Jefferson, GA – Yes, today I stand before you to talk about the issues. No beating around the bush (no pun intended) here. I’ll go straight to the heart of the matter. Let’s get to it, huh?
Economic Policy: The economy is on everyone’s mind right now, especially with the big losses recently felt in the New York markets. Yes, no New York team in the playoffs this year. Surely, though, given the current economy of Major League Baseball, those losses will begin to reverse. No bailout needed here. The pure free market economics of the sport will prove to rise above the critics as the New York teams outspend everyone else this offseason, making it difficult for the Middle Class teams to get ahead. Of course, as the Rays have proven this season, dumping good money after bad is not necessarily the answer. Judicious spending, and wise choices, always are the keys to surviving in the new age economy. We must take this lesson to heart.
National Defense Policy: I believe whole-heartedly in a strong National defense. Of course, you have to win the National League before you can defend it. I believe with a good economic approach, including the aforesaid judicious spending and wise choices, we soon could find ourselves once again defending the National League.
Health Care Policy: This year, a strong Health Care position has become a prominent part of shaping one’s platform. I believe in Health Care for everyone, and fully intend to make sure that the training room is accessible at all times. Dr. James Andrews phone number is, as always, prominently posted on the team bulletin board. Specifically, though, I believe in a more preventative approach. I believe in better offseason training and stretching. I believe that March 1st is too late to start. I believe that elite professional athletes should keep the tools of their trade, their bodies, in shape year round. I believe that, in the case of health related matters, less is more.
Foreign Policy: I believe that we should have a strong foreign policy. Whether it be in Central America, South America, the Dominican Republic, Canada, etc. I, for one, am happy that we are venturing into the Japanese market. We must, however, make sure we operate within the negotiated rules, lest we damage our relationship with our Far East brothers.
Energy Policy: I believe in alternative energy sources, as long as they are approved by Major League Baseball. No PEDs here. We have an abundance of natural energy resources, though, if our players will just take that initiative. Fruits, vegetables, complex carbohydrates, etc. are all excellent fuel choices when used efficiently and wisely.
Homeland Security Policy: We must play better baseball at home. No doubt about it. If you can win 2 out of 3 at home, and split on the road, you will win 95 games and find yourself in the playoffs.
Trade Policy: This is an area of great concern and great discussion this offseason. Obviously, coupled with the Economic issues we face, our Trade Policy has to be one that is not only attractive to our Trade partners, but maintains our own supply integrity as well. The former Trade Czar was masterful in this area.
Education Policy: I believe that no player should be left behind. All players not only should, but must have access to the finest instruction, by qualified instructors. Any instructors deemed unqualified should be summarily dismissed. Unfortunately, Terry Pendleton will return for the 2009 campaign. I am currently huddling with my advisers over this development. Secondly, all players not only should, but must have access to the teams video and tape library, as well as the “book” on pitchers and hitters throughout the league. Our players must engage themselves in proper preparation for whichever new team they encounter. To me, there is no excuse for lack of proper preparation. Those who cannot meet the mark could find themselves expelled. Just ask Jason Marquis.
Immigration Policy: I am all for legal immigration. I believe in extending opportunity to all who seek it legally. To those who come into our country illegally, if you can chuck it 95mph+ or rake like Rod Carew, I’ll find you a good lawyer…and an agent.
Agriculture Policy: This hearkens back to the very fundamentals of developing a strong organization. To build a strong team, there must be a strong farm system in place. This team has a strong farm system, but the new harvest is not yet at hand. Oh, there’ll be a couple of ripe ones to pop up early, but the real bounty is still a couple of years away. Names like, Heyward, Freeman, Hanson, Medlen, Hernandez and Hicks. The future is indeed a bright one, as long as we do not allow the plague of impatience to ravage what could be a bumper crop.
Domestic Affairs Policy: They are wrong. Period. Marriage is sacred, even though a lot of players seem to forget that sometimes on those long road trips. Of course, it’s not like this is the NBA or anything…
View of the Current Administration: The current administration is under a tremendous amount of criticism right now. Even though there are many positive points racked up over the last several years, many seem to lock in and focus on the recent failures, some of which admittedly exist. However, remember that mistakes made in the 9th inning are always magnified more than successes found in the 1st inning, and that the media doesn’t always paint an accurate picture.

And one comment on the Phillies’ W/S victory… Although I was rooting for the Rays (father/son thing) I was not too disappointed as the Phanatic deserves a ring. I hope the team votes him a share because he is the best mascot in baseball today. The only other mascot who is on the same level is the old San Diego Chicken…
The Phanatic is almost worth the price of admission by himself. Of course the Phillie fans themselves are insufferable but that is another story… At least it was not the Mutts…

Nationals give Corrales, White new jobs
WASHINGTON — Less than a month after firing Pat Corrales as their bench coach, the Washington Nationals are making him a special consultant to general manager Jim Bowden.
Washington also announced Wednesday that former major league outfielder Devon White will be a special assistant for player development. White was the Nationals’ roving outfield coordinator last season.
The 67-year-old Corrales was manager Manny Acta’s bench coach the past two seasons. Most of Acta’s coaching staff was removed on the last day of the regular season.

The Braves and Padres remain at an impasse in their trade discussions concerning right-hander Jake Peavy, sources say.
The Padres are believed to be asking for five players, knowing the Braves parted with that many when they acquired first baseman Mark Teixeira and left-hander Ron Mahay from the Rangers.
Of course, the players and combinations remain fluid, and the final package could hinge on whether the Braves take back shortstop Khalil Greene as a replacement for Yunel Escobar, who likely would be included in the deal.
For the moment, the Braves remain opposed to trading Class AA right-hander Tommy Hanson, who has pitched 8 2/3 scoreless innings in the Arizona Fall League and could be in the Atlanta rotation next season.
The Padres’ discussions with other clubs about Peavy also are quiet, but the talks are certain to resume next week at the general managers’ meetings in Dana Point, Ca. –Ken Rosenthal

After being out on the campaign trail in Florida with all the candidates he was prolly just wanting some normalcy and good home cookin’ before heading back to the coast. He’s s’posed to be filing some political reports soon. Either way, that Fly has some ‘splainin’ to do when he gets back here.

And Sarah is coming to Richmond yet again Saturday night. I think I will sit this one out though, Just too much standing around waiting for a 15 minute speech. I will send the money ahead anyway. I am going to volunteer to drive folks (republicans) to the polls to vote Tuesday. We all have to do what we can.
Hanover County has approximately 67,000 registered voters. It is the norm for 95% to vote at any presidential election so this one should be no different. It’s hard to find someone who is not a registered voter in this county, a fact not lost on our local Board of Supervisors. Demographics has our population at about 92% white. 8% black. I will be very surprised if Obama gets more than 15% of our votes.
So, it’s all good….

