for a foam tomahawk and an Ozzie Albies bobblehead. I wouldn’t mind seeing a revitalized Chuck Nazty running around like a wild man on a contending team. He might also revitalize a gut-punched team that could use a little wind back in their sails. It’s been a tough season in A-town.

I would LOVE to see Nick C here! I think I was hoping we might trade for him a year or 2 ago….a doubles machine, who of course hits some homers

the Nats catcher is doing something odd….He’s behind the plate, stooping, so to speak. crouched, basically on his toes….seems a catcher doing something like this, can move to both his left, and right AND STRAIGHTEN UP. Not just reach the ol’ arm out to your left or right…

It’s getting embarrassing to watch this kid catch. 1st passed ball was called a wild pitch…for some reason. 2nd one, a good, in the normal catcher position catcher might have gotten to by being able to straighten up, something a guy sitting on his leg, cannot do.

I really hope they aren’t afraid to tell him to change his ways…for whatever reason they might have.

Langeliers is the catcher of the future here. Contreras can hit the ball for sure, and is most likely going to be the #2 guy that will still catch +/- 45 games unless he’s traded elsewhere out of necessity. Defensively, Langeliers could be starting now. The org is just allowing his bat to develop at a natural pace, and it seems to be doing just that. Patience is a virtue here even if it’s not necessarily easy.

Just a thought… but we seem to be focusing on OF’s to replace Ozuna’s bat. Let’s not limit ourselves to just OF, and let’s consider that Austin Riley proved he’s a capable defender in LF himself. YEs, I think he carries a near Gold Glove at the hot corner. But if you can add a potent bat by moving him to the grass, wouldn’t you consider it?

All that said, here is a recently published article with about 8 possible OF names to consider. I think we have probably mentioned most of them already. Anything would be better than Abraham Almonte/Ender Inciarte/Ehire Adrianza… with respect to Adrianza. But he’s most valuable off the bench in a utility role. I’ve already seen enough of Almonte. And there is no need to beat Ender’s dead horse.

In most cases, trades of any real substance do not occur in June. For one, many teams haven’t yet decided if they are sellers or buyers. Cincinnati and Seattle likely fall into that category. Other teams prefer to wait closer to the deadline to draw more suitors and thus increase their return. In other words, there most likely is not any real help on the near horizon unless a team like Colorado or Baltimore, who are clearly out of the hunt already, see an opportunity to come in and poach some of our young prospect capital.

Ah, but that’s where the rubber meets the road, right? This year more than ever, Alex is going to have to be wiling to let go of some of those prized top prospects. If we want to gain a player like Mitch Haniger or Anthony Santander, the ask is going to start with Drew Waters or Cristian Pache. And a top arm is going to be added as well.

But we know that right? The question is, would you be willing to trade a potential star like Waters for the proven performance of Santander? After all, banking on prospects is always a little risky, and it’s always “kicking the can down he road”. If we want to win now, in a real window of opportunity, can we afford to keep waiting on these young guys to blossom? Pache is obviously not ready at the plate. Waters is still another season away, if that.

The same can be said of the Kyles (Muller and Wright). At some point you hit prospect fatigue and you just are tired of hearing about them but never seeing them break through. And that’s not just fans. It affects their trade value as well. Does Wright have the same value in 2021 as he did in 2019? Not hardly. At soem point a decision must be made.

I believe we are approaching a fork in the road where “win now” and “bright future” split. We have to make a decision and stop trying to travel both roads. You can only really move effectively in one direction, or you don’t actually move at all.

One good start by Tucker Davidson could be considered fortunate timing. Two straight good starts by Davidson has to be worth noting. I believe he has earned another start. Should he perform well in start #3… well I’d say that is a pattern and worthy of taking a chance on with regular starts. And if Drew Smyly falters again in his next start, you have to get off that boat. He teased us with one good outing, but the balance of the season simply does not justify continuing to hope against hope for another bright spot in an otherwise dull season. As it currently looks, the rotation rolls forward with Anderson/Smyly/Morton/Fried/Davidson. Charlie Morton has likewise been a bit disappointing, but at last he’s eating a few innings and for the most part still resembles the back of his bubble gum card. (It’s that one bad inning each game that is killing him.) Keeping Davidson aboard can render Smyly surplus and out of the rotation. Bryse Wilson likewise has pitched well enough to merit future starts, and should get those when the 5th spot rolls around. I was hoping AA could add another proven starter in July, but I think the Ozuna situation surely has altered those plans. Finding a bat for LF has to be job #1 now. We may have to hope this cobbled together rotation can hold serve enough to get us through 162 games. Thank God for Tucker Davidson and Bryse Wilson. They’ve given the team some quality innings and some hope. Let the kids play, right?

Notable performances yesterday from each level in the minors:

    AAA:
Drew Waters, LF: 1-for-4, 1 BB (Notable for no K’s. Currently slashing .272/.374/.424)

    AA:
Shea Langeliers, C: 2-for-4, 1 R, 1 BB (He’s on an tear over the last week or so. Really… no hyperbole.)

    high-A:
Michael Harris, CF: 2-for-4, 1 SB (Of course.)

    low-A:
Who am I kidding? I don’t know any of these guys. There is one intriguing dude down there though. Here is the summary via MiLB recap: Roddery Munoz, SP: 1.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K – Munoz came out strong, needing just eight pitches, seven of which were strikes, to get through the first. He was clocked at 99 but was also very slider heavy. That slider can be a godsend or can be his demise, which it was in the second when he got dinged for four runs. It’s early but watching how dominant he is in short spurts tends to lean more to the reliever profile.
    Roddery Munoz… remember that name.

