18: Yin, Yang, Jerry Falwell and The Spiders From Mars*

by Lew

RANDOLPH, VT – *The title alludes to an album by David Bowie, entitled “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars.” It tells the story of a fictional guitarist named Ziggy Stardust and his band The Spiders From Mars and their rise to stardom. It is a story detailing the detrimental effects of fame and fortune and what happens when one thinks they are greater than their bretheran. I know Savannah Guy and a few others may have understood the reference, but doubted that CL and Bob were listening to Glam Rock in the 70’s.

My little story also speaks to the duality of the universe and it’s often opposing forces. We all encounter this duality daily-Day and Night, Hot and Cold, Sunny or Rainy. Pitch and Hit. Home and Away. DH or no DH. You get the idea. The Yin and Yang of life-wonderful concept, that. We’ve all seen the collision of these forces-A pitching duel between Gibby and Koufax. A slugfest at Wrigley or at the Green Monster. Strikes when greedy players argue with greedy owners. We also see what transpires when hot and cold air masses collide-Thunderstorms which make Bob quit blogging and his computer to self destruct. Yes, much can happen when forces collide, but more on that later.

Much has been discussed on this blog about Heroes, Legends, Icons and Roll Models (don’t blame me for the spelling, I hang out with Beet Writers). With the recent steroid scandals, much has been discussed about their feet of clay (had to get at least one podiatric reference in, right?). We’ve also spoken much about our enjoyment of everything from baseball, to family and friends, to sci fi movies. I even talked about some of my favorites in my last blog.

My interest in all forms of science fiction and fantasy has by necessity, led me to attend Sci Fi conventions (Cons, as they are known). I’ve gotten some of my best art jobs at these events and made some pretty decent money along the way. I’ve made many friends there. I’ve also gotten the opportunity to meet many authors, artists and actors associated with the genre (note the alliteration, Oh Scribe). I’ve met R2D2 (Kenny Baker and his wife are nice people). I’ve met actors from Horror Films, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, and Star Trek. I’ve seen numerous fans dressed as Fairies, Witches, Wizards, Barbarians, Hobbits and Elves. I’ve seen others dressed as Romulans, Cardassians, Vulcans, Borg and Klingons. Many Klingons. Multitudes of Klingons. Hordes of Klingons. They are actually a common sight at these cons. But not in Lynchburg, Va. in 1993, at Kaliedoscope, the area’s first sci fi convention.

This was a good event, as these things go. I made several life long friends at this one. It was also significant for me because it was the first time I had been invited as a Guest Artist-a pretty big deal all those years ago. I also got to meet with one of my own icons (some may only have cowboys as heroes, but I prefer authors and artists), the author Roger Zelazy, for the final time before he died.. It was also my first time in Lynchburg, an old southern town which is also the home of the Late Evangelist Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University.

Now as discussed earlier, forces collide. Air masses meet and thunderstorms send Bob scurrying on Pruny Toes back to his hot tub. It seems that this particular September Sunday every year, was the annual brunch for the Reverend Falwell’s congregation-here in the very hotel where all these denizens of sci fi fandom frivolously frolicked and otherwise reveled. In the lobby (If I was a Prophet, I would Not have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, last night), a quartet of The Reverend’s choir gave a recital. The throng of Star Fleet Officers, Fairy Princesses, and Wizards listened intently. The singers were quite good and we are a cultured lot, after all, despite our various eccentricities. When they finished, we applauded heartily. The Reverend was not amused. Then the Klingons arrived.

Reverend Falwell stopped in mid sentence at the microphone. His eyes went wide and he turned ghostly white. He turned on heel and walked through the front door of the hotel, congregation trailing behind. They never returned, not even in subsequent years. Bob, though not even there, refused to leave his hot tub for a week. That is why Bob is wrinkled. He’s not really old, just Pruny.

Just a normal day in Dixie. Bob got old. Jerry met the Klingons. Cultures merged momentarily. I witnessed the Fall of Ziggy Stardust. Like I said, just an normal day.

Lew, excellent post. Yes, the Yin, the Yang is evident in everything. Sometimes more evident when the Klingons meet Jerry Falwell to be sure. Falwell must have thought he was being mocked. He should have stuck around, at least long enough to pass the plate. Do Klingons carry earth currency?

Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars was one of the most underrated albums of the 70’s. Solid, scorching rock. Keith Richards would (probably did) love those nasty…Nasty riffs. The most underrated album of all-time may be Changes, a…THE Bowie masterpiece. Every track a classic.

Mr. Fly, sleuth reporter had a run-in with Ziggy and his gang of spiders if you recall, during his Ken Burns interview session. He barely escaped.

Now, the $50 question: Lew, were you are Klingon, Star Fleet Officer or wizard?

SG-Actually, that reminds me. The world lost a great guitarist. Mick Ronson died of cancer several years ago. Never saw him with Bowie, but I did get to see him with Ian Hunter. Got to sing along on All The Young Dudes with the only 25 people left at the show that night. Great memory and the loss of a truly gifted guitarist. Damn those cellular mutations.

I have a new Beet WRiter story to SHare.

A very successful collumist sent his out-of-town Beet WRiter brother a beaUtiful talKing parrot for the beet writer’s birthday. This was a very special parrot that could speak 3 languages and perform circus feets. The collumist could not wait to heer back from his down-on-his-luck brother when he found what a Special parrot he had been given.

The collumist called the beet writer a FEw days later and Asked. “How did you like YOur Parrot?”

“It was delicious!”, replied the beet Writer.

“Delicious?”, shrieked the collumist, “Don’t tell me you cooked and ate a $2,500 parrot that speaks 3 languages! What were you thinking? How could you do that to him?”

“Well, said the beet writer, “He should have said something.”

Don’t this beet all? Now Sen. Arlen Specter is calling for a Congressional investigation of the Patriots for stealing business secrets by taping practices. Isn’t it about time that these Senatorial Morons got back to the business of dealing with the problems of the American populace? We can’t pass a flipping Economic Stimulus bill while people in this country starve and freeze to death, can’t afford to run their cars, feed their families, or pay the outrageous interest on the credit cards they desperately need because of the Non Inflation the Government tells us we don’t have, yet they can investigate professional sports for social molehills. Whatever. I’ve about had it with the whole damn bunch of And Idiots.

Some beet writers are critical of local airlines. And they should be CaReful. Here is anotHer beet writer story.

As a beet writer takes his seat on an airplane, he is surprised to find a parrot strapped in next to him. After taking off, the flight attendant comes around to serve the passengers on the plane. The beet writer asks the flight attendant for a coffee and the parrot squawks: “And get ME a coke… NOW!”

The flight attendant, flustered by the parrot’s attitude, brings back a coke for the parrot. However, she forgets the coffee for the beet writer.

As the beet writer points this out to the flight attendant, the parrot drains his glass and screams:

“Get me another coke or I’ll really create a scene!”

Quite upset, the attendant comes back shaking, with another coke, but still no coffee.

Irritated at her forgetfulness, the beet writer decides to try the parrot’s approach. “I’ve asked you twice for a coffee, woman. Go and get it right now, or I’ll create a scene that will make HIS look like a Victorian tea party!”

The next moment, both the beet writer and the parrot are grabbed and thrown out of the emergency exit by two burly, no-nonsense security guards.

Hurtling towards earth, the parrot turns to him and says: “You’re pretty cheeky for a guy who can’t fly!”

Super BowL day – more jokes coming.

