We see them on the field, we know their names, we talk about what they do or don’t do, but what do we really know about them? The coaches?

This guy for instance. Back in 2005, he ran in Miller Park’s sausage race as the bratwurst (didn’t win.) I never knew! 😆

In a ten-year career, he was a .253 hitter with 40 home runs and 172 RBI in 564 games. His post-season credits include: 1996 NLCS, 1996 World Series, 1996 NL Div Series, 1997 NLCS, 1997 NL Div Series, 1998 NL Div Series, 1998 NLCS, 1999 NL Div Series, 1999 NLCS, 1999 World Series, 2004 NL Div Series , and was the 1999 NL NLCS MVP.

He made his MLB debut in Sep 1995, the same year as Ray Durham, Johnny Damon, Edgardo Alfonzo, Derik Jeter, Jason Giambi, Billy Wagner and Mariano Rivera.

Eddie Perez

Eddie Perez

Eduardo Rafael Pérez was born May 4, 1968 in Venezuela.

Here are some excerpts from a great article about Eddie, written by Jill Lieber of USAToday in 1999:

Braves backup catcher Eddie Perez has been reduced to a plodding, slump-shouldered, knock-kneed M*A*S*H* unit.

Name a body part, and the battered and bruised Perez has injured it in some way, shape or form. His shoulders, biceps, thighs and ribs have been tattooed with large, round, black and purple hematomas, the result of being the human backstop for hundreds of foul tips.

His jaw, now chronically arthritic, snaps, crackles and pops every time he speaks or chews, thanks to all those 90-mph fastballs that have ricocheted into his catcher’s mask.

His left index finger constantly swells and throbs, a 24-hour reminder of pitch after pitch having slammed into his mitt.

And a broken blood vessel in the middle finger on his left hand kept him out of Sunday’s World Series Game 2.

His knees are riddled with painful tendinitis, and let’s not forget those spike wounds, or that stunning concussion.

“Eddie’s like a magnet,” says Braves coach Pat Corrales, who

Making the tag

caught for four major league teams from 1967-75, including a stint as the backup to Cincinnati Reds’ Hall of Famer Johnny Bench. “I’ve never seen anybody take as many blows.”

……..

Mental and physical toughness, the patience of a saint and the dutiful prayers of his beloved family have carried Perez to the top of the baseball world this season.

It was only two weeks ago that the 31-year-old from Cuidad Ojeda, Venezuela, vaulted himself into America’s consciousness in the National League Championship Series. He hit .500 against the Mets and was named the NLCS Most Valuable Player.

…….

The second youngest of Salvador and Lila Perez’s six sons, Eddie grew up in the oil-rich region of eastern Venezuela. His father, recently retired, worked for 50 years in one of the local oil refineries.

When he was 7 years old, Eddie learned to play baseball from Salvador, a longtime catcher for several of the great local amateur club teams. The following year, inspired by his father’s passion for the position, Eddie, now 8, moved to catcher.

In September 1986, right before Perez was to graduate from high school, Pedro Gonzalez, a Braves scout and longtime coach in the Dominican Republic, plucked him out of a crowd of 62 players at a local tryout. Perez signed a $15,000 free-agent contract with the Braves and a $5,000 pact with the Venezuelan Winter League’s Aragua Tigres, which were managed by countryman Davey Concepcion.

I was rich,” Perez says.

…..

For the next nine years, Perez languished in the minors, playing winter ball in Venezuela to make up for all the time he spent on the bench, right up through this past offseason.

Tragedy struck in 1993. While sliding into home plate against Class AA Huntsville (Ala.) on May 23, Perez dislocated his tailbone. He flew home to Venezuela to recuperate and did not return to the team until Aug. 27. “The first day I got back, one of the coaches told me to get dressed, that I was taking batting practice,” Perez says. “It was raining, and he thought it would be a good chance to practice sliding. I was panicked.

“He said, ‘Run and slide in front of me.’ I was so afraid to try that I kept running and running, but I couldn’t ever find the courage to slide. Finally, he ordered me to do it. When I did, and I had no pain, it was the best moment of my career.”

Well, until he fought back from the emotional devastation of having been dissuaded by coaches from going to Venezuela for the birth of daughter Maried .

Until he was named the MVP of the Venezuelan Winter League in ’94.

Until he was called up to the Braves on Aug. 30, 1995.

And until he was named NLCS MVP last week.

“That’s the biggest thing to ever happen to me,” Perez says.

The new two-story Duluth, Ga., home he and wife Marisol, his childhood sweetheart, share with their two children, Maried, now 5 1/2, and Andres Eduardo, 17 months, is filled with bouquets of flowers from friends and Braves fans.

Salavador and Lila, who have been visiting Atlanta since late September, are caught up in the whirlwind of the postseason. Marcos and Jolanda Nava, Marisol’s parents, came along, too.

This is the first time Salvador and Lila have been able to attend Eddie’s games together since their son signed with the Braves back in ’87.

“This is too much, too exciting,” says Salvador, with Eddie translating.

Says Lila, who also does not speak English: “It’s an incredible dream. I’m crying all the time.”

Adds Salvador, “I cry, too.”

And so does their son. His tears come from a much deeper place than the delight of having won the MVP trophy and playing for the Braves in the World Series. The tears mean Perez finally has made it in America.

“My family never let me quit,” Perez says. “That they’re here to share in one of the most important moments in my life means so much to me.”

from The Sporting News, 1999:

“I’m a nobody,” Eddie Perez says. “Just one of the guys on the roster, doing his job. Javy (Lopez) will be back next season, and I’ll be on the bench again.”

Yes, Lopez will return as the Braves’ No. 1 catcher in 2000, healed from the knee injury that sidelined him in July for the balance of the 1999 season. But no, Perez does not qualify as a nobody.

Perez, best known as Greg Maddux’s catcher and an able fill-in for Lopez since becoming a full-time member of the Braves in
1996, has added to his resume the past 2 1/2 weeks. Against the Mets in the NLCS, Perez went 10-for-20 and hit two home runs, the second a game-winning shot in Game 2. Perez, a native of Venezuela, hit .500 in the thrill-a-minute series, with the rest of the Atlanta offense batting a composite .194.

…………..

“I’m not a good hitter,” Perez was insisting as he rocked the Mets time and again. “I’m just hot, I guess.”

True, Perez hasn’t exactly been a hitting machine in his four full seasons in the majors–as his career average of .259 attests–but he has made significant contributions. In 1998, he batted .336 in 61 games, and his grand slam in the division series assured Atlanta a place in the NLCS. This season, he hit .266 after the All-Star break.

Manager Bobby Cox, understandably, is high on Perez.

“He’s not an out guy by any means,” Cox says. “He’s a great defensive catcher, a skilled catcher who can catch and throw and work the pitchers.”

Perez, 31, was thrilled to be named MVP–the vote was unanimous–in this year’s NLCS. “I think this is the biggest thing that has happened to me,” he says. “Winning the World Series in ’95 was nice, but I didn’t have a chance to play.”

Perez, a late-season call-up four years ago after spending nine seasons in the minor leagues, was in the lineup for Game 1 of the 1999 World Series but didn’t start Game 2.

“I’m a backup,” maintains Perez, whose humility and disarming smile make him a favorite with Braves fans. “But I have to be ready because we don’t have Javy (a close friend). My main thing is catching. I try to take at-bats as they come.

“… (Pitchers) don’t want to pitch to Chipper (Jones). They don’t want to pitch to Brian (Jordan). They want to pitch to Eddie.”

Not anymore.

Doug Glanville wrote a really funny article for the NY Times called Lovers, Not Fighters in which he wrote:

The major leagues also had its share of comedy. Take the fight I was in with the Atlanta Braves, when I was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies. Over the course of a week, my teammate Paul Byrd, a pitcher, had unintentionally hit Braves catcher Eddie Perez not once but twice in the back.

Perez and Byrd had once been teammates (and Bible study partners), but Perez had apparently left forgiveness at the door. When Byrd stepped up to the plate for his next at-bat, Perez hit him and then jumped him. Since I was on-deck and the closest player to the fray, I ran over to pry them apart.

The next thing I knew, I was at the bottom of a pile of players, my legs trapped, spikes barely missing my various body parts. The Braves’ Ozzie Guillen evidently decided that the best way to get out of the pile was to pull me out by the head. I had a stiff neck for three days.

What I found interesting was that instead of Perez and Byrd ripping each other’s hair out, they were locked together in a protective embrace, apologizing and praying to get out of this mass of humanity. Everyone within earshot was wondering why we all risked physical harm for a séance.

To add injury to absurdity, when our bullpen coach came running in from left field to join the fight, he pulled a hamstring halfway to the pile.

Then there is the video where Tim Hudson scares the daylights out of Eddie at the team hotel:

Just my opinion, but I think he’s a pretty neat person and I’m glad I know a little more about who is really is. Hope you enjoy it, too!

Great post CL!!! You came off the bench and knocked a home run with that.

I like Perez… admittedly more as a coach than a player (even though I have no idea how good a coach he is). Seems like a good guy.

Boy, this Braves team really sucks. No life. Then again, Washington is a sleeper… a veritable powerhouse.

Good thing Wren brought French back so quickly from Mississippi. He’s not playing better, worse in fact… but I suppose he’s more comfortable in Atlanta and all. You know, near home and Buffy’s home cookin’. So many “betrayals” with Jeffy. His arm has betrayed him, as has his bat, his legs and, oh… the Braves have betrayed him. Don’t his arms and legs and bat and team realize he’s an Atlanta star?

Now Cox: At some point will Bobby move French back, say about fifteen or twenty steps in right field, so all of those catchable balls flying over his head might get caught. Can Bobby see right field from where he sits in the dugout?

Another puzzle: If Kelly hits lefties and Prado is struggling with the bat and having trouble getting to and holding onto the ball at second, who does Bobby play? Managing is a complicated job.

Yes Grinch… Bobby has spent lots of time there in that ol’ dugout. I think he likes it. They’ll have to pry him out. But then, why would ‘they’ want to do that?

Nice double play by French. But did you notice? He looked good on that swing. By Jove… I think he’s coming around.

I’ll amend my earlier suggestion about moving French back twenty steps in right. I’d move him quite a bit further than that. Way back… say Mississippi. Realizing of course that fans pay good money to see a local high school standout completely melt down under the bright lights and glare of the national stage. Whether our manager is unconscious or not, playing Jeff through this abysmal period could possibly ruin his entire career before it even gets started.