      Second attempt at this thought:
Be very leery when looking at stats for pitchers in the low minors. A lot of time those kids are working on stuff like they would be in spring training like getting a feel for a slider. Results are that the hitters get a chance to recognize a pitch plus a perchance for hangers.

What I want to know is velocity and movement of their fastball.

I could see Smyly in a swingman role similar to what Josh Tomlin fills… a veteran presence and an arm that can give you multiple innings in emergency situations.

Tomlin, speaking of, might be trade bait to a team that is out of contention but needs cheap pitching. He’s cheap for both 2021 and in the team option for 2022. Not as a feature, of course, but as an add-on. Think Drew Waters + Josh Tomlin + other filler to Baltimore for Anthony Santander… or something similar.

Santander had a very good 2020, baseed on Homers and RBI’s (not that anyone cares about RBI’s , of course :/ ) 11 HR’s 32 RBI’s, .261 BA in 37 games. But, in 207 games, he has a career .253 BA, and a .292 OBP.
3 HR’s and 11 RBI’s in 29 games so far (is he often injured? Or not playing full time ? )
he’s 26, and of course, going to a “winning” team so to speak (hey Baltimore lost something like 12 in a row so..)
It’s just the old conundrum. I agree totally about sitting on prospects too long, but is this the guy to give up Drew Waters for?

agree completely Gil! Had fears of a 3 game sweep, blowouts of 10-1, 11-2, etc felt likely.
the bullpen is much better of late…and while the offense still isn’t firing on all cylinders, there are timely hits. Very happy for Abraham Almonte…it’s got to be soooo hard to stick with baseball when you are nearly 32 , and only had 42 AB’s in the majors the past 2 seasons…then, you hit .400 forcing the braves to bring you up ,and…you don’t hit. Imagine how that must feel. Any minute they are going to release you…is this your last chance in the majors? Heck, so many teams seem to pull guys off the scrap heap and have success (the Yankees come to mind) why not the braves…did ya know Almonte has a .500 OBP at this minute???

Now the Dodgers have to be a bit wary of the braves after the playoffs, and this year (so far) But, to see them in the playoffs, likely going to have to win the division, as it stands, the Dodgers, Pads and Giants, are going to be the 3 teams to either win the west, or get W.C. slots….

One thing stuck out for me with the Dodgers, they were willing to put singles on the board and did not feel compelled to go for the downs on every swing.

I sometimes think Acuna wants to be the big dog and go deep on every swing and pitchers a savvy to him. He is so Andrew Jones in that respect.

If he has finally tamed his control, he could be a real weapon out of the big league bullpen. But he could also be a valuable trade chip. Let’s hope he stays on this pace for another few weeks.

It was a very tight strike zone last night. Some calls missed big time. I’ll concede those balls on the edges because the ump does not have the benefits of the box thingee we have on TV but some were missed badly.

While Acuna’s homer was impressive, Austin’s was more significant.

I have seen some real improvement by WillieC over the last couple of weeks. Perhaps that can be attributed to coaching by Sal Fasano? Regardless, he’s proving to be a solid contributor. It’s fun to watch the kids emerge, isn’t it?

Gerrit Cole spoke volumes by saying very little, didn’t he? Maybe the worst answer ever given in a post-game press conference although he probably protected his own hide in the blatant non-answer. And the worst part, he’s a MLBPA executive.

Don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, then see for yourself…

The kid can pitch, that’s never been in doubt. His command has been the thing that has kept him from taking the next step… but that’s normal for almost all pitching prospects. Yesterday over 6.0 IP, he walked only 1 against 4 Ks. He threw 90 pitches, 59 of which were strikes. This is the 3rd straight strong outing since his callup, and he appears to have turned the corner. Naturally he’ll have a stinker somewhere along the way, as all rookies do, but it looks like Tuck has come to stay. Good for him, and surely good for the Braves. Quite timely for both.

Speaking of pitchers who appear to have turned a corner, big (and he is big) Kyle Muller tossed 6.0 IP yesterday with 2 BBs vs 6 Ks, and 53 strikes in 86 pitches thrown. He too seems to be rounding into his own with his command over his last 3 or 4 starts. Great timing for both of these kids.

The story of the season is playing out today… the Braves do NOT have a closer. Period. It’s not Will Smith and it’s not Chris Martin.

And as I type this, Martin has now given up the 3rd run of the 10th inning to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. All without recording an out. This sucks.

When Mike Soroka went down for what is most likely the entire season, we had Huascar Ynoa step up and be the bright spot. Then he got in a fight with a stationary object and lost. Then our off-season big ticket FA, who signed the biggest FA in team history, got in a fight with his wife… and lost, at least from a life standpoint. And until the trial is concluded and a sentence is dispensed, the team has no idea how much of that big ticket they’re still in the hook for. (At least they should be clear for the balance of this season anyway.) Our MVFree is having an unexplainably poor season, albeit with a HR here and there.

But there are still bright spots. Ronnie is freaky good. Dansby and Ozzie are having solid seasons both in the field and at the plate. Austin Riley is having a breakout (All-Star) season. Both Bryse Wilson and Tucker Davidson are proving they can hang with the big boys. And Ian Anderson has solidified himself as a Top 10 in all of MLB.