An able-bodied seaman meets a pirate-turned-beet writer in a bar, and they take turns recounting their adventures. Noting the beet writer’s peg-leg, hook, and eye patch The seaman asks “So, how did you end up with the peg-leg?”

The beet writer replies “We was caught in a monster storm off the cape and a giant wave swept me overboard. Just as they were pullin’ me out a school of sharks appeared and one of ’em bit me leg off”.

“Blimey!” said the seaman. “What about the hook”?

“Ahhhh…”, mused the beet writer, “We was boardin’ a trader ship, pistols blastin’ and swords swingin’ this way and that. In the fracas me hand got chopped off.”

“Blimey!” remarked the seaman. “And how came ye by the eye patch?”

“A seagull droppin’ fell into me eye”, answered the beet writer.

“You lost your eye to a seagull dropping?” the sailor asked incredulously.

“Well…” said the beet writer; ” it was me first day with the hook.”

    and one more. . . πŸ˜†

A beet writer gets shipwrecked. When he wakes up, he’s on a beach. The sand is dark red. He can’t believe it. The sky is dark red. He walks around a bit and sees that there is dark red grass, dark red birds and dark red fruit on the dark red trees. He’s shocked when he finds that his skin is starting to turn dark red too.

“Oh no!!” says the beet writer, “I think I’ve been marooned!!”

Soon I hoPE to be a collumist.

The sun is shining, 70 degrees, the kids are coming over, wife’s in the kitchen stirrin’ the pots with my sister, cookin’ up some country ham and redeye gravy, stewed ‘maters, homemade biscuits and pinto beans. Strawberry shortcake dessert. Life is good.

Jersey, that Carne Mechada sounds great. I’ll have to give it a try sometime. We’ve gotten pretty good at making Carne Asada. We love Latin American and Mexican food around our house. Sometimes we have Spanish chorizo, thinly sliced with cheese platter and call it dinner. I’ll have a good Spanish wine with it, like Treana or a hearty cab. Mmmm…We also do ceviche, fried plantains, jerk beef, chicken, seafood, conch chowder… all of it.

Gil, I loved the new (and original) WOTW, but the new one wouldn’t be in my top ten either. That film is really best on the big screen or HD, with its fantastic effects. If you haven’t seen it, check out Blade Runner, a great Sci-Fi film noir. I’d hate to even try and determine my top ten. Dakota Fanning is an amazing little actress. Child prodigy. Good in β€œSigns” too. Oh, and Arlen Specter is and idiot. To throw a speculative grenade like that the day before the Super Bowl was, well, I won’t even get started on that.

Glad the Super Bowl is kicking off at 6:30. Early time is so much better than later. So many sports playoff or championship games go past midnight. I really wish MLB would follow suit and start games earlier. Who knows, might even get the kids watching again.

Some may remember Aunt Fanny’s Cabin … a few may even remember Aunt Fanny … if you ever ate there, at least back in the old days, you’ll remember the food as well as the atmosphere … it attracted folks from all over, from the rich and famous to beet righters … the food was good, especially the bread!

We always enjoyed it but Daddy thought it was too expensive and I thought Mama’s cookin’ was better, especially her fried chicken. Daddy used to tell the story of one beet righter he knew who really loved the place … going every time he got paid … about every six months … big, showy spender … but, though he always got good service, he never left a tip. It got so that no one wanted to serve him … and they complained to Harvey … who in turn asked how he liked the food and service.

“The food is fantastic, the service is the best … the only thing is the bread … I love but they skimp on the bread … only one piece!

Harvey explained the problem to everyone and the next time he was in, the beet righter received a triple portion of bread, together with even better service … spent over $100 but still no tip.

Again Harvey asked him about the food and service … and again “everything was great but they’re skimping on the bread … only three pieces … I love that bread!”

Harvey called everyone together and explained … told the chef that the next time he came in, to bake an especially large loaf, just for him … which they did … but it didn’t have the intended effect … still no tip!

In fact, Daddy said that was the last time the beet righter frequented Aunt Fanny’s … he was offended … he was a good customer and they knew how much he liked the bread … how dare they go back to giving him just one piece.

Enjoy the supper bowl … and a tip … don’t lose too much bread … you may need it for when you eat out.

It is something I have wanted to do for a long time. ‘Course one of my buddies in the home said giving me a law degree was like giving Jack the Ripper a new straight-razor. But, it gives me something to do, other than go to Afghanastan and dust poppies. BTW, I don’t blame you for becoming “williamwallace”. Braveheart in lowercase is lame. Take care.

I enjoyed the first half, third quarter too … you would have too … if you had the under!

I never knew that coaches could challenge when referees fail to call penalties … goodness! You can watch it … I’ve seen enough.

Unfortunately, tain’t ever over ’til it’s over … I might just cash in … half a loaf is sometimes better than one; it all depends on how you slice it … which some folks find it easier than peeling the onion.

I know they were trying real hard to impress but those kids doing the halftime show sure could have used some help getting dressed.

Come October, y’all just remember what the Babe said about the Metropolitans gettin’ Santana … β€œYou may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime.”

MyLady, would you please change my 6:07 so that it’s credited to MrGil ‘stead of me … the thought that I might be responsible for contributing to his delinquencies might be more than I could bear.

Hillbilly, I’m with you. I’m not really a football fan, and certainly not a fan of either team, but I did want to see a good game. It was good, no actually it was great, until the very end.

I mentioned in a previous blog lead that I’m not really a fan of the game any more. In past years, I’ve watched it with one eye while the other eye worked on something more interesting. This year, for the first time, both of our children asked to stay up to see the game. I was reluctant to allow it as we like to have them in bed by 9pm at the absolute latest. However, because of the occasion, I relented. We had a great time together and I am very happy that I allowed them to stay up so late. I’ll catch heck from karenklob tomorrow but I’ll just deal with it then.

Today was a great day today. Matt and I went out to the ball field and did baseball drills for about two hours. It won’t be long until he can throw harder than me. It was absolutely beautiful. Father and son, alone, bonding, talking trash, playing ball. The weather was awesome too.

Paladin, it’s very nice to see you here. Are you going for your JD for any particular reason? You gonna rent out the back cover of the phone book or are you gonna set up a legit practice? Enquiring minds want to know!

The next morning the Indian returns. He has his shotgun in one hand, pulling another male buffalo with the other. He walks up to the counter and says to the waiter: “Want coffee.”

The waiter says “Whoa, Tonto! We’re still cleaning up your mess from yesterday.”What was all that about, anyway?”

Good morning all, Another day closer to baseball season so it is a good day.

Lots of polls on football greatest upsets show people have short memories. I still think the Jets upset of the Colts has to be number one, really…. There just was no comparison between the two leagues then. There have been games that made me personally upset….. The Raiders’ blow out of the Redskins comes to mind.

Grinch, my dad taught me never to bet my fortunes on other people’s abilities. I would rather lose it fair and square to the black jack dealers…. I still wonder how I always draw a ten when I am sitting on 12 and the dealer can draw 7 cards to make 21…. Must be magic….

My wife and I are taking two of the grand daughters to the hockey game Wednesday night. Richmond had a good crowd Saturday with 6500 folks in attendance. Isn’t it amazing what a 12 game winning streak will do to boost the gate. Too bad the wife has never been exposed to hockey before this year. She had no idea that there was a game for slow white guys…..

I still love the game but could never have played it myself. Just never could skate…. My kids had no problem what so ever. Guess they got that from their mom.