    Miscellaneous Political Observations:

Just like George senior, Mr. Kinder-gentler, “Read my lips, no new taxes” comes the chip off the old block son… Mr. Bailout. His “compassionate conservative” domestic promise is neither compassionate nor conservative.

The Bush boys have a habit of telling you what they’re going to do… only in opposite terms. It’s so comforting, knowing that if I screw up and my business fails like Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae, Generous George will come to my rescue too… and all of you will have the privilege of paying higher taxes to bail me out. It’s great not being accountable for our own mistakes, bad investments, stupid decisions, foolish risks or, uh, our greed.

Makes me all warm and fuzzy just knowing McCain or Obama might rescue us with their vast knowledge of global and US economics. Oh, and contrary to their beliefs, that heat they feel in this Country is not due to global warming… it’s a bear breathing on the back of our neck before taking a bite. Yet it remains important for us to spend billions on a natural, cyclical event on earth, lest we be seen by Russia, China and the UN as cheapskates.

Now Obama plans to lift himself to a higher status by giving a campaign speech at the Brandenburg Gate in Germany. I guess that’ll give him the gravitas he so sorely lacks. Well, I suppose he’s earned the right to speak there. After all, what did President’s John Kennedy with his, “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech during the time we were on the brink of world war… or President Reagan’s, “tear down that wall” line, ushering in an end to the Cold War and the Soviet Union itself.

Yessirree, Mr. Obama is going to have a powerful speech there too. Maybe he can talk about Chicago politics or something. He’s certainly earned the right with his years of service and global relationships to go stand at that gate and say, uh… something important. Maybe something about ‘change’.

I’m not through yet. It’s a good thing we have a Fed Chair like Ben “we’ll just throw money at the problem and if we run out we’ll just print more money” Bernanke. What an economic team we have working for us in the difficult times. Yes… we are in good hands in Washington.

All I can say is, it’s a good thing there are so many of ‘us’ and so few of ‘them’. Now WE just have to pay attention and do something about all of it.

This post cost only fourteen carbon credits.

Baseball: SG, tell me what you think about this. Terrence Moore just wrote a column about how keeping Tex is the only intelligent move. I myself have posted on there why it isn’t, and even though it was put up yesterday there are still 0 comments posted underneath. Just tuned in and thought I’d accidentally pushed ‘play’ on my DVR… of last night’ game. This is ugly. At least we’re consistent. I really hope we get rocked so bad today that the Braves are humiliated and the management is embarrassed. They can’t call two games with the Nats a fluke. We’re bad.

Grinch, later today I’ll read the Moore thing and give my take. Knowing his usual slant and yours, I’m already naturally inclined to agree with you… but I’ll check it out. For starters, “keeping Tex is not the only intelligent move”. Keeping Tex may be what the Braves do out of a default position, but in my opinion Tex is the least of Braves troubles. The Tex situation is symptom, not the problem. Anyhoo, I’ll read his and yours and chime in later.

Grinch, not sure where you got your bear video and when it was taken, but the Church of Global Warming likes to take those pics during the warmest part of the year when ice naturally breaks up and such. Polar bears have been putting up with this stuff for a long time. Add a few Hallmarkish, big-eyed Polar bear shots and voila… a cute Coke commercial gone very, very wrong.

In our last ‘warming’ discussion I offered to send you reams of science/climatology based documents. To save time I’ll just put it in a nutshell here: There is global warming. It is a naturally occurring event. Here’s the catch: man didn’t cause it and man can’t fix it, no matter how good it feels to save the planet. Hell, if Hollywood believes it it must be true.

Many of the same Gore ‘scientists’ were wringing their hands 25 years ago and ranting that we were entering a new ice age. The media swallowed it whole then, just as they are now with the opposite temperature prognostication. There is a reason that a few inner circle libs preach global warming and it doesn’t have anything to do with the weather. It’s about social change and redistribution of wealth, not rising seas and starving bears. By the way, when is the last time anyone saw a skinny Polar bear?

As is the case most often (since the flat-earth and Salem witch trial folks had their way), we best ignore the chattering, self promoting demagogues and spend our money on protecting and preserving natural habitats, controlling air, water and land pollution and put our best energy and money to ‘saving the humans’… all over the earth.

The earth will take care of itself if we do those things.

Now I have to blow a ton of carbon credits driving to the airport in my Dodge Ram and putting my sis-in-law and niece on a big, gas guzzling plane back to Anaheim. I’ll have to turn off the AC and walk like Forest Gump for a while to earn those credits back. 😀

SG, it was a show on Animal Planet. This is hardly even news anymore, and it’s certainly not liberal propaganda (though there’s plenty of that too, to be sure). The entire North Pole will have melted this summer for the first time in recorded history. That isn’t some hippie crunching numbers, you can fly a plane over where it’s supposed to be and look for yourself. Does that mean Al Gore is right about everything and isn’t a smug, condescending butt-monkey? No, and no. But if you can’t look out your window and notice something’s wrong you need to get out more. I’m not sending or posting counter numbers anywhere to whatever numbers you’re using because a convincing argument can be made from manipulating numbers for just about anything if you’re clever enough, and as I keep trying to tell you all I’m a moderate Republican more than anything else. I just know I don’t hear bullfrogs anymore at night for the first time and it’s not natural for there to be tropical storms in Atlanta every three weeks and simultaneously have a record drought that they don’t even help. 10 years ago we NEVER had a smog warning here; it was a clean city. Now every other day old people and children are advised to stay indoors because of excess ground level ozone. The evening news weather teams aren’t making that up to support Obama. It’s natural for Kansas to have Tornadoes and Florida to have hurricanes, but not at the rate they’ve been happening. Not combined with the record flooding and record droughts, record snows and record heat waves, record lightning et cetera. Something isn’t right, and it doesn’t take a printout from a political website from either party to figure it out.

CL, Lew called me and said the umpire made a really poor call at the plate, our pitcher turned and walked toward 2nd without making a gesture and the ump charged the mound. Bobby came running out and the ump tossed him without even looking in his direction. He said the announcers were visibly and thoroughly disgusted; wish I could remember the guy’s name. I can’t STAND umpires/referee’s who think people paid to see them and alter the outcome of a game to make some kind of point.

Some of these umps are too big for their britches!

Here’s what the article above said:
While increasing his record ejections total to 141 at Turner Field on Sunday afternoon, Cox didn’t look like a 67-year-old man, one who knows that it would be in his best interest to get new knee replacements in the near future. In fact, by the time he finally left the dugout, it appeared Cox had yelled about all that he could say in the direction of home-plate umpire Chris Guccione.

Cox burst out of the dugout when Guccione came around the plate and started waving his finger in the direction of Braves pitcher Buddy Carlyle, who had turned away from the plate after walking Willie Harris with the bases loaded in the third inning.

Guccione then waved his fingers toward Cox, and when the manager continued onto the field, the veteran umpire issued the ejection, which prompted the heated argument.

Cox began yelling at Guccione in front of the plate, and then continued to voice his displeasure as he and the umpire walked up the first-base line.

After Cox returned to the dugout, Guccione then had some words with Braves catcher Corky Miller. Then, upon seeing that Cox still hadn’t left the dugout, Guccione once again signaled for Cox to head toward the clubhouse, which prompted a few more choice words from the manager.

Guccione seemed to take displeasure in the fact that Carlyle had stared at the plate when his 2-1 pitch to Harris was called a ball.

After Guccione ruled a 3-1 fastball to Harris to be a ball, Carlyle grabbed the left side of his jersey, raised it toward his mouth and yelled something that could have been directed at either himself or Guccione.”

    Ump reacted improperly, I think.

Grinch, I trust very few to know what will happen, politically, enviromentally, and old -lly….I can only read up and make my own judgements.

Remember what Carl Sagan said would happen to the world after Saddam set fire to all those oil facilities while pulling out of Kuwait???? Billions and billions of years….Ok, I exaggerate 😛 , but mr. smarty pants was sure there would be years and years of fires, and that there would be a near nuclear winter effect. Red Adair came in , and put the fires out in months(Gee, why couldn’t Sagan see that happening?) with very little effect to the atmosphere.

Ok, what does that have to do with anything??? Good question! Just that experts are only experts because they say they are…..

Get this, the arctic ice has INCREASED since last July!!!!

    http://newsbusters.org/blogs/p-j-gladnick/2008/07/18/will-msm-report-2008-arctic-ice-increase

Arctic sea ice extent on July 16 stood at 8.91 million square kilometers (3.44 square miles). While extent was below the 1979 to 2000 average of 9.91 square kilometers (3.83 million square miles), it was 1.05 million square kilometers (0.41 million square miles) above the value for July 16, 2007…

Why hasn’t the media mentioned this????? Because it doesn’t fit the story they want to tell us, plain and simple.

There is global warming. It is a naturally occurring event. Here’s the catch: man didn’t cause it and man can’t fix it, no matter how good it feels to save the planet.

Grinch, I repeated that in case you missed that part of my earlier post. We agree that there IS global warming. Not much, but a bit, although the mean worldwide temperature hasn’t changed enough either way to account for anything substantive… even if those bastions of science and political neutrality like Animal Planet, The Weather Channel or CNN say its’ so. 😆

The smog you see is not a result of global warming, per se… it’s mostly a result of too much crap being pumped into the air, combined with too little rainfall.

Actually I have been outdoors quite a bit this past week… boating and such. Nothing nearly as productive as Gil. The weather seemed more like fall than summer, although today summer was back in full force with very little breeze. Neither of which have anything to do with global warming of course… just sayin’ I get out quite a bit and like Robert Zimmerman might say, “I don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows”.

Speaking of ‘blows’, I know a baseball team that is doing that quite often. More a sign of cooling than warming. 😀

Which of these things will happen?

Selig will act like a leader, man up and get the umps in line.

The republic will secede from Washington.

Obama and McCain will have a meeting, admit they won’t make good leaders and agree to restart the primary process with others.

People will post more comments on Braves and Stuff so that it takes more than 3 minutes to catch up on a full day of posts.

NASCAR will mix it up and go the opposite direction on the track. All right hand turns for a while.

Muslims worldwide will publicly denounce radical Islamists.

An innovative breakthrough will be made, enabling cars to run on water, which will reduce carbon emissions, screw the terrorists out of their war funding, help our economy and save us money.