WASHINGTON — Seeking to buttress the foreign policy credentials of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, Republicans have repeatedly cited the vice presidential nominee’s experience as commander of the Alaska National Guard.
As governor, Palin oversees military units whose duties include serving overseas, search-and-rescue missions across the state’s vast landscape and manning key elements of the U.S. missile defense system at Ft. Greely.
But foreign deployments of Guard units and the operation of national defense assets like the Ft. Greely missile interceptors are not the responsibility of state governors. Those functions come under the regular U.S. military chain of command.
Commanding the Alaska National Guard is hardly an insignificant job, military officials say. Still, they acknowledge that it provides little, if any, foreign policy experience.
Overseeing a state Guard is a “chief executive role” with real management responsibilities, said Mark Allen, a spokesman for the National Guard Bureau, the federal office that coordinates state National Guards.
“I don’t think people should think it is a casual relationship, or is like the king putting on the medals,” Allen said. “It is not that at all. But the role of the governor is to use the Guard to help the citizens of a state, as opposed to declaring war on a neighboring state.”
The Alaska National Guard is unusual in that its jobs include manning part of the U.S. missile defense system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion works on interceptor missiles designed to shoot down intercontinental missiles.
Members of the Alaska National Guard also were deployed to Iraq, and Palin visited their unit in July 2007. The McCain campaign has pointed to that experience as an example of Palin’s foreign policy background.
“She’s been the commander of Alaska’s National Guard, who’s been deployed overseas,” Tucker Bounds, a McCain spokesman, said on CNN in one of several recent references to Palin’s gubernatorial responsibility for the Guard. “That’s foreign policy experience.”
Since governors have no role in overseeing Guard members federalized for service in Iraq, military experts said that should not count as foreign policy experience.
National Guard officials said visits such as Palin’s trip to Iraq may be important because state officials can lobby the federal government for better training and more equipment if they are needed. There is no indication that during her trip Palin found major problems with how the Alaska Guard was trained or equipped.
Closer to home, the bread-and-butter duties of most state National Guards are natural disasters. During Palin’s 21 months in office, there has been one declared disaster: widespread flooding in June and July this year. Palin quickly signed a disaster declaration, officials said. The Guard’s role was limited to providing two water tanks and 30,000 sandbags to local authorities.
The Alaska Air National Guard, with 1,946 service members, is involved in an exceptional number of search-and-rescue missions. Since Palin became governor in December 2006, the Air Guard has flown 521 missions, saving 200 lives and assisting with the rescue of 77 more people, said Kalei Brooks, a spokeswoman for the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
“Our rescue squadron is the busiest in the nation,” she said.
In recent years, the department has overseen a reorganization of the 1,900-member Army National Guard. Following a U.S. Army restructuring plan, officials have helped assign soldiers to new units.
But training requirements for Guard units are established not by governors, but by the Army, the Air Force and the National Guard Bureau.
“That requirement comes down from the United States Army and Air Force,” Allen said. “But that training and that equipment become very important when they are needed within the states.”

Well, I haven’t been whining about my health or lack thereof here(others have heard about it though! 🙄 ) but kind of got sicker again…really, really having trouble sleeping. Seems I need to breathe while sleeping, and when I get sick that doesn’t happen. Anyway…slept 2 hours last night, but it was warmer today, so I decided it was my best/only shot at voting, in a heavily African-American country. (About the opposite of Gil’s numbers)
Anyway, I only had to wait in line for about an hour, and had a nice talk with a older gentleman about Johnny Carson, Clint Eastwood, etc….
And I have voted! Wish I had done it back in September, which I could have…didn’t know about it though….

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick talked to A.J. Burnett’s agent Darek Braunecker, who says his client will make his opt-out decision prior to the start of Monday’s GM meetings. We all know Burnett is opting out, of course.
Crasnick believes Burnett and Derek Lowe will seek salaries of at least $16MM per year. He names the Yankees, Mets, Rangers, Red Sox, Orioles and Nationals as potential suitors for Burnett. The Blue Jays will remain in the mix as well.

Trade anyone except Chipper. Keep Hampton. Keep Glavine if his arm is good and Smoltz if he can use the shoulder. Keep the good pen and lose Soriano. Lose Chuck James. There… I’m done.

Dear Mr. Obama,
It is August 30, 2008. My name is Mark Gregg. I am a 50 something conservative white male. I have followed your campaign closely, including the speeches you and others made at the democratic national convention. I am respectfully providing you with seven simple (probably shallow) reasons why I could never vote for you. I believe my opinion is shared by many people. While there may not be quite enough to prevent you from becoming president of this nation, I do think there is an awakening to the fact that you are not a (the) messiah that the media and liberal Hollywood entertainers are trying to portray you.
1. I hear your mantra of change, change, change. Yet, you picked a long term, liberal, Washington insider (Joe Biden) to be your running mate. This is NOT change. It is a move that hypocritically refutes the very thing you supposedly stand for. Your campaign then slammed McCain for picking Sarah Palin, apparently, because she is NOT a Washington insider. She is a maverick who cleaned-up Alaska ‘s quagmire of political scandals. Which way is it, Barack? Is it okay for you to pick a Washington insider under the mantra of change, but not okay for John McCain to pick a smart, aggressive, reformer?
2. You have the single most liberal voting record in the senate. This indicates to me and others like me that you may very well be an angry black man seeking to punish our country for sins of a different generation. I am not racist. I have some biases just like you and every other human alive. Unlike the democratic party who claims to be for the minority (but their record heavily refutes this), I will give any person who truly needs help, help. I married a minority girl 35 years ago (she is Hispanic) and have seen the evils of prejudice first hand. However, I have also seen my wife and my children and others in her family throw off the veil of self imposed prejudicial bondage and move ahead. They love our country and do not view themselves any different than I view myself as a citizen of this country. Your lovely wife so disappointed people like me during this campaign when she stated it was the first time she had ever been proud of this country. She apparently never noticed the massive aid we give dozens of other countries. She apparently never noticed the sacrifice of literally millions of veterans who helped make this country a free nation and helped liberate other nations from brutal dictators such as Adolf Hitler. She apparently does not remember that she attended ivy league universities with scholarship money that ultimately (at least some of it) was paid for by our taxes.
This troubles me more than you know. She is an angry black woman who appears to not like her country very much. I don’t want her representing me to the rest of the world.
3. You claim Christianity but apparently do not realize that the Bible teaches that he who does not work, does not eat. The Bible does not say or even suggest that he who CANNOT work, should not eat. Yet, your liberal policies reward people who are capable of working, but choose to not do so. This bothers me. I know that if you are elected our taxes will spiral upwards. You should heed the words of Winston Churchill: We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle. If I like anything about you, it is your campaign promise to balance the federal budget. Unfortunately, we have heard this a huge number of times from a number of different politicians and we realize that when you energize the very liberal Nancy Pelosi, Robert Byrd, Ted Kennedy, etc, etc, and the many other Democrats like them, a balanced budget will never, ever happen on your watch.
4. During your question and answer session with Rick Warren of Saddleback Church your answer concerning the question of where does life begin, stunned me: Above your pay grade? Does this mean when something bad happens as President of this nation that you are going to look at your salary to determine if you can respond? I am sorry, but this was the most serious gaffe I have seen you make. Frankly, it shows me that you are pandering in the most obvious manner. You will choose your
words not from your heart, but from an agenda that I believe is still hidden from the American people.
5. If anything stands out about you it is probably your appeasement mentality. In this era of rampant, radical Islamic extremism and with the latest stunt pulled by the re-energized Russian government, I am not sure appeasement is healthy. I again revert to the words of Winston Churchill: An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.
6. You and your party tacitly believe that a 13 or 14 year old girl must have the parents approval to have the school nurse provide them with a Tylenol when they have a headache at school. Yet, this same girl can become pregnant and the school can skirt her off to a clinic and abort the child in her body without the parents knowing or being notified. This scares the hell out of me. You have two little girls. Would you be upset if this happened to them and you were not informed? Then why do you stand for this? It makes no sense to me.
7. My seventh and final point (for now) is your supporters. I have watched the Hollywood entertainers that support you, systematically embrace Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and others like him. I see the continuous smut and garbage produced by Hollywood, the very people who promote you the most vigorously. It is not a positive point to me and others like me to see these over-paid, bizarre, poor examples of human existence fawn over you and push you and your liberal agenda as hard as they do. The way that I see it; When the devil is for you, we should question whether or not we should be against you.
In closing, I just want you to know that you scare me. I cannot vote for you. It is not because of your skin color. It is because these items and many, many others like them. Do not claim that my dislike for you is race based. It is because I do not feel you have the best interests of this nation at heart.