Okay, have a good day folks. Catch up with everyone later…

    Good morning everybody…

I am still recovering from my weekend snow-tubing trip to Winterplace Ski Resort in Ghent, West Virginia. The lovely Mrs. Raisins and I left Jefferson, GA on a bus with 20 middle and high schoolers and 5 adults Friday afternoon about 4:30pm in route to our overnight stop in Marion, Va. We arrived about 11:00pm at a church facility complete with a small dorm attached to a large gymnasium. After disembarking and stowing gear, a couple of the other adult men and I schooled the high school boys on the basketball court. (I may not have any “ups” anymore, but I can still clear out under the basket with the best of them. I inflicted more bruises than I received. πŸ˜€ ) Anyway, I accessed a deeper portion of my lungs than had been tapped in many years. I’m still coughing… We ended our game at 1:00am since we had to be packed and on the bus to leave at 7:00am for the remaining 1 1/2 hours to Winterplace. BTW – the youngsters stuck this old man with a TOP bunk. Nice, huh? We arrived for our 4 hours of snow-tubing by 9:00am, and by 1:30pm, we were back on the bus for the 8 hour trip back home.

I arrived back home with little sleep, a deep cough and a whole lot of sore muscles. And for the icing on the cake, by Sunday afternoon, I had a full case of Montezuma’s revenge.

I say all that to say this, man I had a great weekend !

It’s good to back in this Brave new world.

Don’t want to bore others on here particularly BobJ, who apparently has had bad experiences with lawyers. I come from a line of lawyers including my brother who recently retired after 50 years of distinguished practice. And our great-grandfather, Thomas Reades Rootes Cobb codified the laws of Georgia and had a brilliant career ahead of him when he was killed at Fredericksburg. He was a Brigadier General in Longstreet’s Corps. ‘Nuff about all of this. Got to get to my studies.

    Braves may not keep Teixeira
    Posted: Sunday February 03, 2008 08:38AM ET
The Braves aren’t encouraged about signing Mark Teixeira to a contract that will keep him off the free-agent market. He would be awfully attractive to several teams, including the Yankees and Orioles, who view him as a hometown hero. He agreed to a one-year, $12.5 million deal for 2008 but could be seeking one of those supersized, $20 million-a-year deals when agent Scott Boras shops him as a free agent.

Agree with you both. The choices to vote for are not really choices. It’s a matter of who can do the least damage. Hopefully.

Remember small ‘starter homes’? I see young families now buying $450,000 houses for their first homes. 2 SUVs, a couple of small children. How do they think they are going to pay for it? Taxes. And homeowner’s insurance in this county is astronomical. Gil, you summed it up with that commercial tag: β€œI want all and I want it now Generation”. They are no different that 4 yr-olds in that respect.

I wish Tex would surprise us all and stay in ATL instead of chasing more millions.

Well, I usually don’t agree much with what Mark Bowman has to say, but I think he’s right in this instance. The Braves will sign Teixeira. For crying out loud-the guy’s building a home in Atlanta. As for Baltimore-that is widely considered to be a radically dysfunctional franchise. Javy will set Tex straight about Angelos, who is at the moment, doing everything possible to screw up the Bedard deal his newly appointed GM worked out. The man may have made a bundle of bucks, but is still And Idiot. Tex will stay with the Braves.

If only I were so certain that the And Idiots running for the Republican nomination for President would finally realize that Ronald Reagan is dead, has not been President for two decades and operated under radically different circumstances than they will have to. They need to learn the difference between apples and oranges. OH!!The Humanity. Then the Democrats need to learn that just saying you have experience does not make it a fact.

Ron Reagan had to face double digit inflation and interest rates approaching 20%. I have often wondered what Jimmy Carter might have accomplished if the Prime Rate had been 4.25% like with W. Bush. Radical tax cuts are one thing under those circumstances-giving the top 5% of income earners an additional break under the current situation, with a Billion $ per week war being waged, is completely moronic.

Braveheart, congrats on the Super Bowl win. The Manning to Tyree, uh…pass. Implausable. Incredible. Not pretty, not a Hail Mary and certainly not immaculate, but it did the trick. Seemed throughout the game that destiny was playing a role in. That and a fierce Giants defense that was unstoppable.

Then…THE PLAY. It was inconceivable that Manning broke out of such a sure game-ending sack and wove, stumbled, fell forward through the tangled logjam, broke so many tackles and got the pass off.

Then, Tyree with his one hand grab and helmet trap then two hands choking the ball and hanging on for dear life to complete the first down catch. It was not immaculate. It was the β€œIncredible Reception”.

As much as I wanted the Patriots to win last night to make NFL history as an undefeated team and as shocking and bizarre as some plays were and as stunning as the outcome was, I’m happy to hear that you and your dad loved it.

As long as the mom’s and pop’s are happy, all is well and good in the world. My very last visit with my dad was in 1978 while we were watching a Super Bowl together. He passed a few days after that. Cowboys beat the Broncos 27-10.

Funny, I just had to look up the score since it’s been so long, but I’ll never forget our good conversation, good time and bonding together that special Sunday so long ago. We were pulling for the Cowboys that year. There’s not a single play I can recall from that game but I’ll always remember my dad when the Super Bowl comes around.

Now…the Giants deserve their confetti parade and I’m ready for some baseball.

    GO BRAVES!!!

Thanks, Savannah. I used to really hate the Manning brothers. Hated them with a passion. I think it had to do with graduating from Bama but also with the whole golden boy thing and having them shoved down our throats. But over the last few years, Peyton has really grown on me – partly due to the commercials but also because I usually am in awe of the control and mastery Peyton has as a QB. I swear sometimes he throws interceptions and he must go to the sideleines and say that interception never should have happened because that defensive back was out of position. I think Peyton knows the plays of the defense better than the defenders do – without the aid of tapes like the Patriots have. BTW, I don’t care all that much if they were recording the other sidelines during games but if they recorded that Rams practice, that is disgusting, and Belichick should be banned from the NFL for life for that.

I have been real slow to like Eli. But I started to like him more when I saw the abuse Tiki was throwing at him. I hate when vets and stars who are not anywhere near as good as they think they are, start picking on struggling young players. There is nothing worse than that to me. It always makes me hate the star and root for the struggling youngster.

I don’t think the Giants win the Super Bowl if Tiki and Shockey were playing. I think Eli finally had the freedom to stop worrying about those two egomaniacs demanding the ball at all times and putting him down and he could just fling it to whoever was open, whether that was Plax, Tyree, Smith, Boss – whomever was open dependent upon what the defensive coverage dictated instead of just looking for two crybabies who kept demanding the ball.

Tiki is probably the best running back in Giants history but his legacy will forever be tarnished because he proved it was all about him and never the team. Good luck with the Today Show Tiki.

I’m not one who loves nasty taunts but there is one thing I would love to hear Eli Manning say this week:

“Tell Tiki I got a ring.”

But Eli is too classy for that.