Cats and dogs will suddenly love each other.

Terrence Moore will write a really good article.

The Braves will play .700 ball the rest of the year and make the playoffs.

“It was pretty embarrassing. We didn’t do anything it took to win a game. It’s tough to swallow when we’re in a must-win situation, and we were completely flat. Offensively, defensively, pitching … we didn’t do anything right.”

“As bad as you can play a game, that was it. From all aspects of the game. We just got our butts kicked.”

“The season’s not over — we’re going to keep fighting. But we need to go on a major roll. We need to do more than win series.”

While I’m sure the earth is doing what it’s doing on purpose, I strongly disagree we aren’t helping it along somehow. And calling Animal Planet liberal because they have preserving animals on their agenda seems kind of silly to me. Are they supposed to say it’s ok to remove an animal’s habitat because corporations need love too? They’re animal experts, and they say what they say because it’s the truth. If anything, most if not all of their funding comes from major corporations and if they were predisposed to be biased it would likely be in the opposite direction. But whatever; we can agree to disagree.

Berigan, agreed more or less about experts, which is why I just cited what I see and feel as opposed to what I read. Like religion, the environment is a lose/lose subject to discuss in polite company. People can’t remain rational.

I never post as anything but Grinch over there; I got tired of Head Cooch insisting I was Stinky. And Bobby’s closed door meeting with the team before yesterday’s game to tell everyone the trade rumors were nonsense and we were still in this thing sure didn’t seem to have a very positive immediate effect, did it? We just gave up 15 runs to Willie Harris, Pete Orr, Ryan Langerhaans and Johnny Estrada. Yikes.

Grinch, Animal Planet does know about animals and I’m sure they care about them too… just like you, me and most folks. Thing is, when they and some others start talking less ‘Animal’ and more ‘Planet’ they tend to fall in line with the current misinformation campaign of (man-caused) global warming. They probably mean well but are unwittingly being used by a few executives on the top floor, who pass ‘content/position’ directives. That’s all. I’m not even saying they’re a ‘liberal’ group… just being useful to an agenda at times.

I’m also not saying and have never said that we aren’t polluting the environment. For the most part we behave like pigs. We treat the earth like it’s a garbage dump. I work hard to advocate green initiatives and am very passionately invested/engaged in sustainability practices, preservation and protection of our environment.

Greatest impact the earth has as far as cooling is volcanic activity…. So, to decrease global warming I propose we cause more volcanic eruptions…. 🙂

Now the truth…. pollution is a bad thing, anything that will help clean our air, stop polluting the ocean and poisoning the earth is a good thing.

Not making sure we are playing on a level field with the rest of the world is a bad thing. When NAFTA was first proposed, I constantly harped that we as Americans could compete with anyone but we were not willing to work for 50 cents a day like Vietnam. Unfortunately, my voice was not loud enough to be heard over the din of CEOs who saw cheap labor and offshore relocations as the promised land for their bottom lines.

So, the answer is it’s complicated but doable. A lot like the Braves right now…. And yes, I had to laugh when Corky airmailed that throw into right field. It somehow fit with everything else going on in the game.

My question is this, do we give the Braves a pass because of all the injuries we have had this year or do we slam them for failing to live up to their potential?

I have thought about it and tried to figure what is different this year as far as the line up is concerned and from what I can see, the biggest difference is not having Edgar Rentiriea batting second. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think Jair was worth the trade but Edgar seems to be the guy that made this line up go last year…

I had to laugh when Corky airmailed that throw into right field. It somehow fit with everything else going on in the game.

Maybe he was just learning from Jeffy… airmail and all.

Now Gil shows up. Y’all musta’ sensed I was leavin’. I think the Braves need a good, healthy dose of criticism this year, otherwise, are we the Stepford fans? We owe it to our team to voice our pleasure with good play and our displeasure with bad play. Players need to hear from reasonable fans (that know the game), whom expect not so much to win, but to hustle, train, give their best and practice, practice, practice.

That said, most of our criticism should be directed not at the players but toward those that manage the team and lead the club. Cox, Wren, all the coaches and everyone upstream to the Liberty folks need to hear our displeasure. I don’t want to hear that we’re spoiled for 14 straight pennants. I want to see a winning team OR a team that is improving, able to execute fundamentals and a team that is managed by someone that seems to embrace the 21st century… that’s all.

Oh, and I don’t really agree that Edgar was the catalyst for the Braves last year. He’s great, he played great for us and I think he’s a great guy. I think the difference between last year’s production and this year is not one man on the field. If it’s just one man, it’s Cox. The debacle that is 2008 in Atlanta is a perfect storm. Not sure if it can be explained fully, but it ain’t bad luck and it ain’t pitching… so far anyway, on both counts.

Now I gotta eat. I’m so hungry I could eat a Polar bear.

Gil, how right you are. There are fewer things in this world that make me more angry than outsourcing American jobs overseas. Disagree about Renteria though; he was indeed an important part of our lineup but he was getting older (look at how he’s doing in Detroit; ESPN had him as an honorable mention in “biggest freee agent bust” category a week or two ago). Escobar’s been pretty effective when he’s healthy and has more upside and a much stronger arm. I think it would be a wash at best until you throw in Jurrjens (how bad would we be right now without him?), then it’s no contest IMO.

That completely backs up my argument that everything’s off-kilter, and even further backs up a hypothesis I’ve had about radical conservatives that’s kept me moderate from the get-go. That article you started with was so sure that you wouldn’t actually think about what you read that it screamed “Look, there’s MORE ice than usual and the liberals are wrong again!” and even had the stones to link to a legitimate site knowing their fan base would be too excitable to realize the article was defeating itself with its own logic. And they were right. Go back and read that link again, dude; I’ll give you a mulligan. And for god’s sake use this as a learning experience to get your news from some different sources. I shouldn’t have to take over your argument for you to give you better ammunition; I could’ve linked to a dozen more logical anti-global warming essays with more appropriate supporting research. Click “unsubscribe” before it’s too late! 🙂

Dude, the ice is supposed to melt away…it hasn’t….plain and simple….I know, more summer to come, but the image shows it’s still there, as much as last year….Antarctica’s ice is growing….but of course that could be a sign of global warming. EVERYTHING is a sign of global warming. heavy rain??? Global warming. More snow than usual??? Global warming. A colder than usual winter??? GLOBAL WARMING.

The Al Gore’s of the world will never admit the possibility of being the least bit wrong. The argument is over. SG could no doubt dig up that list of 1000’s of scientists that don’t believe it is purely man made. They don’t get face time…it doesn’t fit the agenda….

And what would my agenda be; I have a nice house and yard regardless and no kids to worry about the future for. It’s not like I work for Greenpeace. No doubt Gore is, my man; and his ozone torching mansion in Tennessee doesn’t help his position any. I think he’s probably right about some of it, but there’s definitely an odor of sour grapes involved. And penalizing scientists for having differing opinions is retarded; if they all concurred about anything the world would split in two from the shock. I do believe as I said earlier that the earth is moving on its own; I just wish people would act more responsible with their stewardship of such a beautiful place.

FBG, the Grinch is not giving you his recipe for Hamburg-ers, but I will. It is the addition of cheese… the secret ingredient. Now, if hickory chips are added… mmmm good. Lot’sa pepper, some salt and a touch of special sauce and it’s a masterpiece. Mr. Fly would agree I’m certain.

The little parallel dark brown stripes assure the best taste, although my George Forman grill does a pretty good job in a lazy pinch.

Berigan, if all was said and parsed and understood about global warming… from a fundamental pov, I really think you, Grinch and I would all violently agree. Differ on a few details and maybe even perspective, but agree we would.

I hate to stifle a potentially good argument on the environment but I think that both you and the Grinch make great points and hit all all around the bulls eye. Which is as close as any of us can get… with the occasional red dot being hit right smack dab in the middle with an impression or instinct, even if not supported by a fact at our fingertips. It’s not only stuff… it’s good stuff.

CL and FBG, never fear, it’s OK… we are all supposed to try and change minds by posting our ideas, pointing out our differences of opinion, citing our sources when necessary and sharing our perspectives… even if they are vastly different. We only fight when we run out of ideas.

I didn’t say I think the Braves should not have made the trade, they got quality for quality, it is just what has made the difference. (A lot fewer runs being scored). Edgar had a career year last year, plus he was clutch… Now, what to do?

Yes, it starts at the top… Did anyone else notice Langerhans has shortened his stroke and looks like he did before the toe tap? Also hitting like he did two years ago… Come to think of it, Willie Harris looked like an All-Star too… So, why is an organization like the Nationals able to get more out of the players than the Braves? Hitting coach? Manager? Other?

Personal opinion not based on research to follow…. I don’t think there is a real global warming trend, just an effort by environmentalist to reduce pollution of all types and they are simply using the global warming argument because it is a very effective scare tactic. Much more so than just stating that smog is bad for you…..

I don’t think coal fire plants using modern technology is really all that bad, old smoke belching plants are…. To want to eliminate coal is crazy.. Developing clean air technology to utilize a resource of which we have a 700 year supply is smart.

The same people who protested against nuclear power are the same ones wanting us to burn corn…. DUH…

One final shot… Americans don’t leave a carbon footprint, they leave an assprint….

    Hello, Stuffville.

I am home from a week in Anchorage, Alaska, having had zero access (or desire for said access, quite honestly, but I’ll expound on that later) to any news whatsoever regarding our beloved Braves, so naturally I come to this Burg in search of the skinny, the poop, the word on the street. What I have learned is that the earth is in climate change, that political and research entities are agenda driven, and that Terrence Moore is and idiot. Hmmm… Granted, I am suffering from a combination of jetlag and sleep deprivation, but I’m not finding any Breaking News there.

( By the way, for what it’s worth: The temperature in Anchorage reached 60 only twice the entire 8 days I was there. It rained every day. There is still snow on the mountains. I returned home with a cold. The locals are complaining that they will have no summer this year, since the local tree and plant blooming patterns indicate that the snow season will arrive early this year, most likely in about 6 weeks. Global warming has apparently forgotten about Alaska. Now, if you say I shouldn’t make such an assertion based on 8 days experience, I will say that “scientists” should not make absolute assertions based on less than 200 years of recorded data, while the earth has been spinning for billions of years. I’m just sayin’… )

Global Warming is a money maker…nothing more. The Michael Moore’s of the world make money on their films…jetting from site to site (???), leaving ‘their’ carbon footprint in their wake, the media follow along chopping down trees to sell more papers, and Mr. Gore, who’s never done a value-added thing in his life becomes an expert on the heels of inventing the internet. Oh…and here we sit burning the television for hours on end watching the weather channel, which also advises us we’re all ‘and idiots’ for not believing there’s global warming.

