17:NY Carpetbaggers Challenge Salty’s Bama Barnstormers

ATHENS, GA – The days of barnstorming during the offseason were thought to be long over. Then some enterprising Dixie whistler named Salty secured funding to start up his own barnstorming team from his bootlegging buddy Klobber. And, yes, Klobber, we know you are a bootlegger. We know this much discussed red velvet cake is mere code for one of your bootlegged products. Although I guess this would make sweet Flbravesgirl a bootlegger as well.

But, anyways, as Salty has previously announced in this here place, Salty has formed his own barnstorming squad of Bama greats.

Salty’s squad boasts an infield of Willie McCovey, Ted Sizemore, Ozzie Smith, and Joe Sewell; an outfield of Billy Williams, Willie Mays, and Hank Aaron; Charlie Moore playing catcher; and a bench of Riggs Stephenson, Jim Davenport, Rudy York, Carlos May, Monte Irvin, Heine Manush, and Luke Sewell. His pitching rotation has Don Sutton, Early Wynn, Satchel Paige, Jimmy Key, Doyle Alexander, Bob Veale, Virgil Trucks, Rip Sewell, Jeff Brantley, and Clay Carroll. His manager is Gabby Street.

This barnstorming team from Sweet Home Alabama is taking the world by storm, going town to town, taking on all friends and foes, winning every game, while Salty pockets boatloads of money.

Of course, being the bootlegging, rum running shyster gangster that he is, Klobber collects kickbacks from the earnings of Salty’s team of Bama barnstormers.

Klobber is also using these games as a way to franchise his saloons. Klobber’s Knob Creek Saloons have been opening all over the country wherever Salty’s Bama Barnstormers leave the townfolk in their wake. The players are reportedly only being paid with the privilege of indulging in Knob Creek.

Many across the nation breathlessly await news of the daily exploits of this group of Bama Barnstormers. Some beet writer has been Johnny-on-the-spot and has capitalized on the success of the team and the demand for news about the team. This beet writer is being called a modern day Grantland Rice. Whether that is true remains to be seen.

But, recently, the beet writer has announced he is bored with the team. The beet writer has made a nationwide call to arms to come challenge Salty’s Bama Barnstormers. The beet writer is demanding a tournament be played. Many are reportedly too scared to take on Salty’s squad.

I decided to take the beet writer’s challenge to come conquer the unbeaten Bama Barnstormers. I secured some funding from the bootleggin’ Klobber myself, purchased a Juggs gun, binoculars, a stop watch, and a whistle. I was determined to go do some bird dogging.

Not knowing where to find players, I looked around locally here in Athens, Georgia. I only found 5 players who had played in the majors who could claim to have been born here in Athens, and only 2 of them are worth anything as ballplayers: Brian McCann and Jake Westbrook. That just wasn’t gonna work. So, I decided to head back to the place of my birth and raising: the Boogie Down Bronx.

So, I took the Amtrak up to Penn Station, did some sightseeing in Manhattan, and then headed over to Grand Central to catch the 4 train up to the Bronx. When the 4 emerged from the dark tunnel where the subway becomes an el, I knew I was back home in the Bronx because I could immediately see the splendid Yankee Stadium straight ahead.

I went all over the Bronx, from Fordham Road to Soundview to Morris Park to Gun Hill Road to Van Cortland Park to Webster Avenue to Broadway to the Grand Concourse to White Plains Road.

I was saddened to learn that Macombs Dam Park was no longer there. They were now building the New Yankee Stadium on top of the sandlot park where Rod Carew had learned to play baseball as a kid.

Searching here and there, near and far, I was bitterly disappointed there were not many more players who could claim they were technically born in the Boogie Down than could claim they were from Athens, Georgia. But up in the Boogie Down, I managed to find Ronnie Belliard, Bobby Bonilla, Frankie Frisch, and B.J. Surhoff.

Belliard is a nice little player and all but I can’t expect him to be able to touch the likes of Satchel Paige. Surhoff may have technically been born in the Bronx but, as we all know, he is more well known as the catcher from Rye, New York, not the Bronx. And, from his time with the Atlanta Braves, I believe B.J. to be a lil’ sourpuss. I didn’t want to bring B.J. along for the ride but he was a catcher and catchers are hard to find. So, I invited Bobby Bo, Frisch, and B.J. to open tryouts. Had to keep Bobby Bo.He was the guy, after all, who once taunted beat writers that he was gonna show the beat writers the Bronx. Love the spirit even if I don’t like the guy.

I decided to broaden my search to all the boroughs of New York. I next took the ferry over to Shaolin, a.k.a. Staten Island. Unfortunately, there was no one out there. So, I headed over to Queens. Same thing there. No one worth anything. Brokenhearted at this point but not broken in will, I made my way over to Crooklyn.

Over in Crooklyn, the first player I found was Ken Brett. I asked where his brother George was. Ken responded that unfortunately George wasn’t born in Brooklyn like Ken was. What good are you without George I thought to myself. Angry about it, I decided not to invite Ken to an open tryout.

I then found some interesting prospects such as Rich Aurilla, Shawon Dunston, David Dejesus, Sid Gordon, Joe Judge, Paul Loduca, Joe Pepitone, Rico Petrocelli, Eddie Yost, Richie Zisk and invited them to open tryouts. Nice little players but I can’t exactly take on Salty’s Bama Barnstormers with these little fellas.

Just as I was about to give up hope, I happened upon a sandlot where Lou Whitaker, Joe Torre, Sandy Koufax, Phil Rizzuto, and Wee Willie Keeler were playing. I didn’t invite them to an open tryout. I told them they were on the team, told Torre he was the player/manager, and told Sandy he was the staff ace.

After looking through 4 of the 5 boroughs though, my squad wasn’t looking too good. My search through Manhattan was gonna have to be very fruitful.

Puzzled about the lack of ballplayers born in the outer boroughs, I decided to check baseball-reference.com for how many prospects had been born in Manhattan. I didn’t want to just go wandering aimlessly from Battery Park to Inwood to the Upper East Side to Harlem to Hell’s Kitchen to Greenwich Village if there were no ballplayers there.

Much to my surprise, I found that most of the ballplayers from New York City had been born in Manhattan. Guess that is not so surprising since the best hospitals are in Manhattan. But I don’t think that is what the problem is. Pregnant mothers about to deliver babies are not exactly gonna hop on the subway down to Manhattan after their water breaks. And they are not likely to hail an expensive cab at that moment either.

Most likely what was causing the problem was laziness on the part of those listing the player’s place of birth on their birth certificates. When you list New York, New York as the birthplace, this is supposed to mean the child was born on the island of Manhattan. If you are born in one of the outer boroughs, it should be listed as Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, or The Bronx. But whatever. I finally found the prospects I needed to take on Salty’s vaunted barnstorming squad from south of the Mason-Dixon.

When the team finally took shape, this is what the barnstorming Carpetbaggers from New York City looked like: Joe Torre, Lou Gehrig, Hank Greenberg, Lou Whitaker, Frankie Frisch, Alex Rodriguez, Phil Rizzuto, Edgar Martinez, Rocky Colavito, Ken Singleton, Wee Willie Keeler, Bobby Bonilla, B.J. Surhoff, Rico Petrocelli, Sandy Koufax, Jim Palmer, Ed Lopat, Whitey Ford, John Candeleria, Matt Morris, Dennis Leonard, Waite Hoyt, Larry Corcoran, John Franco.

My bird dogging complete, I turned the fellas over to our manager Joe Torre. This is the lineup card Grandpa Joe came up with:

All in all, I think it is a team worthy of engaging in a war of northern aggression against Salty’s Bama Barnstormers. We’ll see. Torre might not be Sherman but Torre did a pretty good job of burning down Atlanta by winning 8 straight in the World Series against the Braves in the 1990s.

Let’s go old school and play a best of 9 series like they did back in the day. No night games under the lights. Only day games with a true doubleheader or two during the series. None of this day/night doubleheader garbage. We’ll have a hard time convincing Klobber of that though. Klobber wants to maximize profits. Lost profits due to true doubleheaders are certainly not in the plans of that crooked bootlegger.

Any other challengers out there? Do you dare take on the Bama Barnstormers or the New York Carpetbaggers?

And reprinted by request of CL….

Good evening everyone, many well reasoned posts have been made…. Well, most anyway. I had a wonderful lunch with my oldest daughter today, such a charming young lady whom I see far less than I might wish.. 😦 She too was very disappointed by the Braves announcement of moving to Gwinnett. See, I’m not the only one. Good baseball knowledge that one has… 🙂

An interesting read to show how some things never change….

One last thing before turning on the boob tube… Dave Bundage is going to make a great major league manager someday. He has all the tools necessary in my opinion. I have seen some good ones pass through Richmond over the years. Luman Harris, Charlie Manual, Carlos Tosca, Freddie Gonzalas, Grady Little. That is just a few….

I am going to pull a number out of my hat but I think a manager is responsible for about 10 wins per year. He can be responsible for many more loses than that but ten wins in a season can be a huge swing. Nope, no research to back that up, just a feeling from watching and playing the game for more than 50 years.

One last comment on Bobby Cox and from this point I will simply say “You Know”… I honestly believe his best attribute is as a talent evaluator. Something I think he will be allowed to do when he steps down form managing. I agree he has lost a bit with the change in the brain trust in the dugout. It is the nature of the game. There is a lot more to managing a major league baseball team than filling out a line up card and yelling “hey kid”. I am not privy to all that goes on in the Braves club house but somebody has to disseminate all the information gathered on other teams and be aware of all the subtle nuances of the game.

Bobby Cox strikes me as a checkers kind of guy verses a chess player like LaRussa. Not to take anything away from being a good checker player, I never beat my dad one single game of checkers in the thirty years we shared this earth together but he never would learn to play chess as my brother and I had done.

Baseball does not have to be complicated but it can be when things don’t do right. For all you none blue collar types out there who never could see the value of a guy sitting on his butt getting paid a good wage while watching dials and gauges. He wasn’t getting paid for when things went right, he was paid for knowing what to do when things went wrong and kept half the city from being blown up along the way.

I’ll bet CL could cite numerous times when a simple attention to detail could have prevented a catastrophe.

Oh, my…outstanding! But, beat the Barnstormers…nah, can’t touch this!!!

And what’s this DH nonsense…ol’ Greenburg ain’t gonna stand for that tomfoolery. Don’t embarass a HOFer with this ersatz baseball stuff. Show the man the dignity he’s due.!

Also, on the matter of details, just remember, ol’ Hank and Sandy are no shows for them Saturday games…they’re Jewish, you know! Remember, details, fundamentals, execute…WIN!

Don’t worry about Klobber’s KC sales during the DH’s. He’s already mapped out the best bbq to procure, and is in cahoots with FBG on the dessert menu. SG…he’s the logistics guy…with a marketing bent! Oh, my, this is gonna be so good!

Dammit Braveheart…you’re gonna make me look up all that stuff?

Doesn’t your team have to pay some sort of geographic salary tax because you had to ride so many trains all over the boroughs and south of the MD line to gather ’em all up? That would only be fair. Square miles, man. That equals dollars. Don’t be pullin’ a Steinbrenner on the Bama boys.

Since I’m southern boy, I have to throw in with Salty’s Bama Barnstormers. Howza’bout we throw in some guys that came through Savannah and Atlanta on barnstorming tours instead of a luxury tax on your team? That would be fair. Evens the odds a bit, eh?

Oh, also the Klobber Saloon franchise, Lowcountry Dessert Consortium and the FBG Enterprises must also have a lock on all in-game concessions. Deal?