    Lew,
I really hope you are right, and Tex signs a nice long contract(What will Boras ask for, 7-8 years?) because our lineup will have a monstrous hole without him in 2009.
I think that there really is no way to know at this point in time. I posted this link for his house for sale in Texas a few weeks back. A house that was built in 2005….
    http://realestalker.blogspot.com/2008/01/mark-teixeira.html

Needless to say, so much depends on what the braves do this year. Unless every starter’s rotator cuff tears in half in April(God forbid!) we will compete for the division or the wildcard. But, if we got in the first round and did a 3 and out, would the bitter taste make it easier for him to leave??? Would missing the playoffs by a game (or going to game 7 in the NLCS)make him want to stay to finish the job?
Would winning it all make it impossible for him to leave???
More importantly, IMO, is money. What would the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, or O’s offer him??? If the Braves offered 20 mil a season for 7 years right now, would he sign??? Remember everyone, that Andruw is getting 18 Million a year for the next 2 years, and he hit .222 last year!!! 20 million would be a bargain.
What if the Yankees offered 25-26 million a year??? You know A-Rod territory? Could we(Should we?) counter with 22, 23 million??? If you go that high, what is another Million or so????
About the only thing we do know this year is if Tex is healthy, he will have a monster year, and drive in 130+ RBI’s……

Darn, Jerseygil really does know his Braves. Quick with that answer. I actually didn’t know it. Had to get the question and answer off a Braves trivia web page. I cheated.

Julio can’t be a Braves coach. He’s too fit. Julio needs a gut and a double chin to be a Braves coach.

There is little that Julio could not teach a young player. Julio could do it all. Was a good middle infielder long before he became a first baseman, a good hitter, a good basestealer when young, hit for contact, won a batting title, a 3 time All Star, hit for modest power, got clutch hits, could pinch hit, could platoon, valued physical fitness and dedication to the game, was willing to persevere despite disappearing from the game for many years before resurfacing in 2001. Think about the things he could teach a youngster about the peaks and valleys of the game and how to play and prepare to play.

But, first, he needs to get a gut and a double chin.

SANTIAGO, Dominican Republic — Tampa Bay Rays infielder Willy Aybar is in custody in his native Dominican Republic for domestic violence charges, according to a local prosecutor.

Aybar, 24, has been held without bail since Thursday for allegedly assaulting his wife in BanΓ, about 25 miles south of Santo Domingo.

“Aybar is in jail since last week, and he could spend at least three more months in jail if he is convicted of domestic violence,” said Jesus Fernandez Velez, the appeals court prosecutor in charge.

The Rays acquired Aybar and Chase Fontaine when they sent left-hander Jeff Ridgway to the Atlanta Braves in mid-January. Aybar missed the 2007 season with a wrist injury.

Aybar has a .292 career average with five home runs and 40 RBIs in 105 games.

They know me, have done my taxes for five years and this is the best way to go. Uncle W is not middle class friendly. You don’t even want to know how much we pay in taxes. Jersey Gil-I don’t rent the house. My son and daughter in law live there so I don’t have to rent to someone I don’t know. I have already more than doubled my money on the place in ten years, even figuring that property values have declined somewhat. It’s nothing but a savings account for me. When we retire I will sell it and pocket the bucks. In the meantime my kids can live and put away money for their own place.

    As for the lineup:
    1Yunel
    2.Kelly Johnson
    3.Chipper
    4.Tex
    5.McCann/Frenchy
    6.Frenchy/Javy (every fifth day)
    7.Ciaz/Brandon Jones
    8.Kotsay

That’s how I would start out and tweak it if necessary. If Kotsay is back and hitting good, I might switch him and let Kelly bat 7th and bat Diaz?Brandon 8th.

Bob…. A friend once shared this with me and I am going to pass it along to others on the Braves & Stuff blog. It has served me well over the years as I have been able to put every single person I have ever worked for or with or for me into one of the following categories.

    Dick’s 4 levels of “stupidability”

    1. The aggressive intelligent… These are exactly the kind of folks you want to have working for you. No problem is too tough for them. They attack every task with vigor and because the are intelligent, they never cause a problem because they alway do the right thing.

    2. The lazy intelligent… These folks are also intelligent but unfortunately lazy. Again, these people seldom create a problem because when prodded they too are productive because they always Know how to do the right thing.

    3. The lazy stupid… Now these folks have the potential to screw things up but because they are lazy, they rarely cause problems because because even though they do not know what to do, they seldom make the problem worse because of their inaction.

    4. The stupid aggressive… These folks should be avoided like the plague. These are the folks that create 90% of all the problems you might encounter because even though they have no clue as to solve a problem, they fling themselves headlong into the fray and really make a royal mess of every situation.

I bet everyone reading this can think of someone and put them into one of these four categories. πŸ™‚

I love it when folks might actually have to wait until the conventions to select a candidate.

On a more serene plane… Baseball news is still sparse. I guess the beet writers are still trying to overcome the hangovers of the Superbowl. It is funny how so many have anointed the Mets as the “Dream Team”. Does anyone remember the same hoopla that bestowed the same upon the Braves last year when they traded for Tex?

On the other side, let all those nasty Mets fans get their hearts broken again when the Amazin’s don’t live up to their expectations! It’s almost as gratifying as seeing the Bravos win!

The polling place where I voted early this morning is a fire station which had been effectively abandoned to make way for the election process. As I was standing in line, I wondered to myself what would happen if there were a fire nearby. Suddenly, we all heard the sound of squealing tires and crumpling metal from an auto accident right in front of the fire station. Where were the first responders? As I left about 10 minutes later, there were still no first responders on sight, directly in front of a fire station. Fortunately, there did not appear to be any injuries involved, aside from the psyche of the teenager being verbally berated by the lady from the car whom she rear-ended. It was all a bit surreal… πŸ˜•

My references to “truth” in Washington, are probably more illusion than allusion … excepting George of course … he was full of it, truth that is.

I think he once said that the State of Delaware was so small that he could throw a silver dollar across it … today’s disrespectful youngsters would call him a liar and I’ll admit that it may have been a slight exaggeration … but, I wouldn’t be too sure … they just don’t realize how much further a dollar went back then.

Bowman’s projected batting order has Yunel leading off and Kotsay hitting second with Matt and Kelly hitting seventh and eighth … I don’t buy it but my biggest concern is with TP and those responsible for pregame preparation … wish we had Greg Maddux for that.

    The Cat from Heaven

A pastor had a kitten that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The pastor coaxed, offered warm milk, etc. The kitty would not come down.

The tree was not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitten. He did all this, checking his progress in the car frequently, then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent sufficiently for him to reach the kitten. But as he moved a little further forward… the rope broke.

The tree went “boing!” and the kitten instantly sailed through the air – out of sight. The pastor felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they’d seen a little kitten. Nobody had seen a stray kitten.

So, he prayed, “Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping,” and went on about his business.

A few days later he was at the grocery store, and met one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. Now this woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, “Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?”

She replied, “You won’t believe this,” and told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child had begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, “Well, if God gives you a cat, I’ll let you keep it.”

She told the pastor, “I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. And really, Pastor, you won’t believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. A kitten suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws spread out, and landed right in front of her.”

A deputy police officer responded to a report of a barroom disturbance. The “disturbance” turned out to be well over six feet tall and weighed almost 300 pounds. What’s more, he boasted that he could whip the deputy and Muhammad Ali too.

Said the policeman; “I’ll bet that you’re also an escape artist-probably better than Houdini.”

    The giant nodded.

“If I had some chains,” the deputy continued, “you could show us how strong you really are. But all I’ve got is a set of handcuffs. Why don’t you see just how quickly you can break out of them?”

Once in the cuffs, the man puffed, pulled and jerked for four minutes. “I can’t get out of these,” the giant growled.

“Are you sure?” the deputy asked.

The fellow tried again. “Nope,” he replied. “I can’t do it.”

“In that case,” said the deputy, “you’re under arrest.”