I don’t think there are really any undecided voters left, I think there are a lot of conflicted voters… Some folks will get to the polls, see the long lines and say.. Oh hell no.. and go to the local watering hole and tell everybody there that this country is going to he** in a hand basket.
Others will pull the lever and then sway for the next four years they voted for the other guy… After all, no one likes to admit they were wrong… Same reason a lot of folks don’t want to go to church.
No one wants to be made to feel bad…. I may not watch TV for 6 months after this election myself. Baseball won’t come too soon for me.. One thing for sure, if the one is elected, the bowling alley is history and the basketball court will be in…
By the way, I did relent and actually did some outside work today. Like every good southerner, I know it is important to keep up appearances for the neighbors… 🙂 And my 401K made a slight recovery today. Glad I diversified… still think I should have bought the Vette… Was waiting til Oct 15 so I would avoid the penalty… Woohoo, was I smart or what.? 😦

I am reading this news this morning:
Obama friend and political ally Bill Ayers wrote a book/manual in the late 1960s, called “Prairie Fire: The Politics of Revolutionary Anti-Imperialism.” The book has been called an American version of the Communist Manifesto.
Now a rare old copy has just been discovered. A Jewish Blog called Boker tov Boulder (Good morning), has a copy of the front cover and a summary.
In the dedications, Ayers includes the name of Sirhan Sirhan, the Palestinian murderer of Bobby Kennedy.
The Intro includes:

Good morning all… Getting ready to go see my mom this morning. Folks should remember that if anyone were to actually announce they were a socialist or a communist they would never get elected. Therefore one must look past the camouflage and see who has been an influence on their thinking. Well, the normal watchdog of the people, the press, who would normally alert us to such associations has let us down.
It’s been a long time coming, but the left has finally managed to keep their true colors hidden from view. Now, you folks know that I have been a strong advocate of unions, that does not however mean I was a strong advocate of giving up and individuals choice of belonging to one. I always worked for people to show them the benefits of belonging to a union, not bully them into joining.
People who are not held accountable for their actions will take more and more liberties with the rules.

The NY POST, WASHINGTON TIMES and DALLAS MORNING NEWS have all been told to move out by Sunday to make room for network bigwigs — and possibly for the inclusion of reporters from two black magazines, ESSENCE and JET, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.
Despite pleas from top editors of the three newspapers that have covered the campaign for months at extraordinary cost, the Obama campaign says their reporters — and possibly others — will have to vacate their coveted seats so more power players can document the final days of Sen. Barack Obama’s historic campaign to become the first black American president.

Civil war, right. Well, I guess we’ve survived Erica Jong’s civil war between men and women, so what’s worse than that?
That article just shows how completely out of touch and delusional people like Jane “Dumberella” Fonda and Erica “Hysterica” Jong are. “Bundle of nerves”… right. Methinks those symptoms point more to their own dementia, prescription meds and bloated egos than any political beliefs they might have. Throw insomnia and those body aches, obsessive fretting and such and it doesn’t take a mail-order psychoanalyst to deduce that it’s probably their inability to, uh, be satisfied with, um, any comforting touch by another human being other than a manicurist’s hand.
Hopefully I avoided the doghouse with that prognosis. 😀

Well, my laptop crashed this morning… It made a few weak tapping sounds and poofF – DRT (Dead Right There). Now I have a new big, flat paper-weight. Bad new since I work from it. I am making do with some older stuff. Translation: older = alot slower 😦

Ber.. I worked as a Union organizer… I know how you can browbeat people into doing things the normally would not. That said, taking away the secret ballot would be horrible. Trust me, when a company faces going union, there are plenty of dirty tricks on all sides. Want ot assure a big union, treat people badly and act haughty and callous.
Over and over in my life I have reminded people that just because they can do something it does not mean they should. Unfortunately, far too many folks take the selfish route and do whatever they please and care not about the consequences. My dad always told me to leave something on the table in all my negotiations because to do otherwise deprives a man of his dignity and once someone is humiliated, they will become your sworn enemy for life.