Very entertaining post WW. Nicely done.

williamwallace, very nice lead post. I have to tell you that I do appreciate reading your thoughts because you are willing to do the research that I am often too busy, lazy, or just plain stupid to do myself.

And, yes, Klobber, we know you are a bootlegger.

You say this as though it is a bad thing!

Actually, I’ve gone back and re-read the parts that pertain to me…..

Lost profits due to true doubleheaders are certainly not in the plans of that crooked bootlegger.

Maybe it’s true that I’m a rum runner, shyster, ganger, and crooked bootlegger. However I take exception to to you saying that I’m cheap. I pay my boys well — all the Knob Creek, cigars and cheese they want. I even share my Red Velvet Cakes when I can get it. So cheap, I am not. You sir, have quite obviously been overserved and are hereby cut-off. And you don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here. You’re out!

And by the way, Salty’s Southern Gentlemen are gonna kick the ever lovin’ crud outta that rag tag bunch of carpet baggin’ punks you call a baseball team. Once this deal with fbg goes thru, we’ll have so much money to put back into this team youze guyz won’t stand a chance!

SECURITY! Please show Mr. Wallace where the door is!

    🙂

The one I got earlier turned out to be a refill that we had forgotten to pick up a couple of months back and they had not yet processed the new one when I had been there earlier.

    Bob,
If you are still around…you asked what speed my DSL was. I think a few years back there was a site that checked that for you? It was fast..then. Do you know a site that checks that sort of stuff now???
I was thinking of switching, since earthlink, which we had since 1998, charges us $51 and some change a month for our DSL and we have a problem with getting disconnected when we pick up the phone next to the computer!(Didn’t use to happen) And as Clark Howard would say, they have customer no service. You call, you get someone in India that apologizes all over the place for you having a problem, then suggest you do all sorts of crazy things. Like one time I couldn’t get the computer to connect all day, and they suggested I disconnect everything to make sure the phone lines were working. I told her I was talking to them on the via the phone lines right now, but they have a script to stick to! And I told them I would lose them, and I had been on hold for an hour already. Gotta do what they say. She said she would call back, but she didn’t. Next person I get, they want me to disconnect phone line as well. I tell them, if they don’t call back, I will cancel their service. I say in such a way that might have them think I would fly to India and find them. They call back. Still couldn’t connect. Then they want you to look for something of there’s outside…something I have never noticed before. and I am calling at 3 am. I wouldn’t do that. Then, they sent me to the next rung up the food chain of help. Get a guy in the U.S. that speaks English(Like I used to when I first signed up with Mindspring, before Earthlink gobbled them up) He hears I can’t connect, says for me to disable my Firewall. I tell him I have had the same firewall for 2 years. Yeah…disable your firewall. I do, and voila, I am back online! And I only wasted 3 hours talking to folks in Delhi.
Wow. Such anger! I guess I need to switch companies! Sorry for the rant, and getting off the subject of…ummm, oh yeah, DSL services!!! These are ATT’s 4 tiers of DSL service.

    $19.95
    per month
    no term commitment

    Up to 13X faster than
    standard dial-up $32.95

    Up to 25X faster than
    standard dial-up $37.95
    per month
    no term commitment

    standard dial-up $42.95
    per month
    no term commitment

    Up to 100X faster than
    standard dial-up

Here are the Earthlink tiers(I have no idea which is mine since I pay much more!)

    EarthLink High Speed DSL
Downstream speed of up to 3.0Mbps
Special Offer: $19.95/month for the first 3 months
    Monthly Charge: $44.95/month thereafter
Up to 2 times faster than regular DSL! (regular DSL = 1.5 Mbps)

    EarthLink High Speed DSL
Downstream speed of up to 1.5Mbps
Special Offer: $12.95/month for the first 3 months
    Monthly Charge: $39.95/month thereafter

Any thoughts as to which top tier is faster since they don’t use the same parameters?? Thanks for any suggestions!

I noticed him in a Joan Blondell movie(I try to catch every early Blondell film since I am madly in love with her) and was wondering what he was doing with equal billing. Well, Warner Brothers was giving him the big build-up, but he had a secret. He was gay. He was also married. His first marriage did not work out well, to say the least, as she killed herself. About a year after his death(And already remarried) he shot and killed himself!!! He was only 29.

    Braves -vs- Mets

“Okay, Bobby. What team are you a fan of?”
    “The Braves.”
    “Why’s that?”
“Well, my parents are both Braves fans, so I’m a Braves fan too.”
“That’s not a good answer, Bobby. If your parents were both morons, would you be a moron too?”

Good morning all, Sitting here catching up on the overnights and trying to figure out what I did to aggravate my back yesterday… It always takes at least an hour for everything to kick in so I can feel human. I was dreaming I was having my leg operated on with out anesthetics and woke up. Still had the dang pain. No wonder people get depressed…..

Anyway, …. Berigan, I switched over to cable as DSL is not available to me. Neither was cable until last year. My dial up speed was typically around 14,000 bps with an occasional boost up to 23,000. Trust me….. that is slooooooow.

Needless to say, I did not blog much. I switched this week from the $9.95 per month to free AOL account. I had already dropped the $24.95 plan as I have Comcast. I just hardly ever use either as I only pick up my mail from AOL and just connect directly to the internet when I log on. It is amazing how much AOL can slow you down.

True story… When I bought my first computer, it was a Gateway with a Pentium 166 cpu. I in inadvertently erased a .DLL file and had trouble when rebooting using windows 95. I call tech support and spent 13 hours on the phone with them trying to fix the problem. When we finished, I had to send it back to Gateway. They returned it to me about two weeks later. The only thing they did not replace was the cabinet and the floppy drive.

I have become much more computer savvy and when I have a real problem now, I get the wife to fix it as she is much more patient than I. Now I can do some amazing things with Microsoft office thanks to the two semesters of classes I attended at a local community college but even then I have since learned I can do the same things with Corel at a 10th the price and it is more backwards compatible.

It is all about getting past the fear. 🙂

If you could host a dinner party for 10, including yourself … and invite any nine people, living or dead … who would you include?

For me, that would be tough … my first thought was Jack the Ripper, just to find out who he was … but then, what would I do if he turned out to be kin?

    Let’s see …

    1. Jesus of Nazareth
    2. William Shakespeare
    3. Benjamin Franklin
    4. George Patton
    5. Aesop
    6. Socrates
    7. Plato
    8. Adolf Hitler

    Sports
    1. George Patton
    2. Mary, Queen of Scoots
    3. Jim Thorpe
    4. Sammy Byrd
    5. Knute Rockne
    6. Bobby Jones
    7. Harry Vardon
    8. Connie Mack
    9. Ernie Harwell

    Baseball

    1. Kenesaw Mountain Landis
    2. Ernie Harwell
    3. Ty Cobb
    4. Babe Ruth
    5. Senator Mitchell
    6. Connie Mack
    7. Satchel Paige
    8. Walter Johnson
    9. Christy Mathewson

“The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime.” – Babe Ruth

    Beet Righters

When Chopper was designated our official beat righter, I contacted Jimmy Smith and suggested we have a special surprise dinner party to celebrate the occasion … Chopper, Jimmy, me, and seven intelligent beet righters as guests. I made all the arrangements … ordered beer, pretzels, cheese and fish sandwiches … everything was perfect! Even volunteered to invite the guests if Jimmy would provide me a list of email addresses.

I’m still waiting and the beer is gettin’ stale …

Bob, you’d have to seat Aesop at the head so it would be Aesop’s table. (rim shot)

Yes, it’s that kind of morning.

Berigan, my Comcast cable is either 6 or 8 Mbps when it works, if that helps anything. I seem to remember the dude telling me that when he installed it. It’s like $47 per month. It works real fast, then gradually slows to a crawl, then I unplug the modem and plug it back in and it goes fast again. That’s easier than talking to an Indian.

    Off to the gym.

Berigan … I need to get some sleep but … methinks you can get a better deal!!! Others can advise you better than ich but I’ll look at it when I get up … a general rule, try to stay from those who provide unnecessary stuff … what’s unnecessary is up to you, but it’s overhead … even were it to be free … and it slows you down, especially if you periodically shut down and reboot … AOL is a good example.

Like anything else, shop around … I use Comcast … hate the company, but the speed is okay … and I’m too lazy to change … if I ever start hosting again, I’ll switch to the high speed DSL with a static IP, … with what was Bell South, if I can get it.

I don’t call them gay … but, whatever it is that he was, it appears that he was a talented but sad and troubled individual.

Grinch, sounds like your modem may be on the way out. You should be able to take it to a Comcast office and exchange it for a new one. I’ve had Comcast internet for about seven years and have had to ask for a new modem a couple of times.

When you arrive at the site just click on your nearest city (you’ll be Atlanta). Then just read it and weep (assuming your on slow DSL. For a comparative, here were my numbers when just checked:

Download Speed: 5987 kbps (748.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

Most of the bad bosses I had were promoted. The good ones were moved around so we always had somebody who had no clue as to how to run the business. After a while you realize that in a rat race it is always a rat that wins….

I never had a problem with doing any task assigned but soon learned that the more you do, the more you will be given to do. Lazy people are avoided like the plague and never assigned extra work. It makes no difference the level you aspirer to in life, that is a fact. If you want something done, give it to the busiest person you can find, if you want it done right, do it yourself.

People are like mules, they will work fine as long as they don’t think they are being overloaded. Very unlike horses who will work themselves to death. It only pays to be the superstar if you are in business for yourself. Otherwise folks will ride you until you drop. Bad mules however, end up as glue….

And last but certainly not least, people will always find something to complain about. If they are not, then something is wrong and a coup is about to happen….. The secret is to make sure the complaints are not about serious stuff. I have never known folks to complain about a headlight being out when the engine won’t start…..

And Bob… Adolf Hitler????? A particular question you would like to ask him?

I wonder if the stupid Mets even got the right Santana in the deal? Knowing their propensity for signing older players late in their careers, one must wonder-though Carlos is hardly the Mo Vaughan of guitarists.

    1. Jesus (who always is at our table, and by our sides)

    3-4. My double-play combination
    5. Franklin D. Roosevelt
    6. George Washington
    7. Ted Williams
    8. Ronald Reagan
    9. My grandfather (just to catch up with my best friend; nine years and a lot of ground to cover since he passed on).

As far as an all-sports list (I’ll leave the family off this one):

    1. Jesus
    2. Teddy Ballgame
    3. Dale Murphy
    4. Mark Richt
    5. Babe Ruth
    6. Michael Jordan
    7. Tiger Woods
    8. Warren Spahn
    9. Hank Aaron

The cool thing is I’ve spoken with Nos. 3, 4, 7 and 9 on this list, but it’d be cool to break bread and talk about their successes, their leadership skills and lessons learned. Think I could learn a lot from them. If I could squeeze a couple more seats around the table, I’d bring in Greg Maddux, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine, just to watch the three of them fight over the last biscuit!

NYM have no leverage whatsoever from a negotiation standpoint. They have painted themselves into a very expensive corner.

I will state again, for the record, that contract will cause problems for Johan, the clubhouse and the organization. Don’t think so? Ask A-Rod his opinion. Ask Kevin Brown how big contract + big expectations + big city lights feels. Ask Superman Wright, who plays every day, how his 6 year/$55M deal feels now.

Sorry about not responding last night. Had a wicked headache. The type that requires 12 Advils and 15 hours of sleep.

I’m glad people took the post in good fun. Glad to see Bob came up with a Georgia team for the tourney. We have 3 teams now. Tennessee, Florida, South Carolina, Arkansas will want to be represented I’m betting. Since Vermont is probably short in players, Lew can have the entire New England area.