    Against righties:
    1. KJ (L)
    2. Yunel (R)
    3. Hoss (S)
    4. Tex (S)
    5. Mac (L)*
    6. Frenchman (R)
    7. Kotsay (L)
    8. Diaz (R) – BJones (L) gets an occasional start, but not a strict platoon.

    Against lefties:
    1. Yunel (R)
    2. KJ (L)
    3. Hoss (S)
    4. Tex (S)
    5. Frenchman (R)
    6. Mac (L)*
    7. Diaz (R)
    8. Kotsay (L)

    * Note: On the “fifth day” that the backup catcher, whomever that will be, catches, Frenchy stays at 5 regardless of pitcher, with catcher batting 6. However, should BPena win the backup job, you could bat him 5th and have 3 switch-hitters in a row… interesting…

One thing is certain-No matter what else happens, we can not continue to spend a Billion dollars a week (for any more time, much less another 100 years) for the biggest life taking joke in recent memory. I guess that narrows it down somewhat, but what are we left with? Not much. Maybe the money could be used to put people to work building a wall around the country and arming our border patrol to keep the loonies out-starting with our own congress.

As much as I would like to debate the merits of taking the fight to foreign soil to keep it off our own, I’ll stick to the merits of one consistent leadoff hitter as opposed to a R/L arrangement…

I certainly understand the reasoning behind one leadoff guy. Also, I think KJ was a solid hitter in that spot for the majority of the season. An argument could be made that he’ll only improve in his 2nd full season. My order was more for trying to keep too many hitters from the same side of the plate in a row, so as to prevent the opposing manager from making easy situational pitching changes later in the game.

    4. Tex
    5. Mac
    6. Escobar
    7, Diaz/Jones
    8. Kotsay

If we are ever going to launch Frenchy, put him in the 2 hole like what was done with Andruw in 2000, and Frenchy will explode because pitchers will actually have to pitch to him because they are afraid that KJ is already on base and Chipper, Tex, and McCann are coming up next. And I think there will not be much dropoff at all in the 6 hole with Escobar. I think YUnel hitting sixth could knock in a similar number of runs as Frenchy.

Frenchy would hit .320 and have a SLG over .500 if he hit second behind KJ and in front of Chipper, Tex, and McCann.

Brandon is an all around hitter with a great eye and good power. Brandon Jones has the ability to be a decent player. Anderson will never be more than a scrubby fifth outfielder who can run. Anderson is nothing more than an outfield version of Pete Orr. Anderson is not even as good as Ryan Langerhans.

I think in the next 3 years Brandon Jones can put up numbers similar to what KJ did last season but with 20-25 homers.

Braveheart-Ah Yes-The constant droning of Law Students about the cost of Law School. Yet, it is a statistical fact, that as soon as the economy goes into somewhat of a downturn, the applications for Law School increase to the point of insanity. The rude awakening when they finally realize that most of the jobs they are going to qualify for are not going to be sufficient to even pay off their significant debt is quite enlightening.

Perhaps a bit of research prior to the application process and a bit less of chasing the greed demon, might be a good idea. After all, are not these paragons of our educational system supposed to be the intellectually elite? One must, at times wonder then, why none of them bothered to check the situation current in the industry.

Would it surprise you to know that that very topic is continually discussed by the Law School administrators and that they actually lobby for sane lending and borrowing practices? Too bad that the banks and applicants seem to have one track minds that invariably tend towards the end result of impoverished students. Just be glad you’re not into Environmental Law, where it is extremely unlikely you will find one of those cushy high paying entry level positions.

Can’t someone who was not in the service be C in C? I’d say McCain is probably best qualified if he were running for war hero (he may have mentioned that a time or two), but not as leader of our nation. We will have very good generals and cabinet to run the war, fight terror and such.

You guys need to lighten up on this “radical Christian” thing. I am also a Christian but I do not try to force-feed my beliefs and ideals to others and consider them “sinners” if they do not share my particular beliefs. That, IMO, is the definition of radicalism, be it Christian or Muslim. Selah.

CL, you have not heard me defending McCain , but…I will vote for him, Holdin’ my nose of course! He is Pro-life, name a Dem that is these days. (Of course, I was more than willing to vote for the pro-choice Guiliani) He was right about needing a surge(I recall Hillary saying something along those lines, which cracks me up, one thing she was right about, but she can’t talk about it! πŸ˜† )
as well. His plan is to do more than cut, then run. No matter how you feel about us being over there, we are there now. And we cannot leave as fast as humanly possible, just to do it.

On the Dem side, cannot stand, trust Hillary. Obama is the most liberal Senator out of 100….too bad, I really don’t mind him at all. Too bad he isn’t more like the guy he emulates, the tax cutting, commie hatin’ hawk, JFK!!!!!

Well, here I am in the position a Marine loves. I’m surrounded so I can attack in all directions. But, time will not permit.

SG; you make some good points and there are things about Mccain that I do not like, but I “dislike” him less than others. And about the C-in-C thing: McCain was not only a war hero; he Commanded the largest squadron in the Navy. I would be just as uncomfortable with Huckabee in the oval office as I would be with McCain in the pulpit.

I’m not retreating, I’m making a strategic withdrawal. I’ve got work to do.

Huckabee is not a “radical”. He was a preacher. He is a social conservative. He’s an amnesty, tax, welfare, national security and economic liberal who is currently sucking up to McCain and running for VP. All of the strategy shows that our elections can be hijacked by the timing and the process. Turns into a power grabbing chess game instead of who the people would prefer. But then, what the hell do most voters know anyway. Test them (well, there he goes again).

VOR, no worry…Paladin doesn’t fight at the drop of a hat. Unless the hat belongs to Odd-Job and it lands on his toe. Even then, he’d probably give him the gold finger first.

Now…no more controversy and back to baseball. Who did Clemens vote for today (kidding…just kidding).

The endorsement being given to Obama by the Hollywood types and the elite of the Dem party tell me that the Dems and far-left liberals are tired of the Clinton circus and are pushing their new champion as hard as they can. If the only good thing to come of all this is the end of the Clinton’s running for anything, it will be a good thing.

Given an Obama vs McCain contest, I think McCain will win. Too many people are distrustful of Obama, don’t like his extreme-left tilt and will vote for McCain against Obama.

Berigan, the two reason you cited for voting your preference (McCain) are not at all different than the other R candidates, except for Rudy. If you are looking for differentiation, keep looking. If I can’t change your mind on that and you haven’t voted yet, how about doing a little baseball research before you go to the polls. How about, which players between 1900 and 2007 came up to bat more than 20 times, threw left, batted right and had curly hair.

Sorry, paladin, didn’t mean to touch a nerve… I suppose that I would like to consider myself a radical Christian if it means sharing my faith with others. Most self proclaimed Christians do not try to “force-feed” anything to anyone. In fact, most are too afraid to say anything, usually out of fear of being labeled as some “Jesus freak” or something. It’s the maniacs who garner the attention and make a bad name for the rest of us.

I don’t consider anyone a sinner if they don’t share my belief. I consider myself a sinner who is redeemed by Christ. I also don’t hold it against anyone if they are not receptive to what I believe. Just don’t hold it against me if I pray for you. One of my best friends is a non-Christian, but we co-exist quite easily.

Just for background information, I play in Christian rock band (Rock of Christ Band… google it…) and find myself often the target of “Christians” who judge what I do as wrong. So, I understand what some so-called Christians can portray. We’re not all like that, though.