Through all of that, the team has hung around .500 and within striking distance of the division leading Mets of they could just put together one of their patented win streaks.

    But there’s the problem.

Until they find a way to plug the leaks in the back end of the bullpen – and to a lesser degree find a close replacement for Ozuna’s bat – they aren’t capable o putting a string together.

Alex has a real job on his hands this year. At least the needs are well defined: at least 1 if not 2 reliable late inning arms and a ML caliber starting LF. I think the LF will be the easy part. The arms… not so much.

I would say someone has to get mad but that route hasn’t worked out so good for the Braves has it? i.e. Yano and Ozuna…

Still, someone needs to light a fire under their ass like McGriff did back in the 90’s, Maybe Chip or Jeff could set the press box on fire or something.

So, the Braves face off with the Fish this weekend, any think DuVall will get hot?

Wow, I sure picked a great game to miss. (Funny, my Dad said around 4:30 yesterday, you’ve forgotten something. Oh yeah Dad, what? The braves were playing a day game! (Amazing that he remembered, a cool/to luke warm braves fan at best-an aside, since he has to watch at least part of the games he is quick to point out when it’s not the braves broadcasters how boring the game is when it’s not them)

So, Tuesday, my friend Dave and I watched the game at TwistedTaco til about 10:40 (they basically close at 10, but it’s a soft close on the food side) and it looked like they were going to lose. Got home, and they won! Then I got to see the Phils win in the 9th for game 2, and…was fortunate to miss yesterdays game….great that we have given the Phils a huge boost of confidence, isn’t it?

And…what V said…it has been a crazy year. F.F. seems to guess wrong, like Dansby does in a slump….
V, so very many things have gone wrong with the team, it’s hard to recall them all (sorta like our wonderful country :/ ) Don’t forget, we also lost our main catcher to boot!

Funny, some days I find I am behind on reading the blog, read a ton of things, get ready to post something, and then…I remember I have to get stuff wrapped to mail out before the mail….person arrives, or need to get stuff at the store, work on my old car,(as much as I can with my bad back/shoulder/wrist) help Dad with something…you all know, life…so, I should have written something, but I didn’t, and now what I was going to write is kinda stale.
    Still tasty though! 😛

Yep, W.C. has picked up as of late. I heard during a game that Eddie Perez was also working with him…glad he’s listening to them…I was afraid he might have been too stubborn. May have a glut of catchers before you know it….not the worst problem to have.

Good news from AAA, courtesy of Tomahawk Take’s Jake Mastroianni:

Christian Pache: Since returning from the injured list, Pache has performed well at the plate with 8 hits, including 2 home runs, in 23 at-bats. However, he hasn’t walked and has 7 strikeouts. His approach at the plate still needs improvement, but good to see him hitting the ball hard.

Drew Waters: The other talented outfield prospect has picked it up as of late hitting .326 over his last 43 at-bats with 6 walks and 15 strikeouts, showing that improved plate discipline. Only two of his hits over that time have gone for extra bases, though. Would love to see his power numbers tick up.

Kyle Muller: The 6-foot-7 lefty has given up just 2 earned runs on 5 hits and 4 walks with 12 strikeouts in 11 innings over his preview two starts.

For all those folks waiting for the Cubs to collapse and become sellers….. The Braves are more likely to trade Freddie than for that to happen…

    SIGH!

The Braves desperately need a strike throwing closer. Soft tossers who need help from the umps just aren’t cutting it. I would rather have a guy who misses in the strike zone throwing 98 mph than a guy who throws an 88 mph hanger…

before yesterdays game, I was going to mention, at what point, how many losses would Snit be blamed for this season, and canned for some young guy, even more immersed in fWAR, rWAR, and WARP….I think the team must feel the pressure to perform/win, or the manager they really like will be shown the door.
I know there have been injuries, but what team hasn’t had injuries? The first place Mutts I think are still missing their starting 3 in the outfield….

    Just a very odd season.

Yes, upper management is always looking for some wounded to shoot… While I do question some of Snit’s use of Will Smith in non- closing situations, perhaps he doesn’t have anyone else who he trust to hold a 5 run lead in the ninth.

Nope, the blame lies squarely with Liberty Media. You don’t cut payroll and expect to hold serve when everyone else improves their team.

My advice to Liberty is to sell high while they can and make buku money if they feel compelled to turn a profit. I am old enough to remember how woeful the Braves were prior to Ted Turner buying the team. Those Braves were dreadful and cheap or maybe cheap and dreadful… the two are synonymous when it come to sports teams.

      Now, about yesterday… good win…

Well, if it’s true, then it’s nice to get a little bit of positive news on an off day. WilleC has done a really nice job in Td’A’s place, but I’d rather have them both on my team. We all knew Ynoa would be back from his “break”, but Td’A and Soroka were a little less plausible. I hope this comes to fruition. Even if Soroka comes back in a relief role in much the same way Adam Wainright did a few years back, he’d add great value to the staff and to the team.

Excerpts from an interview with AA, by Jeff Schultz of The Athletic:

So you believe you’re getting [Mike] Soroka and [Travis] d’Arnaud back in August?

We’ve gotten good news on Soroka. He was re-examined and he doesn’t need, at this moment, any more surgical procedures and he’s rehabbing and strengthening. He still has a long road to go. But we’re optimistic — we don’t have a timeframe specifically. But sometime, we think by the end of August, he could be back with us. We’ve always tried to be respectful of not putting times on it because we don’t know how guys are going to heal, but he’s doing well. He’s throwing off a knee. He’s progressing. And if you’re projecting two to two and a half months from now, d’Arnaud and Ynoa as well. I expect all three of those guys back before the end of the season.