Cory Miller – The Well Driller
Mr. Obama,
Given the uproar about the simple question asked you by Joe the
plumber, and the persecution that has been heaped on him because he
dared to question you, I find myself motivated to say a few things to
you myself. While Joe aspires to start a business someday, I already
have started not one, but 4 businesses. But first, let me introduce
myself. You can call me ‘Cory the well driller.’ I am a 54 year old
high school graduate. I didn’t go to college like you, I was too
ready to go ‘conquer the world’ when I finished high school. 25
years ago at age 29, I started my own water well drilling business at
a time when the economy here in East Texas was in a tailspin from the
crash of the early 80’s oil boom. I didn’t get any help from the
government, nor did I look for any. I borrowed what I could from my
sister, my uncle, and even the pawn shop and managed to scrape
together a homemade drill rig and a few tools to do my first job. My
businesses did not start as a result of privilege. They are the
result of my personal drive, personal ambition, self discipline, self
reliance, and a determination to treat my customers fairly. From the
very start my business provided one other (than myself) East Texan a
full time job. I couldn’t afford a backhoe the first few years
(something every well drilling business had), so I and my helper had
to dig the mud pits that are necessary for each and every job with
hand shovels. I had to use my 10 year old, 1/2 ton pickup truck for
my water tank truck (normally a job for at least a 2 ton truck).
A year and a half after I started the business, I scraped together a
20% down payment to get a modest bank loan and bought a (28 year)
old, worn out, slightly bigger drilling rig to allow me to drill the
deeper water wells in my area. I spent the next few years drilling
wells with the rig while simultaneously rebuilding it between jobs.
Through these years I never knew from one month to the next if I
would have any work or be able to pay the bills. I got behind on my
income taxes one year, and spent the next two years paying that back
(with penalty and interest) while keeping up with ongoing taxes. I
got behind on my water well supply bill 2 different years (way behind
the second time… $80,000.00), and spent over a year paying it back
(each time) while continuing to pay for ongoing supplies C.O.D. Of
course, the personal stress endured through these experiences and
years is hard to measure. I do have a stent in my heart now to
memorialize it all.
I spent the next 10 years developing the reputation for being the
most competent and most honest water well driller in East Texas . 2
years along the way, I hired another full time employee for the
drilling business so that we could provide full time water well pump
service as well as the well drilling. Also, 3 years along the path,
I bought a water well screen service machine from a friend, starting
business # 2. 5 years later I made a business loan for $100,000.00
to build a new, higher production, computer controlled screen service
machine. I had designed the machine myself, and it didn’t work out
for 3 years so I had to make the loan payments without the benefit of
any added income from the new machine. No government program was
there to help me with the payments, or to help me sleep at night as I
lay awake wondering how I would solve my machine problems or pay my
bills. Finally, after 3 years, I got the screen machine working
properly, and that provided another full time job for an East Texan
in the screen service business.
2 years after that, I made another business loan, this time for
$250,000.00, to buy another used drilling rig and all the support
equipment needed to run another, larger, drill rig. This provided
another 2 full time jobs for East Texans. Again, I spent a couple of
years not knowing if I had made a smart move, or a move that would
bankrupt me. For the third time in 13 years, I had placed everything
I owned on the line, risking everything, in order to build a
business.
A couple of years into this, I came up with a bright idea for a new
kind of mud pump, a fundamentally necessary pump used on water well
drill rigs. I spent my entire life savings to date (just
$30,000.00), building a prototype of the pump and took it to the
national water well convention to show it off. Customers immediately
started coming out of the woodworks to buy the pumps, but there was a
problem. I had depleted my assets making the prototype, and nobody
would make me a business loan to start production of the new pumps.
With several deposits for pump orders in hand, and nowhere to go, I
finally started applying for as many credit card as I could find and
took cash withdrawals on these cards to the tune of over $150,000.00
(including modest loans from my dear sister and brother), to get this
3rd business going.
Yes, once again, I had everything hanging over the line in an effort
to start another business. I had never manufactured anything, and I
had to design and bring into production a complex hydraulic machine
from an untested prototype to a reliable production model (in six
months). How many nights I lay awake wondering if I had just made
the paramount mistake of my life I cannot tell you, but there were
plenty. I managed to get the pumps into production, which
immediately created another 2 full time jobs in East Texas . Some of
the models in the first year suffered from quality issues due to the
poor workmanship of one of my key suppliers, so I and an employee
(another East Texan employed) had to drive across the country to
repair customers’ pumps, practically from coast to coast. I stood
behind the product, and made payments to all the credit cards that
had financed me (and my brother and sister). I spent the next 5
years improving and refining the product, building a reputation for
the pump and the company, working to get the pump into drill rig
manufacturers’ product lines, and paying back credit cards. During
all this time I continued to manage a growing water well business
that was now operating 3 drill rig crews, and 2 well service crews.
Also, the screen service business continued to grow. No government
programs were there to help me, Mr. Obama, but that’s ok, I didn’t
expect any, nor did I want any. I was too busy fighting to make
success happen to sit around waiting for the government to help me.
Now, we have been manufacturing the mud pumps for 7 years, my
combined businesses employ 32 full time employees, and distribute
$5,000,000.00 annually through the local economy. Now, just 4 months
ago I borrowed $1,254,000.00, purchasing computer controlled
machining equipment to start my 4th business, a production machine
shop. The machine shop will serve the mud pump company so that we
can better manufacture our pumps that are being shipped worldwide.
Of course, the machine shop will also do work for outside companies
as well. This has already produced 2 more full time jobs, and 2 more
should develop out of it in the next few months. This should work
out, but if it doesn’t it will be because you, and the other
professional politicians like yourself, will have destroyed our
countrys’ (and the world) economy with your meddling with mortgage
loan programs through your liberal manipulation and intimidation of
loaning institutions to make sure that unqualified borrowers could
get mortgages. You see, at the very time when I couldn’t get a
business loan to get my mud pumps into production, you were working
with Acorn and the Community Reinvestment Act programs to make sure
that unqualified borrowers could buy homes with no down payment, and
even no credit or worse yet, bad credit. Even the infamous, liberal,
Ninja loans (No Income, No Job or Assets). While these unqualified
borrowers were enjoying unrealistically low interest rates, I was
paying 22% to 24% interest on the credit cards that I had used to
provide me the funds for the mud pump business that has created jobs
for more East Texans. It’s funny, because after 25 years of turning
almost every dime of extra money back into my businesses to grow
them, it has been only in the last two years that I have finally made
enough money to be able to put a little away for retirement, and now
the value of that has dropped 40% because of the policies you and
your ilk have perpetrated on our country.
You see, Mr. Obama, I’m the guy you intend to raise taxes on. I’m
the guy who has spent 25 years toiling and sweating, fretting and
fighting, stressing and risking, to build a business and get ahead.
I’m the guy who has been on the very edge of bankruptcy more than a
dozen times over the last 25 years, and all the while creating more
and more jobs for East Texans who didn’t want to take a risk, and
would not demand from themselves what I have demanded from myself.
I’m the guy you characterize as ‘the Americans who can afford it the
most’ that you believe should be taxed more to provide income
redistribution ‘to spread the wealth’ to those who have never toiled,
sweated, fretted, fought, stressed, or risked anything. You want to
characterize me as someone who has enjoyed a life of privilege and
who needs to pay a higher percentage of my income than those who have
bought into your entitlement culture. I resent you, Mr. Obama, as I
resent all who want to use class warfare as a tool to advance their
political career. What’s worse, each year more Americans buy into
your liberal entitlement culture, and turn to the government for
their hope of a better life instead of themselves. Liberals are
succeeding through more than 40 years of collaborative effort between
the predominant liberal media, and liberal indoctrination programs in
the public school systems across our land.
What is so terribly sad about this is this. America was made great
by people who embraced the one-time American culture of self
reliance, self motivation, self determination, self discipline,
personal betterment, hard work, risk taking. A culture built around
the concept that success was in reach of every able bodied American
who would strive for it. Each year that less Americans embrace that
culture, we all descend together. We descend down the socialist path
that has brought country after country ultimately to bitter and
unremarkable states. If you and your liberal comrades in the media
and school systems would spend half as much effort cultivating a
culture of can-do across America as you do cultivating your
entitlement culture, we could see Americans at large embracing the
conviction that they can elevate themselves through personal
betterment, personal achievement, and self reliance. You see, when
people embrace such ideals, they act on them. When people act on
such ideals, they succeed. All of America could find herself
elevating instead of deteriorating. But that would eliminate the
need for liberal politicians, wouldn’t it, Mr. Obama? The country
would not need you if the country was convinced that problem solving
was best left with individuals instead of the government. You and
all your liberal comrades have got a vested interested in creating a
dependent class in our country. It is the very business of liberals
to create an ever expanding dependence on government. What’s
remarkable is that you, who have never produced a job in your life,
are going to tax me to take more of my money and give it to people
who wouldn’t need my money if they would get off their entitlement
mentality asses and apply themselves at work, demand more from
themselves, and quit looking to liberal politicians to raise their
station in life.
You see, I know because I’ve had them work for me before. Hundreds
of them over these 25 years. People who simply will not show up to
work on time. People who just will not work 5 days in a week, much
less, 6 days. People always looking for a way to put less effort
out. People who actually tell me that they would do more if I just
would first pay them more. People who take off work to sit in
government offices to apply to get free government handouts (gee, I
wonder how things would have turned out for them if they had spent
that time earning money and pleasing their employer?). You see, all
of this comes from your entitlement mentality culture.
Oh, I know you will say I am uncompassionate. Sorry, Mr. Obama,
wrong again. You see, I’ve seen what the average percentage of your
income has been given to charities over the years of 2000 to 2004
(ignoring the years you started running for office – can you
pronounce “politically motivated”), you averaged less than 1%
annually. And your running mate, Joe Biden, averaged less than ¼% of
his annual income in charitable contributions over the last 10 years.
Like so many liberals, the two of you want to give to the needy, just
as long as it is someone else’s money you are giving to them. I
won’t say what I have given to charities over the last 25 years, but
the percentage is several times more than you and Joe Biden…
combined (don’t you just hate goggle?). Tell me again how you feel
my pain.
In short, Mr. Obama, your political philosophies represent everything
that is wrong with our country. You represent the culture of
government dependence instead of self reliance; Entitlement
mentality instead of personal achievement; Penalization of the
successful to reward the unmotivated; Political correctness instead
of open mindedness and open debate. If you are successful, you may
preside over the final transformation of America from being the
greatest and most self-reliant culture on earth, to just another
country of whiners and wimps, who sit around looking to the
government to solve their problems. Like all of western Europe. All
countries on the decline. All countries that, because of liberal
socialistic mentalities, have a little less to offer mankind every
year.