    No disrespect intended to anyone…

Romney looks Presidential, but I would be very concerned what his point of view on anything will be from day to day. Talk about a Waffle Supreme. Huddle House should name theirs after him. No more Republicans. We can’t afford another Republican administration. It will take more than four years to reverse the damage W has done to this country-politically and economically. What is this silly concern over who is the conservative and who is the liberal? Why would anyone want to be considered a member of either lunatic fringe element of the political equation?

Most people are centrists like every single remaining candidate. McCain, Romney, Obama, Huckabee, and Clinton are all centrists who lean slighlty to one side or the other and pay lip service to the concerns of the lunatic fringe element that is the ‘conservative’ and the ‘liberal’. They pay lip service to the lunatic conservative or the lunatic liberal because those are the wackos most likely to vote and fund your campaign and spread the word and you have to trick them into getting your back.

The majority of Americans are too smart to let themselves drift into either lunatic fringe element and just want someone with some darn common sense. But we will continue to hear these silly boys and girls fight over who is the most conservative moron or the most liberal moron, who is the most like Reagan or Kennedy even though neither Kennedy nor Reagan were like Kennedy and Reagan. We will praise the one who is best at pretending to be a member of the lunatic fringe element they and most Americans don’t really want to belong to. The more enlightened of us in the middle will chuckle at the games that are played with the lunatic fringe conservative and liberal. We will not vote for the one who we believe leans out too far in either direction. The White House is not a place for simple minded idealists, whether they be a conservative or a liberal.

As the last 8 years have taught us , what you have to concern yourself with is the nut who pretends to be a centrist. When W said he was a compassionate conservative, we should have all run scared. When everyone else tries real hard to pretend they are at the extremes of the political equation to trick the lunatic fringe, W was pretending to be in the middle. Frightening. We all should have known right then he was such a lunatic that even the lunatics didn’t need to be fooled by him. The lunatics told him stop preaching to the choir, go fool the unsuspecting idiots in the middle.

Well WW…may seem silly to some but Super Tuesday and caring about who leads the Country has a lot more relevance than any Super Bowl or World Series. Not as much fun to watch to be sure, but more important. To some anyway.

There are such vast differences between conservatives and liberals. Basically, if one believes the government can and should make all decisions for us because we are too stupid or lazy to make laws and run our states and spend our own money however we want and on whatever we want, vote Dem. If you believe that we all have the right and responsibility to manage our own lives and keep the money that we work our butts off for, vote Repub.

If one believes we should be free to kill unborn children but not attack, kill or even incarcerate or a known terrorist, vote Dem. If one wants to ignore terror hotspots throughout the world while they grow, plan and plot great harm against us, vote Dem. If one wants to allow gay marriage and perpetuate the welfare state, vote Dem. And on and on. It’s not just about political party…it’s about values. It’s about socialism or capitalism. The differences are clear.

While we may have totally different viewpoints (as most do on this blog and everywhere else), we can surely agree that the less politicos actually do in Washington the better off we generally are.

Enough about that. Sorry I’ve gotten so political today. In the grand scheme of things, it’s just a passionate vent. Some of my oldest, dearest friends are liberal. Other than an occasional elbow, we get along just fine.

    That’s all.

And I think some old style Dems don’t realize how very far left the party moved on them. I have several friends that hate Bush, the war in Iraq….but, get them on the subject on Illegals, and all of the sudden, we agree!!! Not saying folks like Hillary and Obama care, but my Democratic friends do. Talk about crime in general. Funny, they are incensed about judges giving child molesters a 2 year sentence as well. I would bet we would find a fair bit of common ground with Lew.

when you get a group as diverse as this talking about subjects as polarizing as those two, there’s bound to be issues” … probably will but ain’t bound to be … not if we maintain the intended spirit of this Blog … regardless of our beliefs, be they political or religious.

Most everybody knows that Polonius said “Cogito, ergo sum” … well, something close … to thine own self be true. If I may pollute both Willie and RenΓ© … if you are not striving to be that which you think and/or believe you should … then you’re not thinking … and if you aren’t thinking you are not.

Christianity means different things to different folks but if all those claiming to be Christians truly believed in the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth as we know them and strove above all else to follow those teachings … it would be a far different world.

Forgetting religion, if you are not striving to be that which you think and/or believe you should … give it a try.

The last time I looked the federal and all 50 state constitutions still paid homage to God … don’t see why we can’t as well … and while separation of Church and State considerations are important, I think there’s everything right and nothing wrong with actively supporting those with fundamental values in which you believe and actively rejecting those without those values. When voting for someone who is going to be faced with making hard decisions … methinks it would be nice to know that their basic value system at least included a nodding acquaintance with honor, integrity, and God.

I hope you voted if you were wise and voted for Jimmy Smith … the intelligent ticket … otherwise, I hope you didn’t … we need a light turnout!

Now you just gotta love this:

“A child was told to write a book report on the entire Bible:

In the beginning, which occurred near the start, there was nothing but God, darkness, and some gas. The Bible says, The Lord thy God is one, but I think He must be a lot older than that.Anyway, God said, ‘Give me a light!’ and someone did. Then God made the world. He split the Adam and made Eve. Adam and Eve were naked, but they weren’t embarrassed because mirrors hadn’t been invented yet. Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating one bad apple, so they were driven from the Garden of Eden. Not sure what they were driven in though, because they didn’t have cars.

Adam and Eve had a son, Cain, who hated his brother as long as he was Abel. Pretty soon all of the early people died off, except for Methuselah, who lived to be like a million or something.

One of the next important people was Noah, who was a good guy, but one of his kids was kind of a Ham. Noah built a large boat and put his family and some animals on it. He asked some other people to join him, but they said they would have to take a rain check.

After Noah came Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jacob was more famous than his brother, Esau, because Esau sold Jacob his birthmark in exchange for some pot roast. Jacob had a son named Joseph who wore a really loud sports coat.

Another important Bible guy is Moses, whose real name was Charlton Heston. Moses led the Israel Lights out of Egypt and awa y from the evil Pharaoh after God sent ten plagues on Pharaoh’s people. These plagues included frogs, mice, lice, bowels, and no cable. God fed the Israel Lights every day with manicotti.

Then he gave them His Top Ten Commandments. These include don’t lie, cheat, smoke, dance, or covet your neighbor’s stuff. Oh, yeah, I just thought of one more: Humor thy father and thy mother.

One of Moses’ best helpers was Joshua who was the first Bible guy to use spies. Joshua fought the battle of Geritol and the fence fell over on the town.

After Joshua came David. He got to be king by killing a giant with a slingshot. He had a son named Solomon who had about 300 wives and 500 porcupines. My teacher says he was wise, but that doesn’t sound very wise to me.

After Solomon there were a bunch of major league prophets. One of these was Jonah, who was swallowed by a big whale and then barfed upon the shore. There were also some m inor league prophets, but I guess we don’t have to worry about them.

After the Old Testament came the New Testament. Jesus is the star of the New Testament. He was born in Bethlehem in a barn. (I wish I had been born in a barn, too, because my mom is always saying to me, ‘Close the door! Were you born in a barn?’ ) It would be nice to say, ‘As a matter of fact, I was.’

During His life, Jesus had many arguments with sinners like the Pharisees and the Republicans. Jesus also had twelve opossums. The worst one was Judas Asparagus. Judas was so evil that they named a terrible vegetable after him.