Grinch: you put it best. Believe what your eyes tell you, and investigate and/or get involved (if so inclined) in the solution. Personally, I don’t need the scare tactics of global warming to believe in pollution. I can see it…and the chopping of trees to pave more asphalt/concrete/build more shopping centers (that we can’t afford to drive to…or simply don’t endure the traffic to get to!), to get disgusted by it all. Why are the tax incentives for building, but not for rehabilitation? 😕

Face it, the media/politicos/advocates (can you say lobbyists?) insist on constructing a platform so massive, so incredibly overwhelming that we common folk feel only the government can possibly solve, thereby justifying their existence, and/or for the ‘feel-good’ types, give a cause individuals can harp on (hardly helps solve…but does ‘feel good’), and creates a topic that can be spun/regurgitated/slanted to give the ‘experts’ a mouthpiece for years to come and sell TV time/newspapers/magazines…which, naturally, should fly in the face of the very issue they’re reporting, but…hey, it makes $$$. Thus, full circle.

What causes global warming? $$$$$ Take that away, and no one will give one whit about it.

Monday mornings are a good time for a rant! 😆 In a bit, once my second cup of ‘java crude’ kicks in, I’ll look over this drivel I just posted and think, ‘Oh my…what is this?’ Like I said…could be drivel! 😆 Definitely passion!

Here’s a brief, Reader’s Digest version recap of my week in Anchorage. My team partnered with a local ministry called GraceWorks, which places groups in areas of need in Anchorage which we might call “the ‘hood”. We worked in the Mountain View district, which is known for its high crime rate, its drug activity, and its neglected children. We spent our time in a dual capacity, doing much needed repair work in a church, but more importantly, spending our days at the Boys and Girls Club in the middle of the district, where all of the street kids gather to play and hang out. These kids are completely on their own from early morning to late at night. They rely on the B&GC for things like food and shelter from the rain. After 6:00, when the B&GC closes, these kids just roam the streets, where drugs, gunfire, and fights are the norm. And when I say kids, I’m talking anywhere from 5 years old and up. It is absolutely heartbreaking. When you watch 2 kids get in a fight because one of them got food from somewhere, well, let’s just say that I have very little sympathy for Jeff Francoeur’s current “struggles”…

Raisins, welcome back!!! Air Alaska once boarded 23 passengers on a flight before they realized it was a just a mosquito on the tarmac. (You have added some stars to that crown, my brother!)

There really is a little baseball news above – inbetween the geo-political stuff. The Braves twice had their head handed to them by the next-to-the-bottom team of the NL. Francoeur is doing a poor Bluto imitation. Bobby needs knee replacements for his replacement knees. Some of the NL Umpires need their fannies kicked. The NL champs this year will most likely come from the Central Division. Grinch narrowly avoided a trip to the doghouse for gross negligence. And you were sorely missed.

Of course, when my wife walks in the place, everyone snaps to attention… Seriously… 🙂 hey, she has my attention…. 🙂

Anyway, a bit of the climate change struck home today, 100 degrees.. and to think, it’s only mid July… Well, it’s been hot here before but still… I believe I will put off mowing the lawn until tomorrow.

I still have one more big project ahead of me for the summer, putting up 200 feet of white board three rail fence. I am still waiting on Miss Utility to show up to mark the telephone line. Use to be I could do one of these projects in a day but… two bad knees and a bad back is a serious handicap. If I were a race horse, there would be a pack of dogs waiting for me at the finish line with knives and forks…

    From Ken Rosenthal:

The Angels lack pitching depth after losing right-hander Kelvim Escobar, most likely for the rest of the season. The Braves, though, wouldn’t necessarily want pitching for Teixeira. They would want first baseman Casey Kotchman, who is a favorite of manager Mike Scioscia’s and under club control for three more seasons — but no Teixeira.

The Red Sox could not justify trading Kevin Youkilis for Teixeira even if they had doubts about David Ortiz — Youkilis is hitting better than Teixeira this season and is two-plus years away from free agency, as opposed to two months. The offensive difference between Teixeira, a switch-hitter, and Kotchman, a lefty swinger, is far greater — and while Kotchman is excellent defensively, Teixeira is a two-time Gold Glove winner.

An expanded deal might be necessary; the Angels could ask for a prospect or two to go with Teixeira and Ohman, who also is a free agent at the end of the season, and the Braves might want other players along with Kotchman. But what’s the worst that could happen if the deal was just Kotchman for Teixeira and Ohman? The Angels would get two draft picks if Teixeira departed, and maybe another for Ohman. Kendry Morales then could take over at first, or the Angels could find a more proven answer. First basemen always are in plentiful supply.

The ONLY way that would happen is if Tex called Boras and said, “get me to Boston, that’s my preferred town… and make them agree to an I-wanna-be-there-home-town discount price for a long-term deal of $__ million (less than most think he’ll get), or pay me a huge multi-mil penalty if they don’t get the contract done before ST begins next year.”

What ever happened to Ka’somethin’ Ka’somethin’ the Hawaiian dude, anyway? (I can’t remember his name exactly) Wasn’t he a real prospect at one time? Let’s see here… Kala Ka’aihue… in 91 games at Pearl (AA) he is hitting a robust .255 with 10 homers, 45 RBI and 89 K’s. He does, however, have a .395 OBP, a .433 SP, and a .827 OPS (of which some people like, it means nothing to me) He is currently ranked, hold on now, #246 by the Scouting Book. They go on to say, though:

The younger of the two Ka’aihue brothers, Kala (full name Isaiah Kala Ka’aihue) is the righthanded half of the matching Hawaiian sluggers. Kala was originally drafted by Boston, but declined and was later drafted by the Braves. He’s one of Atlanta’s best power prospects, drawing comparisons to Andres Galarraga. He crushed Myrtle Beach pitching in 2007 (22 homers in only 89 games) and was moved up to AA Mississippi for 2008. He’s a great sleeper, especially for as long as he quietly develops in his older brother’s shadow.

Hmmm… quietly… Let’s hope he makes a little more noise, huh?

It’s her temper… word is, you just don’t want to cross her, no sirree. Pal has been living dangerously.

Anyhoo, she was really angry that he forgot her big day and told him, ‘Tomorrow morning, I expect to find my birthday gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in less than 6 seconds AND IT HAD BETTER BE THERE!!’

The next morning, Pappy got up early and left to hang out, drink beer and ‘cruise chicks’ at the park with his buddy, Chief. Around noon, when his lady woke up she went to the kitchen and as usual, fried up a half dozen eggs and two pounds of bacon. While she was polishing off the last of her dessert of twelve pancakes she looked out the window and sure enough there was a box gift-wrapped with a big red bow on top… right there, smack dab in the middle of the driveway.

Confused and curious, she put on her robe and ran out to the driveway and brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new… BATHROOM SCALE.

Pappy has been missing for over a month. Please pray for him.

    Burrell unhappy with manager
    Posted: Monday July 21, 2008 06:23AM ET

Pat Burrell was not happy with Phillies manager Charlie Manuel’s decision to remove him late in yesterday’s 11-inning loss to the Florida Marlins. “I’m upset, absolutely,” Burrell said. “I’m upset, and I have been for a long time. It’s not personal. I don’t want to ever come out of close games.” Manuel routinely replaces his leftfielder with a speedier defender when the Phillies have leads late in games. Yesterday, Burrell was replaced by Eric Bruntlett in the bottom of the eighth with the Phils ahead, 2-1. Cole Hamels gave up a game-tying home run in the inning.

    Maddux wants to stay west
    Posted: Monday July 21, 2008 01:20PM ET

The Padres plan to ask right-hander Greg Maddux to reconsider his preference to be traded to a West Coast team only. But Maddux, who has complete no-trade protection, is unlikely to budge. Maddux’s agent, Scott Boras, says the pitcher’s desire to stay on the West Coast is “entirely related to his family.” Maddux, who is married with two children makes his permanent home in Las Vegas. The Dodgers, then, loom as the only realistic possibility for Maddux, who has spent his entire career in the National League. The Padres, operating without leverage, would be at a disadvantage in trade discussions.

    Nady, Marte drawing heavy interest
    Posted: Monday July 21, 2008 10:14AM ET

Outfielder Xavier Nady and reliever Damaso Marte continue to draw the most interest for the Pirates and, for that reason, they remain most likely to go. But neither will be given away. Two prospects will be sought for each. Nady’s prime suitors remain the Tampa Bay Rays — who might be the favorite because of their wealth of prospects — and the New York Mets, New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves. Marte’s suitors are a dozen deep. Teams discouraged by Marte’s price are asking again about John Grabow, now that he is back on the mound. Shortstop Jack Wilson and outfielder Jason Bay have also received interest from other teams.

CL, interesting! If I were the Pirates front office, why give up either Nady or Bay, unless you are overwhelmed with an offer??? They play pretty decent baseball. I heard a little while back, that their outfield has hit more homers than any other. They are 9 games under .500. We are 5 under. I don’t think we have the chips, the Rays sure do. And they really need a right fielder.
I kind of laugh at the Mets forever talking about getting him. They had him, and traded him away. And they barely have any talent in the minors. Pirates would be nuts to trade him to them….

I fail to see what the sudden fascination with Nady is. Nady has been in the bigs for seven years. He has a career OBP of .335 and before this HALF SEASON, never hit more than .280 and never played more than 130 games-all of this just once. He has 3 more HR than Francoeur in twice his MLB playing time and has 15 LESS RBI than Frenchy. He also plays and puts up these numbers in a hitter’s park where there is not a single bit of pressure on either him or the team to perform.

This guy is not worth what the Pirates want for him. He’s a fourth outfielder who is having a breakout HALF SEASON and nothing more. Someone on the other blog was positively ecstatic over trading Francoeur AND JoJo Reyes for him. Strangely enough, there were more agreeing with this And Idiot that with we more sensible types.

He might be a decent addition for a stretch run. He’s worth two B prospects (minor league) certainly not two ML starters. This is not an elite player as some seem to think.

Personal opinion, not based on hard facts….