Salty, I had not thought about Sandy and Greenberg not wanting to play on Saturdays. I’m betting that you and Klobber rig the tourney so that the Carpetbaggers have to play doubleheaders on Saturday. The 9 game series will start with a doubeleheader on a Saturday and end the following Saturday with another doubleheader.

As for DH, how can I sit the Iron Horse? I don’t think either Joe Torre or I want to be the ones who end Lou’s streak at 2130 because we Wally Pipped Lou Gehrig in favor of starting Hank Greenberg at first base. I guess Greenberg will just have to settle for being a pinch hitter since the ones running this tournament are of the National League variety.

Third base concerns me. Edgar Martinez was only a third baseman early in his career and was not a very good one. I guess I could move Torre over to third and start B.J. at catcher. But that would take Greenberg and Edgar’s bat out of the lineup.

Oh, well, my head is still killing me, so I’ll respond to the rest later.

Well, I have Dish network. After 20 years of lousy reception with cable(Or digital cable on channels above 100 , and Turner Classic movies always being below 100) and their constant ads bashing Satellite, went with Dish, and have never regretted it. Wouldn’t be able to get a deal for Comcast in other words.

Ah, the brick wall comment again. Methinks if you looked in a mirror these days, you would see two colors. Red, with thin strips of gray vertically and horizontally! I like to think I am more of a plaster wall, with some give. Plaster. Man, am I dating myself. I am a fun date though.
By the by, the baseball world seems to agree with me that the Mets are improved.
Buster Olney says it can be argued the mets are the best team in the NL(Though he also mentioned his ERA was 5.11 the last 7 starts after a 17 strike out game-and wonders if the Twins where thinking they had to trade him)
Keith Law says it makes the Mets the NL favorite as well. Wait, perhaps I should rethink the whole thing if he says that! 😉

Seriously though, a open minded, easy goin’ fellow like yourself has to at least admit the Mets about stole Santana from the Twins, right????

Lots of good folks there and then I don’t have to worry about invitations, cooking or cleanup. Mr. Fly wants to come to and bring all of his mutant relatives. I told him to save that for a larger outdoor affair in the summer.

No test results yet. Was up all night, had her at the hospital by 7:15 this morning, got home around lunchtime, had a hour’s nap, then back up to take Kelly to her appt., home again, warm supper, got everybody fed – and here I am. That’s an impressive list for Georgia. Too funny having Rondell White on the DL already. I’m betting that you will need to put Moises Alou on the DL at some point during the tournament.

I would love to see the chemistry of that lockerroom with Jackie Robinson playing on the same team with Ty Cobb and John Rocker. I have been scolded by sweet flbravesgirl. You know you have crossed a line somewhere if Sweetness is gonna take you to task. But she is right. I replaced the peace symbol with Clint Eastwood. You probably couldn’t see it but the peace symbol had the colors of the Irish flag in it. What do we Irish know of peace? But killing Osama and Hitler does not make one not a peaceful man. It’s the opposite. You increase the peace by ending their treacherous lives. Now, If I was attacking Switzerland or the blog equivalent in you and Carolina Lady, that would be not so peaceful.

Yeah, Savannah, that will be a spirited bunch. That ain’t bad. Bobby Cox wouldn’t like it but he ain’t the manager. I remember JJS talking towards the end of the season about his concerns that the Braves were so young and didn’t act young – no rally caps, none of that spirited stuff. I fully agree with him about that. I’m so tired of these yong guys rushing to the altar and acting like a bunch of corporate white collar stiffs. The Braves badly need a few blue collars.

Oh, yeah, Savannah, that’s cool. You can definitely add players with ties to Savannah. I didn’t feel right having Arod and B.J. Surhoff on the team since B.J. is from Rye and Arod is really from Miami. I probably should take Arod off and put Rod Carew on since Arod was born there and grew up elsewhere and Carew was born elsewhere but grew up in the Bronx. It would be like doing a basketball team and claiming Michael Jordan because he was born in Brooklyn although we all know he grew up in North Carolina.

Okay folks, I have been surfing the web trying to get an idea of which teams have improved themselves over the winter. Wow, I can hardly wait for the first pitch. This year is going to be a real barn burner in the NL East. That said, most every team has improved themselves except maybe for the Marlins but with them you never know, depends on their pitching.

This is the type of season I really look forward to when every team looks to bring something to the table and upsets are the norm. I think the difference this year is going to be the middle relievers. I don’t think any team is going to start out loosing 9 out of 10 like last year. A saying I once was fond of when I was into competition, “If you’re going to be the best, you have to beat the best.”

Will the Mets adopt “Black Magic Woman” as the official theme song when Santana pitches? Does anyone remember when the Braves signed Tim Hudson to the same amount of hoopla as Santana is now receiving? How did that work out for the Braves that year? Yes, Hudson did come around but it took two years.

It is still all about having depth and stamina. I think the Mets are going to be closer to the end of their run than the Nationals are to their beginning. The Braves and the Phillies will be the class of the East this year but baseball as a whole should be better. Maybe not the Orioles but everybody else.. :p

That’s a great team, Klobber. One of the great things about baseball is that no matter who you are or where you are from, they seem to find you. But I often think sometimes though that there are truly great players out there that never got to play for who knows what reason. Never got the shot, weren’t exposed or encouraged enough by a loving father, liked other sports, who knows.

Some concerns will be raised when they question how Klobber has his own team but is financing the tournament and the teams for me and Salty as well. Conflict of interest? We’ll just say he may be a crooked bootlegger but he demands the utmost integrity with what goes on between the white lines.

I see I have a lot of catching up to do … computer’s been down all evening and now email doesn’t work.

Adolf Hitler?????A particular question you would like to ask him?

Actually, quite a few … a very interesting individual and a most persuasive speaker … but, my reason for inviting him … Jesus across the table … goodness, a new definition to squirm, methinks. I suspect the answer to the purpose of life may lie somewhere in the book of the Apostle John … and probably should have invited him too … would love to know what he really thought, said and meant … rather than what is attributed to him … though it’s pretty good stuff itself.

As an aside, I didn’t include either family or members of the Blog … because of the invitee list limitation of nine … wouldn’t be fair and I’ve lost my 100 foot poll. I too had Catherine the Great but I didn’t want to offend Peter … and also had Samuel Clemens in my original list which didn’t include Socrates and Plato … they were last minute invitees because Carol knows them well and folks I respect have always said I should get to know them too … but never did.

To the one who watches us but doesn’t speak … it seems that my email account is somehow corrupt or Comcast has a problem … but, your solution is correct. Personally, I think the more delightful and elegant setup is to end it with the “kid” not knowing the answer … and then asking how many homers he had hit in Rookie League … but then he wouldn’t have made the team … and it would have been more difficult to set up the “Bobby/Hoss” sequel.

The “sequel” is actually based on a true story … I encountered the basic problem about 50 years ago … in the form of “the product of three whole numbers = X and the sum of the three = Z. What are the three numbers in terms of Z?” … There is no general unique solution since, as with 2450, there are numbers where certain of the possible values of “Z” produce multiple solution sets.

For those who might have an interest …

Some folks say there’s not enough information … two equations in three unknowns … but, they overlook the vital third piece of information … the “kid” couldn’t solve it … for if of the “3 number cross products” that equal 2450, no two had the same sum, … the intelligent “kid” would have known the answer but he did not … and since there is but one such duplicate, we know how many homers the “kid” hit … 32, if memory serves.

The “kid” figured it out when the manager told him that he had hit more in his career than any of the three … a vital fourth piece of information for there is only number which would allow him to so do … 50, the number of career homers hit by the manager.

Sounds oblique, but it’s really not … just my poor ability to explain a neat little math puzzle … too tough for beet righters maybe, but even Hoss “figured” it out.

The true story part … I made good pocket money with that little puzzle while in school, in the service, and later at parties … because folks would argue it couldn’t be solved.

When I would interview folks for positions, I never paid much attention to their resumes … I’ve read more of them than Scribe has written stories … and haven’t seen a bad one yet. Hiring folks is hard ’cause they always try to tell you what you want to hear when they’re looking for work … so I developed a little test that included some of my favorites; with this one included among the math related questions … helped me to know how they thought; that is, their thought processes … which methinks is the key to motivation and management … and interested me more than what they already knew or thought … you can generally change those things with relative ease … helps with chemistry too, when folks have similar approaches to giving thought … but the knowing is what’s key.

When we opened Regency Galleries (home furnishings, art and accessories), I included the test, sans the more difficult math problems, as part of the employee employment application … probably couldn’t get away with doing that today … but it wasn’t for any evil purpose, I assure you.

Those that I hired liked “the test” … one evening, after we had closed, I ordered pizza and we had a little impromptu employee meeting … during which I gave them each blank pieces of notepaper and sternly told them that we had added another problem to “the test” and would use it in their performance evaluation … I then told the story to them … no response, … except for a young teenager whom I had given a part time, after school job … helping to keep things clean, neat, etc. … who was just listening.

Without warning, he blurted out the answer! I was stunned and asked him how he came to that conclusion … and there it was … 2,000 … 400 … and 50 … and the logic too … poor kid. No, his name was John, not Larry.

A totally unconnected thought … equal pay for equal work … bah humbug … there is no such animal!

    Sleep tight!

Why is it that “sit tight” means to take no action while “sleep tight” means to sleep soundly or well? Tight is a tough word …

    joke(s) of the day

Charles Dickens walks into a bar and orders a martini. The bartender asks, “Olive or twist?”

A mushroom walks into a bar and the bartender says “We don’t serve your kind here.” and the mushroom says – “Why not? I’m a fungi!

A horse walks into a bar, across the room, up the back wall, across the ceiling, down the front wall and then up to the bar. The bartender gives the horse a beer, he drinks it and leaves. A guy sitting at the bar looks perplexed and asks the bartender “Hey, what’s that all about?” The bartender replies, “Don’t take it personally, he never says ‘Hi’ to anyone.”

A pony walks into a bar and coughs, “Hey, COUGH. Gimme a bu COUGH a beer COUGH. The bartender serves him and says, “What’s with your voice?” The pony says, “Nothing, I’m just a little hoarse.”

A guy walks into a bar with jumper cables. The bartender says, “You can come in, but don’t start anything!”

A man runs into a bar and asks the barkeep, “Give me ten shots of your best whisky.” The bartender sets up the ten glasses. The man starts drinking them as quickly as the bartender serves them. The bartender asks, “Why are you drinking so fast?” “You’d drink fast too, if you had what I have.” The bartender asks, “What do you have?” “Seventy cents.”

A dog with his leg wrapped in bandages hobbles into a saloon. He sidles up to the bar and announces: “I’m lookin’ fer the man that shot my paw.”

A guy walks into a bar, sits down and hears a small voice say, “You look nice today.” A few minutes later he again hears a small voice, “That’s a nice shirt.” The guy asks the bartender, “Who is that?” The bartender says, “Those are the peanuts. They’re complimentary!”

When you arrive at the site just click on your nearest city (you’ll be Atlanta). Then just read it and weep (assuming your on slow DSL. For a comparative, here were my numbers when just checked:

Berigan, 1257 dl and 217ul is pretty slow but operable (in an AOL dial-up sorta way). You may want to bypass the modem and do a test with the jack plugged directly to your computer. That’ll show you if you have a slow signal from the source or a modem that needs replacement/upgrade.

You now know everything I know about that.

Bob, Journalist…as GA (still needs name) team President, you get to make up the rules and have final say on the roster. Other than that, you may need to be available from time to time for beet writer interviews, eating at fine restaurants and such. You may want to start a book also. Team President’s, especially those that saw the Crackers in person, have a duty to inform those that weren’t there.