Andruw Wants To Return To Atlanta

Jennifer Brett of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution talked to Dodgers outfielder Andruw Jones, who says he’d like to come back and play for the Braves again. It’s unclear from his quote whether Jones is campaigning to return to the Braves in 2009 or after that. It takes two to tango, however, and the Braves are probably looking for an outfielder who is not coming off a historically bad season. The Braves didn’t even offer Jones arbitration last year.
A few weeks ago, Jones said, “I’m an everyday guy or I need to move out.” However, he hasn’t formally requested a trade from the Dodgers. The 31 year-old is set to earn a $15MM salary next year. He’ll also receive $2.1MM of his signing bonus in ’09 and another $5MM in ’10.

The World Series is over, the confetti has been dropped and swept away, the victory parade is gone, the rings have been sized and the players that played the longest have all gone home.
After Tuesday another season will have ended. Barring dimpled chads, massive electronic voting booth meltdowns, substantial voter fraud, contested elections and recounts, the political campaigns will finally be over. Thankfully, we won’t be drilled any longer with non-stop, around the clock political ads, redundant speeches, never-ending polls, media prognostication and spin. Wednesday morning the sun will rise, the campaigns will be history, the elections will be over and the country will brace for a change.
The height of misery and polarization is a country going through a three-year political campaign, but at long last, it will be over in a few short days. Soon enough, we’ll find out if we have leaders in Washington that are social engineers with mortgage firms and financial institutions that continue to line their own greedy, power hungry pockets while screwing up the country.
What manner of change will be revealed in the first ninety days following the swearing in of the new Commander In Chief. By hump day next week, we’ll watch and learn first-hand just how the new President, the old Congress and Wall Street and the stock market will react. We’re about to find out whether we have a moderate “reformist” Republican to take the helm or a mysterious, ultra-liberal Democrat that, by the reasonable interpretation of his own words, would begin dismantling our capitalist system, eliminate free enterprise incentives and usher in socialist, redistributive “change”.
If Obama and a super-majority of Democrats win, they will have an unchecked majority control over the Federal government. We’re about to see whether national security, capitalism, freedom of speech and the Declaration of Independence will remain intact.
If you’re inclined to worry, you’ll have a menu of items to choose from, such as expanding secularism and continued removal of all references of God in government institutions and public places. You’ll have a broken health care system, the dumbing-down of America with government schools that replace education with Marxist indoctrination, redistribution of wealth with socialist tax policies, job decline, GDP decline, the economic crisis, the soon to be shrinking dollar, rising oil and gas prices.
You could also worry about hyperinflation, national security threats, terrorism, radical Islamists, global unrest, war, illegal immigration, rampant crime, an out of control judicial system that legislates from the bench, infrastructure disrepair, urban sprawl, pollution, along with a global warming movement that has more to do with economic and social jerrymandering than it has with anything weather related. If that were not enough, some will continue fretting about who will sign with the Braves.
If you’re not inclined to worry and fret, maybe it’s because you believe this is the best, most humanitarian and intelligent country in the world, regardless of our occasional missteps and mistakes. No matter what happens Tuesday or what happens with the economy or in the world, if it is God’s will, America will survive and thrive, good will triumph over evil, the sun will rise in the east, the world will continue to turn and father time will march ever forward, one second at a time. The earth and the clock won’t reverse their rotations.
On the other hand, the Braves will hopefully reverse their rotation. Wouldn’t want to go backwards and replay 2008 or start the new season without a good solid five arms on the roster.

I’ve never been a Loni Smith kind’a guy. Much prefer a natural woman without all the poofed up hair and makeup. Glasses… not an issue.
WKRP was on during a time when I rarely watched TV. Missed quite a bit of stuff over the years, particularly between 1970 and late 80’s. Just news, baseball, nature and history channel. Oh, and Floyd On Fish. Hilarious cooking show.

Good announcers are in short supply. Boog and Joe are mediocre. Boog might be better if he had another partner. Joe is terrible. Chip needs to just work for TBS or ESPN or the Cubs.
I have no idea who would be Skip’s replacement but whoever it is needs to have the gift of gab, a great knowledge of baseball and enough humor and quick wit to carry the show and not just read from a stat sheet.

Lemmer’s voice is irritating. What he says is good, but it needs to be run through a machine of some sort first.
I don’t know of any other announcer who stands out to me. Most I’ve heard on local broadcasts are like fingernails down a chalkboard.

Next Tuesdah, when ahm thah President elect of this countrah, the first thing ahm going to do is put togetha a civilian militarah. Mah trusted friend John Murtha will head up this organzation, since he has experience in the militaruh and he also understands the, uh, uh, ah, uh… the ah, uh, places that need real communitah change. He’ll start in his own communitah.
We will root out those that want to subvert our contrah. Our friends in the media will be appointed as a supportahve task force to go through miles of videotape to identify those that would cast aspersions on me or mah wife. If a citizen has said anything that can be construed as hate speech, bias against race, or other subversive talk, they will be contacted. This is not as some have already described, a police state action. Only rednecks and those that are too old and set in their ways will be rounded up and questioned by authorities.
We will have Ms. Huffington create a similar task force to comb through all blogs and websites to identify all that threaten this countrah by speaking out against me or mah administration.
Before my critics on Fox News jump all over this, just know that this is not going against freedom of speech. In fact, it is to protect the majority of our citizenry from those that have subversive and dangerous opinions.
Joining the militaruh task force for broadcast television will be Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann. They will co-chair the Fairness Doctrine, Part II. The news media pundits that have been hurting this great contrah by constantly criticizing me on television and radio will be discontinued. Those that have been hosts of dissenting programs will be removed from the air.
Due to difficult and unforeseen economic pressures, I’ve lowered the income for taxation to those families making more than fortah fahve thousand dollahs a year. My good friend Tony Rezco, from the private sector, has agreed to head this division up.
Heading up the new cabinet position of Community Services and Education will be my old friend William Ayers. Bill has quite a bit of experience in this arena and will be instrumental in bringing a revolution to education.
These are difficult and dangerous times in Americah. We can’t have continued personal attacks and mudslinging against me and the Progressive Democratic Party for this countrah to change in ways that are good for the people.
Gun crimes will not be permitted. Our new civilian militarah will confiscate all guns from citizens. We will check all Federal permits and gun store receipts to track down those among us that, for whatever reason, have possession of a dangerous weapon. This confiscation will be a small burden to the taxpayers, because all of the confiscated weapons will arm the civilian militaruh and will not have to be purchased.
All of these policies, investigations and shutdowns will make this countrah a better, more fair and more friendlah place to live and govern. Most of you will like this change. Some will not, but my job is to make sure Americah changes in ways that make us safer, more equal and more acceptable to the UN and the rest of the more intelligent and civilized world.

The more confident he becomes, the more he swaggers, prances and puts a “preacherly” oomph on some words. I think he really does see himself as a savior or something. Or a rock star or an NBA star. Yes, very little fire in McCain’s campaign… even less organization.
As I’ve said before, an Obama win may save conservatism in America. It would be a very bad turn left, off the course of common sense. Much repair and restoration will have to be done after an Obama Presidency. The legislative branch could take a generation to restore.
Republicans have become complacent. Republicans have basically become centrist Democrats… fat and happy, only concerned with the status quo and getting themselves enriched and re-elected. Like Democrats, most Republicans deserve to be booted from office.
Even well meaning conservatives have been absent. They probably never imagined that the most liberal senator in Washington would stand a slight chance at winning the White House. Now they have awakened at the 11th hour to see how that ultra-liberal may win.
Looking at the polls (with a pinch of salt) and reading about the dysfunctional ground game, anemic debates, weak campaign organization and air-ball advertisements, McCain’s supporters did too little to make a difference. Perhaps McCain’s entire career of poking his finger in the eye of conservatives has come back to haunt him… and bite us.
Maybe it’s too little, too late. Just as most Americans and most in our government ignored obvious terrorist threats to our country, it took 9-11 to wake us up. It may take an Obama Presidency to wake up, unite and fire up conservatives. That is, if there are enough conservatives left to run for office and enough citizens with conservative values to get out and elect them.
Not sure. We shall see in 48 hours.