So here’s the million-dollar-question, or maybe a few-million-dollar-question: Do you have the freedom to add payroll at the deadline if you want to?

Things have definitely turned for the better in Georgia and across ballparks. You’ve seen attendance. So we have the resources to add payroll to the club. The outlook is much different than it was in the offseason when there was a lot of uncertainty. We started the year, I think, at 25 percent capacity and we moved up incrementally and we’re up to 100 percent. So we’re absolutely in a position and I’ve been told that as well, that we can add payroll at the trade deadline.

Freddie Freeman said in April he didn’t want to deal with the distraction of negotiations now and talks were tabled. Can I assume they’re still tabled?

I’m consistent with this stuff. Freddie is great, and he’s made it very clear he wants to be here, and we’ve certainly said it in the past: Our goal has not changed. Our goal is for Freddie Freeman to stay here long-term. Beyond that, I’ve never discussed negotiations.

I totally get that. It’s one of those things where the concern is out there that he could leave.

I understand. Anyone with a contract concern, that’s going to be a topic. But I can tell you our goal is for Freddie Freeman to be here well past 2021 and that hasn’t changed, and I don’t expect that will ever change. Beyond that, can I say much more than that? No.

Reading about MLB’s plan to crack down on sticky stuff on baseballs. Think AA is sweating his decision to sign Drew Smyly? After all, there had to be a reason for the big increase in Drew’s spin rate last season. Without spin, his pitches become batting practice fastballs.

On a brighter note, fewer wild pitches… maybe…

Of course guys like Yadia will help out his pitchers with the magic velcro chest protector…

Well, we knew he bullpen was a mess, but now it’s a full blown grease fire. I hate to ask this question, mainly because it’s something I could research myself… but I honestly don’t think I can stomach doing the research. How many leads have been blown in the 7th inning or later?

If we’re honest, the true answer doesn’t actually require a specific number and can simply be defined as “way too many”.

That covers the bullpen; now… the rotation.

Big Tuck goes down early with “forearm tightness”. I’m glad initial tests were “positive”, but I’m also waiting for the results of the MRI. How many times have we heard that a pitcher left with “forearm tightness” only to find he has a UCL injury?

Can we expect to realistically contend with a rotation that includes 2 good (sometimes very good) youngsters, 2 mediocre (sometimes just plain bad) veterans, and a revolving door in the #5 slot where we shuttle in the AAA flavor of the week?

If we’re honest, the true answer is clearly “not a chance”.

    And now… the lineup.

As we broke camp, we thought we’d have a formidable offense that looked something like this:

    Ronnie
    Ozzie
    MVFree
    Ozuna
    d’Arnaud
    Riley
    Swanson
    Pache

… but as the season bloomed, we’ve been relegated to this lineup:

    Ronnie
    Slumping Freddie
    Ozzie
    Riley
    Swanson
    Abraham Almonte
    William Contreras
    Guillermo Heredia

Wait. Let’s see if we can line that up a little better to get the full effect:

We replaced Travis d’Arnaud, who led all NL catchers in offense last season with rookie Contreras.
We replaced 2020 NL HR leader Marcell Ozuna with Abraham Almonte.
We replaced young hopeful Crstian Pache with reclamation project Guillermo Heredia.
And our MVP from 2020, and perennial anchor, can’t shake a slump that has now hung on into mid-June.

Thank the good Lord for Ronnie being All-World and Riley having a breakout season. Where would we be if not for those 2? An while we’re on this positive swing, is there a better middle IF duo than Ozzie and Dans? I love watching those 2 guys play the game every night.

I saw the new kid pitch, looked good, but it was 6-3 Red Sox.

I’m gonna give Kyle Muller a little bit of a break since that was his ML debut. Paul Byrd said something to the effect that when a kid comes out for the first time his arms are tingling, his legs are heavy and his heart is racing. I don’t doubt it. Yes, he gave up some hits, but he was around the plate and his stuff is really good.

So, did Bryse Wilson run over Snit’s dog or what?

I don’t see Muller as a potential rotation piece. His stuff points more toward short stints than long… and I believe he has a future as a late inning reliever. When you have a 6’7″ lefty coming into the game throwing triple-digit gas, you ought to play to his strength. You just have to break him in gently.

Wilson will probably still get Tucker Davidson’s next start. They would not have recalled the next starter 4 days ahead of his next start anyway. Chances are Muller will be sent back to make room for Wilson prior to the next turn of the rotation. Well, that is unless one of the other ineffective pieces suddenly has some mysterious shoulder discomfort that lands him on the IL. That’s certainly a possibility.

To be fair about Muller, two doubles down the line is more about positioning than pitching.

I am more worried about Minter yielding a long home run but at least he didn’t walk him.

Actually, it is the entire shambles of a pitching staff right now. I still say the culprit is Liberty Media. Snit can only run with the horses he has been given. This team was short changed from the get go.

What is it going to take? A willingness to spend some money it takes to buy a short term solution.

At least Freddie seems to be breaking out of his slump.

Base running mistakes… something often learned from by playing in the minors. I can’t blame a kid who has been look to be a savior of the franchise for wanting to do good. Learn from it and move on. The other side made two perfect throws so there is that.