You also get to hire the GM. Grinch has been suggested but he’s playing hard to get.

Morning, all! Dang Berigan; that IS slow. Did you buy that computer from the kid in “Wargames?”

Lists of folks we’d like to have dinner with, huh? I see some of you are going to have a hard time understanding anything with folks speaking Greek, Latin, Aramaic and French. For that reason, I believe I’d stick to some good old fashioned engrish-speaking folks:

    Jonathan Swift
    Samuel Taylor Cooleridge
Carl Jung (he also spoke English in addition to his native tongue)
    Erwin Rommel (I’m learning German)
    Otto Von Bismark (ditto)
Johan Wolfgang von Goerthe (double ditto)
    Richard Pryor
    Winston Churchill
    Lemmy from Motorhead
Justin Wilson cooking up the Cajun food and a naked Scarlett Johansen serving drinks.

Of course, if I had a bevy of TRANSLATORS, I’d have another list. And a list of nothing but movie directors. And another of guitarists. And another of writers. And painters. And so forth and so on. How the heck can you just pick nine people? And who would just want to eat loaves and fishes (rice and sushi is another story)? Plus, you’ve got to have people at the table who were famous talkers, not who just did famous things. Otherwise, it might actually be quite boring.

    Off to the gym.

Sometimes you don’t really want to know what you don’t already know. A bit like knowing the secret to a magician’s trick. People are like that too. Sometimes when we get to know them, they become a little too ordinary. Would all our preconceived notions be dashed were we to discover that some of the folks on our list were obnoxious boors and not who we have been led to believe they were?

Sometimes it is good to still believe in Santa Clause. 🙂

I am sure that even we are careful not to let our hair down too much lest we be viewed as less than we want to be. Well, except for Berigan who has already let his hair down… 🙂

Bottom line, folks might be surprised as to the identities of some real heroes. The difference is often whether or not they have a publicist. I have know some heroes who were denied recognition because the medal “quota” had already been filled. I have witness a few incidents where by “heroics” were recognized and by the time the act was cited, I wondered if we were talking about the same time and place.

The Bible tells us that a prophet is never recognized in his home town. The secular version of this is an expert is defined as the guy from out of town with the briefcase…

If fellow who gave us the adage that “God gave us two ears and only one mouth” never realize we would have a computer keyboard and 8 fingers and 2 thumbs and high speed internet…..

Top of the morning, good folks, as the rains and winds have blown away from the southern rim of the capital city.

So, you guys awaiting the news from the Big Apple? There’s been a degree of panic on a lot of the message boards and blogs I’ve checked out since Tuesday’s announcement of the trade of Santana to the Mets. I, for one, am not too worried. Santana, indeed, is on the very short list of best pitchers in baseball. I wrote on bigleagueblog.net Tuesday night I believe Santana is the best lefty in the game, and his presence COULD make the difference in an NL East race in which the difference between the Braves, Mets and Phillies is razor thin.

With that said, I think the pundits who already have anointed the Mets the champions of the East are misguided. The Braves and the Phillies have made big upgrades this offseason. I think all three teams, the way they stand now, will come in somewhere between 85 and 90 victories. I also think both the D’Backs and Dodgers will come in between 92-97 victories, meaning the wild card is coming from the West.

As we embark on the 15th anniversary of the “Last Great Pennant Race,” between the Braves and Giants in 1993, we may have one heck of a battle brewing in the East. Braveheart, was it you who called it a “bloodbath” on the other blog? That’s a great word to describe it. I really, really think unless somebody gets hit with a major injury (like Wright or Tex or Rollins missing four months, something really big like that), this thing is gonna be one heck of a race for the duration of the season.

Should be fun! Bring it on!!

    The Scribe abides.

Scribe… I would agree that the anointing of the Mets as the team to beat based on the acquisition of one pitcher is a bit premature especially when the rest of the team has not been improved. Now, if the Phillies had acquired Santana I might conclude he would be a deal maker. I am going to stand by my statement made yesterday on another blog that it is my personal opinion that 2008 will be the year of the middle relief pitcher. It’s going to be the guys that come into the game in the 6ht and 7th innings and hold team who are going to be the difference between in the money and also ran….

Yeah, I think the 2008 season is gonna be a bloodbath for the NL East. I don’t think any team is outstanding, I think the Phils, Mets, and Braves will duke it out. I don’t think the Braves as they are presently constituted, have what it takes. I think they are gonna need one extra piece that will have to be added in July. Hopefully, this time it will be a pitcher. The Nats look so much better – although not good enough just yet to get over .500. And as Gil said yesterday about the Marlins, you just never know about them.

I think Johan will be great for the Mets but not the way some say he will. The NL East has 4 teams that score over 5 runs a game and the Nats look to have a much better offense on paper. So, I think it will be hard for him to get his ERA below 3.00.

But I was thinking about the Glavine & Johan thing. Instead of paying Glavine $8 mil, if they had just taken that $8 mil and put an extra $12 mil to it, couldn’t they have gotten Santana?

They promised many millions more would be spent and I really have not seen that promise fulfilled. I know some say they have spent $5 to $10 mil more but when you say many millions more, that means alot more to the fans. That was a hollow campaign promise.

I would expect the salary level to go back to the 2003 levels of about $105 million. If you take away Glavine’s $8 mil and put in Santana’s $20 mil, that would have brought the team to about $105 million.

That would have excited fans and made the team better. And I think it would have pushed attendance from the current 34,000 a game to 40,000 fans a game. Fans need the buzz and excitement. Getting Santana after getting Tex would have been a 1, 2 punch similar to McGriff and Maddux.

Attendance went up 10,000 fans a game to 47,000 fans a game when Maddux and McGriff were added. With that being said, I understand that the attendance increase had alot to do with the buzz created by the 1991 and 1992 World Series runs. But I think to make money, you have to spend money. You have to dream big. You have to add a star or two. You can’t rationalize sensible moves into extraordinary moves. All I see are small dreams from the Braves front office. It seems to be more of a can’t do rather than a will do attitude.

McGuirk says many millions more and then he regrets it. Why regret it? Why not follow through? Was that voting for the war before you voted against the war?

WW, I agree the NL east teams look better than ever, but I think not having to face David Ortiz, Sheffield, or Travis Hafner(and seeing hitters like Willie Harris and Orr instead) will help him keep his ERA around 3.00 or less. I think Tim Hudson was an aberration, most pitchers should be at an advantage coming from one league to the other….I don’t think anyone in the NL has quite the bugs bunny type of change up that Santana has.

I know if I was still on the other blog, there’d be no way I could say anything praiseworthy of a Mut player.

I am glad we are not in the other Eastern division. Gotta feel sorry for teams like the O’s Jays, and Rays…Tampa looks to be a much improved team, but unless the Yankees implode under new management, how is any team going to get above 3rd place????

Santana wanted 6 years, $168 mil?!?!?!?!?!?!? Is he nuts? And the Mets are willing to give him $152 million?!?!?!?!?!

Never mind my rant up above. No pitcher is worth that much money over that many years. No pitcher. Hitters, maybe. Pitchers, no.

Braveheart-I have no desire to do battle with Shaun about anything today. I’m really not sure what I even said about Chuck was controversial in the least. All I said was that I was glad Chuck was at the mini camp and hoped he was working on a third pitch, which would make him an even better pitcher than he already was. What can Shaun possibly object to with that? Maybe I’d better go check.

Howdy do Braves fans. Oh…looks like conversation is getting a little tense in Braves and Stuff. Dead horses being beaten? Not my old pal Thirsty Horse hopefully. The dreaded Mets fan designation being bandied about? Blog fight brewing? Other Blog spilling over? Oh, the duplicity!

Now Lew is being blamed for calling Berigan cousin It? Actually Lew, it’s cousin Itt. I’ll admit…that was my observation a while back, but it wasn’t intended to be an insult to the Hair Bear. Just an innocent acknowledgment of the obvious. Addams family stuff, that’s all. When Berigan combs his hair back he probably looks much better. Has two eyes, nose, mouth…everything.

No sense in getting testy. Or if one must get testy, refer to this testy. Just found out I have the same birthday as Sid Bream. Me and thunderin’ herd hizzone self.

well, tom glavine sure looks old. just looks old to this journalist. hope tom glavine has some magic in that old silk hat tom glavine wears. and mets fan and jimmy smith do not fit together in any sentence not containing the word not (clever use of not three times, carolina lady – for emphasis). and thankfully lew was not calling this journalist a mets fan. and cannot start a fight between lew and berigan over the cousin itt remark. both jimmy smith and savannah have tried. and what is with the facial hair of chuck james? trying to look like a duck? duck hair? not a cerebral look. not a cerebral approach to pitching, either. a third pitch would be beneficial – perhaps an out pitch rather than a hit it out pitch. oh, the humanity! will there be a new face in the rotation this year? and photos – chop seal has made another photo submission to carolina lady – but this is a controversial submission and may not receive carolina lady approval for posting on chop seal’s photo page. and if bloggers do not yet have cheese platters for the super bowl – time is running out.

Flange1, huh? I remember being friends with him on the other blog and being busy for a week or two (not blogging anywhere), then stopping back over there and having four or five folks come out of nowhere to be exceptionally nasty to me for no apparent reason. I recall him leading the charge; something to the effect of “Look who came back after only a few days with his tail stuck between his legs…they just can’t stay away, can they?” Perhaps he was only joking, though that usually comes with a follow up to indicate so. Clown shoe on the other foot now? Follow the page hits, I guess. 🙂 Anyhoo, no biggie; I’m no Grinch to hold a grudge. Welcome back and the hatchet shall be buried.

Third rule of Fight Club, someone yells Stop!, goes limp, taps out, the fight is over. Fourth rule, only two guys to a fight. Fifth rule, one fight at a time, fellas. Sixth rule, no shirt, no shoes. Seventh rule, fights will go on as long as they have to. And the eighth and final rule, if this is your first night at Fight Club, you have to fight. – Tyler Durden.

The IL President has issued a statement saying that Richmond is still considered their territory and any attempt by another league to talk with Richmond before the Braves actually move would mean a fine of between $25,000 and $50,000. To which most of the folks in this area have said.. “YEAH, RIGHT!!!”

I suspect we will get the Eastern League, Erie franchise which is AA. They currently have a working agreement with the Detroit Tigers. A lot of finger pointing as to who is at fault but I think the Braves have had this move in mind for a couple of years now. It makes sense for them. It just grates on folks to have someone say we are moving but you can’t talk to anyone else either.

The other folks on this blog will concur that I was pretty bummed out about it for a while. I still may switch over to the Nationals before it is all said and done. They are going about it the right way in that they are building an organization and not just a team. Plus I really like Manny Acta.

Greeting all… Tough to get facts about teams any more. So many smoke screens thrown up.

SG… I know, but when you have your heart broken it is really tough to forget, you might forgive but you never forget. 42 years is a long time, even to Journalist Bob…. It might have been different if I had seen it coming or had a chance to brace myself for it but wham… Out the door and gone. I feel so used…. 🙂

So, a couple of things I do know…. I won’t become a Mets fan even if Maine and Wright are Virginia boys. I would switch to the American League first.
I am very funny about who and what I will support. Perhaps I am a bit too Pollyannish but I still think people should keep their word. I am not going to trash the Braves, after all, I am not a Mets fan….. I am not into talking smack. I just think a lot of smoke is being blown right now by folks trying to act like they are not the bad guy.

To be honest, Richmond has some bigger needs right now than a ball park. So many years of corruption is hard to undo. When you have one of the biggest outlays per capita on schools in the state and you can’t even supply books to your student and have one of the worse levels of achievement in the state, you have deeper problems.