I think what the Braves really need is a shake up in the coaching staff, it does not necessarily have to be Bobby. I think the talent level is there, they are just not performing up to expectations nor to their abilities.

That is what frustrates me most about this team… Underachievers…

Good morning y’all. I don’t blame Maddux for being picky. At this point, he’s earned the right to decide where he plays.

Don’t really get the “bidding war” for Nady. I agree with Lew, he’s a 4th outfielder.

Gil, I think that’s a good idea. I’d keep McDowell & Eddie, clearly they’re doing something right with the pitching, and Hubbard, who we know works his butt off. I don’t know enough about Snitker to say yea or nay. But TP & the Pillsbury Doughboy need to go. Hate to say it about Pendleton. He was great as a player & leader but just doesn’t seem to cut it as hitting coach.

However, I would move McCann to first and bring up Sammons to catch. Mac needs to hit everyday and he cannot do that as a catcher.

Stenchy had an awful at bat with the bases loaded chasing two pitches high out of the zone. Just painful to watch him play right now.

Gil, moving McCann to 1st, and Sammons to catch, sounds like a good idea! McCann tries hard, but he isn’t the best catcher in the world. He just can’t seem to block a plate properly to save his life, he calls a good game though. And as good a hitter as he is, might as well move him to 1st, he will hit 10-20 points higher at 1st.

As for trading for prospects….I heard the GM of the Indians talking during an ESPN game about trading Sabathia, and how he said he had to get someone better than the 2 picks they would get for him, and thats how they got Matt LaPorta….Brewers won’t keep Sabathia most likely, so it’s just a rental. We should be able to get one can’t miss prospect, or a Casey Kotchman + someone else…..of course, the Angels never trade players…

The umpire tonight in my humble opinion deserves to get exactly the same treatment Tim Donaghey got from the NBA. The man was so completely obviously throwing the game for the Marlins (as if he needed to) that he really deserves a felony charge for deliberately obstructing the outcome of a sporting event. It wasn’t that he was blind or had bad judgement; Pinto who came up right after Ring was of similar stature and had a similar delivery. Every single pitch he threw even close to the plate was called a strike; Ring struck out the batter for out number three the previous inning on four consecutive pitches that split the plate belt high. The Marlins crowd was even visibly uneasy with the calls, and they were benefiting from it. Simpson, on the second of those four pitches, said “(umpire’s name), ladies and gentlemen.” That was a total disgrace to all of professional sports. And the funny thing was all it did was make it a 4-0 game instead of 3-0. It would be interesting to find out what bet was being made by the mafia that he was covering. And no, I’m not even close to joking.

It would be interesting to find out what bet was being made by the mafia that he was covering.

Grinch, it’s like that, or maybe the ghost of Eric Gregg. Maybe Tony Montana has dropped out of coke and gotten into sports. “My little friend” turns out to be a $100 bill to the ump for a purposeful bad call ‘the right way’.

I’ve been griping about umpiring for years but this year seems to be the worst. I’ve said it many times:

    Because the Umpire Union is too strong;

    Because the Player’s Union is too self-centered and myopic;

    Because Selig is too weak, stupid, greedy and addled by the owner’s contingent;

QuesTec and Video replay (with proof, accountability and penalties to umps) is the ONLY way to keep the sport from being corrupted.

Trust me, I don’t like the thought of removing some of the human element out of the game any more than any other baseball traditionalist, but what’s worse? There’s big money in sports. Where there’s big money and no accountability, there is corruption. It’s naïve to think otherwise.

Another thought: after witnessing the last few years of .500 Braves baseball with the nadir being this year (or next), it seems the new Disney formula is rubbing off on our team. Just put the show on and fill the seats. It’s just a tourist attraction and a broadcast property to Liberty… all revenue and a new herd of neophytes to walk through the turnstiles every day.

The MLB in general and certain teams specifically are like a tourist trap restaurant where the service is bad, the food is mediocre but the decor is nice the advertising is frequent and the people that don’t know any better keep standing in line to eat it all up. It’s about formula, no heart and the product has deteriorated. Where’s Walt when ya need him? He’d get’em animated properly.

Boy, that was negative. I still love baseball… maybe that’s why I get so disgusted when I see what some are doing to my sport. By the way, Bob Costas has been having some great baseball shows on HBO.

French must be an untouchable Disney property or know where the bodies are buried. Maybe he’s still here because the club thinks he fills the seats with local yokels. That is going to backfire and it’s not Francoeur’s fault. Is Cox or Wren waiting for French to sit on his own, send himself to the minors or platoon himself? It’s so beyond pitiful and absurd that it’s almost funny… in a sad, pitiful and absurd way.

My lineup: Lilly (2b), Yunel (ss), Chipper, Tex, McCann, Kotsay, platoon Kelly and Blanco (RF)… then platoon LF with either Diaz, Infante, Prado, Anderson and after a two week stint in the minors, throw French in the LF platoon mix.

And get rid of Chino. The only reason he’s in there is because he speaks spanish and he’s the only person available that can’t beat Cox to the mound.

Sad but true, hard but fair. There’s no crying in baseball.

I might also add that for many years, the stadium vendors in a major league park had a certain flair about them too. Maybe what is true today is you actually have vendors still plying their trade in the stands. In minor league parks everything is pretty much self serve..

FBG-Having had a residence in Orlando for 11 years, I’ve got to tell you that Disney is a worthwhile thing to do once every ten years IF you have young children. Other than that, as a neighbor, they suck. They buy up all land and zoning variances, get sweetheart deals on property, and taxes, treat their employees like dirt, paying them substandard wages-and aren’t much better with the people who squander all sorts of unimaginable $$$$$ in the Mouse’s abode.

As a neighbor? I wish they’d move back to California and just leave the stadium.

Take umbrage all you want and try to turn it personal. Whatever. They are terrible neighbors, cause massive traffic backups that far outweigh any benefit they bring to the community, pay poverty wages and generally tick off all residents of Orlando. Buy all the passes you want-and visit them in Anaheim.

When I lived on the other coast of Florida, I liked them too. Not so much having them in my back yard-accomplishing nothing but a massive raise in my taxes and insurance payments because of all the Mouseketeers squandering their money.

Look, Lew, I wasn’t talking about Disney as a neighbor or their effect on taxes, traffic or anything else. I’m sorry they made your taxes high but I promise they’re high all over Florida & the traffic is awful everywhere. What bugged me is that you & SG seemed to be implying that only idiots would go there. I’m sure there are other people here who have been to Disney World & enjoyed it. I sure hope you don’t think we’re all idiots.

That is how you take it, not necessarily how it was meant. I just had my fixed rate mortgage go up almost $100 a month for escrow payments because of the congestion Disney causes on I4 and the cost to us, the taxpayers, for fixing a problem that needed fixing 10 years ago (which wouldn’t exist without Disney). That is a fact. Did your taxes go up that much on the West Coast because of traffic planning? Don’t think so. I lived THGERE for 12 years as well.

Look, I’ve gone to the Magic Kingdom a couple of times, WWOS for the Braves more times than I can count, to Downtown Disney (actually met Jason In Maine there this spring for dinner) and to Disney MGM and Epcot. It is not my cup of tea, but to each their own. My son and daughter in law enjoy SeaWorld-I don’t.

However, don’t confuse your fun with what it costs myself and everyone else in Orlando for the privilege of Disney buying all available land and getting the aforementioned sweetheart deals. I look at them like I would a nuclear facility-Maybe somewhat beneficial, but dealing with the daily meltdowns is less than acceptable.

FBG, calm down young lady. I’m sure the Disney World that you’re speaking of and visiting is fun for you and the for the kids. I was talkin’ about the direction they’ve taken the company and their declining film quality and other products, that’s all. Looks like Lew is talking about their effect on the community and such. Sometimes bigger is not better. Disney is a classic example of that. They should just move to Vegas where all the other thrill seekers go.

Just two different perspectives on the same corporation having very little nothing to do with the rides or the Magic Kingdom experience. So chill little sister… but it’s all just Mickey Mouse stuff to me.

Mighty Mouse could mop the floor with Mickey. Goofy wouldn’t stand a chance with Bullwinkle. Rocky weren’t no pushover either. Road Runner was cool. Heckyll and Jekyll would just laugh at all of’em.

Disney was ruined by those not named Walt Disney. Eisner was the worst. Oh, but the rides are probably still fun and after all, they do have Myley Cyrus and Hannah Montana. Hopefully they won’t grow up to be like Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan, those other Disney ‘properties’.

The peaceful little county that I live in used to be a wonderful, relaxed place to live. Then Yankees discovered it. Land prices are astronomical. The entire place is nearly paved over and built upon. Houses crammed on tiny quarter-acre lots selling for $500,000+. Taxes have gone through the roof and are climbing rapidly. Schools having to be built left and right. Traffic??? You wouldn’t believe it! The roads are full of potholes and are miserable. Parking? Ha! Consumers goods? Geared for those up north who brought all their money with them. One huge mall even brags about how much it costs there – and they do a booming business. Wildlife? A few little remaining pockets here and there that haven’t YET been bulldozed may have a few survivors. More and more ‘regular’ families are being taxed out of their homes – but who cares? There’s another Yankee waiting to buy it. The place is totally destroyed, horribly overcrowded, expensive and noisy. And Disney World is 600 miles away.

And you seriously think that is any different in Orlando? Since we moved in there in 97, they’ve reclaimed all swamp land and forest. There were Bald eagles and deer walking the streets and flying around. Not any more. They put in the largest shopping center I’ve ever seen and conveniently forgot to increase infrastructure. Traffic is horrendous. It takes me as long to go to a Wal Mart 35 miles away in New Hampshire as it does to go the Wal Mart two miles away in Orlando. The house I bought for 96,000 is now worth 275,000 (at least before this latest drop off-we won’t even discuss WHY this happened or WHO might have been responsible). This is all wonderful-IF and WHEN I decide to sell-IF I don’t go broke in the meantime paying for all this “Progress” that is so essential to Disney.

However, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the fun y’all might have riding the rides, waiting in line for hours to do so or paying their outrageous prices for mediocre food and souvenirs. THAT is your doing and effects me in no way. Spend your money as you see fit. Raisins-I hope the kiddies enjoy themselves and appreciate what it cost you.

But when you go to see the Mouse and The Duck, maybe you should give thanks to me and the other denizens of Orlando who paid for the nice road you’re driving on. Believe me-It wasn’t Disney who paid for it. WE did. Hope you like it.