Disappointing yes but not as much as giving up 10 runs two nights in a row.

I don’t see any way around the fact that Alex must find a way to make moves for all 3 glaring needs… starting pitcher, closer, OF bat. And when I try to prioritize the 3, I simply cannot place any greater importance on one over the others. I might give a slight edge to the bullpen given the recent glaring bullpen blowups… but if you can’t score runs it won’t matter and if you can’t keep the other team from starting the game with a 4 run lead it won’t matter often.

If I had to absolutely prioritize today, though, I’d go closer 1st, starter 2nd and bat 3rd. My reasoning being that on paper we have some good arms in the bullpen, they just aren’t performing. And some of that may be attributed to the fact that the roles are somewhat nebulous. Exactly who is the closer anyway? Even though the game has evolved over recent years, the tried and true formula that made O’Flaherty/Venters/Kimbrel so dominant still works today. Even over the last 2 years you knew that the 9th inning belonged to Mark Melancon. I want to blame Snit a little, but as Gil says… he can only work with what he has, and he doesn’t have a true closer. Thus, no one has a true role. Maybe, just maybe if we had that 9th inning door slammer the rest of the pen would sort itself out.

And even though the big bat to slot in behind Freddie is still a need, this offense seems to find ways to score runs. After all, we scored 8 in each of the last 2 games. Of course, the Sox scored 10 in each, underscoring the more pressing need for a closer and starter.

Speaking of starter, if we can’t find a guy to come in and throw at least 6 innings consistently, none of the bullpen moves will matter anyway. They’ll all be thoroughly exhausted by September.

I don’t see any way around the fact that Alex must find a way to make moves for all 3 glaring needs… wait, I said that already didn’t I? Maybe it’s true.

A lot of people giving grief to Snit over calling out Acuna… Well, sometimes you have to do that to a wild kid. It is called being a motivator. I am pretty sure Acuna is not that fragile. If is is, he is not the guy you need leading your team.

And yeah, it was pretty dumb play by Acuna nut hey, he is trying. You just have to always know the score and keep your head in the game. It’s a process…

I am sure he’s a great guy, a leader even, but…he’s not very good. 5.40 ERA in April. 6.35 in May. 0.00 in June, til today, but that was in 5 1/3 innings. Why bring him in with runners on, to Goldy? How is that going to work out? I would have rather risked Bryce, cuz you know, he might, just might strike him out. sigh!!!!

While it’s easy to find fault with Snit’s bullpen usage, I still remember how Bobby would constantly use the same guys repeatedly so by the time August rolled around, they had nothing left in the tank.

As painful as it may seem, Shane Green either has to be pitched into shape or they cut him loose. As for Newk, it is just sad a kid with so much talent continues to fail. I f anyone has an answer, please make it known.

Is it too early to point out that Shane Greene has a 19.64 ERA and 2.455 WHIP? It is? OK… then you can forget I mentioned that glaring fact.

What about Sean Newcomb’s 6.41 ERA and 1.780 WHIP? That one you can hang onto.

I follow a guy on Twitter named David Lee who is the founder/writer at bravesprospects.com, a site dedicated to the Braves minor league system and the draft. He has been gushing all over Spencer Strider this season. The only other guy that has gotten nearly as much chat is another young pitcher named Darius Vines, who moved up from Augusta to take Strider’s former rotation slot in Rome. There is still some exciting talent lurking in the system… just not as much as there once was.

The way I see it, Alex has a lot of heavy lifting to do over the next 5 weeks. He needs to acquire 2 relievers, a starter, and an OF. And I haven’t even begun to talk about the bench, which has an obvious hole even when it’s short. What happens when the team realizes it can’t keep a 4 man bench down the stretch? Johan Camargo? Yeah… that’s the answer.

    2 relievers
    Starter
    LF
    Bench

That’s a hefty shopping list, but without it we might as well be July sellers.

Here is an honest assessment of the current roster:

    Rotation:
Charlie Morton – seems to have turned a corner
Drew Smyly – same as Uncle Charlie
Max Fried – I know he’s on the IL, but he’ll be back soon
Ian Anderson – Thank God for Ian Anderson!
Kyle Muller – part of the future, but not the present NEED TO FILL

    Bullpen:
Will Smith – not a closer, but the closest thing we have
    Chris Martin – inconsistent
Shane Greene – should have remained a FA
AJ Minter – was great, then was bad… no idea but better than some of the others
Luke Jackson – Thank God for Luke Jackson!
Tyler Matzek – not the 2020 version
Josh Tomlin – I have no idea what to even say about him
Sean Newcomb – Why is this cat still on the ML roster? NEED TO FILL
Edgar Santana – Why is this cat still on the ML roster? NEED TO FILL
Ty Tice – Why is this cat still on the ML roster, especially when the bench is short? NEEDS TO JUST GO AWAY

    Lineup:
Ronald Acuña, Jr. – Thank God for Ronnie!
Freddie Freeman – his upswing is on the upswing
Ozzie Albies – Thank God for Ozzie Albies!
Abraham Almonte – I think I’d keep him on the bench over current options; not a starter NEED TO FILL
Austin Riley – possible All-Star before he came back to earth a little; solid contributor has turned the corner
Dansby Swanson – Thank God for Dansby Swanson!
William Contreras – has been OK for a rook; should be the backup to Travis d’Arnaud
Guillermo Heredia – the best thing I can say about him is that he’s better than Ender Inciarte

    Bench:
Kevan Smith NEED d’ARNAUD TO RETURN
Ehere Adrianza – has cooled since a hot start; still versatile
Pablo Sandoval – has frozen since a hot start; might replace with Almonte
Ender Inciarte – so tired of beating this dead horse NEED TO FILL
    NEED TO FILL 5th SPOT

To emphasize an earlier post, we need to add 1 starter and hope that Morton, Smyly, Fried and Anderson all stay healthy. We need to add 2 decent bullpen arms and shorten the bullpen from 10 to 9. We need to add that extra player to the bench and it does not need to be Johan Camargo. We need an outside addition and we need one of Almonte or Heredia to move to the bench. And we need a real ML caliber OF starter. Minimum.