No, I will not obsess over it nor boor you all with our problems, I am sure ya’ll have enough of your own. Yes, I will root for the Braves this year but I may declare duel citizenship and secretly cheer for the Nationals too. We shall see. 😉

FBG, it is indeed fire night; I’m headed back out in a moment (though probably not for long). That particular kind of cake is sentimental to me.

Chris, I’m going the most expensive route possible and using the best stuff available (even infusing B-vitamins to aid in hangover reduction) and it still only comes out to about a dollar a pint. I could brew the equivilant of Budweiser for about a quarter.

Grinch, only bad thing about brewing your own is the fact that you have to wait a couple of weeks to drink it! Yep, a buck a pint is still cheap. Glad to hear that you’re using quality ingredients. After fourteen years in the alcohol distribution industry, I can tell you first hand that it makes a huge difference in the final product.

I’d be curious if the vitamins actually help. At what stage do you add them? I’d imagine that you’d add them after brewing the wort as the heat may have some detrimental effect on them.

I’ll reserve comment on Flange1 until after my hot tub but, I do find the post sent to the dean of insight, acumen and wit to be somewhat disconcerting if not presumptive … he is one to whom I most wanted to have my “final comments on events past” that I shared via email with David O’Brien and many of you … though I had not his address.

Grinch, having four or five folks come out of nowhere, and others out of the closet … seizing the moment they were … and those who refuse to accept accountability and responsibility for their own actions are generally quick to suggest that things be forgotten … it’s hard to laugh with them folks what can’t laugh at themselves … that’s more than just purty words … and it’s hard to reason with those whose only familiarity with the layers of the onion is tears … impossible with those who have replaced all their mirrors with beautiful Self Portraits, ‘cepting maybe Lew who’s a pretty good drawer.

Unless your brain is malfunctioning, I don’t understand the notion of forgetting … on request access time to the information increases with diminished use but, methinks the information is always there, available for triggering.

Can you imagine being admonished to forget? It’s called memory reinforcement.

That’s a good thing to consider before acting rashly … things are never forgotten … though there are those who would rewrite history. The best time to correct your mistakes is before you turn in your test paper.

Those of us who no longer choose to frequent the other Blog, so do for different reasons … and those who who have chosen to continue have their reasons … and each should be respected … but it is inane to suggest that we should forget that which caused us to reach our respective decisions … or that which we learned of ourselves and each other in the process … if indeed we could … lest history repeat itself.

Whatever it is that the guy over here who posts with 3 or 4 different names has, I for one hope that he retains … we should all be so gifted.

Good morning all, Interesting comments in today’s Times Dispatch about the miscommunication between the Braves and Mayor Wilder. Sad really, wars have been started over less…..

Great line from “Cool Hand Luke” come to mind: “What we have here is a failure to communicate”. I learned early on in my union work that it was often best to get the things with which folks could agree out on the table first to set the tone. Far too often people bring up those things they would disagree on first so both sides will dig in and nothing got done. Next thing you know, nobody is talking….

Jersey, you are spot on with your assessment on the VA. Some more broken promises by folks who feel they are superior or others trying to get by on the cheap. All of us owe a great debt to those who have served in the military. I salute you for your service too.

Bob-No I never forget anything, either. Despite Berigan’s assumption that I, as a pot smoking individual have burned out the gray cells, I have an almost photographic memory-not so much for the written word, but for circumstances and events. Almost total recall in vivid detail. I remember MY stance on the whole subject, quite well.

HOWEVER….One may not forget, but one may certainly get over it. In the scheme of your life, it shouldn’t have been a major seismic event. It is definitely time. I have found Flange to be a good, kind, intelligent correspondant very much in tune with our own way of thinking and I would expect him to be treated as such by the group of mature adults I hang out with. I disagreed with the vehemence of your stance, as well and I am still considered a friend to you all. You should remember that if you remember anything. Behave yourselves. You’re better than that.

Yes flange, I remember when the Flames moved to Calgary. It was hard for you to root for them after that I bet…

Richmond lost it’s American Hockey League team when A. H. Robbins was forced into bankruptcy by the Dalcon shield suit. That was a lot different. They use to draw around 5 to 6 thousand a night and I can remember the place being packed with about 10,000 folks.

I had season tickets and was a big fan club booster. Loved it, after the team was gone, other things sort of took over my life and I got away from hockey. Still love the sport though. Richmond now has a team in the relatively obscure Southern Hockey League. Not a lot of support by the city. It is a bit sad really. I think the local soccer team gets a bigger crowd.

Of course, I am sure there are some guys flying below the radar. 🙂 The list will ebb and flow as the season progresses. I think it is often in the eye of the beholder as to who is good and who is not. That is why major league teams employ cross checkers to make sure they don’t overlook anyone.

Great observation by Syd Thrift was that it was the best scouts who could spot talent early. By the time a kid reached his potential, everyone knew about him. the best bird dogs find the prospects no one else sees. That is what hurt the Nationals when their Dominican operation was shut down by MLB in the name of economy.

I am still waiting for some team to set up shop in China. You cannot tell me that in a country that big, there isn’t at least one major league pitcher waiting to be found… 🙂

Back in the fifties the Soviets did a lot of studies on the physical make up of their weight lifters. They found that those who had a tendon insertion point distal to others even by a few millimeters had a much greater potential for lifting because of better leverage. It was much more important than bulk. They would seek kids out and put them into sports where they could excel.

That could be a good explanation of why guys like Hudson can throw a 94 mph fastball. Of course some never reach their potential because they are lazy. Some never had the potential to begin with. Anatomy was against them.

I love the guitar but can’t play worth a darn… My fingers are too short. That and the fact I cut my left hand pretty badly when I was twelve. But to be honest, I just never had the potential.

If Wal Mart can have hundreds of stores in China, baseball can at least have a handful of teams.

Just like baseball, basketball, and football did perhaps more for race relations in this country than anyone else, someday a unified worldwide baseball and basketball league will do more for worldwide peace than any President ever will.

Or at least that is my hope.

I saw the story on CBS as well, about the Soldier with the skin Cancer who didn’t get the proper treatment, (or even a proper diagnosis?) very sad indeed. He was so strong and healthy at one time. I think the bad doctor stateside knew it was Cancer? He didn’t put the info in his folder that went to Iraq. but, people can’t sue Miltary doctors I believe? Sounds like BS to me, I think there are too many lawsuits, but if a doctor knows you have Cancer, and doesn’t bother to pass that info to you, or others that will have access to your medical records, that doctor needs to lose his medical licence….and go to jail….

Here is a weird but kinda cool story from yesterday by Alan Schwarz of the New York Times:

While the pending trade of Johan Santana to the Mets has shaken up Major League Baseball, a relatively unknown, submarine-throwing farmhand who might never reach the big leagues has also spent the week rattling his sport’s economics.

Randy Newsom, a reliever last season for the Cleveland Indians’ Class A and AA affiliates, set up a Web site through which fans and other outsiders could purchase a piece of his future major league earnings. Through Thursday, Newsom had sold about 1,800 shares of himself at $20 apiece. Each share afforded the bearer .002 percent of his career pay, uniting his goals with investors who hope he makes it big.

Dozens of minor leaguers had expressed interest in also going public through Newsom’s new company, Real Sports Investments, he said. Unfortunately for Newsom, however, his plan did not exactly thrill M.L.B., the players union or the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Offerings shopped over the Internet must be registered with the S.E.C., and Newsom’s was not. After speaking with a lawyer for M.L.B. on Thursday afternoon, Newsom decided to table his idea to work with authorities on a venture they would approve and perhaps even support.

“We want to pause to hear everyone’s concerns,” Newsom said, adding that he would refund $36,000 to his hundreds of investors. “This idea is not going away. This is assured by the amount of fan support, and the amount of players we talked to, that the support is there. The spirit of this idea will go on.”

That idea, Newsom said, was to supplement minor leaguers’ meager wages — usually about $8,000 for a five-month season — while building a unique bond among fans and players.

“People get up and look at their players’ stats every day, and root for them as they go through the minor leagues,” said Newsom, who is considered only a marginal major league prospect because of his below-average fastball. “This can be the same type of thing, where fans have a tiny vested interest in hoping a guy does well.”

Converting future earnings into upfront revenue is not new in business or sports; David Bowie has sold his royalty rights in the form of offshore bonds, and young golfers are often backed by speculative businessmen. Here, rather than collect inanimate rookie cards, fans would invest in tiny pieces of real farmhands.

Under the tabled plan, whereby he would have sold off 5 percent of any future major league income, Newsom would have needed to earn about $2 million for his shareholders to break even. That would have required a career of at least three full seasons, which for a player of Newsom’s caliber — he called himself the “quintessential antiprospect” — is unlikely.

The average major league career lasts between four and five seasons and the average salary stands at $2.8 million. But those figures are boosted by the small minority of players who play seven-plus years and score eight- or nine-figure contracts. Most earn around $450,000 a year for a few seasons — when they are among the 10 percent of minor league hopefuls who reach the big leagues even for one day.

Then again, under Newsom’s structure, a $100 investment in Mike Piazza when he was a lowly Dodgers farmhand in 1990 would have ultimately been worth about $6,000.

“If you’re looking at this solely as an investment opportunity, then we’re probably not the place for you,” Newsom said. “We want to add to the spectating experience for fans, and at the same time do something good for the players.”

Newsom’s plan, first reported by Baseball Prospectus and picked up by several other Web sites, caused a stir among club executives. A minor league player’s selling a piece of future earnings probably runs afoul of major league guidelines designed to insulate players from gamblers, as well as union rules regarding payments to and from agents.

Officials at M.L.B. and the union would say only that they were aware of Newsom’s idea and were discussing its ramifications.

If nothing else, Newsom’s venture highlights minor leaguers’ hidden financial hardships. Their annual salaries must cover housing, meals, clubhouse dues and more, leaving many minor leaguers — some of whom support families — sharing two-bedroom apartments with three or four teammates. Jon Searles, a pitcher in the San Diego Padres system last season, joked that a trip to Quiznos was “living large.”

Searles said he loved Newsom’s plan from a player and fan standpoint. But Searles, who also happens to have an economics degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, had some concerns about whether Newsom could attract blue-chip, profitable prospects to participate.

“Don’t get me wrong — $50,000 can be everything to a player in the minor leagues,” Searles said. “But the risk of them committing 5 percent in perpetuity for a quick $50,000, there’s a break-even point where only players who aren’t characterized as prospects might do it. And rational investors will assess those percentages.”

Newsom has heard the doubters and insisted his well-meaning idea is only emerging from its cocoon. He has been a little distracted, too — he has also been studying for his Law School Admission Test on Saturday.

“I’m hoping I don’t have to go to law school until I finish my career at 40 or 42,” Newsom said with a laugh. “We’ll see.”

What would happen if an investor pulled his finger? Perish the thought. Not pretty.

People forget from where the foundation of out country sprang forth. Or maybe they didn’t… After all, Patrick Henry gave his famous oratory in St Johns church. Ministers of all faiths have used the pulpit to press forward their own ideas. After all, it is religion that provides the moral compass for our great republic.

Now, having said that, one cannot allow charlatans to hide behind the mask of religion to the detriment of the public good. It is a bit like the government hiding behind the mask of sovereign immunity. It is not impossible to sue the government, just daggone hard to do. Like everything else, if someone feels they cannot be held accountable, they tend to get pretty slack.

I guess your perspective depends largely upon your experiences in life. I grew up in a neighborhood that was seemingly half filled with illegal aliens from Ireland. Every night, a new handful of people right off the boat would show up at the dozens of bars in my Irish neighborhood, suitcase in hand, looking for work and a place to stay.