Jesus was a great man. He healed many leopards and even preached to some Germans on the Mount. But the Republicans and all those guys put Jesus on trial before Pontius the Pilot. Pilot didn’t stick up for Jesus. He just washed his hands instead.

Any way’s, Jesus died for our sins, then came back to life again. He went up to Heaven but will be back at the end of the Aluminum. His return is foretold in the book of Revolution.”

Berigan, me and cuz WW have absolutely no problems and have a great deal of respect for each other, even if we have completely differing opinions on politics. I’m just sittin’ here at Klobbers Saloon, drinkin’ politico wine with friends that drop in wanting to talk about the stuff. Trouble is, just when one leaves and we’ve said our piece and toasted each other, another denizen pal walks in and pours me another. They leave and here comes another. I’m getting tipsy on politco wine.

I wish, to some extent at least, the two parties could put partisan politics aside, and do what was best for the country….but , that ain’t gonna happen, is it????

Berigan, now close the blinds and sit down. It is the international system of currency which determines the vitality of life on this planet. THAT is the natural order of things today. THAT is the atomic and subatomic and galactic structure of things today. And YOU have meddled with the primal forces of nature. And YOU WILL ATONE. Am I getting through to you, Mr. Berigan? You get up on your little 21-inch screen and howl about America, and democracy. There is no America; there is no democracy. There is only IBM, and ITT, and AT&T, and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today.

You have meddled with the primal forces of nature, Mr. Berigan, and I won’t have it. Is that clear? You think you’ve merely stopped a business deal? That is not the case. The Arabs have taken billions of dollars out of this country, and now they must put it back. It is ebb and flow, tidal gravity. It is ecological balance. You are a man who thinks in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations; there are no peoples. There are no Russians. There are no Arabs. There are no third worlds. There is no West. There is only one holistic system of systems; one vast, interwoven, interacting, multivaried, multinational dominion of dollars.

The world is a business, Mr. Berigan; it has been since man crawled out of the slime. Our children will live, Mr. Berigan, to see that perfect world in which there’s no war or famine, oppression or brutality – one vast and ecumenical holding company, for whom all men will work to serve a common profit, in which all men will hold a share of stock – all necessities provided, all anxieties tranquilized, all boredom amused. And I have chosen you, Mr. Berigan, to preach this evangel.

    You ask, Why me?

Because you’re on a blog, dummy. Sixty million people read you every night of the week, Monday through Sunday.

You’ve got to say, ‘I’m a HUMAN BEING, Dammit! My life has VALUE!’ So I want you to get up now. I want all of you to get up out of your chair. I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell, β€œI’M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!” Things have got to change. But first, you’ve gotta get mad! You’ve got to say, ‘I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore!’ Then we’ll figure out what to do about the depression and the inflation and the oil crisis. But first get up out of your chair, open the window, stick your head out, and yell…

Oh, and do your best Peter Finch voice while screaming out the window.

(do I need to give film credits for the dialogue?)

It would be nice if the lunatic fringe would just shut up long enough for people too use their brains long enough to look beyond the sound bites. Of course, people will vote their wallets or what they think will benefit them but alas, more government will mean less money for everyone.

What it really comes down to is there is enough money, it just depends on what you want to spend it on.

SG… Spot on that observation of Globalization… I saw it coming long before it was an issue. People were promised low prices, what they didn’t see coming was they would have no jobs and therefore no matter what the price, they could not afford it.

Thoughts and prayers to all those who have suffered from these storms.

And as an ironic FYI, today was to have been the statewide tornado drill in Georgia as part of Severe Awareness Week. For obvious reasons, the drill has been moved to Friday. I just hope I don’t hear sirens going off today, for it that be the case, it won’t be a drill.

Wow- 45 dead. Those storms were as bad as any I’ve ever heard of. Glad Bob is safe and the hot tub still functional. Makes the foot of snow we’re expecting today seem rather insignificant by comparison. At least Kathy decided it was the better part of wisdom to come back home after getting no more than a half mile away-She said cars were sliding down the hilll abovew our house. At least the house is not likely to blow away.

On a more pleasant front-Sherlock Holmes was being discussed recently. I’ve read most of Conan Doyle’s stories, though not quite all (it’s on the list of things to do). However, I would like to give a plug for a couple of contemporary authors who have continued the legend. First-Laurie King. She has written a series of stories starting when Holmes has retired to beekeeping and he encounters a girl in her late teens. A relationship develops and she becoes his protege and ater his wife. There are about six books in the series and they are excellent. Next, the author Caleb Carr, responding to a contest sponsered by the Baker Street Irregulars, wrote a story entitled The Italian Secretary. Instead of including it in an edited anthology, the Irregulars had it printed as a novel. It is also excellent.

Just thought y’all would like to know. Check them out. You will not be disappointed. The Game is Afoot.

VOR-Yes, there are reports that not only was Chuck diagnosed with a slight rotator cuff tear in the off season (rest, not surgery was suggested), but it is also reported recently that he is still experiencing at least occasional discomfort.

All of this brings to mind the Gonzalez and Hampton situations. Why is it that MRI’s are not showing the damage until they get into HIGH RESOLUTION MRI’s? Why not start with the HR MRI and then get the damn problems surgically repaired six months earlier instead of screwing around and waiting? Seems to make sense to me, but not to MLB officials.

Kris Benson attended a workout for the Phillies in Atlanta (why there, I have no idea). There are also reports that the Braves may have an interest in him as well. Would make sens if Chuck is now expected to miss time or to take longer to begin the season.

FBG: Jefferson, GA nestled directly between Gainesville and Athens. I love Rabun County. Beautiful mountains, streams and other scenery. The other raisins and I love to make the 1 hour drive there to hike the great trails.

Lew: I read about the rotator cuff tear, and also read that the off-season rest was supposed to have taken care of it. I am also aware of the way information is carefully crafted before being disseminated to the masses. I thought there was possibly some current news I haven’t heard. It is my understanding that the Braves were aware of the slight tear in the cuff prior to the end of last season. I hope the rest was suffucient. I had my rotator cuff repaired arthroscopically in 1990. I never had the same arm strength afterward, and still have pain 18 years forward. Of course, I didn’t have MLB caliber rehab, either.

Not sure why the Braves would have an interest in Benson unless he’s looking for a 1 year deal at substantially less than the $7.5M option the Orioles declined to pick up. It would seem to me that there are other more cost effective choices. And he has a whack-job for a wife…

Davy, Davy Crockett King of the Wild Frontier.

He fought single-handed through the Injun war, ’till the Creeks was whipped and peace was restored.
And while he was handling this risky chore, made himself a legend, forevermore.
Davy, Davy Crockett the man who don’t know fear.

When he lost his love, and his grief was gall, in his heart he wanted to leave it all,
And lose himself in the forest tall, but he answered instead, his country’s call.
Davy, Davy Crockett, the choice of the whole frontier.

He went off to Congress and served a spell. Fixin’ up the government and laws as well.
Took over Washington, so we hear tell, and patched up the crack in the Liberty Bell.
Davy, Davy Crockett, seein’ his duty clear. (or Serving his country well.)

When he come home, his politickin’ done, the western march had just begun.
So he packed his gear, and his trusty gun and lit out a grinnin’ to follow the sun.
Davy, Davy Crockett, leadin the Pioneers.

Well, he heard about Huston and Austin and so, to the Texas plains, he just had to go
Where freedom was fightin’ another foe and they needed him at the Alamo.
Davy, Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier.