V, can’t agree with anything above. Finally, Morton is rounding into form practically mid season, and Smyly too. But, as I worried early on, they have not made 30, 35 starts in ages so….have to have another starter, or 2-3 kids round into form. I just wish Bryce would get 5-6 starts in a row. I don’t think he will get consistent til he knows mentally, don’t worry, one bad start won’t mean back to the minors. Or even 1 good start.
Thing is, all sorts of teams are going to need a starter , 2-3 bullpen arms, and a everyday outfielder…so….good luck A.A.

I know he’s not a finished product yet, but I really like what I’m seeing in Kyle Muller. I haven’t been this impressed by a young pitcher since Ian Anderson. Muller has special stuff. Easy, repeatable motion. Ball comes out easy. Has the ability to still throw hard without max effort. And has the poise to match. This kid is legit.

Yep, I was a very enjoyable game to watch and yes, Muller was very impressive. Only a ball that popped out of Acuna’s glove that was scored a hit prevented it from no hitting the Reds. Like most rookies, he has not quite learned how to pitch efficiently but that will come. He looked like a big league pitcher out there.

Nice to see Freddie returning to form and I become more impressed by Riley every time I see him field a hot grounder he scoops up smoothly. While he makes me a little nervous when he throw to first but that will smooth out too I expect.

Two nice plays afield by Ender, I guess he needs to earn his keep somewhere on the field.

For sure, the line up is not that deep. Lots of places for opposing pitchers to go for out IMHO…

The Braves have waited around long enough for the Nits to overtake them. Still, they are only at .500 but that is 3 better than the Braves. I don’t expect the Bravos to sweep the Mets this week but 2 of 3 is a must.

It has been pretty frustrating to see the Braves climb back to .500 only to fall away again and again. I guess this is to be expected with such a weak lower half of the line up.

I think the team has placed a high priority on all 3 games. That’s why they pushed Morton back for Game 1. We have Morton/Fried/Smyly going. I realize they’ll have deGrom starting one of those games – against Smyly I think – but he is only human and can have a bad game just like any other pitcher. (Can’t he?)

    Robert Murray, FanSided:

Rival executives say that two of the most aggressive teams looking for bullpen help have been the Atlanta Braves and Toronto Blue Jays. With the Cubs and Nationals unlikely to sell, it takes Craig Kimbrel, Brad Hand and Daniel Hudson from the trade market. The best reliever now expected to be available is Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Richard Rodriguez, who is already drawing trade interest, as well as Los Angeles Angels righty Raisel Iglesias, Texas Rangers righty Ian Kennedy and Seattle Mariners righty Kendall Graveman, among others.

The Braves need to be aggressive in their pursuit. The bullpen isn’t the only need, but it’s the most glaring need.

In the mean time, everyone will be playing with the same handicap.

I was surprised to learn that Acuna uses one of the lightest bats in MLB. I wonder if he has experiment with a heavier bat? It would reduce his dependence on optimum contact for optimum results.

He’s a big dude that throws hard and misses bats, and I certainly don’t hate what I’ve seen big Kyle Muller doing since his arrival. What would Huascar look like as a closer?

that would be great news! I still look at the back of the baseball card(so to speak) and we have 2 older pitchers that while pitching much better of late, don’t pitch a lot of innings per year….and if we are going to have to play catch-up all year long, when can you rest them? Unless you go to a 6 man rotation, which might make some real sense if the braves can’t get a bullpen arm or two (everyone and their brother needs help )

I must admit… last night’s late inning loss has finally made me doubt this team’s ability to catch all the other flawed teams in this division. That was a game they could have won. That was a game they should have won. How are you going to overtake the guys ahead of you when you can’t even close out a winnable head-to-head game? Now they have to win the next 2 – including tomorrow’s game against Jacob deGrom – to even make a small incremental step forward.

But honestly, how much should we really expect from a team that features Abraham Almonte and Guillermo Heredia as 2/3 of their starting OF? And how much should we really expect from a bullpen that has been consistently bad from Game 1?

I honestly just blame myself for expecting anything different.

When I woke up around 12:30 I checked the score, Sure enough I found the Braves lost 4-3. Minter giving up the winning run. I saw that coming too.

I’m revising my wish list. Instead of 2 relievers, 1 starter, and 1 OF, now I want 2 relievers and 2 OF. I’ll go with the rotation, warts and all. If I’ve learned nothing else about this team over the last couple of weeks it’s that no lead is safe and that you cannot field a ML lineup that includes 2 AAAA players and expect to contend.

Tonight they look a lot better…doesn’t mean they will win , but they don’t quit…they often don’t hit, but they don’t quit.

and agreed, got to get some bat somewheres. Honestly, the 2 guys are not horrible, but not the answer long term….