As the Braves continue to prove they aren’t legitimate postseason contenders, general manager Frank Wren is moving closer to trading Mark Teixeira, Will Ohman and Mark Kotsay. But despite some recent speculation, he is not shopping Mike Gonzalez and has no intention to do so.

Baseball Prospectus’ Will Carroll speculated Tuesday night that the Rangers would be willing to deal Frank Catalanotto, Marlon Byrd or Milton Bradley to the Braves in exchange Gonzalez.

Reacting to that rumor on Wednesday morning, one Braves official said, “Gonzalez will not be traded before the deadline or during this off-season unless Texas offers us Josh Hamilton.”

With the high salaries owed to Teixeira, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Mike Hampton coming off the books at the end of this year, the Braves will feel comfortable going into next year paying approximately $10 million to have both Gonzalez and Rafael Soriano in their bullpen.

Interest in Ohman has picked up recently. The Braves are looking for something greater than the Type B compensation they’d receive if they were to offer him arbitration and lose him to free agency this year.

In addition, the Braves continue to say they’ll keep Teixeira for the remainder of this season if they feel they can get better compensation through the draft picks they’d receive after losing him on the free agent market.

    Mark Bowman

    Kotsay? Really? Interesting…

Getting Jurrjens, Ohman, and Infante , for what he gave up, proves that.

Just read this on the mlbtrade rumors…bare with the info for a sec…

…..If the Reds offer Dunn arbitration, he may decline because he prefers to play elsewhere or prefers to seek a multiyear free agent contract. If he declines the Reds’ offer and signs elsewhere, the Reds will receive two draft picks.

Let’s say the Yankees sign Dunn. The Reds will then receive one ’09 draft pick from the Yankees. If the Yankees have, say, the 22nd overall pick next June, the Reds get that in addition to their own normal first round pick. The Reds also get a supplemental draft pick squeezed in between the first and second round of the draft. The Reds only get the Yankees’ first-round pick if it falls between #16-30. The first 15 picks are protected. So if the Nationals sign Dunn, the Reds are kind of screwed because they do not get the Nats’ #2 overall pick. Instead, they get the Nats’ second round pick and the supplemental pick.

I didn’t know that! You didn’t get a teams pick, if they really sucked! Why mention this? read on….

the Braves will keep Mark Teixeira if they can’t top the two draft picks they’d receive for him. The risk there would be if Baltimore signs Teixeira and their first round pick is protected.

Great. Lose him, the 5 guys we traded for him, and just get a sandwich pick. They damn well better trade him!!!

Out til later this evening…play nice everyone!

And, as they are succeeding, they are becoming more and more unhappy with it. “The taxes keep going up.” “The traffic is bad.” Well, duh!
(I want to tell them we didn’t have any of that until they got here!) 😆

All we’ve heard is “Well, up north, we….” Somebody even made some bumper stickers that said “We don’t care how you did it up north!” 😆

And they complain. About everything. Because it isn’t like it is “up north.” We’ll be happy to show them where I40 starts; it’ll take ’em right back home. At least stop sneering. It’s not good manners! 😀

Otherwise – the point of my other post is that we ALL have equal rights here and all are welcome to join in and do not need anyone’s permission.

What if Somebody didn’t like Example A and didn’t want ExA to post except in limited, restricted circumstances? And what if Somebody Else didn’t like Example B and didn’t want ExB to post except in limited and restricted circumstances? Now, what if Example C doesn’t like Somebody and Somebody can’t post except in limited and restricted circumstances??? Or maybe Example D doesn’t like Somebody Else?

    This from Mark Bowman:
Braves manager Bobby Cox hasn’t made a definite decision, but based on the way Hampton threw during Tuesday’s bullpen session at Dolphin Stadium, Cox is seriously thinking about starting the oft-injured pitcher for Saturday afternoon’s game against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

“I think he can pitch right now,” Cox said. “We’ll see.”

    Against the Phillies.

Morning, all! Looks like I missed a bit of a to-do. After talking to FBG and Lew privately and looking back over the comments, it would appear to me that they’re both right. I went to Disney this last Spring for the first time and I found it amazing. It’s a part of Americana that should be visited at least once, and if you had kids it would be a shame to deprive them of the experience. However, I also bought an expensive bottle opener at the gift shop that broke the first time I tried to use it and didn’t even get the bottle open. The air conditioner in the hotel is set to not be able to go down below a certain temperature, which is not a comfortable temperature. I also found it disturbing that the TV’s in the room show nothing but Disney channels. Apparently Motel 6 can afford to let you be comfortable enough not to sweat and watch whatever the hell you want to on TV but Disney doesn’t make enough to return the favor. I mean, how much money do you really need? As a corporation (beyond Disney World) they’ve proven themselves to be horribly greedy and far too powerful time and time again by their actions; they have much too much power for their own good. I think any Corporation that wields that much clout, makes that much money and causes that much damage to the surrounding environment ought to have to set up some foundations to build up the surrounding communities and infastructure, kind of like how chemical companies have to donate huge sums to wildlife preservation. Disney ought to be repaving I-4 at the very least.

HOWEVER, that doesn’t mean that just because they’re evil doesn’t mean people ought not visit there and see what’s going on. The Boardwalk is still pretty even if it was built by greedy people. It’s a fascinating place, and boycotting it out of principle hurts yourself more than it makes an impact on them. If another person never went through their turnstiles, the top 500 people in the company could each go buy their own island today if they wished.

This is a job for government intervention, be it state or federal.

And y’all, Lew can come across as self-important and crotchety, but…well he IS self-important and crotchety. However, he has a good heart and really does mean well when he rants; it just doesn’t always come off that way. And he’s often right, even if he barks some shins on the way to illustrating it. I don’t think he meant to imply you were idiots for going, but rather was trying to bring to light that the Disney brain trust belongs in Dante’s inferno, which they do. Not that it isn’t delightful to see the wonder on a child’s face as a lifelong memory is created. Two different things.

Grinch, I do not think CL objected to Lew’s discourse on the topic of corporate greed etc. I think it is when he stepped over the line and attacked Berigan that she took offense. We are all adults here and can handle a few “and idiots” thrown our way but sometimes the air becomes a bit heavy when all that tension is levied.

Now baseball…. Wow, are the Braves hurting or what? (sarcasm alert)

Sure, I don’t hit refresh for a few hours, then people post! 😡

I have to admit, I have really found myself bored with the braves right now. Plus, when they play teams like the Marlins where you can hear dozens of Marlin fans(Every time I hear they had a crowd of 14,000 I think, who are they kidding?) yelling insults to Chipper….it’s just…boring!

I am feeling conflicted….I am glad to see them get more than one hit, and win a game…but, what’s the point???
I feel bit like a Benedict Arnold hoping they fall back far enough that they will finally give up and trade away, but it’s what we all know is in the best interest of the club, long term.

I have thought about it, and I guess everyone was right to say we should trade away Kotsay….right IF we get something for him more than a middling prospect at least….I know he’s been injured, it’s just that when I first heard mention of it, it reminded me of the fact the team has been so cheap for years, and now with the A’s not paying the bulk of his salary, we can’t afford him…..He plays great defense,(better than Blanco in CF) and he just seems like someone we should have. If he leaves, we have 2 OF positions with no real full time player to plug in. I mean, Blanco is scrappy, seems like a smart guy, can actually get bunts down…but, even after a big night last night, he’s hitting .267. Should he really be playing full time???

Frenchy, after another sterling night at the plate (1-5 in case y’all didn’t know) is hitting .231 and has a whole 9 homers for the year. We can all hope he rebounds next year, but right now, if we trade Kotsay, we might need a whole new outfield come 2009!

I know, I sound like I don’t really agree with it. I understand trading him…just worry what the outfield will look like next year…or in a few weeks!

Oh, and why didn’t we keep sticking Brandon Jones out there night after night???? Do the Braves really think he’s a blue chip prospect, and didn’t want to ruin his trade value???? To me, he’s most valuable to us, and “we” should see if he can play up here. He hit .278 in 54 AB’s then sent down. I know he had cooled off, but what can you really tell in 54 AB’s????

Now Chipper is hurt, but we won’t DL him most likely, so we will go into Philly with 24 players. And instead of Someone like B. Jones on the Bench, we have Norton(who has had big hits, but is only hitting .209) Gotay (.208 for the year, and 8 AB’s for the month of July) and Prado. Bet the Phillies are shakin’ in their boots with us coming to town! 😛

    G’morning all!

Ber, our outfield situation is not as dire as it appears on the surface. I agree that Kotsay is a nice piece to have, but he does have trade value, especially to a contender. BJones and Blanco are both 4th outfielders at best. September will be a time for Schaefer to show whether or not he can be counted on to prowl CF for the next few years. Actually, depending on Kotsay’s continued presence on the Braves, Schaefer may get to play earlier. Don’t forget that Diaz will return from the DL soon, and will hopefully remember how to hit. And let’s not forget Anderson, who is at least on a level with BJones and Blanco, if not a gnat-hair above.

Now, I’m going to step out on a limb here. For all the Francoeur talk, of which I have fully participated, the kid is still a kid and has a TON of talent. There is no way, in my very humble opinion, his career stalls at this point of development. I think what we saw over the past 2 years is what you get with him. He’ll be a steady .285 BA, 25-30 HR, 100+ RBI kinda guy that won’t start any All-Star games, but’ll give steady production. I think he’s proven this year that with all of the crap he’s been under, he still loves to play the game and wants very badly to contribute. He has the talent of J.D. Drew and Adam Dunn, but he combines that with the desire to play, excel and win. He will. I’ll bet on it.

Further, Jason Heyward is probably no later than a 2010 arrival. No offense Gil, but if he’s in Gwinnett next year, I’ll see him plenty.

( I know, I’m approaching SG-like length here, but I’ve gotta alot to say before I attempt to get some work done. )

Now, as to the offseason, the Braves will have some cash to spend this year, and I expect Frank to use it. I think he’ll probably look for one more veteran pitcher, but he’ll go hard after a right-handed power-hitting LF – count on it. To me, the intriguing question surrounds 1B. Is there any consideration in the organization to shift McCann to 1B? It could explain why they have been so careful in Sammons’ ‘development.