All they did was work all day doing grunt labor, go to the bar and drink all night, flirt with women, get into a fistfight – usually because they were flirting with women, and get up at the crack of dawn, usually on 3 hours of sleep and work all day again the next day. Many of the illegal aliens I have known – Irish, Mexican, Dominican, Columbian, Italian, whatever – are the same exact way. There are the few bad apples who ruin it for the rest and take advantage of the system. But the great majority of them are chasing the American dream of better jobs for the adults and better education for their children.

When you would ask the illegal Irish aliens why they were there, almost every single one of them would say because I was tired of my countrymen being treated like the n**ggers of Europe. Sorry for the use of that word but that was the exact word almost every single one of them would use to talk about their experience living in Ireland …… and they loved America …… not for our benefits or entitlements ….. but for our dreams, jobs, education, opportunities

I’m way behind in news so y’all probably already know this:

    http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/story/10613413/rss

    CBSSports.com wire reports

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The woman who was killed when former World Series star Jim Leyritz crashed his SUV into her car had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit.

According to a toxicology report released Friday, 30-year-old Fredia Ann Veitch had a blood-alcohol level of 0.18. Florida’s legal limit is 0.08. Leyritz’s blood-alcohol content three hours after the crash was 0.14 percent.

Leyritz, 44, pleaded not guilty Thursday to a recently added charge of DUI manslaughter by unlawful blood-alcohol levels. He previously pleaded not guilty to a charge of DUI manslaughter with impairment in Veitch’s death. Leyritz faces 15 years in prison if convicted.

“It doesn’t affect the cause of the crash because he ran a red light,” Assistant State Attorney Stefanie Newman said.

Leyritz’s attorney, Mike Dutko, said the information could change the way the prosecution proceeds.

“Pre-crash conditions and circumstances become terribly, terribly relevant,” Dutko said. “There’s a lot that needs to be investigated, analyzed and evaluated here.”

Police said Leyritz drove his sport utility vehicle through a red light Dec. 28 in Fort Lauderdale and crashed into Veitch’s car.

Leyritz was ordered Thursday to take daily breath tests while he awaits trial on DUI manslaughter charges.

He played for six major league teams and was last in the majors in 2000, ending his 11-year career. In 1996, he homered for the New York Yankees in Game 4 of the World Series against Atlanta. The homer made it 6-6, and the Yankees won in 10 innings. New York took the series in six games for its first title in 18 years.

Since I brought up my neighborhood, here is an old article about John McCain’s visit to my old neighborhood and his promises to the illegal aliens in that neighborhood. It may or may not be one of the reasons you either vote or don’t vote for him. For me, it is a reason I can tolerate him if he is the choice for President.

Senator John McCain, who has hopes of running for US president in 2008,
promised full legal status for tens of thousands of illegal Irish at a town
hall meeting in the Irish neighbourhood of Woodlawn, New York, this
    weekend.

There are an estimated 50,000 Irish illegal immigrants in the U.S.; 30,000 of them are thought to live in New York City. Today, this tiny corner in the northern reaches of the Bronx is perhaps the most heavily Irish-born neighborhood in New York, and advocates believe that as many as 40% of local immigrants are undocumented.

To the strain of “We’re all part of Jackie’s Army”, the unlikely anthem of
the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform, Mr McCain took the podium before an audience of hundreds of Tricolour and US-flag waving supporters in a
neighbourhood that has seen many people return to Ireland because of post 9/11 immigration clampdowns.

While the line “We’re all off to Italy” from Ireland’s 1990 World Cup song
Put ‘Em Under Pressure may seem inappropriate for immigrants determined to stay in the US, Mr McCain took it in good spirits, nodding his head in
approval as the “Olé, Olé, Olé” chorus kicked in.

Mr McCain, along with Senator Edward Kennedy, is sponsoring the so-called
“McCain-Kennedy” immigration reform Bill in the US Senate. This contains
provisions for a guest-worker programme and a way for those living in the US illegally to work toward citizenship.

Interviewed on the This Week programme on RTÉ Radio yesterday, he said there was a “very significant” Irish influence on the campaign to grant legal
status to illegal immigrants in the US. He said he did not know how long the
legislative battle over the issue would take.

Hundreds of people, many of them wearing “Legalize The Irish” T-shirts,
crammed into the St Barnabas School’s auditorium on the Bronx-Yonkers border for his weekend speech while dozens more listened on speakers set up outside the hall.

To laughter from the audience, the senator repeatedly had to ask bar owner and Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform deputy chairman, Ciarán Staunton, to translate some of the audience questions into American English.

In answer to one question, he said he didn’t know why Congressman Peter
King, a close ally of Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams, was co-sponsoring a
Bill that would make illegal immigration an aggravated felony crime.

To loud applause from the audience, he said Mr King needed a “better
education” from the Irish community on the realities of undocumented
    immigration.

Asked about President Bush’s credibility on immigration issues by Irish
woman Mags O’Brien from Stanford, Connecticut, Mr McCain said the president had a lot of experience on illegal immigration issues as Governor of Texas and viewed immigration reform positively.

A woman who identified herself only as Siobhán, asked Mr McCain how he felt about a possible presidential run by Congressman Tom Tancredo, who is strongly anti-immigrant.

“Come on in,” Mr McCain said, addressing Congressman Tancredo directly, “the water’s fine”.

On his own possible run for the presidency in 2008, Mr McCain joked that the only members of Congress that were ever ruled out of a presidential run were either incapacitated or in detox.

ww, I guess my concern regards the nearly 100 US hospitals that have been bankrupted and doors closed because of the high cost of free medical treatment for illegals who do not pay. Also, Parkland Hospital in Dallas, which has the largest maternity ward in the US, where a baby of an illegal is born an average of every 48 seconds 24/7/365 – for free. Multiple generations made that a practice.

Also, for the school systems, already strapped for cash, are required to provide Spanish-speaking translators in every room because the kids haven’t learned English. And all text books translated to Spanish. And demands that everything be provided in Spanish. Because they don’t want to learn the language.

Also, the extremely high rate of Social Security fraud from stolen SS numbers, high-profile brutal Mexican gangs taking hold in many cities in the US, increases in cases of diseases such as TB being brought in by illegals.

Also, our southern border. Chavez and others like him are cozy with certain Arab terrorist groups and others who hate the US. Chavez has sworn to do everything he possibly can to “bring down the US” and he uses every penny he gets from the sale of CitGo (which he owns) gas in the US towards that goal. With Mexican transports now free to cross the border and go anywhere in the US, terrorists have an easy path toward any target of their choice.

The overall cost to the US taxpayer is astronomical when free medical care, free education, food stamps, welfare, Aid to Mothers and Children, and all the other social programs these people latch onto and drain.

Those are some of the reasons I am against ILLEGAL immigration. Note, that is ILLEGAL immigration.

CL, I understand. And I’m not trying to fight with you at all. Just providing a different perspective based upon my own experiences.

The Irish illegal aliens are less of a problem because (1) they can speak English; (2) They generally move into communities that they pump their money into; (3) Their parents generally pay for them to go to the local Catholic school of the type where Mr. McCain gave his speech and any parent that sends their child to public school is looked down upon; (4) They significantly contribute to the financial welfare of the local church; (5) They work jobs in that community that the first, second, and third generation Irish Americans in that neighborhood have no interest in doing.

For example, in the early 1990s in my neighborhood, after Rudy Guiliani and previous mayors had aggressively altered the landscape of Manhattan neighborhoods to Disney them up and make them more attractive to tourists and property investors, there was an explosion in the number of illegal aliens flocking to my neighborhood because Guiliani had eliminated the old neighborhoods.

This could have been seen as bad but it was great for my neighborhood because there was a total revitalization of the neighborhood with new bars, stores, restaurants opening up. Whatever the financial cost may have been to the individual taxpayer was offset by the newfound financial prosperity in the neighborhood. All apartments were occupied. New houses were erected and built. Old houses were bought and occupied.

And they were not taking jobs from any first or second or third generation Irish Americans in the neighborhood because those of us who fell into that category were going to school and college and going down to Manhattan to work and were not interested in that sort of grunt labor the illegal alien was willing to do. Their willingness to do this work also made some first and second and third generation Irish Americans in the neighborhood very well off because they owned businesses as independent contractors where they could use the illegal Irish aliens to work and compete for bids and jobs against their competitors.

So, I’m not trying to fight with you but people only tend to look at the cost of the illegal aliens and not the financial benefits of it which are often more than the cost.

Anytime you hear about an American cry about an illegal alien taking their jobs, ask them why is that? Why, with all the educational opportunities available to you in this country, have you been so darn lazy that you have marginalized yourself to the point that an illegal alien who can’t speak English an take a job away from you? That sounds like a you problem I tell them, not an illegal alien problem.

Break from honey-do. Where are the bees when you need’em.

Southern Jackass has made an appearance. Has been bird watching? Horse watching too? Bruised ribs? Must have been a hard kick and a broken rib to stay away so long. Only hurts when typing. Have some ice cream and blackberry cobbler. Universal healer.

Braveheart, Many Irish settled in Savannah. Many good Irish jokes sprang from that. Learned them all from my Irish friends. Personally, I love ethnic hmor as long as it’s respectable. Way too much PC out there nowadays. If we each can’t laugh at ourselves, we miss out on the humor of our differences.

Anyway, John McCain could only be, at the very most, merely tolerated. Four years of him and we’d a one party system of government…a large government at that. Maybe bring back the Whigs. Won’t go into it here on the Braves and Stuff, but you can always tell when he’s lying…he looks you in the eye. That’s opposite of most who lie. Besides, those shoulder pads and upturned “victory” thumbs and crazed smile and rocking on tip toes would get old after about 10 seconds. Being a war “hero”, as he touts himself, does not make you an automatic fit for leading the nation.

Now, off of politics and onto movie classics discussion. Manchurian Candidate. Life imitates art? Oh, the humanity!

Best get back to work now lest I get my knuckles rapped.

CL…it’s not raining…sun’s out…almost warm. Mother Nature called; you’ve offended no one! Besides, you and I’ve already traded ‘vents’ off-line. Disclosure to all, with a nod to Gil, we agree in principle, so we could disagree on details. That process refines both our views of the big picture so it can be properly tackled! How’s that synopsis, CL? 🙂

WW…your words so echo the complexity and simplicity of the issue. There’s scarcely a one of us willing to ‘toss the baby with the bathwater’ in calling out illegal immigrants. For the most part, it’s not to this country’s advantage to do so. Heck, one could make the case that there are no illegals, since so many are here with a ‘wink and a nod’. The burning question in my view is, how to resolutely legalize Emma Lazarus’ welcoming poem:

“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

It’s ‘we’ who have to decide to elect those who will, not merely gripe about their failures to do so. See, CL, there’s more than room enough on this soapbox, no?

Illegal immigration to me is not really about economics or taking jobs…it’s just breaking the law and breaking into line. America needs and wants immigrants, particularly the ones that come here and are willing to do the labor that we are either too proud or lazy or overqualified to do. We also need immigrants to come and do the scientific or engineering work that we need.

Then, as immigrants meld into society, become citizens and get themselves educated, they too can reach for the stars in this free enterprise system.

Mostly it’s about national security. So many want to do us harm. We must screen who arrives.

Besides, just look what illegal immigration did to the American Indian.

Alright, yeah, I’ll stop the political crap. I blame CL for that. 🙂

Savannah, I agree with you about the ethnic humor. Growing up in New York, with people of every nationality in one little area, we all told extremely racist jokes to each other’s faces and everyone would just laugh about it and rarely get offended.