He’s making a case for a promotion to AAA. I’ve mentioned him before, but he’s a guy to keep an eye on. Excellent bat-to-ball skills. Classic contact hitter. Primarily plays SS, but can play all over the field. He’s also a plus baserunner with plus speed. He’ll likely never be a breakout star, but he’s the kind of guy that winning teams have on their roster.

Why is the RH hitting IF/OF not on the Atlanta roster already? The bench is still running short with just 4 reserves. When will the suits cut back on the over-bloated bullpen and give Snit a properly balanced roster? I understand the bullpen is underperforming, but adding quantity ≠ adding quality.

When Green gave up three runs in the ninth, I turn the game off. When I did not get an alert the game was over, I turned it back on in time to see Austin’s slide and then Fried’s walk off.

WillieC was called up out of necessity when Travid d’rnaud went down… not because he was “ready”. The kid needs to resume his development at AAA, and this will allow that to happen. Not sure Lucroy has alot left in the tank, but at least he has a track record. It’s a good thing that Td’A is expected back in August. The biggest beneficiary to this news is uber-prospect Shea Langeliers. The Cal grad made some tweaks to his hitting mechanics for this season and as a result is slashing .253/.348/.532 w/ 13 HR at AA Mississippi. Langeliers has possessed ML receiving skills since being drafted, but is still developing to allow his bat to catch up. He’s the future starter here, but is still likely 2 years away at best. Hopefully WC can finish his development and become a part of a pretty solid tandem with Shea. Or… at the very least hold strong trade value.

I am getting to that point with Dansby… So frustrating watching him to continue to flail away haplessly game after game.

I won’t argue with the disappointment felt from Dansby’s recent slump, but I will say this much… would we be as disappointed in his bat if he were batting 8th, which is where he should be in the order? I believe that losing players like Silver Slugger Travis d’Arnaud and reigning NL HR leader Marcell Ozuna has a greater effect on a team than just the 2 bats themselves. The sum is truly greater than the parts. When you have Abraham Almonte batting cleanup, you’ve got issues. Don’t forget also that we have a pitcher in the order this year as well. We all got used to the offensive juggernaut last season, but losing 3 of the 9 parts, as well as enduring a disappointing debut of a rookie CF, then it just magnifies the woes of those left behind. Is Dansby that much worse than he as in 2020? Or is he just the same guy with more responsibility?

That said, you have to love that Orlando Arcia is in the house. His presence creates the proverbial “leash” for Dansby… with the only real question being how long said leash is. should AA land a LF such as David Peralta or Mitch Haniger, then Arcia can slide right into SS and you don’t lose much.

I will submit though that Dansby has a ton of intangibles you don’t find in every player. He just knows how to play the game and does alot of little things that are important. But I agree that his bat has to play up at some point or he becomes a liability.

Body blows take a toll on a boxer over the course of a fight. I see the following as body blows the team has taken over the course of the 2021 fight… so far

+Young ace Mike Soroka, lost for the season with a 2nd tear of the Achilles tendon. Who knows if/when he can recover from that?
+Big offseason FA signee Marcell Ozuna arrested and charged with a felony. Even if he were to beat the rap, how can he come back to the team? (Hint: He can’t.)
+Starting catcher Travis d’Arnaud suffered a major injury early in the year, a year that the team failed to sign a veteran backup. Been scrambling with an assortment of mediocrity ever since.
+Hopeful rookie CF Cristian Pache could not find footing on the ML level, leaving the team to flail for a veteran replacement. Guillermo Heredia has been a nice surprise, but he’s barely replacement level.
+Mr. Brave and reigning MVP Freddie Freeman still not extended with half the season already expired.
+Complete collapse of the bullpen from Day 1. There is zero confidence when that outfield door opens and a new pitcher enters the field of play. (Except for Jesse Chavez. I love Jesse Chavez. 🙂 )

This team has taken a pounding through the first half of the season. Do they have any fight left in them?

Channel surfing a bit last night and saw the Nats leading the Padres 6-0. Watched Trey Turner make it 8-0 and then saw Max Schurzer have a complete melt down. Didn’t see that coming… Nats lose 9-8…. Also the Phillies win Mets lose… NL East is woeful this year.

Gil, you didn’t foresee a long reliever, just called up from the minors, hitting a Grand slam off of Mad Max? 😉

Neither did Mad Max… Of course he was not exactly fooling the Pads during the 4th inning either but his pitches were moving, not like it was a fastball over the middle of the plate, it was down and away. I guess that is why they tell pitchers to swing hard.

What year was it when the Braves lost their three starting pitchers? 2011? This year is kind of like that.

Meanwhile, the Braves lose All-Universe Ronald Acuña, Jr. for the season and their answer is to call up Johan Camargo..?

Ehire Adrianza has had a few nice AB’s over the course of the season coming off the bench, but let’s look at the reality of the situation. As a starter he’s slashing a very underwhelming .238/.319/.350. Look a that SLG percentage. That’s our starting RF. Heck, I’d just as soon they stick Abraham Almonte out there… at least he might provide the threat of a little power if nothing else. Oh, and Ehire is leading off too? Seriously, what is this braintrust looking to do here?

I’m hoping that move was just a quick Band-Aid move to get to the ASB and reassess.

In the immortal words of ex-Brave David Ross, there is a reason a player has a bench role on a team. They can provide an occasional spark or play well for a few days but at some point everyone realizes why they are not front line players.