Well… I am still a bit computer challenged at the moment, but I was able to sneak over for a minute.
According to published reports, Junichi Tazawa went unselected in the recent NPB draft, clearing the way for him to sign with an MLB organization. While official negotiations reportedly won’t start until Nov 24 or so, Tazawa is meeting with representatives from the Mariners and Braves on Tuesday.
Tazawa has a mid-90’s fastball with movement, a good curve and a biting slider. He owns an eye-popping 14:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

It has been pouring all day and tomorrow’s forecast is 90% chance of rain, temps in low 60s, wind 10-20mph – it will be a miserable, chilly day – and don’t think there are all that many who will stand in line for 8+ hours in those conditions.

SG… tell me about the Mac. Would it take long to accustom myself after being a PC user forever? Is it compatible with Word, Excel, etc.? If everybody else I work with uses a PC, would I have difficulty swapping documents, etc.?

I refused to run with the herd and upgrade to Vista because of the nightmare I went thru upgrading to XP… (code for eXPensive) because a lot of my old software was not compatible.
When I first started using a PC I though I had to have the latest Microsoft programs. Discovered all the hype was not to be believed. Example.. . Microsoft Office priced at about $589 for the full version, was hardly ever backwards compatible. Corell on the other hand was about $39 for the full version and worked both with older and newer versions….
So as far as the programs being interchangeable with others… Well, there is always the printer….

Raisins, years ago I was concerned about switching from PC to Mac, so I had our IT person set it up right beside my old PC. Since I was on the company server and intranet I needed him to do it. Ok, that’s not the main reason… I’m really a techno-idiot. 😳
Anyway, after one hour on the Mac (no kidding) I had them take my PC away to put it out of it’s misery. The Mac is completely intuitive and I recommend it to everyone except accountants. Everyone in my office uses the mac, not just the art directors and designers. I switched to a laptop years ago, when they first came out and have never been back. It goes everywhere I do.
No problem swapping email documents with PC’s, only the occasional issue of forwarding some PC-sent video or embedded color emails, although I could solve that easily but haven’t bothered. Microsoft software is used on all Macs for a number of years, so Microsoft not only compatible with Mac but comes already loaded on the machine… like Microsoft word, excel, powerpoint, etc.
You can do the books with Quicken or other accounting programs. The GUI is superior to PC also. There are far fewer software issues and “bugs, worms, viruses” and such. I’ve had none of those… for years.
Get on Safari of Firefox browser (I’m Safari) and you’re ready to rock. Plus, if you are an iTunes guy you’re really hooked up to catalog, organize and play your music. Add little speakers or hook up to your sound system at home. If you take digital photos, it’s a lot easier, more compatible, can retouch, file, mail, print, do any graphic your heart desires, etc.
Bottom line: They cost more but, if you like all the features it’s well worth it. More fun, less muss, less fuss. Plus, you be 😎
And no, I’m not an Apple salesman. 😀

Also, check with the dealer (a store at Lenox Mall) to see what software comes loaded. It’s possible my IT person just loads mine all up when I get’em.

Me like the iPod to surf the net, send emails and write reports. Less distance to jump between keys. Can do a whole report without taking a breather. Computers are just too big. Plus, I can watch my favorite movies, like Fly, Return of the Fly, A Bee’s Life… you know, the good stuff.

V, I got Vista in July with a new computer. No problems at all! You HAVE to have 2-3 Gig’s of RAM, or whatever they call it these days. Everything I read said most of the problems are from Vista being a memory hog, and if someone tried to get by on 1 Gig.
This Compaq says 500 GIG harddrive. Click on computer, it says 455 Gig’s and about 375 Free! Still plenty of room.
I have 3 Gig’s of RAM, with the ability to expand to 8 Gigs. I found no one at the store level would know how much expansion room there was!!! Online, I found out the info….my last Compaq was great, lasted 6 years, but…I couldn’t expand beyond 512 MB of RAM! 😡
As for interface, or whatever you want to call it….not all that different. My biggest complaint is the search function. It will search thru emails, when I am looking for a file or program.
Computer is MUCH faster starting up. Like one minute or less, and ready to go!

While I’m here, a quick report from the Obama War Room. All the usual suspects are in attendance. Trouble is brewing. Here’s what transpired:

MICHELLE: Put a sock in it Joe. From here out, you report to me. I need a decorator, a personal trainer, a new wardrobe and all that. Take notes.
BARAK: We need to get rid of all those old, stodgy portraits around there. Maybe put up some posters and paintings of international leaders in their place. People like Malcom X, Mao, Pol Pot, Che, Castro, Yassar. You know, the men who brought change… real change. Maybe we get a big UN banner for the lobby too. It’s time we joined the rest of the world.

Hmmm… if it were not for Mr. Fly’s accurate reporting on the Braves clubhouse, I’d find that Obama exchange a bit hard to believe. Incredible what goes on behind closed doors in the dark world of politics.
It must be true though, ’cause I just noticed a black limo with a “Truth Squad” sign on the door pull up in my driveway. Mr. Fly uses my home as his official address, so I wonder if they’re looking for him.

Fox News just reported on an incident at a polling station in Philadelphia, where Black Panthers were blocking the entrance (one of them holding a nightstick) and intimidating voters; police were called. According to a witness they were telling people, “A black man is going to win this election no matter what,” and, “White supremacy is over.” One of these Black Panthers is actually an official poll watcher.
When Fox News showed up, the Black Panthers started accusing them of voter intimidation.

A left-leaning San Francisco radio host who doubles as a columnist for the Huffington Post let loose an expletive-laden, on-air diatribe in which he called for the death of Joe the Plumber.
Toward the end of a segment on his weekend radio show on KGO in San Francisco, Charles Raymond Bouley Jr., more popularly known as Karel, shouted on air, “F— Godd— Joe the Godd— Mother F—ing Plumber! I want Mother F—ing Joe the Plumber dead!”
WND confirmed the remarks – captured and archived by the Radio Equalizer blog – were broadcast live on KGO.
Karel made the comments while the station was airing an ABC Radio news update which included audio of Sen. John McCain referring to criticism of Sen. Barack Obama’s economic policies by Joe the Plumber, or Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher, an Ohio plumber who has come to represent aspiring middle class Americans in the campaign debate.
Responding to an inquiry, Karel told WND today his remarks were made during what he thought was a break and were not meant for broadcast.

Man Parks Manure Near Democrats’ Campaign Office to Protest Obama
BUTTE, Mont.– Democrats are criticizing a 38-year-old man who parked a trailer load of manure across the street from Whitehall’s Democratic campaign office to protest presidential hopeful Barack Obama.
Terry Reed, who owns a construction and excavation company in Whitehall, parked the trailer near the office on Saturday. He also posted a sign in the manure mocking Obama’s “change we can believe in” slogan as “a load of crap.”
“I think Obama’s plan is just one big old poop sandwich and we’re all going to have to take a bite,” he said.
Suzanne Molyneaux, the Obama campaign’s election team leader in Whitehall, said traffic came to a near standstill as people stopped to take pictures of the trailer.
“People in Whitehall were upset, they were outraged,” she said. “I don’t think Whitehall should be represented as this podunk, ignorant community. There are lots of good people here.”
Reed said he doesn’t plan to move the trailer until after Election Day.
“My only regret is that I didn’t do something sooner,” he said.