John Rocker was someone who I think made the mistake of taking that kind of stupid lockerroom humor out to a reporter looking to prey upon him. What Rocker said is nothing that almost every single New Yorker has not said to each other a million times. So, I never understood the uproar about it. Did anyone truly think he believed those things? Or was he just trying to be outrageous and funny like a lot of stupid young guys do? Just a bunch of media elitists during a slow news period looking to take advantage of a stupid kid and play off harmful stereotypes by portraying him as just another country rube redneck from Macon.

I don’t think any New Yorker was offended by him. I know he had batteries and stuff thrown at him in Shea but that was just people acting like a bunch of barbarians with a pack mentality. It had almost nothing to do with being offended with what he actually said. Just a bunch of people trying to be clowns like Rocker was trying to be a clown.

Believe me. If Rocker, even after making those comments, was at the top of his game and played for a New York team, they would have loved him and not cared one bit about his comments. The media would have cared but not the regular Joe who goes to the games – including all the “types” of people he remarked on.

Alright, I am talking too much and not being much fun and am annoying people at this point.

When is Lew’s post coming already?

    Have a good day.

    ITALIAN MATH

An Italian man wants a job, but the foreman won’t hire him until he passes a little math test.

“Here’s your first question,” the foreman said.

“Without using numbers, represent the number 9.” “Without numbers?” the
Italian says, “Data easy.” and he proceeds to draw three trees.

“What’s this?” the boss asks. “Ave you got no brain? Tree and tree and
tree makea nine,” says the Italian.

“Fair enough,” says the boss. “Here’s your second question. Use the same
rules, but this time the number is 99.”

The Italian stares into space for a while, then picks up the picture
that he has just drawn and makes a smudge on each tree. “Ere you go.”

The boss scratches his head and says, “How on earth do you get that to
    represent 99?”

“Each of da trees isa dirty now. So, it’s dirty tree, and dirty tree,
and dirty tree. Dat is 99.”

The boss is getting worried that he’s going to actually have to hire
this Italian, so he says, “All right, last question. Same rules again,
    but represent the number 100.”

The Italian stares into space some more, then he picks up the picture
again and makes a little mark at the base of each tree and says, “Ere
    you go. One hundred.”

The boss looks at the attempt. “You must be nuts if you think that
represents a hundred!” (You’re going to love this one!!!)

The Italian leans forward and points to the marks at the base of each
tree and says, “A little doga came along and crapa by eacha tree. So now
you gota dirty tree and a turd, dirty tree and a turd, and dirty tree
and a turd, data makea one hundred. So, when I’m a gonna start?”

The interviewer apologized. “I checked the paper and the boxscore said you had two hits. The third must have been a typographical error.”

“Hell, no,” Berra replied. “It was clean single to left.”

A Greek and Italian were sitting in a Starbuck’s one day discussing who had
the superior culture. Over triple lattes the Greek guy says,”Well, we have
    the Parthenon.”

Arching his eyebrows, the Italian replies, “We have the Coliseum.”

The Greek retorts, “We Greeks gave birth to advanced mathematics”

The Italian, nodding agreement, says, “But we built the Roman Empire.”

And so on and so on until the Greek comes up with what he thinks will end the
discussion. With a flourish of finality he says, “We invented sex!”

The Italian replies, “That is true, but the Italians introduced it to women.”

On a windy day in San Francisco, third baseman Rocky Bridges called for a popup.

He drifted past the shortstop, past the pitcher on the mound, past the second baseman. Finally, he was standing next to first baseman Vic Power as the ball fell four feet behind them.

The next day, the newspaper ran a string of song parodies, one targeting Bridges:
“A tisket, a tasket. I should have brought a basket.”

Bridges awaited the writer in the clubhouse the following day. “Hey you, c’mon over here. I read what you wrote in the paper.”

    “And?”

“And it bothered me so much I couldn’t sleep last night. I’ve got to ask you… How does the tune to that song go?”

I guess it’s only natural that folks measure maturity in terms of themselves … “I am mature so those who act and think as I, are and those who do not, ain’t … complete fools, say I”.

I’m mostly of Scot/Irish/English/Wales ancestry but since I had 24 pints of emergency lifesaving blood pumped into/through me 25 years ago, I suppose I’m a little bit of everything now. Carol says not to worry, most of it wound up on the ceiling, the surgeon’s dinner jacket, and his shoes.

Always liked the Irish … except when we played them in football … I like Mexicans too, especially them what know how to fix real good tamales and such … I can understand how we might have a problem with folks from north and south of our borders sneakin’ in … but, how in the world do we have significant numbers sneakin’ in from the east an west? … submarine?

Forgetting the rhetoric, I honestly didn’t realize that we had significant numbers of “illegals” … other than those crossing our northern and southern borders … from, Canada, Mexico and below.

I admit to being a bit bemused by William Wallace’s assessment of the Irish Illegals in his community … “The Irish illegal aliens are less of a problem because (1) they generally move into communities into which they pump their money; (2) their parents generally pay for them to go to the local Catholic school; (3) they significantly contribute to the financial welfare of the local church; and (4) They work jobs within the community that others have no interest in doing.

This is intended to be neither humorous nor argumentative though it may otherwise so seem … it almost seems that they are affluent children … (1) excluding inferred financial support of their parents, from whence comes the money that they bring into the community?; (2) are Irish illegal aliens allowed in the public schools?; (3) Are those whose parents don’t pay the Catholic school tuition let in for free?; (4) are the financial contributions to the church from the funds provided their parents or from the after school jobs in which others have no interest?; (5) how affluent is this community where jobs in which others have no interest pay so much as to allow them to so conduct themselves?; and (6) are their parents illegal aliens too?

I really do understand Sir William and you shant lose your head for having so eloquently said … drawn and quartered, maybe.

I think the question is begged as to why we find ourselves with significant numbers of “illegal aliens” … I think politics should be removed from the solution. Those of far higher intellect and much better acumen than I have long considered the problem … it’s truly complex … but a solution is critical to the well being of us all. I happen to oppose the solutions proffered by so called liberal elements but all sincere, nonpolitical agenda based efforts should be applauded, regardless of from whence they come … the problem needs to be addressed.

I don’t know about McCain … beet righter, Manchurian Candidate? … good? bad? … a survivor yes, but I never understood his “hero” status. Me, I’m voting for Ronald Reagan … or Jimmy Smith.

A couple of brave baseball mentions on mlbtraderumors.com (Of a Stark Column)

Javy Lopez has been working on his catching game with the Braves’ bench coach, and is expected to go north with the team as their backup backstop.
Ryan Drese could end up being just one more example of a successful Braves’ reclamation project on the mound.

I like Javy, I really do, and wish him the best. But, I do also feel sorry for Clint Sammons and Bryan Pena, since it looks like unless Javy hits .150 in spring training(And even with that he would probably make it) they won’t have a chance in ….heck to make the team.
I guess why it bothers me a bit was seeing some footage of Sammons working out indoors back in December, just sounding so determined to get a job with the club….Used to be all you wanted/expected from a back up catcher was good defense and to hit at least .220…. Now event that doesn’t guarantee a job…but, I like Javy…..sigh….can’t we carry 26 palyers???

Interesting to look at Pena’s numbers. He’s a .303 hitter in the minors yet only has a .221 average in the bigs. That’s a mighty big differential.

What I missed in between several trips to Minorleagueland was the 2004 season were he was decent, 14-10 with a 4.20 ERA. Still, 233 hits in 207 innings, and only 98 strikeouts…Not a real great fastball before the injury??? Seems like we have some pretty good arms in the bullpen already, where would he fit in???

Anyway, it’s all good. By the time the actual election rolls around, we may just all want to go to Cuba, or annex it. Could be a win, win… Oh well, we will save that discussion for another day.

It is tough trying to speculate on the up coming season even before the first arm is torn up or the fist knee is twisted. So many little things can happen to change an entire season. It is why you try to have 8 starting pitchers ready when you break camp. You are not going to make the entire season without somebody going down for a while.

Sammons…. ?? Naw, he is just a kid, he has a long career ahead of him. It will do him more good to get 500 at bats in Richmond that to get rusty on the bench in Atlanta. Pena… well, let’s see what he does this spring.

I also got the new blog lead in to CL-better late than never.

THree predictions for Pleasant Braves’ surprises this year.

1.Kelly Johnson will become an outstanding player.

2.Javy Lopez is looking in REAL good shape. They ran an article in the new Chop Talk. His catching reportedly has been considerably improved. I think not only will he make the team as McCann’s backup, but will provide something that’s been sadly lacking-Power off of the bench. He will be back.

3.Kotsay will remain healthy, hit at least his .280 lifetime average and he and Francoeur will be 1-2 in outfield assists.

    4. The Kotsay and Javy deals will make Frank Wren look like a genius. Less than $3 mil for the pair.

I was thinking about Jason earlier tonight … our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with him.

Thinking about Joe Brave too … seems like we haven’t heard from him since Christmas.

Lew, do you think we might carry a 3rd catcher then??? Can’t use Javy in the 6th with the bases loaded(batting for the pitcher) without another catcher, right??

Top of the morning, everybody. Look what happens when I come down with a horrible cold Friday night, end up sleeping through most of Saturday and don’t turn on the laptop until Sunday …

The good ol’ Braves and Stuff exploded.

More than 500 posts! JerseyGil and Flange1 arrive. Welcome, both of you. SJA returns. All kinds of interesting talk, some baseball related, some not-so-related but still, interesting.

Not sure who made the comment above, but when you have reasonable adults present, you can have a conversation about touchy issues and perhaps all of us can learn something by listening to different viewpoints, instead of having to wade through childish rhetoric.

Anyway, for what it’s worth, I predicted 30-23 Patriots on http://www.bigleagueblog.net last night. Actually filed it Friday afternoon and had it posted yesterday; could barely get out of bed with this cold, but feeling a little better this morning.

I love how everybody has anointed the Mets as the NL East champions. I really, really think getting Santana pulls them dead even with the Braves and Phillies. It’s going to be an unbelievable race, I believe, and we’ll have a lot more to say about that as we count down to the first pitch.

Time for medicine, and breakfast. Enjoy your Super Sunday.

OVER 500 POSTS!!! CONGRATULATIONS BRAVES AND STUFF DENIZENS

This place is rockin’. A blog is a good blog when you can get online and spend a while reading…and laughing…and thinking about the diverse points of view, pleasant repartee and good humor.

Congratulations Carolina Lady! To use one of your old analogies, you are the thread that holds this fabric together. And Scribe is right about reasonable adults and touchy subject matter. Ladies and Gents seem to be able to do that without getting personal or going negative. Controversial does not have to be confrontational.

Condolences and God bless to Jason in Maine and his family.

Lew, I’m encouraged by your predictions and the current outlook on Javy. If Kelly has been practicing going to his right and working on staying on the bag in a double-play scenario he’ll be a fine second bagger. He’s already got an Olerud potential with his bat. Your number three, on Kotsay and Frenchy being 1-2 in assists would surprise me, but here’s hoping you’re right.

Scribe, I like the new header on your blog. Warriors all. A fine set of articles there too. I’ve been enjoying reading through. Good stuff. Good luck with the cold. Lots’a “bugs” out there now. I’ve been wimpy myself this week with an Atlanta bug that I brought back with me.

Ugandan citropsis root in chili? Side effects? Had to google that one. Oh, my…Grinch, be very careful is right. Could be an interesting Super Bowl party.

Peter Gammon’s take on the Santana trade….Let’s hope the slider stays lost, eh what??? 😉
Mets get best pitcher on the planet

    ——————————————————————————–

C.C. Sabathia’s wish list for 2008 is first, for the Cleveland Indians to win the World Series, and second, for the New York Yankees to miss the playoffs.