OK, I know I rambled, and I probably forgot to say a few things I was thinking, but I’m only on my 2nd cup of coffee… 😀

Francouer does indeed have JD Drew’s talent, but he also has Jeremy Shockey’s personality. I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts referring to himself in the third person. IMO, he shouldn’t let the door hit him in the tushy on the way out. I watched them all in Spring Training, and Anderson, Schaeffer and Blanco would make a stellar defensive outfield, with a trio of guys who could all wreak havoc when they get on base. Blanco could be replaced next year with a power hitting LF. The idea of moving McCann to first is solid; Flowers and Sammons both also looked outstanding at ST. They both have rifle arms and good power. If we can’t get Kotchman for Tex, that’s the next best move. That only leaves the aforementioned LF and a mid-rotation veteran starter (Jo-Jo and Chucky belong in AAA) and we’ve got ourselves a pretty danged good team (and Tex, Ohman, and Kotsay ought to net us at least one of those two).

Totally agree there… And don’t forget free agency. This may be the first year in while that the Braves will be players in the FA market. With Huddy only signed through next year, could they go after a top of the rotation guy like Sabathia or Sheets? Or will they seek to extend Huddy? So many questions, and it’s only July… 😐

Personally, I wish they would make a hard run at Sheets in FA and extend Huddy. They also need to resign Campillo. The more I see him pitch, the more I’m convinced that this season is no fluke. With those 3 plus JJ, and healthy competition between JoJo, Charlie and Chuckie for the 5th spot, and I think you have a heckuva rotation. And any contribution you might get from Smoltz is pure gravy.

It is a sad thing that I am talking ’09 so early in ’08… 😦

Well…. The Braves can still keep this season entertaining. Sometimes you can have all the pieces you need and not know how to fit them together, or you can have duplicates or even some that just don’t go with what you have.

I can think of so many Delta commercials that Francoeur could do that would just be hilarious, unfortunately, they would not be what Delta is trying to convey but might epitomize their recent performance.

So, what would we really like to see, guys like Diaz, Harris or Chucky T overachieve or guys like Frenchy and Tex fail to come through in the clutch?

My wife was right when she evaluate BMac and Frenchy when they first came up and she said McCann would be the better player. As usual, she was right again…

Yes, play Mac at first, let him bat everyday, Sammons is a better defensive guy. Anyone else notice that other teams love to run on the Braves? I love McCann but I think he would be more valuable to the Braves as a first baseman.

Like many catastrophic events, this season has not had one single thing which could be pointed to as the cause of collapse. So many moving parts have complicated the matrix. The Braves will get better, I just hope the fine folks of Atlanta are patient enough to see it through.

Blanco is a pretty nice little player. No, he is not the second coming of Brett Butler but still, he has been a plus guy this year. Yes, he has made some mistakes but I am sure he has learned from every one of them. I have not seen any repeated errors made on his part.

Now, two guys who really need to step up. Kelly Johnson and Jeff Francoeur. If those two guys could just get it going on offense the Braves could rattle off a pretty nice win streak. Looking for goats this season? Check out these two guys with runners in scoring position.

I will give Escobar a pass as he had held up his end with either offense or defense while playing hurt. Kelly cannot be a defensive liability if he is not atoning his sins with his bat. Same goes for Frenchy…

Now, I will stop picking on Jeff because I think he is developing Brad Kominsk syndrome… Time for him to clear his head and carry this team for a while.

Raisins, now yer makin’ me self conscious about writin’ more than a howdy do. And for that matter, your post was nowhere near the length of mine. At the end of yours I’d just be gettin’ warmed up and such. 😀

Now, I won’t take that bet you offered about whether French has a great career or not, but I think I’d win the bet. First, I wouldn’t bet against any Braves player… wouldn’t be right, because they’re my team. That said, I don’t think he will excel because I don’t think he has the self awareness or athletic longevity or capability to become what we’d consider an above average player.

I’ll hope I’m wrong and that you’re right about him. I just don’t see it.

Gil, I can’t disagree with the idea of Mac at first. Last year I didn’t think that was a very good idea at all, even with Saltalammachia behind the plate before Tex got here. Now, considering all… it seems like a pretty fair idea for next year and with a Sammons or someone better, I think it’s viable option. McCann has never struck me as a great defensive guy, even though he’s shown improvement.

Then again, if his defensive skills are not that good, is he our best option for the base that gets the most action and some scorching grounders and one-hoppers? Is he the big bopper that we could get on first base? I’m not so sure about that one, but I think not. The options get pretty complex to be sure. Either way, he’s a keeper.

Just an option SG, just an option… The more choices you have, the better the odds of a good outcome. Does not mean you are assure of a good outcome, just increases your chances of being successful.

Now the Frenchman… As long as he is willing to swing at balls out of the strike zone, major league pitchers will be content with exploiting those tendencies. Even when he actually makes contact, his chances of getting good wood on the ball is slim. He is constantly trying to hit a pitcher’s pitch.

Didn’t we see this same thing happening with Andruw last year? I only hope someone can get Jeff straightened out or he may be playing the balance of his career in front of his hometown fans in Gwinnett….. Of course he would improve the gate in that venue…

Now, two guys who really need to step up. Kelly Johnson and Jeff Francoeur.

I could not possibly agree more. There are 2 guys with a ton of offensive potential, but who can’t seem to get it going. Where would the Braves be in the standings if both of them had simply hit for decent average? Average plus power? Alot of those 1 run games would have gone the other way. And as nice as Tex has come on, how many of those hits and HR’s came in the clutch? He has to take his share of the blame as well.

While I deem it a near impossible task to make up 7 games behind 3 teams, the rest of this season has the potential to be very entertaining. I’d like to see Schaefer, Anderson and the like get playing time. And I agree, too, that Blanco has had his moments – last night at the top of the list. If he could do that consistently, I’d forego the power in LF and be happy with the game Blanco brings.

OK, gotta go and take my son to the RaceTrac for a slushie. I promised an hour ago. C-ya!

    A day in the life……

Made a trip to Wal*Mart for another month’s supplies and some groceries this morning. Pull out of the parking lot a little after 12 which will give me plenty of time to get home before Mother’s aide leaves at 12:30.

Pull out onto a 9-lane highway to start home. What??? The ‘Check Engine’ light comes on. Running a little rough –

Lord, there’s a solid line of traffic on both sides of me, and front and back.

Now there’s white SMOKE beginning to come out from under the hood!!!!!

NOBODY will give way so I can get off the road! More smoke!! Engine raggedly running and the temp gauge is sitting on the red H.

Finally I just turn the wheel and MAKE them stop. I turned off of the main road onto a smaller 5 lane road with the thought of making it to the Best Buy parking lot.

No go. Traffic at a standstill. I finally just pulled into the center turn lane, shut off the engine and told Kelly to get out! By now smoke is POURING from under the hood and from underneath.

Did even ONE person stop? No.

I got Kelly to the side of the road and called 911. Here comes a firetruck. Even the firetruck had trouble getting through the traffic.

They determined that there was no fire but they put the kitty litter stuff on the pavement to soak up all the coolant and antifreeze that USED to be in my car.

They stopped traffic long enough to push my car into the parking lot and stayed with me until I made contact with AAA and called a friend to come take Kelly home so Mother wouldn’t be alone after the aide left.

It is very hot in a huge parking lot in July. Just FYI. Don’t recommend it!

Friend arrives and takes Kelly home, the tow truck eventually shows up and it’s off to the dealership.

Will get to it either late this afternoon (right!) or in the morning. Friday morning. Called Enterprise, rented a car. Transferred ALL that stuff from my car’s trunk to the rental. Home, unload everything and put it away. A glass of tea – and a few moment’s peace and quiet.

    sigh…. 😦

I had seven vehicles in the yard here as recently as a year ago; I gave three to the same friend and sold one to my Mom’s boyfriend. I’m down to the two aforementioned cars and an ’82 Chevy p/u. The one I sold, CL, was a ’95 Taurus which is the same thing as a Sable. Good car.

from mlb trade rumors, via Starks…

If the Braves have a bad weekend and decide to trade Mark Teixeira, a deal could come together quickly. Stark says the Braves have already touched base with the Rays, Red Sox, Dodgers, Angels and Yankees. Where Tex fits on the Rays, I’m not sure. Additionally, interest in Will Ohman is said to be “massive.”

    Massive interest in Ohman? Good!

The dealer will likely give you the same amount on a trade no matter what shape your car is in as long as it is not body work. This one isn’t new. Or even ‘newer’! 😆 She’s 14 and gorgeous, less than 99,000 miles. Engine is about 5 years old, has a new transmission, front end was replaced not too long ago (forgot just when), new brakes, new tires, new CD player (the original had a cassette player). And even though $917 is a fortune to me, it still beats high car payments for 5 years! 😀

Braves general manager Frank Wren says that he hasn’t set a definitive mark that will determine how he reacts before next week’s trade deadline. Getting a feel for his team and those in front of him over the next few days is more important to him than making his decision based on whether his team is three, five or seven games out in the NL East race.

Obviously Wren wasn’t feeling too good on Wednesday night, when he saw Chipper Jones exit with a strained left hamstring. Jones didn’t seem too optimistic about playing during this weekend’s series in Philadelphia and if he doesn’t, then Wren might want to don his selling shoes.

If Wren trades Mark Teixeira, the Dodgers and Diamondbacks continue to be the most likely suitors. Both of these NL West teams could provide a good fit for the Braves.

But Wren said on Wednesday that he doesn’t necessarily need a first baseman in return for Teixeira. In other words he might make a deal with one of these two teams without the need to get either Connor Jackson or James Loney back in return.

There has been some thought among scouts that a change of scenery could benefit Jeff Francoeur. But at the same time, they’ve admitted that there really isn’t any interest on the trade market for the Braves outfielder.

The Braves, who begin a three-game series in Philadelphia on Friday night, will not concede easily. But the Rockies continue to flirt with contention, reducing their chances of trading left fielder Matt Holliday. Over the next week, the demand for Teixeira might only build, leaving the Braves with the best hitter on the market.

I didn’t get the sense from conversations today that the Mark Teixeira rumors are grounded in much fact, but then again this was the team that came out of nowhere before last year’s deadline to make a big run at the slugging first baseman.

If the discussions involve Conor Jackson, they make no sense to me. Perhaps that’s a name that might have worked before he became a full-time outfielder, but dealing him now for Teixeira — not even considering the years of control you’d be losing vs. the draft picks you’d collect vs. the mostly negligible bump in production — just creates another hole in the lineup.