It’s silly. Watching these political pundits is almost like watching a group of weather channel storm teams guessing where the hurricane is going to hit a week out. Or like a bunch of grown men sitting around a hot stove prattling on about a 2009 baseball lineup… so many fantasy scenarios, so many contortions about convoluted trades, so many prognostications yet so few scenarios actually occur… or are even close to reality.
Eventually, so many guesses made with the utmost confidence are proffered that someone, due to the simple laws of average, gets one right. They will boast afterwards, even if the correct call came after 200 incorrect calls.
Wonder if Al Franken will win in Minnesota? That’s no fantasy, that’s a bad joke.

The battle, perhaps a major war, is lost for conservatives… but in reality, that war of ideas and values was abandoned by Republicans that didn’t hold conservative values, over twenty years ago. Tonight, the formerly unthinkable outcome has occurred. There have been so many emails, so many articles, so many revelations about the troubling friends and associates of Barak Obama. There have been so many outrageous comments recently uncovered about this mysterious man from Hawaii by way of Chicago.
Tonight an old, pale, quirky man lost an election. McCain is a war hero by serving his country. His heroism was accentuated by his captivity by an enemy. This hero, who made a political living by playing alter-ego and antagonist to his own party, portrayed an old school politician in this campaign. John McCain lived by the political sword and died by it.
I’m assuming McCain was only doing what he could and as much as he could to win this election. His superficial, one dimensional approach to campaigning, his inability to touch a majority of Americans, his inability to articulate issues, his empty rhetoric, his dysfunctional organization and his brow beaten party has squandered every advantage and opportunity they’ve been given with their own brand of self-absorbed irrelevance at their most anemic point in a generation.
McCain was probably the least capable of the Republican candidates. McCain won the primary nomination due to a very bizarre alignment of the stars. Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee cancelled each other out of the race. Either one of them could have articulated the conservative agenda. Either could have won this election due to their ideas and, right or wrong, their youth and vitality. McCain looked and acted like an old, out of touch politician. There was nothing aspirational about him that would make anyone want to follow him.
Just now, as McCain was giving his concession speech, he looked more comfortable than he’s looked since he started this race. Perhaps he’s mre comfortable being the also ran. Maybe he’s more comfortable being the captive. Perhaps he’s more natural being a rebel to his own party.
President Bush placed an impossible burden on conservatives. Without Bush as the lame duck, the mismanaged war, the mismanaged economy, the weak McCain and the back to back Republican strikeouts, there is no way that a man like Barak Hussein Obama could possibly win the White House.
At the end of the day, the Republicans deserved to lose due to gross incompetence. That’s not to say the Democrats deserved to win… they simply owned the media and benefitted by the grand scheme of timing, media control, American dissatisfaction with Bush and the economy. The stranglehold on the media cannot be discounted as insignificant.
Today, America demonstrated how it has changed. New rules will now be in force. This change may last for a generation. It’s up to all of us. I’m not sure how many of “us” there are left, but I know that it is up to us to elect conservative values in two years. Will there be conservatives available to mount a challenge to the liberal stronghold? That remains to be seen.
I’ll pray that the next time we have a Republican candidate for President that he or she can touch the American people… and can talk. We haven’t seen that in a long, long time. Since Reagan. Sad but true.
Barak Hussein Obama is now coming on stage to accept his new position of global power. His wife, your new First Lady, is finally proud to be an American.
I’ll pray that Obama’s heart is touched by our Lord and he will be “changed” himself, to see, and lead, and feel responsible for the lives of Americans, the fairness of it’s citizens, our brave troops in harm’s way, the struggling freedom fighters of the world and the unborn children that cannot lobby for their own lives. I’ll pray that past actions will be merely mistakes of a politician while maturing into a leader with real, global power. I’ll pray that Obama sees the error of his ways and is lead to do the right thing.

Good morning friends… I knew Mac was doomed yesterday morning when I saw all those young first time voters at the polls yesterday. I dragged as many folks as I could to vote yesterday but Virginia has been invaded by too many left thinking carpetbaggers. Okay, the sun will still rise this morning…
We will see how it goes with the inmates running the asylum for four years. I suspect the pendulum will swing back…
Meanwhile, my hat is off to the guy, being able to play the media like that. Laughable were it not so sad. Let’s see if they turn on him.

I would rather the Braves go the free agent route than to trade away their future. Of course there is the “attitude factor” and Bobby Cox. Might that mean the end for Yunel in a Braves uniform?

I have not seen any of the young shortstops in the Braves system other than Lillibridge. Brent really took a step backwards last year. I just don’t understand how he did that. It is tough to put together a team that is the complete package. I guess that is why we have so few repeat champions.
I don’t look for the Yankees to come back to the fore anytime soon either. As long as they have a manager who regards young pitchers as cannon fodder, they will never make it back to the World Series.

Honestly, I am very ambivalent towards Yunel, so moving him creates no heartburn for me. Then again, I feel similarly towards Bobby Cox.
Signing Hampton is a must. 😯 Anyone surprised by that? Unless he gets bowled over by offers elsewhere, he’s ‘Braves first’…and his performance down the stretch was plenty acceptable.
I do want Peavy, for the right package. It’s becoming apparent that a rotation spot for Hanson is his to lose as well. Peavy, Jurrjens, Hampton, Hanson…not a bad start, which bids adieu to some combo of Morton, Reyes (really hope not), Escobar, Johnson…Lillibridge, etc.
I have little fear of trading some of the farm, as I’ve noted in the past…it’s currency, little more. Unless you get ‘top ten’ picks year-in, year-out, you don’t retain very many. Fifteen years of winning stripped the Braves of that ability.
I really do believe Escobar is key to keeping much of the key farm talent…and I don’t believe he’s the difference between winning and losing. His real value for the Braves came last off-season…he allowed Atlanta to bamboozle Detroit into taking Edgar (who I’d take back) for Jair. That’s how you use the farm…and perception!

I can’t find anything in your post that I disagree with. I will only add that I think the Braves really need to add Derek Lowe through FA as well. He is perfectly suited for Turner Field and could easily pitch 220+ innings, easing the burden on the bullpen.

It is a formidable rotation, and completely within the Braves’ reach.
Excellent observation that Yunel could be the piece that prevents Frank from raping the farm system. Yunel, Morton, Medlen and Flowers could probably get it done with Khalil Greene coming back in the deal. Yes, Greene is a step back offensively, but the Braves won big with Rafael Belliard. Bat him 8th and enjoy his above-average defense… especially with Lowe serving up all the ground balls.
Anybody else hear that KC is asking alot of questions about Frenchtoast at the meetings?