    Ring.

    Then bling.

One can argue that the landscape never was the same after the San Francisco Giants gave Barry Zito $126 million last winter, because Zito isn’t Johan Santana. Perhaps no one is Johan Santana. He makes the New York Mets the clear favorites to win the National League pennant in 2008, his picture will be up on Hank Steinbrenner’s wall next to the picture of Brian Cashman and he is the reason the Indians have no chance of re-signing Sabathia unless someone finds oil in Lake Erie.

“We’d better enjoy [Josh] Beckett the next three years,” one Boston Red Sox official said, “Because we won’t be able to sign him after his deal is up after 2010.”

Bill Smith was handed the Minnesota Twins’ general manager job, knowing that Torii Hunter was history, knowing that he was going to have to trade the best pitcher in the game. Now, it’s easy to say he should have taken Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera and Jeff Marquez (from the Yankees), or maybe Jacoby Ellsbury, Jed Lowrie and Justin Masterson (from the Red Sox — although Boston officials said that once Santana turned down a $100 million, five-year deal from the Twins, they knew they couldn’t sign him). Both offers, as the New York Post’s Joel Sherman pointed out, were “B-plus deals,” while Smith opted for a “C-minus deal” that doesn’t include a position player as good as Ellsbury or a pitcher close to Hughes or Masterson.

Most other general managers assumed that somewhere, somehow Steinbrenner would force Cashman to cave in, which did not happen. By this week, Hughes was off the table, the Red Sox had pared their offer and, in Smith’s mind, all that was left was what the Mets were offering. In addition, Omar Minaya’s dogged persistence never allowed Smith to re-examine the notion of going for it all in 2008, then accepting two draft picks who might or might not be close to as good as Carlos Gomez and Deolis Guerra.

The Oakland A’s received more by trading Dan Haren to the Arizona Diamondbacks than the Twins got for Santana. If the Baltimore Orioles decide to trade Erik Bedard, they will get more for him, who is a week older than Santana and never has thrown 200 innings in a season. The Diamondbacks control Haren through 2010, and if the Seattle Mariners acquire Bedard, they will control him through 2010, too. Hey, the Athletics may well have gotten more from the Chicago White Sox for Nick Swisher than the Twins got for the best pitcher on the planet, especially if Fautino De Los Santos is as good as Oakland thinks he is.

No matter what some other teams think about Gomez or how far Guerra is from the majors, the Mets still had to shell out four of their top 10 prospects and pay somewhere between $137 million and $151 million to acquire Santana. Now, when the Nippon Ham Fighters decide to post Yu Darvish — the half-Iranian, half-Japanese phenom — can they expect to get a $100 million posting fee in addition to whatever Darvish can extract from the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox or Los Angeles Dodgers? Probably. No prospects will be involved, and those players carry significant value.

Sabathia might not be Santana in terms of his longterm viability, but we are looking at $20 million per season if the Yankees don’t make the playoffs this season and the Mets play the Red Sox in the World Series. No wonder the Indians haven’t traded Cliff Lee or Jeremy Sowers, and will keep developing Adam Miller as a starting pitcher.

We know that the Los Angeles Angels will quickly pick up John Lackey’s option for 2009, as the Dodgers will with Brad Penny’s option. But those two and Kelvim Escobar all can become free agents after ’09. Beckett, Haren and Brandon Webb all will have their contracts up after 2010.

Minaya deserves immense credit for holding on to the vision that what he most needed wasn’t Livan Hernandez or Kyle Lohse, but rather a legitimate ace. Now Pedro Martinez can pitch at whatever pace he needs, and John Maine and Oliver Perez are backed up into more comfortable roles in the middle of the Mets’ rotation. And if Mike Pelphrey develops a swing-and-miss breaking ball, Minaya still will have the best arm in the organization.

Fred and Jeff Wlipon deserve credit for looking at their marvelous ballpark opening in 2009 and for being willing to spend the money to have a 30-year old superstar left-hander pitch that home opener, a 30-year-old whose athleticism, delivery and intensity should carry him right through his mid-30s. They will have $76 million tied up in Santana, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Martinez and Billy Wagner, but they also have David Wright and Jose Reyes, the best young players in the sport, for a combined $9 million in ’08, the last fully guaranteed year of Delgado’s contract.

Even when he struggled in the last five weeks of last season when he lost his slider, Santana was down only 1 or 2 mph in velocity, and the Indians, who won every one of their five matchups with him, said his stuff was as good as ever. The delivery and arm speed that make his changeup so great shouldn’t diminish in the seven years of his contract with the Mets, barring a freak injury.

Since Santana went into the Twins’ rotation for good on July 11, 2003, he is the winningest pitcher in the game at 78-34; Roy Oswalt and Carlos Zambrano are next, with 74 and 71 wins respectively. Among pitchers who have thrown a minimum of 750 innings in those 4½ seasons, Santana has the lowest ERA (2.92) and the most strikeouts per nine innings (9.63).

Now take him out of the American League and put him into the National League, which essentially is Divison 1-A.

Someday the Yankees might rue the day they did not get Santana. The Red Sox might rue the day they didn’t put Santana next to Beckett, then figure out how to make Beckett whole on the $13 million difference in their respective contracts.

But the Mets had the money, they were in the right place and Minaya never gave up. In the wars of the ballpark openings, regional television networks and My Back Pages, the Mets have struck a mighty blow.

And in the National League East, where the Phillies and Braves are very good and very aggressive, the Mets now have what no one else has.

The best pitcher on the planet.

Now baseball…. Yes, the Mets are a shoo-in, with Santana and David Wright… How can the ever lose another game?

Still say this is going to be the year of the middle reliever… It is the trend of baseball for the starters not to go as deep into the game as once was the norm. The only time having a dominant starting pitcher really makes a difference is when you get into the play-offs. It allows for a team to get by with 3 good pitchers. But you have to get there first. Having a starting 8 verses a starting 5 will assure more success.

Good morning Jersey… I agree that Pena will likely be traded simply because the Braves don’t have a position for him. I think Washington will pass because they just signed Estrada but they will have until the end of March to see if LoDuca recovers from his knee surgery. I would have to think it would be really tough for a catcher to get over it quickly. Barry Bonds never did recover fully. I haven’t either. True LoDuca is a lot younger but folks just don’t know how their body is going to respond.

The same happen to Philadelphia, Just Carlos Ruiz and Coste..if any of this two going down, there will looking for a good backup and the Braves are stock in that position.

    Minaya deserves immense credit

More like an immense credit card. Minaya is brilliant…just like everyone that was buying tech stocks in the late 90’s. The old adage, “better to be lucky than smart” may need revising to read, as a GM, it’s “better to be rich than smart”.

Will the outrageous money raise all boats or sink the MLB? I’d say neither. The added revenues will come from you and I. Baseball (all sports for that matter) are becoming a more expensive sport, whether attending games or even watching on TV. Then again, some Hollywood actors make twice what Santana will make in half the amount of time. So, it’s all crazy.

Back to reality. Can you imagine what happens to the Mets if Santana goes on the DL for an extended period? How about if Maine or Hernandez or one of their other starters goes down. What about the bullpen…what if they struggle? The Mets have taken a HUGE risk here. It may be all or nothing.

Hopefully Mets prove to be the rabbit and Braves will play the turtle in 08. We know how that story ended.

I will worry about the Mets when they get Livan Hernanadez AND Kyle Lohse in addition to Santana. Then they would have depth. As it stands now, they will have Pedro go down (no way he replaces Glavine’s innings or wins) and ElDuque will go down (42 and chronically injured-only pitched 147 innings last year).

For the entire months of August and September, a full 1/3 of the season, Maine had an ERA of 5.46, Perez an ERA of 4.74, El Duque 5.40 and Pelfrey, 5.57 for the year. The Mets also had a losing record from May 26 until the end of the season. They have done NOTHING whatsoever to improve their offense.

Their outfield could very well end up being Endy Chavez, Beltran and Ryan Church or Marlon Anderson when the injuries (almost certainly) will hit them-or for that matter, if Beltran goes down again like last year and previously, it could be Chavez Andrson and Church. WOW!!! That is barely a ML outfield.

Their first baseman has been in decline for several years and was terrible last season. Their second baseman has leg issues and is also old. They lost considerable offense at catcher. None of their injury issues have been addressed. Now I hear they are going for Kenny Lofton, another 40+ player. Like jersey Gil says, they will be collecting Social Security and the Mets have ordered an extra shipment of rocking chairs for their locker room-even after losing Julio Franco and Glavine.

The Phillies are improved (though pitching is still highly suspect)-the addition of Feliz adds another 25 HR’s to their lineup and shores up their only problem position. The Braves have improved. The Mets, as currently set up, are a third place team. Santana is an excellent pitcher, but the deal is much like the Rangers getting ARod. It will not be enough.

As for the Braves-Javy will catch every fifth day. If I were the Braves, I would find a way to package and trade Thorman for some more pitching depth. I would keep Bryan Pena, who can play both corner infield positions, catch and play outfield. THAT is what really makes sense. Then Javy provides pop off the bench, as well. Alternatively I guess they could have Diaz catch in a pinch, though that does little to hearten me.

I am also greatly optimistic because of the reports I’ve heard of Blain Boyer’s return to pre injury form and possibly being better due to a training regimen for leg strength. The ball supposedly is exploding out of his hand now and he is already throwing in the 90’s. Let us not forget they had him starting in the minors last year, too. He will make the team (no options left) and give us yet another starting/relief option. I was very impressed with his pitching and mental makeup before the injury. I also met him and he’s a great kid. That will be our other pleasant surprise this year.

Well, Lew and I are on the same page I think as far as our assessments so far. Yes, it is possible for Boyer to better than what he showed in Richmond. We will have to see how he looks in spring training. He could be a good middle relief guy as he can usually go 3 innings before getting shelled.

Yes, keeping Pena and trading Thorman would make good sense but baseball people hate being wrong. Giving up on Thorman would mean that someone erred when they made him a number one pick. hey… I don’t make the rules, I’m just saying….. First and second round picks are given much more opportunity to fail than free agent signings.

If Gonzo is healthty , what i hear is coming good, we have a good pen also. The phillis is the team to beat, here they talking of Chase Utley turn for MVP…three in a roll…but the Howard situation can distract him and i don’t think they have deep in pitcher like the Braves, pen is shaky…and i don’t think that Rollin will have another good season.Like i said before and repeat…the first month of the season will be touch for the mets.

To throw in my two cents on the Phillies… They did make an upgrade at third. It think they are willing to accept the strikouts in exchange to the homerun production.

Yes, their pen looks weak but they subscribe to the bash brothers school of baseball. If they could find someone to play left field, they could really be a force. That said, they will win quite a few games this year. I don’t think anyone in the East will win a hundred games though.

Chris-Yes, the Feliz/Kingman comparison is somewhat accurate, but I think Feliz is better for average than Kong was. However, think where Feliz will be playing now- That joke of a Citizens Bank Park in Philly. Hell, I might hit ten or twelve out of there myself and I have an arthritic shoulder and am almost as old as Bob. Feliz will thrive. Besides, was Wes Helms a better option? I think Feliz is an upgrade.

Jersey Gil, you’re right, we do have pitching. However, it would not hurt to have a bit more in reserve. I’m concerned about Chuckie’s shoulder. I wouldn’t count on Gonzo, either. It will only be a year when he returns from his surgery. It may be longer before he is back to form.

Gil-Just saying what I would do, vis a vis Thorman. I’m not convinced that will happen, though.