His land is biggest, and his land is best from grassy plains to the mountain crest.
He’s ahead of us all in meeting the test. Followin’ his legend right into the West.

Sam Hill is an American English slang phrase, a euphemism for “Hell”, or “Damn” (as in, “What in the Sam Hill is that?”). Its etymology is uncertain, however it first appeared in print in America in the Seattle Times Newspaper in reference to James J. Hill (Jim Hill). Jim Hill was the legendary “empire builder”, whose railroads included the Great Northern Railway (U.S.). He was a man given to notable rages when anyone dared to oppose one of his grandiose schemes. So frequent were these tirades that the paper carried as a standing headline: “Jim Hill is as mad as Sam Hill.”

Other published usages include “go like Sam Hill” or “run like Sam Hill” – in reference to Colonel Samuel Hill of Guilford, Connecticut who perpetually ran for office in the late 19th Century. However, he was apparently so unsuccessful that except for a brief mention in the Encyclopedia of American Politics, 1946 edition, there is scarce evidence that he existed.

Another explanation links the phrase to Sam Hill, an Abenaki Indian basket maker who lived near Saratoga Springs, NY in the early 19th century, known for the baskets he sold to tourists and for his disheveled appearance.

Others have suggested that the “Sam” in the phrase derives from Samiel, the name of the Devil in Der FreischΓΌtz, an opera by Carl Maria von Weber that was performed in New York in 1825.

Ultimately, the expression may simply be derived from a bowdlerization or alliteration of “hell” with “hill” when used in 19th century America by frontiersmen, especially when they needed to clean up their language in the presence of ladies.

The alternate history webcomic Roswell, Texas refers to “Sam Hill” as being a Texican monument (in the story’s continuity, the Republic of Texas did not join the United States, but remained a nation unto itself) similar to Mount Rushmore, but bearing the faces of four Texas heroes named ‘Sam’: Sam Houston, Sam Walker, Sam Colt and Sam Clemens, a.k.a. Mark Twain.

The Oxford English Dictionary indicates that the origin is unknown. That is probably more reliable than any of the above sources.

    Don’tya love wikipedia?

The Esteemed and generous and wise Carolina Lady, our ever-proper blog hostess with the mostess has deleted a post. That’s disappointing but understandable. I believe I read the deleted post before it went β€œpoof” and I wish it would have stayed and not vanished. It was from the heart I suppose and I would like to have addressed it.

Too late to remark on a missing post now and wouldn’t be right, but I will say that regurgitating Fox News talking points at this stage of life is not necessary. I’ve lived too long, learned a thing or two, been around the block several times and am set in way too many ways to require talking points from any source.

Seems I’ve inadvertently pushed a few hot buttons with one of my old favorite denizens with my political opines. Trust me when I sincerely say, that was not intentional. Not at all. One thing I like about this blog (the denizens) is that anything respectful, legal and moral is acceptable as long as it doesn’t get out of hand. Whether we agree or disagree with each other, this is and has been a respectful, peaceable kingdom from the beginning.

Regardless, I’ll take my share of blame for setting the stage for the eraser being used. If anyone was offended, I’m sorry. If anyone was shocked by anything I said, I’m not really sure of what it could have been but I’ll quote May West and say, β€œThose who are easily shocked should be shocked more often”.

That said, I think we would all agree that political discussion, as cyclical, seldom and spontaneous as it may be, has run its course for now.

    It gets old quick.

At the same time, reasonable adults don’t really need hard and unbendable subject rules like some other blogs, where nothing remotely resembling conservative political commentary or outlandishly liberal statements can be broached, lest negativity escalates and the entire room quickly denigrates into personal attacks and such. Must not mix anything controversial with a community that skews heavily toward youthful immaturity, linear thinking, undeveloped values, poor communication skills or boorish behavior.

It is absolutely fair and good to disagree and it should be fine to discuss politics on occasion (repeat…on occasion). Intelligent ladies and gents do it every day. It’s not a practice on Braves and Stuff to question the integrity, authenticity or intelligence of other denizens for any reason.

    That’s for other blogs.

There are a few fundamental forks in the road of life and we’ve all taken different turns. Having lived a while, I know that, despite our differences, the varied twists, turns and unique paths taken, most roads tend to crisscross and we may all eventually wind up in the same good place at the end of our journey.

That is, if a good compass is used.

(and if your not and idiot)

Gil-No. I’m leaving housing and tax matters just the way they are now and have been for seven years. Four different accountants in two states have looked over our taxes and this is the easiest, most lucrative way to do things. Believe me, we pay so much tax that I have tried everything within reason. I already have enogh of a problem being self employed and don’t need any additional headaches. My son couldn’t afford to pay the mortgage anyway. I think I’ll stick with the status quo.

Besides, I have already made money on this house-a lot of money for what I’ve spent. I will not be overly greedy. We live comfortably, have the bills paid and have a good retirement plan that has been paid into for almost 25 years with TIAA CREF, the National Teacher’s annuity fund, which is widely acknowledged to be the safest, most reliable fund. They have a phenomenal real estate portfolio that is making us almost a 100% return on our contributions and has been for some time-even during this ridiculous housing crisis.

We have very little in stocks (I am not a speculative type person and do not gamble) and have some inflation linked bonds in the fund-but not too much. We also have a basic interest bearing account within the fund, which nets us much more than current rates. We will be in decent shape when we retire in another 10 or so years-IF they do something about health insurance, Medicare and prescription drugs in the meantime and get costs under control.

SG; I didn’t think they were bad. I was just ruffling your’s and BH’s feathers as we have always done. But, it’s all done and I’m cool. Let it go.

The avatar is on it’s way, I think. I am such a klutz when it come to this modern stuff. I just recently broke myself of licking the screen and putting a stamp on it. Let me know if it gets through.

VOR, thanks for the wiki info. I was trying to get a little dig on our friend Paladin but I think that went over everyone’s head.

For all, I don’t want anyone to think that I was complaining yesterday when I made this comment:

Whew, with all this political and religious talk I think I might go away and come back later!

I am not an overly religious or overly politically active denizen. I have my beliefs. I just choose not to share them most of the time. I do NOT mind others discussing those matters at all. Sometimes I read those comments because it helps to draw a picture of the writer in my mind’s eye. Since very few of us know each other personally it gives me a little insight to what each of you are about which I find very interesting (and sometimes very entertaining)!

Other times I just scroll by when I find them to be repetitive or of matters that do not pertain or have interest to me, as I am sure everyone else here does. Yesterday was one of those days. That much chatter about those two topics makes my eyes roll back in my head.

That being said, our wonderful webmistress was obviously distressed by yesterday’s discussions. Distressed enough to delete some posts. Let’s try not to anger the good Lady!

Klobber, I though you left mad. Couldn’t even buy a drink at the saloon because it was locked and the lights were off.

Anyway, this should make everyone get along and create blogharmony for all.

Odd thing about yesterday… One of the things I like most about the blog world is the semi-anonymity. Somehow, though, I opened up and spilled my own guts. Not yet sure why… πŸ˜•

SG; It helped a great deal. I love the HGWT one. The others are a little too close to the home, if you get my drift. BTW, I am cooking(gumbo), studying and trying to keep up with the blog. I am busier than a cat with Montezuma’s revenge on a new tin roof. And that is busy!

CL; Thanks for the tutorial. I am glad to learn that I don’t have to spit over my belly. My expectorater is not up to that monumental task. Can I say all of this. Guess I’ll soon know.