FLB, I have to say, you have been very classy during this whole political season. Something I am not used to from those on the left. Of course, those folks are really far left….pat yourself on the back, and I am sure that your parents had something to do with it as well! 🙂
Barack will be my president, unlike so many on the left that acted like Bush was never ever elected president. I won’t spend every waking moment of my life trying to destroy him. For my countries sake, I will hope he is as good as he thinks he is.
What bothers me most is the media’s desire to get him elected was so blatant! They dug harder into the past of Joe the Plumber and Sarah Palin, than Obama. I just hope he was a pragmatist, and realized Rev. Wright, terrorist, turned rehabilitated educator William Ayers, slumload Tony Rezko, etc, etc, etc, were just stepping stones.
Harry S. Truman was put into power by the KC mob, but turned on them…and somehow managed to live and become president….
I hope he’s not another Carter, that just wants level upon level of new government bureaucracy…I forever remember this silly example of what businesses had to go thru in the 70’s. OSHA(Occupational Safety & Health Administration) got so ridiculous at one point, an auto shop we went to had to put a sign above a bathroom that said…this is not an exit! This was a repair shop with a HUGE garage door,almost as wide as one side of the building that with running cars, had to stay open all day. But, there was a sign above a bathroom. A bathroom that had no door. They didn’t care about no door, but you had to put that sign up.
That is big, in your face government in a nutshell. Big government slows down, does not create new opportunities. Raising taxes(And he will, you can’t promise all he has without costs going up) does not grow the economy.

I can go for Lowe. And…consider this…Hudson returns late in the year to take some load off of Hanson. Also, I disagree Greene is an offensive liability…he has serious pop in his bat; last year was more aberation…at least I hope…and it would be good to a Clemson Tiger on the team (Frenchy coulda been one!). Oh wait, SG, I agree with much of what you said, but I don’t think McCain lost, as much as Obama won. People usually go for the slicker, younger package. McCain is miles ahead of George Bush, when it comes to thinking on his feet.
He and his handlers shouldn’t have gone with Ayers, when the connections were pretty weak, and instead should have pounded with Rev. Wright and Tony Rezko(never heard anything about him in ads, and he’s dirty)
But, as I said above, the press was flat out in love with Obama. I heard in recent weeks how media folks were bringing their families to Obama events, because they were “historic” . You don’t, you won’t do anything to harm someone you are so in bed with.
Old media is dying, and the bitter, gun clinging religious folks are not going to forget this….
2010 will be like 1994, only hopefully the republicans won’t be so full of themselves like they were then, that they will actually follow thru on what they said they were going to do….

2. Derek Lowe. He is 36, but in great shape, physically and mentally. He’s averaged 210 innings the past six years, is a world-class athlete and can get the Yankees and Red Sox into a bidding war. He is a better pitcher than when he left Boston after winning the series clinchers of the ALDS, ALCS and World Series in 2004.
3. Raul Ibanez. His 338 RBIs the past three years are more than Ramirez (311), Teixeira (336) or Vladimir Guerrero; he is a leader, a tremendous person and a legitimate middle-of-the-order bat. It’s nice that such a good person will get paid.
4. Adam Dunn. He is spending the winter at Athletes Performance Institute trying to get into the best shape of his career. The Diamondbacks liked him; they’re just not willing to spend the money, but they felt his on-base percentage and power and enjoyment of the pennant race were really good. Dunn wants to play for a contender, so Washington may be out.

1. We know Jake Peavy is out there, but after seeing Tommy Hanson in the Arizona Fall League, one scout says, “I can see why the Braves won’t put him in the Peavy deal. It likely will still happen, but replacing Hanson with Yunel Escobar and Jordan Schafer included will be difficult.”

Yes, will now let politics ebb for a while… Only will say “you know” once in a while to state the obvious… We gun toting, religious types are much more magnanimous than the commie flag waving types seen on TV in jubilation over Obama’s election. I truly hope he does a spectacular job and wish him great success for all our sakes…
Now more baseball. Even a stud like A.J. Burnett would be a great addition. I just don’t think Atlanta is willing to give up another sure fire future ace like Hanson and a load of other talent to boot. Want to see what happens when you trade all your talent for one player? Look at the Yankees. They are only able to overcome bad trades by spending like a drunken sailor on free agents. Something that did not work out very well for Baltimore either.
Sometimes all those superstars on the same team just don’t live up to expectations. Haven’t we seen that often enough in the past? Detroit was a prime example this year for under achievement. Of course having all those young pitchers show up with sore arms may have had something to do with it.

You are correct. The Braves have in fact made a multi-year offer to Junichi Tazawa. The gravy is that it is a MLB contract offer, which would make it guaranteed and would place him on the 40 man roster.

Ludwick…hmmm. Ankiel…double hmmm. Just think, if the Braves are caught in one of those 15-0 after 3-4 innings, let Ankiel pitch some innings, too! 😆 Can’t hurt…well, at least not the Braves. The batters…that’s another matter entirely.

Interestingly, in 2008, Ludwick made only 29 appearances in LF, but 124 in RF. Oh, and 14 in CF.

I’ve always liked Dempster. Paired with Will Ohman, the clubhouse would have quite the start to a band…VOR, they might want you in there, too!
Ludwick could be a surprisingly less inexpensive (I don’t use the word CHEAP for professional sports!) option in the OF.

According to a report I heard on radio this morning:
Led by Scott Boras, reps of this year’s FA’s are looking to get deals done PRIOR to January 1 because of the incoming Barack Obama presidency. Their goal is to get the deals done before January 1, and get more bonus money UP FRONT, and less yearly salary in an effort to lessen the huge tax burden that BO will impose upon the elite MLB players. They are seeking to have as great an amount of the players’ income count against their 2008 income as possible.
I wonder how the MLBPA lobbied in the election…

Francoeur and Johnson trade talks
Numerous reports coming out of the General Manager Meetings indicate the Braves are talking to teams about the possibility of trading Kelly Johnson and Jeff Francoeur, who are both entering their first arbitration-eligible season.
With Martin Prado capable of playing second base, there’s a good chance Johnson will be traded at some point this offseason. He’s drawing interest from a number of clubs. Dave O’Brien of The Atlanta-Journal Constitution wrote that he heard whispers about a Johnson-for-Ryan Ludwick deal. If there is some validity to this, it seems like the Cardinals would ask the Braves to include at least one more player.
Braves GM Frank Wren is reluctant to trade Francoeur, whose trade value dipped significantly this past season. Because of Royals GM Dayton Moore’s ties to the Braves, Kansas City has been linked as a possible destination for Francoeur. But right now, the Royals aren’t offering enough to persuade Wren to pull the trigger and risk the possibility that a hometown star could go elsewhere and prove this past season was just a fluke.

Great news…. I was reminded that the Urbana Oyster Festival is this friday and saturday… It’s a great way for me to drown my sorrows… 🙂 Oysters just about any way you can think of and great music and well, jJust a good time to be had by all. I’m sure you all have some sort of festival or fair in you locality but this on has been going strong for 56 years…. Started as a way for the local fire department to raise money. Since they didn’t have ponies like Chincoteague, they do oysters fresh from the Rappahanock.

Anyway, Looks like Richmond will be without baseball for a while. Seems the Braves took everything including the kitchen sink when they vacated the Diamond. I am surprised they did not take the sod… They removed nearly everything else. Estimated it will cost 2 million just to get it into serviceable condition.

Matt Holliday Rumors: Thursday

5:10pm: Joe Strauss says the Cards are in on Holliday; Ryan Ludwick could be part of the package. Strauss says the Cardinals would have interest in signing Holliday to an extension. Tracy Ringolsby says the Cardinals have taken an aggressive approach, and also mentions Ludwick. He adds that GM John Mozeliak would need ownership approval to acquire Holliday.
4:53pm: The latest on Matt Holliday: SI.com’s Jon Heyman says the Phillies are the most aggressive suitor. The Phils do have the goods to get it done, especially with the suggestion this morning that the Rockies might be willing to take a bit less.
Meanwhile, Troy E. Renck continues to suggest the Phillies and A’s are the most likely suitors for Holliday. He reiterates that the Rockies are open-minded on the return.