That is now the case for 2/3 rds of the Braves starting line up. Just as a contending team does not play two rookies in the starting line up, having a team made up of AAAA players will not succeed for long. Not only does your everyday line up become suspect but you bench is seriously weakened also. But I digress, I am preaching to the choir here.

The only question at this point is whether the Braves become buyers or sellers and to be realistic, it is looking more and more like the arrow is tilting towards the selling side of the equation.

The bullpen is a shambles, the closer is suspect, there is no longer any bench to speak of and the starting staff is being held together with duct tape, chewing gum and bailing wire.

I guess the only real question is if the Braves hang on to Freddie Freeman to the end of the season or start the bidding early…. Not what I want but let’s be realistic, who else do they have to offer? Ozzie?

And if I read it correctly, Ian Anderson is being evaluated for a possible shoulder ailment and could also see time on the IL.

Is it time to just punt on 2021 and look ahead to 2022 and beyond? Maybe we should go ahead and trade Drew Smyly now that he’s on a season high. Maybe Charlie Morton too. Those guys would certainly net a decent return. Will Smith too. And if you can get anything for Shane Greene, let’s let him go too.

Maybe in the mean time they can figure out a way to pay Freddie and give the team some assurance that their MVP isn’t going west. The thought of him in Angle red is nauseating. The Braves need a positive shot in the arm before resuming the season. Taking care of Freddie would be a great step in that direction.

Back to the topic of Ronnie’s ACL…

Anyone who thinks he’ll miss only the remainder of the season is gravely mistaken. At best, he might return in May 2022. Mid-season is most likely. Alex better find a more suitable RF replacement than Ehire Adrianza.

There is a rumor afoot that the Braves are about to acquire recently DFA’d Adam Eaton from the ChiSox for low prospect Tyler Neslony. Eaton would be more of a depth move than a real OF answer, but at least it’s something more than just recalling Johan Camargo.

While I really like Austin Riley at the hot corner, he is the best player the Braves have had to play 3rd since Chipper retired, he can play either corner outfield position and a decent first base. I would hate to think the Braves suffered thru Austin’s growing pains without reaping the benefits.

At what point do we begin to realize the Braves success was due more to the Brave’s previous regimes that to AA’s prowess as a GM? If you look around, you will notice he has replaced many long time Braves’ support staff with former Toronto associates.

I have seen it happen in many college coaching changes where the new hire does well with a former coaches recruitment class.

I worries when the Braves began to cut scouting staff if favor of computer evaluations. One thing I have notice is that computers are very bad at identifying intangibles. I would also be remiss if I did not cite the old bromide, Garbage In, Garbage Out… Just saying…

Well, there will be no Adam Eaton trade as rumored. He has been released by the White Sox. I suppose the Braves could make a bid. I’d prefer the make an actual impactful move.

I’m going to just set something down here and see how it morphs…

I heard a wild (very wild) rumor today that the Braves might consider including Dansby in a trade package. The reasoning is 1) he’s got this season plus his final arb season remaining under team control, 2) he’s making $6M before hitting that last big arb bump, and 3) the Braves see Orlando Arcia as possibly being better while also being cheaper.

Arcia’s natural position is SS. He’s only been at AAA because there wasn’t a clear path to ATL until he moved to LF. It’s certainly a plausible scenario, particularly if they need to include a quality vet to obtain a quality OF.

Today the Braves outrighted reliever Jay Flaa to AAA after successfully passing him through waivers. This is intriguing because it now adds an additional opening on the 40-man roster, which currently sits at 38 after RAJr was placed on the 60 day IL.

I’m done with Jeff Passan, dutiful soldier of the social army familiarly known as ESPN, after he delivered a scathing on-air rebuke to Stephen A. Smith on the topic of racial insensitivity. Yes, that Stephen A. Smith. And sadly, but not surprisingly, his carefully crafted soapbox soliloquy didn’t really connect to what Stephen A originally said. But it sure did make for a good politically correct marquee moment for ESPNCCCP.

Hey, Jeff…. you can kiss my @$$ in any language you choose. You used to be a pretty good baseball writer. Now you’re just another political pawn for the Worldwide Leader in social commentary. Your credibility just swam the southward spiral to the septic tank.

    Bye.

I’ve noticed no one has talked up any of the draft pics…I of course hope they turn out, but they seemed (at least with the first and later picks) to be going for risky, but possibly high ceiling guys….and of course…pitchers….I know, you can’t have too many, but…we have 2 kids that aren’t ready, and have no options, while other teams, say the Dodgers, forever have great outfielders just waiting to come up…
reading Keith Law today, It appears the SS/Pitcher that he thought the braves would get in the 1st round, (got in the 2nd round) even though he was a closer, will be a starter instead?
3rd or 4th round guy looks to be a utility player? weee. :/
maybe someone has someone else that really is excited about these picks?

I think I am just exhausted waiting on draft picks to blossom. They either do or don’t but unlike other sports, baseball players are seldom ready to make an impact right away. Anyone else remember the really high expectations for Wright? He may yet develop into a front line starter but he is still a couple of years away at a minimum in my opinion.

Baseball has really changed over the years, use to be a player went thru a lot more development before showing up in a major league uniform. They would be a lot closer to 26 than to 21 before their debut.

I have been mulling over a new lead in my head. Hopefully by the weekend.

I wonder if the team would be so inconsistent if his leadership was still present. It’s not a knock on Freddie, but Markakis didn’t mess around. And everyone respected that about him.