It still sounds like there’s almost no chance Max Scherzer or Jarrod Parker goes anywhere, so the only name that has enough value to build the deal around — and to where it would make sense for this season for the Diamondbacks — would be Chad Tracy, right?

It’s certainly fun to speculate on how much you should pay for two months of Teixeira plus two draft picks (because there’s no way the Diamondbacks could afford to re-sign him) — and, conversely, if you’re the Braves, how much you can expect to get in return — but, again, from what I could gather, there wasn’t much fire to the Teixeira smoke that’s out there.

    Of Terry Pendleton:

The Braves hit just .227 during a 7-12 stretch through Tuesday, and 21 of the meager 71 runs they scored in that stretch came in two games. They scored one or no runs in seven of the other 17. No one has been more frustrated by the offense’s malaise than hitting coach Terry Pendleton. “When we’re doing like we’re doing, absolutely [it’s frustrating],” said Pendleton, who watched his Braves muster just one hit — a Chipper Jones single — in Tuesday’s 4-0 loss to Florida, and fail to score after loading the bases with no outs on three consecutive walks in the fourth inning. “There’s games where we hit like we’re supposed to hit, and then there’s games where we don’t. There are days, like when I left here [Tuesday] night, where I’ve gone back to the hotel and I was like, ‘What is it? What is it? What can I do differently? What can they do differently? What can I do to assist them in doing differently?’ “I know it’s frustrating for the players, because they’re working so hard,” Pendleton said. “By the same token, we’ve got to find a way to get it done.”

Uh, get back with us on that one, would ya Terry? Preferably before October… 🙄

The thing about coaching is it is really teaching. Just because some of the kids can’t grasp the lesson does not necessarily mean the teacher is bad nor does it mean the kids are poor students, just sometimes they clash.

Been there and done that folks….

Sometimes a change of scenery is good for a lot of folks. I don’t think the current manager of the Mets is any better than Willie Randolph was but he happened to be in the right spot at the right time.

Now, I think the real problem was the tension between Willie and Omar.

😆 I know what you mean, Raisins! Everybody is writing but they’re all saying mostly the same thing.

    This one from Danny Knobler:
    http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/10904061

When the Braves traded for Mark Teixeira last July 31, they were 4½ games out of first place in the National League East, with two teams to pass. Now it’s almost a year later, and Atlanta is 6½ games out of first, with three teams to pass.

So do the Braves turn around and trade Teixeira, a pending free agent they admit they have almost no chance of re-signing for next year? Or do they keep Teixeira and try to win now?

Who wouldn’t want Tex? He has 35 homers, 128 RBI as a Brave. (AP)
Atlanta officials insist that no decision has yet been made, and that as of yet they haven’t offered Teixeira to anyone. They say that their inclination is to go for it, but they also admit that they’ve been making lists of possible Teixeira trading partners.

Boston is on the list, and so are the Angels and Rays. The Braves still think Arizona could become involved, too — if they put Teixeira on the market.

So will they? Check back at the end of the week.

The Braves play three games at Florida (while the Phillies play the Mets). Then the Braves play three games in Philadelphia.

By the end of the week, maybe the Braves will be back in it. Maybe they’ll be buying (looking for an outfield bat), rather than selling.

Or maybe they’ll be far enough out of it that they’ll admit what outsiders have already been thinking — that the Braves just aren’t good enough to win this year.

“When (closer John) Smoltz went down for the year, a malaise seemed to set in on that team,” one scout who closely follows the NL East said Sunday.

Incidentally, in the 154 games the Braves have played since acquiring Teixeira from Texas, he has 35 home runs and 128 RBI. And in those same 154 games, the Braves have gone 75-79.

They haven’t looked like a championship club. And they didn’t look like a championship club over the weekend, when they lost two of three at home to the Nationals.

If they don’t start looking like a championship club soon — i.e. this week — then it’s probably time to send Teixeira on his way.

    http://msn.foxsports.com/other/story/8377762/Fan-injured,-17-ejected-in-Ohio-baseball-brawl?CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=0

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) – A minor league pitcher accused of throwing a ball that hit a fan during a bench-clearing brawl was charged with felonious assault.

Peoria Chiefs pitcher Julio Castillo was arrested Thursday following the fight with the Single-A Dayton Dragons, authorities said Friday. Umpires ejected 15 players and the team’s managers following the 10-minute brawl.

Castillo, 21, was scheduled to be arraigned Friday, Montgomery County Jail officials said. Video from the game shows Castillo angrily throwing a ball, but doesn’t show where the ball landed.

The fan, who remains unidentified, was treated at Miami Valley Hospital and released, said hospital spokeswoman Nancy Thickel. She didn’t know the extent of the fan’s injuries.

The Dragons are affiliated with the Cincinnati Reds, while the Chiefs are affiliated with the Chicago Cubs.

Three Peoria batters were hit in Wednesday’s game between the clubs. After a Peoria player was hit in the top of the first on Thursday, Castillo hit two batters in the bottom half — one in the head. The second hit batsmen by Castillo, Angel Cabrerra, made an aggressive slide into second to break up a double play.

Castillo followed that by throwing his next pitch up-and-in, prompting Dayton manager Donnie Scott to complain to the home plate umpire. Interim Peoria manager Carmelo Martinez — filling in for Ryne Sandberg — came onto the field to join the discussion.

The two managers began arguing, and when Martinez pushed Scott, the benches emptied.

The teams protested the ejections by phone to Midwest League president George Spelius, saying they didn’t want pitchers playing in the outfield to complete the game. After an hour delay, the ejections were reversed and the game resumed. Dayton won 6-5.

Spelius said Friday that he spoke to the umpires about the brawl. He said he needs to read a report, review video footage and talk to team officials before any possible sanctions.

Chiefs spokesman Nathan Baliva said Spelius will handle the issue.

“He’ll hand down the appropriate punishments he deems necessary,” Baliva said.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty witnessed the fight from the stands. Cincinnati spokesmen Rob Butcher said Friday neither the Reds nor the Dragons would comment.

Sandberg was in Cooperstown, N.Y., for the weekend’s Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.

Aaron Brown, a fan seated near home plate, said the fight marked a sad day for baseball.

“I’ve never seen anything like it before,” Brown said. “You see paramedics running into the stands. Just when you think it ends, there is another group trying to fight.

“I was really surprised they continued the game.”

Best way I know to ruin a child is to give them everything they want. Having to work and sacrifice for something gives one an appreciation for the fruit of their labors.

Question, why is it always white folks who are doing the volunteer work on “Extreme Makeover”?

Okay, enough social comment for today… Except this bit of commentary…

When Obama made his speech yesterday campaigning for the office of President of the World, did anyone of the major news networks happen to mention that the reason for the huge crowds was the free concerts? Really, I don’t mind that the networks are on his campaign staff, I just wish they wouldn’t be so obvious about it…

    Okay, off my soapbox now…

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs called up right-hander Jeff Samardzija from Triple-A Iowa on Friday after placing closer Kerry Wood on the disabled list with a blister on his right index finger.

I don’t think I’ve ever known anyone to go on the DL for a blister before.

I doubt they would put him on the DL if he was a starter but as a closer I think the Cubs are fearful of being shorthanded.

CL, Josh Beckett used to have severe problems with blisters….and went on the DL for them. He’s been having problems with it for weeks, if not a month…they just won’t heal.

Not the biggest fan of sweet Lou the person, but he can make some smart moves as a manager….

“He’s stretched out,”[right-hander Jeff Samardzija] Piniella said. “We can use him about any way we want, but I think the best way is to get him in the middle of the ballgame and if he’s pitching well, we can get him a little longer.”

Bobby would stick him in the right in the middle of the bottom of the 9th, with the bases loaded! 🙄

Garsh(Disney reference!)…it’s been hard to bash Bobby of late, what with the offense being so anemic….I missed it! 🙂

Ha! Never noticed it was an Ump CL, I feel 😳

Terry Pendleton was a hacker, wasn’t he??? Probably not the best guy to be a hitting coach….for some reason, I could see him being a tougher manager than Bobby….I don’t know….from Gil’s earlier post on Pendleton…

“There are days, like when I left here [Tuesday] night, where I’ve gone back to the hotel and I was like, ‘What is it? What is it? What can I do differently? What can they do differently? What can I do to assist them in doing differently?’”

Gosh, I don’t know….have them do what the most successful teams in the game do now, grind out AB’s??? Be very patient???? Watch the Yankees and Red Sox games???

Suggest they take the ball to the opposite field for at least one AB a night???

But, what does and idiot worm know??? 😛

Bear, uh…worm… uh, Berm? All these blister problems could be an after effect from the steroid era. Finger skin, uh, breakdown. Or maybe just not enough pickle juice in the dugout. Glavine should have some extra brine stashed around somewhere.

Gil you’ve been on a roll. 3:24 spot on.

The extreme makeover link was pretty incredible. I remember seeing that on TV. They need another extreme makeover… of the ‘living beyond means’ and the ‘borrowing while knowing you can’t pay back’ variety.

Maybe that’s a new show idea for HGTV, with the mortgage debacle… “The Upside Down and Out”. Or maybe, “When the Flippin’ House Don’t Flip”.

I don’t know, seemed pretty tame to me as far as baseball fights go. I am sure the fan who was struck by the baseball was not the intended target, just another innocent bystander hit by a stray bullet. Of course if the pitcher had control, he would not have hit the batter to begin with.

Guess we have different definitions of tame. Maybe the article overplayed it. Or maybe the fan that saw the paramedics running into the stands was not so experienced in teams fighting… just another day at the park in Mechanicsville.

Uh, pass the peanuts and Cracker Jack… and watch the right hook honey. Hey, another beer over here! Uh, now the paramedic’s in my way. Haven’t they seen blood before? Ho hum… another bench clearing brawl. Let’s get hot dogs.

CL, I woke up to watch pitch the 8th(No joke, I Dreamt the braves were down 8-0) and see Jurrjens was clearly pitching the game of his young career and 3 amazing defensive plays in that bottom inning alone! More good ones before, I can safely assume???

Then, a leadoff double, a beautiful bunt for a hit by Blanco(He should teach it for the whole organization) I forget, a walk by Yunel, a big single by Tex to drive in the 2nd run of the game. Then the big blast….I have to say, I am absolutely shocked to see this from the team right now!!! Pleasantly surprised.
